Fifteen people have been injured after an aircraft heading for São Paulo from Madrid had to make an emergency landing in Fortaleza on the north-east coast of Brazil due to turbulence. Panic broke out among the 200 passengers on board, and 15 of them sustained bruising and fractures. Sources from the national airline TAM say severe turbulence struck when the plane, which had set off from Madrid at 22.30hrs Spanish time last night (Monday), crossed over Ecuador. The airline has apologised to all affected passengers and arranged an onward flight to the south-eastern city of São Paulo for those who are not injured for later that same evening, which would have been the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) in Spain.

Galván gives his side of the story

The pederast Daniel Galván, who is accused of the abuse of a minor in 2004, has begun his testimony at the Court of Instruction Number 4, after arriving from the Soto del Real prison, where he was admitted on August 6 after his pardon was revoked in Morocco by King Mohamed VI. A large crowd of onlookers and media gathered. Armed officers and local police set up a safety barriers in the vicinity of the courts to avoid any possible incidents as he was escorted, accompanied by a dozen policemen, from a police vehicle to the front door of the courthouse. A representative of the Ministerio Público and the lawyers of both the accused and the family of the child were present in court. This is the second citation in this case at the Court of Instruction No. 4, Torrevieja. The first hearing was suspended because the minor, who had been in a holding centre, had escaped, according to information given by the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Comunitat Valenciana (TSJCV). The testimony of the child about the incident in 2004 is vital, as the complaint by the parents of the child is generic, ie , although there was possible sexual abuse, there is ‘no detail whatsoever’. Galván, through his lawyer Manuel Maza, has pleaded innocent of the alleged abuse to the child, which it is claimed occurred in Torrevieja. Maza explained that Galván and the family met in Torrevieja when the family of the child, who was then between four and five years old, showed interest in buying an apartment in the building where Galván resided. Apparently this sale process required someone who spoke English, so they asked Galván, who is multilingual, to act as intermediary. According to counsel, the friendship endured to the degree that he frequently was left to care for the child. However, the friendship deteriorated over a small traffic accident, when the family wished to include Galván on the insurance manifest, in order to avoid the consequences of the accident. He refused and the child’s father ‘called him a coward and threatened him,’ and the lawyer considers that this disagreement may be the origin of the complaint against his client. He stressed that the family ‘presents very few facts, and without any proof; such as the date on which the minor allegedly told his mother what had happened’. In Counsel’s view, there are contradictions in the statements put forward by both parties and dismissal was requested until the matter had been reconsidered. After his appearance the pederast was led in handcuffs to a Guardia Civil vehicle to be transferred back to the prison of Soto del Real, near Madrid , Daniel Galván, 65, was sentenced in 2011 to 30 years in prison for abusing 11 children aged between 2 and 14 years. The sentence was upheld on appeal, although at the end of July he was released in a deal involving the collective pardon of 48 Spanish prisoners. However, after protests by the public King Mohamed VI revoked the pardon, and Galván was re-arrested in Murcia.

Three babies are receiving preventive medication and are in single rooms after the bacterium Klebsiella was found in the mother and child area of the Hospital Santa Lucía, according to the Consejería de Sanidad. This is the same type of bacteria that recently caused the death of a premature newborn in the Unidad de Neonatos del Hospital Reina Sofía de Córdoba. The bacterium was detected last week in routine weekly checks. These checks are conducted at least twice as frequently in the operating theatres because of the heightened risk of infection in these areas. An official spokesman stressed that there was no danger to children and said that in a hospital, as elsewhere, there are numerous types of bacteria, so controls and treatments to prevent infections and continuously updated. It is reported that no patient has developed any disease related to these bacteria, but the Hospital Santa Lucía has launched the appropriate protocol for eliminating it, is providing preventative medication to patients and taking measures to avoid contagion.A Hospital spokesman said that the situation was under control, and the three babies are in single rooms ‘because there is enough space.’

bird of prey feturned to the wild

A young Bonelli’s Eagle has been returned to the wild after being found wounded near Carrascoy. Agentes Medioambientales de la Comunidad released the bird last week. It was rescued after being found injured by an irrigation pond near the Sierra de Carrascoy . The species, which is endangered, is the subject of the Programa de Seguimiento Biológico y Reproductivo (Biological Monitoring and Reproductive Programme) held annually by the Dirección General de Medio Ambiente de la Consejería de Presidencia (Environmental Directorate General of the Ministry of the Presidency). In the last census carried out in the Region, only 22 breeding pairs were located; thus the estimated national population is about 700 pairs. Before its release, the bird was ringed for identification. The bird has been recovering for more than two months at the Centro de Fauna Silvestre de El Valle, in Murcia. He had been suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration. According to the Agentes Medioambientales, the bird, a young male, probably became disoriented, and lost from the parent birds too early, before he was able to hunt for himself. Almost to the point of death, he was carefully treated by the veterinary team at the Centro, who hydrated and fed him until he was able to fend for himself. After reaching the optimal weight, he was released from a high cliff at the Centro de Recuperación de Albacete. According to officials, the threats to the species are varied: Poisons, fire, disease and electrocution on power lines, where the birds perch to locate prey, all affect these birds. In 2011 and 2012 in Alhama a total of seven Bonelli eagles fell victim to electrocution.

horses killed in stable fire

Two horses have been killed in a fire at a warehouse used as stabling, and for the storage of straw. The fire, whose cause has not yet been determined, commenced at around 1.45 in the early hours of the morning, and swept quickly through the building in Calle Cabeza del Caballo.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013 The Bomberos from Lorca and Águilas attended the blaze, working all night to extinguish the fire, which eventually became extinct around 7am. Apart from the death of the two horses, there was extensive damage to the warehouse and its contents.

dog restrictions checked

Members of the Protectora Madrileña ‘El Refugio’ (Madrid Protection ‘El Refugio’) have travelled to Águilas ‘to check the level of restrictions placed on people who have dogs.’ They are objecting to a sign that reads Prohibido pasear perros y excrementos- bajo multa (Walking of dogs and excrement prohibited on penalty of fines) The members have arrived in the town ‘to check the level of discrimination against people with dogs.’ The Protectora has produced a story in which ‘Manchita’ a bitch weighing 10 kilos, tries to access different locations in the Municipality. The aim of the story is to make a change in the law so that people who have dogs have equal access to public spaces as do those without dogs.

storms create over 100 emergencies

Almost 100 emergencies have been attended during the three days of storms in the region. According to meteorologist Luis Bañón the region has had the equivalent of 6% of the annual rainfall during this time - more than 300 litres per square metre. He said the gota de fría ‘is not usual in August. The rainfall corresponds to the months of September and October. Parts of the Community have experienced weather classed as ‘severe’, such as in Calabardina, Águilas, and places in the north east and the Altiplano, while Yecla and Jumilla experienced hail storms. The Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias managed a total of 98 issues related to heavy rain, with Murcia and Águilas being most affected, and the 112 emergency telephone number handled a total of 103 storm-related calls. The streets of Águilas were the hardest hit area, with 27 litres per square metre falling in just two hours and forcing

3

the temporary closure of the D -14. Another of the hardest hit areas was the Playa de Las Delicias, where the Rambla de Las Culebras overflowed. Although the rain was not as heavy in the town, ground runoff from further inland swelled the flow, causing flooding at the Rambla mouth. However, other than mud and debris, there was no other material damage. A tornado struck in Lorca. The Diputaciones Lorquinas of La Parroquia and La Hoya experienced a waterspout, which lasted for fifteen minutes. Although the streets were inundated with water, there was no major damage. The Servicio de Emergencias was called to the Rambla de Ramonete, due to the level of water and the amount of debris being carried along by the flood. The road to the coastal development of Puntas de Calnegre was closed, and troops were called to the Rambla de Puntas, where the water level was giving concern. In Albudeite a landslide caused the partial collapse of one of the terraced houses situated on the right bank of the Río Mula. The landslide caused only material damage, and mainly affected the riverside footpath. The areas was sealed off by the Bomberos and the Policía Local to prevent further accidents to walkers, and because of the risk of further landslides. On the Thursday the Bomberos del Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento de la Región de Murcia attended 61 call-outs: 32 were to pump out flood water, 14 to extinguish fires, and 8 were rescues.

Ten-figure sums of euros still circulating in pesetas

Nearly 1.7 billion euros in pesetas are still stashed in houses throughout the country, according to the Bank of Spain. Some 874 million euros’ worth of the old currency, which was phased out in early 2002, are in notes and 807 million in coins. Last year alone, the Bank of Spain changed 16 million euros – 2,662 million pesetas – and in July this year, two million euros were handed out in exchange for 333 million of the former currency. Around 45 per cent of pesetas as yet unchanged will never be handed in, since they are being kept by collectors, small notes or coins held by Spaniards as ‘souvenirs’, or are deteriorated or out of the country – many are believed to be in purses and wallets of onetime tourists to Spain who kept them as a collector’s item due to their minimal value if exchanged, and some hang onto their coins and notes believing that one day they may be worth a lot more money than their face value. Once the euro came in on January 1, 2002, the government – then under PP leader José María Aznar – introduced a three-month phasing-out period for pesetas, whereby they were still accepted until March 31, 2002 – after which they could be exchanged at banks and other currency outlets until June 30. In the first nine months or so of 2002, getting euro notes changed for coins was a difficult exercise because there were not enough of these about in the country. From July 1 that year, anyone who wanted to exchange their pesetas for euros had to do so in person at the Bank of Spain. The very last day upon which pesetas can be exchanged is New Year’s Eve in 2020, the day before the 19th anniversary of the introduction of the euro to Spain.

