Iberia robs Barcelona of transfer hub reign British-owned airline Iberia has announced it is not planning to offer any long-haul flights from Barcelona’s El Prat airport and focus instead on Madrid Barajas, a decision which has not yet been linked to Catalonia’s separatist bid. IAG CEO Willie Wash announced on Monday that Spain’s top airline has no plans to operate international flights from and to El Prat, despite it already being an important hub for flights between Spain and South American countries. “They’re not sustainable routes,” Walsh argued during an interview in Washington at the inauguration of the new A380 British Airways flights between the American capital and London. “It’s very easy for these airlines (British Airways, Vueling and Iberia) to grow but not in a profitable way, and that’s our objective.” “For Iberia, the most efficient model is to
focus all its long-haul flights on Madrid as a hub.” The Irish businessman added that IAG would only operate from “El Prat if we think the routes will be profitable”, also stating that the group’s low-cost airline Vueling will soon have fewer routes to and from the Catalan capital. With 7.5 million tourists in 2013, Barcelona surpasses every other city in Spain in visitor
numbers. Its economy reaps the financial rewards of an industry some locals claim is out of control and other believe could provide economic stability if Catalonia were to break away from Spain. Local daily La Vanguardia reported the news on Monday without making any reference to possible links to the political turmoil stemming from November 9th’s planned vote on independence for Catalonia. One way or another, IAG’s decision is likely to push El Prat down in the ranking of Europe’s busiest airports (currently in 10th place, Barajas in sixth) and reduce the more than 35 million passengers it received in 2013. As American Airlines CEO Doug Carter put it “For us Barcelona airport is a destination point, not a stopover hub”. Source: www.thelocal.es

Accessories ranging from flowers in a contemporary vase to art pictures hanging on your walls, all add the finishing touches to any room. Above all, accessories add personality to a room, they inject your own personal touch making your home unique to you and comfortable and inviting for you and your family. Your accessories tell a story about you to guests. Plus, they make your home more inviting and comfortable for you and your family – everyone likes being surrounded by things they love. While there are a few basic principles for arranging accessories, you don’t need a degree in interior design to get great-looking results. Experiment, and don’t be afraid to try something different. After all, rules are made to be broken, and what’s most important is that the arrangements satisfy you! Getting Started Sort through your hand-me-downs, heirlooms, collectibles or other unrelated pieces to determine what you want to use. Old pictures, keepsakes tucked away in storage, and anything that is important to you adds personality to your home’s décor. If you plan to add large pieces of art to your room, plan for this early in your design scheme. Large pieces of art and collections can have major impact on a room’s décor. Achieving Balance Balance keeps arrangements from looking lopsided. Balanced arrangements can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical arrangements are perfectly equal on both sides of a central line, are the easiest to arrange and create a more formal atmosphere. If you have a variety of pieces in different sizes, shapes and colours, try an asymmetrical arrangement. Asymmetrical
arrangements create an informal look by balancing the visual weight of the objects. Decorating With Art You will be surprised at the important role that art pictures play in home decor accessories. Not only do pictures add your own personality into the room, they absorb noise and can actually help change the illusion of a rooms’ shape if placed in the right places. ~ Horizontal landscape pictures help widen a room ~ Portrait floral pictures help give the illusion of height ~ One large picture reflected through a mirror gives the sensation of additional broader space. Whatever your artwork includes – valuable prints, family photographs, or originals from your kids – you want it to capture people’s attention. Large paintings are more effective when displayed alone on walls. However, small pieces have more impact when grouped together. When choosing frames, coordinate with other existing frames and the overall look of the room. Buy quality frames and make sure there aren’t any gaps at the corners and check the finish for flaking or discoloration. Create Illusions With Mirrors Mirrors are great to help create the illusion of space. By cleverly placing mirrors on an adjacent wall to a picture or something that is interesting in your room, will reflect the image and add a sense of space. For darker rooms, hang a decorative mirror near a window. The light will then bounce off the mirror into the room portraying more natural muchneeded light back into the area. To give the illusion of depth in a room paint one of your walls in a darker contrasting color to your other walls. Then hang a mirror on that darker wall. This instantly between Amigos Bowling & Mora oil, gives the additional sense of depth poligono industrial, arboleas to the dimensions of the room. Clifford, serially abandoned Clifford is a lovely, friendly little dog but had always been very much left to his own devices and he was a regular visitor to the Playa Serena Golf Course. He became very wellknown and wandered around at will. He was obviously not welcome at home and he learned to take care of himself. Then he was sent by his owners to a house with a large garden and a number of other bigger dogs. Poor Clifford had to fight for his meals and he did not stay there very long. He became very adept at begging for food around the golf course. It all probably became too much for him and he set off for pastures new. He was discovered miles from home near the village of La Mojonera. Perhaps he had heard of the dog shelter there and wanted to book in! He was picked up by a concerned Caroline and Paul

Johnson who took him back to the Golf Club. By asking around they found out roughly where he lived. Enquiring house to house, they eventually delivered him back to his owners. However he was not given the warm welcome one would expect and he was soon wandering the streets again. Once more his aforementioned saviours found him wandering around the streets of La Mojonera. They realised that he was not welcome at home and brought him to the writer of this article who managed to secure him a place at the shelter, ‘SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR’. His whole story was not known at the time and it was also not realised that he was chipped. The shelter’s vet examined him and found the chip. At this stage the shelter thought that this was job done. They contacted the owner who however was not at all overjoyed at the news of Clifford’s reappearance. The owners visited the shelter some days later and eventually signed over the dog to the shelter. It was the consensus of opinion that this was after all the best thing for Clifford. Now Clifford is free to be adopted by a loving new owner who will take care of him and give him the home he deserves. If you want to adopt Clifford or any other dog, you can contact the shelter via Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com

