Spain’s Duchess of Alba dies aged 88

Spain’s eccentric Duchess of Alba, the world’s most titled noble and a nature treasure in her homeland, has died at the age of 88 in Seville Maria del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart died at her home in downtown Seville, the elegant Palacio de las Dueñas. She was admitted to hospital in Seville on Sunday with pneumonia and possible heart problems after having suffered a stomach virus a few days earlier. Reports earlier in the week suggested the duchess was recovering but on Tuesday, she was taken home to be with her six children and her 64-year-old husband Alfonso Díez. The announcement of her death was made by Seville mayor Juan Ignacio Zoido on Thursday. Her body will lie in state in the Andalusian capital, town hall sources told Spain’s Europa Press news agency. Her funeral will take place at 12pm on Friday. Born in Madrid in 1926, the 18th Duchess of Alba had more titles than any other noble on Earth according to Guinness World Records, which lists 57 titles for her due to her complex international ancestry. Spaniards followed with fascination the story of her last wedding — the third marriage for the twice-widowed duchess. The duchess had to work hard to overcome the opposition to that marriage by her children, whose own divorces and affairs have for years filled the pages of Spain’s

gossip magazines. Díez renounced any claim to the duchess’s wealth and just before the wedding she divided up much of her estate among her five sons and one daughter in her will. She kept control over the assets — reputedly worth between 600 million and 3.5 billion euros ($750 million and $4.4 billion) — until her death. “Nobody pressured me. I am not someone who lets herself be influenced,” she told Spanish celebrity magazine Hola at her luxury home on Ibiza. After her last wedding, the aristocrat kicked off her shoes and danced flamenco on a red carpet at the entrance of her 15thcentury Duenas Palace in Seville, before throwing her bouquet into a crowd of wellwishers. Six out of 10 Spanish youths plan to move abroad to find a job, study finds

Spanish youths are among Europe’s most pessimistic when it comes to their future, a study of several EU member states suggests. Spanish youngsters feel that they will be worse off than their own parents, while six out of every 10 polled are planning to move abroad in search of a job, according to a survey by the Vodafone Institute for Society and Communications. The study by the telecoms company surveyed more than 6,000 people aged between 18 and 30 in Britain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Czech Republic and Spain. Spaniards and Italians showed the least confidence in finding a job in their own countries, while 58 percent of Spanish youths said they were planning to move abroad to find a job, compared with 21 percent of young Germans. Yet this open attitude toward emigration is in contrast with the fact that only one out of four young Spaniards report having ever lived in a different country. Asked whether they expected better living standards than their parents’ generation, only 29 percent of Spaniards replied

affirmatively, compared with 43 percent of Germans. As for job prospects, only 40 percent of surveyed Spaniards thought they might find an occupation in keeping with their own studies and training, compared with 66 percent of Germans and 59 percent of British youths. Spain is the only country where “avoiding unemployment” was a more powerful reason to accept a job than the salary Working conditions also vary considerably from country to country. While 38 to 44 percent of youths in Germany, Britain and Czech Republic have full-time jobs, in Spain and Italy that figure drops to 20 and 18 percent, respectively. Spain was the only participating country where “avoiding unemployment” was a more powerful reason to accept a job than the salary. Spain and Italy also showed that young people there stay in school longer to make up for the lack of job opportunities: in Spain, 65 percent of those surveyed continued to study even though they felt they were ready to work. The most positive results for Spain were in entrepreneurial desire, with 40 percent interested in starting their own business. A majority reported a wish to work in the field of information technology. The main reason for embracing self-employment is a lack of opportunities finding a job with an existing company. We also donate parcels after each month’s meeting. We are only able to support the community this way through the most generous donations given by Walk for Life, Sophia’s, Jennie’s Line Dancers. The Taverners Golf Society, Sol Yoga Centre, the Almanzora Theatre Group, friends, neighbours and clients and our own Little Owls. We are most grateful to each and everyone one of them as this will help us to continue our voluntary work around the area. Little Owls is a voluntary support group. We provide emotional and practical support to those who are living with terminal illness, people

who are dealing with disabilities or immobility through illness, people who are bereaved or lonely, or indeed anyone who may need help in some small way. Little Owls provide a listening ear and talk through any worries people may have. We can provide information on local services available to those needing further help and can offer practical help from shopping, ironing, or simply dropping in for a coffee and a chat. Our volunteers also offer carers a short break from their caring role, even if it is just a few hours a week, which can make things just that little bit easier. Being able to leave your loved one with someone you can trust, so you can take the dog for a long walk, go shopping or just sit quietly in the garden with a book, can make such a big difference. Spain’s Castile–La Mancha region has announced a total ban on the use of phones in schools in a bid to end “a daily battle” between teachers and students. To date, individual schools in the region have been responsible for drawing up their own rules on the use of smartphones in classrooms. Now, however, Castile–La Mancha is cracking down. On November 18th, the region rolled out a ban which means students are forbidden from using their phones in class except in special cases where they will be used as an educational tool. In such cases, prior permission must be sought from teachers and families. Students who break the rules will suffer minor punishments including being deprived of a break, or staying behind after school. The law has been brought in to end the “daily battle” between teachers and students, Félix Aparicio, the director of studies at Albacete’s Bachiller Sabuco secondary school told regional daily La Tribuna de Albacete. Aparicio said that younger children generally did not bring their phones into class but that from the age of 13 or 14 onward, this was standard practice. He stressed that this was a problem not just during class but also when it came to homework, and made special mention of the indiscriminate use of WhatsApp groups. Around eight percent of the complaints received by

