News Avoid leaving the renewal of your British passport until the last minute
British nationals wanting to renew or obtain a British passport should avoid leaving their applications too late. You currently need to allow at least six weeks for a passport renewal and eight weeks for a first time application, according to Her Majesty’s Passport Office. It’s also important to get your application right first time, to avoid the paperwork being returned and causing further delay. The Passport Office took over the processing of all applications from British nationals across the globe in March. As part of the transition, the British Embassy in Madrid ceased to handle applications last year. Overseas applications are now subject to further security checks, to align with the processes for domestic passport applications. These checks can take significantly longer than those made in the UK and a passport will not be issued until all checks have
been satisfactorily completed.
Processing times have therefore increased for UK passport applications submitted from overseas. The Passport Office has acknowledged the frustration that customers may be experiencing and will continue to review its guidance on estimated processing times. It has recommended that customers do not book travel until they have received their passport. UK passport applications must be made online and the webpage to start an overseas application can be found here: https://www. gov.uk/overseas-passports/y . The six week minimum for the issue of a new passport starts when the application is received by the Passport Office. So if you need a new British passport soon, don’t leave it until the last minute. You can make your application up to nine m o n t h s before the expiry of your current passport and the remaining validity time will be carried over to the new passport. Source: www.fco.gov.uk

With Solar installations currently being fitted from Mazzaron to Denia, complying with the current registration process, the company is going from strength to strength. “Unfortunately, there are several companies trading at the moment, making bogus claims to potential customers in order to achieve a sale. If you would like genuine and informative advice, a bespoke system designed for YOUR needs, installed correctly first time and then legally registered by our Solar Registered Engineers, then visit our new offices, visit our website or just give us a call.” The rapidly growing Renewable Energy company also supplys and installs many new innovative Solar products, from vertical wall mounted ultra slim panels to the latest in hot water and pool systems. If you are interested in Solar, then contact Sunlife Solar Solutions, they will have the Solution for you.
Last walk of the season saw 21 people meet at the Oasis Restaurant in Bolnuevo for a pre-walk coffee and wee. Twenty walkers set off led by Joan. The walk went west along the coast following the wide track to the “Roman Quay” and passed the nudists (it was a warm day), around and back an inland track. Much to the walkers delight, Jon who had not walked due to an Achilles tendon problem but had nipped out to Lydl for cheap cava and juice, met them at an area that had been going to be developed in the past** with mature palm trees, level ground and a water reservoir. After a welcome cup or two of bubbles, the walk continued up the hill giving great views of the Bahia de Mazarrón before finishing. It was a short hop to Rincon de Elias restaurant on the Bolnuevo paseo for lunch. The meal
was the usual good food and cost just 10€. The next walk will be in September or October. There are “Summer Lunch” dates so that people can keep in touch. The dates are on the web site at www. bolnuevo.com, click Humanists, or call Jon on 968 15 84 68 for more information about Humanist activities and the Humanist Celebrant. ** The area had been developed by a successful bullfighter called Zacarias Valentina Banderas Goroza. Born in Ronda in 1932, he made his first public appearance as a bullfighter in 1948 and in the glittering career, Zacarias met over 1000 bulls. Unfortunately Zavarias was killed in 1968 when a No. 21 bus knocked him down on the Puerta de Sol in Madrid and his ashes were scattered on the land that he had hoped to develop near Bolnuevo.

Sunshine and less tax – Why life abroad suits retirees
ort
It’s not just guaranteed sunshine that makes living abroad an attractive proposition to British retirees, following a report that showed that the average retired household in the UK forks out 30 per cent of its annual income to the taxman. Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas Guides Company said: “More frustrating is that most of that tax is indirect, or not means-related, in the form of VAT and excise on things such as petrol and alcohol, which together add up to 18 per cent. Meanwhile, income tax swallows up 8 per cent of income in a retired household and

council tax accounts for 4 per cent. “Considering that council tax and taxes on life’s little luxuries are considerably less in typical European expat hotspots, such as Spain, France and Portugal, than in the UK, relocating could make financial sense for many retiring Brits. “Careful pension planning, including making use of off-shore pension vehicles, could bring down an expat’s income tax too, putting more money in their pockets to enjoy their life in the sun.”

