Bank of Spain warns about impact of political uncertainty on the economy
New quarterly report forecasts growth, but not at the pace expected by the government. The Bank of Spain has just released its quarterly report on the Spanish economy. The Bank of Spain has just released its quarterly report on the Spanish economy. Carlos Rosillo The Spanish economy is slowing down. At least, that is the latest forecast from the Bank of Spain, which does not believe the government’s assertion that gross domestic product (GDP) will continue to grow at a pace of around 3% this year and the next. “In Spain, the information available is consistent with a gradual, moderate slowdown in activity from the high pace of expansion sustained throughout 2015,” reads the central bank’s quarterly economic report, released on Friday. The report authors also note that even though their downward revision to 2.7% is moderate, “the balance of risks surrounding this baseline scenario has worsened considerably in recent months.” Doubts over the future course of economic policies may have a negative bearing on private agents’ spending decisions BANK OF SPAIN QUARTERLY REPORT Chief among these risks is political uncertainty, said the central lender. This concern mirrors misgivings by the European Commission regarding the stalemate in Spain, which is yet to name a new prime minister following
inconclusive elections in December.
“Doubts over the future course of economic policies may have a negative bearing on private agents’ spending decisions, especially if the current situation of uncertainty extends over time,” says the report, which is part of the Bank of Spain’s Economic Bulletin. The report also makes a note of geopolitical and financial market tensions at the international level, which could have an impact on Spain’s economy. In line with Brussels, the Bank of Spain is recommending that the country do more to balance its accounts and contain spending. “These developments highlight the need for economic policies to give priority both to seeing through fiscal consolidation, which is essential for maintaining confidence, and to persevering with the application of structural reforms that reduce the vulnerabilities of the Spanish economy and enable its future growth capacity to be enhanced.” If confirmed, the expected slowdown in economic growth will represent an added difficulty in the quest to reduce Spain’s public deficit from 5.2% of GDP in 2015. http://elpais.com/

Disneyland Paris technician found dead inside haunted house attraction
Police have launched an investigation after a member of staff at Disneyland Paris was found dead in its “haunted house” attraction. The unnamed technician is thought to have been electrocuted as he tried to mend a faulty light fitting inside the resort’s Phantom Manor ride. The 45-year-old was discovered unconscious by his colleagues at around 9am on Saturday, French newspaper Le Parisien reported. The lighting engineer was declared dead an hour later with preliminary examinations revealing the cause was accidental. The ride will remain closed until at least Wednesday while police conduct a thorough examination of potential further dangers to staff and the public. Phantom Manor is one of the Paris resort’s busiest attractions and features an array of special effects and audio-animatronics. Patrick Maldidier, a union representative at the theme park, told French newspaper Le Parisien that the man was hugely popular and “always smiling”. Disneyland Paris told The Independent it was “truly saddened to learn of the passing of one of our Cast Members, and our hearts go out to his family
and friends during this very difficult time”, but offered nothing as to the progress of the investigation. There have been several high-profile incidents at Disneyland Paris over the past few years. A cleaner on the ‘It’s a Small World’ attraction in Paris was killed in October 2010 after becoming trapped under a boat when the ride was unexpectedly switched on. Millions of tourists flock to Disneyland Paris every year, yet it continues to struggle under a €1.75bn mountain of debt. It has lost money almost every year since the gates first opened. http://www.independent.co.uk/

Spanish Police Arrest 3 for Threatening a Flight by Phone
Two men and a woman have been arrested in central Spain on suspicion they caused an airliner that had taken off from Madrid’s airport to turn back, police said in a statement Saturday. The incident occurred Dec. 14 when Spain’s airport authority received a call with a recorded voice threatening a flight bound for Sao Paulo, Brazil from Barajas using phrases including “today people will die” in Spanish and “Allah is great” in Arabic, the statement said. On board were 315 passengers and 16 crew. The plane was escorted back to the airport by Spanish air force fighters. A runway was closed as passengers and cargo were inspected, but police found no explosives and the incident was declared a false alarm. The call was traced to a
phone booth in a town near Cuenca and detectives determined that the suspects were linked to a passenger on the flight who was being extradited from Europe to her country of origin, the statement said. The passenger had been refused entry into Schengen territory because of a prohibition order issued by Switzerland, the statement said. The suspects were in custody Saturday in a jail in the city of Tarrancon, midway between Madrid and Cuenca, pending an appearance before an investigating magistrate, the statement said. Authorities might seek to recover the cost of the airport security operation that exceeded 200,000 euros ($228,000), the statement said. http://abcnews.go.com/

