MOJÁCAR cIN FITUR ommissioner

Once again, Mojacar took to the stage at the annual International Tourism Fair in Madrid. The general feedback from the major companies representing the hotel and accommodation sector

at the Fair was very positive indeed. Moreover, it was the platform to represent Mojácar as a major tourist destination and the opportunity for the tourist representatives to participate in a number of professional meetings and events to help promote the brand image ‘Mojácar’. One of the initiatives highlighted was the new information web site for the whole Almeriense Levante (the eastern part of the province) which offers free promotional space to companies in Mojácar and the surrounding area. Additionally, at the stand of Turespaña, Mojácar was presented as one of the group of most beautiful towns in Spain to all directors of Spanish Tourist Offices both here and abroad. In addition, a formal agreement was signed with the high

British holidaymakers trapped by snow

A group of retired people from East Anglia are among 200 people who had to be rescued after being trapped by snow on roads, in northern Spain. Angela and Charles Pugh are part of a group of about 40 people, from Norfolk and Suffolk, who got stuck on their journey from Santander to Estepona. Abandoned cars and overturned lorries have piled up on main roads near the northern city of Santander. “Spanish television said this was the worst weather for 25 years and heavy snow had also fallen on the plain,” said Mr Pugh. He praised Spanish police for rescuing them. “They did a great job in very difficult circumstances. The snow had taken everyone by surprise but they responded so well.” The couple brought warm clothes for the sea crossing from Plymouth but were expecting to be wearing T-shirts. When they arrived on a ferry at

Santander on Wednesday morning, they were told that there was “a little snow” on the roads. The group all started out on the journey to Estepona, south of Marbella but as they climbed up into the mountains, the conditions quickly worsened. Mr Pugh and his wife are trapped at an hotel in the village of Reinosa, about 45 miles (70km) south of Santander. The BBC’s Tom Burridge in Madrid says a large area of central Spain has seen an unusually high amount of snowfall in recent days. Hundreds of cars were stuck for up to 17 hours overnight on roads between Cantabria and the province of Palencia. Local media report temperatures of -15C (5F) and up 40cm (1.3ft) of snow in the region. Bbc.co.uk

Claire has lived full-time in Spain for 8 years and speaks English and Spanish. Prior to emigrating, Claire was a selfemployed consultant assisting small businesses with a range of legal, tax, financial and employment issues. Claire has developed a good network of Spanish contacts – solicitors, hestorias and tax advisors – and is keen to use this knowledge to help the ex-pat community. Albox Services is aiming to act as a “one-stop” shop making life easier for ex-pat residents and home owners who are frustrated by, fearful of, or trying to ignore, the myriad of documentation required by the Spanish/EU authorities. Albox Services has designed a personal review covering up to date legislation about topics such as residence, NIE, padron, asset declaration, tax returns, healthcare, driving licences, passports, wills, ITV and IBI. A “returning to the UK” package has also been developed. The services offered will also include translation, appointment making and accompanied town hall visits. A personal review will identify any problems, and help will either be given directly, or referrals can be made to specialists where necessary. Prices will be available in advance. The aim is to make life easier. With increasing pan-European legislation and stronger application of Spain’s own laws people are more at risk than ever of unintentionally falling foul of English and/or Spanish legislation. People may be vulnerable simply because it seems so confusing, or be overwhelmed by how to put things right. Longer-term ex-pats may need to update official documents. Whatever the problem, Albox Services will try to solve it with a personal, professional service and transparent pricing. Located within Albox Insurance, Calle Malaga. Taiwan crash plane ‘lost engine power’

Black box data from the TransAsia Airlines turbo-prop plane that crashed in Taiwan has revealed that power was cut to both engines, investigators say.

Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council said the engines failed to produce enough thrust for two minutes after take-off. Data suggest that the flight crew tried to stop and restart one of the engines, without success. Flight GE235 carried 58 passengers and crew, at least 35 of whom died when the plane crashed into a river. Fifteen people survived the crash. According to investigators at a briefing in Taipei, the plane ran into trouble just 37 seconds after taking off from Taipei’s Songshan airport. Thomas Wang, director of the Aviation Safety Council, said the pilot announced a “flame-out”, which can occur when the fuel supply to the engine is interrupted or when there is faulty combustion. However, Mr Wang said there was in fact no flame-out, and the right-hand engine had actually shifted into idle mode without the oil pressure having changed. “The plane flashed a flame-out signal for one of the two engines at 10:53:28 when the plane climbed to an altitude of 1,200ft, triggering a warning,” AFP news agency quoted Mr Wang as saying. “Then the other [left] engine was shut down manually. The pilot tried to restart

the engines but to no avail.

“That means that during the flight’s final moments, neither engine had any thrust. We heard ‘Mayday’ at 10:54:35,” he added. The flight, which had been bound for Taiwan’s Kinmen Island, crashed into the Keelung River just 72 seconds later. The plane, an ATR 72-600, is able to fly with just one functioning engine. Mr Wang said it was not clear why the left engine had been shut down. Preliminary findings A more substantial report into the crash will be released within the next 30 days, ahead of the publication of a final report in the next three to six months.