Harvest Your Herbs Your herb garden is looking fabulous, so how can you preserve them for use in the kitchen all year round?
Air drying herbs is not only the easiest and least expensive way to dry fresh herbs, but this slow drying process also doesn’t deplete the herbs of their oils. This process works best with herbs that don’t have high moisture content, like Bay, Dill, Marjoram, Oregano, Rosemary and Thyme. Moisture dense herbs, like Basil, Chives, Mint, Tarragon preserve better in a dehydrator, or try freezing them. Only use a microwave or oven to dry herbs as a last resort as these actually cook the herbs to a degree, diminishing the oil content and flavour.
haven’t had a chance to flower. But non-hardy herbs will start to decline as the weather cools, so late summer is a good time to begin drying your herbs. Cut in mid-morning Pick before the plants are wilting in the afternoon sun.
How To Dry Herbs...
Cut healthy branches from your herb plants. Remove any dry or diseased leaves Shake gently to remove and insects. If necessary, rinse with
cool water and pat well dry with paper towels. Wet herbs will mould and rot. Remove the lower leaves along the bottom inch or so of the branch. Bundle 4 - 6 branches together and tie as a bunch. You can use string or a rubber band. The bundles will shrink as they dry and the rubber band will loosen, so check periodically they the bundle is not slipping. Make small bundles if you are trying to dry herbs with high water content.
Storing & Using Your Dried Herbs...
When To Harvest...
Harvest before flowering If you’ve been harvesting all season, your plants probably

Punch or cut several holes in a paper bag. Label the bag with the name of the herb you are drying. Place the herb bundle upside down into the bag. Gather the ends of the bag around the bundle and tie closed. Make sure the herbs are not crowded inside the bag. Hand the bag upside down in a warm, airy room. Check in about two weeks to see how things are progressing. Keep checking weekly until your herbs are dry and ready to store.

Store your dried herbs in air tight containers; zip closing bags will do or use small canning jars. Be sure to label and date your containers. Your herbs will retain more flavour is you store the leaves hole and crush them when you are ready to use them. Discard any dried herbs that show the slightest sign of mould. Place containers in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Dried herbs are best used within a year. As your herbs loose their colour, they are also loosing their flavour. Use about 1 teaspoon crumbled dried leaves in place of a tablespoon of fresh.

t a e d r o o G G l e k e o F Lo Is your Life out of Balance? Positive or Negative Stress?
This is a very good question, life’s Balance are you In or Out? There are different types of In-balances …… Let’s explore them for a while. Too much Stress Not enough Stress Too much Exercise Not enough Exercise Too much Overindulgence of Food/Alcohol Starving yourself /To Deny yourself a Treat Too much Work Not enough Work You can see the pattern …… Life is unfortunately “Out of Balance” at times and our “Harmony” goes out the window. But life is life on Life’s terms …… it’s rarely plain sailing. I used to get pulled up by my councillor who said, “Debbie you keep saying that life is unfair,” …… “Well get used to it because it is sometimes but it’s how we deal with it that counts.” My Life is out of Balance and you ask why come to you for help Debbie? Well we all lead different lifestyles, what pleases one person won’t please the next. The hand you are dealt in life sometimes you have no choice but to be Out of Balance, but the question Is are we ever truly In Balance & Harmony? And what can we do if we are not? Well there is always help if we choose to seek it. When we cannot cope and our lives become unmanageable it Is best to deal with things promptly by ignoring the issues usually things just manifest to bigger problems later down the line. Believe me when I say I let my self pride get in the way and lived with problems in denial they just got worse never better. When we have a catalogue of problems saving them up only makes the problems look worse than they are and it seems daunting trying to tackle them all at once. We need Prioritise and deal with them one at a time. Ever tried to eat an Elephant all in one go? You can a bite at a time. Remember what is one person’s trauma is not another’s and that is what makes us individual so this is a personal thing to us. We can get advice and help from others but if the problem is more serious always seek professional advice and often by joining a support network/group you will be amazed by the benefits of talking to real people with similar problems who actually understand what your going through whether it is a medical condition such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s or Bereavement then it’s better to be able to share experiences finding out how to cope and the additional things that help that you that you won’t always get advice or help from your GP concerning issues

that surround you. So “Action” is the key word and a favourite one of mine “Willingness”. By not being willing nothing happens, it is only just thoughts in your head. The action is the doing bit but you have to be willing first. When I said that my life is “out of balance” I meant that I do not have a “standard balanced life”. I do not divide my life into equal areas and I am not trying to do it all at the same time. I some days just get by and others have a “better balance” but my work and social life dictates this to me to a degree. Let me tell you what life balance is to me. Life balance is inner peace and happiness, finding contentment. Life balance is the understanding that my life is full and yet I have plenty of room to bring something new into it. Life balance is a happy family that I can plan to be with even when I know I live in Spain and there home is the Uk. I know I can keep in touch via Skype or Facebook, but I also need to jump on a plane and go visit or hope they would visit me.. It’s not ideal but I strive to balance it the best I can. Life is about Change & Choice …… Problems versus Solutions …… so much to explore in life are we living it to the full or enduring it? “Life balance” is unbalanced and that is what makes it Life …… it is to me taking care of my body without forgetting my soul …… one of which my spiritual program supports. Each and every one of us has the choice to support this as we see fit. “Life balance” is walking outside and seeing the beauty around me that inspires me day after day, and having daily gratitude for what I have and not for what I don’t. “Life balance” for the special people in my life, who keep me grounded and balanced. “Life balance” for those of you I can help and for those of you I cannot. For those I pass onto to other fellow colleagues with the appropriate help they can give. “Life balance” knows I am not perfect but to accept the things in life I cannot change and those that I can change …… and having the wisdom to know the difference between the two that I can change. “Life balance” is having faith; I put my faith into something invisible called “My Higher Power” and believe in the unbelievable and small miracles happen all the time even when I am asleep and then Big miracles happen and I think I am still dreaming! Miracles in life happen every second of the day to all of us if we take the time to look at Nature it is a Miracle some good and some bad these are the things we cannot control, but it is life’s balance.