News towards foreign residents, far below the global average of 13%. Spain was rated 23rd in the world for ease of linguistic integration but 71 percent of expats said it was easy to learn Spanish and 79 percent claimed they could speak it.
Spain ranked world’s 7th best expat destination A survey by networking community InterNations has ranked Spain 7th-best in the world for foreigners according to criteria including quality of life, finance, ease of settling in and work-life balance.
Luxembourg – which scored highly on career opportunities – and Mexico.
The ‘Expat Insider’ report was based on the average of a number of sub-indices, including the General Quality of Life Index, Ease of Settling In Index, Working Abroad Index, Family Life Index and the Personal Finance Index.
Spain scored highly on factors such as personal safety (94 percent satisfaction) and political stability (79 per cent considered it stable), well above the worldwide averages of 85 per cent and 46 percent respectively.
Respondents were also asked, “How satisfied are you with life abroad in general?”, which was weighted heavily in the overall country ranking.
It topped the charts in terms of making newcomers feel welcome (82 percent positive) but was rated only 11th in terms of friendliness. This may explain why just 59 percent responded positively when asked if it was easy to make friends in Spain. Only 5 percent of expats reported an unfriendly attitude
Ecuador was the surprise winner, boosted by expats’ high levels of satisfaction with their own personal financial situation there, followed by
The worst countries to live, according to the report, were Greece, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Google to launch start-up campus in Madrid
The US tech giant will set up a new Google Campus in the Spanish capital in 2015 in a bid to help budding entrepreneurs launch their very own tech start-ups. Google are calling it a “new home for innovation” in Spain, a country where entrepreneurial spirit and the lack of state support provided to self-starters have been a matter of debate during the country’s economic crisis. The American multinational announced on Monday that its third European campus after London’s and Tel Aviv’s will grant “unparalleled access to mentorship and trainings led by their local start-up community, experienced entrepreneurs, and teams from Google.” “We decided to open a Campus in Madrid because of the thriving
entrepreneurial spirit in Spain,” Google wrote in its European blog. “We have seen the booming entrepreneurial community in Spain and are excited to join the local community in making it even stronger. In an interview with online Spanish daily Cinco Días, Google’s Director of Entrepreneurship Mary Grove said the London Campus had “helped 70,000 participants, set up 274 new start-ups, generated €43,31 million ($54M) in earnings and created 575 jobs, all in two year and a half years”. Grove denied the search giant had chosen Madrid to try to win over the Spanish government over recent tax-dodging claims and other issues involving privacy and antitrust laws. Source: www.thelocal.es
The country’s medical care and infrastructure for transport and travel were rated highly but Spain was in the bottom five globally for expat earnings, when compared with previous income. In the Working Abroad category overall, Spain was ranked a dismal 55th out of 61. Overall, some 45 percent of expats in Spain said that they were satisfied with life. 34 percent described themselves as “completely satisfied” with their social lives and less than 1 percent commented negatively on the local weather. Family friendliness scored highly. Only 1 percent of respondents reported having experienced an unfriendly attitude towards families with children and only 2% of participants in Spain viewed the state of children’s health and safety to be in danger. According to InterNations, “This deviates heavily from the 11% of respondents globally who believe this to be the case in their countries of residence.” 19 percent of expats said that they had moved to Spain for ‘better quality of life’ and were seemingly rewarded: Spain topped all other countries except Switzerland on the Quality of Life index. them just for special occasions. ◦ Buy yourself one set of the most sumptuous bath towels you can find. There’s nothing more luxurious than using a rich, thick towel after your morning shower, especially if you’re getting ready for a busy work day. ◦ Schedule a “Me Day.” Plan a day where you do some of the things you may dream about doing during your morning commute to work. Browse in an antique shop. Take a nap in your backyard hammock. Catch an afternoon matinee. ◦ Go to a local department store and get a free makeover at the make-up counter. ◦ Treat yourself to a natural body or facial scrub. Combine it with a scented bubble bath. ◦ Take a walk. ◦ Get a massage and a pedicure. When your feet feel good, you feel good all over. ◦ Another stress relief is connecting with a friend – take a walk together, make an unscheduled phone call or send a letter or e-mail just to chat. You might consider helping a friend who is stressed by putting together a “pampering” gift basket. Read more on: powertochange.com

Can a bubble bath reduce your risk of heart disease? Could a manicure ease your asthma symptoms or a soothing massage prevent your next cold? Simple, stress-reducing activities could have a positive impact on your health. Doctors have long known that stress plays a large role in the health and well being of all of us. Chronic stress, in particular, can have long-term effects on your health, contributing to everything from muscle aches and irritable bowel syndrome to an increased risk of stroke and heart disease. The foundation for a less-stressful life has its roots in the basics of good health exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and get enough sleep at night. In addition, eliminate or reduce bad habits, such as smoking or overindulging in alcohol. Here are some easy, inexpensive ways that Henderson and Dunkelman recommend to pamper yourself: ◦T reat yourself to some fresh flowers. Keep them on your desk at work or on your nightstand at home. ◦ Buy a new shade of lipstick. ◦ L ight candles in your house. Don’t save

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2014
braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Windows 10!! Whatever happened to windows 9? If you’ve been looking forward to Windows 9, the OS that will fix what Windows 8 got wrong, you’re in for a surprise: There will be no Windows 9. Instead, Microsoft announced it will proceed directly to Windows 10. “The Windows 9 internal beta was a phenomenal success,” said Microsoft PR rep Cheryl Tunt. “I mean, it blew Windows 8 out of the water, and as we all know, “Windows 8 is nigh flawless”. After discussion at the C level, Microsoft has decided it will not mess with success and will leave Windows 9 exactly as it is. As such, work is now getting under way on Windows 10, which should see a public release.” As some of you may have already read elsewhere on the internet this was in reality a ‘Mickey take’ by some internet wag! The natural name would have been Windows 9, but Microsoft is eager to suggest a break with the past. “We’re not building an incremental product,” said Terry Myerson, head of Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group. Which can be translated to “Yeah, we messed up with Windows 8 and the 8.1 update wasn’t much better, so be have better pass Windows 9 and let everyone think that Windows 10 is a whole new beast”. I have a copy of the technical release version of windows 10 and will be installing it when the work gets a little quieter, usually about Wednesday. So by The next article I should be able to offer a brief outline of this version for everyone to read. I have said, should windows 9 have the usual interface that we all love and understand, I will pay good money for it! Well I will be able to tell you all
next week if that statement holds true for the new Windows 10! Is there a start menu? There is, and it tries to combine the familiarity of Windows 7 with the modern interface of Windows 8. That means the menu is split: On the left, apps are displayed in the familiar Windows 7 style, while on the right are more colourful “live tiles” that open the modern, Windows 8-style apps. The start menu is customizable, so you can resize the tiles and move them around, and make the start menu tall and thin or long and flat. According to the writers that Microsoft favour (and for some unfathomable reason, I’m not one of them!), You will have all the familiar bits of Windows 7 (Hurrah) and the integration that will be required for MS Windows to become the standard Operating System for any and all other devices (telephones, washing machines – yep I did say washing machines, in fact anything that will allow Microsoft to dominate the world). Now for the €60K question – How much will it cost? To an honorary Yorkshireman like me, this is a question of paramount importance. Will it be free (wiping tears of laughter from face), highly unlikely. Will it be €64K – No-one would look at it, (wiping even more tears from face) let alone buy it! So I would suggest that it would be in the €75 - €190 slot. I know that this is a hugely safe bet but my crystal ball needs new batteries and I just can’t afford them right now! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

