accident leaves two dead

Two young men died in an accident involving a cherry picker in which they were working. The accident took place at 4.30 in the afternoon in the Calle Francisco Jimeno Sola on the Polígono Industrial de Saprelorca. The two men, one of whom was from Puerto Lumbrera and aged 33, and the other a Romanian, aged 30, were in the basket of the cherry picker working outside an animal feed factory when the basket upturned and pitched them into an underground storage void from a height of about 20 metres. Around 20 other workers who were working at the site on the inside of the unit tried to offer assistance. The 112 emergency services were called to attend to two people, who at that time were thought to be unconscious. Firefighters from the Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento (Ceis) based in Lorca, medical staff from the Gerencia de Emergencias Sanitarias del Servicio Murciano de Salud and an ambulance from the Servicio de Urgencias attended the scene, but the two men were pronounced dead. A third man, who had been working on maintenance alongside the two deceased, had to be revived with oxygen after suffering from shock. The gates of the factory were cordoned off by the Guardia Civil, and vehicles were unable to enter or leave the premises. Celebrations due to be held by the Diputación de Henares were suspended because the father of one of the deceased was a member of the festival committee.

The Guardia Civil de la Región de Murcia has dismantled a greenhouse at a country property in Abarán, which was being used to grow marijuana. Two people were arrested, and more than 400 plants of various sizes, some of them ready for distribution and sale, as well as computer equipment, a van and a motorcycle, were seized. The officers were tipped off that a building in Albarán was being used in relation to drug trafficking. Their inquiries led the officers to a farm on the outskirts of the town, where the marijuana was thought to be grown. After fully identifying the occupants of the house, and obtaining all necessary evidence, the officers conducted a search, which resulted in the dismantling of a greenhouse, and the seizure of 405 plants together with various items needed for their cultivation. This action has broken up the chain of supply to the town of Espinardo (Murcia) where the drug was sold. Those arrested were MAMT, Spanish, 29 years of age and CMV, Spanish, also 20 years old. Both men are residents of Abarán.

During 2012 the Dirección General de Industria, Energía y Minas has conducted analysis tests on a total of 27,250 pieces of gold and silver, representing more than 200 kilograms of both metals, which were either imported or manufactured in the region. The analyses were conducted to ensure that these items of precious metals were of an optimal quality for sale in the Murcian region as well as in the rest of Spain and Portugal. The tests, which are carried out in a laboratory, employ a method called ‘cupellation’. This procedure determines the proportion of pure gold after the removal of copper and silver particles. Once testing is completed, the piece is marked with a stamp that guarantees its quality. Throughout the past year the Consejería has verified the purity of 1,250 gold pieces. Silver goods imported into the region go through a similar process to establish quality and purity. Each object is analysed by a technique called ‘potentiometric’ that checks the silver content of each piece. During the last year 26,000 pieces of jewellery have been authenticated. This analysis is a mandatory procedure for all imports of gold and silver; one which guarantees the quality, purity and authenticity of jewellery purchased. The regional laboratory has been recognised as outstanding by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre in a survey of 22 laboratories around the world for the reliability of its analyses.

otters are found on the banks of the rio segura

The Asociación de Naturalistas del Sureste (ANSE), has confirmed that otters are to be found on banks of the Río Segura in the province of Alicante. In June their presence was confirmed by the finding of droppings close to the centre of the city of Murcia. In July the first images were caught on static cameras, and during the month of August the elusive mammal has colonised the entire bank of the Segura up to Orihuela; the first time that otters have been seen there since the first half of the twentieth century. ANSE, acting for the City of Murcia, had undertaken an ecological project for the upgrading of river banks. They have found numerous traces of otters from the Contraparada, between Javalí Nuevo and Javalí Viejo, 12 kilometres from the centre of the city, up to Orihuela. Otters are considered endangered in the region according to Law 7/95. ANSE considers that the otter recolonisation should be regarded as a triumph for the environmental recovery of river channels, and a prime example of the biological potential of Southeast Iberian rivers.

Spain cuts overseas foreign aid

Jesus Garcia, Spain’s secretary of state for International Cooperation commented yesterday how Spain is switching the focus on its foreign aid programs from funding various projects financially, to providing an exchange of knowledge. Tumbit.com reports that the Secretary, who is also responsible for Spain’s relationship with Latin America, admitted that the ‘revision’ was largely due to the country’s ongoing economic pressures, but that foreign aid must be subject to austerity, along with other areas of public

spending. “Spain has been very generous over the past 20 years across the entire region - we have contributed €9 billion in aid to Latin America, and the region that has benefited most is Central America,” he said during an official visit to Costa Rica. “Now and in the future we’re in an austerity process that forces us to find other kinds of foreign aid, perhaps with fewer economic resources but with the same enthusiasm,” he continued. Garcia went explain that Spain will speak with other Foreign Governments who

have previously received financial aid to see if they can be helped in more practical ways. “Spanish foreign aid will now be based more on the exchange of knowledge, know-how and experience than on providing funds,” he said. With so many people in Spain living below the poverty line and with public funding being cuts in so many essential services such as Healthcare and Education, the question must surely be why this has not been addressed before now. €9 billion finances a lot of Hospitals and Schools.

A FEVE train caught fire in the Estación de La Unión. The cause of the fire was at that time unknown, but was attended by firefighters from the Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento de la Región de Murcia del Parque de Los Alcázares. The fire, which started at 10:46 hours on a train operated by Renfe, was smothered within an hour, and affected one of the motors of the engine. A vehicle from the Primera Intervención de La Unión attended, but there were no injuries.

A 24 year old Murcian man’s plans to get himself out of a scrape have backfired on him. Cándido LM, who is known to the police, and whose driving license withdrawn by court order, reported the theft of his BMW 328. It took two cranes to remove it from the Rambla del Riacho de Alcantarilla, but the Policía Nacional de Alcantarilla felt that the circumstances of the alleged theft needed investigation. The vehicle was impounded, and experts from the Unidad de la Policía Científica examined it. Their conclusion was that no one but the owner had driven the car. According to police sources there were no tyre tracks and the vehicle was started without being hotwired, as would most likely have been the case in the robbery of a high-end car. The officers continued to examine the evidence, and noted that the alleged car theft was reported at the police station in El Carmen at three in the morning, and only four hours later, at 7.20, the vehicle was located in the Rambla del Riacho, an unusually short period of time after the initial missing report was filed. Acting on the suspicion that Cándido was driving at the time of the accident which caused the car to be in the Rambla, and that he had reported it as stolen to avoid the consequences of the offence of driving without a licence, the officers requested his presence at the Comisaría. However, he refused to testify, so he was arrested, and spent the night in police custody at the Comisaría de El Carmen. He appeared before the Juzgado de Instrucción número 9 de Murcia, and was released with charges, accused of the simulation of a robbery to pervert the course of justice. Should the Court determine that Cándido was driving, another offense for driving while disqualified would have been committed, and added to the charge sheet. If this is found to be the case the insurers could refuse the payment not only for repairs to the car but also for the services of the cranes, as the car was not stolen.

Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura fine ratified

The Sala de lo Contencioso del Tribunal Superior de Justicia (TSJ) - Litigation Division of the Superior Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) has ratified the fine of 2,000 euros imposed by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) on the company HP. SL for converting irrigated land around the Rambla de Villalba, in Mazarrón. This ratification signals that this was a violation of the Ley de Aguas. The Court, in dismissing the appeal, said that the facts in the record of infringement had been duly confirmed.

Spain seeks further Gibraltar talks with UK

Looking to defuse a diplomatic row that flared up last month over Gibraltar, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has written to his British counterpart, William Hague, proposing a new framework for discussing issues concerning the territory. According to a report by El Pais, Spain’s current government rejects the tripartite forum set up under Socialist PM José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, which gave equal status to Gibraltar, Spain and the UK. García-Margallo said Thursday that he had proposed to Hague a “method of working” that would set an “agenda and the composition of ad-hoc groups to resolve conflict.” Hague proposed something along those lines in April of last year, with all the relevant authorities concerned to be involved in resolving issues such as fishing rights and environmental protection measures.

