News colours were chosen by the class members. Continuing the colour related theme, an afternoon tea was served and this comprised of brightly coloured foods such as red tomatoes, green lettuce and white onions! As is usual at nearly all the clubs parties, a raffle was held in the name of F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone), which has been the Line Dance Classes designated charity ever since it’s inception. Over the years the class has managed to donate over € 1,240 to F.A.C.E. And the afternoon’s raffle raised € 82, which will be added to further money raised at earlier events in the year, and presented to F.A.C.E. Shortly. The Monday Afternoon Line Dance Class was first envisaged by Eleanor and Gilly to be a destination where people who may not like to go out of an evening, for whatever reason, could go to, and make and meet friends using Line Dancing as the main hook. It subsequently became the first afternoon Line Dance Class in the area. For further information please ring Eleanor Tolman on telephone number 950 439 003.

Dancing Colours

Eleanor and Gilly’s Monday Afternoon Line Dance Class recently celebrated it’s 6th Birthday at Bar Jack’s in Avenida Lepanto, Albox. It is presently the oldest and longest running Line Dance Class in the Albox and Arboleas area. The theme for this years Birthday Party was colours. Unbeknown to Class Members the Dances throughout the afternoon had been chosen by the Class Members themselves in a rather unique way. Class organisers Eleanor Tolman and Gilly Elliott-Binns had asked the Class Members, what colours they would be wearing on the day of the party. Dances were then chosen dependant on the colours that Class Members proposed to wear. For example if a member of class had chosen to wear red, an appropriate dance such as “Red Hot Salsa” was danced during the afternoon. One dance was chosen for each class member dependant on the colour they had chosen to wear. Fourteen different

PSOE demands mayoress resignation after awarding herself a parking space in Mojacar Village underground car park Manuel Zamora, PSOE spokesman revealed that at least 5 parking spaces are in the hands of PP representatives and their families. Mr. Zamora has asked Rosa Maria Cano to resign after discovering that she is one of the people who has been given space in the municipal carpark, built next to the church, as well as spaces for her partner and his brother, who lives in another village but hes registered at the mayoress home, together with a PP councillor and another PP councillor”s brother and she must explain herself to the people of the village. We are reminded by the PSOE general secretary about the cost of the carpark which was 2 million euros (from our taxes) and they have been spent to benefit the popular party, especially the mayoress, her family and friends. So, these private parking spaces are specifically for the mayoress, her partner together with his brother who doesnt live in mojacar, the PP councillor Maria Luisa Perez who doesnt live in the village (which is one of the major requirements) and the brother of councillor Diego Garcia Montoya (responsible for public gardens and parks), who admits not living in that area. “Its incredible that the PP party has acted shamelessly on this issue in which its revealed the plan to award the parking spaces for life and paying less than the real cost as the difference has been paid by all “mojaqueros” to presumably obtain personal gain with them”. Mr.Zamora stated. We need to point out that an assumed investment of more than 45.000eu on

this carpark, is going to be sold at an average of 15.000eu. BACKGROUND Mr, Zamora recalls that PSOE Party was suspecting something like this would happen as they had previously informed the public and these suspicions are well founded. Its now understandable that the PP rejected our original proposals regarding the parking spaces which were to be rented by the Town Hall at reasonable prices instead of selling them and we emphasized on renting to residents of Mojacar evaluating their need to park especially the elderly and the disabled.. but far from this the local government designed their own criteria and the facts prove that only 27 applications, from 37, had been presented to opt for parking space. We were aware of the financial difficulties we are going through as well as the “mojaqueros”who wanted to apply for the parking spaces in order to pay the necessary amount and that”s the reason why PSOE proposed what was the most logical and fair plan which was a parking financed by the citizens taxes to benefit the largest number of people possible renting the municipal carpark with a guarantee of rotating, Mr. Zamora explained. And that is what we are going to continue claiming. After seeing recent events, the Mayoress must resign..the sale procedure must be cancelled and the renting innitiative put forward by the PSOE and other opposition groups must be put into action. Dear Avalon, Just a quick note to thank you once again for everything you did for me and mum when my dad passed away. Vile Cowards Torture puppies There are no words that can be published to describe the vile cowards that tortured three poor defenceless puppies. Three puppies, two males and one female were brought to the shelter, ‘SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR’, by the local police. The puppies had been abandoned in a plastic container from which there was no possible chance of escape. Before they had been left to die they were subjected to unspeakable horrors. Their tails had been hacked off as had the ear of one of the male puppies. They were all completely dehydrated and quite understandably, terrified for their lives. The cruelty of some so-called human beings is beyond belief. The attacking of innocent defenceless animals is an act of miserable

cowardice beyond comprehension. Shame on these disgusting beasts! Fortunately the puppies are now in good hands. They are being taken care of by the shelter’s vet. Once they have recovered from their ordeal, the puppies will be offered for adoption. If you wish to contact the shelter you can do so by contacting Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com

