Brexit: Rajoy tells Theresa May 'British expats can rest easy'
SPAIN'S acting president Mariano Rajoy will back British prime minister Theresa May if Scotland attempts to hold a second independence referendum, and UK foreign minister Boris Johnson has insisted nothing will change concerning Gibraltar's sovereignty once Brexit goes ahead. May and Rajoy met on Thursday at the Moncloa Palace, Spain's answer to the White House and 10 Downing Street, and details of their talks are now starting to come to light. It was Conservative leader Mrs May's first visit to Spain since she became prime minister after David Cameron, for whom she was Home Secretary, resigned in late June after his attempts to please everyone by calling a referendum on Britain's EU membership turned out to please nobody. Whilst 51.9% of those who voted – 37% of adult British citizens, which included 'passing through' and resident Commonwealth nationals but barred Brits who had been living outside the UK more than 15 years – celebrated the triumph of the Brexit vote, both Brexiteers and 'Bremainers' are becoming increasingly annoyed about the lack of any concrete plan after triggering Article 50, and the absence of any information about the promised lucrative worldwide trade agreements to be put in place to replace the 27-strong open market in Europe. And this closed-door policy was reflected in May's and Rajoy's meeting, since reporters were not given the chance to ask questions or given a debrief afterwards. The only information gained by the Spanish media has been through their government website, which says Rajoy listened to May's plans for taking Brexit forward and pledged to her to protect the interests of the Spanish people and Spanish companies. 'British expats and tourists can rest easy' Crucially, Rajoy mentioned British citizens living in Spain, which the Conservatives have not done – an issue which is causing serious unrest among expats, some of whom have children born in Spain or who, themselves, have never lived in the UK; many of whom work, or are retired and rely on their status as EU citizens for healthcare and unconditional
residence. In fact, in the 170 queries Labour put forward to the Conservatives about Brexit this week, only one sentence in one of the questions referred to British expats in Europe at the same time as mentioning European expats in the UK, whilst the Conservatives have not even raised the matter. Rajoy's words to May, however, will be music to British expats' ears: “The British people living in Spain, the millions of British tourists who visit us every year, and the British companies based on Spanish territory can rest easy,” the PP leader assured. We're so sorry, Scotland Scotland will not get any backing from Rajoy, though, as he made clear to Theresa May – having already said as such during the European Parliamentary meeting which Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon attended. Although the PP leader categorically denies his stance has anything to do with Catalunya, it is not difficult to draw comparisons, with Spain's northeastern region having gone as far as to announce a referendum on secession before next September with or without the blessing of the Moncloa. Every single constituency in Scotland voted, in the majority, to remain in the EU, as was the case with London, Brighton, Norwich, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool, Cambridge and three-quarters of Northern Ireland, plus 95% of voters in Gibraltar, and an overwhelming majority of still-eligible voters living in the EU – with an equally overwhelming majority of those denied a vote due to the '15-year rule' having expressed their desire to remain - meaning unlike after a general election, the voters who 'lost' are not prepared to take their fate lying down. In fact, one of the unanswered questions is what will happen to the Northern Ireland-Republic of Ireland border. Opening the border was key in the peace agreement which saw the end of decades of IRA bombings, but this will mean the UK still has a land border with the EU and its desire to 'control immigration', even at the expense of the single market, could be very difficult. And border issues may affect Gibraltar, where numerous Spaniards living in the Andalucía province
Luxury, Long Haul and Independent Travel Specialists
of Cádiz commute every day. Britain to 'remain implacable' over Gibraltar's sovereignty, says Johnson With the current PP government determined the Rock should be Spanish, and the Gibraltarians wanting to remain British, it will be the workers who are worst-affected in the event of a political battle of wits. The subject did not arise during May's and Rajoy's meeting, according to diplomatic sources, who insisted it was a 'bilateral issue' which 'had nothing to do with the UK's Brexit negotiations with the EU'. But UK foreign minister Boris Johnson – the main 'official' voice of the 'Leave' campaign, second only to former UKIP minister Nigel Farage whose own campaign was independent – has made it clear what the UK's stance over the Rock will be. No changes to British sovereignty of the colony will arise as a result of Brexit, Johnson stated in a speech before the foreign affairs commission in the House of Commons, and the British government will remain 'implacable' in its opposition to any attempts by Spain to alter the status quo. “We've been very clear on this. We don't see any reason whatsoever to change Gibraltar's sovereignty,” Johnson stated, adding that he had already made this patent to his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel García-Margallo. Margallo famously said, as British citizens and residents awoke to find they were going to leave the EU, that an 'opportunity for Spain' which had 'not existed since the year 1713' had arisen to 'take back control' of the colony through a co-sovereignty agreement. Johnson stressed that the two countries' 'differences of opinion' on the subject 'did not mean the UK had a troubled relationship with Madrid'. Rajoy echoed this to May, stressing that he wanted to maintain the 'close relationship and future friendship' between Spain and Britain, and between the UK and the EU. But he reiterated his disappointment and sadness at the Brexit vote prospering, a view Spanish politicians share almost unanimously. thinkspain

About 50 etchings were found in the
Basque town of Lekeitio. They include horses, bison, goats and - in a radical departure from previously discovered Palaeolithic art in the Biscay province - two lions. Some depictions are also much bigger than those found previously - with one horse about 150cm (4ft 11in) long. "It is a wonder, a treasure of humanity," senior Biscay official Unai Rementeria

Together with two side panels, the depictions comprise some 30 animals along with forms comprising semi-circles and lines - including some "identical" to forms found in the French
The cave will not be opened to the public, both due to its inaccessibility and because of the need to preserve the paintings - but authorities say they will use technology to give the public as good a view of the new finds as possible. Experts will discuss the finds at a special congress at the end of the month. BBC

