Spain’s public debt grows further, hitting highest level since 1909
After taking on another €18 billion, the country’s ratio of borrowing now stands at 100.9% of GDP. Spain’s public debt rose in June by €18.549 billion, reaching a total of €1.107 trillion, the highest figure ever in absolute terms. As a percentage of GDP, the ratio of the country’s debt comes in at 100.9%, a record figure that even exceeds the 100.5% seen in March, which was when the ratio broke the 100% barrier for the first time. Such a figure has not been seen since 1909, when, according to records, debt levels reached 102% of GDP. Sources from the Economy Ministry say that the figures must be put into the context of the debt calendar Sources at the Economy Ministry say that the figures must be put into the context of the debt calendar, which can see peaks and troughs due to the differences between emission and repayment dates. The main maturity dates come in January, April, July and October. Once these factors are taken into account, the ministry says, the country’s growth is seen to be continuing the deceleration that began in 2013, and as such will achieve the target of 99.1% set out in the stability program by the end
of 2016. That’s to say, the expected growth in GDP for this year, which will dilute the percentage, should bring the figure down for the second year in a row. However, the European Commission does not believe that the government will manage to bring the debt ratio down this year. According to its forecasts, it believes that Spain will end the year with debt levels of 100.3% of GDP. But the Economy Ministry insists that the historically low cost of borrowing makes the debt levels sustainable. The intervention of the European Central Bank in the markets has in large part made this situation possible. Spain’s public debt has seen unstoppable rises since 2009. That year it reached 52.7% of GDP, compared to 39.4% just a year before. It continued to notch up percentage points at a huge speed until it passed the 90% barrier in 2013. That year, in March, it passed the 100% barrier for the first time in more than a century. April saw the ratio ease somewhat, but in May and June it picked up pace once more. elpais
Several injured in Costa del Sol theme park accident
SEVERAL thrill-seekers have been injured at a Costa del Sol theme park. According to reports, five were treated for whiplash while several others suffered minor cuts and bruises. The incident occurred on the Torre de Caida Libre ride at Tivoli World in Benalmadena. It is believed a ride descended much faster than usual owing to a problem with the upper anchorage. The emergency brakes had to be applied as the ride began plummeting towards the ground. The park says there were no serious injuries, adding that the ride will remain closed until further notice. expatica
Spain faces uphill battle to meet new EU emissions goals
Europe aims to reduce its total carbon footprint by 40%. THE EU has set substantial carbon footprint reduction goals and Spain will have to make massive strides to meet them. Europe aims to reduce its total carbon footprint by 40% from its 1990
levels by 2030. This mark is a much larger drop than that proposed by the UN. Spain’s acting environmental ministry has announced that, in order to lower emissions enough to meet the goal, the country must treble its efforts. expatica

Banks in Spain adjust strategy post-Brexit referendum
SPANISH banks have analysed their financial future in the wake of the UK's vote to leave the European Union and the uncertainty which currently reigns until Article 50 is triggered and the results of negotiations between Britain and the other 27 EU nations are known. Banca March says: “This new scenario undoubtedly affects our vision of investment risk levels, and we would recommend a more cautious approach in the medium term.” Banco Santander, which is present in the UK after buying out Abbey National in 2004, says its shares have lost 10% since the results of the referendum were made known. But their situation is not as drastic as that of Morgan Stanley, which estimates its average profits across its branches will shrink by a typical 18% by the end of 2018. Machinery, transport equipment, chemicals, fuel, insurance companies and the financial and banking sector in general will be the industries most likely to suffer, says Deutsche Asset Management. Bankinter, which is Dutch but heavily present on the Spanish high street, expects the next few months to see ongoing market volatility, especially as many UK fund managers have locked in investments in property in response to the flood of requests for reimbursement. “It seems improbable that the scenario postBrexit will be better than the one before it, and valuations will gradually be reduced – the only convincing factor for those looking to invest in the UK could be a more attractive market based upon lower prices – but the downside is that the stock markets will probably be blocked for some time,” Bankinter's third-quarter strategy report reads. Like Banca March, it recommends
'proactive caution in the market at this time'. Bankinter's Spanish arm advises 'a focus on selecting assets with healthy, solvent balances, with visible profits and an attractive dividend return, as a priority'. Amongst these, it recommends utilities, franchises and consumer goods. Bestinver, based in Spain, has just presented its strategic report for the third and fourth quarters of 2016 and reveals it is 'rotating progressively between portfolios in search of opportunities'. It cites insurance company MAPFRE, and BME, as replacements for Iberpapel and airports governing body AENA. Airline IAG, a fusion of British Airways and Iberia, has seen its share prices drop in response to fears the tourism sector will be affected because of the fall in the sterling making holidays in Spain more expensive, possibly leaving lower-income Brits to resign themselves to 'staycations' instead of foreign beach breaks. But Spain still hopes to capitalise on the future Brexit by hosting the City of London in Madrid. It will be competing against the likes of Frankfurt and Dublin if major financial corporations decide to pull out of the British capital, but the Greater Madrid region has begun planning an aggressive campaign to attract investors. USA-based bank JP Morgan believes Madrid would be 'the best city' for any possible relocation. The creation of a new 'City of Madrid' would have a huge and positive impact on Spain's economy and job market, as well as generating a high level of investment in property. thinkspain

Malaga receives more hours of sun than the whole of Spain. THE Costa del Sol is officially the sunniest place in Spain. Antonio Banderas duets with Barbra Streisand on her new Broadway album
ANDALUCÍA'S most famous native ever, actor Antonio Banderas has recorded a duet with legendary singer Barbra Streisand on her forthcoming album. The CD, Streisand's 35th and due for release next Friday (August 26) is titled Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway, and features double acts with some of her cinema colleagues singing tracks from famous musicals.
The Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway, 33, along with Django Unchained's Jamie Foxx, 48; The Hunt for Red October's Alec Baldwin, 58 – whose niece Hailey, 20, a model, was until recently Justin Bieber's girlfriend – and Wolverine's Hugh Jackman are among the star-studded line-up. Banderas will sing Take me to the world, from the musical Evening Primrose, alongside Streisand, 74, who chose him because he is 'such a romantic actor' that he would be 'perfect for the song'. Málaga-born Banderas, 56, who never misses his slot in the Good Friday parades in his home city, is no stranger to singing, having performed in musicals such as Evita and Nine, but was still 'surprised and flattered' at Barbra's proposal. Once he recovered, Banderas declared that his next thought was fear that he would 'not be good enough' to partner a veteran whom he described as having 'a velvet voice'. The song lyrics speak of people living inside huge warehouses who are afraid of going out into the outside world. Streisand is currently on tour in the USA presenting her new album, and it is rumoured that some of her duet partners may accompany her on stage at some of her concerts, which may include Banderas. expatica

