Spaniards in Munich describe terror of shopping centre shoot-out

A GROUP of Spaniards on holiday in Munich, Germany, have described how they hid in the cashpoint lobby of a bank when they heard the shots ring out, instantly fearing a terrorist attack on the scale of the Paris massacre in November. “At times like this, you only think about running for cover - fear stops anything else going through your head,” said one of the visitors from Loja (Granada province), local radio DJ Juan María Jiménez. The 10 Spaniards, all from the same town and aged between 23 and 65, were about five kilometres from the shopping centre where a young gunman ran amok. They were fairly near the central Karisplatz, which was evacuated after warnings of a second shoot-out that turned out to be unfounded. “We were in a shop when the till lady’s facial expression suddenly changed, and a voice in German ordered everyone to get out of the mall,” Jiménez explains. “Everyone started running at once and seeking cover.” His party ran into the street and took refuge in the lobby of a bank,

from which they had a clear view of how the streets suddenly emptied of pedestrians and filled up with patrol cars with sirens blaring, and armed police carrying machine guns. “We saw a police officer nearby and when we went to ask him what was happening, he ran with his machine gun pointed into a nearby side-street, so we just got back inside,” Jiménez explained. When they were able to do so, the ‘Granada 10’ hid inside a nearby luxury hotel, at the advice of the Spanish Consulate, whom they rang from their hiding place. They shared the tense few moments in the lobby with another five Spaniards who had travelled from the regions of Murcia and Valencia to the popular German city. The hotel shut its doors to the public, the city centre was closed off to outsiders, trams emptied of passengers lined the streets as public transport was grounded, and people all around were running in terror. “We even saw a baby’s pram, empty and abandoned,” Jiménez reveals. “Given the madness and panic, we thought it must be a terrorist attack - the streets were deserted and we were not allowed out

of the hotel. “In fact, we had to stay there until gone 02.00hres, when we managed to get three taxis to take us all to our accommodation. “None of us speaks German, which meant even greater fear and uncertainty - although we managed to keep abreast of developments through the Spanish media online.” They managed to let their friends and families know that they were safe inside their hotel when they finally made it back there, after which, they said, they slept off their ordeal in order to ‘recover a bit of normality’ and ‘enjoy the days they had left’. The group did not return straight home, but chose to carry on with their holiday and make the best of it. Reports some hours after the attack,

which killed three adults and six children and left 27 injured - some seriously - seem to show that the author was a very young man with psychiatric problems rather than being a member of, or acting in the name of, any type of terrorist organisation. Immediately after the shoot-out, the killer turned the gun on himself, becoming his own 10th victim. He is said to have been an 18-yearold German with Iranian parents, who had been born in the central European country, and had no known leanings towards any political or religious ideology. thinkspain

High winds smashed up one of the lights in the take-off zone, and planes heading for Manchester (UK), Milan (Italy) and Paris were grounded. Flights connecting Barcelona with St Petersburg (Russia) and Beirut (Lebanon) had to be rescheduled after one of the three runways, number 25R, was shut. Among the affected carriers was budget airline Vueling, which has recently caused some 50,000 passengers huge headaches after up to 40 flights a day were cancelled due to organisational mayhem. Vueling had pledged ‘business as usual’ for the rest of July and all of August, having taken on extra staff and thrown on an additional aircraft, but the unseasonal storm yesterday meant further cancellations and delays were out of their control. Forked lightning, gales and heavy rain late on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday mean extra time will be needed even today (Sunday) between aircraft landing and re-boarding, and delays may ensue due to the domino effect of yesterday’s cancellations and rescheduling. thinkspain

7,140.00â‚Ź BOOST for the MABS Respite room

On a hot a sultry day in June a team of intrepid MABS volunteers took their place on the Tee at the Exclusively Peraleja Charity Golf Competition. Hosted by the Exclusively Peraleja S.L Bespoke Properties and played at the Seveveriano Ballesteros designed course at the Peraleja Golf Resort, Avilles / Sucnia the boys made a valiant effort but sadly were no match for the regulars however, the substantial BBQ afterwards soon made up for their disappointment. This annual Charity event has raised thousands of Euros for many varied charities and this year MABS Cancer Support Group were invited to attend and receive the proceeds. MABS would like to thank Chris and Vee Hardwidge; Liz McReynolds; Nicola Murdoch and Brenda Jubber for their hard work in organising the event including the fantastic auction and raffle, the staff in the Restaurant, the golfers who played in the competition and everyone who came along to

support the event – MABS are truly grateful to you all. Exclusively Peraleja requested that the monies raised at the event should be put towards the running costs of the MABS Respite Room which provides Respite Care for patients who would benefit for a little rest and relaxation following cancer treatment or dignified end of life care when a cure cannot be found. MABS Cancer Support Group is a registered Charity providing help and practical support to people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Although legally registered MABS does not receive any local or Regional Government funding all the services we provide are paid for through donations and fundraising events. Volunteers are always needed in the Murcia area – Mazarron; San Javier; Calaspara and Fortuna if you would like to find our more email us on mabsvolunteers@gmail.com to find out more.

WRITERS, artists, intellectuals, historians and other household names in Spain have signed an open letter urging political parties to put their personal ambitions aside and work together to avoid a third general election. They all come from a wide range of political values, with supporters of all the main parties who stood for general elections in December and again in June. The letter says that the 'moment has come' for searching for consensus and solutions rather than playing the 'blame game', and calls for politicians in the limelight to 'prevent the absurd situation' of 'forcing the voting public' to putting its 'trust' in a third election

nearly nine months. This means crucial action to cull unemployment, return the country to prosperity, seek unity in light of the Brexit threat to EU economic and political stability, help the influx of refugees in Europe, or safeguard the nation against terrorism, has not and cannot be taken. Those who predicted a second election within hours of the inconclusive result of that of December warned Spain could be in for a 'lost year' in terms of socio-economic, legal and welfare matters which need urgent addressing.

glorious goodwood The home of champions - In 1802 the 3rd Duke of Richmond introduced horse racing to Goodwood for the amusement of local army officers. Race week was so popular it was soon dubbed Glorious Goodwood and today the racecourse is renowned for being one of the most exciting – and is considered by many as the most beautiful – in the world. With five days of thrilling action set against the magnificent backdrop of the rolling Sussex countryside, Qatar Goodwood Festival – popularly known as Glorious Goodwood – is the sporting and social highlight of the flat-racing season. thoroughbreds compete in some of the world’s most prestigious races. The Stewards’ Cup was first run in 1840, and it was here that Edward VII caused a sartorial stir by sporting a panama hat and lounge suit instead of traditional top hat and tails. 2015 saw a new association with Qatar, whose sponsorship will ensure that Goodwood continues to attract champion jockeys, trainers and the finest equine athletes. The undoubted sporting and social highlight of the season, the Qatar Goodwood Festival gets underway in 2016 with the Opening Ceremony on Tuesday 26 July – a celebration of past winners and the unveiling of specially commissioned cups for the week’s feature races.

welcome to my business yahoo sold!

US internet firm Yahoo is being acquired by American telecoms giant Verizon Communications for nearly $5bn (£3.8bn) in cash.

The price tag for the deal is well below the $44bn Microsoft offered for Yahoo in 2008 or the $125bn it was worth during the dot.com boom.

and will continue to do so through this combination with Verizon and AOL.”

Yahoo will be combined with AOL, another faded internet star, which Verizon bought last year.

Verizon said the deal for Yahoo’s core internet business, which has more than a billion active users a month, would make it a global mobile media company.

In an email to staff, Ms Mayer said she was “planning to stay”, adding: “I love Yahoo, and I believe in all of you. It’s important to me to see Yahoo into its next chapter.”

The deal does not include Yahoo’s valuable stake in Chinese firm Alibaba.