“Life balance” knows that I do not live on the edge and that I feel secure walking through my life, and putting people around me that support that. This is what “life balance” is for me. It is not some mathematical equation that I must follow in life. It is a life of passion, love, kindness, generosity, happiness and joy …… and I have gratitude in my life, I have people to share that with. What is life balance for you? Why not join me each week and let’s look at balance together, what it means to us and how we can make our lives more fruitful and enjoyable for ourselves and others …… Let’s explore, it’s fun!!! Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. This week someone contacted me about a new and virulent malware that encrypts your files and demands money to unlock them. It is called “GameOver Zeus”. This is an extremely sophisticated type of malware designed specifically to steal banking and other credentials from the computers it infects and is also known as a POS (piece of s...)! It comes in 2 parts. The malware which infects your machine and the encryption program that does the damage. How do you know if you have it? There are some “tell-tale” signs that will help you spot it. These are: Your computer is working slowly, not just a little slower but really slowly; Your cursor bounces around the screen without any help from you; Is someone accessing your bank account and it isn’t you; your files are locked and won’t be accessible; and the most obvious, you get a ransom demand to pay XXX€ in so many days. How do you get this on your computer in the first place? Simple! You invite it onto your machine! Have you opened a strange email or gone to a web address without asking for this information? Then you may well have been duped into downloading and allowing them onto your machine and duped is the operative word because without knowing it, they have manipulated you into doing this, so don’t be hard on yourself – it really wasn’t your fault! The good news is that you have a little over a week to prepare for this. If you have: 1. made a system backup of your working system onto a memory chip(s) / cd(s) / dvd(s) and 2. Made a regular backup of your files / pictures / documents / music /
videos. Then you are fully prepared for what will come. If you are one of the lucky few who have a “factory reset” option, then all you need to have is a copy of your important information backed up on an external device and you’re prepared for what is to come! The latest news (as this has taken 2 days to research and write) is that the original malware has been identified and can be removed before the data of document encryption takes place. To-date, no-one has been able to crack the encryption so if you haven’t made a back-up of your documents then you will have to accept that they are gone! After some extensive searching on the internet I have a program that will scan and clean the original malware from your machine. If you come to me and have it cleaned you will have to change your passwords as they could have been read and sold on! The general advice about security still holds strong. 1. Have a good, well known, Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware program installed. Make sure that the Anti-Virus is up-to-date and working! Keep your computer up-to-date with the updates appropriate to your system. Run your Anti-Malware weekly for the next month to ensure that you remain free from any problems. Trev’s First rule of computer security “Make as difficult as possible to get to or into your computer and computer files”. NOTHING is 100% safe but making it really difficult for a prospective attacker will put them off before they get in! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! If you would like a clinic nearer to you – make the suggestion using the email address under this article and we will see what can be done.
For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT
contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially presummer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. I am a lingerie retailer and I want to pass on to you my experience of how to obtain the best possible fitting bra for you. I read and hear so many stories of women who are badly misled about how they should go about choosing a bra size. Many stores, even quality branded chain stores have settled on one method which is universally applied. Usually this involves putting a measure just underneath the breasts and then measuring again over the highest point of the breasts. This is a good method (there are others) and most of the time, if done properly by an experienced person, is quite accurate. I think you’re beginning to get an idea where this is going now... One problem is making sure that the first measurement is done as closely underneath the breast tissue as possible. Even a small distance below can yield a half or even a whole cup size. Secondly, although this method is a very good one on the whole, it doesn’t cater for different breast shapes or even body shapes. Unfortunately girls, we are not all the same. This is one of the major reasons that buying online is often so unsatisfactory unless you are buying a bra model and size you have purchased before. Next we need to factor in that different manufacturers have their own views on what a bra band and cup size is. I wish I had a Euro for every time someone has come into my store saying I am a size (whatever). I often offer to measure them anyway if they are a new customer and find out they are a completely different size and or cup. I am then told that the measurement must be wrong and despite the fact that the bra I have suggested fits the customer perfectly they walk away with the size they originally wanted despite the fact that it either looks wrong or feels uncomfortable or both. My experience has shown me that whilst using a tape measure is a good place to start it is only half the story. You really need to try on a new bra if either you haven’t been measured for a while or it is a new brand. Now, provided you are not wearing a padded bra or thick clothing it’s normally fine to measure and fit over the top of your clothing. Expect that you might have to try on several bras and styles to get your best fit bra. Some customers expect that the first bra they try on will meet all their wildest hopes and expectations, and walk out the door confident that none of the bras in the store will fit them, when all they needed to do was communicate with the fitting room attendant about their needs. You cannot tell me too much, or show me too much for that matter. You had a tumor removed from one breast? You’ve had a mastectomy and use a prosthetic? You have scoliosis? You have to comfortably accommodate your TENS unit for

