3 generations die in Germanwings crash
From a lush suburban valley near bustling Barcelona, three generations of a wellheeled family set off last week for a fun trip to Manchester, England: 12-year-old Emma Solera Pardo, her mother Emma Pardo Vidal, and grandmother Emma Vidal Bardan. They were on their way to pick up the youngest Emma’s teen brother as he finished a semester abroad to hone his English, do some sightseeing and then head home together. But the Germanwings flight 9525 taking them to Duesseldorf for a connecting flight to Britain slammed into the French Alps. Prosecutors say co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the pilot out of the cockpit and aimed the aircraft down in an eightminute descent until it hit the ground and disintegrated. Juan Pardo Yanez, little Emma’s grandfather, the father of her mother and the former husband of the eldest Emma, was virtually speechless after returning from a trip for relatives of the 150 crash victims to the accident zone in Seyne-LesAlpes, France, where investigators working in a ravine were collecting small pieces of the plane and body parts ahead of a painstaking identification effort. “There is nothing that can be done or could be said to me to change the loss of these three so dearly loved ones,” Pardo Yanez told The Associated Press and other journalists outside a Barcelona crisis center set up for victims’ relatives. About 400 friends and relatives of the daughter, mother and grandmother gathered for a private Mass at a monastery in Sant Cugat del Valles, choking up as
they went inside to commemorate those lost from the family that moved to the community of about 85,000 about a decade ago. The youngest Emma’s father, Juan Ignacio Solera, is the founder and chief executive of iVOOX, a company that makes a popular software application for podcast downloads. Emma went to a Catholic school just a five-minute walk away from the family’s apartment in a cluster of buildings ringed by high brick walls. Her death hit classmates incredibly hard, said principal Maria Reina Montoro, who could only come up with one word to describe how they felt: “Destroyed.”

While somewhat quiet and timid, the youngest Emma was a dedicated tennis player who regularly practised at a club, said Manu Navas, director of the club’s tennis academy. Emma’s mother also played paddle tennis there. “She wasn’t a player who stood out, but what I would highlight about her was her attitude. She never took no for an answer,” Navas said of the girl. Pardo Yanez didn’t say how he would try to help rebuild his life and family now that his ex-wife is gone along with one of his daughters and a granddaughter. But he was sure of one thing: “I will return with all my children to the site where all of them have died.” Afp

Killer Sharks on the Costas but tourist bosses keep it quiet
Three were found washed up on the shore of the popular resort last month. The two sinister-looking threshers and a threemetre bluntnose sixgill shark had been caught in fi shing nets. But locals think tourism bosses are trying to keep it quiet as thousands of holidaymakers are due to arrive for the holiday. Last year saw a string of spinner shark sightings near Benidorm’s main beach. A local said: “It’s not unusual for sharks to be spotted every now and then. But three in the space of a few days is a worry. “Offi cials might say they’re not dangerous species but threemetre sharks swimming around a popular tourist beach isn’t exactly good news. “It has defi nitely made people think twice about taking a dip. “The whole thing seems to have been swept under the rug.” Locals also claim resort bosses have tried to hush up the deployment of shark nets at the town’s beaches. Another resident said: “Benidorm has offshore shark netting in place all along its four beach areas and beyond, although it chooses not to advertise this fact. “There are 15 potentially
dangerous sharks in the Mediterranean, out of approximately 46 different species. “Obviously the tourist boards in the area prefer it to be kept quiet. Knowing there are likely to be sharks where you are bathing with your family in the Mediterranean is not conducive to encouraging tourism.” Last year an 11-year-old boy needed 30 stitches after he was attacked by a blue shark further up the Costa Blanca coast in Salou. Thresher sharks have been responsible for dozens of attacks on boats and there has been a reported attack on a human in the past. Spinner sharks and blue sharks have carried out a handful of attacks on people. Last summer, the authorities in France and Spain issued an alert after a surge in the number of blue sharks spotted. dailystar.co.uk

BRITISH AND EU CITIZENS RECOVER THEIR MONEY BACK FROM SPANISH TAX OFFICE
EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE (ECJ) RULED SPANISH INHERITANCE LAWS WERE ILLEGAL AGAINST NON SPANISH RESIDENTS.
• In September 2014 the European Court of Justice passed a Judgment declaring the Spanish inheritance tax laws as discriminatory towards non-residents and against the EU Treaty. • Now, at least for Spanish Legal Reclaims S.L. (an EU tax specialized law firm), claimants are successfully receiving their money back from the Spanish Tax Authorities (100% success rate). • Average refund size currently stands at €25,000. However as many as 100,000 Britons could be affected and entitled to reclaim. • Other European citizens affected canalso come forward to make a claim On Sept. 3rd, 2014, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that the Spanish Inheritance laws are discriminatory contravening European Union Treaty as Spanish non-residents were paying up to 34% of the inheritance value and residents were paying virtually nothing. An action group called Spanish Legal Reclaims (SLR) recently launched a dedicated website to inform possible claimants how to file a claim www.spanishlegalreclaims.com. Spanish Legal Reclaims legal team recently won against the Spanish State in a similar case before the Spanish and European Courts, as Spanish legislation regarding Capital Gains Tax was also discriminating against non-residents. The team led by Mr. Luis Cuervo helped 1,000´s of clients recover the overcharged taxes they paid in Capital Gains Tax and they are now successfully recovering the inheritance tax for non-Spanish residents. Mr. Luis Cuervo, CEO at SLR states “Despite the opinion of many professionals, once again, we were right predicting that the ECJ’s ruling would be positive, but the most important fact is that, as we started to file claims 2 years ago before the ECJ’s ruling, we have already started to receive the refunds for our first 25 clients three weeks ago (100% success rate). All our other clients should start to

