Stacey Mowle Appeal Fundraising

Inspired by the bravery of a young girl, Stacey Mowle, a Tottenham Hotspur supporter who – five years ago – was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma (a very virulent and aggressive form of cancer) members of Spurs Supporters Spain have started raising money to assist the appeal in her name to get her to the USA for the treatment she so badly needs. The Stacey Mowle Appeal needs to raise around half a million pounds and is already backed by the likes of former Spurs player Graham Roberts who is the Fundraising Ambassador for the Appeal, as well as numerous well known celebrities such as TV star Linda Robson, comedian Joe Pasquale, Embarrassing Bodies Doctor Pixie McKenna and many others. Events have been staged across many counties in southern England including sponsored walks, runs, cycle rides, golf days and even skydives and abseils, as well as comedy nights and a procelebrity football match and now they are being staged here in southern Spain. The first fundraising event by Spurs Supporters Spain was a variation on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge held at the end of August at Moores Bar and which raised 120 euros with eight club members accepting the challenge. The next will cover the whole month of October and is again based on another cancer campaign – Go Sober

for October – with club Secretary Graeme Clark agreeing to go through the entire month without drinking any alcohol. Plans for November are already well advanced with a Legends Evening starring Graham Roberts and Stephen Sedgley to be staged jointly at Moores Bar and Marinasol restaurant in Cabo Roig on Saturday 15th November. In addition, supporters of other football clubs have now come forward asking if they can take part in an event and have offered their assistance so the club is now organising a MowVember Challenge. This entails entrants not shaving for the whole of November and growing a beard or a moustache. Supporters of Liverpool, Newcastle, West Ham and Stoke have already agreed so Spurs Supporters Spain need supporters of all other Premier League clubs and as many from other leagues, even other countries, to come forward to take part. Providing you are living on the southern Costa Blanca or surrounding areas you are eligible to take part. For more information on any of these events – if you want to donate or would like to participate – check out the website www.spurssupportersspain. com or contact Graeme Clark on 966 764 403 (office hours 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday). Alternatively pop into Moores Bar on Cabo Roig and have a word with Martin.

Shark attacks boy on Spanish beach Witnesses reported that the boy was bitten by a blue shark, a common Mediterranean species. Photo: Wikimedia Commons/Mark Conlin/NMFS A 16-year-old boy playing in the sea at the popular Catalan tourist town of Salou this month needed thirty stitches after being bitten on the hand by a shark. Witnesses could not positively identify the species that attacked the boy but some described it as a blue shark (Prionace glauca), a wide-ranging species common in the Mediterranean Sea. Salou town hall expressed its regret over the incident which it described as “isolated” according to Catalan daily La Vanguardia. The boy was in the area on holiday with his family from the northerly

Spanish region of Aragon. He was reported to have been playing with an inflatable mattress in shallow water when he was bitten on the right hand. Fast-moving, highly migratory blue sharks usually eat fish although they are known to sometimes go after larger prey. The sharks, which can weigh up to 80kg (175 pounds), can become aggressive if they feel threatened but rarely attack humans. As of 2013, blue sharks had only ever been implicated in 13 attacks upon humans, four of which ended fatally. Source: www.thelocal.es

French telecom giant Orange on Monday made a €3.4-billion offer ($4.4 billion) to acquire Spanish fixedline operator Jazztel.

If the acquisition goes ahead, Orange expects synergies worth €1.3 billion from the deal, which would create Spain’s second-largest fixed broadband carrier and third-largest mobile network operator. The offer, expected to be presented to Jazztel shareholders on Tuesday, would mark the latest consolidation in the Spanish telecoms market and “bring together the two most dynamic players in the sector” with “a real potential for growth”, Orange boss Stephane Richard said in a statement.

Orange’s bid comes after Vodafone agreed to buy Spanish cable firm Ono for €7.2 billion earlier this year. The European Commission gave that acquisition the green light in July, judging that Vodafone’s mobile telecoms activities were largely complementary with Ono’s fixed-line services. Source: www.thelocal.es

Orange, formally known as France Telecom, said it would offer Jazztel shareholders 13 euros per share, 34 percent above the average closing

Reach Out helps 35 families with essential items like food, hygiene products and cleaning items as well as clothing and help with school materials. ABOUT REACH OUT Reach Out currently helps around 80 local homeless men and women and 35 families in poverty. The homeless people are offered a breakfast and lunch at the charity’s drop in centre from a charity kitchen. The homeless people are also offered the opportunity to have a shower, have their clothes washed and dried and are given food and basic provisions. Often, their own clothing is in bad condition or unsuitable for living and sleeping rough so Reach Out also provides good second hand clothing for the homeless. Karolina said, “We try to restore some of the dignity they may have lost through becoming homeless. Something as simple as a hot meal and a shower, a change of underwear and clean clothes can make such a difference to a person who has nothing and nobody to turn to.” In winter, and on cold spring nights, this also includes vital supplies of warm clothing and blankets. Some of those with drug or alcohol issues are offered help and in the past, some have even been placed in rehabilitation by the charity. For the families, Reach Out carefully assesses each family group’s needs and carries out a home visit to learn more about each family’s situation. Karolina explained, “We only have capacity to help around 35 families as we want to do more than simply give them a food hamper and say goodbye. We try to help them get back on their feet again. We help with school supplies for the children, with clothing, books, bags and pencils. Each of our families has an allowance for our second hand shops so they can come and get clothing or shoes. We also run a solidarity supermarket and our families come in two groups, once per week and can choose essential items with vouchers we issue to them. We give away in excess of €400 every week in food and other essentials alone. By giving them a choice, we can better meet their needs – some will need food for their children, others might need toilet paper – we allow them to choose for themselves and give them

back some dignity.” Reach Out is always grateful of donations of food, clean clothing and The charity also needs furniture. donations of money and is keen to hear from any club, association, individual or business who would be willing to hold a fundraiser on the charity’s behalf. Car donated to raise funds for K9

