Jeremy Clarkson branded a racist after remark on Top Gear programme

The BBC is facing demands by Equal Justice, a firm that specialises in race discrimination cases, that it conducts a formal investigation after presenter Jeremy Clarkson allegedly used a racist term to describe an Asian person during an episode of Top Gear. Actress Somi Guha, 36, has instructed her lawyers after Clarkson used the word “slope” – a derogatory term for people of Asian descent during an episode filmed in Burma. During the show, presenters Richard Hammond, James May and Clarkson were tasked with constructing a bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand. After completing the task, Clarkson, 53, said: “That is a proud moment, but there’s a slope on it,” as a man walked towards him on the makeshift bridge, to

which Hammond replied: “You’re right, it’s definitely higher on that side.” Equal Justice, who are representing Miss Guha, said: “The BBC is obliged to do a full investigation. If they find that the show sells itself on racism, then they should decommission it.” In her complaint, Ms Guha, who has appeared in the film Children of Men, said: ‘Casual racism in the media by established BBC stalwarts is constantly brushed aside. Discrimination within the industry is accepted. Racial profiling of roles is accepted and expected. I find it offensive that Jeremy Clarkson refers to people of different races in pejorative terms.’ In a letter to BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten, Equal Justice said Clarkson’s comments are “clear gross misconduct on his part and would be considered as such in any modern British workplace”. 2 “Please process this complaint as a matter AVAILABLE FROM €63,000, of urgency and give due STUNNING LOCATION AND VIEWS! consideration to not recommissioning Top 1.5kms TO THE CLOSEST Gear for another series until these matters are URBANISATION AND addressed.” 4.5kms TO THE SEA. Top Gear has declined TEL: 966 184 805/634 174 978 to comment on the allegations so far.

The search for Flight MH370 changes area

The search for wreckage from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been moved 1,100km to the north-east following a fresh analysis of radar and satellite data. This fresh analysis suggests that the Boeing 777 – which vanished soon after taking off from Kuala Lumpur three weeks ago – was flying faster than had been initially estimated, and therefore would have run out of fuel more quickly. Five aircraft deployed to comb the new search area of the Indian Ocean quickly found multiple objects that ships will now try to locate. Items spotted from the air included two rectangular objects that were blue and grey: two of the colours in the aircraft’s livery. Others were white or light-coloured. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa), which is co-

ordinating the hunt, said photographs of the objects would be analysed to determine their origin. For the past week, aircraft and ships have been crisscrossing an area about 2,500km south-west of Perth, pinpointed as the most likely spot where MH370 is presumed to have run out of fuel and crashed, killing all 239 passengers and crew. Now search teams have moved to an area about 1,850km west of Perth, where their task will be easier. Not only is it closer to Australia, meaning spotterplanes can spend more time searching before they have to return to refuel, but the weather is more benign than further south, which is in the middle of a belt of strong westerly winds known as the Roaring Forties.

Whole building collapses after ‘engineer took out the wrong brick’

An engineer was left staring at a houseshaped hole after an entire building collapsed seconds after he dislodged a few bricks from the exterior wall. Video footage captured by a bystander shows the man standing in a cherrypicker dislodging bricks one at a time from the top of the front face of a derelict building in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. He can be seen picking out the bricks when suddenly the entire building collapses into a heap without warning.

The building was once the home of troubled poet Francis Thompson and had a blue plaque to commemorate the fact. However, the property, which is privately owned, was boarded-up and had been disused for some time, according to Tameside council. According to The Manchester Evening News police had been called earlier that morning following reports of falling bricks and engineers were dispatched to make the building safe. No-one was hurt.

CHARABANCE TO THE VINES!

Representatives of Eroski, San Javier, joined members of A.D.A.P.T., on a visit to Bodegas Serrano, Finca La Cabana, Pozo Estrecho, in the fields between Torre Pacheco and the City of Cartagena, on Monday March 24th.. It was explained that the harvest took place during

July, with many tonnes of grapes being cleaned, detwigged and crushed, before entering the stainless steel fermentation tanks. Fermentation takes around between 15 to 20 days, and can be slowed down or increased, dependent upon the required alcohol level of the wine being processed. Small though the bottling plant is, it handles some 800 bottles an hour. No metal bottle tops are used here. Good wine deserves cork, so Bodegas Serrano uses cork! It was soon time to sample the wines produced at Finca La Cabana. To accompany these fine wines, were, courtesy of friends at Eroski, numerous plates of goat cheese. Bottles of red, white, rose’, sparkling and desert wine, were rapidly opened, with no offered glasses being refused a refill. After many purchases were made, members made their way into the sunshine, and the coach, for the return to Dos Mares.

EIGHTY TREASURE HUNTERS IN PILAR

I mentioned, in a recent “Barnes Bulletin”, that Pilar de la Horadada was about to join in with the nationwide sport, pastime or activity, call it what you will, of Geocaching. It has been said that some six million people now take part in this treasure hunt with a difference across Spain. A couple or so weeks ago, 80 participants, of all ages, clutching sat. navs., along with top of the range mobile phones, headed off into the undergrowth, for an hour and a half,

along the dry river bed of the local Rio Seco. Clues to locate the eight treasure locations, were given electronically to the devices help by all involved. Once found, a note was made on the paperwork alongside the treasure, and then away to find the next hidden object. Councillor for Tourism in Pilar, Eva Martinez, tells me “Geocaching gives excitement and smiles for everyone, especially the youngsters” I can’t help but agree with the good councillor. The next, much larger event, will take place in May, between the 2nd., and 4th.. over many areas of Pilar de la Horadada. For information on how to join in, or just to find out a little more about this activity, check out the following website: www.geocaching. com

Atos contract to end

The firm Atos, which assesses whether benefit claimants in Britain are fit to work, is to finish its contract early, after government criticism over “significant quality failures”. Disabilities Minister Mike Penning said a new company would be appointed in early 2015, and Atos would not receive “a single penny of compensation”. Atos, who were due to finish in August 2015, said the settlement was “in the best interests of all parties”. Last month, Atos said it was seeking to end its government contract under which it carried out the Work Capability Assessments, though it will continue to carry out the assessments in Northern Ireland under a separate contract.

7

News It will also continue with assessments for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - another welfare change introduced by the government - in Scotland, the north of England, London and the south of England. Atos has been criticised over the number of these assessments it has made as well as for lengthy waiting times. Disability campaigners have described the work tests as “ridiculously harsh and extremely unfair”. Last summer, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) identified “significant quality failures” in the written reports Atos produced after the tests. Richard Hawkes, chief executive of disability charity Scope, said: “I doubt there’s a single disabled person who’ll be sorry to hear that Atos will no longer be

Chancellor George Osborne denies currency deal claim

Chancellor George Osborne and Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander have insisted it is “wrong” to suggest there would be a currency union between the UK and an independent Scotland. An unnamed UK government minister has suggested that it says would play a central role in the negotiations over the break-up of the UK if there were a yes vote. The unnamed minister apparently said: “There would be a highly complex set of negotiations after a yes vote with many moving pieces. The UK wants to keep Trident nuclear weapons at Faslane and the Scottish government wants a currency union - you can see the outlines of a deal.” The Treasury, along with Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls, has previously ruled out a currency union. In a joint statement, George Osborne and Danny Alexander said: “There will not be a currency union in the event of independence. The only way to keep the UK pound is to stay in the UK. Walking out of the UK means walking out of the UK pound. What is it all about? Who? Voters in Scotland will go to the polls to vote on their country’s future. When? The vote takes place on Thursday, 18 September, 2014. What? They will be asked a yes/no question: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

running the fit-for-work tests.” He said the “fundamentally flawed” test should be “more than an exercise in getting people off benefits”. It should make sure disabled people get the specialist, tailored and flexible support they need to find and keep a job.” Doctors, MPs and disabled people all believe the tests should be scrapped so, instead of replacing the failed Atos with another profit-hungry provider, the government should bring the work in-house and invest in it properly.” And charity Sense called for a “root-and-branch reform of the system to ensure disabled people are judged fairly on their ability to work”.

