Nail traps found on rambling route
Photo wins a prize in the Antas photo commpetition!
Hueral Overa local cycling club Indalbike have found a number of home made nail traps hidden on local rambling routes. The traps, large nails hammered into bits of wood before being hidden in the dust (spiky end up) seem designed to stop cyclists, but as the Guardia point out – step on one of these and you could be left too injured to walk home, miles from anywhere. And coming down a hill on a bike at high speed and hitting one of these things could cause a very nasty

F.A.C.E. Start The New Season With A Donation To Little Owls. F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) kicked of the new season of fundraising and donating activities by making a donation of a light weight wheelchair to “The Little Owls” at Hostel Meson in Arboleas. “The Little Owls” is a voluntary, practical support group, who provide emotional and practical support to persons who are living with terminal illnesses, or to those people who are bereaved, and even to people who are simply just lonely. In fact “The Little Owls” will try and assist any one who may need help with in the Arboleas and Partaloa area. “The Little Owls” can provide a listening ear, and also help to talk through any worries a person might have. They can provide information on local services available to those needing further help, and can also offer practical assistance in the form of shopping, ironing and assisting people to visit hospitals or doctors. For those that need it, “The Little Owls” can also provide companionship by dropping in to some ones home, maybe just for a cup of coffee and a chat. They can also provide various bits of equipment i.e. Zimmer frames, commodes and wheelchairs on short term loans. Finally “The Little Owls” can also offer carers, a short break from their caring

Let us look after your home this summer city life. They often feature minimal design and repeated patterns for maximum effect. Mediterranean gardens Mediterranean gardens can be formal or informal, and take their inspiration from the shrubby vegetation of the hot, dry climates of the south of France, Italy and Spain. Gravel is often used between drifts of drought-tolerant plants, including lavender, olive trees, rosemary and vines. This is a style that can adapt well to the British climate, but some Mediterranean plants dislike winter wet and will need protection in a cooler climate. Contemporary gardens Whatever your tastes and lifestyle, there will be a garden design style to suit you

Urban gardens City gardens have to tick lots of boxes, providing outdoor space for planting, relaxation, play and entertaining. Usually in a relatively small area, they need clever designs to make them work well. Most urban gardens become either functional spaces or plant-filled havens into which you can escape hectic

Crisp, clean lines are an intrinsic part of contemporary design, which can be applied to either small or larger gardens. Equally important is the use of space, geometric layout and the absence of too many fussy details and clutter. This all adds up to a garden that could be the perfect antidote to a hectic lifestyle - dynamic yet relaxing. Materials tend to be natural and timeless such as stone, slate and wood, and plants become just one part of the architecture – think clipped hedges, specimen trees and simple blocks of planting. Water is often used to create reflection, movement or sound. Read more on: www.rhs.org.uk

Roquetas Fishermen Want Old Permits Returned By Martin Shortland
Fishermen in the port of Roquetas are planning to take action in order to recover the fishing permits they once held. The Association of Ship Owners based in the port want to reclaim what they call ‘their right’ to catch blue fin tuna, which years ago was one of the main catches. Roquetas was traditionally an important port for tuna fishing, the waters of the Cabo de Gata and the Seco de Olivo provided abundant supplies of the valuable fish. But all that changed fifteen years ago when the quota system was introduced. Severe restrictions were imposed, mainly to protect what was then considered to be an endangered species, mainly caused by over fishing. In the subsequent years, according to President of the Association, Antonio Rodriguez, the blue fin has recovered
Hsh
and it’s now common to see them again as they migrate through the local waters. Talking to me last weekend, he said, “The local fishermen are artisanal, unlike the big boats, we use hooks and line, so we can never over fish any of the larger varieties like tuna.” The large fleets which come into the Mediterranean seeking this valuable catch are not concerned with what damage they cause; they use nets which trawl up everything in the way. He added, “They are only interested in the tuna, everything else they catch is thrown over the side – it’s a terrible situation.” They are often assisted by aircraft and helicopters who can help track the shoals of fish. The local fishermen still use the methods inherited through the generations and they are now bringing pressure on the local authorities to help them. Mr Rodriguez has written to the Fishing Board of Andalucia and also sent a copy to the government in Madrid. As he explained to me, “We only want to be allowed to return to the ways we used to fish for tuna before the restrictions were introduced.”
Another worrying aspect of this story is the number of private boats which are now operating out of the port and catching tuna. It’s against the law and the Guardia Civil has increased the number of patrols checking on small
recreational craft. Last year, over 100 people were caught in possession of tuna at sea and were arrested and subsequently fined. Repeat offenders are liable to a prison sentence if caught again.