Thousands march in Europe against EU-Canada trade deal Thousands of people demonstrated Saturday in France, Spain and Poland against a EU-Canada free trade deal and a far more ambitious agreement with the United States. Activists charge that the Canada deal will set a dangerous precedent and open the way for a similar but far more sweeping pact with Washington, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). TTIP has already run into trouble, with the EU saying it will not be agreed before President Barack Obama leaves office in January, as was initially planned. "The European governments must today hear the refusal of the their people," said Attac, an international movement seeking alternatives in the globalisation process, and one of the main organisers of the protest. In France, about 1,200 people marched in Paris, according to the police, but the organisers put the number at 5,000. There were also protests in Lyon and Toulouse. The EU-Canada pact has already run into trouble with lawmakers in the small Belgian region of Wallonia on Friday voting to block it. The parliament vote in the Frenchspeaking part of southern Belgium threatens to derail the long-delayed signing by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the pact, known as CETA, in Brussels later this month. In order to be signed by Trudeau at
the EU-Canada summit on October 27, the deal must first be backed by all 28 EU member states at a trade ministers' meeting on Tuesday. CETA was formally concluded in 2014 after five years of talks. Except for a few sensitive agricultural products, CETA abolishes virtually all tariffs between Canada and the EU. Acquiescing to a European demand, Canada has agreed to substantially open up its public procurement to EU companies, which until now were basically barred from such contracts. Its backers say the deal will boost trade in goods and services between Europe and Canada by more than 20 percent, and total EU GDP by about 12 billion euros ($13.4 billion) per year. But it is opposed by a wide array of groups, who say it is a test model to push through the even more controversial EU-US trade deal, still in negotiation. "These accords use growth to put into question social and environmental norms to help benefit multinationals," said French unionist Murielle Guilbert. Around 1,000 also people marched in Warsaw and a few hundred in Krakow. "We don't want TTIP, CETA," they chanted. "Human souls first and profits later," they shouted. Several thousands marched in the Spanish capital Madrid. Many shouted: "No to poverty, inequality and to TTIP." http://www.expatica.com

Dozens of Catalan cities refuse to celebrate Spain’s national day
Many Catalans associate the holiday with the Franco regime. DOZENS of towns and cities in Catalan refused to celebrate or even recognise Spain’s national holiday yesterday. Some 40 municipalities across the region ignored court orders to close for the day to mark Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas in 1492. Many Catalans associate the holiday with the millions of indigenous Americans who died as a result of the explorer’s discovery and the Franco regime that brutally repressed the region. Deputy mayor of Badalona
Josep Tellez said ‘there’s nothing to celebrate’ as he tore up a judge’s decree in front of city hall. Xavier Garcia Albiol, regional president of the Popular P a r t y , criticized municipalities’ ‘brazen and dis ob e die nt attitude’. He said: “There should be some sort of reaction from the justice because if not we’re going to end up turning this country into a jungle.” Left-wing lawmakers proposed taking down a statue of Columbus in Barcelona and banning the holiday last month. They said: “The celebration of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America represents the intolerable act of the glorification of colonialism and imperialism.” http://www.expatica.com

Gerard Pique wants to be president
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes he can take the unusual route into club politics rather than management when his playing career comes to an end by becoming Barça president. The Catalan giants are run by a president voted for by the club's near 150,000 members with mandates lasting up to six years. "I want to be president of Barça. It is the step I would like to take when I retire. I don't see myself as a coach, I don't think I would enjoy it that much," Pique told Catalan TV station TV3. "I could do very well for this club as president because it is my passion," he said. Pique, 29, announced his decision to retire from international football after the 2018 World Cup earlier this week due to the latest in a series of attacks on his commitment to play for Spain. During Spain's 2-0 win at Albania on Tuesday was falsely accused
of cutting the colours of the Spanish flag off his long-sleeved shirt as the colours appeared only on the short-sleeved version of the shirt. Pique has also been consistently jeered by Spain fans when playing for the national team, in part due to his public barbs at Real Madrid and for his outspoken support for a referendum on Catalan independence. "I have positioned myself on the right to decide and I continue to believe that. In a democratic country like Spain, the right (for the people) to decide is the most democratic thing there is." However, Pique has never explicitly stated he would vote for independence in the case of a referendum. "If you choose one side or the other you get scolded. There is no doubt about that. I haven't chosen and I have been scolded. Imagine if I had." thelocal
Spanish police inspectors to be trained by Catholic university
Academy cuts 28-year link with Salamanca University after accepting cheaper bid. Aspiring police inspectors with the Spanish National Police will be trained by a private Catholic university, ending a 28-year association with the secular Salamanca University. Under the Spanish police system, an inspector is an executive rank below that of Chief Inspector. Sources at the Ávila police academy, where the trainees will now be lectured by professors from the Catholic University of Ávila (UCAV), said that the move was financially motivated. Abortion, euthanasia and the Gag Law will never be the same when explained by a professor at a Catholic university “It was the cheapest offer,” said a source. The UCAV has reportedly lowered the cost of the service from the €200,000 charged by Salamanca University to €100,000, meaning that the state will save €18 on each hourlong class. The Interior Ministry said it had “no involvement” in this recent agreement. Nobody seems to want to take responsibility for a decision that has drawn criticism in the world of academia, because there is more than just money at stake. “Abortion, euthanasia and the socalled Gag Law will never be the same when explained by a professor from a public university as by one from a private, Catholic university whose ultimate boss is the bishop,” said one professor of criminal law from Salamanca University who has taught at the police academy. Although acting Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz is known to have a good personal relationship with the bishop of Ávila, Jesús García Burillo – who is also the Grand Chancellor of UCAV – the ministry denies any involvement in the deal, and says the decision was delegated to the National Police General Directorate. The latter
says that a task force was appointed to sift through the offers made by the various bidding universities. “They all have the same technical conditions, but given a maximum cost per class of €100 an hour, Salamanca offered €98, Seville University offered €95 and UCAV said it would teach for €80 an hour.” Nobody at UCAV could be reached for comment, while the bishop himself replied: “The most opportune thing for you to do is to address the police academy.” The police academy had maintained an agreement with Salamanca University for 28 years, but new legislation forced the state to put the contract up for tender four years ago. Until now, Salamanca had won every bid. But this year, Ávila won out. Economic criteria have trumped academic prestige and a decades-long collaboration Daniel Hernández Ruipérez, President Salamanca University The three-member task force charged with choosing the contract – representing the National Police, the Tax Agency and the State’s legal counsel – does not take into account whether a bidding university is secular or religious, or whether it is private or public. “Economic criteria have trumped academic prestige and a decades-long collaboration,” said Daniel Hernández Ruipérez, president of Salamanca University, who is taking the case to court. The dean of the Law School, Ricardo Rivero, is planning to appeal the decision to switch universities based on the winner’s “lack of technical solvency.” The National Police General Directorate promises to “analyze it rigorously.” Founded in 1134, Salamanca University is Spain’s oldest and Europe’s third oldest continuously operating university. elpais

