Ukraine clashes: Stand-off in Kiev as talks awaited

coming down from the spacecraft,” explained Andrea Accomazzo, Rosetta’s spacecraft operations manager. “We just receive a firm frequency. In theory, it would be like a continuous beep if you were to convert it into sound. “We will see it on a screen that is basically a spectrum analyser. Although, we will have no information from the spacecraft, we will know just from that transmission that it must have done everything it had to do automatically and is in a safe status; and that everything that happens next is in our hands,” he told BBC News.

Ukrainian demonstrators remain in a tense stand-off with police in central Kiev a day after anti-government protests erupted into violence. Clashes broke out as some protesters tried to reach parliament on Sunday. It followed weeks of mainly peaceful action against Kiev’s decision to spurn a political agreement with the EU, and then to toughen anti-protest laws. President Viktor Yanukovych says he is now ready to negotiate with pro-EU protesters and opposition leaders. He said a cross-party commission would be set up on Monday to try to resolve the deepening crisis. Opposition leaders confirmed this, but there were few other details. On the road leading from Europe Square to parliament, riot police were still standing behind shields on Monday morning, lined up against dozens of protesters who had camped out overnight despite temperatures dropping well below freezing. The BBC’s Daniel Sandford described how some protesters could be seen preparing petrol bombs, and others threw occasional missiles at the police, who fired the odd shot of tear gas back. EU foreign ministers, arriving for a meeting in Brussels, called for calm. “I absolutely deplore the violence that occurred,” British Foreign Secretary William Hague said, calling it “a mistake” for the government to have introduced restrictions on protest. But he said “we welcome” the government’s apparent willingness to talk to the opposition. Meanwhile, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt called the government’s curbs “the most solid package of repressive

laws that I have seen enacted by a European parliament in decades.” ‘Civil war’ warning The measures, which were hastily voted through on Thursday, include: A ban on the unauthorised installation of tents, stages or amplifiers in public places Provision to arrest protesters wearing masks or helmets A ban on protests involving more than five vehicles in convoy Hefty fines or jail for breaches of law The ruling party of President Yanukovych says the legislation is in line with European standards Late on Sunday, Mr Yanukovych’s press office said a “working group” headed by National Security and Defence Secretary Andriy Kluyev would be set up. Both the government and opposition leaders appeared to blame a small group of protesters - reportedly far-right activists - for starting the violence on Sunday. Interior ministry spokesman Serhiy Burlakov called them “provocateurs and extremists” and urged people not to follow their lead. After meeting President Yanukovych at his residence outside Kiev, opposition leader Vitali Klitschko said he would take part in talks to resolve the crisis. Arseniy Yatseniuk, another opposition leader, said he had also spoken to the president. “We must use every opportunity to resolve the crisis peacefully,” Mr Klitschko, the former world heavyweight boxing champion, said. Rosetta: Earth waits for comet-chaser signal Rosetta, Europe’s decade-long quest to put a robotic lander on a comet, has reached a key milestone. The probe, which has spent the past two-andhalf-years moving through space in a deep sleep, was expected to rouse itself at 10:00 GMT, ready to send a signal to Earth. Receipt of this “I’m awake” message will confirm the great endeavour is still on course. Rosetta is due to rendezvous with Comet 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August. The despatch and landing of the small robot currently piggybacking the probe

is set for November.

The reactivation of Rosetta is occurring some 800 million km from Earth, out near the orbit of the planet Jupiter.

Rosetta must work through a sequence of pre-programmed activities before sending the signal. None of these activities has a fixed time length. They include warming the spacecraft’s navigation instruments, and finding Earth on the sky so that the probe’s main communications antenna can be pointed in the right direction for the call home. First contact is likely to come through the US space agency’s 70m Goldstone radio dish in California. If the signal does not arrive as expected, controllers will hold off any intervention until Tuesday morning. The Darmstadt team can send commands to Rosetta that would forcibly bring it out of its slumber, but the preference is to give the probe sufficient time to complete the necessary tasks automatically. Rosetta was put into hibernation in June 2011 because its trajectory through the Solar System was about to take it so far from the Sun that its solar panels would produce minimal power. The decision was therefore taken to put the spacecraft in a deep sleep. Launched back in 2004, the probe has taken a rather circuitous route out to its comet target. This has

involved making a number of flybys of the inner planets, using their gravity to pick up sufficient speed for the eventual comet encounter. It has already delivered some fascinating science, particularly from the close passes it made to two asteroids - the rocks Steins, in 2008, and Lutetia, in 2010. Once controllers have a full assessment of the health of Rosetta, they will initiate a series of burns on its thrusters to close the gap to 67P. Currently at a separation of nine million km, this will be reduced to a mere 10km by mid-September. The landing of the three-legged robot called Philae in November is sure to be a nail-biting event. “I know that Nasa colleagues talked about ‘seven minutes of terror’ for the landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars; it’ll be more like four hours of terror between the separation of Philae and its ‘docking’ on the comet,” said Esa director general Jean-Jacques Dordain. The intention is for Rosetta to follow the comet as it moves closer towards the Sun, monitoring the changes that take place on the body. Philae will report changes that occur at the surface. Comets - giant “dirty snowballs”, as some have called them - are believed to contain materials that have remained largely unchanged since the formation of the Solar System 4.6bn years ago, and Rosetta data should therefore help researchers understand better how our local space environment has evolved over time. “Rosetta is a unique mission - unique technologically, unique scientifically, and unique philosophically because comets may be at the origin of who we are,” Mr Dordain told BBC News Read more on bbc.co.uk

Nick Clegg: If Lord Rennard does not apologise it will be a ‘defiance’ of my leadership The Liberal Democrat leader says that his party will not allow matter to ‘rest’ if the peer defies his leadership and takes up his place in the House of Lords without apologising to the women he is accused of sexually harrassing

Nick Clegg says if Lord Rennard carries out his plan to sit with Liberal Democrats on the Government benches in the House of Lords without apologising it will be in direct “defiance” of his leadership. In what could be a high profile embarrassment for the leader of the Liberal Democrats Lord Rennard, the peer who is accused of sexually harassing women in the Liberal Democrat party, plans to retake his place in the Lords this afternoon.

Controllers at the European Space Agency’s (Esa) operations centre here in Darmstadt, Germany, do not know precisely when Monday’s all-important contact will be made, but they anticipate their consoles lighting up sometime between 17:30 and 18:30 GMT.

However Mr Clegg admitted today that he had not had a personal conversation with Lord Rennard asking him to apologise. Liberal Democrat leader told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme that he wanted to “remain fair and objective” as “emotions are inflamed, and people are saying quite shrill things on one side of the debate and the other.”

“It will be transmitting just the ‘carrier signal’, so at that point there’s no data

Mr Clegg said if Lord Rennard does decide to apologise the peer will be

allowed to take up his position in the Lords and keep his position on an influential policy committee. The row started when an investigation commissioned by the LibDems and headed by a barrister last week found “credible” evidence that the peer had “violated” the personal space of women over a number of years. Lord Rennard has always denied the allegations against him and has refused to apologise after the inquiry by senior barrister Alistair Webster QC found that although the women’s claims were “credible” but could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt. Mr Clegg has made it clear that he wants Lord Rennard to apologise to the women affected but the complicated rules of the Liberal Democrats mean that is it not in the leader’s power to stop any Lord being given back the whip. Lord Rennard’s supporters now say that if Mr Clegg breaks these party rules to stop the peer re-taking the party whip they could take the issue to the High Court. Despite these issues the Liberal Democrat leader and deputy Prime Minister said that “basic human decency” demands an apology for the

women affected and that if Lord Rennard does defy the demands of his leader the issue “will not rest there.” Speaking on ITV1’s Daybreak Mr Clegg said: “Clearly it would be in defiance of basic decency it would be in defiance of what the independent formal process has recommended…and defiance of me and defiance of the president of the party and I just think that is why I hope it will not happen this afternoon, if it were to happen clearly matters would not rest there.” The Liberal Democrat leader also appealed to his colleagues in the House of Lords to “make sure” that Lord Rennard issues an apology before taking up his place. He added: ““I don’t think it’s appropriate that he should be sitting in the House of Lords if he hasn’t provided that apology. No apology, no whip, if you like, that’s my view it’s the view of many party members; it’s the view, indeed of the person who did that formal inquiry on the party’s behalf. “I very much hope that he will and

other colleagues of his in the House of Lords will listen to that and make sure the apology is issued, so that people who’ve been subject to behaviour which did cause them distress at least get that from him.” The party said it was now considering fresh disciplinary charges against Lord Rennard to stop him sitting in the Lords. Any new investigation could be ordered, it said, because “dozens” of members complained that the party had been brought it into disrepute because Lord Rennard had not apologised for his behaviour. Mr Clegg added: “I believe it’s very important in life generally but certainly in my party that people and especially people in positions of authority where it has been shown and it has been shown that inappropriate behaviour has caused to a number of women that a simple apology is issued. That is my firmly held view and, of course, of many other people as well.”

