Green light for homes
Orihuela Council has approved a licence to build 144 new homes in Orihuela Costa, specifically on Calle Verbena de la Paloma on the corner with Luisa Fernanda, near Villamartín Golf Club. Council spokesman Rafael Almagro said the houses will have a basement, garage and swimming pool. The project is in addition to dozens of others that
have been approved by the council in the last year. Orihuela Costa Continues to lead the number of constructions in Alicante province and at a national level, and even though the demand there never fell as much as the rest of the country during the worst years of the economic crisis, now it is bouncing back, according to sources in the sector.
The Official College of Quantity Surveyors, Technical Architects and Building Engineers of Alicante has revealed the construction data from 2016. According to its latest report, in 2015 980 homes were approved in Orihuela Costa, which is the largest number of property investments in Spain.

Threat To Crops
The rain in Southern Spain has wiped out vast areas of salad crops threatening a shortage in Britain in the New Year. The Murcia region has seen the heaviest rainfall for 30 years, swamping fields. The rain in Spain has wiped out vast areas of salad crops threatening a shortage in Britain in the New Year. The Murcia region has seen the
heaviest rainfall for 30 years, swamping fields. Some fields have been reduced to 30 per cent capacity after receiving 150 to 250 litres of water per square metre, according to the Leafy Salad Growers’ Association. A spokesman said ‘These have been among the worst downpours we have seen since these farms were established in the 1980s.
Spanish banks must repay customers more than 4 billion euros (3.9 billion pounds) after Europe’s top court overturned on Wednesday a Spanish ruling that capped liabilities relating to a disputed mortgage clause, posing a new challenge to some lenders. Banks will have to compensate customers for what they lost even before May 2013, when Spain’s Supreme Court declared the mortgages invalid if the terms had not been presented clearly. The home loans had an interest rate that could not fall below a certain level meaning customers missed out when rates dropped beneath this level. New charges resulting from Wednesday’s ruling by the European Court of Justice could eat into bank earnings, which have already been eroded by record low interest rates and fierce competition for a shrunken loan pool, and encourage more mergers. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos told reporters on Wednesday the country’s financial system was healthy and could deal with the consequences of the ruling. Banco Popular (POP.MC), the sector’s weak link and seen as a potential takeover target, faces about 330 million euros in new charges. Its shares led losses among Spanish banks, falling 6 percent to 0.954 euros. The ruling also knocked shares in Banco Sabadell (SABE.MC), Caixabank, BBVA and Liberbank (LBK.MC) - the banks most exposed to the “floor clauses,” which were introduced as a safety net during the financial crisis. BBVA (BBVA.MC) and Caixabank (CABK.MC) have said it could cost them 1.2 billion euros and 750 million euros respectively. Most Spanish banks have removed the clauses from their mortgage products since the 2013 Spanish court ruling and already set aside money to cover compensation of around 5 billion euros that the court ruled had been incorrectly charged. A Bank of Spain source said this could have an additional impact of “slightly
more” than 4 billion euros on the country’s banks, in line with analysts’ predictions. Analysts expect an average hit of around 30 basis points on capital ratios. NO APPEAL The ruling, unexpected by the banks, is final and cannot be appealed against, an EU court spokeswoman said. The case first arose after several Spaniards said that banks had hidden the floor clauses in their mortgage contracts. The ECJ ruling could now open the door to 2 million others seeking repayment from banks, consumer lobby group Adicae said. “It follows that national case law, such as that following from the judgement of 9 May 2013 ... ensures only limited protection for consumers,” the ECJ said in its written ruling. “Such protection is therefore incomplete and insufficient.” In response to the ruling, the Spanish banking association said banks were open to renegotiating with clients but they wanted more details to know how to apply the decision under Spanish law. The Socialist party called for moves to be made to enable people to recover their money as quickly as possible. It is still unclear, however, how the banks will go about repaying customers. Banco Sabadell, which said its mortgages were still valid as they had been presented clearly, could be liable for new charges worth 490 million euros, according to Deutsche Bank analysts. BBVA, Spain’s second largest bank, said the ruling would knock its full-year earnings for 2016 by 404 million euros. BBVA shares were down 1.9 percent by 1300 GMT, while next largest lender Caixabank’s were down 2.5 percent Smaller lender Liberbank, which in relation to its size is the most affected, is liable for 259 million euros. Banco Santander (SAN.MC), Spain’s largest bank, was among the least impacted as it did not use mortgage floors.

