F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone), were delighted to receive a Hole (whole) lot of money in one go recently when the Boxers Golf Society presented them with a cheque at the Hostel Meson in Arboleas. A total of €360 was raised by the golfers during the course of their Annual Presentation Evening, when they held a charity raffle. The Boxers Golf Society have been supporters of F.A.C.E. for several years and their donations have in turn helped F.A.C.E. to support other groups such as the A.E.C.C. (Asociación Española Contra El Cáncer), M.A.C.S. (Mojacar Area Cancer Support) and Albox Grupo Scout 106 del Saliente. forget me not SAVE TO THE MAx not just a card shop!

You will always find a smile and a warm welcome from Sue Ennis down at Forget me not which has just celebrated its second anniversary of trading under Sue’s ownership. Forget me not is a card and gift shop with a difference! Sue strives to be different to other card shops like buying unusual cards and gifts that cannot be found anywhere else along with the more traditional. Plus it is also a “Royal Mail” post office with all the trimmings that you expect to find offering a UK & worldwide post, parcel & courier service. Forget me not also boasts an exquisite range of silver Jewellery, bag charms exclusively made for forget me not. Ye olde sweetie shop now stocks up to 30 ranges of all the old favourites including a new sugar free range which are so popular they are gone before they arrive! There are the regular visitors to the paperback library always on the hunt for the latest top novels which recently have included the well known fifty shades of grey. There are 6 new local suppliers to the shop all offering their handmade crafts & jewellery exclusively to forget me not. Sue also offers a British passport renewal

service for expats which has recently been reduced in price thus saving a small fortune, she can do it all on your behalf at no extra cost. Forget me not has secure mailboxes to rent to make sure you get your post & parcels safely at a very competitive price with no hidden extras i.e. people sharing. Sue will also try and help in obtaining items on special requests like 100 heart shaped rose petal boxes needed for a Spanish wedding during the summer last year where the customer was so pleased she cried... Its nice just have a browse in forget me not because you never know what you might find in there. Sue has great fun sourcing presents for all the family from as little as 5 Euros as she has always got the costs of postage in the back of her mind having lived in Spain herself for nearly 11 years and knows just how expensive that can get. Size does matter when it comes to having to post. Because of the royal mail postal service Sue has added a stationery corner so customers can get their envelopes, jiffy bags, writing pads, pens & pencils, selotape & drawing pins. Sue also has some good money saving tips when it comes to posting cards & presents so can always advise when needed. Remember at forget me not you can.... choose it.... write it....post it....all under one roof how FABULOUS is that? Come and have a browse you will not be disappointed Forget me not situated at Las Buganvillas, close to the big roundabout on the Road Vera- Garrucha (in-between Victors Bar & Stella’s Hairdressers) Open Mon- Sat 9.30 am – 2.30pm Tel: 663 302 740 E: forgetmenotcardsandgifts@ymail.com Or find us on Facebook

EUROPEAN DAY is celebrated throughout the European Union on 9th May each year. This year, European Day falls on a Friday, and whilst we shall celebrate in the main Plaza de Constitución in Torrevieja throughout the morning of Friday 9th May, other events are planned over the preceding weekend. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon Sanchez, has pleasure in inviting you to this year’s “EUROPEAN DAY” celebrations which will take place, as usual, in the Plaza de la Constitucion, Torrevieja from 10.40h until 14.00h on FRIDAY 9th MAY. This event is, of course, open to the public in general and i would be gratefull if you would circulate this as widely as possible.

ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER? With temperatures already soaring, now is the time to get your home ready for summer and all those visitors who will be descending on us anytime soon! A little time spent preparing now will mean you can relax and enjoy time with your family and friends instead of rushing around at the last minute! Washing your curtains and cushion covers will freshen them up after the winter. You could consider new voiles instead of curtains for the summer to let the light in and keep the sun out. There are some fabulous voiles available in both modern and traditional designs. Blinds can be every bit as eye-catching as curtains and are practical, durable and cost effective. Great for keeping the sun out and protecting your furniture, they are really easy to install. Yorkshire Linen has a new range of blinds including blackouts. Throws are also a good idea to protect your sofas and chairs from suntan lotion, sticky fingers and sweaty bodies! BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS Make your bedroom a haven of cool and comfort by choosing your bedding with care. The type of pillow or duvet you choose, and whether you use mattress and pillow protectors or toppers, can all make a difference to the quality of your sleep. If you´re still using your winter duvets it´s a good time to get them cleaned and stored ready for next winter. Depending on the size of your washing machine, you could wash them yourself. If not you will need to have them dry cleaned. Check the prices for dry cleaning as many of our customers tell us that sometimes it´s less expensive to buy a new duvet! 4.5 tog duvets are perfect for now until the temperature really soars and all you want is a cool sheet. Contrary to popular belief, memory foam will not make you any hotter but will make you more comfortable and therefore you will sleep better. If you´ve never tried it, join the millions who sleep so much better with a memory foam or latex pillow or topper. If you prefer hollow fibre there are some great pillows to choose from including ones with built in support or pillows made to feel soft as down. Our Cool Nights pillows are extremely popular due to their silver threads which help to regulate body temperature. Tests show up to a 21% decrease in temperature. Feather pillows are still the first choice for many people. Whatever you prefer,

have a look at your pillows – do they need replacing? Do you have enough for your visitors? Current advice is to replace your pillow about once a year for hygiene and comfort reasons. Warmer nights give you a great opportunity to dress your bed in lighter layers. 100% Egyptian cotton sheets will keep you cooler and more comfortable during the hot nights. You may also like to consider Egyptian cotton mattress protectors. White always looks fresh, cool and summery topped with a quilt cover, throw or bedspread and of course, cushions! Sorry guys, it´s a girl thing! The more cushions the better! Add a splash of colour to create an inviting and fresh space. Choose pastels for a calming effect or hot colours for a brighter Mediterranean look. There are some gorgeous quilt covers and bedspreads around now and many of them are available with co-coordinating curtains and cushions. Many of our customers find it so much easier to buy a complete look for a bedroom with everything perfectly coordinated. Others like to mix and match. Whichever you prefer there has never been more choice and temptation! Still, if we can´t treat ourselves now and again... BRIGHT BATHROOMS Next room to check is the bathroom. Make your bathroom feel light and bright with fresh new towels and bath mats. Try some new colours to celebrate the arrival of summer. Lime, cerise, aqua or orange are all great for this season adding a real zing to your bathroom. A new shower curtain will also help to liven up shower time. Don´t forget the anti-slip shower mats especially if you have young or elderly guests staying with you. Lastly, new beach and pool towels are a must if yours are looking a bit tired. Make sure you have enough for all your visitors too! They never bring their own do they? Poncho pals are a great idea if you have kids visiting as they give protection from the sun as well as looking cool! Have a happy summer and enjoy every minute of the fabulous climate and beaches here with your family and friends. Yorkshire Linen in Puerto de Mazarrón offer a full range of bedding, towels, curtains, soft furnishings and decorative items. YUCCA