This Years Tourism Failure Is Top Of Council Agenda
Macmillan Cancer Support, registered charity in England and Wales (261017), Scotland (SC039907) and the Isle of Man (604). Also operating in Northern Ireland.
By Martin Shortland
The first full meeting of the Council of Roquetas took place last week, after the two month long summer break. The atmosphere in the chamber was charged from the moment prayers ended and the traditional greetings and opening speeches were made. The two main opposition party’s – PSOE and The United Left – had one thing on their minds: Tourism. With the seasons end only a week past, they both tabled a host of questions to the Mayor and his government, regarding what they considered to be the failure of the council to support the tourist industry in the town. Top of the agenda were the ‘all inclusive’ deals being offered by most of the large Urbanisation hotels. Chairman of the Urbanisation Traders Association, and local councillor Marcos Ruiz said the hotels were slowly strangling the life out of the bar and restaurant trade. He accused the council of not wanting to listen to proposals he had put forward last year, attempting to come to an agreement with the hotels over what he called, ‘this very damaging issue of unfair competition,’ which he said, “Will eventually close most of the independent catering businesses in the area”. The government had offered to set up a committee to look into his proposals, but this had so far not been done. He painted a bleak picture of how he envisaged the Urbanisation in five years time, saying, “The hotels only open for the short summer season, they offer cheap, all inclusive deals so holidaymakers never leave the hotels to spend money elsewhere.” Every year, more businesses close because of lack of trade and eventually, he said, “The Urbanisation will resemble a deserted wasteland for eight months of the year.” The ‘all inclusive’ debate has raged every year since the first hotels introduced the deals some five years ago, but it’s hard to see what exactly the council, or anyone else can do about it, it’s not illegal. The hotel chains see it as a way of attracting customers in an ever increasingly competitive market. The fact that the deals have a devastating effect on local bar and restaurant trade is not really their problem. Spokesman for the Association of Hotel Operators, Vincente Ramos says it’s a competitive business and his members are only trying to exist during these difficult times. The holiday season in Roquetas is notoriously short – no more than three months – and opposition councillors wanted to know why the council had failed in some many areas this summer. The refurbishment work in the back streets of the Port was given as an example of what one councillor called, ‘The total disregard for the image of the town at one of the busiest times of the year.’ He was referring to the major works which took place in a large area towards the castle and lighthouse. Writing about it at the time, I questioned the reasoning behind the councils decision to begin the work when they did – right at the start of the tourist season. The whole area resembled a war zone for some seven weeks, with dust, rubble and noise, along with road and pavement closures. Many businesses were forced to close because of the disruption and those seeking compensation from
the council have yet to receive any acknowledgement of their complaints. Why the work couldn’t have been carried out during the winter months is still a question on many peoples lips, but the fact remains, many visitors to the Port during that time must have gone away with a very poor impression of the town. It all ended up as a race against time to get everything completed before the Fiesta began – the subsequent shoddy workmanship is visible to all who care to walk through the affected streets. There were also some major faults with the refuse and beach waste bin collections, which one councillor described as being a disgrace. He said, “Surely it’s not unreasonable to expect the refuse contractors to increase their workforce to cope with the extra refuse produced during the holiday season.” He gave examples of hotels and restaurants having to take their rubbish to other parts of the town in order to find bins which were not full. Clearly this should not have happened in a town which normally prides itself on its waste management system. Tourist figures for the three months, June to August were lower than last year. A spokesman for the towns tourist board says it’s due to a number of reasons: the number of Russian visitors was down substantially, which he said was because of the poor exchange rate between the rouble and the euro. Also, the number of flights from the country were less frequent this year. Although Spanish visitor numbers were about the same, those from Northern European countries were down. He also predicted that the coming autumn and winter visitors could well be lower too. Ultimately, he said, the Europe wide financial crisis was partially to blame. The point was made at the council meeting that Roquetas should be an all year round holiday destination, but in fact, it only operates at close to its full potential for a short period of time. Questions were asked about what the Tourist Board, along with the council were planning to do to promote the town more strongly in the forthcoming year. Councillor Maria Sanchez, Head of Tourism and Leisure, explained they had done considerably more to promote this season than in previous years and had also increased the promotional budget for the next 12 months. As I have reported on these pages on many occasions, it seems glaringly obvious the town is not making the most of its outstanding potential. The weather is about as near perfect as can be found anywhere in the Mediterranean – pretty much for nine months of the year, so why does the Tourist Board and the council find it so hard to bring people here, other than during the summer? The majority of the big hotels in the Urbanisation now close in September, reopening again in May; that can’t be right surely, for a major tourist resort? The council could be in for a torrid time this autumn, as the opposition parties clearly have the bit between their teeth on this subject. Let’s hope for the sake of businesses throughout the town, they can produce some results from all the rhetoric which will no doubt be forthcoming.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014
braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. David, who runs the Albox Computer Club, sent me a very interesting program. Well, interesting to a “TechnoGeek” like me anyway! It was a new program on partitioning. So let’s start the usual way, as taught my all my University Professors – Ask the question that will set the piece. So, in deference to there wisdom I will start with - What is partitioning? Will I ever need to use it? What makes this product different from the hundreds of other partitioning programs already out there that have proven themselves? Partitioning is the process of separating your hard into distinct sections. Think of it as a huge folder. You get yourself several wads of paper and put them all into this folder and you are happy. As time goes on and your notes, sketches and thoughts, start to get a little disorganised and difficult to find. What do you do? Well at University, we were advised to get separators which were simply coloured pieces of card that clipped into place to create separate sections. This is exactly what a partition is, nothing more or less. Having said that, the methods use to make, and record the exact locations and sizes, are a little more involved and beyond the scope of this short article. Having said that - “it just works”. This leads nicely onto the next question which was ‘Will I ever need to use it’? Now the answer to this can be a little thorny in as much as there is no right or wrong answer. If you have window 7 or newer then a certain amount of partitioning has already been done for you without your knowledge or consent. This is done for your benefit and must never be tweaked, tinkered and in any way messed with. Should anything go badly wrong with your system, this hidden partition should contain all the information that is needed to correct the
problem. As this isn’t perfect technology, things go wrong and I have had to repair a windows 8.1 laptop in an endless ‘Repair’ loop. I suggest to everyone that they have a ‘Data’ partition where you will store all your documents, music, videos and family pictures. Also on this partition I would keep a working copy of your system ‘just in case’! Now you will have three (3) partitions. Number 1 is hidden and made by Microsoft to assist in repairs and is essential. Number two (2) is the main Windows 7, 8, 8.1 Operating System, which holds all your programs, applications and ‘Apps’ (a moron’s word if ever there was one!). Finally, there is my suggestion that you have this ‘Data’ partition. By separating your very important data from the less important OS (Operating System) you create a digital safety net that will reduce the chance of loosing your data and should your OS go wrong youw will have your data safe and the opportunity to correct these problems and get on with your life. What makes this program better than any of the others? In a word versatility! Unlike some other programs, “Partition Assistant” (better tell you which one it is) uses ‘Wizards’ to assist in you making the right decisions for you separations. It will also allow you to just ‘dive in’ and use it in an unrestrained manner (with predictably dangerous effects). The thing that I will be playing with, is the section that will allow you to make a working version of Windows on a memory stick – something that Microsoft want you to spend an unreasonably large amount on money to do. It is only a little thing, but I can find dozens of uses for this clever little add-on. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further article that will be useful to you.

