CHARGE FOR BRITISH TO ENTER SPAIN IN NEW EU PLAN
Interior ministers of the EU will meet tomorrow to discuss the bureaucratic plan. To make non EU-residents pay the current rate of £4.30 and give their details online before entering any of the 26 Schengen states. BRITISH people will be forced to pay €5 to enter Spain under new EU proposals. Interior ministers of the EU will meet tomorrow to discuss the bureaucratic plan to make non EU-residents pay the current rate of £4.30 and give their details online before entering any of the 26 Schengen states. This would include both those living in Gibraltar and in the UK, thanks to the Brexit vote. British EU diplomat Sir Julian King has defended the move, which he believes will strengthen security measures against terrorism following the attacks in Belgium and France. According to the European Commission, the Etias scheme would apply to nonEU residents aged over 18. Once they have signed up, they will be able to make multiple trips over a five year period. EU Security Commissioner Sir King, talking to the Press Association, said: “We think this is going to be a valuable additional piece of the jigsaw. “It will allow us to know more about the people who are planning to come to the EU in advance so that if necessary they raise questions about either security or in some cases migration. “We’ll be able to intervene even before they arrive in some cases.” In tomorrow’s meeting, Amber Rudd, the British interior minister for the EU will consider the plan together with a packet of proposals to fight against terrorism. Rudd caused controversy in EU circles in October when she defended the possibility of a visa for foreign workers coming to the UK. expatica.comn

SPANISH RETAILERS GEAR UP FOR BLACK FRIDAY 2016
Some brands are already advertising their upcoming discounts, while others prefer to remain coy Spanish retailers are preparing to hold their fifth Black Friday, a shopping event that has met with significant sucess in a country with no prior tradition of it. Though formally held the day after US Thanksgiving – on November 25 this year – major brand names are spreading their promotions throughout the weekend and into Monday. In 2012, a small group of Spanish stores first decided to introduce the idea of a pre-Christmas sale day mirroring America’s hugely popular Black Friday. In 2013 and 2014 they were joined by some of the country’s largest retailers, including department store chain El Corte Inglés, fashion giant Mango and several brands in the Inditex group – the parent company of clothing chain Zara. Several brands are favoring online markdowns over in-store discounts The event has been gaining traction ever since, and growing numbers of retailers are joining each year. Amazon said it is hoping to increase sales by 80% on 2015 figures, and to sell in excess of a million products in 24 hours. A company spokesman said that 560,000 units were sold during Black Friday 2015. The online retail giant

Police in Spain have long focused on prevention -- including nipping propaganda in the bud -- in its strategy to fight jihadism, with the adoption in 2015 of a law allowing authorities to detain people who merely consult jihadist websites. According to the ministry, 163 alleged jihadists have been detained since 2015, when Spain increased its terror alert to four out of five. But unlike France or Belgium, the country is less exposed to the return of nationals who went to fight abroad and plan to commit extremist acts on home soil. Only around 200 Spaniards are estimated to have gone abroad to fight, compared to thousands from nearby France and Belgium. thelocal
CHILDREN LEFT HOME ALONE IN MURCIA AFTER PARENTS LEAVE THE COUNTRY
SOCIAL services in Murcia have launched an inquiry after a couple went off to China leaving their 15-year-old son and his sister, eight, home alone. Teachers at the little girl's school alerted authorities when they saw the child had not washed, was wearing dirty clothes which were wrong for the time of year, had head lice and had even cut her own hair. When social workers went to the child's home, they found the property
full of rubbish, with rotting remains of food scattered everywhere and dried excrement in the bath. The boy was found not to have been going to school, and he explained his parents had gone to their native China a month before and left him to care for his little sister. Both youngsters were taken into care and legal action is being taken against the parents. thinkspain

MARRY ME – BAH HUMBUG!
It’s only a couple of weeks to go until Studio32’s production of “A Christmas Carol” hits town, and this talented company are into the final stages of rehearsals. Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to book your seat for this festive extravaganza. Studio32 are always keen to recruit and develop young talent, and two of the roles in this production are played by newcomers to Studio32. Young Ebenezer and his fiancée Emily are played by Luke Ringrose and Emily Bentley respectively (pictured). Luke recently moved to Spain and was keen to put his musical theatre talent to good use so was quickly snapped up by Studio32. Emily has been here rather longer and is an accomplished dancer – now she is stretching herself further with acting and singing under guidance from Studio32’s resident director/choreographer Susan Zillah Wilson. “A Christmas Carol” is set on Christmas Eve, when everyone – except Ebenezer Scrooge – is
preparing to make merry and celebrate Christmas. Scrooge is visited by three ghosts: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Each in turn takes Scrooge through a part of his life that has been or is yet to be, in order to encourage him to mend his miserly ways. Ebenezer is reminded of his love for Emily, but ultimately he sacrifices that love for a greater love – money! Will he ever repent and mend his ways? Book your seat to find out!

NEW APP HELPS COLOUR-BLIND USERS BETTER DISTINGUISH COLOURS
A new app from Microsoft could help colour-blind users get visual clarity. Being colour blind affects 1 in 12 men in the world and 1 in 200 women. More often than not, the entire colour spectrum isn’t affected, but sufferers struggle with identifying shades of red and green. The Color Binoculars app uses your iPhone’s camera, and enhances reds and greens to make them more obvious. Creator Tom Overton said the app came out of fulfilling a personal need as well. “Anything with red or green messes me up,” said Tom Overton, who developed the app. “It’s not so terrible, but it does affect you. For instance, fall leaves don’t look any different for me than other leaves. They look like they always do. It takes a lot of colour out of my life – metaphorically, that is.” While Color Binoculars doesn’t cure colour blindness, it certainly helps. Overton noted he created the app in Microsoft Garage, colorblind[Image Courtesy of Microsoft Microsoft’s in-house creation lab on the App Store] for apps. The app doesn’t save images or video, but simply “translates” the images into a language colour Colour blindness is often genetic, blind users’ eyes understand. BRUSH YOUR TEETH THE RIGHT WAY WITH THE GIGGO TOOTHBRUSH Struggle with dental issues? You could be brushing your teeth wrong. The Giggo electric brush looks to correct your bad brushing habits. It’s designed to simulate the Bass brushing method – the brushing order preferred by dentists. Rather than brushing down, Giggo brushes brush in the way your teeth grow – upward from the gum. Often, back and forth directions do more harm than good for your teeth. That method also misses considerable spots between teeth – those spots that the flossing you lie about doing should cover. While other electric brushes do a more effective job than traditional brushes, they’re often noisy. Vibrations that are too strong can also damage the enamel. Electric brushes don’t always guarantee proper technique. All you have to do to start is place the bristles at a 45 degree angle from you gum line. Giggo can be simply operated with only three buttons. For your top teeth, press the upper
button. The brush will then rotate down to accommodate of growth patterns. When you’re ready to hit the bottom teeth, press the bottom button to rotate the bristles upward. Giggo’s makers claim the bristles rotate at an “optimal spinning speed,” giving both comfort and cleanliness for your dental hygiene. The brush heads should be replaced every three months, and Giggo offers deals for buying the brush heads in bulk. The battery also lasts surprisingly long on just one charge. One full battery gives users two months on a single charge, assuming you’re brushing twice a day as dentists recommend. Oral health plays a vital role in our overall health. Healthy mouths ward off things like gingivitis, plaque buildup and bleeding gums. They can also have a huge role in long-term conditions. Gum disease can serve as indicators for diabetes or cardiovascular disease. For those interested in ordering early, the $69 early bird special will get the toothbrush to you by December. Additional brush head packages will be available in March 2017. http://interestingengineering.com

