Spain maintains level 4 alert and says Nice attack was “jihadist” While no group has claimed the act, ministry sees signs of Islamist terrorism and points to a “lone wolf” The Spanish Interior Ministry has decided to keep the national threat level for terrorist attacks at 4 – the highest possible level is 5— following the attack in the French city of Nice. The decision was unanimously made by security experts at an emergency meeting of a committee formed to oversee Spain’s AntiTerrorism Pact. Acting interior minister Jorge Fernández Díaz, senior party officials and representatives of the National Police, the Civil Guard, the National Intelligence Center (CNI) and the Intelligence Center Against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO) all sit on the committee. Just like we defeated ETA’s terrorism with our unity, let nobody doubt that we are also going to defeat jihadist terrorism Acting interior minister Jorge Fernández Díaz The group of experts agreed to implement a set of “reinforcement measures” such as police checkpoints along Spain’s land border with France (which were already in place due to the recent European soccer championship). Other measures include beefing up security at critical transportation hubs such as airports, in touristheavy areas, and in places were crowds are likely to converge. This is the third time in under a year that acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy calls a meeting of the committee. A jihadist attack At a press conference following the gathering, Minister Fernández Díaz provided an update on the Nice attack. “Among the 84 fatalities there are people of various nationalities, although for the moment there are no Spaniards,” he said. “We are in constant touch with French authorities and have conveyed
our condolences, and offered our collaboration.” Fernández Díaz added that even though nobody has claimed the attack for now, “everything seems to indicate that it is a jihadist attack.” “The circumstances of the attack suggest that it was inspired by jihadism; but it is another thing to make a specific attribution,” he said. “The usual thing is for planned or coordinated attacks to be quickly claimed by the perpetrators. When this process is slow, it is a sign that [the attack] was carried out by what is known as a lone wolf.” As for international measures, the minister said that the EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) is about to become operative, just like weapons and explosives controls and a global definition of terrorism. In all of these aspects, said Fernández Díaz, “Spain is at the forefront.” “Just like we defeated ETA’s terrorism with our unity, let nobody doubt that we are also going to defeat jihadist terrorism,” he added. The Socialist spokesman at the committee, Rafael Simancas, noted that the fact that Spain is currently under a caretaker government does not take away from the effectiveness of the country’s security. Meanwhile, Ciudadanos representative José Manuel Villegas urged for greater cooperation among European countries and for “a search for common policies on defense and terrorism, which would be more efficient.” Spain has been on a level 4 alert since June 26, 2015. In November, following the Paris attacks, security was reinforced at specific points but the level itself remained the same. The top level, 5, is reserved for scenarios of imminent attacks on national territory, and involves an army presence at critical infrastructure and crowded places. elpias

Greater security in airports and tourist belts in Spain following attack in Nice
SPAIN’S interior ministry has announced plans to tighten security in areas frequented by tourists, including the coasts and major monuments, and to reinforce border controls following the Nice attack which has killed over 80 people. As yet, the country has no plans to increase its terrorism risk level from 4, the highest being 5 which would imply the Armed Forces patrolling the streets. The so-called Islamic State, or DAESH, has owned up to the attack in which a 31-year-old Tunisian with French nationality ploughed through spectators at the ‘Bastille Day’ fireworks on July 14. Armed police will be on patrol in airports across the country, and the extra controls planned at the French border which were due to cease on July 26 - will continue until further notice. A crisis meeting with the government’s anti-terrorism squad, including members of the CNI, or national Intelligence service, was held the morning after the massacre in Nice, and acting president Mariano Rajoy says the country will

Pilots at Spanish airline Air Europa have called four days of strike between July 30th to August 2nd promising to bring delays and cancellations at one of the busiest times for holidaymakers. He pointed out that the close unity and emphasis on peace and freedom were the strategies that eventually brought an end to the 40-year reign of terror by the Basque separatist cell ETA. The government has called for close cooperation from the general public, urging them to report any signs of possible radicalisation anonymously via the freephone number 900 822 066 or the email stop-racismos@interior.es, or using the mobile phone App AlertCops. Rajoy stresses that Spain’s record to date in thwarting attacks and nipping DAESH networks on home territory in the bud has been crucial so far to Spain’s safety. Air Europa pilots are protesting the creation of the new low-cost Air Europa Express service. Eleven Air Europa planes will become part of the new fleet, while the budget carrier will also take on some of the established firm’s passengercarrying work. But Air Europa pilots complain that the pilots for the new service will be brought in from outside at lower costs and won’t be covered by industry agreements. thelocal

'I've had best time ever' insists American gored in bull run
Matthew Lavin was gored through his left thigh on Wednesday morning as he ran with the bulls in Pamplona. The 39-year-old painter from New Jersey spoke to The Local from his hospital bed in Pamplona just hours after receiving the injury during the penultimate run of the annual San Fermin festival. “I’ve feeling alright,” he said. “All in all it’s been one of the experiences of my life.” He described the moment that the half-tonne animal, a fighting bull named ‘Ilustrado’, charged into him on the approach to the Town Hall Square. “I was running and I got caught up in some human traffic, I turned and saw the bull heading towards me and I just thought ‘run faster, get out of the way’, I had about three four strides to get away but I guess I didn’t get out of the way quickly enough.” As he tried to reach the safety of the barrier the bull caught him and pierced his left thigh. “I knew I had been punctured but at that moment the adrenalin was so great that it didn’t really hurt as much as it should have done. I didn’t realize it was so bad,” he said. He was pulled under the barrier to safety and treated by Red Cross medics at the scene before being transferred by ambulance to hospital. “I’ve got around 20 stitches in me. It’s going to leave quite a scar,” he said

proudly. Doctors have told him that he could be discharged within 24 hours. “I really hope so, because there is still a day left of the fiesta and with an injury like this comes a bit of fame. I’d like to be able to recount my experience.” Enjoying the fiesta in Pamplona before taking part in the running of the bulls. Photo: Matthew Lavine “I’m not going to let this put me off. I’ve had an amazing time at San Fermin and running with the bulls was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in my life. I’d love to come back and run again,” he said. “I came knowing that if you run with the bulls you can get gored and I thought about it a thousand times before deciding to do it. I knew it could happen and it did happen. And I’m lucky that I can walk away from it.” thelocal

Will English be the EU’s official language post-Brexit?
German and French are already gaining currency, despite English’s traditional role as the language of business While Europe and the global financial markets were chewing over the UK’s decision to abandon the European Union on Friday, June 24, some French members seized the opportunity to take up arms against the widespread use of English as the bloc’s lingua franca. If the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the club, they reasoned, why should its language predominate in Brussels? Politicians from across the political divide such as Robert Ménard, mayor of the French Mediterranean town of Béziers, who has links to the far right National Front, or Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a European Parliamentarian and left-wing candidate for France’s Presidency, who is advocating Frexit, expressed the same opinion that fateful Friday: “English no longer has legitimacy in Brussels,” said the former; “English cannot be the third language that the European Parliament works in,” said the latter. Former EU president Jacques Chirac once walked out of a meeting in Brussels when fellow Frenchman Ernest-Antoine Sallière – the then-leader of the European Employer’s Association (UNICE) – said, “I’m going to talk in English because it is the language of business.” Other English-speaking countries, such as Ireland and Malta, chose to be represented by Gaelic and Maltese respectively within the EU In 2013, the European news site Euroactiv reported that the EU’s French elite was finally resigned to the fact that their language no longer enjoyed the influence it had until the 1990s, when it was used as the EU’s main working language. Meanwhile, the French newspaper Libération’s correspondent in Brussels commented after the referendum: “The tendency to use English is powerful and it will probably be difficult to change.” The EU has 24 official languages, four less than
ort
the number of members (until the UK left), as some members states share a language. There are 1,750 linguists, 600 assistants, 600 translators and 3,000 freelance interpreters working in the European Commission (the executive body of the EU) alone, and whose job is to make sure all official documents are available in every language. But in meetings and seminars, as well as for urgent reports and press releases, English has long prevailed, followed by German and French. Euro-English As leading French daily Le Monde explained to its readers in an article on the consequences of Brexit, 38% of Europeans already speak English as a second language and it is unlikely it will stop being used in EU institutions. After all, as a report by the European Commission notes, it is the most spoken language in the European Union. However, the English spoken in Brussels is not British English. It is a type of Euro-English influenced by the language spoken by Eurocrats who have introduced words from other languages. For example, ‘control’ is used instead of ‘monitor’ and ‘delay’ instead of ‘deadline’. The paradox is that although English is predominantly used in EU institutions, without the United Kingdom as a member it will cease to be the official language because the UK was the only country putting it forward as its language. Other English-speaking countries, such as Ireland and Malta, chose to be represented by Gaelic and Maltese respectively within the EU. Former European Commissioner and current European Parliamentarian Danuta Hubner, who presides over the European Parliament’s Constitutional Committee, said on Monday, “English is the official language because the UK wanted it that way. If we don’t have the UK, we don’t have English.” According to Reuters, if other member states want
10.30 - 14.30
July 2016
to maintain English as the official language, they will have to come to an agreement or change the rules so that countries like Ireland can have two official languages. But the Irish representative in the European Commission says English shouldn’t disappear automatically as the official language, as Hubner points out: “The Council of Ministers unanimously decides the rules that regulate the use of languages in European institutions. In other words, any change needs a unanimous vote from the Council, including Ireland.” Nothing is automatic in Brussels, but since Friday things have been moving at a clip. Along with the message telling David Cameron to activate Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and start the two-year process of pulling the United Kingdom from the EU as soon as possible, according to the Wall Street Journal, the European Commission has already begun using more German and French. elpais