Giant fireball streaks over Spain ‘turning night into day’
A fireball that shone ten times brighter than the moon was spotted at 4.26am on Thursday and captured on video from La Hita Observatory in Toledo. Described as an “especially spectacular” display, the meterorite could be seen hitting the Earth’s atmosphere from Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Murcia and Andalucia. José María Mateido, an astrophysist
on Spain’s SMART (Spectroscopy of Meteoroids in the Atmosphere by means of Robotic Technologies) project, a collaboration between Spanish observatories described the fireball as “amazing”. The Huelva university professor explained that the meteorite - rock from a comet - likely had a mass of around 30kg gave out the extraordinarily bright light when it hit Earth’s atmosphere at around 90,000km per hour. “This amazing fireball turned the night into day for a fraction of a second.” http://www.thelocal.es/

Netflix to film period drama series in Spain for broadcasting in 190 countries
ONLINE film and TV network Netflix will produce a period drama based entirely in Spain next year, which will be shown in 190 countries. Sources from the channel say filming will start this year in the Spanish capital and the series will hit the small screen in 2017. As yet, no title, characters or possible cast have been revealed, other than that it will be based in 1920s' Madrid and centred on the lives of four very different women who are taken on to work in a telephone operating centre. These four women travel from their different native locations in Spain to live and work in the metropolis, in what was at the time a cutting-edge professional role within Madrid's burgeoning telecommunications revolution. Naturally, the lives of the main characters and those around them are never far from jealousy, envy and betrayal, hunger for success at any cost, friendship, love, and dreams shattered and realised. The drama will be brought to Netflix customers' screens by Bambú Productions, which has already created Spanish period series including Gran Hotel and Velvet, but the new show is expected to be the most international one yet to
be filmed in Spain. Each of the 16 episodes of the first season will last around 50 minutes. Executive producer of the series, Teresa Fernández Valdés, says she finds it 'fantastic' to be able to work with 'such a talented team' as Netflix, a broadcaster which is 'revolutionising the world of TV worldwide'. So far, Gran Hotel and Velvet have become hugely popular with Netflix customers, with many of those in Spain saying they are pleasantly surprised by the quality, intrigue, plot and entertainment value of Netflix serials and that they are very much looking forward to seeing what the new one will be like. “We're sure our subscribers will love it,” says international deputy chairman of Netflix's channel Originales, Erik Barmack. At present, Netflix – which has only recently reached Spain – has over 75 million subscribers in over 190 countries and is officially a world leader in internet-based TV. It airs over 125 million hours of films, documentaries, dramas and serials daily, many of which are its own creation. http://www.thinkspain.com/