receive their refunds soon. This is very important as succeeding in this kind of claim is not easy and it is clear now that our precise strategy, procedure, and legal arguments are correct.Potential claimants must be aware that this is not an ordinary reclaim. Facing a legal procedure like this requires not only expertise but also deep analysis, a clear legal strategy and experience in similar claims. As anyone who has been affected by this illegal tax can only claim once, we strongly recommend that file their claims with an experienced expert in EU tax law. If for some reason they fail by using an un-experienced lawyer in reclaims they will not get a second chance to file again”. Mr. Cuervo added, “Once the claim is filed, people affected could recover their money within 6-8 months, with up to 4% compound interest. We offer our clients a No Win – No Fee agreement”. Since we started this reclaim about 1,000 UK/EU families have already come forward to file their claims with us. After the ECJ Ruling those figures will expand greatly. Many Spanish and UK/EU lawyers are cooperating with us to help their own clients, once they understand the legal process requiresdeep analysis and expertise not only in domestic tax but also EU regulations and court procedures. The cases must be won one by one. We urge anyone else who believes they have been affected by this tax discrimination to come forward. Taking quick action is important as the right to make a reclaim may expire due to legal time limits for making a tax reclaim in Spain.” For more information, and details of how to register your interest, visit: www.spanishlegalreclaims.com Spanish Legal Reclaims Helpline : UK 0845 680 3849 +34 936 804 563 Email Enquiries: info@spanishlegalreclaims.com

Australian official ‘accidentally’ reveals details of world leaders
Australian officials accidentally passed on personal details of world leaders including US President Barack Obama, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping and Britain’s David Cameron in an embarrassing bungle following Australia’s hosting of a G20 summit last year. The department of immigration and border protection has admitted to the breach, in which an employee apparently sent the passport numbers and visa details of all 31 leaders at the summit in November to the organisers of an unrelated Asian Cup football tournament which was held in Australia two months later. According to a departmental letter, which was released under freedom of information laws and published by The Guardian, an official “accidentally sent” the private details in an email to a football tournament employee. “[The official] failed to check that the autofill function in Microsoft Outlook had entered the correct person’s details into the email ‘To’ field”,” the letter says.
“This led to the email being sent to the wrong person. It is unlikely that the information is in the public domain.” The person who received the email apparently informed the official of the breach within ten minutes and claimed to have deleted it. The incident was described as an “isolated error”. Australia reportedly failed to notify other countries of the breach but informed its own “information commissioner”. The G20 summit in Brisbane was attended by the heads of the world’s biggest economies, including the leaders of India, Japan, France, Indonesia, Canada and Saudi Arabia. Australia spent millions of dollars on security for the summit and put central Brisbane into a lockdown. The departmental letter says the personal information breached included “the name, date of birth, title, position nationality, passport number, visa grant number and visa subclass held relating to 31 international leaders (ie prime ministers, presidents and their equivalents) attending the G20 leaders summit”. The immigration department said in a statement provided to The Telegraph: “The data was immediately deleted by the recipient and was not distributed further. The department has reviewed and strengthened its email protocols to limit and contain future breaches.” Bbc.com

To protect the floors in your kitchen from another year of wear and tear, wax or apply a sealer following label directions. The simplest method: Use a combination wash-and-wax floor cleaner. Don’t feel guilty about saving time! No-wax floors don’t need a polishing treatment, but an occasional makeover will keep them looking fresher—and add a protective buffer that could help them last longer. Use a floor cleaner that cleans, shines, or both. It’s best to follow label directions for proper use of each product. If you have wood floors, move furniture and rugs aside, then apply a wood cleaner and either liquid or paste polish to clean and add a new wax coating.Wash walls, cabinets, baseboards, and woodwork.
Vacuum with intelligence.
The old rules mandated that you go through the labor-intensive task of dragging every stick of furniture off the carpet, just so the vacuum cleaner could cover every nook and cranny. Check your coils.
You should clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil, usually found behind the toe grille, with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint. Built-up dust can shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. To remove dust from coils attached to the hard-to-reach back side of the fridge, carefully pull the refrigerator out several feet (newer models roll on casters) and vacuum thoroughly; finish by sweeping or vacuuming the floor area you’ve revealed. HAPPY EASTER
ist’s resurrection Easter, which celebrates Jesus Chr t important from the dead, is Christianity’s mos eable feast because holiday. It has been called a mov year, as most it doesn’t fall on a set date every rches in the West holidays do. Instead, Christian chu following the celebrate Easter on the first Sunday on March 21. full moon after the vernal equinox where between Therefore, Easter is observed any Orthodox March 22 and April 25 every year. r to calculate when Christians use the Julian calenda brate the holiday Easter will occur and typically cele churches, which a week or two after the Western follow the Gregorian calendar. The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English. In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), the Jewish festival commemorating the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Pascha eventually came to mean Easter. Easter is really an entire season of the Christian church year, as opposed to a single-day observance. Lent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday, is a time of reflection and penance and represents the 40 days that Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry, a time in which Christians believe he survived various temptations by the devil. The day before Lent, known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is a last hurrah of food and fun before the fasting begins. The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week and includes Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus’ last supper with his disciples; Good Friday, which honors the day of his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which focuses on the transition between the crucifixion and resurrection. The 50-day period following Easter Sunday is called Eastertide and includes a celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven.
In addition to Easter’s religious significance, it also has a commercial side, as evidenced by the mounds of jelly beans and marshmallow chicks that appear in stores each spring. As with Christmas, over the centuries various folk customs and pagan traditions, including Easter eggs, bunnies, baskets and candy, have become a standard part of this holy holiday.
pause for thought
Semana Santa, or Holy Week! A major Christian festival, which culminates on Friday as we celebrate the abhorrent death of Jesus, whose only crime had been to undermine the authority of the religious leaders of his day, by asserting that you didn’t need a priest to intervene on your behalf as God was freely available to anyone who approaches Him in faith. Yes, it may seem strange to celebrate such an apparent disaster, but we Christians do indeed celebrate Good Friday, as, tragic though it may have been, we see that death of so perfect a man as having been in our place, so saving us from ever having to face the just and reasonable consequences of our own wrongdoings. And that really is something to celebrate in absolute gratitude. But greater still should be our celebrations on Sunday. For on Easter Day his extremely well guarded grave was found to be empty. Numerous reliable witnesses reported having met that same Jesus alive and well three days after his death! Cranks? Well, very strange if so; for all his followers, who’d previously been so timid, afraid almost of their own shadows, suddenly changed, and being absolutely convinced that he’d been raised from the dead, spoke out fearlessly,
facing death rather than consider any possibility that they were mistaken. And if they were wrong, then surely the Authorities who’d secured his death would have produced his body to quash the rumours – but they didn’t, simply because they couldn’t; his body just wasn’t there, as he had indeed risen. And this is perhaps the most difficult, most challenging and yet most thrilling aspect of the Christian faith. We serve a Risen Saviour, not a dead martyr. Our faith is founded on acceptance, however difficult, of this incredible fact. And as St Paul affirmed in his letter to the Church in Thessalonica; just as Jesus came back to life, so we, who believe in him, will also, in due time have our bodies recreated to live with him in renewed Heaven and Earth. You are close to the mountains of Sierra de Gádor. You could easily ski or snowboard at Sierra Nevada in the morning and be on the beach for the afternoon – not many places can offer that variety! The marina has 1,100 berths. You can take boat trips and also go diving, sailing, windsurf and fishing. With over 13km of wide sandy beaches you can truly have a relaxing beach holiday with everything you need within walking distance. This is a great area if you like nature and walking and hiking. There are also stables nearby so you can go horseriding. Head west to see the Castillo (castle) Guardias Viejas. Just an hour’s drive away you can visit the famous “Cabo de Gata” reserve with some amazing remote beaches, perfect some nude sunbathing. Just 30 minutes drive gets you to Almeria city with it’s historic castle, cathedral and shops. The magnificent city of Granada with its historic district and Alhambra Palace is 90 minutes drive away.