your back pain? You’re nursing or pregnant? It’s difficult for you to reach the middle of your back? Your breasts are sensitive? Whatever the case, it’s my job to help you find a bra that fits you best and accommodates your needs. I cannot know your needs unless you tell me. You should expect that your bra fitter will ask what you are currently wearing, and listen to what you want in your next bra. I should select several sizes and styles for you. Your bra fitter should teach you how a bra should fit, helping you find a bra shape that suits your breasts best, and provide washing and wearing tips. I’ll also (surprise!) be looking at you wearing a bra and checking the fit for you. Most importantly of all- Don’t simply rely on what size you used to buy or try to fit into what you would like to be. It’s not worth it. You’ll be uncomfortable and you won’t look good anyway. So there you go ladies. Go and get yourself professionally measured by someone with the experience and knowledge to help you choose the right fitting bra for you. And don’t forget to wear thin clothing and a normal (not padded) bra. Following these rules you should get your size right first time most times. You don’t need to have a model like figure to look good in a bra. You can look fabulous in an attractive bra that is fitted properly to the body you have! Here at Shani’s Lingerie we offer a free bra fitting service and although we cannot guarantee a successful seduction we can help you with attractive bras that also feel comfortable. We also have a large range of cup and strap sizes in different models. Many of these also come in several different colours. If you want a fitting you might want to come early or call to make an appointment so that we can make sure we can give you all the time you need to ensure a comfortable fit. We also have an excellent exchange policy. Just bring back the items with tags attached. We also have a measuring and fitting service on site which will ensure you get the right fit in the first place. Directions: Proceed in to Zoco Market. Turn left immediately and go to the very end where you will see the Iron Art stall. Turn right and we are the 2nd stall on the right.

The Overseas Guides Company’s annual Overseas Living Price Index shows that living in Europe may not be as cheap as you would think, as prices rise in key expat destinations, such as France. The Figures Using our research, the Overseas Guides Company has put together a detailed comparison index, outlining the difference between grocery shopping in the UK and our most popular destinations. As you can see in the table below, whilst prices in the UK are still cheaper for some essential grocery items, such as bananas or dog food, but on the whole, you will get much more for your money elsewhere. Turkey tops the poll as best value overall Turkey consistently ranks as one of the cheapest countries within which to live, with low utility costs and low prices for everyday items compared to the rest of the world – particularly bread, milk and washing powder. Public transport costs are also lower in Turkey. Rising costs in France The rising costs of utility bills in France has pushed up the day-to-day living costs in the country – now slightly ahead of the UK, thanks to high electricity and gas prices. Despite this, a food shop will generally cost you less in France, although you will pay slightly higher prices for some basic items, such as milk and pasta. Leisure time Portugal comes out of our survey as the cheapest country to eat out in. Beer is
also priced the cheapest here, along with Italy. Wine, on the other hand, is cheapest in Italy and Cyprus. Getting out and about The cost of petrol is generally cheaper throughout most of Europe, although petrol prices in Italy can be high. Diesel was found to be cheaper than petrol in every country surveyed, aside from the UK. Beyond Europe Your weekly shop is likely to cost you more if you live in Canada and New Zealand – prices here are higher even than in the UK, although in New Zealand this is countered by relatively low utility bills, including free water rates. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Canada and the US also have the most expensive bar costs for alcohol – even more so than in the UK! In contrast, getting around by car is much cheaper in Canada than in the US or the UK, while public transport costs are highest in Canada and New Zealand. It is evident that the costs of living can vary widely in each country, depending on your needs, and need to be taken into consideration when considering a move abroad. As Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of the Overseas Guides Company, points out: ‘Our research emphasises how important it is to have a clear idea of costs in your new country before moving there, so you know you can easily afford day-to-day living costs, whatever your financial situation.’ Source: smartcurrencyexchange.com

Meanwhile, income tax swallows up 8 per cent of income in a retired household and council tax accounts for 4 per