We’re already growing purple carrots, yellow courgettes and white asparagus. But black tomatoes are the must-have crop for greenhouses this season, growers say. Not only will the dark toms turn heads at the allotment society, they are also healthier than normal red varieties, according to plant scientists. The new tomato starts out as a normal green fruit, but ripens to a jet-black colour. On sale for the first time this year, the new ‘Indigo Rose’ was cultivated by breeding red and purple tomato plants, and is being heralded as a new superfood. Scientists in America bred purple tomatoes contained anthocyanin, an antioxidant said to help fight diabetes and obesity, with normal red varieties.

BIG CUTS FOR BETTER BUTTERFLIES

Devon-based Sutton Seeds have secured the rights to start selling the new plants in the UK for the first time this spring. Alfie Jackson, assistant product manager at Suttons Seeds of Paignton, Devon, said: ‘They are not as sweet as normal tomatoes and have a more savoury flavour, and are nice roasted or eaten in salads. ‘There are some dark coloured tomatoes but Indigo Rose is the only real black tomato and is the darkest that has ever been bred. ‘It was bred by Professor Jim Myers at the University of Oregon in the US and came about after a graduate student was interested in looking at health benefits in tomatoes. ‘They found some tomatoes with purple pigmentation and tests revealed that anthocyanins were providing the colour, the same as blueberries. ‘They crossed the purple tomatoes with some wild tomatoes and eventually came up with a black strain. This is the first time they have been available to buy in the UK.

Flowers of Buddleia davidii — butterfly bush (right) — develop from dormant buds that will burst and grow during the coming months. If you prune last year’s old flower stems hard back to the base of the plant, new shoots will grow with greater vigour and produce larger, longer-lasting flowers from July onwards. As the name suggests, butterflies love them. Be brave and cut every long stem back to the lowest buds, just above the main trunk. Remove any thin, weak or damaged stems, cutting flush with the trunk, and if the branches are congested, remove a few to make a more open bush. Pruning like this prevents the buddleia from growing into a tall, weak-stemmed tree. This technique is only suitable for late-flowering buddlejas, including B. davidii and B. x weyeriana. Don’t use it for B. globosa or B. alternifolia, which flower on the previous year’s growth.

LAST OF THE JASMINE Discipline your jasmine. Of all winterflowering plants, yellow jasmine is the most dependable and also one of the prettiest. It’s a terrible thug however, creeping in all directions and rooting wherever the stems touch the ground. As the last blossoms fall on your jasmine, remove any branches that have grown beyond their allotted space. Trim lowhanging stems to keep them clear of the ground and pull up any that may already have taken root. If you want to propagate new winter jasmine plants, do the reverse: tuck a couple of stem ends into the soil while they’re still attached to the main plant. In a few weeks, these will have developed new roots and can be transplanted later in the spring. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Tuberculosis after contact with domestic cat

Public Health England announced that two people in England have developed tuberculosis after contact with a domestic cat The two human cases are linked to nine cases of Mycobacterium bovis infection in cats in Berkshire and Hampshire last year. Both people were responding to treatment, PHE said, adding that the risk of cat-to-human transmission of M. bovis remained “very low”. M. bovis is the bacterium that causes tuberculosis in cattle, known as bovine TB. Transmission of M. bovis from infected animals to humans can occur by breathing in or ingesting bacteria shed by the animal or through contamination of unprotected cuts in the skin while handling infected animals or their carcasses. The nine cases of M. bovis infection in cats in Berkshire and Hampshire were investigated by PHE and the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) during 2013. Dr Dilys Morgan, head of the gastrointestinal, emerging and zoonotic diseases department at PHE, said: “It’s important to remember that this was a very unusual cluster of TB in domestic cats. “M. bovis is still uncommon in cats - it mainly affects livestock animals.

“These are the first documented cases of cat-to-human transmission, and so although PHE has assessed the risk of people catching this infection from infected cats as being very low, we are recommending that households which have close contacts to cats with confirmed M. bovis infection should be assessed and receive public health advice.” Prof Bertie Squire, professor of clinical tropical medicine at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, said that it was important to put the two unusual cases in perspective. “In 2012, there were 8,130 cases of human tuberculosis in England. In the same year there were only 26 notified cases of M. bovis in England, so M. bovis accounts for less than 0.5% of all human TB cases in the UK. “The real problem of TB in the UK is caused by M. tuberculosis which arises in humans and is transmitted from person to person. If we are to control human TB in the UK then we need to focus on identifying and curing the TB that occurs in humans, and we need to do this much better than we do at present.

All is well in the RAINBOW home camp …………. The animals are well and the garden starts to move as spring finds its way into the year ………… We have had so little rain this year …….. I think I have watered the garden every week ……… newcomers we have a small oasis in the Spanish desert fed by two water wells on the land ! The well levels seem to hold up so even with the reduced rain the water table seems as usual ……………. Mums are fine with Matt in the UK at present looking after Rose amongst other things ……….. He will be back 01 April …………. TV NEWS ………… of course the big story is still the new satellite that transmits our UK TV ……….. all seems to be now settled but we have to accept the signals are far weaker than they were on the old satellite ………… reception will never be as good as it was but at least we can still receive UK TV ……….. Down the coast from Almeria onwards and through Portugal there is no signal to receive so no satellite UK TV ……….. One client did comment that this may have a bearing on house prices here ……….. if you were in the UK looking for a Spanish property and Murcia could get UK TV and Andalusia not that may well influence your decision ……….. Not the be all and end all but perhaps some influence ……….. Local estate agents take note and include “UK TV installed” in a property listing ???? To get reliable UK TV we do again (it was the same 5 years ago with the previous satellite) need the larger dishes ……… we at Rainbow feel the 1.45 Portuguese Prime Focus is the minimum for reliable TV viewing ……….. A 1.80 is ideal. There are lots of 1.35 offsets around the area and these can be made to bring a signal in provided you do not want specific regional variations and you are happy with some pixcellation at times during the day and definitely poor reception in bad weather ……… but they are cheaper !!!! Now more than ever if you are buying a property and you want UK TV get a good TV install company to survey for a dish before you finally buy ………. The huge dishes required can not be mounted on some properties ……….. Don’t be disappointed. Internet TV is a reality now but you do need really good consistent internet ……… Net TV is not like sending an email – where you use the net for a millisecond – TV requires 24/7 always there consistent internet ……….. And that’s not always possible especially in Murcia ! On top of that many NET suppliers do not like you downloading 2+MB/s continuously ……… yes they say they provide you with , say 8MB/S that was for short periods ……… many of them can not cope with that figure continuously. However where you have good internet TV can be really good ……….. We supply a very reasonable package with SPORTS , many channels and a latest MOVIE pack …………….. Ask us for details ……. We have an internet leaflet ……….. Finally some channels news ………… BBC is to close BBC3 …….. Not a channel I watched often but there were some innovative things on there. Channels five is to open “5+24” ………… like the +1’s which run an hour behind the live transmission this will just be a repeat of the day before …………. I suppose another way to catch up on missed viewing if you didn’t see it live , or on +1 , or recorded it , or cant get 5OD ……. Then you will have 5+24 !!!! Will all the other channels follow ??? That’s it for this month …….. Article sponsored by RAINBOW SATELLITES – the company for all you TV needs in the Murcia region of Spain. Contact Alan or Matt for free friendly advise on any TV issue ……… email rainbowsats@ gmail.com or phone (0034) 686358475. Our website www.rainbowsats.org has some good basic information on TV in Spain but it does need an update following the new satellite commission ……… have a read but contact us to discuss ………. We will get the update online soonest,

beauty without surgery with Dr. Helena Benson Helena Benson qualified as a medical doctor at the First Medical Academy in Moscow in 1986. In 1989 Helena came to England. During the 1990’s she worked at Harley Street and from her clinic in North London. She has been practicing natural herbs, iridology and nutrition. In the late 90’s she became involved in medical aesthetics, and now treats patients across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Spain. Helena is the founder of the London School of Permanent Make-up, one of the leading schools in the UK Dr Benson specializes in aesthetic medicine and facial rejuvenation, not requiring cosmetic surgery, or so called ‘lunchtime cosmetics’. Treatments for wrinkles and skin peels can become part of your grooming routine, like going to the hairdresser, doing your nails or even buying new clothes. The best modern cosmetics come in syringes, not jars! Improving your skin or fixing the line may not necessarily fix your life. But wouldn’t it be nice to get back what you thought you might have lost forever? If you can look good and feel great about it, then why not do it? A desire to improve your appearance is not about vanity. It’s about confidence and your self-esteem. And as Oscar Wilde said “It is only shallow people who don’t judge by first impressions”. Helena Benson will be at Cutting Edge, Calle Malaga, Albox on 23rd April. Call 950 633 086 to book your appointment!

