DANCING TONovember. THE ATOP group of Line Dance
Carrie Ann Green of Arboleas is well known locally as choreographer and leader of the “Dusty Boots” Exhibition Line Dance Group. Less well known is the fact that Carrie is also a talented writer of Line Dances and has had several of the dances that she has written, attain positions in the Line Dancer International Magazine’s famous (to Line Dancers) popularity charts. However this is all about to change, as one of the dances she has written has been selected for a possible award at the Annual Crystal Boots Awards, which are to be held at the Norbrek Castle Hotel in Blackpool later this month. The dance that she wrote, is to music by Rod Stewart and is called “So Proud”. When writing the dance she dedicated it to her mother and father Ann and Roger Green. On it’s release the dance soared up the a fore mentioned Line Dancer charts to a top ten position. The Crystal Boots Awards are held every year, and this will be the nineteenth year since their inception. They are promoted to encourage the introduction of new Line Dances and to further the boundaries of Line Dancing in general. Awards are split into various categories dependant upon dance difficulty and style. The category that Carries dance will be competing in will be in the “Improver” difficulty group of dances. Voting for the Awards started last
experts decide which dances will go into the various categories of the Awards, and then Line Dancers from around the world are asked to vote on their preferences in the various categories. The voting has now closed, but the final results will be a closely kept secret, until the night of the awards themselves on Saturday 31st January. This year is the first year in which a person from Spain has been selected for any of the “Crystal Boots” Awards, but on this occasion two people from Spain have been selected to possibly receive awards. The other person is Julie Lockton of Benidorm, who has had a dance called “My Guy” selected for the “ Absolute Beginners” group of dances. Richard B. Tolman

Local business goes platinum! Glenn and Jayne Unwin from Albox Insurance are delighted with the news that their award winning business has now been given the platinum status from the insurance company, Liberty Seguros. Glenn & Jayne have already been given an award last year for being the most successful agent in all of Almeria. Glenn says “this award is very exciting to achieve, the platinum award is not just good news for Albox insurance but also great news for clients, it means that amongst other benefits they can offer better discounts”. This is a great success story for Glenn and Jayne who are in their ninth year in business on calle Malaga 6 next door to the Sleep Centre. Singer preparing for space
British singer Sarah Brightman is expected to blast off in October for a 10-day stay on the International Space Station, NASA said on Thursday. The famed soprano, who starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” will pay about $52 million for a round-trip ride aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule, said U.S.-based Space Adventures, a privately owned firm that is arranging the trip. Brightman, 54, will become the eighth tourist and first professional singer to visit the orbital outpost, a $100 billion research laboratory that flies about 260 miles (418 km) above Earth. One tourist, Microsoft co-founder Charles Simonyi, made two trips. Since NASA retired its space shuttles in 2011, Russian Soyuz capsules have been fully booked flying crew to and from the station, a project of 15 nations. The last tourist to fly was Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, who spent 11 days aboard the station in 2009, at a cost of about $35 million. A Soyuz seat for a paying passenger is available this fall because Russia needs to supply a fresh capsule to bring home two station crewmen who are planning to make unprecedented year-long stays in space. Soyuz are designed to stay in orbit for six months. Cosmonaut and incoming station crewmember Sergey Volkov will pilot the replacement Soyuz that will carry European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen and Brightman, NASA flight director Emily Nelson said

Brightman arrived in Russia this week and was scheduled to begin a nine-month training program on Thursday, but it was postponed until next week so she could recover from a cold, Russia’s ITAR-TASS news service reported. A second aspiring space tourist, Japanese entrepreneur Satoshi Takamatsu, also arrived at Russia’s Star City training center to prepare for a spaceflight. TASS reported that he will serve as Brightman’s backup if she is unable to make the trip. Space Adventures could not be reached for comment about when Takamatsu, who would become the first Japanese tourist to visit the station, might fly. reuters.com

RIP Google Glass & other failed inventions
Google Glass is dead, at least in its current form. And so it enters a grand, tragic graveyard of well-meaning but badlyreceived inventions and technology — a place containing flying cars and bad games consoles. Many inventions promise to change the world, but some never get the chance. That might be because they’re bad — but it’s just as often that they come at the wrong time, or are a little confusing. Glass was probably the latter, and Google has said that it is likely to bring it back in some other form. Here are five of our favourite other inventions that were initially expected to change the world, but now mostly languish in obscurity. Smell-O-Vision Lots of failed inventions sound like they should work — adding smell to films is probably one of them. After colour and sound, smell probably seemed like the inevitable next step, just as after smartphones and smart watches putting technology in your glasses seemed obvious. But after making an appearance in the specially-made 1960 film Scent of Mystery, it never really caught on. The audience got distracted, it needed too much perfume and people found
it difficult to stop the scents mixing and becoming too much. As with Glass, people weren’t ready and the implementation wasn’t good enough to convince them. Smell-O-Vision has repeatedly attempted to mount a comeback, just as Google has suggested Glass might do. But they’ve mostly failed. Sinclair C5
Launched in 1985, the little Sinclair C5 electric bike was revealed with much talking of it being a revolutionary device and a sign of the future. But it was immediately mocked as a toy, and the people driving it thought stupid and dangerous. (Glass wearers got their own version of that mockery, getting called “glassholes”.) As such, it didn’t take off. But some have said that the car was ahead of its time, with one transport expert telling the BBC in July that: “The dangers of the C5 weren’t so much to do with its design as the roads and the attitudes
Oak Furniture
of the 1980s”.
Segway T h e S e g w a y has always struggled to be taken seriously — while it sells itself as the “leader in personal, g r e e n transportation”, it’s really more of a fun thing that you can drive around. Now it’s used mostly as a toy, and perhaps as a testament to keeping ambitions small. People are happy to try out gadgets for fun, less if they’re claiming to change your life. But given even in its statement announcing the closure of the Glass explorer programme Google continued to trumpet the technology’s use in the workplace, it looks like the glasses aren’t ready to stop asking to be taken seriously just yet. Nintendo Virtual Boy The Virtual Boy looked a bit like Google Glass, or the bigger Oculus Rift. It was an eyepiece that users could look into and play games with 3D graphics. Nintendo has admitted that the game was a “commercial failure” — but also said that it was an important one. Nintendo’s early experiments with 3D