Marissa Mayer, chief executive of Yahoo, said: “Yahoo is a company that has changed the world,

welcome to my business While this is a sad day for Yahoo - as big as Facebook and Google in its prime - it raises interesting questions about its new owner. What are Verizon’s ambitions? Beyond the talk of becoming a global media company, Verizon chief executive Lowell McAdams wants a larger share of the booming digital advertising pie. And he thinks this deal will help him. As a leading US mobile phone network, Verizon Gigi’s Ladies Boutique is ladies fashion store which specializes in Adini, Marble and Capri daywear as well as Panache, Roza and Naturana lingerie. already had a wealth of data from smartphone users that it could mine. Its purchase of AOL a year ago for its programmatic advertising technology allowed it to leverage that more effectively. Yahoo, meanwhile, has struggled to build its mobile advertising business. Its appeal is that it has content. With Yahoo, Verizon gains the internet company’s 600 million monthly active mobile users, as well as LIVE IN SILENCE AND YOU LIVE ALONE....... hearing loss is a hidden disability, it often attracts little sympathy and understanding and the majority of sufferers spend years in denial before taking the plunge and trialling an aid. its email service, Yahoo Finance, and Tumblr, which is popular among millennials. So is Verizon ready to take on the likes of Google and Facebook? In 2015, these two tech behemoths claimed the largest share of the digital ad market. Whether or not Verizon can challenge that remains to be seen - but that’s certainly the idea. bbc.com Best Wishes, Camposol and Puerto de Mazarron, offer the best Exchange Service in the area. The hidden health clues in the SHAPE of your food, from walnuts boosting your brain to celery strengthening your bones...

Studies have shown many foods look like the body part they are good for Ancient philosophy says the shape of plants give clues as to their purpose Long stalks of celery look like bones and help to strengthen the skeleton Walnuts warn off dementia while their wrinkles resemble a brain Remember that old saying ‘you are what you eat’ or ‘if you don’t eat all your carrots you won’t be able to see in the dark’? Well, recent studies have shown many fruits and vegetables often look like the body part or organ that they are good for. That’s right – it’s not just a coincidence that kidney beans are actually called kidney beans, or why walnuts look like tiny little brains. An ancient European philosophy known as ‘The Doctrine of Signatures’ suggests that plants, animals and minerals often contain clues in their shape, form or actions, which secretly tells us their purpose. CARROTS: EYE Look at a carrot and you’ll see the pattern resembling the lines of the pupil and iris similar to that of an eye Carrots also have the ability to enhance blood flow, bettering the function of the eye. Look a bit closer and you’ll even start to see the pattern resembling the lines of the pupil and iris. As well as being packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants, carrots also contain a plant chemical called beta-carotene – which is where they get their orange colour from. Beta-carotene is great for reducing the risk of developing cataracts and protecting against macular degeneration – the leading cause of loss of vision in older people. Carrots also

Walnuts contain a high content of omega-3 fatty acids and develop over three dozen neuron- transmitters, which help support brain function. They also help to warn off dementia and a recent study found walnut extract broke down the protein-based plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Spanish Plants for the

Mediterranean Climate What’s different about Spanish Gardening to UK gardening?

The Mediterranean coastal plain where most expatriates buy properties in Spain is hot every summer and sunny most days of the year. Rains come mostly in the Autumn and Spring (sometimes). Most of the coastline is frost free except for some north facing mountainsides but frosts can be experienced in the coastal mountain valleys just fifteen minutes from the coastal plain and 300 metres up. The most colourful and exotic gardens in Spain are therefore found along the narrow coastal plain between the eastern coastal mountains and the warm Mediterranean sea. This benign climate makes it possible to grow a wide range of subtropical and even tropical plants in private and public gardens, within urbanisations and around golf courses.

What plants are available in Spain? Twenty years ago good garden centres were few and far between and often the available choice was limited, special plants being sold out fast. Today new garden centres have sprung up all along the coast to service the rapid growth in the ownership of coastline properties by both foreign and Spanish families. Spanish plant names Many newcomers to Spain struggle with plant names since English names will be rarely found in nurseries. The nurseries tend to use a mixture of local Spanish names and botanical names –sometimes foreshortened. We have therefore given all three names for each plant in the book to help readers in their selection and purchasing of `plants.

What are the most popular plants in Spain? Palms and cordylines

Tall palms and the shorter palm like cordylines are essential features of the garden landscapes inherited from the moors. However many palms are being attacked Repair & Install by palm weevils for Good, Fast, Low Cost which there is as yet no cure.

Our favourites fall into two categories. Those that flower for most months of the year and some outstanding seasonal plants. The long flowering bushy shrubs include hibiscus, lantanas, oleanders, ange’s trumpets. Each come in a range of hot colours – reds, oranges and yellows – and more subtle pinks, creams and whites. All can be planted as individual specimens or as colourful hedges. Lantanas are among the longest continuously flowering shrubs and in our view are preferable to short seasoned roses. Although very characteristic of Spain the latter are best assigned to a dedicated side garden. Spring flowering gems include the squat and spire like blue, white and if lucky red flowered varieties of the Pride of Madiera echiums and red flowered bottle brushes.

In each case spreading low growing plants such as purple and white flowered lantanas, messems and giant pig face help reduce the extent of capillary evaporation from the sun baked surface of otherwise exposed soils. Colourful often perfumed hedges Hedges are still important along the coast to give shelter from hot winds from North Africa, storm carried salt, security and privacy. Many property owners opt for something more exotic than the very serviceable cypress and good for nothing/gandula hedges by planting flowering hedges. Among the most popular are bougainvilleas, hibiscus, oleander, lantana, bitter orange and the Japanese mock orange, pittosporum – the latter three being pleasantly perfumed. Prickly pear cacti hedges will still be seen in undeveloped areas acting as a firebreak, intruder/animal deterrent and a source of fruit for jams and liquors.

Sun ripened fruits and nuts One of the main advantages and indeed thrills of the most sheltered gardens within the subtropical coastal strip is that exotic fruits can be grown. These include avocados, bananas, dates, guavas, lychees, mangoes, nisperos, papayas, macadamia and pistachio nuts and even pineapples can be successfully grown as well as delicious figs, sweet Moscatel grapes and the full range of citrus fruits – oranges, mandarins, grapefruits, kumquats, limes, lemons. http://gardenspain.com Summer special effects include the highly perfumed frangipanis and the lady of the night, continuously flowering plumbagoes and the marmalade bush streptosolens, while the yellow spires of cassias add distinction to summer and autumn flower beds and banks.

Perennials The most reliable and exotic include the long flowering lion’s ear/leonotis, African daisies, pineapple and candelabra sages, lavenders, cascading rosemary and of course geraniums/pelargoniums. Succulents and cacti Naturally many succulents, cacti and agaves thrive in the hot dry climate. Although the six metre high flowers of the agave century plant only appear after eight to ten years other varieties will flower annually. Our favourites include aeoniums whose yellow conical shaped rosettes of flowers are held high above the exotic leaves around Christmas time, the colourful flowered aloes including the medicinal aloe vera, the orange red flowered cotyledons, the red flowered cabbage like echeverias and the exotic flowered epicactus and orchid c ac tus/e piphyllum -even though the flowers of the last two wither in less than a day.

Builder makes a real life ‘Where’s Wally?’ game for sick kids to spot from their hospital window

When Jason Haney started work on a construction site beside a children’s hospital, he knew just how to brighten their days with everchanging game Jason Haney created an 8ft model of Wally so that he could entertain the kids in hospital Children’s hospitals are difficult places for little ones to spend time but one builder has done his bit to make their experience as fun as it can be. Jason Haney is working on a construction site beside a facility where sick kids are getting treatment. But when he realised they can look out of their ward windows and see his building work, he decided to build them a real life ‘Where’s Wally?’ game. The worker who lives in South Bend, Indiana made an 8ft cut-out of the stripey-jumpered kids’ favourite and started hiding it around his site for patients at the city’s Memorial Children’s Hospital to spot. Parent’s desperate appeal to save severely burnt 11-month-old boy The kids - who in the US call the character Waldo - are tasked with finding the character, at which point Mr Haney moves it and the game

RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE QUESTION: My brother and I recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keeps the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor and with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that, in respect of my half, two taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on the half to me and 2. a taxable donation to my brother. Is this correct? ANSWER: I am afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office

taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation). The best solution, depending on the way the will was worded, would have been: Option 1. If the will states that everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional). In this case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which makes it a donation) who would inherit the complete property directly from your father. Option 2. If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership, which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary, claiming that you made a mistake.

