Fire Destroys Part Of Protected Nature Reserve By Martin Shortland

A fire which swept through one of the region’s most valuable nature reserves is suspected to have been started deliberately. The fire started on Sunday afternoon in the Punta Etinas Sabinar near San Augustin, between Roquetas de Mar and El Ejido. It was first reported at 2.00 pm by a party of bird watchers walking through the reserve. The 2,000 hectares of land is designated as a region of special ecological interest; a large number of uncommon plants, shrubs and grasses grow there and it’s also home to many rare species of

birds and other wildlife. About 80 hectares of land were destroyed and although the fire was brought under control fairly quickly, a fire department spokesman said it will take at least a week for it to cool down enough to allow an investigation to begin. Police confirmed they were looking into the possibility of it being a malicious outbreak; it was exactly a year ago to the day when a similar fire started in the same area. Although evidence was discovered at the time to suggest it had been a

deliberate act, no one has ever been prosecuted over the incident. Manuel Ortega, from the Friends of Punta Etinas, said it was a strange coincidence a fire should happen a year after the last one, adding, “Because the reserve is so close to the sea, the plants here have a very high moisture content so it’s not at all easy for a fire to start without some assistance.” A team of investigators are hoping to conduct an inquiry towards the end of this week.

Are you helping your town hall improve the services that it offers you?

Consulate and Town Halls urge British residents to register on the “padrón” to avoid difficulties accessing local services and help them to improve local services. The British Consulate in Malaga, together with Zurgena Town Hall, organised an event held in the old train station in Zurgena on Wednesday 18th June, where Town Halls from across the province of Almeria shared ideas to work together to ensure that all British residents are registered with their Town Hall. Around 20 town halls from different points of Almeria attended the event, where the Consulate informed about some of the key points to get British citizens to register on the “padrón”. It is estimated that the actual number of Brits living in the whole Andalucía could be more than 350 000 but only around 40 000 are registered. One of the main reasons for this is that residents are not aware that they are required by law to register neither do they know the benefits it brings, such as access to education, local and social services amongst others. It is not only a legal requirement but as British Vice-Consul, Rosslyn Crotty, explained, “it is vital that British residents are aware of the services they can access provided they register on the “padrón” in the town where they are living”. She added, “Town Halls across the province are making

great efforts to help British residents integrate into their communities”. For their part, representatives of the Town Halls stressed the importance of making the process of registering on the “padrón” as easy as possible, trying to establish good communication between the British residents and their local Town Hall. During the meeting, the Town Halls presented the campaigns they are running and the benefits they are giving to people registered on the “padrón” as well as measures they are taking to help Brits overcome the language barrier when registering. Some foreigners’ and tourism departments at the Town Halls have staff of different nationalities, which can help those residents who are unaware of the benefits of registering on the “padrón”. Many Town Halls agreed that the main reason for not registering on the “padrón” was fear of state control of financial matters, when in fact it is designed to help Town Halls find out who and how many people are living in their area, without entering into investigations about their status or financial situation. The event concluded with a common objective: To work together to ensure that as many foreign residents as possible are registered, which will benefit the residents themselves and the Town Halls alike.

Spector of demolition orders returns to Albox

Source: AUAN, 30th June 2014 The spectre of demolition orders returns to Albox on the 9th of July as H.A.G and A.G.G. of Construcciones Alto Almanzora, C.D.B of Grupo Nazcar, and the works technical director, A.G.F., stand trial for alleged planning crimes relating to the construction of 7 houses, some never completed, on the ‘Las Palmeras’ urbanization in the area of Llano de los Olleres in Albox. The prosecution is seeking penalties of one year of imprisonment, disbarment from their profession for one year and six months, a fine and the demolition of the houses at a cost to the

accused of 63,391.77 Euros. The former planning councillor for Albox, J.L. W. (deceased) is also cited in the case with charges of allegedly failing to prosecute a planning crime and for authorising the provision of water and electricity to the properties. Maura Hillen, president of the homeowners association, AUAN, said “The homeowners are fully aware that there is no guarantee of compensation if those accused are convicted. Some paid up to 140,000 euros in stage payments for homes that were never even completed whilst, of course, the owners of the completed

houses paid even more. To add to the stress cases such as this one, which began in 2006, can languish in the court system for many years leaving homeowners trapped in limbo with the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads.” “We want the government to change the law to guarantee compensation to third party purchasers in good faith. The law should punish the guilty and protect the innocent.” For more information contact Maura Hillen 661329919 or info@almanzora-au.org

g n i h t o l c n o s a e s f-o t Storing ou

Most of us in the northern hemisphere are experiencing longer days, warmer weather, and fewer opportunities to wear our winter clothing. One of my favorite things to do when spring takes hold is to pack up my cold weather clothing and swap it out of storage with my warmer weather things. It sounds silly, but I really do enjoy this process. Opening a box of summer clothes is like finding a forgotten five dollar bill in the pocket of a pair of pants. Before I open up the warmer weather clothing, though, I make sure that I have properly prepared my cooler weather clothing for storage. Storing dirty clothes for six months can do a lot of damage and attract bugs, so the first step in the process is to clean everything you plan to store. **Dry clean your natural fiber and delicate clothing, and run the rest through the washing machine. Be sure not to starch anything, though, as bugs love to gnaw on starch, and remove everything from flimsy plastic dry cleaning bags. Also, now is the time to have damaged items repaired, and to find new homes for anything you no longer wish to keep. If you’re someone who likes to shop, then consider decreasing your winter wardrobe by half or more so that when you bring new items in during the fall you’ll have space in your closet. My storage system for out of season clothing is very basic. I have clear plastic boxes with lids and I toss a handful of cedar balls into each box to deter pests. I also throw a humidity control desiccant packet into each container for good measure. I have one large box for coats, scarves, and hats, and another large box for business professional clothing like winter suits, dresses, and heavy slacks (they’re called underbed boxes on the Container Store website). Then, I have five smaller plastic sweater boxes organized by color: black, grey, blue, white/brown, and red/green. In case you’re curious, those are the only colors in my whole wardrobe — it’s oddly void of orange, purple, and yellow. Read more on: www.unclutter.com