Report reveals businesses are still facing challenges to growth A recent Europe-wide business survey suggests late payments are putting additional pressure on Spanish businesses, with 80 per cent claiming late payments are severely impacting liquidity. The problem appears to be universal across Europe, with 55 per cent of businesses reporting late payments resulting in loss of income, 63 per cent claiming additional pressures on liquidity, and 50 per cent citing late payments as having a direct impact on company growth. However, the situation appears to be particularly acute in Spain, where 69 per cent of businesses claim late payments have resulted in a direct loss of income, with average bad-debt losses of 2.9 per cent. And while payment delays in the private sector appear to be better in Spain than in Europe as a whole, public sector businesses, it would appear, are delaying payments
by up to 79 days. Ricardo García-Nieto Conde, partner at Russell Bedford Barcelona member firm ASEPYME / GNL Auditores, attributes this to the wider problems afflicting Spain’s public sector, and he does not expect any improvement to the situation in the short term. “It is hard to overestimate the impact current austerity policies have had on those businesses reliant on the public sector. There comes a point at which businesses have to evaluate the impact of public-sector clients on their on-going cash-flow situation, and their longer-term viability. There are signs of improvement, however. At PIMEC (Catalonia’s leading SME organisation) we have been lobbying for new legislation to ensure penalties for late payment are enforced through the appropriate channels. We are hopeful that this may be adopted by the end of this year.”

Night Music by Jojo Moyes
“There was nothing gentle about grief. It launched itself at you like a rogue wave on the seafront, flooding you, threatening to pull you under.” This is Moyes’ sixth book. She has an unusual Christian name doesn’t she? Her parents were artists and named her after a famous Beatles’ song. But I’m sure you probably knew that! The two main female characters are strong and tough although we see their vulnerabilities and plenty of tears. They are meant to be very different, one more Mother Earth, typically a home-maker, the other a professional musician who has chosen a career before her husband and family. Do they have anything in common? The Spanish house and betrayal by the men they loved. After a lot of soulsearching and intensity they both have second chances. Isabel moves on at an alarming rate unlike Laura who relished the opportunity to be loved by a faithful and honest man only to be drawn back to her pathetic, unfaithful wreck of a husband. Laura McCarthy is a wonderful woman, late thirties, handsome, lean and agile. She had been married to Matt for 18 years. Her mother had disapproved of the marriage. She had warned Laura that he was unsuitable and Laura had invested a lot of money into the marriage to enable them to buy property and land. She loved Matt in spite of his flings. They had a level-headed and decent boy called Anthony who disliked his father’s lies and philandering. Laura had been looking after Samuel Frederick Pottisworth for 9 years,
running after him and cooking for him. He was a despicable man who leered and made suggestive comments about her clothes and figure. He had promised the McCarthys his Spanish house when he died to show his gratitude and this kept Laura and Matt going. Matt had already had plans drawn up concerning renovation and extensions. As for Laura she had mentally dressed the windows and recovered every inch of the floor. She knew exactly how the house would look when it was hers. Being able to move into this grand house would be enough to show her parents that she had made the right decision in marrying Matt. Everything would be okay. An unexpected stroke of luck meant that Pottisworth died sooner than later. At his funeral, just as the McCarthys were celebrating their good fortune, the solicitor, Derek Wendell drops the bombshell-the old man had not made a will and there was one remaining relative who would inherit the house. Laura’s world seem to fall away “ like the segment of an orange.” Isabel Delancey was a professional violinist, in fact she had worked her way up to become lead violinist in the City Symphonia. Music had been her obsession and had taken priority to boys, marriage and families. Whilst trying to establish her career at the age of 20 she had unexpectedly fallen in love with a French man 12 years her senior, recently divorced. Like Laura, her parents disapproved. Even the vicar made remarks about the number of mistresses she would have to tolerate. You’ll understand the irony
braben’s blog... Le Platform Blues Ken Dodd used to tell a joke about someone who thought ham grew on an ambush! It’s funny isn’t it how art, if we can call Ken Dodd’s jokes art that is, can eventually end up as real life. QVC, the shopping channeldoes that stand for Quality Varies Considerably I wonder-have recently conducted a survey and found out that one in ten children under 10 think chocolate comes from a bush too and that’s not just Roses! In the same gardening related survey, that body of wise old QVC owls discovered that a frighteningly large percentage of children under 16 didn’t have too clear an idea of what exactly a trowel is. Now the cynic in me is starting to suspect that the people behind this supposed survey are trying to create a market for the gardening tools that have fallen off a wheelbarrow in their vicinity, because surely people can’t be so clueless. But then again, maybe they can! Take the French for example. Not the whole nation, just a small but influential collection of them. Recently they were planning to upgrade their trains. An excellent idea, but of course, doing this isn’t cheap and takes time to carefully design the new trains and then
to finally build them. Sounds simple, but of course, in the true fashion of staying true to our ability to find mind blowingly wonderful ways of getting things wrong, these French railway experts didn’t let us down. The trains look great as they whizz majestically through the countryside at speeds that suggest that the people who built them know exactly what it takes to run a tip top train service. Which they do, as long as this service doesn’t involve unexpected things like, say, stopping at a station to pick up passengers. If it does, then there’s a problem. The trains they designed and then built for a monstrous amount of money are too big. I don’t mean too big in a, “we’ll never find enough people to fill these monsters,” sort of way. That would be almost understandable. No, they’ve messed up in a much more expansive, and expensive, way! They’re too wide for many stations, so picking up passengers is, well, impossible! I think we can smile smugly today on three counts; we know where chocolate comes from, we can successfully recognise a trowel at 20 paces and we don’t design trains!
Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk
of this remark once you read the book. Impulsively she married and became pregnant after her honeymoon. Kitty was born then later, Thierry. She wasn’t cut out to be a mother and persuaded Laurent to employ Mary as a nanny, cook and general housewife. This released her from the guilt and pressures of domesticity so that she could travel to Europe and play. Laurent had died suddenly in a car crash more than 9 months ago and Mr Cartwright, her solicitor informed her that her late husband had had debts and that downsizing might be the only option. Or perhaps she would sell her precious violin? Isabel’s choice? Sell the house and break her children’s heart or sell her violin and break her own? Not easy. Kitty was now 15 and Thierry 8. They had had a privileged lifestyle, having had every affordable luxury possible. That was going to change. Isabel felt a sense of amputation as she tried to blot out the encroaching grief. Mountains of bills, unopened letters gathered dust. Her grief was so consuming she couldn’t deal with practical matters. Kitty opened one of the letters and thought someone was playing a joke on them. She told her mother that someone had left Isabel a house! Would this solve Isabel’s financial difficulty or would it create more heartache? The house was in Norfolk. Isabel had fond memories of visiting this glorious place when she attended a garden party as a child. She did not know the history behind that house particularly

