funds to be raised to send 9 year old to usa
Fulgencio Jiménez and Ángeles de la Calle have mounted a campaign to raise funds for a trip to Houston, USA, for lifesaving treatment for their son, Juan, or ‘Juanico’ as he is affectionately known. The 9 year old is suffering from Schimke syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects growth and compromise the functioning of all organs of the body. So far their efforts have resulted in an exhibition of paintings at the Gallery Bezel, to be sold for little Juan’s benefit. To date five paintings have been sold, and the remaining works are on show at the Pizzeria Roma, where it is hoped that more of them will attract buyers. The author Francisco Gijón has donated sales of his novel ‘El Carbayón’, and on next Sunday 11th August, at 21:00, a Gran Bingo will be held in the Plaza de la Marina de Santa Lucía. Fulgencio and Ángeles, 39 and 36 years of age, are both unemployed, and have two other children to support. Their current dire situation has been made worse by the Consejería de Sanidad y Política Social, who in 2011 incorrectly assessed the child’s needs and degree of dependency. This was rectified in 2012, but payment was delayed until 2014. Through the efforts of Juan’s parents, residents of the neighbourhood of Santa Lucia, relatives and friends and appeals through the Internet, four thousand people have pledged their support and demanded that the family receive the monthly assistance of 450 euros, in accordance with the Ley de Dependencia. Despite this support, the Comunidad stuck by their decision to delay payment, and even adopted a rule that reduced the subsidies. In response the parents, each wearing a T shirt depicting Juan and with the slogan ‘Ayudemos al pequeño Juan’ (We help little Juan) have presented the first petition, with 2,000 signatures, at the Ventanilla Única de la Comunidad Autónoma on the ground floor of the Edificio Administrativo del Ayuntamiento. tornado hits la hoya
A young man received a head injury as the result of a tornado, which hit the Jumilla area of La Hoya. He was acting as ball boy in a game between Jumilla and El Pinoso, when the tornado broke a metal shed loose, which blew onto the pitch and struck him on the head, rendering him unconscious. A Guardia Civil patrol was mobilised, and urgent medical assistance called. A Unidad Móvil de Emergencia del Servicio Murciano de Salud and the Bomberos del Parque de Jumilla, as well as officers from the Policía Local attended. The young man, who quickly regained consciousness, was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Virgen del Castillo de Yecla for observation. The tornado, which struck at nine o’clock in the evening, was accompanied by an intense dust storm and light rain, but fortunately only lasted for a few seconds. However, a large amount of minor damage was sustained. The Bomberos struggled for several hours to remove a billboard, which had damaged a parked car, and fallen across the door of the Polideportivo. Fallen branches of trees caused obstructions at the Pista de Tenis at the Centro Deportivo, and in the Avenida de la Asunción, while a fallen tree blocked the buildings of the Cruz Roja in the Avenida de la Libertad.

The Playas of Puntas de Calnegre have shown a remarkable decrease in the incidents of jellyfish and spider fish stings or bites. Throughout the month of July there were only 27 bites against the 221 of July last year, representing a decrease of 93%. The Servicio Municipal de Emergencias has attended a total of 49 incidents over the past month. Of the 27 bites, 16 were by spider fish, 9 by jellyfish and sea urchins. An insect sting also required treatment, five people required treatment for small wounds, one vehicle stuck in the sand needed assistance, and two calls to vehicles with mechanical problems were

attended. The Servicio de Emergencias Municipal were called to two people with hypotension, who were taken to the Centro de Salud Ramonete. The Playa del Poblado de Calnegre and the Cala de Calnegre are monitored daily by a total of seven lifeguards, one more than last year, from 11 to 20 hours. The Consejo de Gobierno has declared the image of the Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Arrixaca, the ancient patron of Murcia, now kept in a Capilla of the Iglesia de San Andrés, as being an item of Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) - Of Cultural Interest (BIC). It is a carving showing the Virgin seated, is by an anonymous sculptor, and dates from the thirteenth century. It is in the Byzantine iconography, carved in walnut wood, painted and gilded with fine gold leaf. Santa María de la Arrixaca was patron of Murcia until 1731, when she was succeeded by the Virgen de la Fuensanta, the current Patron, who was credited with answering prayers for rain. The image lost popular following until 1885, when it was returned to the Capilla of the Iglesia de San Andrés by the Real y Antigua Hermandad de Devotos de Santa María de la Arrixaca, (Royal and Ancient Brotherhood of Devotees of St. Mary of the Arrixaca), who remained custodians of the sculpture. In 2012 it went to the Centro de Restauración de la Región de Murcia (CRRM) for restoration. In entrusting it once more to the Hermandad, the Presidente Regional, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, stressed that it was ‘not only the Virgin of a municipality or a city, but a Patron of the ancient Kingdom of Murcia, whose history stretches back more than eight centuries.’

Owners of killer dogs may face life
The owners of killer dogs could face life in jail under proposals put forward by ministers, according to press reports. The Mail Online reports that 16 people have been mauled to death since 2005, but the law states dog owners can only go to prison for a maximum of two years. Ministers have now launched a public consultation as to whether owners should face jail terms of up to ten years if their pet injures someone and life for a fatal attack. Killing or injuring a guide dog could also attract a maximum penalty of ten years. The move comes months after Jade Anderson, 14, was killed by four dogs while visiting a friend near Wigan. Every year dogs are responsible for 210,000 attacks – around 6,000 of which lead to hospital visits. engineers – who suffer 5,000 attacks a year – welcomed the move, pointing out that at present some owners are fined just £100 if their dog attacks. General secretary Billy Hayes said: ‘Current sentencing arrangements do not match the serious nature of offences. ‘This consultation is very welcome and hopefully indicates the Government is serious about tackling the problem of irresponsible dog ownership.’ The consultation was launched yesterday by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Members of the public will be asked their opinion on the severity of punishments, with recommendations put forward in the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill. Animal welfare minister Lord de Mauley said: ‘Dog attacks are terrifying and we need harsh penalties to punish those who allow their dog to injure people while out of control. ‘It’s crucial the laws we have in place act as a deterrent to stop such horrific incidents.’ Last month Jade Anderson’s parents, along with the
parents of four-year-old John Paul Massey – who died after his uncle’s pitbull attacked him in 2009 – presented a petition to Downing Street calling for David Cameron to take action to prevent more attacks. In February the Government said it would introduce new measures to tackle out of control dogs by changing the law to ensure irresponsible owners can be prosecuted regardless of where their dog attacks. But David Hanson, Labour’s policing spokesman, said: ‘The Government’s proposals on dangerous dogs are weak. ‘As the victims of dog attacks, select committees, the RSPCA and the British Veterinary Association have made clear, the Government should legislate for “dog control notices” which would give local councils and the police the powers they need to make sure owners are responsible and dog attacks are stopped.’ Crime prevention minister Jeremy Browne said: ‘Dog owners who fail to take responsibility for their dogs must be held accountable. ‘This Government is taking
urgent action to protect the public from out of control dogs. We are changing the law so owners can be prosecuted for attacks on private property and our anti-social behaviour reforms will give police and local agencies more effective powers.’ A report published in June by the charity Guide Dogs revealed attacks by other dogs on guide dogs are at an all-time high of ten a month. A total of 240 attacks were reported between March 2011 and February 2013.
robbery San Javier
The Papelería in central San Javier was the scene last week of a robbery, where 150€ in cash was taken, but more importantly, a knife was pulled on the shop assistant, Mari Carmen. At 10.30 on Thursday last a Spanish man of middle age entered the shop and asked for a certain book. As Mari Carmen had her back turned to search for the book he came up close behind her and held a knife to her back. She struggled, and during the struggle the attacker hit her in the face, causing small cut to her nose, after which he escaped with 150 euros in cash. In response to the assistant’s 112 call a patrol from the Policía Local attended. The Guardia Civil also attended, and forensic evidence has been gathered by them.