Bit By Bit - Another Section Of Motorway Opens By Martin Shortland

If you’ve ever driven to Malaga from Almeria on the Mediterranean motorway, you’ll know what a frustrating experience it can be. About halfway along, the motorway stops and you find yourself crawling around the twists and turns of the old coastal road, occasionally glimpsing sections of the abandoned motorway construction work as you pass in a long convoy of slow moving lorries. And abandoned it was, in dramatic fashion. Four years ago, at the height of the economic crisis, the government ran out of money for road building and the plug was pulled, literally overnight. Major projects across the country were stopped in their tracks and hundreds of miles of unfinished motorways were left to gather weeds. Towards the middle of last year, work was resumed on two sections of the Almeria/Malaga A7 road and last week these two sections - totalling 10 kilometres - were opened. They represent a small but important part of the 45 kilometres still to be completed and presented a demanding challenge in terms of construction difficulties. An estimated 17,000 vehicles per day used the old section of road between Taramay and Guadalfeo, and during the summer that figure could often double. But now this nightmare

bottleneck has been relieved, thanks to a 2 kilometre long tunnel between Tamaray and Lobres. A 246 million euros price tag has been put on the work so far and this will rise to over 600 million by the time the whole project is completed. The next 15 kilometre stretch, Polopos – Albunuol, is planned to be opened at the end of this year. The final two sections, totalling a further 30 kilometres, should be opened by the end of 2015. Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, the president of the Council of Andalucia, Sebastian Perez, said, “The government has carried out its promise to invest in the completion of this vital road link.” He said the government was complying with its commitment to what seemed like, “an unrealisable dream.” Many visitors to Almeria and Roquetas will be relieved to hear this good news and it can only be hoped the predictions for the completion of the entire route prove to be correct. Because of the lack of year round flights to Almeria airport, people are forced to fly to Malaga and the arduous journey prevents many visitors from coming here – it’s just too far and too complicated, especially for older people.

The town mayor, Gabriel Amat was present at the Santa Ana castle last week, when details of this year’s ‘A Pie De Calle’, or ‘Street View’ were unveiled. Now in its fourteenth year, the organisers promise over 150 events taking place in six venues during July and August. It’s a true feast of festive fun for the summer season in Roquetas. Sitting alongside the mayor, the councillor for culture, Maria Dolores Ortega stressed that this year’s programme was based on quality, diversity and variety, and as always, entertainment for the whole family is a high priority. The list of events is certainly wide ranging; from children’s magic shows, to theatre, comedy, film and theatre, traditional music, big bands, rock and pop. She said, “We include all branches of the arts and bring them to the six stages across the municipality, there really is something for everyone.” As in the past, the two traditional markets will take place in the romantic setting of the castle; the Sailors market – from 18th July and the Medieval market – from 15th August. There are jugglers, dancers, hawks and donkeys and all the marketers dress in costumes of the day. Both last for four days and conjure up the smells, sights and sounds of a bygone age. If you’re

going to visit, then plan to eat there because the food is very tasty. At the end of July, the Fiesta of Santa Ana takes over the port from 26th and lasts for a week, with the addition of another music stage inside the Club Nautico. The music and dancing goes on until dawn, so it’s not for the feint hearted. A particular favourite of mine is the Almeriblues night, this year being held on 12th July at the Lighthouse, with four bands booked to appear. If that’s not your thing, then a number of classical music evenings will take place in the castle as well as a full list of events in the adjacent amphitheatre, where most of the children’s and family entertainment takes place; everything from cinema, magic shows, slapstick theatre, flamenco and big band music. The venues are – The Playa Serena in the Urbanisation. The Castle, Lighthouse and Amphitheatre in the port. The bullring in the town centre and the marina beach in Aguadulce. Every event is free and a comprehensive booklet giving a full entertainment guide and details of the venues is available from the town hall, the information centre at the castle and at bars and restaurants around the town. Skin Cancer: Melonoma

Melanoma is a rare and serious type of cancer that begins in the skin and can spread to other organs in the body. The most common sign of melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or a change in an existing mole. This can happen anywhere on the body, but most often the back, legs, arms and face are affected. What to look for with your moles! ABCDE

A: asymmetry A normal, healthy mole is usually round due to the fact it grows evenly. This means it is symmetrical, with one side a mirror image of the other.

B: border Melanomas often have ragged or blurred borders or edges. Normal, healthy moles tend to be much rounder with smooth, clearly defined borders.

C: colour A mole usually has one uniform colour, whereas melanomas are often uneven in their colour, a melanoma can have two or three shades of brown or black, or varying shades of red and pink.

The darkening of a mole is a sign that it is possibly becoming cancerous

D: diameter Melanomas are usually larger than 6mm (approximately the width of a pencil). It is also common for the melanoma to continue to grow. However, this is not a sure sign of malignant melanoma. A cancerous mole can be smaller than this, and a perfectly healthy mole can be larger.

E: elevation or enlargement

A melanoma will often get bigger and may become raised above the skin’s surface. Inflammation or swelling is another sign that you need to see your doctor for a check-up. It is often the case that the original mole remains the same size, while an area around or under it appears to spread or swell. In addition, any new symptom - such as bleeding, itching or crusting - may also be due to melanoma. If any of your moles have the changes of above, see your Doctor! Source: Almeria Angels