BRITONS TO BE BANNED FROM HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN OVER FAKE SICKNESS CLAIMS
A RISE in sickness claims is leading hotels in Spain to consider banning Brits. There has been a shocking rise in holidaymakers making fake claims of suffering from vomiting and diarrhea abroad. A growing number of hotels in the Costa del Sol, Valencia, Costa Blanca and Benidorm have now warned they could be banned from staying there. It could cost Spain up to €60 million. Nuria Montes, from Spain’s hoteliers association HOSBEC, said: “The number of claims has increased significantly since the start of this year, when the ‘claims farm’ started their campaign to attract British tourists coming through tour operators. “This is not happening only in Spain, similar situations are being produced in other European destinations such as Greece and Cyprus, and also in the Caribbean. “We estimate that during 2016 the number of claims may be around 10,000, reflecting a very significant increase compared to previous years. “We have estimated that the economic impact on the Spanish hotel industry will be around €60million, in case the hotel industry has to bear the full cost.” It will see the cost of holidays increase, leaving airlines and tour operators unimpressed. Richard Conroy, founder of travel illness company SickHoliday.com, worries the fake cash-grabs will undermine legitimate investigations, where real holiday sickness can lead to long-term disease. He said: “Fraudulent holiday sickness claims are on the rise — we turn down four or five cases we feel are bogus each week ourselves. “The only thing this trend is going to do is push up the cost of holidays by roughly 10% while punishing those who have genuine grievances with tour operators. “We estimate there are around 25,000 fraudulent claims for holiday sickness per year. “Criminal charges need to be brought. Until that happens, we all suffer.” http://www.expatica.com

STAYING WARM THIS WINTER Whether you’re stuck in a drafty office building all day or simply want to slash that heating bill, there are plenty of low-tech ways to keep warm without cranking up the thermostat or busting out the space heater.
a roaring bonfire to heat things up. Light a few candles around your immediate workspace or at the dinner table to keep those finger tips toasty. You can even DIY your own tea light heater. The added ambiance doesn’t hurt either. BREAK OUT THE HOT WATER BOTTLE Skip the electric blanket, which will jack up your electric bill, in favour of a more low-tech bed warmer: the hot water bottle. If you don’t want to run to the drug store to buy one, you can also heat up a package of dried beans or rice in the microwave for a minute, wrap it in a pillowcase, and slide it between your sheets for a few hours of warmth. COVER YOUR FLOORS Nothing gives you the chills like walking around on freezing floors, and no amount of fuzzy socks can really protect you from that ice-cold bathroom tile in the a.m. Cover any bare floors with rugs this winter, and you’ll be walking warmer all season.

BECOME A BAKER
Drinking something warm raises your core body temp. But there’s a little-known, crucial caveat: You have to be bundled. The hot beverage makes you sweat, and if that sweat is allowed to evaporate, it will actually make your colder. You’ll want to skip the hot toddy too. Don’t be fooled by the warm, fuzzy feelings you get with the first few sips: Alcohol actually lowers your body temperature.
Just because you’ve vowed to stay away from that thermostat dial doesn’t mean your house has to feel arctic. Luckily your home has another heat source: the oven. Using it will heat up your kitchen quickly. Plus you’ll be left with a fresh-from-the-oven batch of chocolate chip cookies to combat any residual chills.

WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR WINTER The days are getting shorter and colder, which means Jack Frost is at your door and he’s looking to freeze your pipes and give you the flu as an early Christmas gift. Fortunately, here are some tips that’ll keep you warm and protect your home from the jaws of winter.
SORT OUT INSURANCE
YOUR
HOME
Check to make sure that your home insurance policy is up to scratch and that you’re covered for winter-related damage. If it comes to sorting out water damage to your Christmas presents or fixing a leaky roof, you’ll be glad you had the right cover in place.
GET YOUR BOILERS LOOKED AT A poorly maintained boiler wastes more energy and costs more, and it also runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Either get your boiler serviced before winter or change your old model for a condensing unit.
GUTTERING As summer draws to a close, the leaves will start falling, and gutters and drainpipes will start to get filled with loose foliage.
Once the blockage becomes too much, water will start to back up in the guttering and leak into the roof and down the walls of the house. Make sure your gutters are completely free from grime and dirt to minimise water blockage.
TREE TRIMMING You know who’s to blame for your guttering getting clogged up with leaves? It’s those trees, making a mess of your house and getting away with it. Take a stand against them and get them trimmed away from the house. This will reduce the amount of foliage that will drop into the guttering.

Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and you can either seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips, or get one of those funny draught excluders shaped like a snake or a dog.
BONUS TIP Stock up on hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring down with freezing cold rain, in the middle of a blizzard or gale force winds, sitting down on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate in winter is one of the best feelings ever. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/

EXPERT ART ARRANGING TIPS
Tired of boring bare walls, but don't know how to fill them? These expert tips tackle common art-arranging frustrations. Artful Arranging Yikes! It's the attack of the empty wall! If you've ever done battle with bare walls, these tips are for you. Our art-arranging experts, have put together fool proof ways to display your favourite art, photography, and other eye candy. Paper First Don't pound a single nail before you do a little planning. Decide which pieces you want on the wall, then trace their shapes onto paper. Cut out the shapes and experiment with various placements. This small step will save your drywall from misplaced nail holes. Centre of the Universe One of our favourite approaches for over-the-sofa art arranging is the "galaxy" technique. Start with a central, dominant image. Here, it's the silhouette potted peonies art. Radiate other pieces outward
and upward around the central piece. We advise using artwork that hangs together well; look for similar colours, tones, and themes. Or try same-colour frames to unite disparate pieces. Shape Up When creating your own "galaxy" on the wall, pay special attention to shape. This technique works particularly well with pieces of varying shapes and sizes. Incorporate round or oval pieces to give your collection visual interest. ...Or Not To Centre One of the best rules for arranging art is to throw out the rules! Who says art must be centred over a sofa, sideboard, or bed? Instead of centring, think balance. Here, a grouping of similar images on one side of the sofa balances the trio of industrial light fixtures on the other. Another idea: Extend your artwork over the edge of the sofa to visually expand your space. Puppy Paper It's easy to create art that matches your room's palette. Score wallpaper scraps from old projects or friends, or search for pretty scrapbooking papers at your local crafts store. Frame them alone, or add a fun silhouette, like the dogs we used here. Great Groupings One of the trickiest aspects of arranging multiple pieces is coordinating the look. We suggest finding a common theme. Perhaps its similar subject matter, such as the dogs featured in this grouping. Or maybe the

colours are similar (yellows and greens dominate here). Try keeping the frames within a strict colour palette (glossy browns tie this quad of artworks together). Off The Wall Looking for a unique way to display art? Try taking it off the wall. We love peeks of art or photography on bookshelves, atop mantels, inside display armoires, or in unexpected spots, such as leaning against a chair back. Small Spaces Very small pieces of art can sometimes drown in big expanses of bare walls. Instead, seek out cosy spots to tuck these tiny treasures. Try the back of a bookshelf, an oddly shaped corner, or minuscule stretch of wall in a small bathroom or kitchen. Change Is Good This technique is perfect for commitment-phobes, parents of budding kid-artists, and those of you with massive art collections and
not-somassive wall space. We created a "constant canvas" (click to the next slide for the how-to), then installed a piano light above to bring attention to the miniature museum on the wall. Then we framed each kid masterpiece in an identical inexpensive frame to bring cohesion to the display. Constant Canvas To create the cool backdrop shown here, buy a section of plywood and enough burlap to cover it -and then some. Plan for at least 2 inches of overhang around all sides of the plywood. Position the burlap atop the plywood. Staple the edges of the burlap to the back of the plywood, pulling taut but not too tightly. 3-D Display Want to add dimension to your display wall? Purchase frame risers that offset artwork several inches from the wall. Use them to highlight and layer your pieces. http://www.bhg.com/

REMEMBRANCE THERESA BRESLIN
This novel is compelling reading for everyone interested in war or romance. When you read it you will see lots of evidence of Breslin’s research into the first world war. It’s also a personal drama mainly of two families who become closer and share the great tragedy of loss. We learn about the war through the personal struggles and traumas faced by the soldiers and Breslin uses a sequence of letter-correspondence to show her truth about the horrors of war. Maggie and Charlotte seem compelled to help the war effort at home but they long for action in France where casualties are severe and nurses are needed urgently. The older generation epitomises the pride and glory of fighting for one’s country and one example of this is when Francis is given a white feather as a sign of cowardice because he has not, as yet, conscripted. The younger generation have mixed feelings; those who have been socially conditioned and less educated share the concept of honour and glory like their parents and grandparents. Others like Francis and eventually Maggie and Charlotte, realise the horrors and brutality of fighting a war to die a horrible death. Where is the honour
and glory? A sad point for me and there were many tragic moments in the novel is when Alex, keen to enlist, but too young, steals his friend’s birth certificate and runs away to do his bit for England and more importantly, to avenge his brother’s death. The reality of war for Alex is cruel and shocking as he lives through a nightmare, his childhood and innocence shattered. Remembrance is an apt title for those survivors and those who lost family members but it is also apt for the reader. The novel explores our vulnerability and the total loss of innocence. It conveys a serious message that is applicable as much today as it was then. In Flanders Field - McCrae. At the Somme, around Thiepval, and in Beaumont, Hamel they walk through preserved trenches and stand looking into the huge nine craters. By the roadside and on the hills they see Cemetery after cemetery, collections of headstones among fields fertile with crops. The white clay clings, and they spend time wiping boots before reboarding the coach. Publishers: Corgi Yearling Books. ISBN: 0-552-54738-7 www.theresabreslin.co.uk