SOL News quoted as saying. Crash investigators told Taiwanese media that Mr Liao’s hands were still on the plane’s controls when his body was found, Reuters reported. Both the pilot and co-pilot were found dead in the cockpit with their legs badly broken, according to local media reports. Taiwan’s aviation regulator has ordered thorough engine and fuel system checks on the remaining 22 ATR-manufactured aircraft currently in active service on the island. The BBC’s Cindy Sui in Taipei said search and rescue teams had been

focussing their efforts downstream of the crash site, and are carrying out operations along a 15-kilometre (9mile) stretch of the river. The main parts of the plane, which had been submerged, have been retrieved from the water, and divers are now attempting to locate the bodies of other victims. Search officials said on Thursday that it was extremely unlikely that any additional survivors would be found, and said that retrieval efforts had been severely hampered by poor visibility in the murky water. Bbc.co.uk

The pilot, Liao Chien-tsung, has been praised by Taipei’s mayor for managing to steer the plane away from apartment blocks and commercial buildings before it came down. Taiwanese Vice President Wu Den-yih also paid tribute the 42-year-old pilot, saying he had “meticulously grasped” the flight controls in the plane’s last few seconds in the air, according to the Associated Press news agency. “In the final moments he still wanted to control the plane to avoid harming residents in the housing communities,” he was

FINISHING TOUCHES

Last week I wrote about buying the best quality furniture, mattresses and sofas that you can for your rental property to enable you to maximise the return on your investment and get as any many referrals as possible from your clients renting your properties. It always helps to have a good rental agent behind you, talk to people and listen to who is being recommended. A good agent will tell you what is required of your property to keep a good rental trade going. They will also inform you if some painting needs to be done or if something needs replacing or up grading etc. Your property may have been empty for a while for one reason or another so before your client’s arrival the property needs to be really clean, including inside the cupboards, wardrobes and drawers. Once you have done all this the little finishing touches are required. That is a bit of a list to add some comfortable touches that makes your clients stay a bit more relaxed. Do you have mirrors in the bathroom’s, long wall mirrors in the bedrooms or at least in the master bedroom and may be one in the living area. The ladies will appreciate them, no woman likes to go out just on the husband’s say so, we all know they are going to say you look great if they know what’s good for them! Besides, they just want to get to the bar as soon as possible for a beer. Mirrors also reflect light and can have the effect of making a room look bigger. Are there bedside lights as it can be annoying when you have gone to bed, been reading and have to get up and turn off the main light. A table Lamp in the living area is handy for reading in the evenings and soft lighting for those romantic moments while on holiday after the kids have gone to bed. How about some cushions on your sofas, it not only gives a homely look but your clients can make themselves more comfortable too. Talking of a homely look do you have curtain poles and curtains. They really do not need to be expensive curtains but they will add some colour against the white walls and for early spring and autumn rentals will add the feeling of warmth to the property. When buying your bed throws or bedspreads match the curtains to them so the rooms do not look a mish mash of colours. Do not buy too light a colour or they will be forever in the wash, try and use warm

looking colours, this is welcoming when your clients open the doors on their arrival. Pictures are a very personal thing but a couple in the living area and one or two in the bedrooms will again take away the bland look of the white walls. Do not forget you can also dot a few knick knacks about, not a lot or the cleaners will not be happy with you. Just enough to take away the clinical look of no one lives here. There is an enormous number of types and varieties of fruit that can be grown under Mediterranean climate conditions ranging from soft fruits to grapes and temperate and sub-tropical climate fruit trees. Even tropical fruits are possible in the warmer south facing frost free spots. In our best selling book ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’ we describe over seventy types and have grown half ourselves in a 350 metre above sea level valley some dozen kilometres from the Mediterranean sea shore. For those who live in apartments many trees , especially if dwarf varieties or more vigorous varieties grafted to dwarfing root stocks can be grown successfully in containers. There is a special chapter about this in the book ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean style’.

Our Business is Growing Specialists in:

Seven success factors for fruit trees

1. That you take note of the drought and frost resistances of each type of fruit before you decide what to try growing. This information is provided in the book ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’. 2. That you keep root balls damp but not wet until deep tap roots have been out down. A CHIMNEY OR FLUE NEEDS 5. brit arrested in sotogrande

A British man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a German man who he caught filming his young daughter in a restaurant in the upmarket resort of Sotogrande. Kainth Devinder, has been named locally as the 40-year-old man taken into custody for an attack on Sandro Rottman, 43, a German national who subesquently died from his injuries. It was reported that the German had been arrested only a few days earlier for possession of child pronography. It is alleged that Devinder saw the man filming his young daughter with a tablet device at the busy Spinnaker restaurant in the Sotogrande port on Saturday night. “The girl’s father got up and went to the table where the victim was,” a source in the Civil Guard police force in the city of Algeciras told

AFP, citing witnesses.

“He took the tablet off him, saw that there were recordings of his daughter, and that was when the attack took place.” The restaurant owner confirmed to The Local that the incident had taken place on Saturday. “Yes, it was Sandro who was attacked but I don´t know the other man, who has been here only few times before,” “It happened on Saturday night but the police have told me not to talk about it becuase of the investigation,” he said. A spokesman from the British Embassy told The Local: “We are urgently investigating reports of the arrest of a British national in the Cadiz area in southern Spain. We stand ready to offer consular assistance if requested.” thelocal.es

Why come to Roquetas de Mar

A Roquetas de Mar holiday promises dawn to dusk summer sun and warm Mediterranean seas combined with an authentic Spanish atmosphere. The evenings offer varied bars and restaurants. However, if you’re looking for binge drinking then I’m afraid it’s not for you. As Roquetas does not attract the sheer number of tourists seen in some of the other resorts, there is plenty of room to lounge around and sunbathe, or to take a leisurely swim, without the problems of overcrowing seen in many Spanish beach resorts. Roquetas de Mar lies to the south of the town of Almeria in the direction of Malaga. It is around half an hour’s drive from the airport of Almeria. Set on flat terrain, fairly good paving and low-rise apartments make Roquetas de Mar ideal for families with younger children, and mature holidaymakers. The town has used traditional Spanish architecture as its blueprint, creating an artificial, yet quaint village atmosphere. Unlike Mojacar, the old village of Roquetas hasn’t quite embraced tourism and remains pretty much in a world of its own. There are villas scattered along the sea front, alongside some of the hotels and bars. A pedestrian promenade offers pleasant strolls. The beach is a mix of sand and pebble with rows of sunbeds and parasols - such a large expanse it rarely appears crowded. Watersports are available in the summer months ifconditions favour them. In the summer months it’s wise to avoid the beach in the afternoons; the sun is extremely strong here - have a late, long, leisurely lunch instead.