1.For the coq au vin, preheat the oven to 220C/430F/Gas 7. Arrange the chicken pieces in a large roasting tin and scatter with the bacon, shallots, thyme, rosemary and chilli flakes. Season, to taste, with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2.Drizzle the contents of the roasting tray with two tablespoons of the olive oil and roast in the oven for 20 minutes. 3.When the chicken has been roasted, add the wine to the tin and cook for another 20-25 minutes. Remove from the oven. 4.Heat the butter and remaining tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. When the butter is foaming, add the mushrooms and
garlic and fry for 3-5 minutes. Tip the mushrooms and garlic into the tin and scatter with the parsley. 5.Meanwhile, for the crème fraîche mash, boil the potatoes in a pan of salted water until tender. Remove from the heat, drain well and return to the hot pan. 6.Mash the potatoes until smooth. 7.Heat the milk and butter in a small pan over a medium heat, until the butter has melted (do not allow the mixture to boil). Beat the hot butter and milk into the potatoes, then fold in the crème fraîche or cream. Season, to taste, with sea salt. 8.To serve, pile some of the crème fraîche mash onto each of four serving plates and spoon the coq au vin on top

Our generation has seen an explosion in technological capability greater, I believe, than any previous generation every aspect of our lives has been touched by our new-found mastery of the world about us. Our daily lives are witness to the headlong rush of progress that was the 20th century. From the invention of the Snooze button on our alarm clock, which so gently eases us into wakefulness like a welltrained valet, to the capability of doing the week’s shopping without ever leaving the comfort of our own home, or the need of a pocketful of cash, right up to when we sink gratefully into our memory foam mattresses and pull the tog-rated duvet up
Homage
around our shoulders. I remember the farthing – I remember when you could buy things with a farthing – but you had to have that farthing clutched in your juvenile grasp when the transaction, probably for an aniseed ball, took place. There was no credit card facility, unless that is what you called your mother! In those days, 60+ years ago, I considered that life was good. As far as I was concerned, the world was at peace, and the conveniences that I now take for granted were only the glimmerings of a far-fetched idea in the brains of boffins, or the wildly unbelievable and lurid stories in comics. I had no inkling of how the meteoric progress of technology would alter my everyday life, and so I was content. Now, watching the coverage of the First World War Commemorations, all of us are brought back to memories of our own earlier days. Whether those memories be good or bad, they were different; the world was josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