SOLTIMES april 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today, I would like to start with an anecdote. My Systems Design Professor at Huddersfield University gave the throng of ‘would-be’ computer genii, a piece of advice when starting to prepare a 10,000 dissertation. “Like a story, It has to have a start, middle and ending. The ending should bring a conclusion to your arguments; The middle section are your arguments and the beginning, being the most important, you have to ask the questions that your will discuss and give your conclusions on”. I wrote it down (sad)! So here is the beginning! Last week, I touched on the subject of ‘torrents’ as part of my raving about “big brother” and little england. Today, I would like to touch on torrents a little more. What is a torrent? How does it work? Why are the biggest of corporations so scared of it? What is a torrent? It can be thought of as a clever method of allowing a file, or group of files, to be downloaded quickly. “So what!” you might say. What if you and 30 other people are downloading a file at exactly the same! In the time it takes you alone to download this program, all 30 people could have downloaded it! This then expands the possibility of sending to many people efficiently (shame royal mail doesn’t work this way :-) ). How does it work? Time for an analogy. You have 4 magic blocks and 4 friends (Joe, James, Jane and Joanne). These block magically double the moment someone wants one, that way, you always have one and your friend gets one. Joe, James, Jane and Joanne ask for blocks 1,2,3 and 4 respectively.

You send block 1 to Joe (he asked first), then block 2 to James and so on with Jane and Joanne. Now Joe has block 1, James – block 2, Jane – block 3 and Joanne – block 4. You can now stop uploading! Joe will send block 1 to James, Jane and Joanne in turn while getting block 2, 3 and 4 from the others. After a short while, everyone has a complete copy of files that you wanted to send. This, obviously, has been simplified a little to help everyone understand. For a short video on torrents and how they work go to: http://player.vimeo.com/ video/15228767 And watch the video. You might be surprised just how simple it really is :-) Why are huge, multinational corporations so afraid of this simple technology? One word – MONEY. They stand to loose massive amounts of profits and decades of uncontrolled rapaciousness motivates them into manipulating anyone / thing that gets between them and profit! Microsoft and its corporate machine, the music and film industries have, after trying to copy-protect their products and being forced by the world courts to remove these protections, used the legal systems to prevent you and I sharing anything, legal or otherwise. Thankfully, the way in which torrent works, we can continue to share, with one another, freely, whatever we choose to share. I believe that torrents will be around for a long time to come or someone forces the courts to upturn their decision in favour of a fairer one. Start (questions), Middle (arguments), Ending (done). See you all at Jack’s bar on Fridays between 12 and 4 for the computer clinic. If you need me sooner, call the number below. Advice is always free :-)

Salad Days

It’s a Leo thing apparently; the trait I have of leaving some things to the last possible minute. At school even with all the holidays to do my homework, it would still be done Sunday night before term started again. At secondary school even though it was a 9am start we weren’t officially late until registration finished at 0925. I guess the leeway was in place in case a school bus ever arrived late. Being the only Catholic school for miles around 90% of the students were coached in from across Surrey. For those that walked to school the system could be played, sometimes I would crawl out of bed at the last possible moment, walk the 15 minutes to school and be there for what I reasoned was ‘in good time’ which was about 0923. The school had the grand title of Saint Peters and Merrow Grange RC Comprehensive, so named as it was 2 schools separated by a 200 yard walk down a quiet lane. Until 1971 the upper school had been a convent school for girls (Merrow Grange) and the lower school a boy’s school (St. Peters). There were extralong breaks between classes as we often had to walk between the two buildings. Merrow Grange was a mock Tudor manor house with a grand wooden staircase and floors

LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT

Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain. 1. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. 2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. 3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. 4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. 5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

that creaked beautifully when trodden on. The school had a good reputation for music and the music teacher Mr Carter had the grandest room of all. It was big enough to use as a recital room, with a vaulted ceiling, balcony and huge leaded bay windows. He must have loved coming to work; I certainly did as he was my form tutor for two years. Students were banned from climbing the tiny circular staircase to the balcony, but if left unsupervised momentarily, we boys would take our chances. The stairs lead further up to the mythical attic where we supposedly would have been expelled if ever caught there. Sadly it was padlocked and I never got in. The Grange also housed a convent with ancient nuns within. As newbies aged 11 and 12 the older boys as a rite of passage scared us with the legend of a ghostly Blue Nun that wandered the attic rooms at night carrying a light. In hindsight ‘Blue Nun’ was also the brand name of a popular wine but we fell for it. Merrow Grange was built in 1868 and one owner was a keen botanist planting Sequoia/ Giant Redwoods and other exotics throughout the then 45 acres gardens. The gardens were landscaped with Pulhamite an artificial stone.

Sunken paths, ponds and artificial hills were created which are now all overgrown. The most interesting part was nicknamed ‘the caves’, again we were strictly forbidden to enter. It’s actually a Grade II listed grotto with a sunken fernery covered by an iron work glazed roof. A winding staircase leads down to a dark tunnel with only one way in/out. When the Pulhamite was mixed 100 years ago something alike to glitter was added and by candle or torchlight the walls shimmer magically. We would jump the school fence at weekends to explore the overgrown gardens and caves, night time made it more adventurous. Once my mate John Fergus went and hid in the tunnel. We searched for him but gave up; we had almost reached the exit when the sod terrified us by screaming ghoulishly from behind us with a torch held under his chin making his face glow red. John had discovered a tiny cave in the roof of the tunnel and had hidden up there whilst we passed underneath. Then Gollum like he clambered down to scare the living daylights out of us – happy days!

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. Please explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for non-payment of capital gains tax.

A . The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain, and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency , the notary will consider you a non resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are in fact a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. The best way to secure tax residency status is making a resident income tax declaration in Spain in June of every year. If you are going to sell shortly,

1. The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over): If you are a resident and sell one property to purchase another of the same or higher price you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax. To benefit you have to have been a resident for at least 3 year before the sale takes place, and you must purchase the next property within 2 years of the sale. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. If the property is owned by a couple and one member is over 65 and the other is not, you are allowed to claim the exemption in respect to half the price. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Andalucia since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid. For a short period of time leading up to 2007 he was also Honorary British Consul.

Eurozone inflation falls to 0.5% in March

Inflation in the euro area fell to 0.5% in March, down from 0.7% in February and its lowest rate since November 2009. The Eurostat estimate puts the inflation rate well below the European Central Bank target of just below 2%. The figure is lower than the 0.6% rate expected by analysts. The lower-than-expected rate may reinforce concerns that the 18-nation eurozone risks a damaging period of deflation. Eurostat’s March’s figure is a “flash” or initial estimate, meaning it could be revised later.

However, it is the sixth consecutive month that the rate of inflation has been below 1%. And analysts believe that the sharp drop in the inflation rate could prompt the European Central Bank (ECB) to take action this Thursday.