Francisco Franco an early history Until November 1975 Spain was ruled by a dictator who styled himself Caudillo de España, por la gracia de Dios, or Leader of Spain by the grace of God we know him as Francisco Franco. A through and through military man, Franco was born into a naval family at the El Ferrol naval base Galicia in 1892. He aspired to be a naval officer but after the Americans obliterated the Spanish navy in Cuba and the Philippines in 1898; budget cuts forced him to join the infantry academy in Toledo instead aged 15. He married Carmen Polo a devout catholic in 1923. Franco volunteered to serve in the Moroccan Rif War; rising rapidly through the ranks he became in turn the youngest ever captain, major and colonel. Aged just 33 he became the youngest general in Europe since Napoleon Bonaparte and commanded the Spanish Legion in 1926; winning 13 medals along the way. During his tenure in clear defiance of the Geneva Convention signed in 1924; mustard gas, phosphene and other chemicals were used against the Berber
Carry on Dongling!
That’s the problem with new technology, it just tries to take over your life. Often with some success too. Alarm clocks for example. There’s a new alarm clock and its sole purpose is to scare the living daylights out of the poor sleeper, shocking him or her into a wide eyed wakefulness. The plan, as I understand it, is to wake the owner with information electronically displayed about their financial health, projected life expectancy or even, and why I’m not sure, the number of “Facebook” friends they have. Now call me a coward but, I really, don’t want to wake up to this, potentially, bad news? Wouldn’t that just encourage you to stay in bed? Well, it would me that’s for sure. But then, I don’t need much encouragement to slack and take a day off work. Nor would it take too much to persuade me to fling the clock at the wall. And that got me reminiscing about teasmaids-well, don’t we all? No? Oh, just me then. Once upon a time people thought that a teasmaid was the bee’s knees when it came to technology in the home. Not only did it wake you up in the morning, it did so, gently, with a welcome cup of hot tea at the ready. Now really, forget things like digital watches or remote control televisions, this was it for cutting edge advancement. Sad really isn’t it? We soon forget don’t we. New advances mean that the friendly teasmaid is a museum piece now, in much the same way as young music lovers of today think that The Beatles aren’t a patch on One Direction. It’s always the same. One day soon a dongle will simply be a word that could have elicited a raised eyebrow reply from Kenneth Williams in a Carry On film. Then there’s Apple. They’ve come up with software that will, through your iPhone, tell you where you’ve parked your car when you experience one of those embarrassing incidents when you just can’t remember where you left it. The software tracks your movements and links the phone to your car. Scary isn’t it? They know what you’re doing and where you are. Talk about take over your life! But this technology hasn’t reckoned on the dim person factor. What, I want to know, do we do when we forget where we’ve put our phone? Answer that one Apple! tribesmen until 1927. It was in revenge for losing 13,000 soldiers at the Battle of Annual. The poison gas was supplied illegally by the German Government. Franco returned to the Spanish mainland where in1934 there was a workers general strike in the mining areas of the Asturias. Fearing the regular army would refuse to attack their own countrymen, the government instead sent Franco’s Foreign Legion to quell the revolt. Murdering, torturing and raping as they went with Moroccan mercenaries castrating the dead, over 2000 people were killed and thousands more injured. In 1936 a general election was held with the Popular Front, a republican government voted in, the last elected government in Spain for the next 40 years. General Franco offered military support to the outgoing Prime minister if he agreed to annul the result. He declined and the new Prime Minister Azańa cleverly moved all the suspect
generals away from Spain, with General Franco posted to the Canary Islands. As military generals planned a coup Franco refused to lend his support gaining the dubious title of Miss Canary Islands for his delay. Franco rightly believed the coup would fail and actually wrote to the prime minister warning of potential catastrophe but Prime Minister Azańa never replied so Franco sided with the plotters. In July the coup started and garrisons across Spain rose up and martial law was declared. Although large areas of western Spain were won by the rebels most of Spain supported the republicans including the main cities of Madrid and Barcelona. Importantly for the republicans the industrial north remained in their hands aiding their struggle. The civil war started as neither side had a clear advantage, about half the armed forces including the air force remained loyal to the government. An aircraft charted
from Croydon by a British MI5 officer, flew General Franco to Morocco to re-join his legionnaires. His 30,000 Legionnaires were stranded as the air force refused to move them to Spain. Hitler sent Junkers 52 transport planes and two battleships to Franco to transport his soldiers to the mainland at Algeciras where they quickly took over much of south west Spain. Franco moved his army towards Madrid and on the way his army defeated the republicans in Badajoz. His soldiers murdered many people including 2000 shot in the town bull ring. The revolt however in Toledo failed and 2000 rebels had been under siege for two months, Franco’s army to rescue them; in the process taking bloody retribution. Atrocities were done by both sides during the civil war; however Franco had a habit of never forgiving or forgetting hence high numbers of casualties both during and long after the war.

