Court acquits Trabalon & halts demolition of 12 homes
Not guilty is the verdict from the Audiencia Provincial de Almería. Ex Mayor of Zurgena has had charges and his sentence of 21 months in jail dropped in connection with the illegality of 12 houses in the Los Carasoles village of Zurgena. The ruling clarified that all reports into the ex Mayor Candido Trabalon an architect and the clerk of works found no evidence of wrong doing in the process and building of the said 12 houses. The judgment states that the council had “Acted in full accordance with technical reports” and that the site “was eligible to be considered urban”. The court also reversed the conviction against Manuel Tijeras who voted in favor of granting a construction license for the site, the promoter along with the construction manager Antonio LR and Manuel MC have also been granted reprieve after the initial 21 months prison sentence plus fines of 24 months at €50 per day. The ruling comes as a great relief for the families whos houses have been under scrutiny for many months and years, many of the home owners are British and had bought
in good faith are now free to live life without worry in the instance. Luis Diaz the current independent Mayor of Zurgena shared “joy for families living with us” and that “finally justice has been done.” “Since I became the Mayor we wanted to solve the problem and the injustice faced by many of our citizens of British origin by urban problems and we have not stopped working even one day in that direction” The current councillor of Public Works, Cándido Trabalon (PA), has expressed “great satisfaction” at what he considers a “very positive for the town of Zurgena, especially for those families living in homes on the judgment by weighing demolition and for those who were accused. “ “We should never have been charged” expressed the municipal councilor in Zurgena.

APSA charity Fashion Show June 5th
The APSA volunteers are working hard to prepare for the summer fashion show at the Tennis Club in Albox on Thursday 5th June. Sue, who is organising the event, is busy selecting the new and nearly-new clothes and putting the models through their paces! There will be a fashion show and auction on the covered terrace at the Tennis Club and plenty of opportunity to buy clothes and accessories in all sizes - from crops and t-shirts to cruise and evening wear. The event is always a sellout and local businesses, have, as usual, been very generous in donating raffle prizes - from restaurant and petrol vouchers to gifts and coupons for local food stores and hairdressers. All proceeds will go towards the new kennels. Tickets are on sale now, €6 from the APSA shop in Avenida Lepanto, opposite Jacks in Albox, open 10 to 2pm Monday to Saturday. You may like to reserve a table for you and your friends. There will be cava on arrival, food is available and a good time will be had by all - for relaxing clothes shopping with friends is an ideal way to spend an early evening in June!

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION IN SPAIN MOJACAR BRANCH BIKATHON
After months of planning, 11th May arrived with Chief Marshals Mike Wilde & Stuart Judd - having ensured the drinks & food area, bouncy castles and cycle track were all in place - welcomed the many stallholders arriving waiting to trade their bric-abrac, cakes, books, greetings cards and an RBL Tombola. Over 500 folk visited the venue at the Acuatico Parque & Consum supermarket car-park. The riders began registering with the Track Marshals and were off to a flying start. Such an assortment of sponsored teams from the ‘young persons’ who cycled with ease to the other end of the scale, the oldest cyclist was Mojacar Branch’s President Mick Coote who proudly announced the 28 laps of the
circuit he completed as ‘not bad for an olden’ wait ‘til the grandkids get word of this. Jan Knight of the RBL team had the misfortune of the chain coming off her bike after only just one lap, however, she was able to continue on an alternative bicycle which despite being rather small enabled her to complete the 20
minute timescale. Lady Ellen, Tony Justice, Brian Dee & Dave Sharp gave their services free of charge and provided music throughout the day entertaining the spectators who chose to enjoy the hottest day so far of the year with a cool drink from the bar from onsite Restaurant Laguna listening to sounds of yesteryear & cheering on their teams. Eileen Huard, the Branch Fundraising Officer, responsible for almost single-handed organising the event commented that all the hard work of the last couple of months had been worthwhile and that she hoped the funds raised would help those members of the armed forces who were in need.

Donna must leave her foster home
DONNA, a four year old gentle, serene dog will soon have to leave her foster home. The cuddly, cosy world in which she now lives will soon be left behind and she will have to go back to the harsh reality of the shelter, unless someone offers her a forever home. It will be particularly hard for her, because she knows what it is like to live in a proper home and she will miss it terribly. It is perhaps even harder for her than a dog that has not known anything but the shelter or the street.
DONNA is LEISHMANIOSIS positive but does not show any symptoms She gets along well with other dogs and cats and her calm nature has a calming effect on other dogs that are easily frightened, or of an unstable character. She walks well on a leash and is a wonderful companion. Looking at her, happily surrounded by her toys or walking on the beach, surely nobody can be indifferent to the hardship that a return to the shelter would mean to her. However, it is not too late to spare DONNA from this fate if you offer her a place in your home. If you would like to know more about the shelter at SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR, or want to help in some way, please email Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail. com