The Governmental delegate for Andalucia, Carmen Crespo, was in Almeria last week to launch the ‘Food Aid Plan’ for the province. The distribution of 12.5 million kilos of food, valued at 9.6 million euros, will reach an estimated 580,000 Andalusians. The proportion of people at risk of social exclusion and poverty has reached 24.5% in the Province, one of the highest in Spain. During a visit to the food bank in Almeria on Thursday, Ms Crespo said that working with the Red Cross, the food would be distributed to 2,000 associations throughout Andalucia, who deal in helping the disadvantaged. The Food Plan is jointly funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the European Union. The Plan consists of two phases: the first phase started in July and a total of 3.8 million kilograms of food were distributed in Andalusia amounting to 2.8 million euros. In the second phase, which started last month, 8.6 million kilograms of food are being distributed

with a value of 6.8 million euros. The delegate reiterated what she described as ‘the commitment of the Government of Spain,’ to support the most disadvantaged people through the continuity of programs such as the Food Plan. However, she was critical of the delay in the adoption of the Plan by the EU, and likewise the funds for food. She said the delay would have directly impacted on the beneficiaries of the aid scheme in Spain and Andalusia. The Ministry of Agriculture allocated a starting budget of 40 million this year in order to guarantee the continuity of the food programme during the year 2014. In the province of Almeria, Food Plan and The Red Cross have distributed 2.6 million kilograms of food so far, reaching an estimated 69,500 people in need. At a local level, more than 13,000 people have benefited in the municipality of Roquetas. It’s expected the financial allocation from the EU could increase next year by as much as 20 million euros.

The Government Turns Down Alboran Gas Search By Martin Shortland

There will be no exploration for natural gas in the Alboran Sea. The long awaited news finally came from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment last Friday. The major reason given was the environmental impact in a region of coastal waters that have only recently been declared a protected site of great ecological interest. Two other applications were also turned down on similar grounds, in Catalonia and the Basque Country. Two similar projects – in Tarragona and Biscay – were given the go ahead, but strict controls have been placed on the companies undertaking the work. They have agreed to follow the guidelines set out by the Ministry, which states they must apply, ‘the highest level of environmental care’ to all the work involved. Seismic sound waves are used to

detect the location of hydrocarbons in the marine subsoil and it is these sound waves which are the cause of concern. The Council of Andalucia has been against the proposed gas exploration campaign from the outset and sees this as a comprehensive victory in its battle to keep the Alboran Sea in as natural a state as possible. The beleaguered local fishing industry will also be mightily relieved at the ruling, which comes at a time when the fishermen are fighting to regain their tuna fishing licenses. A spokesman for the Council said they were pleased with the outcome as it would have been a disaster for both the tourist and fishing industries. The company behind the applications in all of the regions, Repsol, says it will consider appealing against the ruling.

Dementia – signs and symptoms

Dementia often develops slowly and is not always obvious in the early stages. Symptoms similar to dementia can be seen in other illnesses. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell apart dementia from the usual mild forgetfulness seen in normal ageing. You should see your GP if you or your family and friends are worried about any changes in: • Memory • General mental functioning • Ability to carry out daily tasks • Personality Your GP will be able to either reassure you or, if necessary, refer you to a specialist. Diagnosing dementia early is important to allow you to get the right help and treatments and to plan for the future. Everyone with dementia will experience symptoms in their own way. Other types of dementia include Alzheimers, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy’s bodies and frontotemporal dementia. Other signs and symptoms of types of dementia include: • Regularly forgetting recent events, names and faces.

of 80. Dementia is not a normal part of getting older or an acceleration of ageing. Dementia is caused by different diseases – most commonly by Alzheimer’s. We can’t change our age and there is currently no way we can completely prevent dementia, but research suggests there may be some simple things we can all do that might help lower our risk. A risk factor is anything that can increase your chance of developing dementia. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (like heart disease and stroke) are also risk factors for all types of dementia. So it’s a good idea to keep healthy by: • exercising regularly • not smoking • achieving and maintaining a healthy weight • controlling high blood pressure • reducing your cholesterol level • controlling your blood glucose if you have diabetes •e ating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and low amounts of saturated fat. Some studies suggest that enjoying an active life, with lots of interests and hobbies might be beneficial. Other researchers have found that spending more time in education is associated with a lower risk. It’s not yet known whether eating oily fish or taking B vitamins can reduce the risk of dementia as studies so far have had mixed results. It is not advised to take NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen) or HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to protect against dementia, as research is continuing in this area. You should talk to your doctor before taking any supplements or drugs that claim to prevent dementia, as most are unproven and they can have serious side effects. You might read or hear about other risk factors for dementia. Despite occasional publicity, research has shown that meat, aluminium or living close to power lines are not risk factors for dementia. There is also no evidence that turmeric, gingko, ginseng, statins or coffee can protect against dementia. Source: Almeria Angels

These can often involve seeing people or animals that aren’t really there. •P arkinson’s-type symptoms, like slow movement or difficulty walking, stiffness in the limbs and sometimes tremor. • Movements during sleep and vivid dreams. •S ymptoms similar to Alzheimer’s, including memory loss and disorientation. • Fainting and falls. •P ersonality changes, such as loss of inhibition, rudeness, apathy, impatience or inappropriate behaviour, of which the person is often unaware. •L oss of emotional warmth and empathy for others. The person may seem selfish and unfeeling. •D ecline in language abilities – including difficulty getting words out or problems with understanding less common words and people’s names. •O vereating or changes in dietary preference, particularly cravings for sweet food. •C hanges in sexual behaviour. •D ay-to-day memory remains intact in the early stages, but the decline in the ability to communicate may give the impression of memory problems. Alzheimer’s, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are all neurodegenerative diseases. This means that the symptoms get worse over time. This is usually the case with vascular dementia too. The speed of change varies between people and also between different diseases, but in most dementias symptoms progress slowly over several years. Prevention Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia are complex. It’s becoming clear that they don’t have a single cause. It is likely that a mixture of our age, genes, environment and lifestyle contribute to whether we develop dementia. The risk of developing most dementias increases with age. That means as we get older, we are more likely to develop dementia. About one in 20 people over the age of 60 have dementia, but this rises to about one in five people over the age

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2014

braben’s blog...