The Parque Tecnológico de Fuente Alamo, an initiative managed by the Gobierno Regional with the Consejería de Industria, Empresa e Innovación through the Instituto de Fomento (Info) for the development of scientific and technological lines through the Plan de Ciencia y Tecnología, will receive an investment from the Canadian multinational Phoenix Biomedical. A STRAW AND CAMEL SITUATION AT CASTELAR COLLEGE?
INTO THE BLUE YONDER
My quest, this Saturday morning, was to trundle into the nearest village from my mountain lair, on the Sierra Bermeja, to obtain fresh milk and bread, and with luck, some locally churned butter. I did not expect to end up saying good morning to a Smurf! The village that appeared at the end of my chosen goat trail in search of victuals, was Juzcar. The owner of the local bar, that provided me both milk, bread and some local butter, told me that some two years ago, it was decided, by a film production company, to change Juzcar into “Smurf Town” With the agreement of the good people of the town, along with the powers that be, houses were painted blue, and filming of “The Smurfs 2” took place.
The production company agreed that after filming, all the property painted blue, would be returned to white, as before. Another village meeting was hastily convened, with villagers asking that their property remain blue. And so it was. My friendly publican told me before 2011, his village received no more than 300 tourists a year. Since the change of colour, some 210,000 visitors a year, wander the streets, buying Smurf souvenirs and dropping into his bar for drinks and food fit, he tells me for both a King and a Smurf. With a bag full of milk cartons, bread and fresh butter, I made my weary way, back to my hovel in the mountain, passing a small gentleman with a pointed blue hat on, making his way towards the village. Must be too much sun again!
My informant behind the bicycle sheds at the college, tells me the gentleman from that fine city of Murcia, who had expressed his wish to throw a financial lifeline, to Castelar (See last weeks Sol Times) may not, now do so, as he feels he has been misled, allegedly, over the the true financial morass, that would require to be sorted, before the college could be up and running, under his stewardship.
If would appear that some 850,000 euro would be looked for by the bank(s), rather than 500,000 euro, the amount first discussed, allegedly, across the table, by the powers that be. I’m sure all parents and staff, wish that this setback can be quickly sorted, and this fine establishment, back on course, to open for the Autumn term.
EL MOJON Monday August 12th, will see Fencing Workshops around the promenade, so don’t forget your Foil. At midday, a Sea Market will open for business, again on the promenade. Tuesday 13th, will have Football Championships for children and youngsters over 16. This will take place in the Park Las Aves, at 9.30am. At 6.30 in the evening, there are children’s games planned on the beach, with the crowning of the El Mojo’n beauty queen at 10.30pm. Wednesday 14th, will see the Petanque Championships (Hard hats recommended) at 6pm, when at 7pm the Great Costume Parade will take place. To bring this days events to a close, at 10.30pm, it’s time for “Coroy Voces Dorads” , ballroom dance workshop, so show us all, how it’s done. A fandango down the promenade anyone? Thursday 15th, just two events. At 7.30pm., it’s the football championships final, in the Pinatar Areana, and at 10.30PM., is time to dance the night away to “Suenos De Luna”, with hot chocolate and churros provided! This takes place on the promenade.
Friday 16th, will start off with a race around the town at 9am when we then move to the evening, with the Solemn Procession along the streets in honour of Saint Roque at 7.30pm, followed by an outdoor Mass, again in honour of Saint Roque. At 10.30pm, it’s time again, should one have enough energy left, to dance away with local bands, on the promenade. Next year, Morris Dancing and Punch & Judy? I shall have a word with Mr.Mayor. Not to be left out, Torre de la Horadada, have some music and events, they would like me to mention. Friday August 9th., will be a chance to take part in “Go-Go” music on the Los HiquericasVillas beach at around 11pm. There will be, so I am told, many “Surprises” as the evening progresses! (Punch & Judy?) On Wednesday 14th, at 8.15pm, the flower offering to the Virgin de la Asuncion will take place, outside (Not inside please note) the Guardia Civil H.Q.. Mind how you go! At 10pm, in The Square, will be a chance to dance to “Atheras”, followed, at 11pm, “Rock Landing”, more time to dance into the early hours with several local bands. More entertainment listing next time. Still, it is a long winter.

Building could be allowed on land affected by fire
LAND destroyed by forest fires may soon be able to be built on without waiting the requisite 30 years, although the government admits it will have to act with caution, reports ThinkSpain.
At present, the 30-year rule, imposed some years back, is aimed at discouraging unscrupulous developers from setting fire to land they wanted to use to build residential and holiday complexes and golf courses so they could then make a drastically-reduced offer to buy it. Now, there is little point in arson attacks by property promoters, since even if they bought the burnt-out land they would not be able to develop it for another three decades. But agriculture minister Miguel Arias Cañete says he does not see why structures of ‘general social interest’ should not be built on charred plots, a description in which he includes schools, hospitals and prisons. Arias Cañete will not recommend any law changes that allow residential or commercial property or ‘anything that could lead to private financial profit’ to be constructed, and

says legislation reforms would have to be thought through very carefully since the definition of ‘general social interest’ could be stretched beyond all recognition fairly easily. Problems with ‘general social interest’ description: Why the wording has to be watertight
This definition was used when the infamous ‘land-grab’ law, the LRAU, was first approved at the end of the 1990s when the PP last came into power, and allowed local authorities to compulsorily purchase plots of land for a very low figure where building plans ‘in the public interest’ were needed. Whilst this was mainly to allow schools and hospitals to be built and to prevent speculators from buying cheap plots of wasteland and then being able to hold the local council to ransom when they needed it for these purposes, huge luxury urbanisations, hotels and golf courses were considered on many occasions to be of ‘general social interest’ as they would create jobs and bring in local business from holidaymakers. When corruption and nepotism was thrown into the mix, the outcome was disastrous for homeowners whose

Electricity bills rise for the second time in a month

Thousands of British/EU citizens have now come forward to reclaim up to £400 million in overpaid inheritance tax (IHT) by the Spanish government after the Spanish tax loop was recently discovered. With the average reclaim amount currently being £12,000, higher than the original estimated average of £10,000. Background: Up to 40,000* UK families who have been lucky enough to be gifted with an inherited property in Spain have fallen foul of a Spanish tax loop that has seen them overcharged Spanish IHT (inheritance tax) to the tune of £400 million, whilst Spanish residents paid close to 0% IHT. • The different IHT treatment between residents and non-residents recently led the European Commission to take Spain before the European Court of Justice on March 7 2012, as it is the European Commission’s belief that the current Spanish inheritance tax provisions infringe EU treaty freedoms when either the heirs or deceased persons are non-residents in Spain. • “Experts state it is very risky to wait for the ECJ ruling. It is impossible to know when the ECJ ruling will be taken and due to legal time limits cases may have expired by then and the claim could not be filed anymore.” In addition, the sooner claims are filed, the sooner people affected may get their refund. However, the Spanish IHT rules are still in force and conservative estimates based on data from the Spanish Tax Authorities has indicated that 60,000 UK families have been overcharged IHT by an average of £12,000 each in the last 8 years. However, only 40,000 are still able to make a claim due to the Spanish legal time limits, which stop claimants attempting to make a claim after 4 years from the tax payment date. Experts believe it will take 2 more years for the Spanish Authorities to amend the IHT Laws so, any non Spanish resident who inherit in the future cal also claim almost 100% of the inheritance taxes to be paid.