Spain to simplify Employment contracts

Spain’s Minister of Labour today announced plans to simplify the paperwork involved in hiring workers, reducing the former minefield of conditions to just 5 categories of contracts: Permanent; Temporary; Relief; Work experience and Apprenticeships. According to an article by El Pais, there are currently 41 different formulas for hiring workers in Spain, accompanied by a mass of different incentive arrangements provided by the government, such as reduced Social Security contributions. “The existence of a high number of formulae and a

Spanish woman, 28, arrested over Brit hit-and-run death on Costa Blanca

A woman aged 28 who did not have a driving licence has been caught and arrested over a hit-and-run incident leading to the death of a British pedestrian in Torrevieja (Alicante) in February. The accused, a Spanish national, is said to have been driving a car she owned when knocked down a 74-yearold expatriate crossing the C/ Rodrigo on the urbanisation La Siesta, exactly six months ago today. He was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later from his injuries. The woman is said to have left the victim lying on the tarmac and fled the scene, but police recognised her vehicle some months later and tracked her down. According to the Guardia Civil, the driver – identified only by her initials of S.P.G., tried to sell the car immediately after the accident to avoid being caught. She has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failure to provide assistance, and driving without a licence, and has been remanded in custody.

THOUSANDS OF BRITISH/EU CITIZENS COME FORWARD TO RECLAIM AN ESTIMATED £400 MILLION FROM THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT IN OVERPAID INHERITANCE TAX

• T ax loop hole means up to 40,000 Britons were overcharged almost 100% Inheritance Tax by the Spanish Tax Authorities for their properties / assets inherited in Spain • Conservative estimates put the total amount to be reclaimed by UK families at £400 million (€490 million). • However, the average reclaim amount currently being handled by Spanish Legal Reclaims is £12,000 (€15,000) • Does this affect you? Thousands of British/EU citizens have now come forward to reclaim up to £400 million in overpaid inheritance tax (IHT) by the Spanish government after the Spanish tax loop was recently discovered. With the average reclaim amount currently being £12,000, higher than the original estimated average of £10,000. Background: Up to 40,000* UK families who have been lucky enough to be gifted with an inherited property in Spain have fallen foul of a Spanish tax loop that has seen them overcharged Spanish IHT (inheritance tax) to the tune of £400 million, whilst Spanish residents paid close to 0% IHT. • The different IHT treatment between residents and non-residents recently led the European Commission to take Spain before the European Court of Justice on March 7 2012, as it is the European Commission’s belief that the current Spanish inheritance tax provisions infringe EU treaty freedoms when either the heirs or deceased persons are non-residents in Spain. • “Experts state it is very risky to wait for the ECJ ruling. It is impossible to know when the ECJ ruling will be taken and due to legal time limits cases may have expired by then and the claim could not be filed anymore.” In addition, the sooner claims are filed, the sooner people affected may get their refund. However, the Spanish IHT rules are still in force and conservative estimates based on data from the Spanish Tax Authorities has indicated that 60,000 UK families have been overcharged IHT by an average of £12,000 each in the last 8 years. However, only 40,000 are still able to make a claim due to the Spanish legal time limits, which stop claimants attempting to make a claim after 4 years from the tax payment date. Experts believe it will take 2 more years for the Spanish Authorities to amend the IHT Laws so, any non Spanish resident who inherit in the future cal also claim almost 100% of the inheritance taxes to be paid.

complex system of incentives constitute an obstacle for the small businessman,” Báñez told the congressional committee on employment. She said the technical work on simplifying the system was well underway with input from all social agents. A makeover of the hiring process has been one of the long-standing demands of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), the country’s largest employer group. Báñez said the government also plans to bring together available government incentives for taking on workers under a single legal text in order to “facilitate hiring and give legal security to workers.” The minister also reviewed the impact of the reforms to the laws governing the labor market that were introduced by the government of PM Mariano Rajoy in February of last year. Since the introduction of the changes, which made it easier and cheaper to sack workers, the number of people out of work has risen by almost a million to just under 6 million. Báñez said the growth in exports shows the reforms are working in that area of the economy, and insisted they would also bear fruit in areas related to domestic demand once the economic situation returns to normal. “Although the Spanish economy is emerging from the crisis, it is still in recession, but the export sector is creating jobs,” she said. “It is domestic demand that is pulling down economic activity and when the domestic economy returns to growth, the result of the labor reform will be evident. “If the model is working for the export sector, which has known how to benefit from its advantages, when the economy gets back to normal, the advantages will spread to the general economy.”

Spain seeking lift with Madrid’s 2020 ‘austerity bid’

For a sports-obsessed country in the grip of a debilitating recession and stained by allegations of political corruption, winning the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games in Madrid is exactly the tonic Spain needs. At least that is what government and bid officials are arguing, according to Reuters News Agency, as they attempt to convince International Olympic Committee (IOC) members the capital deserves to stage the world’s biggest and most expensive sporting event instead of Istanbul or Tokyo. As ordinary Spaniards are forced to swallow cuts in wages and benefits, spending is slashed on public services such as health and education and unemployment hovers just below 30%, Madrid has presented a bid characterised as the “Austerity Games”. Local officials say that with much of the infrastructure already in place, it will be the first time the projected Games budget of some $3.1 billion exceeds investment of just under €1.5 Bln in projects linked to the hosting of the event

but not directly related. That compares with Istanbul’s massive non-Games budget of around €13 Bln, dwarfing expected Games expenditure of €2.2 Bln. Tokyo, which hosted the Games in 1964, is also planning to incorporate existing venues and has estimated a nonGames budget of around €3.33 Bln compared to €2.57 for the actual event. Madrid’s strategy, their 3rd Olympic bid in a row after failed attempts for the 2012 and 2016 editions, requires a delicate balancing act. On the one hand struggling Spanish tax payers, and particularly residents of the capital, must be persuaded that the long-term benefits of hosting the Olympics outweigh the economic cost. At the same time, IOC members must be convinced that a Madrid Olympics will be a resounding success - something like the Barcelona Games in 1992 despite the drive to keep a lid on spending. Perez-Tome, head of marketing for the nationwide Marca Sports Cafe chain, says she has sympathy with her compatriots who are angry that the Games would suck in cash which could be used to fund hospitals and schools. At the same time, she believes an event like the Olympics will help pull Spain out of its current slump, in both economic and psychological terms. “I understand them but I don’t agree,” the 31-year-old told Reuters at the chain’s central Madrid branch on Paseo de Recoletos, as a host of television screens showing sports events flickered nearby. “I don’t agree because this is an investment and investments almost always pay off at some point,” she added. “Maybe it’s not the best time to be diverting cash from other areas but the money will come back. “Considering everything, we are experiencing at the moment Spain needs a boost, and this is a brilliant opportunity.”

More than 3000 Spaniards Book One-Way Trip to Mars

An ambitious project to colonise Mars within the next 10 years has so far received 3,621 registrations from Spaniards seeking to be amongst the first humans to live on the red planet. Code named ‘Mars One’, a Dutch not for profit foundation, aims to establish a permanent human settlement on the planet in 2023. The search began for astronauts in April, 2013 and since then more than 165,000 people have registered their desire to leave the confines of planet Earth and head to the untouched climate of Mars. Aashima Dogra, spokeswomen for the Mars One project said “The Mars One Application Program is turning out to be the most desired job vacancy in the world. People from over 140 countries are looking towards the final frontier and envisioning their life on another planet”. The foundation says the technology exists today to make this project a reality which will integrate well tested components readily available from industry

China ranks 2nd with 13,124 registrations whilst Brazil grabs 3rd with 8,686. Interestingly, more than 8,000 Indians have signed up for the one-way trip to Mars positioning them in 4th on the list ahead of Russia in 5th with 7,138. To date 6,999 Brits have registered their interest to become astronauts ranking them 6th on the list. However, intergalactic British Ex-pats maybe disappointed upon arrival to Mars as it is unknown whether the Sky TV digital footprint signal will be extended to Mars or if they will have internet access. Supporting your local businesses has never been more important. Many small towns are seeing their streets taken over by national chains and giant companies, so it is vital that the smaller, local shops, run by people from the community, are not taken for granted. The services these places tend to offer are usually second to none and once they are gone, we will miss them. Therefore we all need to ensure that we do our bit and support our local business. Carrefour sees profits slide over Spanish downturn

Carrefour, the world’s 2nd-largest retailer, reported a sharp improvement in profitability at its core French business as a turnaround plan started to pay off, raising hopes it can do the same in ailing southern Europe. Carrefour has struggled for years in Europe, partly due to a reliance on the hypermarket format it pioneered as time-pressed customers shop more locally and online and buy non-food goods from specialists. The Group announced today how its first-half recurring operating profit rose 4.9% to €766 million, just below the average forecast of €771 million in a poll of 6 analysts. However, whilst profits in France improved by 2.8% of sales, profits in Spain and Italy stood at 0.4% of sales, and were dragging the average down to 3.4% across their European stores.