Mortgage Showcase at SIMA Autumn 2014
SIMA Autumn 2014 will be held from 24th to 26th October in the Feria de Madrid with mortgage financing at the forefront of the exhibition. Three financial institutions (Bankinter, EVO Bank and ING Direct) have so far confirmed their participation in the event. The availability of mortgage financing comes following official statistics anticipating a gradual stabilisation of the housing market in terms of transactions, prices, mortgages and permits for construction. So far more than 50 companies and institutions are registered to participate in SIMA Autumn 2014 and this figure is expected to increase. Planner Exhibitions, the company organising the exhibition, once again hopes to attract a large number of potential buyers, which has been the main visitor profile of past exhibitions, as confirmed by the testimony of the exhibitors and the Feria’s own statistics, which shows that 97% of the visitors to the fair are searching for a home or other real estate, and 67% of the visitors said it was their intention to buy within a year. SIMA Autumn is aimed at a diverse profile of visitors. The majority of those are the visitors who attend the show in search of a residence (either as a first home or as a change of home), but there are also those who are looking to either purchase a holiday home or who are interested in buying real estate as an investment, and with the participation of

Non-residential products (office, retail, commercial, or land) will also be present at exhibitors’ stands, although to a lesser extent, as well as other related services such as appraisals, valuations, energy certification or rehabilitation, amongst others. The exhibition will be open to visitors on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October from 11 am to 8 pm, and on Sunday 26th October from 11am to 3pm. Source: http://news.kyero.com/

LEGAL CORNER
WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) judgment relating to Spanish inheritance tax. Case C-127/12 establishes that Spain must stop discriminating against non-resident heirs. On the 3rd of September 2014, the ECJ entered/ made a judgment resolving that the Spanish Inheritance Tax imposes restrictions on the free movement of capital, one of the fundamental principles of the EU’s Single Market. More precisely, as stated by the ECJ decision, the aforementioned tax violates article 63 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and article 40 of the Agreement on the European Economic Area. According to Spanish law, non-residents in Spain are not entitled to apply for/take advantage of certain tax allowances set-forth by the different Spanish Autonomous Regions as opposed to Spanish tax residents. Such distinction becomes in practice a much lower effective tax for residents in such Autonomous Regions rather than for other EU residents. Taking into account that resident heirs pay different levels of tax depending on what autonomous region of Spain they live in, in each case we would need to establish to which autonomous region’s tax system we need to compare the specific inheritance by a non resident to see if discrimination has existed. Spain has not adapted it’s legislation yet. The other matter is how do we deal with inheritance tax declarations of those who we consider are being discriminated as returns are done by self assessments and the norms and forms on which they are bases have not change since the sentence. Do we pay and then claim a refund through the courts , or do we disobey the methods of calculation which are still in existence to avoid paying in the first instance with the risk of suffering surcharges etc. Theoretically the correct thing to do is to pay and
then claim, but from a practical point of view I have my doubts. In doubt perhaps it is best not to pay, but only attempt this if you are absolutely sure of what you are doing. Before you do this though you must consult with your solicitor to make sure that in your particular case (and comparing your situation with that of the system of the appropriate Autonomous region) their is in fact a discrimination. To determine which system to compare it with you have to look for the maximum connection. For example if the decease lived and deceased in Andalucia it would be clear that it is with this system that we have to compare, but things will not always be as clear. Ask the solicitor to explain why he is comparing your situation with that of a particular autonomous region and not another and ask him to put this in writing . Then ask him to calculate inheritance tax for you as resident of that particular autonomous region of Spain and then as nonresident. Ask for all this in writing as you will need if to fight your corner with the tax Agencia Tributaria in Madrid who are the ones that deal with inheritance tax for non residents and who will need a well explained reason for allowing the exemptions corresponding to Andalucia to be applied. In any case at this moment in time even if you have been discriminated it will be a battle to avoid payment or return of the payment if this has already been paid. Be careful of claiming if the discrimination does not exist as you may end up paying substantial surcharges and legal costs. Michael Davies. Abogado.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Development, the Spanish housing sector is showing definite signs of recovery. Their data shows that the private housing market moved 22,255.1 million euros in Spain in the first half of 2014, which is an increase of 31% compared to the same period of 2013 (16,976.6 million euros), and maintains a positive trend after accumulating three consecutive years of decline. The 22,255.1 million euros corresponds to the 164,368 private housing transactions which were carried out between January and June. Specifically, private housing resales accounted for 18,554 million euros in the six months to the end of June (an increase of 35%), while for new builds the amount was much lower, at 3,701.1 million euros (up 14.2%). Overseas COMPLETE COMPLETE HOLIDAY HOLIDAY CARE CARE MOJACAR PLAYA Guides - SALES -MANAGEMENT - MAINTENANCE Company WeRENTALS urgently need more properties for sale and rental for waiting clients Celebrates Properties of the week Record Number of Enquires at Leading Expo Appetite for owning an overseas home, particularly in Spain, appears to have surged in the second half of 2014, after the Overseas Guides Company reported a hefty hike in interest in foreign property ownership and an overall feel-good factor at the A Place in the Sun Live exhibition in October. “It’s fair to say we had our best ever exhibition last weekend at Birmingham’s NEC, recording a 38% jump in enquiries compared to typical previous events,” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of the Overseas Guides Company. “Unsurprisingly, Spain has been hugely popular, especially the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, and talking to some buyers we noticed a sense of urgency to buy there while prices are still low. A number of people chatting to our www. SpainBuyingGuide.com team said they had put their plans on hold for a year
or two but now feel it’s time to tap into the Spanish market. That said, there were also people who intend to buy in a year or more’s time, indicating future buoyancy in the market too. “The exhibition seminars, which we contributed to, are another good barometer, so seeing every seat taken and standing room only at many of the sessions was very encouraging. “At the Overseas Guides Company we’re now looking forward to building on the contacts we made at the exhibition and helping people with the next stage of the buying process, which typically will be a viewing trip. And now we have new offices in the Costa del Sol and Portugal’s Algarve, we’re better placed to help people viewing property and completing their purchase.” Source: http://news.kyero.com