Young couple dies of carbon monoxide inhalation A YOUNG couple has died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a gas heater, sparking warnings from health authorities about not leaving stoves on when retiring to bed. María Jesús Lloret, 25 and Óscar López, 21 were staying overnight in a farmhouse just outside Sueca (Valencia province) on Friday and had left the heater on while they were asleep. They were found by María Jesús’s father, who said the stove was still on the next morning. The country house, or casita, a farm building in the L’Heretat area used as a weekend and summer retreat, belonged to the young woman’s parents. Neither of the victims’ families knew they had planned to spend the night in the farmhouse.

Post mortem examinations will be carried out on both the deceased,

although authorities are not treating their deaths as suspicious. A tragically common occurrence at this time of year, carbon monoxide poisoning through gas inhalation, normally arising through defective heaters, results in a slow but painless death. This usually starts with feeling drowsy and sometimes headachey, and the victim then falls asleep and does not wake up. All gas installations must be serviced every five years and any smells of gas – which can resemble the scent of pickled onions – should be immediately reported. Carbon monoxide detectors can be purchased cheaply for homes and a light flashes red when there is a gas leak. www.thinkspain.com

Panama canal expansion row hits deadline day Work was expected to continue Monday on a mega-project to expand the Panama canal -- a key waterway for world trade -- despite a threat to suspend operations over a bitter financial row. The Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) consortium, led by Spanish builder Sacyr, had said it might stop work by Monday unless Panama paid for $1.6 billion in “unforeseen” costs.

However, the consortium said Sunday in a statement that there was “no reason to make any change tomorrow in the status of the construction,” arguing that GUPC could cease work at any time as it deemed necessary. Ahead of the apparent deadline, canal administrator Jorge Quijano had said that contact with the consortium continued over the weekend but that so far no deal had been struck, despite dialogue

THERE’S LOVE IN THE AIR The Worlds Greatest Love Songs is the title of Melody Makers International concert at the Orihuela Costa Resort, along with Cantemos! Children Choir, taking place on Saturday, January 25th. Once again, Nigel Hopkins will be taking up the baton for two performances, one at 2pm., and one at 8pm. Tickets are available from La Ponderosa shop, La Zenia island, or from reception at the Orihuela Costa Resort (966 760 800). Royal Leamington Spa, home town to Nigel Hopkins, also boasts, as it’s “Old boys”, such kith and kin, as boxer Randolph Turpin, E-Type Jaguar designer, Malcolm Sayer, and occultist Aleister Crowley. I remember when wandering the banks of the River Leam, discovering “ Elephant Walk”, a slip way built by the local authority, to enable circus elephants on holiday in the town, to take to the waters! Not a lot of people know that. The concert, once again, is supporting the Costa Blanca Samaritans.

Following the magical pantomime “Aladdin”, that played to full houses, and received sterling reviews in local press at the time, Studio 32 are to take on an even greater challenge, but one I am sure will be just as successful, “Sweet Charity”. Original music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and book by Neil Simon, this delightful musical took to the Broadway Stage in 1966, winning 2 Drama Desk Awards, and 5 Tony Awards. Such songs as “Big Spender”, “If my Friends Could See me Now” along with “The rhythm of Love” all came from this musical, so now you know! It’s a bittersweet and often humorous story, set in a New York dance hall, where Charity Hope Valentine, a hostess, falls in love, far too easily. Auditions and rehearsals begin in February, so if any readers of my jottings, have a thought to “Walk the Boards” with Studio 32, contact can be established on 966 318 019, or via their website on www.studiothirtytwo.org or e-mail on studiothirtytwo2013@gmail.com

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN Councillor for Culture in Torrevieja, Luis Maria Pizana, along with Manuel Esteban Moreno, Coordinator of the Municipal Institute of Culture, has announced that between January and the end of March, there will be some 114 cultural activities across the city, at a cost of 18,552 euro. All well and good, buy why do the “Powers that be” make it so difficult to obtain a ticket? It was bad enough that the “Pill Box”, sorry, booking office on the square outside the Theatre Municipal, opened for just two hours between 11am and 1pm, and woe betide the prospective ticket purchaser who had the temerity to join the queue, 10 minutes before closing time! and mediation efforts by Spanish and Panamanian authorities. He stressed that construction would go ahead with or without GUPC. GUPC, which includes Impreglio of Italy, Belgium’s Jan de Nul and Constructora Urbana of Panama, has agreed to negotiate with the canal authority within the contract. The overall canal upgrade is costing $5.2 billion, including GUPC’s $3.2 billion contract to build a third set of locks for the century-old canal, which currently welcomes ships that carry up to 5,000 containers. Already facing delays, the project aims to make the 80-kilometer (50-mile) waterway, which handles five percent of global maritime trade, big enough to handle new cargo ships that can carry 12,000 containers.

The boys and girls of Studio 32 are to have on open day at Casa Ventura in San Luis on January 29th., at 3.30pm. They are a friendly lot, so pop along and have a chat. “Overture and beginners please!”.

Dancing on Ice 2014 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

week 2

All the celebrities skated together for the first time tonight making it much easier to see the quality of this years show. The judges were also given back the power of the vote (thank goodness) with 50% counting towards the final result. Opening the show were Susanne Shaw and Matt. They performed some unusual and very difficult lifts, with excellent choreography and musicality. Unfortunately, I think some of the technical elements were not just as clean as they could have been probably due to nerves. I gave her 7.5 and the judges 31.0. Next out were Sam Attwater and Vicky. Sam is a very powerful skater but again I think nerves got him too! His performance lacked confidence and I found his upper body strength a little weaker than normal. I awarded him 7.5 and judges 31.0. Zaraah Abrahams and Andy then skated. Zaraah has improved the most for me. This week her core was suddenly lifted

which gave her much more speed and strength over the ice. After the performance we discovered that she had skated with a rib out of position - Ouch! I gave her an 8.0 and judges 30.0. Bonnie Langford with Andre then performed to Sway. She is the oldest in the show but her flexibility, rhythm, line and finish are superb. I awarded her 7.5 and the judges 28.0. Next were Gareth Gates and Brianne who skated nicely but because of a weak core his lifts were rather shaky. He also needs more depth of knee to strengthen the quality of his technical skating. I gave him 6.5 and the judges 25.0. My favourite Ray Quinn with his partner Maria then skated to a samba rhythm. This was a clean slick performance full of the wow factor!! I love him!! I gave him 9.0 and he was also the judges favourite with 35.5. Next out was Todd Carty with Alex skating a solo to ‘O Sole Mio’ Coming out in

a gondola and performing solo for the first time (his partner remained in the gondola!) his performance was a poor week 1 skate! Sorry Todd you shouldn’t even be in this line up! I gave him a generous 2.5 and the judges 12.0. Next was Beth Tweddle and Lucasz. Being a gymnast Beth’s flexibility is never questioned but for me she lacks dance performance and leaves me cold. I gave her 8.5 and the judges 33.0. Closing the show were Hayley Tammadon and Dan with a great presentation to ‘If my friends could see me now’ For me her lifts looked a bit heavy but nevertheless a good quality performance. I awarded her 8.5 and the judges 32.5. The bottom 2 ended up being Zaraah and Todd and after a skate off which was no contest Todd was finally voted off the show. Yeah! game on. Now who will be able to deliver and overcome the nerves to continue to see this competition through to the end. Only time will tell. Until next week - Keep Dancing!

First picture of nun who had baby when she didn’t know she was pregnant (and named it Francis, after the Pope) This is the first picture of nun and new mother Roxana Rodriguez. The 33-year-old woman, a nun with the order of the Little Disciples of Jesus, stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy which she has called Francis, in honour of the current Pope. Sister Roxana initially claimed to have no idea that she was pregnant and thought her labour pains were ‘stomach cramps’ when an ambulance rushed her to hospital in severe pain after being called by fellow nuns when she collapsed at her nunnery. It shows Sister Roxana, who is currently in the first floor maternity unit at the San Camillo de Lellis hospital in Rieti, 50 miles north of Rome, as she took her vows and became a nun in the order last September. She told her social worker Anna Fontanella:’I am so happy. I feel more of a mother than a nun, I think that’s obvious. I decided to call him Francis in honour of our wonderful south American Pope. I do not feel of guilt. I will be keeping him and bringing him up. Tindall tweets ‘the girls are doing great!’ ‘He is a gift from God. I am little worried about all the publicity, not only in Italy but in El Salvador and all over the world. Everyone is talking about this and I don’t think I will be able to return to my home country, let alone Rieti.’ Sister Roxana has written a letter of apology to the order’s mother superior general Elvira Petaraca - the woman who in September she solemnly promised to follow her vows of ‘chastity, poverty and obedience’, the three main pillars of the Little Disciples of Jesus Order. The nun had only arrived in Italy last summer at the nunnery in Rieti and has told officials that the father is a man from her native El Salvador but she has so far not named him. Father Benedetto Falcetti, priest at the nearby St Michael’s church in Rieti, said: ‘It all happened last spring, around March or April time when she was back in El Salvador to get her passport renewed. ‘She has not said who the father is but I understand he is an, shall we say, old flame of hers from when she was younger. At some stage I expect she will tell the father that he has a son and they will be reunited but I don’t know when that will be.’ The nun stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy which she has called Francis, in honour of the current Pope+2 The nun stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy which she has called Francis, in honour of the current Pope However not all sure Father Falcetti ‘s delight at the birth, apart from the anger of her superiors, sister Roxana has also upset her fellow nuns at the convent in Campomoro. One nun who answered the telephone at the convent and who asked not to be