McDonald’s in Spain to use 100% Spanish beef from now on Coinciding with the 35th anniversary At present, McDonald’s purchases
of McDonald’s in Spain, the company has announced that it is now selfsufficient enough in this country to use 100% Spanish beef in all of the hamburgers that it produces here. According to president of the Spanish branch of the global fast-food giant, Mario Barbosa, McDonald’s will only use meat from cows that have been reared at one of the 30,000 farms distributed across the country that it relies on. Approximately 10,000 tonnes of Spanish beef will be purchased every year and served as McDonald’s hamburgers in restaurants all over Spain. Barbosa has explained that the meat served in restaurants in this country does not contain any preservatives nor additives, and comes from whole pieces of meat obtained from the shin (forequarter) and skirt. This is then shaped into a hamburger and immediately deep-frozen so that they can then be cooked on a grill at a later stage. McDonald’s receives beef from around 30,000 different cattle farms, which is around 20% of the total in Spain. The farms can be found largely in Extremadura (50.4%) and Galicia (34.5%), although some are also in Cantabria (3.6%), Castilla-La Mancha (2.9%), Cataluña (2.5%), Andalucía (2.4%), Castilla y León (1.9%) and Aragón (1.8%).
75% of its meat in this country (181 million euro) and the remaining 25% from other EU counties, but this will now change. As well as beef, the fast-food chain also orders 6,500 tonnes of fresh vegetables, 282 tonnes of fruit and almost 6,500 tonnes of chicken, collaborating with 60 Spanish companies and supporting 60,000 employees within the primary sector. In addition to ensuring that 100% of the meat used will now come from national farms, Barbosa has also promised to carry out sustainable, environmental and animal friendly practices. All of the factories in Spain are open to the public at any time, so that the consumer can see what he is putting into his body. Barbosa has placed particular importance in transparency, which has been one of the main priorities of the company over the last few years. Amongst its plans for the next few years, between 2015 and 2018, McDonald’s hopes to open 100 new restaurants and employ an extra 3,000 staff. This will be in addition to the 500 restaurants that have already been established in this country and the 24,000 people that work in them. expatica.com

Spain named the best holiday destination in the world in new survey
It came first in every category bar one. SPAIN has been named the best holiday destination in the world among sun-seeking Brits. An On the Beach survey of 1,000 Brits put Spain in pole position in the ‘best overall’ category, garnering 19% of the vote. Italy was a close second with 15% and France, while the most visited, was third with 9%. Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach said: “Spain really is the big winner in the survey, hitting the top spot in all but one category. “Spain is set to welcome more holidaymakers than ever before this year.” The Iberian favourite also clinched the ‘best night out’ category, with one in four holidaymakers choosing it as their number one place to party. And just to drive the point home, Spain also won the ‘friendliest locals’ and ‘best beaches’ categories. The only category it did not win was best food, where it came second place to Italy, who garnered 25% of the vote. expatica.com

Rescue centre granted legal ownership of 14 horses after major animal abuse case concludes
A Spanish man who kept 14 horses and nine donkeys in squalid conditions has received a nine-month suspended prison sentence and been banned from owning equines in a landmark animal abuse ruling. The plea bargain came after the man relinquished ownership of the animals just hours before he would have fronted court. But the move has angered Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre cofounders Sue and Rod Weeding, who said the deal allowed the man to avoid a public trial and fine for one of Spain’s largest ever animal abuse cases. The Weedings have cared for the 14 horses since they were seized by police in March 2014 from a property at Callosa de Segura, half an hour northeast of Murcia. All were extremely malnourished and some near death when rescued. The case was to go to Orihuela court on June 2. But just one day beforehand, lawyers called a meeting in which the former owner agreed to legally grant Mrs Weeding ownership of the horses. As part of the agreement, formally signed off by the courts on July 8, the man received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was also banned from owning equines or trading animals for three years. “We had hoped this man would receive some sort of fine. He’s cost so many people so much time and money, not to mention the suffering he inflicted upon these animals, and now he gets off almost scot-free,” Mrs Weeding said. “We feel like the lawyer we were working with has done a complete u-turn. As a result, a huge opportunity has been missed, because this court case would have set precedence across Spain. What kind of message does this send to animal abusers?” The March 2014 rescue involved a court seizure order for the horses and donkeys, which were found chained to a wall in a falling down building and were filthy, terrified and literally starving. Their owner, an equine dealer, allegedly went bankrupt and failed to provide his animals with adequate food, water and care. UK-funded, Malaga-based donkey refuge El Refugio del Burrito agreed to take the nine donkeys, but it does not have facilities for horses. Without the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre agreeing to take the remaining 14 horses, none of the animals could have been saved, as they were all named under the same seizure order and therefore must legally be removed simultaneously. “These are horses that are seized by the police and legally put into our care, but we do not receive any money from the government or police to look after them,” Mrs Weeding said.
“Of course we will care for them for the rest of their lives. But to do that we must find ways to fund them. It seems ridiculous that the owner does not have to pay a single cent.”
The case was originally closed without prosecution, but El Refugio del Burrito funded a specialist animal lawyer who worked to have it reopened. This lawyer then made the deal with the equines’ former owner last month. It is believed the man is ageing and unwell, and the plea bargain was made in an attempt to reduce stress on him. Mrs Weeding said she was pleased to see the man had been criminally convicted of animal abuse, but believed he should have been fined and made to front court. She had totalled the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s costs to care for the 14 horses, to present as evidence to the court. The bill has almost topped €66,000, including feed, veterinary care, horse hospital bills and the farrier – costs covered by donations, charity shop fundraising, and Mrs Weeding herself. “These aren’t riding horses. These are animals that have been mistreated and are unsound. It isn’t like we’ve taken away all these valuable horses, because they aren’t. They were just a bunch of broken down old horses that no one wanted,” Mrs Weeding said.
July was a very busy month for FAST2016 responders, some covering more than 8 shifts of 12 hours. Training in CPR was also carried out this month provided by a training company authorised by the Murcian Heath Authority, so we will have a few more authorised responders. There were a few days and nights that we were still unable to cover. We still need more responders and supporters. It is a very rewarding thing to be involved in, and a great bunch of people. If you call the FAST2016 number and there is no responder on duty there is a helpful recorded message. Remember to call 112 in an emergency. There are a lot of people to thank this month for their continuing hard work and support for this valuable service on this great urbanisation Camposol. Our in house training team, John Scott, Debbie and Mike Bell. And Val Caffin who held the fort for the group while we reformed. Our new trainer who will be authorised by the Murcian Health Authority, Baz Hamilton is busy getting ready to join the training team. Thanks to Paula Klages for decorating the tile that will be placed outside the Club Social. The FAST2016 team received the plaque from Antonio Hernandez Benitez. We are very grateful and our thanks go to the following groups and businesses. On Tuesday 12th July we were presented with a cheque for €650 by the Camposol Golf Association. On Saturday 16th we were presented
with a donation of €200 from Vinny at Another World Properties while we were at the Los Palacios Garden Fete. While there Debbie carried out blood pressure checks for passersby. We also had a recruitment stand where we explained what we did on Camposol and of course tried to encourage more volunteers to join us. Look out for the FAST2016 Health awareness day in September, lots of information on how to stay young and beautiful. This will be held at the Cultural Centre. The FAST nurses cannot help with this information but the FAST nurses will be out on Mondays collecting for this great cause. They unfortunately are not available for marriage, although they have been propositioned. There is a trip organised to Alicante castle and Spanish Galleon on the 23 September. Tickets are available from the bookstall on the second and last Friday each month outside T.J. Electrical (Euronics). Contact us on 968 970 626 for emergencies. Our Admin number is 634 309 899. Or you can contact by e mail at recruitment@ fast2016.org Our web address is www.fast2016. org it is worth a visit as there is a wealth of information including more health tips. What have you done today to make you feel proud?
“Obviously we love the horses and we want to take care of them. But we hope seeing the costs will make people actually understand the enormity of what we undertake here in Spain, where a proper animal welfare system doesn’t really exist yet.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre continues to care for 12 of the Callosa de Segura horses. Sadly, one skeletal mare died of intestinal complications shortly after her rescue – but not before miraculously giving birth to a foal, Lily, who continues to live happily with her adopted mother at the rescue centre. A second horse died of old age in December last year. “We are so pleased to see these horses now enjoying life at our rescue centre. They spend their days in the fresh air and sunshine, and will never again be chained to walls,” Sue said. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. How much exercise do you REALLY need to do to lose weight?