Movie News and Reviews

SNOWDEN

For two-plus hours, audiences will be mesmerized by Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s transformation into Edward Snowden, government agent turned whistleblower who now lives in exile after exposing programs used by our own government to spy on the world’s citizens. You will become so engrossed in Gordon-Levitt’s portrayal that it’ll be stunning when, in a bit of camera trickery, the REAL Edward Snowden shows up in a scene that begins with Gordon-Levitt in the role, and gracefully transitions into the actual Snowden. The mind reels with questions. Why did Oliver Stone do this? Did he actually go to Moscow, where Snowden resides, to shoot this scene? Thankfully, as part of a special Snowden screening in San Diego, Edward Snowden participated in a live Q-and-A via satellite from Moscow and answered questions alongside Stone, Gordon-Levitt and costar Shailene Woodley. And he opened up about the creation of this eye-catching scene, explaining: Oliver [Stone] came out to interview me, talking about maybe [filming me] to contextualize it, maybe for DVD extras. But we had this feeling, as we talked about things. I spoke at length about my personal values, and just how I felt about things that had been happening to me since 2013. And I guess he liked it. People do see, to respond to it. And I think there’s kind of a magic in seeing Joe, has been going through the movie, putting this really amazing performance, and then it wipes across the back of the screen. ... It was something that made me really nervous, but I think he made it work. Does Oliver Stone agree? He took the baton from Snowden and elaborated: The whole thing is set up by Joe. He’s obviously exhausted himself at this point. And I think we just wanted something completely out of the left field. It was a gamble. I think poor Ed [Snowden], he suffered greatly that day. He’s minimizing the damage to his psyche. It was very hard for him. We did nine takes, I believe, at least, on several angles. He talks so well in interviews, but it’s so hard for him to become a third person. He has that difficulty making that leap. Any actor knows what I’m talking about. ... We got there eventually, but it was a painful day.

Star Trek Beyond This weekend, audiences are preparing to

re-board the Enterprise and explore the deepest reaches of outer space when Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond opens in theatres. The interesting thing about Beyond is that it’s the continuation of the series, J.J. Abrams launched back in 2009, but we already know that a Star Trek 4 is in the early planning stages. So, will we get a tease for that recently announced sequel via the always popular end-credits sequence? No, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay for the end credits sequence of Star Trek Beyond, because two special things to happen early on in the process. It’s not breaking news that the Star Trek family lost two very important members recently. Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, died of complications to his chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2015, while Beyond was still in production. And then, tragically, current Chekov Anton Yelchin was killed in an automotive accident in June, leaving his Star Trek colleagues reeling. While there is no footage in a post-credits scene, both Nimoy and Yelchin receive memorial cards in the credits of Star Trek Beyond. The movie’s actually dedicated to Yelchin with the touching “For Anton” added at the last minute. In many ways, Star Trek Beyond feels like an episode of the original series, and furthers it’s connection to classic Star Trek with everything from bottles of Saurian brandy to Shakespeare quotes, but the movie’s greatest charm is just how fresh it is and feels. The script takes pieces of franchise history and lore and moulds them to create something original - not only providing the opportunity to view classic elements in different lights, but also opening the doors to the creation of two tremendous supporting characters in Sofia Boutella’s Jaylah and Idris Elba’s Krall. The former is destined to become a fan favourite (being a firecracker badass who shares a fantastic backand-forth with Scotty); and while the latter requires some time to evolve on screen and become interesting, by the end he makes for a terrific foil to the ennui-addled Kirk. Taking the reins from J.J. Abrams behind the lens, Justin Lin succeeds in crafting a Star Trek movie in his own personal style -- constructing not only mind-blowing action sequences, but even giving audiences a new way to look at the Enterprise. With its camera work and visual effects, the movie creates a great sense of geography within the classic spaceship (prior to its destruction), achieved with beautiful, long arcing shots that travel around the outside.

The Infiltrator

In a summer full of superheroes and talking animals, Bryan Cranston’s new film The Infiltrator isn’t what you’d expect to find in the theatre. However, it is exactly what you’d expect to find Bryan Cranston doing. Cranston plays Robert Mazur. He’s a U.S. Customs agent in South Florida tasked with stopping the illegal drug trade that used the area as its primary port in the mid-1980s. Along with a new partner, Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo), Mazur goes undercover in an attempt to track the financial institutions that are complicit in the illegal drug business in order to use them to “get to the bad guys.” Robert Mazur becomes Bob Musella, a money launderer, and infiltrates (see what I did there) the cartels in order to get the evidence he needs to take them all down. Of course, this is a 1980 drug cartel, so if they figure out he’s playing them, he’ll be very dead, very quickly. The plot synopsis likely sounds like something you’ve heard before. This is because you have. While The Infiltrator might be based on a true story, it has a plot very similar to many fictional tales revolving around undercover cops and drug dealers. The cop that does it by the book with the partner who threw the book out the window? Check. The undercover cop who might be getting a little too close to the criminals he’s trying to bust? Check. The wife at home who wants him to quit before he ends up dead? Yup. Bring your “police movie trope” bingo card to The Infiltrator and you won’t even need the free space to win before act one is over. Of course, if there is one thing that The Infiltrator has which the rest of the genre is missing, it’s Bryan Cranston. While he’s on the opposite side of the drug business from his Breaking Bad character, the two still have quite a bit in common. Both have dangerous jobs, and families they’re trying to keep protected from it. Both of these jobs involve hanging out with drug dealers. Both of them really like their jobs. Walter White is certainly a part of Cranston here, even if this new version had a badge. And this is very much the Bryan Cranston show. John Leguizamo’s character takes the middle of the movie off entirely, Bob’s fake finance, played very well by Diane Kruger, doesn’t show up until just before that point. The most nuanced character in the film, Benjamin Bratt as cartel distributor Roberto Alcano is also underutilized. He’s the “bad guy” that Bob is trying to get to, only it turns out he’s not so bad a guy. He’s a businessman with a wife and a family and hopes and dreams and concerns about the future. He’s not the villain the drug dealers were supposed to be in the 80s. He’s an opportunist, to be sure, but this was the 80s, who wasn’t? To be sure, The Infiltrator has some great moments of tension and suspense. What’s unfortunate is that those great moments are few and far between.

LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM LOCATION INSIDE! Spain’s Primary Residence Housing Stock Falls First Time in 15 Years

The housing stock in Spain, for primary residences, fell by 0.71% in 2015, representing its first reduction in at least 15 years, to stand at a total of 18.97 million homes, according to statistics from the Ministry of Public Works. In contrast, the number of non-main residence properties continued to grow, following the decline registered in 2011, and stood at a total of 6.56 million at the end of 2015, which is 2.3% higher than the previous year. This type of property contributed to the total stock of homes in Spain closing last year with an increase of 0.19% which, nevertheless, represents its lowest annual increase in the last decade. Thus, El Economista reported that the total of Spain’s housing stock at the end of

2015 reached some 25.54 million homes, with 74.2% of the total being primary residences (down from 75% the previous year) and the rest for other uses. The Ministry’s data highlights that, at the end of 2015, housing stocks of primary residences fell in all regions while, at the same time, the stocks of non-main residence properties increased in all regions. Regarding the total housing stock, Andalucía is the region which registered the greatest number of completed homes, with 4.40 million, followed by Catalonia (3.89 million), Valencia (3.17 million) and Madrid (2.95 million), while the regions to register the least number of completed homes were La Rioja (201,553 homes), Navarre (317,420) and Cantabria (363,195). kyero.com