Keeping your heart healthy!

Keeping your heart healthy, whatever your age, is the most important thing you can do to help prevent and manage heart disease. Healthy Eating A healthy diet can help reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease and stop you gaining weight, reducing your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. It can also help lower cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of some cancers. Even if you already have a heart condition, a healthy diet can benefit your heart.

Try to eat: • plenty of fruit and vegetables • plenty of starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. Choose wholegrain varieties wherever possible • some milk and dairy products • some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein • only a small amount of foods and drinks high in fats and/ or sugar. Choose options that are lower in fat, salt and sugar whenever you can. Keep Active You’ll soon feel the benefits when you become more active. You’ll feel fitter, have more energy, be more relaxed and have more confidence. Set yourself realistic goals that are specific and achievable. For example, set a goal to walk 30 minutes every day or learn how to swim. Remember, everyday activities count, so look out for opportunities to be active during the day. For example, use the stairs instead of the escalators, walk to the local shop rather

than taking the car and do some stretches when watching TV. Every ten minutes counts! Involve friends and family to make activities more fun, sociable and enjoyable. Go jogging with a friend and support and motivate each other, take the children swimming or join an exercise class. Prompt yourself to be more physically active by keeping reminders around the house. Put Post-it notes on the fridge door or by the kettle, place your cycling helmet on your dressing table or put your walking shoes near the door. You can use a pedometer to count the number of steps you walk each day. It’s easy to use. All you need is a good pair of shoes and you are ready to take a step in the right direction, so you can push yourself to go that bit further next time you exercise. Walking is an ideal activity as it’s free and easy to do anywhere. Recognise when you achieve your goals. Think of things that you could reward yourself with, like a copy of your favourite magazine, a new pair of trainers or a massage. Manage your weight! Research shows that reaching and keeping to a healthy weight cuts your risk of heart disease because it helps prevent and manage conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes that put you at greater risk of coronary heart disease. Even if you don’t have any of these conditions, it’s important to keep to a healthy weight so you don’t develop them in future. If you’re a smoker, stopping smoking is the single most important step you can take to protect the health of your heart. Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack compared with people who have never smoked. Stopping smoking has huge benefits and it’s never too late to give up. Alcohol! Drinking more than the recommended amount of alcohol can have a harmful effect on your heart and general health. It can cause abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure and cause damage to your heart muscle and other diseases such as stroke, liver problems and some cancers. Alcohol is also high in calories so it can lead to weight gain. It also lowers your inhibitions which might mean you find it harder to stick to your healthy eating plans when you have been drinking. SOLTIMES february 2015

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I was watching the adverts between a program’s segments when I saw this advert for ‘Which’ Magazine, in which they were offering ‘Free’ advice about various everyday computing activities (Backing up file and System, AntiVirus, AntiMalware). This got me thinking about writing an article on one of these subjects. After several hours reading previous articles I found that ALL these subjects had been covered. So for today, I will offer advice about WHAT computer you should buy! Before I start, there will be some of you, with very long memories, that will say “Trev, you’ve already done that!’. This is true but it has been a question that I’ve been asked a number of time recently, and usually, I give the same answers. These answers are in the form of questions. What are these questions? 1. What do you want to use the computer for (Skype, Emails, browsing the web, watching English TV over the Internet, something much more serious)? Reason: In ascending order of usefulness – Smartphone, Phablet(more than a phone, but less than a tablet), Tablet (7”), Tablet (10”), WebBook / Notebook, Laptop (Entry Level), Laptop (Professional) or finally Desktop / Tower. Anything before “more serious” will result in options before Desktop/Tower. 2. Are you likely to want to take it travelling with you? Reason: Size and portability! Removes Tower / Desktop and larger Laptops from the equation. 3. How large / small is your budget? Reason: Not everyone is related to the Rothschild family and money has to be budgeted closely! Possible answers – “Never enough”; “Don’t be nosey”; or even

a sensible value :-) 4. When do you want it for? Reason: You can get some real bargains over the internet but as always ‘Buyer Beware’ and might take several days to several weeks. Your local computer supplier can sell you what you want off the shelf or get it for you within a week. Also, if anything goes wrong with your purchase, it is much easier to take it to the shop and get it sorted quickly and easily! So my simple rules for buying new technology are: Rule #1: Answer all the question above with complete honesty Rule #2: Re-read your answers as they will point to the best computer that you want. Rule #3: Don’t let the sales person sell you anything that you didn’t want or ask for! They want to sell the most expensive equipment they can. Rule #4 If all the above fail you “Ask Trev”! I would suspect, for the greatest number of readers, that an entry level Laptop (minimum memory (2GB’s), Medium Storage (350-500GB’s) will be more than adequate for the next 4-5 years), OR a better quality Tablet (Not Necessarily iPad!) will fulfil all these needs and have ‘boot’ to spare! Why do I ask questions about your motivation for buying a computer? Quite simple! Unlike the shops that are wanting to sell you the product with the greatest profit for them, and as I generally make nothing for this advice, I will find out what you really NEED and then direct you towards a selection of products that will suit you. Contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below.