2014 week 9 Back into the studio this week and with 4 men, 4 women and just 4 weeks to the final the heat is on! Who is going to be dedicated enough to put in the hours to outdo their opposition? Opening the show this week were Steve Backshall and Ola with a Jive. Oh dear! not Steve’s dance. He was struggling with timing issues from the off which continued throughout and combined with poor quality kicks and flicks must put him at risk of the bottom 2 this week. That said the lifts they performed were carried out with ease. I gave him 4 and the judges 23. Following onto the dance floor were Caroline Flack and Pasha with an American Smooth. After a wardrobe malfunction as she reached the floor (she slipped on her dress coming down from the stairs) she performed a fabulous routine to perfection at a rapid pace which included some really nice lifts and tricks. I awarded her 9 and the judges 33. Pixie Lott and Trent then did a Charleston to

teachers relate to the use of smartphones, according to Inmaculada Suárez of the teaching union Anpe, who highlighted the difficulty of integrating the use mobile of mobile phones into the classroom. “Mobile phones aren’t necessary and students shouldn’t use them in class or during break time,” she told Spanish news site El Diario. But some schools are taking a different approach. “Previously we prohibited all mobile phones and other types of electronic devices. You can ban what you like but the reality is that students will bring (phones to class),” Antoni Aparici at Barcelona’s Joaquim Pla i Ferreras school told El Diario. “The ban also caused contradictions, because our centre is following a programme where students use tablets and computers in certain courses, so it didn’t much sense to stop them carrying electronic devices,” Aparici said. Now the school has put a system in place where students can ask teachers if they can use their phone for task like photographing blackboards containing key information. The system has been a success, according to staff. Critically, there has been less tension over the confiscation of phones, a situation which can sometimes lead to aggressive behaviour as students are reluctant to part with their devices. Some 56 percent of Spanish school students have admitted to using their mobile phones in class despite bans, while 72 percent are against a blanket ban on such phones in schools, a study by the some gifts for Christmas from one social media platform Tuenti revealed. of the many stalls, there will be bargains for everyone. If you would Currently, the Spanish regions of Murcia and like a stall of your own please E-mail Galicia are looking at Soo Wallace on sillyboo59@yahoo. legal bans on mobile co.uk We look forward to seeing you phones in schools. and many thanks in advance for your Source: http://www. support. thelocal.es/

Diamonds are Forever. Another very fast paced routine full of Charleston swivels and tricks. For me however, a little disappointing as she was doing the swivels with two bent legs which looked odd and her lifts looked very heavy in the air. But as we expect from Pixie she performed extremely well. I gave her 9 and the judges 37. Mark Wright and Karen then came out to perform a Tango. This for me was a bit of a mixed bag, good bits and bad bits. In hold the frame was quite good, the characterisation was good as was his top line until you saw the bottom stuck out at the back! That said great intensity and for that reason I gave him 8 and the judges 32. Following were Frankie Bridge and Kevin with a Viennese Waltz to ‘Whats New Pussycat’ In practice Frankie suffered with motion sickness because of all the turns involved in this dance but on the night you wouldn’t have known. Her top line and body contact were held throughout the dance and

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635584 431

her transitions between the various steps was excellent. I awarded her 10 and the judges 38. Next was Jake Wood and Janette with Samba. This was a fabulous piece of entertainment, talk about snake hips! And some! This was danced to the Macarena which was included in the choreography as was ‘twerking’ and he managed to make it look sexy! As always Jake always sells what he is doing to perfection, the only negative was that the technique on the Samba needed quite a bit more work. I gave him 9 and the judges 38. Sunetra Sarker and Brendan then danced a Waltz. Sunetra is prone to making errors during her performances and this was no exception. Unfortunately, the errors were highlighted with ‘lumpy’ bits in her Waltz. She did manage to get the slide and glide of the Waltz well which appeared nice and smooth so I awarded her 6 and the judges 30. Closing the show this week were Simon Webbe and Kristina with Salsa to ‘Let’s hear it for the boys’.

After his Argentine Tango last week I didn’t think he could get anywhere near the performance but he certainly proved me wrong. The armography he did was so complex and was carried out with ease throughout as was the choreography which was also some of the most difficult I’ve seen in any ‘Strictly’ series. I again gave him a 10 and the judges 36. So this week the judges bottom 2 were Steve and Sunetra as were mine and their top 2 were Frankie and Jake where mine were Frankie and Simon. The public bottom 2 were also Sunetra and Steve with Steve leaving the show after the dance off and a 3-1 judges vote, so with just 7 celebrities left can the lower marked rise up to the top? or will the top celebrities hold onto their slots? Can’t wait til next week. Don’t forget that you can come and catch up on the ‘strictly’ gossip at one of our classes but in the meantime - Keep Dancing!

We can provide transport and translation. Next year it is more important than ever to vote. Also, those of you who think you are on the register must check that you still are on it as names are often removed after a period of time and without notice. This applies particularly to non-residents, whose names can be taken off the register after 2 years and residents after 5 years. You can also ring up to check your status on the “padrón” and “censo” to the I.N.E and they will tell you your actual situation, if you are NOT on the “census” you CAN NOT VOTE. To keep bed linen affordable, a combination of linen and cotton brings the qualities of both yarns together. Cotton Sateen: This is a weaving technique that is slightly more expensive to weaving classic cotton cloth. This different process produces a bed linen that is incredibly soft to handle and has a fabulous sheen. Chambray: Often referred to as ‘yarn dye’, chambray is made up of a warp and weft thread of different colours. This weaving technique gives a smart, sophisticated look to plain cotton bed linen. from the continuous fibre the silk caterpillar makes to cocoon itself during its transformation into a moth. In the manufacturing process, fibres from several cocoons are twisted together to make a yarn of suitable thickness for weaving. It commands a high price tag, but its superb dyeing qualities make it a true luxury fabric that needs care and attention to keep it looking good.

Dangerous dogs? It’s the owners that are dangerous!

VIERNES is a very special dog. He has a loving and good natured personality. However, he is not just any dog, he is a pit-bull and that puts him in the ominous category of dogs called ‘DANGEROUS BREEDS’ (RAZAS PELIGROSAS). VIERNES and other dogs of this category that have been abandoned at the shelter prove that this title is unfair and totally erroneous. The true fact of this matter is that it is the human beings that are the dangerous ones. These are the people that mistreat the dogs and train them to become aggressive. When VIERNES was abandoned at the shelter (SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR’) he was in a very poor physical condition. He had a Demodex infection, mainly on the face. Demodex is also called ‘Demodectic Mange’ or ‘Red Mange’. This is caused by a sensitivity to and caused by an overpopulation of ‘Demodex Canis’ as the animal’s immune system becomes unable to keep the mites under control. ‘Demodex Canis occurs naturally in the hair follicles of most dogs in low numbers around the face and other areas of the body. In most dogs these mites never cause problems. However, in certain conditions, such as an underdeveloped or impaired immune system, intense stress or malnutrition, the mites can reproduce rapidly. VIERNES has been given the appropriate treatment and his condition has improved greatly. What this gentle affectionate dog needs now is a forever home. Two weeks ago we wrote about TERESITA who had a cracked spine and needed an operation costing 800 Euros and the shelter asked for assistance in paying for this operation as it could not afford to pay for it. The veterinary carried out this operation on a pay later arrangement. TERESITA stayed in the clinic and then went off to a foster home to recover. We are sad to announce that TERESITA, in spite of all the loving care in her last few weeks subsequently died. This leaves the shelter with the bill for her operation. You may want to assist the shelter to pay this bill and the Bank account is: ES4630580064692720010585. Please indicate that the money is specifically for TERESITA. Last week we wrote about NACHO. He also went to a foster home to recover but unfortunately he was too weak and he also died despite all the desperate efforts to save him. We can only hope that the people who caused these two tragedies will reflect on their evil ways. If you want to contact the shelter, you can do so via Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com