Fixed Rate Mortgages on the Increase

propert y services

According to the latest quarterly report published by the Spanish Mortgage Association (AHE), some 57.3% of the new mortgages contracted in May were of fixed or mixed interest rate types, while the remaining 42.7% were variable rate mortgages. The AHE pointed out that the fixed rate mortgages “are gaining ground” due to the advantages they offer in terms of stability, both to the mortgage holder and the financial institutions in an environment of low interest rates. Specifically, 31.4% of the mortgages formalised in May were made with a fixed rate of over 10 years, while 25.9% had an initial fixed rate of between one and 10 years, and the remaining 42.7%, had a variable interest rate of less than one year. The Association also highlighted the increase in the number of loans with a fixed rate to term, which accounted for 31.4% of the transactions, compared with 4.95% in 2015. Moreover, El Mundo reported that the outstanding mortgage balance registered in April 2016, the latest data available, shows a year-on-year decline of 3.41%, to 673,983 million euros. The AHE stated that: “Since the process of adjustment in the Spanish mortgage market began in 2010, the outstanding mortgage balance has continued to decrease at a sustained pace. However, the latest data shows a clear trend of deceleration, which indicates that this process is in its final phase.” The report shows the same behaviour in the managed mortgage credit balance, which in April stood at 684,132 million euros, representing a drop of 3.6%, yearon-year. As with the mortgage lending balance, the real estate credit balance in Spain has experienced a similar adjustment process. Thus, the total real estate credit balance maintained the same trend observed in earlier periods, standing at 716,373 million euros in the first quarter of the year, representing a year-on-year decrease of 6.47%. By sectors, the real estate household credit balance, which accounted for 76.3% of the total real estate credit, decreased by 4.7%, to 546,795 million euros. Credit for real estate activities, representing 17.9% of the total real estate credit, decreased by 11.9% in March, to 128,106 million euros. In addition, credit for construction activities recorded a reduction of 10.9%, with a balance of 41,472 million euros. kyero.com

Housing Prices Fell by 5.1% to May, Say Notaries

A report published last week by the General Council of Notaries notes that the average price per square metre of housing in Spain has dropped in value since the beginning of the year. According to the Notaries’ data, between January and May the average price of housing fell from 1,330 euros/m2, accumulating a decline of 5.1%, to stand at 1,261 euros/m2, which is its lowest figure registered so far this year and represents a price reduction of 1.6% compared to May of last year. The number of home sales increased by 11.4% yearon-year in May, reaching a total of 38,845 transactions. However, this figure represented a slight decline compared with the number of transactions registered in March and April. Moreover, the Notaries’ data shows that home sales accumulated a total of 181,056 transactions up until the end of May, which is an increase of 16.1% over those registered in the same period of 2015. Sales of second hand homes accounted for some 26,889 of the transactions, representing an increase of 16.8% year-on-year, while sales of single family dwellings increased by 9.2% year-on-year, to a total of 7,885 transactions. In contrast, sales of new homes fell by 22.6%, compared to the same period of 2015, to a total of just 2,495 transactions. However, according to the Notaries, “the increase in home sales registered in May reflects the underlying path of recovery of the housing market”. kyero.com

Number of Completed Homes Rose by 2% to April

The Ministry of Public Works’ latest data shows that, between January and April 2016, the construction of a total of 14,098 homes were completed in Spain, which represents a rise of 2% compared with the same period of the previous year, when some 13,818 new homes were completed.

In 2007, the construction of new homes reached their all-time high with a total of 641,419 completions in the year. This figure has fallen by 93%, compared with the end of 2015, when a total of 45,152 homes were completed. Of the total number of homes completed up until the end of April, some 98.6% of them (13,842) related to private developers’ projects and 1.4% (256) related to public administrations. Compared with the previous year, the construction of homes by private developers increased by 1.6%, while public administrations’ projects climbed by 34.7%. Among the private initiative, El Mundo

reported that 8,118 of the completions corresponded to commercial companies, with a year-on-year increase of 9.6%; 5,415 to individuals and communities of owners (+9%), and 219 to cooperatives (-62.2%). Moreover, there were 90 completion certificates for other types of private developer works. In addition, the Ministry’s data shows that the liquidation value of the material execution of these works dropped by 8.2% to the end of April, to a total of 1,704.8 million euros. kyero.com

Brexit implications for donation and inheritance

Antequera dolmens receive UNESCO World Heritage status

As speculation continues into the implications of severing ties with Europe, there are some emerging realities that we should already be contemplating. The impact on donation and inheritance tax in Spain is one. There are many imponderables when it comes to considering what the implications of being out of the EU will mean for British people with property in Spain. However, although there are many uncertainties, there are also some areas of law in Spain that have been directly influenced by the UK’s membership of Europe and may face an about turn in the future. One of these is that of the tax paid on donations and inheritance in Spain. Recently the European courts required Spain to modify its inheritance and donation tax laws. Previous to this non-residents were charged a much higher level of inheritance tax and donation tax than residents. However, the European court ruled that this was against European law and that Spain must comply. Now, following Brexit, this protection could be removed from the British when it comes to inheriting or donating their property and goods. Once they are no longer members of the European Union the European laws will no longer apply and Spain will be able to reinstate the differential. Because of this likely reversion to a higher Spanish inheritance tax and donation tax rate, if you are a non-resident or a resident leaving your estate to a non-resident, you might consider donating now rather than waiting until Britain leaves the EU with all its associated consequences. It could make a big difference to the amount you are able to

Spain has a new UNESCO destination to put on your must-see sites in Spain, along with Gibraltar. The Antequera dolmens have officially received UNESCO World Heritage status. The UN cultural agency had been gathered in Istanbul to decide whether or not the elaborate structures, dating back to between 5,000 and 22,000 BC, were worthy of the label. The Dolmens are an ensemble of megalithic monuments made up of the Menga and Viera dolmens and the tholos of El Romeral. They are described as outstanding examples of megalithic architecture and are among the most recognised and quoted in the world. The Menga Dolmen is famous for its significant geographical location – on the summer solstice, 21 June, the morning sun shines over the peak of the Peña de los Enamorados and straight along the dolmen’s entrance corridor. The specific positioning would have had mystical importance for the prehistoric tribes who built it. It is believed the architects were farmers who resided in the Guadalhorce valley during the Neolithic period and copper age. It would have taken the combined effort of several communities to source and transport the stones and to complete the constructions. They have remained remarkably intact having been built at least 5,000 years ago. Gibraltar’s Gorham cave has also been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. http://www.expatica.com

leave your inheritors. In Spain, it should be remembered that you must pay inheritance tax before the name on the title deed is changed. This means that if your inheritor has a substantial amount of inheritance tax to pay, they may find it difficult to take up possession of their inheritance at all. If you do decide to donate your property the process is called the ‘Donación de bienes’ and involves signing a new title deed. There will still be donation tax to pay but, if you donate now, you will be charged at the same level as a resident in the area where the assets are located, even if you are donating to a nonresident, provided that the non-resident lives in the EU. So, for example if your property is in the Comunidad Valenciana and you want to donate your property to your non-resident children in the UK before you die it may be that they currently will not have any donation tax to pay at all. This represents a big potential saving for non-residents and perhaps one to take advantage of as it could change with Brexit. The figures speak for themselves. As things stand at the moment, if you decide to donate a property valued at €100,000 to your child the Spanish donation tax would be €0. If, however, the UK is no longer a member of the EU then the cost to the child would be €12,415. A sizeable difference. Unfortunately, after Brexit, there will be no guarantee that you can benefit from the protection that the EU law gave. Should you decide to proceed now and donate your property, our Ábaco legal department will be ready to help. http://www.expatica.com

August Festivals in Spain Hot Summer August Festivals in Spain There is no doubt that August is one of the best and most entertaining months for you to be in Spain. With a myriad of fiestas Spain lined up for you during this month, fun and enjoyment is guaranteed during your stay for the month of August. Almost all of the major cities in Spain host some kind of festival, feria or fair so wherever you plan to stay in Spain, you won’t be far from one or more of them to enjoy. Festa Major de Gracia in Barcelona (August 15 to 21) This one-week festival is one of the best fiestas Spain offers and a firm favourite for the residents of Barcelona. Famous for its elaborate distinction and colourful decorations, this festival offers you all types of music ranging from classical jazz to the all-loved rock. Alongside the music come workshops, exhibitions, street markets, sporting activities, parades, dramatic performances, and many other activities that are specifically designed for kids. You just have to attend this festival if you really want to appreciate what festivals in Spain have to offer. Verbenas Celebration of neighbourhood saints in Madrid On the other side of Spain in Madrid, the month of August is more so tied to celebrating typical districts that make up Madrid. For instance, August 7 is San Cayetano’s day and then August