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help that comes from over 37 years experience, you can contact me to make an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you! Today’s topic is about how to avoid phishing scams. For more information send me your email address and password; full name and all the bank details you can find. Thank you from the bottom of my wallet! Just a little bit obvious wasn’t it! Don’t worry if you have fallen for it, I will delete you emails, and scrub the system, after all I want to earn your money helping resolve your computer problems NOT steal it! I have seen this particular type of scan used everywhere from Facebook to my own email account. So what is phishing and why is it spelt badly? Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. The word is a neologism (new word) created as a homophone (sounds similar) of fishing due to the similarity of using a bait in an attempt to catch a fish (victim). Why do people resort to using this form of “social engineering” to achieve their aims? Well that is really easy to answer. It is easier than breaking onto the Hotmail / Google / Yahoo servers and downloading thousands of account details. Actually, it is much easier as you and I are wanting to trust! We have been taught to trust from being very young “If your lost, go find a bobby” - having worked for the police this is the last bit of advice that I would ever
offer any child! Like so many of you, I have been on the end of a “phishing line”, some are direct, devious and so quick that you might miss the fact that you have been hooked, while others are taken slowly, deliberately so that you become emotionally entangled and thereby lose your normal objectivity. Let me give an example of both and the tools to beat them at their own game. Example direct: Today, I got an email from “Outlook” which read “Hi User (Polite introduction but if it was sent to me why didn’t they use my name?), Access to your e-mail is about to Expire, Your Email account will be close if you fail to verify Today (Justification for you getting this email). Please use Follow here (‘Follow Here’ pointed to a web address that had nothing to do with Outlook) to complete verification. Have a great day! Outlook Team.” I click on the web link and was taken to a very official and authentic looking ‘Outlook’ login website (which I knew was fake but I was curious). Now the rules. If when you put the cursor over the address link (usually in blue and underlined) if the address doesn’t ‘look’ right, stay away. If you have already clicked on it and are now at the website, look at the URL (the address in the bar near the top of your browser) does it say “www.outlook.com” or whoever is your email provider, if so close the page and delete the email. Unfortunately, having written the other obvious type of scam “The Girlfriend” (this is a genuine scam - although there might be women out there who only want you for your money!) I had run out of space so will visit that one next week. Anyway until next week – TTFN.

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT HOME SALES RISE 10% IN SEPTEMBER SAY NOTARIES, PRICES FALL
Spanish property market by sales volume. July 2007 = 100. Source: Notaries. The Spanish housing market expanded 10.3% by volume in September compared to the same time last year, according to the Association of Spanish Notaries. There were 34,918 home sales witnessed by notaries in September, up 10.3% year-onyear, with apartment sales up 10.1% (9.7% excluding subsidised housing), and singlefamily home sales up 11.1%. Resale apartment transactions were up 14%, but newly built flat sales were down 22%. As you can see from the chart above, the Spanish housing market is still just half the size of it’s bubble proportions in July 2007, but has recovered from a low of 30% at the end of 2012. The average price of property sold was 1,236 €/m2, a decline of 3.5% compared to September last year. New residential mortgage lending was up 10.6%, with an average loan value of €115,000, down 10.7%. So another month of home sales rising whilst the national average price of property fell (disguising big local differences). The Spanish property market continues its patchy recovery, with sales and prices rising in some areas (mainly where foreigners buy) and falling in many others. by Mark Stücklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com

Last week, The Independent reported that David Cameron’s Government had agreed with a House of Lords committee finding that referendums “cannot be legally binding in the UK, and are therefore advisory.” The rediscovery is a deeply embarrassing one for Theresa May because it gives a hint of the direction her predecessor’s government would have taken if it had lost the Scottish independence referendum in 2014. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is doing just that, declaring at the SNP’s party conference last week that she intends to push ahead with plans for a second independence referendum. Sturgeon cited as her reason the descent into a ‘hard’ Brexit – the removal of the UK from the EU single market, immigration kerbs and support for the Great Repeal Bill (the incorporation of existing EU law into British law) – as an unfavourable and undemocratic outcome for Scotland. She has a point. 62 percent of Scots voted to Remain compared to the 52 percent in England who opted to Leave. Despite this, there has been scant evidence of any increased support for independence in the aftermath of the EU vote. A YouGov poll of more than 1,000 Scots found that 46 percent of respondents would vote for Scottish independence, while 54 percent wanted to remain in the UK (a change of 1 percent in favour of independence since the original result of 45 percent Yes and 55 percent No). So is the Union, as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson himself pondered, at risk from Brexit? Firstly, posturing from all sides is bluster given that Article 50 hasn’t even been triggered yet. Secondly, there is no popular appetite for a second Scottish referendum beyond SNP supporters and no legal basis for it anyway. Only Westminster

has the power to legislate on domestic referenda, and if Sturgeon proceeded with an unofficial one it would be nonbinding as happened with the 2014 Catalonia self-determination vote. Thirdly, Sturgeon representing Scotland unilaterally in international relations is a clear violation of the 1998 Scotland Act which guarantees devolved areas like health and education to Scotland and reserves areas like foreign policy to the UK Government. If Sturgeon doesn’t have the legal legitimacy to represent Scotland or to hold another referendum then her actions those of a paternalist who thinks she knows better. Announcing that her government is setting up a ‘Scottish Office’ in Berlin to promote trade is treading the thin line between promoting Scotland and negotiating foreign affairs. Nevertheless, the UK Government needs to be careful it does not become strident and needlessly antagonise nationalists. Scotland Secretary David Mundell and his Northern Irish and Welsh counterparts have already been told they will be asked only to attend meetings of the European Union Exit and Trade Committee “as required”, fuelling the ire of the Scottish Government that they are being excluded from negotiations. Brexit storms on. While the Prime Minister has conceded that Parliament will get a vote on whatever postArticle 50 deal she secures for the UK, it won’t get a vote on whether to leave the EU itself. This will inevitably aid the SNP’s position, and in this case quite rightly. As Harold Macmillan once said, the union between Scotland and England is of the wedding band, not of handcuff. All parties should remember this in the months and years ahead.