Avda Lepanto Esquina Calle Asturias, Albox Tel: 666 020 797 Facilities Albox is a traditional white-washed Spanish market town with a population of around 11,000 inhabitants, of which a small percentage are foreign ex-pat residents. The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. You will find most locals frequenting the pool during the weekends and summer holidays. It opens throughout July and August. There is also a sports centre and tennis club, which also has its own swimming pool. The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. The origens of Albox date back to Medieval times when the ancient fort town was located on a hill nearby to its current location. In 1503 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake and most of its historical buildings were lost. The town was reconstructed from scratch in its current location. Market Town A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) can be found hanging from stalls and shop windows; dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage) and many more delicacies are on show. LEGAL CORNER Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last week we discussed the idea of storing your important information on a server. We considered what you needed to build one and how you might set it up. Although I haven’t had any emails from irate techo-geeks about how many security holes where left open, something that I’ll happily admit to and there were a number of whoppers there. The idea of the article, as is with so many of them, is to get you, the thinking, inquiring reader to think, to inquire and to ask questions, while making it non-technical for the nontechnically minded. One day I will give a complete demonstration, probably at Jack’s Bar, on the correct way to set up a data / printer server from an old computer and include all the necessary security steps to make sure that it is safe from ‘preying eyes’! Today’s article is about the eagerly awaited Windows 10. We have covered this issue before with the upshot that it will probably be the best product since Windows XP. As mentioned before, I am one of the many people “beta-testing” and highlighting the flaws and reporting them to Microsoft so that they will be able to correct them. I also think that it will be the best thing since XP (which in truth won’t be that difficult)!
WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
summer!). Now, are you sitting comfortably? Good! Unless Microsoft ask ridiculous money for the license of Windows 10 (remembering that you never own your copy! You only lease the single license for a single copy) then I will be willing to pay for the licence! There, I’ve said it and I can’t go back on it! Or maybe I can? The rumour is that although the Operating System will be a free upgrade, for you, the forever paying public, will be lumbered with ‘Subscriptions’. Rumour also suggests that everything that Microsoft can get control over, will be paid for by subscription. That means, constant weekly, monthly or annual revenue, will be required to run anything that Microsoft controls! For example. Their award winning office suite, their route planning package and many more will have a constant price tag attached. These are, for now, only rumours but if true will erode your right to run whatever software you want on your machine. BUT if these rumours turn out to be nonsense, then we are entering an age of cooperative enlightenment where the freethinking people in the 1970’s, who were the forerunners of the computer age, will be proven to have been right. Now where did I put my psychotic delusion medication? Contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below.
Microsoft have said that for the first 12 months anyone running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the Windows 10 flagship for FREE and gratis. Even if you have a ‘dodgy’ copy of windows, you will still be able to upgrade! Having said that, it will still be a dodgy copy and you will need to obtain a license for it. If you’re like me and loathed to get rid of our beloved XP, there is absolutely no news that we will be allowed to update unless we pay for it. So, when will it be released? According to the latest estimates from Microsoft, they are ahead of schedule and will For further information or advice on PROBABLY be releasing it in computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or the summer (although, here canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk in Spain, we do have a long
April fool’s
Back in 1698; a number of unsuspecting innocents were sent along to the Moat at the Tower of London to watch the washing of the lions. Of course there were no lions and certainly none being washed. This is the earliest recorded April fool’s prank. For many years after, people were still taken in when told of the annual lion washing ceremony at The Tower. Even 200 years later official looking tickets were left around London inviting people to the annual event. In 1950 Norwegians were taken in by a front page story claiming that the Norwegian wine monopoly had run out of bottles and so were offering wine at 75% discount as long as buyers could be outside the store at 10am April 1st with buckets to take the wine home in. Long queues formed but needless to say there was no wine. The Daily Wail in 1981 ran a story about an unfortunate Japanese marathon runner who due to a translation error; was still running around Britain as he thought he had to run for 26 days rather than 26 miles. They reported that people had tried to stop him but he was determined to finish. The supposed translator apologised in the article and said he had only been learning Japanese