Large Adventure Park To Open Near Roquetas By Martin Shortland
If you read the 2nd April edition of Sol Times, then you may or may not have believed my report on the proposed new airport for Roquetas, in the area known as Las Salinas. It was an April fool spoof, just in case you really believed it. But now, a real story is emerging concerning a new development taking place on the very same piece of land - believe me! A consortium of local entrepreneurs is planning to open a themed adventure park in the Spring of next year. Totem Park will be the first of its kind in this area and possibly the first in southern Spain. It’s based on a well known formula which originated in South America and has spread around the world. Covering an area of 8,000 square metres, the park will contain a series of games and sports circuits with zip wires and climbing frames reaching up to 10 metres in height. The courses will vary in degree of difficulty and will be suitable for children and adults. Also included on the site will be a toddlers play area and a cafeteria. Large parts of the attraction will be covered, providing welcome shade during the hot summer months and will be floodlit at night offering what the promoters describe as, “an alternative night time occupation for the young people of the region.” They also intend it to be of practical use to schools and colleges as part of the national curriculum training scheme. Safety is clearly a major issue at such leisure parks and the latest standards will be adhered to: each participant will be hooked to a safety harness attached to a cable which can only be detached when they leave the course. Stewards will patrol the site giving advice and assistance where required. The cost of the venture is around 300,000 euros, half of which will be funded by a grant from the regional small business development agency. The promoters are also hoping to receive further help with advertising the project through the local tourist board. They intend to employ up to twenty people when it opens next year.

A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Strokes are a medical emergency and prompt treatment is essential because the sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen. If you suspect that you or someone else is having a stroke, phone 112 or the Angels 24hr Call Centre immediately and ask for an ambulance. The main symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the word FAST: Face-Arms-Speech-Time. • Face – the face may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile or their mouth or eye may have dropped • Arms – the person with suspected stroke may not be able to lift one or both arms and keep them there because of arm weakness or numbness • Speech – their speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake • Time – it is time to dial for help immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms . Why do strokes happen? Like all organs, the brain needs the oxygen and nutrients provided by blood to function properly. If the supply of blood is restricted or stopped, brain cells begin to die. This can lead to brain damage and possibly death. Types of stroke There are two main causes of strokes: • ischaemic (accounting for over 80% of all cases) – the blood supply is stopped due to a blood clot • haemorrhagic – a weakened blood vessel supplying the brain bursts and causes brain damage There is also a related condition known
UK Registered - Treating
as a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), where the supply of blood to the brain is temporarily interrupted, causing a ‘mini-stroke’. TIAs should be treated seriously as they are often a warning sign that a stroke is coming. Preventing strokes and Heart attacks! The best way to prevent a stroke or heart attack is to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and avoid smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol. Diet A poor diet is a major risk factor. High-fat foods can lead to the buildup of fatty plaques in your arteries and being overweight can lead to high blood pressure. A low-fat, high-fibre diet is recommended, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (five portions a day) and whole grains. You should limit the amount of salt you eat to no more than 6g (0.2oz) a day because too much salt will increase your blood pressure. Six grams of salt is about one teaspoonful. There are two types of fat – saturated and unsaturated. You should avoid food containing saturated fats because these will increase your cholesterol levels. Foods high in saturated fat include: • meat pies • sausages and fatty cuts of meat • butter • ghee – a type of butter often used in Indian cooking • lard • cream • hard cheese • cakes and biscuits • foods that contain coconut or palm oil. However, a balanced diet should include a small amount of unsaturated fat, which will help reduce your cholesterol levels.

Foods high in unsaturated fat include: • oily fish • avocados • nuts and seeds • sunflower, rapeseed, olive and vegetable oils. Exercise Combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is the best way to maintain a healthy weight. Having a healthy weight reduces your chances of developing high blood pressure. Regular exercise will make your heart and blood circulatory system more efficient. It will also lower your cholesterol level and keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. For most people, at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (i.e. cycling or fast walking) every week is recommended. Smoking Smoking doubles your risk of having a stroke or heart attack. This is because it narrows your arteries and makes your blood more likely to clot. If you stop smoking, you can reduce your risk of having a stroke or heart attack by up to half. Not smoking will also improve your general health and reduce your risk of developing other serious conditions, such as lung cancer and heart disease. Alcohol Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to high blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation). Both are major risk factors for stroke and heart attacks Because alcoholic drinks are rich in energy (high in calories) they also cause weight gain. Heavy drinking multiplies the risk of stroke by more than three times.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Portable or Fully Install? It’s a bit like asking whether your want your eggs fried or boiled (do you remember that advert?). There are, currently, only 2 choices. You do know that I’m actually talking about the choice between fully installing a program onto your computer or just having a portable version, Don’t you? Does it make that much difference whether you choose a fully functional version of the program that will work off a memory stick or have the more traditional method of doing a complete install? “Horses for courses” as my Dad always said (something I didn’t understand until I had to write a program to calculate the odds at horse racing – It wasn’t too bad, 7 from 10 placed and 4 of them winners! My dad is a great teacher!). To start with, maybe we should look at the real differences between the 2 options. Historically, Microsoft in days gone by, would put all the files that were needed to run a program, in a single folder (properly known to us “old school” farts as ‘Directories’). It was then clear where everything was, and extremely easy to see what, if anything, had been accidentally removed / renamed or corrupted. Them were the days when the computer started with a black screen and “C:>” in white letters – aagh nostalgia! Today, everything has a place to go to and only Windows knows exactly where! This is, without a doubt, a blessing. Albeit in disguise, as it means that you can get on and use the computer as the tool it is. The originator’s name for this convoluted method of separation has long been forgotten, but the legacy lives on. So, what are the benefits and drawbacks of each of the methods and what made me consider this
particular topic? First the benefits! Using this method of separation, files are stored in a method that encourages efficiency for the system. Linux / Unix and assorted cousins have used a simplified method that is similar for 50 years for the same reason. Having said that, the current Windows NTFS (New Technology File System) has, by far, the best specifications for storage of quantity (even better than my beloved Linux Ext4 file system). Using this method reduces the need for defragmentation and therefore increases the lifespan of the hard drive! The drawbacks are few but the most noticeable one is the fact that you will always need the master install disk for any software that you use on your computer. For example, if you cannot do without your beloved Microsoft Office (actually a fine piece of software), then should you lose it through hardware failure, system upgrade and Grandchildren messing things up, you can not recover it without the original master disk(s)! A singular drawback that is a result of the efficiency of the system, like so many other things computer, is that it is difficult of us mere mortals to understand clearly. I have just upgraded a computer from XP to 7 and the owner wanted me to ‘Transfer’ their copy of MS Office to the new system and had some difficulty understanding that this wasn’t possible. Fortunately, they have the original CD to hand and will be able to do it themselves in less than 20 minutes over a coffee :-) Anyway, time for me to get off. You know how to get hold of me and where I’ll be. See you there. Have a great weekend in this glorious sun.