helped make the portable and much more popular 3DS. The Virtual Boy stands to show that great things can come out of troubled ideas. That might be helpful consolation to Google Glass as it looks towards the future of the project. Mizar flying car Part of Google Glass’s appeal should have been that it looked like the future that science fiction promised us. So do flying cars — but the first attempts to do so went terribly. Advanced Vehicle Engineers made the Mizar by essentially attaching a Cessna plane to a Ford Pinto car. But the poor design plus bad construction meant that nobody wanted to get in it – though it did appear in The Man With The Golden Gun. The flying car shows that the future isn’t always an exciting place, and sometimes is a scary one. Wearables are undoubtedly the future — as Google said in its statement, since the project began “interest in wearables has exploded and today it’s one of the most exciting areas in technology” — but we might not be ready for them just yet. independent.co.uk

SOLTIMES JANUARY 2015
Recession Is Over - It’s 2015
That’s what the politicians said would happen 3 or 4 years ago. Yeah Right! However to be fair, we have noticed in the last few months a more positive atmosphere in the showroom and with our suppliers. We all seem to think things are on the upturn, all we need now is the media to stop all doom and gloom and let people start to live their lives normally again and stop all the fear factors and negative attitudes worrying where it is not needed and move forward. England is going mad with their on line shopping and January Sales spending money like no tomorrow and grabbing as many bargains as possible. Just because you are tempted with a good deal on furniture or any product is it a good buy? Say to yourself does it suit my home or the rest of the furniture that I have? Have you measured to see if it will fit? So often people buy things on the spur of the moment in a sale and live to regret it.
If you buy a dress, skirt or shoes etc in the sale and saved yourself money you think you have had a great buy, until you go to wear it and realize you have made a grave mistake. The trouble is you have told your husband what a great deal this number was to justify spending the money on something that you really did not need
at the time. I think we have all done it at sometime and landed up hiding it at the back wardrobe hoping to lose weight or a more suitable occasion to wear it or even better your husband will forget this grand
buy until you can send it to the charity shop or pass it on to a friend saying don’t you dare wear it when my husband is about. Now with furniture this is where the problem gets bigger. We all know a lady’s wardrobe is like the Doctor’s Tardis but there is no way you can hide a sofa, chair, bed or table in the back of the wardrobe and expect your husband not to notice. So enjoy your January Sales find your bargains but measure before you hit the
shops and really think about what you need before going, so you will not make the mistake of buying the wrong thing. If you are buying a new mattress measure the length and the width as not all bed frames here are the same as England’s standard sizes. If you are buying a new suite again measure length, area you have and depth. You may find that 2 x 2 Seater Sofas may suit you better than the usual 3 + 2 seater sofas. You may think I have said before about measuring but it is so important, it is a very basic thing to do as furniture in the showroom never looks as big until it arrives in your casa, then looks huge. It’s basic like you would not start to paint until you have covered up your furniture or floor and bought the paint. When buying your new sofas or mattresses please try before you buy to make sure you have the correct comfort that suits your body. Hope you find some lovely deals that suit your home, fits and matches the rest of your furniture and you enjoy the experience of having something new for your home. I wish you all a Very Happy New Year filled with laughter and good health. Home & Garden Keeping the Drafts Out
6. Lay Down Door Snakes and Area Rugs
Cover your floors with extra area rugs and runners. Lay door snakes in front of drafty doors. By laying down extra rugs and door snakes you can better insulate your floors and keep the warm air where it belongs. 7. Close Off Unused Rooms Close the doors to the rooms that you do not use a great deal. By keeping these doors closed, you will reduce the drafts caused by the movement of any cool air from one room to the next. Read more: http://www.doityourself.com
While older homes offer a great deal of charm and character, they can also be filled with cracks and crannies that cause uncomfortable drafts. If you want to be able to enjoy a cozy winter inside your home, you’ll have to ensure that the heat stays inside with you. By draft-proofing your house, you’ll be more comfortable and save a bundle on energy costs. 1. Locate Your Drafts You can find the drafty areas in your home through the use of a lit candle. Light your candle and hold it near your doors and windows. If you see the flame or smoke move, you know you have a draft that needs to be sealed. Be careful holding the candle and keep the flame away from any flammable material near the windows and doors.
bottom casing and press it onto the tape there. Pull the plastic out to the casing sides and press it onto the tape. Turn your hairdryer to a low setting and blow the warm air over the plastic to shrink it into place. Use your scissors to remove any excess plastic from around the window. 4. Fill Cracks and Crevices Use your caulking to fill cracks and crevices. Position your filler into your caulking gun. Squeeze the caulking in an even amount between each window or door frame and the wall. Hold the gun at a 45 degree angle and apply a continuous line of the material, completely filling all of the cracks. If necessary, caulk around electrical outlets, light switches and baseboards. 5. Close Your Curtains
2. Seal Your Window and Door Frames Apply weatherstripping to your drafty window and door frames. Use a tape measure to determine the perimeter around your windows. Purchase enough weatherstripping to seal the area. Clean the surfaces and allow them to dry thoroughly. Use your scissors to cut the length of weatherstripping you need. Apply the weatherstripping by pulling off the adhesive backing and pressing the tape into place. 3. Cover Your Windows with Plastic Use your tape measure to determine the area of window space to cover with plastic, and then add an inch to the dimensions to ensure that you have enough film. Cut the plastic to the dimensions you need. Apply the double- sided tape to the casing around the window. Remove the paper from the top of the tape. Carefully press the plastic onto the casing at the top of the window, ensuring that it is properly secured. Pull the plastic down to the
Keep your curtains and blinds closed to keep the warm air inside your home. Open the coverings during the day to allow the sunshine to heat up the air in your rooms. Close the coverings at night to trap the air in your home and prevent it from escaping.