(The good news is it's less than you think)
Just 5 minutes of vigorous exercise a day is needed to reap health benefits Or 15 minutes of brisk walking or riding a bike gives the same results. This is far less than the Government-recommended 30 mins a day Over 35 minutes a day had no additional health advantages, study said We all know exercise is good for us but exactly how much should and what types should we do? While some experts suggest short and strenuous bursts, others would argue more moderate forms for longer
periods give the most health benefits. The good news is, the most significant health benefits come from minimal exercise, a new study claims. Just five minutes a day of vigorous exercise like running or 15-minutes of brisk walking or riding a bike - is all you need for your body to reap the benefits. In the latest study, Dr Thijs Eijsvogels and Dr Paul Thompson compared the effects of varying amounts of moderate and vigorous exercise on cardiovascular disease and mortality rates. The smallest amount of exercise to make a difference
to health is 105 minutes a week, the study said The smallest amount of exercise to make a difference to health is 105 minutes a week, the study said they found the ‘lowest effective dose' - that is the smallest amount of exercise to make a difference to health was the equivalent of 105 minutes a week. This falls well below the NHS guidelines for adults, which recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Moderate activity will raise your heart rate and make you breathe faster and feel warmer. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate level is if you can still talk, but you can't sing the words to a song. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Spanish-Style Decorating Ideas The cultural aspects of a Spanish-inspired home interior make it a popular choice among Americans. Whether you love a Southwestern or Old World Spanish look, these design ideas will help you incorporate Spanish-style flair into your home.
Mexican Textiles and Pottery
This Spanish-country style dining room (comedor) is adorned with Spanishinspired elements, from the antique Mexican pottery to the colourful paintings. "The paintings above the shelf depict a Spanish matador whose heart has been broken by a senorita," says artist Carole Meyer. Carole draped ethnic fabrics on the dining chairs and also hung them on a traditional Mexican shelf, which adds texture and colour to the informal space. The high ceilings, arches and thick walls are typical characteristics of Spanish-style architecture. The hand-painted pottery across the table and shelf adds extra Mexican flair. Traditional Mexican Accessories
"Inspired by a Spanish matador's Suit of Lights, the vibrant colours of this master bedroom are a joy to wake up to," says Carole Meyer. Details like the custom-made mirror cloth pillows and star-shaped recessed lighting give the room a magical touch. The weathered chair in the corner is draped with a huipil, a traditional Mexican garment. The embroideries on the huipil have specific meanings and reflect one's cultural identity. The round bedside table is covered with an African kente cloth and topped with an antique Mexican saint and silver objects from India. Carole placed weathered chests next to and at the foot of the bed for a rustic look. The dark iron candlestick lamps with red silk shades bring an elegant touch, and the custom-made arched headboard resembles doorway arches popular in Spanish architecture. Photography by Carole Meyer

Wrought-Iron Details
This Spanish-inspired great room is centered on a hand-carved cantera stone fireplace, which adds elegance to the room. Architectural designer Matt Dougan incorporated wrought-iron detailing into the room through an oversized chandelier and balcony loft railing. Wrought iron was primarily used for weapons and used to protect doors and windows from invaders, but it became popular as a decorative material, such as in elaborate screens in Spanish cathedrals, beginning in the 16th century. Arches, ceiling beams, corbels and stone elements bring Spanish architecture into the space, while gold furnishings bring luxurious elegance
Adobe Shower Designer Steve Appolloni didn't take the normal approach when he designed this bathroom made from adobe, a natural material made from sand, clay, water and other natural elements. Adobe originated from the Pueblo Indians, and the Spanish were the first to make adobe into bricks dating back to the 8th century B.C. The material is now popular in New Mexico and other Southwestern homes. The round shape of the shower walls allows for a larger space and the glass-block wall emits natural light while giving privacy. http://www.hgtv. com

The Cork Oak
The closest most people ever get to a Cork Oak tree is by holding the cork from a newly opened bottle of wine. It’s amazing to think that the 5cm long wine plug spent a decade or more growing as tree bark around a Cork Oak somewhere here in the Mediterranean. Eastwards from Portugal through Spain, the south of France, Italy and also Morocco stretch 2.5 million hectares of Cork Oak forests. These forests provide some of the most ecologically diverse habitats in the world. Up to 135 different plant species have been found in just one square metre of forest including 30 different types of bracken. In Spain/ Portugal the rarest cat species in the world the Iberian Lynx lives in these forests and Barbary Apes live in the oak forests of North Africa. Almost all of Europe’s Crane population use the forests for shelter and breeding. Many Cranes nest just inland from Gibraltar; they can be seen atop chimney pots and telegraph poles. The biology of the Cork Oak
It’s quite funny how often people get all defensive when talking to me, and hurriedly explain that they’re not religious, but do still believe in God. And then they tend to suffer a level of confusion when I reply saying ‘me too’; for most people seem to presume that because I’m involved with the Church, write these articles and even take funerals, then I MUST be ‘religious’, with all that the expression seems to imply. But I’m not; in the sense that I don’t hold to loads of rules and regulations or follow all manner of religious traditions or formulae. True, I do believe in God, and I admit I actually enjoy going to Church. I personally believe that Jesus, the Son of God, lived a perfect life on Earth; died on the cross so that all who put their faith in him may be forgiven the wrong they have done, and that he rose from the grave and is now in heaven, from where he will in due course return. And I also believe, along with many of those who are so at pains to explain that they’re not religious, that life does not end with the grave, but that there is a great hope of eternity in the presence of the God in whom I believe. But does that make me religious? I would argue strongly that it doesn’t. Indeed had Jesus been
religious he’d never have been crucified, but instead he took considerable issue with the religious leaders of his time, arguing passionately that personal faith was of far more value than religious zeal. And in his very famous chapter about love, when writing to the Church in Corinth, St Paul spends considerable time pointing out that any amount of religious fervour or spiritual gifts, without love, are absolutely worthless. So if you have an aversion to religion, but do inwardly have a personal, inner belief in a God you acknowledge you don’t understand, then ‘join the club’ – you’re in very good company. means that it’s more fire resistant than other tree species, the cork protects the trunk and main branches of the tree from any forest fire. Afterwards new shoots and leaves sprout quickly again from the tree and the canopy is restored. Other tree species sprout again from their bases or from seed so the oak has a clear evolutionary and height advantage. As well as providing a haven for wildlife the oak forests create quality soil and also reduce soil erosion from the wind and rain. The tree roots lock the soil in place and provide drainage channels for rainwater to absorb into the rich soil easily. This also reduces erosion downstream from the forests as storm water runoff is greatly reduced. Hydroelectric schemes and reservoirs benefit from cleaner water so increasing safety and efficiency. In Andalucía alone; about 150 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are stored in all its forests. Every year about10 million tonnes of CO2 are absorbed by the oak forests alone
– they really are the green lungs of the Mediterranean and vital to all our wellbeing. Because it’s renewing its bark, during its lifetime a harvested Cork Oak will store five times more carbon than a non-harvested tree. The cork is hand harvested by up to 5 people per tree using small axes; a tree will be about 25 years old when it’s first cropped. The trees live for over 200 years and can be harvested every 10 years or so. 300,000 tonnes of cork is produced each year in Europe with half of that coming from Portugal. All those wine corks add up to about 50,000 tonnes with the rest used mainly for flooring, olive oil stoppers and footwear. This equates to a billion Euros in business turnover a year and 30,000 jobs. The Romans used cork as floats for fishing nets; it’s been used in wine bottles for the last 400 years. Having worked in the wine trade and being keen on preserving our environment, I only buy wine that
has a natural cork. There is a romance about opening a bottle of wine and some things should be left as they are. Plastic stoppers and metal screw tops as alternatives use up the earths finite resources and create landfill. Plus without the cork being harvested these beautiful and vital habitats suffer. I will soon be holidaying amongst these splendid trees again in Grazalema, near Ronda. Though I doubt I will find anything like the ‘Whistler Tree’ located in Portugal. This great Oak has been harvested since 1820 and holds the record for the largest ever single tree harvest. A tonne and a quarter of cork was taken in 1990; enough for a veritable wine lake of over100,000 bottle corks!

LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM LOCATION INSIDE! Spaniards’ Holiday Home Rentals Rise
Up to eight million holidaymakers resident in Spain stayed in holiday rental homes in the last two years (April 2014 to April 2016), according to the third Barometer of Holiday Rentals in Spain, prepared by HomeAway, leader in this sector, together with the University of Salamanca. Moreover, the study concludes that holiday home rentals have increased in popularity among the other traditional types of tourist accommodation (hotels, casa rurals, etc.), rising from 34% of the total number of bookings made in 2014 to 36% in 2016. The study highlighted a reduction in the average length of stay compared to 2014 (down from 8.22 nights to 5.7 nights), although this was offset by the increase in the number of bookings made during the period analysed.
The majority of holiday home bookings were made by families (45%), and couples (32%), followed by groups of friends (20%), with the average length of stay being 5.7 nights and the average group size being four people. According to the study, the reasons Spanish travellers choose holiday homes is for their convenience, for longer stays in national destinations and for travelling with the family. El Mundo reported that the principal destinations of choice for Spanish residents when booking a holiday home are AndalucĂa (26%), Valencia (15%), Catalonia (13%), and the Canary Islands (11%), while Madrid is one of the main regions for enquiries on this type of accommodation (22.1%). kyero.com

Resale Housing Prices Fell by 1.4% in Q2
Second hand house prices in Spain registered a reduction of 1.4% in the second quarter of the year, compared to the previous quarter, to stand at an average of 1,531 euros per square metre. Year-on-year this equates to a decline of 3.1%, according to the latest real estate price index from property portal, idealista.com. Only four of Spain’s regions reported increases in second hand house prices in the second quarter of the year – the Canary and Balearic Islands, Andalucía and Madrid – plus six provinces and 16 capitals registered positive quarter-on-quarter figures. The region to register the greatest increase was the Balearic Islands (+0.7%), followed by Andalucía (+0.2%), Madrid (+0.1%) and the Canary Islands (+0.1%). In all the other regions prices declined, with the largest being that registered for Castilla-La Mancha (-4.8%), followed by Aragón (-2.5%), Murcia (-1.8%) and Extremadura (-1.7%). The Basque Country remains the most expensive region, with the average price per square metre of second hand housing standing at 2,526 euros, followed by Madrid (2,349 euros). In contrast, the three most affordable regions for second hand housing are Castilla-La Mancha (900 euros), Extremadura (931 euros) and Murcia (1,016 euros).
El Economista reported that, of the six provinces to register price increases, Málaga recorded the greatest rise, of +1.5%, followed by Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Alicante, each with an increase of +0.8%. In contrast, the greatest declines among the provinces were recorded in Toledo (-6%), Ciudad Real (-5.5%) and Lleida (-4.7%). The Basque provinces of Guipuzcoa and Vizcaya still lead the ranking of the most expensive provinces with average second hand housing prices standing at 2,844 euros and 2,591 euros per square metre, respectively, followed by Madrid (2,349 euros) and Barcelona (2,131 euros). Toledo is the cheapest province (809 euros), followed by Ciudad Real (855 euros) and Cuenca (859 euros). kyero.com

24 Home Sales Climbed by 23.6% in May
July 2016
The latest data published last week by the National Statistics Institute shows that sales of homes in Spain rose by 23.6% in May, compared to the same month of 2015, reaching a total of 36,425 transactions, and represents the highest figure registered since January 2013, when 39,920 transactions were carried out. With this increase, home sales have accumulated four consecutive months of year-onyear increases. However, even though the increase registered in May was quite significant, it was less than the growth recorded in April, when home sales climbed by 29% year-on-year. The second hand market and, to a lesser extent, sales of new homes, were responsible for the May increase. Specifically, second hand home sales increased by 26.7% year-on-year, to a total of 29,422 transactions, while sales of new homes increased by 12% year-on-year, to reach a total of 7,003 transactions. ABC news reported that some 89.3% of the homes sold in May were free housing and 10.7% were subsidised housing. Sales of free housing rose by 22.7% in May year-on-year, reaching 32,512 transactions, while sales of subsidised housing rose by 31.7%, to a total of 3,913 transactions. In the first five months of the year, home sales accumulated an increase of 15.8% over the same period of 2015, as a result of the 21.9% increase registered in transactions on second hand homes, as transactions on new housing fell by 3.4%. Monthon-month (May over April), home sales increased by
3.5%, representing the lowest increase registered in this month in the past five years. In May, the highest numbers of home sales per 100,000 inhabitants were registered in the Balearic Islands (159) and La Rioja (155). Andalucía was the region to register most home sales in the fifth month of the year, with 7,013 transactions, followed by Catalonia (5,591), Valencia (5,082) and Madrid (4,952). In contrast, the regions which registered the least home sales transactions
48% of Spanish Mortgage Holders Believe Their Homes Have Dropped in Value
in May were La Rioja (380), Navarre (390) and Cantabria (416). In relative terms, home sales rose in all of Spain’s regions except for Navarre, which registered a decline of 20.2% compared with May 2015. The most significant increases were recorded for the Balearic Islands (+70%), La Rioja (+68.9%) and Murcia (+61.8%), while the most minor increases were recorded for Cantabria (+1.7%) and Galicia (+7.8%). kyero
According to a recent study entitled “Spaniards and their relationship with housing in 2015”, carried out by property portal fotocasa, 48% of those currently paying for a mortgage on their home believe that the price of their home has declined since they acquired the property. In contrast, some 60% of homeowners whose homes are already paid off believe that the current value of their home is higher than when they bought it. Head of Research for the portal, Beatriz Toribio, explained: “Despite the crisis the housing market has suffered and the collapse of prices, more than half of the home owners feel that they could sell their home for a higher value than the price they paid for it. The Spanish are still not conscious of the decline in housing values, even though they have dropped by an average of 45% since the pre-crisis highs”. In fact, the study shows that 52% of Spanish home owners have already paid off their mortgage, while 45% are still paying it, and the Baby boomer generation have the highest percentage of home owners with a mortgage already paid (69%), compared to 39% in the case of both the Millennials and Generation X. Fotocasa’s report was compiled from data collected from an online survey of the portal’s users carried out by Netquest, from some 5,528 questionnaires completed by individuals between the ages of 18 and 65 years. kyero

Waiting for Paco (With apologies to Samuel Beckett)
Antonio Poyato, sitting on a low mound is trying to take off his boot. He pulls at it with both hands, panting. He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again. Loco Paco arrives, dust covered and footsore. Paco: Still a long way to go. Shall we travel together? Poyato: Yes, as soon as I take this ruddy boot off and put it on again. Paco surveys the countryside, the Castle of Alqueria is in the far distance. Paco: It’s a vast wilderness out there, completely devoid of humanity. Poyato: Reminds me of my first wife, although she was a very attractive lady but unfortunately not from the front. Loco Paco stares blankly at Poyato, as if someone has forgotten to plug him in. Poyato: Can you smell burning? Paco: Sorry, indigestion. Poyato: Well? Shall we go? Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move. Poyato pulls a hip-flask from his pocket, he offers it to Paco. Poyato: Remitroot Whisky Paco? It keeps the demons at bay. Paco looks around for demons with a worried frown. Paco: I don’t like demons. They are always where you don’t expect them. Poyato: How do those people who don’t drink keep their demons at bay Paco? There are people who don’t drink you know! Paco: I know, I remember reading about them somewhere. Poyato: I don’t like sitting on this mound, nature has a habit of making a mad
dash up your trouser leg.
Paco: That’s why I wear gaiters and drink Remitroot whisky. Poyato: Well? Shall we go? Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move. Poyato: Do you understand life Paco? Paco: Enough to get by, enough to appear sane if I need anymore I ad-lib. Poyato: That doesn’t make sense Paco. Paco: No nothing does. Paco sighs, a long long sigh. Poyato: You can make a sigh last longer than a Mother-in-Law’s visit. Paco sighs Paco: Antonio?
How long were you married
Poyato:Four hundred and nine years. Can you remember your first love Paco. Paco:
Yes, I still have the receipt.
Poyato shielded his eyes and scanned the blueness of the morning sky. Poyato: There is intelligent life out there in space Paco. What do you think? Paco: Well they haven’t bothered to visit us, that must demonstrate a reasonable level of intelligence. Poyato: We aren’t alone you know! Paco: I know, I have my Saharan Dung Beetle, Benjy. Poyato stares blankly at Loco Paco, as if someone has forgotten to plug him in. Poyato: Back to Alqueria then? Well? Shall we go? Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move.
LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE QUESTION: My brother and I recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keeps the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor and with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that, in respect of my half, two taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on the half to me and 2. a taxable donation to my brother. Is this correct?
ANSWER: I am afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation).
The best solution, depending on the way the will was worded, would have been:
Option 1. If the will states that everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional). In this case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which makes it a donation) who would inherit the complete property directly from your father. Option 2 . If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership, which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary, claiming that you made a mistake.