Roland Garros Inspiration has many sources for my weekly scribbling’s; the impending French Grand Slam tennis tournament lead my dear wife Katherine to mention she needed some facts to Twitter out as part of her job at William Hill. So quicker than a ferret up a drainpipe I delved into the short but incredible history of Roland Garros. Born in 1888 on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, Roland Garros initially wanted to be a concert pianist, studying music in Paris. When he went to the Reims Air show in 1909 the flying bug bit him. He took flying lessons and earned pilot licence no.147 in 1910. This was the beginning of powered flight; only a few years earlier in 1903 the Wright brothers had flown and steered their heavier than air Flyer for the very first time. Garros joined the Moisant International Flying Circus; he performed extensively in North America including Mexico in 1911 for President Diaz. It was a sales demonstration to show planes were perfect for reconnaissance. Mexican troops took cover and Garros successfully located them
braben’s blog... Sandwiched Out !
Last Tuesday, around lunchtime, something happened to me that hasn’t happened for, well, let’s say quite some time! In fact, I must admit that I was beginning to think I’d never experience the thrill of it again. You guessed it…I had an idea. Oh, sorry, were you on a different page then? The idea was just a fleeting thing at first, you know, just sort of skulking in the corners of my brain, dodging any attempt to make itself known. So I did what I often do at times like this-lunchtimes that is-I decided to make a sandwich. And it was this decision that made me realise what my idea was. A sandwich in a can! You see, it’s not that I am unable to make a sandwich, it’s just that, well, I can’t be bothered with the job of throwing it all together and then doing that clearing up thing afterwards. Yes, I know that sounds awful but, well, a King Sized Snickers does have its merits as a quick lunch, not least of these is the total lack of any dishwashing. And it is here that my sandwich in a tin made an entrance. Why not, I reasoned, have a sandwich, ready made, in a can. Perfect for those with busy lives. Perfect at work when you haven’t had time to make lunch the night before. Perfect for lazy lumps who simply can’t be bothered with the hassle of making sandwiches some-most!-days. That’s when I resolved to develop a sandwich in a can. What an idea. You can imagine my excitement as I daydreamed of the small fortune my new idea would make. I was sure that this giant leap for the sandwich makers of the World would lead to at least millionaire status for me! Then disaster. It has already been done. What a cheek, someone stole my idea even before I had it. Criminal. An American chap invented the Candwich over 10 years ago and has done jolly well out of it thank you. The rotten thing has made a ton of money selling BBQ Chicken, Pepperoni Pizza and Peanut Butter and Jelly Candwiches. Well there’s nothing left for it now, it’s back to the drawing board for that brilliant idea. I know, how about a talent show where nobody has any talent and all the judges are painful bores-oh that’s been done too has it? Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

from the air. Garros took part in the world’s first endurance races; flying from Paris/London/ Paris he took second place. He also took part in a Paris-Madrid race. In Tennessee in 1912 he set an altitude record reaching 16,240 feet and smashing the previous record by over 2000 feet. The air was so thin the engine stalled yet he managed to glide safely back down to earth. In 1913 Garros made the first successful non-stop flight across the Mediterranean; he flew 500 miles from Frejus in Provence to Bizerte in Tunisia. Ironically when WWI broke out Garros was in Germany teaching military aviation. He flew at night to Switzerland then to France where he joined a French squadron nicknamed The Storks. At the beginning of the war planes were used for observation and opposing pilots if they met each other shook their fists at each other and glared menacingly. Later they took up bricks to drop on each other, revolvers were next. Natural escalation meant machine guns were then mounted on the sides
of the flimsy aircraft. The problem was that it was impossible to fire straight ahead as the propeller would be destroyed. Roland Garros had the idea of fitting steel deflectors on the blades to protect them from the bullets and mounted a machine gun behind. On April fool’s day 1915 he became the first person to shoot a plane down using a front mounted machine gun. Over the next fortnight he shot down four more German planes. An American Newspaper first used the term ‘Ace’ to celebrate his 5 kills. Garros’s luck soon ran out and he was forced to crash land behind enemy lines. He was captured before he could finish destroying his plane and he was interned as a POW. The deflectors were copied and added to German planes. Fokker also examined the aircraft as he was already working on a more efficient machine gun. Fokker’s ‘interrupter gear’ synchronised the firing of the machine gun to the turning of the propeller. It was added to German
fighter planes 3 months later with devastating effect. Garros managed to escape from the POW camp on Valentine’s Day 1918. He re-joined the French Army and flew again and had more kills. Then on October 5th a month before the end of hostilities, he himself was shot down and killed by German Ace Hermann Habich. It was the day before his 30th birthday. 10 years earlier whilst studying in Paris, Roland Garros regularly played tennis at the club which, in 1920 was named in his honour!

