Fireball seen in skies above Murcia, Andalucía and central Spain
A FIREBALL brighter than a full moon was seen crossing Spain in the early hours of yesterday (Saturday) morning, caused by a meteoric rock hitting the Earth's atmosphere at 95,000 kilometres per hour (nearly 60,000mph). It was caught on telescope at the La Hita observatory in Toledo at 23.06hrs exactly, and was seen from the ground by the naked eye from Murcia, Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid. Meteor detectors set up by the University of Huelva, on Spain's far south-west coast, based in Sevilla, the Sierra Nevada, Calar Alto (Almería province) and Huelva city itself were designed to monitor the skies continuously to enable astrophysicists to analyse the impact of burning space rocks coming from the Solar System and colliding against the Earth's atmosphere. These studies, part of the so-called SMART project, found that the fireball soared directly over northern Africa, which is why it was bright enough to be seen from southern and central Spain.
The brusque collision with the atmosphere forced the temperature of the meteoric rock to shoot up very suddenly, creating a fireball at an altitude of 107 kilometres above Morocco.
It then headed north-west, disintegrating and fizzling out at 74 kilometres above the earth. Fragments coming away from the comet 169P/NEAT cause a glittery firework display of stars known as the Alpha Capricorn Shower, and which can be actively seen from the beginning of July to mid-August in the northern hemisphere. The star-shower usually creates extremely bright fireballs which are seen from parts of earth, as was the case with the one spotted in the early hours of Saturday morning. Studying fireballs enable astronomers to determine the physical and chemical properties of comets. thinkspain

Air Europa pilots set to strike this summer
In more bad news for travellers, pilots with Spanish airline Air Europa are set to strike in the coming weeks. Although the final dates for the strikes are yet to be set, they are expected to take place at the end of July and the beginning of August, after pilots at the carrier voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking industrial action. Pilots have vowed to maintain so-called minimum services during the strike as is required under Spanish law, but the action is bound to cause disruption, including flight delays and cancellations, if it goes
ahead as planned. Air Europa pilots are protesting the creation of the new low-cost Air Europa Express service. Eleven Air Europa planes will become part of the new fleet, while the budget carrier will also take on some of the established firm’s passenger-carrying work. But Air Europa pilots say the pilots for the new service will be brought in from outside at lower costs and won’t be covered by industry agreements. The strike comes after six days of chaos at Barcelona-based Spanish airline Vueling which
blamed unspecified "operational difficulties" for flight disruptions. But both a union s p o k e s p e r s o n representing flight crews and the Spanish government said Vueling were to blame for the turmoil because the carrier had failed to properly plan for the busy summer months. On Tuesday, Vueling president Javier SánchezPrieto apologized for the carrier’s problems, saying eight planes would be brought in to shore up services as of Wednesday. thelocal

Why hot weather can be deadliest at the beginning of the summer
A new study examining data from more than 300 cities shows that health risks fall as summer progresses Numerous heat warnings have been activated in provinces across Spain, and meteorological predictions that this summer will be hotter and drier than usual are raising concerns about public health. A recently published study claims that the mortality risk for extreme heat is greater at the beginning of the summer than at the end – a fact that could encourage prevention campaigns to start earlier and focus on the first days of the summer. “Results provide strong evidence of a reduction in risk over the season,” reported researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In their study, they analyzed the adjustments and lifestyle modifications of 305 citizens from nine countries, including Spain. Every country we studied showed a significantly higher mortality rate due to heat during the first weeks of summer Researcher Aurelio Tobías “Every country we studied showed a significantly higher mortality rate due to heat during the first weeks of summer,” said Aurelio Tobías, researcher with the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research and one of the authors of the study. Published in the scientific newspaper American Journal of Epidemiology, its conclusions could be traced to factors such as the progressive
adjustment to the heat, something that has been observed in many studies, combined with changes in behavior that help people adapt, such as changing routine or using fans or air conditioning. The researchers believe that this notable decrease in heat-related deaths could be explained by the proliferation of heat-illness prevention campaigns and the investment of resources towards combating the heat. In the field of epidemiology, they use the term “harvesting effect” for the phenomenon where those whose health is already

Los efectos del calor en Madrid A group of people cool off in the fountains of Juan Carlos I Park in Madrid. /Javier Lizón (EFE) compromised are affected earlier rather than later. “This study shows consistently that the effect of the extreme heat of early summer lasts longer, from four to eight days, as opposed to at the end of the season, where it might only last two days,” adds Tobías. While this study is among the first to analyze this harvesting effect at different points in the summer on an international scale, its results are not unprecedented. Other studies from across 15 European
cities, 148 US cities and South Korea have ultimately arrived at similar conclusions. This work could be useful for educational programs that offer information on how to stay cool and raise awareness of the effect of the heat on vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly. “It could be useful to launch these campaigns earlier, concentrating resources on the first few days of the summer, when the risk is highest,” suggested Tobías. elpais