The Struggle for Supremacy
Her Royal Highness Sayyida al Hurra, Somebody Else’s Cat, resides with us because she wishes it. She regards all other forms of life, including humans, to be inferior, and as such we should know our places. She is the most regal cat I have ever met, and also one of the most intelligent. She is capable of joinedup thinking and forward planning. She knows that ultimately a human is a lot bigger than a cat, even if the cat has superior armaments, so she organises her life to her own convenience without provoking confrontation. Between us there are unwritten but clearly understood rules of behaviour; She doesn’t back down, she simply circumnavigates any situations where a cat/human conflict could occur. However, the other day it all unravelled. It was hot and I needed a sit-down. Specifically in the breeze and the shade, on the recliner chair on the porch. ‘You can’t sit there,’ Pete said. ‘Si is on it.’ ‘I’ll ask her to move.’ ‘You can’t do that!’ ‘Watch me!’ I approached the chair with its incumbent cat with deference. ‘Si’ I said, ‘I want to sit there.’ The chair continued to be full of apparently sleeping cat. ‘I said, I want to sit there. Please get up.’ She raised her head. ‘You may stroke the top of my head.’ I stroked the top of her head. ‘Now please get up.’ She opened her citrus green eyes and stared at me. ‘There are other chairs.’ ‘I want to sit in this one. Get up.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk Please.’ I moved my hand towards her rear end in an encouraging gesture. With the speed of light a paw flashed towards my arm, just stopping short of contact. She narrowed her eyes and fixed me with a death glare of such ferocity that I am surprised that I did not spontaneously combust. ‘How dare you even dream it. Go away.’ ‘I said please.’ We locked eyes. It was clear to me that she had no intention of relinquishing ‘her’ chair, and that in a fist fight she would win, so I employed the advantage of greater body mass. I picked up a cushion and dropped it gently on top of her. ‘Move, or I’ll sit on you.’ I said, thinking that a hornet’s nest would be quite comfortable in comparison. She emerged from underneath the cushion and stalked off, waving her tail. Later I apologised to her and she came and sat on my lap. I was forgiven!
**Strictly Newsflash**Strictly Newsflash**Strictly Newsflash** Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine as the weather starts to warm up. F O K TAL N W O T E H T Kroger recalls ice cream because of peanut reside in flour The Kroger Co. is recalling another product because it contains flour possibly contaminated with peanut residue, a known allergen. Kroger’s Deluxe S’mores Ice Cream in 48-ounce tubs is the latest product to be recalled by the nation’s second-largest grocery retailer. Kroger initiated the recall because Grain Craft recalled flour used in the ice cream after tests showed it had low levels of peanut residue. The recalled ice cream can be identified by the UPC number 0001111001399 and “Sell By May 20, 2017,” or “Sell
By May 23, 2017,” date codes. “People who are allergic to peanuts could have a severe reaction if they consume this product. For consumers who are not allergic to peanuts, there is no safety issue with the product,” according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration’s website. Kroger stores and other grocery store banners owned by Kroger have pulled the product. The Kroger Co. initiated its customer recall notification system to alert consumers who may have purchased the ice cream with messages on register receipts and with phone calls.
Other grocery stores that received the recalled Kroger branded ice cream are: Dillons, Baker’s, Gerbes, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, JayC, King Soopers, City Market, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s. The ice cream was distributed to stores in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

White bread is toast, offal's off the menu and Supermarket giant says it aims to eradicate all food waste at its stores curry's in favour... how and distribution centres by 2017 our eating habits have changed since the 1970s
Sales of basic white bread of have slumped by 75 per cent as shoppers spend £40million less on it every year Spam, tea, full-fat milk, cabbage, faggots and cheap cuts of meat like liver and kidneys are off the menu Now we eat pizza, pasta, frozen chips, curry, ready meals and takeaways, according to an official survey Britons are now drinking on average just eight cups a week today, down from 23 in 1974 Once a staple part of Britain’s diet, it seems that white bread just doesn’t cut it any more thanks to the nation’s changing tastes. In fact, sales have plummeted, with M&S scrapping basic white bread for fibre-filled alternatives in its stores and shoppers spending £40million less on it last year. Former favourites such as Spam, tea, full-fat milk, cabbage, faggots and cheap cuts of meat including liver and kidneys are also increasingly off the menu in many homes. Instead, we’ve gained an appetite for pizza, pasta, frozen chips, curry, ready meals and takeaways. The remarkable shift in the country’s eating habits comes from an official survey dating back to 1940, parts of which have been published online for the first time. Sign of the times: White bread, offal and full-fat milk are out and take-aways, pizzas and frozen vegetables are in. Sales of white bread slumped by 75 per cent, while offal, which includes meat such as tripe, liver and kidneys, has effectively disappeared from many dinner tables, with consumption down by 90 per cent. White bread appears to be the victim of a health backlash, with people switching to brown bread and foreign alternatives such as naan and ciabatta. The fall in consumption equates to eating 25 slices a week in 1974 to just over six now. Similarly, the amount of butter used is down by 71 per cent. It suffered after it was demonised by the Government, scientists and doctors for its saturated fat content and a link to heart disease. However, the sales slide has begun to reverse as new science suggests some of the fats could actually protect the heart. Full-fat milk has gone the same way as butter, with average consumption down by 90 per cent. By contrast, sales of semi-skimmed milk, which has less fat – as well as fewer nutrients – have soared. Even the great British cuppa is in decline, with tea consumption falling from 68g per person each week to
just 25g. With a teabag or portion of loose tea weighing around 3g, that means Britons are drinking on average just eight cups a week today, down from 23 in 1974. White bread sales slumped by 75 per cent, while consumption of offal, which includes tripe, liver and kidneys, has dropped 90 per cent Consumption of offal, which includes tripe, liver and kidneys, has dropped 90 per cent White bread sales slumped by 75 per cent, while consumption of offal, which includes tripe, liver and kidneys, has dropped 90 per cent The changes are revealed today in the Government’s National Food Survey. The food and farming department, Defra, has published the findings of the study from 1974 to 2000 online for the first time. Many of the trends have continued beyond 2000, according to other official data. The figures come from thousands of ordinary families, who were asked to keep a food diary of what they put on the table. Food became cheaper – a trend that continues today. Shopping for food took up just 11 per cent of household income in 2000, compared to 24 per cent in 1974. In 1974 only 15 per cent of households owned a freezer and shopping lists included tinned milk pudding and canned peas and potatoes. By 2000, families were buying frozen chips, peas and even cakes. Home cooks moved away from buying raw ingredients
to make a meal from scratch towards processed food and takeaways. Out goes lard, lamb chops, corned beef, cucumbers, fresh tomatoes and packs of sugar, while in come skimmed milk, reduced-fat spreads, mineral water and chicken, curries, pies, pasties and puddings. Fewer eggs are eaten in 2000, but sales of crisps and snacks are much higher. Pasta, frozen chips, honey, frozen breaded fish and yoghurt also make more of an appearance. In 1989 households were asked for the first time whether they owned a microwave, and since then the number of ready meals we buy has more than doubled. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: ‘Food is the heart and soul of our society and this data not only shows what we were eating 40 years ago, but how a change in culture has led to a food revolution. ‘The internet has brought quality produce to our doorsteps, pop-up restaurants are showcasing the latest trends and global cuisines are as common as fish and chips. ‘We can look beyond what, where or how previous generations were eating and pinpoint the moments that changed our habits for good.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk
Food waste: harvesting Spain's unwanted crops to feed the hungry Spain’s gleaning movement has grown rapidly in response to austerity, harvesting imperfect fruit and veg - that would otherwise be wasted - for food banks. Now its own line of jams, soups and sauces is taking off too Under a blazing Catalan sun, Abdelouahid wipes the sweat from his brow in a cabbage patch full with clouds of white butterflies. “It’s really not warm today,” he says. “It’s only hot if you stop working.” Around him, unemployed workers and environmentalists squat in green bibs, black gloves and hats, plucking cabbages that would otherwise be threshed, to distribute at food banks around Barcelona. A 39-year-old Moroccan emigré with two small children, Abdelouahid began “gleaning” – harvesting farmers’ unwanted crops – with the Espigoladors (gleaners) after losing
his job in the construction industry four years ago. It is Ramadan and he is fasting but still smiling as he cuts at the green jewels. “I don’t like to spend my days at home, sending CVs to employers, waiting for their rejection letters, or going around the restaurants trying to find food,” he says. “I prefer to do something positive. A lot of people need this food. It is better to collect it than to leave it.” Europe wastes some 88m tonnes of food each year - around 173 kg per person - with costs estimated at €143bn (£113bn). Advocates of the new gleaning movements say that its collection could reduce pressure on land use, improve diets, feed the hungry and provide work for the socially excluded. For now, most of its recovered foods go to food banks, but the Espigoladors social enterprise has
launched an “Es Imperfect” (is imperfect) brand of jams, soups and sauces made from recovered produce. The line is growing so fast that the day after the cabbage picking, the project’s founder, Mireia Barba, was called to a meeting of Cotec, King Felip VI’s national development foundation. Another fruit of the gleaning project has been an “I’m imperfect too” advertising campaign which challenges conventional ideas of food and beauty, by using photos of ordinary people holding painted fruit. The idea was to change misconceptions about browned, soft or unusually shaped fruit and veg being any less tasty. Gleaning has a long tradition in rural Spain associated with dignity of the poor and communal food preparation, but the onset of austerity sparked a revival born of
necessity. Abdelouahid says that in the weeks ahead he will lose his sole income – a monthly €426 social security cheque – after passing a four-year threshold. He is not alone. The El Punti Solidari food bank in the nearby town of El Prat is preparing to open its doors to 500 local users as we arrive, with a van buckling under the weight of cabbage from the fields of Viladecans. The centre is co-run by the Red Cross, Caritas – a church agency – and the local council. Its staple is processed foods provided by the supermarket chain Carrefour, but the gleaners’ fresh produce is treated like gold dust. Arnau Garcia, a council coordinator for the food bank said: “Espigoladors is so important to us because they take their vegetables directly from the field. The people who come here often don’t have very structured lives and do not put a value on vegetables. But we think that it is very important and put a high priority on it.” Food bank users who glean are allowed to take home a crate of whatever they have picked. The green bib uniforms were introduced after stealing by some food bank users caused problems with the local farmers. In Terrassa, Albert Falguera the owner of the 4Unces shop said that he bought Es Imperfect jams after customer recommendations. “They sold out in a few hours so I had to make a second order,” he said. “I have several customers who have already tried one of each flavour.” The artisanal jams are processed by a sympathetic local family business run by Manel Dominguez. Last year, he produced 20,000 organic jam jars, some made with plums or peaches, others with eggplants or carrots. “It’s a really interesting project and we agreed a special price, because the work is so necessary,” he said. “The main problem on my side is the improvisation, because I don’t know when they will bring the fruits and veg.” Local farmers often invite the espigoladors with a day or two’s notice before fields are replanted, meaning improvisation is often needed on the part of the gleaners too. With demand for Es Imperfect products rising fast, the espigoladors will soon be moving to pastures new. theguardian