Gibraltar Border Queues Incense British Authorities
Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs has called an ‘urgent’ meeting with the Spanish ambassador to find out why ‘unjustifiable and unacceptable’ border queues mounted up between Spain and Gibraltar last week. According to various press reports, drivers were subjected to ‘disproportionate’ and ‘unnecessary’ checks, causing seven-hour delays getting to and from Gibraltar between July 26 and 30. Hugo Swire will meet with ambassador Federico Trillo to
request that such delays ‘do not happen again’. “Long delays of up to seven hours at the border between Gibraltar and Spain occurred as a result of completely over-the-top inspections on vehicles entering and leaving the Rock by Spanish authorities. The British government considers these delays unjustified, unacceptable and should not be happening between two European Union member States,” Swire stated. “The UK would not wish to speculate whether this incident bears any relation to the disagreements between Spain and Gibraltar over the installation of concrete blocks to create an artificial reef in Gibraltarian waters,” added Swire, referring to the latest in a series of disputes between Britain and Spain over the Rock. On Friday, after Swire’s announcement, queues of between four and five hours were experienced most of the day getting back into Spain from Gibraltar. The Gibraltarian government has welcomed the British authorities’ stance and said the procedures established by Spain in relation to border controls ‘are out of place’ within the European Union. Whilst recognising that Spain has the right to exercise border checks, these should be ‘in proportion’ and in such a way as not to interfere with the free movement of EU citizens across member State borders. But head of diplomatic relations at the Spanish embassy, Ramón Gandaria, has replied that the border inspections are ‘not negotiable’. In a message to British diplomat Simon Gass, Gandaria reminded the UK that Gibraltar does not form part of the Schengen treaty and is not therefore covered by the ‘free movement of citizens and trade’ rule, nor does it have a common VAT or IVA regime. (Residents here are also very welcome.) The club was first formed in 2003, and one of the founder members, John Blakely, is still regularly playing with the club. He and his friends were helped by the knowledge and expertise of a very experienced player, Frank Lanaway, now living back in the UK, but who joins us for a game whenever he is Spain. charity 4 charities Charity 4 Charities is a registered Charity formed nearly six years ago, with the soul intention of helping other Charities that need extra help and support to survive. The organisation consists of seven members and a wonderful group of volunteers, who give their time freely to the many fund raising events they organise every year. Theme nights, BBQ´s, Golfing days out, and their Annual Presentation Evening, where they present all the Charities they support that year, a cheque for €1,000, EACH. Over six years they have given over €120,000 to sixteen different charities, some have received help every
year. Many people have never heard of this registered charity, it’s a pity, you should have. Because they give so much, to so many. Derek Monks, a local Councillor, and the Mayor of Rojales are some of those people recognising their Charities hard work, and support many of the functions they hold, especially the Presentation evenings. One of the biggest events on the calendar has been running for over six years, and is as popular now as it was from the start, especially with the locals. Not only can you make money on items you sell, but at the
same time you know you’re helping those less fortunate. The venue is the Bull Flanagan Quesada, near the golf course. Chris, the manager, is a C 4 C committee member. Sandra a local Author is the Auctioneer. Many people only go for the banter she makes in her Brummie accent and the home made cakes they auction off every week. These have all been donated by Nadia and Dave for over five years. All the money raised from these goes to the three children’s Charities they support. Booking in is from 9.30am, starting at,1pm. Items booked in pay only 50 cents for any item sold, and 50cents is added to items sold, this is given to the charities they support throughout 2013. Goods can be booked in on line or registered on the day. As well as the Auction, we have an outside stall; this is open from 9am till the Auction finished. The money raised, also goes to Charity 4 Charities. This year they have already managed, to raise the €10,000 Euros needed, to pay the ten chosen charities who will be receiving a cheque in November. But their hard work doesn’t stop there.
Because of the many people who support Charity 4 Charities, they are able to give on average, €800 of dried food, every couple of months, to the poor in Rojales (Caritas). They take nothing for themselves, only happy to give to others. We want nothing for ourselves, but your co-operation would help get our Auction noticed, this way we can continue helping others. ...AND THERE CERTAINLY WAS on Wednesday last, when ‘Woody and The Peckers’, once again, blasted out hits of yesteryear, as well as an excellent Buddy Holly set. The venue, once more, was Restaurante El Alto La Doloros, in Guardamar. The Restaurant & Terrace were filled to capacity, with more than 170 ‘old rockers’ dancing the night away. The food and service at the restaurant received much praise from the revellers, who collectively managed to raise just over 720 euros for the Benijófar Crisis Appeal. Andreas, the owner of ‘El Alto La Doloros’, added another 100 euros, as well as donating a number of bottles of wine for the raffle. What a great night, what generosity, and what a fantastic amount of money to help our less fortunate neighbours! The next organised event at ‘El Alto La Doloros’ will be on Friday 16th August, which will be a night for ‘Remembering Elvis’,
on the 36th anniversary of his passing. The night will celebrate his life and music, and will include a tribute to The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, by Martin Dean, of Radio Nova. This event is held in association with Quesada Spiritualist Church, who will be donating money to another needy charity. Tickets for the last event were sold out very quickly, and a number of people were left disappointed. So book early! Ticket price is 10 euros, which includes a BBQ meal. Mazarron Festival de Baile
Most Promising Dancers 2013 and Dance Workshop led by Student Teacher. MFDB 2013 would like to thank everyone for venturing down to the MFDB 2013 event at the Hotel Playa Grande on the 29th and 30th June. A fantastic event for 60 dancers, 100 spectators, 25 volunteers and sponsors having been inspired through the beautiful art form of dance. Coordinated by The Arts & Cultural Association of Murcia (ACAM) cultural project Murcia Dance and managed by Sponsor Susie Long of Silver Keepsakes The Mazarron Festival de Baile is a combination of Dance Workshops for participants, a Competition, a Celebration (this year achieved through a social event sponsored by ACAM Fiesta Faces) and The Presentation Awards. Different styles of dance were led in workshops by teachers from the Julie Bruce Dance Academy, Broadway Dance and Murcia Dance for all MFDB participants. Styles included Jazz, Musical Theatre and Street. It was great to have a Student Teacher support the workshop element of the festival this year. Charlotte Sweet of the Julie Bruce Dance Academy delivered
a fun and energetic workshop for all the dancers age 5~12 years who were participating in the solo and duet festival competition element. The awards are the highlight of the weekend. All participants received certificates and medals for their dedication and commitment not only to the festival but to the dance training they take part in with their teachers throughout the year. Annual Awards this year were awarded to all dance schools participating. Julie Bruce Dance Academy won the highest marked award for Category Age Group 13~ 21 in the Solo’s and Duets, Broadway Dance was awarded Highest Marked 13~21 Group and Troupe. Dancers from Murcia Dance were awarded Highest Marked Solo, Duet and Group in the Under 13 Category. Zoe Croarkin of Murcia Dance not only won the Highest Marked U13 Solo Award but also achieved the Most Promising Dancer Under 13 Award. Chloe Troch of Broadway Performance Academy achieved the Most Promising Dancer Age 13~21 years. The Mazarron Festival de Baile is now in its evaluation and consultation stage and