albox
Facilities Albox is a traditional white-washed Spanish market town with a population of around 11,000 inhabitants, of which a small percentage are foreign ex-pat residents. The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. You will find most locals frequenting the pool during the weekends and summer holidays. It opens throughout July and August. There is also a sports centre and tennis club, which also has its own swimming pool. The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. The origens of Albox date back to Medieval times when the ancient fort town was located on a hill nearby to its current location. In 1503 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake and most of its historical buildings were lost. The town was reconstructed from scratch in its current location. The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. Market Town A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) can be found hanging from stalls and shop windows; dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage) and many more delicacies are on show. The market is extensive, with street upon street, a myriad of noise, colour and smells. In fact you can find just about anything in the Albox market. Source www.spain-holiday.com

Why come to Roquetas de Mar
A Roquetas de Mar holiday promises dawn to dusk summer sun and warm Mediterranean seas combined with an authentic Spanish atmosphere. The evenings offer varied bars and restaurants. However, if you’re looking for binge drinking then I’m afraid it’s not for you. As Roquetas does not attract the sheer number of tourists seen in some of the other resorts, there is plenty of room to lounge around and sunbathe, or to take a leisurely swim, without the problems of overcrowing seen in many Spanish beach resorts. Roquetas de Mar lies to the south of the town of Almeria in the direction of Malaga. It is around half an hour’s drive from the airport of Almeria. Set on flat terrain, fairly good paving and low-rise apartments make Roquetas de Mar ideal for families with younger children, and mature holidaymakers. The town has used traditional Spanish architecture as its blueprint, creating an artificial, yet quaint village atmosphere. Unlike Mojacar, the old village of Roquetas hasn’t quite embraced tourism and remains pretty much in a world of its own. There are villas scattered along the sea front, alongside some of the hotels and bars. A pedestrian promenade offers pleasant strolls.

The beach is a mix of sand and pebble with rows of sunbeds and parasols - such a large expanse it rarely appears crowded. Watersports are available in the summer months ifconditions favour them. In the summer months it’s wise to avoid the beach in the afternoons; the sun is extremely strong here - have a late, long, leisurely lunch instead.

FOODS THAT MAKE YOU LOOK OLDER
There’s a reason why your skin feels a little off after a series of holiday parties, BBQs, or mojitofilled beach days: What you eat affects your skin— for better or worse. While a few indulgences won’t age you overnight, a continuously poor diet can accelerate the aging process of your skin (and teeth) over time. Here, 7 foods to consume in moderation in order to look as young as you feel.
Alcohol
A healthy liver means healthy skin. “When your liver is functioning well, toxins that could potentially affect the skin are expelled naturally through your body. But if toxins build up in your liver, and aren’t broken down properly, your skin can develop a variety of issues, like acne, sallowness, and wrinkles. Drinking can also trigger rosacea outbreaks. Alcohol is dehydrating and bad for your sleep, inadequate sleep is linked to wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and reduced skin elasticity.
red meats have been linked to heart disease.) Try swapping the deli meat on your sandwich for chicken or turkey. If you can’t say goodbye for good, use less meat, and load up on veggies.
SPICY FOOD
Spicy food aggravates rosacea-prone skin, but it can also do damage during menopause. It’s believed that the blood vessels in the skin are more reactive then. Since spicy food dilates your blood vessels, menopausal women may find their skin looking blotchy and less youthful during this time. Don’t worry about indulging in the occasional spicy curry, but regular flare-ups could lead to spider veins, puffiness, and/or permanent redness. Order your food mild when possible. WHITE WINE
White wine falls into its own category because of its surprising dental damage. While a glass of red will give you instant “wine mouth,” the acid in white wine damages your enamel and makes your teeth more prone to longer-lasting stains. So if you always end your day with a glass of chardonnay, your teeth may be more vulnerable to those coffee stains the next morning.

SALTY FOODS
(off the Bouganvillia roundabout)
You might not cook with salt, but that doesn’t guarantee your intake is low. “Many canned foods are preserved with sodium, which can make you retain water and cause a ‘puffy’ look,” says Ranella Hirsch, MD, former president of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology & Aesthetic Surgery, and dermatologist practicing in Massachusetts.
PROCESSED MEATS
Think Deli meat, sausage, and bacon. Many of these meats have sulfites and other preservatives, which can trigger inflammation in the skin, and accelerate the appearance of aging. They also tend to be high in salt, which can make you look puffy. (Not to mention, processed