7 things to keep in mind about Spanish wills 1. Do not underestimate the importance of signing one. 2. If you already have one, make sure it complies with new European Directive 650/2012 which comes into force 17th of August. If you are no certain , speak to your solicitor. 3. Make sure it protects the people you care about correctly (second wife versus children from first marriage etc.). For example: if you leave everything to your new wife , she could leave your children out of your estate after you have deceased. It is possible to avoid this risk. 4. Makes sure the will makes maximum use of the exemptions available in each region
of Spain. 5. Take into account that since the sentence of the European court of justice of September of last year the same exemption rates can be claimed by non residents so your existing will may not have taken this into account. 6. Make sensible use of Life Possessions as an instrument to both mitigate inheritance tax and protect spouse versus children from other marriages, while awarding the security of not being left out of their inheritance after your death. 7. Be aware that in some regions of Spain exemption rates have been reduced or abolished during the credit crunch (for example in Murcia Group II heirs ), making it important to reassess your inheritance tax planning.

for a couple of years. During the Cold War in 1984; when the internet was just a simple messaging system a company called Usenet announced that the Soviet Union was joining the online community as they wanted to discuss important issues with Europeans and Americans. Usenet even set up a fake account chernenko@kremvax.UUCP named after the then General Secretary. Six years later when they really did join the internet, Moscow took the domain name kremvax in recognition of the hoax. Soldier Magazine in April 1980 ran a story about the Bearskin hats that the Irish Guards wore at Buckingham Palace. The claimed that due to the thickness of the bearskin there was enough minerals left in the skins to keep it growing. So the guards had to have a regular trim. The Daily Express picked up the story and ran it not realising they had been had as well. In 2010 ThinkGeek an online retailer marketed Unicorn Meat with the tag that it was the new white meat with high sparkle content. The joke worked so well that Think Geek actually produced cans to
fulfil orders that contained a stuffed toy unicorn. In Germany nobody received their orders as German Custom officers confiscated the cans as they contained meat from an endangered species. April 1st 1980 the BBC World Service announced that Big Ben was getting a digital readout installed to make it more accurate. Furthermore the redundant hands would be given away to the first four callers. The prank caused upset across the world as angry listeners contacted the BBC to complain about the upgrade. In 1991 The London Times newspaper ran a piece saying the Department of Transport had worked out that by turning the M25 into one way only on weekdays; traffic jams would disappear. Mondays Wednesday and Fridays would be clockwise and Tuesday and Thursdays anticlockwise. BBC Radio News picked up on the story and ran it as a news item and irate listeners rang in to complain about the scheme. Unicorns are a popular source of trickery and in 2012 the British Library announced it had discovered a 14th Century cook book with a recipe for
cooking the mythical beast. The book was by Geoffrey Fule and the recipe started with the words ‘taketh one unicorne.’ Then it was to be marinated in garlic and cloves then roasted. Lastly from 1957 is my favourite April fool’s; the Swiss spaghetti tree harvest. BBC Panorama reported that the harvest was going to be a bumper one in Switzerland as the spaghetti weevil had almost been eradicated and the Spring weather had been mild. The film accompanying the report was so well done that lots of people contacted the Beeb to ask where they could buy a spaghetti tree. The BBC advised people to stick a sprig of spaghetti into a can of tomatoes and hope for the best!

Star Wars’ Tatooine sunsets ‘may be widespread’ in universe
Earth-like planets with two suns, resembling Tatooine in Star Wars, may be widespread, scientists believe. In the movie, Luke Skywalker’s home world had twin sunsets because it orbited a pair of stars. So far, scientists have only identified uninhabitable gas-giant planets in orbit around binary stars. But new computer simulations show that solid, Earth-like planets such as Tatooine are not only theoretically possible but may exist in large numbers. US astrophysicists Ben Bromley and Scott Kenyon conclude in their study: “Tatooine sunsets may be common after all. “Our main result is that outside a small region near a binary star, (either rocky or gas-giant) planet formation can proceed in much the same was as around a single star. In our scenario, planets are as prevalent around binaries as around single stars.” The research shows how binary stars – pairs of stars bound together by
gravitational force – can be orbited by asteroid-sized rocks that clump together to form planets. D r Bromley, from the University of Utah, said: “It is just as easy to make an Earthlike planet around a binary star as it is around a single star like our sun. So we think that Tatooines may be common in the universe. “An Earth-like Tatooine would have no problem forming right where it needs to be to host life.” Previously many experts doubted that Earth-like rocky planets could form around binary stars. The problem was that asteroids, or planetesimals, need to merge gently in order to grow. Those orbiting pairs of stars were thought to follow tangled paths that caused them to smash together destructively. But the new study shows that the asteroids are likely to settle into oval, not circular, orbits which helps prevent such fatal collisions. The American space agency Nasa’s Kepler space telescope has discovered
more than 1,000 planets outside our solar system, including rocky worlds in the “habitable zone” not too close or far away from their host stars. Within the habitable zone, temperatures are mild enough to permit liquid surface water and, possibly, Earth-like life. Seven planets have been found orbiting within or near the habitable zone around binary stars, but all are gas giants similar to Jupiter. However this may only be because small, rocky planets are so much harder to spot that giant gaseous ones, according to Dr Bromley. The study appears on the scientific pre-print website ArXiv and has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal for review. westernmorningnews.co.uk