pause for thought
It quite amuses me at times how often folk explain that they don’t need to go to Church to be a Christian. And of course they’re absolutely right; it’s entirely possible to be a Christian and never attend any Church, just as it’s perfectly possible for a couple to be married without ever living together. It is, as I say possible, but extremely stressful and most unusual. For being married normally suggests a loving and trusting relationship, only truly fulfilled in being together. And whilst absence may indeed make the heart grow fonder, yet true love suffers considerable agony during periods of enforced separation, and few would choose to unnecessarily extend the time they spend away from those they love. And like a marriage, true Christianity’s a relationship built on love and trust, rather than just a belief. A marriage without love is necessarily empty and unfulfilling and the same is true of Christianity. For if I really believe that Jesus loved so much that he gave his all, suffering the worst that inhumanity could throw at him in my place, paying the penalty for all the wrong I have ever thought, said or done, then surely I cannot but respond with at least some love in return. For me to do otherwise must necessarily
pour doubt on my alleged faith, which must as a result look pretty empty, unfulfilling and worthless. So yes, it’s possible that I could be a Christian and not go to Church, to listen to his word, to give time for prayer, to celebrate his death as he instructed in the taking of bread and wine and to meet with others who similarly acknowledge their debt of love and service for everything Christ achieved for us all. It’s possible; but I believe extremely difficult, painful and stressful for anyone who really appreciates what it means to be Christian, and not a situation I would lightly choose, any more than I’d choose to live apart from my wife. In Their Easter Bonnets
Eleanor and Gilly's Monday Afternoon Line Dance Class at Maloan's Bar in Albox, held their 8th Annual Easter Bonnet Parade on Easter Monday Afternoon. Although there have been seven previous parades, this was the first one to be held at Bar Maloan's. Class organisers Eleanor Tolman and Gilly Elliott-Binns were both pleased and surprised to find that so many class members had joined in to the spirit of the event. The event this year was judged by Smooth fm radio presenter Ray Peters, Jeanette Randalls and F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) Vice Secretary Pauline Marshall. The judges this year had a particularly difficult job to do this year, because of the astoundingly high standard of bonnets entered. The winning bonnets this year were in reverse order - 3rd Lyn Williams, 2nd Ann Green and the winner was Doreen Rose. All winners received boxes of biscuits and wine plus complimentary tickets for future Line Dance Classes. However, everyone in the class was a winner this year, because everyone who attended received an Easter Egg from the organisers. In addition F.A.C.E. were also winners, because it was decided that a Raffle would
be held and the proceeeds of this Raffle would be along with other monies already raised by the class would be presented to the F.A.C.E. representative Pauline Marshall. The total amount presented to Pauline was € 219 -15. F.A.C.E is the designated charity of the Line Dance Class. Eleanor and Gilly's Line Dance Class is held every Monday afternoon, between 2-30pm and 4-30pm, at Maloan's Bar in Albox. It is a venue where people can make new friends and meet up with old friends, using Line Dancing as its main theme. Throughout the year it organises various parties and other activities, and recently several of the class members visited Benidorm to attend a special International Line Dance weekend. For further information please contact Eleanor Tolman on telephone number 950 439 003

www.soltimes.com It’s one of the sporting events even the casual fan circles on their calendar, but what makes the Grand National a British institution? Here some top facts about the great race. 1. The first Grand National was held in 1839 but it started in inauspicious circumstances – going off two hours late after confusion over weighing procedures. The aptly named 5-1 favourite Lottery was the winner. 2. The 1929 National featured the most starters in the race’s rich history when 66 horses lined up. The smallest field was in 1883 when just ten set off. 3. The fastest ever time is the eight minutes 47.8 seconds recorded when Mr Frisk sluiced home in 1990. 4. The greatest number of horses to complete the course was 23 in 1984 when Hallo Dandy, ridden by Neale Doughty, was the winner. The smallest number of finishers was in 1928 when Tipperary Tim, a 100-1 outsider, was the first of only two past the post. 5. Richard Johnson beat the record for the most rides in the Grand National without a win last year when he took part for the 16th time without success. His best effort was second on What’s Up Boys in 2002. 6. Charlotte Brew was the first female jockey to ride in the race when she was on board 200/1 chance Barony Fort in 1977. Their adventure ended with a refusal at the 26th fence. The best finish by a female jockey was last year when Katie Walsh steered 8/1 chance Seabass into third place.

7. The first five Grand Nationals included one jump that was a stone wall, situated where the water jump now stands. Becher’s Brook earned its name when a top jockey, Captain Martin Becher, took shelter after being unseated and said: ‘Water tastes disgusting without the benefits of whisky.’ The Chair is the tallest fence at 5ft 2in.