different. But were the people different? I hope not. As I watch the Commemoration coverage from my bought new from the shop sofa, with my cup of tea made with water boiled from an electric kettle with automatic cut-off and poured onto to a one-cup teabag, I like to believe that the extraordinary bravery and resilience, the patriotism, the ingenuity and the sheer determination of spirit that these bent but not bowed veterans displayed, both then and now, could be replicated by the present generation, should the need arise. This is the last great collective moment of glory for these homegrown heroes. We, who call ourselves British, should salute them, for they fought so that we should have freedom – the freedom to live the life of our choosing; to bask in the warmth of a foreign sun. Let us use their gift gratefully, wisely and well.
alqueria La Casa Maribel, the menu John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
La Casa Maribel was the brainchild of Maribel Buenanosh, a restaurant which would put Alqueria firmly on the culinary map. It would serve exclusively Alquerian home grown food, the only restaurant to do so. There is of course a reason for this, Alquerian food is foul to say the least. No other restaurant would touch the stuff on taste grounds alone without even considering the health implications. To be fair to the Señora Buenanosh she had lost the use of her taste buds. She failed to follow the instructions with her new electric tongue scraper and paid the price. It is difficult to categorise Alquerian cuisine, it’s certainly unique and not for the faint hearted. Meat dishes prepared from creatures relatively high up the evolutionary scale are scarce. These animals have a certain amount of intelligence and have therefore legged it out of the Pueblo long ago. The Alquerian Lemming is still to be found in the Village which is probably why it has such a propensity for hurling itself from high places. The pick of the menu would be as follows. Lemmings are small and preparing them can be complicated. After they have flung themselves off convenient cliffs they are even smaller or at least more compact. Skewering and cooking over charcoal is the preferred Alquerian method. It is imperative to make sure the Lemming
isn’t conscious prior to skewering, the surprised look is offputting to the diner. They’ll have enough to contend with when they taste the ‘delicacy’. Maribel had to include the singular Alquerian Truffle, not as sought after as the Motovun Forest variety but they are distinctive. Black with variable blue markings they have a pungent aroma slightly reminiscent of the drainage problems associated with Egyptian port towns. A top French chef described them as having the consistency of Balsa Wood and the taste of hydrocortisone skin cream. The only source of fish is the stinking green slime of the Río Verde and the only edible fish is the Alquerian Trout. Distinguished from other trout by large dilated eyes and a confused expression they need careful preparation. Nestor Clacketo ate one only partially cooked and had the most terrible side-effects. He was in such a state of mental disorientation he joined the British Tory Party. The pick of the deserts has to be the traditional Alqueria Pudding. The basis is Remitroot, but pulped into a dough, not unlike suet. The puddings can contain a variety of fillings. Because the dough is an aggressive aphrodisiac, very few are completely consumed. It is advisable to check with one’s doctor before eating. It might also be polite to check with one’s partner as well. How will the invited connoisseurs react? We will see on opening day.

viewpoint
It’s a Small World for Close Friends To use the modern vernacular and not to put too fine a point on it - we are totally Japanese lacquered. Our week of eating, drinking and partying with our old Bermuda buddies has come to an end. We have just about managed to remove the suspect stains from the carpets; the not inconsiderable numbers of empty wine bottles have been taken for recycling, and both of us now intend to embark on a period of what amounts to serious detoxification (both bodily and emotionally) and the resumption of normal dietary habits. As with their arrivals, each of our friends departed at varying times spread over five days. Some were simply returning home to England which involved flights lasting a little over two hours, but the majority flew out to either Madrid or London for connecting flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Florida, Nova Scotia, Dubai and Bermuda. With the sad farewells at each departure, we were reminded of the contrast in emotions to a week or so earlier when they had arrived. I am not ashamed to say that in every case, the excitement as they exited the baggage hall into the arrival lounge was something usually associated with kids on Christmas morning. Onlookers would have assumed that the exuberant greetings and the prolonged

huggings were between long lost relatives, but then that would be a natural mistake to make because we do regard ourselves as all part of the same close knit family. When Jane and Sandra saw each other in the reception area of the hotel for the first time in five years, such was their tearful reunion that they eventually had to be prised apart with tyre irons. And when I said my own goodbyes to my closest friend Douglas at Alicante airport and we had emerged from the brotherly farewell hug, he had not walked half a dozen paces towards the terminal when he dropped his case and came back for a second helping. It gets more and more difficult after each reunion. But this is all part and parcel of life when friends are separated by continents and thousands of miles; it’s the quality of time spent together in between that really matters. And every minute of those few days was lived to the full, and mostly consisted of the sound of laughter and unashamed pleasure at being in each other’s presence once again. As always at these reunions, the intervening forty years simply slipped away and we fell comfortably and instantly back into each other’s company. Literally hundreds of photos were taken collectively, many of which have already found their way onto the internet with many more yet to come. We all congratulated each other on looking marvellous and not a day older than when we last met. A certain amount of false optimism, wishful thinking and downright lying there perhaps, but on reviewing some of the pics, I reckon that we have done pretty darn well considering the sheer volume of
bus passes and creaky joints that we possess between us. And energy was not in short supply either, with some of the girls (I use the term advisedly) deciding to join the dancers on the floor at Zenia Beach Hotel and proceeding to let it all hang out in just about every sense of the term, which included the lovely Angela falling over theatrically during a line dance session. She just did not seem to grasp the concept that it is normally assumed that line dancing is carried out in a more or less straight line. But we’ve got a good video out of it. These events do not really require intricate planning – they take care of themselves – but the restaurants that my lovely missus and I chose for our evening dining pleasure were all first class and we were looked after brilliantly well. From our affable host Miron at the excellent Indigo Indian restaurant, to our friend Ah Wei in our favourite Oriental establishment Old Asia, who organised things beautifully for us. And to the staff at Chapter One, Carpe Diem (the latter being a new restaurant and therefore a discovery for us) Sunrise and Che’s who made our evenings such a great experience. All situated in La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Zenia Boulevard, bringing it home to us just how lucky and spoilt we are for choice in this area. And where to next time? It may be only two years away, but that’s beginning to sound like a very long time indeed when you are of a certain age. Florida, the island of Santorini and a New York – Bermuda cruise are all suggestions on the table. We will just have to wait and see, but the planning is all part of the fun.