The Consejería de Sanidad has stated that the waters of Las Menas are suitable for thermal and medicinal use. The Ayuntamiento de Alhama has received a report from the Consejería de Sanidad which declares that the water from the Pozo de Las Menas, which is Municipal property, is a medicinal mineral water and suitable for thermal use. The Alcalde, Alfonso Fernando Cerón, said that ‘all that remains is for the report to be endorsed by the Dirección General de Industria for thermal use.’ The Alhama thermal waters had suffered from infiltrations of impurities, forcing the Consistorio to conduct a new survey and analyses to check its suitability for therapeutic use. These new results have proved the waters to be suitable for use as spa water, and currently there are two companies interested in building a spa. Alcalde Cerón emphasised that ‘one of the priorities of this Government team was to reinstate the spa.’

Received a telephone call on Monday from Doctor Rob Vernon, geologist and one of the United Kingdom’s leading experts on mines and mining, asking if I was free on Tuesday, to re-visit the Santa Barbara Adit, in Almeria. “See you by the harbour at 10” I replied. “Make it 9.30, and we can grab a bacon butty” said the good doctor. Tuesday morning, after a sandwich and coffee, we took Rob’s battered 4 x 4 along the dry river bed, towards the distant Sierra Almagrera. After just over a couple of kilometres, we were forced to stop, mid. river, to allow some three hundred goats to cross from bank to bank. Driving on through the dust, the mine manager’s house, and gunpowder store, came into view, both now looking in a more ruinous state than I had remembered from my last visit, three years ago. With back packs, hard hats and lamps, we made our way up the hillside to the portal of the Santa Barbara Mine Tunnel. After the Romans pulled out, it wasn’t until the 1840’s, that interest was again shown in the minerals around and under the Sierra Almagrera, but with poor prices being offered for the lead & silver ore, interest soon waned. Dr.Rob., began taking detailed photographs of the brickwork that made up the portal of the tunnel, I gather for a future talk to mine engineers in the U.K.. The tunnel extends to 4 KM, wide enough to take a double track railway, although it would seem that the scrap merchants have removed the majority of the rails. There is a recent roof fall around the 2 KM mark, but the gloom continues on: a visit for another day. Old photographs and records show an aerial ropeway, once connected the mines with the coast. What a sight that would have been, when mining was at it’s peak. Alongside the portal, was the miners washhouse, which has now been converted into a private residence. Looking across the valley, can be seen the miners accommodation blocks. The size and number of blocks built, gives the visitor an idea, as to how seriously the mine owners, took the extraction of minerals from the Sierra Almagrera region. Telefónica-Movístar Bárcenas’ hard drive formatted by PP a week after he went to jail ditches mobile contract release penalties

Telecommunications giant Movístar plans to wipe out lock-in penalty clauses in its mobile phone contracts, leaving customers free to chop and change suppliers as they please. Press reports indicate that a recent drive towards eliminating fixed periods that force customers to pay a fee to release themselves from a given operator means companies are beginning to see they are a barrier to client loyalty. Jazztel is currently offering to pay up to 200 euros towards the lock-in penalty if customers break their contracts with other suppliers to move to them. Orange continues to keep customers on a longterm contract with a release penalty, but with a points system meaning new mobile handsets or other related equipment can be purchased with a hefty discount or free of charge when enough are accumulated. Movístar, in the meantime, plans to offer unlimited calls to customers on the highest mobile tariffs and to retail handsets not linked to them as operators. Bosses at Telefónica España, the Movístar holding company, say they have realised contract release penalties may force existing customers to stay with them, but they put new customers off who do not want to have to commit to a given supplier long-term.

Ex-treasurer Luis Bárcenas’ hard drive was wiped just six days after he went to prison by the PP, according to IT forensics investigating the two laptops he kept in his office at the party’s headquarters. Prices of olive oil can vary by up to 64.2 per cent, according to leading consumer’s union FACUA. They analysed and compared price tags of 54 brands in six supermarket and hypermarket chains, encompassing 165 products in plastic bottles or tins of a litre or five litres, and the varieties of extra-virgin, virgin, intense, and light olive oil. According to a report by ThinkSpain, the average price as at August 29 this year for a bottle of extra-virgin was 3.75 euros for a plastic litre bottle, or 3.33 euros per litre in a five-litre bottle, rising to 4.50 in tin containers of five litres.

Virgin olive oil figures for the same types of container cost 3.70 and 3.10 euros respectively. ‘Light’ olive oil – so-described because of its taste, not its calorie content – is

3.22 euros a litre in plastic litre bottles or 2.91 euros per litre in five-litre bottles, whilst ‘intense’ olive oil is 3.15 and 3.03 euros respectively. For extra-virgin oil, prices per litre vary from 2.99 to 4.58 euros depending upon the brand, or in tin containers, from 2.65 to 4.35 euros. ‘Light’ oils vary by up to 1.12 euros per litre in small containers or 1.35 euros in large ones, and ‘intense’ oils from 1.23 euros to 1.18 euros respectively. Differences in price of the same brands of extra-virgin, virgin, light or intense olive oil vary by as much as 64 cents, 88 cents, 18 cents and 88 cents, in that order. The overall average price of olive oil per litre bottle has gone up by 56 cents, and in five-litre bottles by 59 cents a litre, since last year, says FACUA.

Early retirement rises by 71 per cent with an estimated quarter of a million new pensioners by 2014

Workers who have retired since the start of the financial crisis have increased in number by 71 per cent as a result of mass redundancies and uncertainty about the future, according to the ministry of employment. The improbability of finding another job for those already in their 60s, the fear of losing their existing one, and lack of work for the self-employed contributed hugely to the number of people who decided to collect their State pensions early, even though they knew they would receive less money. And large national and multi-national firms which made hundreds or even thousands of staff members redundant en bloc offered early retirement packages to older workers where possible to soften the blow, instead of laying off younger, working-age employees who would face hardship through not being able to find another job for months or years. ThinkSpain reports that high-street banks have been among the firms with the highest redundancy figures, and many – including La Caixa and Banco Santander – agreed lay-off packages with workers over 55 or 60 allowing them to retire on a pension of 80 per cent of their salary until they reached 65 and could claim on the one from the State. The statistics show that since the end of 2007 – a year when 148,760 people began claiming their State retirement pension and an average of 12,396 a month ceased work for good – retirees have increased by nearly double. So far this year, a total of 21,256 people

have been retiring on average per month and in the first half of 2013, the number of new pensioners reached 127,540 – which, if the trend continues, will mean 255,080 new retirees in 2013 alone. With high costs of contribution to the Social Security system and high income tax, nearly twice as many workers in their 60s have decided to cut their losses and claim their pension, meaning they will no longer have to pay into the system, says leading union, the Labourers’ Commission (CCOO). They say mass redundancies in firms are affecting all sectors and in 2013 alone, nearly 200,000 workers have already lost their jobs, a rise of 2.1 per cent on the same period in 2012. Industries which have all but collapsed since the start of the financial crisis – especially construction – have seen high numbers of early retirees. But the government, in an attempt to reduce the number of workers collecting their pensions early and in a bid to save the Social Security pot 4.9 billion euros, has toughened up requisites for taking early retirement. Now, instead of being able to choose an early, if reduced State pension from the age of 61, workers have to wait until they are 63. They also need to have been contributing to the Social Security system for the equivalent of 35 years on full-time hours, reduced on a pro-rata basis for part-time workers.