Gladrags Relaunch
Recently I popped along to the Gladrags relaunch to view the makeover the store has had from its owner, Jenni Rock… as well as to view the new ranges. Gladrags is a firm favourite of mine, and a place I try always to pop into when I’m in Albox (Almería). The owner, Jenni Rock, always has a beaming smile (as seen above) and time for a chat. She is driven by, and has a real love for, fashion and this is very apparent in her store. The boutique has been given a makeover and now includes new products. Of course Jenni still stocks new ranges each season, in the colours and styles her customers love – but now she also stocks some super shoes and extra accessories – everything to complete your new outfit. It was great to see so many familiar faces at the relaunch but also lots of new ones. The shop was a cacophony of happy chatter and giggles – a given in any visit! There was cava flowing and a selection of canapés which I tried not to eat too many of. Following the busy first day of the relaunch Jenni said, “OMG……what can I say, that was an amazing Re-launch Party. Absolutely blown away by the amount of people that came along. So pleased that you all liked the NEW LOOK Gladrags and most importantly the Collections I had chosen for Spring / Summer”. I bought a stunning navy and white culottes dress to add to my rapidly expanding Gladrags wardrobe. It has a v neck and capped sleeves, is fitted from under the bust to the tummybefore flaring out over the hips. It’s short enough to show off shapely pins but not too short that modesty is compromised. It was a super price of just €22.50! We wish Jenni all the best of luck with the new look store, new fashion ranges and the new summer season. If you find yourself in Albox do pop in and say hello… and grab a bargain while you’re at it. www.soltimes.com understand allergic rhinitis as an allergy to airborne particles, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander which affect the nose, and maybe the eyes and sinuses as well. The rest of this article focuses on hay fever caused by pollen and other airborne allergens that come from plants or fungi. Hay fever caused by pollen is also known as pollinosis.
causes symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, watery eyes and itching of the nose, eyes or the roof of the mouth. Roughly 7.8% of people 18 and over in the US suffer from hay fever. Around 17.6 million (7.5%) adults in the US are diagnosed with hay fever per year. There are 6.6 million (9%) children diagnosed with hay fever each year in the US. A 2010 study suggests that white children are more likely to have hay fever (10%) than black children (7%). Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal or perennial. Symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis occur in spring, summer and early fall. The symptoms of hay fever are usually caused by allergic sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses or weeds, or to airborne mold spores. Allergic rhinitis treatment options are: avoidance, eliminating or decreasing your exposure to the irritants or allergens that trigger your symptoms, medication and immunotherapy. Cloudbusting
A little over 30 years ago in 1985; a song was released alongside a cinematic video. The film featured the actor Donald Sutherland who plays Wilhelm Reich and Kate Bush who plays Reich’s son Peter. The song was of course Cloudbusting and is based on real events. Kate Bush had read Peter’s book A Book of Dreams nine years prior and said the book had called to her from the shelf. Written through his childhood eyes the book describes Peter’s relationship with his father. Bush says further that his father was the magic in his life and taught everything to Peter; including to be open-minded and not to put up barriers. Sadly when Wilhelm Reich was taken away by the FBI and later imprisoned in 1956 Peter realised that adults were not infallible. Reich left Hitler’s Germany via Norway on the last ship to sail to America before war broke out just days later in 1939. The United States was supposedly safe yet he was first arrested in 1941 and sent to Ellis Island prisoner as a suspected fascist sympathiser. He was released a few weeks later as it was a case of mistaken identity. Reich was a famed psychoanalyst and credited with starting the ‘Sexual Revolution,’ a term he first coined. He invented the Orgone accumulator that supposedly stored the sexual energy of any patient who went inside it. This energy would then be released inside the box and so he claimed; cure illnesses including cancer. This machine proved

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout
keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. his undoing. R e i c h also turned the box inside out so energy could be directed out and up. This would dispel another force he called Deadly Orgone Radiation which he said created desertification. Using fifteen foot aluminium pipes and electric cables that were put into containers of water; Reich claimed the machine would create rain and called it the Cloudbuster. In summer 1953 during a drought in Maine; Two Blueberry farmers hired Reich to save their fruit crop. The farmers paid up when rain fell the next morning. In Bush’s video the rain is witnessed by Reich as he’s driven away by the FBI. Reich’s Orgone Accumulator meanwhile was being investigated as a potential fraudulent product by the FDA. Hilariously’ a professor from Oregon who’d bought one said he suspected it was a scam but it kept his wife quiet for four hours a day whilst she sat in it. Eventually in 1954 the FDA banned the interstate shipment of the devices nor any promotional material. Reich complied with the order but in 1956 whilst he was away; the FDA set up a sting operation. One of his assistants fell for it and posted a spare part to another State. Reich and the assistant were arrested and eventually
imprisoned. Before being locked up they both had to return to their workshop and destroy the five machines there whilst the FDA witnessed them do it. Two months later to add insult to injury the FDA ordered that six tons of Reich’s books be burned. Reich had to pay for the lorry and a team of three to deliver the literature to an incinerator where again the FDA witnessed the destruction. Reich said it was a similar feeling to a condemned man being ordered to dig his own grave. This final act has been described as the worst act of censorship in the history of the US. A month before being released Reich wrote to his son Peter to arrange a restaurant to meet for dinner in to celebrate. Sadly Wilhelm Reich suffered a fatal heart attack before being released and his son never saw him again. In Kate Bush’s video the arrest of Reich is shown plus the destruction of his work. As a subtle homage – Kate’s character Peter is fleetingly glimpsed taking a book from his father’s pocket as he is being taken away. That book is The Book of Dreams which Peter wrote in 1973.