Surprising tricks to give you body confidence
Feel better about your body at every age and life stage with our smart tips
Stand up straight The quickest way to boost your inner confidence is to change the way you sit, stand or walk. 'Looking confident means feeling more confident and the reverse is true, so self-diminishing behaviours like hugging your torso or standing with your legs crossed at the ankles will send signals to your subconscious that you are somehow under attack,' says psychologist Judi James, author of Being Confident(Vermillion, £12.99 from Amazon). 'Pull up full height, roll your shoulders back and down and splay your feet slightly. When you sit place your elbows on the arms of the chair and do smile.' Make gratitude your attitude There are lots of studies showing the link between gratitude and wellbeing. So, make time to appreciate and reward your body for the amazing job it does. For example, you may not like your flabby tummy, but feel grateful for the job your body did carrying your children when you were pregnant. To continue being positive about your shape (or any other aspect of your life), why not start a gratitude journal? Every day, write down your thoughts about each part of your body and why you appreciate it. Give off beautiful vibes Whatever your life stage and body shape, watch out for the messages you're unconsciously giving to others. 'We tell other people and ourselves how good we look or not,' says Judi. After all, you could have a body like Gisele but any shape can appear unattractive if low self-esteem comes through in your body language. 'It's the way you carry yourself that counts,' says Judi. 'Never criticise your shape out loud and don't make comparisons.' Remember, no one else is 100% body confident either 'When we lack confidence, we are actually experiencing fear,' says Judi. 'We're not afraid of our own bodies, we are afraid of social disapproval if our bodies are not seen as "perfect". 'Very few women are happy with their bodies. Next time you feel insecure about your shape, know you're not the only one. Ignore other people's flaws It's fine to compare yourself favourably with other people, but if you feel yourself thinking something critical about someone else's body, stop and think of something complimentary about them instead. Why? If you frequently judge others, you may start to think they are judging you in the same way – and this can make you feel self-conscious. Think gorgeous instead! Forget 'anti-ageing' and think 'positive ageing' It's important to accept and love your body as you get older and change. 'Ageing has begun to seem like a perversion in modern life with anyone sporting natural signs of it rather than rushing off to have work done increasingly being viewed as odd,' says Judi. 'So, make your decision. You can either try to stop the clock or be who you really are. If you decide on the latter, use this mantra to yourself and other people: "I am happy with how I look"' Help yourself feel fabulous Exercise regularly (when we exercise, our bodies release feel-good chemicals called endorphins which boost our happiness) and work in some simple pampering into your daily routine to help you celebrate, care for and reconnect with your body. You deserve it – try using a gorgeous smelling aromatherapy shower gel or massage oil to help you look and feel good. http://www.prima.co.uk

Suspected rat on board grounds Barcelona-Doha flight for over 24 hours
A RAT on board grounded 250 passengers at Barcelona airport and delayed their Qatar Airways flight to Doha on Thursday, airport authorities confirmed today. It was an air hostess who alerted her colleagues of the creature's presence just as the travellers were about to board, and the gate closed immediately. Passengers were given a voucher for bottles of water and sandwiches as they were not sure how long they would have to wait. But a thorough
search did not show any signs of the rat, which is thought to have sneaked onto the airbus during a connecting flight stop in the Philippines. Traps were laid, but were empty when checked several hours later. In the end, as Qatar Airways was unable to put all the passengers on another aircraft, it put them up in hotels and left the craft in Terminal 1 for over 24 hours. Finally, the aircraft returned, empty, to its base in Doha late last Friday. thinkspain
Thai king death: Crown prince coronation ‘delayed for a year’
This is an easy winter craft I did with my son. Unfortunately, we don’t have pinecones in our part of the world, but if you do in yours it would make for a nice joint nature walk and craft to go look for a variety of different shaped pinecones.

Tan polymer clay for face, ears, legs Black polymer clay for nose Pinecone
You will need: Large (4 mm) black beads for eyes Powder blush/rouge Small paint brush
For younger kids it might be good to prep the materials ahead of time. Once all the materials are assembled it goes together fairly quickly. And be sure the area is well ventilated during the baking process. Form the ball into a cone shape and firmly press it into the flat side of the pinecone. Use your thumb to further press and spread the outer edges of the cone onto the pinecone. Using your fingers slightly pinch the point of the cone upward to form an upturned nose. Press the small and large logs into the bottom of the pinecone. Make sure the legs are placed so that the hedgehog is well balanced and won’t fall forward. Use the toothpick to add details to the feet. Slightly press the tiny balls onto the top of the head and then use the back of a small paint brush to create an indention for the inner ears. Myra Hedgehogs 04 Use the toothpick to slightly score the tip of the cone/nose and then place a small ball of black polymer clay onto the scored area for the nose. Press the black beads onto the face for the eyes. This is a trick I use to make a quick and easy mouth. Use a pair of scissors to cut away half of the tip of a drinking straw to create a “U” shape and then press the “U” tip of the straw into the face for the mouth. Perfect mouth every time! Prior to baking, use a small paintbrush and lightly apply blush to the inside of the ears and on the cheeks. Blow away any excess powder. Bake according to manufacturer’s instructions in a well ventilated area. Note: the pinecone may expand a bit during the baking process. Should any of the pieces fall off or come loose, use white tacky glue to re-attach to the pinecone. All pau! http://kiddley.com

Thailand’s Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn wants his coronation held off for at least a year, government officials say. King Bhumibol Adulyadej died on Thursday and the crown prince wants more time to mourn his father. Former Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda is standing in as regent. Current Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha sought to reassure Thais about the succession in a TV address on Saturday, saying they should not worry. This issue was discussed when Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn summoned the regent and Gen Prayuth for an audience, according to Gen Prayuth. The 64-year-old crown prince “asked the people not to be confused or worry about the country’s administration or even about the succession”, Gen Prayuth said in his TV statement. “He said at this time everyone is sad, he is still sad, so every side should wait until we pass this sad time.” Questions about the crown prince’s capabilities have been raised in the past, although the strict lese-majeste
laws prevent any open discussion of these. Gen Prayuth took power in a military coup in 2014 which overthrew the civilian government. He has promised elections next year. The monarchy is seen as a unifying force in Thailand at times of political upheaval and King Bhumibol, who died aged 88, was a figure revered by many Thais. The military government has made clear that Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn will be the new king, reports the BBC’s Jonathan Head in Bangkok, but it just isn’t clear when this will happen. The military has traditionally been intensely loyal to the monarchy. Thailand is beginning a year of official mourning, and entertainment such as TV shows and sports events have been cancelled or toned down. Many Thais are wearing black and mourners have continued to converge on the Grand Palace in central Bangkok to pay their respects to the late king by signing a book of condolences. It is unclear when his cremation will take place but it is not expected until the official one-year mourning period is over. BBC
Google News launches fact check label
Google on desktop and mobile will now feature, fact check, which will add a label next to news stories in search results. Google has launched a new feature, fact check, which will add a label next to news stories in search results. Fact check will appear with other news organisations in Google News and will, Google says, "shine a light on its efforts to divide fact from fiction". Richard Gingras, Google's head of news, added it will "help readers find fact checking in large news stories". He said sites which already have a fact checking service can apply to be included to appear in search results. "You'll see the tagged articles in the expanded story box on news.google. com and in the Google News & Weather iOS and Android apps, starting with the US and the UK," he added in a blogpost. Google will determine whether a fact check is needed for a news story using
the claim review technique. It already labels stories with tabs such as opinion, related and local source. Fact checking is something that has become increasingly popular in the past few years. According to the Duke University Reporter’s Lab, there are more than 100 fact checking sites online including the BBC’s own Reality Check. However, not all fact check sites run by algorithm have been as fortunate when it comes to fulfilling their intended purpose. Facebook overhauled the Trending feature on its site in August to make posts more automated after claims of left-wing bias. Google’s fact check comes in time for the final run-up to next month’s US presidential election. The New York Times also has a fact check site which is keeping tabs on the campaign for the Oval Office. BBC