THREE OUT OF 10 UK FIRMS PLAN TO CUT BACK INVESTMENT IN SPAIN
Brexit prompting some companies to rethink overseas strategy, says new report Nearly 30% of British companies with interests in Spain say they will reduce their investments here in the wake of Brexit, says a survey of businesses conducted for the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain. British investment in Spain may feel the impact of Brexit. British investment in Spain may feel the impact of Brexit. /Justin Tallis (AFP) The Barometer on Climate and Outlook for British Investment in Spain, drawn up between July and September, says UK businesses looking for a post-Brexit survival strategy could reduce their exposure to Spain by an average 10% or more. But 60% said they will maintain current investment levels, while 8% reported that they are planning to increase them. The 10-month lack of government in Spain did not hurt British investment Despite Britain’s decision in June to leave the European Union, these companies feel it is possible in the mid-term to establish “a new framework for economic relations that will maintain investment flows to Spain,” says the report, released on Thursday. The study finds that the UK has the third-highest foreign direct investment (FDI) stock in Spain, accounting for 11% of the total. As of 2014, British investment had created 161,353 direct and indirect jobs, especially in telecommunications (€14.3 billion), tobacco (€6.2 billion) and wholesale trade (€2.1 billion). It also contributes to state revenues with annual €6.1 billion paid out in taxes and social insurance contributions. In 2014, British FDI stock in Spain was €37.6 billion, €7.3 billion more than the previous year, but down from the highs of 2008, when it reached €46 billion. The report finds that the political uncertainty in Spain over the 10-month lack of government during 2016 did not hurt British investment, which grew in the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2015. However, FDI into Catalonia did show a decline. The UK has the third highest foreign direct investment (FDI) stock in Spain “This could reflect greater caution by British investors over the political instability in the region in recent times, although the downward trend seems to have reverted in the last few quarters,” reads the report. Respondents said that the business climate in Spain is acceptable and has even improved over the last two or three years. But they also added that the Spanish economy should accelerate its digitization process and that government agencies should invest more in R&D&i and reduce the bureaucratic burden on business. The research for the study was conducted by Analistas Financieros Internacionales (AFI). elpais
POUND RALLIES AFTER TRUMP WINS US ELECTION
Luke Trevail, a currency exchange specialist at forex brokers TorFX, looks at the factors driving the pound’s exchange rate this week. This week, another shock took over the world markets and the pound, for once, has come out on top. Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States. The election has been widely reported on and the result has shocked many. Stock markets were losing heavily on Wednesday and look set to finish the week badly. How the world will look during Trump’s tenure remains to be seen, but much like Brexit this appears to be the result of the forgotten man finding his voice. The pen appears to be mightier than the sword, and the simple X in the box by mostly middle America has driven the result. The riots will stop soon and then the real work begins in January, when he’s officially sworn in. The currency markets were expecting a Clinton victory and the dollar lost around 2% immediately following the result. The rest of Wednesday was fairly subdued and the pound initially lost ground, falling to below €1.10 for the first time since earlier in October. The US Dollar is a safe haven currency. These deposits seem to have been ripped out of the US Bank’s clutch and investors are keen to place funds in somewhere more stable. It
appears, despite Brexit uncertainty that Sterling is able to roll back a couple of years and benefit from its own safe haven status. Wednesday afternoon we finished trading at €1.1380, a near four cent swing on the day. We have continued to gain as the week has progressed, and reached €1.1650 earlier before settling back a touch. The question that all of my clients have been asking is, ‘how high will it go?’ The answer remains the same, and that is that no one knows. For just a few days the attention has been away from the Brexit furore. Analysts are still suggesting that the pound will come back to close to parity and Prime Minister Theresa May stated on her trip to India this week that she still expects things to progress despite the High Court’s ruling that Parliament will vote on whether Article 50 will be triggered. As you can see, a huge amount of uncertainty continues with the volatile markets. For now, it’s an opportunity for you to take advantage. Don’t expect miracles however, they might be Trumped. by Mark Stücklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com

CATALONIA TO RAISE TAX ON HOLIDAY RENTALS
The Catalan Government is planning to raise the tax tourists pay when staying in a holiday rental, which owners have to collect and pass on. The Catalan Regional Government, known locally as the Generalitat, has tabled a budget amendment to raise the daily tariff tourists have to pay when staying in a holiday rental in Catalonia. The daily tourist tax rate will go up from €0.65/day to €2.25/day in Barcelona, an increase of 250%, though in the rest of Catalonia the tariff will only rise to €0.90/day. The planned increase means that tourists staying in a holiday rental apartment in Barcelona will pay the same daily tariff as someone staying in a 5-star hotel. Owners of second-homes in Catalonia who rent out their properties to tourists on a short-term basis are required to collect the tariff from tourists and pay it to the regional tax authorities, with sanctions for not doing so. Hotels are under the same obligation, but it is easier for them to manage. The Generalitat is hoping to raise an extra €180m a year from the tourist tax increase, which is expected to pass into law before the end of the year, and come into effect in April 2017. This proposal has the support of left-wing parties, so should pass without trouble. Increasing tax and bureaucracy is a fact of life in Spain, stifling business and economic growth. by Mark Stücklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com
PLACES TO VISIT IN CATALONIA
Bordered by the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, Catalonia is a traditional region of Spain that is fiercely proud of its unique culture. Barcelona is the most-visited destination. This colourful seaside city has an atmospheric medieval quarter, surprising avant-garde architecture, and a vibrant urban culture. Rivaling Barcelona in historic importance is Girona, with its fascinating multicultural heritage. Further afield, in the idyllic countryside of verdant valleys and gently rolling hills, tourists can discover quaint medieval towns, picturesque seaports, and quiet country villages where chirping birds and church bells are the loudest noises. For beach lovers, the Catalan coast delights sunworshippers with seaside destinations such as the upscale resort of Sitges and the secluded coves of Cadaqués. Every stop along the way, the local gastronomy will tempt visitors. Be sure to try local specialties like Esqueixada, a salad of peppers, tomatoes, and salt cod.
GIRONA, A SCREEN-FRIENDLY CITY
From the streets that appear in season six of ‘Game of Thrones’ to the scenes shot for ‘Perfume. The Story of a Murderer’, we take a tour of the most screenfriendly corners of Girona In the past few years, Girona has become a magnet for TV and film producers. One of the most recent media companies to fall under the spell of the city was HBO, which chose Girona to become one of the settings for the sixth season of the series ‘Game of Thrones’. The filming of the epically popular show took place in September 2015, revolutionising the city’s Barri Vell, where tourists and locals alike tried to get a peek behind the huge curtains put up to hide the set and avoid leaks about the future development of the programme. Join us on a tour of the spaces that witnessed members of the Lannister dynasty, descendants of Ned Stark and other ‘Thrones’ stars, as well as other Girona spots that have welcomed film crews.
CATHEDRAL
On the stairway of the Cathedral a ‘Thrones’ scene was filmed starring the character of Jamie Lannister – you saw the most multifaceted sibling of the Lannister household climb the famous steps on horseback. Even though it’s not yet been made public which territory of the show this section of the series belongs, we do know that Jamie Lannister (Nicolaj Coster-
Waldau) wasn’t alone. At the top, by the cathedral, Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) were waiting for him. This wasn’t the first time that Girona Cathedral had appealed to a production company. It was also used in the Spanish movies, ‘Agnosia’ (2010) and ‘The Monk’ (2011).
PUJADA DE SANT DOMÈNEC
During the filming of ‘Game of Thrones’, in this street of the Barri Vell, onlookers could see how Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) was jumping to escape from a woman who, at the time of writing, was an unknown character from the series. The stairs of Pujada de Sant Domènec have also been used in films to transport spectators to mysterious villages with a medieval air. The steps that lead to the church of Sant Martí are famous, above all, for a scene from the film ‘Perfume. The Story of a Murderer’ (2006), in which the protagonist kidnaps a red-headed prostitute.
LE BISTROT
Spanish director David Trueba also chose the Pujada de Sant Domènec for one of his films, but, in his case, he decided to film the site from the interior of the restaurant Le Bistrot, which is found on the right-hand side of the stairs.

In ‘Soldiers of Salamina’ (2003), Ariadna Gil listens to the story that is the basis of the film while sitting in one of the restaurant’s chairs – it was the same one where writer Javier Cercas was himself when he discovered the facts that he would later convert into a novel and then this film about fugitive soldiers during the Spanish Civil War.
CINEMA TRUFFAUT
Pujada de Sant Domènec
The Truffaut is much more than an original version cinema, but this double life is not known to many. The floor above the one where the projection room is has had its own cinematographic uses, but for filming rather than screening movies. In ‘La lapidación de Saint Étienne’ (‘The Lapidation of Saint Etienne’, 2012), the venue was converted into the apartment of the protagonist, an elderly man who the owner of the building wanted to throw out. Catalan director and Girona native Isaki Lacuesta was also drawn to this part of the Truffaut, which he used to film parts of the black comedy ‘Murieron por encima de sus posibilidades’ (‘Dying Beyond Their Means’, 2014).
ESGLÉSIA DE SANT FÈLIX
Surely no tourist has ever left Girona without taking a photo from the bridges that cross the river Onyar, with the houses on the riverbank reflected in the water and the Cathedral in the background. People familiar with the city know that the bell tower of the church of Sant Feliu usually also appears in these images, even if it’s at a distance and almost hidden. Despite being almost constantly in the shadows for most visitors to Girona, for Barcelona film-maker Mar Coll it was the ideal location for shooting the funeral in ‘Tres dies amb la família’ (‘Three Days with the Family’, 2009). In that film, the church of Sant Feliu takes on a key role, with both its exterior and interior appearing.
PONT DE LA PRINCESA (AKA D’EN GÓMEZ)
Whether you’re exploring the city alone or in company, the Bridge of the Princess (also known as the Bridge of Gómez) deserves a visit. Compared to the strident red colour of the Bridge of the Red Levers (Pont de les Palanques Vermelles, better known to everyone as the Bridge of the Old Fishmongers or the Bridge of Eiffel, after its designer), the Gómez bridge is much simpler, but just as charming. In fact, it was here that Mario Casas and Clara Lago acted out one of the most romantic scenes from the film ‘Tengo ganas de ti’ (‘I Want You’, 2012). Under the light of the stars, Casas’s character attaches a lock to the bridge, then throws the key into the river as a symbol of his eternal love. It’s worth contemplating the Onyar from this bridge even though there’s no point in going to the ironmongers first – for some years now, the local council has removed any locks that lovers leave on the bridge.