viewpoint
The Alquerian Plumber is simple, he is a complete idiot. Manuel
Getting a plumber in Madrid or Bilbao is a relatively simply affair. The plumbers are reliable and courteous. In other parts of Spain it is more difficult, in Almería, forget it and wash it in the nearest stream. In Alqueria just hope for miracles. There are many plumbers listed in the Alquerian Tradesman Directory unfortunately a phone call to one goes something like this. (Translated from the original Alquerian into English by Pedro Barmyescrito). Frantic housewife. “Hello is that ???????? the plumber” Plumber. “Yes” Frantic housewife. “My cellar is flooding, my children are treading water and the electrics have fused. The water is causing the house to subside and a very large, ugly fish is swimming around my dining room table”. Plumber. “Not to worry, it’ll be fine, you’ll see”. Frantic housewife. “Will you come at once”. Plumber. “Yes, not to worry”. ‘Click’, end of conversation. It is only then that ‘Frantic Housewife’ has realised that the plumber hasn’t asked for an address. The phrase ‘Not to worry’ when translated from the original Alquerian into English has a second meaning which is ‘Not a bloody chance’. At least not when there is wine and tapas on offer and it is always on offer. One plumber however defies convention and always attends when a speed and alacrity which is touching. The reason
Tuboroto has flooded more homes than a tsunami. He has the ability to inspire confidence, he knows all the keywords that plumbers use, he hasn’t got the faintest idea what they mean but he knows them. His Great-grandfather was in charge of the plumbing system on the ‘Titanic’. Contrary to popular belief it wasn’t an iceberg that let in all that water in was a simple leak in the third-engineers loo. Manuel’s Greatgrandfather attended the call. When called he usually arrives within the hour, the poor unsuspecting householder is impressed and amazed at the speed of response. Grinning Manuel will then be led to the troublesome piece of plumbing. Here the householder gets an inkling as to the ineptitude of our worthy ‘fontanero’ as he usually fails to recognise such things as valves, stopcocks, baths and sinks. He once ‘fixed’ the boiler in the town hall. The council are still filling in the hole. His speciality is looking for gas leaks with a cigarette lighter. Manuel favours the ‘Zippo’ lighter for this task as the flames is bigger which makes it easier to find the leak. He always finds it necessary to talk to himself in a light hearted and jolly fashion. Even the occasional explosion can’t dampen his good humour and he can often be seen leaving burning and partially destroyed buildings with a song on his lips and joy in his heart. This above is based on a real occurrence, the names have however been changed.
Swings and Roundabouts
I’ve always thought that a day when I don’t discover something new is a day partially wasted. It doesn’t have to be anything spectacular, like the solution to String Theory, or the source of the Nile; it can be something much more useful, such as how to pour milk out of a cardboard carton without splashing. I should know everything there is to know in the Universe, but for the Swings and Roundabouts Effect. I can, for instance, learn a new Spanish word in the morning only to have forgotten it again by the next day, or even the same afternoon. What I gain on the Swings of knowledge I lose on the Roundabouts of memory! However, I have learnt a few things over the last weeks, and some of them have stuck. I have learned to Rest. I can now recline on the sofa and watch with interested detachment as the dust bunniesof discarded dog and cat hair swirl around the floor in the breeze before coming to a halt in a corner. I used to have to arm myself with pan and brush and pursue them relentlessly, but now I leave them be – I can sweep them up tomorrow, they’ll still be there! I have learnt the advantages of removable hair. It is so simple to put it on, give it a bit of a pat, and presto! I’m ready! It is virtually maintenance-free, and I never have a bad hair day. Another advantage is time and expensively heated water saved when showering. I never realised before how long this took me,
25
By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk nor how many various bottles of assorted essential jollop I needed for the process. But now, without the burden of home-grown hair, I am in and out in a trice – it is definitely a Swing! However, the Roundabout that goes with it is the lack of insulation that I am now suffering! I have a new-found sympathy with all bald men – I never realised before how coldand vulnerable a hairless head can be! I have discovered Ready Meals - 3 minutes in the microwave and they’re done! The lack of effort spent faffing around more than compensates for their perceived unhealthiness, and as everything tastes the same to me now their flavour is irrelevant. But by far the biggest Swing is the kindness of those around me. Thank you all for your help, kind words and encouragement – and not a Roundabout in sight!