welcome to La alfoquia

La Alfoquia is a town within the municipality of Zurgena with a mix of nationalities enjoying the traditions and customs of this locality. The town is made up of around a thousand inhabitants, situated o¬n the left bank of the Almanzora River. By the various studies and consultations carried out to diverse levels, it can be affirmed that the Arabian word, FOQUIA (AL, would be the article) signifies something that is higher than something else. “The High o¬ne”, “The High Thing”, “The Upper Thing”, but in reference to another lower... thing! Because of it, it is thought that the Arabs that inhabited the nucleus of Zurgena, when they crossed the river, they distinguished among the lower part of the plantation plots named Tamarchete and the o¬ne that was above them, Alfoquia. The beginnings of the urban area of Alfoquia was limited, in its origins, to diverse farmhouses disseminated along the “Pago de Alfoquia”, of where took its name. When the Lorca-Baza railroad was inaugurated in 1894, some constructions for storage of the products were initiated that arrived or left for the railroad. This meant that the workers and their families needed housing and so the

population actually grew from workers from many different places. The growth occurred slowly but surely over 60 years giving it a cosmopolitan population from the start. Without doubt, La Alfoquia owes its true origin to the railroad, in fact during almost all of the 20th Century, the town was known as The Station and was o¬nly given that of Alfoquia in the official media of the Town Hall of Zurgena. The so named “House or Store of the Aunt Magdalene” was o¬ne of the symbolic buildings of La Alfoquia until May 30th, 1997 when the machines, due to their poor state, put an end to it. The house was a witness to all kinds of activities: Dwelling, goods Depot for wheat, Christmas celebrations, anniversaries, weddings, etc. Since the establishment of the railroad, La Alfoquia supplied itself with water by installing tubing descending from Tijola. In July 18th of 1963, during the times of Franco, the building of the pipeline was started, the o¬nly fault that the system had was that the water came from sand banks in the Almanzora. Being of very bad quality, drinking water was limited to that brought to the town by R.E.N.F.E. (Spanish Rail).Three taps were installed in different parts of the town to provide water for public general use, soon after, groups of and individual neighbours begun to tap into the water supply, redirecting the water to their homes. In La Alfoquia there have been two grain mills, o¬ne used to obtain food for people and the other for their animals. o¬ne moved by the water of the stream of Tamarchete, the other, with electric current, situated in the center of the town. Today they are in disuse although the second, may be seen functioning during various events. Viva-almeria.com

Each treatment session provides a form of passive muscle exercise. It is a type of alternating current, meaning that changes its polarity at certain preset times, and that stimulates muscles by nervous excitement. Each stimulus causes a contraction and then there is a period of rest.

A succession of impulses follows a certain order called frequency, whose unit of measure is Hertz. This reflects the number of pulses per second, for example, a frequency of 10Hz means that are passing stimuli every ten seconds. This technique aims to provide a passive isometric work improving facial contours and reducing muscle flaccidity frame with consequent improvement of peripheral circulation. It is applied by electrodes of silicone rubber and Chamex (vegetable sponge) moistened to facilitate transmission of the current.

greater tendency to sagging (regions chin, zygomatic, among others). The low frequency faradic current has the ability to produce muscle contractions that increase muscle tone, being applied for muscular sagging and hypertonia cases. Muscular contractions act on the circulatory system causing stimulation of blood circulation and lymphatic circulation to return. Over the local metabolism a stimulus is produced with increased metabolic exchanges. According to medical indications, aesthetic and physical therapy, the main effects of low-frequency currents are: excitomotor, vasomotor, metabolic activator and analgesic. Among the aesthetic indications we can highlight: laxity and atone muscular, circulatory stasis, cellulite treatments. Within the medical field, the faradic current has a generator and electrical stimuli cables with current conducting plates that are tailored to the body in areas where there is need for muscle stimulation (abdomen, buttocks, arms, areas such as inner and outer thighs, etc. .) Muscle contraction performed by faradic current is similar to the active isometric exercise that aims to stimulate muscle metabolism.

As an aesthetic treatment microcurrent stimulation has been shown to have a number of other cosmetic benefits. • Re-educates muscles. • Increase bloody lymph circulation. • Enhances the penetration of the active ingredients of skin care formulations • Increases the production of collagen and elastin. • Increases protein synthesis, gluconeogenesis and cell membrane transport. • Increases mitochondria activity, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) Micro-current in aesthetics is commonly described as ….. “Facial toning” or “non-surgical Face lifting” *due to the dramatic lifting effect that micro-current has on facial muscles and facial contours. True micro-current uses a current with an intensity of less than one millionth of an amp (<1mA) and because of its mirror image it produces the natural affects that your own collagen should respond to so is totally safe and effective. ...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

SOLTIMES november 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last time we looked at the desktop as a metaphor for your workspace and how it has evolved. Today, as a result of a question asked at my clinic, we will look at ‘Sleep’, ‘Hibernate’ and ‘Power Off’ options. Where would you find these options anyway? When you have done ‘for now’ most of use will simply leave the computer running until we are ready to ‘get at it’ again. For most of the time that is the right option to use. But, we live in Spain where the power isn’t always stable or clean, leaving the computer running might mean loosing everything that you have done if the power suddenly stops! For the rest of us, the other option is to turn off the computer, turning it back on when we need to. So, what is ‘Sleep’, ‘Hibernate’ and ‘Power Off’? Well, the first two are methods of putting the computer into a ‘Low Power’ mode that will let you come back to exactly where you were working, when you put it into that mode. I know, I does sound like some ‘techno-ese’ but, I promise, that when we have finished, you will have a much better understanding of which one to use. OK then, What does ‘Sleep’ have to offer that ‘Power Off’ or ‘Hibernate’ doesn’t. Sleep mode, whether it is Windows, Linux or Apple is very much the same thing. Putting your computer into ‘Sleep Mode’, puts it into a very low power mode. Everything that you are working on is kept in memory, just as if you were working on it, but turns everything else off. The biggest users of power are the screen (laptops) and hard drives (every computer). As both of these are turned off, the power needed to maintain the work is now minimal! What other benefits does the ‘Sleep’ mode have? It will allow your computer, literally at the touch of a button (keyboard key), come back to life within seconds where you can, at this point, return to