SOLTIMES JANUARY 2015
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today we are going to walk the stony path that is the future. The ‘What if’s’ and ‘Mayby’s’ of technology. Why stony path? For most of us old enough to remember ‘Tomorrow’s World’ we will also recall, sometimes with amused fondness the times when things went wrong. There-in lay the paradox that is predicting the future. When phones started to become ‘smart’ they also started the blur the lines between a computer and communications device! I, grudgingly, gave the ‘last rights’ to my beloved ‘motorola’ phone and took the plunge into the murky world of the smart phone. Mine wasn’t expensive but, even as I type this, I still haven’t found out everything that it is capable of! Yes, I have had a tablet that, blow-up on me, had the all singing Android system, Apps and dodads, so you might expect me to have tested an Android device to destruction. Well, yes I did, as has already been said. But as with all things computers, someone, somewhere, has / is writing the next latest and greatest app thingy that everyone must have. I can safely say that my phone (and every smart phone out there) does everything apart from make a decent cup of coffee! Every once in a while I like to stray off the safe and secure path that is offering advice about what program or computer to buy or not buy! So today, as suggested earlier, here is where the future / stony path bit starts. I introduced the story of my misadventures regarding android as a way of leading you to the idea that everything is getting smaller. Well, that isn’t actually true. Have you seen the size of some of these phones out there, nearly the same size as a small tablet! The product that is of interest today is a bracelet. Yep, you heard me right, I did say a bracelet. First and foremost it isn’t yet available! The designers are 84% short of the estimated funds needed
to complete the project which means they are 588,000€ short. The sales pitch is really good. The technology is already available in different forms and the product might even, in time, replace the wristwatch. Lets give it a name, something that you can look up on the internet, after all that is where I found the story! The product is called “Cicret” and can be found at “www. cicret.com”. They also have a YouTube page that lets you watch a working prototype (or some really good animation). Inside the bracelet are the components of a tablet or mobile phone. Except! There is no screen and there is also no keyboard! These have been replaced with your arm and sensing technology that will allow you to interact with your computer and screen without having a keyboard! The screen is a pico (really tiny) projector that projects the image of a desktop, similar to what you will see on a smart phone or tablet, directly onto your skin and the position detection technology can determine where your hand is in the 3 dimensions of space. It is able to tell what key you are typing or an icon that you wish to move just from these sensors. What will it retail at – no-one to date has a clue. When will it become available – I honestly couldn’t say. Will it be worth the money – probably not until several million have been sold and the price drops accordingly. You know that I’m at Jack’s bar in Albox every Friday afternoon to solve all your computer problems, but did you know that I only live in Partaloa – just 10 minutes from Jack’s and have an open surgery every day just like you favourite computer shop – just longer hours and quicker service!

El Refugio - Almeria City Almeria City isn’t just an airport; though most just land and scuttle off to their homes or holiday destinations without wondering about what else is on offer. The City has a beautiful old quarter with excellent restaurants, tapas bars, art galleries and museums. Stunning architecture abounds, topped by the Moorish Alcazaba towering above the city. The Paseo de Almeria is a broad tree lined boulevard; running from the port to Plaza Purchena; it’s filled with chain stores and boutiques. It’s the commercial hub of the city with some curious black news stand kiosks dotted along the way. Another world however lies hidden the surface and the kiosks have trap doors leading 3metres and deeper below ground. At Plaza Purchena for the grand sum of 2€ the intrepid can learn more. The entrance to El Refugio is a modern glass building with a suspended glass floor so the foundations of ancient Moorish walls can be seen. Here the story unfolds firstly via a short film,

Spain will have created around 1 million jobs in two years by the end of 2015, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said in an interview published on Sunday, more than initially predicted by the government, which is banking on a growing economic recovery. Efforts to combat Spain’s sky high unemployment rate - at 23.7 percent, the second-highest in Europe after Greece - will be a cornerstone of political campaigning this year as a general election approaches. The Spanish government had originally forecast about 800,000 more people would find work in 2014 and 2015. Rajoy maintained the economy would grow by 2 percent this year, as previously predicted, but said there would be 550,000 to 600,000 more people in work and paying in to social security in 2015. Official data from December showed there were 417,574 more workers paying into the social security system than a year earlier. “Therefore ... that’s close to a million more (people paying into the social security system) in these two years,” Rajoy said in an interview with news agency Efe, published by Spanish
media on Sunday. Spaniards are due to vote in a new government by year-end. Rajoy’s centre-right People’s Party (PP) had said it would end its term with an unemployment rate below 23 percent, the level it stood at when it came to power in late 2011. But this rate soared to as much as 27 percent in an ensuing financial crisis and another year and a half of recession, and even now is only dropping slowly. Although Spain has become one of the euro zone’s fastestgrowing economies this year, high unemployment has remained a major drag on the turnaround and has meant millions of families are yet to feel any relief. There were 4.45 million people registered as out of work in December, according to data from the Labour Ministry, although a survey from the National Statistics Institute INE put the number of jobless at 5.4 million for the third quarter of 2014. The latest INE job survey for the fourth quarter is due on Jan. 22. reuters.com
Less inheritance tax for non resident heirs starting 2015: Inheritance tax discrimination of non residents finally ended this Christmas: On the 3rd of September of 2014 the European Court of Justice sentenced Spain to pay a specific person back some of their inheritance tax on the basis that if they had been a resident in Spain they would have been allowed higher exemption rates. (In Spain each autonomous region has created extra exemptions for their residents, and as non residents can not take advantage of this they are discriminated (more or less depending on which autonomous region we compare their situation with.). Unfortunately the sentence itself did not change the SPANISH legislation and did not provide a system establishing who could claim money back or any way of non residents not having to pay their inheritance tax as usual. All it did was recommend that Spain adapt it’s legislation. In other words after the sentence of 3rd of September of 2014 non residents still had to pay as usual with the only difference that if they took the Spanish government to court after a few years they may obtain a similar sentence by the ECJ.
We wrote about this when the sentence was dictated and you can find it on www.daviessolicitors.com (on the blog) Spain in this case has acted quickly and has adapted it´s legislation. We have just got back from the Christmas Holiday to find a new norm signed during the holiday that creates new forms for non resident heirs that allow them to apply the deductions that they would have been entitled to if they had been a resident of the autonomous region of Spain with higher exemptions (1. as long as they consider that a. they are indeed being discriminated which is not always the case and 2. and that they invoke the autonomous region with the largest connection (mainly where the assets are situated which is easy when their is only one or they are all in the sam autonomous region). For further information about this and who is actually affected by the situation, please read our previous article which we printed back back in September of 2014 when the sentence was issued by the ECJ. We have copied that article on our blog which you can find by visiting our website. www.daviessolicitors.com