Tricks to Pluck Perfect Eyebrows

Plucking perfect eyebrows to achieve that flawless, faceframing arch can be a tedious (and painful!) process. But since fuller, thicker brows are in style, you can (and should) spend much less time with the tweezers. Try these 10 pro beauty tips to score perfect eyebrow arches at home. Eyebrow Shaping Tip: Choose the Right Tweezers “Opt for a sharp, slanted style,” says Kristie Streicher, a celebrity brow expert at the Warren Tricomi Salon in NYC and L.A. “Unlike pointy versions, they grab tiny strays quickly and won’t pinch your skin along with the hairs Eyebrow Shaping Tip: Tweeze After Your Shower Warm water opens the follicles and softens hairs, helping them slip out more easily. Eyebrow Shaping Tip: Ease the Plucking Pain If plucking is too painful or it’s right before your period (when skin is most sensitive), dab on a numbing gel Eyebrow Shaping Tip: Ditch Your Magnifying Mirror This tool can make it look like there’s more hair to remove than there really is, says Streicher, which can lead to overplucking. Instead, use a regular mirror in a well-lit room—if you can’t see stray hairs under these conditions, neither can anyone else. “After every few tweezes, take a couple of steps back to see the bigger picture,” she says. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Skype – Is this a contraction of the phrase “SKy high hYPE” (Wrong but funny) or “SKy Peer” (True and clever) or “Sky Peer-toPeer” (which was it’s original proposed name) or just a truly worthwhile addition to worldwide communications (your choice)? Skype is a freemium voice-over-IP service and instant messaging client. Freemium? Apparently, this is a pricing system where the initial, very usable and in this case, very good product, “Skype” is free and then a premium (cost) can be incurred for other services. Skype was first released in August 2003. It was created by Janus Friis (Denmark) and Niklas Zennström (Sweden) in cooperation with Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn (Estonia) and had 725 million registered users as of the end of 2011. These numbers have taken a dip due to competitors like ‘Viber’, ‘What’s App’ and ‘Google Hangouts’. The service allows users to communicate by voice using a microphone, video by using a webcam, and instant messaging over the Internet. Phone calls may be placed to recipients on the traditional telephone networks. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free of charge, while calls to land-line telephones and mobile phones are charged from a “Top Up” or “Direct Debit” system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features, including file transfer, and video-conferencing. What are the main benefits of using Skype? Well, registered users of Skype are identified by a unique Skype Name (mine is ‘saiminja’ or just use my email address), and may be listed in the Skype directory (just like any ordinary phone book). Skype allows these registered users to communicate through both instant messaging, voice and video chat. Voice chat allows telephone calls between pairs of users and conference calling, and uses a proprietary audio codec (A CODEC is simply

a method of COding and DECoding an audio signal so that it can travel over the internet). Skype’s text chat client allows group chats, emoticons, storing chat history and editing of previous messages. The usual features familiar to instant messaging users—user profiles, online status indicators, and so on—are also included. The Online Number, a.k.a. SkypeIn, service allows Skype users to receive calls on their computers dialled by conventional phone subscribers to a local Skype phone number; local numbers are available for Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A Skype user can have local numbers in any of these countries, with calls to the number charged at the same rate as calls to fixed lines in the country. The countries on this growing list are referred to collectively as the SkypeIn Countries. Skype supports conference calls, video chats and screen sharing between 25 people at a time for free! Also it isn’t limited to any one operating system. I have it running on my Linux box as you read this. It is also on my Windows XP and 7 machines and my little Android tablet. I also understand that you can get it on the iPad! So far it sounds great but what are the drawbacks? Firstly, you can not use it for emergency calls due to a ruling in the American courts stating that it isn’t an “interconnected VoIP provider”. Who cares! It works! Next time we will be setting up a Skype account and you can then contact me. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

Salad Days

It’s a Leo thing apparently; the trait I have of leaving some things to the last possible minute. At school even with all the holidays to do my homework, it would still be done Sunday night before term started again. At secondary school even though it was a 9am start we weren’t officially late until registration finished at 0925. I guess the leeway was in place in case a school bus ever arrived late. Being the only Catholic school for miles around 90% of the students were coached in from across Surrey. For those that walked to school the system could be played, sometimes I would crawl out of bed at the last possible moment, walk the 15 minutes to school and be there for what I reasoned was ‘in good time’ which was about 0923. The school had the grand title of Saint Peters and Merrow Grange RC Comprehensive, so named as it was 2 schools separated by a 200 yard walk down a quiet lane. Until 1971 the upper school had

braben’s blog... Loopy Science

I think scientists may be loopy and I think you may agree at the end of this week’s nonsense. After careful research scientists have found that a frog’s tongue can lift up to three times its own body weight! I’m not awfully sure how that helps the frog, unless there are competitions, that even David Attenborough knows nothing about, between different species of frogs to find the one whose tongue is strongest. It’s an interesting zoological snippet and perhaps one that could turn heads at a dinner party, but beware. If you do introduce this gem into your anecdotal repertoire, don’t be surprised to find invitations suddenly dry up. After all, not many people are willing to discuss the merits of a frog’s tongue over their meal! What drew me to this report was, just why on earth anyone would want, or indeed need, to ascertain just how much weight a frog’s tongue can support. Scientists can do great work. Only recently the people who were involved with the Higgs Boson experiment, where they were searching for a particular particle, think that they found it. God knows how, it took me three hours once to find Burnley and that’s a sizeable town, so finding for a microscopic particle is some task. So yes, they do some good stuff, which makes me wonder why they bothered to investigate a frog’s tongue at all. What happens? Does a scientist wake up one morning and, over his Corn Flakes, decide he’ll spend time investigating that tongue, for no other reason than it appears to be a jolly wheeze and nobody else has done it? What do they do with this information? How does the knowledge that this tongue is a pretty nifty thing help us? Seems a bit of a waste of their time to me, but what I know about frog’s tongues and their contribution to civilisation is about equal to Newcastle United’s trophy haul in the last 45 years-zero! Perhaps the work on frogs isn’t that surprising. After all, we’re talking about scientists here, the gang that experimented on giving drugs to an elephant, to see if it would bring on temporary madness. It did! Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us that research shows howling like a wolf makes you feel better. Oh, it’s too late-they already have! Honestly, they really have. I rest my case. Scientists are loopy. Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. been a convent school for girls (Merrow Grange) and the lower school a boy’s school (St. Peters). There were extra-long breaks between classes as we often had to walk between the two buildings. Merrow Grange was a mock Tudor manor house with a grand wooden staircase and floors that creaked beautifully when trodden on. The school had a good reputation for music and the music teacher Mr Carter had the grandest room of all. It was big enough to use as a recital room, with a vaulted ceiling, balcony and huge leaded bay windows. He must have loved coming to work; I certainly did as he was my form tutor for two years. Students were banned from climbing the tiny circular staircase to the balcony, but if left unsupervised momentarily, we boys would take our chances. The stairs lead further up to the mythical attic where we supposedly would have been

expelled if ever caught there. Sadly it was padlocked and I never got in. The Grange also housed a convent with ancient nuns within. As newbies aged 11 and 12 the older boys as a rite of passage scared us with the legend of a ghostly Blue Nun that wandered the attic rooms at night carrying a light. In hindsight ‘Blue Nun’ was also the brand name of a popular wine but we fell for it. Merrow Grange was built in 1868 and one owner was a keen botanist planting Sequoia/Giant Redwoods and other exotics throughout the then 45 acres gardens. The gardens were landscaped with Pulhamite an artificial stone. Sunken paths, ponds and artificial hills were created which are now all overgrown. The most interesting part was nicknamed ‘the caves’, again we were strictly forbidden to enter. It’s actually a Grade II listed grotto with a sunken fernery covered by an iron work

glazed roof. A winding staircase leads down to a dark tunnel with only one way in/out. When the Pulhamite was mixed 100 years ago something alike to glitter was added and by candle or torchlight the walls shimmer magically. We would jump the school fence at weekends to explore the overgrown gardens and caves, night time made it more adventurous. Once my mate John Fergus went and hid in the tunnel. We searched for him but gave up; we had almost reached the exit when the sod terrified us by screaming ghoulishly from behind us with a torch held under his chin making his face glow red. John had discovered a tiny cave in the roof of the tunnel and had hidden up there whilst we passed underneath. Then Gollum like he clambered down to scare the living daylights out of us – happy days!