‘Unwelcome news’

At its last meeting, which took place earlier this month, the central bank left interest rates on hold at 0.25% and took no new measures to bolster the eurozone’s fragile recovery. However, ECB president Mario Draghi said at the time

French business output grew in March, PMI survey says

France’s private sector companies grew at their fastest pace in two and a half years in March, bucking forecasts for a further contraction, a survey says. The preliminary estimate of Markit’s composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for France was 51.6 in March, up from February’s 47.9 reading and above the 50 level that indicates expansion. It came as business growth in the eurozone slowed slightly last month. The eurozone composite PMI for March was 53.2, just below February’s 53.3. However, the eurozone’s economy has now grown for nine months in a row, according to Markit, and is set to expand by

that the bank could take action should the outlook for the eurozone deteriorate. Analysts have suggested the ECB could cut interest rates even further or buy bonds in a similar manner to the US Federal Reserve. ING economist Martin van Vliet said the lower-thanexpected reading would “fuel talk of further monetary easing by the ECB”. IHS Global Insight economist Howard Archer said the fall in the inflation rate was “uncomfortable and unwelcome news” for the ECB. “If the ECB does eventually act, it will probably include measures aimed at adding liquidity,” he added. Analysts noted the fact that Easter was later than usual had delayed the impact of rising travel and hotel prices and could encourage the ECB to wait before acting. Citigroup economist Guillaume Menuet added: “There’s still a case for easing, but we don’t think there’s going to be enough agreement within the governing council members to ease on Thursday.” On Friday, figures from Spain showed that prices in the country fell 0.2% in March compared with a year earlier.

FOR BUSINESS 0.5% in the first quarter of 2014. The survey also found that employment had increased, albeit slightly, for the second month in a row. “The recovery is gaining traction. One of the particularly encouraging signs policymakers will take from this is that it has broadened out to encompass France,” said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit. Economists had expected French private sector businesses to continue to contract in March. “The surveys suggest that that the eurozone’s recovery is gradually becoming more firmly established,” said Howard Archer, chief European and UK economist at IHS Global Insight.

Foreigners Driving Spain’s Property Turnaround

Foreigners are helping the Spanish property market get back on its feet and last year recorded their largest percentage of the overall sales in the country on record, according to new data from Spain’s General Council of Notaries.

Guides Company. “Unsurprisingly, the Valencian Community, home to the Costa Blanca remains a hot spot, attracting a 17 per cent year-on-year increase in transactions, followed by the Canaries and Andalusia, home to the Costa del Sol.

“The total number of property purchases by non-Spaniards rose by 9.8 per cent in 2013, accounting for 21.4 per cent of the whole market” said Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas

“Reports of increasing interest in Spain from institutional investors, including in commercial property, signify that confidence in the market is back and with Spain expecting a bumper summer

Forgotten Arts

Do you find that some things just disappear without you realising it? I don’t necessarily mean the bar of chocolate that you knew was definitely in the fridge when you looked the day before. No, I was thinking of more weighty matters. When, for example, was the last time you had an actual letter? You know, through the post and with a stamp on it? I’m not talking about those nice electricity bills or income tax demands, but rather letters from friends and relatives. We just don’t seem to get them anymore, instead we get emails, or texts-sorry I should say txts-saying things like...”Soz, 4 gt prty lst nite. Thx”. Incomprehensible, unless you’re 18 and under! While I was thinking about not getting letters anymore, something else dawned on me. Bus Conductors, when did they disappear? People talk about multi tasking being a skill well, consider Bus Conductors. He or she could produce your ticket from a wondrous machine, calculate your change-sometimes it was even right- while balancing perfectly as the driver flew round bends like Lewis Hamilton after too many Smarties! And all this time they’d be whistling continually! Just to go off at a tangent for a second, this gives me an idea for a new game show-Celebrity Clippie! A host of incredibly well known celebrities-okay, ex soap stars, former newsreaders and the odd recovering addict- compete for the title Super Celebrity Clippie, while the bus hurtles around a skid pan. The winner would be the one with the fewest fractures. All of these musings are because of a recent visit to the cinema. It hasn’t half changed and I don’t just mean the seats, which aren’t made of a yucky red valour anymore. The whole experience is different...better, but different. Although on the negative side, all the Usherettes seem to have disappeared. I always looked forward to the interval-they seem to have gone too- when the Usherette came Graham is married round with that tray dangling from a belt around to Helen and has a her neck selling Kia Ora and Mivvis. Seriously Mum What’s an Alpaca? by Alan Parks. “A landscape full of mountainside and valleys, punctuated by pine trees, while in the distance the sea glistening in the sunlight. It seemed so idyllic and perfect. What could be better than a life in the sun with these beautiful animals as companions?” This memoir, the first of two must be about falling in love with a dream that eventually reaches fruition after a lot of hard work and agonising moments. Seriously Mum, What’s A Donkey? is the sequel to this Spanish adventure. Alan Parks was encouraged to write about this new venture-breeding alpacas in Spain, quite a big upheaval from life in the UK to a remote part of Andalucia, the frying pan of Spain because of the summer heat, without the mod-cons that we so depend upon! On the bright side it seemed like a vision of utopia but in reality nerves were often shot to pieces, paranoia set in along with plenty of setbacks and heartaches. The memoir is a frank account of two people who were tempted to abandon a safe but tedious life for a challenging adventure. Alan believed that breeding alpacas could be a profitable business. They were tempted by thoughts of a fantastic lifestyle as well as making pots of money! The animals were bewitching and naturally they fell in

love with them. “If you deal with livestock you have to deal with dead stock too.” Such a sobering thought when you want to breed animals. Alan and partner, Lorna had to contend with aborted cria and dispose of the dead babies. They came to realise that sometimes sick animals don’t make it and this is the gritty reality if you live the dream you have to deal with the nightmare too. The Olive Mill near Montoro was ideal for their needs, in a remote area but with plenty of character and potential. Mary-Belle, the pot-bellied pig came with the house, so to speak and before long there was a motley collection of domesticated as well as feral animals and birds. They acquired 2 Mastin Espanol whose ears had been chopped off and tails wired and a number of chickens. Beyonce and JLo were so named because of their constant bum wiggling. Basil (Fawlty) was the name bestowed on the first cria born that survived. Breeding alpacas in Spain was seen as a pioneering enterprise, innovative and they felt immensely proud. With the arrival of their first 3 alpacas they became instantaneous celebrities with the locals. They tolerated scams and cons with car buying and roof repairs caught out

through their own vulnerability and naivety. It happens. The alpacas were usually friendly but were overly protective of their young and would spit a green bile from the pits of their stomachs, referred to as the most putrid gunk imaginable. “ She really must have dredged up every last bit of it from the pit of all of her stomach. It was enough to make me retch.” Lorna refers to this incident when Alan was gunged Noel Edmond’s style by Bermuda who had a wicked reputation. DIY farming and plumbing as well as administering medication to sick animals, even sleeping in the barn with the animals seem to be prerequisites. And with solar energy, if the sun doesn’t shine for weeks at a time then what happens? Not a lot. No electricity. Water from a well sounds wonderful until the well blocks. What about the rain that turns a stream into a fast flowing river and the leaking roof? Sounds exciting. All part of the fun. There were plenty of regrets but they learnt a lot about themselves before starting to appreciate this crazy country

of Spain and feel stronger and better people. There is humour and warmth as well as sadness and regrets. Publisher: Ant Press. ISBN: 978-148201-1609 Also available on ereader. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.

available every day during the event and which people following ‘the route’ are meant to savour in each bar. Needless to say, there are ‘Ruta de Tapas’ societies who spend the fortnight visiting every bar and savouring every tapas, which sounds like a lot of fun! A panel of judges visits the bars and awards prizes for presentation, harmony of flavours and creativity. Customers can also get involved in the judging as well. Each participating establishment will have a form for clients to fill in and they can win a selection of prizes from free drinks, weekend holiday breaks, restaurant and cinema tickets. Customers will also be asked to vote on the level of service they receive and the bar with the most votes will be presented with a special trophy. And for the first time, voting can be done via facebook and twitter. The winner of the best tapas competition will take part in a Grand Final alongside winners from other towns, to be held in Sevilla in May. The route is divided up into five zones: the city centre with 34 bars, the seafront with 13, the Rambla and Ronda with 12, and the two new zones with 6 bars. The seventh annual ‘Tapas Route’ got underway in Almeria last weekend and the organisers are promising a veritable bonanza for lovers of the unique little snack. ‘More venues, more choices, more prizes and most importantly, more different flavours’, they said at the the press launch of the event. Seventy one bars and restaurants throughout the capitol are participating - which is seventeen more than last year - and two more districts have been added. The event runs until 6th April. It’s a true celebration of the tapas along with the conviviality, hospitality and friendliness which surrounds this wholly Spanish tradition; a tradition which is claimed to have started in Andalucia. Lack Of Bees Causes More Problems For Melon Farmers