How strange typing 2017! but by the time most of you read this it will be ! Where did 2016 go ? We at RAINBOW SATELLITES hope you had a good holiday season and we wish you all the very best for 2017 – we know that this time of the year is not festive for everyone and our thoughts are also with those ………. Regular readers may like to know that Molly the foster dog is now in Germany with a good home and a new playmate and seems settled …… we miss her antics but Flo, the lovely sort of daschund has come to stay for 2 weeks until she goes to her new home in England. The garden loved the early December downpour that lasted a few days and more welcome rain is forecast next week – I know it is not good for the people on vacation and tourism but we really do need the rain. TV news ………. The big news for RAINBOW SATELLITES is that we are starting a “pay as you go” internet TV system similar to the schemes most of the internet supply companies offer. Like them there will be an installation and equipment charge of euro 125.00 but then instead of , as in the past , paying a year in advance there will be a euro 30.00 subscription charge which will cover 30 days use (to be used in the following 12 months) as and when the client wants with a 7 day minimum period. So now holiday homes and rental properties can have internet and UK TV paid for just when the property is occupied. The yearly contracts will still be available as before and are the most economical for residents and longer term usage. Properties offering internet and UK TV (full sports and movie pack) will be the first choice of many renters these days ! Contact us for more information. If you are having any TV viewing issues drop us an email with as much information as possible and we will respond with your thoughts ……….. include a
telephone number and we will give you a call at a convenient time if we need more information. Good reliable UK TV viewing is a complex subject however you receive your signal – internet or dish based – and all the parts of the system must be both quality products and installed correctly – one small “error” can affect successful viewing and often costs very little to put right. There is nothing worse than watching most of a programme and losing the last few minutes – generally the only bit you really want to see! If you are new to our TV newsletter and perhaps looking for a property to buy then give us a call before you finally sign the papers ……. Good reliable UK TV viewing is not possible in every property and although I have heard it said many times “we are not coming to Spain to watch TV” you will find the winters are not all sunshine and the evenings are dark and chilly. We will happily look at a property for you and tell you the TV options. We talk about UK TV but we are fully aware there are many other nationalities coming to live in Southern Spain. We can usually help with most countries/language TV systems be it by dish reception or internet – we do not speak every language but we can often install TV from most countries – and even if we as a business/client relationship can not communicate we can always us “Google translate” ! Caterpillars are back
Sabadell to close more branches
Banco Sabadell will close 11 percent of its bank branches in Spain next year, a source at the bank said, as Spanish lenders continue to slash costs to offset eroded margins. The 250 branches Spain’s fifth largest bank will close are in The very Poisonous processionary caterpillars have been spotted in the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida areas – surprisingly much earlier than usual. The hairs of the caterpillar larvae cause harmful reactions in humans and other mammals. The species is notable for the behaviour of its caterpillars, which overwinter in tentlike nests high in pine trees, and which proceed through the woods in nose-to-tail columns, protected by their severely irritating hairs. Caution should be exercised, especially when walking dogs near open areas or waste land.
addition to 92 branch closures over this year, the source said, and would enable Sabadell to adapt to increasing consumer demand for online services. The closures will lead to the relocation or early retirement of 800 employees, the source
said. Almost all of Spain’s leading banks have started trimming their workforces and branch networks in response to rock-bottom interest rates and aggressive domestic competition that have hit
their profitability, now a third of what it was before the country’s financial crisis. Banco Santander (SAN.MC), Spain’s largest bank, has cut 450 branches and over 1,000 jobs last year (2016).

Then stretch that meal out for at least 20 minutes. If you’re still hungry after finishing, take a 20-minute time-out (sip tea; relax; take your mind off eating). At the end of the time-out, check your hunger signals. Go back for seconds only if the signals are still strong.

How to Drink Less Alcohol
Don’t Rely Solely on Willpower
New Year’s resolutions and the ways in which people are motivated to change their lives. Exercising willpower is only half the story; we also need to modify our environment. So if you’re trying to cut back on drinking, avoid situations—like parties or nights out with friends—that may tempt you into over-imbibing. Instead, invite friends to your home for dinner, where you can better control the amount of alcohol you serve (and drink). Visualize the Behaviour You Desire Say you do go to a party: How do you stop yourself from overindulging? Imagine yourself not going beyond your appropriate limit and walking out of the event feeling great,

with a big smile on your face. Having pictured the desired behaviour, your inner computer will choose that reality, making it much easier to drink less or not at all. Replace the Behaviour You’re Trying to Eliminate Doing something you enjoy allows you to focus on action (playing tennis, for example) rather than inaction (not drinking). “One of the real difficulties with the resolutions people make is that they’re negative resolutions,” says Art Markman, Ph.D., a cognitive scientist, an expert on willpower and motivation, and the author of Smart Thinking: Three Essential Keys to Solve Problems, Innovate, and Get Things Done. “Instead, figure out what you can do today that’s fun and exciting and also will have the side effect of your not drinking.”

DRAMA CHOICE
ONE TO WATCH
Unforgotten Thursday 12 Jan 9.00pm-10.00pm ITV Synopsis Unforgotten, written and created by Chris Lang (Undeniable, A Mother’s Son, Torn), focuses on a ‘cold’ murder case of 39 years ago, when the bones of a young man are found beneath the footings of a demolished house. An investigation begins that will unravel the lives of four people who have been waiting for this moment for nearly forty years, as they discover that the past can’t, and won’t, stay buried for ever. Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar take the lead roles as DCI Cassie Stuart and DS Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, the modern day police team who gradually unravel deep-rooted and long-forgotten secrets, which will have a dramatic impact on their investigation and the lives of four potential suspects – Father Robert Greaves (Bernard Hill), Sir ‘Frank’ Philip Cross (Trevor Eve), Lizzie Wilton (Ruth Sheen), and Eric Slater (Tom Courtenay). The slow revelation of these secrets as Cassie and Sunny hunt for the killer will alter the dynamic of the families and their loved ones forever. Episode 2 With their victim now identified, Cassie and Sunny’s search for David Walker’s killer is underway. Having pulled a selection of partial messages and numbers from the pager found with his body, the team hope that BT will be able to track down their sources in the hope that this may shed some light on his final movements. Whilst they wait, David’s wife Tessa Nixon is interviewed by Cassie and Sunny where she reveals that David suffered from depression, which had put a big strain on their marriage. As a result, when he went missing, she assumed that he has either suffered a breakdown or killed himself – she never considered that he’d been murdered. It’s her son, Jason, who is most affected by his father’s murder though, struggling to come to terms with the fact that David didn’t leave them voluntarily all those years ago. As the team reassess the initial investigation into David’s disappearance, a travel card is discovered with an address written on the back. Could these new pieces of evidence contain clues as to who killed David?