The Story of Beautiful Girl Rachel Simon
“There was a baby. A couple on the run. And they were different. They were not right.” Rachel Simon’s literary career started with her bestselling memoir of her intellectually challenged sister, Beth in “Riding the Bus with my Sister.” Her motivation for writing both books was not just about Beth but other less fortunate individuals who were institutionalised. In 1972 a programme was shown on US tv about the Willowbrook State School which “horrified” her family. “I came to feel remorse that institutional tragedies had unfolded in a parallel universe” one that was alien to Simon. There seemed to have been a “secret history” which had been “kept out of sight for so long.” It wasn’t just the American “secret shame” but worldwide. Doris Lessing uses shocking but real images based on a German lunatic asylum in “The Fifth Child.” In the UK Panorama exposed the “shocking treatment” of its disabled residents at Winterbourne View Private Hospital in Bristol recently. The Daily Express reported on the story with a shocking headline that speaks for itself: “Evil Carers Caught on TV Jailed For Reign of Cruelty.” Another motivating factor was Dave Bakke’s book: “God Knows his Name: The True Story of John Doe No.24.” It was based on an African American, labelled as “feebleminded” and thrown into an institution like a piece of garbage, branded like an animal, No 24 because no-one knew his name or cared enough to find out. Society dehumanised its most vulnerable. Simon admitted to being “stupefied, horrified and outraged” and the novel became a strong political statement. The book is a tribute to the resilience and courage of Lynnie who was “exiled into the wilderness” of a Pennsylvanian School for the Incurable and
Feebleminded, a place for “defective” children, like a “trap that snaps closed on an animal.” She was originally classified as an upper division “imbecile” and then promoted to the “moron” category. Shocking. No.42 is the love of Lynnie’s life and we as the reader share his suffering and misery. Martha is a retired teacher who abandons her security and promises to “hide” the baby that is bequeathed to her by two runaways, one stormy night. This is Martha’s second chance after ironically being denied motherhood with the loss of her own “defective” child a long time ago “the cruelest chaos imaginable.” After the initial shock she relishes the challenge but her life is turned upside down with constant hideaways to avoid anyone finding out the true identity of the child. Then there is Kate, an attendant at the school who recognises Lynnie’s gift and shows love towards her amidst the abuse and horror. Salvation at a price. Beautiful people full of love in a world full of hate for deformity or simply, disability. Martha keeps a meticulous record of Julia’s life with memorabilia attached to give her some kind of identity when she is no longer able to care for her: “Even after I have passed away, you have only to look in the face of anyone you love and you will see me. I am here for you always.” Unconditional love. Homan’s love for Lynnie is also unconditional, precious and long-lasting. The lighthouse is symbolically a safe haven for Lynnie and the story begins and ends on this note. “Can you imagine a better day than this?” with freedom from oppression and dollops of love to finish a lovely tale. I leave you with a similar rhetorical question: Can you imagine a better novel to read than this one? Windmill Books. ISBN: 978-009955838-5

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help, you can contact me to make an appointment at my workshop or clinic (which is at Maloan’s bar in Albox). << Technology Addiction Part 4>> As promised I will show you the 2 easiest and most powerful ‘Hooks’ that the Technology Industry use to get you and then, more importantly, keep you! The first thing that you have to understand is that it is all about the eyes, and keeping them glued to the screen as long as possible. Whether it’s teasing you with the possibility of a great game upgrade, if you wait long enough, or with the video content you want to see if you’ll sit and watch for 20 seconds — it’s all a game of keeping you in front of your computer or mobile device for as long as possible. This isn’t an evil plan. It’s simply the fact that your constant presence and attention at the screen is gold dust for advertisers! So Technique Number 1: FOMO or the Fear Of Missing Out! Remember those days when you’d get to school or work and everyone would talk about something amazing that happened on TV? Or what about the big game you missed and while everyone stood around talking, you’re standing there not knowing what to say, because you didn’t see (not missed) whatever they are talking about! This fear drove people for decades, to try to do what everyone else is doing — to follow what everyone else is following. The fear of missing out is central to the concept of group-think. Today, it drives people to check text messages while driving, to answer a call while having dinner with the family, or to post to Twitter or Facebook even when going through a medical emergency (I’ve literally seen people post to Facebook that they had to go to the emergency room). Dr. John M. Grohol explains this phenomenon in his article for “Psych Central” is a desire for newer and better connections with other human beings. The “grass is always greener” mentality, where something must be going on somewhere
else that better than what’s going on here, right now. “It’s not ‘interruption,’ it’s connection. But wait a minute… it’s not really ‘connection’ either. It’s the potential for simply a different connection. It may be better, it may be worse — we just don’t know until we check.” As more websites and mobile-based social apps allow more of us to connect to one another with our computers and mobile devices, this is only getting worse. The potential for a new connection and new insight into what’s going on somewhere else is becoming much more frequent, and interrupting our daily lives several times an hour or more. “The fear of missing out (FOMO) — on something more fun, on a social date that might just happen on the spur of the moment — is so intense, even when we’ve decided to disconnect, we still connect just once more, just to make sure.” Technique Number 2: You’re Not Alone. There are thousands of anecdotes on the web from people who are ‘lonely’. There are porn sites, lonely hearts sites, meeting sites and lets not forget Facebook, which was created so the pervert who owns it could look at photos of the college girls. The availability of the Internet in nearly every home, makes it a cheap and easy “solution”. It reduces the need for actual social interaction to accomplish tasks like shopping and work, further isolating an individual who could benefit the most from social experiences. Technology is everywhere, and this issue is only getting worse as it filters into our schools, our smart homes, and even our transportation systems. Good news: there are things you can do this very moment to alleviate and maybe even put a stop to your overwhelming dependence on technology for your emotional “fix”. Even if you’re neck-deep in a tech addiction that seems impossible to escape — there’s hope! Next week we will start to look at the methods to overcome Technology Addiction.