whatever you were doing. This is the part of the TV advert which shows ‘the fastest ever ‘Startup’ (a sales lie!). This mode is great with a laptop because of the inbuilt battery but not so good with the desktop unless you have an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). Second option is ‘Hibernate’! This mode has advantages and disadvantages over ‘Sleep’. When shutting down in ‘Hibernate’ mode the computer makes a copy of everything that is stored in the memory (Random Access Memory), to the hard disk in a file and then turns the computer off. This also means that you don’t have to save that spreadsheet or document, as everything is being save, exactly as it is. So what are the advantages? As your computer is off, any power loss or spikes will not affect anything that you have done, and more importantly, you are not using expensive Spanish electric and you are able to resume working exactly where you left off! Now, for the disadvantages! It takes nearly as long to restart as simply starting from cold! As you can see the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and for a Desktop / Tower where you are writing a 50,000 word book or thesis, then this option has far more going for it than the ‘instant on’ facility of ‘Sleep’. I appreciate that most people out here prefer the Laptop, because of its compact simplicity, but have to include us ‘Box’ users too. Do I have a suggestion as to which on to use? I would love to be the ‘All Knowing’ Oracle, but I’m not able to make choices for anyone other than myself! Ask yourself these questions. Do I really need to get back to my task immediately? Can what I’m doing be lost if it doesn’t come back on? If you answer ‘Yes’ to these questions then ‘Sleep’ mode may well be the best thing for you. I use it when I on a call-out to monitor distance and time to make sure I don’t over charge and it works!

For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

Let’s Be Careful Out There The Junta de Andalucía demolished two more homes in Cantoria last week. The poor owners after going through years of torment got the final kick in the teeth when their homes bought in good faith were torn down. Compensation could supposedly be claimed from the ex-Mayor who is now languishing in prison and the developer but conveniently they both declared themselves bankrupt when ordered to cough up. Working in the property industry for the last eight years I find it impossible to believe that ‘if’ any estate agents were involved in these sales that they didn’t know something was amiss. Lawyers also; if as impartial as their clients believed and paid them to be; could and should have stopped many of these contracts from ever being signed. The saying ‘buyer beware’ and even worse ‘leaving brains on the plane’ must ring hollow to any owner going through the heartache and worry that their lives and savings tied up in

Spanish hotline on benefit fraud

Calls to benefit fraud hotline double, thanks to honest Brits

Calls to the benefit fraud hotline in Spain have doubled since the British Government launched a major advertising campaign during the last week of October to encourage the public to call the hotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and to urge claimants to report changes in their circumstances. The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraud hotline in Spain – 900 55 44 40 – has seen a surge in vital tip-offs that fraud investigators are now pursuing to verify if people are claiming benefits illegally. Awareness of the campaign and associated media coverage among expatriates in Spain, and their willingness to call the hotline, is helping investigators to reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’ money on fraudsters. Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harper said: “Hard working taxpayers have had enough of fraudsters taking money which is meant for genuine claimants, which is why we’re seeing so many people taking action by calling the hotline. We know it’s a small minority who commit benefit fraud but I would urge anyone who has suspicions to call the free and confidential number or report them anonymously online.” Worldwide, someone is reported to benefit fraud hotlines every minute of every working day on average, and in the last year alone nearly 60,000 fraud investigations have been launched. The Government has recovered nearly one billion pounds of wrongly paid benefits in the last year, and has introduced a raft of measures to crack down on people who cheat the system - both abroad and in the UK – including: • Tough new rules so that 40% of individuals’ benefits can be taken to repay stolen cash - on top of any fine or custodial sentence handed out by the courts; • Increased penalties from £2,000 to £5,000, without taking a fraudster to court; • A new £50 civil penalty for claimants who negligently give incorrect information on their claims or fail to report a change in circumstances which results in overpayments. If you suspect a benefit cheat, call the confidential hotline on 900 55 44 40 - open from 8am to 4pm every weekday in Spain - or report them online at www.dwp.gov.uk/benefit-thieves-spain. Spanish bricks are going to be reduced to dust. Carlos Lesmes, Chief Magistrate of Spain’s Supreme Court recently said that the court service is only fit for chicken thieves’ not major fraud cases. When the boss admits it’s bad then it’s bad! The Junta de Andalucía has the right to demolish homes before any compensation is paid to owners. In fact the Junta will only compensate if the building licence was declared void. Conveniently for them, these latest licences were counterfeit so couldn’t be rescinded as they weren’t issued in the first place. How Spain is only listed as No. 7 in the list of corrupt countries is beyond me; surely even Spanish building inspectors could see land being cleared, roads built, supply pipes and pylons put in, foundations laid, actual houses, garages and pools built and huge bill boards advertising where these illegal properties are available for sale. Why only years down the line are the Junta

supposedly getting their house (an unfortunate phrase) in order? With 300,000 illegal properties in Andalucía how can the powers that be say they never noticed a thing until years later? In the Balearics, the regional authorities proposed a sensible amnesty for building works done without a licence from eight or more years ago. This put smiles on 30,000 home owners’ faces until it was noticed that back in July when the law was rubber stamped in the voting chamber; the portrait of King Juan Carlos hanging on the wall should have been replaced by a portrait of recently crowned Felipe VI. The fact that the Balearics had not yet been sent a picture of the new king wearing his snazzy new crown to stick on the wall; nor even been told that they had to do this means nothing under Spanish law and all laws passed could be declared void for the days they committed this heinous crime against the Spanish

Crown. Newspapers and websites across the world spread news of all the buck passing and demolitions, of imprisoned Mayors and ordinary folk having been swindled out of their savings with their dreams shattered. Andalucía has done very well thank you very much from all the people that have invested money here in their quest for a sunny retirement. Johnny foreigner pays taxes in one way or another, uses goods and services creating employment and wealth; yet all run the risk of being kicked in the wallet. Lastly owners hoping to do holiday lets next year should seek advice as a new law soon comes into force requiring properties to be registered with local councils. Owners need to have a first occupation licence. From Hill Street Blues; Sergeant Esterhaus’s phrase ‘Let’s be careful out there’ springs to mind!