Room With A View PROPERTY REF: ARB3VJ02 179,950€
property sales and relocation specialists This immaculate 3 Bedroom Villa is very well located right on the outskirts of Arboleas village, and just a 5 minute walk into the village centre. This stunning property really does impress from the moment you walk in. It is very noticeable that a lot of care and planning has been taken both inside and out with this property and this has produced a home of immaculate presentation and high quality. The swimming pool and terrace to the rear is very private with a large variety of Mediterranean plants and flowers providing a wide contrast of colours and vibrance to this area. There is around 100m2 of terracing here with various areas set up for sunbathing, shade, and al fresco dining, covering all bases. With this in mind there is also an outdoor kitchen and bbq area set back from the terrace and easily accessed from the summer room. The wall has also been carefully built with great thought to preserve the view and privacy. A stonework path then leads into a relax room, which is covered, but open to the sides with billowing white curtains. This room looks across the full width of the gardens and swimming pool area. To the side of this room is an open gravelled area and the double gates leading into the parking area, with mature shrubs and trees along the edge of the property. There is also a staircase up to the roof terrace here offering fantastic views along the valley and to Arboleas village.
Continuing around to the front of the house and the landscaped garden continues, with two volcanic rock beds and established plants flanking the pathway between the front door and the pedestrian entrance gate. Entering the villa you are immediately struck by what can best be described as a genuine homely feel. The entrance hall leads through to a sizeable kitchen to the left, with ample cupboard space, black granite worktops, and quality appliances. An archway from here then leads into the spacious dining room (previously the 3rd bedroom) with the pentagon shaped room drawing in lots of light and giving plenty of space in this room. It could easily be converted back into a bedroom if desired simply by blocking up the archway to the kitchen. From here double doors with feature red glass open to the living room which has been decorated in a very modern style, and a uniquely designed fireplace is the centrepiece for this end of the room. The owners have furnished the property to have a sitting area, and a TV area, so the there are two distinct sections of the room as the pictures will show. Patio doors then lead out to the summer room/second living/dining area which is a really expansive size, and sliding doors open out from here to the pool and terrace area one way, and to the outdoor kitchen the other. Returning inside to the main entrance hall, there is a spacious family
bathroom with bath and separate shower, plus a door opening directly to the pool area so that there is no need to “drip” through the house from the pool. Another example of the care and thought that has gone into the design of this house. The second bedroom is a good size double room, complete with fitted wardrobes and high level storage. The master bedroom is simply fantastic. Decorated in a stylish silver modern theme this bedroom has lots of wardrobe space, is light and airy, and double doors lead. There is also an en-suite shower room from this bedroom as well. There are so many features to this property it is impossible to list them all, but in short, there are fly screens throughout, Air Conditioning in the bedrooms and living room, a separate relax room, a generous storage casita/workshop, landscaped gardens, outdoor kitchen and barbecue area, slimline eco heaters for the winter, and every detail has been taken care of. This is a superb villa even without considering the location, but the proximity to the village really is the cherry on the cake. This is a villa that will tick the boxes for a large number of people. It really does offer the complete package.

You take it, you pass and then you really start to learn how to drive. Or you crash.” Don’t expect any other pearls of wisdom otherwise you’ll be grossly disappointed. No guesses that Kate and Richard’s marriage has broken down. Recent statistics in the UK show that an alarming 1/2 marriages end in divorce. This is not just about a failed marriage. With hindsight both realise they were too young and become closer when they realise their financial security no longer exists. Time to take action. Written and directed by Joel Hopkins (Last Chance Harvey) “The Love Punch” is uncomplicated but rather contrived as a romantic comedy and as corny as they come. Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Oranges are generally available from winter through summer with seasonal variations depending on the variety.
Seville and blood orange marmalade Ingredients
1.4kg blood oranges 1.4kg Seville oranges 2.25kg granulated sugar 85ml freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 3 tablespoons dark rum 60g dark muscavado sugar
METHOD
Day 1: Slice each Seville orange into eight pieces, and place in a large pan. Pour in enough cold water to cover the orange slices with 1 inch of water so that the fruit can bob freely. Cover, and set aside overnight. Day: 2 Heat the pan with the Seville oranges in it until it begins to boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 hours, stirring every half hour or so (adding more water if necessary to keep the orange slices covered), until the fruit is very soft. Set a sieve over a deep container, and ladle the orange slices and all the juice into the sieve. Cover and let the mixture drain into the container overnight. Slice the blood oranges into quarters, then cut each quarter into thin slices. Place in preserving pan and cover with enough water to submerge the fruit. Bring sliced blood oranges to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain off the liquid, then pour fresh cold water into the pot (enough to cover the orange slices). Bring to the boil again, lower the heat and simmer for 2 hours, stirring as
necessary, and adding more water so the orange slices stay covered. Turn off the heat, cover the pan and leave overnight. Day 3: Combine the juice from the Seville oranges (discarding solids) with the cooked blood oranges in the preserving pan. Stir in granulated sugar and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat and do not stir for about 5 minutes. Add the vanilla, muscavado sugar, and rum; turn down the heat slightly and continue to let it cook at a simmering boil for about 15 or 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes with a wooden spoon, until it is set. It will get thicker and darker in colour - you can test if it has set by spooning a little of the marmalade onto a chilled saucer, letting it cool for 30 seconds, then push your finger across it. If the surface wrinkles, it has reached setting point. If it is still runny, boil the marmalade for a further 2 or 3 minutes, then test again. Turn off the heat but don’t stir it any more. Ladle into sterilized jam jars, and seal with lids. To sterilize jam jars Wash and rinse glass jam jars and lids. Let them dry in a moderate oven (180 degrees C) for 15 or 20 minutes. Clove and orange jellies with cointreau cream Ingredients
12 cloves 12 oranges 1 cinnamon quill 1 cup (220g) caster sugar 4 gold-strength gelatine leaves 1/3 cup (4 tablespoons) Cointreau Cointreau cream 300ml thickened cream 2 tablespoons sifted pure icing sugar 2 tablespoons Cointreau
METHOD
Place a clove in four 1/2-cup (125ml) dariole moulds. Peel the skin and white pith from 6 oranges, then segment each one by holding an orange in your hand (over a bowl to reserve the juice) and cutting segments away from the membrane with a small sharp knife. Divide the segments among the dariole moulds and pack down tightly. Juice 4 oranges and place in a pan with the reserved juice, cinnamon, 120g of
the caster sugar and 4 cloves. Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Meanwhile: soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for 5 minutes. Squeeze out excess water, then add to the warm juice with 2 tablespoons of Cointreau. Stir to dissolve, then allow to cool. Fill the moulds with the juice mixture, carefully pulling the oranges away from the sides to allow the jelly to coat the sides of the moulds. Refrigerate overnight. Zest and juice the remaining 2 oranges. Place in a saucepan with the remaining 100g caster sugar and 4 cloves. Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves, then simmer for 5 minutes until syrupy. Stir in the remaining Cointreau and cool. For the Cointreau cream, whisk all ingredients until soft peaks form. Turn jellies out onto plates and serve with the syrup and Cointreau cream.