Salón de Gourmets 2016
Annual Trade Fair Represents the “Taste of Spain”. The 30th edition of the Salón de Gourmets gets underway next week in Madrid, bringing the best of Spanish gastronomy to the more than 80,000 visitors who flock here year after year. Held at the city’s IFEMA convention center from April 4th-7th, the upcoming edition of this prestigious international event will boast nearly 1,400 exhibitors, 35,000 products (of which 1,100 are new this year), and at least 92 importers from 25 different countries (Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland,
La Cena
Puerto Rico, South Africa, the UK, Russia, Uruguay, Vietnam, Sweden, the United States, Finland, Lithuania France, Japan, Austria, the Netherlands and Portugal). What’s more, Grupo Gourmets, the organizers of this massive professional trade fair, estimate that the 2016 edition will generate a total of some 200 million euros in both direct and indirect business. It’s not surprising, therefore, that the list of product categories is even more extensive and varied this year – representing a huge range of Spanish foods and wines, in addition to the latest cooking equipment, tools, uniforms and kitchenware, among other things. Another draw for visitors is the long list of parallel events that will be taking place next week, including
tasting opportunities, cooking demonstrations, round table discussions, workshops and a wide variety of competitions like the annual Dehesa de Extremadura Ham Carving Competition, the “Glorioso” Spanish Sommeliers’ Championship, and the “GourmetQuesos” Best Spanish Cheeses Competition, to name a few. Other highlights of this fair – which is exclusively for professionals – include the not-to-miss wine and olive oil tasting areas known as the Tunél de Vino (wine tunnel) and the Oleoteca, respectively. More information about this event is available at www. gourmets.net. http://www.foodswinesfromspain.com/

Magic in the Moonlight
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“The world may or may not be without purpose but it’s not totally without some kind of magic.” Whether you’re interested in science or logic is there a place in your heart to believe that magic can and does exist? Sophie Baker (Emma Stone The Amazing Spider Man 2012) quotes Nietzsche as saying that we need our illusions to live. Stanley’s response is categorical: We can’t go round deluding ourselves.” More importantly, what about deluding others? “Magic” is regarded as being a lightweight American romantic comedy by Woody Allen. It is not considered one of his finer films although it has been described as being accomplished and worth watching for the two main characters when they are sparring. Imagine chalk and cheese. It’s just like that. Insults bounce off each other like a ball constantly hitting a brick wall. Meagre attempts at philosophising which just skirt around the meaning of life and the purpose of existence. Not altogether convincing but entertaining to watch. Stanley is so set in his ways, a stubborn man who always has to be right. The film attempts to explore illusions, trickery, deception however you want to describe it just like A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) plays an obnoxious but world-famous illusionist and the film opens with Wei Ling Soo performing to a Berlin audience in 1928, mesmerised when he makes an elephant vanish into thin air. This is Stanley Crawford, an arrogant, bitter, stuffy, egotistical and priggish man. He patronises the stage hands calling them Neanderthals and Assassins. The conductor is a blithering idiot and for the autograph hunters they are mental defectives. Watching the performance in awe is fellow illusionist and so-called friend, Harold Burkhan (Simon McBurney) who visits Stanley’s dressing room to congratulate him. His compliments are double-edged: “A genius with all the charm of a typhus epidemic.” Is this a friend speaking? Howard persuades Stanley to travel to the south of France with him, the Cote d’Azur, to abandon his fiancee Olivia and the promise of a holiday to observe a mystic who is preying on wealthy families like the Catledges. Stanley is notoriously regarded as the “greatest debunker of fake spiritualists” and he is delighted for this invitation to expose this sleezy fraudster. Visiting Provence also allows him the opportunity to visit Aunt Vanessa (Eileen Atkins), sharp-tongued and full of sarcasm for Stanley who welcomes him with the innuendo of being “boring to the point of perfection.” We do learn that Stanley had an unhappy childhood which he compares to a dark cloud that has followed him dogging his life. His life is shallow and meaningless