Spanish Property Market To Home Rental Help Economy Grow In 2015 Prices Rose by 0.3% in October

After years dragging down the Spanish economy, the property sector will finally start expanding and contributing to growth in 2015, argues a new report titled ‘The Case for Spain III: Plus Ultra’ by Arcano, a financial advisory and

asset management company. The report claims that in 2015, both the residential construction sector, and Spanish property prices, will come back to life. This will mainly be due to (1) an improvement in credit conditions with increasing mortgage approvals, (2) ACACIA VILLAS a higher share of foreign investment, and (3) a PROPERTY SALES recovery of demand in info@acaciavillas.net Spain. According to a recent report carried out by property portal, fotocasa.es, the average price of rental housing in Spain increased by 0.3% in October, compared to the previous month, bringing the price per square metre per month to 6.77 euros. In year-onyear terms, rental prices dropped by 2.8% in October, compared with the same month in 2013. Specifically, seven regions have registered declines in excess of 30% since the maximum prices reached seven years ago. The region which has registered the greatest reduction in rental housing prices is Aragón, with an accumulated decline of -42.6%, followed by the regions of Valencia (-37.3%), Cantabria (-36.5%),

The second most expensive region is Madrid, with 9.20 euros per square meter, followed by Catalonia, with 8.78 euros per square metre. In contrast, the region of Extremadura has the cheapest home rentals, per square metre, with the price standing at 4.5 euros, followed by Castilla-La Mancha, at 4.71 euros per square metre. LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

Inheritance Tax

Q. My wife and myself (71 and 68 ) live in Spain since 2006. We are both to the best of our knowledge tax residents. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180000 euro and savings of aprox. 40000. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax would we pay if we decided to sell. A. You are going to like the answers.

Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled as resident of Andalucía to 175000 euro tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175000 euro exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16000 euro. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years previous to the death. Believe it or not very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true: A wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813000 euro from her husband would pay just under 200000 euro in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax). Could the lady have avoided the tax. Yes, but the tax planning would have required the

family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax. Michael Davies. Abogado. Member 1748 of Almeria Law Society. Member 67228 of Madrid Law Society. Ex-Honorary British Consul. NON-RESIDENT INCOME TAX. We are still receiving many enquiries about non-resident income tax. (What is it? /do we really have to pay it if we do not rent out our property? / What do you recommend we do if we have never paid it? ) To avoid any doubts: If you are non resident of Spain and own a property you must file a non resident income tax return every year even if you have never rented out the property. Please note that the tax office has no obligation of informing you of this. Do not confuse this tax with rates (IBI), which is a local tax and nothing to do with non-resident tax. If you have never paid it I recommend you approach a solicitor like ourselves to take care of putting things back into good order, before they claim it with surcharges or worse still consider that if you are not filing it you must be a tax resident and come after you for your world wide income and fining you for not filing a 720 declaration of worldwide assets obligatory for residents.

Real Estate and Construction Will Boost Spain’s Economic Growth in 2015

According to a report carried out by independent financial advisors, Arcano, entitled ‘The Case for Spain III: Plus Ultra‘, the real estate sector and construction will be the engines of economic growth in Spain in 2015, as well as company and household financing. The fall in fuel prices could also boost the growth of the economy, along with the depreciation of the euro against the dollar, the European Central Bank’s monetary stimulus and the fiscal policy. The report suggests that this growth could be above the 2% predicted by the Spanish Government. Due to an improvement in financing, granting of mortgages, the return of foreign investors and a recovery in domestic demand, as well as the necessary reactivation in the construction of new homes, the financial body forecasts that by 2015 there will be a resurgence in the

residential building sector and the price of housing in Spain. The report considers that the renewed offer of bank financing is due to the liquidity and solvency of the system having greatly improved since the end of 2013, and notes that the flow of new credit to households and SMEs is positive and is growing, which clearly supports economic growth. Ten risks to the Spanish economy are also listed in the report, which are: complacency; debt; demography; energy dependency; fiscal sustainability; institutional crisis; low inflation; sustainability of growth in the long term, wage recovery and unemployment. According to El Economista, the report states: “These risks, although tremendous, are, however, much less than those Spain had in 2007″. Source: http://news.kyero.com/

News Countries with No Minimum Wage Have Higher Salaries and Less Unemployment

The latest informative bulletin published by the National Institute of Statistics, entitled ‘Wages in Spain and the EU‘, notes that several of the countries that have no established minimum wage actually have much higher average salaries. In addition, the unemployment rate in these countries is lower than the average of the countries which have a minimum wage. The average unemployment rate in the EU member states that do not have an established minimum wage is set at 7.1%. The list of these countries with no legislation on a minimum wage consists of: Denmark; Germany (minimum wage to be introduced from 2015); the Czech Republic; Italy; Cyprus; Austria; Norway; Iceland; Sweden; Switzerland and Finland. There are, however, large disparities among these countries. For example, the unemployment rate in Cyprus is 15.1%, while Norway has an unemployment rate of only 3.7%, and Germany, with a population of over 80 million people has an unemployment rate of 5%. The average annual gross salaries in these countries are much higher than in those states with an established minimum wage. The average salary in Denmark exceeds 60,000 euros, while in Switzerland it is even higher and exceeds 70,000 euros per year. Finland with an average annual salary of 43,848 euros, and Germany with 43,300 euros, are two other good examples of the higher wages in these countries. The list of countries which do have an established minimum wage is made up

of: Belgium; Bulgaria; Estonia; Ireland; Greece; Spain; France; Latvia; Lithuania; Luxembourg; Hungary; Netherlands; Poland; Portugal; Romania; Slovenia; Slovakia and the United Kingdom. El Economista reported that the country with the highest minimum wage is Luxembourg, with 1,900 euros per month, while at the lower end stands Bulgaria with 173.84 euros per month. The minimum wage in Spain stands at 752.85 euros per month. The average unemployment rate in these countries exceeds 11%, which is four percentage points higher than the average rate for the countries with no minimum wage. Spain, with 24% and Greece with around 26%, head the list for unemployment, while the Netherlands, with an unemployment rate of 6.5%, and the UK with 6%, have achieved good results in this respect despite having an established minimum wage. The Institute’s bulletin also noted that, in the EU, the average hours worked per week in a principal job was 37.2 in 2013, while Spain exceeded this average, working 38.0 hours per week. The countries where the citizens worked fewest hours were the Netherlands (30.0 hours) and Denmark (33.6 hours per week), while the highest number of hours were worked in Greece, reaching 42.0 hours per week. A Tale of Two Villages by Christine Smith “Trees and foliage were being swept along, down in the raging torrent, and then suddenly, we saw a car being swept down the road, over where a wall had been demolished, and come to rest on its side, in the mud.” For all you expats and lovers of Spain I pose an interesting question: Is Spain a haven of “sun, sea and sangria” or is it overrun by “concrete, fish and chips and all day breakfasts?” To continue this line of thought, do you find the esplanades full of cheap shops selling tourist junk and blaring music “disgorging lager louts” from your local bars? I’m not just referring to Benidorm. And finally, are Spanish destinations a “carbon copy of UK seafronts, but with more guaranteed sunshine?” Christine Smith chose to live in the real Spain, uninhabited by tourists and like many of us, spent some time exploring possibilities and travelling around Spain. The result is an interesting diary/ travelogue containing some of the details she wanted to relay to you the reader. She was attracted to Spain because of the people and lifestyle. Her quest to find the perfect home focused on exploring traditional Spain somewhere “completely unspoilt, undeveloped, a non-tourist region that would give her the taste of Spain as it was before we invaded by the plane load.” Yes, you