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I promised that I would install the new Flagship Operating System from Microsoft and give it a fair character assassination, sorry I meant to say assessment! Well, first things, first! I am using a technical evaluation product. This means that it is far from finished and might fall over at any time. At the end of this article I will tell you just how many times that it did stop. Installing the disk was exactly the same as installing Windows 8 /8.1! It tries to encourage you to use Microsoft’s browser and search engine (Bing) and like 8/8.1 doesn’t want you to login without a Hotmail or Outlook account. As I have an Outlook dump account, I used that. Note to self – make the password easier to remember!!! Another thing that I did like was the ability of the installation to put this on a separate drive and keep my beloved Windows XP. Both separate but completely installed. To write this article I downloaded and installed ‘LibreOffice’, as it is the free (as in speech) office suite that for me, rivals anything by Microsoft. The fact that I can tell you this means that it has succeeded! Let me repeat, this is an unfinished version of the product that you will be getting with your new computers in 8 – 10 months time and it is working, and working well! When I look at the screen what do I see? Well the Start Menu bar is back (yippee) with the now, familiar, Windows 8x logo on it. Click on it and you will see on the left side the familiar Windows 7 menu display that has made it a firm favourite now surpassing XP (even in my books). Still on the start menu but to the right side is the concession to windows 8 and their ridiculous ‘boxes’. Strangely, I like this configuration – it works for me! Changing the way the blocks appear and removing / replacing them, is surprising easy and works. Just like Windows 8.1’s Tiles, the ones on the task bar can be moved about and I’ve had quite a bit of fun the past half hour moving and resizing them, removing and replacing them and the most important thing is that, like Windows

8x, they can be ‘Live’. So, just to prove a point to myself, I set up the Live tile for the weather in Partaloa and now when I click on the ‘Start’ button the weather in Partaloa is displayed and says it is very sunny and warm (more yippee). One thing that you must remember is that these ‘Tiles’ are just ‘Apps’ – minimalistic front-ends to the working programs. Somewhere these programs must be running ALL THE TIME and that eats into your Processor’s Power, Working Memory and Ultimately – Your Time, constantly! You really didn’t think that Microsoft were going to get off that easily did you? On my cheap(ish) android phone I can turn off ‘Skype’, my ‘Email’ app, What’sapp and Viber and just have the phone as a phone (and maybe a book!). I would like to see the same options available to every one of you, of being able to ‘Turn Off’ any and all ‘Apps’ that you really want to keep, but only use when you what / need them! I hope, that as part of their extended development team, I will be able to point them in a direction that will make Windows OS something that everyone will actually want rather than loathe, which is the current view of their OS. And make it as flexible and robust as my beloved Linux. As they put it in their email “Together we will make this Windows the best Windows ever!” which will be an accomplishment after Windows Vista, 8 and 8.1. which, to be not too brutal, were lame ducks at best! By the way – During the writing of this article, which took a couple of hours, Windows 10 didn’t twitch, flinch or fail in any way. Now that is a product that might be worth buying!!!! Next week I will be starting a beginners course of articles from “Where is the damned power button” onwards, trying to dispel some of the myths and antiquated fears around computer’s and their uses. So until then, have a lovely week and if you need to see me you know where I am (see below). I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

There’s a Humphrey about I remember getting my first bike aged 4; a red and blue machine with stabilisers. I grew out of it quickly but money was tight so I had to walk until my 8th birthday. My next one was bought second hand for £7. It was really heavy, had no gears and curious brakes that operated with metal bars instead of cables; I painted it bright blue. I remember dad teaching me to ride it in our back garden. Having a bike meant freedom; my mates and I had a large scale map of Guildford on which we proceeded to draw the boundaries of our imaginary kingdom each time we returned from a faraway adventure. We could be gone from early morning till dusk, parking our bikes in distant woodlands and playing ‘war’ or Hide N’ Seek. I don’t remember us ever taking sandwiches or drinks as we ran on fresh air. Sadly blue bike died when I attempted one wheelie too many. Not only did I bend the front forks but I slammed head first into a concrete wall and was