The yucca plant is a popular indoor and outdoor plant. One problem in caring for yucca plants that indoor owners have that outdoor owners generally do not is that indoor plants can grow too tall. Two miraculous recoveries

A few weeks ago the shelter received a desperate call for help from a German lady. She had adopted CANDY from the shelter two years ago. CANDY had escaped near Barcelona from a lay-by during a car trip home to Germany. It happened during confusion, caused when the owner had her belongings stolen. CANDY disappeared and after looking for her in the surrounding area and subsequently reporting the incident to the police, the owner had to continue her journey home. The shelter reacted immediately to the news and begun a Facebook search. They also advised volunteers in Cataluña. Over 1000 people became involved in the search and finally after two days a call came from a lady, saying that she had found CANDY. The lady had been walking in the woods with her dogs, about seven kilometres from the place that CANDY had disappeared from. She put a leash on Candy and took her home. The husband and daughter of the owner, when advised of the recovery, drove down from Hamburg all the way to Cataluña. They found CANDY, safe and well with her rescuer’s dogs. Now she is back home in Germany with her delighted mistress. They plan to come back to Almeria on holiday in the autumn.

JULIO who had recently arrived in Germany. He took advantage of an unguarded moment and headed for the nearby woods. A similar search was put into effect in Germany involving Facebook, flyers and also volunteers, who combed the woods close by. After two days a starving JULIO was recovered by offering him food. He was taken home and he was soon asleep, wrapped up comfortably in a blanket. Owners, please avoid these kinds of situations by having your dog chipped and registered officially. If you do lose a dog, get active on the internet and do not lose hope because dogs have been found after days of wandering around.

Town Hall Invests More Money In Police And Municipal Services By Martin Shortland to reach. The council is spending up to 500,000 euros on new vehicles for the police, municipal and beach cleaning services. The police are getting seven patrol cars, a 4 x 4 and six motorcycles to replace the current old and worn out vehicles. A lorry with a platform lift goes to the municipal services department and a shovel loader – worth 175,000 euros – goes to the beach cleaning department. The loader will be used by other departments when it is not required as much on the beaches during the winter months. Announcing the plans at the Town Hall last week, councillor Eloisa Cabrera said, “We are aware of the need to continue improving our beaches, as they are a precious asset to the town.” She explained that the tourism sector provided the local business community with a large percentage of its annual income, adding, “We are also conscious of the importance the beaches have to the ecosystem of this region and plan to work in other areas over the coming years to ensure we are protecting the environment in which we live.” She also announced an increase in the number of police bicycle patrols. The patrols were first introduced two summers ago, but because of lack of funding and manpower, were phased during the autumn and winter months. They were brought back again two months ago, initially with just two officers, but have proved so popular and effective the decision was made to put four more policemen in the saddle. The councillor said it was an excellent way of providing a visual presence of the police to the public, especially along the beach promenade which patrol cars are unable

Although the council is rightly proud of the quality of its beaches, there are other decisive factors they have to meet in order to retain the coveted Blue Flag status, granted to the municipality over five years ago. The blue flag is the highest award given to councils for not only the quality of their beaches; walkways, disability access, toilets, water quality, rubbish collection and safety all have to reach the maximum standards. Roquetas de Mar is one of only four municipalities in Andalucia able to boast the Blue Flag status, two councils were downgraded earlier this month when the annual awards were made. Whilst the businesses which feed off the tourist industry see the blue flag ranking as a welcome bonus to the resort, many would prefer to see a more sustained year round trade – something which doesn’t happen now. The season is far too short – May to September – for a resort blessed with an almost perfect year round climate. More than 50% of the tourist hotels in the urbanisation only open for that short period of time; for the rest of the year they’re closed. It’s a sad inditement of the state of affairs that surrounds, not the tourist industry, but the travel industry which is ultimately the life blood without which tourists can’t get here. Lack of access through Almeria airport has long been a complaint levelled by tourist industry representatives, but the situation remains the same. For much of the year this lovely part of Spain is virtually inaccessible, purely because the flight operators refuse to provide a year round service.

Causes include compression of the sciatic nerve roots by a herniated (torn) or protruding disc in the lower back. to curl her lashes. Curling makes them seem longer and thicker and gives the eyes a wider, more youthful look — but how on Earth do you get that effect with a tea spoon? ‘It’s actually very easy,’ says top make-up artist Sophia Price. ‘Simply hold the bowl of the tea spoon behind your upper lashes and work your way along your lash line with your thumb — pressing the hairs up and holding them for a few seconds along the edge of the spoon until they have a noticeable bend in them. ‘It works better if you warm the spoon between your fingers. Apply mascara immediately after curling to hold the shape.’ USE A MATCHBOX TO FILE YOUR NAILS A split nail can be infuriating and will catch on everything until it’s filed down. If you don’t have an emery board or clippers to hand, try the beauty editors’ favourite fast fix and search for a box of matches. ‘The strike strip — the bit you run the matches along — makes a surprisingly effective emergency nail file,’ says Roxanne Campbell, current UK Manicurist of the Year.