will have realised that she is critical of the expats who attempt to make their dream become a version of Little Britain, a carbon copy of home but surely she has every right to voice her opinion? Viva la difference! The coastline attracted the tourists, the author though was “hungrier to explore” those places beyond the beaten track, places such as La Rioja, or Aragon even Don Quixote country, Castilla La Mancha perhaps? Interestingly enough, “A Place in the Sun” was showcasing the pretty village and beautiful scenery of Extremadura and environs. “I watched entranced.”Just like that. There were visions of a fertile area lying between the Gredos mountains, two provinces: Caceres which borders onto the west of Portugal and Badajoz, bordering onto Andalucia in the south. A priority was to be able to integrate with the local Spanish and their way of life without becoming too isolated. Extremadura is seen as the “poor man of Spain” like Almeria. It is isolated but not exploited by tourists so it seemed ideal-in theory anywhere! Success. Santiago Del Campo was the place where Christine found what she was looking for. Her daughter showed some interest in joining her as well as her son, Ben who rented a chalet

on the hills above Careres. The area represented peace/tranquility and beauty, with splashes of spring around the countryside which proved to be an absolute joy. Fields of blue hues. Small streams trickling through the rocks. What more could you ask for? My favourite, the swifts “swooping down skimming across the water.” Bats down by the river. Fantastic sunsets. This is Spain at its best, the Spain that we love. “Great streaks of red stretching across the sky as if it was on fire” as well as “hundreds of tiny insects dancing just above the water creating an illusion of rain falling.” La Vera nearby, is famous for pimento, smoked paprika. Also the Monfrague National Park is well worth a visit, home to many beautiful raptors: eagles and buzzards. As a contrast to the unspoiled, natural beauty, the inevitable concrete jungles have sprung up of Torremolinos and Fuengirola with the indolent glamour of Marbella and Puerto Banus providing a bit of a let-down apart from the interesting line up of Ferraris on show. Ben wanted to find somewhere a little more populated and was drawn to Almeria because it was undeveloped and the rent was cheap. Whilst renovation

was underway in Santiago Del Campo, Christine accompanied her son, exploring the region. Christine writes about the flash floods in Almeria late 2012. I was working down there at the time and remember them vividly. The Almanzora valley usually flooded every 40 years so it shouldn’t have been such a shock in 2012 but it was. “Few escaped the intrusive flood water, bringing its dirty sludge into their homes.” Olive groves were absolutely shattered and eight people were killed during those floods, three in the Almeria region. Useful tips on places to eat and drink, fiestas and flamencos to enjoy, it shows Spain at its most seductive. Readable and frank. Available on Kindle from Amazon.

Christmas Cake

Method

Combine all dried fruits into a large mixing bowl. Add brandy, rum and sherry. Mix well and leave to stand for at least 24 hours covered in a cloth. Stir the mixture every few hours. Mix together the zest, almonds, flour and all spices in a large bowl. In a separate, smaller bowl, cream the butter, sugar and treacle until its light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time – making sure you add a little flour with each to stop them curdling. Gently fold in the dried ingredients and mix well. Tip the creamy mixture into the fruit. You can mix this with a spoon, or get stuck in and do it with your hands. We find this is a better way to get everything evenly coated and ready to bake. Preheat your oven to 150°C (Gas mark 2) and prepare a 9-10 inch cake tin. Ensure that you double line the sides and

bottom of the tin separately. Pour the mixture into the lined tin. Because this cake doesn’t rise much, make sure you even the top and make a slight indent in the centre with your spoon. Top tip: if you can, place a circle of baking parchment over the top of the cake. This stops the top browning and drying out as it cooks. Bake for 3 hours and 45 minutes. When cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin on a rack overnight. Remove from the tin and take off the side parchment. Pierce the top of the cake all over with a skewer. Pour over 5 tablespoons of brandy or dark rum. Wrap in a double layer of parchment, followed by 2 layers of foil. Leave to age in a cool, dark place, in an airtight container. Feed the cake with 4 tablespoons of brandy or rum every month until ready to cover. Two weeks before serving, cover the cake in a coat of marzipan. A few days before, cover in royal icing and decorate. So why not try out this new, luxury Christmas cake recipe this year? It’s the perfect time to start baking, and we’d love to see your inventive decorations! Source: http://spoilyourself.info/

The Twilight Saga - Dawn

Having moved the kitchen furniture in order to get at the light fixing and its defective fluorescent tube we thought we might as well leave everything, including a total of four tubes, in situ until the light was fixed. Therefore our kitchen had a storm-tossed look – the table had been shunted sideways with its accompanying chairs huddled around it at all angles as if a malignant force of nature had flung them out of the way in some great meteorological tantrum. The Big Steps still occupied centre stage, and Tall Andy occupied the steps. ‘Let’s take the whole thing down, so that we can get at it.’ He advised. Andy, being properly qualified and therefore

not afraid of electricity, delved into the innards of the fitting and began to take it apart. ‘Did you buy it secondhad?’ He queried. ‘No. Why?’ ‘Have you had it repaired?’ Was his next question. ‘No. Why?’ ‘Because the fixings inside are all different from each other.’ ‘Oh.’ He straightened up to 6ft 5inches. ‘It would probably be cheaper to buy a whole new unit. I’ll go to another job and come back in half an hour.’ Time was of the essence and p r e v a r i c a t i o n unnecessary, so we shot smartly off to Suicide Corner, fully aware that this was where we bought this dodgy light in the first place. However, lightning never strikes twice, they say; it wouldn’t happen again. With the clock ticking we homed in on the fluorescent light section to find no 3 tube fittings; we settled for a 2 tube affair, paid an