The Ebola Outbreak – Are We Really Under Threat? By Martin Shortland
The 2014 Ebola epidemic in West Africa is the largest in history and has killed more than 3,400 people. Despite assurances from public health officials that it is not an airborne disease, fears are mounting as experts on the ground warn the outbreak is ‘out of control’, as imported cases hit Europe and the US. That may be an over statement. As the current figures show, a tiny number of reported cases have reached Europe and America, all of which have turned out to be false alarms. I’ve spent a week looking at the facts behind a disease which seems to have much of the Western World in a grip of fear. Ebola, previously known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a rare and often deadly disease if not treated quickly. It has various strains - the Ebola Zaire is known as the most dangerous. The virus was first discovered in 1976 from outbreaks in southern Sudan and in northern Zaire, now known as The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was named Ebola after a small river in the north-western part of the Republic. Monkeys were confirmed as the main carriers of the disease. The cause of the virus has never been identified and it is still not known how the first case crossed from monkeys to humans. But researchers believe that the virus is animal-borne and that
fruit bats are the most likely reservoir or host of the disease. Depending on the strain, the mortality rate can reach 90%. The flu-like symptoms on average take eight to 10 days to appear after exposure to Ebola. They usually include high fever greater than 38.6c, severe headaches, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and unexplained bleeding that can appear from the eyes, nose, gums and even under the skin. Recovery depends on good healthcare systems and the patient’s immune response. Those who recover from Ebola infection develop antibodies that last for at least 10 years. The main concern amongst the population is how it is transmitted. Many people believe it can be caught much like the common cold, but that is not the case. Public health officials have said it can only be transferred via blood or other bodily fluids but we now learn that previous research published in the journal, Scientific Reports, proved it could be transmitted by air between animals. Scientists in Canada proved pigs infected with Ebola Zaire could pass it on to monkeys without any direct contact with one another. It must be emphasised, the research only confirmed the transfer between species; as of yet, there is no solid

proof it can be transferred by air between humans. As with any health scare, the facts can often become muddled. And that is not helped by the rolling news channels which are having a field day, with continued coverage of reported outbreaks of the virus, 24/7. In relative terms, the ‘epidemic’ as it’s being called, has caused few deaths: consider the hundreds of thousands who have perished in the last twenty years, through drought and starvation which has ravaged Kenya and the Sudan. To date, in West Africa, 3,500 people out of 7,500 cases have died from Ebola. Meanwhile more than 2,000 deaths occurred in Liberia, 740 in Guinea, 620 in Sierra Leone and eight in Nigeria. These are known deaths and it must be assumed some deaths in outlying areas will have gone unreported. There have been no deaths in Europe, although suspected cases are being reported on an almost daily basis. Only recently a full scale alert occurred in Roquetas de Mar, near Almeria, when an African man was admitted to the local hospital showing signs of the disease. He was transferred to the special unit for the treatment of tropical diseases at Torrecardenas Hospital in Almeria, where it was subsequently discovered he was suffering from malaria. All the workers at the hospital, from personnel management, doctors, nurses and cleaners, have been highly trained in the protocol against Ebola. The head of public health in the province, Pilar Barroso, has already confirmed that the training has been in place for some time for all staff who may come into contact with a possible case of Ebola - such as Emergency, ICU, and Internal Medicine. Mrs Barossa says the so called ‘Active Protocol’ in the Andalucian public health system is, “In line with that established by the World Health Organization.” She added that the levels of health care security for such a disease were probably higher than many hospitals in the world. Tests on samples from all suspected cases will be conducted by the Laboratory of Microbiology at the Carlos III Institute of National Health in Madrid. Three suspected case samples referred to the centre last week were subsequently declared as being negative on Sunday. Announcing the results at a press conference, a spokesman for the hospital reiterated the fact that the virus is not transmitted by air, adding “It is acquired by direct contact with blood, secretions, fluids, tissues and organs from living patients or those that have died from the disease.” People living along this stretch of coastline between Algeciras and Almeria are understandably concerned about the possibility of illegal immigrants transmitting the disease. They are aware that the coastline is one of the most used areas for immigrants seeking illegal entry into the country. Every year, Guardia Civil and Coast Guard Agencies arrest thousands of Africans at sea, all trying to get into Spain. The figures vary widely as to how many manage to get through the security net, but one figure is as high as 10,000 every year. Last, year, more than 5,000 men, women and children were apprehended at sea in a variety of ancient vessels: many more succumb
to the sea and are never found. That theory was quickly diffused by Pilar Barrosa, as she explained to me. She said the routes taken by the people smugglers across Western and Central Africa were complicated and it takes weeks just to get the immigrants to a port in Morocco. From there they have to find transportation; the whole process can often take months. “So the whole notion,” she said, “of someone carrying the disease into Spain via this method of travel is impossible – the infected person would die long before they reached these shores. Once the incubation period – of ten days - has been passed, death can follow very swiftly if not treated properly and promptly.” The key to the whole Ebola scare is health care. In most of the West and Central African countries currently affected by the outbreak, the level of health care is at best poor and at worst, often nonexistent. I must repeat, this is not by any means a fatal disease – if it’s treated in time. The majority of deaths which have occurred in Africa have been in remote villages where the nearest doctor is more than likely hundreds of miles away: the nearest hospital further than that. With the incubation period, it’s normally too late to get the patient into care before their health rapidly declines and death is inevitable. Important research has been carried out since 2003 here in Spain, at the Universities of Almeria and Granada and in association with the tropical disease unit at Torrecardenas Hospital. As I said earlier, the cause of the virus is not known. The teams have not been working directly with the virus, but with proteins from it. Professor Ana Camerra, who leads the project, said they have been studying the interaction between the cellular proteins and the Ebola virus capsid protein VP40, which play an essential role in its spread through the body. They set out to identify highaffinity inhibitors - cells which resemble the Ebola protein. The team recently announced it has managed to develop an inhibitor of high affinity whose effectiveness against the virus is being tested now at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. If it’s confirmed that this molecule blocks infection of healthy cells, it would be an important step in the treatment not only of Ebola, but also of HIV, herpes and rabies. In addition, this type of drug, directed toward human proteins, would have fewer tendencies to develop resistance, which is one of the main problems of the current antiviral forms of treatments. Professor Camerra said that despite the positive results, it is important to be cautious as they still have a long way to go to find a cure. So in conclusion and in answer to many people’s fears about their chances of catching the virus, they are virtually nil. Anyone living in mainland Europe should probably be more worried about catching the flu. But if you’re desperately concerned, despite lots of scaremongering about Ebola having a 10 day incubation period and people being carriers even though they feel totally healthy, actually you needn’t worry. A person is very rarely contagious before they themselves are suffering the symptoms of the virus.