Santa would never go on holiday at Christmas but Martina Scheurer, councillor for the coast took her holidays in August leaving coastal residents and visitors with rotting vegetation on our streets, dirty beaches and lucky-lucky men everywhere. Our mayor who couldn’t organise a booze-up at a brewery allowed his councillor for the coast’s foreign holiday at the most crucial time of the year for her to be at the helm. Saturday’s La Verdad newspaper highlighted coastal problems brought about by the bungling mayor and councillor for the coast, pointing out how increased Police activity to curb illegal street traders in Torrevieja and elsewhere was not matched in Orihuela Costa, so coastal residents and tourists are now hounded by hawkers on the municipal beaches during the day and on the streets, restaurants and bars in the evenings. CLR Councillor Pedro Mancebo pointed out that every day since the start of the tourist season the beaches and business areas of the coast have been overrun with illegal street traders. He urged the green mayor Monserrate Guillen, who is responsible for Public Safety, to “take better control of the illegal street vendors before they completely destroy tourism and the legally established businesses in the area.” The CLR spokesman said the upsurge of this type of illegal trading, with no control over what they do is worrying as they offer all kinds of illegal material, of questionable origin and without regard to public safety. Many of the vendors are illegal immigrants, “they are overrunning beaches and
our streets”. He criticized the mayor who is the head of the local police “for not taking similar action as other areas to control illegal trading.” Mancebo said that “if you look around any afternoon or evening you can see how many hustlers there are”, interfering with the tax paying businesses who pay their fees and comply with all the rules of opening licenses.” It is not acceptable that “the mayor looks the other way when the number of complaints is increasing from the business associations and coastal traders”. Mancebo urged the mayor to ensure that the local police take control and if necessary bring in reinforcements to protect the public and the legal businesses, whose displeasure, is growing. “ Mancebo also criticized the mayor and the councillor for the coast for allowing the dirt and filth to build up on the coast, “the coast has never been in worse shape, which says a lot about the green mayor and councillor.” The CLR leader also pointed out that kerbs, footpaths, and street furniture require “more attention from existing municipal officials because the tourist image that has taken many years to build is being destroyed because of the inaction of the government.” The good news is that on the same evening that La Verdad published this criticism there was a strong contingent of police on the streets of Orihuela Costa. She even has a new boyfriend called Empereo a magnificent Spanish stallion who is also had state of the art surgery. He was suffering from crippling arthritis caused by bone disease in the fetlock of his right front leg. This would be like your wrist... but he has to stand on his.

He has had metal supports fitted into the bones on either side of the joint to enable him to walk again. At the moment he is in a plaster cast while it all heals. Faith could not be in better hands and the Rescue Centre is very fortunate to be working with such experienced people.

Gaspar and his team suggested that Faith should stay with them longer at their clinic because of the high temperatures in the summer months when Faith needs more attention to make sure she is comfortable on her prosthetic leg. Sue and Rod have happily agreed that Faith
should stay with them for the foreseeable future. As this will also give them the time to finish off Faith`s new stable and the access into her garden area. The Rescue Centre has recently rescued two more horses and also taken in another donkey so this now makes a grand total of 57 horses, ponies and donkeys to care for plus finding the time to complete the disabled facilities for visitors as well as the building work for Faith. I am really happy that Faith`s story is now in hard copy “says Sue” “We quite simply would not have come this far without the help and publicity that we have enjoyed from the English speaking press here on the Costa Blanca and beyond. The great group of people that work at these publications have helped us save many many equines. Bretón brags about ‘fame and fortune’ on TV
A father who murdered his two children by drugging them and incinerating them alive has bragged about how he is ‘going to get rich on TV’ after being approached by mainstream channels to perform live interviews. José Bretón, serving 40 years for killing six-year-old Ruth and José, two, to get revenge on his wife Ruth Ortiz after she announced she wanted a divorce, is allegedly receiving offers on a daily basis for giving an interview to an unnamed analogue channel. But Mediaset, the broadcasting control body, has put a stop to it as a result of public outrage when the news leaked. The channel was making lucrative offers, sources claim.
Bretón was reported as saying: “I’m going to have to tell my dad to stop sending me 60 euros a week, because the
TV people are going to make me rich.”
Head of Mediaset’s PR department, Mirta Dragó, said on Twitter: “He’d better not think it’s going to happen on any of our channels.” She recalled the interview on the programme La Noria with Rosalía García, mother of the youth known as ‘El Cuco’, who was involved in the murder of Sevilla teenager Marta del Castillo Casanueva, which led to public outcry so intense that the presenter, Jordi González, was forced to cancel the slot. A year ago, a non-legally binding motion was discussed in Congress, having been presented by MP for Coalición Canarias in the Canary Islands, Ana Oramas, to forbid TV channels from paying convicted criminals for interviews.

Yemen British embassy staff withdrawn over security All British diplomatic staff in Yemen have been withdrawn to the UK
and the embassy closed “due to increased security concerns”, the Foreign Office has said. Dozens of employees were moved to the UK overnight, the BBC understands. Earlier the United States ordered all its citizens in the country to leave following a terror alert. Twenty US embassies and consulates in the Middle East and North Africa were closed suddenly on Sunday. In a statement the Foreign Office added: “Due to increased security concerns, all staff in our Yemen embassy have been temporarily withdrawn, and the embassy will remain closed until staff are able to return.” The BBC’s security correspondent, Frank Gardner, said the decision was taken on Monday and that all the staff were currently en route back to the UK. Officials are describing the action as a “drawdown”, rather than an evacuation, our correspondent added. Similar closures of British missions have recently taken place in Benghazi and Damascus.

I understand that if I sell my property I needtothink about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax , and how is it calculated? A . Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited , but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realize that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities.The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation: The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. Plusvalia tax = Catastral value of the land x Yearly percentage of value’s increase x Number of years of ownership x Tax rate The yearly percentage of value’s increase and the tax rate are fixed by the Town Halls.They are established locally. Up to now, when a Town Hall had updated the catastral values, usually with really high increases of the values compared to the existing ones, article 107.3 of the Law had established that on the following five years after the revision of the values, the Town Halls had to apply a deduction of 40 to 60 % to the catastral value. If a Town Hall made not contemplation of this rule teh law established an automatic deduction of 60%. However new Law passed in 2012 has changed that situation allowing the Town Halls to eliminate
those deductions, which is why a loto of people are suddenly paying much higher rates and find themselves with an unfairly high plusvalíaa tax when they sell. On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money form this seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest. For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees. The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

A Very Medieval Market in Consuegra (Toledo) Starting in 1997 the good burghers of Consuegra have commemorated the Batalla de Consuegra when the Almoravids under Yusuf ibn Tashfin clobbered a Christian army led by Alfonso VI, which actually took place in 1097, by holding every year a grand Medieval Feast. In the Castle, above on the hill, in the Plaza de Toros and in the Central Square of the town, concerts of medieval music, tournaments and re-enactments are given, and of course there is a real Medieval Market. This year the Feast is held on 16, 17 and 18 August - quite a good reason to take a look at what Consuegra has to offer. Consuegra is a typical provincial town in the province of Toledo, near where the A4 and the CM42 motor ways intersect. From a distance you can spot the Castle and no less than 11 real Spanish wind mills - not for nothing is Consuegra part of the Don Quijote legend. In the middle of the town is a charming square surrounded by ancient buildings - some of them half-timbered - in which the Medieval Market is held. Participants have been carefully chosen by the Town Hall in conjunction with Amata, the crafts association which has quietly built up an excellent name throughout Spain for concentrating on quality above all else in its craft markets. As so many markets nowadays describe themselves as “craft markets” whereas in fact they are little more than ethnic pound shops, Amata has coined - and officially registered - the term “Artesanía de Autor” to describe craft markets where everything on the stalls is made by the people at the stalls. So to the Medieval Market in Consuegra comes a wood turner, a smith, a book binder and a potter and all will be at work. Mayte makes wonderful miniature shops and workshops - officially meant for Nativity scenes but in fact they make a fascinating display all the year round. José carves cunning jewelry, combs, spoons and hair pins from bone and horn, Maria-Jesús and Enrique turn out marble pestles and mortars, Gema makes puppets and Flor transforms Spanish roof tiles into amusing Spanish house fronts. Unemployment in Spain will not fall below 26 per cent until at least the year 2018, and salaries should be sliced across the board by 10 per cent to create more jobs, says the International Monetary Fund (FMI). And two years after cutting wages, IVA should go up again, according to the FMI. They also recommend reducing the amount of money companies have to pay in Social Security for their employees. Saying Spain’s economy is showing positive signs and appears ‘about to turn a corner’, the FMI adds that the labour reform – aimed at making it easier and cheaper for companies to get rid of
staff and a fall in salaries in the public sector and large companies – is reducing unemployment and ‘bearing fruit’. The jobless figures fell by 65,000 in July, but statistics show that 90 per cent of people who got back into employment last month are on temporary contracts and working part-time. It is likely unemployment will therefore rise again at the end of the summer holiday season when work in the tourist industry dries up. The report by the FMI, led by Christine Lagarde (pictured right) raises concerns about the extremely high proportion of temporary jobs compared to permanent, stable employment.
It says that in Spain, the likelihood of finding a permanent job is exceptionally low and that of losing a temporary job is very high. The FMI says ‘in-house flexibility’ is needed, cutting the number of seasonal jobs and increasing stable, long-term ones, and ‘improve active labour policies’ are also necessary. In-depth negotiations between the government, companies and unions are the next step, to persuade firms to pledge to take on more employees in exchange for paying them 10 per cent less and for an ‘immediate’ reduction in their Social Security contributions.