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT
Home sales bounce back in August, but Brexit effect starting to show up in Alicante and Malaga
The number of home sales inscribed in the Spanish property register in August was 20% up on the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), as the market recovery appeared to get back on track after an abrupt halt in July. However, a bounceback in recorded sales was expected simply because the inscription of many previous sales was delayed in July due to a recent Supreme Court ruling on abusive clauses in mortgage contracts, which meant that property registrars suspended the inscription of sales tied to mortgages affected by the ruling. This has distorted the figures, though it’s reasonable to assume that recorded sales would have grown anyway in August, just not by so much. Resales were up 25%, and new home sales up by 3%, another month of growth for new home sales providing further evidence that the years of big declines are now in the past. BY REGION Year-to-date by selected region (focusing on areas where foreigners tend to buy), the Balearics continue to lead the recovery by a wide margin with sales up 36% in the year to August, followed by Almeria up 26%, and Barcelona up 25%. Growth in the Balearics is being driven by resurgent German demand, whilst in Barcelona demand is ever more internationally diversified. Both destinations are also seeing record number of tourist visitors, which is starting to cause political tensions with regard to access to housing. Looking just at sales recorded in August alone by region, searching for
signs of a Brexit impact on Malaga (Costa del Sol), Alicante (Costa Blanca), and Murcia, where the British are the biggest group of foreign buyers, sales are still growing, but significantly less than other regions that attract foreign buyers. This probably reflects lower British demand due to the impact of Brexit on British budgets and confidence. by Mark StĂźcklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com

DIY Projects to Prepare Your Home for Autumn
propert y services
Now that summer is officially behind us and autumn is here, it’s time to think about getting your home ready for the shorter days and colder weather. If you’re looking to tackle some DIY projects in preparation for winter, Home Improvement Leads have come up with a short task list to help you get started. Here are some of their top tips on how to maintain and protect the wood in and around your home this autumn. Exterior Wood DIY Projects As the weather begins to change this autumn, protecting the exterior of your home is essential—especially for external wooden surfaces such as sheds, fences, decking windows, doors and cladding. Here we’ve highlighted some of the more common exterior wood care projects that are perfect for this time of year, that will help you to get your home ready for the change in weather. Winterize your garden decking Repairing and replacing damaged and broken sections of garden decking can be a big job. Prevention is better than cure so Autumn is the time to clean, seal and protect decking boards before the cold, wet and windy weather starts to take hold. Using dedicated decking cleaners, preservatives, stains, and oils to remove mould and fungi from garden decking before protecting and sealing. Now is also the perfect time to recolour or stain your decking to keep it looking better
for longer. Protecting garden decking in the Autumn makes spring cleaning and preparation for the following spring and summer months a whole lot easier. Interior wood care While the wooden surfaces around the exterior of your home will require the most work this autumn, there are several jobs you can complete indoors to complete your home’s seasonal transformation even after the weather has taken a turn for the worse. Maintain your hardwood floors Homeowners who are blessed with original soft & hardwood flooring know that maintenance is key to keeping them looking great. Take the time this autumn to apply oils, varnishes, stains, and cleaners to keep your wooden floors looking their very best. Although this falls under the category of indoor DIY projects, we think that it is best completed before winter truly hits, since you won’t be able to use your floors for a while after applying products and ideally want to keep doors and windows open for ventilation. Restore, renovate or rejuvenate your dining room table If you’re looking for the perfect preholiday project, we recommend giving your dining room table a face lift by cleaning, refinishing or even changing its appearance. Or, if you’re the adventurous type, how about building a new table from scratch. While homeowners who are looking for some labour intensive DIY will love the idea of a handcrafted dining room Visit our showroom and view our range centrepiece, the former of these DIY projects is more of grass or arrange a free quotation. easily achieved. House prices predictions and other forecasts for this year and beyond
Barcelona, one of the hottest housing markets in Spain
A selection of house price predictions and other forecasts taken from a series of articles in the Spanish press, summarised in bullet points. The Spanish Association of Developers and Constructors (APCE) have just finished their most upbeat annual conference in years with business growing in many parts of Spain. The state of the industry was reviewed, and predictions made, coinciding with a slew of forecasts from other sources: • T he real estate recovery is going hand in hand with economic recovery, fueled by lower energy prices, low mortgage rates, and growing employment, with 1.3 million more jobs created. • N ew home building is rising fast (from a low base), with building licences up 27% in Spain between January and May, and 66% in Madrid. • House prices are up 7% in Madrid and 9% in Barcelona. • T he inventory of new homes for sale has largely disappeared in Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao. • H ouse prices will rise by an average of 3% to 5% in the next year and a half say Bankinter, a Spanish bank. • H ouse prices will rise 13% in 2017 led by “Barcelona, Madrid, and the islands, although central areas of the main provincial capitals will also join in,” forecasts Gonzalo Bernardos, economics professor and head of the real estate degree at the University of Barcelona. Bernardos is consistently the most bullish voice around. • B arcelona and Madrid are “really hot markets where the recovery is intense and dangerous,” where prices are rising by “20% driven by the appetite of foreign investors, who see these capitals as part of the Champions’ League of cities in the world,” says Bernardos, referring to specific areas of the two cities in particular. In Madrid the hot areas are fun from Atocha to the Plaza de Castilla, and in Barcelona they include the Eixample, Les Corts, and the Ciutat Vella Old Town. • B ernardos thinks prices are on course to hit their 2007 peaks by 2018, an d then stabilise around +3% in 2019. • L and prices increases an annualised 6.6% in Q2, which points toward rising house prices in the pipeline, say Caixabank Research. Land prices are a leading indicator that anticipate house price trends “by a few quarters” they say, whilst also pointing out that booming mortgage lending “continues to support the recovery” with new mortgage lending up 27% in July.