This years event was a masked ball held at the Campoamor Golf restaurant and was attended by over 120 people all dressed in their finery with some absolutely fabulous masks. The evening started with a champagne reception and fun casino held on the terrace. The guests were provided with a sumptuous three course meal and during the meal were mesmerised by magician Graheme Mykal at their tables. Once the meal was over guest were entertained by a fantastic Neil Diamond tribute act performed by “The Jazz singer” and then danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Snoopy. A fabulous night was had once again by all, courtesy of Maria and the Pink Ladies. The evening raised a total of 1462.50 euros.

The total raised by this group has now exceeded 125,000 euros sine June 2010 when Maria was diagnosed herself with breast cancer. After a late night at the masked ball the Pink Ladies were once again raising funds the very next day at the Filton Centre in Los Balcones at a full day fun day event organised by Ricky Neil of radio Sunshine with the help of the staff at The Vibra Gym who aided him in his sponsored slim for the benefit of Maria and the Pink Ladies and the AECC, Ricky raised a over 700 euros on his slim and a further 463.50 was raised on the day at the Filton Centre

Hypnotherapy to encourage positive thinking could help people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). According to a report in the Daily Mail, the new approach uses a technique often known as positive visualisation and it can involve patients imagining the digestive system as a river. A study last year at Manchester University found three-quarters of IBS patients experienced improvement in their symptoms after hypnotherapy, and the effects lasted for five years or more. But the researchers say many sufferers are being denied the treatment because of prejudice ‘Sadly many health professions are sceptical,’ says Professor Peter Whorwell, who pioneered the treatment at Manchester. He adds: ‘It works for people who are quite ill and who have not responded to other treatments.’ IBS, which is experienced by ten to 15 per cent of the population, affects the digestive system and can cause stomach cramps, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. Its cause is not known. Treatments include diet changes, laxatives and antidepressants. The hypnotherapy treatment involves weekly sessions for three months, during which patients are given suggestions about how they can gain control over their gut. ‘They might be imagining their gut as a river, for example,’ says Prof Whorwell, ‘and modifying its flow according to their needs – a fast-flowing stream being slowed down to a gently meandering river, or the reverse for someone suffering from constipation.’ One patient to have benefited is Joanna Cowdrey, 31, a supermarket manager from Southampton, who began having bowel problems six years ago. Joanna tried various kinds of medication, but none reduced the symptoms – until she was invited to have hypnotherapy at Manchester University. She says: ‘There were no swinging watches like in films – you just feel half asleep then alert and invigorated afterwards. ‘I had 12 sessions but saw benefits after the third. It really has changed my life – my symptoms are far less intrusive and I feel great.’

Heart attack technique ‘could save lives’

A new, relatively simple way of treating heart attacks could save thousands of lives, according to specialists at a Clydebank hospital. It involves clearing all narrowed arteries when someone is admitted with a heart attack, rather than just the one which is completely blocked. A trial, involving the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, was so successful that the research was stopped early. Jubilee heart specialist Prof Colin Berry said the results were “striking” Another cardiologist, Prof Keith Oldroyd, said: “At the moment when patients come in with a heart attack they have an emergency angiogram and we usually only treat the artery that has caused the heart attack. “Many of these patients have additional narrowings in other arteries. We’re treating all the narrowed arteries at the same time to see if that confers additional benefit.” Every year 25,000 people in the UK have the kind of heart attack which is treated with an angioplasty. This involves inserting a stent, or thin tube, to open an artery and restore the blood flow. Arteries become narrowed by fatty deposits, so although a blood clot may have only blocked one artery, other narrowed arteries are common. Current UK recommendations advise specialists only to treat the artery which is completely blocked. “Most cardiologists thought it wasn’t safe to treat a

second or third artery at the same time as the first artery,” Prof Oldroyd said. “Sometimes the patients would be brought back several weeks later or sometimes only medication would be used. The results of this trial suggest that this recommendation should be revisited.” The trial involved 465 patients in five specialist heart centres around the UK. In addition to the Golden Jubilee, they were the London Chest Hospital, Morriston Hospital in Swansea, Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Half of the trial participants had all their arteries cleared, the rest were treated in the conventional way. Prof Keith Oldroyd said most patients had narrowings in more than one artery The researchers found that the new technique reduced the combined risk of dying, having another heart attack or being left with angina by two-thirds - such a significant finding that the trial was stopped early. It also only added an average of 20 minutes to each treatment. The results have been published in the New

England Journal of Medicine and were presented at an international conference in Amsterdam earlier this month. The results of this trial really challenge clinical practice.” Heart specialists are now keen that even larger studies get under way as quickly as possible. In the past, it has taken a decade or more for the latest evidence to be adopted into frontline medical care. Prof Berry added: “It’s appealing because it’s a form of usual care that can be readily adopted across the UK. “On the other hand there are logistical considerations and cost considerations. However, we would argue that reducing the likelihood of further cardiac events, potentially reducing the heart failure admissions to hospital, is going to reduce costs overall and this should be implemented as soon as possible.”

Country Music Comes To Camposol Another enjoyable night. On 6th September we had 2 new names to entertain us. The live music was provided by Dave C, who provided us with 2 sets, primarily of traditional country, with a definite leaning towards Johny Cash and Gary Lafferty, a name well known in line dancing circles, taught 2 line dances, which had everyone on the floor In addition a couples dance was taught by Tom and Helen It was a busy night—Dave C reduced his normal fee , as he was aware that this is a new “club” , and that was his way of helping us get established –Thank you for that Dave We meet on the 1st Friday of each month in the Golf Club , Camposol—Starting at 7.45pm From then until 9 pm , when the live music starts, we play requests, teach a line dance, and then a couples dance –food is available at affordable prices, Our next night Is Friday 4th October, when

FAST DEMONSTRATION AT THE LADIES’ CIRCLE, Puerto de Mazarron. On Thursday, 12th September the ‘LADIES CIRCLE’ who meet each week at the PLAYA GRANDE HOTEL in Puerto de Mazarron, were given a Demonstration by FAST (First Aid Support Team) Camposol. Gerry Bradshaw, the President of FAST and Head Trainer, accompanied by Helen Macmillan, Secretary, Responder and Trainer of FAST gave a Demonstration and Talk on carrying out C.P.R on adults, children and babies, advice on what to do if someone was choking and how to place a person into the recovery position.

The main idea of the Demonstration was to show that it was not difficult to carry out emergency first aid and the message was that ‘it is always better to try to do something rather than walk past or stand by and do nothing and to carry out the best you can do at that particular time’.

Age Concern Costa Calida’s annual Black & White Ball on Wednesday 11th September was a resounding success. It was held at the open-air venue of Bar La Sal, on Puerto de Mazarron’s new marina – the perfect setting for an evening of dancing, dining and drinking under the stars. Guests were treated to complimentary cava on arrival and La Sal reduced their prices ‘for one night only’ to show their support for the charity. A magnificent buffet was supplied by The Roving Diner and partygoers’ plates were piled high with a feast of food. The icing on the cake was the music of Martin Ross and Karen Noble - two

class acts who provided the perfect combination of styles. Martin’s dance music kept the floor full and Karen captivated the audience with her repertoire. Most of the raffle prizes were donated by generous organisations and individuals which helped the charity raise a massive 1228€. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a successful event. A. It is correct. Orden HAP/72/2013 of 30th of January has brought to life form 720, which needs to be filled