Legal Matters
Help for Expats in Spain
How do I validate a UK document?
You get a UK public document ‘legalised’ by asking the UK government to confirm that a UK public official’s signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine. Such a certification is called an Apostille. It is an international certification comparable to a notarization and is often added to documents that have been in some manner signed by a Notary, lawyer or other public official such as the clerk of a court of record in their official capacity. You might need to do this if a local authority in Spain has asked you to provide a document and they’ve said it must be legalised. How to get a document legalised without too much effort? This is the 21st century… GO ONLINE (www.gov.uk) 1. Check your document can be legalised. 2. Pay online for the service - it costs £30 per document, plus postage. 3. Complete the legalisation application form. 4. Send your documents, application form, a blank A4-sized envelope

LEGAL CORNER
WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com VERY IMPORTANT: A NEW DIRECTIVE FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION MAKES IT NECCESARY FOR ENGLISH PEOPLE RESIDENT IN SPAIN TO REVISE THEIR SPANISH WILLS. Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish
law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: Due to the substantial changes that it introduces the directive allows up to August of 2015 for it to be in force and therefore giving all those affected (anyone national of a European Union country resident in another) time to have their wills changed accordingly. The sooner you make sure that your will is in order the better. Michael Davies. Abogado.
Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Andalucia since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid. For a short period of time leading up to 2007 he was also Honorary British Consul.

The desire amongst British people to own an overseas home, in particular along the Spanish Costas, has surged in 2014, according to statistics from the Overseas Guides Company, who saw a 20 per cent year-on-year hike in enquires about foreign property ownership in the first three months of the year.
market amongst British buyers. The pound’s ongoing strength since the start of 2014 and the UK’s booming housing market and buoyant economy will have contributed to such a bullish first quarter. The unprecedented amount of rain and flooding we suffered in January will also have spurred people on to invest in a bolt-hole somewhere sunny.
The Overseas Guides Company, a free resource for overseas property-buyers, attracted 11,590 online enquiries, in the form of downloads of its free Buying Guides, during the first quarter (Q1) of 2014, compared to 9,685 in Q1 2013. Encouragingly, the first three months of 2014 were also busier than Q3 2013, historically the busiest period of any year, when 10,518 downloads were recorded.
“We see no signs of this slowing down, especially with the pound at a 16-month high against the euro – £1 was worth just €1.14 for a period back in August, but after steadily climbing it’s hovering around €1.22.”
“What was especially notable was Spain being more popular than France, typically the most dominant country for enquiries” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of The Overseas Guides Company. “This would indicate a return of confidence in the Spanish

Breaking the figures down further, January recorded the highest level of enquiries during Q1, namely 5,196 compared to 3,310 in February and 3,084 in March. Meanwhile, Spain and Ireland stood out as countries that attracted more enquiries in Q1 2014 than any quarter during 2013, although the generic enquiries with no specified country saw the largest year-on-year jump.