Jack Shick introduces Martin to the treasures of a place that was untouched by humans until Europeans accidentally stumbled across it in 1788, just three weeks after the first mainland colony was founded where Sydney is today. Lord Howe Island is home to several species of flora and fauna that occur nowhere else on earth. Proud locals call it “the Last Paradise”. Jack shows Martin how to shimmy up the Kentia Palm, the island’s most famous and only export, and one of the world’s most popular indoor plants

Should my pet ‘kiss’ me?
What is paracetamol for?
Suffering from back pain, headache, fever or cold? The pill of choice is usually paracetamol. The drug was introduced into the market in 1956, and GPs issue a staggering 22.9m prescriptions for paracetamol every year. So it’s disconcerting to read that it’s largely ineffective. For hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis, the drug provides such a small amount of pain relief that researchers wondered if it actually provided any benefit a person would notice. If you’ve got a cold, paracetamol can help make your nose run less, but won’t help with sneezing, coughing, discomfort, tiredness or a sore throat. For migraines, it is is better than placebo but not as good as other painkillers. Meanwhile, if you have a tension headache, you have only a 10% chance of feeling better than if you’d taken a
placebo. It can reduce fever in children – but Cochrane says the studies are poor and sponging down had a similar effect in the research it assessed. The drug does seem to reduce the pain from having your wisdom teeth extracted. Painkiller may not always be the answer – for backache and osteoarthritis, strengthening muscles may work better than relying on painkillers. Headaches can often be prevented by looking away from screens, getting enough rest and avoiding dehydration. He thinks most people know that paracetamol isn’t great, although if it does work for you, keep taking it (but restrict your alcohol, as together they can damage your liver).
Who doesn’t let their dog give them a slobbery “kiss”? Most of the time it doesn’t matter – until it does. Your dog may be part of your family, but the bacteria in its mouth are different from those in yours. As John Oxford, emeritus professor of virology and bacteriology at Queen Mary University London, recently told the Hippocratic Post, dogs spend half their life with their noses in nasty corners or hovering over dog droppings, so their muzzles are full of bacteria, viruses and
germs of all sorts. Mostly, despite these bugs being unknown to our immune systems, we avoid getting sick. But there are bacteria in dogs’ (and cats’) mouths that are zoonotic, that is, they can cause diseases in humans. They include clostridium, E coli and campylobacter, which cause gastroenteritis. Pasteurella multocida, a dog’s normal mouth bacterium, was blamed for meningitis in 42 infants in France under the age of four between 2001 and 2011. Nearly half the babies were newborn,
and most were infected as a result of dogs or cats licking them. Four died. The authors of the paper suggest that contact between infants and pets should be reduced. The solution There is usually no harm from smooching your dog, but then lists a comprehensive set of risks – warning that the thin mucous membrane lining our mouths, noses and eyes is no match for canine bacteria. There are cases of dogs spreading Haemophilus aphrophilus to humans, causing
brain abscesses and inflammation of the heart and – grossest of all – tapeworm infection (Dipylidium caninum), mostly from children swallowing infected flea remnants from a dog’s mouth as a result of being licked. Finally, in a BMJ case report this year was the terrifying tale of a 70-year-old woman, found slumped in her chair, who nearly died from septicaemia. The cause? Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium from her dog after a loving lick.

Should Is too much we drink protein bad cow’s milk? for you?
Why we get hangovers The word hangover has only become associated with alcohol in the past century. Hangovers develop when blood-alcohol content returns to zero, leading to headaches, nausea, anxiety, dry mouth, sweating, gastro-intestinal c o m p l a i n t s , concentration problems, dizziness, drowsiness and hyper-excitability. One of the causes is the way that the body metabolises the compounds found in alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic drinks contain very small amounts of methanol (in addition to ethanol), which the body breaks down into the toxins formaldehyde and formic acid
about 10 hours after drinking, making you feel ill. Another longstanding scientific theory has been that hangover symptoms are down to dehydration, because alcohol decreases the production of an anti-diuretic hormone, something the body requires to reabsorb water. With less of it available, the body loses fluid through urination, drink plenty of water before bedtime.
It is said that the average person consumes 144 pints of cow’s milk a year, but 40% of that is poured on to cereal. The definition of what an average person is seems to include 60% who are children. But what was once touted as the onestop supplier of most nutrients is going out of fashion – Americans drink 37% less milk than they did in the 1970s, and in the UK dairy consumption overall has fallen by a third in the past 20 years. Milk is increasingly getting a bad press. What gluten intolerance did for bread, lactose intolerance is doing to milk. A recent blog suggested: “Maybe people are drinking less milk because it is poisonous to many of us.” Lactose is the sugar found in milk and dairy products and it needs the enzyme lactase to break it down. Without enough lactase, the lactose is broken down by bacteria in the small bowel, causing bloating, flatulence, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and nausea. Globally, around 70% of us don’t continue producing lactase after we have finished breast

or formula feeding. Genetically, babies need milk – adults not so much. But northern Europeans, have adapted to cow’s milk and have a genetic mutation so that only between 2 and 15% have a degree of lactase deficiency. This rises to 23% in central Europeans and 95% in Asian populations. So is lactase deficiency the normal state? Not really – it made sense to drink milk at one time, so we adapted to do so. And cow’s milk is nutritious – it contains calcium, vitamins A and D and riboflavin, as well as protein and isn’t heavy on calories. n see your GP for a lactose breath test, but Lomer suggests drinking a large glass of milk. If you get bloating, gurgling and diarrhea within the next 24 hours, you should consider yourself intolerant. But you may still be able to have milk in cereal and tea. People may have ethical issues about exploiting cows for their milk, but it isn’t true to say we aren’t meant to drink it – because in northern Europe, we are genetically modified to do so.
What do dreams mean?
The better explanation is to view these dreams as expressions of the strong biological instinct. Dreams of falling are much more frequent than dreams of flying; we are more likely to fall prey to gravity than rise above it. Such dreams may
occur when there’s an abrupt shift in neurotransmitters in the brain from one stage of sleep to another. Even if there is a physiological instigator, dreams of falling can take on a host of symbolic meanings in terms of reflecting experiences
of sudden change, disruption, loss or trauma. These dreams can, in extreme cases, shade into scenes of general entropic catastrophe: the world itself is falling to pieces. Trying again and again to do something Sometimes the mind in sleep gets
Carbohydrates are causing an obesity epidemic and fats silt up your arteries. But protein? It provides the building blocks for essential stuff such as cells, muscles, bone, nails, hormones and enzymes. The word “protein” comes from the Greek and means first, as in most important. mainstream and estimated to reach £8bn a year by 2017. The UK government’s dietary guidelines state that men need 55.5g and women 45g of protein a day. A chicken breast has at least 23.5g while a 100g steak has 20.9g. In western Europe and the US, people are already eating twice as much protein as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Recent dietary guidelines warn that teenage boys and adult men should “reduce overall intake of protein foods” and eat more vegetables.