Final Frontier

100 million dollars! Would you believe it? I’ll come back to that stupendous wodge of cash later…if I remember. We watched Apollo 13 at home the other day, you know, the one where they had a bit of a problem on board their spaceship to the Moon. In case you haven’t seen it, or weren’t around when it actually happened, I won’t spoil the end, but what’s with the film’s credits -they go on forever! I’m sure that there were more people involved in making Apollo 13 than were part of ground control on the original mission! What I don’t understand is, why filmmakers feel the need to list EVERYONE involved in making the film when, if the truth were told, we haven’t got a clue what the majority of the jobs mean. Most film crews have a Best Boy. What’s one of those? Then there’s the Grip, Key Grip and Dolly Grip. What the dickens could they possibly do that makes it so vital to tell us all who they are? But what these credits do reveal is, just why the toffee popcorn at the cinema is so expensive, we’re paying the, not insubstantial I’m sure, salaries of the various boys, grips, dollys and other mysterious technicians from the film industry. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Remember the 100 million dollars? That’s apparently how much it took to make the science fiction film “Gravity” starring George Clooney, Sandra Bullock and lots of broken space rockets. But, did you know, it cost India only seventy four million dollars to send their Mangalayaan spacecraft to Mars! Obviously, you can get to Mars without a Dolly Grip and it’s certainly cheaper without George Clooney onboard! Then there’s Sarah Brightman, who plans to pay a fair whack of money to blast off to the International Space Station next year and become the first professional singer to sing from space. Wasn’t it she who, along with the rest of Hot Gossip, had a hit with “I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper”? Well, as captain Kirk always said, space is the final front ear! He did say that didn’t he? And with that I’ll say goodbye, if there’s anyone still reading at this point. Thank you to anyone who has actually taken the time to read any of these bits of nonsense over the last few years. Have fun! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

rushed to casualty. The scar is still visible if/when I furrow my brow. My best mate Paul Cox and I used to earn a decent living helping the local Unigate milkman with his deliveries. Saturdays and holidays we would jump in the cab or perch on the back of the float at the beginning of his round and zoom off. The milkman smoked fags whilst he pootled along giving instructions to his two nimble assistants about what to leave at each doorstep. This was in the days of Corona (every bubble’s passed its fizzical) and we would each be rewarded by a litre bottle of whatever we fancied. Cream Soda was my preferred tipple in those days yet now my stomach churns at the thought of all the sugar and goodness knows what else that I glugged down. The prestige of the milkman reached a nadir in the 70s; Unigate discovered that the Humphreys were stealing people’s milk and came up with the

slogan ‘watch out watch out there’s a Humphrey about!’ Telly adverts starring Muhammed Ali, Sid James, Barbara Windsor and Rod Hull warned us kids about the milk snatchers that wanted our milk. We in turn went mad for the free red and white bendy straws, badges, stickers and other Humphrey paraphernalia we could lay our hands on. Being Unigate helpers of course put us first in line for the freebies. In 1970 Ernie was the fastest milkman in the west, Benny Hill wrote the song in 1955 as a tribute to his time as a milkman on a horse drawn cart in Eastleigh Hampshire. The lyric ‘he galloped into Market Street’ probably happened as the street exists. He performed the song on the Benny Hill Show; it was later released as a single becoming the 1971 Christmas number1 and stayed there

for 4 weeks. Two Ton Ted the bread delivery man was Ernie’s love rival for the widow Sue and they had a ‘wild west’ style shoot out with Ernie being killed by a combination of a well-aimed rock cake and stale pork pie. Ernie the milkman went to heaven where ferocious dogs are banned, Two Ton Ted married Sue but Ernie came back to haunt them on their honeymoon with the ghostly rattling of his milk bottles. Although I enjoyed delivering the white stuff, I stopped drinking milk at a young age. The dreaded ¼ pint bottle of free school milk did it for me as it was always warm and tasted horrid. In 1971 Margaret Thatcher God rest ‘er gained the nickname ‘milk snatcher’ for stopping free school milk for 7 to 11 year olds; for her kindness I will be forever in her debt!

Anchor Drops on Madrid Housing Prices

Iberian Funeral Plans: registered in Spain | Portugal |UK

According to a recent report from real estate intermediation company, Tecnocasa, based on purchases that they have brokered, property price reductions have come to an end, at least where second hand homes in the city of Madrid are concerned. They reported that the average price of second hand property in the city remained stable during the first half of 2014, and grew by just 0.56% compared with the same period of 2013 . This last almost negligible variation has brought the value per square metre of existing homes in the capital to 1,605 euros, which is well below the maximum price reached in the first part of 2007, when these properties reached a value of more than 4,000 euros per square metre. Their cumulative adjustment therefore, stands at around 59.92%. Tecnocasa reported that investors accounted for 33.27% of all the home purchases that were made in the capital between January and June and that, of this percentage, 87.28% paid for the transaction in cash. According to the intermediation company, these are mainly buyers acquiring property to rent out for a return on their investment. These property investors usually acquire cheaper properties than those purchased by regular home buyers looking for a primary residence. While the investor pays an average of 88,286 euros per property, the regular home buyer pays around 107,506 euros. This ratio is similar

with regard to the average size of the home, with the investor purchasing property with an average area of 56 square metres while the average size of property for the regular home buyer is around 65 square metres. Among the main considerations when purchasing an apartment is whether or not it has a lift. In the city of Madrid, the homes which have a lift are more expensive than those that do not have one, and in the first half of 2014 the prices for these properties stood at 1,856 euros per square metre and 1,314 euros per square metre, respectively. “If we analyse the difference between the two types in recent years, we can see that in the