Looking to sell? We can sell your property for you. Properties needed in all areas
Moving into and setting up your new home is definitely one of the most exciting things – especially for those who never find enough outlets for their ideas and designs. Throughout history, people have gone from caves to huts to castles to blocks of flats – and nowadays, seems like you can find an example of just anything. Some people are forced to get creative because of some physical restrictions – like small or unusual space – while others do so just because. 1 Inspired by our ancient predecessors, who inhabited trees, this completely transparent “House NA” in Japan offers you a lot of day light, but not much privacy. 2 The Skateboard House allows you to skate on all the surfaces, both in and outdoors, and was planned to be built in Malibu 3 The worlds slimmest house in Poland. The Keret House, inserted between two existing buildings, measures only from 92 to 152 centimeters in width! 4 Stone house Portugal Although it looks like a massive rock, this house in Portugal actually has a door, a chimney and a window, and has become a huge tourist attraction 5 Giant Seashell house Mexico. Inspired by the work of Gaudi and Frank Lloyd Wright, a young family with two kids in Mexico City had a seashell-shaped house built for them. 6 This single storey house in Malibu was inspired by the Flintstones family from the classic 60’s cartoon. Television legend Dick Clark have listed it for $3.5 million Source www.boredpanda.com

Caterpillars
(Processional Pine Caterpillars)
Pine Caterpillars (Latin name thaumetopoea pityocampa) are probably one of the most unpleasant creatures you will find in Spain, certainly in areas where pine trees grow in abundance. They are found throughout the warmer regions of Southern Europe, the Near East and North Africa. As well as causing much damage to pine forests, they are a major danger to animals and, to a lesser degree, human beings. Do not touch them. Warn your children that they are not like the friendly English caterpillars. The very fine hairs on these creatures are poisonous and most dangerous. They can be seen living in silk cocoon style nests hanging in the pine trees to which they are most harmful, stripping them of their pine needles. When hungry, they leave their cocoon to seek another uninfested tree on which to feed. They travel nose to tail in a line, hence the name Processional. They are most noticeable from January to mid April and are at their most dangerous in mid/late February. The caterpillars are often seen in the evenings, walking in procession from tree to tree. If they drop onto you or your pet, don’t brush them off with your hands because the effect is most unpleasant, causing great irritation, rash and pain. Dogs, cats and people can suffer from shock. The hairs of the caterpillars are still virulent even when the creatures are dead. Do not hit them with sticks because hairs flying in the air are just as dangerous. Burn them, but be careful of floating hairs. If the caterpillars are in the tree cocoon state, first spray the nest with hair spray (to seal down the hairs), cover the cocoon and the affected part of the branch with a plastic bag, cut down the branch, place it on clear ground and burn it. If the caterpillars are on the ground marching, it is better first to spray them with lighter fuel and then set them alight. This reduces the risk of flying hairs. Take care to only do this where you cannot inadvertently start a forest fire because during the summer months the undergrowth and trees are very dry. If you live near pine trees, it is recommended that you keep Anti Histamine tablets handy as an early treatment. In particular, avoid ingesting the hairs. Dogs are most at risk by sniffing the ground where the caterpillars have marched. Take particular care with your eyes. If affected the result is serious, causing pain and swelling similar to a bad case of conjunctivitis. Treatment: If a person or animal shows signs of shock, get them to a doctor, hospital or vet immediately. If you have children and are considering buying property, take the above details into consideration. Golfing. When these caterpillars march across golf courses, play ceases immediately because it is too hazardous to try to clear them away. Sourced by www.practicalspain.com