named said:’No we must certainly not be going to visit her. What she has done is not right at all. She has betrayed her vows. She will not be coming back here.’ Since news of the birth was announced the hospital has been flooded with gifts for the nun and her new baby including nappies, clothes and money. Hospital director Pasquale Carducci said:’We have had to put extra security on the maternity wing because of all the interest. Like any new mum she is delighted but obviously this has created a great deal of clamour because she is a nun. ‘There have been calls and gifts from dozens of well wishers and she has passed on her thanks to all these people. Medically she and the baby are doing well and I expect them to be discharged by Tuesday at the latest.’ Massimo Casciani, spokesman for the local bishop of Rieti, monsignor Delio Lucarelli, said: ‘At some point the bishop will visit the nun but at the moment he has not yet seen here. ‘We shall be investigating the circumstances behind - the child could be the fruit of a consensual rapport but it could also have been as a result of violence.

research describes DIY as behaviors where “individuals engage raw and semiraw materials Do it yourself (DIY) is the method of build- and compoing, modifying, or repairing something without nent parts to the aid of experts or professionals. Academic produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g., landscaping)”. DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement (craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness).

) ( IY D f l e s r u o Do it y

The term “do-it-yourself” has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 primarily in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities. The phrase “do it yourself” had come into common usage (in standard English) by the 1950s, in reference to the emergence of a trend of people undertaking home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational and cost-saving activity. Subsequently, the term DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets. DIY is associated with the international alternative rock, punk rock, and indie rock music scenes; indymedia networks, pirate radio stations, and the zine community. In this context, DIY is related to the Arts and Crafts movement, in that it offers an alternative to modern consumer culture’s emphasis on relying on others to satisfy needs. The abbreviation DIY is also widely used in the military as a way to teach commanders or other types of units to take responsibility, so that they’d be able to do things themselves just as a preparation for their own future.

History Italian archaeologists unearthed the ruins of a 6thcentury BC Greek structure in southern Italy that came with detailed assembly instructions and is being called an “ancient IKEA building”. The structure was a temple-like building discovered at Torre Satriano, near the southern city of Potenza, in Basilicata, a region where local people mingled with Greeks who settled along the southern coast known as Magna Graecia and in Sicily from the 8th century BC onwards. Professor Christopher Smith, director of the British School at Rome, said that the discovery was “the clearest examwith “Gunite” ple yet found of mason’s

Much like the instruction booklets, various sections of the luxury building were inscribed with coded symbols showing how the pieces slotted together. The characteristics of these inscriptions indicate they date back to around the 6th century BC, which tallies with the

architectural evidence suggested by the decoration. The building was built by Greek artisans coming from the Spartan colony of Taranto in Apulia.

Fashion DIY amongst the fashion community has become very popular. With the use of social media such as YouTube, a great number of people watch videos on a daily basis. YouTube has an array of DIY fashion videos from distressing jeans, bleaching jeans, redesigning an old shirt, and studding denim, just to name a few. This new trend is increasingly becoming more and more popular. There over 1,000 videos that individuals have posted demonstrating how to do those things. There are also other DIY videos that individuals could look up such as DIY jewelry, DIY room decor, and DIY hairstyles.

No foods are banned so meals offer balance and variety and are family-friendly. The portion size from each food group will vary depending which plan you follow. The ‘Body Magic’ booklet they provide gives ideas to help you raise your activity levels. Meeting as a group can provide valuable support.

Slimming World’s weight loss plan encourages you to swap high-fat foods for low-fat foods that are naturally filling. You choose your food from a list of low-fat foods they call ‘Free Foods’, such as fruit, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, rice, lean meat, fish and eggs, which you can eat in unlimited amounts. There’s no calorie counting, no foods are banned and you’re still allowed the occasional treat. You can get support from fellow slimmers at weekly group meetings and follow an exercise plan to become gradually more active. The plan is designed to help you lose about 1lb to 2lb a week.

Fascinating Facts About Sneezing! By Vicki Santillano, DivineCaroline

15

4. Pepper and pollen aren’t the only things that make us sneeze. Dust, pollen, and pepper are cited as the most common sneeze catalysts, but they’re by no means the only ones–or the strangest. Particularly pungent aromas and temperature fluctuations, particularly colder air, can make us sneeze, too. Plucking our eyebrows also triggers sneezes in some because it can stimulate nerves in an area connected to the nose. Rubbing one’s eyes and popping pimples cause the same reaction for similar reasons. About one in three people sneeze when exposed to bright lights, an inherited trait called photic sneezing or ACHOO (Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst) Syndrome, which also involves sneezing in rapid succession (usually two or three times). Snatiation is a term used to describe the multiple sneezes that come after eating a big feast; it’s also passed do 5. Sneezes travel fast and furiously. One person’s sneeze can travel up to one hundred miles per hour. The particles and spit emitted when we sneeze can travel up to five feet away, making it all the more important to cover our mouths and noses to protect innocent bystanders. Even if no one’s standing right next to us, the bacteria sent into the air by our expulsion can spread up to 150 feet away. You could be walking down the street through someone’s sneeze bacteria and not even know it, so just think about that the next time you fail to reach for a handkerchief. 6. Superstition’s nothing to sneeze at.

I’ve always looked forward to my dad’s sneezes. (Yeah, I know how weird that sounds.) Not that I’m constantly hoping he’ll catch a cold, but he has the best sneeze I’ve ever heard. It’s loud, powerful, and it sounds like he’s crying out “Blllleeessss ya!” each time he does it. His sneezes sound wholly satisfying–the antithesis to the barely-audible squeaks emitted by the woman I sat next to on the bus this morning. The same kind of irritants (dust, pepper, etc.) can create the same internal reaction in all of us, but its externalization is highly individualized. We all know that everyone sneezes differently, but have we ever considered why? For being such a common, everyday occurrence, that little (or big) expulsion of air is actually a complex process involving more nuances than many of us realize. 1. Sneezing’s official name is sternutation. The word sternutation sounds like a serious medical procedure, but it’s really just another way of saying sneezing. However you say it, the method remains the same. When something tickles the nose lining, the nerves located there send a signal to the brain, which initiates a chain of messages to other parts of the body–chest, abdomen, face, eyelids, the mucus glands in the nose, even the sphincter–that work together to expel the irritant. When we fall asleep, those nerves are at rest, which is why we don’t sneeze while we snooze. 2. We can’t sneeze and keep our eyes open–and no one knows why. Scientists are still unclear as to why our eyes reflexively close during a sneezing episode. Some believe that it’s an evolutionary adaptation meant to protect our eyes from whatever particles come flying out of our noses and mouths when we sneeze. Others claim it’s just one of many muscle contractions that take place during the progression. And the old wives’ tale about eyelids closing to keep the eyes from popping out is impossible. While a hearty sneeze can put a good amount of pressure behind one’s eyes, it’s not enough to do that kind of damage. 3. How we sneeze could say something about us. Of all the characteristics that potentially reveal our inner selves, I never thought sneezing could be one of them. However, body language expert Patti Wood says otherwise. She did Benadryl-sponsored study of 547 people and their sneeze habits, coming up with four types of sneezes that she believes are personality indicators. The “Correct” carries Kleenex and is careful to cover her mouth when sneezing, meaning she’s respectful of others and likes to maintain a dignified disposition. The “Supporter” tends to hold in sneezes rather than risk sneezing on someone, which indicates a quiet and caring character. The “Expressive” makes a big production out of sneezing and often sneezes multiple times at once, possibly making her a showy and dominating person. The “Driver” sneezes loudly but quickly, making her direct and forwardthinking.

There’s a lot of superstition involving sneezes, right down to which way we turn our heads. Among some people, such as the ancient Romans and Greeks, a sneeze to the right was a sign of luck and a sneeze to the left predicted a portentous future. Most cultures have an assumed response after someone sneezes: “Bless you” in English, “Salud” or “To your health” in Spanish, and so forth. In almost every language, the response translates to a wish for the sneezer’s good health. It’s thought that saying, “Bless you” came from Bubonic Plague times when one sneeze could’ve signaled a person’s assured demise, but that is just one of a few theories out there. Others claim that sneezing is the soul’s attempt to leave the body because it’s written in the Bible that Adam came to life by God breathing into his nose. As Milhouse from The Simpsons explains, “When you sneeze, that’s your soul trying to escape. Saying ‘God bless you’ crams it back in.”