Iberian where we help you plan for the inevitable The best laid plans should include an Iberian Funeral Plan, wherever you live in Spain or Portugal

periods where there was a greater demand for housing, the price difference was less, and that in the periods with less demand, then the properties without a lift depreciated at a greater rate (-66.48%) than those with one (-55.85%)”, Tecnocasa pointed out. The size of property stands out as another important factor in the market. Prior to the outbreak of the housing and financial crisis, the prices of apartments of less than 70 square metres (small apartments) were higher than the prices for larger properties (over 70 square metres). This has changed and now the larger apartments are priced higher than the smaller ones (1,728 euros per square metre compared to 1,563 euros). The condition of the property is another consideration for most buyers, says Tecnocasa. “In relation to the condition of the homes, comparing sales of those in good condition with those needing some renovation, we see that in the first half of 2014 the price per square metre of the apartments in good condition was 1,633 euros and for those in a poor condition it stood at 1,584 euros.” Finally, El Mundo reported that the age of the property in which the apartment is located is an important factor. According to the study, the apartments situated in buildings of less than 40 years old are priced at 420 euros on average higher than those found in blocks of more than four decades old. Film review Song For Marion

“I’m not the life and soul of the party and full of joy and guts. I’m miserable old Arthur. I’ve ruined everything I had and it’s too late.” Arthur Harris played by British veteran actor Terence Stamp more akin to playing the arch villain is struggling to deal with his wife, Marion’s cancer. Undoubtedly he loves her, this is never in question being her main carer but to a point of over -protectiveness stifling her natural energy. His relationship with his son James is frosty. It seems as if James has proved a disappointment and Marion’s illness has caused a huge rift between them. Arthur is bad-tempered, the antithesis of his wife, Marion played by the renowned actress Vanessa Redgrave, held in such high-esteem by the American playwright Tennessee Williams as the greatest actress of our time. Within the partnership, she is the life force whereas Arthur represses his emotions, coming across as a misery dampening his wife’s enthusiasm for wanting to compete in a musical competition. “Maybe I’m crazy” and “Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world” or “Let’s talk about sex, baby” form part of the repertoire of the OAPzan unconventional type of choir chirpy and eccentric encouraged by a charismatic Elizabeth played by Gemma Arterton. ‘From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord deliver us’ is an ancient prayer attributed variously to being of Scottish or Cornish origin, each of course with close Celtic associations. There is in each of us, I suspect, a level of apprehension about such things, but to our Celtic ancestors there was very considerable fear, and the festival of Samhain (pronounced ‘sow-in’), which on the last day of October marked the end of summer and the start of the cold, dark winter, was a day when they believed the dead and other evil spirits came to cause trouble for the living. The Romans too had similar traditions, which after their conquest of Britain became assimilated and later ‘christianised’ in the festival of ‘All Saints Day’ (also known as ‘All Hallows’), which on November 1st is a time for celebrating the lives of all who have died in Christ. So, the day before All Saints, became known as ‘All Hallows Eve’, later shortened to ‘Halloween’. And here we go full circle as people nowadays celebrate with pumkin lanterns, dressing up as witches, spirits, ghosts, skeletons, etc., much as our pagan, Celtic ancestors might have done. So is it really all good clean fun? Or is there a risk that we may be dabbling in things we don’t understand? As a Christian I necessarily also believe in the reality of demons, so am wary of courting evil as so many seem to at Halloween. But far from being just another killjoy, spoiling other people’s fun I see October 31st as an opportunity for celebrating my certainty that Christ is able to defeat whatever the Devil may throw at me, for as St Paul wrote in his letter to Christians in Rome: “neither death, nor life; neither angels, nor demons, whether now or in the future; there’s no power either from above or from beneath, nor anything in all creation that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard, for any wishing to Worship; whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the website www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 600g of minced beef A small handful of mixed herbs 6-7 fresh vine tomatoes Salt and freshly ground black pepper A spoonful of sugar Tomato puree 2 beef oxo cubes A small glass of red wine Long spaghetti

Method

Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan. Add the onions and garlic, frying until softened. Increase the heat and add the minced beef. Fry it until it has browned, breaking down any chunks of meat with a wooden

spoon. Sprinkle the oxo cubes over the mince and stir so the colour and flavour spreads throughout the mince. Reduce the temperature and stir in the fresh vine tomatoes (leave these whole and squish when soft). Add the glass of red wine and season well with salt and pepper. Cover with a lid and simmer the bolognese sauce over a gentle heat for 1-1½ hours until it’s rich and thickened, stirring occasionally. At the end of the cooking time, add any extra seasoning if necessary. After tasting your sauce you may wish to add the sugar to reduce any acidity from the tomatoes. Remove from the heat to ‘settle’ while you cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling water (for the time stated on the packet). Drain and divide between warmed plates. Season with parmesan cheese if you wish and then enjoy... Source: www.butchers-shop.com

SOLTIMES october 2014

www.soltimes.com

Quite some time ago our swimming pool pump died, and was ejected from its pump house and replaced without ceremony. It was then left on the ground at the back of the house, waiting to be ‘got rid of.’ It remained on the gravel, easier to ignore than to deal with, but it had to be removed from our premises eventually; the only question was How? That was easy – the ever faithful Andy deposited it in the back of Del. This gave rise to the next question – Where? Not in the bin – not suitable. Not beside the bin – unsightly. Not beside somebody else’s bin – cheating, and very unneighbourly! Ah! Of course! The Arboleas Rag-and-Bone Family! (Probably more politically correctly termed The Arboleas Consortium for Recycled Materials). Arriving in Arboleas with my weighty load, I was unable to park conveniently close, but I did my best, and hoped that a stalwart family member, of whom there are several, would lift the darn thing out for me once he had seen and appreciated the size of the largesse I was offering. Stalwart