‘Plane laser’ finds Roman gold mines in Spain

Airborne archaeologists using planemounted lasers have discovered a 2,000-year-old network of ancient gold mines in the Eria valley in northwestern Spain. The mining network is in León province, near the spectacular Las Médulas region, which is considered to be the largest opencast goldmine of the Roman Empire. It contains evidence that the Romans diverted rivers to supply the mines with water in the first century BC. The network of mines, had, however, remained hidden and overgrown for centuries. Researchers from the University of Salamanca made the discovery using a remote sensing technology known as LiDAR during an aerial survey. According to news site Science Daily, LiDAR works by illuminating targets with a laser beam to measure distance. University of Salamanca geologist

arm and half a leg for it, resolved next time we needed a light to go to the Chinese shop, and sped homewards with our pricey purchase. Our timing was perfect. We arrived as Andy returned. The light was transferred to his competent hands, he ascended the steps and installed it. Pete switched the switch. The light flickered into life – one bright white tube, and one dim and custard coloured tube! There was a pause as three minds swore in silent unison. Lightning had struck twice! Millions of years of evolution have given Mankind the ability to overcome most of the Universe’s problems, including faulty fluorescent tubes. Andy simply took the custard tube out and substituted it with one of the plethora of white tubes lying unused on the kitchen table. We now have a fully functioning kitchen light, and several spare tubes. If only we could remember which ones were the duff ones!

Stranger on the Shore

He, she, or perhaps even it appeared one fine Winter morning. Wrapped in a long black frock-coat to keep the early chills at bay the apparition stalked the byways of Alqueria. People watched through half open shutters as the spectral figure sauntered to and fro. It appeared to be looking for something or worse, at least to the culpable minds of Alquerians, someone. Whether the figure had powers of arrest or censure it was impossible to tell. From its easy movement and upright stance however an age of thirty to forty would have been appropriate. For whom had it come? For whom had the bell tolled? The younger folk examined their consciences and the older their diaries. Manuela’s first thought was that of a jilted lover. She tried to remember the suitors she had wronged but they were so numerous it would have taken a bookkeeper of some renown to recall all the petty details such as names etc. If the figure is female then it is perhaps a wife bent on revenge or it could still be a jilted lover of course. Manuela decided on discretion and took a supply of food, three bottles of Cava and the Village’s senior firefighter into the sanctuary of her roof-space. Rodriquez was quite beside himself, his enemies were more numerous than a politician’s evasions and he feared for his very life. Suppose the stranger was armed or worse, suppose he wanted money? Rodriquez disguised himself with false elbows and joined a band of

itinerant donkey-thratchers. Antonio Poyato had never paid a cent in customs duty or any other form of tax on his international Remitroot sales. Was this an evidence gathering operation on the part of some fiscal bureau? Officials had always turned a blind eye in exchange for some of the precious Remitroot liquid. Suppose the blind eye had suddenly regained sight. Poyato made a mental calculation of the customs duty he could possibly owe. He packed a suitcase and headed for Morocco. Blythe Gruntmore thought it might be his Spanish teacher from Newcastle. The last time he had seen him he was a gibbering wreck crouched in a corner cowering in the fetal position after listening to some gem of pronunciation from Blythe. The teacher had sworn revenge over Gruntmore’s systematic destruction of the poetic Spanish language. Blythe could contain himself no more and confronted the intruder. The stranger was Loco Paco’s brother, Daft Diego. He intended to pay a surprise visit on Paco but had unfortunately lost his address. He had resigned himself to a life of aimlessly wandering the streets of Alqueria.

News Dignitaries to Attend MACS shop opening in Huercal Overa Javier Fernández Lozano is co-author of a paper on the discovery, published in Journal of Archaeological Science. “Unlike traditional aerial photography, this airborne laser detection system allows the visualization of archaeological remains under vegetation cover or intensely ploughed areas,” he said. LiDAR was developed by NASA in the late 1960s to track retreating Arctic ice and ocean composition. It can be used in planes or drones. Fernández Lozano noted in the paper that the Roman mining study in the Eria valley is the first piece of ‘geoarchaeology’ performed with LiDAR in Spain. “Our intention is to continue working with this technique to learn more about mineral mining in the Roman Empire and clear up any mysteries such as why Rome abandoned such a precious resource as gold from one day to the next,” he wrote. Illegal overtime ‘costs Spain 273,000 jobs’

Spaniards are working over 10 million hours a week in illegal overtime a week, the equivalent of over 270,000 full-time jobs, says Spain’s opposition Socialist party who are now hoping to change the

situation. Spain’s unemployment rate is 23.7 percent and 5,427,000 people are out of work, according to the latest figures from the country’s national statistics office, the

INE. Despite that, Spaniards worked a staggering 10.2 million hours a week in illegal overtime in the third quarter of 2014, the figures show. With the full-time working week being 40 hours plus two optional hours of overtime, that’s the equivalent of 273,315 fulltime jobs. If you take the average working week of Spaniards, currently 35.8 hours, that figure is even higher at 286,284 jobs. Now Spain’s Socialists are hoping to change all that with a motion to be presented in Spain’s parliament on Thursday. Among the measures they’d like to see are a stop on extra hours being worked in exchange for time off until Spain’s unemployment rate drops below 15 percent. While the party don’t want to do away with overtime altogether— “A lot of people do them because they need to,” party sources told Spain’s el diario newsite — they do want to make sure those hours are paid, and the time-in-lieu system is very difficult to control. The Socialists also want working hours

specified in all employment contracts with contracts defaulting to full time if no hours are specified. Also on the agenda is a rollback of the Spanish government’s 2013 labour reforms which gave employers far greater freedom in how they will assign working hours. Under the new regime, part-time workers can end up working as much as 90 percent of a full-time contract and can be asked to work extra hours with as little as three days notice. Figures from the OECD show Spaniards work an average of 1,665 hours a year, or more than the Germans, the Dutch and the Swiss. According to figures from the European Commission, however, Germany has a productivity rate of over €42 ($54) per hour while Spain lags well behind with only €32 ($41). The Spanish organization Arhoe has long campaigned for a rationalization of Spanish working hours, fighting against the culture of ‘’presentismo’, or simply being in the office. Veterinarians see the Christmas joy turn tragic because of pets ingesting decorations. They are warning pet owners to decorate with their pets in mind so that those pets do not get sick. Shiny tinsel, garland and light strands are a serious danger, if pets chew and swallow the tinsel or wiring, it can cause digestive problems that require surgery and if the pet does not get treated right away, it could die. Some of your typical ornaments and decorations can get lodged into the intestines. The Styrofoam balls covered with glitter and paint are also toxic to animals as well as poinsettias. It is recommended using fake trees because the water in the tree stand is toxic and it’s very possible that your pets will get to it and drink it. If your pet experiences vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy, you should contact your veterinarian ASAP.