SOLTIMES JANUARY 2014

When I imagine living the social life of someone like Charmaine, it’s all Champagne parties, Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels. The reality is somewhat more pedestrian. Superficial. Talentless. These are the super egos who can manipulate the

individual. Like Charmaine they are territorial and highly competitive. They may have an enviable lifestyle but behind all the glitz and glamour we have superficial characters, without real friends or genuine happiness. They trade off their good looks and media image, over-hyped, of course, pandering to the whims of their management teams and their bank balances and floating on the cloud of ambition at any price. Then there’s Ryan, every girls’ dream of male perfection and desire. He might be play-acting as Prince Charming, physically toned to make every girl squirm and squeal with delight and lust but is he true to his name? Of course not. He uses Lucy, who swoons whenever she sees him as a way to make Cinderella jealous. Lucy’s naivety and innocence is responsible for being star-struck by Charmaine Lewis, star of the pantomime with two singles in the top twenty, a cameo part in Doctor Who and engaged to premiership footballer Liam Phillips. And if that doesn’t impress you she also brags about having 700,000 followers on her Twitter account! She treats Lucy as her skivvy and Lucy seems to be perfectly happy being used as a doormat and a dog-walker because she is intoxicated with the feeling of stardom and fame. Lucy is completely bowled over by the most glamorous celebrity that

she had ever met. She was infatuated by her swishy magnificence and grateful for Charmaine’s help in being given a comedy part in Cinderella as the back end of Daisy the Cow! Lucy Tilley’s claim to fame, after six years in the theatre was to have her name printed in the programme. She wears a hideous costume, air tight and claustrophobic. The exact opposite of glamour you might say. Her fame is contagious bug.

lovely,

shiny,

Ryan had had seven top five UK singles, with a cameo appearance in Emmerdale as the hunky farmer boy. He was the man that Lucy admitted to being truly, madly, deeply infatuated with. After all, he was the most eligible bachelor in the UK. But what a jerk and eventually, after a bout of humiliation, Lucy’s bubble bursts and she sees through this thin coating of stardom and fame. Her disillusionment awakens her true understanding of celebrities and she becomes wiser and more confident. Ben is Lucy’s bovine partner, the front bit. He gloats that Lucy gets to look at his ass! She sees plenty of that during performances. He has talent and has been working on writing a play which he also directs. His ambition takes him along a completely different route from Charmaine and Ryan. He is true to himself and modest even though he is very talented. I consider the reality of living Charmaine’s life. With her fake boyfriend, fake tan, fake hair, fake boobs and a noticeable lack of sincere friends. Living in the real world must be hard for

these glamorous celebrities. Lucy has always felt that this celebrity bubble floats permanently on cloud 9 being pandered to and pampered. Botox, liposuction, silicone boobs are an integral part of being seductively desirable. It sums up Charmaine. She is fifty per cent silicone and one spritz of hairspray from being a serious fire risk. So, there you have it! Celebrity status. And what’s in it for Lucy? It’s a bit like being friends with a Jackie Collins novel. She makes my life feel more glamorous. Before you cringe, remember what I said about her naivety? She eventually sees through this act of pretence. I’m starting to get the feeling that Charmaine is full of crap as well as silicone and filler. Well done Lucy. Finally. Disillusionment kills her infatuation and brush with the world of glamour. Back to reality. A showdown with Charmaine, accused of playing the pathetic card to manipulate men becomes a moment of self-realization for Lucy. Charmaine has been jealous of Lucy’s natural beauty and goodness and wanted to eliminate any opposition. Her awe turns to feeling that she is a bit sad and lonely, her life as hollow as it could be. She musters up the courage to take central stage and to make something of her acting instead of hiding behind a costume or her tap-dancing shoes. perhaps there is a real Prince Charming waiting for her in the wings? Not a Ryan or Liam but a sensitive and kind man? That would make a perfect ending wouldn’t it? Publisher: Novelicious.com (digital publisher) Available from Amazon.

Google unveils ‘smart contact lens’ to measure glucose levels Google has said it is testing a “smart contact lens” that can help measure glucose levels in tears. It uses a “tiny” wireless chip and a “miniaturised” glucose sensor embedded between two layers of lens material. The firm said it is also working on integrating tiny LED lights that could light up to indicate that glucose levels have crossed certain thresholds. But it added that “a lot more work” needed to be done to get the technology ready for everyday use. “It’s still early days for this technology, but we’ve completed multiple clinical research studies which are helping to refine our prototype,” the firm said in a blogpost. “We hope this could someday lead to a new way for people with diabetes to manage their disease.” Exciting development Many global firms have been looking to expand in the wearable technology sector - seen by many as a key growth area in the coming years.

At present, the majority of them do so by testing drops of blood. Google said it was testing a prototype of the lens that could “generate a reading once per second”. Google said it was working with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to bring the product to mainstream use. It added that it would look for partners “who are experts in bringing products like this to market”. Google said it would work with these partners to develops apps aimed at making the measurements taken by the lens available to the wearer and their doctor. Other firms have also been looking towards wearable products that help monitor the health of the wearer.

Various estimates have said the sector is expected to grow by between $10bn and $50bn (£6bn and £31bn) in the next five years.

Positive economic conditions in the UK, including a stronger pound, could fuel a rise in overseas property purchases in 2014. However, buyers should realise that real bargains in the Eurozone are getting harder to find as European markets hint at stabilisation, said The Overseas Guides Company in January. by Jackie Nickolls The UK’s strengthening economy and bullish housing market should this year give more British people the confidence to invest in holiday homes in Europe, where property markets are behind the UK in terms of recovery.

“Scandinavians were prominent buyers in the Mediterranean in 2013, thanks largely to the economic buoyancy and strong currencies of their countries giving them serious buying power,” said Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas Guides Company. “It’s the turn of the British buyer to return to the overseas market in force – especially as the pound is expected to maintain and possibly gain value in coming months against the euro.” While average property prices in expat hot spots such as Spain, Portugal and France remain below the peak of 2007, there are signs that prices are levelling out and even rising in some of the more desirable resorts. The Overseas Guides Company looks at key markets in more detail:

Spain Average property prices are expected to bottom out in Spain this year, but don’t expect growth to necessarily follow, as Spain’s depressed economy and oversupply of housing stock will hinder any upward pressure. That said, in the most sought-after areas of the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Murcia, Costa Brava and Mallorca, prices have already stopped falling and in some cases are rising year-on-year. Buyers should

have realistic expectations and recognise that market conditions have been built into many prices, so there is little point expecting to have an offer that is, for example, 30 percent below the asking price accepted on a prime property. Researching the local market remains as important as ever in 2014. In the resale market there are now examples of repossessions being more expensive than comparable properties being sold by private vendors. This is down to banks being able to offer attractive mortgages with their properties, countering the negative perception of higher prices - but of course, for cash buyers this is irrelevant.

Portugal The Portuguese property market has seen stabilisation since the second half of 2013. This is thanks in part to a lack of new-build property, particularly in key Algarve resorts such as Albufeira and Vilamoura coming to market, the effect being a rise in demand. In addition to this, Portuguese banks are beginning to offer more financing options with repossessed property to non-resident buyers, whereas in recent years this has been limited. In the higher end of the market, interest from non-EU buyers should continue to increase as awareness of the Golden Visa grows.

headlines, but in actual fact, the new rules shouldn’t affect or deter the average expat retiree or second homeowner there. Value for money resale properties are still in abundance in France, with the South-West and Languedoc being favourite areas – and expected to continue to be in 2014.

Turkey With the Turkish lira hovering around record lows against the pound, the cost of living in Turkey has become especially good value for British expats and homeowners, making it an attractive destination. Meanwhile, the country has been tipped as a future global economic powerhouse – along with Mexico, Indonesia and Nigeria, together making the ‘MINT’ nations. Turkey arguably offers more exciting investment potential than other more established Mediterranean destinations. For more information visit http://www. overseasguidescompany.com