¡Buenos Días Alqueria!
Radio Alqueria is once more preparing to assault the airwaves. Jammed and forced to close down by an electronic countermeasures unit of the Spanish army two years ago, the station is now servicing its generator and polishing its lecher lines in readiness for its return. The station is to field a host of well known names including Pulsating Pedro the controversial DJ from Ollantaytambo, Peru. He is known for his rapid repartee and his ability to geld lamas with his teeth. Unfortunately after years of exposure to the beasts he has, by some strange mechanism acquired their aroma. He is universally avoided in the hot confines of the studio where he has been known to steam. Banned from the station is El Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido, the Village priest. As an Existentialist his ministrations have the potential to cause mass depression on a scale greater than a wet Sunday in Bolton. To avoid any chance of lemming like behaviour the most cheerful person in Alqueria was given the task of presenting ‘Thought for Today’, unfortunately this is Loco Paco. The signing of Miguel Pez the well known meteorologist was a particular triumph for the Radio Station. However funding only ran to one analysis. So the same weather report is broadcast three times a day, seven days a week, Winter and Summer. No one seems to mind however. It does beg the question though, does anyone actually listen to Radio Alqueria? The first day of broadcasting started with a children’s programme. Everyone knew it was a children’s programme from the mass hysteria and screams. Some badly prepared, patronising fairy tale was dished up to the poor little souls. A survey later showed that the only person listening was Amalia Vega. She thought it was real and
reported the existence of a man eating, or rather little girl in red eating Eurasian Wolf to the Guardia Civil. Today in Parliament was a masterpiece and consisted of a badly recorded episode of the Goon Show. Most listeners thought Alquerian politics were coming along in leaps and bounds. Some even commented that they were now on a par with Westminster. Sport was dominated by Rodriquez and his Abyssinian Goat Shirling. This received many complaints as the process of ‘shirling’ was misinterpreted by many and led to Rodriquez having to sign a sex offenders register. The highlight of the day’s broadcasting was undoubtedly ‘Manuela On Toast’. It wasn’t as the womenfolk, producers and censors thought a culinary programme. It was thirty minutes of Manuela at her most bawdy and inventive. Many are waiting for the screen play while other hopefuls are emanding audience participation. The first day of transmission finished with Loco Paco’s ‘Thought for Today’, it as deeply disturbing!
Multiple Murders At Sea Two Men Charged
– Martin Shortland A combination of superstitions, physical violence and Voodoo imprisons the victims of human trafficking in sub-Saharan Africa. Small fortunes are charged to take people to the so called ‘promised land’ of mainland Europe. The stretch of coastline between Adra and Almeria is the most popular entry point and not many weeks go by when the evidence of another failed attempt is either washed up on the shoreline, or pulled from the sea. It’s not known how many people are successful in their attempts, the figure can only be guessed at, but the coast guard and police do know how many illegal immigrants are detained each year: last year the figure was almost 4,000. A further 380 bodies were either removed from the sea or from beaches in the bay of Almeria. The Sea of Alboran is probably the most widely used in the whole of the Mediterranean and the security services are on constant patrol to try and stem the tide of
The Domino Effect
this human cargo. The networks of criminal gangs who smuggle this sorry cargo of bewildered, hungry and frightened people into southern Spain are ruthless in what they do. The money is paid to them in the villages of the sub-Sahara, where poverty and sickness is rife. The journey to the Moroccan coast is long and arduous but nothing in comparison to the treacherous sea crossing most will suffer in their bid for a better life. As I’ve said, many don’t make it as the boats they travel in are often woefully inadequate for the 70 mile journey. Those that do survive are often apprehended soon after they land, but for many others the story is a less attractive one, especially for the young women. They are often targeted for use in the sex trade and spend years in virtual captivity in the miserable rooms of the brothels hidden amongst the vast ocean of greenhouses between Almeria and El Ejido. One such vessel was intercepted by the Guardia Civil in December,
The plan was to sit in the sunshine and enjoy a late breakfast of toast and marmalade with a cup of tea on the front porch. I had all the wherewithalls assembled; kettle filled and on, toaster filled and on, plates ready with appropriate cutlery, cups and marmalade pot to hand and the butter, sitting on one of my posher plates, was warming itself to spreading temperature. All was neatly assembled and ready to hand on the worktop in the ordered way that would have impressed any TV cookery pundit. I had command of the situation; the component parts of the breakfast would reach readiness with splitsecond timing to arrive on the porch perfectly prepared and piping hot. That was until the sugar initiated the Domino Effect. I needed to replenish the sugar jar so I reached in to the cupboard above the worktop and grabbed the sugar bag. It, however, had other ideas, and elongated itself in my grasp, going from short and squat to long and thin, thereby catching the top of the coffee jar. The coffee jar tipped forward, catching the teabag jar, and together they tumbled gracefully onto the butter plate, which bounced into the sugar jar before all four of them careened with balletic elegance on to the floor, where they shattered into a starburst of glass and breakfast ingredients. I observed the scene, and considered my options. I had enough coffee, sugar and butter to make a decent serving of buttercream with added teabags, but it would also contain a significant amount of broken glass, plus the kitchen floor is not really an
18 miles off the coast of Almeria, there were 29 Africans on board. When police began interviewing the detainees, they soon discovered that 50 people had originally been on board the vessel and that 21including 8 infants - had been lost at sea owing, apparently, to the bad weather. Further investigation uncovered a more sinister reason for the loss of life. Two Cameroonian youths who were amongst the survivors have now been arrested and charged with the murder of up to 15 people. Police say that there was indeed some bad weather and that a combination of fear, fatigue, despair and superstition culminated in a number of fights breaking out. A Nigerian ‘holy man’ started to pray for a change in the weather, but it continued to get worse and the two youths

At this moment The Dog That Is Not Ours trotted in, attracted by the sounds of droppage and the possibility of Food On The Floor. ‘Out!’ I hollered, already imagining her paws cut to shreds by the broken glass. ‘But’ she said, then realised that I meant it, and outed. As there was no point crying over spilt breakfast I called the marital state of the sugar’s parents into question and set to thoroughly cleaning up, though I know that I will be finding tiny shards of broken glass in most unexpected places for at least the next 6 months! Looking on the bright side; the toast didn’t burn, due to my reflex toaster-switching-off reaction, and the marmalade wasn’t involved in the fracas. Also I have learnt never to put the butter on a posh plate! We did eventually get our breakfast on the porch, after which I went to the Chinese to buy replacement plates and jars.
accused him of using evil chants and Voodoo. They beat him and threw him overboard along with a number of his Nigerian companions who tried to help. Over the next few days, other people were assaulted and robbed before being thrown overboard, including a number of mothers with children. The investigation is a complex one in which the truth of what really happened will probably never be known. The remaining survivors, from Nigeria, Cameroon and Guinea are being held in internment hostels awaiting repatriation, a process which could take some considerable time because of the complexities of international immigration laws.