Argentine judge to probe murder of Spanish poet Lorca
An Argentine judge known for investigating crimes committed during Spain’s civil war will probe the murder of poet Federico Garcia Lorca, a victims’ association said on Thursday. The Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory (ARMH), a group seeking justice for people tortured, killed and disappeared in the 1936-1939 war and the ensuing 36-year dictatorship, said it had made an official complaint to Maria Servini. Servini “accepted the complaint and has started working on the issue,” said Emilio Silva, head of the association. Servini has previously probed Spain’s dark and bloody recent past, having opened a lawsuit in 2010 to investigate rights violations during the war and dictatorship, invoking the principle of universal jurisdiction. In 2014, she issued arrest and extradition warrants for around 20 former Spanish officials, including ex-ministers of dictator Francisco Franco, to face justice in Argentina for alleged crimes against humanity. The extradition demand was rejected by Madrid but she will travel to Spain to question them. After Franco’s death in 1975, Spanish leaders signed an amnesty agreement seen as essential to preventing score-settling as they tried to unite the country and steer it toward democracy. ‘Executed by firing squad’ Spanish authorities
point to the deal in refusing to investigate alleged atrocities during the Franco era. Servini will ask “the Spanish government for any information related to the case that could exist in any archives,” said Silva, adding that she may visit Spain in person as part of the case. Garcia Lorca was 38 when he was killed by firing squad on August 19th, 1936, a month after Franco’s rebellion against a republican government sparked Spain’s civil war. The poet and playwright, whose works dealing with death, passion and injustice are widely studied at universities, is believed to have been buried in an unmarked grave near Granada in southern Spain. Several attempts to find his remains have failed, and archaeologists will try again next month. The ARMH filed its complaint on the basis of a 1965 document that for decades remained buried in the archives of the interior ministry, in which “for the first time the Franco state recognises Lorca’s assassination,” said Silva. The text, a report written by police in Granada, says that the poet was “executed by firing squad” and buried not very deep in the ground

Summer Beauty Tips
can absorb some of the oil. Pick a stain. In summer, lip stains are the way to go: they don’t feel heavy on your lips and won’t roll off with sweat.
Hair Get beachy. Taking a dip in the ocean and letting your hair air-dry for those perfectly beachy waves that scream summertime. Keep it wet. Before going into the ocean or the pool, wet your hair. This saturates the cuticle with water so that less chemicals can enter and damage the integrity of the hair.
Forget sun-parched skin or hair, humidity frizz, and other summer woes. Get your glow on and breeze through summer beautifully.
Makeup Change up your shades. As your skin gets that sun-kissed glow, you may need a different shade of foundation and concealer to accommodate changes between your winter and summer colouring. You can even opt for a tinted moisturizer! Cream eyeshadow will change your life! They are more water-resistant and longwearing than their powdery sisters, making them ideal for summertime. Use bronzer correctly. Keep it on the apples of the cheeks if you just want a little tint, or lightly apply it over your forehead and right below your cheek bone. Be sure to blend harsh lines and keep metallics to a minimum. Blot, don’t smear. If you need to remove oils or sweat from your face, taking a sheet of blotting paper and lightly dabbing your skin

Tiny Spanish publisher clones world's most mysterious book
It’s one of the world’s most mysterious books, a centuries-old manuscript written in an unknown or coded language that no one — not even the best cryptographers — has cracked. Scholars have spent their lives puzzling over the Voynich Manuscript, whose intriguing mix of elegant writing and drawings of strange plants and naked women has some believing it holds magical powers. The weathered book is locked away in a vault at Yale University’s Beinecke Library, emerging only occasionally. But after a ten-year quest for access, Siloe, a small publishing house nestled deep in northern Spain, has secured the right to clone the document — to the delight of its director. “Touching the Voynich is an experience,” says Juan Jose Garcia, sitting on the top floor of a book museum in the quaint centre of Burgos where Siloe’s office is, a few paved streets away from the city’s famed Gothic cathedral. “It’s a book that has such an aura of mystery that when you see it for the first time… it fills you with an emotion that is very hard to describe.” Siloe, which specialises in making facsimiles of old manuscripts, has bought the rights to make 898 exact replicas of the Voynich — so faithful that every stain, hole, sewn-up tear in the parchment will be reproduced. The company always publishes 898 replicas of each
work it clones — a number which is a palindrome, or a figure that reads the same backwards or forwards — after the success of their first facsimile that they made 696 copies of… another palindrome. The publishing house plans to sell the facsimiles for €7,000 to €8,000 ($7,800 to $8,900) apiece once completed — and close to 300 people have already put in pre-orders. Raymond Clemens, curator at the Beinecke Library, said Yale decided to have facsimiles done because of the many people who want to consult the fragile manuscript. “We thought that the facsimile would provide the look and feel of the original for those who were interested,” he said. “It also enables libraries and museums to have a copy for instructional purposes and we will use the facsimile ourselves to show the manuscript outside of the library to students or others who might be interested.” The manuscript is named after antiquarian Wilfrid Voynich who bought it around 1912 from a collection of books belonging to the Jesuits in Italy, and eventually propelled it into the public eye. Theories abound about who wrote it and what it means. For a long time, it was believed to be the work of 13th century English Franciscan friar Roger Bacon whose interest in alchemy and magic landed him in jail. But that theory was discarded when the manuscript was carbon dated and found to have originated between 1404 and 1438. Others point to a young Leonardo da Vinci, someone who wrote in code to escape the Inquisition, an elaborate joke or even an alien who left the book behind when leaving Earth. Its content is even more mysterious. The plants drawn have never been identified, the astronomical charts don’t reveal much and neither do the women. Does the book hold the key to eternal youth? Or is it a mere collection of herbal medicine and

QUESTION: I am trying to help my mother who has very bad health and wishes to move back to the UK but has not managed to sell her Spanish property yet. From a legal point are there any matters to take care of before she comes back? ANSWER 1. Make sure her Spanish will is in good order. There have been some changes to the laws recently which make it convenient to have a solicitor take a look at it. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure internet banking is set up on her Spanish bank account. 4. Your mother may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with her Spanish assets (in case a buyer is found and
she does not wish or is not able to visit Spain). 5. Look in to the advantages/disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on and waiting for a better price. From a tax point of view, if she is a resident and over 65, there is a certain advantage to selling before she loses her resident status in Spain, as she is entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. Meet her solicitor before you leave in case you later need to deal with things remotely. Depending on your circumstances there could be other things to do, but I would at least cover these items.

recipes? Scores have tried to decode the Voynich, including top cryptologists such as William Friedman who helped break Japan’s “Purple” cipher during World War II. But the only person to have made any headway is… Indiana Jones, who in a novel featuring the fictitious archaeologist manages to crack it. Fiction aside, the Beinecke Library gets thousands of emails every month from people claiming to have decoded it, says Rene Zandbergen, a space engineer who runs a recognised blog on the manuscript, which he has consulted several times. “More than 90 percent of all the access to their digital library is only for the Voynich Manuscript,” he adds. Only slightly bigger than a paperback, the book contains over 200 pages including several large foldouts. It will take Siloe around 18 months to make the first facsimiles, in a painstaking process that started in April when a photographer took detailed snaps of the original in Yale. Workers at Siloe are currently making mock-ups before they finally set about printing out the pages in a way that makes the script and drawings look like the real deal. The paper they use — made from a paste developed by the company — has been given a special treatment so it feels like the stiff parchment used to write the Voynich. Once printed, the pages are put together and made to look older. All the imperfections are re-created using special tools in a process kept firmly secret by Garcia, who in his spare time has also tried his hand at cryptology. “We call it the Voynich Challenge,” he says. “My business partner… says the author of the Voynich could also have been a sadist, as he has us all wrapped up in this mystery.” thelocal