The rising temperature brings skin and hair problems with it – like rashes, acne, tanning, skin and scalp infection and split ends. From exfoliating to avoiding chemicals, experts dole out various tips to protect skin and tresses during summer. Sangeeta Amladi, head, medical services at Kaya Skin Clinic, recommends tips for a carefree and skin friendly summer: • Screen the sun: Small exposures to sun are beneficial for the skin and essential for production of vitamin D. However, prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation may have a hazardous impact on the skin. Not all sunscreens are made alike, so SPF (Sun protection factor) 30 is best recommended for Indian skin types. Apply sun screen 20 to 30 minutes before stepping out and ensure you wear sunscreen every day, even when you stay indoors. Follow the essential routine: From dry airconditioned homes to walks in the steamy and sweaty weather outside, one needs to pay special attention to summer skincare. Follow the cleansing, toning and moisturising ritual twice a day for best results. • Exfoliate: Incorporating exfoliation into your skin care regime is a must to avoid dull skin! Exfoliants remove old, dry, dead skin cells, toxins and other deposits and allow new skin cells to surface. Scrub your elbows and knees at least twice a week to get rid of dead tissues. Rub a slice of lemon with sugar every alternate day to keep them clean and to remove tan. • Hair Woes: Since hair tends to be moisturedeprived during summers, overuse of any kind of chemical and hair styling tool should be avoided. Shampooing often results in loss of shine and
moisture. Consider switching to a gentle shampoo and use a deep conditioner to replenish the loss of moisture. Massage your hair with a mixture of coconut oil, castor and olive oil regularly to keep your hair nourished. And if you are one of them who are open to homemade remedies, whisk 2 egg yolks with 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise and apply this mask on the bottom 2/3rds of your hair. Wash off after 15 minutes. • Happy Feet: During summers our feet become the target of a variety of potential foot maladies including eczema, fungal infections, and socially embarrassing “smelly feet”. Start with wearing an open sandal in the summer to keep your feet dry and give them a chance to “breathe”. Your feet are subject to sunburn just like the rest of your body. Use sunscreen during the day and apply a lightweight moisturizer in the evenings. •A foot powder is a must as it helps to soak up excessive moisture that can breed fungi and bacteria. Head for a pedicure once every week. This will keep your foot clean. Trim your toe nails to avoid dirt and dust from accumulating under your toe nails. • Maintain a healthy diet: Make fruits your best friends this summer. With summers in full swing, it is advised that apart from drinking lots of water, a special summer diet consisting of light and healthy food would ensure a cool mind and body. To keep your skin hydrated, eat lot of fresh fruits and green vegetables. Include fruits and vegetables like bitter gourd, spinach, cucumber, watermelons, oranges, cherries, plums and lychee to your diet. They are highly nutritious with an abundant supply of fibre, vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals.
ALTERNATIVA aims to achieve health through nutrition & massage. Many people when they hear “nutrition” think of slimming diets + losing weight quickly. This is not what it’s all about. Located between the better known towns of Baza and Huercal Overa, the town of Albox is flanked by the Sierra de las Estancias and the Sierra de los Filabres mountain ranges. Albox owes its foundation and settlement to the Arabs (its name means 'tower' in Arabic) with a history widely linked to the medieval splendour of the Kingdom of Granada from the 13th century The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. A large market is held every Tuesday morning. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. The town offers visitors an insight into the lifestyle of a traditional Spanish town, with its traditional customs and culture. Every year Albox celebrates All Saints Day (Halloween) with a massive week long fiesta from 31st October-6th November.

Whether you like running or not, you can’t deny that it’s good for you. It gets you outdoors, it burns calories and it’s a great way to boost your mood. But apparently —and this is based on scientific research people —running can actually make you smarter too.
It’s been documented that exercise in general can improve memory and sharpen cognitive functions, but new research suggests that it’s actually specific types of ‘aerobic and sustained’ exercise that boost cerebral activity. But running has actually been found to be the most effective when it comes to training your brain, and making it smarter. Running can kick start a process called neurogenesis. This is when new brain cells are created, in a part of the brain where memory formation and spacial navigation occurs. The act of running therefore makes your brain much sharper, and in turn, much smarter. So the next time you hop out for a run, you’re not only giving your body a workout, you’ll be giving your brain one too. Win-win! http://www.prima.co.uk

With almost 60 years of backcombed updos under her belt, Chicago-based hairstylist Margaret Vinci Heldt has died aged 98, leaving a legacy of beautiful bouffant ‘dos behind her. Inventing the hairstyle back in the 60s, Margaret never dreamed her hairdo would make such an iconic mark on 1960s fashion and beauty. Even now 60 years later, it’s still going strong. So many stars have adopted her signature look, and even though it’s a style that screams 1960, celebs today like Adele, Gizzi Erskine and even the late Amy Winehouse have reworked their long locks to make it work in a modern way. Marge Simpson has even coined the style —have you ever seen her with a different ‘do?! So to mark our respect for such an iconic hairstyle, and one that truly transcends generations, we take a look back at some of the most iconic beehive hair looks. From Brigitte Bardot to Ab Fab’s Patsy Stone, here are the best beehive celebrity hairstyles ever. In no particular order…