SOLTIMES MAY 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. We have discussed the idea of passwords, what makes a good password, what makes a memorable password and why the 2 ideas rarely mix. Today I would like to offer a freeware solution that will allow you to have a memorable password and still have these obscure entropically challenged passwords that websites seem to love. For those of you who have just thrown your hands into the air with the cry “What is it with this man and free?”. Well I’ll tell you! Not everyone has 1000’s of €’s pension every month, and to them, open source software that allows for an optional donation, is far preferable to paying an obscene amount of money for a program that doesn’t live up to the rhetorical hyperbole used in it’s advertising spin! This is just good business and fiscal, common sense. To my shame I have been conned into buying the ‘latest and greatest’ version of this and that program and found that I had better quality from freely available sources. The program that we are going to learn about today is called “Keepass”. What is it? Is it safe? How does it work? What makes it worth looking at? All very good questions so let’s look at the first of them. What is it? Keepass is a program that holds all your your passwords in a secure file that requires a single password to access it. It is available for Windows, Linux, Android PocketPC, Blackberry and all Apple based products (iPad, iPhone, OS X), basically everyone can use it. Is it safe? Now we have hit on the most important question. YES! It uses 2 encryption (coding) methods. AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is the only methods used and recommended by the NSA (National Security

Agency – USA) and TwoFish method. How does it work? Unlike some password holders, everything is encrypted with your password and remains like that. Your passwords and safe information are only decoded and visible on the screen, close it down and your information is still safe and the memory used is wiped (so no ‘james bond’ like information recovery)! What makes it worth looking at? Now this is where this program comes into its own. It comes in two (2) flavours; standard install and portable. With the first, everything (program, data and help files) are stores on the one computer. With the second, everything can be stored on the memory chip. I have taken paranoia to another level by having the program installed on every device that I use and then having the data file on a chip. No worrying about updating a number of devices just making a single backup of your password data file! As of today, the best features that this program has to offer is the automatic ‘Filling in’ of password fields. I have, currently, 5 email addresses each having a different login name and password, a facebook account, 2 paypal accounts, an English and Spanish bank account, and dozens of logins for teamviewer (a program that allows, with your consent, me to take over your machine, anywhere in the world, and fix it) and finally a partridge in a pear tree. All this information is secure and at my fingertips whenever I need it. This is just a brief overview of the program. For the full ‘skinny’ go to ‘www. keepass.info’ and see for yourself just what it has to offer. Good Hunting! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! If you would like a clinic nearer to you – make the suggestion using the email address under this article and we will see what can be done.

braben’s blog... Peaceful-NESS!

Well, there’s a claim that they’ve found the Loch Ness monster. The they in question are group of researchers who have been bobbing about on Loch Ness for some considerable time, pinging sonar here there and everywhere in an attempt to find this, allegedly, huge thing that lives there. Now, I am as romantic as the next person and would love to find the answer to some of the World’s greatest mysteries. It would be great to discover that the Loch Ness monster exists, that aliens are real or that some of the singers on Britain’s Got Talent are only pretending to sing badly. But what I wonder is, if the Loch Ness monster is as big as it’s supposed to be, how come we can’t find it? You would think, wouldn’t you that, with all the rinky dinky technology we have to hand, the problem of finding a large animal in a Scottish loch would prove much less of a challenge than, say, landing an unmanned craft on Mars or having a decent song winning the Eurovision Song Contest? It would seem not. The Loch Ness monster manages somehow to remain obstinately invisible to everything

alice’s restaurant

Last year when expIoring the delightful old quarter of Naples, or Napoli as it prefers I stumbled across an Aladdin’s Cave filled with DVDs. Always one for a rummage I found a copy of the 1969 film version of Alice’s Restaurant. I knew a film existed but had never seen it. Sadly I still haven’t seen parts of it as the video gets stuck in too many places but at 3€ what did I expect? The film came out just after Arlo Guthrie performed at Woodstock and it’s based on his 1967 anti-war song/tale Alice’s Restaurant, written as a protest against the Vietnam War. Voted 3rd best film of 1969, it grossed over $6 mil making it the 21st most viewed for the year. The Director Arthur Penn who’d also directed Bonnie and Clyde was nominated for an Oscar. Arlo sings the true tale of him and a friend doing a favour for Alice one Thanksgiving; remember Alice? Alice lived in the bell tower of an abandoned church and used to drop her rubbish from the tower into the church proper. They picked up the garbage (as they call it across the pond) and took it to the city dump. But the dump was closed so they found a little cliff off a side road which had a small pile of garbage at the bottom. Thinking one big pile was better than two little piles they dropped the garbage

we can throw at it. Perhaps if the thing is that intelligent we should be pleased that it keeps itself to itself, at the bottom of a pretty deep loch. Imagine the trouble it would cause if it decided to reveal itself and join us on the land? It may even overthrow a Kardashian or two! The thing that keeps me interested though is, what exactly would happen if this poor thing was finally discovered? Would it be hauled to the surface and put into some sort of aquarium? I wouldn’t be recommending that! We’ve all seen those horror films and we know exactly what would happen there don’t we? Just think King Kong and Fay Wray-for younger readers, ask your grandparents! I can just hear the “Jaws” music, can’t you? No, that’s a recipe for disaster To be perfectly honest, if the Loch Ness monster has any sense, it would stay where it was and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. For goodness sake, even the actor Charlie Sheen-well known lover of the quiet life- has been up there sailing around the loch looking for it. Now if that’s not a reason for the thing to stay submerged, I don’t know what is.

there. The next morning Police officer Obie phoned them as he had found Arlos name on an envelope at the bottom of the half ton pile of garbage. Arlo ends up with a $50 dollar fine and was told to pick up the garbage. When later he went to a US Army office to be processed and drafted to Vietnam he gets told to sit on the Group W bench because of his conviction. Jokingly Arlo recalls who he sat with all sorts of undesirables – mother rapers, father stabbers, even father rapers! All these desperate criminals ask him what he did to deserve being on the group W bench with the rest of them? He tells them ‘littering’ which doesn’t impress them and they huddle in a corner ignoring him until he says ‘and creating a nuisance!’ At this the fierce criminals allow him into their gang for the day. Next when the recruiting Sergeant asked if he has been rehabilitated, Arlo jumps around screaming ‘kill, kill, kill!’ Then he asks; ‘do I have to be moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug?’ He is excused on psychiatric grounds! It’s a fantastic anti Vietnam song; amusing and delighting over 19 minutes and if never heard there are many versions on YouTube with one of Arlo

performing it in the actual church from the song. In the movie Officer Obie actually plays himself as he figured it was better to make himself look a fool than an actor do it for him. Alice also plays a cameo role in the movie.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com VERY IMPORTANT: A NEW DIRECTIVE FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION MAKES IT NECCESARY FOR ENGLISH PEOPLE RESIDENT IN SPAIN TO REVISE THEIR SPANISH WILLS. Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish

law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: Due to the substantial changes that it introduces the directive allows up to August of 2015 for it to be in force and therefore giving all those affected (anyone national of a European Union country resident in another) time to have their wills changed accordingly. The sooner you make sure that your will is in order the better. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Andalucia since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid. For a short period of time leading up to 2007 he was also Honorary British Consul.