Report by Martin Shortland Three weeks ago, I reported that this years melon crop was under attack by the new delhi virus, which last year decimated almost 60% of the regions courgette harvest. The virus is spread by white fly and growers, although warned of the possible threat by seed suppliers, went ahead and began planting at the beginning of the year. Around 20% of the early season crop has been affected and some producers, especially around Vicar where the virus is most prevalent, have taken on extra workers to help inspect and destroy infected plants. As if that isn’t enough, another potentially more damaging threat has now come to light - a shortage of bees. Bees are the most essential components for melon and water melon crops – they pollinate the plants – and this year there is a dramatic scarcity of them. Basically it’s a case of no bees, no melons. And the reason being given by bee keepers is the drought. Although a naturally dry region, this part of Spain has experienced even less rainfall in the last two years than is normal and it is the lack of rain and hence the lack of food provided by plants, which has decimated the bee population. Farmers are frantically looking to rent beehives from other parts

of the country to place in their greenhouses, but the situation seems to be widespread, certainly across the southern part of Spain. Many bee keepers are reporting their hives have been stolen and have asked for police surveillance to protect their livelihoods: not an easy task because of the remote locations of many of the hives. It’s too early to predict a crisis, but farmers are certainly having to cope with not one, but two potentially damaging setbacks to their harvest this season. A growers association spokesman told me on Monday they were doing everything possible to maximise the yield, but he said, “We could be looking at losing as much as 50% of the crop – either through non pollination or white fly – and this will undoubtedly be reflected in the prices customers pay for their fruit this year.” I seem to remember there was a glut of melons last year; my local shop was virtually giving them away for many weeks. The same has happened with this seasons mandarin and orange crops, with very high yields and very low prices. The farmers seem fairly sanguine about it though, which is ultimately a reflection of the ‘swings and roundabouts’ nature of the business.

The Pink Ladies have Soul Power

Friday March 21st saw Maria and the Pink Ladies back in action raising funds for the AECC at the Breakaways bar in Torre de Pichon. A fabulous evening of entertainment was provided by Soul and Motown band SOUL POWER. A total of 730€ was raised on the evening from a raffle and donations but the best part was that everyone had a great evening dancing to all the old soul and motown classics and at the same time raised much needed funds for the AECC´s early detection program.

orange or yellow We possess the standard Spanish wheelbarrow – yellow with green handles and red handgrips, its jolly primary school colours guaranteed to make those mundane garden jobs go with a jaunty step and a merry whistle. Unfortunately this frolicsome picture is spoiled by the wheelbarrow’s Achilles heel – its tyre. The tyre is black, a good counterpoint to the otherwise frenetic colour scheme, but its fatal flaw is that it is pneumatic, thus puncturable. And puncture it did, with increasing regularity. A tyre, once punctured, is never quite the same again, and its predilection for the flat bottom look eventually goaded me into purchasing an unpuncturable tyre in

bright citrus yellow, such as most of our neighbours now own. I went to the Armeria and discovered that there was an option – orange. There on the shelf sat the ubiquitous yellow tyre and next to it sat an equally gaudy, equally solid orange one. I had a choice of 2, which was 1 too many. I umm’d and ahh’d, and settled for the orange one – it was slightly cheaper and it had a metal hub, which I reckoned would deteriorate at a slower rate than the plastic hub of the yellow wheel, plus the added bonus that it would identify my barrow from the herd of yellow wheeled barrows that abound on our estate. Having checked that it was impinchable, a new word taught to me by the young man at the counter, I bore my unique purchase home, proud to be the possessor of the only wheelbarrow in Limaria with an orange wheel. I upended the wheelbarrow on the garden table, so that we josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk could get at it, and with

much sweat, searching for the right size spanner and chasing after dropped nuts Pete and I managed to disconnect the old wheel and connect the new d e f y- a ll - s ha r p - objec t s means of wheelbarrow propulsion to the frame. It was at this point that I discovered why everybody else had gone for the yellow option – the orange wheel is fractionally larger, just large enough to bear on the frame and make the barrow unpushable. I took the wheel back and changed it, coughed up the 4€ extra, fitted the yellow wheel, and can now gaily traverse rock and stone, shale and flint with never a moment’s concern for the rotundity of my wheelbarrow wheel! But had I been satisfied with common knowledge and less penny wise pound foolish, I could have saved myself an extra trip over the mountain – it never crossed my innocent mind that the tyre might not fit!

alqueria The Submersible John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Alqueria’s frontier was again under threat. The Spanish authorities were once more making nuisances of themselves at the border crossings. They had been instructed to make life as difficult as possible for the people of Alqueria. It was all to do with the latest Alquerian rise in the wholesale price of Remitroot or perhaps they had just got into the habit after their Gibraltar experiences. However Alqueria still needed to get its precious Remitroot products to the outside world and into the market place. The solution was obvious, well obvious to the befuddled folk of Alqueria. They would build a submarine to transport Remitroot down the Río Verde and to the open sea. Construction didn’t present too much of a problem, two of iron septic tanks welded together formed the hull. An old washing-machine motor driven via the inverted power of a couple of tractor batteries turned a makeshift propeller. The periscope consisted of a webcam fitted into the rear of a rather convincing imitation Tufted Duck. This meant the duck travelled backwards and its rear end emitted the glow from a red flashing LED but it didn’t seem to raise any awkward questions. The Río Verde was home to some strange creatures. Breathing, which isn’t an optional extra was the next problem. The removal of Alfonso Álvarez from the crew, he virtually lived on chicken vindaloo made the task somewhat easier. A snorkel arrangement was finally contrived, it resembled the smoke stack of Stephenson’s Rocket but fulfilled its function fairly well. The main problem was that of ballast.

The Río Verde is a complex, polluted, slime rich watercourse containing many organisms not known to man. Many of its organisms are so foul that man has no wish to become acquainted with them at all. Its viscosity is greater than that of the thickest motor oil and the stench could turn the stomach of a Port Said sanitary inspector. To keep the craft submerged large concrete blocks had to be suspended from the hull. The blocks were purloined from the town hall in a neighbouring village which spectacularly collapsed two days later. The theory was to release the blocks as the craft entered the Mediterranean. The water would be less buoyant and the craft would float gently to the surface. This was the theory, what happened in practice was another matter however. When the concrete blocks were released the submarine shot up through the water like a ballistic missile and then some three metres into the air. A passing giant squid of the male gender took it to be a frisky female and acted accordingly. We will never know the full trauma of this encounter only that the crew never ate calamari again. Manuela alone was unscathed and seemed to enjoy the experience she immediately volunteered for the next trip.

viewpoint

Suspect Soapy Stories I have a friend – no really I do – who has a pet hate regarding a certain recurring detail in television soaps. It’s an aversion that borders on hysteria at times and as a talented actress herself, she gets the screaming meemies every time she has to witness yet another scene featuring what she sees as an unprofessional gaffe. So what could it possibly be that has her climbing the walls in abject disgust? I’ll tell you. It’s when actors are supposedly indulging in a nice cup of Rosie Lee or coffee, and it becomes blatantly obvious that there is absolutely nothing in the damn cup, leaving the actors to swallow the non-existent beverage with a phony wobble of the Adams apple and an equally counterfeit smacking of the lips. And I agree with her. No expense seems to be spared in the production of these programmes – elaborate sets and whole streets built, with actors being paid staggering salaries – and yet they can’t be bothered to actually fill a mug with genuine Sainsbury’s Red Label. I also have issues with some of the story lines which can range from highly unlikely scenarios to the ‘You have got to be having a laugh!’ efforts. In my expert opinion, Emmerdale is the biggest offender here, although I have to hold my hands up and say that this soap along with Corrie, are the only two such programmes I watch. The former