Alice’s Restaurant
Once whilst exploring the delightful old quarter of Naples, or Napoli as it prefers to be called; I stumbled across an Aladdin’s Cave of a shop filled with DVDs. Always one for a rummage, I dived in and came up for air clutching a copy of the 1969 film version of Alice’s Restaurant. I knew a film existed but had never seen it. Sadly I still haven’t seen all of it as the video gets stuck in too many places but at 3€, still a bargain. The film came out just after Arlo Guthrie performed at Woodstock; based on his 1967 anti-war song/ tale Alice’s Restaurant which he wrote as a protest against the Vietnam War. Voted 3rd best film of 1969, it grossed over $6 mil making it the 21st most viewed movie that year. The Director Arthur Penn who also directed Bonnie and Clyde was nominated for an Oscar. Arlo sings the true tale of him and a friend doing a favour for Alice

your brexit voice Hi all, I'm worried about what can happen to us now. Theresa May saying she can't guarantee that the EU citizens in the UK will be able to stay once she takes over there (or that they will need work permits or visas or a certain base income to remain), means that our position here in Spain can not be regarded as safe. Simon Manley the career ambassador was saying the other day not to worry: the British government (when they have one) will take care of us. I was reminded of the winter fuel allowance debacle and how we really have no one in our corner. Will they continue to pay the EHIC for Britons abroad, and adjust their pensions each year according to the cost of living?. But, we could have champions - that would be your newspapers, if you can support the proposal of saying 'we exist, we are not going to give up our lives here'. While no one knows (or evidently cares) how many ex-pat Britons there are living in Spain – anywhere from 270,000 to 800,000 (quite a variance) – the reality is that we as a large group have absolutely no ‘say’ in our political future, because we have no representation, no agency, no office, no spokesperson and no defender of our own situation. No one can be more in favour of Europe than an expatriate, yet we are not represented. We need security. We are, in fact, larger still: there are an estimated 1,500,000 Britons living in Europe (or perhaps two million – no one knows). We all need protection. Larger yet, there are thought to be twenty million Europeans living in another EU country. Who speaks for them? If we were to organise as 'ex-pats', it would be as ex-pats Europe-wide, all those Europeans who live in another country and have no representation in Brussels. (A bit ambitious, but that's where we need to be looking). We need to have a voice in Brussels – and a valid European passport or identity card. Only then will we be safe from maverick politicians and racial division. So let us start now, before the recent politics of the UK can breach our safety and our comfort. To begin, we will need a list of supporters’ names, with their email address, local town, province and country.
With a thousand names, we will begin our journey to Brussels. Our Email is: andyjimlenox@gmail.com Please write to introduce yourself

one Thanksgiving; remember Alice? Alice lived in the bell tower of an abandoned church and used to drop her rubbish from the tower down into the church proper. They picked up the garbage (as they call it across the pond) and took it to the city dump. But the dump was closed so they found a little cliff off a side road which had a small pile of garbage at the bottom. Thinking one big pile was better than two little piles; they dropped the garbage down there. The next morning Police officer Obie phoned them as he’d found Arlo’s name on an envelope at the bottom of the half ton pile of garbage. This was the biggest crime to hit Stockbridge Massachusetts in many years; normally there were two police officers and one police car. By the time Obie had hauled Arlo to the scene, there were five police officers and three
police cars. Twenty eight glossy photos had been taken off the approach, the getaway, even aerial photography and there were police dogs sniffing for clues. Arlo ends up with a $50 dollar fine and was told to pick up the garbage. Later when Guthrie went to a US Army office to be processed and drafted to Vietnam; he gets told instead to sit on the Group W bench due to his conviction. Jokingly Arlo regales who he sat with; all sorts of undesirables – mother rapers, father stabbers, even father rapers! All these desperate criminals ask him what he did to deserve being on the group W bench with the rest of them. He tells them ‘littering’ which doesn’t impress them one bit and they huddle in a corner ignoring him; until he says ‘and creating a nuisance!’ At this the fierce criminals allow him into
their gang for the day. Next when the recruiting S e r g e ant asked if he has been rehabilitated, Arlo jumps around screaming ‘kill, kill, kill!’ Then Arlo asks; ‘do I have to be moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug?’ He is excused on psychiatric grounds! It’s a fantastic anti war song; amusing and delighting over 19 minutes; if not heard yet there are many versions on YouTube. One version is of Arlo performing it in the actual church from the song. In the movie Officer Obie actually plays himself as he figured it was better to make himself look a fool than an actor do it for him. Alice (remember Alice?) also plays a cameo role in the movie.

FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WE ALWAYS MAKE TO OUR CLIENTS AFTER THEY HAVE PURCHASED A PROPERTY IN SPAIN. Question: I have just purchased a property in Spain. Is there any useful advice you can give us: Answer: • Do not become a tax resident of Spain before discussing all the pros and cons with your solicitor. It may or may not be in your interest, depending on your circumstances. To join the system is a half hour job while to get out of the system is complex. There are many reasons both in favour of and against becoming a tax resident in Spain and they require careful consideration. • If you become a resident, before deciding where to keep you savings and in what products (ie. Where? In Spain, in the UK, in Ireland, in Jersey etc. And in what products? Deposits, condos de inversion, Spanish
compliant and non compliant bonds, shares etc.) you should discuss these matters with a solicitor accustomed to cross/ border estates. This will ensure your option is the most sensible from the point of view of both tax efficiency and future probate complexity. Over the years we have seen many cases of unnecessarily complicated estates, resulting from greedy and or ignorant financial advisors who have sold unnecessarily complex financial products with the excuse of saving inheritance tax, that have then caused nasty surprises for the heirs. • Make sure you make a Spanish will. It is extremely important that they are done by a firm that has experience with probate. • Have somebody lined up to present your non-resident imputed income tax returns each year.

China warns on global economy and says G20 must lead
China's commerce minister says the outlook for the global economy remains grim despite it having overcome the impact of the 2008 financial crisis. Gao Hucheng said at a G20 meeting in Shanghai that major economies must lead the way in tackling problems, including slowing trade and sluggish growth. To boost trade the G20 ministers, from the world's major economies, agreed to cut trade costs, increase policy coordination and enhance financing. They also approved a trade growth plan. "We agree that we need to do more to achieve our common objectives for global growth, stability and prosperity," the G20 ministers said in a statement. Mr Gao said the international community now expected the G20 to show initiative and leadership in solving economic growth problems. China's will host the main G20 summit later this year. 'Deep effects' "In the past few years through our shared hard work, the global
economy emerged from its previous low and is developing in a good direction,'' Mr Gao had said at the meeting held over the weekend. He added however that "the deep effects of the global financial crisis can still be felt". "The revival and growth of the global economy is still lacking in strength," Mr Gao said. "Low levels of global trade and investment have not recovered to their pre-financial crisis levels." Mr Gao did not mention Brexit in his opening remarks at the meeting, but the vote by the UK to leave the EU has added to the global financial uncertainty. BBC

Of the total number of licences granted up until the end of April, some 15,843 related to apartments in blocks, representing a year-onyear increase of 45.3%, and 5,730 were for individual family homes, with a year-on-year increase of 34.2%. In addition, there were four permits authorised for other types of buildings not intended for family housing, compared with 11 which

In 2013, this real estate market indicator registered an all-time low with only 34,288 licences authorised, which represented a decline of 96% since the peak levels reached in 2006, when a total of 865,561 building permits were issued.

the lowest mortgage rates since 2011. The agency explained that the low mortgage rates are due to increased competition in the banking sector, and some of the European Central Bank (ECB)
interest rates recording historic lows, with the Euribor, the benchmark mortgage interest reference, standing at -0.013% at the end of May. According to Moody’s, the number of mortgage defaults are also improving, standing last December below 4.8%, at a time when the average mortgage rate in April stood at 2.03%, its lowest level since 2012. However, El Economista reported that the agency estimates that the performance and the future of the Spanish real estate market will be “limited” by economic risks from the outside, because of the “significant” level of real estate assets which the banks still hold in their portfolios, and therefore in their opinion “banks should speed up the sale of these assets in order to avoid an excess of supply reducing prices in the medium and long term”. kyero.com

Experts Predict Brexit Will Affect Holiday Home Market, But Not Prices
“I think that you must not fear the negative impact the Brexit may have, because it will be adjusted to these other markets and will not affect the prices”.
The Professional Association of Real Estate Experts (Apei) believes that the Brexit will affect the holiday sector within the real estate market in Spain, although it will not affect prices because, although the British market is very important for the Spanish real estate sector, the effect will be offset by other markets which are greatly strengthening their investment interests on the coast, which will compensate for the fall in the British demand. For this reason, El Economista reported that the Association considers that the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU will not negatively affect prices. The President of Apei, Óscar Martínez, said: “We have investors from both European and non-European countries, such as the Chinese, who are greatly increasing”, and added:
Looking to sell?
We can sell your property for you. Properties needed in all areas
According to the President, the Brexit will “especially” affect the holiday sector, both in terms of sales and rental transactions, as the Spanish coast is the holiday destination of many British families. Martínez predicts that British buyers will find it more expensive to buy or rent in Spain as a result of the fall in the pound, while the operations and transactions will become more complicated as a result of not being in the EU. However, he added that although the impact, i.e. the slowdown in transactions, has been noticed, it has only so far been slight, because of the uncertainty of the whole situation. kyero.com