Mojácar Town Hall has taken on board the criticism that they do not keep their non Spanish residents fully informed about what is going on in the town. So with this in mind, the all new ‘What’s Going On in Mojácar’ newsletter is about to be launched, full of up to date information and, all in English! The Mojácar Newsletter will be available by email, which will please some of those older residents who have said that they feel excluded as they do not use social networks, although it will also be available on Facebook “Mojácar Informa” as well the internet at www.mojacar.es. Alternatively, you will be able to collect a paper copy from any Mojácar Tourist Office. The newsletter will be fortnightly, with extra bulletins for events that have been arranged at short notice or, cancelled, which has been another bone of contention, hopefully to be resolved. The Mayor, Sra Rosa María Cano said “I hope that a regular Mojácar Newsletter in English will give residents the information that they have been missing, about what has happened in the town as well as advance information so everyone can
participate and know more about what is, their town. Also, we hope to emphasise the help that is available to some of our older residents, who may not know of the grants, discounts and social care that can be applied for. I would ask particularly that social groups join our mailing list so that we can see if there any areas in which the Town Hall, The Diputación or the Junta de Andalucía can work with you as there are many grants and funds available, whether they be involved in Care & Support, Health & Fitness or Culture. We really hope that this newsletter will evolve over time into a much needed success and that everyone will make an input with ideas because, after all, it is the residents ‘What’s On’. “ So, if you want to receive regular information about Mojácar, participate more and find out what is on offer, please email info@mojacar.es to be added to the mailing list.

Film Review The Two Faces of January Director: Hossein Amini
“Truth is we’re joined at the this tragic story. hips. I get caught, I take you Chester Macfarland is played by Viggo down. You get caught, you Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame. turn me in.” Remember Aragorn with the long hair? If you’re a fan of Hitchcock or Patricia Highsmith and love psychological thrillers, this film is for you. I’m sure you’re familiar with the Ripley books by Highsmith so you’ll find similar underlying themes with fraudsters, murders and of course, men on the run! For well-known screenwriter Hossein Amini, this was to prove a successful directorial debut joining the prolific ranks of Clement, Hitchcock and Minghella, reminding us of the thrill and tension, on the edge of your seat tension that is characteristic of this genre. Where Amini excels is in conveying subtle and unspoken tension particularly with the Alpha males sparring over Colette. The coldhearted stares and the grimaces will give you the creeps followed by the profanities and the scuffles. The title of the film alludes to the two faces of Janus, the Roman God, one face looking to the future, the other to the past. We are told about the mythical tale of Theseus and the minotaur from the two main characters who seem to be on a sight-seeing tour of the Acropolis in Athens, laying early foundations of a tragedy in the making. The third character is a tourist guide and he relishes the opportunity to tell some besotted female tourists about
knocking back the whisky he becomes a dangerous man. Colette assures Chester that her interest in Rydal is non-sexual, however no-one believes Mortensen has been described by her! Once you feel the chemistry between the two you’ll critic Odie Henderson as “dangerously sexy and morally dubious.” He is a 42 year old wealthy American financier who seems to have recently wedded wife number 2-another glamorous and beautiful blonde, 25 but relatively poor, played by Kirsten Dunst. (Interview with the Vampire, Spiderman 1 and 2.) Chester reads from a tourist guide, the mood seems happy and the couple are relaxed as they stroll around the Acropolis as if they didn’t have a care in the world. But looks can be deceptive, can’t they? Rydal Keener, a Greek speaking American, who majored in Economics from Yale played by hunky Oscar Isaac ( Guerilla, the t.v. series Law and Order and Body of Lies) is a tourist guide and a poet. He is interested in Chester because he reminds him of his late father although he is more interested in Colette as a sexual playmate. understand Rydal flirts with the young female what I mean. tourists, in particular Lauren van Buren Things come to a head when a who is meant to be related to the 8th President and then takes advantage of private detective finally catches up them by scamming them, something with Chester. “I thought you said no-one would that Chester seems aware of. Colette tells her husband that she follow us?” asks Colette, alarmed when likes Rydal and there are hints of her a strange man storms into their hotel promiscuity further afield. Chester is room whilst indulging in some horseinsanely jealous and once he starts play. We learn that Chester has been
pause for thought
As I write this we’re all still reeling from the terrible events in France, where a handful of extremists have caused such mayhem and wrought fear in the hearts of so many. For in our ‘free’ society, where travel is so easy and intrusive checks so minimal, who knows but what a similar cell may be hidden within our own community, already planning and preparing for action. And all, apparently in the name of God. How can anyone be so misguided? Using out of context extracts from the Qu’ran, a book filled with praise for a merciful and forgiving God, to support their evil and inhuman actions. Yet of course we Christians can’t afford to be complacent when we think of all the equally evil and inhuman actions that have, down the centuries been taken in the name of Christ, much even within our own lifetime in places like Bosnia and Northern Ireland! And this is the same Jesus who urged his followers to “love your enemies”, to “pray for those who treat you spitefully”, to “turn
the other cheek” and to “leave revenge to God alone”. How can anyone interpret such clear teaching as instructions to maim or kill? And how, in the light of Christ’s “My new commandment is that you must love each other” dare any of us feel hatred for another? For it is not God, but power-hungry people, steeped in pride, arrogance and self will, who deliberately mislead others into believing their evil acts are somehow on God’s behalf. They know and understand nothing of the loving, merciful and forgiving God who gave all to reach out to folk who’ve rejected him! But I wonder; are we any better? Do we really appreciate the statement made by St Paul, that “God demonstrates his love towards us in that whilst we were still opposing him, Christ died on our behalf, paying the penalty we deserve in full.” And dare we really claim to love our enemies – even the terrorists? That really takes some doing. mixed up with Canadian oil shares. “He sold them shares in an oil field that didn’t exist. Them and hundreds of other people.” So, pay-back time it is! “You reimburse my clients, I’ll go back home to my family and leave your lovely wife and you alone.” Fair enough. This is when we start to realise the truth about Chester MacFarland and why he is on the run and unable to return to the States with his young wife. Chester wants to cut a deal before a scuffle breaks out-the first of many. Rydal makes an appearance at an inopportune moment and unwittingly become an accomplice to a crime, jeopardising what is left of his shaky integrity and compromising his position completely. In Chester’s own words he refers to him as a “right criminal.” From then onwards we know that things can only get worse. Avoiding arrest is the name of the game. The backdrop of Athens, Crete and Istanbul, Turkey add to the charm of this thriller, a good script and firstclass acting. Does anyone survive or do they all go down? Find out.