By Colin Bird :

badbirdnow@gmail.com

because it happens to be on when I am preparing yet another gastronomic delight for my lovely lady, and the latter because frankly I like it. So there. My only excuse is that I am of a certain age and drive a Peugeot. Emmerdale has a strange team of writers, because the story lines range from the absolutely brilliant – although these are in the small minority - to manifestly, incontrovertibly and totally bonkers. They are certainly not keen observers of people behaviour or human nature, because I am constantly yelling at the screen things like: “Don’t be stupid – nobody would do/say that! Or: ‘Go on, hit the beggar, he’s asked for it!’ And when a half respectable plot does show its face, it is milked to within an inch of its life until everyone is bored totally senseless with the whole thing. Story lines that begin at Easter can still be running the following spring – like one of those London Marathon runners who wears a suit of real armour or goes dressed as an aircraft carrier, and who is still trudging painfully along when everyone else has gone home or sloped off to the pub. But just as my friend has her personal bugbear with the phantom tea, I have one with folded arms. That’s right . . . just check out how many times and in how many scenes, female characters automatically fold their arms when having a conversation with someone. It’s as if they not sure what to do with their hands and so they play safe and adopt this boring posture. Yes it’s a fairly common girlie pose, but not the twenty odd times we see in each episode. ‘Where’s the director?’ I shout in exasperation. ‘Why aren’t you telling her to move her upper

body and show a bit of life you imbecile!’ This would not be tolerated in theatre I can tell you. Then you have the actors who are supposed to be skilled tradesmen or professionals but who have obviously never been given even the scantiest of instruction on how to come across as genuine and who handle a spanner like it is a Curly Wurly or the controller at the taxi company who has the telephone manner of a cabbage. I tell you, any mini cab company that receives the number of calls that Street Cars gets – about one booking every two episodes – would have been up the swanee years ago. It’s a joke. And don’t get me started about those machinists at Underworld! Why aren’t the actors concerned given a day out from rehearsals to show them a real working garage or a busy taxi cab office or made to work in a bustling restaurant for a couple of evenings. And this is where my own dear lady’s pet hate comes in. As a professional hairdresser all of her life, she is either laughing insanely or banging the coffee table in frustration at the antics with brushes and hair dryers by the so called stylists at Audrey’s Salon in the Street. On such a high profile soap, why the hell haven’t these actors been given a couple of days coaching on the basics of hairdressing and at least shown how to shampoo properly or which way up to hold a comb. But hey, guess what we’ll be doing again this week.

ITV ORIHUELA AT THE DOUBLE AGAIN

ITV Orihuela played their last home game of the season for the cadetes and B team against Murcia XV on Saturday, as the first team had already finished their season. First up were the cadetes looking to finish on a high at home with one game to go. In true spirit of the game Orihuela RFC played eleven a-side to make things even. It started off quite even with both teams playing attacking rugby and some excellent defensive work by Murcia XV, but Jorge saw the gap in the defence to skip round the defence for the first try of the game, with Gregory getting the extras. With Murcia XV battling hard, the pressure was beginning to show with two more quick tries and Jorge getting his second of the match. Then you could say it became the Gregory show after good work by the players around him he was able before half time to capitalise on lose ball to get a hat-trick of tries as well as the conversions to go in at half time 40-0 up. The relentless pressure

attitude of the Murcia XV team, and congratulations to a job well done by Pedro, the coach, and the players. Next up was the B team against a very good and strong Murcia XV team with lots of experience, who decide the best ploy was not to let the home side get up a head of steam and kept them on the back foot from the off. T h e y were not getting their own way as Orihuela R F C w e r e dominate in the scrum, but from a lineout Murcia XV controlled the maul and broke away near the line to go over for the first try of the game. With the game going from end to end, from a scrum after another knock on Orihuela RFC got the ball out wide for Chema to to over in the corner after some great link up play by the players. The home side went in

With mistakes been made by both teams and some silly penalties as well it was a clearance kick that Sergio collected and took on the defence breaking through a few tackles and excellent hands and support by the players for Tirso to go over under the posts and Alvaro to get the extras and give some breathing space for a very tense last few minutes. With time ticking away and one last attack of the game the home side attacked the Murcia XV defence again and got the ball out wide to Jaime to be driven over for the all important try bonus point to give ITV Orihuela a

fantastic 22-7 win. Murcia XV came with a very strong team, which was always going to be difficult to beat, but Orihuela RFC players dug deep and pulled out all the stops to get this fantastic victory. All credit must also go to Murcia XV for their part in the game, which was played in the great spirit of rugby. Next up is Cartagena away for both the cadetes and B team on 26 April. I am now at Zoco Market on Sundays third row up from the road at the back of the market, so come on down there for all of your rugby branded clothing, and anything you want to know about rugby in the area.

continued in the second half with tries coming thick and fast and in the end 14 tries and 11 conversion were scored without reply bringing the final score 92-0 to ITV Orihuela RFC cadetes. All credit must go to the never say die

7-5 down and with both teams having everything to play for and some great rugby being played by both teams it was another line breaking run by Tirso and great support from Edu to go over to take the lead. RAF Brize N o r t o n 227 for 9 To r r e v i e j a CC 135 all out

It was agreed the RAF should bat first and Torrevieja soon regretted the decision as the RAF reached 100 in only the 19th over. Opening bat Mike Bloor retired after scoring 65 but came back in at the end to finish with 88 not out.

Mazarron 2 CD Alberca 1 On a lovely sunny afternoon Mazarron eventually won a somewhat hectic and at times frantic game against CD Alberca by two goals to one to make it two wins from three games for new coach Javi. In the first half hour very little of note happened except for a shot from Tico which went narrowly wide following good work by Jose Ruben, and of course the almost inevitable yellow card for Tico! In the 5 minutes before half time, however, Jose Ruben should have given Mazarron the lead but his mis-hit shot went straight to the keeper. At the other end Marcos made a fine save to keep Alberca out but from the corner Alcaraz was harshly judged to have handled the ball. Beltran made no mistake from the penalty kick to give the visitors the lead at half time. Mazarron had the ball in the net twice in the opening

stages of the second half but both Tolo and Ruben had their efforts ruled out for offside. However in the 60th minute justice was done when following a spell of pin ball wizardry in the 6 yard box it seemed that Dani eventually forced the ball home to make the score 1-1. However, it appears that the goal was officially given to Tolo taking his tally for the season to 20. Mazarron took a deserved lead in the 70th minute when Alcaraz fed Tolo on the right and his cross was put away at the second time of asking by an unmarked Jose

Ruben. In the closing minutes Mazarron had three more clear cut chances to increase their lead where it seemed easier to score than miss, but miss they did. Firstly by Ruben following good work from Juanillo, then by Juanillo when put through by Chema and finally by Tolo when played in by Jose Ruben. Team; Marcos, Gilberto, Juan Andreo, Alcaraz, Dani, Adrian (Chema),Tico, Moha, Randry (Cecilio), Jose Ruben,Tolo (Juanillo). Man of Andreo

CD Montesinos v Montesinos Todo Deporte The Montesinos derby had all the expectations of a vast goal fest but this was not to be, the blue side of the town were determined to keep the reds of CD at bay, and their plan worked, CD became frustrated as their immense pressure and possession didn’t penetrate a stubborn TD side, who have conceded over 100 goals, and have no points to show for, so really this was an embarrassing result for CD. A crowd of over 200 saw missed chances which resulted in no communication and lack of confidence. Missed chances in the 1st half went to PAREDES whose shot was saved by TD keeper then OROUKER & DARIO went close. With leading CD scorer VAZ rested, EDU was on his own and he went close Ably supported by Thomas (26) and Jay (24) with four other batsmen reaching double figures, the RAF reached 227 for 9 off their allotted 40 overs. Pick of the Torrevieja bowlers were Ciaran Guichard ( 2 for 29 ) and Lee Brown ( 2 for 42 ). Torrevieja got off to a slow start to their innings,

on 40 min’s. Juanpe sent on RODRIGO for DARIO but still CD couldn’t break down the resiliant TD defence. H/T 0-0.