One of the great things about Christmas in Spain for me is the importance the Spanish give to January 6th, Epiphany, or Three Kings day as opposed to Christmas Day itself, particularly in relation to the giving of presents. After all there’s no indication in the Biblical accounts that any gifts were exchanged on the actual day when Jesus was born, but of course the presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh given later by the ‘three kings’, are legendary. Suggestions as to where exactly these ‘kings’ came from include places as far-flung as Iran, India and even China, but no one really knows, and the Bible simply says that they came from the East, which isn’t very helpful. Equally unhelpful is the fact that contrary to what most of us think, the Bible doesn’t actually say there were three of them, allowing us to make that assumption simply on the basis that they brought three gifts. And worse, there’s little to suggest that they were Kings, for the Bible merely refers to them as ‘Wise Men’. But the great thing is that they came, and almost certainly travelled a very long distance to bring their presents, of huge value, to this apparently
insignificant child, who they believed was to change history. They weren’t religious men, in the normally accepted meaning of the word, and knew little or nothing of the practices or beliefs of the Jewish leaders they consulted on their arrival in Israel, but in addition to their gifts, we’re told they fell down and worshiped the child. So the joy of ‘Three Kings Day’ to me, lies not only in the giving of presents and the excited laughter of children, but in the fact that this aspect of the Christmas period, more than any other, emphasises that it’s not the religious, but the wise who find Christ and worship him, and that for some, this can require a very long journey. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes, Your Only Stop for solutions to Your computer problems. As some of you may already know, Olivers Bar has close for refurbishment for 6-8 weeks (ever?). As I wasn’t informed of these changes, or given the time to make alternate arrangements, I’m currently without a place to run my clinic! So when you need to see qualified computer diagnostician (me) you will can ring me or contact me for free through ‘Skype’ (contact name ‘saiminja’) or ‘Viber’ or ‘Whatsapp’ and let’s not forget ‘Email’. There you go 80% more chance of getting hold of me! Enough ‘Self-Promotion’, on to work! Last week I had an intriguing puzzle. A windows 7 computer wouldn’t load the drivers for a customer’s new WIFI printer. The printer was a HP and a very good one at that! The puzzle started with the knowledge that the drivers had already installed, successfully, on a laptop and the owner had no problems printing. Conclusion: the printer and drivers are fine! Obvious really! After several hours from 3 HP technicians, they concluded, as did I after only one hour, that the copy of window may have been corrupted (it can and does happen)! Having tried the standard ways to recover Windows which typically take 20 minute to an hour, and failing, all that was left was to do was a full re-install. Today I’m going to give you the steps that a professional uses in this situation. As in all good ‘How-To’ shows, here’s what you will need in order of least important to most! An External Hard drive; A copy of the replacement O(perating) S(ystem) and Patience! The process isn’t difficult, just time consuming. So let’s start. 1. Do 2 back-ups! The first is a system copy (just in case anything goes wrong – dodgy Windows CD, faulty Hard-Drive, etc.). Depending on the speed of the computer and size of the disk contents, this can take a while, hence the patience! Second stage is to back-up all the data (pictures, videos, downloads, documents, etc), this too, will take time. Thankfully, much less of it! 2. Make a list of all the software that is on the
computer. It will always be a mixture of freeware and purchased software. You will have to check that you still have the software on the CD’s as bought software might have to be bought again! 3. Put the legal copy of Windows into the CD drive and CAREFULLY follow all the instructions. Here, it can get a little awkward. Windows will offer you a dozen options and you need to know, in Your own mind, exactly what you want. A clue: You DON’T want anything that will give Microsoft ANY information whatsoever about you or your computer! Windows 8.x and 10 get very invasive about the information that they want and you have to be certain to say ‘NO’ to these questions. Assuming that Windows has been installed correctly and you are happy that Microsoft know nothing about you, You will have to wait (patience IS a virtue) until the computer restarts a number of times. Eventually, you will have a basic Windows OS. 4. Now need the motherboard drivers CD that comes with your computer. If you have this, put it into the CD drive and install the system, video, LAN and audio drivers. At this point you should have a complete, working, all-singing and dancing computer again. 5. This is optional but I do it to all my computers and offer it (at a small additional charge) to You, the customer. I re-partition the Hard Drive and create a ‘Factory Restart’ (System Backup) of the working system and a way to recover from any major problems. THIS IS OPTIONAL! 6. Re-install all the paid for software. Find, download and install all the freeware. Finally return all your personal information (picture, videos, music, documents, anything else I’ve missed). Restart your computer! Now make a cuppa, pat yourself on the back and prepare the bragging rights for next time you’re in the pub! To arrange an appointment for a time or place use the Phone number or Email address below, Skype (Look for the name “saiminja”), Viber or Whatsapp for free advice concerning your computer.