As many of you have been aware K9 had been donated a beautiful Daewoo Matiz to sell so as to raise funds for all the animals in our care. The car was well priced and was comparable to the others of the same make which were being advertised . Well, within 30 minutes of going live K9 were inundated with interested buyers. Needless to say the vehicle was sold very quickly much to the disappointment of those who missed out. K9 raised 1,300 euros for the sale and would like to say a tremendous thank you to Pia.

A cave in Spain containing some of the world’s most precious prehistoric art will stay open for trial visits after decades closed for conservation reasons. Experts who launched small trial viewings in February at the Altamira cave to see whether the ancient paintings could withstand the breath and germs of visitors have now decided to extend them, the culture ministry said. Renowned for its 14,000-year-old paintings of red bison, the cave closed in 2002 for fear that moisture and microscopic fungi introduced by visitors would ruin the prehistoric paint. This year’s trial visits of small groups showed “no relation of cause and effect between the presence of researchers and visitors... and the loss of pigment”, the ministry said in a statement. Experts have now decided to continue

Spain’s prehistoric cave art open to lucky few letting five visitors per week into the cave until next February in order to monitor the effect on the ancient masterpieces over a year, it said. The highlight of the cave is a set of paintings, at least 14,000 years old, of red and yellow bison plus horses, deer, humans with the heads of animals and mysterious symbols. UNESCO listed the paintings as a World Heritage Site in 1985, describing them as “masterpieces of creative genius and... humanity’s earliest accomplished art”. The cave was discovered in 1868 at Santillana del Mar in Spain’s northern Cantabria region. During the closure, visitors have had to make do with replicas of the paintings, with only scientists allowed into the cave to carry out research. Source: www.thelocal.es

Spain welcomes record 9 million tourists in August The number of foreign visitors to Spain topped 9 million in August, the highest number ever and up nearly 9 percent on the same month in 2013. Spain welcomed 9,070,024 visitors in August, the first time the 9,000,000mark has been passed. The figure also means the country received 8.8 percent more visitors last month than a year earlier, Spain’s national broadcaster TVE reported on Monday. The UK remained the main source of Spain’s visitors with 2,136,879 Brits making the trip south, a rise of over 5 percent on a year earlier. There was also a 9.4 percent surge in the number of French people travelling to Spain, with 1,981,643 people from France visiting their southern neigh-

Is it safe to buy Bottle Brush plants here and what sort of special treatment do they need?

ANSWER:

Yes, it is most certainly OK to buy them here and they are not expensive. I have two growing up here in my mountains, one planted in the ground and the other, which I brought over with me from UK, in a large tub. Originally from Australia, Callistemons are an ideal example of how, on occasions, plants which adapt to very hot and dry conditions often have strange flowers. With their clusters of long and colourful stamens at the tip of, and all around, a stem, they form a cylinder between 2 and 4 inches long. As the flower fades the stem elongates beyond it and you get new leaves growing from that point onwards. Most odd! The ‘brushes’ are red, tipped with yellow, and are produced all over the plant, often twice a year. The name Callistemon comes from the Greek - Kallos, meaning beauty and Stemon, meaning stem. They are fairly easy to grow but dislike strong midday sun in summer and have a tendency to wilt badly if subjected to it. They do, however, like a lot of light. Water them freely in spring and summer, sparingly in winter; giving a liquid feed from mid-

summer to early autumn. Propagation is by taking heel cuttings in summer. Callistemons require very little pruning, really only to tidy them up after flowering and to prevent crowding of shoots; anything more drastic and it will inhibit flowering for next year. My Bottle Brush in the pot is nearly 3ft tall and wide. I am anticipating the one I planted in the ground to grow much larger in time. Both are in positions sheltered as much as possible from winter frost and winds and they don’t seem to mind the cold too much. Keep an eye open for scale insects and use a spray to eliminate; if leaves show signs of yellowing it is generally due to lack of feed. I can strongly recommend these shrubs in any garden for their easy care and unusual flowers.