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

family members of the male variety were nowhere to be seen, but Grandma spotted me as I drew up, and rose to the challenge. I opened the boot and stood beside it looking tall, blond and English while Grandma waddled towards me looking short, wide and extremely swarthy. ‘Keh?’ she enquired, in a hopeful tone of voice. I began to explain that I had a defunct pump in my car, and wondered if she would like it para el reciclaje? She gazed at the pump as though it were worth a million dollars, then looked up at me. Although having all the grace in motion of an elephant seal in a supermarket, her expression displayed strength of character and practical intelligence, proving that you don’t get to be in the Consortium for Recycled Materials without knowing a thing or two. Her face melted into a beaming smile. ‘Sí, gracia.’ ‘It’s heavy, I’ll help you lift it.’ I flustered in Spanish, but before I’d got to pesada she had reached one brawny brown arm into the boot, grabbed the pump by its throat, and lifted it effortlessly out. With another beatific smile she lumbered off, gracia-ing away as she went, still carrying the million dollar pump in one hand as though it were no heavier than a loaf of bread. Remind me never, ever to attempt to arm wrestle with her!

Don’t Drink The Water It never ceases to amaze me what I read in the papers these days, and even more so the internet. Then again, the internet is a never ending black hole, which somehow has to be filled . . . with something, anything, needed to satisfy the voracious appetite of the constantly scrolling page. I was warned last week to, ‘Beware guys, we are entering the Cuffing Season.’ And there was I thinking it was just your bog standard weatherturns-to-rubbish autumnal season we were entering. But no. It’s more than that. As well as being a key dating season it’s also - apparently - a time when men and women race against time to find a partner to snuggle up with on cold winter nights. Ah, cuffing as in hand cuffing, it took me a while to work out, but I got there. The article explained now’s about the time I need to find someone if I want to guarantee a Christmas present, and line up my Valentine’s Day spending spree. Then, of course, after that we can go our separate ways ready for a carefree, sociable summer when it doesn’t feel so bad to be single. It all sounds so easy and matter of fact. To add weight to an already weighty piece of writing, the author pronounced, ‘it’s all the rage in the US.’ Well, if I’d been sceptical before, then that phrase convinced me – no thanks! In fact the whole article got right up my nose, which leads me nicely on to my next fascinating read. Have you blown your nose recently, or better still, had a look up it? Best

to try before you go to bed tonight, because you may have something lurking up there, in the dark recesses of your nasal cavity. A bit like the British backpacker who on her return home to Scotland, discovered she had a leach living in her nose, I kid you not, a leach. Alright, maybe I could understand a tiny, weenie, snotty little leach getting away with free board and lodging for a while, but a three inch monster. How would you breathe on that side for a start, wouldn’t your nose feel ‘different.’ She said she’d started to get nose bleeds three weeks before she came home, but put them down to a riding accident injury to her nose. When she got home, she started to notice something hanging from her nose, but dismissed it as congealed blood – as you do. I’d have been tempted to wonder how congealed blood can wriggle, but no matter. Then one morning about a month later, ‘Curly,’ as she subsequently christened her nasal guest, put in an appearance, ‘He almost touched my chin,’ she said. A friend took her to hospital where doctors, after quite a lot of pulling, managed to free the beast from his cosy home. He now lives in a sample bottle on her bedside table. Doctors said she had probably picked it up via the water in Asia, it had moved to her nose and grown. What a hoot. By Paul Martin

The Million Dollar Pump

alqueria

35

viewpoint The Gods of Alqueria

José García is privy to an age old secret. He is a conduit to the Gods of Alqueria. If anyone took the trouble to research his ancestry they would find that García’s is the oldest lineage in Alqueria. His forbears arrived long before the Hill People, even before a single house was constructed in the Village. His blood line can be traced to before the fall of Carthage, some 250 years before. It is during the reign of the Pharaoh Darius I that one must look for José’s earliest known ancestors. For during the rule of this rather nondescript monarch occurred the incident which is of importance to our research. Among the Pharaoh’s many artisans was one Imontop. Imontop was concubine grader to the Pharaoh as had his Father been and his Father before him. Although he enjoyed the work he found it somewhat frustrating and this was to be his downfall. Imontop was caught illegally test driving a concubine. He was duly exiled to the strange land across the water where the ‘green mist falls and the stale pong rises’. He was sent to what was to become Alqueria. Imontop, along with a group of fellow exiles soon established a rudimentary society complete with its very own Alquerian deity the Astral Goddess Opabord. Opabord’s glyph is resplendent in a cow-

horn crown. In her right hand she holds what looks suspiciously like a Remitroot plant and in her left hand, well let’s just say Manuela would be proud of her. Over the centuries as the Iberian continent endured invasion after invasion religions ebbed and flowed as did religious tolerance. Imontop and his successors were compelled to keep their deity and faith a secret for fear of persecution. As the deity of the Astral Goddess Opabord was driven underground so it became insular and therefore survived virtually unchanged to the present day. The deity may have survived but the same can not be said about the faithful. The high priest and channel to the Goddess, José García is his own and only disciple. Followers have fallen by the wayside over the years as the Goddess has failed time and time again to deliver on the prayers and offerings tendered in her name. García was also losing confidence. With all the ills that have befallen Alqueria over the years one would have expected at least one success from the Goddess Opabord. José García began to examine the very fundamental foundations of his faith, even questioning the very existence of the Goddess herself. Perhaps the answer is a simple one however. The job may just be too big for Opabord. It may need a more powerful deity. Alqueria and its problems are not for the faint hearted, even the Gods find the going tough.