Capital outflow from Spain hits €541.3 mln in June

Spain reported a capital outflow of €541.3 million in June, according to last data published on Friday by the Bank of Spain. In annual terms, this figure is 104 times less than that of June 2012, when the country registered an outflow of €56.631 billion, while on a monthly basis the figure is considerably below the outflow registered in May, a total of €5.057 billion. Spain had registered 6 consecutive months of capital inflow, from September 2012 to April 2013 when the inflow of capital reached €1.95 billion, however this positive trend broke in March when there was an outflow of capital of €5.168 billion. In 2012, the country registered an outflow of capital of €179.221 billion, which meant a 1.44% increase when compared with 2011. 2012 was a difficult year for Spain as the government asked for a bailout in June to recapitalize the country’s banks, while rumors of a sovereign bailout did not disappear easily. Meanwhile, the Spanish Banking Association reported on Friday Spanish banks had improved their profits, earning a 67% more in the first semester of 2013 (€5.310 billion) than in the same period of 2012

Health Care For Adults and Children

Good bacteria in the gut protect obese people from heart attacks and strokes, according to scientists. A study has found a link between the medical problems caused by being overweight, and the bacterial species in the intestines. People with less of these bugs are more likely to develop metabolic disorders such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. A flora with decreased bacterial richness seems to function entirely differently to the healthy variety with greater diversity. In a report by Mail Online Professor Jeroen Raes, of Vrije University in Belgium, is quoted: ‘This is an amazing result with possibly enormous implications for the treatment and even prevention of the greatest public health issue of our time. But we are not there yet. Now we need studies in which we can monitor people for a longer period.’ Metabolic conditions are becoming endemic because of people failing to exercise and eating foods that are high in sugar and fat.It is expected obesity levels will nearly double from 400 million in 2005, to more than 700 million in 2015 – and the trend is expected to persist at least until 2030. Professor Raes and his colleagues examined the intestinal flora of 169 obese and 123 non-obese Danes and found those with low species diversity had more metabolic abnormalities, such as increased body fat and insulin resistance. Professor Raes said: ‘We were able to distinguish between two groups based on their intestinal flora: people with a large richness

of bacterial species in their intestines, and people with less bacterial species. ‘A species-rich bacterial flora appeared to function differently compared to the poorer variety. It was surprising to see obese and non-obese people were found in both groups.’ The scientists found the group with lower species richness in the intestinal flora were more susceptible to developing obesity-related conditions and chronic inflammation. The obese people in this group were more at risk of cardiovascular conditions than the obese people in the other group. The results are important because they suggest it is not only weight gain and dietary habits that play a role in the development of medical complications in obese people. In a second study published in the same journal, Professor Stanislav Ehrlich of the National Institute of Agronomic Research in Jouy-enJosas, France, showed eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can boost gut microbes. He looked at 49 obese or overweight individuals and found increasing consumption of high-fibre foods led to more bacterial richness and improved some clinical symptoms associated with obesity. The finding supports previous research linking diet composition to the structure of gut microbe populations - and suggests a permanent change may be achieved through adopting an appropriate diet.

Whilst I was in Barcelona I was surprised how many people contacted me asking where they could find a copy. Jokingly I said at the time it was a good year to give the calendar a break as 13 is an unlucky number. As it turned out the first 6 months of this year have been! This comparatively insignificant item in the Hobart (Australia) Mercury, published on Thursday October 4th 1942, first alerted the World to the massacre, during the previous month, of a number of Missionaries in Papua New Guinea, who, in the face of Japanese advances, had opted to stay in the territory and carry on their work, regardless of the consequences. It later transpired that in all, some 330 church workers, primarily occupied in offering medical care to the indigenous population, and none armed or in any way involved in the war, had been executed by the Japanese during that fateful September as they prepared to move south from their beachhead at Gona, along the Kokoda Trail towards the capital, Port Moresby. Many, both men and women, were brutally and publicly beheaded in a demonstration to the Papuan people that the Christian God was impotent, unable to save these European adventurers; whose amazing sacrifice, has recently been recognised in a decision to commemorate the Martyrs of Papua New Guinea each year on September 2nd, the date on which these atrocities is believed to have started. For myself, this story has a particular resonance, as for a while in the late seventies I lived and worked in Papua and was able to visit many remote areas of this Country, including sections of the Kokoda Trail, which even then still abounded with evidence of those times, with numerous graves and wrecks of military equipment littering the jungle. And, contrary to the intentions of the invading army, the evidence from the many local people we met suggested that most Papuans had found the quiet submission and devotion of these Christian martyrs clear evidence of the truth and value of their faith. So I believe there is much we can learn from these twentieth century martyrs; their dedication, their commitment to their cause and their willingness to put service and the welfare of others above their own wellbeing. If only I could have a fraction of their faith! Further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org . Q:

I understand that if I sell my property I needtothink about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax , and how is it calculated? A . Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited , but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realize that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities. The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation: The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. Plusvalia tax = Catastral value of the land x Yearly percentage of value’s increase x Number of years of ownership x Tax rate The yearly percentage of value’s increase and the tax rate are fixed by the Town Halls. They are established locally. Up to now, when a Town Hall had updated the catastral values, usually with really high increases of the values compared to the existing ones, article 107.3 of the Law had established that on the following five years after the revision of the values, the Town Halls had to apply a deduction of 40 to 60 % to the catastral value. If a Town Hall made not contemplation of this rule teh law established an automatic deduction of 60%. However new Law passed in 2012 has changed that situation allowing the Town Halls to eliminate

those deductions, which is why a loto of people are suddenly paying much higher rates and find themselves with an unfairly high plusvalíaa tax when they sell. On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money form this seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest. For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees. The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

ON YOUR MARKS – GET SET, GET READY TO GO! With the summer nearly over and temperatures down to a more comfortable level, the ‘LION COUNTRY’ country music nightspot at La Molata will be opening up it’s doors again to start their new season at 8.00pm on FRIDAY 20 SEPTEMBER. Maintaining their usual high standard of entertainment, the artist appearing on this night will be the ever popular, and superbly talented RED STROKES. Always a favourite at Lion Country, Red always performs a good mix of traditional and modern ‘country’ songs including a wide choice of line dancing numbers – and promises to do the same this time! No tickets are required and, with entry priced at just €5.00 per person, you’d be hard pressed to find a better evening’s entertainment anywhere in the area. With it’s new sound and lighting system in place, ‘Lion Country’ is – by far – the biggest, and best Country Music Venue in the Murcia Region. Boasting a large dance floor, the venue is also a licensed premises, with drinks at Spanish prices. Their hosts, Antonio & Cheryl, also maintain a superb kitchen; so much so that advance telephone bookings for food are strongly recommended to avoid being disappointed on the night, and should be made direct to Cheryl on 619 003 022 – allowing her plenty of time to ‘buy in’ the appropriate stock. Also in attendance during the evening, should you want to ‘top up’ your line dancing or western regalia – or simply need a new pair of boots – will be ‘Cody’s Corner’ Western Stall. FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER heralds the return of another of their favourite acts in the form of the fantastic live CM duo, all the way from Benidorm, THE PROSPECTORS will be bringing along their own ‘special’ brand of country music involving live performances on fiddle, mandolin and guitars. Once seen never forgotten, and well worth the €5.00 entrance fee. Don’t miss these guys – they’re a real class act! With the popular & multitalented JIMMY VINCENT scheduled for FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER, and the fabulous KRISTINE KELLY – a brand new face (and voice) to LION COUNTRY – the rest of 2013 is all ‘up and ready’ to go.

We ask you to remember that Lion Country is not a private enterprise and that any income in excess of expenses will be donated to the F.A.S.T. scheme currently active on Camposol. All of us here at the Sol Times would like to pass on our condolences to Sam and his family following the recent, tragic loss of Jordi, Sam’s father and chef at the Spice Villa. Following Jordi’s death, the restaurant has now re-opened. The new chef has covered for Jordi in the past and customers were blissfully unaware that Jordi was away working in Torrevijeca, and there was, in fact, a different chef at the helm. A great sign that he comes with fabulous credentials! Whilst Sam is away in India with his family, please continue to show your support for Sam and the staff by eating at the Spice Villa and sampling their amazing food. Sam will return in the middle of September. Jordi will be greatly missed by many.

Accessorise Your Home Apart from complimenting your newly painted walls with soft furnishings and effective flooring, home decor accessories in a room are just as equally important. Accessories ranging from flowers in a contemporary vase to art pictures hanging on your walls, all add the finishing touches to any room. Above all, accessories add personality to a room, they inject your own personal touch making your home unique to you and comfortable and inviting for you and your family. Your accessories tell a story about you to guests. Plus, they make your home more inviting and comfortable for you and your family – everyone likes being surrounded by things they love.