The Dark Web – Where is it? What is it? Most importantly, Is it a bad place? Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help, you can contact me to make an appointment at my workshop or clinic (which is at Maloan’s bar in Albox). Let’s start with a quick reminder of what the Web is, and how it works. The internet is a web (probably one of the best analogues as it accurately describes exactly how these things are connected) of interconnected computer servers whose function is to traffic information from anywhere to anywhere. For it to work it require 2 things: The first is an indexing system and the second is a complex way of transferring this information over this web of computers. Every website that you visit has it’s pages indexed and this information is made available to every other indexing server out there. Where do you find one of these indexing servers? Type “google.co.uk” or “yahoo.co.uk” or any one of a hundred other similar search engines and you have found a place where these indexes are stored. The second system is a great deal more complicated and is constantly evolving! Essentially, everything sent over the web is broken down into tiny packets of information. In these packets is everything that is needed to ensure it gets to where it’s going and that it hasn’t been tampered with on the way.
Dog version of the Olympics arrives in Britain
rely on daily. This is the visible or surface web. The deep web is simply an extension of this and has pages that are deliberately not indexed or are some way obfuscated to prevent being found. Is this bad? Well it is also used by Banking systems to ensure safe money transfers, video on demand and don’t forget your web mail. All these use the Deep Web! Let’s not forget, during any form of conflict, all sides used similar techniques and methods to transfer information back to their bosses. I’m sure James Bond (007) used “Back Doors” and “Dead Letter Drops” to survive. All this is done on the deep web. The Dark Web is part of the Deep Web that sits on the DarkNet structure. This is that invisible network that can only be accessed with specific software, configurations, or authorization, often using non-standard communications protocols and ports. OK now you are absolutely no wiser let’s see if we can make it a little more real. Hands up everyone that has used a Tor Browser or Tor Messenger or for that matter download music or a movie using torrent. Would you be surprised when I tell you that you are using the deep web and in parts the dark web? Well if you believe Hollywood or any of the government agencies then it is a place where terrorist, paedophiles, perverts, assassins and all the scum of the earth hide. We all use part of it and there it nothing too bad about us!
THE canine version of the Olympics has arrived in Britain with dogs hoping to give Usain Bolt a run for his money. More than 2,900 pets are arriving from all over the world today to take part in the largest agility festival for man’s best friend. Rather than Rio, dogs are heading for the impressive setting of Rockingham Castle in Leicestershire for a spectacular as exciting and competitive as anything staged in the Olympic stadium. The International Agility Festival is attracting dogs and handlers from 17 countries and will see sprightly spaniels and clever collies tackle courses that would challenge the most experienced of Olympic equestrian riders. Not that competition is only open to traditional working breeds. Britain’s R.Kelly, a four year old Staffordshire bull terrier, features in a trailer produced by the Kennel Club organisers of the three-day event, showing him tackling some of the difficult obstacles that await competitors. Stars from overseas include Coma, a striking white Swiss shepherd from Spain and cute Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Mabel from Germany. They will be joining fellow participants in the 16 rings set up for the 200 separate class competitions being staged. Rather than an Olympic gold medal, dogs and handlers will be eyeing up the prestigious Nations Cup, Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said: “The Kennel Club International Agility Festival is one of the highlights of the agility calendar and there are such a different range of competitions for everyone, from the International Young Handler competition and the Nations Cup for the leading competitors, to the companion dog shows “It’s fantastic to see so many people from all across the world attend and compete at the festival. Agility is the most popular dog sport in the UK and is a brilliant way to keep fit and healthy with your dog. “The festival is a testament to agility’s ever growing popularity.” For more information on the Kennel Club International Agility Festival, please visit w w w.the ke nne lc lub.org.uk / agilityfestival or www.facebook. com/Dogagility Coma has come all the way from Spain to compete

His Masters Voice For anyone like myself now fifty (or over) the 78 record will be the earliest remembered recorded music. 78s were first made in 1898 and manufacture continued right up until the 1970’s. In the mid 70s I got a hand me down Dansette Record Player; in funky red and white vinyl, this portable player came as a box with a locking lid. I played a few of the 78’s in my parents collection but mainly due to the nifty arm and central pin it meant that playlists could be created by stacking 7 inch singles on top of each other. At a stroke the need for getting up and changing the record every three minutes extended to wow about ten minutes if three or even four records would do their job and drop onto the turntable and play. Going way back; we can thank the Manu Musa brothers, three Moorish scholars who lived in Baghdad in the Ninth Century for the earliest known mechanical music devices. They designed and built water powered musical organs; these contained a cylinder with raised pins which rotated at a set speed and struck metallic fingers designed to produce different pitches. Windup musical boxes are made to a similar design over a thousand year later. In the thirteenth century a Flemish bell ringer

designed a device on which the rotating drum’s raised pins hit levers connected to his church bells. Two hundred years later again in Flanders; Nicholas Vallin created a clock with a revolving barrel and bells inside. The pins on the barrel could change position so different tunes could be programmed to hit the little bells within. In London in the mid 1700’s a watchmaker miniaturised the design and built a watch with tiny bells and the drum programmed to play popular tunes of the day. A big breakthrough came in 1796 when a Geneva watch maker replaced the bells with a metallic comb of which the teeth were in orderly size order to create a musical scale. Ten years later the Swiss town of Sainte-Croix starting producing the first musical boxes and soon they represented one tenth of all Swiss exports. Over to Germany in 1870 and an inventor made his own musical box which used removable discs to play music. 101 years later; Fisher Price released their colourful record player in 1971 using the same
basic technology. It came with 5 plastic double sided discs with such catching tunes as Camp Town races and TwinkleTwinkle Little Star. Playing the same tunes repeatedly was fun for children but it must have driven parents to drink. Jump forward 45 years to the present day and the Fisher Price record player is making a comeback; an ingenious chap calling himself Fred27 on Instructables.com has posted a tutorial on how to use a 3D printer to create discs for the toy with tunes such as the Star Wars theme and of course Stairway to Heaven. In fact by using hi software any tune can now be transferred to a disc so parents’ sanity can be restored. Back again to 1877 when Charles Edison invented the Phonograph and modern music recording was born. The first phonograph ran by clockwork and differed in the important fact that live sound could be recorded and played back. Like musical boxes the recording was on a drum. Next was the Gramophone with the recorded sounds on discs or records as we call them now. 78 rpm became the standard speed and the name stuck.