Deadly New Year Fire
Two men died in the early hours of New Year ‘s Day after becoming trapped on the ground floor of a townhouse in Torreta II urbanization of Torrevieja, while the other two people inside the house, another man and a woman, suffered minor injuries due to the incident. The Civil Guard and the Judicial Police are investigating the source of the blaze, but everything indicates that there was an accident with the flames of the candles that lit the home, which was being squatted in illegally. The firefighters rescued one of the inhabitants of the house from the balcony, and was transferred to the Hospital of Torrevieja with minor injuries. The Three Kings Parade Arrives It certainly was a night to remember in Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa as hundreds of people lined the streets of the town to welcome their Majesties, the Kings of the Orient, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In Orihuela Costa the Three Kings and their entourage threw sweets and toys into the crowds as the colourful parade made its way to Zenia Boulevard commercial centre. Leaving the Town Hall in Playa Flamenca , the Kings paraded along
Calle Pablo Picasso and Calle Nicolás de Bussi towards Zenia Boulevard, where they shared some time with the children. Torrevieja’s three Kings arrived by boat at the Torrevieja’s port. The colourful parade consisted of floats, local bands, horsemen, exotic belly dancers, Disney characters and different animals. They headed towards Calle Ramón y Cajal, Zoa up to Calle Ramón Gallud, with the parade ending in the main church square.
The Three Kings In Mojácar The Three Kings distributed more than 600 gifts to the Town’s children during their parade on January 5th 2017. Their majesties The Three Kings of the East, visited Mojácar to personally deliver their gifts to all the children of the municipality. After the official welcome from Rosmarí Cano the Mayor of Mojácar and, her fellow councillors, their Majesties set off from La Fuente to the Centro de Usos Múltiples, where they distributed the toys. This year, due to the works on the Plaza Nueva,
they were forced to leave their carriages outside the town and not take their usual route from the old town. However, The Three Kings did not want to miss their date with Mojácar’s youngsters and so, they departed from La Fuente at 17.00h on foot, along with their pages and helpers. The official entourage, including local dignitaries and Mojácar Municipal Band, which escorted The Three Kings and all the residents and visitors who wished to accompany them. Mojácar Town Hall’s Department of Fiestas also encouraged
children to join the royal party dressed up as pages and, even the Council representatives helped some children find a suitable outfit. They arrived at the Centro de Usos Multiples, where they distributed presents to the 672 children registered in Mojácar born between 2006 and 2016, special gifts that their Majesties have chosen according to the age and gender. Starting with the youngest, the children received their own gifts, one by one, in alphabetical order.
Hospital Visit
The Councillor of Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, accompanied the Three Kings last Wednesday as they made their traditional visit to the Vega Baja Hospital, where they delivered many toys to the children. The Councillor said that

Many gardeners like perennial flowering plants because they return year after year. However, that doesn’t mean that you can plant them once and forget about them. Perennials require regular maintenance to look and perform their best. Staking, pruning, deadheading, dividing and pest control are a few of the gardening chores you can expect to enjoy when growing perennials. To get the most bang from your buck, be sure to include some long flowering and repeat flowering perennial flowers in your garden design. Large blocks of colour add impact to a garden and the best way to achieve that is with long blooming perennials. There are many different samples on the market, so do take your time in choosing the right one for you.
Weekly Guide: Growing Tomatoes from seeds
Prepare the pots: Fill the small pots close to the top with the seed-starting soil or potting soil. Pat the soil down a little so that it is not too loose, but isn’t packed tightly. Have the kids poke a hole about 1/4” deep in each of the containers. To make it easy for them, show them a spot on their fingers that should not go below the dirt. Depending on their age and finger size, it could be the end of the fingernail (at the cuticle) or perhaps at the first finger joint. This way they don’t have to guess at the depth. Plant the seeds Make sure the seeds aren’t sticking together and then have the kids put two or three seeds in each hole. Some seeds may not germinate, so it helps to have more than one seed in each pot. Cover the seeds with about 1/4” of soil. To help the kids know how much soil to use, do the first one yourself (or do it ahead of time). Use a measuring spoon and then determine how many times the spoon must be filled for the seeds to be covered by 1/4” of soil. That way you can tell the kids to put X number of spoonfuls of soil in the pots. Then pat the soil.