space
Neil Armstrong was first to walk on
the moon; Buzz Aldrin followed him fifteen minutes later, immediately getting his name into the record books by becoming the first to pee on the moon. NASA edited the live feed so on Earth people didn’t see Buzz undoing his flies; no seriously the space suits were fitted with special bags designed for that mundane purpose. The special bags were shaped like condoms; NASA designed three sizes for the Apollo astronauts to choose from before they blasted off. Men being men, they all chose LARGE. So to preserve their masculinity the bags were renamed
large, gigantic and humongous. Space has a smell; on the Space Station, astronauts returning from space walks have reported an aroma reminiscent of grilled steak and welding fumes in the airlock. NASA has been unable to replicate the smell on earth. The weird smell is the nearest astronauts get to tasting a steak as the near zero gravity makes liquids rise so they get blocked noses as the mucus rises in their bodies. This makes tasting doubly difficult as not only are they bunged up but food aromas float away before they can reach their taste buds. Earth with our one solitary moon has nothing on Saturn which has over 150 moons. Venus on the other hand is the only planet without a moon. Venus at 462C is the hottest planet in the solar system due to its greenhouse atmosphere being 96% Carbon Dioxide. It’s also the only planet to rotate anti clockwise around the Sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System; it’s two and half times bigger than the rest of the planets combined.
Stat Attack!!!
I think statistics are daft. Personally, I’ve never been a huge number fan and I don’t think that the Nobel Mathematics Prize lot are going to come knocking at my door anytime soon, unless they need directions to Albox. Despite my reluctance to fully embrace statistics, numbers are everywhere you look. Have you noticed how so many people are desperate to quote percentages and other statistical mysteries to us? Having said that, some do make me smile. I was browsing through something last week and stumbled across an article which claimed that in 2012 more than 50000 Americans had received medical attention for injuries related to jewellery. Now that’s a statistic I enjoy and I have to admit to passing a pleasing half hour trying to work out exactly how so many people managed to inflict injuries on themselves with their rings, bracelets and necklaces. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to come up with any answer to that one. Then I came across an advertisement for personalised number plates. I know there are an awful lot of people who spend bucket loads of money on these things, but quite why some of them are worth more than a second hand air bag is beyond me. Apparently, if you are so inclined, you can pay several hundred Euros for number plate SOF 714D. Of course, you recognise this immediately as spelling out Soft Lad…don’t you? No, neither did I, but, whoever paid for that plate is fully deserving of that title. Then there are the silly figures, you know, the ones Economists use and that are, quite frankly, ridiculous. Only last week I was reading somewhere that a particular bank was worth 2 trillion Euros. Do you know what a trillion of anything looks like? No me neither, although there are times aren’t there when you feel like you must have that much in short change in your pockets or purse. Fortunately for us, statisticians have researched this question-of course they have, well what else do they have to do all day. Apparently, if you had the inclination to lay a trillion banknotes end to end, they’ll reach the whole length of whichever check-in queue you’ve just joined at the airport! But you see that’s my point about statistics being daft. Rather than spending ages carefully laying so much money end to end, why on earth don’t they just spend the stuff? The red spot is a storm that’s raged for hundreds of years and is larger than three Earths. One of its 57 moons Ganymede is larger than the planet Mercury. Although Mercury is closest to the sun it’s not the hottest. A Mercury day last six months as it spins very slowly on its axis, so the side facing the sun is hot enough to melt Zinc at 420C whilst the dark side is cold enough at minus173C to freeze Hydrogen. Mars has the tallest mountain in the solar system; its 22,000 metres high, three times higher than Everest. The gravity on Mars is only one third as strong as on Earth so things get much higher. Neptune takes 164 years to orbit the sun and is seventeen times heavier than Earth. It’s the eighth furthest planet from the sun but not the coldest, that award goes to Uranus, the ‘butt’ of so many jokes. The temperature on Neptune is a balmy -200C compared to Uranus being -224C, all year round. That would turn the oxygen we breathe
down here on Earth to ice. Both Uranus and Neptune are about half the size of Saturn and four times larger than Earth. The Sun is already so big a million Earths could fit inside; its 15 million degrees Celsius at the centre as nuclear fusion converts hydrogen into helium. In five billion years it will have burnt all the hydrogen and start on the helium. Over 130 million more years it will expand into a red giant, eventually reaching a size big enough to consume Earth. Once burnt out it will shrink down to the size of our world yet still weigh the same; becoming a White Dwarf. Back down to Earth; in about 140 million years the Earth’s slowing rotation will mean a 25 hour day. All the planets except Earth are named after mythological gods. The Moon is drifting away from us by four centimetres a year so already in my lifetime it’s moved two metres further away.

Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what Acontent is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance
company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.
Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa
We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

News Apartment and Beach Still Preferred Holiday Rental Options
Demand for rented holiday homes in Spain has remained stable during 2014, according to the Fourth Annual Analysis of Trends in Holiday Rentals prepared by the travel website, TripAdvisor. The survey, of 1,200 Spanish users between 28th and 30th July, is not limited to the summer season but aims to reflect the preferences of the traveller for the whole of 2014. In fact, 68% of those questioned said they would choose the holiday rental as their preferred option at any time of the year. “The benefits highlighted by users of this type of accommodation include the freedom they have compared with a stay in a hotel, better prices, more privacy and savings on meals,” said Banca Zayas, head of communications for TripAdvisor in Spain. He added: “However, this year the price has become more important with respect to 2013, now ranking as the third most important factor when choosing a holiday rental.” With regard to the type and location of the properties preferred by Spanish travellers, 55% of those surveyed still choose an apartment and the beach as the most desirable options, and although one week is usually the ideal period for 34% of the respondents, “there has been a slight reduction in the percentage of travellers who choose to rent for two weeks (25%
versus 26% in 2013),” said Zayas. This year’s second choice of length of rental period is “just less than a week or a weekend”, (currently at 26% compared with 20% in 2013). According to the study, other determining factors for renting during the holiday period are a good location (85%), a good environment (81%), that the property has a dishwasher, television or air conditioning (67%), that it be outward facing (59%) or that it has parking available (50%). Meanwhile, El Mundo reported that the online platform HomeAway has also released data on bookings made by its users for the period from June to September 2014, which indicates an increase of almost 11% in the demand for holiday rental accommodation in Spain this summer, compared to the same period in 2013. Among the destinations most requested by Spanish users of this portal are Andalucía (especially Cádiz and Málaga), the Balearic Islands and Valencia. The portal highlighted the continued growth in the Spanish interest for this type of accommodation for the summer season (representing 20%), exceeded only by the number of requests made by French travellers (35.4%) and Germans (22%). POWER OF ATTORNEY
Question: My parents are in very bad health and are thinking of moving back to the u.k. I understand that they could sign an authorization to me for me to deal with the sale of their property when a purchaser has been found. If this is the case what do we need to do? Answer: Yes, it is perfectly possible for your parents to issue you with a power of attorney to deal with the sale of the property. To achieve this you would normally go to a solicitor, who will organize the signing at the notary of the necessary document. Your parents would need to assist at the notary with their passports and a translator (which would normally be organized by the solicitor). The solicitor will send the instructions (minuta) to the notary with the faculties that need to be included. Please note that the power of attorney cannot be used after the person that granted it has deceased. If your parents had already moved back to the u.k. then the solution would be a dual column , dual language power of attorney prepared by a Spanish solicitor in Spain that your parents could sign in front of a notary in the u.k. Before the document is valid in Spain it would need to have the Hague´s Apostille attached to it. Michael Davies. Abogado.