The screaming from the CD dressing room at half time could’ve been heard in Quesada as Juanpe clearly vented his anger at his team. The 2nd half was yet again all CD. ANGEL headed over EDU went close his shot saved, then the game came to life. TD no 2 fouled DIEGO in the box and his 2nd yellow saw him sent off and MARCOS who just came on for DANI coolly converted the spot kick, 1-0. OMAR soon went close but shot wide, then CD got their 2nd penalty when ORUOKER was tripped in area.

Captain RUBEN who vented his disgust, and JUANPE duly subbed RORIGO for JUAN CARLOS. The reds saw the game out easily and had numerous chances to increase the lead but the TD no9 nearly became Robin Hood late on and only a MANU tackle saved a total embarrassment. Full time CD MONTESINOS 1 TD MONTESINOS 0. Next week CD MONTESINOS are away to SPORTING ORIHUELA K.O To be confirmed. For more info contact website www. cdmontesinos.com or email thefullmonte2011@ hotmail.com

RODRIGO tried a cheeky kick which went over the bar much to the amazement of fans and and after 10 overs were 10 for 2. Only Lee Brown ( not out 47 ) and Kieren Wood (20) troubled the RAF bowlers, with Loughran finishing with 4 overs 3 wkts for 11 runs. Cheverton (2 for 7 ) and Thomas ( 2 for 3 ) restricted Torrevieja to 135 all out. The

match,

although

competitive, was played in a friendly manner and it is hoped to repeat the fixture next year if not sooner. Anyone who wishes to join Torrevieja CC as player or in an administrative roll should e-mail torreviejacricket@live.com. or colingriffiths80@yahoo. com.

TMGS Match Report

LOCAL BOXER MAKES HISTORY On the 4thof April 2014 in the Pabellon Cecilio Gallego (The Blue Pavilion in the sports centre) in Torrevieja, there will be a night of boxing which will include 8 amateur international bouts with boxers from the United Kingdom, Spain and Norway. These will include a heavyweight bout, and will feature as the main bout of the evening, the Torrevieja fighter, Emiliano Casal, who has a professional record of 18 victories and two defeats.

26th March 2014.

On this day in history back in 1934, driving tests are introduced in Britain under the Road Traffic Act and the wind at Font Del Llop hit 76kmh for our final round of the Captain’s Stableford. It has been 6 months since we visited this “Jewel in the Mountains” of Font De Llop golf course and to be honest, many wished they’d had not visited today. Not because of the course, that was in very good condition even though they were spiking the fairways, it was the wind that ruined the day for many, most if not all. Many didn’t see the funny side of hitting a ball with a club that gets you 130 yards to see it actually come back to you and land 50 yards away. Putting was also an absolute nightmare and there were many “naughty” words heard when the wind took the ball or stopped it some 5 or 6 yards past the hole. John Eyre didn’t see the funny side of the wind either, he now knows the old saying of “You can’t “wotist” into the wind” He didn’t find it funny that his “wotsit” came straight back at him and wet his glasses. No they weren’t in his hand at the time, they were on his face, so you can guess the strength of the wind.

It was suggested that the scores should be omitted from this report, but the Scribe was never too good at taking orders and so the Silver Division top 3 were John Hillier (the Flying 5 iron man) taking 3rd place with 26 points, losing out on the countback system to Bill Starkey (who also claimed the only “2”) and the overall winner of the Silver crew was Roger (hyggeligmann) Nilsen with 27 points.

Shelia Dean, Sandra (Again) Twentyman and Captain Mick Kennedy. Photo: This week’s Nearest the Pin winners.

The Gold Division didn’t fare much better really and it only needed 19 points from Alan Rixson to claim 3rd place. Steve Higgins took 2nd spot with 25 points and this left GerdCromm’s quite excellent 32 points to take the bacon.

Our next game, Wednesday 2 April 2014 see’s us at the “marmite” course of Las Ramblas and this is followed by our Club Championship Medal Play match at La Finca the following week, 9th April 2014.If you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

All 4 NTP’s were claimed and a sleeve of TMGS balls went to GerdCromm,

Fairwayz Golf Society. Today Fairwayz Golf Society played at Vistabella, the course was in superb condition, especially the greens, and the format was individual Stableford. The weather was very kind to us for most of the day, but the cloud and wind came over towards the end of the game. It was a good turn out, with 28 players who were determined to score better than last week on our annual trip to Benidorm. Some reasonable scores were posted.

Longest drive B.Wood. 2 ball - Alex Duchart. Well done to all our winners today. Our next game on April 3rd is at Alenda, 1st tee time is at 10am. The next Society game is at Bonalba on 10th April, 1st tee time is 10am. Please be at the courses 1 hour prior to 1st tee time.

beyond our control, we have now changed our name, and moved our venue to Cafe Uno, based in Catral. We shall now be known as the Cafe Uno Golf Society.

Notice to all members. As from this week, we will no longer be called Fairwayz Golf Society. Due to circumstances

Thanks to Fairwayz and their hospitality for the past years, we wish them well in their new venture. Our website and other administration will be updated in due course. Thanks, Steve Lawrence

The Best Guest award went to Mrs J Leunissen with 20 points. To close, we must applaud and say a big “Thank You” the Font Del Llop Golf course for their very generous offer of a free game before August for those that attended today.

MATCH REPORT

SATURDAY, 29TH MARCH 2014 CD ALMORADI 1 v. DAYA NUEVA CF 0 Cadets Alicante 2A ALMORADI’S SUPERIOR SECOND HALF DISPLAY WINS IT FOR THEM On a cool evening under floodlights the home side started the better, playing quick neat football but did not really threaten the Daya defence. As the half wore on Daya came more into the game and following a corner on 15 minutes the Almoradi keeper had to make a smart save. With both teams now committed to attacking, it was end to end football. The visitors had a couple of good chances on 20 minutes but the keeper was up to the task. Then it was the home side who had a couple of chances which the visitors capably dealt with. The first half came to a close with no goals to show for all the attacking that both sides had produced. Almoradi

This will be an exciting and unique experience for Torrevieja as Emiliano, the current Spanish National Champion, has not boxed in his home town since 2007. Since that time, Emiliano has won the Transcontinental title at Super Lightweight in 2009 with a victory over Sento Martinez. Emiliano also went on to become the Hispanic Champion at Welterweight with a 2nd round stoppage over Venezuelan boxer, Jose de Jesus Lopez. started the second half as they had the first and forced a couple of corners. Then on 50 minutes Danni in the Daya goal was called on to make two very good saves as Almoradi threatened to take control of the match. Minutes later Danni again came to the rescue turning a goal bound shot around the post. It was all Almoradi now and surely they must score soon ? The post rescued Daya on 58 minutes with Danni well beaten. Danni made a superb save on 65 minutes from a free kick only for the loose ball to be lashed home for 1 - 0 to the home side who thoroughly deserved their lead. Just a minute later the ball was again in the back of Daya’s net but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Danni. Daya had a good chance on 78 minutes but Marcos who was on for the injured Luis saw his shot go wide and that was just about it, there were no further goals. It had been a disappointing second half by Daya following the promise of their first half efforts. The good sized crowd was treated to a very entertaining match that was played in a sporting manner. The referee had a good game and kept the play flowing at all times. Man of the Match was Danni for Daya.Daya Dave Team Sponsor: Segurlab