viewpoint 25 Jos & Barbara’s Jolly Big Adventure pt 3 Alqueria in Song and Dance
John MacDonald (El Sordo) www.caratacus.eu
www.soltimes.com
Loco Paco put down his copy of ‘Alqueria Hoy’, Alqueria’s daily newspaper and walked to the window. He had been reading about the crisis in the Remitroot Industry and its fiscal implications. He wondered why they didn’t save money by cancelling the New Year and simply rerunning the old one. It made sense to Paco but then many things made sense to him that didn’t to others. While in reality nothing really made sense at all, why should it, there is no logic or rhythm in life. Paco’s view of reality is just as valid as anyone else’s.
As he looked through his window at the dawn of what should be a new year he wondered if he should wake Pepa but as he didn’t want to die he decided against it. Last night they had celebrated as survivors and today they would remember those who didn’t make it into 2017, just to drink a simple toast to those who are no longer. Paco’s mind then wondered to the new Saharan Dung Beetle racing season and whether Bengy would perform up to expectations. He had
been in intensive training lately and was showing promise even though he was a little slow out of the stalls.
The racing season brought Paco happiness as did Loca Pepa, she understood him, most didn’t. Opinions were divided in Alqueria over his sanity but Paco knew what made him happy, something most ‘sane’ people couldn’t grasp. He understood that happiness wasn’t a right, it wasn’t something he was entitled to, if he could snatch the occasional ‘day trip to paradise’ he would be happy. Paco’s family were a mystery to everyone including Paco. He didn’t know who they are or where they could be, they certainly aren’t in the Pueblo. He didn’t even know which continent he sprung from. He didn’t even mind being called ‘Loco Paco’ it was a better epithet than some and gave people advance warning as to his mental state which made things easier during first encounters. It also gave him a freedom of action not open to ‘saner’ people who had to conform to an artificial norm. Living in Alqueria brought Paco comfort and security as did living with Pepa, both were familiar to him, both allowed him leeway, the leeway a mind like his needed. Perhaps Alqueria is nothing but one large institution for the mentally challenged but the question is, who has the problem and who is sane?
We are going to get squashed and it’s going to hurt, I thought as we sat defenceless inside Henry, who was stuck sideways on in a rambla with the headlights of the Patrulla’s enormous 4X4 hurtling towards the driver’s door. Miraculously the 4X4 stopped just short of impact and spilled its load of rescuers out into the rainy dark. Barbara and I exited Henry, cleared out of the field of combat and left it all to the experts. They pushed, but Henry was not to be moved. He simply settled more firmly into the grit. Another vehicle from the Policía Local arrived, but not even the combined strength of 2 different arms of the Law in the form of 4 fit young men could unstick him by even one inch. There was nothing for it but to tow him out. Gone are the days when you tied a rope round the front axle and pulled – Henry has a bespoke Thingummy, which goes into a covered recess under his right eye – even when being towed he likes to maintain a certain gravitas! However, the main problem was that Henry was sideways on. To get a towrope on him one of the rescue vehicles had to get past him. He was jammed between a near vertical cliff at the back and a 2 foot soft shingle bank at the front. The Patrulla tried to surmount the bank and nearly got stuck. The Policía’s vehicle tried, and got even more nearly stuck. We now had 3 vehicles up to their axles in grit. Who rescues the rescuers? I wondered. But a combination of persistence and cunning prevailed – forwards and backwards, not quite enough
By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com
to get stuck, but a little further each time, until they had made a driveable groove in the grit. Henry was duly hitched up, and had no option but to yield to the greater strength of the Patrulla’s huge vehicle and unstick himself. ‘You follow behind me.’ Rafael the Head Honcho commanded me, indicating the now fully mobile Henry. ‘No, Julián will drive. I’ve lost my confidence.’ I said, pointing to the Second-in- Command Honcho, who seemed quite keen on the idea. Barbara and I passengered in Rafael’s huge 4X4 and hurtled back to Albox at Rally Cross speed, with Julián pushing Henry along behind us at way beyond his comfort zone and with no regard for his dignity. I think to the Patrulla and the Policíait was all a jolly jape, rescuing 2 lost and stuck English ladies – but not once did they suggest by word or action that it could have been My Own Silly Fault! Thank you, guys!

But will it be smoked mackerel or duck? Contemporary Britain is weirdly ambivalent about paté. It is a restaurant staple and a Christmas favourite, yet the subject of this month’s How To Eat has a distinct whiff of naff 1970s dinner parties about it. It is unfashionably rich and heavy, a hangover from a time when we blindly mimicked supposedly sophisticated French cuisine. From ethereally smooth parfaits to horny-handed slabs of minced offal, paté is seen as a complex technical challenge best left to chefs and, somehow, at the same time, a faintly suspect way of using up cheap meat. In 2009, a team of UK scientists published a research paper that naysayers will appreciate: “Can people distinguish paté from dog food?” This (literally paste in French) is a food that is simultaneously loved and loathed, and one which stopped being cool circa 1983. Never let it be said that How To Eat is a slave to the latest trends as we explore, from smoked kipper to chicken liver, how best to eat paté.

Gazpacho or salmorejo
This zesty, chilled tomato soup has claimed space in supermarkets and on menus around the world, but few compare to refreshing Spanish gazpacho made with full-flavoured Spanish tomatoes. Usually eaten as an appetizer – this thick soup is made from blending a whole heap of fresh tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, garlic, onions, vinegar and herbs. It’s the perfect Spanish food for summer, as well as a low calorie and healthy dish. Salmorejo is a similar Andalucian version combining pureed bread, tomatoes, garlic and vinegar – also served cold – and sometimes varied with a bit of ham or egg slices on top. Pisto – Spanish ratatouille
This vegetarian top Spanish dish is for all ages, eaten in Spain as a tapa, appetiser, a side dish to meats, or even as a meal with a fried egg on top or chorizo. It’s a Spanish ratatouille of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, onions, garlic, and of course, olive oil. The palatable competition of intense roasted flavours makes this a tasty recipe to try at home. You can find it in restaurants around Spain, and especially in the towns across the plains of La Mancha, south of Madrid.
Paella: This ricebased dish is well known internationally, although in Valencia you will find many
authentic variations that equally vie for attention. Some consider this a national dish of Spain, but many consider it a Valencia dish, from where it originated and you can typically find the best paella. The most traditional Valencian paella is a mixture of chicken or rabbit, white and green beans and other vegetables, but seafood is also common, where you can find an array of seafood surprises among the flavoursome rice, such as calamari, mussels, clams, prawns, scampi or fish, depending on the type you order. For the adventurous, a black rice stained by octopus ink is a must try.

Health benefits of olives
Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of adding olives and olive oil to your diet: 1. They protect against colon, breast and skin cancer Olives and olive oil contain an abundance of phenolic antioxidants as well as the anti-cancer compounds squalene
and terpenoid. They also contain high levels of the monounsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, which reduces excessive inflammation. 2. Olive oil is good for your heart Olive oil contains biophenols, which suppress the oxidization of LDL
(or “bad cholesterol”) which has been shown to play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease. High levels of LDL in the blood amplify oxidative stress which hardens the arterial walls (called atherosclerosis). The biophenols in olives reduce blood pressure,
therefore reducing the development of arterial plaque as well. 3. They work to reduce pain. Olives contain a compound called oleocanthal that has strong a nt i - i n f l a m m at or y properties, mimicking the action of ibuprofen.