The Perfect Dresser

Bring order to a well-stocked dining-room dresser

• Cover shelves with washable fabric and secure with Velcro. • Secure plates by fitting a café-style curtain rod. • Keep tablecloths in a simple box to keep fresh and clean • Use a set of containers to store everyday cutlery, dinner candles and napkin rings. • Keep a tray handy for transporting small items, such as cutlery and napkins, to the dining table. • Floral decorations, whether artificial or fresh, add colour to the dresser and table. • Protect delicate china from dust with cloches or bell jars.

Ideas for Painting an Old Dresser

• Give your dresser a gorgeous antique look by painting it with a rich wood stain. Sand off any old paint, use a tack cloth to remove dust and debris, and then paint it with a couple of coats of stain. Paint the drawer knobs with gold paint to add some sparkle to the piece and give it a rustic look. • Give your dresser a two-toned look using two shades of the same color. Select a color you like, and then select a shade lighter or darker than that color. Paint the base of your dresser and the knobs the darker shade, and paint drawers the lighter shade, or vice versa. • Paint your dresser a color that will go well in your room. Then adhere pretty contact paper or wallpaper to the drawer fronts. You can even apply paper to the inside of the dresser too. • If you’re a talented artist, paint a mural on either the long side of your dresser, covering the drawers, or on the two short sides. For example, paint a pretty landscape, seascape, or a picture of animals you love.

While there are a few basic principles for arranging accessories, you don’t need a degree in interior design to get great-looking results. Experiment, and don’t be afraid to try something different. After all, rules are made to be broken, and what’s most important is that the arrangements satisfy you!

Getting Started Sort through your hand-me-downs, heirlooms, collectibles or other unrelated pieces to determine what you want to use. Old pictures, keepsakes tucked away in storage, and anything that is important to you adds personality to your home’s décor. If you plan to add large pieces of art to your room, plan for this early in your design scheme. Large pieces of art and collections can have major impact on a room’s décor.

Achieving Balance Balance keeps arrangements from looking lopsided. Balanced arrangements can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical arrangements are perfectly equal on both sides of a central line, are the easiest to arrange and create a more formal atmosphere. If you have a variety of pieces in different sizes, shapes and colours, try an asymmetrical arrangement. Asymmetrical arrangements create an informal look by balancing the visual weight of the objects.

Say It With Flowers Silk or fresh flowers brighten the atmosphere in your home. Experiment with the following: • Use old urns, water pitchers, and teapots as vases; collectibles make great containers for flower arrangements. • Take your favourite vase or bowl to a florist for a custom-designed arrangement. • Float two or three blooms, such as gerbera daisies or rose petals, in a favourite crystal bowl. Add floating candles to create a romantic evening atmosphere.

• Fill a clear glass vase with a bouquet of loose flowers. Anchor with coloured marbles for a casual look. • Arrange several small vases to create a centrepiece. Fill each with the same type of flower or a mixture of different stems.

Decorating With Art You will be surprised at the important role that art pictures play in home decor accessories. Not only do pictures add your own personality into the room, they absorb noise and can actually help change the illusion of a rooms’ shape if placed in the right places. ~ Horizontal landscape pictures help widen a room ~ Portrait floral pictures help give the illusion of height ~ One large picture reflected through a mirror gives the sensation of additional broader space. Whatever your artwork includes – valuable prints, family photographs, or originals from your kids – you want it to capture people’s attention. Large paintings are more effective when displayed alone on walls. However, small pieces have more impact when grouped together. When choosing frames, coordinate with other existing frames and the overall look of the room. Buy quality frames and make sure there aren’t any gaps at the corners and check the finish for flaking or discoloration.

Create Illusions With Mirrors Mirrors are great to help create the illusion of space. By cleverly placing mirrors on an adjacent wall to a picture or something that is interesting in your room, will reflect the image and add a sense of space. For darker rooms, hang a decorative mirror near a window. The light will then bounce off the mirror into the room portraying more natural much-needed light back into the area. To give the illusion of depth in a room paint one of your walls in a darker contrasting color to your other walls. Then hang a mirror on that darker wall. This instantly gives the additional sense of depth to the dimensions of the room. Accessories play a crucial part in your home decorating; you can change the look of your room simply by adding flower arrangements and plants, grouping favourite photo’s together or simply buying new cushion covers!

your home your garden Camposol D Sector Community Group’s Summer BBQ

The evening of Saturday 24th August saw 124 guests both from D Sector and other parts of Mazarron enjoying their evening at The Club House on Camposol. The occasion was the group’s Summer BBQ. 13 tables where arranged on The Club House terrace with its beautiful views of the Golf Course with the mountains in the background. The weather was perfect for dining and dancing outside and the music was provided by Martin Ross, who is a favourite entertainer of our group and was great as usual. The BBQ was cooked by Richard who is now the chef at The Club House and may be remembered from his Restaurant “Ricardo’s” in the Port. Richard cooked up a delicious combination of chicken, burger and sausage which was accompanied with a delicious salad and a jacket potato. The raffle was very well supported with the 15 prizes being beautifully presented by Maureen and Clive Gritt who give invaluable support to the Group. Maureen also provided a prize for each table as an added bonus. Everyone enjoyed the evening which was a great success. Our thanks also go to The Golf Club and their staff who worked so hard for us.

Camposol ‘B CLEAN’ Gardening Group

The Community Gardening Group ‘B Clean’ was formed about 4 years ago. Its aim remains; to keep the ‘common areas’ of our sector neat and tidy and to generally do whatever work is necessary to keep our part of Camposol looking great. As our volunteers have depleted we are now unable to continue providing this service effectively in the same way. Our application, for B Clean to become a Legally Registered Community Group, still awaits approval. This will allow us to collect subscriptions from willing residents to be used solely for sector care and maintenance purposes, including paying someone to carry out tasks we are no longer able to take on. If you are interested this scheme, and/or can offer any physical help, please let us know. Information from HELEN 968199506 or email helencjwhite@ yahoo.co.uk The next ‘B Clean’ meeting will be at ‘Trevis Bar’ on Tuesday 1st October at 4 p.m.

Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group

Q: When is a garden (strictly speaking) not a garden? A: When its a well tended public space created by the I’m sure everyone living on Camposol has seen at least one of the fantastic communual spaces that have been populated by plants, urns, trees and personal ornaments to make them special. So who are the people behind these little oases? I’m pleased to say that some of them belong to our Group of volunteers and we do our best to raise money for membrane and stone chips so that the areas can be expanded. Behind the scenes there is a busy network of people working away to make our environment look great. Parque Los Palacios is the pride of our urbanisation and a lovely space to hold events or just sit to reflect and relax. Without these gardens created by volunteers, Camposol would be much diminished. It not only looks good, but sends a message that residents can group together to work on communual projects and reap the benefits of a great social group. Being a retiree myself, I have found that like minded people who have the aim to improve Creations of Gardens and our environment are also Re-style great fun and a good social group. On your travels around Garden Maintenance Camposol, look out for our yellow T-shirted volunteers and give them a wave Construction of Pergolas of approval. I think they deserve it! Amongst the green, hilly beauty of the Basque country region, within the village of Azpeitia, the Sanctuary of Loyola lies along the river Urola. The highly expressive, and elaborately decorative architecture - known as a typically Spanish Baroque style, called Churrigueresque - embodies the structure of this shrine, basilica and museum that was once home to San Ignatius Lopéz de Loyola (Saint Ignatius of Loyola). The founder of the Jesuit order was once a soldier, who after having peculiar visions, turned and dedicated his life to priesthood. This order began a radical interpretation of Catholicism, which made its mark on both the New and Old World. The art museum on the site now houses various pieces of Saint Ignatius’ writings and belongings, as well as religious artefacts and objects that have been discovered over the centuries. There are also a number of separate edifices set around the grounds to commemorate other Jesuit saints. Saint Ignatius feast day is held on the 31st of July each year, and is a good time to visit the site as a ceremony and celebration is held. The large private gardens that stretch out to its west and the surrounding mountains of the region offer a pleasant and peaceful environment for visitors to the site, as well as guests staying at the affordable accommodation premises available. As its name suggests, the Sanctuary of Loyola, regardless of ones religious beliefs, indeed creates a ‘sanctuary’ for anyone. NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS

On the face of it, the idyllic Andalucía hills forming a backdrop to Estapona are an unlikely lair for a whistleblower whose revelations could threaten a country’s senate and expose the European Union to charges of cover-up and fraud. When Latvian anti-corruption dissident John Christmas rumbled Latvian state deceitfulness, his primary need was to produce and film the evidence in a secluded and tranquil area. Magic Sound Recording Studios, a company that has world-class artistes on its client base, was happy to oblige. The dissident, dubbed the Julian Assange of suspect politicians and Russian oligarchs, used the hidden studio to provide the camera work and sound track for his explosive video. Understandably, banks, Russian oligarchs and complicit politicians are not looking forward to Christmas. The dissenter was the whistleblower from Parex Bank of Latvia. The nationalisation of this bank brought about the Latvian financial crisis on November 8, 2008. Consequently, the European Union (EU) was obliged to bail out Latvia, a country as big as the Republic of Ireland. The political exile slipped into the studios on July 22. His purpose was to produce a Youtube video, Latvia EBRD Fraud 2013. It was an instant hit it received thousands of hits within days of its release on August 23. The aim is to reach 100,000 viewers and generate enough people power to expose corruption in high circles. The revelatory video is a public humiliation for moneychangers who thought they had stagemanaged what is possibly the biggest heist of public money in the history of Baltic States. Magic Sound Recording Studios is visible at the beginning of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APZ-E-X0Cow http://www.magicsound.com/services.htm