Authorities in the Spanish capital are looking to restrict access to drivers who don’t live in the city’s most central neighbourhoods by imposing €90 ($115) fines on cars that breach the new regulations. From January 2015, Madrid’s central neighbourhoods of Sol, Palacio, Cortes and Embajadores will probably no longer be accessible by car unless the people at the wheel are residents or wish to leave their car in one the 13 car parks found within the 352-hectare (860-acre) ‘cordoned-off’ area. Spearheaded by Madrid’s former mayor and current Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, the new measures are likely to cost €500,000 ($640,000) a year but will potentially reduce traffic congestion by a third in the narrow streets of the capital’s Centro district. “The main objective is to reduce the number of drivers looking

for parking spaces in these busy neighbourhoods whilst also offering more spots to residents,” Madrid town hall representatives have said. Spanish national daily El País reported the news on Sunday, pointing out that if drivers are unable to find a place to park in the 13 underground car parks because they are full, their registration numbers will still be recorded by one of 22 security cameras watching over the exits. If drivers decide to leave the area, authorities will then send a €90 fine to their home address. Motorbikes will have free access from 7am to 10 at night while delivery vans will only be able to enter the zone from 10am to midday on working days. Madrid’s controversial mayor Ana Botella, who announced on September 10th she will not be running for 2015’s municipal

elections, has plans to extend the restrictive measures to the city’s hip neighbourhoods of Malasaña and Chueca before her mandate ends. The congestion charges form part of a Mobility Plan (Plan de Movilidad) approved before the summer which also includes higher parking meter rates and a 25 percent increase in pedestrian zones in the city centre. There are currently 1.7 million vehicles in Spain’s capital, 80 percent of which are cars, even though there are already congestion restrictions in place in the city. In Madrid’s centre the average driving speed is only 21km/h and there is a 6 percent chance of being stuck in a serious traffic jam. Noise and air pollution in Madrid still fall short of the levels set by the EU and official health bodies. Source : www.thelocal.es

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. “Hello World”! Go on, Admit it, you’re a little confused, maybe even a little intrigued. Don’t be, because today’s article is about something that every computer student has to go through. By this, I mean, programming. I can almost hear the groans of disbelief and despair coming from many of you good readers, but let me, in my own individual way, help you understand the very core of every Program, Application and (forgive me!!!) App that you use. The sub-species (and I mean that with much tongue in cheek) of ‘homo sapien’ commonly known as the ‘programmer’, ‘coder’, ‘hacker’ (from the days when newspaper writers used typewriters that needed to be hit hard to work – hence ‘Hack’) and even ‘Wizard’, spend their lives solving problems. You, good reader, will do a Crossword, a Puzzle or Sudoku with the intent of solving questions, puzzles and conundrums. It is possibly because you have a desire to win or to prove that you still can beat the quiz master – and quite right too! For the people who live in the ‘Blue Nowhere’ (a euphemism for the internet) their very nature is one of curiosity. During their younger years they might spend the summer days wandering meadows following a trail left by some small animal or maybe disassemble everything in sight just to find out how it worked. These people are the inventors, those with minds of Willow, both flexible and incredibly strong. This curiosity leads to tenacity, a need to see something to the end, regardless of effort. It is because of these qualities that we should ‘Give credit where it is due’ as my dad was fond of saying. When you’re working out your Sudoku or Crossword puzzle, you are using rules.

These can be learned through trial and error or by the beneficent assistance of someone much wiser. In that regards Programmers are very similar! We are taught (or learn) rules of logic, given syntax to follow and a language of strict words to learn. These are the tools of the programmer and without them you, program’s user, wouldn’t be able to write an article or love letter in your favourite word processor or do any one of a thousand things that you take for granted every day when using your computer. So let’s go back to the beginning when I said “Hello World”. This is an in-joke. Everyone who starts to program, regardless of their chosen programming language (and there are many), invariably writes their first program which prints out a message, and this message is “Hello World”. This is because that it is the simplest of working programs that can be done in most programming languages. In BASIC, which was the first programming language I learned so long ago I don’t care to remember, it goes like this: 10 PRINT “Hello World!” = Line number → Command → Text for displaying It printed Hello World on my TV screen (remember the days when home computers used the house TV!). It has been a long time since I have programmed and am really finding the challenge, well challenging! Like the Willow Tree, I may bend in the breeze of uncertainty but I will absolutely not give in until I have completed my task. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further articles that will be useful to you.

ASpainhistory of Moorish Spain (1) and the Iberian Peninsula almost the entire peninsula and even

was, in times past part of the Roman Empire, then the Visigoths, and lastly under Moorish control. The ‘Moors’ were actually composed of two tribes; Berbers and Arabs who hailed from Mauritania (south of Morocco). Religion is all too often the sad catalyst for warfare and the Moors converted to Islam around 700AD. Around the same time the heirs of the Visigoth king Witiza on the peninsula had been usurped by Roderick (remember Life of Brian? We want Woderick!) He had been chosen by nobles to reign instead of King Witiza’s son and indeed he later killed him in battle. King Roderick ruled for just a year from 710-711 as King Witiza’s heirs asked the Moors for help; their leader Tarik ibn Ziyad crossed the sea with his mercenary army and landed at Jebelal-Tarik or Tarik’s mountain which we know as Gibraltar. Roderick was defeated but instead of handing power back to the Visigoths, Tarik called up reinforcements and the Moorish invasion began. Within 20 years the Moors had conquered

crossed the Pyrenees into Frankish territory before being defeated in battle by Charles Mantel in 733. The mountainous region of the Asturias in the far north then called Ishbaniya, was ruled by Pelayo and proved too much for the Moors to conquer. Apparently Manuza the Moorish Governor of Leon took a fancy to Pelayos sister and got permission from Tarik to try and take Pelayo hostage and transfer him to Cordoba. Manuza was slain after defeat by Pelayo at the battle of Covadonga around 720. Asturias became a refuge for fleeing Christian nobles and an independent kingdom was established here in 722 by the now King Pelayo. Asturias became the starting point for the Christian reconquest of Spain. King Pelayos daughter married a local Chieftain called Alfonso. Pelayo died in 737 after reigning for almost eighteen years and recapturing about a quarter of the peninsula. In 749 Abd-er-Rahman survived a brutal massacre in Damascus of the

passwords!!!