Autumn in the Sierra de Guadarrama
Spain in Autumn It's undeniably Autumn (or fall, if you're from across the pond). The leaves have started to turn, there's a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings. Most commonly associated with sun and sand beach holidays, Spain isn't just a summer holiday destination: with such a diverse landscape and many more hours of sunshine than the UK, it's worth visiting in every season.
(cochinillo asado), roast lamb and Burgos's famous morcilla (blood sausage).
including little hotels, apartments and casas rurales (country cottages).
October is clearly a big month for patron saints: Ávila also pays homage to its patrona, Santa Teresa. On 15 October, this normally staid city celebrates with parades of giant fallas-style sculptures, an offering of flowers to the saint – and fireworks. The week surrounding the 15th offers a full calendar of bullfights, concerts and other events.
If you're staying in the city, Autumn's a busy time on the old events calendar. The vuelta al cole (back to school) spirit in Spain extends much further than studying, with all the cultural events on hold over summer starting up again. In addition to festivals such
Now the temperature has dropped and the countr yside's looking a little less parched, Autumn's a good time are easily walkable, with cute cascos to make for sierra. antiguos (old quarters), enough the beautiful buildings and monuments A l t h o u g h more to keep you entertained – but not Spain's so many as to put under pressure c o m m o n l y to frantically sight-see. Even better, a s s o c i a t e d the cuisine in these regions seems with mar than designed with Autumn in mind: montaña, there's actually plenty Castille specializes in hearty fare of mountainous territory too, so wherever you are, you won't be too such as Segovia's suckling pig far from some sierra. Whether it, the Valencian coast is beautiful year-round you're a keen hiker or an idle wanderer who prefers m o u n t a i n v i l l a g e s , there will be something to satisfy you. Good escapes include the Sierra de Grazalema in Cádiz province and the Sierra de Guadarrama o u t s i d e Madrid. Both have plenty of good-value accommodation
Where to go in autumn Now the bulk of the tourists have packed their suitcases and headed home, Autumn can actually be a good time to hit the coast. Prices drop in September and October, and while the weather isn't guaranteed to provide suntanning opportunities, it's still likely to be bright and warm. Hedge your bets weather-wise by opting for a city with a beach, like Barcelona, Málaga or Valencia: that way Let's face there'll still be plenty to do if the sun doesn't shine. As Autumn rolls on, it's a good time to head inland and visit cities that are just too damn hot in summer, such as Madrid, Seville and Córdoba. If you aren't looking for a city break, the colder weather is ideal for cosying up in Spain's heartland of the Comunidad de Madrid, Castilla la Mancha and Castilla-León. Towns (and yes, small cities) like Cuenca, León, Salamanca and Segovia
as Seville's Bienal de Flamenco (held in even years), you'll find a full calendar of theatre, opera and dance performances in Spanish cities. It's also the time of year when markets (both of the clothing and farmers' varieties) get going again after their summer holidays, so make sure to check out Madrid's Mercado de Motores. You can find details of other cities' flea markets here. Autumn's a good time for live music too, with festivals such as Monkey Week in El Puerto de Santa Maria and Bilboloop in Bilbao. And if food's more your thing, in October there are street food markets in both Madrid and Barcelona. So, after all that, do you still think of Spain as a summer destination? Where are your favourite places in Spain to visit in Autumn? http://ohhellospain.blogspot.com. es

Apps to Help You Get Stuff Done Around the House
Tackle your DIY projects with these tools Pity the summertime. All year, we long for better weather, using this season as a repository for our plans. I’ll paint the house in the summer. I’ll plant a garden in the summer. I’ll reorganize the garage in — you guessed it — the summer. But all those plans jamming up our calendar doesn’t leave much time for anything fun. These seven apps can help you keep track of your various household chores and projects, so you can spend more time getting things done and less time keeping track of them.
BrightNest
From keeping things clean to making them colorful, Brightnest, developed by the clean freaks behind Angie’s List, is loaded with suggestions on how to make your home a better place to live. With categories of customized tips (money-saving, cleaning, ecofriendly, healthy, cooking, and creative) based on the makeup of your home, there are plenty of great ways to pull inspiration from the app. Flag some as your favorite, and create a schedule for performing the tasks either later or regularly. Never forget to disinfect your garbage disposal — or how best to do it — again. BrightNest is available for free on Android and iOS.
The Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius
For decades, Readers Digest’s Family Handyman Magazine has been a source of advice for conscientious homeowners. This app, curated from the magazine’s troves of back issues,
is full of tips, tricks, and ideas for people looking to make their dwelling a tidier place. From building and remodeling to lawn and garden, there’s a wide range of content to draw from. Or, you could pull tips at random to gradually become the master of your domain. But be advised, this free app is just a small taste of the full maintenance tips here. So don’t hesitate to invest $5 in the “pro” version of the app, which has more home improvement ideas than you’ll know what to do with. The Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius is available for free on Android and iOS.
Home Manager
Maintenance
If you’re one of those fix-it freaks who has a half dozen projects going at once, say hello to your new supervisor. This app does it all, from reminding you to conduct periodic maintenance to tracking projects across multiple properties. And with a history feature, it’s easy to look back and see the last time you performed a task, from checking the back flow on your lawn sprinkler, to cleaning your furnace filters. Sure, you could do this kind of thing with a spreadsheet, but who has time to tinker with one of those where there’s so many other things to get done? Home Maintenance Manager is available for $3.99 on iOS.
Home Design
Styler
Interior
For a lot of people, seeing is believing. That means when it comes time to make a radical change to their place, they’re going to have doubts until they get a visual. This app, made
possible by one of the most powerful 3D-rendering engines on the market, puts professional-level graphics right on your smartphone. It works by starting with a snapshot of your space. Then, you can browse from thousands of design products to see how they’d look in your space. You can also use it to find an interior designer in your area to help guide your tastes, or you can flip through other users’ concepts to get more inspiration for your own home. Home Styler Interior Design is available for free on Android and iOS.
How Your House Works
Many homeowners — especially younger ones — have little idea how the various systems in their houses actually function. That’s a curious thing, especially since most of that technology has been around for decades. This informative app is overflowing with everything from air conditioning to plumbing know-how. It’s w2ritten by home improvement experts, backed with easy-to-follow illustrations, fully searchable by keywords, and loaded with tips on keeping your appliances running smoothly. Pair the $2.99 cost with a little bit of elbow grease, and this app has the potential to save you thousands of dollars on contractor costs. How Your House Works is available for $2.99 on Android and iOS.
Thumbtack
Sometimes projects can get out of control, or you simply need a
helping hand to add the finishing touches. Thumbtack connects users to a network of professionals who submit bids for work. Reviewed by other Thumbtack users, this network of professionals is available across all 50 U.S. states, making Thumbtack an excellent resource for DIYers ready to throw in the towel. And with a wide array of contractors available on the service — including music teachers, yoga instructors, and event planners — there’s even the possibility for some personal improvement when your home job is done. Thumbtack is available for free on iOS.
Zillow Digs
One reason people get bit by the home improvement bug in the summertime is because houses listed for sale are in peak condition, making all the neighbors jealous. People browse real estate websites not just to find a new home, but to get a peek into nearby houses, getting inspired on ways to keep up with the Joneses. This app, developed by Zillow, shares all that intelligence without snooping on your neighbors. With project estimates for kitchen and bathroom projects — often the most expensive and difficult to gauge — it can be a real eye-opener for homeowners before they put the first hole in a wall. Be sure to download this one well before you pick up a hammer. Zillow Digs is available for free on iOS