For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

The brilliant Nikola Tesla

Tesla was born in 1856 in what is now Croatia; he was so academically gifted, that aged 14 his teachers suspected him of cheating as he’d work out complex sums in his head. In just three years he finished the usually four year long course. He was then bedridden for 9 months with cholera and when he recovered; ran away to avoid conscription into the Army. At Vienna Polytechnic he studied from 3am to 11pm most days. In later years Tesla admitted to never having more than 2 hours sleep a night. He excelled in his first year though his family were warned he would die from overwork. Then he argued with his tutors and got addicted to gambling, losing then winning back his allowance and tuition fees. By examination time he hadn’t studied; was refused an extension and left without graduating. In 1882 Tesla worked for the Edison Company in France. He relocated with the company to New York a couple of years later; but his money was stolen and he arrived penniless. He started work for Thomas Edison who allegedly offered him $50,000 if he could fix all the problems with

UK planning for possible Greece exit from the eurozone

The prime minister this Monday morning chaired a meeting of senior officials to discuss the impact on the UK of possible Greek exit from the eurozone - and to take steps to ensure British banks and companies would not be excessively damaged. Attended by the head of the Treasury, Nick Macpherson, the Treasury's director of financial stability, Lowrie Kahn, and the Bank of England's international director Phil Evans, David Cameron asked for information on the impact on Greece and the rest of the eurozone of Greece leaving the eurozone. The chancellor did not attend, because he is on his way to the G20 meeting in Istanbul - though he has been kept in the loop on discussions. There was agreement that the probability of Greece adopting a new currency had increased, as per my column of this morning. However those attending still believe that some kind of compromise between Athens and other eurozone governments can be reached to keep Greece in the euro. David Cameron heard that Greek people would see their savings wiped out, inflation would take off, and there would be a massive devaluation, He was also told that Greek companies and banks would face acute financial difficulties because of the mismatch between the "hard" euros they would owe to those outside Greece which would have to be serviced out of "soft" or "devaluing" new drachmas. So any British businesses and banks owed money by Greek businesses or individuals would struggle to get their money back. However the direct exposure of British banks to Greece is relatively small. Perhaps the bigger issue for the UK would be contagion from a Greek exit to other weaker eurozone economies - and the risk that they would suffer acute outflows of capital, which would further undermine their financial and economic stability. A government source said that the eurozone remained hugely important to the UK as its most important trading partner, and so it is sensible for the prime minister to plan in case the Greek crisis were to worsen and exit could not be avoided. bbc.co.uk

Former pop star Gary Glitter convicted

British former pop star Gary Glitter has been found guilty of child sex abuse for crimes he committed more than three decades ago. The 70-year-old Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was convicted Thursday of one count of attempted rape of a girl under the age of 13, one count of having sex with a girl under the age of 13, and four counts of indecent assault against girls, two aged under 13 and two aged under 16. The six offenses were committed against three victims between 1975 and 1980. Glitter is due to be sentenced on February 27. Glitter was known as a “glam rocker” in the 1970s for his flamboyant clothes and performing style. He sold 18 million records with hits like “I’m the Leader of the Gang,” “I Love You Love Me Love” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Detective Chief Inspector Michael Orchard of London’s Metropolitan Police praised the courage of the victims in coming forward to police; years after the crimes were committed, in a statement after the verdict. “Paul Gadd has shown himself to be a habitual sexual predator, who took advantage of the star status afforded to him by targeting young girls who trusted him and were in awe of his fame,” Orchard said. “His lack of remorse and defence that the victims were lying make his

Glitter has been prosecuted previously on sex charges. In 1999, he admitted possessing child pornography and was jailed for four months. While living in Vietnam, he was convicted of sex offenses against young girls and jailed for nearly three years before being deported to England. Glitter is the latest celebrity to be accused or convicted of historic sex offenses. Radio and television star Jimmy Savile, who died in 2011 aged 84, was revealed after his death to have been one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders. British police say more than 200 victims -aged between five and 75 -- have been identified. Last year celebrity publicist Max Clifford was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for assaults on girls, while Australian entertainer Rolf Harris was jailed for five years for indecent assaults against four girls. simulation revealing dark matter density in the universe galaxy. Dark matter, which pervades our universe, is difficult to see because it barely interacts with ordinary matter except through gravity. Since the 1970s, scientists have found evidence of this elusive substance in other galaxies by measuring the rotation speed of gas and stars. Now scientists have, for the first time, used the same technique to provide proof of dark matter in the innermost part of the Milky Way. Measuring the rotation of gas and stars allows astronomers to effectively ‘weigh’ the host galaxy and find out its total mass. These measurements showed that the visible matter only accounts for a fraction of the total weight - the predominant part is delivered by dark matter. Applying this technique to our own galaxy is possible, and the existence of dark matter in the outer parts of the Milky Way is well known. But up until now it has proven very difficult to use this technique in the innermost regions of our galaxy, which is around 100,000 light years across. Now scientists led by the Technical University of Munich have found direct observational proof of the presence of dark matter in the innermost part the Milky Way, including at the Earth’s location and in our own ‘cosmic neighbourhood’. In a first step they created the most

and stars in the Milky Way. Then they compared the measured rotation speed with that expected under the assumption that only luminous matter exists in the galaxy. The comparison clearly showed that the rotation cannot be explained unless large amounts of dark matter exist around us, and between us and the galactic heart. ‘We know that dark matter is needed in our Galaxy to keep the stars and gas rotating at their observed speeds,’ says Dr Miguel Pato, who conducted the analysis at Technical University of Munich. ‘However, we still do not know what dark matter is composed of. ‘This is one of the most important science questions of our times.’ The scientists say that with future astronomical observations, the method will allow to measure the distribution of dark matter in our galaxy with unprecedented precision. ‘This will permit to refine the understanding of the structure and evolution of our galaxy,’ says Dr Pato. ‘And it will trigger more robust predictions for the many experiments worldwide that search for dark matter particles’. bbc.co.uk

UK property marketthe‘still has punch’ market.”