Home Mortgages Fell by 13.4% in April

The number of new mortgages granted on homes recorded in the property registers stood at 15,326 in April, which is 13.4% less than the same month in 2013, according to data published last week by the National Statistics Institute, who pointed out that these figures come from transactions carried out in previous months. With April’s year-on-year decline, mortgaged homes return to negative rates, after rising by 2% in March following nearly four years of cuts. However, given that Easter was celebrated in April this year and last year in March, the Institute stated that it would be more sensible to analyse the results of both months together. In the fourth month of the year, the average value of the mortgages on homes reached 100,394 euros, which is 6.2% more than the same month of 2013, while the capital loaned fell by 8% year-on-year, to 1,538.6 million euros. Month-on-month (April over March), home mortgages fell by 7.8%, its lowest decline in this month since 2011. Capital loaned for home mortgages experienced a monthly cut of 9.6%, also registering its lowest drop in the past four years. In the first quarter of the year, the number of mortgaged homes reduced by 21.9% over the same period of 2013, with the capital loaned falling by 20.7% and the average loan value increasing by 1.5%. The regions which registered the greatest number of mortgages on homes in April were Andalusia (2,760), Catalonia (2,489) and Madrid (2,359). In April, fourteen regions registered a

lower number of home mortgages than in the same month of 2013, with the largest decreases being those recorded in Murcia (-29.6%) and Andalusia (22.8%). The only year-on-year increases were registered for La Rioja (+80.2%), Navarra (+67.7%) and the Canary Islands (+9.7%). In addition, the regions where most capital was loaned for home mortgages were Madrid (320.3 million euros), Catalonia (302.7 million) and Andalusia (245.5 million). According to data from the statistical agency, during the fourth month of the year 23,465 mortgages were constituted on rural and urban properties (homes are included within the latter), representing a decrease of 20.5% compared to April 2013. The capital loaned for the mortgages granted rose, however, by 16.1% over the same month in 2013, to 3,731.5 million euros, while the average mortgage value on all rural and urban properties stood at 159,025 euros, which represents an increase of 46.1% over April 2013. The average interest rate for mortgage loans on homes in April reached 3.97%, against 4.32% registered a year earlier, while the average interest rate for all rural and urban properties stood at 3.84%, with an average term of 21 years. 93.1% of the mortgages in April used a variable rate, compared with 6.9% on a fixed rate. The Euribor is the reference rate most used in the constitution of variable rate mortgages, specifically in 87.5% of all the new contracts.

Foreign Tourists Spent 20,129 Million Euros in Spain to May

Spending by international tourists reached 20,129 million euros through to May, representing an increase of 9.1% over the same period in 2013, according to figures released on Thursday from the Egatur tourism expenditure survey conducted by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. In the first five months of the year, the average daily expenditure increased by 0.3%, to 111 euros, and the average expenditure per tourist increased by 0.8%, to 939 euros, as did the average length of stay, which stood at 8.5 nights. In the month of May alone, international tourists spent 5,273 million euros, which is 3.5% more than the same month last year. British tourists were the visitors who spent the most money in Spain between January and May, with 3,806 million euros, and accounted for 18.9% of the total. They also registered the greatest increase in that period, of 12.3%. They were followed closely by German tourists, with 3,374 million euros, and an increase of 10.6%; the Scandinavian countries, with 2,340 million euros, up 10.8%, and then the French tourists, with 1,911 million euros and a rise of 2.6%. Visitors from the United States ranked fifth with 864 million euros spent

Rental contract In Spain, it is normal to give one to threemonths notice of intention to vacate. The notice letter should be sent by registered post. An inventory of the property will be made before a landlord will agree to return a deposit. Property sales Estate agents in Spain handle most property sales although it is possible to sell a property privately. Signing of the final deed of sale is considered the legal completion of a sale. Anyone who cannot attend the event in person may give power of attorney to a third party to sign on their behalf. Properties purchased with a mortgage will have had life insurance in place which may not be cancelled until the sale is completed. Insurance House insurance can be cancelled once a sale is completed. Utility bills (Electricity, Water, Gas, Telephone, Internet) As with any house move, there are utility bills to be settled and meters to be read. If meters are not outside the property, access will be required. Utility bills in Spain are commonly paid by direct debit so these will need to be cancelled once final payment has been made. Leave a forwarding address with all the companies involved. Health Care Anyone who has received medical treatment while in Spain should have their records forwarded to their new