Famous for Fifteen Minutes
Jóse Prataña was on the prowl for copy. His newspaper, El Trapo Nacional was at a low ebb, not much news and all the improvised stories had led to legal action. Jóse was on the lookout for a good story and Alqueria usually obliged. However the Village was temporarily out of rioting and disorder due to a general lethargy and seemed almost peaceful, in its own quirky sort of way. Jóse sat forlornly at a table outside the Bar La Casa Devante wondering where his next story would come from. He had been to Alqueria before and developed a love of Remitroot Whisky which he drank in alarming quantities and with alarming speed. Loco Paco had a habit of engaging people at random in some inane conversation or other. Jóse Prataña was Paco’s target for that evening. Paco’s confused and fanciful utterings seemed quite credible to Jóse. After a bottle of Remitroot Whisky the Tory Party’s welfare plans would seem compassionate or perhaps that is going a bit too far. Paco was talking about Benjy his pet Saharan Dung Beetle which he had raised from a pup and Bert, his one and a half metre tall rodent which accompanied him everywhere. Bert of course was imaginary. Jóse somehow got the impression he was real. The locals sensing some good sport
backed Loco Paco’s story to the hilt. How he was a reclusive genetic scientist and had successfully created this one and a half metre tall rodent called ‘Bert’. To add a bit of colour they suggested that Paco was teaching Bert the rudiments of playing the saxophone. Jóse made numerous notes, drank more Remitroot Whisky and believed everything he was told. Loco Paco became famous. His fatuous grin adorned the front pages of all the national newspapers. He was hailed as a ‘genetic scientist of colossal proportions’. Some even tipped him for the Noble Prize. Most people who knew Loco Paco however would say that his greatest achievement was riding a bicycle, not well be adequately. Paco was booked to appear on a TV talk show. Other guests included the inventor of the intergalactic pulse motor with integral cheese board and Pedro Alverez the Abyssinian Goat Shirling champion of southern Spain. If the presenter, studio crew and viewers had all been heavily sedated with Remitroot Whisky things may have gone smoothly. However when Paco suggested that the presenter’s head may be on back-to-front the plug was pulled, the researcher fired and Paco send packing back to Alqueria.

She tossed her curls and smirked. She should have known – you do not smirk at a Biggs and get away with it. I leant forward over the counter. In a low voice and very calmly I said ‘They will do my blood test. I will go in early on Tuesday, and have it done before my appointment with the Consulta.’ With that parting blow I turned and departed the field of battle with dignity. Neither of us could claim victory, but I like to think that I gave as good as I got! Blood test not in Arboleas. Albox Centro Medico only on Tuesday, Huercal-Overadoctors approval.

I had Espere’d my Turno, and I stepped up to the Reception counter in the Medical Centre at Albox. With the confidence born of righteous knowledge I asked ‘Can I book a blood test for Friday?’ as I proffered my medical card. I left out the Please, as it is almost always redundant in Spanish. ‘Note from the doctor?’ snapped the receptionist. ‘I don’t need a note from the doctor. The blood test has been requested by the Oncology department at HuercalOvera.’ She regarded me icily. ‘You must have a note from your GP. Where is your GP?’ ‘In Arboleas.’ I thought I could second-guess where she was coming from, and her next sentence was going to be along the lines of ‘This is Albox. Go to Arboleas.’ I added hastily ‘Arboleas doesn’t do blood tests on Fridays. They told me to come here.’ She chewed on this for a second. I repeated ‘The test has been requested by Oncology, in HuercalOvera. They suggested that I have the test done locally on Friday to save time on Tuesday, when I see the Consulta’while simultaneously waving my Oncology paper in front of her. She re-grouped her forces and attacked her keyboard, which as far as I could see was innocent, and had done nothing to warrant such an onslaught. ‘Tuesday.’ She spat out with all the venom of a cobra with toothache. ‘No, it has to be Friday.’ Moses managed to part the Red Sea with a staff, so surely I could manage a

Ingredients 500g/1 lb 2oz fresh mussels For the sauce 2 tsp garlic, finely chopped 1 tbsp fresh root ginger, finely chopped 1 tsp chilli bean sauce 1 tbsp Shaoxing rice
Mussels recipes
wine or dry sherry 1 tbsp light soy sauce 2 tsp dark soy sauce 2 fresh red chillies, seeded and chopped 3 tbsp spring onions, finely shredded 3 tbsp groundnut or peanut oil fresh coriander sprigs, to garnish
Method Scrub the mussels clean. Discard any mussels that don't close when tapped gently. Set up a steamer or put a rack into a wok or deep pan and fill it with 5cm/2in of water. Bring the water to the boil over a high heat. Place the mussels on a plate, then place the plate into the steamer or onto the rack. Turn the heat to low so the water is barely simmering and cover the wok or pan tightly. Steam gently for five minutes or until the mussels begin to open. Meanwhile, combine all the sauce ingredients, except the oil, in a heatproof bowl. Heat a wok or large frying-pan over high heat. When hot, add the oil. Heat the oil until it's very hot and slightly smoking, then pour the hot oil over the sauce
Steamed mussels
Often regarded as poor man's shellfish, mussels are cheap and plentiful. In the wild, they grow on coastline rocks and stones and are farmed in suitable coastal waters. Mussels are one of the most environmentally sound types of fish or shellfish available. There's no hefty price tag and, what's more, these little creatures are in abundance. ingredients. Remove the mussels from the steamer. Discard any mussels that haven't opened. Stir the sauce then pour over the mussels. Garnish with fresh coriander sprigs and serve at once.

Jack and Toby are approx 12 weeks old and were thrown over a fence of a finca, thankfully the guard dog at the property didn’t touch them and they are now safe in one of our foster homes. Last Thursday K9 received a call about two pups, whose mother had just been killed on the road and as the owner of the dogs could not be traced, K9 took them in. Mum was a medium sized dog, so we do not think the pups will be much bigger. Bailey, born early September 2016, she is absolutely lovely, being slightly quieter than her brother Guinness. She is absolutely gorgeous, being an unusual brown and tan little girl. She takes everything in and will sit and watch what is going on. Bailey is really playful as she should be at just over 5 weeks old. She has been wormed and treated for external parasites. She enjoys her food and loves snuggling up with her brother. Guinness was born early September with his sister Bailey. Sadly their mother was killed by a car, so K9 took in these orphaned pups. He is a very handsome black and tan little boy and will probably be a medium sized dog. He is very playful and very inquisitive. Like his sister, he loves people and both are very friendly who love snuggling up with each other.