viewpoint
The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria (Part three) The mood in the village was ugly. amphibious creature unknown to science.
The Rattlebag family of Rotherham had failed to return from a pony trek in the Sierra Alhamilla. Their relations in Yorkshire had received a ransom note from El Tonto, a local petty criminal demanding a ridiculous amount of money for their freedom. True to his name he had put a return address on the envelope. The Guardia Civil swooped on his hideout arresting him and freeing the family. The Rattlebags said they preferred life as a captive rather than in the Riverside Holiday Village and thanked El Tonto as he was led away.
To try and avert an uprising amongst the holiday makers Manuela was ordered to bring some fun into their daily lives. Unfortunately, she took this entirely the wrong way and was arrested for corrupting morals. The Río Verde situation was desperate. Of the eight children that entered the ‘Little Dolphins’ Fun Race’ only two left the water unscathed. Three had to be rescued from the River’s evil slow moving slime. Two developed a disgusting foot fungus with the most foul odour and one barely survived a tug-of-war between his Mother and some unidentified
Ambulances ferried the sick, injured and chronically depressed to the Hospital Santa Maria Magdalena in Almería thinning out the residents of the Holiday Village. One of the holiday chalets collapsed putting a further four in the casualty department. The weight of a glider they were constructing in the roof space was the cause. Other bids for freedom included a tunnel which accidentally came out under the main drain and four people who almost asphyxiated after climbing inside a vaulting horse. Then the beer ran out. Unable to pay the wholesaler all supplies were stopped. The holiday makers took over the camp driving out the staff. This was counterproductive as the only beer within ten miles was in the bar La Casa Devante and the Golondrina Verde both in Alqueria. As dawn broke it was obvious that The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria was empty, completely deserted. Where the holiday makers went is a complete mystery. No enquiries have ever been made into their fate, no one has complained about missing kith and kin. The SPLAT charterflight never made the UK bound leg of its journey. In yet another unusual show of village unity it was decided never to mention the enterprise again. Rodriquez piled kindling against the chalets’ walls and set fire to the complex. He successfully claimed the insurance making five Euros and 45 cents profit on the venture.
The Power of 4
I’m not good with numbers. I can face fire-breathing dragons and monsters under the bed with equanimity. I can laugh in the face of Danger, and tweak the tail of Adversity, but numbers scare me; in particular 3, 6, 7, and 9, so when Pete announced that he wanted a 4 I was not immediately overjoyed. I responded with a wholly reasonable ‘Why?’ ‘For the pool.’ He answered. I pondered. I could see no connection whatsoever between the pool and 4, so I reiterated ‘Why?’ ‘If I had a 4 I would be able to get in and out of the pool.’ This raised 2 options: He’d gone bonkers – a possibility. Or I had misheard him – equally possible. It was a hot day, and my brain was not in the mood for a challenge, so I changed my enquiry to ‘How?’ ‘Because I’ll have a 4.’ He answered in the patient tone of one explaining the Theorem of Pythagoras to a guinea pig. This had gone on long enough. ‘How will a 4 help you get in and out of the pool?’ ‘If I have a 4 you won’t need to be there to help me get in and out of the pool.’ The conversation was in danger of becoming a loop. At the risk of seeming silly I asked ‘Couldn’t you have a 5?’ ‘They don’t do 5s.’ ‘Who don’t do 5s?’ ‘Indalpool.’ I gathered together all my mental faculties, some of which
25
By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk had already fainted from overexertion. Obviously 4s existed in physical form, and were to be located at Indalpool, all I had to do was find out what form of life they were. ‘What’s a 4?’ ‘It’s one of these.’ He pointed to the laptop screen. On it was a variety of swimming pool handrails. ‘There – 4s.’ He announced in triumph. ‘See?’ I looked, and sure enough, there they were – 4s! For any sane and logical person who may still be struggling with the definition of a 4: A 4 is a handrail shaped like a 4 which is attached to the pool surround to provide security when entering or leaving the pool via the steps. Now I understood! Rather than rely on the dubious support of my arm as he perilously totters down the steps Pete could put his trust in a nice shiny chrome 4, securely bolted to the pool surround. He loves his 4. So do I!