The Hungarian government has expelled the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Central Bank (ECB). Ejecting banking cartels is not exceptional but often leads to war. Some nations are too big for war to be an option. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) declared financial sovereignty. Iceland threw out the bankers and filed charges. The heads of Iceland’s banking system were declared fugitives and afterwards fled to Europe. The Hungarian leader charges that previous Socialist administrations sold the nation into unending debt slavery under the terms of the IMF. Hungary’s popular Prime Minister Viktor Orban says Hungary neither wants nor needs further ‘assistance‘ from the cartels. He says, “no longer will Hungarians be forced to pay usurious interest to private, unaccountable central bankers. Instead, the Hungarian government has assumed sovereignty over its own currency. It now issues money debt free, as it is needed.” The results have been nothing short of extraordinary. The Hungarian economy, until recently staggering under bankers interest rates, has recovered rapidly. The Hungarian Economic Ministry recently announced that thanks to a ‘disciplined budget policy’ it has repaid the remaining €2.2B owed to the IMF, well before the due date. Unemployment is rapidly decreasing and now stands a tad over 10 per cent. If Spain followed Hungary and Iceland’s example by could Spain take a shortcut to a buoyant recovery and full employment?

TAFFETA GOES TO THE RACES

cantabile Cantabile female voice choir is a friendly and sociable group of ladies who take their music seriously. They rehearse every Friday from 3 to 5pm at La Siesta Church with Musical Director, Jennifer Morton and rehearsal accompanist and vocal coach, Patricia Flint. These words from Cantabile’s theme song sum up what they are about: Music unites us, pleases one and all, ¡Viva la música! Hear us singing, our voices ringing, Songs soft and sweet, Cantabile! Although Cantabile’s members are mostly English (with one Dane, one Swede & one Belgian thrown in for good measure), they sing in many languages including of course

Kenz Bar in San Luis welcomed a real live horse to their infamous Race Night last Wednesday evening. Ken and Jan Keely have been such massive supporters of The Easy Horse Care Centre in Rojales that Sue and Rod Weeding, co founders of the foundation decided it was time for Taffeta, one of their miniature horses to make an appearance. Despite the approaching storm she was there wearing her new coat which is made from the same material that was used for the lining of the British Olympic equestrian team jackets, Taffeta was her usual glamorous self and is relishing more her many public appearances. These popular events provide much needed funds for the EHCRC charity and give people the chance to experience a night at the races whilst enjoying a drink at their local. This was the sixth Race Night that Ken and Jan have hosted this year and they have already booked two more in September and October. “We really enjoy hosting these nights as it is something different for our customers to enjoy and everyone can join in” said Ken. “Jan and myself feel it is important to help worthy causes such as The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre and to be able to do this and have a great night at the same time makes it all the more enjoyable”. Last year Kenz Bar raised 1,000 Euros for the centre and this year they are well on their way to doubling that. The funds are essential for the day to day running of the centre which

now has 57 equines in it’s care. David Feest from EHCRC said “Ken and Jan have become great personal friends over the years that I have lived in Spain. When I first approached them about hosting these nights for our charity they could not have been more eager and helpful. These race nights are a great chance for us to get our message across to the public about what we do and raise awareness and funds for our work”. If you run a bar or know somebody that wants to host one of these events you can contact David on 639 781 528 or email him at admin@easyhorsecare.net The last word must go to Ken. “It was great to meet Taffeta however the tips she gave me were useless. “So much for straight from the horses mouth”. If you would like to visit Taffeta and our other 56 horses, ponies and donkeys and hear their stories the Rescue Centre is to the public open every Sunday from 1 pm. Tasty hot food, cakes and hot and cold drinks are all available. For more information or directions visit www. easyhorsecare.net or call 652 021 980 . You can also support us by visiting one of our charity shops in Guardamar, Quesada, Los Montesinos, La Zenia and La Siesta We also have our English tack shop at the Rescue Centre open 7 days from 10 am

Spanish, and Latin. Their repertoire varies from religious and classical to traditional, folk and popular songs and Jennifer produces training CDs to help the ladies learn the music. They perform at least two major concerts each year, usually November/December and April/May. Rehearsals for this term begin on September 6th at 3.30pm at La Siesta Church when we shall begin our programme of Christmas music for the 2013 Festive Season. Next May, Cantabile will perform a programme including Tales from the Vienna Woods by Strauss. Cantabile’s concerts have raised modest but important sums for local charities. In the last six years, for example, they have made donations to: The Alzheimer’s Association, the Stroke Awareness Association, Age Concern, DEBRA, Campoverde Church, SS Peter & Paul Church, Torrevieja, and La Siesta Church. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact Jennifer on 966796866 or email her: jen-morton@ hotmail.co.uk, or just come along to a rehearsal. Chillies: Britain’s harvest raises fans’ temperatures

Britain’s chillies are almost ready for harvest,

and the fiery foods have never been more in demand. Once the preserve of hotter climes, a dazzling array of chillies are now grown in Britain: from the mild Hungarian hot wax, to Mexican poblano and the super-hot Dorset

naga, dubbed “Britain’s hottest”.

With such choice available, producers are calling for cooks to start embracing the variety of flavours they have, not just the “heat factor”. “Twenty years ago when we started it was a crazy thing to do,” says chilli farmer Joy Michaud, describing setting up her business

with her husband Michael in 1994. “People didn’t eat chillies. People didn’t know what to do with them. It was a very exotic thing.” Now the Michauds breed chillies and sell seeds and plants online via their company Sea Spring Seeds based in Dorchester, Dorset, and have seen a big increase in interest over the years. “In the last 20 years British diets have changed,” says Ms Michaud. “And now it’s still a new crop, there’s still a lot to learn, but there are a lot more growers around.” Originating in South and Central America,

chillies were introduced to South Asia in the 1500s. Today India and China are two of the largest chilli producers in the world. In Britain, the chilli industry is small-scale but has expanded significantly, thanks to new-found tastes. “In the old days people used to ask for green and red chillies and that was it. But now they actually are asking for varieties of chillies. “They’re asking for nagas; for Scotch bonnets, for jalapenos and are asking for them by name,” says Joanna Plumb, who grows chillies and makes sauces at her business Edible Ornaments in Chawston, Bedfordshire.

Sep 24: Fiesta De La Mercé, Barcelona: This celebration honors Our Lady of Mercy (La Mercè), the city’s patron saint. Free music concerts, from traditional to contemporary, are held in the plazas (particularly Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça Sant Jaume), and figures from folklore such as the gigants (giants) and cap grosses (fatheads) take to the streets. People come out to perform the sardana (the traditional Catalan dance) and to watch the nail-biting castellers (human towers). Firework displays light up the night, and the hair-raising correfoc, a parade of firework-brandishing “devils” and dragons, is the grand finale.

Campaign launched to encourage more expats to vote

Fewer than 20,000 expats are registered to vote in the UK, even though a large number are entitled to do so. Under the current regulations, Brits are able to vote in domestic elections provided they have lived in the UK sometime in the last 15 years. This year, though, will see the launch of a major campaign to encourage more Brits to participate in the democratic process at home, regardless of how it influences their day-to-day lives. It is hoped that the campaign will lead to an increase in the number of registered expat voters in time for the next general election in 2015. What’s more, it has been suggested that people living overseas could also qualify for a referendum on Britain’s future (or lack of) with the EU. To this end, the Electoral Commission is currently drawing up plans to focus on those people who continue to use email accounts that were first created while in the UK. Spain and Australia, each of which is home to around one million British expats, are being targeted by the campaign, as is France, which houses around 500,000 British nationals. Other countries that are being targeted by the campaign include the US, New Zealand and South Africa. Speaking about the current predicament, Conservative MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said: “It is pretty poor that these people are disenfranchised. “If three million people were disenfranchised for a particular reason in this country, there would be an awful row about it.” Prior to the election in 2010, a similar campaign was launched and eventually led to the downloading of an additional 40,000 overseas registration forms. It has been suggested, however, that the issue of overseas voters has taken a political turn, with some so-called experts suggesting that it favours a particular party.