Easy Walking on Historic Railway Line in October
Thirty members and friends, and one dog, assembled opposite the El Saladillo restaurant between Mazarron and Camposol on 8th October. Our route started along the side of the restaurant and then along what we all refer to as “the old railway line to Puerto,” although actually there ever was a railway line, just a proposal and some preparatory diggings. Nevertheless, it has resulted in a good flat walking surface, which is duly appreciated. The "old railway line" is scheduled for improvements by the Region of Murcia Tourist authority with more than 2 Million Euros allocated to the project. The project will create a part of the Network of Greenways of Murcia, and improvements will include provision of shaded rest areas, signage and planting of native species of plants. The railway was started in 1926 by the dictator Primo de Rivera but due to economic reasons was never completed. For more information go to ht tp://lospiesenlatierra.laverdad. e s/blo g/3425--nuevas-viasverdes-entre-totana-cartagena-ymazarron?fontstyle=f-smaller Eventually the more active members of the group (most of them) took a right turn into the pine woods, which gave some welcome
shade; the promised temperature of 26* was felt by quite a few people to have been exceeded. We soon rejoined the rest of the group, and after a welcome break
in the shade of a large pine tree, started on the return leg. By 2:00pm we were all assembled in the La Siena restaurant in Mazarron, along with one or two non-walking friends, to enjoy our Menu del Dia. You are very welcome to join us on these monthly easy walks, or our slightly more strenuous 3 hour walks, or any of the other Humanists of Murcia activities, which includes Discussion and Philosophy Groups which cover a wide range of topics related to how to lead a good life without god. Please see our we b sit e” humanis t s ofmur c ia. com” for details of our programme.
Strictly Week 4 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635 584 431
With the standards being very high this year, the competition is really starting to bite! Opening this week’s show were Greg Rutherford and Natalie with a Salsa. Greg pulled off some very difficult lifts but his salsa basic left a lot to be desired, stiff, twine toed and flat footed. Not his dance! I gave him 6 and the judges 28. Next were Laura Whitmore and Giovanni and Quickstep. For my liking too much hopping and skipping and not enough Quickstep. Her head was too far back and if not corrected will cause posture problems. I gave her 7 and the judges 33. Next were Anastacia and Brendan and a Rumba. Another performance with insufficient basic figures to truly portray the dance. A sexy performance but lacking for me. The Poppy Appeal is well under way and you can find poppies and collection boxes in bars, restaurants & shops in the Mazarrón district. Remembrance Day (11th November) is on a Friday, when many choose to observe 2 minutes silence at 11am (midday local time) as a mark of respect for the fallen. This year is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, which was fought at such terrible cost that it has come to symbolise the tragic futility of the First World War. Its first day of conflict remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army and it was felt deeply at home. Murray lifts Shanghai title and closes in on number one spot
The Scot beat Roberto Bautista 7-6, 6-1 and won the tournament without dropping a set to move to within 915 points of Novak Djokovic in the ranking. Andy Murray put on a second set display of ruthlessness to defeat Roberto Bautista 7-6 (7/1), 6-1 in the final of the Shanghai Masters to lift the title for a third time and without dropping a set. 10-match winning streak, marching to back-to-back titles in China including last week's China Open victory in Beijing. Murray also cuts the gap on Djokovic, who was shocked by Spain's Bautista in the semis, to 915 points as he zeroes in on the Serb's top ranking. However, the number two said ahead of Sunday’s final he was not expecting to overhaul the Serbian by the end of this season. Murray: "Number one this year not realistic" "My goal is not to try and reach number one this year. I'd have to win pretty much every match between now and the end of the year. And Novak would have to win hardly any," Murray said. "So it's not in my hands. I want to try and get there, but I don't think doing that by the end of this year is that realistic. So I just want to try and finish this year as strong as I can. Maybe give myself a chance at doing it the early part of next year.” "The last few months I've played very well in all of the tournaments and obviously I'm happy to be back in the final again here," the 2010 and 2011 winner told the Shanghai crowd after his triumph.
Murray also significantly closed the gap in the ATP ranking on world number one Novak Djokovic. The Wimbledon and Olympic champion won seven points in a row in the firstset tie-breaker and broke Bautista three times in the second set to lift his third Shanghai title. Second-ranked Murray has now won 20 straight sets in a Murray's first serve of the match was a thumping ace and he took a grip on the first set at 3-3 when Bautista netted a backhand to lose the first break point of the match. But Murray, serving at 5-4, lost three set points and got in a tangle on a drop shot to hand Bautista his first break point, which he converted with a strong forehand. The Briton slammed three consecutive aces for 6-6 and he dominated the tiebreak, winning seven points in a row and taking the set with a sizzling backhand return. A string of Bautista errors put Murray a break up at the start of set two, but to his obvious frustration he gave it straight back with a miscued forehand. But Bautista twice double-faulted to go a break down before handing over yet another break, making victory a formality for Murray who buried his first championship point. Edberg landmark With his 41st tournament victory and sixth this year, Murray joins Stefan Edberg in joint 15th place on the list of Open-era title winners. http://en.as.com

Márquez seals third MotoGP title
Márquez celebrates on the podium after his victory. TOSHIFUMI KITAMURA (AFP)
The Spaniard took an unassailable championship lead with victory in Japan as Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo crashed out. Marc Márquez clinched his third MotoGP championship on Sunday by winning the Japanese Grand Prix after rivals Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo both crashed out. Youngest ever three-time champion The 23-year-old Honda man’s victory at Motegi gave him an unassailable 77-point advantage over Italian Rossi, who started on pole but slid into the gravel early. Already the youngest rider to win a MotoGP race and the title in his maiden season in 2013, the Spaniard’s triumph in Japan made him the youngest to claim three championships. Márquez finished nearly three seconds ahead of Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso, with Suzuki’s
Maverick Vinales third. Lorenzo follows Rossi in crashing out With Rossi, a seven-time premier class champion, quickly out of contention, Spain’s Lorenzo needed to finish fourth or better to keep his title defence alive. Lorenzo, who suffered a terrifying crash in practice on Saturday but returned to the track to qualify third on the grid, battled to keep within touch of Márquez. But he came under pressure from a hard-charging Dovizioso and his race ended in the gravel with five laps to go after a front end skid. The championship, now a victory procession for Márquez, heads to Phillip Island, Australia next week. http://en.as.com

Although we run 3 categories on the day the Captain’s Stableford competition is based on all overall scores and the best 3 of 4 rounds to count over the course of this season. The course was in good condition but many players were asking what had been done to the greens, they were too fast!! This was reflected in the Bronze category results. It seems that the lower handicappers handled the speed better with both winners returning scores better than par.

trouble the Minerva defence in a disappointing first half performance. Too many passes went astray and the tempers of the visiting team were not helped by the referee who seemed to penalise Mazarron at every opportunity.