in by all residents of Spain who have assets abroad worth more than 50,000 euros. This form must be presented before the end of April with severe penalties for not doing so. All resident of Spain shall provide the Spanish tax administration with the following information: 1. Information of bank accounts you may have abroad, already in your name, or have authorization or rights to at any time of the year which corresponds to the declaration. The information shall include: • The full name and address of the bank. • Full identification of the accounts. • The opening or cancellation date, or if applicable, grant and revocation as authorized. • The average balances of the last trimester and the corresponding average balances for the last trimester of the year 2. Information on securities, assets, values or rights representing the equities of all types of entities, or transfer own equities to a third party, of which they own and are abroad, as well as life insurance and life annuity policy holders or beneficiaries of temporary policies. In this case, the information must include, in addition to the identification of the entity, the balance on December 31st, the number and class of such assets. 3. Information on real estate located abroad. This last section will contain the following statement: • Type of property. • Property location: country, city, street and number. • Date of purchase & Value of purchase. The presentation in subsequent years will only be required when the value of the assets and rights have experienced an increase of over 20,000 euro on the determined value of the last statement made. The information shall be declared in the new model 720 from February 1st to April 30th 2013 for the data of the fiscal year 2012. Starting from the next fiscal year the declaration should be presented between the dates January 1st & March 31st. Change can be difficult at times as most of us, I guess have an inbuilt resistance to it, preferring to carry on as we always have, in an environment we know and understand. So I always recall that feeling of apprehension when a new manager was brought in at work, wondering just how many changes would be made, often seemingly for no other reason than to try something different. But change of course can be exciting and revitalising, forcing us to re-examine our preconceptions and challenge our motivation. So just now, we in the Anglican Church in this part of Spain are in the process of welcoming and enjoying a changing situation as we receive our extremely enthusiastic new Priest, Rev Pauline (yes, a woman – now there’s a change for us) into our midst. And unlike our previous Priest, this one is employed full time and is committed to becoming available to all in this vast parish, quite literally the size of Wales. A massive challenge for her, and for us too no doubt as members of the Church, as I’m sure that under God’s leadership she will help us to find new ways of serving Him and the communities in which we live. So commenting on this aspect of our need to serve, Pauline reminded me of a slight misquotation of President J F Kennedy’s famous 1961 inaugural address: “Ask not what God can do for you, but what you can do for God!” And she added “we all so often come to Him with a shopping list of what we want the Church to be doing, when maybe we should be listening to Him telling us to get involved and put those ideas into practice.” So for any who have felt that the Anglican Church in Almeria hasn’t previously satisfied their needs for Christian Worship, teaching and service, then take heart, we’re ready to move on, and I’m sure Rev Pauline would love to hear of your ideas, so write to her via our Church website on www.mojacarchurch.org/contact.htm Further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org . Reflections on Snow White. The Rojales Pantomime group suddenly found themselves without a venue to rehearse in this week. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Quesada Cultural Centre has had to cancel the auditorium whilst maintenance work is carried out. Fortunately for the Group, the bar and restaurant Reflections on urbanisation San Luis stepped in and offered the group a rehearsal space. The group hope to be back in Quesada next Tuesday (17th Sep) - they also wish to thank Reflections for their generosity. The pantomime group send apologies to anybody who turned up at the culture centre to join their rehearsals. FMI fact-finding mission in Spain will leave no high-street banking stone unturned A fact-finding mission to Spain by the International Monetary Fund (FMI) will start by scrutinising the operations of Bankia, Unicaja and Liberbank, say sources from the entity led by Christine Lagarde. According to a report by ThinkSpain, following a meeting on Monday at the Bank of Spain for the start of its fourth on-site inspection of the country’s financial institutions, representatives of the FMI have started delving into the effects on these high-street banks’ results caused by refinancing their credits, and whether credit is flowing into the Spanish economy. Unless the previous three institutions need more analysis, the FMI will move onto Novacaixagalicia, or NCG; Cajamar; Bankinter, and Banco Popular. Wednesday will see the finance giant inspecting Caja3, Ibercaja and Ceiss. Few banks will escape a thorough investigation, since the FMI will meet with representatives of CatalunyaCaixa, Banco Sabadell, Kutxabank – formerly the Bilbao-Bizkaia Kutxa (BBK), and Banco Santander on Thursday, and on Friday, with Caixabank, the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) and the BMN before returning back to base. The BMN has presented a restructure plan to the FMI in order to reduce its overheads by 55 per cent, down to 375 million euros, over the course of the year 2014. It has already cut staff numbers by 52 pr cent – to 4,189, of whom 2,000 have been relocated to the Banco Sabadell – after selling off its branches in Catalunya and Aragón for 336.6 million euros. The FMI’s findings will be published on September 30. Next Monday, September 23 will see the European Central Bank (BCE) and European Commission (EC) joining the FMI in Spain to evaluate the country’s bank bail-out programme. The three entities, which make up the Troika, is due to make one final mission to Spain in the autumn before concluding its programme of 100 billion euros supplied to the country in July 2012 at the end of this year. Spain has so far only used 40 per cent of the funds supplied to repair its high-street banks. But since the financial services restructure plan started in May 2009, the State has already spent over 61 billion euros on Spanish banks. Minister for the economy Luis de Guindos has denied rumours that his European counterparts have been putting him under pressure to prolong the bail-out fund programme, and says formal decisions in this respect will be taken by November 2013 at the latest.

Telecommunications Law Will Mean ‘More Competitive Prices’, Better Signals & Ease Of Setting Up New Networks

A new Telecommunications Law will enable operators to set up internet and phone networks more easily and allow customers to benefit from more competitive prices and better signals. The existing law covering the sector dates back to 2003, and as minister for industry José Manuel Soria states, the world of telecommunications today ‘is nothing like it was 10 years ago’. Broadband, fourth-generation mobile phones and extra-fast connections are now the norm and have forced the government’s hand when it came to reforming the law, Soria explains. Among other objectives, it is aimed at increasing competition, improving service to the public, removing red tape and overonerous legal requirements to allow operators to grow, and increasing networks available.

Data protection for users, an inter-ministerial commission concerning radio-frequency effects on health, increased capacity for inspections and sanctions by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and a guarantee that all customers can use ultra-fast networks are among other aspects of the new law. Setting up networks will become easier as environmental and urban planning licence requirements will be eliminated, and the guarantee to all customers of access to fast connections will mean freeholders – known as communities of property owners – will be unable to block the installation of such networks. Operators will also be permitted to use channels which belong to other firms or which are publicly-owned.