From Sequins to Sunshine book
“We were like two expectant parents waiting for all our babies to arrive.” Lorna qualified as a dance teacher when she was 17 and she soon became the owner and principal of an extremely successful dance school in Brighton with classes as diverse as Latin American, freestyle disco, country and western as well as the more traditional ballroom dancing. “ I ate, slept and dreamt dancing.” Once she was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in 2007 she was forced into giving up dancing so Lorna and partner, Alan had to consider other options. Alan was happy to emigrate to Florida. “ I think Alan would have been perfectly happy to sell CocoCola in Sea World.” And the second choice? Spain of course. Andalucia to be exact, a popular home for budding expat writers and farmers. Breeding alpacas was seen as a lucrative business. You might remember Alan Parks’ book which also documented their move to The Olive Mill in Cordoba province with their virtually insurmountable complications over their car and livestock as well as their solar energy. Whilst there is some overlap-after all they did share this experiencethe stories are not identical but do complement each other. My advice is not to read them together otherwise you might
experience a bit of deja vu. Lorna initially set up a blog, encouraged by numerous friends as a way of keeping in touch which reads like a diary, spilling out her heart and emotions of the risks taken in adopting a hermit-like existence, thwarted at every crossroad with unceasing obstacles. She admitted that “nothing is plain sailing” and wearing her heart on her sleeve had made her vulnerable to emotional outbursts and fits of depression. Life plods along nicely for a while then there are plenty of setbacks. Losing a cria, then its mother when you are
by Lorna Penfold
attempting to breed alpacas as in the sad case of Back Dancer can transform the stalwart into an emotional wreck. When the alpacas first arrived at The Olive Mill there was so much elation. They were quickly mated and the air of expectancy was optimistic before disaster struck. Alan had to remind Lorna: “ If you have livestock, you are going to have deadstock.” As well as the managerie of cats, dogs, domesticated and strays, Marybelle the pig and numerous fowls, there are some delightful accounts of day-outs to Malaga and Fuengirola and Cordoba, the Mezquita and the Jewish Quarters with the infinite Spanish fiestas and expat barbecues who share the same dream of breeding alpacas. Then of course there are frequent visits from family and friends to endear you to want to share Lorna and Alan’s life here in Montoro, the good times and the bad ones. “Are we bonkers?” “Yes, maybe we are! Let’s call it an adventure……………….” Available as an ereader from Amazon. REVIEW
N C
pause for thought
25
“Don’t be indebted to anyone, except in your obligation to love them.” So wrote St Paul in his letter to the Christians in Rome; and what wise advice indeed. For of course we’ve all seen in recent years the danger of allowing debt to escalate, as a little more care in that regard would have prevented the immense damage caused to so many by the recent recession. But the second, more positive part of his advice, I suggest, could have even greater impact, if only we’d all really love each other, recognising the debt we have in this regard. It’s so easy and natural to put myself and my interests before those of others, but in his letter, St Paul remind us that this attitude indicates a lack of love. So I ask myself:- Would I deliberately hurt someone I love? Would I use them? Would I cheat them or steal from them? Of course not! On the contrary I’d happily work without charge to help those I really love, and freely forgive their misdemeanours. And that’s just how St Paul says I should treat everyone. How much happier and more at peace our World would be, if only we could really love others in this way – never worrying about the slights we receive, but only concerning ourselves with the welfare of others. An impossible dream? Well perhaps; but Paul does offer some help. For he continues his theme, reminding us that our ultimate goal isn’t here in this World, but in heaven, and that time therefore is very much of the essence. For if this life is all we have to look forward to, then of course our love for others will be somewhat limited. But as soon as we broaden our horizons and see this brief existence in the context of eternity, then suddenly our immediate self-interest seems trivial and the need to reach out in love to those around, whilst yet we have time, becomes the natural response to the incredible love we see God continuously showing us. Another Blockbuster To Be Filmed In Almeria By Martin Shortland
Less than a year after director Ridley Scott and his ‘Book of Exodus’ production crew left the region, another major Hollywood film is set to start work here next month. ‘Clavious’ is a biblical thriller with a detective twist and follows the quest of a Roman centurion – Clavious – who has been tasked by Pontious Pilate to find the body of Christ, after rumours of the resurrection threaten to fuel a revolt in
Jerusalem. The filming began last month in Malta and the production team will arrive here in mid October. Various locations around Almeria will be used over a six week period, although the majority of the action will take place on a set now being constructed in the Hoya Park, close to the walls of the Alcazaba. A thousand extras will be needed for the filming of two battle scenes and auditions are scheduled to take place