Commercial Property Market in Spain Begins Revival
A report published by independent global property consultants Knight Frank shows the revival in Spain’s commercial property market has begun. Take up of office space in Madrid has risen almost 60% in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, with businesses and investors signalling confidence in the market which is showing signs of increased stability. Prime rents remained unchanged at €25 per square metre with analysts suggesting this rate had bottomed out having fallen by 40% since 2008. Office vacancy rates, which have been consistently rising since 2007, fell slightly in the first half of 2013 due in part to the lack of new space entering the market. The sudden rise in the commercial
property sector was boosted by some large scale transactions of late. Vodafone recently acquired 50,000 square metres in Madrid for its headquarters whereas AXA boosted its portfolio after buying €192 million of office space in Barcelona. Confidence in the market could be due to more stability in the Eurozone as whispers of the block breaking up have substantially diminished. Whilst the huge surge is mainly centred around major cities, it is hoped and likely, that the confidence will spread across the country spurred on by the saturation of relatively cheap commercial accommodation available. Spain’s delicate recovery depends on investors returning to Spain.

The Sale of new vehicles in Spain increased once again in July aided by the government’s direct subsidy scheme to underpin a market undermined by weak consumer spending caused by the country’s 2nd recession in 4 years.

New car purchases by companies remained weak as the corporate sector continued to rein in investments and reduce debt. Sales declined 13.9% from a year earlier to 18,636 units and were down 21.5% in the first 7 months of the year at 113,539 units.

Unswervingly tenacious in her criticism of Castellon Airport, Monica Oltra, the Deputy spokesman for the Compromís Party in the Regional parliament of Valencia, has asked Aerocas for details as to how they they intend to to reduce the current expenditure at the facility by 19%. King Mohammed VI of Morocco has revoked the formal reprieve of a Spanish paedophile who was among the 48 prisoners from the country pardoned at the request of Spain’s Royal family. Daniel Fino Galván, a retired Spaniard who owns three apartments in Kenitra, north of the capital, Rabat, was jailed for 30 years in 2011 for the rape of at least 11 children aged between four and 15. His reprieve and release from custody sparked violent protests in Rabat, as well as in Kenitra, Tetouan and Tangier, and national outrage last week. Demonstrations were also held outside the Moroccan embassy in Paris, a city with a very high population of north
Africans. Following King Juan Carlos of Spain’s recent visit to the north African country – his first Royal engagement abroad since his latest operation, this time on his spine – the Moroccan monarch, a close personal friend of HRH Juan Carlos, agreed to release 48 Spaniards. Reprieves to prisoners are standard practice on the day of the national festival to celebrate the anniversary of the King’s coronation. Most of these had been jailed for offences related to cannabis-smuggling, and included a 67-year-old man who has always claimed the drugs were planted in his delivery lorry without his knowledge. But King Mohammed VI says he had not been made aware
of the nature of the crimes of the released prisoners in many cases, and in particular that of Sr Fino Galván. His cabinet insists that had he known the man was a paedophile, the monarch – who is father to a young son – would never have released him. Sr Fino Galván has now left the country, but authorities in Spain and Morocco have agreed to ‘discuss the next step’ regarding the convicted sex offender. Other foreigners in prison in Morocco for child sex abuse include a British man detained in Tetouan, on the north coast, two months ago for the rape of a girl of six, and a French man who was jailed for 12 years in Casablanca in May this year for paedophilerelated activities.

If there’s any one notable trait that foreigners will take from Spanish culture alongside its rich history, enticing cuisine, and vast array of natural sights and landscapes; it’s the nation’s vivacious party culture, that has somewhat formed a niche character and atmosphere of its own. Countless street parties and fiestas are constantly held each month throughout the year in cities all over this country, with each event commemoration being a different excuse for people to celebrate together. Fiestas de las Virgen Blancas (The Festivals’ of the White Virgin), is held every year from August 4th to 9th in Vitoria-Gasteiz, to honour the patron saint of the city,
Virgen Blanca.

Usually a tranquil, quiet and calm city, the capital of Álava and Basque country becomes quite the opposite during the days of these celebrations.
When the celebration opens, Celadon descends from the top of the tower on to a balcony in the square, holding an umbrella and wearing a typical blouse and beret - almost reminiscent of a Mary Poppins scene.
The festivals were first celebrated in 1884 and have been a significant feature of the regions cultural calendar ever since. Although the actual festivity is on the 5th of August, celebrations commence the night before as crowds gather together in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, to await the chimes of the San Miguel clock tower. The traditional “chupinazo”, a firework rocket, and the ‘Descent of Celadon’, a large ragdoll symbol of a native village man from Alava, mark

Celadon then makes its way through the streets of Vitoria, amongst the streams of people celebrating around. The six-day long party that follows this opening event entails live bands, brass bands, groups of ‘blusas’, street processions, bullfights,
sporting events and theatre to name a few. Festivities will carry on till 5 or 6am the following morning, and then proceed to continue again the following evening of the festival, till it all ends – a standard occurrence for most festivals in Spain. The Fiestas de las Virgen Blancas attracts approximately 40,000 visitors each year, and simultaneously changing along with the times, it now incorporates and caters for modern tastes whilst still retaining its longheld traditions

So what sort of person would be daft enough to make a 90 mile round trip each week just to go to Church? So asked a friend of mine from the UK recently, knowing perfectly well that I do: driving each week from the hills above Albox to the Anglican Church at Mojacar. He seemed appalled at the apparent waste of time and money in my regularly making such a journey, and spluttered an indignant denial when I suggested that he travelled even further to his Church; until of course I reminded him that along with many others, his Church was a football club - in worship of which he regularly travelled the length and breadth of Britain. It’s all a matter of priorities really; and for me, as for a considerable number of others who regularly travel similar distances, the opportunity to worship Almighty God in a language and style I understand, is more than worth the small sacrifice of driving a mere 90 miles just once each week. After all, using words from the Creed, I truly believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I really do believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, my Lord; who was crucified, buried yet rose from the dead; so that in spite of my frequent failures, I with all who believe in Him may stand forgiven when he returns in power, as I am certain in due course he will, as judge of all. And so, whilst surely enjoying to the full the life and opportunities I have, I also enjoy preparing, so much as I am able, for that time when I progress from the life I have here, to the next. Iceland in San Javier have kindly chosen APAH as their sponsored charity for 2013. In May, they held their first fund-raising event, which was a great success, and APAH’s collection tins on the tills and the trolley they have for dog and cat food donated by customers (and staff!) are proving a great source of help in their efforts to feed and care for their dogs and cats. The next event being organised is to be an auction. Anyone is welcome to bring along unwanted gifts, raffle prizes or even impulse buys, where things have been bought by people, but never used. But this is an auction with a difference as 15% from the sale of each item goes back to the donator. It is hoped this will encourage people to bring along goods that they have no use for, but haven’t got round to