film review
“ It’s not the children she comes to save. It’s their father. It’s YOUR father, Travers Goff.” Walt Disney had a testy relationship with author P.L.Travers, a pen name for Helen Goff. He was unflattering in his remarks concerning the writer of the Mary Poppins’ series. He used curmudgeonly and uncompromising, prim and sexagenarian. The film was inspired by true events and Emma Thompson’s depiction of Travers shows what an irritable, difficult person she was to work with. Disney approved the following lyrics parodying Pamela’s negativity: “My world was calm, wellordered, exemplary, then came this person, with chaos in her wake, And now my life’s ambitions go with one fell blow. It’s quite a bitter pill to take.” Eight books were written in the Mary Poppins’ series between 1934 to 1988. Walt Disney’s own daughters loved the series so much that he ( played by Tom Hanks) promised them he would make a movie out of the series. It took him 20 years before he achieved his ambition to obtain the screen rights to her books. In 1961 Travers is living in London, struggling financially. Diarmuid Russell, her agent advises her to go to Walt Disney’s studios to meet Disney. She is reluctant. If she agrees to his proposition it will mean the end of her financial worries. Most of the action covers those two turbulent weeks in Los Angeles revealing more of a petulant child than a friendly, sociable professional. Her scorn and disdain was evident with the team. She admitted that the only American she liked was her chauffeur! The film tries to show us some insight into her reluctance and unwillingness to allow Disney to use animation and to point the accusing finger at the father, Mr Banks. We see frequent flashbacks of the young Helen growing up in Allora, Queensland
Saving Mr Banks
very close to her father, Travers Robert Goff (played by Colin Farrell) an alcoholic. She was devastated by his death and her mother’s attempt to commit suicide. Mr Banks draws strong parallels with her own father and Travers had problems with how Banks was going to be depicted. Once Disney realises just how personal the Mary Poppins’ stories are to Travers he opens up to her about his own difficult childhood. When she refuses to sign she leaves L.A. and returns to London. Disney is so determined that he follows her to London and persuades her to change her mind. “George Banks and all he stands for will be saved. maybe not in life, but in imagination. Because that’s what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again.” By saving or redeeming the father, Mr Banks, it was just like cherishing the memory of her own father and saving his reputation. The project goes ahead and Travers invites herself to the American premiere with very mixed feelings. Initial scorn is soon replaced by dismay when she sees Dick Van Dyke dancing with the penguins and we see her crying her heart out at the end; George Banks’ redemption has a powerful
and personal significance to her. Critics believed it may have been a show of anger towards the treatment of her characters and the sense of betrayal. Others believe it was the sadness of losing her own father. Annie Rose Buckley plays the young Travers, a delightful child, happy and imaginative until she becomes serious and worried over her father. Meryl Streep was the first choice although no-one could have portrayed her as well as Emma Thompson who described her as complex and full of contradiction, a very sad woman. She admitted to finding the role one of the most difficult she has had to act and yet she received a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an SAG award for her role. The film romanticizes the Disney-Travers relationship. A proposed sequel did not materialize before Disney’s death in 1966. Travers refused to allow any of the other books in the series to be adapted by the Walt Disney Company. The film was director by John Lee Hancock ( The Blind Side ) and shot at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. At the end of the film a surviving reading of the actual sessions between Travers and the team is played out. Winds in the east, mist coming in, like something is brewing, about to begin, can’t put my fingers on what lies in store, but I feel what’s to happen, all happened before. pause for thought I recently read an account of an elderly American Indian, who, when asked by his grandson about the conflict and discord in the world today, reflected for a moment and then replied, “My child, there are two dogs battling within my heart. One is full of anger, hatred, and rage. The other is full of love, forgiveness, and peace.” The old man paused, and he and his grandson sat for a moment in silence. Finally the boy spoke, “Grandfather, which dog will win the battle in your heart? The one filled with hatred or the one filled with love?” The old man looked at his grandson and replied, “The one I feed will win.”’ A poignant story, but one with lessons we should all take to heart. For all of us, if we’re honest, have those two dogs battling within. We all, I’m sure, know times when we’re filled with love and a willingness to forgive others. But we all, no doubt also know times when anger and hatred take over our lives. And so the question is “which of these sides of our personality do we feed?” for that is the side most likely to win in that inner battle. How easy it is for us to feed our hearts with resentment and anger when others belittle or hurt us. And how much damage that causes as we become increasingly the slaves of that anger. Yet how much better and more at peace with ourselves we would feel if only we could instead feed our hearts with love and forgiveness in such circumstances, learning from the incredible example of Jesus. For even when suffering the most dreadful of deaths, his final words were of forgiveness, not revenge as he said “Father forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.” So let’s pray that like him, we may never seek retaliation against those who insult us, nor revenge against those who hurt us, but leave all in the hands of God the true and perfect judge. Number Of Lifeguards Increased For Summer Season

Open 9am – 6pm (closed Tuesday)
the beach front location near the Hotel Zoraida Gardens in Calle Maracaibo.
Last week I reported that the Roquetas City Council has invested 500,000 euros in new beach cleaning machinery, along with a selection of new vehicles for the police force. The 15 kilometres of beaches are cleaned daily as well as pathways, toilets and public areas; all in keeping with the stringent standards required in order to gain – and hold on to - the coveted Blue Flag. The water quality is also checked on a daily basis and specially adapted boats collect any rubbish from the sea. The flag is only granted to local and beaches whose authorities allied facilities are of the highest level. Roquetas is one of only four municipalities in Andalucia to be able to fly the blue flag; three authorities were downgraded this year. The flags are flown from all council properties and importantly during the summer, from all the lifeguard stations along the beaches. of Foundation European The Environmental Education is the group responsible for setting the standards and monitoring the performance levels of every authority. Their inspectors were in Roquetas in April, shortly before the annual announcement of the awards was made. This will be the fifth consecutive
year Roquetas has held the award and the council intends to do all it can to maintain the very highest standards. The season officially begins on the first of June and ends at the end of September. This year will see an increase of five in the number of lifeguards to twenty six. Many of the lifeguards from previous seasons will be returning, but the council is looking to recruit additional members as well. It’s a highly specialised job and all applicants must have the relevant lifesaving certificates. Working alongside the lifeguards will be a fifty strong team of volunteers from the Civil Protection Organisation. Their role is to patrol all the beachside areas and they provide a valuable service to the thousands of holiday makers who use the beaches every day. They are the first point of contact with the public, giving help and assistance where needed and also liaising with the police and ambulance services in case of emergencies. There are special facilities located along the beaches for people with disabilities; these include changing rooms, toilets, shaded resting areas and showers with seats. The areas all have easy access via board walks and trained staff are on duty at all times. For more information on this service, visit the council website: ayuntamientoroquetas.es

table, so I got up and confronted him, eyeball to eyeball over the counter, and politely but emphatically commanded our order. ‘Impossible.’ He replied. ‘Not on that table. You must sit over there. There are no seats available, so you must wait until someone leaves.’ Before I could ask him whether he had ever worked in a hotel called Fawlty Towers, our friends, who were sitting at an ‘acceptable’ table, called us over to share, so he had to serve us, like it or not! However, it must have rankled – next morning we entered the very large and almost empty dining room for the buffet breakfast, and chose a table set up for 2, mid-room. Our bottoms had hardly made contact with the chairs when he swooped up. ‘You can’t sit here. You must sit over there.’ We sat over there, it