10 is San Lorenzo day. All of the fiestas Spain has this month of August that are held in Madrid are marked in terms of processions, street side concerts, and open-air dancing. The fiestas in Madrid are usually very colourful and they are mostly held in the neighborhoods of Lavapies and La Latina. Malaga Feria in Malaga (August 13 to 20) During this week-long festival, the people of Malaga commemorate the reconquest of this city by Ferdinand and Isabella in the year 1487. The weeklong festival is usually characterized by fireworks and flames. During such fiestas Spain has, there are lots of street dancing and acrobatics. If you want to appreciate the vibrant and cheerful nature of the residents of Malaga, this is the kind of a festival that you really have to attend. This kind of funfair will most definitely offer a great deal of entertainment and laughs for adults and children both. Again, music plays all night long so the entertainment does not cease. Last but not least, the people of Seville also celebrate Exaltacion Del Rio Guadalquivir, a festival which runs from the 24th to the 27th of every August. You simply have to attend these fiestas Spain offers. Malaga – Andalucia Now one of the largest festivals in Spain, the Feria de Malaga lasts for at least 7 days and is celebrated all around the city. A large purpose built park located close to the exhibition centre and only 15 minutes from Malaga International airport. The Feria is held between the 15th and 22nd August and features music, shows, dancing, horses, fireworks and daily processions through the historic the centre of the city. Although the main party is held on the outskirts of the city we would highly recommend a visit in

to the old quarter in central area of Malaga for a more traditional stroll around a decorated city prepared for the annual festival. Tomatina Festival Spain Bunol in Valenica is home to the La Tomatina the famous battle of the tomatoes. Tons of ripe tomatoes are thrown by locals historically from warring towns and villages – followed by music and dancing. Each year the party gets bigger and better and is celebrated on the last Wednesday of August, in 2015 the falls on the 26th August (in 2016 the festival will be held on the 30th August). Many thousands of people now make their way from all over Spain and abroad to battle it out in the world’s largest food fight. Around one hundred tons of ripe tomatoes are used in this unique street festival. Bunol normal population is around 9.000 inhabitants, this increases to around 60,000 during festival time. However there is a limit to the number of places available for the actual tomato throwing spectacle so if you are thinking of participating make sure you book early. You can buy and exchange tickets at http://latomatina.info. Antequera – Andalucia The Antequera is a historic city located in the heart of the province of Malaga in Andalucia and is home to Fiesta de la Recoleccion and popular flamenco festivals during August. The Royal Feria is one of the oldest in Spain and includes a romeria a pilgrimage to the town of rocio in Huelva. Locals dress up in traditional costumes and make the

pilgrimage in dressed up old wagons, on horse-back or simply walk the route. The Santa Maria Flamenco Night is a popular flamenco event usually held at the beginning of August. Benahavis – Andalucia Virgen del Rosario – Sevillian mass and procession is normally held between the 11th and 15th August. Benahavis is located in the foothills behind Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Ojen – Andalucia Enjoy this ancient culture at the Festival of Flamenco singing in Ojen. Normally held during at the beginning of August each year this is a perfect opportunity to see live some of the top renowned singers and dancers in Spain. Top artists include Farruquito, Maria Toledo, David Palomar, Miguel de Tena, Cancanilla de Malaga and Julian Estrada. National – Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary This festival is not unique to Spain as it is celebrated throughout the world. It is held on the 15th of August and is a national holiday in Spain. A number of towns will hold colourful processions and firework displays. http://spainguides.com

The Reversal

The beat of a butterfly’s wing will, in time affect the whole of mankind. Alqueria is about to suffer from its very own ‘Butterfly Affect’ set in motion by one Loco Paco idiot of the Parish. Manuela had had a hard night, just why it was so hard perhaps should be left well and truly veiled for the purpose of this discussion. She was completely ‘empanada’. Her breakfast preparations never changed and therefore could be attended to without the need for conscious thought. As her neurons had clumped together for safety severely retarding her metal processes, conscious thought was not possible at the moment. Bearing the above in mind, we turn to Loco Paco who had been despatched from the Alquerian seat of power to summon Manuela to the monthly meeting of the Alquerian Cabinet. The Cabinet Office, that great think-tank at the heart of the Village Republic, guardian of the democratic principles for which it stands located in a back room just above ‘Dusty’ Pepe’s baker’s shop in the Calle Horno. Now Loco Paco was a simple lad, both in deeds and thought and after knocking on Manuela’s front door was taken aback at her appearance. Even the slow witted Paco could see that her head wasn’t working properly. Having dutifully passed on the request for her presence she answered with, after translating into English what sounded like “Oooomeeeead, who are you? Bloody hell, who am I? Ooooohhhhh”. Paco decided she needed sleep so off he toddled back to the Cabinet Office

viewpoint

bent on doing Manuela a good turn, something most of the Village lads have already done. Now we move our attention to the Cabinet Office where Paco had just informed Poyato and Rodriquez that Manuela had moved to Portugal where, listening to Fado had so depressed her that she had disguised herself as an itinerant cucaracha gelder and moved to Alaska. Manuela in fact was simply hungover. This was a wonderful oratory from Paco who could fantasize with gusto it was reality which caused him problems. Now two items were on the agenda, one: Whether or not to place a no parking sign outside the town hall and two: The Republic should be dissolved and Rodriquez declared perpetual dictator. Rodriquez tabled this proposal every month and every month it was outvoted. But to today, thanks to Paco’s white lie Manuela was absent. After approving the no parking sign, which was irreverent as the dysfunctional folk of the Pueblo will take no notice of it whatsoever, Rodriquez’s motion was voted upon with Poyato against and Rodriquez for. Both men looked at Paco who is dimmer than a environmentally friendly light bulb. Paco was wondering why the two men kept staring, it unnerved him and prompted an unscheduled bladder contraction. He raised his hand to leave the room and Rodriquez was jubilant two votes to one. The Republic was duly abolished. Will Manuela take it laying down, an unfortunate choice of phrase perhaps but we will see.

Yet Again!

I know my dislike of and my inability to cope with technology is a recurring theme, but I am the injured party here! Normally I push the laptop’s start button, upon which it tells me the date and time, superimposed on a nice picture. I click the picture and a blue screen appears with a box that suggests that I put in my password. I put in my password, the laptop thinks about it for a bit, then it leaps into action and produces all those little pictures called icons; I always thought icons were religious paintings of saints, or people who represented greatness in one form or another. However, if it wants to call them icons……. I select one, and it promises to give me access to my inbox via Google. Now it starts to get sticky – it wants another password! For the sake of peace and quiet I tap one in, and a little blue circle appears and starts revolving around itself, presumably so that I have something to watch while it pretends to be undertaking a task of monumental difficulty. Then, all of a sudden, we’re done! Not yesterday we weren’t! I got the picture. I got the icons. I put in the password. Password not recognised, it said, so I carefully typed it in again, giving it the benefit of my having typed it in wrongly. Password not recognised, it maintained. This was a job for Pete, with his superior qualities of self-control and patient persistence. He and the laptop locked horns, and battle was met. Google, in a pretence of civility,

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk suggested that he might want to change the password. Why? what was wrong with the old one? Ah! Google said, it is being used by someone else. Of course it is! It’s being used by us, you moronic machine! Would you like to create a new account? Google asked in a disinterested way. No, there’s nothing wrong with the old one. Sorry, can’t help you then, Google sighed and shrugged its shoulders. All right then, if you insist, we’ll create a new account. You’ll need a password, smirked Google. We invented a new password, and Google acquiesced, with bad grace. However, it had not given up. To get to our account Google insisted that we go via the scenic route - we had to go through 7 different steps via the new account to get to where we wanted to be. Yet today I went straight in! There is nothing as cussed as a machine!