job on 17th century statue
An amateur artist from Castilla y León has ‘restored’ a 17th century statue. SPAIN is gaining a reputation for art fraudsters botching imitations of famous works. Following in the footsteps of the infamous Ecce Homo fake, an amateur artist from Castilla y León has ‘restored’
a 17th century statue. To the dismay of historians, an unknown parishioner at the Chapel of Humiladero in Penarda de Bracamonte gave a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel a ‘makeover’ like no other. Heritage experts have reported the restoration as an abuse of protecting
Spain cultural heritage. However the Association of Conservationists and Restorers in Castilla y Leon has jumped to the defence of the sculptor. “Our work is very serious, professional and specific and not as easy as you might imagine,” María Luisa López, association secretary said.
Basque motorist breaks world drink-driving record
A 56-YEAR-OLD man from the Basque Country has broken the world record for drink-driving after he was found to have travelled 240 kilometres (150 miles) at nearly 10 times the legal limit. He was breathalysed by the Gendarmerie on the A-89 motorway linking Bourgogne and Perigueux, when they saw him parked on the hard shoulder in the town of Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle. Officers said he stank of alcohol and was too drunk even to complete the breathalyser test, so they took him to the nearest hospital. A blood test was carried out, and the reading showed 4.75 grams of alcohol per litre of blood, or 475 milligrams per 100 millilitres – nine-and-a-half times the legal limit for France or Spain. The driver admitted later that he had had no idea where he was driving to, nor how much alcohol he had drunk beforehand. He has provisionally been banned from driving for six months, but will appear in court in Libourne in southern France in October. Spain's alcohol limits are 0.05% – 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood or 0.25 milligrams per litre exhaled in a breathalyser test – dropping to 0.03%, or 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood and 0.15 milligrams per litre exhaled, for drivers of HGVs of 3.5 tonnes or more, of passenger vehicles with more than nine seats, or with less than two years' driving experience, and attracts a fine of between €500 and €1,000. More than double the limit means a six-month jail term, which is suspended if it is a first criminal offence, and a four-year ban. This is much lower than in the UK, where the breathalyser reading maximum is 0.35 milligrams per litre or 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. France's limits are the same as Spain's, but a reading of 0.08% or over is a criminal offence rather than, as in Spain, 0.12%. Anything over a standard glass of wine – 175ml – or a pint of beer, being two bottles (tercios) or glasses (cañas) is enough to put an average-sized male or female over the limit in Spain, and can take up to four hours after finishing to fully metabolise enough for the drinker to possibly be safe to drive. This means the offender is likely to have drunk the equivalent of 10 glasses or nearly two litres of wine, 10 pints of beer, or nearly half a litre of spirits. thinkspain

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT
Factors to Consider When Pricing a Home for Sale
In Spain, more than 50% of the homes which are placed on the market for sale are listed at a price higher than recommended, which in the long run harms the interests of the seller. This is according to Jesús Duque, Vice President of the real estate company, Alfa Inmobiliaria, following a study of their network of 140 agencies throughout the country, which showed that when a home is listed above its correct market price, then the property usually ends up being sold for a price less than its value. Since housing prices are constantly changing, the company offers its recommendations on how to correctly price a home for sale and summarises the aspects to consider when doing so, such as: studying the market situation at that particular time; looking at prices of similar housing for sale; the capacity for financing; the true condition of the property, and the impression the home, area and location portrays in terms of available services and amenities such as schools, shops, transport etc. However, El Mundo reported that there are also various factors that a potential buyer will not take into consideration when looking to make a purchase, such as the price the seller paid for the property in the past, the amount spent on it for improvements etc. or the emotional value of the property to the seller. Moreover, Alfa emphasises the necessity of putting
the right price on from the start, as they say that not doing so will only help sell neighbouring homes – since if they are cheaper, than any potential buyer will feel that they have found an interesting opportunity – and result in fewer viewings, as jumping from one price range to a higher one inevitably reduces the number of interested parties. According to Duque, “the most interested buyers usually appear within the first 30 days, and that is when the property must have the right price. Thereafter,
there is usually a significant drop in interest in the property which inevitably leads to lower prices, with the consequent loss of time and opportunities”. keyero

Completion Certificates for New Homes Fell by 8% Year-on-Year to May
According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, between January and May of this year, the construction of 17,171 new homes were completed in Spain, which represents a decline of 8% in comparison with the same period of the previous year when some 18,671 were completed. Thus, the number of completed homes returns to negative rates, after remaining positive up until April (2%), as in May alone they registered a decline of 36.7%. In 2015, the number of new homes completed in Spain accumulated eight consecutive years of declines and up until April this year a change in trend was indicated. Since the peak levels of 2007, when a total of 641,419 homes were constructed, the figure has fallen by 93% up to the end of 2015, with just 45,152 completed. Of the total number of homes completed up until May, some 16,910

El Mundo reported that, compared to a year earlier, housing construction by private developers fell by 8.4%, while in the case of public administrations it increased by 28%. Among the private initiative, some 10,160 of the properties related to corporations, with a year-on-year decline reaching 8%; 6,367 related to individuals and communities of owners (+4.9% y-o-y), and 219 to cooperatives (-67.5% y-o-y). In addition there were 164 completion certificates for other types of private developer projects. The Ministry’s data also shows that the liquidation value of the material execution of the works dropped by 14.7% up until may, to 2,102.1 million euros. kyero