If you would be interested in joining and having a list of possible concerts etc. please contact me, Annie Busch at culturevultures. mazarron@gmail.com or by phone 968 599 031

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

Marlon

The day was too meltingly hot for anything, even coherent thought, as we wandered through the Rastrillo when my eye was captured by a line of lacy bras, and my body’s automatic pilot steered me over to them. There are some things that a girl can’t have too many of – shoes, handbags, chocolate –or in my case, bras. Apparently I am not a commonly encountered size, according to the manufacturers of bosom support, so any display of bras will have me rooting around in it like a pig after truffles in the often vain hope of finding my size. To my amazement I found that which I sought, but bras, no matter how lacy, are only as good as their fit; I would have to try before I would buy, so off to the toilet I set with my putative purchase discretely secreted in a plain bag. I locked the door, removed my top and unclipped my current bra. Normally, when released from the tension of the clip, it will abandon my body with gratitude, but today it clung, heat welded to my breasts in an embrace more fervent than Juliet ever received from Romeo. I peeled it off, wondering that if it is that difficult to get a bra off my sweaty body, josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk how am I ever

By Jos Biggs

going to get one on? Nevertheless it had to be done. I placed the new bra back to front and clipped it up, noting that it already seemed eager to form an unbreakable reverse positioned bond with my flesh. Now it was down to tact and stealth. I ran my finger around its band, surreptitiously easing it round millimetre by millimetre until it was placed appropriately for cargo loading. I eased the load on board, and hoisted the support straps, watching for spillage as I did so. However, there was none! Everything corresponded harmoniously in size and contour - it was a perfect fit! Quickly, before it could mould itself permanently (or at least until winter sets in) to my flesh, I unclipped it, returned it to the bag, and picked up the original bra. For a second I baulked, unwilling to go through the rigmarole of yet again donning a close fitting but uncooperative garment. I looked at my unfettered reflection in the mirror. No, I thought. You can’t do that, there are innocent families out there, they don’t deserve such punishment! I struggled into my old bra, and emerged from the toilet with all safely gathered in. I am very pleased with my new bra, but one thing worries me – its label gives its brand name as Marlon, which is a male name. Was it perhaps designed to be worn by ladies of a different gender?

Old Regrets, New Beginnings At times in my life I have come across characters who had left the life they had known and simply upped-sticks and legged it to pastures new. I’m not talking about the drop-outs or the no hopers who simply decide to dedicate their feeble energies to not finding work; living off the rest of us and squatting in someone else’s property. No, I’m referring to those brave individuals who for whatever reasons, have made the decision to give up good jobs and comfortable life-styles in many cases, and attempt to rediscover themselves in a new environment. The people that most of us envy when we meet them and hear their stories, although we know that as desirable as their tales sound, we would never have the courage to do it ourselves. I’ve not come across any here in the Costa’s – places like this I imagine, are the very ones that these singular people usually want to escape from, and are the antithesis of the laid-back life styles in quieter, out of the way locations. Many years ago, I met Eric in the tiny fishing village of Polperro in Cornwall, where I was living. Probably in his late forties, he suddenly appeared behind the bar

of our favourite harbour side pub at the start of the summer, and although nobody seemed to know much about him, he soon became a popular fixture and a very good barman to boot. The population in holiday venues like Polperro increases dramatically during the summer with tourists, but also with seasonal workers taken on as temporary staff in the numerous restaurants and shops. After a particularly hectic session one night with yours truly somewhat the worse for wear on Newcastle Brown, Eric offered me a floor to crash out on for the night in the tiny one bedroom harbourside cottage he had rented. I only lived half a mile away as the seagull flies, but it was all up-hill, and if anyone is familiar with the village, they will know that Talland Hill is tricky enough to negotiate whilst sober even with emergency oxygen strapped to your back, let alone when you are three sheets to the wind. But it was over our breakfast of boiled eggs and soldiers the next morning, sitting in his cosy living room watching the sun glinting tantalisingly off the placid harbour

waters, that he told me about himself. He had had a lucrative job back in Kent – he was reluctant to give me a precise location, for reasons that became obvious – and was a married man of some twenty years standing. There were no children, which had become a festering bone of contention between him and his wife, and the marriage which had been travelling down a one-way street for some time, now found itself up to its axles in mud and permanently bogged down. He and his wife had even ceased to become friends, he told me – it was a hopeless situation. Moreover, he loathed his well paid job, and it didn’t help matters that instead of a warm welcome on arriving home from work each day, he was greeted either with silence or bile from his increasing nag of a wife. He made a joke of it by describing his dinner each evening as consisting of either cold shoulder or tongue salad. According to him, he woke up one day and decided that everything would change; gave his notice at work that very morning and told his wife later the same day that he would be leaving home for some

undisclosed destination because, as he said, they both needed a complete fresh start. He had one month remaining at work and in that time he signed the house over to his wife along with the car – both paid for and with no strings attached – and made adequate financial arrangements for her. He would be in touch in due course regarding a divorce he informed her, and that was that. The day after he finished his employment, laden only with two canvas grips, he was on the train to Cornwall and a new life. I asked him how he felt, having had a few months with his new and unfamiliar life style. Were there any regrets? Absolutely not he informed me. He had never been happier or more contented. Later, I met many such types who crewed the boats that arrived in Bermuda during the biennial Newport-Bermuda race, mostly youngsters, but occasionally men and women who had opted out and had been crewing around the world for years as their preferred life style. Like Eric, they all seemed very happy with their lot and were having the times of their lives. Discarding material possessions and thumbing your nose at convention. It’s an attractive concept.

alqueria - To Manuela a daughter? John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Alqueria was calm, peaceful and serene. It was very worrying. This high power inertia usually meant a period of suppuration. Time to renew the rivalry between the barrios, to allow mutual disdain to fester and grow. The Village held its collective breath waiting for the inevitable resumption of hostilities. Manuela’s absence from the village had left the Hill People leaderless requiring them to keep a low profile. They spent their time planning and plotting ready for her reappearance. When she did return from vacation she caused quite a stir, for she had with her a little seven year old raven haired girl. The Pueblo’s very efficient rumour generation and broadcast network soon had her down as Manuela’s erstwhile fostered daughter. Men throughout the Village checked old diaries and a dozen or so started packing ready to make themselves scarce. They began unpacking again when the little girl was registered under the name of Izar Expósita at the local school. Whether the child was a foundling or whether Manuela was simply muddying the water is still hotly debated but at least the male population was ‘off the hook’. The Village Elders, in search of evidence to validate their gossip began comparing the physical attributes of the two. The raven hair, olive skin and those deep brown eyes which can dissolve a man’s heart at two-hundred paces were wonderfully common in this part of the Iberian Peninsular. A close examination of the eyes however may have given a clue. Izar’s carried a fire reminiscent of Manuela’s, gateways to smouldering souls? The Elders then looked for similarities in behaviour and Izar didn’t disappoint. On her first day at school a badly advised boy of nine decided to challenge Izar’s authority in the playground. Izar reduced him to a quivering heap in no time at all. The simple promise of setting fire to his house and burning it and all in it to the ground did the trick. Her teacher wasn’t impressed however and demanded she made an apology. The venom with which she issued her threat was in stark contrast to the engineered angelic pose adopted for the issuing of the apology. On hearing of the fracas the Elders nodded wisely and set about perpetuating their gossip with a new found zeal. Whether little Izar will impact on Alquerian politics as much as Manuela has, only time will tell. The Newcomers however may have had a glimpse of what is in store.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

The number of emails that I have received this week having a similar theme of people in trouble with refilling ink cartridges, just to find out that these lovely people are having a joke. Each and everyone of these emails help to brighten up a wet and dismal week – thank you all :-) Windows 8 gains ground among the OS ranks! For everyone out there who thinks that this is a misprint, let me assure you it isn’t. But don’t worry! This Operating System (OS) with it’s 7% market share still drags, sadly, behind Windows 7 (45%) and the ancient Windows XP (33%). Windows Vista (which should have never been released) still hangs in there with (4%). The remaining 10% (ish) are OS’s that haven’t had the Microsoft Marketing Machine coercing computer manufacturer’s into using MS products. Steve Jobs (Apple) never had the ruthless manipulation skills of his ex-partner Bill Gates, preferring for his product to speak for itself. This it does in spades! Please remember that each successive incarnation of windows is pushed by the Microsoft Marketing Machine and, as the marketing succeeds, the previous versions lose their footing and fall down the rankings. Although, in the case of the most popular Windows XP, it does seem to be holding on, albeit with grim tenacity! Windows 8 was received by you, the everyday user, with as much welcome as a fox in the hen house. It was designed as a kludge (a quick-and-dirty solution) for both PCs and touch-screen devices, Windows 8 has proven to be less than popular with us, the users, with its Modern desktop approach. Whereas some love it, others hate it. Either way, the latest upgrade Windows 8.1, is Microsoft’s first attempt to make the OS more palatable than its predecessor. Disappointingly, Microsoft haven’t done the massive U-turn to changed the way you see your desktop back to the way it was! What they have done, is to add the much loved ‘START’ button, which then will allow you to use the ‘normal’ Windows menu system that we have grown accustomed to and added a menu option that allow you to always start on your desktop, just like most of us do now! It does have a variety of new apps (there’s that ridiculous abbreviation again!). The first is called ‘Xbox Music’ and is a replacement for ‘Spotify’ and other online music stations. The camera program has been upgraded to something more like a ‘Snap and Modify’ suite of utilities. This will allow you to take snapshots and then start to tweak them. Probably the best addition is something that other Operating Systems have used for a decade and more. The ‘Auto-Update’ of programs that you have installed onto your computer. For Example, You use a free office suite and it has just had an upgrade on the web. Normally, your program will say “Oy Fat Boy, I’ve a new version out there!”. Now, Windows 8 will do that for you will all your software whether it has the option built in or not. As I pointed out earlier, Linux has done this for 10 years and more. Having seen, and played with, the beta test version, the changes are so minor that I wouldn’t spend a bent cent on the upgrade. In fact, I would stick with Windows 7 (if you must have windows anything)! This release will be out in October 18th (supposedly!). For unbiased opinions come to the computer club at ‘Jacks Bar’! Starts at 10(ish) until 11:30(ish) and if you have computer related problems, I will be at ‘Jacks Bar’ from 12 til 4 offering a free computer diagnostic clinic. Bring your problem computers to me for a free examination. After the 5 or so minutes it takes to diagnose the problem you can, take the solution away and fix it yourself for free or I can do it but not for free :-) Have a great week For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk guernica by pablo picasso

REVIEW it...