I’m sure you know what I mean. That moment, that dreaded moment in the supermarket, when you’ve put your password into that hand held device, only for it display everybody’s nightmare phrase-user name or password incorrect. You chance a guilty look behind and see the queue of shoppers, trolleys twitching angrily, growing by the second, all staring angrily at you, daring you to get it wrong for a second time. Invariably, you do, whilst all the time being subject to the steely glare of the person on the till, who appears to be expecting you to bolt for the exit without paying. What a nightmare passwords are, well for most of us anyway. James Bond never seems to have a problem remembering them. He sees something once and that’s it, he remembers it forever, well at least until the end of the film, which incidentally, is longer than I can ordinarily keep a password in my head. I had a few hours to spare and got to wondering, as you do, how passwords first came about? What made some mischievous person come up with the idea in the first place? Believe it or not they’ve been around for a long long time. Just read the beginning of Hamlet, I’m sure that was already on your things to do list for today. But if you do happen upon it, you’ll see that a password is used right at the start. We can’t blame Shakespeare, although he does get the blame for a number of things, mostly for a boring hour or so spent in a classroom listening to his plays being read, badly, by students! No, it seems that the real culprits were those Ancient Egyptians. Apparently they had to give a password for getting into places and easing their way past guards with pointy spears. Is that worse than the twitching trolleys? I’m not awfully sure it is. One of the advantages those Egyptians had over us is that they didn’t have to remember so many passwords. I’ve always thought that I was the clever one by keeping my passwords simple-you know, 12345 or even, passwordbut apparently they are the most popular passwords of all. So, just as I thought all along...I’m not so clever at all. Or maybe I am. If I change my password to “Incorrect” then if I forget it, the machine will simply remind me! Brilliant! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. ruling Umayyad dynasty. The Abbassid family had invited 80 unsuspecting Umayyad leaders to a banquet where they were promptly murdered. The Abbasids then became the Caliphs of Baghdad so starting the Golden Age of Islamic culture. Somehow Abd-er Rahman managed to escape and he fled to Morocco where supporters prepared for him to cross to Granada which he did in 755 to Almunecar. There he defeated his opponents and he was declared Emir of Al-Andalus starting a new Umayyad dynasty and ruled for 30 years. Thus the Empire was split into two factions The Umayyad to the west and the Abbassid to the east. At this time the Islamic Empire extended across the whole of North Africa towards China and in 751 AD the Abbassids defeated the Chinese at the battle of Samarkand in what is now Uzbekistan. This was culturally a very important place as it was on the famed silk route linking east and

west and new techniques of paper manufacturing were being developed here. Some paper manufacturers were kidnapped at the battle and taught the Arab conquerors the art of papermaking. Slowly the use of paper spread westwards throughout the Empire and a new age of learning or enlightenment began. The Church at Cordoba was bought from the Visigoth Christians by Abder-Rahman; the task of converting the former Christian church into a mosque started in 784AD, and lasted 200 years. Traditionally the Mihrab in a mosque faces south-east towards Mecca so praying worshippers face the correct way. In the case of the Mezquita (which is named after Abd-er-Rahmans wife) the Mihrab faces south. Either the old church foundations were used, or because southwards lies Damascus the scene of Abd-er Rahmans lucky escape four decades earlier!

First-hand information and the chance to browse overseas homes and make valuable contacts will be on offer in coming weeks as the autumn property exhibitions in the UK get underway, with expectations they’ll be busier than 2013. Richard Way, Editor at OverseasGuidesCompany.com said: “With interest in foreign property, in particular the Spanish, Portuguese and French markets showing a marked year-on-year increase, exhibitors at events such as A Place in the Sun Live which takes place at the start of October, can look forward to being busy.” For people considering the purchase of an overseas home, whether as a primary or second home, or for investment, exhibitions are priceless for research. Meeting and speaking in person to people who are experienced in the overseas property sector is a great starting point for buyers, enabling them to find agents, lawyers

and other service providers they would be comfortable working with. “Exhibitions are a great way to make introductions and find companies you can trust when buying abroad, as well as learn from the free seminars,” said Richard Way. “We exhibit as much as we can and always encourage visitors to come and chat to our team. Another bonus is that exhibitors often offer promotions that are exclusive to an event, whether it’s reduced property or discounted viewing trips. We advise visitors to come prepared, know what they want to achieve from a long day at an exhibition, and not to be scared to ask questions. And of course, enjoy the event.” Richard Way will be on the seminar panel at A Place in the Sun Live at the NEC Birmingham, 3rd to 5th October 2014. The Overseas Guides company is exhibiting at stand A33. Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