practitioner or ask for a copy. Banking A Spanish bank account should be kept open for a short period to settle final bills. Make sure that the direct debits have been cancelled once final payments of the bills have been made. Cancel your credit cards. Tax Be aware that under some circumstances the proceeds of property sales will be subject to Spanish capital gains tax. Income Tax To ensure that each individual understands their own obligations with regard to tax liability on departure from Spain it would be wise to seek professional advice. Education Give schools a reasonable amount of notice of a child’s departure. There may be outstanding bills for school fees, transport or meals to be settled. Request from the school a certificate stating the latest grade passed by the child when giving notice of departure. Leave a forwarding address for any correspondence. Correspondence A redirection service is offered by the Spanish post office (Correos). Animals The EU pet passport covers dogs and cats for movement within Europe and the Pets Travel Scheme (PETS) allows qualifying domestic pets to travel to and from the UK without a period of quarantine. Local vets can provide information and documentation.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. My brother has deceased in Spain and has named me on his will (which was signed in Spain) as the beneficiary of his worldwide estate. He had no assets in the u.k. My brother had been a tax resident in Spain for at least 20 years and was clearly nondomiciled in the u.k. At the time of death he had approximately 700,000 pounds sterling in a deposit account in Jersey and a villa in Mojacar worth approximately 500000 euro. I am domiciled in the u.k. My cousin made a tax declaration in Spain and declared the existence of his funds in Jersey on a 720 form.(new form by which residents have the obligation to declare their assetts abroad to the Spanish tax office) We need to look at this from two angles. How to wind up the estate and how to deal with inheritance tax in each jurisdiction. WINDING UP THE ESTATE. If the will that was made in Spain was in reference to the worldwide estate (not limited to Spain) and had a second witness added to it, then their will be no problem in con-validating the Spanish will for it to be used to obtain probate at the Royal Jersey Courts in Jersey which are efficient and easy to deal with. In Spain you would simply obtain probate on the will in reference to the villa in Spain. In other words probate will be straightforward both in Spain and in Jersey allowing you access to the account in Jersey and providing you with a title deed to the villa in Mojacar. DEALING WITH INHERITANCE TAX. In the U.K. General rule: you have to declare for inheritance tax the complete estate if the deceased was domiciled in the u.k. If not you would only declare the assets situated in the

u.k. (Please note that for this purpose funds in Jersey are not considered to be in the u.k.). As you say that the deceased was not domiciled in the u.k. and the assets are not in the u.k. no inheritance tax will be due in the u.k. In Spain. General rule: If the beneficiary is a resident of Spain he/she has to declare anything he/she receives as inheritance regardless of where it is situated in the world. If the heir is non-resident you only declare in Spain what is situated in Spain. (Some life policies issued by foreign insurance companies operating in Spain also, but this is the exception to the general rule and would many pages to explain). In this case as you the beneficiary are non-resident in Spain you would only pay inheritance tax in Spain on the house situated in Spain In Jersey: In Jersey you only have to pay a small tax to the Royal Jersey Courts consisting of 750 pounds for the first 100,000 pounds and then 0.5% for additional funds. This is because you are non-resident in Spain. If you had been a resident in Spain then you would have had to pay inheritance tax on the money in Jersey also and their would have been no escaping because your cousin declared the existence of the funds to the tax office by filling in a 720 form. (Declaration of assets abroad form) We can accept no responsibility for following the information on this article. It is general information provided in good faith, but it is an extremely simplified explanation of something that is very complex that includes many variables and even some grey areas open to interpretation. On a matter of this importance is is essential to discuss your with all the information and documents pertinent to your particular case available.

LOCAL WATER DECLARED DRINKABLE

The Department of Health (sanidad) has issued a unified declaration of potability for the water of Galasa across the Levante. It comes after an extensive period of government testing of water at 83 urban centres across Carboneras, Mojácar, Turre, Antas, Arboleas, Cuevas del Almanzora, Garrucha, Huércal-Overa, Los Gallardos, Pulpí, Zurgena & Bédar. Galasa water – high in mineral contenthas been swinging in and out of potability for years, depending on how much crud from the dams they’ve been pumping in. Whether this is a true fact, or simply the politicians responding to the threat of consumer action via the courts, god only knows. I doubt Galasa have updated their system much, and I also doubt that they’ve touched the water distribution systems in towns. So what they’ve done is said that the water in the town deposits is drinkable. Once it’s gone through all the old pipes in your town to your tap, it’s the luck of the draw… It’s also a sad state of my general outlook on Spanish politicians that my first reaction was disbelief and suspicion! Whatever happened to my faith in public administration? Source: http://www.davidjackson.info

Albox is a municipality in the province of Almeria, Andalusia, Spain. The name Albox comes from the Arabic for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish phrase for the forest – el bosque. Traditionally a market town, Albox is located approximately 130 kilometres from Almeria which is the capital of the province of the same name. The Albox town hall is situated in the Plaza Garcia Aro. Albox is situated in the heart of the Almanzora Valley some 424 metres above mean sea level (37°23′″N 2°08′″W). Covering an area of approximately 165 km², it’s northern borders are bounded by Chirivel and Velez Rubio, to south it is bounded by Cantoria, to the east by Taberno and Arboleas. Oria and Partaloa share it’s western borders. Source: http://www.alboxinfo.com/

The Book Thief “I wanted to tell the book thief that she was one of the few souls that made me wonder what it was like to live. But in the end there were no words. Only peace. The only truth I truly know is that I am haunted by humans.” Based on the book by Australian writer Markus Zusak which was on the New York Times Best Seller List for over 230 weeks. It’s not surprising to learn that Zusak’s parents grew up in Nazi Germany. The book was inspired by two real life events: the bombing of Munich and a teenage boy offering bread to an emaciated Jew being marched through the streets. Additional inspiration came from a tale of a real life book thief in Sydney. The film is closely based on the novel. Directed by Brian Percival and scripted by Michael Petroni, it was filmed in Gorlitz, Saxony, Berlin and Studio Babelsberg, Potsdam, Brandenburg covering the period 1938-1946. Geoffrey Rush plays the kindhearted Hans, adopted father to Liesel. Emily Watson is the nagging wife, Rosa, christened the “thunderstorm always rumbling” by Liesel her adopted daughter played by an incredible French-Canadian actress, just 14 years of age, Sophie Nelisse. This is her second film. The soundtrack is provided by John Williams. The story is narrated by a morality character. If you’ve ever come across Terry Pratchett’s book Mort you’ll understand. It’s not unusual to use a morality character such as Death but it is original to create a persona with compassion: “I make it a policy to avoid the living.” It was also obvious how much he admired Liesel. His presence is threatening and he is always lying in wait:

Film Review

“the bombs were coming thicker now. It’s probably fair to say that no-one was able to serve the Fuhrer as loyally as me.” Liesel Meminger is just nine at the beginning of the film. Abandoned by her father, her mother labelled a Communist and therefore an enemy of the Nazi Germany she was running for her life and was forced to give up her two children, Liesel and Werner. Unfortunately fate stepped in and Werner died on the train journey to Molching. He was buried at the side of the railway track and what is interesting is that the funeral director dropped a book and an illiterate Liesel picked it up and hid it inside her coat. This is the first of many books that she steals. It is certainly not the most engaging of books for a young child and Hans is bemused when he tells her it is called The Gravedigger’s Handbook which he reads to her religiously every night, teaching her how to read. She cherishes the book and this is where her love of reading came from. In her new home, Liesel befriends “the yellow-haired boy” Rudy Steiner who is always teasing her for a kiss. They would have started dating had it not been for the war and probably settled down together. “I want to grow up before I die.” But alas, that wasn’t to be. Max Vandenburg comes to the Hubermanns desperate to escape from the Nazi regime, arresting Jews and sending them to concentration camps, to their deaths. His father had saved Hans’ life during the first world war so it was Hans’ way of repaying some of this debt. It was dangerous and the family could have been killed for hiding a Jew. Liesel grew close to Max. When he first arrives he clutches a book and like Liesel’s odd book, Max’s prized possession is Mein Kampf which was Hitler’s autobiography. For Xmas he painted

over all of the pages and encouraged her to write her life story. He tells her that words are life. When he becomes seriously ill she steals books and reads to him to keep his soul alive. He recovers but has to leave when the family become fearful for their lives: “You’ll always be able to find me in your words. That’s where I’ll live on.” During street parades the Nazis encouraged everyone to burn their books, supposedly marking the end of plutocrats, communists and Jews. Liesel was mortified at having to burn a book and at the end of the parade when everyone has left she returns to the bonfire to retrieve one of the smouldering books. It’s The Invisible Man by H.G.Wells. Her initial affiliation to the Hitler Youth Movement with Rudy becomes distasteful as she sees through the indoctrination and cruelty. When speaking of her role in hiding Max and willing him to stay alive she tells Hans: “We were just being people. That’s what people do.” At 14 years of age she is able to understand humanity and compassion. As a character, Liesel is an inspiration to others having tolerated endless suffering and loss. Her world falls apart and her saving grace was her love of reading which then became translated into writing her autobiography so that all those precious lives which were lost can live on through her precious words. “One small fact. You are going to die. No one lives forever. sorry to be such a spoiler. My advice is, when the time comes, don’t panic. It doesn’t seem to help.” Be warned, it is a tear-jerker but it’s good to be reminded that the Germans suffered intolerable losses just like their allies. With great wars like this one, you can’t expect any happy endings can you? War kills. Enough said.

pause for thought Sadly, in my role with the Church, I necessarily meet many people grieving the loss of loved ones. In the past few weeks, it has twice been remarked that the deceased had just heard that, contrary to all previous assurances, their home here in Spain had been ruled illegal. Of course it’s unlikely that this news had been the direct cause of that person’s death, but I’d guess that the resultant shock may well have been in part at least, a contributory factor. How tragic indeed is the uncertainty of life here, where laws and their application seem to change overnight, with little apparent reason or explanation and often look to protect the ‘con-man’ rather than those they so readily deceive. So one of those recently bereaved in this way protested that ‘trust’ seems to have become a capital offence in Spain! So what hope or comfort can be offered in such circumstances? Little practically, I’m sorry to say; but I can try to move focus to a wider perspective, from the comparatively brief time spent here on Earth to that of eternity, where God is utterly consistent and unchanging; where a home can be guaranteed without any fear of its legality, or of subsequently having its license revoked. For God’s laws are eternal and carved deep on each of our consciences. And whilst we may frequently fail, loving and serving self rather than God or our neighbours, yet He continually offers complete forgiveness to anyone ready to trust Him. So, in his letter to the Church in Thessalonica, St Paul writes “God will bring with him at his coming all who have died, who trusted in Jesus”. No conditions of being religious. No demand for leading a good life or ‘doing the best you can’. Just a requirement to trust – no longer a capital offence, but the guarantee for a home hereafter. Incredible art

Incredible art where nude models blend seamlessly into graphic backgrounds get 500 MILLION hits online - and now artist is going to paint them live • Emma Hack is famous for her body paintings on the Gotye music video • The artist’s amazing paintings have earned her 500 million Youtube hits • She paints nudes so that they blend into wallpaper-like backgrounds • Occasionally Emma will feature live birds in her pieces • Her latest exhibition will see the artist paint a nude live An artist has taken camouflage to the next level with her incredible body illustrations that see her models blend into beautiful murals. Emma Hack, famed for her work on Gotye’s music video, paints the skin of nude bodies and has amassed over 500 million Youtube hits with her mesmerizing work on the famous music video. Now the Australian artist will take her work to an exciting new level as she prepares to paint a model live for the first time in a UK gallery. The 41-year-old will spend up to 15hours illustrating the nude’s skin to make her blend into the background of an artwork The exhibition that will be shown at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London is made up of Emma’s latest collections. The collection, entitle Blossom, features four wallpaper artworks by the later interior designer Florence Broadhurst that Emma uses as a backdrop for her models. Emma who will be creating the live installation at the gallery on the preview day says that she is not nervous to be doing her work in front of an audience but she is worried about becoming distracted. ‘I don’t find it daunting, but it is exhausting and time-consuming, also chatting to viewers distracts me so I do plan to create as much as possible prior to the public viewing. For Emma the process of creating her work can be a lengthily one as she says she has many things to consider when coming up with the design. ‘Generally I research the idea and look at photos I have taken from my travels. I consider what I want the viewer to feel, how the flow of composition appears for the viewer. ‘I then either paint a background or choose some wallpaper from an archive, before heading into the studio with my model, slowly painting her outer edges, then filling in the detail on centre of the form. In an exciting twist several pieces called Birds of a Feather feature live birds that are held by the naked models, who wear nothing more than a glove to protect their hands. Emma says that having live animals in the piece can add complications so she doesn’t involve them until completion. ‘If there is a bird in the work, they arrive towards the end of the process and are positioned. I then photograph the results.’ Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk

roquetas - COMMUNITY NEWS Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Area Southwest of the coastal resort Roquetas del Mar is a 15km-long strip of protected coastline, the Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Area and Reserve. Like Albufera de Adra Natural Reserve along the coast, this is a wildlife haven encircled by a sea of plastic from the intensive agriculture that surrounds it. Even in the height of summer the beach is often deserted and its isolation makes it an ideal spot for birdwatching. The 1,960ha natural area is made up of sand dunes, beach and the raised beach of Los Alcores, immediately north of Punta Entinas. The dunes are interspersed with a series of freshwater and saline lakes. Some of the latter lakes are abandoned salt pans, the Cerrillos-Salinas Viejas. Declared a special protected zonae for birds, more than 150 species have been recorded in this wetland part of the area, including waders, flamingos and the rare Audouin’s gull. To the west within the larger protected zone are 785ha in Punta Entinas that have been designated a natural reserve, which has a higher level of environmental protection. Access To get to Punta Sabinar you can either go to Roquetas and then take the road to Almerimar, passing the saltpans Cerrillos-Salinas Viejas before you get to Punta Sabinar. Or take the Almerimar turn-off from the A7 and then turn towards Las Norias. The AL9008 heads south from here to Punta Sabinar. There are two signposted trails within the area. To get to Punta Entinas, take the exit from the A7 for Almerimar. Head to the east of the village and then walk along the beach. There is no driveable track or road linking Punta Entinas and Punta Sabinar along the coast. The only way to reach both is to either drive inland or walk along the beach.