The Dastardly Plan
Rodriquez aimed to put Remitroot in all its forms out of the reach of Alquerians, thereby causing deep discontent. This would, he hoped reflect on the government, cause a vote of ‘no confidence’ and result in another election which this time he would take the trouble to ‘rig’. The question was how? Antonio Poyato owned the smallholding where Remitroot grew and he wasn’t about to relinquish control of his precious crop. Rodriquez searched for Poyato’s weakness. Everyone knew Poyato was addicted to his own crop. He not only consumed Remitroot Whisky, wine and beer but also ate the stuff, wore it and used it to fill the cracks in his fast decaying farmhouse. Rodriquez decided to ‘hoist him with his own petard ‘ an act guaranteed to bring tears to the eyes of all but the hardiest. Rodriquez would get the crop by guile while Poyato was in his ‘cups’ during his Friday night Remitroot drinking bout at the Bar La Casa Devante. His ploy was to disguise himself as an itinerant Venezuelan Hamster Stuffer and engage Poyato in conversation. Poyato would be too far gone to see through the plasticine and cling-film disguise and would probably think the overall effect was due to some nasty skin complaint. Rodriquez was an aficionado of the ancient Alquerian board game of ‘Stckitupemdoo’ and could cheat like a politician filing an expenses claim. Poyato however thought the game was something to do with charting hormonal cycles. Rodriquez alias the Venezuelan Hamster Stuffer suggested a game and the board was duly laid out. During the boom years of the eighties fortunes had been won and lost at the
Stckitupemdoo tables. Rodriquez was a master but to be on the safe side he used a weighted dice and applied honey to the base of his counters, an old but effective ploy. As the game progressed the green Alquerian bank notes piled up in the centre of the table. Spectators and players alike spoke only in hushed tones. Beads of perspiration ran down Poyato’s forehead. He soon had to sign promissory notes or forfeit the game. Poyato had staked all on the outcome of a single game. He had pledged the precious deeds to the Remitroot fields and processing plant against Rodriquez’s crisp bank notes. A slimy smile crossed the evil countenance of Rodriquez. He played his hand, a ‘Stuffittoemall’ the unbeatable one. Poyato was broken, Rodriquez jubilant. Those who watched the game and its outcome were oblivious to the awful truth. Remitroot and therefore Alqueria was in the hands of the most hated man in the Village, Rodriquez.
how?
It was dark and raining hard, but the party was going great in the Village Hall, right at the top of the hill. I needed to pick up my birthday cake, so I dragged Pete away from his new best friend, the teenage leader of the pop group playing the Hall, and together we proceeded along the corridor that linked it with the florists. As we entered the flower shop it was a lovely sunny day. My cake was handed to me on one of those round cardboard pretend plates. Knowing how floppy and slidey these plates are I took it very carefully in both hands – I was terrified of dropping its cargo of Choco-Mocca deliciousness and carried it gingerly and with extreme caution out of the shop. It was still a lovely warm sunny day in the valley bottom as somebody took my horse from me - I was intent on balancing the cake on its perilous plate, and had no spare hands for horses. The barn was supported on staddle stones, those stone mushrooms used to raise buildings out of the reach of floods and vermin. Being raised off the ground the barn could only be accessed by a set of wooden steps and a door at the top. As I began my journey across the grassy yard I could already taste the cake; all I had to do was get it across the yard, up the steps and through the door. Concentrating with every fibre of my being I began my ascent of the steps. I reached the top, now all I had to do was open the door. This is where it got complicated. I had the cake, which was threatening to slide
By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk off the plate at the slightest excuse, in both hands. The two cats were around my feet, determined to get into the barn. The dog, which was inside the barn, was determined to get out. Somehow I had to get the door open, myself and the cake inside while the cats remained outside and the dog remained inside. The doorknob was the round sort, which needs turning. I jammed it between my hip and my elbow and wriggled, daring the cake to slide off its plate. I stood on one leg, holding my foot ready to repel ingress and egress of animals. Then I woke up, so I don’t know whether the cake and I made it inside. But how the heck did I manage to get on and off the horse while carrying a cake on a cardboard plate?

The histo ry of
Easter egg s humbugs cafe
Easter falls in the spring, the yearly time of renewal, when the earth renews itself after a long, cold winter. The word Easter comes to us from the Norsemen's Eostur, Eastar, Ostara, and Ostar, and the pagan goddess Eostre, all of which involve the season of the growing sun and new birth. The Easter Bunny arose originally as a symbol of fertility, due to the rapid reproduction habits of the hare and rabbit. The ancient Egyptians, Persians, Phoenicians, and Hindus all believed the world began with an enormous egg, thus the egg as a symbol of new life has been around for eons. The particulars may vary, but most cultures around the world use the egg as a symbol of new life and rebirth. A notation in the household accounts of Edward I of England showed an expenditure of eighteen pence for 450 eggs to be gold-leafed and colored for Easter gifts. The first book to mention Easter eggs by name was written

five hundred years ago. Yet, a North African tribe that had become Christian much earlier in time had a custom of coloring eggs at Easter. Long hard winters often meant little food, and a fresh egg for Easter was quite a prize. Later, Christians abstained from eating meat during the Lenten season prior to Easter. Easter was the first chance to enjoy eggs and meat Some European children go from house to house begging for Easter eggs, much like Halloween trick-or-treaters. Called paceegging, it comes from the old word for Easter, Pasch. Many old cultures also attributed the egg with great healing powers. Egg-rolling contests are a symbolic re-enactment of the rolling away of the stone from Christ's tomb. The decoration of small leaf-barren branches as Easter egg trees has become a popular custom in the United States since the 1990s. Source: http://homecooking.about.com/
easter eggs
“If you want to wow your family with extra special Easter eggs, this is the recipe for you! These are peanut butter and coconut cream eggs dipped in chocolate. They are both delicious and beautiful!”
Ingredients 2 pounds confectioners’ sugar 1/4 pound margarine, softened 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 12 ounces peanut butter 1 pound flaked coconut 4 cups semisweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons shortening Method In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, margarine, cream cheese and vanilla extract. Divide the batter in half and place each half of the batter in a bowl on its own. Stir peanut butter into one of the bowls and coconut into the second. Using your hands, mold the dough into eggshapes and arrange the
forms on cookie sheets. Place the eggs in the freezer until frozen. Once the eggs have frozen, melt the chocolate and shortening in the top of a double-boiler. Dip the eggs into the chocolate until coated. Place the eggs on wax paper lined cookie sheets and return to the freezer to harden. After the chocolate has hardened the eggs can be kept in the refrigerator. http://allrecipes.com/

Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. Book Review
Book Review
“Novels gave you a completely false idea about life, they told lies and they implied there were endings when in reality there were no endings, everything just went on and on and on.” These apparently disparate case histories cover 1970, 1994 and 1979 involving girls who had either been murdered or had simply vanished into thin air. Private Investigator, Jackson Brodie, beautifully drawn but flawed through and through had spent 12 years in the Cambridgeshire Constabulary and before that the military police. Forty-five years of age and working on irksome or dull cases like Binky Rain and her missing cats when he becomes inundated with requests to solve three case histories of people who have been seriously damaged by crimes committed against their loved ones. “He was used to being a voyeur, the outsider looking in, and nothing, but nothing that anyone did surprised him anymore.” There is a fourth case history: 1971 Holy Girls which is personal to Jackson and involves the unsolved murder of his big sister Niamh who was 16 at the time. It was believed she was abducted, raped, strangled and then dumped in the canal. Her death weighed heavily with brother Francis who was 18 at the time and he never got over her brutal killing. He killed himself and it was 12 year old Jackson who found him hanging. Two tragedies in a short space of time. The case histories contain dark subject matter of death, despair, abuse and thwarted love but end with a sense of hope and happiness you’ll be pleased to note. In two cases there is closure, a sense of relief. Considering the time scale that is more than the clients probably expected. Jackson is an exceptional investigator and risks life and limb to find out answers in order to solve the crimes. In Family Plot Rosemary, married at 18 to a man twice her age, is expecting her fifth child and hasn’t time or energy for her four daughters who seem to run wild. Sylvia, the strangest of the girls is 13, has developed an unhealthy obsession with religion, then there is Amelia, Julia and 3 year old Olivia, the beautiful child who everyone adores. The marriage is loveless, Victor is a mathematician and he locks himself away in his study and detests his daughters. Rosemary detests him and has little maternal affection for
her three eldest daughters with the exception of Olivia, her child spun from light. “Sometimes she wanted to eat Olivia, to bite into a tender forearm or a soft calf muscle, even to devour her whole like a snake and take her back inside her where she would be safe.” The tragedy happened one hot summer. Rosemary had refused to let her daughters sleep outside in the tent, then felt guilty about her “most forgotten child” Amelia and she told her she could sleep outside with Olivia. Rascal the family dog and Blue Mouse her pet toy accompanied them. The following day Amelia woke up and Olivia and Blue Mouse had gone. That was in 1970. Following the death of Victor at the age of 84 Julia finds Blue Mouse and suspects foul play. Amelia, too, is desperate to resolve the case, still hopeful that Olivia had perhaps been abducted and is still alive. The investigation unearths vile details of their appalling childhood and their sexual abuse which partly explains why Amelia is unstable and suicidal with her “meaningless little life.” Case Histories 2. Just a Normal Day. But it wasn’t normal. Theo is a solicitor regarded as being “morbidly obese.” His wife Valerie died when she was 34 and he was left to bring up his two daughters on his own. Laura his youngest daughter is still at home but almost on the point of going to Aberdeen university. She adores her father and the feeling is reciprocated. “Theo loved {her} with a strength that was like a cataclysm, a disaster.” During the summer, Laura worked in a bar until Theo suggested she could do some temping for his law firm. On her first day, a knife-wielding maniac attacked one of the partners, David Holroyd and carved through Laura’s carotid artery. She was “felled in her tracks, like an animal, like a deer.” Theo had been in court that morning but returned to the office to witness the carnage and his daughter, Laura bleeding to death. He never recovered. Ten years later, a broken Theo, now retired turns up in Jackson’s office wanting closure. From his own bereavement and counselling Jackson knows there were stages you went through: “shock, denial, guilt, anger, depression-and then acceptance.” Theo, he believed, was stuck somewhere near the beginning-even after 10 years. “What did you do when the worst thing that could
happen to you had already happened-how did you live your life then?” Everything from Duty Nothing from Love is the third one. Like Rosemary, Michelle is another teenage mother, saddled with a husband and child at 18 years of age. “She hadn’t bonded with the baby, instead she was shackled by it.” I suppose in her own way she loved them both although she had sacrificed her education and a promising future. She became so meticulous about organising her pathetic and unhappy life that she was regarded by her sister Shirley as a control freak. Once she lost control she became neurotic and aggressive. A violent row with Keith one day and a screaming baby and she lost it. she grabbed the axe and attacked her husband, killing him. She asked her sister to look after the “bug” knowing that she would be put away for life. Jackson gets involved in this case when Shirley asks him to find Tanya. At this point we learn that Michelle has been released and adopted a new identity. Jackson breaks the ethical code by sleeping with Shirley but the more he gets to know her the more his instincts tell him that something is not quite right. He has a bad feeling about her. “Was she a good liar or was she just good at avoiding the truth?” Eventually the truth rears its ugly head and we discover how Keith died and more importantly who killed him. We are told that “anyone’s capable of killing, given the right circumstances.” Binky Rain’s demonic nephew, Quintus Rain seems determined to murder Jackson, then there’s Caroline who is desperate to turn the clock back and start again: “one lost lamb.” Lily-Rose is the homeless girl with yellow hair and a dog who keeps cropping up all over the place searching for something. And there’s creepy Stuart Lappin and perverted Stan Jessop. Plenty to keep you interested. I’ll leave you with one of Jackson’s gems: “ The only time you were safe was when you were dead.” A superb crime thriller. Publisher: Black Swan. Man Utd’s Mata not giving up on playing for Spain again
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has not given up hope of playing for Spain again. The 26-year-old has not featured for La Roja since a 3-0 triumph over Australia in Spain’s final group game at last year’s World Cup in Brazil. Mata, who has scored 10 goals in 34 appearances since making his Spain debut six years ago, wrote on his blog: “Many of you are asking me these days about the Spanish national team. “As I always say, I have been very lucky to play and to win a World Cup and a European Championship, to participate in the most important competitions,
but I’m still excited as the first day. “I am convinced that I’m in a perfect age in my football career and I look forward to keep contributing and achieving more success with my national team. “That’s what I work for every day, training and playing to the maximum, trying to do the best I can. “After that, obviously, the manager is the one who picks the players for every game. “So now I take these quiet days to keep working, as I said, but I also switch off and rest a bit.” bbc.com
Walking Football 16th Game And so we face the final kick-off........... There was a little confusion today as some of the players had forgotten to change their clocks to British Summertime. Consequently a few turned up at 6.30 AM and then through the morning at roughly half hour intervals until 2.30 PM. Such is their enthusiasm that some were still wearing their Jim-jams. However, enough had arrived by 10.30 so that we could start the game. And what a game it proved to be. WOW! Within a few seconds of the start Fiery Fred, playing for the Coffin Dodgers, made an almost single-handed (or should that be single-footed?) assault on the Seizure Stoppers goal which was thwarted by Alan Mitderspecs. Rob De Walker made two brave attempts on behalf of the Seizure Stoppers but could not get through their defence. Then from a free kick Near Miss Chris scored the first goal for the Seizure Stoppers. If we’d had one, the crowd would have gone wild! Of course they had forgotten to set their clocks as well. There then followed some terrific footwork by Peter Dem Bones Kelly. If only he could do it with a ball it would be really impressive. But, one step at a time. I was there one day at practice when Peter actually did try dribbling with a ball and it took three of us several minutes to unravel his legs. The rest of the first half was a blur of goals. Fiery
David Moyes has improved Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad sporting director Loren has praised the work done by coach David Moyes since taking over the Spanish club in November. The former Manchester United manager replaced Jagoba Arrasate, who was sacked last year after a dismal start to the season left the Basque club in 19th place in La Liga. The 51-year-old Moyes has since led Real Sociedad away from the relegation zone and into ninth in the standings with 10 games of the season remaining. ‘It was hard for us to replace Jagoba,’ Loren said in an interview with Spanish sports newspaper Marca. ‘But the team needed to react and it certainly has done so. ‘Our immediate aim has been achieved. ‘I think the first thing that David (Moyes) did when he arrived was to try
to give the team more solidness and consistency, and you can see that he has achieved that. ‘The team is improving.’ Moyes is under contract with Real Sociedad for another season. ‘We were fortunate that a man that initially appeared inaccessible to Real Sociedad, ended up coming here,’ Loren said. ‘I believe he (Moyes) is giving a big contribution.’ ‘It’s difficult to bring players from England, unless you have something that can attract the players,’ Loren said. ‘With Moyes here, the task of bringing players from there (England) can be made easier.’ Real Sociedad return to La Liga action on Saturday when they play away to Malaga. dailymail.co.uk/
According to leading Spanish newspaper AS, Malaga are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements - and will make an official enquiry at the end of the season. Javi Gracia is said to be a great admirer of the Scottish workhorse for his relentless defensive support and technical proficiency going forward. Naismith only put pen to paper on a three-year contract extension with Everton in December 2014, and has described his form as the best of his career. When signing the deal he said: “I am so happy here.
“From the moment I signed my first contract here it wasn’t long before I saw what a great club it was.
Malaga poised to make a surprise offer for Everton star
Fred was at last rewarded a goal for the Coffin Dodgers with a stunning shot from the half-way line. Then Near Miss Chris scored yet again for the Seizure Stoppers. Just before the Mighty Vicko blew his whistle for half-time Rob De Walker scored another for the Seizure Stoppers putting them 3 – 1 up to the Coffin Dodgers. During half time while Hurricane Helen clad in a very fetching Tutu distributed orange segments, two more players turned up. They were Norman King and Ken Hind. They have been christened the Monarch and The Hair. With the surname King, Norman is obviously the Monarch and Ken we had to christen The Hair as it`s straight from Dallas. This is pure jealousy on my part because my hair went many years ago. The Monarch joined the Seizure Stoppers and Ken The Hair played for the Coffin Dodgers. They both proved to be very willing and competent players and were welcomed into the squad. I was especially impressed by Ken who from start to finish and despite throwing himself enthusiastically into the game, did not have one hair out of place. I really am now insanely jealous. Not only does he have well disciplined hair, he is a good looking chap who plays well and doesn`t mind buying a round.
“I would say this is probably the best form of my career. I’m delighted to have agreed an extension which will keep me here for a few more years yet.” It’s also reported that other Premier League clubs are interested in the 28-year-old, but a move back to Rangers would seem the most likely scenario. dailymail.com
Shortly into the second half, Big Bad Bob, for the Coffin Dodgers had several shots at goal but these were all blocked by Alan Mitderspecs. Fired by his success Rob De Walker was rewarded with a second goal for the Seizure Stoppers and this was followed quickly by anther brilliant goal from Near Miss Chris. With renewed determination Fiery Fred managed to score another two goals for the Coffin Dodgers. That was how the last game of the season ended 5 – 3 to The Seizure Stoppers. We usually have a man of the match but for this occasion we must nominate two and these are Fiery Fred and Near Miss Chris who both scored hat-tricks. How sad I am to report that today was the final game of this, the first full season of Walking Football. Altogether we have played 16 games and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. I would like to thank the Miraflores Ladies for their efforts as voluntary first aiders, hurricane Helen for the constant and welcome supply of orange wedges, Colin Scoop Wheeler for his terrific photography and the wonderful guest appearance by the Over Eighties Nudist Ladies Cheerleaders. I for one, will miss the heady scent of Ibuprofen Deep Relief Gel and Steradent wafting over the hallowed dirt of our pitch. The melodic cracking and twanging of bones and tendons during the warm-up and, oddly enough, I will miss the clanging of the bell on the Colostomy cart as it is drawn up to the pitch by a matching pair of Corgis. Most of all I will miss the camaraderie of all the players as we sat on the delightful patio at Camping Los Gallardos dissecting each match. Watch this space, because come October and the cooler weather......................................