Bankia Triples Real Estate Sales in First Quarter

Bankia has tripled their number of properties sold in the first quarter of the year, reaching a total of 2,200 through to the end of March, compared with just 659 sold in the same period last year, reported El Mundo. The low number of properties sold in the first quarter of 2013 was primarily due to the entity just having completed the transfer of toxic assets to the Sareb, which began operating in late 2012, meaning the sales channels were still in their early stages. In view of these data, the entity estimates that the housing sector is beginning to level out, leaving behind its most severe adjustment phase. According to sources in the financial institution, after the last five years which have produced a strong adjustment, indicators are beginning to show “some slight stabilisation in demand which, together with the slowdown in the decline of developer activity, may be leading to a bottoming out and a stabilisation of activity levels”. However, these same sources indicate that although most of the price adjustments have already been carried out, “there is still room for correction”. Thus,

they estimate that, according to their forecasts, there will be “a small nominal adjustment in prices, of a slower manner, which will last until 2015, depending on the area”. “The key will be the impetus from foreign investment, as in the previous cycle”, they pointed out. Bankia highlighted the fact that the rate of absorption of the stock of unsold new homes is beginning to increase, although it is more due to the decrease in the number of completed new homes entering the market than an increase in demand. The bank’s portfolio of homes is made up of 70% apartments, 3.1% duplexes, 10.5% detached homes, 12.6% of terraced houses and 3.8% of individual family homes. By region, 27.7% of Bankia’s residential assets are located in the region of Valencia, 21.92% are in Catalonia, 13.44% in Madrid, 8.62% in Andalusia and 3.9% in Murcia. The remaining 25% of their residential assets are distributed among the other regions. Source: http://news.kyero.com/

SOLTIMES MAY 2014

www.soltimes.com

A Matter of Honour by Jeffrey Archer “The simple beauty of the golds, reds and blues left them both speechless. Neither of them had expected the icon to be so breathtaking.” I loved this Archer classic and felt that I was following the trials and tribulations of 007 instead of Captain Adam Scott. The story begins interestingly with the discovery that the painting of St. George and the Dragon, displayed in the Winter Palace, Leningrad for more than 50 years under heavy guard, is a fake. The treasures inside the palace have been carbon-dated and it is now known that this painting in question was done 500 years after Rublev’s original. Nicholas IInd, The Tsar’s traditional silver crown was not attached to the back of the frame. It was believed that the Tsar had secreted something valuable inside the icon, something so valuable that it would have guaranteed security for himself and his family. But it was hidden away for decades, undiscovered until 1966. The protagonist, Adam Scott has resigned his army commission after an exemplary career in distinguishing himself. He was awarded the Sword of Honour and was hopeful to join the Foreign Office. Action begins in Appleshaw, U.K. with the reading of his father’s will. A small, insignificant legacy is bequeathed to his mother, sister and Adam himself, expected but the biggest and strangest

surprise comes with an envelope stipulating that should he decide to open the envelope it must be on the condition that he will never divulge its contents to any living person. How mysterious. We discover that his father, Gerald had allegedly been a traitor. In his last posting he had responsibility for a number of senior ranking Nazis awaiting trial for war crimes: Hess, Doenitz, Speer and Goering. The night before Goering’s execution the Nazi officer had requested a private meeting with Gerald where he handed him an envelope hoping that this would compensate him for being held responsible for future events such as treachery. He was told it was a masterpiece and not to underestimate its value. Sadly, Gerald didn’t open or destroy the envelope so he didn’t benefit from Goering’s gift. The Nazi died from cyanide p o i s o n i n g immediately after this private meeting

and naturally, Gerald was held responsible for the suicide and dishonoured. Adam inherited the apparent sins of the father, hence his resignation from the army. Out of curiosity and with a sense of honour Adam opens the envelope hoping that his mother can benefit from the windfall. He discovers that Goering left his father the Tsar’s icon of St. George and the Dragon which is now rightfully his and thus he begins a perilous journey to Geneva to claim what is rightfully his. In true Archer style we meet the antagonist, a ruthless Russian KGB agent, capable of betraying his own father for his own advancement, lacking in moral scruples and extremely dangerous. He is given the commission of finding the original icon and returning it to its rightful ownersthe Russians. It’s not long before he crosses swords with Adam Scott. Adam is soon on the run when the newspaper headlines read: Englishman sought after German girl and Swiss taxi

driver murdered.” The Swiss police as well as English, Russian and American agents are on his tail, after his blood. Why is this icon so precious? All this espionage over a painting. Or is there more to it than meets the eye? Adam comes to realise that there is something much more valuable hidden inside the icon that justifies espionage and murder but what is it? Why do the Americans as well as the Russians and the British want to get their hands on it? Adam comes to realise that he can’t trust anyone and he has to face his adversary, Romanov, alone. Can he survive and more importantly, can he prove his father’s innocence in the death of Goering to restore his father’s honour posthumously? Prove the hero? SOLTIMES MAY 2014

Julie wasn’t wearing 2 (clue 3) so wasn’t wearing green (clue 6), Jane was wearing red (clue 1) and Josie wore yellow (clue 5), hence Julie wore blue, leaving Jackie wearing green wearing 2 (clue 6). As Jackie wore 2, she didn’t come 3rd (clue 2), and Jane came first (clue 1), which means that Jackie must have come 2nd in order to beat the girl wearing 3 (clue 5). We now know Jane won and Jackie was 2nd, therefore Julie must have come 3rd in order to beat the girl in yellow (clue 3), leaving Josie in last place. As Jackie came second and she beat the girl wearing 3 (clue 5), the girl wearing 3 must have come 4th (therefore Josie) as the girl wearing 1 came 3rd (clue 2). Julie (who is 3rd) wore 1 (clue 2), leaving Jane wearing 4. QED.