Ford-Dunn leads the spanish supermoto championship
It’s been a busy July for the Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia. Both Anthony and Mat Ford-Dunn were in action at the 3rd round of the Catalan championship earlier in the Month with Mat finishing 3rd and 2nd in his two races for 2nd overall and Anthony having a fantastic ride to finish 1st and 2nd that gave him the overall win in the SM Open class. After the confidence boosting results from the Catalan championship at Alcarras the brothers were next out at the Samper de Calanda circuit in Aragon for the 3rd round of the Spanish Supermoto championship. The fast and flowing circuit suited more powerful machines but the brothers put in a superb display on their Advance Moves International Removals sponsored machines, in the extremely hot conditions to come away with some strong results. The brothers had mixed fortunes with Anthony at the front of the pack in the SM open class before three different problems in each of his three races prevented him from achieving the podium position that he so rightly deserved. In the first race he had to make a stop and go penalty
for jumping the start despite not having gained an advantage, in the 2nd race he was knocked off his bike in the 2nd corner and just to top the day off, he had a rear puncture in the final race of the day! Despite the catalogue of disasters he still finished 6th overall and knows that his pace is strong, he just needs a little more luck next time out. It appeared that whilst Anthony was suffering with bad luck his older brother Mat was having all the good luck in the SM Masters class as he finished in 3rd and 2nd positions in his two races for 2nd overall, and enough points to push him into the championship lead. According to the latest Imie local market report prepared by leading real estate appraisers, Tinsa, the price of housing in Spain fell by 10.5% in the second quarter of 2013. Quesada Golf Charity Day for Elche Children’s Home Wednesday 31st July was a special day for the society as it was being sponsored by our hosts at Quesada Country Club David & Anita Patrick, we were playing for a Trophy put up by them called the QCC Charity Cup as money raised by the day would go to their chosen charity Elche Children’s Home. The Golfers returned a little later than expected possibly due to the heat and extra refreshments needed on the 19th Hole! With 28 Golfers taking part it was a fun day out and despite the heat everyone had a great day. As well as some really great prizes for the winners a Luxury Hamper provided by Anita and Dave, owners of Quesada Country Club raised the fantastic sum of €250 for The Children’s Home in Elche.
The luck winner of the hamper was Anne Hobbs. Is there no stopping Anita & Dave as on Saturday they held their annual pool party again in aid of the children and for a “hat trick” on Thursday 19th September there will be a Charity Fashion, Shoe and Jewellery SHOW incorporating a Ladies Makeover Day! The Fillies and Nags Show Easy Horse Care’s La Zenia charity shop held their Summer Fashion Show at Alfie’s Place in La Zenia on July 25th. Over 80 people attended and were treated to some of the latest fashions courtesy of Looking Good Boutique who are great supporters of EHCRC. The models were all volunteers from the shop and they were joined on the catwalk by Vicky Feest the La Zenia shop manager. “I want to thank all my girls for their help
today said Vicky. They have been most professional and fantastic sports.” This is more than can be said for fashion icons Gok and Wok who gave fashion tips to the audience. “Thank goodness nobody took any notice of them” said Vicky who confirmed it is only a rumour that one of the pair was actually her husband!! The afternoon was a great success raising over 400 Euro’s on the day for the EHCRC charity. Everyone involved cannot wait for the next show to be booked. Vicky was especially grateful to Alfie for his support in again opening his doors for the charity function. “He even provided a red carpet for the girls to walk down” she added. The EHCRC are now planning their next event at Alfies for the middle of October, the date is to be confirmed. This will be a charity auction of goods and services donated by local businesses and kind supporters. My attitude towards my body has always been somewhat cavalier – I feed it, clothe it, and generally pander to its demands, therefore I believe that it should keep its end of the bargain. I feel my requests are reasonable; I don’t expect it to leap tall building in a single bound, or outrun a speeding bullet, but nowadays leaping anything is completely out of the question, and even a racing snail can give me a run for my money. All things considered I have arrived at pensionable age in pretty good nick, but my progress towards my pension has been marked by phases: Firstly came the ‘Charmed Life’ phase, when my Guardian Angel would pluck me from the jaws of damage on a regular basis. Then came ‘Teenage Invincibility’, a condition that affects all teenagers, leading them to believe that no harm can possibly come to them, because they are all-knowing and invincible, and the rest of the adult world is made up of stupid old fuddy-duddies. After that was the ‘I’ll Be OK’ phase, and mostly I was. Imperceptibly that then merged into the ‘I Used To Be Able To Do That phase, josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk Easily’

where everything was beginning to need an amount of effort and forward planning which had previously been unnecessary. I began going round puddles, so as ‘not to get my shoes wet’ and putting a raincoat on, even if it was only drizzling and I was only ‘going to be out in it for a minute.’ Shopping lists became essential, no longer could I keep the entire stock of household and kitchen goods in my head, I needed physical reminders. However, I could easily dismiss these minor inconveniences as ‘Being Sensible.’ It was somewhere about this time that some unwise person remarked to me that ‘I wasn’t as young as I used to be.’ Piffle! I’m not old! But I have to admit the truth is that I’m going that way – I sit down with an audible ‘Aaah’ to put my socks on. I get up with an ‘Urgh’ to go and get my shoes, because I’ve forgotten to bring them with me. At night, when all is silent except the Limaria dogs, my body creaks and cracks like an oaken galleon on a heavy Atlantic swell. And how is it that my body mass is greater than it used to be, yet I seem to have surplus skin? Surely it should be stretched tight to accommodate the extra poundage? Is my skin getting bigger? It must be – how else can I account for all those wrinkles?

What is it about shoe shops that have this instant pull on my wife? We may be browsing shop windows, perhaps taking a pleasant stroll, or on our way somewhere, but it’s as if my wife’s underwear is lined with iron filings and there is a whacking great magnet strategically placed just inside the entrance, because she is invariably pulled violently into the establishment. I am not alone in this. All my friends tell me that it’s the same with their other halves; they would cross a six-lane highway in the middle of Cairo blindfolded if that’s what it took to get to the shoe shop. I bet if you looked at all the millionaires living in The Seychelles or Grand Cayman, you would find that most of them are ex-shoe shop owners schmoozing around on the hard earned dosh of us working class husbands. I have never had the courage to actually count the number of pairs of shoes/boots/sandals/ flip flops/slippers/wellies that my wife has accumulated, but I am confident that it would represent a sizeable herd of
Jersey cows. If I didn’t know better, I would say that Imelda Marcos must surely be a blood relative. And it’s the same story with handbags. Our women folk gaze like children at Christmastime through the windows of bag shops; their eyes glaze over and as if in a trance, they are compelled to enter. Actually it’s all quite clever, because the purchase of either of these products is a handy justification to purchase the other. “Oh look at those red court shoes, just what I have been looking for to go with my red handbag.” Ah yes I think, but you bought that handbag to go with the red sandals you bought the week before that, which you purchased because you told me that one thing you didn’t possess, was a nice pair of red sandals. But I say nothing. It cracks me up when she tells our friends in all seriousness that I have more shoes than she does. “I bet if you counted the shoes in his wardrobe, and the shoes in my wardrobe, he would have more”, she reports. It’s almost certainly true. But what she doesn’t tell them is that ALL the available space under ALL of the beds, in ALL of the bedrooms, is filled up with ladies shoes. Her shoeboxes are stacked on shelves in the garage and we have purchased pine shoe storage units that