until his beliefs are challenged by Sophie, another lost soul subjected to a poor childhood who has found an opportunity to break free of this poverty trap with her mother to lead a life of luxury with one milksop of a man, Brice Catledge who sees her as the bees’ knees! “Sophie sees all, she can predict the future. She’s a visionary and a vision.” Is she really? Not according to Stanley! He is absolutely besotted with her and serenades her tempting her with a life of luxury: yachts, expensive designer clothes, travel around Europe. The sky’s the limit. Sophie is tempted. Allen’s views on atheism come through solidly with Stanley, a bit of a contradiction himself. Acting out of character, he attempts to pray to God for a full recovery for Aunt Vanessa who has had a serious car crash, left in a critical condition. On reflection he rejects God and admits the act of prayer is twaddle. So we are back to where we started with Stanley believing that if God doesn’t exist, Sophie must be a charlatan. Interestingly, both sell illusions but in different ways. And that’s probably where the similarity ends. They spend time together and Sophie starts to develop some romantic feelings for a man who is unable to feel emotions in a similar way. And yet, he is the one who experiences an epiphany although vulnerable and susceptible to trickery, something he should understand well. His lifelong rationalism and cynicism have been misguided. Is this what he decides? Yes his world is turned upside down but can he come out of the experience a better and wiser person? “I’m a rational man who believes in a rational world. Any other way lies madness.” Apply his logic. If you believe in magic, if you ever delude yourself you inflict insanity upon yourself? Hopefully not. Allen’s ideals are not watertight so enjoy the contrived romantic comedy and solve the riddle. How can a match made in heaven ring true for an atheist like Stanley or Allen?

Nico Rosberg took full advantage of misfortunes to his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to claim an emphatic victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday. With Vettel's Ferrari engine packing up on the warm-up lap Rosberg made a fine start to lead while Hamilton, slow off the grid from his 51st pole position, was the victim of a Turn One collision with Valtteri Bottas's Williams and fell to eighth. As Rosberg cruised clear to control the contest and claim his second win of the season, fifth in succession and 16th of his career, Hamilton, in a damaged car, mounted a fightback to finish third behind Kimi Raikkonen in a Ferrari, 10 seconds adrift of Rosberg. "This has been an awesome weekend for me, and it is awesome to get another win!" said 30-year-old Rosberg, clearly delighted to have a 17-points lead over Hamilton after just two races. The two Mercedes drivers had of the Premier League season - on started from their eighth successive 7, 8 and 9 May - will be moved for front row lockout on the grid ahead television but, as it stands, this was of the Ferraris of four-time champion the final time that Leicester would play their weekend match after secondplaced Spurs. Knowing that Tottenham had dropped points might have increased the pressure on Ranieri’s side - but they overcame it to move closer to their first top-flight title. Leicester were 5000-1 outsiders for the title last August after narrowly avoiding relegation the previous season. Ranieri says his squad know they may not get another shot at glory. http://www.bbc.com/

Leicester win was good reply to Premier League title pressure, says Claudio Ranieri Leicester’s win over Southampton shows that they can cope with the pressure of moving clear at the top of Premier League, says manager Claudio Ranieri. Wes Morgan scored as the leaders earned a fourth successive 1-0 win to move seven points clear of Tottenham, who drew 1-1 at Liverpool on Saturday. The Foxes need 12 points from their final six games to guarantee the title. “Everybody is waiting for us after Tottenham’s draw. We gave a very good answer,” said Ranieri. It has yet to be decided which matches from the penultimate round
Tel 902 750 190 Vettel and Raikkonen. Vettel, expected to produce a challenge to the Mercedes domination, failed to make the start for the first time in his career after a pre-race engine failure and it was left to Raikkonen to produce his customary charging race to claim second. “It’s not too bad to finish second,” he said. “I had a bad start and we did what we could. I think we will take second today from this race.” Vettel said he was not sure of what caused his engine failure. “I don’t know why it happened, it was very unexpected,” he said. His absence and Hamilton’s clash with Bottas’s Williams took much of the heat out of the contest and allowed Rosberg a comfortable drive to 25 more points. He now has 50 to Hamilton’s 33. Bottas, who was given a drivethrough penalty by the stewards for his part in the crash, finished ninth behind his Williams team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa. read more http://en.as.com/