A fairy tale turned into reality for two dogs this Christmas at ‘SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR’. On St Nicholas day, December 6th, one of the volunteers received an urgent phone call at the shelter. When the conversation was over, he turned flabbergasted to the rest of the volunteers and said “You are not going to believe it, but the owner of the only private castle in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata wants two of our dogs as companions and guardians of his castle”. A quick survey of candidates was made and the choice fell on PEDRO (you remember he was one of the dogs rescued from drowning in a water reservoir) and ARNOLD. It was too late to do very much grooming, but the two dogs were taken for a quick walk to present them as relaxed and handsome as possible. A Land Rover soon arrived at the front gate and two gentlemen stepped out. This was the big opportunity for PEDRO and ARNOLD. Dozens of fingers were crossed, but no worry, the dogs made a good impression and they were swept off to their fairy tale castle. Any fears of waking from a dream were dispelled when the first pictures arrived of the dogs inspecting their domain and being caressed by their new master. Now we just wish for a fairy tale ending with the dogs living happily ever after. A castle is an exceptional home for a dog but any dog needs to be a Cinderella and find their loving forever home. There are 400 dogs of all shapes and sizes waiting for their chance of happiness. If you want to contact the shelter you can do so via Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com

Massimo Cellino’s long-term future as Leeds owner has been cast into doubt after the Italian businessman lost his appeal against disqualification by the Football League. Cellino was uncertain about his future plans after the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) chaired by Tim Kerr QC rejected the appeal, deciding a tax evasion conviction in Italy last year was an offence of dishonesty. Although the disqualification period expires on April 10, Cellino is facing further tax evasion cases in Italy later this year which could now affect his long-term future with Leeds. Asked if he would be back in April, Cellino told Sky Sports News: “Listen, I am still shocked by what has happened

• Holders Arsenal who have won the trophy 26 times, will not find it easy in Hove! • Cambridge were a non-League team last season and could have a record gate of 9,000 for the visit of 27-time winners Manchester United. • Birmingham and WBA met in the 1931 final when the Baggies won 21.
• It’s possible that only seven Premiership teams could be at home and six away. • The biggest 4th round crowds will be at Anfield and the Etihad Stadium. • The only all-Championship tie features Cardiff v Reading, while the only League One clash will be between Preston and Sheffield United. • Rochdale have only reached the fifth round twice, in 1990 and 2003. • The only Premiership left in the competition that hasn’t reached the final is Swansea who reached the semi-finals in 1926 and 1964. • Chelsea have appeared in four of last eight finals.
walking football in los gallardos The Mighty Vicko blew his whistle and the game was underway. Within seconds the Coffin Dodgers goal was under fierce attack. This almost constant onslaught paid off when Rob Longstride scored a beautiful goal. Hurrah! As usual Fiery Fred disputed the goal, but after a brief conference the Mighty Vicko decided in his own democratic way that you play the game his way or it`s the highway. A goal down, the Coffin Dodgers upped their game and several times came very close to scoring but Lady Luck did not smile on them. Aaaaah! Vicko was forced to blow his whistle when Lottery Len, so called because he keeps rolling over – geddit? – made a spirited run down the pitch. “I had to stop you,” said Vicko to Len, “You were walking so fast I was scared stiff you were going to hurt yourself!” The Seizure Stoppers gained control of the ball and with opposing players bouncing off him as he thundered down the pitch, Big John slipped one in. The crowd went wild. Hooray! Hurrah! The Coffin Dodgers went on the attack once more but their attempts to score were all to no avail. At one point they looked certain to score but
the move was magnificently thwarted by Peter Dem Bones Kelly. Both sides agreed it was the best bit of thwarting they had seen for a long time. Just before half-time Vicko was again forced to make another democratic decision over the No ball over waist height rule. “We go by my waist height. None of your Simon Cowell waistlines here! So shut your gobs or you`re off!” His poetic words coupled with his distinctive lilting Liverpool accent are a joy to us all. At half time Hurricane Helen appeared with plates of refreshing orange segments. As some of the players were not wearing their false teeth the oranges took a lot of sucking and the noise was incredible. At the sound of the whistle play resumed and it wasn`t long before the Seizure Stoppers yet another goal by none other than Near Miss Chris. Tears of delight ran down his face. Not only did he score but Mighty Vicko awarded him a House Point. WOW! Any other team at 3 goals down might have collapsed, but the Coffin Dodgers are made of sterner stuff. With dazzling footwork from the whole team Fiery Fred got one in past Fred De Merc and that is how the game ended 3 – 1 to the Seizure Stoppers. Hurrah! Goals from Parejo, Rodrigo and Negredo handed Valencia victory despite the efforts of Hemed, who equalised twice for Almería. Valencia CF saw off UD Almería 32 on matchday 19 of the Liga BBVA. Despite Juan Ignacio Martínez’s men twice levelling up the match, the hosts claimed an important victory that lifts them to third in the table. All three of the nominees ply their trade for European giants whose players have regularly featured in these award ceremonies over the years. And as the game moved towards half time, the Israeli could have put his team in front, but his headed attempt rebounded off the bar. After the restart, Almería came under increased pressure as Valencia attacked their penalty box. André Gomes and the recently introduced Álvaro Negredo had the visiting defence on the back foot as the guests sought to protect the scoreline, and Valencia’s insistence told as Negredo finished off a cross from Gayà to make the final score 3-2. lfp.es