San Marzano tomato pizza

San Marzano tomatoes have dense flesh and a rich, sweet flavour. They are considered by many chefs to make the best tomato sauce, but good quality plum tomatoes could be substituted

Ingredients For the pizza dough 800g/1lb 14oz ‘00’ flour 200g/7oz semolina flour 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp caster sugar 14g/½oz dried yeast 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 650ml/1 pint 2fl oz water

For the topping 2 x 400g/14oz tins San Marzano tomatoes 2 large cow’s milk mozzarella balls, grated 3 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp peanut oil sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 large handful basil leaves

Preparation method 1. To make the dough, place the flours, salt, sugar and yeast into a large bowl and stir. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the water, gradually mixing in the flour to form a soft dough.

2. Tip out and knead on an oiled work surface for about 10 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place it into a bowl, cover and leave to rise for 24 hours. 3. Preheat the oven to its highest temperature. Place a heavy baking tray or pizza stone in the oven and allow it to heat. 4. Remove the dough from the bowl and knead for a couple of minutes, then divide into four pieces. Allow to rest for five minutes, then stretch each piece over your hands to form a disc about 5mm/¼in thick. 5. Place the circles of dough onto upturned floured baking trays or a pizza peel if you have one. 6. Place the tinned tomatoes into a food processor and blend to a purée. Spoon the tomato purée thinly over the pizzas, scatter over the grated mozzarella, then drizzle over the oils. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 7. Slide each pizza off the baking tray directly onto the heated baking tray or pizza stone in the oven and cook for 5 -10 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp. 8. To serve, scatter the basil leaves over the pizza and drizzle with a little more peanut oil.

By Martin Shortland Ask most people for directions to El Parador and they would struggle; it’s one of those places that’s hard to define, location wise. You wouldn’t call it a destination town. The literal translation of the word parador means inn or gambler; the town was named after the former rather than the latter and if there are any inns there nowadays, their hard to find. Although mistaken for a suburb of either Roquetas or Aguadulce, El Parador is a town in its own right, but one considered by residents of its more salubrious neighbours as being nothing more than an extension of their own metropolis. It’s true that defining where El Parador begins and ends is difficult; it blends seamlessly into Aguadulce and is only separated by a small gap with Roquetas. The history of this mostly modern conurbation is short. Its rapid growth has occurred – like Roquetas and Aguadulce – in the last forty years and like its two close neighbours, planning consideration was given scant regard by the profit hungry developers who swarmed across this region for the best part of twenty years. Their legacy is not for the feint hearted. Acres of ill conceived, badly designed and poorly constructed apartment buildings are scattered across the landscape like a rash, on this once desolate and largely uninhabited corner of Andalucia. Progress maybe, but at a cost. At a cost to the integrity of the people and their culture who lived here and more so to the generations that followed. When the road between Malaga and Almeria was no more than a rough track, there was a parador – an inn – situated amongst a small community of fishing families, close to the foot of the Sierra Gador. It was the final overnight stop for travellers making for Almeria and a welcome one. The onward journey,

although relatively short in distance was arduous, as the road wound its way up through the mountains before descending on the other side to the regional capital of Almeria. Roquetas in those days was an isolated fishing hamlet and Aguadulce was no more than a twinkle in the eye of the Great Creator. But somehow, El Parador came to be what it is today – somewhere you pass through on the way to somewhere else, without giving it a second thought. But now the City Council of Roquetas, through its deputy mayor Eloisa Cabrera, has announced quote, “A total and comprehensive renewal of the central neighbourhood.” At a press conference last week, she outlined the council’s major plans for the town saying, “We are looking at everything from the promenades, public spaces, urban routes and shopping areas.” She said the town had been neglected for many years and it is the intention of the council to bring it into the 21st century, adding, ”All areas of this vibrant community will be addressed in our modernisation and remodelling plans.” The council intends to offer the contract for the redesign to the winner of a competition, a scheme they have used before; most recently for the dynamic new market building in Roquetas and also for the park on the site of the old football stadium. As in the past, the competition will be judged by a panel consisting of the College of Architects in Almeria and members of the local council. The first local fiesta of the year – San Isidro - takes place in El Parador and starts today (14th May) and runs until Sunday. For fiesta lovers, all the usual attractions will be on show, from fairground rides, food in abundance, street stalls and a live music stage in the square in front of the church.

Sanctions Against Russia Could Harm Local Export Trade By Martin Shortland Growers Association said they were Figures released last week show a huge increase in the amount of locally grown produce exported to Russia. The data provided by the Association of Growers and Exporters shows an almost fourfold increase in trade in the last four years. In 2009, just under 5,000 tons of fruit and vegetables worth 4.6 million euros were exported; this year the figure is expected to reach 14,500 tons with a value of 14.7 million euros. But this news comes at a time when economic and trade sanctions are being considered by America and the UK, in response to the military action Russia has taken in the Ukraine, in order to allow Crimea to join the Russian Federation. It’s still unclear if Europe as whole, or individual nations will fall into line with the Americans; if and when they decide to impose sanctions. Juan Colomina, speaking for the

keeping an eye on developments, but at the moment, they ‘were not unduly concerned about the situation.’ The export market from the Almeria area is actually much larger than the report shows, but in an indirect way. The figures don’t include produce which is sold to Dutch wholesalers, who then redispatch the goods to Russia. Although the news regarding the large increase in exports is encouraging, there is a downside to the story and that concerns transportation. The 4,000 kilometre journey by lorry takes almost a week, which for perishables like fruit and vegetables, makes it a risky business. Mr. Colomino says the Association is looking at other quicker forms of transport, which will be vital if they are to expand the market further into Russia and other Eastern European countries.