simply was not worth the effort to ask ‘Why? It’s a buffet, and the table is laid up, so what difference does it make?’ The next evening we gave him a break – we ate out! The following morning, having given him a chance to mellow, we entered the breakfast room and scanned it for a non-controversial table at which we might sit without incurring his displeasure. As we stood, indecisive, he sailed up to Pete, and greeted him with a suave ‘Good morning, Mr Connor.’ If he was intending to direct us to a table he was a beat too late – Pete had already set course for a table at which our friends were seated, and which was, presumably, ‘acceptable’, so he turned his attention to me. ‘Good morning, lady.’ I favoured him with the sort of smile that a large crocodile gives a small crocodile, just before it pinches the small crocodile’s lunch, and followed in Pete’s wake, a tender to his battleship!
Don’t Cross Me, I’m Special Forces
Driving the relatively short distance from Playa Flamenca post office to home the other day, I encountered people on every single one of the many pedestrian crossings en route. This is unusual but not a problem, I am happy to stop as often as required. I do it with good grace and with a smile on my face; after all I am rarely in a hurry and have time on my hands to spare most of the time. But it illustrated in a small way just how most Brits are different from many of our foreign cousins. My first stop was for a tall lady dressed in a revealing tee shirt and tight sporty cut-offs bearing a Volvo motif. She had long blond hair plaited like a braided loaf and wore puzzlingly, what looked like fingerless driving gloves. She had an impressive physique with muscular arms and thighs and walked with the aid of two ski poles. I was guessing Scandinavian - I have an uncanny instinct for accurately spotting these things – and she strode across the road, pausing only to glare at me with a look that said, ‘Rev that engine and I’ll strangle you with your own intestines’. Only a hundred metres further on, I encountered a Spanish man carrying a briefcase and with a mobile phone glued to his ear. He wore a polo shirt and

jeans that looked as if they had seen better days, so obviously a business man, or council official, or doctor maybe. I received another scowl before he crossed in front of me and I started to wonder whether it was my car that seemed to attract so much disfavour, after all I was showing no impatience or bad humour. In fact I was thinking pleasant thoughts about how to spend the money I was going to win on Euro Millions that evening, having stopped off and purchased five lucky dips. With such a level of investment, I was bound to come up trumps. It was a different matter a bit further on when three young Chinese men, positively sprinted across the road as if their life depended on it. Perhaps they’d had a bad experience at some time in the past when a Spanish shop keeper who was brassed off with yet another Chinese emporium opening up in his territory with the unfair competition that comes with it, tried to run them down. But for whatever reason, they were gone in a flash, leaving the stripey asphalt smoking – I had hardly brought the car to a halt. On the next three crossings, there were groups of people, who honoured me with looks that ranged from disdain to outright aggression, including one shaven headed moron who favoured me with an extended tongue, which I noticed had a piece of shrapnel embedded in it. Obviously a war wound picked up in a bar somewhere. In all cases and unlike the Chinese athletes, they moved across the road at the pace of English trains when there are non-approved leaves on the line. To say
it was leisurely would be a serious misappropriation of the English language; I half expected some of them to set up a table and start dispensing drinks and sandwiches. It seemed to represent a statement of complete contempt for the motorists who had come to a halt on both sides of the road, and even a veiled challenge . . . ‘Go on, ‘onk yer ‘orn if you fink you’re ‘ard enough!’ Or whatever the translation would be. I had decided to give my air-con a rest and had my windows down, so with the exception of super tongue, I knew they were not Brits. I am not an expert, but the chatter sounded vaguely Eastern European to me, although it could have been Tibetan for all I knew, but the sight of strange tattooed writing in Cyrillic letters on some of the forearms of one of the groups, had me thinking of ex-Russian Spetsnaz special forces. I was already on the run from the Triads for taking a faulty light bulb back to our local Oriental bazaar and demanding my money back, so I was not going to add to my troubles by upsetting these men with muscles in their spit. On the final crossing before home, an elderly couple were waiting patiently on the side of the road, so of course I brought the car to a stop and signalled with a wave that they could cross, and as they did so they smilingly waved back, with the lady mouthing the words, ‘Thank you.’ They were Brits of course. And by and large I have found this to be true; that it is invariably us older Brits who show our appreciation for courtesy rendered.

You Can’t Sit There The barman queried with a drawl ‘whaddya want, lady?’ I glanced round quickly, fearing that I had slipped through a time/space warp and landed in a Clint Eastwood western, but was reassured to find that I was still in the Hotel Macia Alfaros in Córdoba in the year 2014. Having ordered we sat ourselves at the only free table, on the left hand side of the half hectare of floor space that is the bar area. We chose our desired supper from the menu on the table, and for the next 20 minutes were assiduously ignored by the barman – no amount of discrete menu-waving would bring him to our