Berlin’s traditional pork feast TEL: 950 121 936 - SALES@SOLTIMES.COM
In Berlin it’s a beloved traditional feast. Around Germany, pork knuckle is known as schweinshaxe and is usually roasted, coming out with a crispy skin. But that’s a far cry from how it’s served in Berlin – which in truth does not look all that appetising: a paleish pink hock on a scruffy bed of sauerkraut (the name eisbein, which means “ice leg” definitely fits). But eaten with pea purée and a squirt of good mustard, it’s a delightful combination: rich, tender and salty, and as hedonistic as Berlin itself. Nowhere does eisbein better than the city’s oldest restaurant, Zur Letzten Instanz. Dating from 1621, it’s a bulwark of real German cuisine. Over the years, the wood-panelled parlour has welcomed everyone from Napoleon and Beethoven to
Angela Merkel and celebs like Jack Nicholson and Nicolas Cage. Eisbein is the most popular dish: Zur Letzten serves up to 80 a day. The kitchen starts in the morning by bringing the meat with pink curing salt, (without it, the hock would be more opaque than pink), which pickles and concentrates flavour. The knuckles are then boiled for two-and-a-half hours with pork fat, blueberries and a secret blend of spices. Carrots, parsley and celery are added to the broth for depth. The hock is served on a bed of sauerkraut with the pea purée. “Eisbein has to be simple,” says head chef Andre Sperling. “Especially the side dishes. It’s so good, you don’t really have to show off.”

TALK OWFN THE TO
Mallorca’s mystery festive pastry
At Palma airport, sharp-eyed visitors may be perplexed by the mysterious hexagonal boxes many people are carrying. They’re not for odd-shaped hats, but ensaïmadas Mallorquina, the Balearic island’s unique pastry. This spiral of dough is thought to date back to the 17th century when it was fiesta food, but its exact origins are unknown. Some people believe its coiled shaped was inspired by Moorish turbans, or that it has Jewish roots, influenced by the Sephardic pastry bulemas, even though it contains lard, or saïm, which gives it its name. Imagine a brioche crossed with a croissant, and biting through a slightly crunchy exterior to layers of light, flaky pastry. Small ones are eaten for breakfast, often with a cup of chocolate so thick you could stand your spoon up in it, at cafes such as Palma institution Ca’n Joan de S’aigo . Supersized ones are made to
order and can feed a family. It’s a popular treat after midnight mass on Christmas Eve and always a mainstay at festive markets. The most traditional is the plain, sugar-sprinkled ensaïmada lisa. But they also come topped with apricot and apple, or stuffed with pumpkin jam, known as cabello de ángel or angel hair because of the strands that pop out of the pastry when it’s cut open. Ever versatile, ensaïmada de sobrasada is a fusion of two of Mallorca’s most iconic products. Sobrassada, a spicy cured pork sausage made from native black Iberian pigs and a hefty hit of paprika, soaks into the sweet pastry, staining it orange and transforming it into a savoury treat. Taste them at FornFondo, which has been in the Llull family for four generations and stocks 20 varieties, or Fornet de la Soca , an old-school panadería that specialises in authentic recipes and organic ingredients.

This big guy is a real gentle giant. He is loveable and likes a good belly rub. He is good with people and in excellent condition. He was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people. He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog.

A South Australian family has done its best to come to the aid of a distressed koala found with its head stuck underneath a fence and unable to move. Diluz Abbasov, 37, said her mother discovered the koala in the backyard of their Athelstone home about 10am on Thursday. ‘Mum said she thought he was dead when she found him, but then he started moving,’ Ms Abbasov said. ‘He’s a fighter.’ Admitting the pair did not know what to do, Ms Abbasov said she relied on instinct and tried to free the koala by pushing it through the fence. ‘I tried to help it but I didn’t have any gloves, so I got a towel and
put it over its head and tried to push it through the gate, but it’s claws were still out so I thought it was too dangerous,’ she told Nine News. That was when Ms Abbasov decided to phone the RSPCA, who then called in a koala rescue team. The specialist koala rescue team told Ms Abbasov to spray the koala with water to ensure it didn’t overheat, and so she did. And while the water kept the Australian marsupial cool, Ms Abbasov said it also prompted the koala to wiggle its way to freedom.

The Promenade des Anglais or English Promenade in Nice runs along the beachfront of the Bay of Angels and is one of the most important parts of the city. The promenade runs from the airport in the west to Old Nice and the Quai des Etats Unis in the east. Along the length of the promenade are several points of interest starting with the Cours Selaya market and Old Nice. Place Massena is along the promenade and is one of the busiest and historic squares in the city.
The Riviera Maya extends along the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Morelos to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Once home to small fishing villages, the Riviera Maya coastline has since
been developed into a modern tourist corridor offering the very best of high-end luxury resorts, fine dining, nightlife, spa retreats, shopping and golf in Mexico. An ideal vacation destination, the Riviera Maya is home to some of the most stunningly beautiful beaches in

Sydney
Sydney Australia is one of the world’s most loved cities and it has a lively and vibrant buzz that makes it the ultimate destination throughout the year. There are always plenty of things to do in Sydney whether it’s summer, winter, or spring, there’s worldclass dining, and entertainment.
Oceania features two classes of ships in its fleet. The newest vessels, Marina and Riviera, which each carry 1,258 passengers, were purpose-designed and built for the line. Its original trio of R-class vessels -- 684-passenger Regatta, Insignia and Nautica -- was acquired when Oceania launched back in 2003. (All three underwent a massive refurbishment in 2014). The big differences between the two are that more amenities -- such as extra restaurants, a Wine Spectator La Reserve Wine Bar, and the Bon Appetit Culinary Center -- are only available on the newer, larger ships. Although they’re smaller Regatta, Insignia and Nautica have a cosier ambience. By virtue of the ships’ sizes, it’s not difficult to find yourself oriented by the first day at sea. These ships bear a high ratio of standard balcony cabins. Service is enthusiastic and gracious, courtesy of the well-trained staff.
Amazing Adventures Oceania Cruises Fleet
At 30,277 tons and with a 684-passenger occupancy, Regatta, Insignia and Nautica fall firmly in the mid-size range but offer the wide variety of amenities and options usually found on deluxe-priced lines. Also in the mid-size range are 65,000-ton, 1,252-passenger Marina, which debuted in February 2011, and sibling Riviera, which launched a year later.