Madrid unveils Margaret Thatcher square

The Spanish capital became the first city in the world to name a square after Margaret Thatcher, the controversial former British Prime Minister whose political legacy still divides opinion. A plan last year to name a Madrid street after the ‘Iron Lady’ of British politics was opposed by local left-wing politicians but the city hall’s ruling rightwing Popular Party (PP) instead pushed through the decision to dedicate a square to her memory. Outgoing Madrid mayor Ana Botella unveiled the new plaza on Monday and hailed Thatcher’s “commitment to freedom”, according to Spanish daily Publico. The square, in the conservative district of Salamanca, includes a Hard Rock Cafe and a five-star hotel. It has existed for decades but had never previously been named. Margaret Thatcher, the first female British Prime Minister, died on April 8th last year at the age of 87. Many people mourned her passing but some opponents of ‘Thatcherism’ held street parties. Botella described the divisive British politician as “one of the great personalities of the 20th Century” and said that Madrid wished to “recognize Margaret Thatcher by putting her name on this great city”. Botella was joined by Madrid PP president Esperanza Aguirre. The ceremony was the first time that the two had been seen in public together since Botella announced her decision to not stand as mayor in the next elections, a move widely attributed to political pressure from within her party. Aguirre, who is said to view Thatcher

euro

as a role model, described the former PM as a “political rebel” while the UK’s Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, said that Thatcher was “indisputably a great patriot and servant of her country.” Madrid has already planned to name a primary school after Thatcherwhich led critics to complain when it was announced last year. Baroness Thatcher was the first British Prime Minister to make an official visit to Spain, in 1988. During the 1982 Falklands War, Margaret Thatcher agonized over Gibraltar’s vulnerability to attack from Spain, according to The Guardian in December 2012. Nicknamed ‘the milk snatcher’ after putting an end to the distribution of free milk to schoolchildren during her time as Secretary of State, she was Prime Minister in Britain from 1979 until 1990 and became known as the “Iron Lady” for her uncompromising style. She earned the adulation of the right and the enmity of the left for her actions during the British miner’s strike, and for her political views espousing sweeping cuts and a smaller role for the state. Because of Thatcher’s personal friendship with Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who was indicted by Spain for human rights violations, and limited contact with Madrid, some people took to Twitter to protest: Source: www.thelocal.es

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

www.soltimes.com

What is a NIE? Why do I need one and where can I obtain one?

A NIE is a tax identification number assigned by the Spanish authorities to any foreigner, whether resident or non-resident, with interests in Spain or who may be contemplating taking certain actions in Spain. This number identifies you if you: are going to buy a home in Spain; need to sign a document before a Spanish notary; wish to become a Spanish resident; plan to start a business in Spain or take shares in, or become a director of, a Spanish company; or are a student registering on a Spanish university course. These are examples only. · You can apply for a NIE either in Spain or at the Spanish consulate nearest to you in your home country. You’ll need to file an application form and supply personal data, including an address for notifications, and state the reason for your application. You may be asked to supply supporting documentation. A photocopy of your passport – having first shown your original when making your application

– is also required. · Wherever you make your application, it’ll be sent for processing to the police authority in Madrid responsible for issuing NIEs. It usually takes at least two months for them to issue the NIE. So don’t leave getting your NIE to the last minute! · Your NIE will be sent in the form of a confirmatory letter. Keep it safe (taking a photocopy of it and keeping that photocopy in a separate location). It’s difficult and time consuming to obtain duplicates. · As said, you can also apply for a NIE in Spain, as long as you’re in the country legally. So if you’re an EU resident you may take advantage of a holiday in Spain to apply for a NIE locally. Contrast with non-EU residents who can only apply for NIEs in Spain if they prove their presence in the country is legal, either by producing their visa or other authorisation validating their stay. If applying in Spain, note that an appointment must be made and the date given cannot be changed.

Where There’s Smoke: A Novella by Jodi Picoult.

“I might as well be a ghost. Last week, I was famous. This week, if I speak, no one will listen.” If you’re into psychics and the supernatural you’ll like this. It’s available as an ereader, a prequel to promote “Leaving Time” which will be available this autumn and is expected to be another best-seller from the popular American writer. Serendipity Jones experienced visions from a young age. When she indicated to her mother that a little boy dressed in knee-length black velvet trousers with a lacy collar around his neck was stealing things from their home, she thought her daughter was telling tales. “That boy’s not real.” This was back in the seventies. “If this had been today I would probably have been shuttled off to a child psychiatrist and given some kick-ass medication.” Serendipity’s great-great grandma had been an Iroquois healer. The story moves into 1993 and outlined the protagonist’s successful career as a psychic accompanied by her sentinels, referred to as her gatekeepers: Lucinda is a refined, elderly African-American woman whereas Desmond is a fierce, feisty, gay man. Both spirits leave Serendipity high and dry at one stage when she feels more of a charlatan,

a fraud than a genuine psychic.