always looked like they could break away and get another to make it easier. The teams were levelled up after 56 minutes when a 2nd yellow was shown to Dani for constantly fouling Mansour in the heart of the Huercalense midfield. And it was Mansour who put the game beyond Molina in the final minutes as he latched onto a through ball from substitue Benitez and calmly fire home. Huércal-Overa C- F. : Ismael, Carlos, Lee, Finidi, Lloris, Moreno, Mansour, Víctor (Benítez 75’), Juanma (Juli 45’) & Carmona (Chinchilla 60’).
Huercal-Overa CF’s push for the play off spot stayed on track this week with a well fought victory in Molina de Segura on a blistering afternoon. The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute by a fantastic 25 yard free kick by expat Lee Spires who placed the ball into the corner of the net with the keeper unable do do anything about it. indalo bowling club
On Friday 20th March, The Indalo Bowling Club hosted their long awaited annual 4-2-2 Open Tournament. This attracted bowlers from as far as Costa Blanca. Despite the first day being wet & cold the tournament began with all 128 participants ready for the challenge. We managed to play the morning session in atrocious conditions and eventually cancelled play for the day at lunchtime. During the night a terrific thunder storm turned the carpet into a lake. Fortunately after a late start Saturday began to warm up and all the matches were completed in good time. Sunday was a glorious day and the spirits were high as everyone battled for places. Monday the last day culminated in an afternoon of finals. The Rinks Final was contested by; John & Sue Mannall (Indalo), Marie
Morley & David Malatynski (Wales) against Ted Upham, Maggie Holmes (Indalo), Florence & Mike Edwards. This was an exciting game, culminating in a draw. After a deciding extra end was played, the game was won by; Ted
Upham,
Maggie
Holmes,
Florence & Mike Edwards. The Ladies pairs was a well fought match and won by; Jan Westall and Cas Thomas (Greenlands), against
Barbara Davies and
Barbara Ruscoe (Indalo). The Men’s Pairs equally was a close contest and the winners were; Brian Allen and Clive Plaisted (San Miguel), against Clive Langan and Richard Chamberlain (La Marina).
URCAL GOLF SOCIETY
After a spell of very unsettled weather the members of Urcal Golf Society set of on the 21st March to travel down south to Alboran with eyes fixed firmly on the weather. They need not have worried as the day turned out to be dry and warm. Wet suites were left in the golf bags and sweaters were removed as the temperature warmed up. Several members decided to play their first round singles knockout matches and it did not take long for those to heat up either, with one very close match when Steve Fear defeated Barry Kilby 2 & 1. The three other matches were not so close. Last years winner Billy Handy was not as successful this time around going down to John Smith 6 & 4. There were also heavy defeats for Tony Morgan and Dave Edmonds, Tony going down to his former good friend Stan Whitty 6 & 5 after being two up after three holes and Dave losing 5 & 4 to Captain Steve Dodd. The remainder of the members fought out an individual Stableford contest. Considering the good conditions scores were surprisingly low with Mike Smith on one of his all to infrequent visits to Spain taking the honour with 31 points. Second place
went to Dave Butler who took the position on count back from Trevor Nicholson both with 28 points, fourth place was won by Keith Walker who finished with 26 points. There were two nearest the pin prizes, Dave Edmonds with the best shot on the 12th hole and Billy Handy on the 17th. Steve Dodd was closest to the pin in two shots on the 5th hole. This was our first visit to Alboran in 2015 and the course was in excellent condition, we very much look forward to our next visit. Our next game will be at Aguilon on the 4th April, guests will be more than welcome, anyone interested in playing please e mail Captain Steve Dodd at stevedodd652@yahoo.co.uk