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY
We arrived at Bonalba for an extra fixture in the calendar which was well supported by members and guests bearing in mind it had only been a week since the last match.Despite rumours to the contrary, the course was in good condition, except for the bunkers, which would be improved by the addition of loose sand rather than compacted sand. A bonus for the day was achieved by the rounds being completed in 4 hours which must be a record in Society Golf. We welcomed 2 new guests to the Society,Lynn Young and Terry Stevenson. Nearest the Pin winners were Jimmy Scott, Aidan Byrne and two for our
visiting ex-handicap secretary Barry Gribble who will be taking his golf balls back to Torquay shortly. Gold Winner was Alan Craig on countback with 31 pts and Silver winner was Carol Marriner on countback with 29pts. Many thanks once again to Helena at the La Marina Club for providing the after match food. Our next meeting is at Lo Romero on 19th June ,first tee-time 10a.m. On 20th June we shall be holding our annual Midsummer Dance. The cost is 15 Euros for a choice of 3 courses and wine . 20 members turned out today Thursday 5th June for our society game at Alicante golf club. The format was Stableford, along with some members playing their match play knock out games as well. TMGS
TMGS Match Report for La Marquesa 4th June 2014. Today was a new venue for the Society and by heck, what a deal we had where the members and guests paid 40 € (50 € with buggy) which included a meal. I must say that the meal for many was the highlight and even those who surpassed their handicaps also were in full praise of the meal. I will go one stage further and say the meal was absolutely excellent and worth far more than we paid. Okay, golf time. The course has been much maligned in the past but it must be said that the work they have done and are continuing to do is paying dividends and the course was in excellent condition. The greens were as slow though and some say as slow as Colin Marsden running the 20 yard dash. Yes, they were that slow but hey, it is that time of the year when the greens are hollow tined; sadly too many expect perfect greens every week. Only two of the four NTP’s were won and it was a family affair with John and Audry Mellor taking Gold and Silver pins and won a sleeve of TMGS logo Srixon Soft Feels. There was in fact a tie between John Mellor and Steve McGuiness and it was
decided to award them bothwith a sleeve. Scores on the doors were fairly decent and the Best Visitor - Chris Belman only needed 29 points to claim that winners slot. The Silver mob enjoyed their day and the Mellors framed again with Audrey taking 4th spot with 27 points. 2nd and 3rd places were tied with 30 points and unfortunately Colin Marsden was pushed back into 3rd by the Belfast Bandit, Ernie wilson who bitched and moaned about the course being too tight; most men like it tight, Ernie must be different. The winner of the Silver crowd was George Chapman with 31 points. The Gold lads fared better again and it needed a 31 countback for Alan Rickers to claim 4th and 3 points ahead in 3rd was Steve McGuiness on 34 points. He was 3 behind the runner-up John Mellor on 34 points and he, in turn, was 3 points behind the top scorer of the day, the Yorkshire Mafioso, Bill Starkey on 38 points. Enjoy the cut to your handicap Billy. Next week see’s us at La Finca and if you fancy a game, take a look at our wesite, www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 661524101.

mrmotor@mail.com Mazarron’s disappointing season ended with a 20 away defeat to fourth placed Soho.Medi. Mazarron were only able to name 11 players in their squad which included five players from the juvenile and cadete ranks. However, they made and spurned a number of chances during the game and the result could have been much closer. Jose Ruben shot over the bar after an excellent cross by Dani early on but Soho.Medi took the lead almost immediately afterwards. A long through ball found Jorge Martinez who beat three Mazarron defenders far too easily before giving young Pablo no chance in the Mazarron goal. After 15 minutes Ruben was fouled on the edge of the Soho. Medi penalty area but Tolo’s free kick was well saved by former Mazrron keeper, Jose Iker. From the resulting corner Cecilio should have equalised with a header from just a few yards out. Mazarron were on top at this point but Soho. Medi made it 2-0 before the interval when another
long ball saw Pablo bring down the home striker in the area and a penalty kick was awarded. Pablo, who was just returning from suspension, fortunately only received a yellow card. Soho.Medi keeper Jose Iker took the spot kick and, despite the best efforts of Pablo, the ball squirmed over the line. Soho.Medi were happy to hang on to their lead in the second half and Mazarron were able to carve out only a handful of chances. Juanillo’s cross was headed over the bar by Jose Ruben and Cecilio missed another excellent chance in the dying stages when he placed his header wide of the post when it seemed easier to score. Mazarron’s defeat saw them finish a season which had promised so much in 12th place with a feeling of underachievement. Team: Pablo, Fran, Cecilio, Ismai, Dani, Alfonso, Domingo. Gines, Juanillo.