Sector Indicators Highlight Spanish Housing Market Recovery
The Spanish real estate market recovery is continuing, little by little, according to all the sector indicators, with positive signs being registered in relation to prices, volume of real estate transactions, granting of mortgages, construction activity etc., although with some differences, according to the type of housing, geographical location and especially depending on whether the property is new or second hand. However, with regard to the price of housing in Spain, each data source paints a different picture of the situation. They all agree that the recovery is here, although their opinions differ with regard to the level of its intensity. According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, in the first quarter of the year, the price of free housing increased by 2.4% year-onyear, on average. By region, the increases were most significant in the Balearic Islands (9.6%), as well as in Catalonia and Madrid (above 4%). Housing over five years old registered the highest price increases, with average growth of 2.6%, compared with the slight increase of just 0.2% registered for houses built less than five years ago. Another source of data, the National Statistics Institute, offers a more optimistic picture of the Spanish real estate market. According to their statistics, in the first quarter of the year prices rose by 6.3%, which also represents an increase over the previous quarter, when prices rose by around 4%. Once again, second hand housing prices rose more than new housing (6.4% compared with 6.1%). Madrid was the region to register the greatest increase in housing prices, of 9.7%, followed by the Balearic Islands, with a rise of 8.8%,
while Castilla-La Mancha was the region which registered the lowest year-on-year increase, of 1.5%. Property appraisal company, Tinsa, a third source of real estate data which publishes monthly figures on price developments, suggests a more prudent price recovery. According to their calculations, in July the price of new and second hand finished housing registered a year-on-year increase of 0.3%, and an accumulated increase of 1.6% in the first seven months of the year, with the best figures being registered for the Balearic and Canary Islands where between January and July prices rose by 4.9% year-on-year. And, finally, Finanzas.com reported that, in accordance with data from the Sociedad de Tasación, which is focused only on new housing, the price per square metre, specifically of new housing located in Spain’s provincial capitals, showed an increase of 1.4% in the first half of the year and of 2.5% in the last twelve months. According to this data source, prices have now been recovering for three consecutive semesters. Route: Albir lighthouse Length of route: 5 KM (round trip) Duration: 1 h 30 m to 2 hours Maximum Altitude: 112 meters Accessibility: Paved route. Trekking Cycling. Wheelchairs. Difficulty: Easy Starting from the Information Point Albir (Alfas del Pi), walk up the street "Cami de la Cantera," which as its name suggests ends in an old quarry from which stone was quarried, but we cannot access this point and we must turn to the left at the streets "Syrio" and "Neptuno", until we reached a parking area where one of the entrances to the Natural Park can be located, the route to the Albir lighthouse. A few metres ahead there is a small recreation area. From here also the route 2 (yellow) starts that climbs to the crest of the Serra Gelada. "Caleta del Metge" and viewpoint We head up the paved route towards a tunnel in the mountain, but just before on the left hand side is a dirt track which descends to a small cove known as " Metge Cove, "and soon after there is a circular balcony with a magnificent view of the bay of Altea in the background the Penyal d'Ifach, surrounded by spectacular mountains. Arriving at the entrance of the tunnel, we can find another smaller viewing point. Ocher mines cove "La Mina" We continue to the lighthouse and after travelling 300 metres, we come across the path that slopes down gently to the mines of Phoenician origin and subsequent Roman exploitation, from which ocher was extracted to be used as a dye well into the century, when it fell into disuse after the introduction of other new substances for this activity. The "Boca of the Balena" About 500 metres after the tunnel we arrive at a bend in the road where to the right and above you can see in the shade of the mountain a natural hollow known as the "Mouth of The Balena "or" Cova de Bou ". Albir lighthouse at the end of the road we reach the El Faro del Albir where access is not permitted. Just before reaching the light house there is another viewing point to the right.

Hiking in Benidorm
Hiking Sierra Helada. To combine sea and mountains has never been easier. With 300 metre cliffs and more than 5,600 hectares, the natural park of Sierra Helada, the first marine and terrestrial park of the Valencia region and rises majestically behind the Mediterranean. The various organised routes will unlock the secrets of its coves, its fauna and flora, to visit the Albir lighthouse or head out to Punta del Cavallo. For the more adventurous, the crossing of the Serra Gelada is perfect for hiking, with a distance of 8 km and a duration of about 4 hours. By the way! Do not forget your camera because the views are breathtaking!
Blue Route in Sierra Helada Easy
Route. "Punta del Cavallo" or "Punta de la Escaleta" Length of route: 8,7 km (round trip), plus the 700 m of Ti Ximo Cove. Duration: From 2h to 2h 30 min Maximum Elevation: 75 m Accessibility: Road paved. Hiking. Cycling. Wheelchairs. Difficulty: Easy We start the tour at the end of the Levante beach, on the sloped road leading to the hotel Benikaktus on the street Alcalde Manuel Catalan Chana. Via the paved road, we will proceed straight up, passing to the left the route to the cross and proceed until we find a detour which descends to the viewing point of the Punta Llisera and Tio Ximo Cove. "Cala Tio Ximo": We find ourselves at a quiet Mediterranean cove relatively remote from the bustling beaches of the town centre. Along the cove we see observe the old ocher mines , where, not long ago, Tio Ximo worked with his donkeys. Watchtower: back on the road and to the right hand side access a road with restricted to motor vehicles where we will go to the Punta del Cavall, where there is a seventeenth century watchtower From here there are some of the best views of the cliffs of the Serra Gelada and very close to them,Illa Mitjana. Both here and the Punta Bombarda in Albir, are excellent vantage points, hence why in medieval times, the watchtowers were built to alert the public of the presence of pirates. http://en.visitbenidorm.es

Coastal Development Grows 33% in 24 Years
According to the conclusions of a report published by the Sustainability Observatory, some 27.8% of Spain’s 7,898 kilometres of coastline is already urbanised or transformed by man. In the 24 year period between 1987 and 2011, occupation of the first line of coast – 500 metres from the sea – has grown by 32.9%, at a rate of 22.7 km every 12 months. Continuing at this pace, in 251 years 100% of the coast will be urbanised. The Observatory’s team of investigators – which includes ecologists, engineers, economists, geographers and sociologists – based their research on data from the National Geographic Institute, which periodically updates the information on coastal occupation with satellite photographs from within a European project. The Mediterranean and South
Atlantic coastal areas are the most affected, with 35.2% (1,351 km) of their 3,829 kilometres of coastline already occupied artificially, either by houses, shopping areas, infrastructures or mining. In the case of the North Atlantic and Cantabrian coast, the level of occupation was 21.6% in 2011, while in the Canary Islands it stood at 19.7%. However, between 1987 and 2011 the pace of urbanisation on these islands has been the highest, with the volume of kilometres occupied increasing by 42.6% in those 24 years. Málaga is the province which ranks highest for coastal transformation in Spain, with 81% of its first line already developed, followed by Valencia, with 67% already artificially transformed.