viewpoint
As Duncan Burr pointed out in his ‘Pause For Thought’ column last week, the visiting season is over for him and I suspect for most of us who live the good life here in Spain. My last visitor left a few weeks ago and as far as I know, I’m not due any more now until next year. The spare room can go back to being a store room again. The visitor in question took a very circuitous route to get here. He’d firstly travelled to Tenerife from the UK the previous week, to visit friends there, but then it got complicated. One can’t fly from Tenerife to Almeria, so he told me, so he thaought Malaga was his next best option. Uh, no. He couldn’t find a direct flight to Malaga, so instead flew to Barcelona and in doing so, probably flew over Almeria on the way. From there and after a delay, he then flew down to Malaga, probably over flying Almeria yet again! The final leg of his journey entailed the 100 kilometre drive back up to Almeria in a hire car. The whole convoluted episode took the best part of 17 hours and – as we worked out later – in that time, he covered around 2,760 kilometres. As you can imagine, when he finally arrived here at one thirty in the morning, he was feeling pretty tired. It was only the next day after he’d had a good nights sleep, that I asked how long he was staying; I’d forgotten and as it turned out, so had he, so he checked his online booking, which confirmed he was here for four days. Later that night, when I was loosely trying to decipher what he’d like to do with his time, he gave me a look and said, “Ah, It’s not actually four days, it’s only three.” That’s when he had to make the rather embarrassing admission about his return travel plans. Rather than take the fairly obvious decision to fly back to the UK from Almeria - the airport is 30 minutes away from my house - he’d booked from Malaga, “Not thinking,” he said. Ah, indeed! He was not a happy bunny and to add insult to his injured pride, the flight from Malaga departed at 6.30 in the morning, so he would have to travel down the previous night to avoid any possibility of missing the plane. I could feel his pain, it had all gone badly wrong: a lost night here with his old mate and of course the added cost to his already hefty travel bill, of an overnight stay in an hotel. He spent the remaining two days of his visit in a slightly restrained mood, no doubt kicking himself mentally at his loss of concentration when clicking the appropriate box in the online booking form. By Paul Martin
Alqueria The harvest
The fields to the west of Alqueria are ablaze with colour. The red berries of the ripe Remitroot plants blanket the landscape. So intense is the colour it hurts the eyes and confuses the mind. This promised to be a bumper crop. The berries, stalks, flowers and leaves are all used to make a multitude of products. Everything from whisky to the lagging for water pipes. The fierceness of the berry’s colour and rigidity of the stems assured a high alcohol content for this season’s wines and a robust aphrodisiacal extract, the two most highly prized attributes of the plant. Antonio Poyato, who owned the Remitroot plantation looked with pride and anticipation at the red swath of colour. It assured not only his prosperity for the coming year but also that of the whole village of Alqueria. The method of harvesting is singular and in true Alquerian spirit. For this reason alone it is worthy of recording in some detail. The harvest must take place five days after the first berry turns red. This is when the extracted juice produces its most potent aphrodisiac. If the berries are left on the plant the local birds devour them with relish. The air then becomes filled with frenzied feathered paramours. A cross between Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ and ‘Debbie Does Dallas’. They are a danger to themselves, the people of Alqueria in general and low flying aircraft. Gathering the Remitroot berries is a seasonal pastime performed by the good people of Alqueria. On the promise of large amounts of cash of course. Picking takes a full day with practically every able-bodied member of the population in attendance. The start of the picking day is a picture of industry, concentration and productivity. However, as the juice of the Remitroot berry becomes absorbed through the pores of the pickers it begins a rapid fermentation. Causing that prized of all processes, namely intoxication by absorption. But not ordinary intoxication this is tempered with the plant’s property as an aphrodisiac. The result is that the number of people actively involved in berry picking steadily reduces. Instead, they become engaged in another more strenuous pastime. To the analytical mind this is possibly a variation on the ‘Law of Diminishing Returns’. As the berry harvest nears completion only a handful of the more resilient citizens remain in the field. The vast majority become distracted, confused and deorientated. All memory of the promised remittance is soon forgotten in a swirl of pink mist and passion. Poyato and Alqueria have the only crop that is harvested without cost, sold at a premium and grows nowhere else. Alqueria is certainly a favoured place. John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Maintaining the Status Quo
By Lucero Rodriguez Biggs
I haven’t had a moment’s peace since that cat and its kitten arrived. First of all we had to establish who’s who. Now I’ve been brought up in a cat owning household, so I know a thing or two about them. The common belief by humans is that dogs chase cats, and cats run away from dogs. Of course that is all publicity hype on our part – it makes us dogs look brave and therefore admirable, and cats appear vulnerable and helpless, and therefore lovable. The truth is that neither of us is stupid; cats have superior armoury, and if they catch you one on the nose it really, really hurts. Plus they can run up trees, which I feel is cheating. So as soon as she arrived we opened negotiations. I suggested the normal arrangement – I chase, she runs, but she wouldn’t hear of it. ‘How very dog’ she said in a condescending tone, ‘I’ve got better things to do than waste my time running away from you.’ And then she just walked off! How ill-mannered is that? Well, two can play at that game! If she can ignore me, then I can ignore her – with knobs on! Then I remembered the kitten. I feel that for its own sake the kitten should be brought up properly: that is, it should be made aware of the dog/cat continuum. I approached the kitten to suggest that there are natural laws which balance the universe, and if those laws are not upheld, then the universe might become unbalanced and tip over, and we’d probably all slide off the edge. I’d hardly started to explain the situation when she appeared from nowhere, all humped up and puffed out with a bottlebrush tail, and using the sort of language that young impressionable ears really shouldn’t hear. So I left – you just can’t help some people! However, I didn’t get where I am today without a certain degree of manipulative skill. I make sure that whenever the humans are around they notice me ignoring the cat. ‘What a good girl Lucy is,’ they say, and then they pat me. Or if they play with the cat, I make sure I’m there, ignoring it like billy-o. So they pat me some more, so as I ‘Don’t feel left out.’ Apparently they are ‘Maintaining the Status Quo.’ Though I have no idea what the relationship between myself and the cat has to do with five men who make a noise called music and live inside the television has to do with anything.