advance moves

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

2014 Non Winners Singles Cup

The Non Winners Singles is the first of the 2014 autumn competitions. This is for those members who have not won a singles competition here in Spain or UK during the last five years. Twelve members entered this year with a mixture of experienced, fairly new and very new bowlers. It looked on paper to be a very good competitive competition and proved to be so. The two finalists were Wayne Roberts an old campaigner who had been in this position a few time in the past against a very new bowler, Maureen O’Hara had looked very impressive throughout the competition. As expected Wayne started well and at the tenth end was 17-7 ahead. Maureen then decided to come back and had cut the lead to 1712 taking four shots on the thirteenth

end. The next end Wayne won another shot and was six shots ahead. It looked at this stage that Wayne had at last was going to win this competition. Maureen, however didn’t agree and from this point on never let up, preventing Wayne from scoring anymore shots. Maureen was two shots down on the nineteenth end when she was leading 20-18 and on her last shot had perfect weight and slid around Wayne’s woods to win a very exciting match. This was a day which both players will not forget. It would be wrong not to mention the losing semi-finalists. First, Christine Parkinson, another very new bowler who put up a good show against Wayne. The other semifinalist against Maureen was our Lady Captain, Eileen Phoenix, who played extremely well but could not beat an in form Maureen. Our Captain, Colin Wright, just arrived back from UK, presented the Trophy and congratulated both finalists. He also thanked the spectators for their support and the markers, who without, we couldn’t run the competition. My thanks go to Colin with the help he gave me by Umpiring and marking the Final Vic Parsons - ABC Press Officer

BENEFITS OF ECU REMAPPING & WHY THE MANUFACTURERS DON’T DO IT! ECU remapping will not only improve the engines power and torque figures, it will also sharpen the throttle response and widen the power-band. This will make the power delivery a lot more linear, which in turn will make the vehicle feel a lot livelier to drive and the engine more flexible. Manufacturers generally sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations; different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity; different fuel quantities; different operating altitudes, etc. A manufacturer has to take all of these factors into consideration and make substantial compromises in the vehicles operation. As a driving enthusiast, you do not need or want such restrictions placed

upon your vehicles ECU and its performance therefore you can benefit from the hidden power and torque locked away within your engine management system.

The other main benefit of Call Paul on: remapping will be a reduction in 950104488 fuel consumption. With the extra torque especially at the bottom of the rev range you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input to maintain motorway speeds, you can drive in a higher gear at a slower speed as well as helping significantly when fully laden, towing or on gradients and even in start stop traffic. Remapping or fine tuning the ECU will improve the overall driveability, performance, and most importantly, the economy of most turbo diesel vehicles. well as some first timers who were very welcome.

Hole in One On Saturday 11th October Urcal Golf Society played its latest game at Marina. It was most memorable for a superb hole in one by Trevor Nicholson on the very difficult Par three ninth hole. With the green in an elevated position it was impossible to see the ball enter the hole but the elation when the ball was found nestling in the bottom of the cup was heard all over the course. Well done to Trevor who also rounded off a brilliant day for himself by claiming the nearest the pin prize on the seventeen par three. The turnout for the Texas Scramble was extremely good and several of our newer members were present as

We offer a 30 day money back guarantee if for any reason you are not delighted with the results. Also a lifetime software guarantee.

The winning team with a net 59 were Trevor Nicholson (who else), Phil Harris , Dave Butler, making a welcome return after several months in England and Ron Thomas. Second place also on 59 but loosing first place on count back were Barry Kilby, Les Brice , Dave Edmonds and Bob Wormsley with third place going to the team of Garry Funnell, Alister McEwan, Dave White and Chistine Nicholson. Other prizes were claimed by a very surprised Les Brice for the longest drive on the 15th and Dave Edmonds for nearest the pin on the 5th par three hole. Six teams enjoyed a very good contest and as the rain kept away it turned out to be a superb day especially in the Nicholson house. If anyone is interested in joining our friendly society then please contact our Captain Steve Dodd on 608 238 827 you will be made to feel most welcome as will any guests who wish to play.