are sitting next to me here in my office. It wouldn’t surprise me to find a pair or two in the refrigerator. She’ll be asking me to move my beer out next. The latest chapter in the shoe epic started a few weeks ago in Santa Pola. We had gone there with friends for the day to just mooch around the town and dream and dribble over the luxury cruisers in the marina, and of course to enjoy a long, leisurely lunch somewhere. Mooched out and having done the marina, we discovered a small restaurant in one of the back streets where we settled for a very pleasant hour or so before the dreaded shopping began. But thankfully only window shopping, because we had mercifully reached the siesta period. Well it wasn’t long before my beautiful other half spotted a pair of must-have sandals with an unspecified price, which, she cooed, would be perfect for our cruise later in the year. But the shop was closed for another two hours and we needed to leave town before that. How sad. Two weeks later we had taken the same friends to Alicante airport and remembering the marvellous footwear, my wife suggested we detour to Santa Pola on the way back so that she could try them on. Problem was, after trudging around a spider web of streets - tracing
and re-tracing our steps - we could not locate the shop and after an excruciating hour, decided to get some lunch in the little restaurant we had previously discovered. But then, no sooner had we parked ourselves when my wife spotted the sought after shoe shop . . . slap bang opposite. Indigestion was assured. Lunch over, my lady shot across the street to try on the wonderful sandals, but then immediate consternation when she was informed by the billionaire shopkeeper, that the price was 40 Euros. Italian crafted you see. “I’m not paying that”, protested my wife. “We’ve traipsed around most of Santa Pola; bought a lunch and notched up God knows how much for parking at the marina.” I told her. “So you bloody well are!” There was no hesitation. “Alright then”, she said. “Debit card please.” And off she marched to the counter. If anyone in Alqueria was interested in statistics then a study of recent data would show an increase in population. Not explainable by birthrate however, only Rosalinda de la Lujuria had given birth recently. This also prompted half of the male population to go into hiding. The increase was by immigration. Perhaps immigration is too grand a word, they simply wandered across the Spanish border into the Pueblo. The Spanish border guards weren’t bothered about people entering Alqueria. They only stopped the anarchic Alquerians entering Spain and making nuisances of themselves. These ‘travellers’ took up residence in the orange grove opposite Loco Paco’s house in the Avenida de Naranjas. These erstwhile itinerants were the ‘Children of the Divine Paco’. They saw Loco Paco as their spiritual leader and Messiah. Paco, oblivious to his new found status was only aware of a lot of noisy scruffy individuals below his bedroom window. The Village Priest, Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido who should have objected to this challenge to his religious authority didn’t mind at all. As an existentialist his only interest in the church was somewhere to live, the offertory and Communion Wine. As Paco appeared at his window so the assembled crowd made the sign of the Celestial Dung Beetle. This was an intricate hand gesture involving all the fingers of the right hand and the second and fourth of the left. Enrique Stenchio tried to emulate the gesture and never played the heckelphone again. Loco Paco became withdrawn and spoke only to his imaginary five foot rodent. The gathered hordes took this to be the ‘Holy Rodent’ which completed the ‘Holy Trinity of the Divine Paco’. Just how Loco Paco became the new Messiah is a mystery. Paco can remember talking about his philosophy of life to some travellers in Órgiva some months ago. He can´t remember much of the conversation as he was well into a Remitroot filled hip-flask. He was sure his oratory was profound however, they always are after a drink or two. As Paco was their new Messiah so they needed its complement and Manuela was singled out for this honour. They believed her to be the conduit to Hell and a servant of the Devil. A bit harsh perhaps but it did add to the legend of Manuela. Manuela has always thought that the ‘Master of Darkness’ had more fun than the puritanical inhabitants of Heaven. How will Manuela react to being the ‘Mistress of Darkness’? How will Paco react to being the Messiah, saviour of thousands? Will it go to his head or will he be the same daft, rambling old Paco? We shall see.

TRANSFERRING PHOTOS TO YOUR COMPUTER You know how some days, you just can’t get your head around the simplest of things. Me Too! In this case, it is the topic for this week’s article that has thrown a curve ball passed me. Well! As you read this, say a soft and heart-felt “Thank You” to the editor for inspiring me into the particular piece. Most cameras today are digital in as much as they capture the ‘real life’ images in thousands of pixels (read PIX as in picture, ELS as in Cells). These dots of colour are stored as numbers, each relating to a colour. The better quality the camera, the higher the number of pixels, the greater the size of the picture and the better the quality of the finished picture. These pictures are stored, usually, on a memory chip that can be removed from the camera. The simplest way of transferring these pictures from your camera to your computer involves connecting your camera to your computer using the, usually, provided USB cable. I’m assuming that your computer is running and the camera turned on! The instant that your computer recognises that you have a memory device (card/camera/video etc.) attached, it will start the options window. One of the options will be “Copy pictures to a folder on my computer”. Highlight this option by a single click on it and the click the button marked “OK”. The ‘Scanner and Camera Wizard’ will now take you through the process of copying / moving the pictures from your camera to the computer. Click on the button marked ‘Next’. Before you, will be a window, that will display some of the pictures that are waiting to be copied. Next to each picture, is a little box that already has a ‘tick’ in it. This just means that the picture has already been selected for copying. At the bottom of the screen on the left hand side are 3 tiny icons. These will allow you to rotate the picture 90 degree in either direction to straighten it and give property information (size, time and date taken, and default name – usually DSCFxxxx. The xxxx is a 4 digit number). If you are happy with everything so far click on the button marked ‘Next’. The next window shows 2 drop-down boxes, a tick box at the bottom and several buttons. The first drop-down box wants to know what name to call them, the default is ‘Picture’. This will be followed by numbers in sequential order (001,002,003 ….). You can leave it as is or change it to something more meaningful to you! The next drop-down box shows where the pictures will go to. This too, can be changed to suit yourself. Under this is a ‘tick’ box that will allow you to delete the pictures from your camera as it copies them to your computer. So, do you want to make a duplicate copy of the pictures or actually move them from your camera to the computer. If moving is your choice then click on the tick box and then on the button marked ‘Next’. The window will change to show your picture(s) being copied/ moved from the camera to the place on your computer that you have asked them to go. If you chose to tick the box, there will be another window displaying the picture being removed (deleted) from the memory chip in the camera. The final window wants to know if you would, now, like to publish these pictures to the web (see notes on Facebook and loosing your rights to these pictures if you do publish them!), Order prints from the web (pretty neat, if you like that sort of thing) or finally just finish with the copying process (this is the default option). Click on the button marked ‘Next’ and you will be rewarded with a window that states proudly that ‘x picture(s) were copied’ to ‘Wherever\picturefolder\. Done!

The Cardinals of Schengen by Michael Barton Flailing arms disappeared as the flames from the burning gasoline shot even higher and engulfed the few heads that bobbed on the surface. We start with a prologue, set in Germany towards the end of the second world war with an insignificant man, Gerhard Schneider, witnessing cargo being unloaded from a U-boat, overseen by Doenitz. The military convoy left with Doenitz before the submarine exploded. No survivors. About the same time a raid on Selsey, south England went horribly wrong. The German fast boat went down. Again, no survivors. The story then begins in Kent, England and moves to the present day. What a dramatic opening with the planned assassination of Jack Hudson, Secretary of State-a high profile figure. The Assassin is utterly wicked, a typically Machiavellian character who was addicted to killing and found it pleasurable. To him, it was much better than any snort of cocaine or a puff of weed. The killing is gruesome-darts of snake venom which are highly toxic, causing rapid paralysis and finally suffocation. Named the pin prick of death. The assassin found it a PLEASURE to watch the Secretary of State die. How sick is that? Brother Peter, nicknamed Hud was in the SAS in Iraq during 1991 to gather intelligence on the movement of the Soviet scud missile launches. Barton reminds us of those shocking images of war when a young officer is brutally killed. Hud was meant to be protecting him: The bullet had entered from behind, just under the neck of his helmet and blown away his face as it exited. Blood and tissue splattered. Blood and brains mixed into one horrible mass, the boy unrecognisable. Sixteen years later and Hud is still possessed by the horror of reality of that moment. His comforter, his security blanket that dulled the pain was his Southern Comfort and because his nerves were shattered, his marriage to Judy hit rock bottom and lead to a divorce but fortunately, an amicable one. He is horrified to discover that his brother Jack has died from a suspected heart attack. When he sees Jack’s corpse he notices a red mark on the right side of his neck and more importantly, fear in his eyes, the kind of fear that Peter had never seen before, as if Jack had been able to see his fate before it