in the Moises Ruiz Pavillion between 25th and 28th September. Best known for his productions of, ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’ and ‘Waterworld,’ American filmmaker Kevin Reynolds directs an impressive cast list, headed by Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love) who takes the lead role as Clavious. Tom Felton (Malfoy in the Harry Potter series) will play Pontious Pilate. Maria Botto takes the role of Mary Magdelane and Leonor Watling plays Sarah, the mistress of Clavious. A team of 50 skilled workmen from the set construction company, Crazy Factory, has been working for a month, recreating the barracks, the centrepiece of the battle scenes. The company also constructed many of the sets for Exodus. Other scenes will be filmed inside the Citadel and also on the beach at San Jose, Cabo de Gata. The shooting time has been extended by two weeks as some of the sequences planned for Malta have now been moved to Almeria. More and more major studios are using the area for location work and it may seem to the uninitiated that the rugged landscape and temperate climate is the reason why so much filming is done here: that’s true to a certain extent. But it’s for the technical ability of the film support industry based
in Almeria which brings productions here from all over the world. The modern infrastructure and up to date audiovisual company’s provide state of the art backing to visiting film crews. Revenue generated by the film for the region is estimated at being in excess of 6 million euros. Back in March, the President of The Andalucia Film Commission Carlos Rosado, used ‘Exodus’ as a prime example of the economic impact a production can generate. Hence the importance of bringing further film shoots to the region, “A task in which Almeria is a pioneer,” he said. The president was in Almeria to announce an 80,000€ joint initiative with the Almeria Tourist Board, to create a tour of the locations used in the province for ‘The Book of Exodus.’ It will be opened in December to coincide with the premier of the blockbuster. Also included in the tourist route and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the filming of the first so called ‘spaghetti western’, will be a visit to the desert locations in Tabernas, where the filming took place. A Fistful of Dollars was the first in a trilogy of low budget films directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood. A video will also be released to promote the route.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014
www.soltimes.com
gravity and folding in on itself, and I wondered how one plastic nut would manage to hold up four arms laden with wet washing, bearing in mind the sleekness of the central pole. I quickly discovered – it doesn’t! As it stood in our back garden all flopsadaisical I could imagine that as a work of modern art it was probably worth millions; however, as a functioning washing line it wasn’t worth its component parts. As we say in the southwest ‘Andsome is what ‘andsome does, and this ‘andsome wasn’t doing anything! I called for reinforcements, and Pete appeared, armed with a Jubilee clip. ‘That’ll keep it up!’ he prophesied, as he tightened the clip in a stranglehold around its throat. It did, for the first load of washing. But by the second load its artistic temperament and lack of moral fibre had re-
asserted itself; the clip had slipped down, the arms had folded inwards, and the washing sagged in sad and soggy folds. By now I was less than enamoured with it; I would go so far as to say I was peeved. I voiced my dissatisfaction emphatically over the wall to Andy next door, who galloped to the rescue, upended the offender in order to get a better grip on it, pushed the clip back up, gave it a stern talking-to and replaced it in its holder. It retaliated in style – Instead of falling down, the arms popped off the top! Defiantly it hung, arms akimbo, washing dragging the gravel, like a mutant but nevertheless elegant, windmill. I was beyond swearing. My rage was deep, silent and implacable. I will not be defied by a household object; I will get that washing line up, or perish in the attempt! I’m going to stick a couple of screws through its gizzard – that should josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk learn it!

Thinking Outside the Box
We were talking recently about the commercials we remember from those far off days of the late fifties and early sixties. The ones where the jingles were so catchy, some of us Baby Boomers still hum them today. Murray Mints; Esso; Macleans Toothpaste; Coates Cider and Rael-Brook Shirts to name a few. Then there were those old black and white television programme; legends of the time such as Take Your Pick, I Love Lucy, Armchair Theatre, No Hiding Place and Wagon Train, And for the younger viewers, those great Saturday tea time series: Robin Hood, William Tell and The Buccaneers . . . they don’t make heroes like Dan Tempest anymore. We listed off twenty or so programmes that we remembered and the thing that struck me was the variety that was available, even though there were just two channels to choose from. Reviewing some of those vintage programmes, it was a surprising reminder just how many of the young actors went on to become stars, like Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood, but also sad to think of those who are no longer with us, such as Robert Shaw and Dennis Weaver. It was a natural progression I suppose, to compare these oldies with some of the dross that we see today not to mention the endless