IVA AND INCOME TAX WILL NOT INCREASE TO MEET EU DEFICIT TARGET
INCOME tax and value-added tax (IVA) will not go up next year in Spain, despite Brussels calling for further fiscal pressure to reduce the country's debt in order to meet its annual target. Secretary of State for the treasury, José Enrique Fernández de Moya, insists Spain will be able to bring about a 'fiscal consolidation' to please the European Parliament without touching the main taxes that affect ordinary residents – IRPF (income tax) and IVA. He says 'thanks to the improvement seen in the national economy', the treasury is now earning more money and is able to keep taxes where they are now. For the self-employed, this means retentions of 15% of all earnings from the first cent, adjusted quarterly or, where all income is subject to retentions at source, annually. Different rates apply to those employed by a firm on a contract. IVA is currently 21%, with 'reduced' rates at 10% for certain products and 'superreduced' for basics, such as bread and eggs, at 4%. The European Commission calculates Spain will have to reduce its outgoings by around €7.7 billion in 2017 to reach its deficit target of 3.1% of the GDP by the end of the year. For 2016, Spain was required to reduce its debt to 4.2% of the GDP, but will close the year on 5%, meaning it was technically subject to a fine to the tune of €2bn and 50% of its funding for 2017 withheld. But Brussels has decided not to apply either,
based upon its view that Spain is 'trying hard' to meet its targets. The EU believes if Spain does not manage to claw back another €7.7bn, its debt will end 2017 on 3.8% of the GDP, once again over budget and at risk of fines and funds being kept back. As well as increasing company tax on profits – currently around 25% - the government has launched 'an ambitious package' of measures to combat fraud, which it hopes will bring in more cash. Fernández de Moya assures whatever the PP government decides to do with regards to taxes 'will be discussed with' all other political forces and 'seek their consensus'. But in practice, the PP does not have any choice in this respect, given that it is governing in a minority and collective dissent from the opposing PSOE, Podemos and Ciudadanos is sufficient to shout down any unpopular planned policies. Meanwhile, Ciudadanos' leader Albert Rivera has ordered the PP not to reduce funding in education, welfare, health or any social programmes in the 2017 budget and says his party will not support them if they do. Ciudadanos' vote was key to the PP getting back into power and was conditional upon the right-wing government agreeing to 150 reform measures in every area of policy. The PP knows if it does not comply with Ciudadanos' wishes, it would withdraw its support and leave the PP vulnerable to a no-confidence vote ousting it from government. thinkspain

SPAIN UPS GROWTH FORECAST FOR 2016, 2017
Spain’s economy minister on Wednesday upped growth forecasts for this year and the next, in a sign that a 10-month political impasse had limited effect on the economy. Luis de Guindos told reporters Spain’s economy was expected to grow 3.2 percent this year -- well above the eurozone average -- and 2.5 percent in 2017, compared to the respective 2.9 and 2.3 percent put forward previously. The European Commission had already said that the economy would grow 3.2 percent this year, but their prediction for 2017 was lower at 2.3 percent. “Spain will submit its (2017) budget plans to Brussels in the coming weeks,” de Guindos added, saying the new growth forecasts would be included in these, as would the creation of “around 500,000 jobs”. The revised predictions come just weeks after Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took power again following a 10-month period of political limbo marked by two inconclusive elections. But this period of instability appears not to have inflicted too much damage on the economy, as Spain has benefited from a drop in the prices of petrol and interest rates and the depreciation of the euro. The central bank, though, warns that these may all rise again next year, and that household and company spending, as well as exports, could dwindle. The government also has to take measures against its deficit, which it is trying to bring down to a limit set by the European Union of three percent of GDP. Under EU scrutiny, Spain must reduce its deficit to 4.6 percent of its GDP this year, and 3.1 percent in 2017. It is estimated Spain needs to save 5.5 billion euros ($5.9 billion) to bring the deficit down to 3.1 percent, but it is unclear as of yet how the government will do this -- whether through spending cuts or tax rises, all of which would be unpopular. expatica

LA PARED
Alqueria’s borders are under siege. Prospective immigrants from a certain north American country are queuing, begging for asylum. They tell terrible stories of the first of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping into view and taking control of their country. They fear for the future, some do not believe they even have a future. Many entered before the authorities could act. They tried to impose their strange and foreign customs on the quiet, friendly folk of Alqueria. Strange food called hot-dogs and hamburgers appeared. Alquerians examined this fare with suspicion They could think of many things to do with it but eating the things wasn’t one of them. They brought their own entertainment. DVDs full of endless episodes involving sanitised teenagers trying desperately to look cute and propounding a sickening sentimentality which they expecting the folk of Alqueria to embrace and couldn’t understand their reluctance to sit for hours watching the drivel. The very essence of the Alquerian character was at stake. Manuela, Loco Paco, Antonio poyato and Rodriquez where for the first time in Alquerian

history as one. They stood firm to face this tidal wave of foreigners besieging their borders. They differed regarding the solution. Manuela suggested a way of testing the male contingent of would be immigrants, but this was thought to be counter production and would probably make Alqueria even more attractive. Poyato suggested paying them to settle in Australia, Rodriquez was for intergalactic deportation and Loco Paco thought is was Easter Sunday. After much debate however, a wall was decided upon. Manuela was given charge of its construction and ended up with a two foot high picket fence with plenty of flowers. It was a joy to behold but completely useless as an instrument of demarcation. Once more our dynamic quartet put their heads together, this has sometimes been known to cause a fire but on this occasion they came up with the idea of a ‘Test of Suitability’. The potential settlers from across the ‘Pond’ would be asked to spend three minutes in original thought and to write that thought down, in legible and joinedup ‘big person’ writing. The task was beyond them. All thoughts were plagiarists form popular TV programs. The entire population of this particular country from across the ‘Pond’ appear to live their lives by proxy. The whole country thought they were in a ‘soap opera’, judging by recent events a nightmare is possibly a better description. All events and characters depicted in Alqueria are completely fictitious, honest.
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
Frank Sinatra many years ago recorded the words “It’s very nice to go trav’ling to Paris, London and Rome. It’s oh so nice to go trav’ling but it’s so much nicer, yes it’s so much nicer, to come home.” And having just returned from a very enjoyable holiday in Malta and Gozo, I find myself utterly agreeing with the words of that song. Yes the holiday away from all the necessary Rebuilding and Maintenance, in such friendly islands was a wonderful relaxation, but I couldn’t wait to get back, to get the cement mixer out and crack on. For there’s something really special about home isn’t there? It’s where we can truly relax and be ourselves. And what better place than here in Spain; so yes, echoing those words, I found it very nice to go travelling, but so much nicer to come home. And to a large extent that’s how I as a Christian feel about the season of Advent, which starts this coming Sunday. True, Advent heralds the coming of Christmas, reminding us of the preparations we have yet to do and presents we need to buy in readiness for that great celebration of the birth of Jesus. But far more, Advent, celebrating as it does the anticipated return of that same Jesus as sovereign Lord of all, is intended to remind us that however much we may be enjoying
our time here on Earth, our real home is in heaven. And one of the great benefits of this is the realisation that all the suffering and anguish we and others may endure, is but temporary; that political decisions, however shocking they may seem, are but a part of our journey, which will in time come to an end. So in this season of Advent, along with all the preparation for Christmas I find it helpful to remind myself of the temporal nature of my time here, and that however much I may be enjoying the journey, it really will be so much nicer to go home. ONE OF THOSE DAYS #2
As we passed down the Breakfast Goods aisle in Iceland the phone vocalized. ‘Your husband must go to hospital on Monday week.’ The disembodied voice requested. Hospital appointments take precedent over garage appointments, so I said ‘Vale.’ (The conversation was in Spanish), but how were we going to tell Henry that his service was going to be delayed in favour of a mere human? Without mentioning it to him we returned to Renault and rescheduled his service. So now all was fine? Well, yes, until we decided to put Henry through the car wash on the way home. I went to pay for and procure a card with 10€, causing Chica #2 to have a nervous breakdown because they were out of change. Fortunately Chica #1 came to her rescue by taking 6€ out of the bar till and giving it to me before returning to the car and worried owner who were occupying the wash gantry waiting for her to explain how it all worked. Meanwhile Chica #2, still partially in meltdown, opened the card drawer only to find it was bare – she must have known exactly how Mother Hubbard felt. However, this crisis she could handle – Without faltering she sped over to the car wash, disembodied it, extracted a whole handful of cards, handed me one, braced herself for the next disaster that would doubtless befall her (She was having One of Those Days) and returned to her office. We waited. Both manual