RemitEx: The Exhibition
Alqueria was the scene of frantic endeavour, marquees were being erected, streets steam-cleaned, litter collected and houses painted. Everyone in the Village was putting their ‘shoulders to the grindstone’ for the mutual good of the Republic. Some people even worked three of four hours a week, it was humbling to watch. Manuela wiped a tear from her eye as she surveyed the exertions of her fellow countrymen. RemitEx the exhibition, designed to restore confidence in Remitroot and its associated products after the evil Rodriquez had all but destroyed the goodwill built up over two millennia. Tents had been erected to demonstrate its important uses and downplay the side-effects. These included severe and lifelong addiction, swelling of the male organ, and a strange fungal foot-rot that turns the toes bright green and smells like the putrefying carcass of a estuarine crocodile. ‘Remitroot the alcohol’ naturally had the biggest tent. The whisky, rum, wine and beer derived from the Root were potent beverages and had enhanced effects on those whose mental state was in any way impaired. This guaranteed that the population of Alqueria lived their daily lives in a perpetual state of intoxication. ‘Remitroot the aphrodisiac’ was a sound proofed, pink quilted affair organised, operated and jealously guarded by the lovely
Manuela. ‘Remitroot the corrosion retardant’ This was a small not very interesting tent but highly lucrative, it was shared by ‘Remitroot the pipe lagger’. Customers to this venue would be directed to the first two tents and therefore be in no fit state to question inflated prices and vague delivery promises. Potential customers for all Remitroot products were promised free beer and dancing girls. Came the opening day of RemitEx and, rather unusually for Alqueria it went like a piece of Swiss clockwork. The beverage tent soon needed to send for resupply and the samples, free at first attracted rising prices proportional to the degree of intoxication of the would be customers. A veil should be perhaps drawn over the activities in ‘Remitroot the aphrodisiac’ tent, suffices to say those leaving were but a shadow of themselves on entering. Come the evening and fights had broken out in every venue. An alcohol induced free for all was in full swing in the beverage tent while a fist fight among those waiting to enter the aphrodisiac tent started when drunken queue jumpers tried to push themselves in. Sheer boredom in the anti-corrosion tent led to a mêlée of biting and kicking which seemed a more exciting alternative to the world of rust retardants. Manuela was well pleased. Remitroot once more took its rightful place as the world’s leading product offering immediate and intense intoxication, disturbing mind alteration and stimulation a stud stallion would be proud of. Alqueria was once more a going concern.
Guapo
We were in the Cafetería at Hospital Inmaculada looking at the cooked food. The doyen of dinner serving appeared; Maria, an attractive toffee brown lady with a well-built figure and a fully developed sense of humour. The following conversation is a hopscotch of English and Spanish: Pete, English: ‘What’s that?’ Me, English: ‘Magra.’ Pete, English: ‘What’s magra?’ Me, English: It’s chopped up meat in sauce. You like magra,’ I added firmly. Pete, English: Pointing to another dish. ‘What’s that?’ It looked like a sort of bean stew. But I asked, in Spanish: ‘What’s that?’ Maria, Spanish: Estofado de calabacin y alubias.’ I decided it prudent to precis the description for Pete, so I answered in English: Bean stew.’ Pete’s mind was made up. In English with added pointing he said ‘I’ll have that (bean stew) and that (magra) Maria proceeded to dollop a hefty portion of bean stew onto a plate. ‘No, no, no!’ Pete protested. Maria, Spanish: ‘You don’t want estofado?’The plate hovered in noman’s land between us. Me, English: ‘Don’t you want stew?’ Pete, English: No Yes..No…Well, not that much. Tell her to tip come back.’ Maria, who must have a reasonable understanding of English due to the number she sees on a daily basis, replied in Spanish: I can’t do that. Once it is served I can’t put it back.’ She passed the plate to Pete, who immediately passed it to me as though it were a grenade with the pin pulled. I plonked it firmly on his tray. Pete, English, picking up the offending plate: ‘I don’t want all of it. Just some

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk of it’ Me, English and a little terse: ‘You can leave what you can’t eat.’ I retrieved the plate and put it down on his tray with firm determination. By this time Maria had entered into the spirit of the thing, and was smiling in a manner that would make even Scrooge lighten up a bit. Me, Spanish: ‘Men! Always creating problems!’ Maria, Spanish: ‘Men are always one big problem in all the world!’ We both laughed at our common understanding. The magra was a re-run of the bean stew scenario; Maria dished, I took control of the filled plate, complete with the command that he didn’t need to eat all of it. As we paid and left, I offered, in Spanish: ‘Men! Can’t live with them, can’t live without them!’ Maria, who was by this time in full-on laughter, agreed, but added, in Spanish: ‘But he is so guapo!’ ‘What did she say?’ Pete enquired urgently on the way to our table. ‘She said you were good-looking.’ Pete’s head promptly swelled to the size of a bucket, and he ate almost all of his dinner!

The FAST2016 Responders have had another busy month, being on call 24 hours a day and training every Tuesday and extra training provided by Debbie on Friday. During the past few weeks, we have recruited additional volunteers who will receive guidance and training from our Training Team to become fully qualified and accredited FAST2016 Responders on Camposol. Unfortunately, due to the shortage of FAST2016 Responders, there have been a few days over the last few months where our service has been suspended. There is a pre-recorded message on the emergency number for such an occasion. However, we are hoping that full cover will imminently be resumed as soon as our new recruits are fully trained and accredited by Murcia Health Authority. We should also like to welcome back Carl, Mandy and Suzanne to FAST2016; it is always nice to welcome old friends back to our team. FAST 2016 are planning a "Health Awareness Day" on Saturday 24th September at Mariano’s on A Sector; everyone is welcome. More details will be posted on our web page or from the bookstall on the Friday Market on B sector. This initiative may be expanded to get the health awareness message across to various groups for the benefit of the community of Camposol. More information on our web page. You may have noticed that we have changed the colour of our tops since we reformed in June, but rest assured that you will still receive the same assistance from all the Responders and Supporters as previously. Trips The coach trip to Alicante is now fully booked thanks to Sue and Jane. The next trip will be an early Christmas shopping trip to Benidorm on Wednesday 16th November, tickets on sale outside Euronics on a Friday at €15. Enjoy a day at your leisure, shopping in the market/site seeing/chilling. The day is yours to do with as you wish. On Tuesday 13th December there will be the “Ultimate Christmas Shopping Extravaganza!” For €20 per person, there will be three trips in one:- Licor43 Experience, Free afternoon to shop at La Zenia Boulevard, Visit to Iceland at San Javier Planning is underway for the Christmas Fayre at Mariano's on Saturday 29th October. There will be the normal traders, the renowned cake stall and lots more! Plus the FAST2016 raffle with fabulous prizes on offer will be drawn. Please do not forget that FAST2016 is always looking for new Responders to help provide the continuity of this wonderful service to the residents of Camposol. If you would like to join our friendly team and, at the same time, receive training so you can provide excellent lifesaving skills if required, then please contact us at our recruitment email address provided below. Regular Tuesday training sessions will recommence at the beginning of September. All the information is on our web page, www.FAST2016.org. F O K TAL N W O T E H T Dream job alert: this company will pay you to drink gin If there’s two things we love in life (other than, you know, our friends and family), it’s travelling to new places, and drinking gin. Not necessarily in that order. Which is why our ears pricked up when we heard that ILoveGin.com are searching to a ‘gintern’ to do just that. The monthly G&T club need someone to help them track down to a whole new world of tongue-titillating gins, tonics and tinctures. Writing on their website, they explain that they’re on the hunt for an “enthusiastic gin-loving” individual (no kidding), who will be more than happy to while away their time “ trying new gins, new mixers, finding new brands to work with, visiting distilleries, pairing gins and “ginspiring” us with their new-found knowledge”. Which, obviously, sounds amazing. Even better, however, is the fact that the lucky gintern