Guernica by Dave Boling The painting which I am currently working on will be called Guernica. By means of it, I express my abhorrence of the race that has sunk Spain in an ocean of pain and death. Pablo Picasso Like the great artist, Boling painted his sprawling mural as a fictional piece, emphasising how closely-knit and struggling Basque families were irrevocably disfigured but not completely destroyed by the Spanish civil war. The story inevitably shows un-necessary human suffering and loss coupled with acts of heroism and amazing fortitude of the nobler characters who miraculously survive the atrocities during the destruction of Guernica in 1937. Even before 1937 Picasso wanted to shatter art and reshape it. Sadly, the opportunity came and in his rage he created his famous painting. He appears in the story and expresses his anger verbally to German soldiers as well as through his paintings. Boling’s characters are inspirational, solid, good and noble. Not perfect by any means but strong enough to survive the traumas of losing their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. They strive towards self-sufficiency and are family-oriented. They loved life and dancing seemed to be an important part of their lives until it was banned by Franco. The women were sensual and their dance movements were erotic: Miren and Mariangeles began spinning in mirrored orbits, doing triple kicks and turns, side kicks and turns, arms upraised and fingers snapping. With each spin, their skirts rose outward only to gather tightly when they stopped and reversed, creating swirling eddies of red satin. Angeles Ansotegui dies shortly after giving birth to her third son, Xabier. Her husband, Pascual is so devastated by her death that he loses the will to live and eventually disappears into oblivion. His eldest son, Justo, at 15, takes on a paternal role and takes charge of the farm in Errotabarri, Guernica. The boys grow up as orphans and surprisingly, thrive. Justo meets Mariangeles Onati and the chemistry is strong in spite of his arrogant and self-inflated ego. His brother, Josepe, became a successful fisherman and Xabier was encouraged to join the seminary where he played a significant role in the church and in politics. Imperfectly matched, Justo and Mariangeles were enamoured with each other and the birth of Miren complemented their happy union. Our second major family is the Navarros, typical fishermen. Eduardo (Dodo) is high spirited, outspoken and vents his anger against the Guardia Civil who are pro-Franco supporters. His brother Miguel is drawn into a skirmish when Dodo is accused of being subversive and is physically threatened. He defends Dodo and both boys go into hiding fearing arrest. Ironically, it is Xmas time, a time of peace. Even nature sympathises as the wind blew icy needles accompanied by the arthritic groaning of the frozen pipes. Dodo is taken to St Jean-de-Luz where he heroically risks his life in smuggling people into Spain then onto Portugal or Gibraltar. Miguel is sent to Guernica where he learns the art of carpentry and romantically falls head over heels with Miren, Justo’s daughter. Justo is interestingly described as

enough for trading boats to navigate the estuary to the Bay of Biscay. Across medieval Europe meetings were held and new laws signed under oak trees. In Gernika there’s been an

a cross between a Catalonian bull and a cave bear. Typically Basque. He is overbearing and his overprotective nature towards Miren makes it virtually impossible for courting. However Miguel is not put off and confronts Justo about his father’s undying love for his wife as well as the story about castrating the sheep. Surprisingly, Justo gives his approval to a marriage and the men forge a strong relationship. Migue, another heroic Basque, introduced an element of eroticism into his work because of his love for Miren. He created finer products, with greater detail and polish with lines that were subtly sensuous. Miguel and Miren were tender lovers, fully transparent: He was power, she was grace. He solid, she liquid and once their marriage had been consummated: They were both liquid. Fulfillment arrived with the birth of Catalina. Domestic bliss is short-lived and from time to time Boling drops strong hints of revolts and arrests as the civil war rages and moves dangerously close to Bilbao then Guernica. Xabier counsels Jose Antonio Aguirre who became the first Basque president and we learn a lot about the bloodthirsty rebels, hungry for Basque blood, the tortures and executions through his confessions. Lieutenant Colonel Wolfram von Richthofen was one of the many Germans supporting Franco although he disliked the Spanish. To him they were a nation of bumbling procrastinators. He lost no sleep over masterminding the complete annihilation of Guernica. Arrogant. Wicked. Without a conscience. After so much death and destruction he looked back at his handiwork with admiration and wrote: Simply terrific. Social conditions were appalling. Rationing. Hunger, stealing. Suspicion of informers. Arrests. People disappearing. Out of the depths of despair comes hope. Ordinary people with extraordinary powers of resilience and strength mentally as well as physically. It is likely Boling wanted us to admire these people and learn something from their ability to keep going. On a bench of land to the west, the symbolic oak of Guernica stands rigid and undisturbed. Somehow the rebels and Germans didn’t damage the tree, though little else escaped their influences. Symbolic of liberation and democracy. Unmoved. It seems that somethings are indestructible including man’s spirit and determination for freedom. Publisher: Picador. ISBN: 978-0330-460668

oak on the same spot since the town was founded in 1366. The first lasted 450 years being replaced in 1742. The third tree was planted in 1858 but this was replaced

in 2005 after it died from a fungus. The town gardeners have always grown oaks from the acorns and there is a stock of descendants which are given as gifts to towns and organisations friendly with the Basque region. Gernika is the traditional seat of the Biscay Province Parliament; Basque laws were passed under these oaks up until 1876 with a meeting house built nearby for this purpose. When the Basque region became part of Castille it became customary for new kings to come to Guernica to swear an oath under the tree to uphold the laws of Biscay. The symbol of the oak leaf features on many Basque logos and coats of arms. So Gernika has always held special significance for the Basque people and it’s regarded as their spiritual heart. During the Civil War most Basque regions voted to side with the ruling republicans which pitted them against the nationalists led by Franco. Northern Spain was hugely important for both sides as it has coal, iron and the subsequent heavy industry

in abundance. The nationalists were aiming to take Bilbao and on March 31st leaflets were dropped from planes across the region bearing a message from General Mola telling people their lives and possessions would be spared if they surrendered. The same day the town of Durango became the first ever defenceless civilian European town to be bombed from the air. Hundreds died and fighter planes straffed people in the streets as they ran. General Queipo Del Llano claimed over the radio that only military targets has been hit and that the priests and nuns that died had been locked by communists in the churches and burnt alive. Monday is market day in Gernika and was and still is a huge affair taking on a holiday feel. On April 2nd 1936 the town held 10,000 people; locals, market goers and also refugees fleeing the first bombings from a few weeks earlier. At 1630 hours all hell broke loss and for 2 and ¾ hours the German Luftwaffe (Condor Legion) and the Italian air force carpet bombed

the defenceless town. Wave upon wave of explosives and incendiaries rained down, with fighter planes shooting people as they ran in fear. The town was all but destroyed. The supposed military objective was to destroy the river bridge which remained untouched as were the two munitions factories. Journalists arrived quickly to the scene and reported the bombing but the Francoists denied any bombing had taken place instead blaming the republicans for setting fire to the town as they retreated. It’s estimated around 1500 people lost their lives. A few days later the town was taken unopposed. The oak tree and meeting house were luckily untouched by the bombs and locals held an armed guard around the tree to stop the victors felling it as a symbolic act against the Basques. At the Nuremberg trials Goering confessed that Guernica was used as a testing ground for the ‘total war’ bombing techniques for the war to come!