UK house prices rose 2% in January, according to the latest data from the Halifax, and the market still has plenty of punch, says an investment specialist. The January rise was the biggest January monthly increase since 2009. Average prices rose 8.5% year-onyear and 1.9% over the last quarter to £193,130. Housing Economist, Martin Ellis, says, “This bounce-back in house price growth in January coincides with reports of the first rise in mortgage approvals for six months in December. These improvements may indicate that the recent declines in mortgage rates, the reform of stamp duty and the first increases in real earnings for several years are providing a modest boost to

But he warned that January’s figures can be volatile and price rises in 2015, which is an election year, are likely to be lower than in 2014. “We expect the overall downward trend in house price growth seen since last summer to continue over the coming months. Nationally, house prices are predicted to increase in a range of 3 to 5% in 2015 compared with 8% last year.” Rob Weaver, Director of Investments, for property crowdfunding platform Property Partner, says although the property market has slowed compared to a year ago, it still has some punch and is unlikely to underperform. http://www.opp.today/

Google has just launched an online mortgage calculator which allows anyone to calculate how much it will cost them to become a home owner. This new tool has so far only been introduced in the United States, but is set to expand into other countries, including Spain, very soon. The mortgage calculator is a function that is available directly on the search engine and it works both on desktop browsers and mobile devices. The new tool was tested for the first time last year, with a small number of users, but it is now being made more widely available. Users can consult the Google mortgage calculator to find out how much they will have to pay, on various housing prices and interest rates, and get answers without having to access an independent site.Cinco Días reported that this service is easily accessed by typing “mortgage

calculator” directly into the search engine. The user will then be provided with a set of fields to fill in, such as the mortgage amount, the interest rate and the term in years to pay off the loan. From that information, the Google tool will calculate the total cost of the mortgage and the cost of the monthly payments. Google also allows the settings of the tool to be changed in order to calculate how much of a mortgage loan the user can request, depending on the level of monthly payments they can afford to pay, and thus enables them to search for a home which meets those requirements. It is also possible to adjust the interest rate and the length of the mortgage repayment term. cnbc.com

Solar ‘generators’ power up remote homes

As darkness falls, Dora Mjungu and her two brothers cram themselves around the faint flame of a kerosene lamp, struggling to finish their homework before their mother blows out the lamp to save the fuel cost. ”I don’t dare to go to bed before getting it done. If I did, I would rather stay at home because my teacher would be mad at me and hit me hard as if she was killing a snake,” said Mjungu, as the lamp, made from a used cooking oil tin, cast scary shadows on the sitting room walls. For years, 14-year-old Mjungu, a pupil at Usinge primary school in remote Tura village in Tanzania’s Tabora region, has been trying to convince her mother to buy a Chinese-made solar lamp, which would not emit smoke that makes

her cough. Her mother says pupils have long survived studying by firelight or even moonlight, and “circumstances are such that I cannot afford any other kind of lamp.”But their household will soon be among hundreds to benefit from a new governmentrun solar power project, intended to bring electricity off-grid areas of rural Tanzania. More than 840 households - and, crucially, small factories - in Tabora, Dodoma and Katavi regions so far have been connected to solar grid systems, in which large numbers of solar panels feed batteries housed in shipping containers, with the power then carried out to the community on distribution lines similar to those used by Tanesco, the state-run Bedar, 04288 (next to Miramar Restaurant)

power utility. “I am very happy to be part of this project. I hope my children will now spend more time studying in bright light and they will no longer suffer from the smoke,” said Mjungu’s mother, Mama Dora. Edward Ishengoma, an altenative energy commissioner in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, said 14 solar containers, each with the capacity to supply electricity to 60 households or businesses, have been installed by Elektro Merl, an Austrian firm, at a cost of 13 billion Tanzanian shillings, or $6 million. Chinese firm Chicco has also been contracted to supply solar units. The funds, which come from a loan from Austria’s government to Tanzania, include maintenance and repairs for five years, officials said. The project aims to reach people in remote villages not covered by the country’s Rural Energy Agency projects, Ishengoma said. After the pilot phase of the project ends in July this year, he said, the government plans to install 600 more solar “generators” in villages around the country. “People can also use these solar generators for their economic activities since they contain power outlets that can be connected to simple machines such as water pumps and welding,” he said. “We hope that they will find them useful and improve their life.” Styden Rwebangila, the solar project’s coordinator, said the government hopes to connect solar

SOLAR SAWMILL Salum Maulid, who runs a small sawmill in Tura village, said the solar generator in his village - which sits a stone’s throw away from his home - is now powering the machines he uses in his work. “It has really simplified my work; I get enough power to run the drills and electric saws,” he said. The new solar energy access is currently being provided free of charge, government officials said, though arrangements are being made to ensure users contribute something to cover the project’s ongoing costs. Similar projects are being implemented in Senegal, Mali, Cameroon and Gambia, officials said. Tanzania has a very low level of electricity consumption per capita, with only 18 percent of the country currently connected to traditional grid power, according to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. While diesel generators provide power in many unconnected areas, they can be expensive and polluting, experts say, noting that renewable energy offers a cheaper and less polluting alternative, once systems are in place. trust.org

The Essential Alqueria: A holiday guide

Firstly, congratulations on choosing Alqueria for your next holiday experience and secondly well done with the purchase of this travel guide which will enhance your stay in our wonderful country. OK let’s get the numbers out of the way before we tell you of the wonders you have in store. Alqueria is an independent republic situated on the Iberian Peninsular and is completely encircled by mainland Spain. It is a village of some eight hundred souls. It sits in the Alquerian Valley at the foot of the Sierra Alhamilla. The currency is the Raro. At the time of going to press there are 25,478 Raros to the Euro. It isn’t however necessary to buy the local currency as Euros, Dollars, Pounds Stirling, gold and prescription drugs are readily accepted. The climate of Alqueria is as warm as its people. Potential visitors suffering from respiratory problems should however consult their physicians before travelling. A further note regarding the warmth of the people. Manuela is especially warm and wives are recommended to keep at least a hundred metres separation between her and their respective husbands. Night life in Alqueria is second to none. Whether you dance to the Syncopation Four with Sanchez Malnota at the Bar La Casa Devante or bop the night away to the pulsating sound of the Constipation Five at the La Golondrina Verde you won’t be disappointed. One legal rider to Alqueria’s night life. Being on the streets after ten invalidates any duty of care owed to the traveller by the Alquerian government, travel agents, couriers, in fact everyone really. The cuisine of the Village is singular to say the least. One particular dish, ‘The Alquerian Plato’ has defied analysis by the world’s health authorities despite many years of trying. People who have enjoyed