According to a report by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, approximately 8 million tons of food are wasted in Spain each year — making it the seventh highest food waster in the EU. A study by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization revealed that around 42 percent of food waste in Europe takes place in people’s households, 60 percent of which can be avoided by better practices. In Spain, 1.43 million tons of food are thrown in the trash annually, according to the ministry report. The Yo No Desperdicio [I Don’t Waste] website and mobile app, launched in November 2015 and February 2016 respectively, seek to present an alternative to this massive problem. Yo No Desperdicio is a sharing tool, similar to the platforms that facilitate ride-sharing or apartment exchanges. What’s being exchanged here, however, is food. This platform aims “to promote alternative ways of responsible and sustainable consumption, and to make us rethink our role as consumers, with the goal of reducing food waste at home,” Mari Cruz Martín, the project’s coordinator,

tells HuffPost Spain. The platform allows the exchange of both cooked foods and raw items, as long as the products are in decent condition and have not surpassed their expiry date. ““If you keep food from being thrown away, we all win.— Mari Cruz Martín. There are currently 420 registered users on the platforms from 35 Spanish provinces, and Cruz Martín says “the number of users keeps growing.” The platform offers a very simple food-sharing method. Users log into the website or app and post an ad describing the food they want to offer, complete with the item’s name, picture capturing its current state, portion, location and an expiration date. Both parties then arrange for the free delivery of the products. “If you keep food from being thrown away, we all win,” Cruz Martín says. The Yo No Desperdicio initiative is the brainchild of the Prosalus NGO, a group that for the past 30 years has worked to promote, protect and guarantee human rights to food, water, health and sanitation. “Food waste is among the many causes of hunger, even if many people are not aware of it,” says Cruz Martín. One of the project’s main goals is to

create awareness in the community about food waste. “The world throws away a third of everything it produces, and people are not aware that this waste has a huge impact on the world’s nutrition, and on the availability and the prices of products in other countries,” says Cruz Martín. While the project is grounded in acknowledgment of the global food waste challenge, it ultimately seeks to “create a citizen network that is committed to responsible consumption and to giving products a second chance,” Cruz Martín explains. Cruz Martín admits that users have been slow to trust the platform, but she is confident that with time, the food sharing system will stop sounding like “science fiction” to the masses. More than 100 pounds of food have been exchange so far, including dairy, fruits and vegetables, sodas, dried fruit, eggs and canned foods. This may sound like a modest amount, compared with how much food is thrown away by households every year, but “if we all start to make small changes in our daily routines, we will be able to change these numbers,” says Cruz Martín. http://www.huffingtonpost.com

The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) saltwater lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with

families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet.

You're probably familiar with all the typical categories of pet devotees. Dog and cat lovers are so devoted to their favoured species that it's been a longrunning debate about which is the better pet, and each side makes its feeling known far and wide. Even people with less common pets like lizards or ferrets are mostly understood for their fanatic ways, but that's not as unusual as it gets. But would you own a pet skunk, donkey or cockroach? creatures their pets. Capybara Related to the guinea pig, this native South American is the largest rodent in the world. Fully grown, the capybara is on average 4 feet (1.2 meters) long and usually weighs more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms). It's rare to find these obscure animals as pets, but there's one capybara named Caplin Rous who's gained a loyal Internet following. His owner, Melanie Typaldos, who lives in Buda, Texas, has made it her mission to educate people about this very unusual rodent. Caring for This Pet Typaldos says capybaras are never fully domesticated, so you must

handle one often while it's young to establish a human-rodent relationship. Capybaras need lots of outdoor space and places to swim, since they are semi-aquatic creatures. They eat a steady diet of grass and require fresh drinking water at all times. Is This Pet Right for You? Capybaras need a lot of attention, plenty of room to roam and some type of swimming pool. They can be territorial and could bite with their large teeth. Typaldos doesn't recommend capybaras for families with young children, because the rodents aren't nearly as tolerant as some other domestic pets, like dogs. Like most of the animals on our countdown, your city or state may have exotic pet legislation that would keep you from owning a capybara, so always check the laws before bringing one home.

Used Peugeot 208 review

Peugeot has built some great small cars, but in recent years the company has been left behind by rivals that make better driving, more reliable, higher-quality models. So it was great to see Peugeot fighting back when it launched the 208 in 2012. This model was so good that we crowned it Best Supermini at our 2012 New Car Awards. At the time, we said: “Peugeot is back on top of the small car class. The 208 has got it all: style, quality, space and kit, while it’s good to drive and super-efficient, too.” With the first examples now four years old and a facelifted 208 out in 2015, this small car now makes a great second-hand buy. The Peugeot 208 hit showrooms in 2012 and has been on sale for four years. It is this first-generation model that we're focusing on here.

History The 208 debuted in June 2012 in three and fivedoor hatchback forms. There were 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines, plus 1.4 or 1.6-litre diesels, with five or six-speed manual gearboxes. The standard 1.4 HDi diesel emitted 98g/km of CO2; the e-HDi (with stop/start) emitted 87g/ km. The 1.6 HDi was offered in 92bhp or 115bhp guises; only diesels came with an EGC automatic option. By April 2013 there was a 208 GTi on sale, with 200bhp. A 30th anniversary special edition GTi appeared in November 2014, with 208bhp – just 100 came to the UK. In June this year, a revised 208 hit dealers, with even more efficient engines, extra safety options plus a tweaked exterior design. A GT Line trim has also been added, with sportier detailing.

Which one should I buy? All of the engines are perky enough, with the three-cylinder 1.0 and 1.2-litre units being more fun than you’d imagine. We’d avoid the EGC automatic gearbox, though, as it’s not very slick. Entry-level cars are badged Access; they offer ESP, electric front windows, cruise control and remote central locking. Access+ features air-con plus electrically adjusted and heated door mirrors, while Active adds alloy wheels, touchscreen multimedia, Bluetooth and a split rear seat. The 208 Allure comes with privacy glass, extra chrome trim, automatic lights and wipers and dual-zone climate control, while the

Feline gets 17-inch alloys, DAB radio, sat- nav and a panoramic roof. Buy a 208 XY and it’ll feature rear parking sensors, too.

What to look for: Wipers The wipers can judder across the windscreen when they’re activated. The best fix seems to be to switch to some aftermarket blades, like Bosch versions.

Media system The touchscreen multimedia system can freeze for no apparent reason. Switching it off and then on again usually fixes things – but not always.

Brakes Some owners have found their front brake pads need to be replaced after little more than 5,000 miles; premature disc wear can be an issue, too. Suspension Knocks can emanate from the 208’s front suspension, usually because the top mounting bush in one of the shock absorbers needs to be replaced.

Interior You’ll either love or hate the 208’s dash design, with a small steering wheel set below the instruments. But it’s well built and looks good – although rear access in three-door cars is tricky. Boot space is also decent, at 285 litres (or 1,076 litres with the rear seats folded), if not classleading.

Running costs All 208s need to be serviced annually or every 20,000 miles for petrol-engined cars; for diesels it’s 12,500 miles. Check-ups alternate between minor (£295) and major (£425), but after three years discounted servicing is available at £140 or £250 respectively using OE parts. Unusually, most Peugeot dealers also offer maintenance using pattern parts, with the services priced from £115. Diesel engines have a timing belt that needs replacing at 10 years or 112,500 miles (£345 or £295 if pattern parts are used). Fresh brake fluid is required every two years (£49) and coolant after four years or 80,000 miles, then every 12 months or 20,000 miles (£70).