FC TORREVIEJA

TORRY GAIN A HARD EARNED POINT AND REMAIN UNBEATEN Last Sunday Torry travelled 100 miles north to Llosa de la Ranes to play Llosa in a highnoon shoot-out. The previous weekend Llosa had pulled off a shock 2-1 win at much fancied Castellon. Torry had no suspensions or injuries and except for defender Alexis, who is still waiting for the paperwork to come from Mexico, by carrier pigeon ? ,so that he can be registered, Torry had a full squad to choose from. Torry manager Anselmo made changes to the starting line-up. Vicente returned to the side at right-back after sitting out the first game of the season through a suspension carried over from last season. Obele made his first start of the season up front as the lone striker in preference to Eric. The manager took a cautious approach electing to play 2 defensive midfielders, Valdeolivas and Burguillos, in front of the back-four. FC Torrevieja: Carrión, Vicente, Dani Meseguer, Eloy,

Rafa, Valdeolivas, Burguillos, Carrasco (Gash 78 ‘), Obele, Alberto and Micro (Pastor 70’). Subs not used: Carlos, Eric and Dani Lucas In the mid-day heat the game kicked off in front of a crowd of around 250. After a tentative start by both sides Llosa took the initiative and after 13 minutes Campos seized on a ball over the top and beat Carrion for a GOALLLLL to Llosa 1-0. This spurred Torry into action and they went in search of an equaliser. On 16 minutes Carrasco had an effort from close range turned round the post for a corner by the Llosa keeper. Alberto took the corner which was delivered to the back post and met by the unmarked Valdeolivas who headed the ball into the back of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry 1-1. Torry then had opportunities to take the lead through Micro, Obele and Carrasco but didn’t take advantage of these. Just before halftime Llosa had a couple of reasonable chances but the

finishes didn’t trouble Torry keeper Carrion. Llosa started the second-half the stronger and took the lead again on 48 minutes through a scrambled GOALLLLL 2-1 after a throwin into the Torry box wasn’t dealt with. On 53 minutes a punt up field by Carrion wasn’t dealt with by the Llosa central defenders and the loose ball fell to Carrasco who found the back of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry 2-2. Both sides had chances to win the game but didn’t capitalise on them with Torry finishing the stronger. A well earned point for Torry after coming from behind twice. Valeolivas and Obele picked up bookings for Torry. That is two draws for Torry in the opening couple of games which leaves Torry in 14th place in the table. Torry have a friendly on Saturday 7 September, kick-off 7.00 pm against local La Liga side Elche CF who have no game over the weekend because of the “international” break for the World Cup qualifiers. Torry have a home league game scheduled for the following day against Torre Levante kick-off 6.30 pm which the club are trying to re-schedule. At the time of writing this report, Monday, the league match had not yet been re-scheduled. Let’s hope it is. The league is the most important and 2 games in 24 hours is certainly not ideal although the football club really do need the revenue the friendly match may potentially generate. To catch up on up to date information about Torry visit the clubs website www. futbolclubtorrevieja.net or the new Torry Army website www.fctorrevieja.net . The par 3’s appeared to test most golfers with only 3 of the 4 NTP prizes claimed one to a young guest player Sam Bird whom didn’t respond with a score likening his name and proceeded to 3 put !!!!!! and the other two par 3’s taken by Nikki Ead, well done both.

SPORTSMAN GOLF SOCIETY QUESADA: Bonalba Golf & Spa Wednesday 28th August 2013 All players met at the Clubhouse and where undecided on what we should do..... Long journey to Bonalba to find out we would be rained off or call it a day ? After some deliberation we decided to hit the road and take a chance. What a good decision it turned out to be. 18 players in total took to the fairways of Bonalba and believe it or not blessed with dry weather. Whatever

TORREGOLF.EU at Font del Llop What a great day, perfect conditions after the severe storms of Thursday for a full house of Club members playing their normal Stableford Competition. One would have thought that after raining so hard there would be puddles everywhere but no evidence to show anywhere for our 10am start, well done the staff of Font del Llop for providing us with such a great course in great condition. Scoring on the day was low to average with only 8 members beating that 30 point score. Event of the day was Paul (The Hulk) Hurrell now adding another name to himself and after an Eagle on the 18th is now Paul (Eddie the Hulk Eagle). Well done Paul. Results were Category 1. 1st. Tony Mackman 38 points 2nd. Eddie the Eagle 33points 3rd. Peter Kerr 32 and 4th.

FAIRWAYZ GS

If I was a duck I would be quacking my head off today, paddling in the mud and holding my head up to feel the rain on my beak!! But I’m not, I am an average handicap golfer who prefers to play golf in my shorts and polo shirt, with the sun on my back. Unfortunately today, the one day of the week I play golf, the heavens opened and we got a good soaking. Well only on the last 4 holes really, and I know we need some rain, but why on a Thursday for heavens sake! There’s 6 other whole days in the week that it can rain! I’m not whingeing, I just couldn’t think of anything else to write about really. A good number of members

ITV ORIHUELA

ITV ORIHUELA RFC START TRAINING FOR NEW SEASON This week starting on Tuesday 3 September, Orihuela RFC are back in training for the new season after the summer break. So looking forward to seeing all the players from last season and plenty of new ones, after some brilliant results from then, so that we continue in great strides forward for the club in 2013/2014 season in the Murcia league. The club is also looking at getting a second team up and running so that everyone gets a game this year, so the more new players the better, no matter what age or experience you have, just come along and join in the fun. After a long break with most of the other teams in the league continuing through the summer with beach training and plenty of 7’s tournaments, so we are playing catch up. Also this week starts the rugby season in the UK with live rugby

Thader

Thader started the new season today with an away match at Callosa, one of the most attractive grounds in the league, nestled below the bulk of the Sierra Callosa and with palm trees down one side of the stadium. Their support is always good which makes for a lively atmosphere. Thader had the first goal chance when they won a corner after ten minutes, the ball falling to Pomares whose header went just over the bar. Five

Orihuela Costa With the new season on the horizon Orihuela Costa Cadetes F.C. who play their football in the Valencian Federation League have joined forces with Club De Futbol Racing Playas De Orihuela. This new venture will secure football for the local youth of the Orihuela Costa and surrounding area. With investment from local businesses being given to the club it will allow the club to compete with all the other club’s who play in the same league as Orihuela Costa team financially as well as competitively on the field. This has always been a massive problem for the past three years due to high pitch fee’s being charged to Orihuela Costa Cadetes and without sponsorship from very supportive local businesses in the past the club would have

Callosa were now trying to press Thader but our defence was standing firm and after thirty minutes Thader were coming back into the game. Five minutes before the interval Thader broke down the right and a good cross found Nino who fired the ball into the net to put us one up and so the score remained at the interval.

The second half was a scrappy affair with Callosa becoming increasingly rattled but Thader more than holding their own. With ten minutes to go the home team won a dubious penalty after an alleged handball. Callosa netted to equal the score. More drama five minutes later when our keeper, Jovi, brought down a home player in the box for another penalty and Jovi was sent for an early bath. Substitute keeper, Parra, came on to try to save the spot kick and managed to get a hand to the ball but couldn´t keep it out.

Callosa were now in front and there seemed no way back for Thader. In the dying moments Thader won a free kick just outside Callosa´s area. ¨Cometh the hour, cometh the man¨ Up stepped Lloyd to fire the ball through the home defence to equal the score. Final score : - Callosa 2 - Thader 2. Next Sunday we are at home to Hercules `B´. Contact Peter on 693 768 593 for more info.

folded a long time ago leaving local youths without a team to play for unlike every other local town & village who provide football for their local children due to their local town hall funding activities. Unfortunately Orihuela Costa town hall has never been interested in this despite the fact a huge percentage of revenue collected for Orihuela Town comes from the Costa area. For Orihuela Costa Football Club it makes it even more frustrating to see all their competitors who come under the umbrella of Orihuela Town not only providing these teams with fantastic facilities and materials but also to see these teams turn up in plush new coaches to games and all for a third of the price of what our local children have had to pay.

The new club Racing Playa de Orihuela will continue to use the C.D.M. pitch with their great facilities as their home ground for games and training. The club covers all age groups from Pre Benjamin 5-6-7 years / Benjamin 8 - 9 years / Alevin 10 -11 years / Infantil 12 -13 years / Cadete 14 -15 years / Juvenil 16 - 17 -18 years / Adult mens team. Mini football is also in the pipeline for children of 3 to 5 years old. This has been the dream of local businessman Alfredo Miranda who has worked tirelessly to set this venture up and along with Antonio Garcia of C.D.M. sports center has now managed to get the club registered and now up and running. All the football coaches are

fully qualified and legally contracted to the sports center so to ensure all players receive quality coaching and peace of mind for parents of younger players. Training will be 90 minute sessions two evenings a week with a league game on weekends. The club will issue full training kits to all players who register so if you feel your child would benefit from the fantastic facilities and also the reassurance of qualified coaches then come and try Club De Futbol Racing Playas de Orihuela the only football club representing the Orihuela Costa area for local children and families. For further information on training times please call :965 503 915 or e-mail: recepcion@ cdmorihuelacosta.com

Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. If you would like more information about what is going on in the club, you can contact the club by phoning myself, Garry on 692 767 242, and for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish)

Lo Marabu Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Villamartin 29th August 2013. For this month’s society meeting a group of 34 players visited the established course at Villamartin taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The previous evening we had a terrible thunderstorm bringing back memories of our only cancelled fixture in 7 years on the same course in February this year. The weather was pleasant with slightly lower temperatures than normal although there was a hint on thunder at one point on the back nine. The course was in reasonably good condition but a few of the tee box positions had seen better days and should have been moved by the greens staff. The winning scores were as follows: 1st Dave Mason – 36 points

at Hacienda Requilme Wednesday 28th August 26 members and guests traveled to Hacienda Requilme wondering if we would be playing golf , as the skies darkened and one or two rain spots dared to come down, however the wind kept the rain at bay and we made it round the 18 holes without getting the wet suits out, the only drawback was that the greens had been hollow tined the week before and the greens are taking a bit longer to recover due to the heat, we were also amazed to find that we could not get a drink before teeing off as the one and only bar/restaurant did not open until 10.00am and as we were teeing off at this time we were quite disappointed, Hacienda is a difficult course and the scores were quite low for most of us but as you will see some did find the right way to play it, and well done to them.