washersplus the automatic one were going full tilt when the phone tried to make itself heard over the racket. ‘Steve here. What’s the password for your laptop?’ This was Steve the Computer Wrangler’s first call. Steve’s second call was ‘What is your email password.’ Not so easy – in trying to outsmart the laptop Pete had had to create dozens of accounts, so we took a wild guess. Steve’s third call suggested tactfully that it would be easiest to delete them all and start again. Steve’s fourth call warned us that a message with a verification code was on its way, and we were to call him to tell him what it was. The message came, all 6 figures of it. I remembered the first 3, Pete memorised the second 3, and we rang Steve. Minutes later, just as we pulled into our driveway Steve rang. ‘Laptop’s ready.’ We fetched it, paid Steve a pittance, took a deep breath and relaxed. All was fine. At last!
ENCHANTING SPAIN - OUT NOW
From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. SOL TIMES SEASONAL MENU LEEK
Like garlic and onion, leeks are a member of the allium family, but have their own distinct flavour - quite harsh when raw (only very young leeks are eaten this way) but, when cooked, very delicate, like a mild onion but with a hint of sweetness. Two thirds of their length is white and firm, and this is the part that is mainly eaten. The rest of the third is made up of the leaves (flags), most of which is discarded. Leeks are very versatile and work well cooked in various recipes or as a side dish. Two of the world’s most famous soups, Scotland’s cock-a-leekie and France’s crème vichyssoise, are based around them. AVAILABILITY All year round, but at their best from September to March. CHOOSE THE BEST Look for leeks with a firm, unblemished white lower part, and leaves that are bright green, with a crisp texture. Smaller leeks tend to be sweeter and more tender. HISTORY Leeks enjoy a long and rich history, one
that can trace its heritage back through antiquity. Thought to be native to Central Asia, they have been cultivated in this region and in Europe for thousands of years. Leeks were prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans and were especially revered for their beneficial effect upon the throat. The Greek philosopher Aristotle credited the clear voice of the partridge to a diet of leeks, while the Roman emperor Nero supposedly ate leeks everyday to make his voice stronger. The Romans are thought to have introduced leeks to the United Kingdom, where they were able to flourish because they could withstand cold weather. Leeks have attained an esteemed status in Wales, where they serve as this country’s national emblem. The Welsh regard for leeks can be traced back to a battle that they successfully won against that Saxons in 1620, during which the Welsh soldiers placed leeks in their caps to differentiate themselves from their opponents. Today, leeks are an important vegetable in many northern European cuisines and are grown in many European countries.

TRADITIONAL NORTHUMBRIAN LEEK PUDDING INGREDIENTS 225gms SR flour 100gms suet (I use vegetable low fat suet) 50grams butter Salt and Black Pepper 2 leeks finely chopped
METHOD
Put flour into a bowl, rub in butter and mix in the suet. Add the finely chopped, raw leeks. Slowly add water and mix together to form a light dough that just holds together. Traditionally this is then placed in a pudding basin and covered with grease proof paper. A muslin cloth is then placed over the basin and tied firmly with string around under the lip of the basin. The basin is then placed in a saucepan filled with water, bring to the boil, then simmer for 2 hours. Ensure that the water when boiling, does not overflow into the basin. Keep checking the level of the water,

topping up when necessary. An alternative to mixing the leeks into the pudding is to make the suet pastry without the leeks, use the pastry to line the basin, place the leeks in the centre and place more suet pastry on top to form a lid. Some families did not cook their pudding in a basin but wrapped the whole pudding in a muslin cloth, allowing space for expansion and cooked it in a pan of water. A modern alternative is to make individual leek puddings. The mixture will make 4 to 6. Use ramekins or mini-pudding basins. These only take about 30 minutes to cook. http://helloecoliving.com/
Prep: 20min › Cook: 30min › Ready in: 50min Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Boil some water in a medium pan and boil spinach for 2 minutes until soft. Drain off any excess water. Whilst spinach is draining, heat olive oil in a pan over medium high heat and add the chopped leek, red onion and courgette; cook until soft, normally about 4
minutes. Beat the 3 large eggs in a separate bowl and add the leek, red onion, courgette and spinach and mix. Add cheese and mix once more. Pour the mixture into a suitable baking tin or dish and cook in the preheated oven until brown on top and until middle is clean when poked with a knife. Serve with a cold crispy salad hot or cold! http://allrecipes.co.uk/

RESTAURANT SUED BY MAN WHO SAID BURRITO MADE HIM FEEL ‘EXCESSIVELY FULL’ A man is suing a Mexican fast food chain after he complained of feeling “excessively full” after eating a burrito. David Desmond bought the meal from a branch of Chipotle in Los Angeles, thinking it was one of the healthier options. But after tucking into the spicy treat, Mr Desmond felt stuffed to the brim and concluded that it “couldn’t have been just 300 calories”, according to My LA. Now Mr Desmond – along with Edward Gurevich and Young Hoon Kim – have launched a lawsuit against the company claiming false advertising. Each complainant bought their burritos in separate Chipotle branches across Los Angeles. The suit alleges that “consumers are lulled into a false belief that the items they are eating are healthier than they really are”. It also claims that nutritional information in the Chipotle website
F O K L A T N W O T E H T contains misleading information about several products. The three men are seeking unspecified damages and an injunction preventing Chipotle from putting allegedly misleading information about the nutritional value of its products on its menu boards, website and marketing campaigns. uk.news.yahoo.com