“ARCHIE”

It is sad to report that after a short illness in Torrecardenas Hospital Archie has passed away. He leaves a devoted son Brian and family in New Zealand and many friends and associates here in Spain. After a hard life during WW2, latterly as a pilot in Burma and India, he then worked as a surveyor for McAlpine before taking over a Post Office in Glasgow. In the late 1970’s with wife Joyce he came to Roquetas and opened a restaurant which was well frequented by the stars making movies in the surrounding area of Almeria. From a young age Goff was always an important part of his life and became a good low handicap golfer. He joined Playa Serena GC as one of the first non Spanish members and was instrumental with his Spanish Golfing friends setting up the Saturday golfing section which concluded each week in Bar Javi. He was awarded Life Membership of Playa Serena but he played very little from this time. Following the death of his wife (Joyce) and the increasing inability to play golf he moved to A Cortijo in Santa Fe with a terrace overlooking the fertile valley facing the pueblo of Gador. He had good support of neighbour Casi and exceptional friends Roy and Irene (ex of the Fluffy Duck) together with the visits from ex golfing colleagues from Roquetas. Always the first topic of conversation would be related to the golf course, to the very end Archie was a devoted member of Playa Serena GC a legend who will be sorely missed.

SOLTIMES MAY 2014

www.soltimes.com

Shrek’s Jacket Trustingly I entered the chemically perfumed emporium that is the Albox Tintorería and relinquished Pete’s very nice suede jacket into the care of the boss/receptionist/chief cleaning technician/ cook and bottle-washer, who stated that it would be ready in a week. Or maybe 10 days. I gave him a fortnight, which to a Spaniard is about 10 days. Once more I braved the unique odour that is common to all dry-cleaners, and was greeted with a merry Hola as the boss/etc scurried into the nether reaches of the shop to fetch my jacket. Returning he proudly he held up for my inspection a faux suede sleeveless jacket which

had obviously been designed and worn by Shrek. ‘That’s not mine.’ I said. ‘Mine has sleeves.’ ‘Sleeves.’ He reiterated thoughtfully. ‘I have given it to someone else.’ Horror spread across his face like spilt milk across a tiled floor, and for a moment we stood, the image of the owner of the sleeveless monstrosity parading around Albox in Pete’s good suede jacket hanging between us like the ghost of Banquo. ‘Come back next week,’ he begged, nearly bursting with earnest entreaty. ‘I will get it back.’ Oh yeah, you and whose army? I thought. Any person who would fit the faux jacket is certainly not going to meekly hand it back with an ‘Oh, sorry.’ It’s finders keepers, losers weepers! ‘I need it by Sunday.’ I said, with no regard for his rising blood pressure, and the possibility of a nervous breakdown. Desperately he began searching through the josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

By Jos Biggs

rails of garments ready for collection. ‘I will find it. Give me an hour.’ I gave him an hour and a bit. On my return he was in front of the giant washing machine hopping from foot to foot as if he were a cat on a bed of nails. He wrenched open the door, grabbed the contents in his arms, and bore them headlong to the counter. Thrusting his hands into the centre of the tangled mass as if performing abdominal surgery on a giant squid, he extracted - Pete’s jacket! ‘Ten minutes.’ He begged, as all fingers and thumbs he endeavoured to straighten out the precious garment. I gave him 20. On my return he was all urbane composure. With a flourish he handed me the jacket, neatly hung and bagged in plastic. As he did so he sagely intoned ‘There are no problems which cannot be resolved, except death.’ He wasn’t thinking that just under an hour ago!

alqueria Of ball-bearings and exotic fruit John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Not all conflict in Alqueria is based on barrio rivalry. Take the case of Cartera Frederico, the bank manager and Dr Cortarduras the Newcomer’s GP. Both belonging to the Newcomer’s barrio, they haven’t been on speaking terms for almost three decades. It all started some thirty years ago when the good doctor was treating Rodriquez’s wife for a case of Goooin’s disease. This malady usually only affects ripening root vegetables, although there are obvious similarities. Dr Cortarduras had mentioned an investment opportunity, the Little Ball, Big Ball, Bigger Ball-Bearing factory of San Sebastián. At about this time Cartera Frederico had newly arrived in Alqueria and was keen to ingratiate himself with the olive mill owner, Rodriquez. Frederico’s career had not been spectacular, in fact he had been promoted sideways and sent to the most obscure sub-branch in Spain, Alqueria. It was hoped that here his incompetence would not be noticed and even if it was Alqueria was of little consequence. Cartera Frederico suggested an alternative stock that of the Icelandic Pomegranate and Calabashtree Plantation. Rodriquez went with the bank managers advice after all it was his territory. If you can cast your mind back to 1985 you may recall two events of international importance which profoundly effected Rodriquez’s shareholdings. First was the infestation of Waffenstuffen’s Weevil which killed off all exotic fruit production in and close to the Arctic circle. Second, the issue of ten wheeled rocket propelled roller-skates to all front line NATO

troops causing an unprecedented demand for ball bearings of all sizes. Rodriquez lost thousands. He moved his account to another bank and only dealt with Cartera Frederico when it involved other people’s money. Frederico blamed the Doctor personally for the Waffenstuffen’s Weevil infestation even suggesting that the medical man had bred the insects himself. He did however withdraw his comments following the threat of legal action. If they ever found themselves in the Bar La Golondrina at the same time the bank manager would say in an overly loud voice, “I have private medical treatment in Spain, I don’t trust these Alquerian butchers” or some similar rhetoric. Dr Cortarduras for his part had been spiking Frederico’s Remitroot Wine with a strong laxative for years. A condition which has cost the unsuspecting bank manager a small fortune to have treated privately in Almería. Which also explains why Frederico’s condition has defied all attempts of a cure and has made the front page of several medical journals. The depth of Alquerian discord and malcontent is certainly deep. No one is spared apart perhaps from Loco Paco, befriended by his imaginary pets, he is a threat to no one.

viewpoint

Truth or Fiction, It’s a Good Yarn I am wondering about Robin Hood at the moment. It’s just that having recently re-read ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ by Roger Lancelyn Green, I am confused as to just who Robin Hood really was. Where did he come from, was he really the hero that he is popularly portrayed as and indeed, did he really exist at all? I am also wondering where the heck the author’s parents dug up the name Lancelyn, but that’s another matter entirely. It seems strange that one of our best known English heroes and one who is recognised internationally, may be a fictional character based on a mixture of obscure figures who lived in various parts of England and who were often separated by a century or two. So I have done some digging of my own and come to the conclusion that I am even more confused than before. But it has thrown up some interesting things that are worth mentioning here. Take Little John. According to the legend, or at least one version of it, his real name was John Little and that contrary to the name, he was built like a Nottingham brothel. However I much prefer another less popular version of who John was and it’s one that appeals much more to my own bizarre imagination. In this one John is referred to as ‘little’ because he