ICED DRINKS THAT MAKE YOU LOSE WEIGHT 1/ Enjoy Cooler Runnings A pre-cardio iced drink can increase endurance by 19%, while a caffeine hit reduces perceived effort, allowing you to push harder. Which is why our cool ‘ab-uccino’ easily pays off its own calorie debt. Blend a mug of cold coffee with sugar-free nut milk and ice. Flavour with the seeds of a vanilla pod and 1tsp pumpkin spice, which buffers soreness. Now get set to make your fastest coffee run yet. Cooler than: This swerves the 37g of sugar you'd find in Caffè Nero’s Frappe Latte. 2/ Cold Hard Muscle Gains This milkshake brings all the girls to the yard by adding inches to your arms, not your waistline. Mix a scoop of vanilla whey with 1tbsp each of Greek yoghurt, carob powder and peanut butter, plus ice. It provides the 30g of protein you need for size with minimal sugar. Style it out with a retro soda glass and stripey straw for '50s diner vibes. Cooler than: It packs triple the protein of a McDonald’s Chocolate Shake. 3/ Ice Your Excuses Cross ‘hayfever’ and ‘hangover’ off your
list of 5K get-out clauses with this mix. Blitz ginger, local honey, 1tsp bee pollen, ice and a blood orange – it’s higher in vitamin C than its pale cousin. Local pollen immunises you against itchy eyes and sneezing, while ginger clears out toxins. Remaining excuses for cardioskipping include ‘it's too hot’ and ‘it's too cold’. Cooler than: Our drink contains 40% more vitamin C than Innocent’s Defence Smoothie. 4/ Freeze Out Excess Fat Never quite managed to sort out that summer body? Make a start on next year's today. Blitz a frozen peach with a mug each of chai tea, skimmed milk and ice plus 1tbsp coconut manna for testosterone-producing fats. Add a pinch of flab-frying cayenne to add fire to your ice, Game of Thrones fans. Now wait for the sun to come out so you can flaunt your efforts. Cooler than: This provides 5g more satiating fibre than Costa’s Peach Iced lemonade. 5/ DIY Cryotherapy Pour cold water on muscle soreness by blending ice with a cup of sugar-free coconut milk, a CherryActive shot, 2 dates and 1tsp turmeric. Tart cherries fight aches while curcumin, an active compound in turmeric, helps damaged muscle fibres to repair faster. If you like piña coladas, but not WINE & TAPAS getting caught out by pain, make this your go-to. Menu del Dia - Menu del Noche Cooler than: It cuts 30% of the calories in Calle Andalucia 25 Tel: 950 63 30 14 one of Starbucks' Coconut 100m down from Guardia Civil Movil: 618 710 516 Frappuccinos. Haricots Verts and Grape Tomato Salad with Crème Fraîche Dressing This dish turns your table into a fancy French bistro, but it requires exactly two minutes of cooking. Seek out real crème fraîche―it's thicker and a bit less tangy than sour cream―though sour cream will do in a pinch. This dressing is excellent on any kind of salad, and you can leave out the shallots to use it on fruit salads, too, especially those with melon.
Ingredients
1 pound haricots verts, trimmed 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil 2 tablespoons minced shallots 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons crème fraîche 1 tablespoon honey 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved 1 tablespoon pine nuts, toasted
Asparagus Ribbons with Lemon and Goat Cheese The fun ribbons created by shaving asparagus with a vegetable peeler are easy to make, and don't have to be cooked, so they retain their crunch and flavor. This fast salad makes a great light, fresh side for just about any summer dish, from burgers to grilled fish to barbecue.
Method
Hold each asparagus spear by the tip end. Shave asparagus into ribbons with a vegetable peeler to measure 3 cups. Reserve asparagus tips for another use. Combine asparagus and tomatoes in a
medium bowl. Combine chives and next 6 ingredients (through 1/4 teaspoon salt), stirring with a whisk. Drizzle over the asparagus mixture, tossing gently to coat. Top with goat cheese.

the must-visit Spanish food and drink festivals
All year round MadrEAT happens on the third weekend of every month throughout the whole year. It’s a food fair featuring global cuisine, usually presenting 60 Spanish and international food vendors serving traditional and innovative examples of their cuisines. You’ll find some of Madrid’s most popular restaurant chefs, from places like Diverxo, Kabuki, Mamá Framboise, Sudestada and TriCiclo, in the food trucks and stalls.
La Paloma, 15 August

This is Madrid’s biggest street party
held in a typically sweltering August. Thousands of people ram the streets to feast on offerings by local bars and outdoor pop-up cafes. This is an exciting food-centric event for all. La Tomatina, 31 August The famous tomato festival is the world’s most famous food fight. More than 40,000 participants every year take to the streets of Buñol, Valencia, which run red with the juice of more than 100 tonnes of tomatoes. Fun? Very much so. http://www.telegraph.co.uk