BAKE OFF WINNER CANDICE QUITS TEACHING JOB AS SHE IS TOLD TO ‘INSPIRE PUPILS’
The Great British Bake Off star Candice Brown has finally decided to put her teaching job on hold - after originally going back to work. The 31-year-old, who beat Jane Beedle and Andrew Smyth to win this year’s hit final, shocked pupils when she returned to her post. But she has now made the “agonising” decision to put her job as a teacher on hold to pursue a career in baking. Brown said she had discovered over the past few weeks that trying to juggle her day job - which involves working with children with special needs - with new
November 2016
commitments was too difficult. But Brown, who also teaches PE, said she could not have made the jump had it not been for the support of staff at Ashlyns School in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. Brown, whose last day at the secondary school was on Friday, admitted: “This has been such an agonising decision to make. Never in a million years did I ever go into the show thinking this would happen. That is why I have been back at school teaching since I won the final. “I have been teaching for about eight years now and I love it. But since winning the final, I have also been completely bowled over by the amazing opportunities that I have been offered. “At first, I kept telling the school I would stay until December but they were so incredible and told me I
had to grab everything whilst I could.” Brown said her school suggested she leave now, rather than at the end of this year, and that doing so would inspire the school’s pupils to follow their dreams. The Bake Off winner said: “My headteacher told me: ‘You’ve got to do this, you can’t do it half-heartedly. I wouldn’t forgive myself if you missed out. It’s not that we don’t want you here but you have to give it 100%. If we can’t encourage our staff to follow their dreams and inspire, then we are not doing our job properly. You are showing the kids that anything is possible.’” Brown added: “It was so incredibly lovely of him to say this.” She said that it was very emotional saying a fond farewell to her pupils and fellow staff at the end of last week. belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Funny 7 Health Benefits of Laughter Informative Speech Topics That'll Make You Cringe and Laugh Coming up with topics that are informative, as well as funny is not a very difficult task. Just look around you; you are likely to find humor in almost everything. In any case, if you are having trouble, this Buzzle article lists out a few funny and humorous informative speech topics. Contrary to popular belief, being funny is no easy task. The term 'funny' is in fact too broad, and most of the time, the focus usually is on being witty. While your attempts at being funny and witty in front of your friends may be acceptable, being funny in front of a whole crowd may not go as planned. To be able to charm a wide audience, and deliver something that every one of them will find funny is a real art. Fortunately, it is also something that can be mastered with exposure to various types of humor, and some practice. If you need to find a list of funny informative speech topics, you can choose absolutely any, because any situation can be looked at with a humorous approach. So, here's a list of some topics that you can work on and have your audience in splits. Giving a funny speech can be considered to be a kind of a stand-up act. With you looking for humor in things people couldn't possibly imagine, it is bound to be a fun event. However, do remember that it has to last for the specified amount of time, make sense, and even present facts (that you can later question or make fun of). While the topic is required to be informative, it is not really necessary that this information may be valuable. For instance, you could talk about funny ways in which an excuse may be provided for always being late, or how being lazy is actually a smart move. So, are those creative juices flowing yet? Still need a little push? Here's a list of some topics that will get those wheels turning. ٠ Things you can learn from your pet ٠ How to choose your friends ٠ How procrastinating is a lot of hard work ٠ Why men think being a woman is more advantageous, and vice versa ٠ How equal are 'equal rights' ٠ How not to give a funny speech ٠ The benefits of a virtual life versus real life ٠ How to drive a stalker away ٠ What babies understand from baby talk ٠ The transition of a man to a husband and a father ٠ What women say and what they actually mean ٠ What men say and what they actually mean ٠ How to survive a blind date gone wrong ٠ How to deal with the economic recession ٠ Why patience is not really a virtue ٠ Keeping up with a boring conversation at a party ٠ How to look attentive when you are actually not ٠ How to enjoy your meeting with the president ٠ The democracy of the English language (Discussion on the list of newly included words in Oxford dictionary) ٠ The fuss about size zero ٠ Excuses beyond 'the dog ate my homework' ٠ Your version of the 'I have a dream...' speech ٠ How to prepare for and perform the 'First Dance' ٠ How to impress your in-laws ٠ Why being a millionaire is not for everyone Obviously, each of these topics requires you to present your take on them. That is what will prove your sense of humor, wit, and intelligence. Feel free to infuse some sarcasm into the speech to truly bring out its essence. As you can see, humor can be infused into almost any subject. A lighter take on serious questions, or questions that make you wonder is a great way to elicit a good laugh from a huge crowd. One of the best feelings in the world is the deep-rooted belly laugh. It can bring people together and establish amazing connections. Everything from a slight giggle to a side-splitting guffaw can change the temperature of a room from chilly unfamiliarity to a warm familylike atmosphere. There is already so much to love for laughter that it seems greedy to look for more, but that’s exactly what researchers Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan at the Loma Linda University in California have done. These two doctors have researched the benefits of laughter and found amazing results. Get ready to get your giggle on! 1. LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE People who lower their blood pressure, even those who start at normal levels, will reduce their risk of stroke and heart attack. So grab the Sunday paper, flip to the funny pages, and enjoy your laughter medicine. 2. REDUCES STRESS HORMONE LEVELS By reducing the level of stress hormones, you’re simultaneously cutting the anxiety and stress that impacts your body. Additionally, the reduction of stress hormones may result in higher immune system performance. Just think: Laughing along as a co-worker tells a funny joke can relieve some of the day’s stress and help you reap the health benefits of laughter. 3. WORKS YOUR ABS One of the benefits of laughter is that it can help you tone your abs. When you are laughing, the muscles in your stomach expand and contract, similar to when you intentionally exercise your abs. Meanwhile, the muscles you are not using to laugh are getting an opportunity to relax. Add laughter to your ab routine and make getting a toned tummy more enjoyable. 4. IMPROVES CARDIAC HEALTH Laughter is a great cardio workout, especially for those who are incapable of doing other physical activity due to injury or illness. It gets your heart pumping and burns a similar amount of calories per hour as walking at a slow to moderate pace. So, laugh your heart into health. 5. BOOSTS T-CELLS T-cells are specialized immune system cells just waiting in your body for activation. When you laugh, you activate T-cells that immediately begin to help you fight off sickness. Next time you feel a cold coming on, add chuckling to your illness prevention plan. 6. TRIGGERS THE RELEASE OF ENDORPHINS Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers. By laughing, you can release endorphins, which can help ease chronic pain and make you feel good all over. 7. PRODUCES A GENERAL SENSE OF WELL-BEING Laughter can increase your overall sense of well-being. Doctors have found that people who have a positive outlook on life tend to fight diseases better than people who tend to be more negative. So smile, laugh, and live longer! http://www.gaiam.com

Strictly Week 9 By Lyn Aspden of 'Strictly Dance'
Class Info 635584431 With only 7 couples remaining and the big week at Blackpool Tower the pressure is really starting to build. With a superb opening number involving all the celebrities, professional dancers and the judges to 'One Singular Sensation' it promised to be a show stopper of a week. Opening the show were Claudia Fragapane and AJ with a Jive. This was a high energy, fast and furious performance to 'Mickey'. Claudia looked as if her legs were about to take off with the kicks and flicks but I did feel she was struggling a bit with the sheer speed and her basic was a bit too flat when it was shown. I awarded her 8 and the judges 36. Next to dance were Ore Oduba and Joanne with a Viennese Waltz to 'That's Life'. For me this performance was too staccato lacking the smooth gliding movement and with his bottom stuck out he had slipped back for me. The judges however, saw it otherwise and awarded him 38 where I awarded an 8 together with Craig. Ore has been consistently overmarked and I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that both Kevin and Joanne Clifton's godfather is Len Goodman! (I'll say no more!) Louise Redknapp and Kevin then danced a Paso Doble. This was a very unusual piece of music which created a great atmosphere and some great
speed high impact to 'Putting on the Ritz'. It was difficult yet again to find the professional in this performance with Danny's laid back style which was packed full of difficult tricks and superb Charleston swivel. A deserved 10 and the first full house of the season from the judges 40. Ed Balls and Katya and a Jive were next to 'Great Balls of Fire' Another entertaining performance however, despite some good basic steps and a few comedy moments I feel that it is now his time to go. I gave him 7 and the judges 23.
Next were Greg Rutherford and Natalie with a Quickstep performed to Hand Jive. This was his best performance to date, a well controlled dance through which he managed to retain his frame despite the speed. He looked as if he was leading all the way, that said he still needs to pay attention to his feet which are still sickled most of the time. I gave him 8 and the judges 32. Closing this week’s show were Judge Rinder and Oksana with a Salsa. 'Spice up your Life' was the flavour and I have to say this was one of the best salsas I've seen from any celebrity. Probably because Oksana was a World Salsa Champion so gone was the stiff legged basic action and in came relaxed knees and super use of hips throughout coupled with some great lifts and armography. I awarded him 9 and the judges 33. The bottom two this week were Claudia and Greg with Greg leaving the show after the dance off and the judges unanimous vote. So with only 6 couples remaining and not too long before the final the heat is on. I still have Danny for my winner who is your winner? Come and join our classes to keep up with hints and tips from the strictly gossip, but until next week Keep Dancing!

WORLD NUMBER ONE ANDY MURRAY SWITCHES FOCUS TO ADDING TO GRAND SLAM COLLECTION
Andy Murray set his sights on adding to his three Grand Slam titles after securing the year-end number one ranking with victory at the ATP World Tour Finals. The Briton, 29, beat Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-4 in London to ensure he will stay ahead of the Serb heading into 2017. "Now that I've got there, I obviously would be motivated to try and stay in that position," said Murray. "But the majors get me working hard - they really, really motivate me." Murray, 29, won his third major title at Wimbledon in July, and ended the year on a 24-match winning streak that culminated with victory over Djokovic at the O2 Arena. He will now take a break, including attending his father Willie's stag do, before turning his attention to the new season and the Australian Open. Djokovic is a six-time champion in Melbourne and has beaten Murray in four of the five finals the Scot has lost there. "When I go away in December to train, I'm training with the Australian Open in mind," said Murray. "Because of the best-of-five-set matches, they're the
ones you have to really put in the extra work for and the extra training for. That's what motivates
me." With the year-end number one ranking on the line, and having a 24-10 losing record against Djokovic, Sunday's victory at the O2 Arena was especially significant. "It was obviously a big, big match against someone who I've played so many big matches against in my career, that would be my main rival really throughout my career," said Murray. "We've played in all of the Slam finals, Olympics, obviously here now, and a match to finish the year number one. It was a very important win for me." Djokovic, 29, has suffered a slump in form since completing the career Grand Slam by beating Murray at the French Open in June, and was below his best again on Sunday. "There was no serious chance for me to win today's match," said the Serb. "From the very beginning we could see that. He was just a better player all in all. It just wasn't my day. "On the other hand, credit to Andy for being mentally tough and playing the right shots, making me play extra shots in every rally. He definitely deserved to win."