will get to travel around the UK and Europe to attend launch events, meet with master distillers, and sample innovative new versions of mother’s ruin. “One day you might be up in Edinburgh tasting a new craft gin, the next going to a launch event in London for a new tonic water,” they explain. As if all that free booze weren’t incentive enough, the company is also offering a competitive intern salary, as well as the opportunity to set your own hours – and even work from home, if that’s what you’d prefer. You can also expect plenty of goodies delivered straight to your doorstep every month, and, if you prove to be a ginspirational employee, they may even offer you a full-time position. If you’re thinking of applying for this role, there are, of course, a few basic must-have requirements. You must be over the age of 18, for obvious reasons, and you also need to hold a full driver’s license, and live in the UK. Oh, and you need to love gin… but surely that goes
without saying? If this news psyched you up enough to quit your current job and throw caution to the wind, you can find the full job description and application form at stylist.co.uk. Bringing a pet to Spain
To advertise here call : 950 121 936
There are certain Spanish rules for relocating pets to Spain, particularly proving they are healthy and are transported appropriately when travelling to Spain. Pets are welcome in Spain but there are strict Spanish regulations relating to bringing pets into the country. If you plan to take a pet to Spain, it's important to check the latest regulations. Make sure that you have the correct papers, not only for Spain, but for all the countries you will pass through to reach Spain. Be aware that regulations differ depending on the country you are travelling from. Here is the general information you will need when you decide to move to Spain with your pet. Pet immigration rules for Spain Your pet must have an ISO pet microchip inserted, and be vaccinated for rabies and various other diseases at least 21 days prior to travel and not more than one year prior to travel. If your animal was vaccinated before it was fitted with a microchip, it will have to be vaccinated again after the microchip is inserted. If your pet's microchip is not ISO 11784/11785 compliant, you will have to bring your own microchip scanner. A USDA (or CFIA) accredited veterinarian must then complete the bi-lingual Annex II for Spain** for endorsement by the USDA or CFIA if travelling from the United States or Canada. If travelling from another country, the Governing Authority should endorse the form for you. Pets entering Spain from a country with a high incidence of rabies, must have a Blood Titer Test one month after vaccination and three months prior to departure. Restrictions Unvaccinated pets (dogs and cats only) less than three months old may enter an EU country, but there are additional regulations that must be met. Certain aggressive breeds of dogs are prohibited from entry. All other pets (birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals such as rodents and rabbits) are not subject to the regulations on the anti-rabies vaccination but may have to meet other requirements as to a limit on the number of animals and a certificate to accompany them with respect to other diseases. Pet owners are strongly advised to seek further information from the
relevant authority of their country and/or that of the destination country. Airline pet container requirements The airline will normally insist that you acquire a special travelling container for the animal that is ventilated and allows the animal room to move and lie down. Label your pet's kennel carefully and prominently so that it won't get lost during the transit. Ensure that your pet has adequate food and water for the journey. The rules regarding approved types of containers for cats, dogs, ferrets and birds flying in the cabin and as cargo were created by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and for the most part have been accepted by the world's airlines. You should read the IATA requirements before
you travel with your pet abroad. Pets in the cabin On flights of less than ten hours, many airlines will allow small cats or dogs to be taken with the passenger in the cabin (except travel to the UK and Hong Kong). Generally, the airline will only allow one pet per passenger and a maximum of two pets per cabin. The container for the pet must fit under the seat in front of you and must have a waterproof bottom and adequate ventilation. The Sherpa, Bergan and SturdiBag pet carriers are all airline compliant as long as the carrier is the proper size for your pet. If you are purchasing a container, make sure that it meets these minimum requirements: The container must be large enough for the animal(s) to stand, turn around, and lie down. The kennel must be made of a sturdy plastic. he container must have a secure, spring loaded, all around locking system with the pins extending beyond the horizontal extrusions above and
below the door. Although this is not an IATA requirement, many airlines are now requiring steel crate hardware instead of plastic fasteners. We would recommend that you use this hardware on your pet's crate to be sure there will be no problems. Both water and food bowls must be attached to the inside of the front door and be refillable from the outside of the container without opening the door. The container must have ventilation on all sides for international travel and three sides minimum for domestic travel. The container must have LIVE ANIMAL stickers on the top and sides in letters at least one inch tall. NO WHEELS. If the container has wheels, they should be removed or taped securely so that the kennel cannot roll. The container must be identified with your pet's name and owner's contact information. The best way to do this is to attach your pet's information to the outside of the crate. Make sure to attach an extra copy of your pet's health certificate to the container. Pet relocation to Spain EU pet passports European Union pet owners are now required to have pet passports when travelling with their animals. The passports, which are required before allowing an animal entry into an EU member state, are to include the pet's microchip or tattoo number for identification, as well as other data such as records of all vaccinations and clinical examinations. When travelling, the pet owner must ensure that the rabies vaccination in the passport is valid or else renew the pet's vaccination. One aim of the European Pet Travel Scheme, which covers cats, dogs and even ferrets, rabbits and rodents, is to provide proof that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies, with the passport also setting out details of the pet's tick and tapeworm treatment. The EU Pet Passport contains the following information: Name and address of animal owner Description of the animal (breed, sex, age, color) Number of microchip Date of the rabies vaccination, period of validity of the vaccination, type of vaccine, name of manufacturer and production number Address and signature of the veterinarian

challenge, visualize roots extending from your body deep into the earth. This simple exercise will help you feel grounded and connected with nature. Plan small Trips into nature don’t always have to be big ones. If possible, plan small weekly trips that easily fit into your schedule. Perhaps it’s as simple as a barefoot beach walk, or a jog through your favourite park. Make it a ritual that’s exciting and easy. Knowing you have this weekly practice will begin building an innate sense that you are connected with the earth.
reconnect with nature
Plan big Every now and then it’s exciting to really get out there. Plan a major trip once or twice a year to a natural location of your choosing. Perhaps it’s a national park, or simply a road trip through a beautiful area. While important to have something to look forward to, the effort and planning involved in such a trip can also have a profound impact on your day-to-day outlook. Paul O’Grady? Lily Savage? O’Grady takes us back to life in the seventies and gives us a glimpse of his life from the age of 18. He presents us with a vivid and usually a sordid and seedy picture of the Birkenhead club scene followed by the equally sordid London scene, dens of inequity for a troubled soul whose lifelong ambition seems to be to get inebriated every night and wake up with a stinking hangover. Vanity and hedonistic pleasure dominated his life. At 18 he had to be “friggin’ gorgeous” dolled up in the tightest of garments to accentuate his sexuality and desirability before he could storm the club scene. His mother called it “tomcatting” and the expression “the devil rides out” is one of the phrases his mother used for his clubbing, dressed up to the eyeballs and on the pull! Her prejudice was more evident when she called it “debauchery “ and then lashed out at him with: “You fornicating, no-good, dirty big who-er.” Don’t get the wrong impression. His mother loved him BUT also worried about him always getting into trouble, especially with the police. At times the author allows us to see a vulnerable child, unsure of himself, immature and unable to face up to any kind of responsibilities. He was deeply affected by his father’s sudden death and made to feel guilty because of his troubled sexuality that created un-necessary tensions in the family. Mother had just had a near fatal heart-attack and was not expected to survive. Father was so shocked that HE then had an instantaneous heart attack and died immediately afterwards. Mother was “numb with shock” and far too ill to be allowed to bury her own husband. His father’s death left a “raw gaping wound”