www.soltimes.com

a Chinese shop recently in search of a fly swat, I came across a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of bras in every colour known to dye manufacturers. It was a case of never mind the quality, feel the width; the sizing labels were, of course, no help at all, but at 1.80€ each I thought it worth taking an educated guess. I celebrated my success with tea and cake, but as I am an airhead I left the shop minus my shopping - 2 red bras and 2 fly swats. Eventually remembrance kicked in, and having exhaustively searched the house, I returned to the scene of my amnesia. At my approach Ellie, who could model as Bambi’s even cuter sister, picked up her order pad, expecting my first sentence to contain the words Tea, Pot, and Large. However, I leant forward and enquired confidentially, ‘Have you taken to wearing red bras?’ Her hands flew

protectively to her chest. Her eyes, as blue as forget-me-nots on a May morning, registered innocence more surely than any polygraph. Elliot, sensing danger, fled to clean an already immaculate table, while Carolyn, aware of a disturbance in the Force, emerged from the kitchen, spatula in hand. I explained, hoping that someone had found the plastic bag containing the necessary implements for fly extermination and frontal uplift, and that they were safely awaiting collection behind the Scrumptious counter. So, if there is anyone out there who arrived home and found themselves the unexpected owner of 2 fly swats and 2 red bras, please could they return them to Scrumptious in Albox, from where I will collect them. And if you have got any sense, sit down and treat yourself to the temptations on offer – it will make the journey more than worthwhile! PS. The fly swats are for josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk swatting flies.

Welcome To the Twilight Zone

World shattering ideas and the best wheezes, always seem to pop into my head in that half sleep/half wakeful no-man’s land. And I know that it’s either drag myself out of my comfortable bed and make notes quickly, thereby upsetting my lovely lady by switching on the light, or go back to sleep in the knowledge that come morning, they will have melted away like snow in Barbados and be lost forever. And so it was last night, when a vision of the Queens Corgi’s appeared uninvited into my almost comatose head. Don’t ask me why, nothing royal had crossed my mind that day, neither had dogs or anything remotely doggy. But there they were, sitting side by side, just looking at me expectantly. I was determined not to get out of bed and reach for my note book and threw them a mental stick to chase, but they were having none of it and just sat there with lolloping tongues, willing me to come up with some Corgi type tales. And although I did manage to resist the idea of dragging myself to the computer, I spent the next God knows how many hours – fully awake – allowing all sorts of scenarios to troupe in bizarre procession through the twilight world of my imagination. All it needed to recall every eccentric detail this morning, was the trigger word ‘Corgi’. I’ve always thought that it

would be a real eye opener to be a fly on the wall inside the royal apartments, to catch glimpses of Her Majesty and Phil totally relaxed and away from the glare of the media. After all they are just two flesh and blood people like the rest of us when you get right down to it. So there they are in their lynge, in dressing gowns and wearing Homer Simpson slippers. The Queen is knitting a cardy for baby George as she catches up with Emmerdale on telly, and the Duke is nodding off - a whiskey and soda on the table beside him - as one of the Corgi’s lets one go. Now I’m sorry, they might be royalty, but dogs is dogs and they all have the same disgusting habits and peculiarities. The Queen is the first to notice the change of atmosphere and naturally does what any woman would do, and that’s blame her partner. “Is that you Phillip?” she retorts, wrinkling her nose in distaste. “What? . . . no it’s that bloody mutt Candy” He observes, kicking the nearest dog. It has to be noted that in fact not all the Queens dogs are pure bred Corgis, Candy and Vulcan being what are known as Dorgis – a cross between Corgis and Dachshunds - and who can therefore legitimately be referred to as mutts. And as if by way of confirmation, Candy lifts her head and with her whole front end doing a ‘U’ turn, she sniffs the grey cloud hovering around her rear end and delivers the surprised look that all dogs give at times like this and which basically says: “Was that me? . . . Really?” A footman enters carrying a tray of cocoa for HM; another

Scotch for HRH, and a plate of custard creams. As he turns to leave, one of the Dorgi’s/ Corgi’s, attaches itself to his left leg in a death lock as it tries to achieve what Mick Jagger apparently could not, back in 1965 and proceeds to vigorously hump his calf. But Royal footmen are impeccably trained and made of stern stuff, so pretending not to notice, and gathering as much dignity as possible, he about turns and with head held high exits with immaculate decorum, complete with a panting dog super-glued to his leg. You have to assume that the royal hounds have the run of the house, so it must be a nightmare making sure that little wet messages and embarrassing Richard the Thirds are cleared away as quickly and discretely as possible. Perhaps there is a dog flap in the drawbridge, so that they have easy access to the gardens, but whose job is it to clean up after them? (No of course they don’t have a drawbridge at Buck House; that’s just me being silly). I can’t see Her Majesty carrying poop bags around with her, so some poor servant must have the responsibility for this distasteful task. And how would he or she have got the job. I mean how would it have been advertised? That’s a question for another sleepless night. These then were the musings of my tired and hyper active imagination – and I haven’t even started on Prince Phillip’s ferrets, or the palace parrots with their colourful collection of ribald songs, courtesy of the Duke’s coaching. I should really get out more...