By Colin Bird :

badbirdnow@gmail.com

stood not much more than four feet tall. It is said that they met at a crossing of one of the streams that ran through Sherwood, Robin on one side and John whatever his real name was, on the other. The only crossing was a bridge that consisted of a single felled tree, wide enough for only one person to cross, so with neither party wishing to give way to the other, they set-to with quarter staffs which resulted in Robin taking an early and unexpected bath. Why they couldn’t have waded across in the first place and avoided the confrontation is beyond me, as it becomes clear in most versions of this event, that the water was only knee deep. But there you go, it’s the old ‘my quarter staff is bigger than yours’ man thing. Or perhaps it’s simply the aversion to water that twelfth and thirteenth century people had. But in any event it would seem that the description of John Little as a giant, was put about by Robin to avoid the humiliation of being bested by a dwarf. Will Scarlet was so named, it is thought, because of his penchant to mince about in flamboyant red garments but if this was the case, then he would have stood out in the forest like a ham sandwich in a synagogue and been an easy target for the sheriff’s men. More plausible is the lesser known version that he had been afflicted with some nasty disease from foraging through medieval wheely bins in the streets looking for scraps of festering food, which had left him with a permanent fiery rash. It is telling that in many accounts, he is shunned by the other outlaws and left to take his meals alone in the camp.

Perhaps this is where the expression, ‘avoid like the plague’ originates. Robin’s followers are always referred to as the Merry Men. This could well have been the case because from the many candidates thought to have been the model for Maid Marion, there is one who was a notorious harlot of the day around the Nottingham area – Marion de Quickie. If there had been roundabouts then, she would surely have been a familiar face to the riders of passing horses and carts. So on the assumption that as a ‘friend’ of Robin, she would also have been well known to his troop of outlaws, it follows that they would have been a merry bunch indeed having at one time or another, probably made Marion. If you see what I mean. I can’t make up my mind about Friar Tuck. All the stories show him to have indeed been a friar and a man of God, but this is totally at odds with the fact that he spent most of his time necking strong ale, breaking the heads of Norman soldiers with a wicked looking staff that he carried, and breaking wind at the most inopportune times, such as the occasion when he was conducting a marriage ceremony for a local yeoman. But the theory about the whole Robin Hood legend that I like the most, is that in fact the band - as his followers were called - was precisely that and the Robin Hood Band were no more than popular entertainers of their day, playing at many weddings, cock fights and executions. Alas, after 700 years, we are never likely to know for sure.

Vital win for Almería The Andalusians took a giant step against Granada through goals from Verza and Aleix Vidal, though both teams will be fighting for survival on the final matchday. UD Almería earned an important 0-2 victory at the Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium against Granada CF on matchday 37 of the Liga BBVA. Francisco Rodríguez’s side now have 39 points and climb out of the relegation zone, though they will be fighting for survival on the final matchday, much like their opponents. The early stages were very evenly matched, but it was the visiting side who took the lead on the scoreboard. Seventeen minutes in, the referee awarded a penalty after a foul by Fran Rico on Verza inside the box. It was the midfielder from Alicante himself who converted the penalty to make it 0-1, lifting his team’s hopes for survival. The rojiblancos looked for the equaliser but Fran Rico, their most dangerous player in attack, came up against an impressive Esteban Suárez who prevented the home side from scoring before the break. After half time, Granada, knowing what was at stake, fought back but came up against well organised opponents who would not give up in their fight for survival. Brahimi and Ilori had the best chances in the second half, but they were unable to get past Esteban. In a crazy finish to the game, endto-end stuff, Almería looked for their second goal on the counter-attack, but it came through Aleix Vidal from the penalty spot. A crucial victory that keeps Almería alive in the Liga BBVA. For more local football follow @expatgoals on Twitter or visit www.expatgoals.com

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross First impressions matter. In business it is that care and attention to appearance, dress and general conduct that makes a lasting impression. The same can be applied to vehicles and that’s where Suzuki scores highly. From that first moment of opening the door and sitting in the driver’s seat I feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross. Bear in mind that I drive a lot of cars and yet Suzukis always stands out because they are all comfortable. I test the Suzuki during the worst weather for 100 years. At one point over 100,000 homes are without power and some unfortunate residents in Somerset have been without power since Christmas. Flooding is encountered on almost every route but my Japanese friend with its raised ride height is ideal in such situations. High winds and water logged roads ensure that it is nigh on impossible to exceed 60mph. Those gusting high winds do buffet the Suzuki but it feels confident enough. It is quite sluggish though especially on start up and so it is pleasing to find that it is equipped with a sport mode that really does liven things up. In fact it remains on this mode for most of the test because I find it gives it the oomph that I require. Interestingly it doesn’t affect fuel economy that much either with the vehicle still returning over 40mpg, which I’m quite impressed with considering it’s a 1.6-litre petrol. When the conditions become too slippery it is easy to turn the centre mounted dial to snow and mud mode, which is also extremely useful during the test. Some of the routes that I am most familiar with have been closed due to the floods and workmen try hard to remedy the situation. All this talk of climate

change being the problem and Queen Victoria reported similar circumstances in her diary many years ago. Whatever the reason, you’re grateful to be driving the SX4 S-Cross. The raised ride height, the permanent 4WD and the powerful windscreen wipers and washers make driving in these challenging conditions enjoyable rather than a chore. My two girls in the back quickly fall asleep and my wife Caroline finds her heated front seat comfortable. “I like the lemon fragrance to the windscreen wash,” she says, adding that sometimes it can be very overpowering requiring the windows to be wound down. The large glass panoramic roof makes the cabin feel light and airy and on just one of the days of the test the sun actually appears bringing the glass roof really into its own. I like the fact that the front part also has a tilting sunroof function. For me the driver’s seat could offer a little more lumbar support but the black leather seats are hardwearing and easy to clean, which is ideal when my two daughters are involved. Externally it’s a good looking vehicle with quite a striking front thanks to its bumper as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The black alloys are a neat touch, too. I like the power folding wing mirrors, which are always a welcome addition especially when parking on busy roadsides. We travel in the S-Cross to the funeral of Alison Fleuret, a dear friend, who died suddenly, leaving behind her husband and two young children. It is an absolutely devastating time but the satellite navigation makes the ordeal of going to this new destination

easier and I must say that this sat nav system is the easiest one I have come across. It’s simply a matter of tapping in the postcode and pressing ‘Go’ and a female voice talks you through the route. My only complaint is that the touch screen is far too sensitive for my thick fingers! The other problem is that the system doesn’t allow you to operate it while driving. It would be handy if there was a function to allow a passenger to operate it while the vehicle is being driven. On our return home we do notice that the steamed up windows take a long time to demist and that is with the blowers on full. If I was to buy one I would probably opt for a more conservative colour such as blue rather than the lime green of the test model. New price: £14,999 to £23,549 Facts at a glance: 0-60mph: 12secs Top speed: 108mph Economy: 40mpg