Tips For Securing Your Property

Perimeter Protection

It really doesn’t matter what floor your property is located on; the key to protecting the property starts at the outside of the property, the areas outside doors and windows, entrance halls and balconies. A common method used to get into the properties above ground floor is to get into an empty adjoining property and then climb over balconies. PIR lights are a good solution because the last thing somebody wants is to be lit up or to alert security or neighbours of activity and these lights have a built in motion detector where you can change the sensitivity to suit the property. Installing these lights on all outside areas, which can be flood light or lantern style, that can either replace the existing light working for the same switched wiring or be an additional new light with its own dedicated wiring and some systems even include sound and they take a photograph, for example, The Guardian ESP Guardcam, photo 1 costing €90. Pricing varies depending on type; a basic 150w flood light at around €50 including installation. Another option is to replace the bulbs in the existing lights with dawn till dusk bulbs which come on when it gets dark, cost around €20 per bulb. Adding a lock to the gates on ground floor properties and maybe a small fence at ground level may again help. If you don’t want to get an alarm then realistic dummy alarm boxes and signs can be purchased at around €60 and even include a batter supply for the flashing lights Outside furniture, which is not stored inside the property should be chained and locked into a simple ring fitted into the wall. Some alarm systems have perimeter protection sensors that will activate if anybody comes into the patio or entrance areas and of course the response stickers, alarm box with operational lights Inside the Property There are a few things that can be done inside the property, the most basic one being to give people the impression that the property is occupied, simple timers with table or bedside lights plugged in that are programmed to turn the lights on and off in the evenings and early mornings and only cost €4 each There are also a couple of pieces of advice to minimise damage if anybody does get into the property, the first is if you have a safe installed leave it empty and open. If you have a lockable cupboard for personal

effects or linen leave this unlocked. Make sure that the front door is always double locked and that all internal doors are closed Do not leave any valuables on open display; remove IPODS from docks, video games or DVD’s from view Doors Windows Blinds & Shutters The general quality of the security locks, catches and bolts fitted to the doors and windows in Spain are not manufactured to the same standards as the UK, they do not have metal locking bolts or locking handles and can fairly easily be forced. Fitting additional locks will not stop everybody, what it will do is make it more difficult to break in by strengthening windows and shutters and perhaps making it more attractive to go elsewhere to commit crime. One of the most important things is to check that your doors, windows and shutters are fitting properly, that all of the bolts and plastic retaining clips are in place, shake and push the tops and bottoms of the doors to test this. Starting with all the sliding doors and windows, the catches can easily be forced but there is a simple way to protect these which is with a screw in pin, see photograph on right, which stops any movement of the door and is much stronger than the existing catches which easily break. Photograph on right shows door fitted with pins that could not be opened. The cost is typically €22 each fitted, 2 required on patio doors, one per window Many people believe that items such as the roller shutters, known as persianas are for security but they are actually designed as a blackout for the sun which is why they are normally only fitted to bedroom windows. What happens is that a robber can force these up from outside. The blinds are stronger because they are aluminium so they could be secured using shutter bolts which fix into the frame and the shutter. On most doors and windows the biggest problem is that the frame

bolts, which are designed to lock the doors into the frames, they are made of plastic, so can easily be forced. The best solution is to change the plastic bolts on doors and windows for metal bolts and on shutters add more metal bolts internally. For vulnerable window and doors that open inwards the solution is to incorporate 2 new metal frame bolts, fitted top and bottom. The typical cost is between €40 €60 per door or shutter but pricing can only be quoted once the doors have been inspected. There is another simple low cost way to secure the metal shutters on ground floor properties, use a cycle lock running in-between the 2 doors running through the slats, cost €2-€3 per door. If you are concerned about a particular window you can also move furniture to cover a window area. Alarm Systems If you add up all of the costs of window bolts, shutter bolts, lights etc and with the cost of a typical professionally installed alarm system starting at €299, it is possibly less expensive to have an alarm fitted because this will certainly put off many of the less sophisticated criminals and just the fact that one exists may deter them and often the sig or bell box will be enough. Like many things alarms have moved on with technology the latest trend being units that take photographs of the person that has broken into the property, but looking at the typical reported profile of the offenders how likely is it that they are known to The Police? The most common mistake made is that people will install a system from one of the larger installers with a low purchase price but a 2-3 years monitoring contract, typically €30 €40 per month, or a non-negotiable annual servicing fee when all that needed is a noise maker The other issue with some monitored systems is that the main control panel is normally located in the entrance, this panel sends the

signal that controls the sirens, smash the panel and you immediately disable the alarm. Most systems will incorporate internal and external sirens, wireless sensors, a control panel and keypad with options of door and window contacts, but a good installer should hide the internal siren. Items that were typically only available for commercial users are now at a price level available to most home owners. You can buy a siren that is so loud that it would be impossible to stay inside the property or strobe lighting. You may want to avoid systems that are armed by a remote key fob and there is technology around to mirror these. Security Grills The most common way of preventing access to the properties in Spain is the fitting of metal grills, you will see them all over Spain and the only way to then get into the property is to put a rope around them and pull them out of the wall. As with all security measures there is always a balance between cost and benefits, on all of my properties I have security grills because their primary use is residential and they are located in urban districts with no security patrols. Many developments have community rules that do not allow owners to fit these grills as on Roda Golf and the Polaris World sites, owners have even had to remove them after they have been fitted, so you need to first check if they are allowed. One of the most important things to remember is that these are designed to stop people getting onto the property but you must also ensure that you have multiple ways to get out of the property in an emergency.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. My husband deceased nine months ago in the U.K. with an English will, but no Spanish will. We had a holiday home in Spain in joint names. What do I have to do now? A. As there is no Spanish will unfortunately it will be necessary to convalidate your husbands U.K. will and probate document for use in Spain. The first step will be to obtain probate on the U.K. will. When this has been done it will be necessary to have Hague´s Apostille affixed to the U.K. documents and then have the translated and stamped by an official translator. When this has been done your solicitor in Spain will inform you if any further documents need to be obtained for the documents to be acceptable in Spain. (English wills very often refer to trusts, which cause complications and expense when convalidating for use in Spain). In this case I am afraid your inheritance tax will be subject to surcharge as the time limit to deal with the tax office in Spain is 6 months unless you request and extension in writing within the first 5 months. As you and the deceased are non residents of Spain, the inheritance tax is paid in Madrid, but no travelling is needed as your solicitor will have and agent in Madrid who for a very small fee will do the legwork in Madrid under the solicitors instructions. The expense and timescale of the convalidation for use in Spain of the English documents will depend on the wording of the will. To avoid complications in the future make sure you instruct your solicitor to prepare a Spanish will for yourself after you have finalized your acceptance of inheritance.

An online shop is offering hand-made leather and nickel silver battle armour - for cats. For slightly more than £300, Etsy shop Schnabuble promises a “100% wearable, flexible, and comfortable suit of armour” for your kitty. “Your cat will become an unstoppable force for slaughter in this fully articulated suit, shielding him/her from foes while allowing unimpeded movement across the battlefield or living room floor,” it promises. “The imposing torso section features several riveted, articulated plates and a terrifying rack of dorsal spines. “Your cat’s hindquarters are sheathed beneath exquisitely arrayed overlapping scales stitched to a soft leather backing, adorned with nickel silver dome rivets.” Despite the price, a number of cat lovers have responded to the online ad - with many curious as to how the makers persuaded their cat, Selani, to model the armour. They replied: “It’s all about how you approach it. We just took it slowly and carefully with her. “Now she seems to genuinely enjoy wearing itpurring and actively modeling. “The leather is flexible and lightweight. She can walk, scurry, jump up on things, and has fallen asleep while wearing it.”

Pet parrot grasses on drink driver

A motorist was arrested for drink driving in Mexico - after his pet parakeet told police that he was drunk. The man, named by local media as Mr Guillermo N, 49, was pulled over by traffic officers at a routine alcohol checkpoint in Mexico City. As he got out of his car to be tested, police heard a voice saying: “He’s drunk, he’s drunk”, reports El Universal. At first, they thought someone else was inside the car but when they shone their torch inside the blue Chevy they were stunned to see Mr Guillermo’s pet bird. Mr Guillermo failed a breathalyser test and was subsequently arrested. Animal Surveillance Brigade officers were called to take the bird away while his owner was taken to prison. However, they eventually allowed the bird to accompany Mr Guillermo after he claimed that the bird would die if they were separated.

Good for pets health

Keeping pets active and happy in winter is good for their health – and ours! That’s the seasonal message from leading veterinary charity PDSA. Could you spot the signs of hypothermia (low body temperature)? In severe cases your pet won’t display telltale signs such as shivering. But it will be disorientated and lethargic with shallow breathing and a slow heart rate. Never leave a pet in the car:

just a few minutes can lead to hypothermia. When temperatures tumble small breeds, puppies and older dogs are most likely to suffer from hypothermia, particularly when wet. And whippets, greyhounds and other dogs with low body fat or thin coats are high risk. What to do if you suspect hypothermia Prevention is always better than cure, so keep an eye on your pets and make sure they always have access to shelter and warmth. Susceptible dogs should wear a suitable dog coat when out in colder weather. However, if you suspect

your pet is suffering from hypothermia, acting quickly and correctly could save your pet’s life. Immediately remove your pet from the cold environment and take them into warm, but not hot, surroundings. Warming up too quickly can be harmful. Call your vet practice and follow any advice you are given Ensure your pet is dry – if they are wet then dry them gently with a towel Gradually raise your

25

pet’s body temperature, either using a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, or a hair dryer on a low heat. Keep the hair dryer moving and hold it at a distance from your pet’s fur, as you would for yourself. Your vet will probably advise bringing your pet in for an appointment, and it’s important to do this even if your pet seems to have recovered. S o ur c e:ht t p: // w w w. pdsa.org.uk/

Freezing Cold Temperatures enter because pets are just as susceptible to wind chill as are we. For indoor pets, make sure that you keep the house at a comfortable temperature, even if while you are gone. Just because you are

at the office doesn’t mean your pet won’t get cold if the heat is turned way down. Harsh Wind Chill Keep outdoor time to a minimum for your pets when the wind is blowing during the winter months. A simple 10 mph breeze will lower the perceived temperature by 6-10 degrees, or more. A body sweater is a good idea for short haired pets, just like how you yourself might need a coat when going out. Keep their hair as long as possible and take them into a warm environment as soon as possible to keep your pet healthy. Snow and Ice If you pet is outside in snowy or icy conditions, make sure you wipe them down with a wet towel when they come back inside. Beyond the benefit of keeping your pet dry so they won’t be as cold, this also allows you to

remove any mud, salt, antifreeze, or other irritants that could be in your pet’s fur. Antifreeze is life threatening to pets and is most often found on the ground during winter months, making it especially important to wipe your pet down. Car Engines Cats and other small animals often find warmth in the engine bays of cars during the winter. A few quick raps on the hood of your car before you start it will ensure that no animal, pet or otherwise, are hurt from moving engine parts.