repeats. But it’s not all bad of course especially as we seem to view the past through deeply rose tinted spectacles much of the time, but when we watched an episode from the new series of Through The Keyhole introduced by the aptly named Keith Lemon, it made us long for the days of David Frost and Loyd Grossman. The emphasis then was on the home and the celebrities themselves, now it seems it’s all about Mr Lemon. The soaps, if you are into that sort of thing, have definitely improved beyond recognition as far as the quality of acting is concerned, although they still drink non-existent tea from empty mugs and chew exaggeratedly after putting morsels of food the size of a gnats kneecap into their mouths. And I wish they would put a bit more effort into taking the actors through the rudiments of the trade or profession they are portraying. A ‘chef’ in one of them gives the impression that buttering bread would be a challenge. Talking of chefs, the celebrity varieties make me laugh out loud sometimes, not at their jokes or indeed their tasty creations, but at some of the exotic ingredients with unlikely sounding names and which most of us have never heard of and are even less likely to find in a branch of Tesco’s. There was that cheeky chappie Gino D’Acampo this week on his Italian Escape series - which I find fascinating, as much for the beautiful Italian scenery as the cooking - knocking up a massive Florentine steak creation which to be fully authentic he told us, should be served up on a wooden chopping board. What he doesn’t have to do of course is to wash the damn thing
afterwards nor indeed does it fall onto him to scrub the grill, clean the utensils or generally get involved in the kitchen in any way after he has created his masterpiece. And that goes for all of them. James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen looks like a hand grenade has been lobbed in after each programme, and where is he? Winging down the motorway in one of his vintage Ferrari’s leaving the hapless BBC cleaners to put it all back together in time for James and his two vandal guest chefs to give it some more of the same treatment next week. But I still watch and marvel at the food they prepare. It’s just that the likes of you and me who live in the real world will weigh up the amount of shopping and washing up we will have to do if we decide to attempt one of their recipes. As often as not I’ll decide to simply not bother and just stick to a roast chicken again. It’s less trouble that way. One programme I do enjoy is Grand Designs. Mind you I don’t know if it’s included to make for good television or that the individuals who are renovating the properties are duffers at maths, but I find it hard to believe that in almost every case they manage to go over budget. Not small amounts either, but one hundred, two hundred, sometimes three hundred grand. And how do they get hold of such vast amounts of money anyway, especially the ones who look as if they have just come out of the sixth form. Still credit where credit is due. Without them many historic houses that would otherwise have been lost forever, are now restored to their original splendour.
John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
That’ll Learn It
As soon as I released the new whirligig washing line from its restraining plastic cover its arms flopped open, enveloping the top half of me in a determined embrace of metal and line. Gently and patiently I untangled one arm from my head and neck only for another to wind itself around me in a display of misplaced affection. Eventually I overcame this aluminium octopus, straightened its arms and unknotted its line, though how line that is tied at both ends can get a knot in it is a mystery to me. I pushed the arms up and tightened the plastic nut that holds them in place on the central pole. This single nut prevents the whole lot from obeying
alqueria
35
viewpoint Smile, your in Alqueria
The air in the tunnel was dangerously low in oxygen, methane was building up at an alarming rate. At least the removal of excavated earth was progressing well. The final breakthrough was approaching. One last thrust with the improvised shovel, a small avalanche of dry earth and then sunlight, fresh air and freedom. This is how one group of tourists managed to get out of Alqueria with at least some cash still in their possession. The new tourist initiative by the Alquerian establishment was built on a firm foundation of fantastic fabrications and outright lies. On paper Alqueria appeared to be the French Riviera with free beer and dancing girls, in reality it was Scunthorpe on a wet Sunday. Holidaymakers were lured to the village republic with false promises and rigged climatic data. Once there the borders were closed, prices trebled and the unfortunate visitors relieved of their cash and all portable wealth. The system was simple, pick them up from a charter flight at Murcía airport. Drive them into Alqueria. Keep them there until their wallets and tempers had been exhausted. Then drive them back to the airport where the expected return flight never materialises. The Spanish authorities didn’t mind Alquerians passing through their country as long as they didn’t touch anything on the way. Keeping the holiday makers occupied while their cash was being surgically removed was simple enough. Remitroot whisky rendered most of them incapable of logical thought while rigged gaming machines accounted for the rest. Manuela was the main attraction as tourist hostess, she was certainly worth a second look. She brought a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘package holiday’.
As far as complaints were concerned Loco Paco was given the job of Customer Relations Representative. He refused to answer any query without first consulting his imaginary five foot tall pet rodent, Bert. Complainees went away confused, bewildered and in some cases sorry for Paco, but they went away which was the object of the exercise. Visitors soon began begging in the streets, some formed escape committees. Tunnels were started. One group was seen using a vaulting horse, but Rodriquez had already seen that film. A glider was found in an attic and one couple tried to cross the border disguised as a female alpaca. Unfortunately a male alpaca in quizzical mood was roaming on the other side. The couple are still receiving counselling. Those that made it out of Alqueria were forced to commit petty crime in order to pay their way home. The summer tourist season ended with bumper profits for Alqueria. Alqueria now headed the international blacklist for tourist destinations. Some countries were so outraged at the treatment of their nationals they threatened military action.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that
tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Lifestyle Enclosures have been offering fly free areas since 2005. From a pool to a patio or a terrace to a balcony, they are the areas leaders in fly screening. Without the loss of your views, outdoor areas can be screened against flies, wasps, mosquitoes and other flying insects. With a choice of frame colours and many options of screening available they can transform a terrace into a bug free dining and relaxing area. If it’s a door or window that you need screening, give them a call as they offer many different options including roller, plisse and sliding. They are also the area’s leading installers of Glass Curtain systems. They are so versatile and keep your terrace free of dust, wind and rain, making a space that is useable all year round. No frames to spoil your view and if your urbanisation will not allow standard glazing on external terraces, ask Lifestyle to give you a quotation for a frameless system. Other glazing systems of windows, doors and Enclosures are also available. With many options, why not call into the showroom to discuss your requirements. Now distributors for Dumaplast why not visit the showroom to view the full range of products. Dumalock – re vamp your bathroom without re tiling. Dumawall and Dumapan – Wall panels offering sleek designs, useful for covering damp areas so common in Spanish properties. The high temperature, humidity and the infamous no second cut from fairway to rough, made this a real test of the ability of the players to keep the ball on the now very narrow fairways, even a couple of feet of the fairway either resulted in a lost ball or no option but to chip back on to the fairway.