the meal report minimal psychological change and only a moderate loss of stomach lining. So go on give it a go! It’s worth it, honest! The delightful Río Verde offers the visitor a chance to unwind on its shaded banks or take a dip in its buoyant and wonderfully translucent water. The variety of wildlife is astonishing and specialised species abound in the refreshing depths of the River. Please note that cases of Polydactyly has never definitely been traced to swimming in the Río Verde. Regular ferias take place in Alqueria and due to high spirits and the sheer exuberance of life they can get a little boisterous. Brick throwing and fire bombing are charming elements of these celebrations. These festivals can be viewed in complete safety from one of the many concrete bunkers built for that very purpose. So have we whetted your appetite for a holiday in Alqueria? Come soon and we hope you return many times.

for the US ‘may supply arms to Ukraine’ West crisis.

blamed the

President Barack Obama says the US is studying the option of supplying lethal defensive arms to Ukraine if diplomacy fails to end the crisis in the east. Russia had violated “every commitment”

made in the failing Minsk agreement, he added, after talks with the German chancellor on a new peace deal. Mr Obama has come under pressure from senior US officials to supply arms, despite objections from Angela Merkel. Russia denies accusations of sending troops and supplying the rebels. The latest diplomatic efforts come amid renewed fighting between the pro-Russia rebels and Ukrainian government troops, with fighting centred around the strategic railway hub of Debaltseve. The rebels said on Monday they had cut off a key supply road to the town, which is near the rebel-held city of Donetsk, but the military says the battle is ongoing. Ukrainian government officials say nine soldiers and at least seven civilians have been killed in fighting over the last 24 hours. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is considering the peace proposals, earlier

The crisis in Ukraine has already claimed more than 5,300 lives and displaced 1.5 million people from their homes. Mrs Merkel met the US president in Washington on Monday to update him on Franco-German efforts to revive last year’s Minsk peace plan, which collapsed amid fighting over the winter. The detailed proposals have not been released but the plan is thought to include a demilitarised zone of 50-70km (31-44 miles) around the current front line.Speaking alongside the German chancellor, President Obama said the option of lethal defensive weapons for the Ukrainian government remained on the table. “If, in fact, diplomacy fails, what I’ve asked my team to do is to look at all options,” he said, adding that offering lethal arms was only one of the options under consideration. Mrs Merkel, who has made it clear she opposes sending lethal arms, acknowledged setbacks in efforts to reach a diplomatic solution with Russia over Ukraine, but said that they would continue.Meanwhile Mr Obama criticised Russian aggression in Ukraine, saying that the borders of Europe could not be “redrawn at the barrel of a gun”. But this Russian aggression had reinforced the unity of the US and its European allies, he added. EU foreign ministers in Brussels agreed on Monday to impose further sanctions against Russian and rebel officials, but have put them on hold for a week to give the peace efforts a chance. Mr Putin earlier said Western countries had broken pledges not to expand Nato and forced countries to choose between

The Wrong Day

They arrived 4 years ago, and ever since they have been sitting silently against our back wall, quiescent but ever present. The cats use them as stepping stones, birds like to hop around on them looking for creepy crawlies, while the creepy crawlies themselves hide in the many nooks and crannies created by their knobbly shapes. All this they tolerate with omniscient calm; they know that their moment will come. Every time I pass the back of the house I am aware of their existence. They know me, but they wait, as enduring as time itself, for the day of Armageddon. Armageddon arrived last week. ‘We’ll have to do something about them.’ Pete said. ‘They’ve got to go.’ ‘Well, I’m not going to touch them unless I have adequate armament.’ I insisted. ‘I’m not tangling with them unless I have the appropriate weaponry.’ Pete looked at them, and looked at me, a somewhat over-the-hill example of the fair sex. It was obvious that when battle was met I would be as effective as a hamster against a pack of Rottweilers, so we betook ourselves off to search for suitably lethal mechanical back-up. Armed, but not yet dangerous, we returned. We had found and purchased the wherewithal to overcome their superior mass, but only after hand-to-hand combat had begun. We now needed something to give us the edge, to allow us to seize the initiative and bring them to heel. This was a bit trickier, and involved several trips to various Ferreterias, an apparently random selection of bits and pieces and quite a lot of angle grinding before the Containment Contraption was declared fit for

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk purpose. Now we were ready. We approached the field of battle dressed in clothes that could be chucked out if the confrontation got bloody, and carrying the means with which to defeat the implacable enemy and ascertain our victory. All in all, the encounter went very well. I took advantage of the element of surprise and grappled fearlessly with each one in turn, grasping it in both hands and inserting it into the Containment Contraption before it had time to mount an adequate defence. Once subjugated, Pete set about carving each Monster into several pieces, before stepping back so that I could remove the chunks of exMonster before grabbing and inserting the next one. When victory had been declared, and as we were putting the chainsaw away Pete said ‘Next time we’ll get smaller logs.’ I agreed. ‘Good idea. Be much easier.’

and meals. Blankets don’t do well against Russian tanks.”

In comments to an Egyptian newspaper, Mr Putin accused Western states of supporting a “coup d’etat in Kiev” - a reference to the ousting of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych last year.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has denied any rift with EU leaders, stating that they remained “united” and were “working closely together”.

He lost power amid protests over his decision to scrap a deal that would have seen Ukraine establish closer ties with the European Union.