100g shredded greens or spinach, washed 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 4 tbsp vegetable oil

Add the coconut milk and a splash of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for five to seven minutes. At this point I take out the chillies as I might mistake them for spinach and inadvertently bite into one but, if you aren’t using green vegetables, leave them in. Add the greens and cook for a few minutes, then add the drained sweet potatoes, the chickpeas, most of the tamarind, the garam masala and coconut cream. Taste, adjust the seasoning, adding more tamarind to taste, and serve.

Gadgets

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

4K TVs When we switched from normal telly to high-definition, the change in picture quality was massive. Now imagine taking that up a few notches further and moving from HD to Ultra HD or 4K. 2014 should be the year these screens start their extension into the mainstream with prices lowering enough to make the them affordable for early adopters. It won’t be until late 2015 that these will be within reach of us all but in the meantime, along with thinner and even curved TV screens, this is a trend to watch.

2014 gadget hot list: Take a look what’s going to be the next big thing in technology Gaming takes centre stage As the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 begin to take hold in our living rooms, all eyes will be on new gaming experiences being created for them. With more power and better graphics, we’re expecting some developments that really push the boundaries of immersive entertainment crossed with gaming experiences. If we don’t get them though in the next 12 months, that’ll be the final nail in the coffin for the traditionalstyle home console we used to know and love.

Electric cars From the Nissan LEAF to the BMW i3, 2013 started to bring electric cars more to the middle of the road. As more charging points are rolled out across the country in 2014, expect the interest in these motors to increase. As well as helping the environment, they keep the cost of driving low with no need for petrol or diesel. All you do is plug them in overnight and off you go in the morning. Of course, you have a limited range but they’re great for local and short hopper journeys.

Sharing economy/Tech for good There are dozens of startups in the UK now operating in this space aiming to use technology for the greater good of society. From car-sharing ones like goCarShare to the product sharing RentMyItems, there’s a huge shift in creating services to help others, and for some, not concentrate so much on huge profits. This theme will certainly continue in 2014 so watch out for new ways to collaborate with friends, neighbours and strangers to make the world a much better place.

iphone 6 The next yearly update for Apple’s flagship product will be crucial. With the 5S bridging the gap with its fingerprint reader, it will take a huge jump in technology and design for the iPhone 6 to really garner positive headlines and satisfy investors. Apple usually has a trick or two up its sleeve but facing stiff competition now in the smartphone space, it will have to conjure up the sort of magic that set the original iPhone apart from the rest.

Internet of things This catch-all term for appliances in our home talking to each other is yet another buzzword but it will come further to fruition in 2014. It speaks of a world where washing machines, fridges, kettles and ovens connect to the internet and can be controlled via mobile phones or tablet computers. Watch out for many manufacturers launching compatible products at the CES gadget fest in Las Vegas in early January.

Big screen Apple TV From the Nissan LEAF to the BMW i3, 2013 started to bring electric cars more to the middle of the road.

Wearable tech Similarly, 2014 will be the year of technology that you wear - and not just on your wrist or nose. The whole sector looks set to increase throughout our lives on the back of the growing trend for wearable fitness devices that track exercise progress and healthy living. Expect to see products built into clothing as well as stuff you can physically wear yourself.

Smart watches Hot on the heels of the Pebble and Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watches, will surely come newer and more innovative mobile-linked wristpieces. In fact, at the 2014 Mobile World Congress expo, we’re bound to see loads of the things in a concept stage. But 2014 will be the year Apple launches one. Or maybe it won’t. Both of which would be a big story. The first would show the potential power of these products and the second would dismiss the idea as a fad if a company like Apple fails to take up the gauntlet. No doubt, in time, we’ll discover which one.

At 12 years old, Roddy is an old boy, and it is tragic when an old dog is abandoned as he was. All we are looking for is a long-term foster home for Roddy, so that he can spend sometime in a home environment, instead of a kennel. He doesn’t demand much and is very easy to look after. Could you be his long-term foster carer. Please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563 if you want to meet Roddy.

Quicker Up Than Down In most cases, the laws of Nature and Isaac Newton decree that things go down faster than they go up. For example, trees take ages to grow, yet can be chopped down in a trice. Or me; Running downhill I can achieve a turn of speed that makes tortoises cast envious glances at my receding rear and has snails pulling over to the kerb, muttering profanities under their breath. Uphill, however, those same tortoises will overtake me with a sardonic grin, and the snails can be heard complaining about heavy traffic causing snarl-ups. However there are exceptions – Christmas trees! Putting the tree up involves racking my brains trying to remember where the Christmas boxes are, staging a small scale archaeological expedition to extract them from underneath all the summer related necessaries that are on top of them, and dragging them into the house. I assemble the tree while uttering the mantra ‘It’ll do for this year. We’ll get a new one next year’ and hastily cover it randomly with everything sparkly that I can lay my hands on, in order to divert the eye from its sparsely

needled branches. And there it sits in the living room in all its plastic splendour, the culmination of a couple of hours of effort. Getting it down is another matter altogether. The boxes, although technically empty, seem to have all manner of detritus in them – bits of tinsel, plastic needles, etc. so I clean them out. Then I start taking the baubles off the tree, only to find that each and every bauble is covered with dust. So I clean each and every bauble before nestling it gently into its box. The lights are next. They have a Tangle Factor embedded in their DNA, so I spend a delicate half hour untangling them without losing my temper – much. Of course they are dusty too, so I clean them, carefully. The tree is now standing naked, almost needleless – and dusty. So I flick at it gingerly with a feather duster, vainly willing the few remaining needles to stay put, at least until it is back in its nice clean box. Done! Except that the living room floor is covered in artificial pine needles with incidental tinsel sprinkles. So I vacuum it. Tomorrow more needles and tinselly bits will have appeared by magic overnight, so I will vacuum it again. And again, until about June. Christmas trees go up in a couple of hours, but take about 6 months before they are truly down! They are much quicker up than down! josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

From Frédéric Chopin to John Lennon - By Air. are literally hundreds of them. We are all familiar with John F Kennedy in New York and Charles de Gaulle in Paris, but there are airports named after composers such as Chopin in Warsaw, Poland; Prokofiev at Donetsk in the Ukraine, and Liszt in Budapest, Hungary. There are a plethora of military leaders from Shaka the great Zulu warrior king in Durban, to Chinggis Khan International Airport (Genghis Khan to you and me) in Ulan Bator, Mongolia and predictably the Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport in Corsica. There is even a sprinkling of film stars, like the Indiana County Jimmy Stewart Airport and John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California . . . “The hell it is!” The church is also represented, with two Pope John Paul II’s; one in Krakow Poland and the other in the Portuguese Azores. And Mother Teresa at the Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza in Albania. Then as you might expect, more presidents, prime ministers and premiers than you can shake a stick at, with the aforementioned JFK having three airports bearing his name – New York City; Ashland, Wisconsin and surprisingly, La Paz, Bolivia. Bob Hope in Burbank; Sherpa Tenzing and Edmund Hilary in Nepal, Federico Felini in Rimini - the list goes on and on. And amongst the famous and grand a few puzzling ones like the Brockville Regional Tackaberry Airport in Ontario Canada, which is named after one George badbirdnow@gmail.com Tackaberry - the bloke

We were in Italy recently and I was impressed with the way the Italians immortalise their heroes by naming airports after them. Our first experience of this was in Venice, where we encountered the Marco Polo International Airport. Then it was on to Rome and Leonardo Da Vinci. In fact I discovered that the Italians have gone bonkers in this respect, with Florence, Bologna, Pisa, Genoa, Parma, Bergamo, Naples, Rimini and Perugia, all naming their airports after great Italians. From artists to explorers and scientists to saints - and in Palermo, two Mafia fighting judges – their names have all been perpetuated in this way. Being an Englishman, I am not familiar with this practice and it made me wonder how many other airports around the globe, bear the names of national figures. If I had heard that Corvera Airport had actually opened for business, I couldn’t have been more surprised - there

whose company re-surfaced the runway. We in the UK on the other hand stick with the utterly uninspiring handles like Heathrow, Gatwick, and East Midlands. We all know that the likes of Newcastle, Manchester, Luton and Southampton airports are in or near to those cities – it’s obvious – so let’s have some imagination shown here. I would like to start a campaign therefore, to rechristen these and other British airports with the names of some of our greatest historical figures. I mean, it’s not as if we are short on choice. It’s true that we have the John Lennon airport in Liverpool. A great tribute to a great musician and why not, after all New Orleans has the Louis Armstrong Airport. We also have the George Best Belfast City Airport and the Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster. This is a good start but much more should be done. Besides in Robin Hood’s case, he was pretty much a fictional figure who almost certainly did not exist in the way he has been portrayed by the likes of Errol Flynn and Richard Greene. He probably stole from the Salvation Army as well as the rich and I bet his men never washed or wore poncy Lincoln green, and were anything but merry except when they hit ye Olde Ale. So what about some suggestions? Here are a few of my own. There is always going to be controversy when using politicians’