Recalls There have been seven recalls for the 208 already, which isn’t encouraging. The first was in July 2012 and affected the bonnet. Two months later came the next action as two cars were affected by braking issues. ESP glitches led to 14 cars being recalled in December 2012, while fuel leaks brought another action in February 2014. A further recall was issued at the same time for suspension failures; the sixth came in May 2014. The last recall concerned failure of the subframe mountings. Driver Power owner satisfaction Having made its debut in 49th place in the 2014 Driver Power satisfaction survey, the 208 slipped to number 73 in 2015 and then 84 last year. Owners like the low running costs (48th), reliability (52nd) and ride quality (53rd), while the handling (68th) is good, too. But the car’s practicality (101st), in-car tech (104th) and ease of driving (124th) all got the thumbs down. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk

She wanted him to know the misery he’d put her through.” If you enjoy reading thrillers this will not disappoint you. The suspense will keep you riveted throughout. With a dramatic opening and a thrilling finale which takes a lot of beating it’s an enjoyable read from a well-established author. This is one for the boys. Two young girls have been abducted after having replicated a Thelma and Louise Las Vegas, doing the works: gambling, drinking to excess and partying temporarily abandoning their respectability and studies. Zoe was a PhD student just needing to let her hair down and have fun. Girls behaving badly. So how come Zoe Sutton was still fighting for her life after the two girls were abducted and drugged even 15 months later? Was she such a bad girl that she needed to be punished by a psycho who believed in his demented mind that he was performing a clean-up act? She was guilty of a lack of respect for her fellow citizens. Is this a crime comparable to murderers and rapists? “My crime is disrespect? Do I really deserve to die for displaying bad manners?” It might sound a bit corny and far-fetched but when you are trussed up by a monster vying for your blood do you have a leg to stand on? Apparently not. An honourable killer? An interesting paradox but it doesn’t make sense in a logical world, does it? What a warped view of society. What a dangerous man. Both girls were treated like disposable trash and there were others. Holli was left hanging from a hook in the ceiling just like a slice of beef. Zoe was next. It had been a random abduction. Zoe had the advantage, she wasn’t hanging and she was free to move and escape. Her car was visible and if she ran for it she might be able to find the cops and rescue Holli. A chance in a million considering that Zoe was still drugged. Attempting to rescue her friend would have been seen as a suicide mission. The monster was over 6 feet tall, strong and armed with a knife which he used to brand his victims with a Roman numeral and a whip like a dead snake which “possessed the power to devastate the human body.” Ten lashes wrecked most people. One of his victims was flogged more than forty times. Yes, Zoe was the one who got away and the story moves on 15 months. Every day she relives the nightmare knowing that the monster is still out there. Her life is ruined, she has ostracised her friends and family, needs weekly shrink sessions and still cannot deal with anger issues or guilt at

abandoning her friend.

A development provokes Zoe into responding irrationally and putting herself in danger and in the spotlight. “Murder victim found suspended” relayed on the news resurrected the nightmares from the deep recesses of her mind. “It was happening again. It was happening here” in San Francisco. Without thinking of the consequences she raced to the crime scene, ducked under the tape, gatecrashing the investigation and contaminating the crime scene. Consequently her impulsive behaviour made news and her image was shown on national tv only to be recognised by the killer who was determined to track her down and punish her once and for all! Ominous. And we know how that story goes. Another abduction. a race against time with an incompetent police force getting nowhere fast and a cold and calculating killer. Will Zoe survive the final reckoning or will she pay the ultimate price-her life? The suspense picks up in the right places and Zoe proves to be a powerful match for the Tally Man but will this be enough? A thrilling journey, a bit scary at times though but well worth a read. “Predators like these aren’t created perfect. They develop their methods from their errors. They’re damaged people inflicting more damage on innocent bystanders.” But that doesn’t justify their actions does it or make them less dangerous? Of course not. 36 members and guests made their way to this championship course for our 9am start. We were hoping that we would be able to get round before it got too hot but unfortunately for us we had a couple of slow groups in front of us and the round slowed to a snail’s pace of 5 hours! It appears that the marshal on duty that day couldn’t be bothered to speed them up. He drove past them on his buggy without saying anything to them. The course was in good condition for this time of year with a very light sanding of the greens made players think that they were slow when in fact it didn’t affect them at all. Results for the N.T.P. Competition; Hole 6 and 13 Mick Kennedy, hole 9 Bill Wylie, hole 17 Mr. P. Kay. The “2’s” pot contained €29 and this will be rolled

over to next week at Alicante Golf. Best guest this week was Mrs. P. Kerr with 29 pts. Silver category winners; 3rd G. Smith 29 pts. 2nd B. Wylie 30 pts. 1st Robbie Rea 36 pts. Gold Category winners; 3rd Hans Arvesen on L/H 35 PTS. 2ND P. Bradley 35 pts. 1st Carstan Landaas 36 pts. ENGLAND WORLD CUP WINNERS On Saturday, fifty years ago to the day - 30 July 1966 - England won the World Cup, defeating West Germany 4-2 after extratime at Wembley. England began with a 0-0 draw against Uruguay in Group One before beating both Mexico and France 2-0. Bobby Charlton and Roger Hunt scored against the Mexicans while Hunt netted twice against the French. In the quarter-finals, a Geoff Hurst header saw off 10-man Argentina who had Antonio Rattin sent-off before Bobby Charlton scored twice in a 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal. In the final, Helmut Haller put Germany ahead on 13 minutes before Hurst nodded in the equaliser six minutes later. After excitement at both ends of the field, England went in front on 77 minutes through Martin Peters. But with referee Dienst ready to call time, Wolfgang Weber struck a dramatic 89th minute equaliser to force extratime. England were gutted but they raised their game superbly and although controversy surrounded Hurst’s 101st minute ‘over the line’ goal that put his side ahead at 3-2, there was nothing wrong with the striker’s hat-trick strike late on which sealed a famous victory, prompting commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme to shout out: “Some people are on the pitch - they think it’s all over - it is now”. A crowd of 96,924 attended the final with 32 million watching on TV. England’s victorious 1966 team was: Banks; Cohen, Wilson, Stiles, J. Charlton, Moore, Ball, Hunt, Hurst, R. Charlton, Peters.

Wins for Torrevieja swimmers this weekend Another busy swimming weekend for Torrevieja swimmers. On Saturday 3 of the clubs team travelled to Benidorm for the XVII Memoria Juan Fuster Zaragoza Trophy. Racers divided into age categories saw Amy Connolly swim first in 50m freestyle and gained a new personal best of 38:39 knocking 3 and a half seconds of her previous time. Then Skye Burns finished a close 4th in her 50m freestyle Infantil category (32:56). Zoe Connolly swimming in the last individual race of the day worked hard in her 100m Individual Medley race to knock 2 seconds off her recent PB

and winning 3rd place with an added prize of a free ticket to Aqualandia, Benidorm. Well done girls an excellent end to the season. Then on the Sunday all were back in action, this time sea swimming at Torre de la Horadada. This year the organizers reversed the course making all 4 races swim anticlockwise around the bay, constantly against the tide and wind. This was the hardest race from the last five

years of competitions at this location. Amy made a good swim in the 500m race being placed 9th in the Alevin category with a time of 12:09. Next it was time for the furthest distance race – 1500m. Zoe came in before her other team members being placed 6th in her Alevin category, with a time of 26:40. Shortly followed by Skye, a year younger, but in the same category with a time of 29:00. Next in was Vicki Connolly in the Women’s Masters 50+ category. Vicki won 1st place for her category. Teammate Beryl Altabas came in 5th in the same category with a time 36:15. Well done to all – looking forward to the next season starting in September.

San Miguel Golf Society at Las Colinas. July 20th, 2016.

Even though in the midst of summer when numbers do tend to drop off, SMGS is retaining regularly high turn-outs, with 43 members and 9 guests making their way to Las Colinas for the 4th round of this year’s Eclectic Stableford competition. The course was in good condition especially the Greens after their recent maintenance. Only 2 players broke par Chris Hamblett with 27 points and current order of merit leader Steve Higgins with 38 points.

Today saw the final of this year’s Singles Match play between surfing Steve Higgins and the Nomadic Ben Price, after a hard fought game Steve came out the winner 3&2 congratulations to both players on reaching the final. Stableford results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Mary Cleary (28), 4th Brian Butler (30), Keith Stevenson (31), 2nd Gratten Forber (34) and 1st, Chris Hamblett (37). Silver Category: 5thh Eve Pettersson (30), 4th Hugh Reilly (31), 3rd Norman Cahill (32), 2nd Steve Davis (33 on CB), and 1st, Ken Flaherty (33 on CB). Gold Category: 5th Bjorn Pettersson (31 on CB), 4th Barry Roehrig (32 on CB), 3rd Darren Hancock (32 on CB), 2nd John Osborne (35) and 1st, with the best score of the day Steve Higgins (38). The actual Abacus winner disappeared before prize giving, so the bottle of wine made its way in to the hands of original runner up Derek Johnson. Two best visitor prizes went to runner-up Mitch Kaylor (30) and winner Darren Temple, with 31 points. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Barry Roehrig (5), Ben Price (7), Robin Eastman (10), George Maughan (14) and Bjorn Pettersson (17). Our thanks go to the staff at Las Colinas golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week’s meet will take place at La Finca. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers.