The Devil Rides Out. Paul O’Grady.
and his guilt at causing his death was “growing heavier” as he quietly mourned the loss of his father’s “reassuring presence.” Surprisingly for me, he had some girlfriends and seemed like any other heterosexual male. He slept with Diane who was one of his girlfriends who became pregnant with Paul’s daughter. In between this “hysterical queen” act there was a parent trying to establish itself. At 18, Paul was too immature and unable to face up to any responsibilities and he admitted that his blood ran cold when he saw the baby. “Having sowed my wild oats I’d prayed for crop failure.” He was “going nowhere fast” or crudely put: “ up shit creek without a paddle.” Another big surprise was to agree to an arranged marriage to a lesbian. On paper this lasted 28 years. Very strange. The other side you don’t hear about concerns the physical graft, caring for the disabled and the most vulnerable when he worked for Camden Social Services or at the Convalescent Home and School. Stephen was one of his favourites at the home. He was 12 and had muscular dystrophy. He would bellow “Move your arse, spaz.” His head shook like a “bobble toy” but he was as mischievous and ruthless as the others in his abuse and insults. Also we find out about Moya with Down’s syndrome who would “drop her drawers” indiscriminately to Paul’s delight and to everyone else’s horror! Fraudster Robin was a conman “the type who would charm a maggot off a corpse.” Then we had Shirley, an escort girl who was going to see her Saudi Prince Abdul to engage in a bit of sexual fantasy. O’Grady describes her as “no clumsy slapper” but as a “seasoned pro.” The Hilton was where the illicit sex took place. O’Grady’s job was the same as a pimp but an upmarket one. His tip was £200. “The wages of sin weren’t death. Sin
was extremely well paid!” As an interesting diversion we hear about the author’s visit to East Berlin, Poland and Auschwitz with sobering r e c o l l e c t i o n. This was riveting. In Manila we are exposed to abject poverty and sexual trafficking that appalled the writer. It was a “dirty, sprawling, poverty-stricken metropolis” with a booming sex trade, reeking of exploitation. The desire to perform on stage seemed to be a niggling need throughout this period of life and his ambition is realised when he returns to London, to the Elephant and Castle the birthplace of Lily Savage. He called it a “ persistent theatrical itch.” He longed for the “mayhem at the circus” a combination of the Weimar Berlin cabaret, the vaudeville, burlesque but also something that was “quintessentially” British. To continue this interesting saga about O’Grady’s phoenix you will have to read the third volume and discover the delights of Lily Savage for yourself. Bantam Press:

7th SUMMER CUP 2016
Secretary/Captain Challenge – Combined Stableford FONT DEL LLOP GOLF RESORT 5th August 2016
This is the oldest golf tournament at Font del Llop Golf Resort, not my words but those of the Alberto Iglesias - General Director, and it is one that attracts Golf Societies from the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. This year there were 40 Societies competing for the Summer Cup Trophy and a table full of prizes for the event which is organised by The Vega Baja Premier Golf League. Despite the recent prolonged heat wave there was a wind that tested the players, but no searing sun for the Costa’s hardy golfers. This was a ‘shot gun’ start which ensures all the players get in around the same time for the presentation meal. But to ensure they did not suffer too much on the course a “picnic” with a bottle of water, was taken out to them. As always it was a close fought event and only 10 points covered the top six places. The results were as follows: 1st: THE MED BAR G. S.Andy Drinkall & Ray Muttock 73 points (2 x Dunlop Tour Flight Bags) 2nd: ELITE G.S. Jerry Coneybeare & Doug Spiring

It was back to our “Home” on another extremely hot Summer’s day, temperatures hit a high of 36 degrees and plenty of water was the order of the day, a little tip drink at least a half litre of water before you go and play as it is difficult the rehydrate quickly when playing. Considering it is August and the high temperatures the turnout was very good, thankfully a breeze came up in the afternoon to ease the player’s game. Yet another well done to Vistabella green staff as the course and in particular the greens is in really good condition considering the heat wave

early bale strike helps real madrid racist chanting in spain once again
Gareth Bale scored twice to help Real Madrid start the Spanish league with a 3-0 victory at Real Sociedad, while Atletico Madrid was held 1-1 after conceding a last-gasp goal to Alaves on Sunday. Both title hopefuls from the capital outplayed their opponents. The difference was that Madrid proved more ruthless, and that was largely thanks to Bale. Bale, who guided Wales to the semifinals of the European Championship in July, led a Madrid side that was on the road for its Liga opener without Cristiano Ronaldo and several other firstchoice players. His second-minute header set Madrid on its way to a comfortable win that youngster Marco Asensio put beyond doubt with his second goal in as many matches for the reigning European champions. Bale wrapped up his brace by scoring in the closing seconds of the one-sided game at Anoeta Stadium. “[Bale] began in the best way possible, by quickly scoring a goal,” Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane said. “He has said that this season is important for him and he is showing it. We needed to begin the league well.” Barcelona also won its seasonopener, a 6-2 rout of Real Betis on Saturday, but Atletico fell two
points behind the powerhouses right out of the gate of what it hopes to make a three-way championship race for a fourth straight year. Diego Simeone’s side dominated Alaves, hitting the woodwork twice, and peppering the visitors’ goalmouth with a barrage of shots that only increased as the match went on. Kevin Gameiro appeared to have secured the win in his debut for Atletico after he converted a stoppage-time penalty, which was earned by Fernando Torres when he was fouled by Victor Laguardia. But Alaves’ Manu Garcia stunned Atletico with a long-distance strike seconds before the whistle in just his team’s second venture forward. “It leaves a sour taste in my mouth because we had it won,” Simeone said. “But that’s football. You win by scoring goals, and we couldn’t convert.”
Athletic Bilbao has condemned racist abuse directed at their Spanish striker Inaki Williams during their La Liga opener at Sporting Gijon on Sunday. The 22-year-old Williams, born in Bilbao to a Ghanaian father and Liberian mother, was targeted by a section of Sporting fans during Athletic’s 2-1 defeat at El Molinon stadium. Midway through the first half, referee Carlos Clos Gomez halted the game for one minute following those abusive chants aimed at Williams. Athletic said on their website: “Worse than the result has been the fact that the referee has had to halt the game during the first half after insults and racist chants directed at Inaki Williams.” The referee wrote in his report: “At 22 minutes the game was stopped for one minute due to one stand of the stadium imitating monkey sounds directed at player number 11, Inaki Williams Arthur.” An announcement was made over the PA system to remind fans that any form of racism was not tolerated and Sporting players intervened to try to silence their fans before the game resumed with no further incidents. Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde was
disappointed with the incident and said after the game as quoted in Marca: “I consider it an isolated case and not something their whole fan section took part in.” The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary code prohibits chants that “incite violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sports.” Sporting were already punished for a similar incident in September 2008 and were fined €3,000 by the RFEF for racist and abusive chants directed at then-Getafe winger Joffre Guerron. Williams scored Athletic’s only goal of the game as a total of 25,340 spectators turned out to watch Sporting’s league opener, which saw the home side claim its first win against the Bilbao outfit in 25 years. Williams, who made his La Liga debut in December 2014, started in 21 league games for Athletic last season, scoring eight goals and setting up three more. His solid performances in the 2015-16 campaign earned him his first cap with Spain in May in an international friendly defeat of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Espn.com