The Opening

John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

www.soltimes.com

Work on the Palacio de La Paz continued slowly. Worryingly slowly, however the funds available for the project seemed to be disappearing alarmingly fast. The architects Fleecem, Skinem and Leggit had brought in contractors from the UK and they needed to acclimatise to the Alquerian environment. There had already been casualties. After swimming in the reeking Río Verde two ‘brickies’ from Sunderland suffered physiological changes. They are now starring as pantomime fairies in Nigel Ruffbody’s production of ‘Giggling in the Greenwood’ at the East Daftborough Apollo. Once the building is completed it will be fitted out as a leisure and entertainment centre for the Alquerian people. No one barrio would dominate with all entertainment and pastimes non-controversial. The idea was to soothe nerves and foster tolerance. Reirmucho S.A. of Almería agreed to handle these activities. They duly set about researching local Alquerian customs to find something common to both barrios. After much work they came to the conclusion that the only common customs appeared to be womanising, gambling and drinking. The last two were easy to achieve in the form of a casino with an integral bar. As for the first, they sought the advice of the capable and ever willing Manuela. No foreign entertainers could be persuaded to visit Alqueria. The Pueblo has been on a black list ever since a group of Morris Dancers performed there some two years ago. After being in the Village for only two hours they needed counselling and all turned in their bells and ribbons. Most visitors from the outside tended to drive cars with flashing blue lights on. Whether by luck or sheer hard work it is difficult to say but the day of opening eventually arrived. All Alquerians, apart from Loco Paco who was busy shoeing his Saharan Dung Beetle made the trek across the Río Verde. The opening ceremony was itself a triumph of absurdity. Rodriquez of the Newcomer’s barrio and Poyato representing the Hill People pulled the lanyard simultaneously. What looked like an extremely large brown paper bag dropped away revealing the structure. To say it was the most hideous building imaginable would be an understatement. The Newcomers blamed the Hill People and vice versa. The ensuing riot lasted for three days and nights, during which time, ironically, the new building came into its own. It was pressed into service as a first-aid station for these and subsequent inter-barrio hostilities. It appears that the only common aspect between the two barrios are the casualties caused by the inter-barrio fighting sparked by their differences. names, but hey, how could we not re-name Heathrow: London Winston Churchill Airport. And at the heart of our capital, how about London City Christopher Wren. There is only one possible name for Birmingham, being so near to the Bards home town, and that surely has to be the Birmingham William Shakespeare International Airport. Similarly Norwich re-named after a city daughter -Elizabeth Fry. But it need not be a pre-requisite that the figure concerned is born in the appropriate city, but where there is a strong connection this would be reason enough. For example: the Bristol Isembard Kingdom Brunel Airport. If you think that’s too much of a mouth full, then think yourself lucky you don’t live close to the M’Vengue El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba International Airport in Gabon! It could be decided by we the people and not only would it be a long overdue display of patriotism, but a signal to the world that here is a country that is proud of its history.

We had an upgrade to our satellite system last week and I realised, that’s why our life expectancy has improved. Nothing to do with medical science, better diet or even Darwin’s evolution theory, it’s all down to technical support helplines! The technicians were in our house all day last Saturday. Three hours they said it would take! I hope the satellite system works better than their watches. They spent their time gouging out a place in our lounge wall for the unobtrusive satellite hub to go. It was about as unobtrusive as Mount Everest! They fed cables through the wall then to top it off, and for no reason that we could fathom, they dug a big hole outside our front gate, like one of those traps that Tarzan would sometimes accidentally fall into in the jungle. To their credit, they did fill the hole in, but somehow managed to use only half the soil they had dug out of it, so at the moment we have a mucky knoll outside our front gate. But who cares, now we have more channels! We can watch “The Weakest Link” in four different languages at the same time and now most of the channels have child safe options so TCM, the Turner Classic Movies channel, has been sanitised and become TCP! And we have a new remote control! The next day, the system broke down! After a few choice words, similar to, “Oh cripes,” and “Golly, that’s dashed bad luck,” we called the helpline; we took it in turns listening to the soothing music being played to us, whilst the technician was helping another client; we initially smiled when we heard a friendly voice telling us, every so often, that they valued our custom; we chuckled when that same voice told us our call would be recorded for training Graham is married purposes. Eventually, after three hours, we began to get to Helen and has a a little niggly, you know, about on a par with international daughter, Alice. He relations just before a war! Then I knew; Darwin was wrong, lives part of the year near Albox, but works it has nothing to do with evolution, we live longer now so we can spend so many years of our lives waiting long enough in Qatar, teaching. If to speak to a trained operative! you wish to contact Graham regarding When we finally reached a human he solved our problem, this article email: thanked us for our call and said it had been his pleasure to helenandg@yahoo. help us. A Kodak Moment Remember the good old days when having dinner in a restaurant; someone would whip out their 35mm camera and photograph plates of food; then 23 or 35 shots later when the film was finished it would be sent off to be processed. A few weeks later when the photos were posted back they would then visit their friends’ houses to show them the photos of the dinner they had eaten a while back? As I suspected, none of us remember ever doing the above do we! What we of a certain age may recall however is that sense of excitement and trepidation. Firstly when a roll of film was sent off to be developed, then for the second time when the fat envelope thudded onto the doormat or was picked up from a processing lab like Boots. A commercial photographer could get a sneak preview at the lab but for us mere mortals we had no idea what results would slide out of the envelope. Nowadays it’s all so different and the word ‘Selfie’ has made it into the dictionary. Usually there were 24 or 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film; sometimes the number reel on the camera kept going and an extra shot or two could be taken before having to hand wind the film back into its cartridge. Simple pleasures eh! In the early 70s Kodak launched its Instamatic brand using a 120 cartridge which didn’t need rewinding. Coincidentally the 120 cameras were relatively slim line, not unlike the size and shape of the larger Android phones

today. 120 was a hugely successful format and Kodak only stopped making the cameras in the mid-80s, then the film cartridges a couple of years ago. Smaller niche manufactures have now taken over the reins for the many camera buffs out there. Until around 2000 film cameras were the norm rather than the exception. Then as technology leapt forward the digital era stormed the world of photography. In 2003 Kodak launched the EasyShare camera; it was the first camera to have an AMOLED display screen, the forerunner to the screens used on many phones and tablets nowadays. Kodak had conducted extensive market research discovering that women especially didn’t like the inconvenience of getting photos printed. So the camera was designed to plug straight into a Kodak printer. A year later they stopped producing film cameras, laying off 15,000 employees. The World’s first commercial digital camera was made by Kodak and sold under the Apple label in 1994. Even earlier in1986, the Kodak boffins created the first megapixel sensor; it was capable of taking a 7x5inch photo with its 1.4 megapixels. Even though their R&D was excellent Kodak’s bosses didn’t believe that digital would ever replace film. Competitors such as Minolta, Sony, Nikon and Fuji were so

much better at exploiting the new technology and making more stylish and importantly cheaper products! Kodak went from being a major player in the digital camera market and having 27% of the market in 1999 to filing for bankruptcy in 2012. What also didn’t help Kodak was that from about 5 years ago, mobiles and tablets got better and better cameras attached so people stopped buying as many cameras. Kodak also ceased production of their Kodachrome film in 2010 which was something Kodak execs never thought would happen. Kodachrome was introduced in 1935 and was the first commercially available colour film, responsible for many of the iconic images of the 20th Century. Steve McCurry took this shot in1985 for National Geographic using Kodachrome film, it’s known simply as ‘Afghan Girl!’