As if this game of golf was not difficult enough our Chairman decided we should only play with three clubs and a putter, to make matters worse we played at Aguilon one of the most demanding but well kept courses in the area. Luckily the weather was perfect for golf with a pleasant autumn sun and a gentle breeze keeping us warm but not too hot. Dave Denyer clearly thought that this 3 club thing was far too easy so left his 9 iron on the second and only realized it at the 5th where panic and a desperate drive back to the following players was rewarded with the safe return of said club. Syd Walker scored a nett 27 to take 3rd with Dave Sharp MBE in 2nd and Nigel Greenwood in 1st place with a very creditable 32 points. Dave also won a Nearest the Pin on the 12th which he converted to a Two making his day more than worthwhile. Dave Rust captured a very good Nearest the Pin on the tricky 17th.
Good fun day of golf followed by nibbles and refreshments back at La Vida. Result 1st Nigel Greenwood Nett 32 points (17) 2nd Dave Sharp MBE Nett 28 points (04) 3rd Syd Walker Nett 27 points (27) Nearest the Pin. Hole No 8 Terry Caddick Hole No 12 Dave Sharp Hole No17 Dave Rust. Thanks to all the members who support the 19th Hole Golf Society. The 19th hole G/S is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we will play fortnightly, is Aguilon. BENEFITS OF ECU REMAPPING & WHY THE MANUFACTURERS DON’T DO IT! ECU remapping will not only improve the engines power and torque figures, it will also sharpen the throttle response and widen the power-band. This will make the power delivery a lot more linear, which in turn will make the vehicle feel a lot livelier to drive and the engine more flexible. Manufacturers generally sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations; different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity; different fuel quantities; different operating altitudes, etc. A manufacturer has to take all of these factors into consideration and make substantial compromises in the vehicles operation. As a driving enthusiast, you do not need or want such restrictions placed upon your vehicles ECU and its performance therefore you can benefit from the hidden power and torque locked away within your engine management system.

you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input to maintain motorway speeds, you can drive in a higher gear at a slower speed as well as helping significantly when fully laden, towing or on gradients and even in start stop traffic. Remapping or fine tuning the ECU will improve the overall driveability, performance, and most importantly, the economy of most turbo diesel vehicles. We offer a 30 day money back guarantee if for any reason you are not delighted with the results. Also a lifetime software guarantee. Call Paul on: 950104488

Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Len Dean Drawn Rinks which culminated in the final being played on Saturday 4th October. There were some very good rounds leading up to the final which was contested between the following two teams. John Sephton, David Jenkins, Lyn Band and Ian Jackson against David Schofield, Sue Sephton, Janet Jackson and Jean Smallwood.
The final started excellently for John’s team as after 8 ends they were 11-1 ahead. David’s team never gave up and after 17 ends had clawed it back to only 15-11 behind. The final end was a nail biter but after being behind for the whole match Sue Sephton produced the shot of the match to set up a dramatic finish enabling David’s team to claim an unexpected 5 to win the the final 1615. What drama. As you may have noticed there were 2 married couples in opposite teams but at least 2 of the 4 were happy at the end. Fantastic final and well done to all who entered the competition. New Olive Tree Plantation Comes To The Province
By Martin Shortland
part of the land into a golf complex – and rather like some of my golf shots, the project never got off the ground. Even more recently, a development company acquired the land with a view to constructing a holiday village, with apartments, villas, shops and hotels. Their timing and possibly their financial advice couldn’t have been worse because before the plans were even drawn up, the property bubble burst and the company, along with hundreds more throughout Spain went bankrupt.
Hundreds of hectares of formerly abandoned land have been planted with thousands of young olive trees. The land, in the Valle del Este near Garrucha was bought last year by the Granada based company, Giminez Agricultural Holdings, who own fruit, vegetable and olive farms right across Andalucia. The land has a chequered history: At the beginning of the last century, it was covered in wheat and
corn fields, supplying the local market in Almeria with flour and cornmeal. As the need for certain products changed and subsequent owners let the land go to waste, it remained unused for the best part of fifty years. In more recent times, some twenty years ago, the famous Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros led a group of investors who planned to turn a large
The latest agricultural project will provide a boost to the region, not only in providing well needed jobs, but also in changing the landscape from a faceless wasteland into a well ordered vista of olive groves. The spacing of the trees has been designed around the size of the tractors which not only plough and harrow between the trees, but also can be converted with special attachments to speed up the harvesting of the olives. For centuries olives have been picked
by hand and still are in many of the older, more compact and sometimes inaccessible groves. But groves which have been planted in the last thirty years are all designed for modern machine cropping. Anyone who has driven from Cordoba to Jaen and on to Madrid will know what I’m talking about; thousands of hectares of wider spaced trees on the flat plains makes harvesting much more cost effective than it ever could be in the past. The company already have around 600 hectares of olive groves in the region around Tabernas, Sorbas and Seron, employing more than 100 staff. They have also acquired a water treatment plant near Vera, vital for the irrigation of the new saplings which has a capability of 1.2 million cubic metres; the plant also provides water for the nearby Valle del Este golf course. A spokesman for the company said the first olive oil from the new trees could be in production in a little over five years time.
Animal Society Is Looking For Dog Walkers By Martin Shortland
A full calendar of events is planned this autumn to raise awareness of animals and in particular the treatment of dogs. Organised by the Society for the Protection of Animals, the aim is to continue the good work they’ve achieved throughout the year. The Society has run a yearlong campaign to encourage people to become more involved with dogs and have conducted a number of workshops to explain the complexities of owning
and caring for dogs.
in their care.
Last Saturday in Roquetas they held an event at a pet shop in the town where people were invited to spend time with dogs from their rescue centre. Children and parents could pet the dogs in a special enclosure and if they wanted to, with the help of an assistant, take them for a walk in the nearby park. The Society has also been running an adoption campaign to help people get to know the dogs
The scheme is designed to give people a chance to meet with a particular dog on a weekly basis, get to know it and hopefully in time, take it into their homes permanently. Every Saturday morning they hold dag walking sessions and have found a lot of older people who may not be able to care for a dog full time, enjoy the companionship they get from their weekly walks. One of the major events in the
calendar comes up on the 26th of this month, it’s a ‘solidarity march’ being held at La Molata in the Gabo de Gata National Park. The two hour walk starts at 10.00 am and is another part of the awareness campaign for the better treatment of all animals. Visitors are being encouraged to take their own dogs along. A reception centre will provide refreshments and information about the work of the Society.