Froome can go on for ‘three or four more years’ says Brailsford

Chris Froome can continue competing at the highest level for “three or four more years”, Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford believes. Team Sky’s Froome, 31, became Britain’s first three-time Tour de France winner on Sunday when he added the 2016 race to his successes in 2013 and 2015. “He’s as hungry as ever,” Brailsford told BBC Radio 5 live. “Much of how far he can go will be about how much he can retain his desire,” Brailsford added. Before heading out to Rio to prepare for the Olympic Games, Froome will take part in Sunday’s RideLondon-Surrey Classic. He will lead a Team Sky squad which includes Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Christian Knees and Dutch sprinter Danny van Poppel. Froome’s three victories in four years follows Sir Bradley Wiggins becoming the first Briton to win the race in 2012. Brailsford said Froome manages to both focus on his own individual performance as well as be a “brilliant leader” for the team. “He’s very meticulous, he sends them a little text every night, he communicates well with them,” said Brailsford.

“Equally they can see that he is on it and so they believe in him. And when they believe in someone the commitment levels and the enjoyment levels go up a notch.” In the past Froome has received a tough reception from the French crowds, but the threetime champion believes the 2016 Tour has seen a “huge shift” in attitudes. He added: “You see people on the roads with supporter jerseys from other teams, from the French teams, and they really give it some: ‘Come on, allez Sky, allez Froome!’ “It’s heart-warming to feel that and feel there’s this respect now from the French public.” Often criticised for an understated personality, the rider hopes that this race allowed spectators and viewers to see more of his character. “I think people have found it hard to relate to me in the past,” Froome said. “That’s just the way I am, I’m not necessarily a hugely outgoing kind of guy. “I think as this race has gone on people have got to me know me a little bit better, know my character a little bit better.” Bbc.com

Pinatar Pirates 270 for 7 Torrevieja 148 for 8

Pinatar proved too strong for a spirited Torrevieja side and recorded a comprehensive victory in the latest ECCL Division Two encounter. Pinatar batted first and posted a very challenging 270 for 7 for the home side to chase down. R Singh top scored with 73 before being run out and then he was well supported by his counterparts P Singh and G Singh who scored 52 and 40 respectively. In reply, the home side plugged away gamefully from the first to last ball but they struggled to make of a positive inroad into the required total. They did, however, manage to deny the visitors maximum bowling points as they batted out their overs to record a score of 148 for 8. C Darwen, the opener, top scored with a fine 64 whilst there were notable contributions from Ciaran Gulchard (18) and Kailash Singh (21) who frustrated the Pinatar bowlers with their dogged resistance. Pinatar finally ended up with 19 points from the game, whilst Torrevieja amassed 5 points. Pinatar (19 points) beat Torrevieja (5 points) by 122 runs Pinatar 270 for 7 (R Singh 73, P Singh 52) Torrevieja 148 for 8 (C Darwen 64, Bittu Singh 4 for 23) Torrevieja,s next home game is 30th July against Levante, 1100 o’clock start.

Aguilas FC Promotion Push! After reaching the final round in the promotion play offs to the Segunda B last season Aguilas FC are making noises that they want to be up there again fighting in the forthcoming campaign. The Blue and Whites have started to put together their squad and already look to have signed some quality and experience, not to mention the signing of Ex Huercal Overa CF Head Coach Sebas Lopez, the man that took Los Huercalenses to the play offs in 2014-15. Using his influence Sebas has managed to tempt Campanas (Lorca Dep), Manzano (Huercal Overa), José David (Pulpileño), Paco (Mazarrón), Juanma Acevedo (Hércules), Pianelo (UCAM Murcia DH) & Pedro Chinchilla (Huercal Overa) all to join him at El Rubial next term. Aguilas BadgeAlso keeping the likes of Javi Méndez, Rubén Primo, Emilio & Javi Soto in the squad means that the club can build on last season’s fantastic effort, but taking that final step and achieving Segunda B stauts. Pre-season fixtures for the Blue and Whites are as follows: 27/07 – 21.00 – Águilas – Almería. El Rubial

A defining Season for Lorca Deportiva?

Much has happened in the football community in Lorca over the past few months with Xu Genbao expressing interest to unite the Lorca football world into one solid unit, to form Lorca FC. An agreement could not be reached between both parties so Lorca Deportiva will fight once again in the Tercera Division with a passion to reach the play offs for a second season in a row. After achieving promotion to the Tercera in the 2014-15 season Deportiva went on to have a fantastic year at the higher level, only conceding 16 goals in 34 games, finishing with a goal difference of +48 & add to that losing only four games throughout shows just how difficult it was for teams to break them down. Looking forward the club have appointed Sergio Sánchez (La Hoya B) as head coach after getting the La Hoya B side promotion at a canter. Also new arrivals on the playing staff are Antonio (Lorca FC B), Alberto Hortal (La Unión), Felix Bapé (Flagenfurt), Ortuño, Casado (La Hoya B), Gonzalo Guardiola (FC Jumilla), Dani (La Hoya B), Edu Alarte (La Hoya Lorca) and Michael (El Palmar). Remaining with the club will be Juan Daniel, Luismi, Chicho, Pele, Momprevil, Carrasco, Zaplana, Kuki, Omar & Pico. But they have lost Guille (El Palmar), Campanas (Águilas), Gerardo (Coruxo) & Fran Minaya (Cacereño) who have moved on to pastures new. A defining season for Deportiva? Certainly, as the newly formed Lorca FC have the budget and vision to push on for the La Liga 2. Deportiva need to have the support from the loyal fans not to mention the passion and desire to be up there with the Lorca FC neighbours.

hamilton takes the cahmpionship lead

Lewis Hamilton had the measure of Nico Rosberg when it mattered most and F1’s regulations need some serious rethinking… Lewis Hamilton put in a measured drive with an engine that may be his last before penalties come, as he claimed a record-breaking fifth Hungarian GP victory. Although Hamilton was told to “pick up the pace” and at one stage found himself just 0.4s ahead of Nico Rosberg as they navigated the traffic of Esteban Gutierrez, there was never the impression that Rosberg would – or could – attack. Conspiracy theorists will be questioning whether team orders were at play or whether Hamilton was trying to back Rosberg up into the chasers. However, the one thing is certain, the World Champion “owned it”, and now also owns the lead in the Drivers’ standings for the first time this season. Sebastian Vettel hunted down Daniel Ricciardo in the closing stages of the Hungarian GP while Kimi Raikkonen had a fantastic battle – at least for the spectators’ perspective – with Max Verstappen. After 70 laps Ricciardo beat Vettel by 0.674s and Verstappen was 0.385s ahead of Raikkonen. Vettel put it down to the nature of the track, saying “it was clear that if you are ahead you can be fairly aggressive.” What is really clear, though, is that aside from Raikkonen’s fastest lap time of the grand prix, the other three were lapping within three-tenths of each other. The title race may be a Mercedes-only tussle, but P3 at least is heating up. Ahead of the Hungarian GP weekend, the FIA issued clarification on the extensive restrictions on radio communications. What they failed to do in that directive was use any common sense. Sergio Perez crashed in Austria as Force India were not allowed to inform him of a pending brake failure. One race later Nico Rosberg was penalised for receiving information on how to avoid a repeat of his gearbox problem, a problem that could have resulted in his retirement but would not have caused a crash. I don’t agree, but I do understand. Moving onto Hungary, Jenson Button reports that the “pedal is stuck to

the floor.” He was told by the McLaren pit wall: “Do not shift, we have lost hydraulic pressure.” The Brit was able to continue only to be slapped with a drive-through penalty. His response: “The brake pedal going to the floor isn’t classed as a safety issue? Interesting.” We’d call it daft. F1 rules must be enforced The irony in Formula 1 is that even when there are rules that make sense, they are not always enforced. There was more controversy in qualifying as 11 drivers fell short of the 107% limit, yet all were permitted to continue with the weekend. Why have rules if you aren’t going to enforce them? planetf1.com