t h e

Her father committed suicide and the family were so poor that they survived on Campbell weeks, basically meaning that they ate canned soup until mother’s next paycheck. Now the situation is different. They both live in Malibu and life is luxurious. “She can eat caviar if she wants to instead of tomato soup.” Cleo was a chat-show host and Serendipity was invited to do a reading for her. It proved so successful that Cleo was awarded an Emmy and Serendipity was given a spin-off along with instant fame and fortune. Her newest guest is Betsey Rycroft from California whose husband had died in Karbala, Iraq. The same day she received the tragic news, she learned of her pregnancy. Marcy, the executive producer “believes a militarythemed show will be a ratings booster.” Unfortunately the paranormal can be unpredictable and explosive as Serendipity discovers when she is confronted by a poltergeist, intense heat and burning. There is panic in

hurtled at her that she is antiwar, anti-American and a traitor. In order to restore Serendipity’s reputation as the nation’s favourite psychic Marcy decides that she will help find the son of a senator who had been kidnapped recently. Ratings restored and everyone happy. What could go wrong? What happened when her psychic sentinels abandon her and the Senator is so tanked up on alcohol and his wife doped up on anti-anxiety meds which meant no connection with the paranormal, no energy. Does this mean the end of her wonderful career? A shocking discovery awaits if you can stomach the horror. “Sometimes, all you can do is watch things burn, and wait for the ash to settle.” If you like the sound of this free ereader then you’ll meet up with Serendipity and others in “Leaving Time.” Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton. Available free from Amazon.

Cut each half into 3.5 cm (1½ in) thick slices, leaving the slices attached at the base. Hold the slices apart and spread each one thinly with pesto, then press them back together. Wrap the bread in foil and set aside. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and fry gently for 5 minutes or until softened but not browned. Stir in the peppers and cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour in the stock and remove from the heat. Place the bread in the oven to heat for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, purée the soup in a blender until smooth. Return the soup to the pan and stir in the passata, thyme, cinnamon and sugar. Heat the soup gently without allowing it to boil. Season to taste. Ladle the soup into warm bowls and garnish each portion with a spoonful of crème fraîche and a sprig of basil. Serve with the hot pesto bread. Source: www.allrecipes.co.uk

Cow did that happen mystery?

A confused calf has become a bizarre hit in eastern more growing from its neck. China after being born with six fully formed legs. Farmer Zhang Gongxun said: “I’ve raised the mother The youngster emerged on a farm in the coastal for five years and seen her through four births and I’ve province of Shandong with four normal legs and two never seen anything like this before.” He added: “The extra legs don’t seem to bother or hurt her but she can’t move them or use them. “Everyone seems to want to see her since a friend put some pictures of her on the internet. “I get crowds of people here every day and all kinds of camera crews from TV stations.” Vets have ruled out claims that the legs came from a

genetic mutation caused by pollution. Instead, they say they are probably the remains of a twin calf which was nearly completely absorbed during the pregnancy. Expert Guo Hsiao said: “It happens when there isn’t quite a full separation of the twins and the smaller, weaker one is consumed. “As long as the legs are not attached to any major nerves or blood vessels, we would be able to remove them without damaging the calf.” Farmer Zhang said: “That operation is necessary if the animal can be sold. But I have already been offered far more than the market value by animal parks - and I am considering the offers.”

Christine Gonzalez says the Oriental Shorthair’s prominent black marking left her no other choice but to call him Stache. The ten month old pet has attracted an online following after a photo was posted on social news site Reddit. Stache’s photograph has been viewed more than 600,000 times, while the feline also has hundreds of followers on Instagram and Twitter. Ms Gonzalez said her pet was fittingly born in November, when many people participate in the Movember challenge. “He is certainly no ordinary cat and the fact that his colouring with a full moustache is so unique make him an instant hit with everybody,” she said.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

www.soltimes.com

One man and his dog, that is Pete and Lucy, the Dog That Is Not Ours, went out for their saunter in the campo and came home as one man and his dog and a cat. The cat greeted me joyously, though I have since discovered that she greets every human with ecstatic enthusiasm. She is a most appealing cat, both in appearance and manner, and as she is almost completely black she would make a good Witch’s Familiar, thus the name *Magrat seemed appropriate. The following day our garden was still the cat’s favoured residence, so with the aid of Andy and his cat box, and the co-operation of Magrat, who seemed quite keen on a car trip around Andalucia, we set out to find her a permanent home. We exhausted all possibilities both charitable and private in Albox and Arboleas, then desperately followed a promising lead up the Arroyo Acietuno, looking for a place described as ‘up, up in the mountains’. Andy drove ever upwards, to infinity and beyond while I worried and stressed and Magrat calmly admired the scenery. We drove so far into the middle of Nowhere that I was convinced that we were going to disappear down Nowhere’s navel, but eventually we reached Los Uteras, which is pretty much the same thing! Our efforts were again in vain – even my offer of good hard cash out of my own

pocket to pay for Magrat’s bed and board until she found a home bore no fruit. Magrat, Lucy and I would be delighted for her to continue in residence, but she is a victim of her own affectionate nature – Pete, who is not too steady on his pins, can not run the risk being brought down by a cat lovingly wrapping itself around his legs. Next day Magrat casually introduced us to her two kittens, about 8 weeks old, which she had presumably been hiding in the campo. They were copybook cute and very quick, but not quick enough – today there was one kitten and a lot of fluff spread over the campo behind our house. I am at my wits’ end. I urgently need a home for Magrat and her one remaining kitten, Etcetera, before Etcetera too becomes a snack for some passing fox. *Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series feature Magrat, whose tender heart and loving nature compensate for her ineffectiveness as a Witch. She was christened Magrat by accident josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk – her mother misspelt Margaret.