viewpoint Dolores’s find
alqueria
Only three properties stand on the western side of the Calle Mirador, Poyato’s smallholding, the junior school and a small run-down dwelling boasting no electricity, piped water or mains drainage. This is the home of Dolores Basco or La Mojigata as she is known throughout Alqueria. Her simple lifestyle is an echo of her beliefs. She eats only home-grown vegetables, attends church regularly, takes plenty of exercise and washes in ice cold water. She has kept herself pure and chaste in thought and deed, no mean feat in hedonistic Alqueria. The day started like all that went before, there was no warning that it could be any different. Dolores was tending her vegetable patch at the rear of her garden when she came across some very strange objects. Some were leather, some metal and others wooden. They were definitely very old but the preservative quality of Alquerian soil is renown. The bad drainage is believed to be mainly responsible. They were in the region of two hundred millimetres or so in length, tube-like with fixing points for buckles or thongs at one end and enclosed at the other. Taking one of the objects in her purist of hands she carried it carefully to Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido the Village Priest for identification. The good Priest was quick to enlighten Dolores. They were in fact fifteenth century codpieces. Now Dolores didn’t know what a codpiece was yet alone what was kept inside one. On hearing exactly what the objects were and their function she stood horrified staring at her now not so pure hands. The Priest explained. In 1492 the
Christian Reconquest bypassed Alqueria because it was such an obnoxious place full of offensive dysfunctional people. It was never absorbed into Spain. In order for Isabella and Ferdinand to pay for their Reconquest, expensive things reconquests they imposed a very hefty tax on codpieces. A smugglers’ trail was soon set-up into Alqueria via what is now Dolores’s back garden. Making codpieces became the main industry of Alqueria during this period. Men would cross into Alqueria wearing their old or unwanted codpieces, buy a new one, minus the ‘Reconquest Tax’ then return via the smugglers’ route. Just before crossing back into Spain they would jettison the old codpiece and don the new. Using this strategy they couldn’t be charged duty if stopped at the border. The jettison zone was Dolores’s back yard. The mental images conjured up by untold numbers of men exposing their manhood where she had just planted her onions was too much for poor Dolores. She went into a dead faint but with the strangest of smiles on her usually solemn countenance
advance moves
Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that
tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Forum Golf Society
2 out of 3 ain´t bad for Pat Garrigan Before Forum Golf Society´s stableford competition at Hacienda del Alamo, long time Forum member Pat Garrigan revealed his own personal three wishes: namely to win an individual Forum event after seven years of near misses, to get his handicap down to 18, and for his beloved Hull City to win the FA Cup. Well, two out of three isn´t bad, as Pat duly won his first event with a massive 43 points, which in turn saw wish number two come through as, with a hefty handicap cut of 2.7 he is now playing off 17.4. Sadly for Pat, however Hull didn´t quite give him the perfect weekend, but there´s always next year. Back to the golf, and Ian Robinson was a deserved (although distant) second with 38 points, with Stan Whitty (35 points) third, Bob Attkins (34 points) fourth & Terry Davies (34 points) fifth. Bob also claimed one of the nearest the pin prizes, with the others going to Fran Elam & Maurice Jamieson.
Good news too for Forum in the regional finals of the prestigious F o r d Leagues played at Las Colinas on 11th May, with Phil Elam & Tony Morgan going through to the Grand Finals at La Sella next month. Forum´s upcoming fixtures are 30th May Team Texas Scramble at Playa Macenas 6th – 8th June Ford League Grand Finals at La Sella 13th June 5 Club Stableford at Lorca For further information, contact Phil Elam on 666 847840 / philjelam@yahoo.co.uk, or see www.forumgolfsociety.webs.com
• After a nine-year wait, Arsenal, and manager Arsene Wenger, have won a trophy! Last Saturday the Gunners, in their 18th final, hit back from 2-0 down to beat Hull City 3-2 after extra-time to lift the prize for the 11th time. It is 48 years since a team overturned a two-goal deficit in an FA Cup final. Back in 1966, Everton defeated Sheffield Wednesday, also by 3-2. • Congratulations to St Johnstone who won the Scottish Cup for the first time in their 130-year history, beating Dundee United 2-0. • Here in Spain, Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with Barcelona to win the La Liga title for the tenth time. And on Saturday Atletico hope to complete the double when they play rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League final. • Also coming up we have the League play-off finals at Wembley: Derby play QPR for a place in the Premiership on Saturday, Leyton Orient meet Rotherham in the FL1 showdown on Sunday followed on Monday by Burton Albion v. Fleetwood Town in FL2. Fleetwood have already won six promotions in ten years. • Marc Marquez became the first rider for 42 years to win the opening five races of a season when he raced to victory in the French MotoGP at Le Mans last Sunday. • Later, fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal, having beaten Andy Murray in an earlier round, lost to his arch-rival Novak Djokovic in the Madrid tennis final. • Sir Bradley Wiggins won Tour of California cycle race. • UEFA has fined Manchester City £49m (€60m) for ‘breach of financial fair play rules’ and have also restricted the club’s Champions League squad to 21 players for next season.
• Tomorrow, England play Sri Lanka in the first ODI at The Oval (the second takes place next Wednesday at Old Trafford). Tony Matthews • The four-day by PGA Championship gets underway in 24 hours time at Wentworth. • On Friday, Bath play Northampton in Rugby’s Amlin Cup final at the Millenium Stadium while Saracens meet Munster in the Heineken Cup final at the same venue on Saturday. • This Sunday cars and drivers are in action in the Monaco Grand Prix (Nico Rosberg won last year’s race); the Irish 1,000 Guineas from the Curragh and the French Open Tennis Championship starts at Roland Garros, ending on 8 June. • And if don’t already know, the World Cup gets underway in 23 days time with host nation Brazil playing Croatia on 12 June. DID YOU KNOW? Nomadic goalkeeper John Burridge was associated with no less than 29 different clubs during his lengthy career which spanned 31 years from 1968 to 1999. He made 986 appearances at various levels, including 771 in the Football League. ‘Budgie’ played his last game at the age of 43. And for those interested, my latest, and 131st football book, ‘ENGLAND IN THE WORLD CUP’ signed by Bryan Robson, OBE and myself, is available at €15 (tel. 634 319 414).