The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on
the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time. Playa Paraiso beach on a summer weekend. The beach at Playa Paraiso is very popular, partly because it has road access right onto the beach. On summer weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet.

The importance of pets Most people do not doubt that pets are great companions and that they are good for everybody (young and old people). To many adults, especially those who live alone, animals are like family members. They fulfil your need for affection and attention like only animals can do. To children, in addition to being their companions all day, animals also serve to help them learn day-to-day things. Animals show the circle of life in an accelerated way compared to human beings (birth, youth, adulthood, old age and dying). They also show children other things related to life such as having an accident, getting ill and knowing how to take care of themselves. As these phases are more accelerated in animals than in human beings the children learn about them through the animals. Moreover, animals help the children to develop their sense of responsibility, since they need to be taken care of constantly. In a study performed by Robert Bierer it was concluded that children, aged ten to twelve who had animals had more empathy towards others and higher selfesteem. Pets also help children to reduce their anxiety, tediousness and fear and to develop a better capacity to integrate and to be more focused in school. There are many important factors in the
choice of a pet. The fact that the person who acquires it can have allergies (like asthma, bronchitis, etc.) is one. If that is the case, the person should opt for an animal that does not provoke allergies, for example, an aquarium with fish or a turtle. Another important factor is the age of the children that will socialize with the animal. Despite each child having its proper rhythm of maturity, the appropriate age to have a first pet is from six years onward. At this age the child is already familiar with school, is already more sociable and will possibly already understand its responsibilities towards its’ animal. In other words, it will understand that it cannot mistreat the animal and it must care for its’ hygiene and feeding. It can be concluded that, despite the work and the constant attention animals need, we are always rewarded. They give us joy, company and loyalty like nobody else. Whatever animal you choose, it will always be a great friend. In past years and mainly in rural society, animals had a usefulness that was totally related to work. Currently, in an urban world that becomes “less natural” each day, animals are not used for this purpose anymore. Due

to social demands and the fact that we all lead an extremely stressful life, man is emotionally isolated and has a profound necessity of interpersonal communication. These circumstances cause a desire to search for relief of this loneliness. Man needs something to keep his dreams and memories of a more distant nature alive. Thus, the pet is transformed into a confidant and trusted friend whose understanding and patience enables man to relieve his anxiety and depressions. In this way we can say that: stroking an animal can help to relax and lower blood pressure; observing an aquarium makes you feel calmer (it is advised by many therapists in situations of work stress); pets, especially dogs, teach children to communicate and to establish social relationships more easily; pets stimulate good mood

New Renault Clio 2016 review The Renault Clio supermini undergoes a very minor facelift, but are the changes more than skin deep? .Renault’s 2016 Clio only benefits from some minor changes, so it’s an update that’s largely inconsequential. The slightly sharper look and more upmarket bits inside are welcome, as is the added tech, but the Clio still remains stylish and reasonable fun to drive. The fact remains, however, that there are more practical, more upmarket and more comfortable superminis out there for the same money. Renault knows as much as any firm that you don’t need to fix something if it isn’t broken. Why mess with a formula if it’s delivering success? With more than 400,000 sold globally in 2015 alone, the fourth-generation Clio remains the French brand’s strongest seller. Even leaving that aside, it’s still one of the most attractive small cars around three years on from its launch. That’s why the supermini’s mid-life updates are subtle to say the least. At first glance, this ranks amongst the least noticeable facelifts of the year so far – perhaps because the Clio didn’t look anything but fresh already. But subtle tweaks here and there help to give it a small lift. The main differences are found at the front: whereas the old grillemounted LED running lights looked like an afterthought, the revised headlamp design (now with optional LED main beam lights for the first time too) incorporates them into the main units in a ‘C’ shape that mimics the new Megane. The lower air intake is broader, too, while the foglights are now neat LED items on top models. The rear light lenses are also darkened, there’s a new bumper, while there’s some extra alloy wheel designs and a refreshed colour palette. There’s even more scope for personalisation, inside and out, too, which is something that modern small car buyers crave. Anyone looking for drastic changes to the driving experience will be disappointed, however. The Clio’s powertrain range increases with a more powerful 1.5-litre, 110bhp diesel engine, while the previously auto-only 118bhp 1.2-litre turbo petrol also gains a six speed manual gearbox for the first time. It’s the latter we’ve tried here – and it confirms our suspicion that it’s a powertrain that would benefit from a manual ’box. Renault also claim to have improved the shift quality, but it’s still not the slickest gearchange
around – at least it unlocks an extra degree of engagement that the EDC transmission took away. Performance and fuel economy is only improved fractionally, with 0.2 seconds lopped off the 0-62mph time (down to nine seconds dead) and one extra MPG (up to 53.3). The engine itself is strong and flexible enough that it doesn’t need to be thrashed to make progress, although it’s not particularly smooth or refined given it’s a four pot – it actually sounds a bit like a diesel when revved. Efficiency figures aren’t much to shout about either: its CO2 output of 118g/km is behind a number of key rivals. Still, its power band is less narrow than the rather sluggish 0.9-litre unit, and the Clio’s lightness means it’s perky. Renault hasn’t taken the opportunity to tweak the Clio’s suspension in any way, instead settling on fettling the steering for a more direct feel. For the most part, however, it’s the same accurate and agile steer as before, but lacks the sophistication in its damping that marks out the best of the small car breed. Big bumps are taken care of well, but small, sudden ripples in the road cause the Clio to fidget and jolt. Don’t think the tradeoff is a dead-level body in the corners, either, as body roll is noticeable. It’s still fun on the right road, though, and it suppresses wind and road noise as well as the best in the class. While the exterior didn’t need much doing to it, the current Clio’s cabin found itself a bit behind rivals in terms of trim quality. As a result, Renault claims to have worked LOS DOLSES S.L on improving how things feel as well as how they look. There’s surfaces that are more pleasing to the touch, with greater use of BEST soft-touch plastics on the doors PRICES and satin-effect metal trim, plus PAID CARS FOR CASH matt black details on the air Call Spencer on 637 090 665 vents to give it a classier look. the finish is lacking: namely the scratchy plastics in the centre console and lower dash, and cost-cutting items like the nondamped glovebox. As for space, it’s fine up front, but adults in the back will find it claustrophobic thanks to the small side windows and tight headroom. Still, infotainment has taken a step forward. Even base models now receive a smartphone cradle, dubbed R&Go, that allows sat-nav and DAB radio to be run through a special app on your phone,
Mid-spec cars receive the 7-inch central touchscreen with sat-nav, while the feature-packed R-Link system, with various connected services, is reserved for top-spec cars. The touchscreen still isn’t particularly easy to use, however. An excellent Bose sound system is also on the options list, as is a hands-free parking system. “Losing someone to cancer really resets your perspective. It makes me value life, cherish my loved ones and be grateful for every day I have with them.”(Sheridan Smith) 4.2 million people recently tuned in to watch an outstanding and powerful performance by Sheridan Smith (recently seen in Cilla) and whose credits include the sitcom Gavin & Stacey, Two Pints of Lager & A Packet of Crisps, Quartet with Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon to more highbrow Ibsen. A versatile actress and an accomplished singer. Staring cancer in the face may be construed as a bravado act but it takes a lot of courage. Smith, affectionately known as the queen of the biopic agreed to play Lisa Lynch, a journalist, or more specifically a magazine editor. Lynch was adamant that her alter ego should be played by Smith and only Smith. For the latter it became a “personal labour of love” in spite of being a “uniquely testing” role. Once being diagnosed with breast cancer at 28, Lisa decided to write a humorous and personal blog entitled Alright tit. Once it went viral she soon discovered that she had a massive following including Stephen Fry who described it as “funny and brilliant.” The blog gave her a purpose especially during some dark moments of despair. The blog inspired her and her family to deal with the disease: “You’ve made one underemployed woman with swollen joints and one missing joint very happy.” With the success of the blog came the book and The Bullshit was the adopted name for her cancer. Nicole Taylor wrote the tv script and Simon Lewis produced the drama. Tim Kirkby directed it. It’s 2008 and Lisa and Pete (played by Paul Nicholls, ex-Eastender) have been happily married for 18 months. Lisa’s discovery of a lump is taken in her stride and she gloats to her friends who want a feel! The atmosphere is excitable as the couple share their exciting and forthcoming plans to tour the States taking in New York, Washington, Carolina, Georgia and Miami. These are exciting times surely? Dreams of a lifetime. Once Pete accompanies his wife to the hospital to investigate the lump, the atmosphere changes and the acting takes on a new dimension-frighteningly real. It’s every women’s nightmare. The mammogram shows that it’s not a cyst and the prognosis isn’t good-the signs are consistent with breast cancer. The consultant informs a shocked Lisa that a biopsy will determine whether the lump is invasive or non-invasive. The breast can’t be saved because of the size and it becomes necessary to have an immediate operation. The couple find it difficult to respond; they are dumb-struck as one would expect. It’s certainly not what they expected to hear. Lisa’s parents and brother, Jamie are also shocked but prove a well-needed