pause for thought

There’ve been a number of fairly high profile cases this past year where folk have been sacked for wearing a cross at work. And whether we support their right to wear that particular religious symbol or their employer’s right to disallow it probably depends on our own particular religious convictions. For a cross has little significance in its own right. A particularly inhumane instrument of torture and death, considered by religious leaders of the day to indicate rejection by God, the cross was used to make examples of certain convicted criminals, to deter others from following them. So a cross, on the face of it, speaks of abject failure and God’s judgement. Not then something with which reasonable folk would wish to be associated. But to a Christian, the cross has immense significance, reminding us that of ourselves we can do nothing to earn God’s favour. That our best endeavours are so ineffectual that a truly radical solution had to be found if there were to be any chance of a restored relationship between ourselves and God. And that solution required the death, the judgement and the rejection by God of the only truly good and perfect person to have ever lived, as substitute for all the rest of us. That in essence is the Christian

viewpoint The Call Centre

Following the collapse of the Alquerian tourist industry and the subsequent legal action the Village Republic needed to replenish its coffers. There was no shortage of suggestions. Bank robbery, hostage taking were all discussed even the more ridiculous suggestion of actually working for a living was mooted. Always eager to take the easy option, it was decided to set up a call centre in Alqueria. A customer had already been found in the shape of a large British telecommunications company. The success of the employment drive for the call centre was variable. Due to high power inertia that exists in Alqueria there were only two applicants. Loco Paco, who thought it was a competition to win a years supply of axolotl food and Blythe Gruntmore, eager to converse in his own language once more. The fact that Blythe Gruntmore’s Geordie accent was incomprehensible to anyone south of Newcastle was unknown to most Alquerians. However the British were used to call centres where operators couldn’t string a coherent sentence together. As it was Britain that this service was aimed there shouldn’t be a problem. Loco Paco, apart from not speaking a word of English had a poor track record with people and even animals for that matter. People he kept

at arms length in case they intruded into the make-believe world he had built up around himself. As far as animals were concerned the first Saharan Dung Beetle he trained soon discovered he was Paco’s intellectual superior and moved out. The Beetle still lives in the Village. If they accidentally bump into one-another they try to avoid all eye contact. As the switchboard lit up for the first time and the centre went live Blythe got into his stride. Such gems as “Rabooot yer rooutah, pet” and “Wheeel hev te sen a gadgie te check yer foone bonny lad” soon assailed the ears of callers . As no-one could understand this gibberish no-one could argue with his advice. Loco Paco who couldn’t understand a word simply selected an answer at random from a type written sheet of paper and read the English which he made unfathomable with Spanish pronunciations and accent. He would often break into Spanish telling the unfortunate individual on the other end of the phone all about his imaginary five foot tall rodent friend Bert. Even though callers became irritated, swore and issued death threats the call centre was a great success. It was cheap, eroded the callers will to live so much so that their complaint seemed insignificant compared to the hell of calling the call centre. After all isn’t this the real purpose of these places.

faith.

So, to us as Christians, the cross symbolises restoration; it reminds us of the value God places on each of us that we should be worth so great a sacrifice. It reminds us that forgiveness of wrong in our lives is available to all, and not just the good, the wise or the very religious. That it depends, not on my doing the best I can, but of simply accepting, however little my understanding, God’s offer to attribute all my wrongdoings to the crucified Christ. So St Paul wrote: “We preach Christ crucified; inconsistent and offensive to the religious and utter stupidity to those who consider themselves intellectual, but to those who acknowledge him, whatever their circumstances, the power and the wisdom of God.”

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

CD Montesinos v Crevillente

The first game of the season is always difficult especially playing a new team in this league who you know nothing about and MONTE were quickly reminded as after only 10 mins a LOPEZ clearance hit his own defender to give the home side a 1-0 lead. It was Crevillentes first attack on goal and before that Monte had 2 chances to score. The opening goal woke the away side up and they continued to hammer the Crevillente goal but only poor finishing and luck kept the score at 1-0 missed chances by OMAR,MARCOS AND CARLOS should have been enough to see MONTE go in at half time leading. h/t 1-0 The beginning of the second half seen the home side extend their lead after slack MONTE defending. This immediatley resulted in a MONTE substitution DIMITRY coming off for EDU, Monte then seemed to exert the pressure and on 55mins CREVILLENTE were reduced to 10 men after their no9 seemed to headbut OMAR in a challenge. Straight away Monte went for the jugular MARCOS hit a screamer 2-1. RUBEN came on for OMAR made it 2-2 from the penalty spot DARIO shotly afterwards fed ALBERTO to make it 2-3. Monte kept up the pressure and soon it was 2-4 when FERNANDO put in CARLOS for a well worked goal, Monte although strolling were not finished and CARLOS ended a fine afternoon performance to easily convert MONTES 5th of the match. Next week Monte are at home to CD MURADA K.O 5.30 PM. For more info contact www. cdmontesinos.com.