without support

Bosom support has always been a matter close to my heart. Finding a bra that fits, is comfortable, and is pleasing to the marital eye has always proved difficult, especially here in Spain. I have baulked at the mountainous piles of bras on offer in the markets; a bra is a garment that needs consideration, reference to the size label, and trying on; they can not be bought off the peg and on a whim, while jostling for stall space with 2 South American ladies pushing baby buggies and an amply proportioned Spanish granny. Thus I have resorted to Lesley, who can provide proper facilities, and bras with a recognisable size label. However, entering

alqueria The Man in the Remitroot Suit

Remitroot has been drunk, turned into bricks and paint, used as a rocket propellant and wrapped around pipes for lagging. Until now however no-one has worn it. No-one would have worn the stuff if it hadn’t been for the creative stupidity of Arián Pérez. Sr Pérez has very little in the way of formal training in any of the sciences but this didn’t stop him dabbling in the most obscure branches of research. For some reason unknown to the population as a whole and probably to himself he began experimenting with extruded fibres. The raw material was a goo made from the leaves of the Remitroot plant, goat’s droppings and saliva from a carefully selected Alquerian Newt. The process involves heating the mixture to within one degree of Remitroot’s critical temperature, above which the leaves explode. A measure of Arián Pérez’s work-rate was the number of explosions that occurred during the working day. Black faced and hair smouldering he would sit twitching at the bar of the La Casa Devante scribbling in a dog-eared note book. He would make alterations to complex formulae he didn’t understand and seek advice from bewildered drinkers. Only Loco Paco offered any guidance which Pérez put into practice. This is a measure of the man’s intellect, for Loco Paco’s sanity has been the subject of debate ever since he reared a Saharan Dung Beetle from a pup. Unlikely as it may have seemed to the good people of Alqueria Pérez succeeded in his experiments. On a worn out hand loom he wove a cloth made from his Remitroot based extruded fibres. The

suit which was subsequently made from the cloth was a remarkable garment. It resisted dirt, wear and the fading effects of sunlight. It was lightweight but warm while being cool in elevated temperatures. It was a breakthrough in textile technology, well it would have been apart from three disadvantages. Remitroot had long been known as an Aphrodisiac. The process of producing the cloth had enhanced this attribute. Anyone wearing the garment would be overcome by a carnal urge which can be very disruptive on public transport or during religious observances. Manuela had several items of intimate apparel made from the cloth but no-one noticed any difference in her behaviour. Another drawback of the material was its ability to resist stains, it also resisted dyeing. The only colour possible was a muddy grey with a bile green hue. The biggest problem of all was its inherent instability, it dissolved when it came in contact with alcohol. The wonder material was only suitable for colour-blind, celibate, teetotallers a rare commodity in Alqueria.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Artist loves her pet cat so much she’s added it to works by Botticelli, Dali and even the Mona Lisa While some of us spend more of our time online looking at cute cats than we would care to admit, few will have discovered the world of Fat Cat Art. A bizarre but strangely wonderful concept of classic paintings and fine art work ‘improved’ by a fat ginger cat, Fat Cat Art is rapidly growing its online fan base. The pieces are the work of Russian artist Svetlana Petrova who features her own cat Zarathustra in every

Stunning pictures from National Geographic photo community celebrating the furry, scaly and feathered critters we love the most Odd couple: Meg Kumin, member of the National Geographic, Your Shot community, captured this amazing shot of Sonic the cat giving a piggyback ride to Rosy the Rat. Perhaps Sonic was just too old, or too lazy to care about primal instinct. Or perhaps, Rosy the Rat was too blind, or too naive to worry about fear. Or perhaps... there are no rules when it comes to love within a family Besides cats and cute rodents, rabbits also can make great companions, as Margherita Vitagliano showed with her photo depicting a man named Antonio lovingly looking at a grey bunny perched on his shoulder. Julia Cumes came across a baby elephant that had lost his mother in a flood while documenting a rehabilitation and release program in Assam, India. Cumes spent a lot of time getting to know the orphaned elephant. When it was time for her to leave, the photographer turned around to take one last look at her friend and found him standing on his hind legs and peering out the window at her. She writes: ‘His expression was so strikingly human in that moment and I saw in his eyes something universal and profoundly expressive.’ People’s attitude towards various animals is often dictated by local customs. While in European cities people are used to throwing breadcrumbs for pigeons, photographer StÈphanie Amaudruz writes that in Asia, it is a common sight to see people feed goldfish, often from a baby bottle. The idea is to create harmonious shapes by throwing food in selected spots. For photographer E. Sanchez, foxes make the best of pets. When he was presented with the opportunity to rescue a pair of cubs, he did not hesitate. The younger of the baby foxes, a female, has been living in his home. Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk

CYCLING - Sir Bradley Wiggins won the men’s Time Trial at the British Road Championship in Wales; the women’s road race was won by Laura Trott. IN BRIEF: London Broncos, bottom of Rugby’s Super League, have lost all 18 games this season, conceding 737 points… Australia, the 8-1 on favourite, ridden by Joseph O’Brien, and trained by his father Aidan won the Irish Derby… Neil Robertson beat Joe Perry 10-9 in China’s Wuxi Classic snooker final… and Hickstead’s Equestrian Derby was won by Ireland’s Trevor Breen on a one-eyed horse in a jump off.

Beach Website Proving To Be An Instant Success By Martin Shortland

With the start of the new season in Roquetas comes the start of a new website, dedicated to the beaches of the municipality. It’s designed to help visitors and locals keep in touch with weather conditions, sea temperature, wind speed and UV index. They’ll also be able to view five beaches – Aguadulce, Las Salinas, La Romanilla, Urbanisation and Playa Serena – via webcam. “Since the site went online last week, it’s received over 18,000 visits from people in over 200 countries,” said councillor Francisco Guitierrez, at the official launch ceremony last week. The site operated on a smaller scale last year, but has been updated and improved this year, and he added, “If you consider that last summer, from June to September, there were seven thousand visits, the increase already is remarkable.” He emphasized the importance the council places on constantly improving its service to the visitors and residents of the town. The weather station, which provides half hourly updates, is located at the AWA

Sports Centre, situated on the beach at Las Salinas. Other information provided on the site are jelly fish warnings and the state of the flag systems used to inform beachgoers of sea conditions. Santi Lopez (pictured) said they offer tuition for beginners as well as support for skilled enthusiasts. The Sports Centre has facilities for kite surfing, water boarding and other water sports and is open seven days aweek during the summer season. They supply the equipment and cameras needed for the website, in return for the concession to allow them to use the beach for their leisure activities. To visit the website, go to: playas.aytoroquetas.org