The Spanish government, the Partido Popular is mired in a huge corruption scandal; last Thursday after months of denials PM Rajoy admitted to Parliament that he was personally guilty, but only of over-trusting the ex-party treasurer Luis Barcenas. Some of the largest construction companies in Spain paid donations/bribes totalling tens of millions of Euros to secure building contracts. Rajoy denies ever receiving any of this money, though there is paperwork that suggests otherwise. Conveniently for Rajoy whose been on the PP executive board for 25 years and party leader for10 of those, he was always on the loo or taking a stroll in the garden whenever the brown envelopes stuffed with 500€ notes were delivered. Their power has been built on murder, corruption and greed. It seems that Hud and Judy are lambs to the slaughter. If Hud becomes a condemned man, how is he going to survive? Will his army training give him the mental and physical strength to beat his adversary? To survive? The final showdown reveals a shocking act of betrayal although this thriller does end on a positive note for those survivors. A possible act of reconciliation perhaps? I like Hud’s comment towards the end: If I’m lucky there’ll be a tomorrow. And if I’m not….well then I always had today.” The key question is Does Hud survive? Is he one of the lucky ones? No receipts were given but the amount was noted both in his private records and on the back of the donating firms’ business card. Barcenas would then phone the local mayor of wherever the contract was that was of interest to the donator, tell them to expect a visit from the company representative, to give him a ‘coffee’ and make him ‘welcome.’ Barcenas regularly updated the PP leadership keeping records of when and how much he paid party officials as so called ‘salary top-ups.’ This is denied by the PP. Just two days after Rajoys part admission of guilt Madrid started sabre rattling against Britain and Gibraltar. There was already a build-up of tensions as Madrid have been instructing their lackeys the Guardia Civil to make life difficult for anyone crossing the border, all under the pretence that it’s unfair local Spanish fisherman can’t illegally fish anymore in Gibraltarian waters due an artificial reef that was completed recently. Spain also announced the sale of 20 Mirage jets (that they can’t afford to run) to Argentina, coincidentally another country with economic woes that has a territorial dispute with the UK. Nothing like a war (or threat of one) to detract voters’ attentions from the real issues!

BUSTERS Golf society Friday August 2nd August saw 22 of us heading north up the AP-7 to play at Bonalba , I have to say that the course was in excellent condition , fairways very good and the greens tip top making the course a good test of golf , the best our society could do was for two players only managing to score a one over par 35 stable ford points . Our first tee time was 11:00 so by 12:00 we had all 22 players on the course , what came to mind was the old song ‘ Mad dogs and Englishmen go out

The results for the day were in third place Steve Edwards with 33 points , their was a tie for first place with two players having 35 points but by means of a better back nine our winner was Colin Edwards with Alan Gifford taking second place these three members all received cash prizes, our N T Ps were on the 4th hole Keith Smith the 8th hole Mark Ead and the 11th and 14th holes Alan Gifford all receiving a sleeve of 3 Callaway golf balls for each N T P , our best guest was Brian Smith taking home white and rose wines , the Mini Golf Bar in Quesada donated a prize for our lowest card which guest T Ackroyd took home , finally the football card was won by Paul Cogan After the game we all returned back to the Mini Golf Bar for a couple of beers and snacks that were provided by the bar . Match Report, Las Ramblas, 31st July 2013 The “Marmite Course” of Las Ramblas was, once again, in fine condition and the 28 members enjoyed a day of sunshine with no wind…. hence the sweaty whatsits.. for this, our Two Ball Texas Scramble. Over and above the golf, we don’t have many stories to tell, except it is believed that ‘someone’ from the Silver Category has taken out a contract “Mr Whippy” aka Colin Marsden who spent the Tuesday night in A&E with a broken leg. His “adopted son” John Eyre denies all knowledge, but in all honesty, would you trust a Tottenham supporter? I rest my case your Honour. That said, we do wish Colin a speedy recovery and we hope that he graces our presence in the not too distant future. Back to the golf..and by heck, it were warm out there today, but the greens and the fairways were in fine form and even though it is the “Marmite” course in the Costa Blanca, those that played enjoyed themselves. As already said, it was a 2 Ball Texas Scramble with 10% of the handicaps and it was soon to be evident that those with the lower handicaps were the ones that would dominate and with
the partnership of Roger Nilsen and Joe Kearnes claiming 3rd spot with a very credible 68.6. The runnersup spot was claimed by Joe Dean and Arne Hansson with a very credible 67.8 but wasn’t enough to prevent the winning pair of Steve Higgins and Andy Moore claiming the 1st prize of two meal for two’ vouchers at the sponsor’s restaurant “Asador Don Mariano” with a net score of 66.8. TORREGOLF.EU at Las Colinas Yes Friday 3rd, saw us returning for the 1st. time in probably 2 years, to this lovely course and we were served a treat even with the fairways still showing some of the recent maintenance. The course has now been added to one of regular playing courses. With tee times starting at 08.40 on both the 1st. and 10th was a good idea as it meant we were all going to finish earlier than normal and get into the bar and quench
our throats with some cool beer after a very hot round. As it was a first visit for many of our members it was anticipated that scores would be fairly low and that’s how it worked out with only 9 members breaking the 30 points. El Plantio 2 Golf Society It was the last Tuesday of the month, so as is our usual practise we had the Monthly Medal Competition. Every shot counts so a few members can always be counted on to work hard on getting their moneys worth. One member got stuck in a bunker and it looked very much like we would see a repeat of that famous Manikin Cigar advert, they managed to get an eleven on that hole. The weather was lovely, the temperature had dropped a couple of degrees and the humidity had all but disappeared, so for many of us it was ideal for good golf. One visitor, Josh Reddington on holiday here visiting his Grandfather played out of his socks and came in with a very respectable net 47 and walked off with the best visitors prize, Mel was the other visitor with an excellent score of nett51, well played guys. On Monday I booked a golf
lesson for next week as I was not happy with my swing, I then proceeded to come in 1st with a net 49, I’m thinking, maybe I should cancel that and save myself €20.... A warm Welcome back to Ray Housely, he’s been off for about 6 weeks following an operation, he didn’t get a mention in the positions this week, but no doubt he will be in the thick of it in a few weeks. Third place this week was gamely fought over by 4 members, all scoring a net 56 El Plantio 2 Golf Society members, are full members of the Par 3 course at El Plantio and anyone who would like to join us would be welcome. We meet at 9:00am on Tuesday for our main weekly competition and on Friday and Sunday at 9:00am for a friendly Stableford game. The annual membership of the course is very reasonable

Fairwayz Golf Society Our golf society played at Vistabella today, Thursday 1st August, wow it’s hard to believe it’s that time of the year already! Anyway we had the course to ourselves mostly, but i must admit it was quite warm out there and many litres of ... water was consumed. The course was in superb condition and some respectable scores came in from both categories. Back at the clubhouse, several litres of cider were consumed in exchange for free sun hats, very sensible to wear a sun hat...in the sun! I must stress that we are a golf society and not a drinking society, although we do tend to socialise quite a bit after the game. The results were as follows:Gold Category. 1st - Steve Lawrence 30pts. 2nd - Graham Lawrence - (no relation) 29pts. Best front 9 - Steve Hamilton 16pts. Best back 9 - Dave Harwood 16pts.