Worst Drought For More Than 80 Years By Martin Shortland
Almeria province has suffered a severe lack of rain in the period from October last year until May this year. And that comes on top of the continuing drought which is now into its third year – that’s according to recent figures released by the regional meteorological office. Spokeswoman for the office Ana Casals said, “We have had to go all the way back to 1940 – 41, when this part of Spain suffered a comparable period of extreme drought.” The rainfall levels recorded at monitoring points across the region have been down by as much as half and in some cases even lower. The two reservoirs which supply the province with most of its water – Berja and Almanzora – have water levels, “significantly lower than this time last year,” she said. She pointed out that the water levels drop at a faster rate than they rise, which although not of great concern at the moment, could become a worry if the trend continued. She explained that evaporation accounts for a large amount of water loss – almost as much as natural usage. The meteorologists are describing this as one of the most dramatic dry periods of the last century; the two previous being the aforementioned 1940 – 41, which went on for some four years and then again from 1979 – 83. Although a great percentage of the regions agriculture takes place under plastic, it is still heavily dependent on the water supply from reservoirs. Farmers also have rainwater collection systems, which in the main, are all but used up now. Those who have suffered most are almond, olive, orange and lemon growers, with the almond crop being especially badly affected for the last two years. As I mentioned in a report some weeks ago, a serious consequence of the lack of rain is the diminishing size of the bee population - because they have less food available to them: this in turn means there are fewer bees to pollinate the plants. In many cases, farmers have had to bring in whole hives of bees from other parts of Spain to pollinate their crops. Although the hi-tec nature of the so called ‘plasticulture’ is 99% germ free, it still isn’t completely immune to disease and infections; this past 12 months being a case in point. Towards the end of last summer, a virulent disease known as the New Delhi virus was discovered in the courgette crop, affecting up to 40% in some areas. The virus is carried by white fly and is very potent, requiring the manual removal and destruction of infected plants. Farmers were concerned the virus might cross over into this seasons melon crop and in January, their fears were realised when the first signs of the disease began to appear again around Vera. Since then it has spread to many other areas, infecting as much as 50% of the crop at its peak. This has nothing to do with the drought, but it’s just another example of how precarious growing fruit and vegetables can be.

Roquetas Fishermen Fear For Their Future By Martin Shortland
An undersea world of volcanic rock, with peaks and canyons and sweeping sea meadows, could threaten the livelihood of fishermen in the port of Roquetas. That’s the view of their spokesman, the president of the shipowners association Antonio Rodriguez, who was speaking to the local press last week. The area of sea in question is 14 miles to the southeast of Roquetas and is known as El Seco de Olivo – The Dry Olive – and has been a favourite and productive fishing ground for many years. The smaller ‘day boats’ depend on its ease of access and rich feeding grounds it provides for the variety of fish the artisanal, traditional fishermen are looking for. However, all this could change if a new directive is enforced, turning it into a site of special interest because of its unique mix of flora and fauna; the area would become a ‘no go zone’ and the knock on effect could well be the closure of the port. It’s a bleak prospect but one Mr. Rodriguez predicts is bound to happen if the fishing ground is closed off to his members. He warned that the fleets from the ports of Adra and Almeria would also be threatened saying, “This is one more nail in the coffin for our trade, every year it becomes more difficult, with the constant problems put in our way.” He made comparisons with the fishermen from Morocco who he said ‘were not governed by the same EU regulations.’ He accused them of illegally fishing in Spanish waters with a total disregard for the set of laws his members have to follow, regarding net sizes and types of fish they are allowed to catch. But all that is of little consequence if this rich fishing ground becomes out of bounds to the local fishermen. Other areas provide similar quantities of fish, but are further away and not easily reached in a day. Former fisherman of 25 years – now a local bar owner – Toni Leon, told me what he and many of his colleagues believe to be the reason

behind the decision. He said there is a clear political motive and accuses both the American and Japanese governments of influencing the European Union in their rulings on fishing in the Mediterranean. He added, “The tuna – our main catch - only comes into these waters to breed and then return to their year round habitat in the Atlantic. The American and Japanese market for tuna is huge and any fish caught by Spanish fisherman is clearly going to make a difference; they want to stop us catching ‘their’ fish.” Another restriction placed on the fishermen is the times they can leave and enter the port - different days, different times – which Mr. Rodriguez condemns as ‘being crazy,’ so they are limited as to where they can and can’t fish. In these times of fishing quotas and the hundred and one other laws governing the industry, this is one more obstacle the fishermen can well do without. It’s a hard enough life going to sea with no guarantee of a catch. Toni Leon gave up fishing because it was becoming too hard to comply with all the regulations, he said, “I come from a fishing family, it’s in my blood, but in the end the hassle became too much. All we wanted to do was make an honest and fair living to bring up our families – the industry is being killed and the government does nothing to help it.” Manolo Garcia, leader of the council opposition party PSOE said in a statement that he would be taking up the case on behalf of the fishermen saying, “The livelihood of not only the fishermen, but the whole community is at stake and we as a party intend to take this to the highest level to prevent the implementation of this ridiculous piece of legislation.”