Of the rest 14 managed to score 30 or more, showing the somewhat benign nature of the
conditions and quite straightforward course setup. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Steve Grundy (32 on CB), 2nd Chris Hamblett (32 on CB), and 1st Keith Stevenson with 34 points. El Plantio 2 Golf Society
A total of 23 members, guests and wives took advantage of El Plantio 2’s ‘Away’ Days at La Manga club over the New Year weekend, superbly organised by club vice-captain Lawrence Wanty’s wife Theresa. Very competitive rates were offered for a 3 night’s stay at the 5 Star Hotel Principe Felipe, which included 2 rounds of golf on the immaculate yet very demanding championship courses with wives taking advantage of the Hotel’s facilities. 10 members some braving seasonal colds - played the South and North courses. Winner on the 1st day was Mel Hope with 28 points and Kenton
Wanty triumphed on the final day with a very creditable 34 points. So successful was the experience that suggestions for a similar outing was made for June - watch this space. Fresh from their triumphs - or disasters - from the weekend on the big courses, some members had to adjust their games from playing 6000 metre courses to a 1000 metre 9 hole course for Tuesday’s Foursome competition. 7 pairings competed playing alternate shots in a ‘Medal’ format. Nearest the pins : Hole 2, Lawrence Wanty Hole 9, Keith Smith. 3rd Place Net Handicap 15.25, Alan Janes, Penny Goujon -
58.75 Shots. 2nd Place Net Handicap 10.55, Keith Smith, Mike Davies 56.45 Shots. 1st Place - Net Handicap 11.60, David Swann, Michel Goujon - 55.40 Shots. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on Telephone No: 966 716 616 or 636 116 230.
Camposol Seniors Badminton
Camposol Seniors Badminton and the parent club, Club de Badminton de Totana, held their Christmas and Prize Giving Evening at The Clubhouse Camposol. Eighty people attended including players, partners, family, friends and guests. The Clubhouse very kindly prepared two menus; a Turkey and Tinsel for the British contingent and an alternative Spanish fayre for our colleagues from Totana. Following the meal Pedro Sanchez (the club coach) presented two awards to the most improved youngsters in the club namely Alfonso Abenza and Maria Sanchez. These players plus the other
members of the squad have recently been competing at National level and winning games, a remarkable achievement. With up and coming players in all age groups the club certainly looks to be in great shape......which is more than can be said for the senior group! The Senior Section then presented some far more serious awards. The ‘Richard Attenborough’ award for ‘endangered species’ was presented collectively to Rick Jenkins, Keith Halliwell and ‘big’ Dave Weston. Our ‘Slasher’ award went to Dave Warwick (clearly a man not to be messed with). The ‘Paul Daniels’
award was presented to ‘trick shot’ Tony Brown. The ‘Tom Daley award went to Dave ‘the fish’ Broughton and the ‘Iron Man’ award was presented to the massively popular Ivan Hughes who has faced a really difficult year with enormous spirit and great courage. On a more badminton note, our own most improved senior players were named as Mike Kelly and Chris Huard who have both shown excellent progress this year. The night concluded with a huge raffle and disco courtesy of Carl, ‘the big Welshman’ Thomas where we could all ‘work off’ the excellent food that The
Clubhouse had just prepared. All in all an excellent evening and many thanks go to all the award winners for receiving their awards in such great spirit. Thanks also to The Clubhouse; Stuart, Aaron and all the wonderful staff for doing everything they could to make it a memorable evening. If you’d like be part of this fun organisation, introduce some more exercise into your life or would like to take up badminton again after a gap of many years, why not give it a go? Contact us on our Facebook page; Camposol Seniors Badminton. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sevilla’s French footballer Samir Nasri is facing an anti-doping investigation after a series of tweets revealed he received an IV drip at an American clinic last week. According to the Drip Doctors clinic, the 29-year-old midfielder received an “Immunity Drip”, which includes one litre of hydration fluid and will “keep him hydrated and in top health” while he is loaned out by Manchester City to Spanish club Sevilla. Under World AntiDoping Agency rules, intravenous infusions of more than 50mm are not allowed, unless there is a clear medical reason or the athlete has a therapeutic use exemption. The Spanish Anti-Doping Agency (AEPSAD) is investigation Nasri’s apparent use of the IV drip, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais, while Sevilla are expected to question Nasri on Friday (NZT), when he returns to Spain from his winter break in the US.

10,000 orders placed for the new Discovery
More than 10,000 people have placed orders for the new Land Rover Discovery 4X4 - including 2,000 in the UK – before it has even hit the road. The bulk of the new off-roaders will be built in Britain at the firm’s Solihull factory
near Birmingham – with first deliveries from next spring. But the new the Discovery will also be the first vehicle to be built at Jaguar Land Rover’s new factory in Slovakia from 2018 to cope with expected rising demand.

The vehicle is the fifth generation of the model first launched 27 years ago to 1.2million customers and is curvier, more flexible and higher-tech than its immediate predecessor. But with seven seats as standard it is also much more than a pretty face – showing real mud and guts offroading credentials. It is 480kg lighter than the outgoing
vehicles which also makes it more nimble. It is exceptionally well balanced, and able to perch precariously on rocks – with two wheels off the ground. Trust me, I did it.