19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Thursday 8th May and Aguilon Golf Course hosted our Monthly Medal round. With good weather and no wind this looked like a good scoring formula. Our winner this month was Mark Danson who carded a nett 70, and claimed a Two on the 3rd. Harry Eels and Nick Pogson followed close behind in 2nd and 3rd places. In the Ladies medal Christine Dow claimed 1st place with a nett 77 from Beryl Aird. Geoff(The Dress) Smith looking very fetching in his latest colourful attire was impressive only in the dress sense, Geoff, looking more like a Tequila Sunrise than a golfer played more like a Tequila Sunrise!!. Peter Hodges had a pig of a day finding virtually every bunker on the course but made his day with two Nearest the Pins. prevention of, cardiovascular health problems. Although their website is published in Spanish only, many residents will already have benefited unwittingly from the work of this highly professional charitable foundation, who support and back up the health professionals.

Following-up on the best supported golfing event in Almeria of 2013, the organisers are pleased to announce that this year’s tournament will once again be played at ALBORAN GOLF, on Saturday 21st June. Steve was a well-known figure among the UK and Spanish golfing fraternity and his fatal heart attack at Desert Springs inspired more than 100 golfers to come together in a tournament designed to raise the profile of our sport in the Province. Sponsorship poured in from every golf course in Almeria, plus three in Murcia, as well as local businesses, Golf Societies and individuals, producing a prize-pot worth over €5,000. Such was the success of the day that most of these sponsors have already asked to be included this year, along with some new ones. The event brought together English and Spanish golfers and forged lasting friendships both on and off the course. Between the divisional winners, nearest the pin winners and card draw winners, almost everyone walked away with a prize of some sort, having had an enjoyable day’s golf with food & drink at the prizegiving.

As per last year there will be a 09.00 shotgun start and entry is once again only €35 which will include the green fee, trophies for 1st,2nd,3rd in all divisions, a host of prizes (for ‘nearest the pin’ etc), AND a buffet with beer, wine & soft drinks afterwards – the best golfing deal of the year!! Entry will open on Mon 2ndJune and early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. All players will also receive a small free information sheet (in English and Spanish) in a plastic wallet designed to fit in a golf bag on how to deal with a cardiac emergency. We are looking for a limited number of sponsors (see below), whose names/details/logos will appear on the sheet, with all proceeds going to the FEC appeal. New Home At Aquarium For Rescued Groupers Bravery Of Passer-by Saves experimental facility in Cadiz to see if they might be able to take the fish, he said, “It was not Man From Burning Car possible to return the fish to the wild as they had

By Martin Shortland In the next few days, a vehicle will deliver an unusual cargo of fish to the aquarium in Roquetas de Mar. The specially adapted lorry, equipped with temperature controlled water tanks, will transport the twelve fish from their home in Cadiz to their new quarters at the state of the art aquarium in the town. The fish are ten years old and along with twelve others, have been part of a long term experimental study on the breading of grouper. Normally the large fish would have been doomed to slaughter, but an enterprising vet who’d spent many of the ten years working with the animals, came up with the idea of relocating them to an aquarium. Enrique Hernandez, director of the aquarium explained the background to the story. He was approached by the medical director of the

spent their whole lives in captivity, treated with hormones and vitamins and other drugs.” He added, “These are fine healthy specimens and under the right conditions, will live for at least another 10 – 20 years.” The fish have only ever been used to living in aquarium tanks, so the move to Roquetas should not be a problem for them. They will spend the first month in quarantine in a special tank to ensure they are completely healthy and free from any parasitic infections which could be passed on to the other species. Groupers are a deep water fish in their natural habitat and have few enemies; sharks being possibly the only one, which in time the grouper will have to get used to, as there are over a hundred varieties at the aquarium. As Enrique Hernandez pointed out, “Although we have a very large and diverse collection of sharks here, the bull shark is the only species which could cause a problem for the groupers but I’m confident they will coexist quite happily.” The aquarium takes steps to combat the risk to other animals by controlling the water temperature; lowering the water temperature lowers the predatory animals natural instinct to hunt. There are 3,000 square metres of tanks containing over 2 million litres of water and within the next few weeks, the new residents will be on show to the public.

By Martin Shortland A collision between two vehicles could have ended in tragedy but for the bravery of a passing pedestrian. The accident happened last Friday evening near Aguadulce, when a Peugeot being driven towards Almeria crossed the carriageway and hit a Fiat Leon. The Peugot crashed through some roadside fencing and burst into flames. Diego Herrero was walking along the pavement with friends when the accident happened and immediately ran to the burning car to help the driver. He was unable to open the door of the car, so smashed the window and tried to pull the driver out. The fire at the rear of the vehicle was taking hold and making it very dangerous. The driver’s seatbelt would not release, but with the help of another man who appeared at the scene, the two rescuers managed to drag the driver out of his car through the window. Although the driver was conscious at the time of his rescue, police have said his life was undoubtedly saved by the two men as he would not have been able to free himself. He was treated at the scene for a bad head injury and cuts to his face and legs and then taken to hospital in Almeria, as were the two men who rescued him. They were both treated for the effects of smoke inhalation and one received stitches to a hand injury from the broken window. The occupants of the other car, two women and a male driver, received minor injuries and were released from hospital after treatment. The driver of the burnt vehicle was detained overnight for observation.