How many times have I told you to do a system backup “Just in case”? How many of you have followed that recommendation? Or do you have a manufacturer created backup that you can rely? At the time of writing this article, my favourite program to create this system backup is called “EASEUS TODO BACKUP”. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t other’s that are better or more intuitive! This free version is for personal use, should I use it for business I would happily pay money for it (but it you repeat that – I will deny ever saying it :-)!). To find it, open your favourite browser and go to <<http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm>> The “how to install and set up” of this program was covered months ago in an article for your Fav. Rag. So today you will be getting just a list of simple instructions on how to recover from that virus / malware attack that just won’t go away. Though, you need to know that, any programs, documents, music, videos, pictures, in fact everything not in the original image WILL BE LOST! So back up your data to an external safe device before you start. How To Restore Using TODO BACKUP 1. Turn on computer and insert the restore CD into the drive. Then Restart your computer, making sure that your computer will start up from a CD drive. 2. When the menu is displayed the first option “EaseUS Todo Backup” is highlighted. Just press the “Enter” or “Return” key. 3. Wait until Screen One appears. In the Free version the default screen is the “Recovery” option where you will see 3 options. 3.1 Disk/Partition Recovery.. 3.2 System Recovery. 3.3 File Recovery. Select “Disk/Partition Recovery” and click on the button at the bottom of the screen marked “Next”. 4. On Screen Two you will be shown a circle next to the picture of the hard drive, Click on the circle to put a dot in it and then click on the button at the bottom of the screen marked “Next”.

5. Screen Three wants to know which drive, if you have more than one, that you want to restore to. The default is the same one that it came from. 6. Screen Four confirms that the image will match the drive it will go onto and allow any minor changes to partitions (NOT advisable unless you understand what partitions are!). Click on the button at the bottom of the screen marked “Next”. 7. Screen Five confirms that everything is where it should be. If you are happy with everything click on the button marked “Proceed”. 8. One final warning is the “Last Chance Saloon” for backing out by telling you that you are about to destroy everything that is currently on your disk. When you click on the button marked “Ok” your image will be restored back to the drive that you have chosen. 9. Wait until the button at the bottom of the screen which is marked “Cancel” changes to “Finished”. Click in it to return to Screen One. Remove the CD, turn your computer off and then back on. 10. Your system is back to the way it was before it all went wrong. It will probably want to do a restart because “Windows” thinks something has changed, Click to allow this restart and then enjoy your fully restored and working system. Diesel is a lovely black cat, and one of many black cats in the APAH Cattery. Sadly very few black cats are chosen for adoption and given a chance at a loving home. Can you give a lovely black cat the chance of a happy home life? To arrange to visit the APAH Cattery, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

Smile Charity Group enjoyed a resounding success with their latest offering of an originally scripted mini Pantomime. This was performed at The Hotel Marina, in Benidorm on Boxing Day, with further performances at The Marjal Camp Site, The Club – Quesada, and El Alto La Dolores Restaurant. Tickets were completely sold out well before each night, and audiences described the production as “excellent entertainment”; “it was so much fun” and “when are you doing the next one?”. Of course, this small group of individuals, perform primarily to raise money for various charities. As a result of this ‘mini tour’, they were able to raise over 700 euros for Elche Children’s Home, 530 euros for the Benijófar Crisis Appeal, and another 500 euros for Altea Children’s Home. A great achievement, you’ll agree!

In November 2013, APAH Animal Rescue Charity suffered a huge shock, when Buena Adamson; a very special lady, who was a volunteer in their shop in San Miguel de Salinas died suddenly. Everyone was stunned, especially her devoted husband and sister; Jim and Pat; who is also a volunteer in the shop. Buena’s family travelled over from the UK and were joined by many of APAH’s volunteers at her funeral service in San Pedro. There, it was announced that a collection would be taken, and it was the family’s wish to donate it to APAH. Donations to the collection have been coming in ever since, from many of the neighbours and friends which Jim and Buena made during the time she lived in San Miguel. Last Thursday APAH was humbled and delighted to accept 475 euros. It is a wonderful amount, which was born out of tragedy, but APAH wants to assure everyone who wanted to honour Buena’s memory by donating, that every single euro will be spent on the dogs and cats in APAH’s care.

Mazarron were perhaps a little unlucky to come away pointless from high flying Beniajan on Sunday in a thoroughly enjoyable and competitive game. The first half belonged to Mazarron who led 2 – 0 at the interval. However, an injury to goalkeeper Noguera towards the end of the first half changed the game and Beniajan scored three times after the break to consolidate their position in second place in the league table. time this season, new signing Tolo was the sole striker and showed plenty of speed and the ability to make a nuisance of himself. He could well make a useful partnership with Ruben when they get to link up together. Mazarron took the lead after 30 minutes when Jose Da collected a loose ball and his shot was deflected high in the air, but Tolo ran on to it and headed his first Mazarron goal. Mazarron’s second goal came just five minutes later from an excellent long range effort from

Despite a few nervous moments before half time including the incident in which Noguera was injured and booked, Mazarron were well worth their lead at this stage. Noguera was unable to resume after the interval and replaced by Ruben in goal. Almost immediately a speculative long range shot from distance was missed by Ruben and Mazarron’s lead was halved. Beniajan took the points with two further long range efforts, the second coming with about five minutes remaining. However both teams had good chances in the final few minutes including a header from Mazarron’s substitute Cecilio which hit the post.

Unfortunately the result means that Mazarron lost further ground on the promotion chasers but this was a far more spirited display than in last week’s game. A bit of Lady Luck came into play when both Darryll Wright and Pat Ogden played shots to a green with water on the left. Both shots were a bit wayward and hit the wall alongside the lake. Pat’s shot rebounded back into play while Darryll’s produced a splash. Lady luck sometimes does come into play.

PLAYERS at LA TORRE on the 15th – IMPORTANT. As secretary of SMGS I have been informed by Chris Ahearn at La Torre that on Wednesday when we play there, all players will be “asked” to fill in a form requiring personal details. I have expressed my concern under the terms of the current data protection rules over this action but I am disappointed to be told that anyone refusing to comply will not be allowed to play. The form simply requires your full name, your nationality, your signature and your email a d d r e s s…….t h r o u g h which, I feel sure, you will then receive publicity emails. This appears to be their heavy-handed way of forming a data base. However, they have conceded that if a player doesn’t remember his/ her email address or, in fact, does not have

email, then to leave this section blank and insert nothing is to be deemed as acceptable. This is the action that I would recommend if you don’t wish to disclose your email address. Please note that they already have Barry’s and my email addresses, which were willingly provided, and we publicize on the website any info which we receive and believe may be of interest to the membership. Please also be aware that the Murcian courses, because of their Golf Federation’s different rules, charge twice as much (€3 per person) as our local courses for the newly introduced “golf license”. Ship Hispaniola Golf Society Ship Hispaniola Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Roda on 13th January 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 25 players visited the established course at Roda under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For 2014 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case. Unfortunately the no show of two players caused problems for the organisers with groupings having to be changed to avoid additional buggy costs but this caused much confusion on the first tee. Eventually all the players got themselves onto the courses which was in excellent condition and there were some pretty good scores on the day which reflected this.

The winning scores were as follows: 1st – Mike Probert – 39 points (off 2 handicap!) 2nd – Dave Bensley – 37 points 3rd – Kevin Robinson – 37 points Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert (2) and Dave Bensley Team Waltz – Allan Rickett, Grant Goble, Kevin Robinson and Steve Sissons – 91 points followed closely by Mike Probert, Dave Bensley, Dave Marriott and Steen Tidemann – 87 points Below are the fixtures arranged to date for this season 10 Feb - Las Ramblas 10 March - Font del Llop 14 April - La Serena 12 May - Mar Menor 8-9 June – Benidorm away trip 14 July – La Finca 11 August - Alicante Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blancagreenfees.com.

The winner of the President’s Putter now receives a trophy rather than a putter. The weather started off a little cool but those playing towards the end of the field got more than a bit wet. TMGS Match Report TMGS Match Report for La Serena, 15th January 2014 26 turned out for our latest trip to the gentle watering hole of La Serena where, as many know, 16 holes will grab your balls and of course, I do mean the holes where the water is present and not some fictional mermaid with sharp nails. It has to be said that the course is in very good condition and the staff were very obliging, as

they always are on this course. Many are put off with the potential loss of their balls on this water ridden course, but it still remains a popular venue of TMGS. On the day, it is fair to say that many golf balls were “mislaid” in the stuff that goes “splash” when a solid object falls from the sky and hits it and therefore there is no doubt that the sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels for the NTP’s were of great value to Kjell Aasbo,

Jenny Morris and Sandra Twentyman. It was noticed by many, that on the 15th there was no “NTP” marker and unable to show initiative of the Gold Members – where on their scorecards it is highlighted quite clearly that Hole 15th is a Gold Members NTP - they made the Treasurer a happy chappie and ignored the fact that it was an NTP for their Division therefore saving the Society a sleeve of balls. That said, 4 players took a sleeve of balls for their “2’s” on the par threes and Chris Oatley, John Eyre. Jenny Morris and Roy Rogers were happy to replenish their lost stock. The scores on the day were surprisingly decent with many over 30’s returned and it needed 32 points for Jenny Morris to take 4th spot, beaten by our Austrian lady Olga Haubner on the count-back system. 2nd place went to John

Maybe it was those Christmas presents not working. However, continuity seems the order of the day with four of our members all coming in with 33 points. The course was not up to its usual standard with a lot of pitch and spike marks on the greens (someone wearing metal spikes!! ) and the bunkers were not being raked, looks like some etiquette lessons are needed.