A ceasefire signed by Ukraine and proRussian separatist rebels on 5 September 2014 in Minsk, Belarus

Since then, Russia has annexed Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula and rebels in the east have sought to establish full control over the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Germany’s peace efforts were sharply criticised by senior US Republicans who attended an international security conference in Munich over the weekend. Senator Lyndsey Graham, who attended with Senator John McCain, said: “At the end of the day, to our European friends, this is not working. You can go to Moscow until you turn blue in the face. Stand up to what is clearly a lie and a danger.” Mr McCain said: “The Ukrainians are being slaughtered and we’re sending them blankets

What was the Minsk agreement?

They agreed to 12 points including pulling back heavy guns by at least 15km (9 miles), releasing prisoners, allowing access to international observers, and setting up a buffer zone on the Russia-Ukraine border. Foreign mercenaries were to withdraw and Donetsk and Luhansk would get wider self-ruleBut military clashes never entirely stopped. Each side accused the other of violating the deal and violence later flared the length of the ceasefire line Rebels also held their own local elections in November 2014, in defiance of Kiev. The government responded by saying it would scrap partial autonomy for Donetsk and Luhansk bb.co.uk

book review The ship, bow first, was slowly sinking into the water. People began tumbling like broken dolls from the decks, flopping, flailing into the sea. There was a huge cracking sound-and then the Titanic disappeared. Kate Alcott, a pseudonym for Patricia O’Brien, used transcripts of the US Senate hearings over the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. Some of the characters are based on real characters who either survived the sinking such as the Duff Gordons and Margaret Brown as well as Senate William Alden Smith who presided over the hearings, otherwise Alcott admits to this being a work of fiction with the inclusion of factual evidence. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping from start to finish and I mean that! Tess Collins is the kind of heroine I admire and strongly approve of. She comes from modest roots, a large family struggling to make ends meet. Her father is critical and a man of the time, denying equal rights to women. Tess is constantly haunted by his oppressive and deprecating tones: You’re a farm girl, do your job, keep your head down and don’t put on airs. He was under the impression that she would ruin her life through defiance. Thankfully, Tess is a stubborn lady and is determined to make her life better not wreck it. She proves to be a good role model just like her mother: look for opportunity. Keep your head up, not down. Don’t settle for safety. Push forward-you are not foolish to try. What a far cry from her father’s damning thoughts: Watch out, foolish

The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott. girl. Tess feels ashamed of working as a servant, an image of servitude when she is duped into accepting work in Cherbourg. She was a good seamstress and we see evidence of this when she starts working for the indomitable Lady Gordon Duff, a famous dress designer, the person she most admired in the world. Like many others, Tess is on the cusp of a new life filled with immense possibilities, a dream come true, a wonderful fantasy. Sailing on the Titanic with the famous and wealthy. Two infatuated men, one a rich American businessman, Jack Bremerton, the other a talented member of the crew, Jim Bonney who sweep her off her feet. Wonderful and then…the jolt, the slight bump followed by a sudden silence and the sadly ironical remark: We bumped into an iceberg but all is well. Bumping, scrambling, shouting. Suddenly there was an acrid, sweaty smell of human fear in the salt air. Children wailing. Panic everywhere. Desperation. Followed by the horrors that have been well-documented over the years. That this ruined people’s lives is an understatement and I mean for those who were lucky enough to survive. We are told that 706 survived out of a passenger list of 2,223 and that out of these 60% of the first-class passengers survived, most of them women. In steerage, it was 25%. In reality, the Duff Gordons and their secretary escaped in a lifeboat that could have held 40-50 people instead of 12. In The Dressmaker Alcott explores

how the couple were vilified by the press and people in both the USA and the UK. Lady Duff Gordon is subpoenaed to give a statement of what happened in Lifeboat One, contradicting Jim Bonney’s statement. There were crimes against humanity, moral crimes, tales of bribery and refusals to fill the boat and look for survivors. Marrying into the titled class. Gave her licence to be cold about people’s lives. And this is when Tess has to grow up, think for herself and decide on what she really wants out of life. Should she stand up, challenge and do what she wants to do OR should she be careful, be loyal and challenge nothing? Can she remain with her ideal, continue to admire and respect her after learning how self-absorbed, selfish and a bit careless the woman is? People choose whatever they want to believe and declare it true. What is the truth? Will anyone accept any liability for so many loss of lives? Our poor heroine is filled with so much uncertainty. How could she be sure of anything anymore? She has crucial decisions to make over her future with Lady Duff Gordon and her love life. Interestingly, her mother’s advice and her own common sense are pivotal in her decision making. She certainly is true to herself and full of hope not despair. She would be strong and not always too careful, not settle for a smaller life, and face what was true. As she walked through the streets of

Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel won the most awards on the night - a total of five including costume design, production design, make-up and original music; with Anderson winning his first Bafta for original screenplay. Jazz drumming drama Whiplash also took three awards - for editing, sound and supporting actor for JK Simmons, who thanked director Damien Chazelle for “the gift of this character”. World War Two drama The Imitation Game, with Benedict Cumberbatch as codebreaker Alan Turing, won nothing despite its nine nominations. Redmayne, who was the favourite to win best actor award, arrived on stage to roars of approval from the star-packed audience. He said of the Hawking family: “I want to thank them for their trust, their generosity and their kindness. “And for reminding me of the great strength that comes

from having the will to live a full and passionate life.” Best actor nominee Eddie Redmayne said he “poured his heart” into The Theory of Everything, when he tackled the role of Professor Stephen Hawking The Theory of Everything won the first award of the night - for outstanding British film - presented by David Beckham. Producer Eric Fellner gave “heartfelt thanks” to Professor Hawking and Jane Wilde Hawking, on whose book the film was based: “I hope you all feel we’ve done you proud.”