Winner of the men’s individual comp. was new member Doug Birrell with a nett 38 closely followed by Gary Grey with 37 points, both are referred to the handicap secretary for immediate attention!!. Zeta Denyer took the ladies prize with a nett 30 points. The Mickey Mouse comp was a resounding victory for the team Dave and Zeta Denyer, Dave Rust and Karyn Esposito, not only did they bring Mickey home safely (although he had to be given artificial respiration on more than one occasion after being unceremoniously dumped into water) they also scored a very creditable 31 points A really good fun day of golf rounded off with

Vettel’s win a ‘wake-up call’ for Mercedes
Sebastian Vettel’s Malaysian Grand Prix victory was a “wake-up call” for Mercedes, says boss Toto Wolff. Mercedes dominated the first race of 2015 in Australia after winning 16 of 19 races last year to claim the drivers’ and constructors’ titles. However, after Vettel’s win for Ferrari, Wolff said: “We didn’t expect Ferrari to catch up on the second week. “So to lose the race fair and square is a surprise and a bit of a wake-up call, which is good for us.” Mercedes were unable to compete with Ferrari in the tropical heat of Sepang because of excessive tyre usage. “Ferrari deserved to win and from a racing perspective we have to acknowledge they have done great development,” Wolff said. “For F1 it is positive. It is the second race and a second team wins. This is what F1 probably needed.” Mercedes’ decisions to make an early stop under the safety car and to race mainly on the ‘hard’ tyre rather than
the faster ‘medium’ or ‘option’ were both questioned, but Wolff said they were beaten “fair and square”. “We couldn’t match the long-run pace of Ferrari,” Wolff said. “It wouldn’t be right to say we lost the race rather than they won it. “If I’m being optimistic I would say Malaysia was difficult for us last year, but then that would be naïve. Ferrari have done well - they have a great car, a great engine, great drivers.” Both Mercedes drivers have said they believe Ferrari could be title contenders this year, but the Italian team say it is too early to judge. Ferrari technical director James Allison said he did not expect to be able to challenge Mercedes as closely in the next race in China on 12 April. “I am fairly sure we will have our work cut out in China to do anything like as impressive a job as we have done here,” Allison said.