On the 22nd November, Urcal Golf Society members and guests played their latest game at Aguilon. Playing for the November cup in a Stableford format scores were very varied even though conditions were ideal for good scoring on the beautifully prepared course. Twenty four members and guests contested the competition with Tony Morgan coming back into some sort of form with a creditable 37points even though he failed to score on three holes. In second place came Derek Phillips playing his best golf for some time with 33 points and Dave Butler took third place with 30 points. There were two nearest the pin prizes on offer, these being won by Barry Kilby and Jean-Francois Crinquand. Longest Drive went to one of our

who also won the prize for the best lady of the day.

High handicap prize was won by Derek Phillips who came second in the main competition. Places achieved in each of the monthly singles competitions go towards the Order of Merit trophy at the end of the year, which looks to be a two horse race between Captain Steve Dodd and Tony Morgan, with one more qualifying event to go in December and only seven points between them, it should be an interesting final event. Anyone wishing to join our friendly society please telephone our Captain on 608238827 you will be made to feel most welcome.

Weight loss surgery State prosecutor to reduces diabetes risk sue Catalan president

Weight loss surgery can dramatically reduce the odds of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a major study. Doctors followed nearly 5,000 people as part of a trial to assess the health impact of the procedure. The results, published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal, showed an 80% reduction in type 2 diabetes in those having surgery. The UK NHS is considering offering the procedure to tens of thousands of people to prevent diabetes. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are closely tied - the bigger someone is, the greater the risk of the condition. The inability to control blood sugar levels can result in blindness, amputations and nerve damage. Around a tenth of NHS budgets are spent on managing the condition. The study followed 2,167 obese adults who had weight loss - known as bariatric - surgery. They were compared to 2,167 fellow obese people who continued as they were. There were 38 cases of diabetes after surgery compared with 177 in people left as they were - a reduction of nearly 80%. Around 3% of morbidly obese people develop type 2 each year, however, surgery reduced the figure to around 0.5%, which is the background figure for the whole population. Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese and carrying an excessive amount of body fat. This type of surgery is available on the NHS only to treat people with potentially lifethreatening obesity when other treatments have not worked. Around 8,000 people a year currently receive the treatment. The two most common types of weight loss surgery are: Gastric band, where a band is used to reduce the size of the stomach so a smaller amount of food is required to make someone feel full Gastric bypass, where the digestive system is re-routed past most of the stomach so

less food is digested to make someone feel full

the ballot was to be organized by volunteers and civil bodies.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence is considering a huge expansion of obesity surgery in the NHS in order to cut rates of type 2 diabetes.

The prosecutor has been under intense political pressure to finalize the suit since Catalonia’s November 9th vote.

Current guidance says surgery is a possible option for people with a BMI above 35 who have other health conditions. But new draft guidelines argue much thinner people should be considered on a case by case basis and those with a BMI of 35 should automatically considered for surgery. Diabetes UK says around 460,000 people will meet the criteria for an automatic assessment under the guidance. But the total jumps nearer to 850,000 when those with a BMI of 30 are also considered, it says. NICE anticipates figures in the tens of thousands. However, the surgery can cost between £3,000 and £15,000 and the move by NICE has raised concerns that the NHS will not be able to afford the treatment, even if there are savings in the longer term. Prof Martin Gullford, from King’s College London, told the BBC News website: “The key thing would be not only how effective is weight loss surgery but how safe is it in the long-term? “And we need to know about the cost effectiveness of weight loss surgery and how that balances against the costs of diabetes, it does raise some complex issues.”

Spain’s state prosecutor-general has been given the green-light to investigate top Catalan politicians including president Artur Mas over possible crimes committed during the region’s recent symbolic vote on independence. State Prosecutor-General Eduardo Torres-Dulce is now a step closer to finalizing a law suit against Catalan president Artur Mas, vice president Joana Ortega and regional education director Joana Ortega after winning the backing of almost all of his fellow prosecutors at a meeting on Wednesday.

“The public prosecutor’s office will take the appropriate legal actions in Simon O’Neill, the director of health the High Court of Justice of Catalonia,” intelligence at Diabetes UK, said: “This is the public prosecutor’s office said in a interesting research that reinforces what statement. we already know about weight loss being important for both preventing and managing type 2 diabetes.

Torres-Dulce had sought their backing of fellow state prosecutors for the suit “But it must be remembered that surgery after his Catalan counterpart decided carries risks and so bariatric surgery should not to push ahead with legal action, only be considered if serious attempts to arguing there were insufficient legal lose weight have been unsuccessful. grounds to do so. “Looking at the bigger picture, as a society we also need to focus more on stopping people becoming overweight, we need to look seriously at how we can make sure people are getting support to lose weight through access to the right services to encourage them to make healthy choices.” Source: www.bbc.co.uk

The final details of the suit have yet to be determined but Torres-Dulce has previously stated he wanted to investigate the Catalan politicians over possible crimes including misconduct, abuse of power, misappropriation of public funds and contempt of court. Torres-Dulce, believes Mas was personally involved in the organization of Catalonia’s vote and that it was backed by the Catalan government despite assurances from Mas that

The Catalan government says 2.3 million took part in the unsanctioned vote which Mas decided to hold following a legal block by the central government against his plans to hold an official, non-binding referendum on the issue that day. Of the 5.4 million voters aged over 16 who were authorized to vote, 1.86 million favoured independence, it said, although though no official census was carried out. Mas has hailed the ballot, which was organised by over 41,000 volunteers, as a “total success” but Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has dismissed it as a “deep failure” since “two out of three Catalans paid no attention”. Catalonia’s nationalist government has said it will now push for an official referendum similar to the one held in Scotland in September but Rajoy has already said he will not agree to this. Mas has said that if he fails to reach an agreement with Rajoy over a referendum, he could call early regional parliamentary elections that might serve as a plebiscite on independence. Demands for independence in Catalonia have grown over recent years despite Madrid’s resistance, fanned by the economic crisis. Catalans complain that their region does not receive investments in proportion to the taxes it pays and that the central government meddles in its linguistic and education policy.