2015 BAFTA ROUND-UP Eddie Redmayne has scooped the best actor prize at the Bafta Film Awards for his role as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Redmayne said it was “one of the best nights of my life”. The film was also named outstanding British film and won a third award for its adapted screenplay. Coming of age drama Boyhood - shot over 12 years with the same cast - was named best film, with Richard Linklater picking up best director prize. Patricia Arquette also won the best supporting actress Bafta for her role in the film. The ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday night was hosted by Stephen Fry. Julianne Moore won the leading actress prize for her performance as a linguistics

Prof Hawking had earlier appeared on stage to present the award for special visual effects, alongside leading actress nominee Felicity Jones, which went to Christopher Nolan ‘s sci-fi epic Interstellar. Jones joked she was with the “only person on the planet more intelligent than Stephen Fry”. Prof Hawking responded: “Yes, and better looking.” This year’s Baftas didn’t deliver any major surprises but they do set up an an exciting battle for the Oscars in two weeks’ time. Will Boyhood repeat its British success and go on to take best picture in Hollywood? For the past six years the best film winner chosen by British Academy voters has gone on to win an Oscar. But the Baftas are international awards with a local twist and only some 20% of the US Academy is made up of Brits. Birdman may have only won a single Bafta for cinematography, but this weekend it took the top prize at the Director Guild Awards in the US, which have proved a very reliable indicator of Oscars success. Boyhood star Ellar Coltrane - who was cast in the film when he was aged six - was among the cast and crew who picked up the best film award from actor Tom Cruise. “The truth is, it didn’t feel like a movie, more like an exercise in collaboration and vulnerability,” he said. “To have this movie recognised alongside such grand pieces of art means life itself must be more exciting than we let on.” Best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette thanked Boyhood director Linklater, saying: “You broke the rules of cinema... and you made an ordinary story extraordinary.” Showbiz satire Birdman, staring Michael Keaton as a washed up superhero actor, took only one award - for Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography. Lubezki won the same prize last year for space thriller Gravity. bbc.com

not have a need for a pushchair probably all of the luggage would fit in the large boot. I am always impressed with the high quality of finish on every VW I have driven and this model is no different. The seats are comfortable and supportive, finished in a hardwearing fabric. I like the fact that the rear seats can be pulled forward by 180mm giving a larger boot space if required as you can see in the video at travelwriter.biz. That extends the load area from 500 litres to a 590 litres while folding the 40/20/40 split rear bench increases space to 1,520 litres allowing me to transport a washing machine to the tip and collect a load of logs. At times the SV does feel a little too large for comfort when driving, Calle Mallorca, San Javier notably when trying to reverse park. The 1.6 turbo diesel unit prefers not to travel at slower speeds especially in second or third gear.

When I was told I would be testing the Volkswagen Golf SV, I imagined it was the standard hatchback model. That is not the case though. The SV is a larger than life hatchback, more like the C-Max is to the Ford Focus. It’s larger and higher up in all the right places although it does look a little more van-like than its smaller hatchback relative. Outside the UK it is actually named Sportsvan and is in fact the direct replacement for the Golf Plus. VW sold over 900,000 of these and in Germany the Plus accounted for 20 per cent of all Golf registrations. A trip to Kent puts it through its paces. To start, it has to contend with all the usual

It really does need a boot to deliver good p e r f o r m a n c e. In common with most diesels it does need a bit of welly to get going but this is all part of the diesel experience and the frugal amongst us will not mind when we see that despite travelling at 70mph it still returns over 50mpg. In these days of six and seven speed manual gearboxes some might expect something a bit grander than the five speed unit but it is typical VW, smooth and reliable. Being higher up than a standard hatchback provides the driver with a better view of the road ahead and allows me to overtake a slow moving vehicle where I would otherwise be unable to in a lower car. “Longer, wider, taller and more spacious than the hatchback it’s based on, the new Volkswagen Golf SV is the perfect antidote for growing families no longer able to squeeze into the firm’s regular hatchback,” writes Parkers, the car experts. “The boot’s almost as big as the Estate model and there’s extra passenger room all round thanks to a wheelbase 48mm longer than the hatch it’s based on. It may not have proved quite so popular here, but plenty were still captivated by the extra space and flexibility offered, and it only gets more practical in the latest incarnation.” Overall, while there is a feeling of quality and robustness about the vehicle one cannot help feeling that it is lacking some useful features that would be really appreciated. 2014 onwards - New price range: £19,075 - £27,015 - Used price range: £14,437 - £24,696 - Top speed: 119mph 0-60mph: 10.9secs, Power: 108bhp, Economy: up to 72mpg - Watch the video at www.testdrives. biz By Tim Saunders

Lorca Does Badgers Proud On Wednesday 28th January Lorca Golf Resort hosted Badgers Golf Society for their weekly Stableford competition. From the welcoming bacon sandwiches on the arrival by coach to the awards ceremony at the end of the day the Lorca Golf management team provided excellent support. 36 players took part, and our coach also provided transport for 15 non-playing wives who attacked the shops in Lorca town. Making the most of the splendid course conditions was Derek Leary, who claimed top spot with 37 points. Second place went to Tony Rowbottom on 34. Doing their best to hog all the prizes both Derek and Tony picked up Nearest The Pin awards. New member Dave Ryder took third place on 33 and

The visitors downed Córdoba 1-2 and escaped the drop zone in matchday 22 of Liga BBVA. UD Almería recorded a second successive win in Liga BBVA after a Míchel Macedo brace saw them down Córdoba C 1-2. Fede Cartabia had put the home side ahead in the first half. Córdoba came out of the blocks fast, with both the statistics and the scoreboard attesting to their intensity. After only 10 minutes of play Fede Cartabia scored a fantastic free-kick to put them ahead. From then on, the home side continued to dominate, causing problems for Julián Cuesta in Almería’s goal, however luck was against them, and they led only 1-0 at half time. Everything changed after the break. Almería changed tack, and they were able to turn the game on its head with a five-minute Míchel Macedo double. This result gives the visitors their second win on the spin, leaving them in 15th, while Córdoba fall into the drop zone. lfp.es