tower of strength. More bad news- the cancer is invasive, a tumour of 5 cm and the sad news that she is hovering between stages 2/3 out of a possible 4. The next stage is a skin-sparing mastectomy where muscle and skin is taken from her back.”I want this thing out of me, cut me open, take my nipple, take the lot, scar me up, just get it out.” The operation is successful and the cancer is removed. At this point, Lisa felt like a “museum exhibit, a creature to be viewed” and she blogs: “ding dong, the lump is dead.” Unfortunately, that is not the end-radiotherapy, (26 sessions), chemo (6 rounds) and reconstruction. An emotional breaking point devastates Lisa when she has to come to terms with the fact that she will never be able to have any children. Her cancer is hormonal receptive and any IVF treatment would accelerate her cancer. The treatment inevitably causes side effects as most of us know-the hair falls out, the eyelashes fall out and there are frequent bouts of sickness. Smith agreed to have her head shaved and as Lisa, she calls herself a “smackhead” resorting to hoodies to attempt to hide her baldness and not resemble Uncle Fester. One particular poignant moment that shows how traumatic it all was for Lisa was when she was in the advanced stages of the disease. We see Smith soaking in the bath, unable to get out, trying to call Pete for assistance and struggling to make any recognisable sounds. He carries her as if she is a fragile invalid, wraps a couple of towels around her and gently places her on the bed. The scene proved to be a particularly painful one for Smith whose brother Julian died from cancer when he was 18. The drama shows inevitable moments of despair but there are light-hearted moments and displays of happiness. Lisa concludes with “There is as much to mourn as there is to celebrate.” Jamie’s wedding was one of those moments, a “spectacular” day for Lisa who danced the night away feeling almost cancerfree. The Bullshit had taken away her independence, her optimism, her hopes and tentative plans. The book was written when Lisa was hopeful that she would survive-we know that many people do survive. Lisa’s therapist highly recommended the book telling sufferers it was “brilliant, funny and honest” one that would help people come to terms with cancer. “Cancer forces you to act and soon the acting becomes the reality because you’re so bloody determined to put out the signals.” The book has raised awareness of cancer, the tv drama has cemented that awareness in order to save more precious lives. A winning formula.

San Miguel Golf Society at Alenda Golf. July 13th, 2016. Breezy but bright weather greeted the 34 members making the trip north to Alenda golf, our thanks go to Alenda for arranging a game for us at such short notice after the days before cancellation of Alicante Golf because of water problemas. Fairways were in good condition and many tees brought forward, but greens unusually woolly and therefore slow, causing some players major problems, as did the swirling nature of the wind, often the case at this course. Only Chris Hamblett (38) and Ken Flaherty (37) managed to break par. The final of the SMGS 2016 Roger Pearson doubles matchplay competition was played between The Wizard & Oz ( John Osborne & Darren Hancock) and The Dumpers (Steve Davis & Ivan Hanak) after a hard fought match Wizard & Oz won on the first extra hole which was exactly the same outcome as last year’s final between the two teams. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th, Mary Cleary (34), 4th, Gratten Forber (35), 3rd, Brian Mulligan (35), 2nd, Ray Ewins (36) & 1st with the best score of the day Chris Hamblett (38). Silver Category: 5th, Ron Stenhouse (32), 4th Steve Davis (32), 3rd Charles Jones (33), 2nd Richard Cleary (35) and 1st, Ken Flaherty with 37 points.
T.M.G.S. @ La Finca 13/7/16 Gold Category: 5th, Darren Hancock (30), 4th John Osborne (30 on CB), 3rd Steve Higgins (31), 2nd Andy Imrie (32) and 1st, Robin Eastman with 35 points. The Abacus highlighted how fortunes can change in golf in such a short time, with last week’s third top scorer in his category Norman Cahill taking home the bottle of wine. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Richard Cleary (3), Norman Mcbride (5), Gratten Forber (13) and Chris Hamblett (16). Our thanks go to the staff at Alenda golf course for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next Wednesday, July 20th, we will be at Las Colinas.
A welcome overcast and breezy day greeted us for our monthly visit here. Could it have been the reason for the low scoring or could it have been the amount of maintenance in progress notably on the tees and the greens? The greens were unusually slow and bumpy and many members were complaining of taking “3 putts”. Let’s hope that on our visit next month that all is well and then the only place to lay the blame for a low score will be the player! There was no roll over in the “2’s” pot so the only player to “luckily” make a 2 was Joe Dean on hole 16 and collected the €21 therein. Results for the N.T.P. Competition; hole 3 Joe Dean, hole 6 Carstan Landaas, hole 13 Sandra Twentyman and hole 16 Fred Kras, our best guest this week was Dave Richards with 35 pts. Quesada Golf Society
Last Wednesday the society travelled south along the AP7 to Roda golf course which is visible from the motorway. It was a bit overcast to begin with and a slight breeze blew which was welcome with the sun coming out part way through the day. The course as always was in very good condition. The competition was an individual stableford with a Gold & Silver division. 28 players took part. Another course with an island green on the par 3 7th hole with the lake around the green just waiting for balls to make a splash. Janet Candelin´s did but it bounced out onto the green stuff. The winner of the Gold division was for the second time in a row was big Brent Hollins with a score of 37 points. He is certainly in a rich vein of form. Big Bad John will look forward again with glee to cutting your handicap. In second place with 33 points was west countryman Ron Perkins. No need this time Ron to go scrounging a bottle of wine off the other winners. In third place was Darryll Wright known in walking football circles as “Sick-note” with a score of 29 points. The winner of the Silver division with a creditable 31 points was Chris Nields. In second place with 26 points was sailor-boy David Johnson. Welcome back David after a long lay-off after falling from the mast of your boat in dry dock. In 3rd place on C/B with 25 points was the man from Sherwood forest, Paul Flanaghan. The best guest was southern Irishman Joe McCadden with the best score on the day with 40 points and it wasn´t the luck of the Irish. Joe played magnificently. The “nearest the pin” winners were Brent Hollins, wee Gordon McGregor, Joe McCadden, big bad John Featherstone, the bonnie
Scotsman Sergio Spiers and the man who looks after the societies money, Brian Airey. There were two games in the annual knockout competition with Paul Feathertstone beating smokin Tony Patterson and Darryll Wright beating John Dunnion. Commiserations to John who parred the first then got disturbed by the marshall about buggies which put him off his game and from which he didn´t recover. There were no 2´s on the day with the pot being carried forward to the next game. The scratchcard was won by Mark Good with Falkirk. After the game the players returned to the society base at the bright and airy bar area at the Quesada Country Club for the presentations, a drink or two and a tasty hot and cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts. The next society game is on Wednesday 27 July at Campoamor, a course the Society has not played for a good few years with members looking forward to it. It will be an individual stableford competition. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at a very reasonable cost, should contact the Chairman & Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966 716 723. It was back to our “Home” on an extremely hot Summer’s day, temperatures hit a high of 36 degrees and plenty of water was the order of the day, a little tip drink at least a half litre of water before you go and play as it is difficult the rehydrate quickly when playing. What was interesting though was the methods used to keep cool; the best I have seen is to soak the Bucket Style hat in water the night before and freeze it ready to wear for the next day. (Really cool!) The next is to do the same with a towel. These methods worked as some of the scores were quite good, for those who did not know about them were not so cool and the score likewise. Well done to Vistabella green staff as the course and in particular the greens is in really good condition and helped who could cope with the heat. Claudio Ranieri has poured praise on Chelsea’s new manager Antonio Conte, and claimed that Jose Mourinho will return United to greatness. Conte’s Chelsea got off to a poor start at the weekend, losing 2-0 against Rapid Vienna in Austria. That led to a chorus of criticism from fans on social media, with Conte dubbed a “fraud” and “Van Gaal 2.0”. But Leicester’s Premier League-winning manager Ranieri backed his compatriot to shine in English football. “Antonio and Chelsea are made for each other.”