Book Review
The Farm by Tom Rob Smith
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“He drove me to the madhouse. He said this is where I belong, in rooms next to people howling like animals.” “The Farm” follows a similar pattern to many of the Scandi murder/mysteries: picturesque villages and isolated farms with bleak landscapes, taciturn patriarchs such as Hakan who dominates Elise his wife, Mia his adopted daughter and the entire community. He thrives on this power. We have an amateur sleuth plagued by her own nightmares seeking answers to the disappearance of a vulnerable child. Are we talking about murder or abduction? Smith presents us with stories within stories, multi-layered. Fascinating. You might remember Smith from “Child 44” (2006) one of a trilogy, the first ever thriller to be longlisted for the Man Booker Prize? Ridley Scott snatched up the film rights and the film has just been released (Autumn 2015). This one is a murder mystery set in Stalin’s USSR. “London Spy” BBC2 drama is currently on tv, Smith’s first drama for television. More than 4 years ago Smith received a call from his father with the unexpected and shocking revelation that his mother had been committed to an asylum. It was alleged that Smith’s father had become involved in criminal activity leading to a sinister conspiracy. She discharged herself and flew from Sweden to London in an attempt to convince Smith and his brother that she was not insane. Smith had the unenviable task of deciding whether she was insane. This autobiographical streak separates the novel from Smith’s trilogy, more typically Scandi in essence, but this one gives it a disturbing and chilling feel and a very real appeal to readers who devour thrillers like myself. How does the past affect people’s behaviour and perceptions in the present? There seems to be a fine dividing line between the truth and how we, as individuals, might perceive the truth. In a nutshell, people and events are very often not what they appear to be. Daniel, a freelance garden designer, the son of Tilde and Chris is 29, living in London with his partner Mark, a 40 year old corporate lawyer, a fact he has chosen to conceal from his parents. He didn’t want his parents to think they had failed: “The memory of a perfect childhood would die, and we’d mourn it as surely as we would the passing of a person we loved.” He saw the concealment as well-intentioned cowardice rather than shame. Daniel was under the impression that his parents had a perfect marriage, they were an unbreakable team and were financially comfortable in their retirement. He felt shame, sadness and disbelief at his untrustworthy insights, the raw truth of how poor they actually were. Hakan Greggson was their Swedish neighbour, a powerful farmer who controlled his wife and daughter Mia, enjoying his power within the local community. The unsolved mystery is what becomes of Mia who abruptly disappears off the face of the earth. Tilde is convinced she has been murdered and collects flimsy bits of evidence which lends itself more to an understanding of Tilde’s own psychotic behaviour rooted in what happened to her during the summer of 1963. It’s mindblowing. “Everything that man has told you is a lie. I’m not mad. I don’t need a doctor. I need the police.” When Tilde arrives in London she is shabbily dressed, her clothes showed signs of

“distress,” her shoes were scuffed, trousers crumpled unlike her normal appearance of being well-dressed and she seemed to have aged considerably. Once she felt relatively safe from her enemies she opened her satchel and took out her documents, photos and a black, leatherbound filofax in which she had written copious notes in order to figure out what was going on around her. When she returned to Sweden 50 years later she felt very much like an outsider in her own country- a Utlanning-a word Tilde felt to be very cruel. The landscape mirrored her sense of loneliness and isolation where “the wilderness rules supreme.” “This is the landscape that inspired the mythology of trolls, giant lumbering man-eating creatures with mushroom warts on their crooked noses and bellies like boulders.” Monsters could easily hide in the forests, their yellow eyes stalking you, like the dreaded elk! Tilde had run away from her parents aged 16 travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Holland before finally resting in the UK where she met and married Chris. “I wanted to grow old on the farm with your father. I wanted to build the home I’ve dreamed about since I was a child. Somewhere special.” She hoped to become self-sufficient, fish for salmon in the nearby river, grow vegetables and convert the outbuildings into rustic guest accommodation. Chris was more pessimistic about the success of this. She recounted swimming alone and naked in the Elk River, feeling vulnerable when she became aware of the presence of a giant elk. The locals didn’t believe her story and mocked her. The incident reminded her of the story of a forest princess riding naked on the back of one of them. She interpreted the sighting as a blessing-they had made the right decision to move to Sweden: “We belonged here.” Hakan, a 50 year old seemed to display the vigour of a young man but the cunning of an older one. Defined by his ownership, Tilde referred to him as a “primitive xenophobe.” He was desperate to expand his empire and buy Tilde’s farm, offering three times the amount paid. Tilde became paranoid that he wanted them to fail and was constantly spying on them. “In the summer of 1963 an event changed my life, broke my life and made me a stranger in my own family.” The real truth of the summer of 1963 is shocking……………… Tilde told her son she was terrified when they committed her. She was surrounded by genuine madness and didn’t know if she’d ever leave the asylum. Was there a conspiracy? A paedophile ring? Was this the deeper scandal, connected to the murder of Mia? Who was Freja? Who killed her? What can Daniel do? “I’m not saying you’re wrong. It’s also impossible for me to say you’re right.” He does the only thing possible, he goes to Sweden to discover the truth for himself, uncovering plenty of skeletons, culminating in an intense and dramatic denouement. Yes, he discovers the truth. Nothing is what it seems. It’s certainly an exciting and gripping novel that will leave you hooked from beginning to end, no doubt about that. Kevin Bircher wins Forum’s 250th event
Forum Golf Society’s 250th event was a Double Par Medal at Aguilon, and on a day that saw plenty of good scoring it was fitting that the winner was Kevin Bircher, who proved that practice definitely pays off with a net score of 69. Graham Tabberer was second, beating Dave White on countback after they both scored level Par 71, with Gill Vine (72) fourth, Bob Cowan (72) fifth & Malcolm Sibbons (73) sixth. To mark the 250th there were 26 prizes on offer, including 6 nearest the pins which went to Mike Duckham, Mike Inns, Malcolm Sibbons, Jim Barclay, Bob Cowan & Peter Tinsley, and two longest drive prizes, which were won by Adrian Lawrence & Kevin Staines. The event was also the fourth qualifier for the 2016/17
Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues, and the initial standings see Bob Cowan out front, 3 points clear of Dave Jordan, whilst the leaderboard at the top of Forum’s Claret Jug League is getting quite congested, with Kevin Bircher’s victory seeing him move up from seventh to second, now just 14 points behind Phil Elam, with the ever consistent Richard Price handily positioned in third place. 22nd July Stableford at Lorca 29th July North v South matchplay day at Aguilon 12th August Pairs Betterball stableford at Valle del Este For further information, contact Phil Elam on 666 847840 / philjelam@yahoo.co.uk, or see www. forumgolfsociety.webs.com