Notaries Confirm Drop In Home Sales

Following the recent data published by the National Statistics Institute and the Ministry of Public Works, the Council of Notaries’ statistics, compiled from actual operations closed in the month, confirmed last week that, although pointing towards stabilisation, home sales continued to fall in July, by 7.9%, while the price per square metre of homes sold dropped by 13.9% year-on-year, placing the average at 1,238 euros. Specifically, El Mundo reported that in the housing sector, sales experienced a 10.8% reduction, yearon-year, and the average price per square metre was 1,351 euros, representing a drop of 14.6%, year-onyear. The number of new mortgage loans registered fell by 27.1% year-on-year, and the average value of these loans fell to 121,961 euros, a reduction of 16.1%. In addition, the percentage of home sales with mortgage financing fell to 30.4%. In a break down of the mortgage loans granted, the number of loans for the acquisition of a property fell in July by 22.8% year-on-year, while for the number of new mortgage loans for house purchases the decline stood at 22.5%, and 25.2% for all other property. In terms of quantities requested, the average loan for the acquisition of any type of property fell by 10.7% year-on-year, to 114,250 euros. Lions Cruise to a great result for ALPE Last weekend at the new business offices of Spanish Solutions and Comaskey Properties in La Zenia, the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club were able to raise a quite magnificent sum in aid of their current Charity, ALPE in Torrevieja. The event which was well attended by locals and holidaymakers alike included all day entertainment from Juan Angel, Sunflower Valley, Matrix Studio, Paul Cullen and JB Brass. There was also an expert masseuse,Marcella Kennedy on hand providing head,neck and shoulder massage. Costa Cones the only traditional style ice cream van in our area provided cool refreshment with their lovely ice creams. The kids and some not to young kids enjoyed getting their faces painted. And everyone thoroughly enjoyed the bar and barbecue organised by Spanish Solutions. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for ALPE,the educational facility in Torrevieja for disabled and handicapped children and young adults. There are still a few minor bills to pay but first indications are that a magnificent sum of 3,000.00 euros, has been achieved thanks to the hard work of all the staff and the Lions Club. The winner of the top Prize in the prize draw was Richard Cavender, a delighted Richard and his wife Liesl received their voucher from Ellena Hall of Comaskey Properties and will be heading off on an all inclusive 7 night Mediterranean Cruise donated by Worldwide Horizons in La Zenia , next month. The Lions President Janette Bennett would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the event such a huge success. Cueva del Viento is the largest volcanic tube in the European Union, and the fourth largest in the world. Translating to ‘Cave of the Wind’ and over 17 kilmetres long, the three level underground cave complex is formed by a myriad of passageways, terraces, lava pits and varying abstract lava formations. The volcanic tunnel was first formed around 27, 000 years ago by the balsaltic lava flows from the Pico Viejo volcano, located in the foothills of Mount Teide. Running underneath the village of Icod De Los Vinos, in the northern part of Tenerife, the large network of passages still contains many unexplored extensions. As future explorations of the site continue, this ensues further discoveries will proceed to expand the complex. Another unique source of findings lie in the cave’s plentiful collection of subterranean fauna. With a current total of 190 species, 48 of these are animals that can survive only in this dark, subsurface environment - these are known as troglobites. Many of these species are also quite recent scientific discoveries. A fascinating both geological and biological educational experience, visitors can also learn of extinct animals, such as the Rook or the Houbara Bustard, from the abundance of vertebrate fossils and other various skeletal remains inside the cave. Cueva del Viento is available to be explored by appointment only, where visitors take a guided tour that goes for two hours with an entry cost of around 16 euros for adults and five euros for children. Cueva del Viento not suitable for children under the age of five, nor claustrophobia sufferers and people with any mobility problems. Visitors to Cueva del Viento are strongly advised to wear long trousers with either hiking boots or sports shoes, and ensure to stay with the tour group and follow the signposts throughout the cave at all times. Testing times for kids THE NEW school term is shortly approaching and it is important to think about your child’s vision as well as all the text books and uniforms. Studies show that one in four children have an undetected visual problem which can affect their learning ability, reinforcing the importance for parents to take their children for an eye test. Opticians recommend a yearly eye test for children from three years old, yet a survey by Specsavers Opticas revealed that in Torrevieja only 39% of all the respondents had taken their children to have an eye test with an optician. Worryingly, in Javea just 17% of children aged 6 – 12 years old have ever done so. This fact is even more surprising as 65% of the respondents there felt that poor eye sight could affect their children’s performance at school. Parents in Calpe performed better, with 67% of all respondents having taken their children to an optician for an eye test. Although this is still not as high as opticians would like, Calpe parents are leading the way compared to other towns surveyed in the Costa Blanca. Experts believe that many learning

disabilities could be vision related and learning relies heavily on good vision, so it’s crucial that a child’s eyesight is regularly checked and glasses are worn if they need them.

RAF Association the appointment Charlotte was unsure and decided to take Megan to Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola to speak with an optician in English, get a second opinion and find out exactly what was wrong. The optician explained that Megan´s right eye had been overcompensating for her left, resulting in her eye turning inwards and she was fitted with glasses to treat the problem. As Megan has a twin sister, Chloe, the optician advised her to take Chloe back to the hospital to have some tests done to see if there were any problems with her eyes. A few months later, it was confirmed that Chloe had a lazy eye, which would have gone unnoticed if the optician had not advised her Mum to have her tested. Chloe now also needs to wear glasses to try and help correct her eye and went back to Specsavers in Fuengirola to choose her pink Disney frames. Battle of Britain Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving The Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association held a service of Thanksgiving and Commemoration at the La Siesta Church on Saturday 14th September in honour of all those who lost their lives during the Battle of Britain. The service was conducted by the Branch Chaplain the Reverend Chris Scargill and was attended by Sgt (W) Lynda Thomas and her husband Gareth from the Air Attache’s Office in Madrid and representatives from the Town Hall. Also present were representatives from the Royal British Legion Branches in Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa. the Royal Naval Association and the Royal Marine Association along with their Standards, which when joined with the Standard of the RAFA Branch made a fitting back drop in the Church. At the conclusion of the Church Service everyone retired to the Garden of Remembrance outside the church where after a short prayer a Wreath and Crosses were placed in memory. Place one-third of the chicken stock in a saucepan with the risotto rice and bring to the boil. Simmer until virtually all of the stock has been absorbed, then add half of the remaining stock, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, spray a non-stick frying pan with the cooking spray and fry the chicken for 4-5 minutes until browned. Set aside. When the stock has been absorbed by the rice, add the lemon zest and juice. Add the remaining stock and the cooked chicken. Continue cooking until almost all the stock has gone and the rice is cooked. Stir in the grated Parmesan, season with ground black pepper and serve.

Madrid mayoress’ poor Olympic bid English used on adverts for language schools MADRID will not run for the 2024 Olympics – at least, not while the city’s mayoress Ana Botella is in power. Although probably not part of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to exclude Spain in the first round of voting, Botella’s speech in English – written phonetically by public speech advisor Terence Burns, from the USA – has become the subject of ridicule throughout the country and the infamous line about enjoying ‘a relaxing cup of café con leche in the Plaza Mayor’ has gone viral. Botella, who says the Madrid 2020 accounts will be liquidated and published, and which will be used to fund public services and help create employment as spokesman for the opposition Jaime Lissavetsky said they should be at the time, is not taking this too personally. “I understand this country’s sense of humour and often laugh at myself about it, too,” revealed Botella, who was hopeful of securing the Games at the third consecutive attempt to put her in a favourable light for the 2015 local elections. But she is not laughing so hard about the fact that her faux pas in English is being used in adverts by the State-funded Official Language Schools (Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas, or EOIs) to attract students and call for more funding to ensure their future is safe. The EOI headquarters in Madrid has displayed posters inside – although not outdoors – bearing Botella’s photo and slogans such as, ‘You haven’t been told about it – you’ve heard it yourself: Official Language Schools, more necessary than ever, just in case you were in any doubt’. Botella (PP), wife of former right-wing Spanish president José María Aznar, was caught on camera giving an unrelated answer to a question in English posed by an American member of the Olympic Committee. Mindful of the fact that Spain’s Olympic project would be run on a shoestring, compared to Tokyo’s 45 billion dollars invested purely for the Games, Botella was asked whether it was sensible government policy attempting to host the event when unemployment was at 27 per cent and the country was buckling under the weight of high taxes, enforced austerity measures and drastic cuts in funding for basic public services. Instead of putting on her simultaneous

interpretation headphones, which would have allowed Botella to hear the question and answer to it in Spanish, she decided to impress the Committee by pretending she could understand it. Replying in Spanish, the mayoress of Madrid said the city had 90 per cent of the necessary Olympic infrastructure in place, and that ‘this could be a new way of presenting a candidature’, by having ‘80 per cent of the infrastructure’ already set up. Aside from giving two different figures in the same sentence, she missed a crucial opportunity to justify the Madrid 2020 bid against the odds presented by lack of funds. Another EOI advertising poster was headed up with the deliberately-mistranslated phrase in English, ‘No listen the ask’ – No escuchar la pregunta, in Spanish, which translates literally into the nonsensical slogan but correctly as ‘not listening to the question’. The final poster is headed up, Blanco y en botella, referring to the mayoress and Spanish Olympic Committee president Alejandro Blanco, but which could also translate as ‘blank and in a bottle’, and says: “Official Language Schools: So you can communicate, sell your product and not make yourself look ridiculous.” Madrid tried out for, and lost, the honour of hosting the 1972 Olympics at its bid in 1960, and more recently, made three consecutive attempts to hold the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Games. The city lost out to London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo respectively. If Madrid went ahead with a bid for the 2024 Games, it would be up against strong candidates such as Paris and Berlin. Botella does not believe Madrid can compete with these. “The only location in Spain which could would be Barcelona,” admitted the mayoress, referring to the north-eastern city, Spain’s second-largest, which has already hosted the Games, in 1992. In admitting that Madrid would not be bidding again in the foreseeable future, Botella said they would, however, support ‘any other Spanish city’ which decided to do so.