SPORT & motoring La Marina Golf Society The Masters At Font Del Lop

A slightly cooler morning greeted us for one of our major trophies of the year. The course was ,as usual,in excellent condition ,and the greens ,although slow, were recovering well from the recent hollow-tining. However, a few comments emerged regarding the rough, which tended to grab your ball and hide it from view unless you stood on top of it. Some excellent scores were achieved, although the winning score was as decisive as that in the Scottish Referendum. In 3rd place with an impressive 35 points was Graham Marriner, bettered by early favourite Alan Craig with 36 points. However, the Trophy was won by President Barry Thorogood with a magnificent 41 points and he was suitably humble when he received the Trophy at our 50’s /60’s Night at The La Marina Sports Complex that evening. Barry also shared the 2’s money with Carol Marriner. Nearest the pin Winners were two for Carol Marriner, one for Lynn Young and lastly one for Colin Yarnton who informed me that this achievement was very high on his Bucket-List. Alicante Golf 19th September 2014

This month’s outing was at Alicante Golf. Everybody arrived in good time and we knew that it was going to be a very hot and long day. The course had informed us that although the greens had been hollow tined, we were not aware that they were still hollow tining the fairways. This made life difficult on some fairways but did not make too much difference at the end of the day. Our eventual winner informed us that he had played no golf in the last three months during his travels around Europe and the UK but whatever he got up too it certainly improved his golf. Nevertheless the scores showed what the heat can do when playing golf as they were lower than average. Unfortunately we had a poor turnout this month with only 14 members and two guests but having

got back to the Clubhouse everybody said how much they had enjoyed their day. After an excellent spaghetti bolognese by Bernie the Chef and hospitality from Chris and his staff at Mono’s the presentations were made and the results are below. Football Draw: Dave Morgan, Ken Brett, Chris Stanley and Jim Weston The results of TOFFS who played on Tuesday 16 September, were as follows: Gold Division 1st Tony Hitt 41 points 2nd Malcolm Foskett 40 points 3rd John Barraclough 37 points Silver Division 1st Stan Low 40 points 2nd Bob Shorley 39 points 3rd Ian Stewart 36 points Bronze Division 1st Brian

The Gold lads fared slightly better and it needed 33 points to give Vernon Brown 4th place. Arne Hansson took 3rd place with 35 points and one point ahead was Vice-Captain John Eyre with a normal winning score of 36 points, however, Steve Higgins has to be very thankful for the phone call at 8am that woke him up and made sure he got to the course on time, albeit a little worse for wear. His 38 points was enough for Gold Winners prize and top score on the day.

Roy Rogers’s 32 was enough to take the runners-up slot with Jack Daroszewski taking the bacon home with 33 points.

If all golf course employees were as helpful, cheerful and with a “will do anything to make your day’s golfing pleasant” attitude, golfing in Spain would be in a better place than it is right now. Without doubt, the employees of La Marquessa go that extra yard to ensure golf at this updated and much improved track.

The golf on the day was a mix bag of scores and tales of slow greens with putts being left short to which the answer is quite simple, hit the bloody ball harder! All 4 NTP’s were won and John Eyre took two of the 4 prizes for his tee shots on the 5th and 11th. The other bottles of wine went to Patrick Long for the 11th and the Belfast Bandit (Ernie Wilson) for his tee shot to the 17th. The “Two’s Pot” was won by Vernon Brown and Simon Lee who was heard to say the 13€ he won would be enough to pay for his annual haircut. Simon appears to like the greens here; this is the second time he has taken the “Two’s Pot” The Silver boys (and girls) seem to

After the game, we sat down to a 3 course meal, which included a half bottle of wine for a mere 12.50€ each and it must be said, there was not one hungry belly left at the tables. The food was excellent and the service was even better than excellent. This is, without any doubt, the best menu of the day you will ever find, especially on a golf course! Photo: Silver category winners Our next game, Wednesday 24th September 2014, see’s us catching a bus to Albacete to play Las Pinaillas golf course where for 55€ all in (including a meal) you could join us for a friendly knock; so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY

Roda – 17.09.14 Our game Roda has been in the calender for a long time, but due to recent events not only did we play our usual stableford, but also ´The Jose Trophy´. Jose ran the Lo Crispin Tavern where we all met after the games every Wednesday. He always greet us with a smile and did his best to teach us Spanish, unfortunately last week he passed away suddenly leaving a big void in our community. It seemed only fitting that we should dedicate a trophy to him, especially as on the 17 September, he was giving members and partners a free meal as a thank you for our patronage. Roda proved difficult for most of us, with the only players posting reasonable scores were the three guests. Nevertheless, one or two members did manage to reach

over the 30 points mark, well done them. The achievers were: The winner of ´The Jose Trophy´ with the best score was Ray Brown with 34pts His picture is shown with David, Jose´s son in law, who presented the trophy. (Ray is on the left) Gold Division: 1st Ray Brown 34pts, 2nd Meirion Roberts 30pts (cb) and 3rd Ian Stuart 30pts Silver Division: 1st Dave Lewis 30pts, 2nd Mike Cutts 28pts (cb) and 3rd Gordon Cobb 28pts Bronze Division: 1st Steve Harrington 28pts, 2nd Danny McErlean 22pts and 3rd Paul Carter 20pts. The best guest was Danny Wheatley who playing off 6, had 36pts. NTPs: Eddy Downing hole 2, Danny Wheatley hole 7, Mike Cutts hole 11 and Scott Blair hole 13. Rod Day was the only one with a 2 so scooped 50€ and Phil Rhodes won the Free Game Draw. Thanks must go the David and his staff for going ahead with the meal in the first place, as Jose was the chief chef, but also doing a sterling job with the food as they had to cater for 50 people a job well done.