Neighbours Rebel Against Night Time ‘Noise Pollution’ By Martin Shortland
A long running battle between the residents of an apartment block and the bar owners who trade below, looks to have reached a new level of animosity. Right next to the beach, the popular Calle Antonio Machado in Roquetas, with its numerous bars and restaurants, attracts large numbers of visitors throughout the year and is especially busy during the summer season.
to monitor noise levels emitted by the bars concerned. In every case, the readings were more than three times the legally permitted levels.
doors open at night because of the noise disturbance and this can be very uncomfortable during the hot weather.
Most of the clientele live in the town and have few choices as to where they can go. Barman Raul Leon explained the situation to me at the weekend, he said, “The young people of Roquetas don’t have much choice as to where they can go and have a good time, these five bars are really all there is.” The bars have all been in existence – in one form or another - for almost as long as the buildings; over twenty years now, but it’s only recently that residents have started to make their feelings known about the late night noise.
Paco Morelles, owner of Bar Manaza said they – the bar owners – were doing all they could to come to a compromise with the complaining residents. He pointed out the council granted the licences for their premises and in every case, these were renewed on an annual basis. He also said the report by the independent noise control company was actually compiled during the ports Fiesta of Santa Ana, saying, “We are granted special licences for the five days of the fiesta, allowing us to have large sound The council recently introduced systems and DJ’s on the terraces, but a new by-law to try to counteract this is only once a year.” the problems caused by bars and He said that normally, they had to restaurants having televisions and adhere to the councils noise pollution music speakers outside on their law and considered that these were terraces. In general, it would appear followed closely by each of the bars to have had little effect. On a tour concerned. I certainly got the feeling along the Calle Antonio Machado at that the bar owners were trying their the weekend, all the establishments best not to cause any trouble – after had televisions or speakers in operation and in some cases, both. In most cases, the volume levels were at a very reasonable level and could only be heard by customers using the premises. In my opinion, they didn’t seem to be causing any problems.
One resident told me there was now a full scale war between the residents and bar owners, saying, “For too long we have put up with the noise and disturbances from the bars, it has to stop and we want the council to do something about it.” The residents association – led by the architect who designed the building – has recently employed an independent company
However, two of the bars catering for the younger customers did have loud music playing; it could be heard from some distance away and I would imagine, by the residents living above. The residents are claiming they are unable to have windows and patio
But in recent years, a number of the bars who cater for the younger generation, have increased the level of music they play, so much so that people living in the apartments above, have been forced to take a stand. The five bars concerned are Bar Tequilla, Goa, Marea, Jasmine and Manzana. They are frequented by the 18 to 30 age groups and music is an important part of the ambiance.
Emilio Sanchez, owner of a property above Bar Tequilla, has been forced to spend time away from his home because of the noise, he told me, “I’m fortunate in having another small property in the hills near Guadix and during the summer months, I go there to get away from the disruption here.” He said it was especially bad at the weekends when the bars seemed unconcerned about the time they closed, saying, “Often it’s five or six o’clock in the morning when they close and the noise is unbearable.”

all, they have their livelihoods to consider. Any continuous flaunting of the law would see their licence revoked, meaning a heavy fine, a period of enforced closure along with the subsequent loss of income. It was pointed out to me more than once that people should not buy properties above bars if they were looking for a quiet location. Even some of the original owners who’ve been in residence since the buildings were completed have known what the intended use of the properties would be. They are all designated as being for commercial catering and licensed use, which is exactly what they all are. I suspect there will be no quick solution to this situation. The residents feel they are being hard done by and aren’t receiving help from the council. The bar owners are trying to earn a living while doing all they can to stay within the laws set out by the council. Tricky.