A couple of weeks ago gmail decided to spontaneously reorganise itself overnight – Why? What was wrong with the old way? And what about the sheer utter rudeness of it? I don’t march unbidden into other people’s houses and reorganise their cutlery drawers, so what gives Microsoft the idea that it can reorganise my inbox without so much as a by your leave? I know from experience that it is more fun banging your head against a brick wall than trying to reason with a computer, so I knitted my brows and set to; eventually, due to trial and error and multiple cups of tea, I triumphed, though exactly how it can be called improved is still a mystery to me. Then Microsoft did it again! It decided that it would sort out which of my emails were Primary, which were Social and which were Promotions. Thus I now have three ‘boxes’ to open when I want to see my post – how is that an improvement on one? I object to having my post arbitrarily categorised - Gmail is my postman, not my Personal Secretary! I expect my postman to put everything that is addressed to me in my postbox, and I expect the same of gmail. Sorting it is none of gmail’s business! This unwanted interference with gmail was nothing compared to the latest Microsoft madness to be visited upon me. Intending to write this week’s nonsense, I clicked down the familiar paths only to find that I was persona non grata until I had inserted my 25 digit Product Key. My what? It is my computer, I’ve taught it my highly secret password, so why should I need a key? It’s like opening your front door only to find that in your absence someone has booby-trapped your doormat! I wasn’t going to give it the satisfaction of asking for Help, (which is the misnomer of all time) so I went straight for the jugular, and clicked ‘Product key lost.’ ‘A Product Key is not available for your programme.’ It stated with implacable finality. Now that was simply perverse. I responded by singing ‘Jerusalem,’ paying particular attention to the bit about bows of burning gold, and spears of clouds unfurled. Strangely enough, it promptly opened up. Microsoft, why can’t you be civil enough to ask before arbitrarily imposing ‘improvements’ upon your clients? And I would draw your attention to that good old country saying: ‘If it ain’t josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk broke, don’t mend it.’

The Angelic Old Bill

I was perhaps nine or ten when it happened to me. Whitley Park Primary was a short quarter mile walk from the house where we lived, and although I always had company from class mates as I made my way to and from school; on this particular day I was on my own. The reason was that several of the kids had climbed over the fence into a nearby allotment that ran alongside Merton Road – the main route home. Allotments were a common sight in those days before wholesale building began to take a hold and any spare land was seen as ripe for development. The attraction here was not the allotments themselves, but a defunct WW2 air raid shelter - a large hummock of grassed earth standing proud of the ground - whose sloping entrance had been sealed with corrugated iron sheeting. It was this area that was a magnet to kids because it made the ideal slide, even though the iron looked the worse for wear having been in place for a good many years. I wasn’t a particularly adventurous kid, not so much because things like this were not appealing to me, but due largely to the fact that I had been

brought up to respect people and property, and this being a fenced off area, obviously meant that it was a no-go zone. I was also a bit of a wuss. But as I stood and enviously watched the other children enjoying themselves, I decided to ignore my reservations and join them in what surely was just a bit of harmless fun as they proceeded to punish the backsides of their short, baggy school pants on the rusty slide. Then as I began to clamber over the locked gates, I felt a firm hand on my shoulder. It was obviously an adult’s grip which surprised me because I had not noticed anybody else in the vicinity. I had visions of some irate member of the public about to give me a dressing down, or worse still, the local Bobby who would march me home to my parents. But as I slowly turned to see who my assailant was, the hand was removed and I stood staring in amazement at an empty street. I remember turning a full 360, first one way and then the other to spot the owner of the hand, but there was no one. It was not a frightening experience, and my feelings were simply of utter astonishment. The grasp on my shoulder was distinct and had not only stopped me in my tracks, but had gently pulled me back from climbing over. What could it have been? had been rushed to hospital. He had been sliding down the iron sheets when his forefinger had caught in a small rustedthrough section, and the momentum had almost completely severed it. I have never forgotten the experience, but it was all brought back with startling clarity last year when I read a book entitled: ‘Where Angels Walk.’ Whatever you think about the existence of Angels – and let’s face it, it is a hard thing to accept for most of us - it’s certainly food for thought for the open minded. According to those who advocate the existence of these celestial beings, Angels are constant companions to all of us, whose primary aim is to protect and gently guide us away from harm. This raises many questions and obvious contradictions, but bearing in mind what I had read, I soon found cause to put it to the test. I had misplaced a leather pouch – yes alright, a man bag - which always accompanies me on my travels and where I keep our passports, drivers’ licences and other valuables. I had obviously placed it in a ‘safe’ place after the previous trip several months earlier – and had immediately forgotten about it. A feeling of panic was setting in because another trip was imminent and without our important paperwork, we

were going nowhere. I had checked every drawer in the house; cleared out cupboards and searched every crook and nanny. Then half way up the stairs where I intended to begin my third search of the house, I shouted in exasperation: ‘If you’re listening Angel me old mate – I’d appreciate a bit of help here!’ Instantly, the image of a mattress sprang into my head and that’s where I found it; I had obviously popped it under there as a stop-gap measure and had then put it completely out of my mind. Probably the most conspicuous and silliest place to hide anything, but one that I did not think worth checking. Guardian Angel? The jury’s out.

Barrio rivalry isn’t the only mechanism of village discord. The eternal struggle between the sexes provides some good sport and forms the basis of regular and very interesting village gossip. The distaste one barrio feels for the other isn’t dependent on age unlike the conflict between man and woman where it is fundamental to the see-saw of emotions which fuel the struggle. The more senior couples, those who regard the application of decongestant chest rub a scandalous act find avoidance to be the best recipe for togetherness. Most mature Alquerian wives believe their men to be totally unreliable at best and all a complete waste of rations. The men are shooed into the streets every morning before the daily house scouring begins. Most men scuttle to their secret places to think. Alfonso Delgado in the security of the mirador remembers his days with the Ejército Popular during the Civil War. Alone in a hostile environment, living off his wits, danger around every corner, much like being married he muses. Some just wander through the olive groves counting the leaves and watching the world go by. Others walk the high sierra to the north of Alqueria. An uninhabited semi wilderness, just a vast expanse with very little in the way of humanity, rather like Rodriquez’s wife. As the older men try desperately to avoid their womenfolk so the younger ones actively pursue theirs starting the whole ridiculous farce over again. There was once a naive charm to the courtship ritual. Traditionally the courter would climb to the cliff-top overlooking Alqueria and having regained his breath call to the courtee in the Village below. The echoes from the cliffface gave an eerie and surreal quality to the proceedings. The courter then climbs back down into the Village and the arms of his intended. This tradition isn’t used much anymore as Alquerian girls of today can’t be relied on to wait. Often, after the climb down the exhausted beau has found his intended being attended to by another who wasn’t silly enough to climb the ruddy cliff in the first place. This has been the cause of many a fist fight and many a young lady scuttling off home, guilt ridden but fulfilled. Those of working age should be too busy keeping hearth and kin together but somehow find the time to join in the fun. Partners change regularly amidst brawling husbands and screaming wives. Perhaps the wedding service should be altered to read ‘Love, honour and obey at least until someone with a bigger car turns up.’