Council Sells Off Hotels To Reclaim Tax Debts As I reported a few months ago, the Council of Roquetas has gone ahead with its plan to auction off property owned by companies who don’t pay their taxes. The Fund Raising Office announced in August it would be auctioning property owned by 15 companies and one private individual. The names were published in the Provincial Bulletin and gave, ‘non payment of IBI, refuse collection and other local taxes,’ as the reason the properties are being put up for sale. The auction took place as planned last Wednesday and prices given by the council range from 25,000 euros for a small shop, up to 14 million for an hotel: the sum total amounts to almost 33 million euros. Other assets include 27 houses, three of them still under construction, 4 apartments and 5 plots of land. The most striking items on the list are the Bellavista Mar Hotel in the Playa Serena and the Colonial Hotel in Las Salinas. The Bellavista is registered under the ownership of South Eastern Hotels, which has an outstanding mortgage debt of almost 13 million euros from the Citymar leasing group; also included with the hotel are a number of apartments and a shop. The Colonial is in a similar situation, with a large

By Martin Shortland

outstanding sum owed by the hotel owners to the Sabenall Bank. Each hotel has been under leasing arrangements with different independent operating companies. The Bellavista was in the news on these pages in August, when residents held a demonstration in the foyer. The guests had filed complaints with the hotel over a number of issues, namely poor maintenance, low levels of cleaning and hygiene and poor quality food and service. They also claimed that air conditioning was not working correctly and that rooms were not being cleaned properly, as well as insufficient provision of towels and linen. Other complaints included what guests considered to be a lack of sufficient staff to cope with guest numbers during the peak holiday season. Miguel Colacios, head of the Fund Raising Office explained the complex procedures which are involved with such a debt collecting exercise, he said, “It’s not just a simple case of selling off the properties involved. There are often two or three companies involved, especially with the larger properties, so the legal processes are far from straightforward.” The auction last week, held at the Town Hall, was the first of

what could turn out to be a complicated process, which might ultimately end up in the courts of law. In one example, 12 different companies and one individual are involved with a building development in Aguadulce, Mr Colacios said this was not unusual, but that it would take a considerable amount of time to get everyone sitting round the table to come to an agreement over the sale. He added, “Ultimately, the Council will go ahead anyway, whether the owners are in agreement or not, we are very aware that taxpayer’s money should not be wasted.” There were originally 64 lots put up for sale in August, but this has now been reduced to 52, as owners have come forward and either partially or totally settled their debts. The Colonial Hotel is the largest lot and will no doubt prove to be the hardest to sell in one piece. Although appearing on the sales sheet as one lot, it is in fact sub-divided into dozens of potential smaller lots. Bars, gymnasiums, shops, apartments, a pub and fitness centre can all be sold off as individual purchases if required. The next meeting of the Fund Raising offices auction committee will take place on 12th November, when it’s

expected a number of deals will have been made by various owners to pay off their debts. The worry though as far as the community is concerned, is that the three hotels – there’s another smaller hotel, The Andarax in Aguadulce – could well remain shut for years to come. There have been a number of examples in the Urbanisation in recent years where hotels have been forced to close because of non payment of taxes and they stay closed for a long time; the Golf Trinidad is the most recent example – it re-opened under new ownership last year after a three year closure. Any hotel closure has a dual impact on the community; firstly, up to five hundred people lose their jobs and secondly, the properties soon become vandalised and then do nothing to enhance the neighbourhood they’re situated in. The financial crisis is far from over in Spain as a whole and in Andalucia in particular, so the prospect of two large four star tourist hotels being taken out of the equation, is not an encouraging one. The area needs every possible means at its disposal to boost the local economy, it needs to provide jobs for its residents and also bring visitors to the area to spend their money.

Roquetas Taxi Drivers Say ‘No’ To New Working Practises The General Assembly of taxi drivers in Roquetas met last Wednesday at the Municipal Library to discuss a proposal to regulate the number of hours they work. The turnout was higher than for many years and was clearly a reflection of how the drivers felt about the proposed changes to their work routine. They were voting on whether to introduce a mandatory rest day, something which has been in force not only in Almeria, but in many cities across Spain for a number of years now. The key to the argument from those in favour of the rest day is that drivers should not lose money by having to take the mandatory day off. After a long and sometimes heated debate,

By Martin Shortland

the vote in favour of the proposal was lost, when four of the drivers who had previously given their support to the motion, changed their minds. I spoke to the leader of the taxi drivers collective, Migel Montoya, after the meeting and he told me many of the drivers were suspicious of change. He said the nature of the job meant they could more or less decide when they worked and for how long, adding, “Some of the drivers have larger financial commitments and feel the need to work seven days a week – that’s our problem.” His greatest concern is the health and safety issue, because drivers were often working 12 – 14 hours a day without a break, which he said is

posing a threat to drivers, passengers and other road users. He told me of a recent case where a taxi had been hired at the airport to take three people to Vera. The driver had been working since the early morning and without a day off for weeks; shortly before leaving the motorway at the Vera exit, he lost control of the vehicle, left the road and ended up in a field. Neither he nor his passengers were seriously injured, but he later admitted to police he thought he had gone to sleep at the wheel. Another point Migel Montoya made was that if vehicles were on the road seven days a week, they were not being serviced properly, which raises another health and safety issue. Supporters of a regular taxi service

have requested in recent years the mediation of the Council to try and achieve a consensus among the drivers. Two years ago, they sent a full report to the Mayor, showing the benefits of the scheme and giving examples how it works very successfully in other cities. They have not received a response yet. Clearly, as far as the customer is concerned, it is important to have sufficient numbers of taxis available on the street and is equally important that the drivers don’t lose out on their income. For the moment, it would seem the taxi service in Roquetas will continue as it has done in the past; the vote on Wednesday put an end to any changes for the foreseeable future