In 2012, Emiliano Casal went on to win the Spanish title at lightweight with a TKO in the 2nd round against Felix Soria from the Balearic Islands. The 28 year old Soria announced his retirement from professional boxing after that fight. In 2013, in front of 3,000 partisan fans in Gijon (Asturias), Casal defeated local fighter Alejandro Rodriguez Pereira with a 7th round knockout to claim a second Spanish National title. Emiliano is the first Professional boxer from Torrevieja to claim a National title and now, this coming FRIDAY 4th APRIL, he hopes to continue re-writing history when he takes on Juan Carlos Lopez, known as “King Daluz”. The Canary Island boxer comes into this fight unbeaten in his 10 professional bouts. He is an ex-member of the Spanish Olympic squad and held the Spanish title at Junior level. Tickets for the evening are on sale at the SPORTIN gymnasium

sport (Crevillente Road) and from PIZZERIA EL GATO in La Zenia. Prices are 10 euro if bought before the evening of the event or 15 euro on the door. Ringside tickets are also on sale at 25 euro, whilst VIP tickets, at 50 euro each, will also include a catering service on the night. Anybody with a ticket to this event will also be able to attend the post fight party at the local night club, LOVE. It is important to show your ticket to gain entry to the post fight event. We would strongly advice to purchase your tickets in advance as the Pavilion has a limited capacity and expectation is running high in and around Torrevieja to witness this historic evening of boxing. SHARKS GET THEIR BITE BACK! After several weeks of many key players missing through injury and two consecutive defeats by their main rivals for the League 2 Championship, Los Squalos visited Totana, keen to get their promotion ambitions back on course. Travelling with a full complement of 23 fit players and with a game plan to run the heavy, well drilled opposition pack around the field, Squalos set about their task using quick ball from the breakdowns to feed their faster and more experienced backline to stretch the Totana defence time and again. The plan worked well with Squalos up for it right from the whistle and were 14 – 0 up within eighteen minutes. Totana showed the steady progress they have been making this season and were not prepared to be intimidated. Despite going further behind they converted a try of their own in the first half but it was to be their only score of the game. The half ended with Los Squalos leading by 28 points to 7. The second half started very much like the first, with Squalos using very

quick moves to punish any mistakes from the already tired Totana defence. Though Totana kept trying, they had no answer to the fast flowing and free scoring Sharks. In total Squalos scored 10 try’s, 7 of which were converted making the final score Totana 7 Los Squalos 64 Well done to South African fullback, Daniel, who scored 3 tries (I hope he got the beers in!). Try of the match must surely belong to flanker, Juanma, who caught the ball from a kick off, then sprinted through the Totana defence to score under the posts. The next time he caught it, he passed it straight away - a lesson learnt! Totana battled to the end but on the day were unfortunate to meet a full strength Squalos side full of energy and invention. Squalos’ next game is at home in the “Shark Tank” against Yecla on Saturday, 05 April, kick off at 1700hrs. Come along to the Polideportivo in San Javier (near Iceland) on Saturday and support your local rugby team!

lost the most balls to the water were John Dunnion, Ann Hobbs, Brian Airey and T Webb. The winners of the nearest the Pins were David McSweeney, Paul Flanagan and Sheila McSweeney.

Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday, the Society played a Texas Scramble at La Serena. There was a good turnout for a course the society has not played for a number of years. The players were warned to put a few extra golf-balls in their bags as they would more than likely lose a few more than usual given that there is “water” on 16 of the 18 holes on the course.

made playing conditions challenging. It seemed that on almost all the holes the wind was in your face and Par 4’s became Par 5’s. Many balls disappeared into the wet stuff. Nevertheless most of the players enjoyed the day. The winning team was Brian Smith, Paul Flanagan and Eddie Scott with a very creditable Gross score of 2 over par.

The course, in general, was in good condition and the greens were in excellent condition. The sun was out but unfortunately the wind was up to with a very strong cold almost gale force wind swirling around throughout the day which

In second place was the team of Victor Dew, Ted Hooker and Dave Winchcombe. In third place was the team of John King, Les Lindores, Keith Armstrong and Sheila McSweeney. The team who played the most shots and presumably

The presentations were made at the Societies base, the Quesada Country Club after the game. A tasty hot & cold buffet was provided by Dave and Anita for which the Society is as always very grateful. The next game is an individual stableford at the course on our doorstep, which the Society has never played before, La Marquesa. There is a members meeting at the Quesada Country Club on Tuesday 1 April. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723. in 2 weeks time at Alenda. ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY ALICANTE GOLF – 25th MARCH 2014 We took the trip to this inner city lovely Seve designed course, complete with his trait of 6 Par 3’s, 6 Par 4’s and 6 Par 5’s, the 9th is his signature Hole complete with an “S” shaped pond, the course itself is in good condition but welcome a lot of rain, glad to say we did not have it today (How selfish are we??). The sun was shining but again we had a wind took its toll, which restricted the scoring. Oddly the wind kept changing direction so you never knew whether it would be an advantage or disadvantage, With the exception of the top 6 positions scoring was low because of this wind RESULTS GOLD CATEGORY 1st Ivie Davies 33 pts 2nd Les Yates 32 pts 3rd Geoff Poyner 31 pts

SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY WINDY WEDNESDAY AT LA FINCA.

Capt Steve Davis & Paul Cobain.

The winds that had been whipping up through the previous night brought unplayable conditions to La Finca on the wild Wednesday morning.

Ever increasing numbers at this busy time of the year has warranted 5 prizes in each division. The bronze category’s winners were Norman McBride in 5th (29), John Parker in 4th (30 C/B), Chris Hamblett in 3rd (30 C/B), Ray Ewins in 2nd (33) & Keith Stevenson in top spot with 35.

With our tee times not starting until nearly 1pm there was a glimmer of hope that the continuous, strong wind which swept across the course all morning might have blown itself out. It soon, however, became plainly obvious that the conditions were changing....but for the worse! It became more & more difficult to keep your footing and balls were frequently being moved by the powerful gusts. On one particular windswept hole, a good iron player in our group managed to strike the ball very well with his 6 iron into the wind - including very little roll it travelled all of 110 metres.

Top Photo: Gold Category: Geoff Poyner – Les Yates – Ivie Davies Below photo Silver Category: Mick Hithersay – Ron Rocket – Ron Chambers

The Gold division saw Shay Cunningham in 5th (29 C/B), John Osborne in 4th (29 C/B), Barry Roehrig in 3rd (31), Ivan Hanak in 2nd (33) & top of the shop went to Colin Rust with 35. Three

With a very good score on the day of 30 hard earned points, Jim Starbuck deservedly picked up the visitor’s prize. Don’t forget to log onto www.smgs.org to keep up to date with all society matters or simply give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 to get info on forthcoming Wednesday meetings.

It was definitely more a day for staying indoors and playing dominoes!! NTP’s on the par 3’s were awarded to Ivan Hanak (Hole 3), John Trehy (Hole 6), Phil de Lacy (Hole 13) & Brian Staines (Hole 16). NTP’s in 3 shots on three of the par 4’s went to Darren Hancock,

Some of the happy SMGS winners.

Silver’s rewards went to John Aitchison in 5th (29), Capt Steve Davis in 4th (31 C/B), Phil de Lacy in 3rd (31 C/B), Alan MacDonald in 2nd (31 C/ B) & Mike Jordan took top slot with 32.

matchplay games also took place in the very unfriendly conditions resulting in Darren Hancock just managing to eliminate Phil de Lacy 1 up, Los Shankers (Mike Jordan & Norman Padmore) beat Scouse & Spouse (Phil & Marg Birtwistle) 4+2 - I think the wind helped straighten their shanks! The final game saw the Roadrunners (Keith Stevenson & Norman McBride) successfully march on after overcoming Beejays (John Parker & Brian Staines).

Wednesday 26th March 2014OH MY GOODNESS What was all that wind about ??? Well 23 players turned out for our outing at Alenda Golf, it was 23 as I decided I would take part myself after 4 months out. Ever had that feeling “I wish I hadn’t of done that” ? well I had !! In the field of 23 players only 3 managed to hit the 30 points barrier, well done Helen Kinsella 34 pts, Tony Wilson 32 pts and (Steady 4 shanks) Willie Buchanan 30 pts. My mere 16 points I thought was embarrassing but I did have an excuse in my back pocket (I did not want the most golf title) however, back at base when receiving the cards good old Jim Gaw took

that title a w a y together with a further 4 p l ay e r s below 16 points Happy D a y s !!! Even s o m e of the

seasoned players didn’t manage to break 20 points or if they did it was JUST !!! I must say it has to be the windiest golf outing we have ever experienced. Nevertheless an enjoyable day ????????