Ranieri: Conte ‘made for Chelsea’, & Mourinho can be the new Alex Ferguson
Ranieri told Gazzetta dello Sport. “They must know each other well and not let themselves be sidelined by the inevitable cultural differences, but we shall see an Italian model at Chelsea.” Ranieri also praised Jose Mourinho, saying that, “he may become the new Sir Alex Ferguson. He will not stay in Manchester for 26 years, but he will leave his mark.” Ranieri also spoke about his other potential rivals for the upcoming season, picking out Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp as men to watch. “Pochettino was been an exemplary rival in the final sprint to the title last season. He’s working very well,” Ranieri said. “Klopp will have the advantage of having broken the ice with the environment and learned more about the Premier League.”He also seems to me perfect for a particular environment such as that of Liverpool.” Eurosport.com

Tyre gamble pays off for rampant Marquez in Germany
Spain’s Marc Marquez doubled his lead at the top of the MotoGP championship after the Honda rider roared back from a slow start off pole position to win the German Grand Prix on Sunday. Second in testing conditions at the sodden Sachsenring circuit, which was pounded with rain for much of the day, was Britain’s Cal Crutchlow and third Andrea Dovizioso of Italy after they enjoyed a tussle. Lorenzo and Rossi lose ground on Marquez It was a miserable day though for Marquez’s championship rivals with Jorge Lorenzo, the reigning champ, finishing down in a lowly 15th for just a single point and Valentino Rossi eighth. Marquez, who celebrated wildly after the race, almost doubled his lead on Lorenzo as he closes in on a third title. He jumped up to 170 points overall, with his fellow Spaniard now lagging in second on 122 points. Rossi, the Italian legend, is third on 111 points, with half the races in the season now gone and the riders heading off on a summer break for a month before the Austrian Grand Prix. The brilliant 23-year-old Marquez, beaming
broadly, said: “I could not imagine (that I would be this far ahead), it is great. “I opened the gap in the last two races (he was second last time out in Assen) and I am in good confidence after a good first half of the season.” Marquez added: “Now I will have some quiet and go to the swimming pool.” Seventh German GP win Marquez, for whom this was a stunning seventh victory at Sachsenring, gambled with his tyres and it paid off handsomely in the end. He was unable to match the pace of the leading riders as the race began in the wet and fell down to fifth and was struggling. He came off the track at Turn 8 but was able just about to stay upright and on lap 17 he entered the pits for slicks it was a move that would take him to the race win. With the track drying up, his lap times immediately surged to four seconds faster than those on wet tyres and with just six laps to go Marquez grabbed the lead before pulling away. Zarco reigns in rain Earlier, Johann Zarco also surged clear at the top of the Moto2 championship when the Frenchman surged to victory in soaking conditions, as his nearest rivals crashed out. The reigning world champion pipped fellow Kalex rider and home hope
July 2016
Jonas Folger to the line, with the Spaniard Julian Simon third on the podium, in the ninth race of the season. Zarco’s thrilling victory, he was just 0.059 seconds ahead of the German, was his fourth win this season and propelled him to 151 championship points. Second in the standings is Spain’s Alex Rins, who suffered a heavy crash that ended his race with only three laps to go when riding in third. He walked away from the smash. Binder leads Moto3 championship In Moto3, the 17-year-old Malaysian Khairul Idham Pawi took victory at the main expense of Italians Andrea Locatelli and Enea Bastianini. Pawi is 10th in the Moto3 standings, 105 points behind South African leader Brad Binder, only eighth in Germany. wheels24.co.za

Caparros ‘backed for Spain job’
Joaquin Caparros has reportedly received overwhelming backing from Spain’s regional federations to become the country’s new Coach. According to AS, Caparros has been endorsed by 14 of Spain’s 19 regional federations, with the remaining five divided in their support of Julen Lopetegui, Jose Antonio Camacho,
Michel, Pepe Mel, Juan Carlos Garrido and others. Article 35 of the Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) statutes state “it is the responsibility of its Board to appoint the proposal of the President, the national-team Coach and technical staff”, yet the last five Coaches were elected solely by chief Angel Maria Villar. Nonetheless, the former Sevilla, Deportivo La Coruna and Athletic Bilbao boss has the support of the majority in the RFEF, including Sevilla President Jose Castro, Atletico Madrid’s Enrique Cerezo and Eduardo Herrera, head of the Andalusian federation – the second largest. Villar is due to present his candidacy for the UEFA presidency on Tuesday, and he must make a decision on whether to appoint Caparros or a technical committee to oversee the new Coach’s arrival. Henrik Stenson says Phil Mickelson pushed him to victory Open champion
Henrik Stenson says it was the fighting quality of beaten opponent Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon that helped him win his first major. Stenson, 40, hit an eight-under-par 63 - the lowest final-day Open-winning round - to record a tournament record 20-under total and win by three shots. "It was a great match," said the Swede, runner-up to Mickelson in 2013. "I knew he wasn't going to back down at any point and that made it easier. I knew I had to keep on pushing." Stenson, who has had one runner-up finish and four third places in majors, added: "It makes it even more special to beat a competitor like Phil. "He has been one of the best to play the game in the last 20 years, so to come out on top after such a fight with him over these four days is amazing. "He told me earlier in the season I was deserving of a major championship and I said to him, 'You'll probably not like it if you are on the end of it' but I want to thank him for a great couple of days." Stenson, who will climb a place to fifth in the world rankings, had most recently challenged at a major when he finished third behind Rory McIlroy and Mickelson at the 2014 US PGA Championship. While success in majors may have previously eluded Stenson, in 2013 the year Mickelson beat him to The Open title at Muirfield - he became the first man to top the money list on both the American and European orders of merit. "My previous record in majors is not something you want to keep on hearing, but I just felt like this was going to be my turn," added the man from Gothenburg, who now lives in Florida. Magnanimous Mickelson The American was not surprised to see Stenson lift the Claret Jug. "I'm happy for Henrik," said the 46-year-old. "He's really a great champion. "We've been friends for some time. I've always thought that he is one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that major championships are perfectly suited for him. "I knew that he would ultimately come through and win and I'm happy that he did. "I'm just disappointed that it was at my expense. It's probably the best I've played and not won." The quality of the battle between Stenson and Mickelson, who dropped just four shots all week, was emphasised by the fact, as runner-up, he finished 11 shots better off than third-placed JB Holmes. That was a margin wider even than the 10 shots that separated secondplaced Jack Nicklaus, following his famous 'Duel in the Sun' defeat by Tom Watson, from third-placed Hubie Green just down the Ayrshire coast at Turnberry in 1977. "I don't remember being in a match like that, where we've separated ourselves from the field by so many strokes," said Mickelson. "That's probably why it's disappointing in that I don't have a point where I can look back and say, 'I should have done that or had I only done this.' "I played a bogey-free round of 65 on the final round of a major - usually that's good enough to do it, and I got beat." Bbc.com