Flight of Fancy or Prediction of the Future? This article, originally, was to be about internet TV as we are likely to lose british TV anytime in the near future. The more I considered the possibility of using the internet as the means of getting TV here, the more I came across the limitations of the internet. So I did an “Albert Einstein” while he was postulating the universe and developing his theory of “Folded Space”. Where as he started at our sun and moved, in his imagination, directly away from it, only to find that, without deviating from his course, he was heading back to his starting place. Using his methodology, I started from where we are now. Using this embryonic web of interconnected computers, the current level of technology and a little imagination. My starting point is the internet. The analogue of a spider’s web is intriguingly accurate. The way the internet works is by transferring packets of information through whatever route will allow it to get to it’s destination. For example, should a server ‘Go Down’ then any packets that were being directed through it will be redirected via the nearest new, working link. This information is stored in the packet and, when the receiving computer sends a “got it” message back to the sending computer, it will include the new link directions. Now for the “What If”? What if ALL technologies were integrated into a world wide System? This would include global navigation that didn’t rely on satellites which are 23,000 miles in orbit; TV and radio; as well as a global knowledge base that makes WikiPedia on a par with a child’s note book, with every piece of research and government decision post immediately and transparently. NO MORE SECRETS, NO MORE LIES! Now there’s a treasonous statement! The next part of this ‘Study into Possible Futures’ relies on our current level of technology, which is fibre-optic cabling. Fibre optics are far superior to copper wire cabling in both the amount of information that can be transferred per second and the limitation on the amount of data lost for a given distance. The only limitation is the copper wire that is needed to get the signal into your house. This causes a ‘bottle-neck’ that slows everything down. Now for the prediction! Within the next 5 years, the answer will be found to enable the ‘last mile’ (the short distance between the fibre-optics and the house) to be the same speed as the rest of the network! With this innovation in technology, added to the incredible high speeds that fibre-optics have to offer (1.05 petabits == 1 thousand trillion (million, million) bits per second), we will ALL have local WiFi guided navigation in our car, boats and plane; TV and audio-video communication (skype but 1000 times better!); Connection to the internet anywhere, at anytime; unlimited access to every piece of educational information, revolutionary innovation and ‘think tank’ on this planet and all absolutely free. Shorts for Autumn by Various Writers My breath spirals skyward, steam rings inflating and slowly dissipating like some magic trick performed with a cigarette and a balloon…………. A number of local writers living in Spain have contributed to this selection of short stories covering different genres, extremely readable for autumnal evenings, relaxing as the sun sets. Just the tonic. Say no more! The One That Got Away by Michael Barton can be read on a number of levels. It shows Jack’s resilience and maturation in dealing with his parents’ divorce, his journey from laggard to leader. Dad was labelled as an absent parent and blamed for his son’s spiral into anti-social and unacceptable behaviour at school. The idea of togetherness in separation isn’t anything like the ideal solution that Jack’s father envisages. He wants to be reunited with his wife, however, she has made other plans; sleeping with the boss, Dave, has paid off and she has been promoted. So, the togetherness is an opportunity for father-son bonding and this forms a regular pattern of Saturday fishing regardless of the weather with the ultimate prize of trying to capture the elusive Lulu, a leather carp weighing around 20 pounds. Jack’s attitude towards his schoolwork has improved and he is a straight A student in most subjects apart from French. Interestingly, Miss Moreau, the French vixen, had been dating Jack’s father until he had decided it was indiscrete and potentially harmful to Jack’s schooling. She had then started to date the new P.E. teacher, an athletic Adonis with a six pack. Cringe. Cringe. Don’t we love the type? Whilst fishing, Lulu toys seductively with the father’s fishing line before getting away and leaving him disappointed. Nothing seems to go right for him, poor man! A further disappointment comes when Jack asks if he can miss fishing the following week to go to the cinema on a date. Wait for it…With Lulu. His father is understandably amused: All morning you’ve had me thinking I’ll catch Lulu first and all the while you’ve had her in your back pocket for next Saturday. Ha. On the way home, Jack drops hints about his French teacher, doing his bit of match-making, seeming more grown up than child! In fact he was approving of the relationship. That’s when I realise that I might have brought a boy fishing with me but I’m taking a man home. Jasper by Rosemary Westwell is different. Carrie, a schoolteacher is

complacent about her work and there is an irritating smugness about her. Was there nothing she could not do? She’s in for a shock and it serves her right. An unfortunate stereotypical image. She was unnerved by Jasper, her newest student’s unblinking stare when he advised her not to drive home via Westwood Road. No explanation offered. A bit odd. His commanding tone made his words sound as though he was a senior member of the secret service insisting on a need-to-know basis. This irritated her. Carrie thought he was playing games with her or even trying to win a bet. She was not going to be intimidated and decided to go home her normal route as usual, quickly but safely. There were two surprises waiting for her: the first was on the local news on the tv, the second more significantly during registration in school the following day! Why was there a stunned silence in class and what had this to do with Jasper? Could he see into the future? Whatever the truth, Carrie was shocked into silence. Now you must read it to find out what happened. You’re no spring chicken. More like an Autumn leaf that’s fallen off the tree. The Autumn of her Life by Janette Davies is more reflective. It’s a sad fact that growing old has its draw-backs and senility causes confusion between the present and the past. Lizzie and her husband, Geof have a villa on the Costa Blanca. Cathy, Lizzie’s mother is staying with them. It’s October, much quieter: no hoards of kids screaming and yelling or British yobbos swearing and swigging beer out of cans. In other words, Autumn bliss. Cathy is walking along the bay looking for her husband who has been dead for two years! She confuses her singers, Dusty Springfield with Sandy Shaw and thinks that the Midnight Train to Georgia was recorded by Diana Ross and the Supremes. This is bad enough but she is so hypercritical about her daughter’s husband The Idiot and how she could have married John Gardner (whoever he is) and been living in Sutton Coldfield. Now who in their right minds would want to swap the Costa Blanca for Sutton Coldfield? No need to answer that one. Point taken, hopefully? Enjoy. Publisher: Word Play. Watch Out Watch Out I remember getting my first bike aged 4; a red and blue machine with stabilisers. I grew out of it quickly but money was tight so I had to walk until my 8th birthday. Then I got my next one which was bought second hand for £7. It was really heavy, had no gears and curious brakes that operated with metal bars instead of cables and I painted it bright blue. I remember dad teaching me to ride it in our back garden. Having a bike meant freedom; my mates and I had a large scale map of Guildford on which we proceeded to draw the boundaries of our imaginary kingdom on each time we returned from a faraway adventure. We could be gone from early morning till dusk, parking our bikes in distant woodlands and playing ‘war’ or Hide N’ Seek. I don’t remember us ever taking sandwiches or drinks as we lived on fresh air and exuberance. My best friend Paul Cox and I used to earn a decent living helping the local Unigate milkman with his deliveries. Saturdays and holidays we would jump in the cab or perch on the back of the float at the beginning of his round and zoom off. The milkman smoked fags whilst he pootled along giving instructions to his two nimble assistants for what was required at each doorstep. This was in the days of Corona (every bubble’s passed its fizzical) and we would each be rewarded by a litre bottle of whatever we fancied. Cream Soda was my preferred tipple in those days yet now my stomach churns at the thought of all the sugar and goodness knows what else that I glugged down. The prestige of the milkman reached a nadir in the 70s; Unigate discovered that the Humphreys were stealing people’s milk and came up with the slogan

‘watch out watch out there’s a Humphrey about!’ Telly adverts starring Muhammed Ali, Sid James, Barbara Windsor and Rod Hull warned us kids about the milk snatchers that wanted our milk. We in turn went mad for the free red and white bendy straws, badges, stickers and other Humphrey paraphernalia we could lay our hands on. Being Unigate helpers of course put us first in line for the freebies. In 1970 Ernie was the fastest milkman in the west, Benny Hill wrote the song in 1955 as a tribute to his time as a milkman on a horse drawn cart in Eastleigh Hampshire. The lyric ‘he galloped into Market Street’ probably happened as the street does exist. He performed the song on the Benny Hill Show; it was later released as a single becoming the 1971 Christmas number1 and staying there for 4 weeks. Two Ton Ted the bread delivery man was Ernie’s love rival for the widow Sue and they had a ‘wild west’ style shoot out with Ernie being killed by a combination of a wellaimed rock cake and stale pork pie. Ernie the milkman went to heaven where ferocious dogs are banned, Two Ton Ted married Sue but Ernie came back to haunt them on their honeymoon with the ghostly rattling of his milk bottles. Although I enjoyed delivering the white stuff, I stopped drinking milk at a young age. The dreaded ¼ pint bottle of free school milk did it for me as it was always warm and tasted horrid. In 1971 Margaret Thatcher gained the nickname the ‘milk snatcher’ for stopping free school milk for 7 to 11 year olds and for her kindness I will be forever in her debt!

FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY 26 players from Fairwayz golf society turned out for a day at Alicante Golf course on Thursday 12th September. We played individual Stableford competition, and we had a “Guess the number of lost balls” prize. Amazing how they add up, even if you say 2 per person that`s 52. Nowhere near... the result was 76! The prize money went to Colin Pepperday. Some score cards handed in were quite respectable considering the challenge that the Alicante course presents. SMGS at VILLAMARTIN

The Villamartin course, which is one of the favourites with our members, had just had its late summer session of hollowtining so all eighteen pin positions were very accessible on the front few feet of each green. In fact the 18th had a temporary green which, for the big hitters, if the corner was cut at the correct angle was reachable from the tee. I’m hardly a big hitter yet I was left with no more than a 30 mtr flick onto the green and a couple of putts to record my SIX with the second ball…… yes, it was one of those days! Add to these pin placements the fact that most of the yellow blocks were further forward than normal and the suspicions of rather a high-scoring day become forefront in your mind! Those suspicions are fully confirmed when several hours later you discover that NOT ONE of the dozen prizewinners carded less than 36 points ….. including quite a few obscene totals in the forties!! NTP’s were claimed by Ray Harris, Colin Miles, Phil de Lacy & Geoff Giddey. The three top visitors were 3rd Roger Webb (38 C/B), 2nd Arthur O’Rourke (38 C/B) and top slot for the second week running was the

Gold division’s scores were a little more down-to-earth with Stevie Fleet in 3rd only managing 2 less than his daughter (37 C/B), Ken Flaherty took 2nd (37 C/B) leaving Graham Cockayne in 1st with his 38. John Parker in 2nd (42) and an unbelievable 47 points from bronze winner, Mick Roscoe, ensures Barry’s scalpel is going to need resharpening after this week.

FC TORREVIEJA SUFFER THEIR FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON Last Sunday Torry travelled north and inland to near Alcoy to play Muro who had an identical record to Torry going into the game with one win and two draws. Torry were followed by around 30 “diehard” fans who were keen to see Torry extend their unbeaten start to the season. The Torry manager took what looked like a cautious approach to the game by including 2 holder players, Valdeolivas and Burguillos in the starting line-up. Torrevieja Team: Carrión, Vicente Boix, Alexis, Rafa, Dani Meseguer, Valdeolivas (Gasch 71 ‘), Burguillos (Pastor 59’), Micro, Dani Lucas, Alberto (Carrasco 59 ‘) and Obele. Not Used: Carlos Moreno and Eloy. Torry started like a whirlwind and could and should have been one if not two up inside the first 5 minutes. In the second minute Dani Lucas played Obele in and with only the keeper to beat Obele struck a weak effort straight at the keeper. Not that long after another chance fell to Obele who hooked the ball over the bar from 5 yards instead of finding the net. After the initial Torry surge the home team gradually began to find their feet and a bad mistake by Vicente enabled Muro to play a man in who tried to go round Carrion who produced a superb save. The game then became more even but scrappy with a few too many high balls and misplaced passes. After 26 minutes Rafa had a heading opportunity from a corner but put it wide and the same happened on 30 minutes when Obele put a much easier header wide from close range. After 38 minutes after indecision in The Torry defence one of the Muro forwards struck the post with Carrion beaten. With half-time fast approaching Muro launched another raid forward and after good build up play and poor Torry defending they took the lead with Carrion being left exposed and powerless to prevent a goal. In the second half the opposition started much the brighter of the two sides and looked to extend their lead. After 57 minutes a vicious free-kick from Alberto was saved by the Muro keeper who didn’t know much about it. 2 minutes later Muro broke forward and one of their attackers beat Vicente and went clear on goal and in turn beat Carrion with a good finish. Torry then took off Burguillos and Alberto and brought on Carrasco and Pastor. On 67 minutes Muro created another clear opening but

the finish was poor and didn’t trouble Carrion. Vicente and then Rafa made individual defensive errors which could have cost Torry but fortunately didn’t. On 74 minutes Torry should have been awarded a penalty when Carrasco was hauled down inside the penalty area but the referee gave a free-kick just outside. On 79 minutes a chance fell to Torry at the back post but Carrasco and Obele got in each other’s way and the chance was wasted. A few seconds later Obele at last got the ball in the back of the Muro net but his effort was disallowed for offside. Torry were trying to mount a comeback but it looked a bit too little too late. After 82 minutes a poor header out from Rafa found a Muro forward whose shot was parried by Carrion and the loose ball was played across goal and struck into the back of the net by a Muro forward. On 87 minutes Carrasco played Obele in for another “one on one” with the keeper but again he struck the ball straight at the keeper who blocked it. Muro then themselves created an excellent opportunity when one of their forwards broke clear and should have buried it but shot weakly at Carrion who blocked the shot. In injury time Torry broke forward and Gasch had a low shot parried by the Muro keeper which Pastor seized on and struck the ball into the back of the net for a consolation goal for Torry. Torry should have been out of sight inside the first few minutes but as the game wore on Muro became the more offensive side and scored their first at the right time just before the break and in the second half added to their goal tally and ran out deserved winners on the day. The Torry manager has a bit of thinking and talking to do to his players in the run up to the next game which is a home game on Sunday against CD Utiel kick-off 6.00 pm. Mazarron’s season got off to a flying start with a 2-1 away victory at local rivals EMF Fuente Alamo. On a hard, sandy playing surface, it was never going to be an attractive game to watch but Mazarron produced a hard-working performance and deservedly took the three points. Mazarron started the game brightly with newcomers Tico

and Moha impressive in midfield but chances were hard to come by on the difficult surface. Alcaraz headed an Alfonso corner over the bar and Juanillo hit a rasping drive from 15 yards that was turned away by the Fuente keeper. Then Cecilio made a surging run forward but his shot from 25 yards was again well saved. Fuente Alamo had shown little

The second half was better for chances and Edu still caused problem though he had a new marker, but the half belonged to Montes keeper Christian who pulled off excellent saves, even though their opponents went

up front but took the lead after 30 minutes when they were awarded a penalty following a handball in the Mazarron box. Garcia sent Ruben the wrong way with the spot kick to give the home team an undeserved lead at half time. Victor replaced Juanillo at the interval allowing Alfonso to push forward in a more attacking role and Mazarron equalised after 54 minutes. Moha made a surging run down the right and, despite being clearly fouled, managed to put in an excellent cross which was expertly turned home at the near post by last year’s leading marksman, Jose Ruben. Mazarron were in total control of the game and took the lead after 62 minutes when Alfonso’s right wing cross struck a Fuente defender on the arm and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Alfonso himself took the kick and

down to 10 men, Monte were being penned back. The last 10 mins saw wasted chances by both substitute Vaz who replaced Wallace and Edu, the game was marred by a referee who could have blown up a hot air balloon the times he blew his whistle. A good solid performance by Monte who are gelling as a team nicely. La marina golf society at villamartin This was our first visit to Villamartin this year. The course was in reasonable condition apart from the temporary green on the 18th hole which can only be described as a joke. The game was sponsored by Pete Hutchinson and James Toft, so we were playing for the Tofthutch Trophy. Our thanks go to Pete for the lovely trophies that were up for grabs, unfortunately I was not one of the lucky winners.