Hamilton ‘blown away’ by fans’ ‘love’ after British GB win
Lewis Hamilton said he was “blown away” by the support he received from the home fans during his dominant victory in the British Grand Prix. “It’s mesmerising to see so many people so cheerful,” said Hamilton. “Just seeing how positive everyone was, the constant love that’s shown. “I really feel like we did it together. It is a long journey we have been on, and there is real love there.” It was Hamilton’s fourth win in his home race and third in succession. And it brought him level with 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell as the most successful driver at Silverstone. The Mercedes driver, who led every lap from pole position, described it as “a perfect weekend”. And it got even better for him three and a half hours after the race when stewards penalised his team-mate Nico Rosberg 10 seconds because Mercedes had broken rules on how much help a driver can be given over the radio. That dropped Rosberg to third place and cut the German’s championship lead over Hamilton to just one point. “I am really happy because it is so easy to come into this weekend with the wrong energy,” he said. “But to come in feeling fresh, powerful, strong and confident and deliver is what I plan to do every weekend. “This has been the best week of the year, without doubt.”
The win was Hamilton’s fourth in the past five races, which has enabled him to make up nearly all the ground he lost with a difficult start to the season in which he had to start two of the first four races from down the grid as a result of technical problems. “I feel like I would have won in China and Russia if I didn’t have the problems I had,” Hamilton said. “But I would definitely say through that rough patch I was going through in terms of reliability, it is hard to handle when you want to win the world championship as much as I do. “But I really feel that since that low after Barcelona [where Hamilton and Rosberg crashed out on the first lap], I was able to cultivate a very positive and strong mental attitude, and that’s what I have today. “That’s how I’ve won as many races as I have and it’s something I plan to continue.” bbc.com

Andy Murray: Wimbledon champion can be world number one
Britain’s Andy Murray has the momentum to become world number one for the first time after winning his second Wimbledon title, says Tim Henman. Murray, ranked second behind Novak Djokovic, earned his third Grand Slam by beating Milos Raonic on Sunday. “Trying to get to number one is a realistic opportunity now because he and Djokovic are so far ahead,” said Henman, a former world number four. “He can use this win as a springboard to push on and win several more Slams.” Murray, 29, returned to number two in the world rankings in October 2015, but still has plenty of ground to make up on Djokovic - despite the Serb’s shock second-round defeat by Sam Querrey at SW19. The British number one is likely to need to win September’s US Open and the ATP World Tour Finals in December to move anywhere near 29-year-old Djokovic, who has held the top spot since July 2014. Murray’s first major title was the 2012 US Open and he followed that up with his maiden Wimbledon title a year later. But he had lost his previous three Slam finals before ending that miserable run against Canadian sixth seed Raonic.
It was the first major showpiece the Scot had not faced either Djokovic or 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. “In terms of being ranked among the all-time greats, it is a numbers game how many more he can win,” said former British number one Henman, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals four times. “Obviously he has to stay injury-free and maintain his momentum - which he will - to win more. It is going to be great to watch.” Boris Becker, the six-time Grand Slam champion and now Djokovic’s coach, agrees Murray can extend his tally and believes more SW19 success is almost inevitable. “At 29 he is at the peak of his career,” said the 48-year-old German. “He has been playing great tennis for the past 18 months and I’m sure he will go on to win a few more. “Grass is his most natural surface compared to the other players around him. He will always be a big threat at Wimbledon and he will be winning a couple more.” Bbc.com