His wife has to get some credit, guys. She gave birth this year Novak Djokovic on Kim Murray And Djokovic paid tribute to Murray's wife Kim, who gave birth to their daughter Sophia in February. "We should all let Andy enjoy this a little bit," he said. "Don't ask him questions about next season. He deserves to be in the moment and to really take everything in that he achieved. "His team as well, and his wife. She has to get some credit, guys. She gave birth this year. He has travelled all over the place. "I know how it is with my wife Jelena, what she had to go through as a mother back home with a little baby. "So, Kim, well done. She's maybe made even a bigger effort than Andy." Bbc.com
DAYA NUEVA 5 V. U.D. ASPENSE 0
Daya win a very physical contest Daya had the perfect start when in the second minute they won a corner. Alex took the kick, it was a great ball in, that the visitors just could not defend allowing Franky to steer the ball home for Daya's opening goal. On ten minutes Daya's great start got even better when a quick counter attack ended with a fierce shot that flew in from Rocamora for Daya's second goal. It should have been three on fifteen minutes when a great cross from the left saw a home side forward completely miss cue what really was an easy chance! It was all Daya now and surely more goals would follow. To be fair to Aspense they did raise their game as the half wore on but were the home side becoming just a little too complacent with their two goal lead? On thirty four minutes the visitors rattled the Daya crossbar with the rebound being blasted high and wide. Jaime in the Daya goal produced a great save as the half drew to a close to preserve Daya's two goal lead. So 2-0 at the break with the home side well worth their lead. The visitors started the second half like an express train and on forty e i g h t minutes Jaime had to make a fantastic point blank save low

down. Aspense were now playing a very physical game and the referee was struggling to keep control of the match with all the fouls being committed. On sixty minutes Daya produced a great run and cross down the right that was almost connected with for what would have been a superb third goal. The physical play by the visitors saw the red card given to their number seventeen on sixty one minutes. On sixty three minutes the home side scored their third, after yet another good move and that was surely the points in the bag. The red card seemed to have taken the sting out of the visitors game and with a man advantage Daya were now fully in control. It became even worse for Aspense as yet another bad tackle saw a second red card issued on seventy two minutes. There was very little now from the visitors and on eighty minutes Sienna scored the fourth goal. Cuco added the fifth and final goal with virtually the last move of the game. It had been a very brutal game that the visitors had embarked upon. They gave away so many free kicks and with the two red cards left themselves no chance of ever beating a well organised side that Coach, Jesus, had sent out today. For my man of the match it has to go to the referee who somehow managed to keep the lid on a very physical contest. Daya Dave, Team Sponsor : Segurlab

SMGS VISITS ALTORREAL
Nearly forty of us took on what for many members was a near 2 hour round trip to sample the delights of a course that has always been on our circuit but less so over the past few years. The recent new owners tempted us with a very attractive deal which included the use of their new buggy fleet. Altorreal sits on the far side of Murcia and has always been, like so many other courses, a little tricky to find, so the intensive heavy road works in the vicinity added a little to the difficulty. Once at our destination it became evident that the new owners were using a little more than a “new broom” on their acquisition with improvement work underway in several places. Top score of the day was a mere 34 with the vast majority not even reaching the 30’s which emphasizes the tough conditions, but the weather certainly couldn’t be blamed as it was a warm, sunny November day. The “curse of our courses” in this part of the world is crowned holes and here was no exception, each one needed a good thump with a huge, flat shovel – as did the guy who cut them without using a board to keep the surrounding ground level. 3 shots to get on the green followed by 3 putts was a common complaint. As if this game isn’t tough enough, many of the fairways have been reduced in width by allowing the “first cut” to encroach in strategic places.....that’s fair enough to add a subtle degree of difficulty but you don’t have to set the mowers to just a millimetre or two deeper than a golf ball. On many an occasion a good drive could be severely punished if it rolled off the fairway into the first cut never to be seen again, unless you were lucky enough to spot it from directly above!
Anyway, it was a very enjoyable day and before we get branded as the VMGS (Victor Meldrew Golf Society) I must say what lovely beer is served in the clubhouse.... lovely, but a bit expensive!! Best guest was Gary Garbett with a respectable 31 and “Nearest the Pins” on the par 3’s went to Norman Cahill, Steve Fleet, Steve Higgins and Eva Pettersson. The prize-winners in the bronze category were: 5th– Norman McBride 26, 4th– Keith Stevenson 26 (C/B), 3rd– Kyrre Skarsmoen 27, 2nd– Chris Hamblett 30, 1st Brian Mulligan 34. The prize-winners in the silver category were: 5th– Norman Cahill 30, 4th-Keith Wickham 32, 3rd Phil de Lacy 33, 2nd – Hugh Reilly 34, 1st – Ken Flaherty 34 (C/B). The prize-winners in the gold category were: 5th– Tony Smale 29, 4th – John Osborne 29 (C/B), 3rd – Theo Boelhouwer 30, 2nd – Eva Pettersson 31, 1st – John Aitchinson 32. Our thanks go to the staff at Altoreal golf course for their contribution to the day.

MAZARRON FC 0 CF MOLINA 0
Mazarron made the early running and in the third minute Jimmy’s cross from the left was dropped by the Molina keeper but Cesar could only shoot into the side netting from the rebound.. Two minutes later Boudia’s shot from 25 yards was only parried to Jimmy who shot just over the bar. Molina came more into the game and former Mazarron striker Jose had a couple of half chances before the visitors missed a great chance to take the lead after 20 minutes. An excellent cross from the left was somehow headed wide by Galo from almost on the goal line.
On 27 minutes a through ball by Raul Torrano was well controlled by Jimmy who swivelled and hit a right foot shot against the post and out for a goal kick. At the other end Mazarron keeper Pablo dropped a right wing corner but the defenders managed to clear the ball after a goalmouth scramble. Both teams continued to attack in search of an opening goal but the interval arrived with the score at 0-0. Mazarron thought they should have had a penalty five minutes into the second half when Cesar appeared to be dragged to the ground but the referee waved play on. A minute later Javier headed over the bar for Molina and then a Mazarron breakaway saw Ruben try a speculative
37
shot from 25 yards with Raul Jimmy and Cesar better placed to receive a pass. On 57 minutes an excellent pass by Ruben saw Cesar cutting in from the left but his shot was saved by the Molina keeper. Mazarron came close to breaking the deadlock on 65 minutes when a long cross from the half way line was headed down by Raul and Cesar’s shot was deflected onto the bar before being headed clear for a corner. Despite creating a number of chances it was 87 minutes before Molina were able to force Pablo into making a save and he was more than equal to it diving superbly to his left. Then in injury time a miskick by Raso saw a grateful Pablo drop on to the ball under pressure from the Molina attack. It was an entertaining game and, on the balance of play, a draw was a fair result. Team: Pablo; Raul Torrano; Raso; Juan Andreo; Marcos; Boudia; Ruben (Mariano); Koko; Cesar (Steven); Raul; Jimmy. PENULTIMATE SAMM RACE DAY
Remembrance Sunday was the date of the penultimate race day of the SAMM Autumn 2016 season and those attending observed a minutes silence to honour all those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy our current life style. Seven boats entered but the start was delayed to 12.15pm when the support boat engine would not start and the old rib had to be forced into service. The resulting disruption saw only one boat make the start on time as the wind had died away as the morning progressed to less than 3 knots. The slow pace forced the Race Officer to shorten the race to just one lap which took between 1 and 11/2 hours for all boats to complete. The wind had increased to 5 knots when the second race started, still making for a slow pace but making two laps possible with boats finishing in between 41 minutes and 11/4
hours. Unless he made a drastic tactical error, the low wind speed foretold another two wins for Don Clark in his Hartley 12.2 and this proved the case as he won with a margin of over 300 seconds in both races. But there were some close battles and finishing time differences between many of the other boats. As on the previous race day, Mistral was still not sailing well and still need checking for rigging or other problems. Final results were Race 1. First Hartley 12.2, second Shoestring Cuatro, third RS Quba. Race 2. First Hartley 12.2, second RS Quba, third Shoestring Cuatro Interested in sailing? Then have a look at our web site www. sailingmarmenor.com check out the various options and contact us for more information.
