Will English be the EU’s official language post-Brexit?
German and French are already gaining currency, despite English’s traditional role as the language of business While Europe and the global financial markets were chewing over the UK’s decision to abandon the European Union on Friday, June 24, some French members seized the opportunity to take up arms against the widespread use of English as the bloc’s lingua franca. If the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the club, they reasoned, why should its language predominate in Brussels? Politicians from across the political divide such as Robert Ménard, mayor of the French Mediterranean town of Béziers, who has links to the far right National Front, or Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a European Parliamentarian and left-wing candidate for France’s Presidency, who is advocating Frexit, expressed the same opinion that fateful Friday: “English no longer has legitimacy in Brussels,” said the former; “English cannot be the third language that the European Parliament works in,” said the latter. Former EU president Jacques Chirac once walked out of a meeting in Brussels when fellow Frenchman Ernest-Antoine Sallière – the then-leader of the European Employer’s Association (UNICE) – said, “I’m going to talk in English because it is the language of business.” Other English-speaking countries, such as Ireland and Malta, chose to be represented by Gaelic and Maltese respectively within the EU In 2013, the European news site Euroactiv reported that the EU’s French elite was finally resigned to the fact that their language no longer enjoyed the influence it had until the 1990s, when it was used as the EU’s main working language. Meanwhile, the French newspaper Libération’s correspondent in Brussels commented after the referendum: “The tendency to use English is powerful and it will probably be difficult to change.” The EU has 24 official languages, four less than

the number of members (until the UK left), as some members states share a language. There are 1,750 linguists, 600 assistants, 600 translators and 3,000 freelance interpreters working in the European Commission (the executive body of the EU) alone, and whose job is to make sure all official documents are available in every language. But in meetings and seminars, as well as for urgent reports and press releases, English has long prevailed, followed by German and French. Euro-English As leading French daily Le Monde explained to its readers in an article on the consequences of Brexit, 38% of Europeans already speak English as a second language and it is unlikely it will stop being used in EU institutions. After all, as a report by the European Commission notes, it is the most spoken language in the European Union. However, the English spoken in Brussels is not British English. It is a type of Euro-English influenced by the language spoken by Eurocrats who have introduced words from other languages. For example, ‘control’ is used instead of ‘monitor’ and ‘delay’ instead of ‘deadline’. The paradox is that although English is predominantly used in EU institutions, without the United Kingdom as a member it will cease to be the official language because the UK was the only country putting it forward as its language. Other English-speaking countries, such as Ireland and Malta, chose to be represented by Gaelic and Maltese respectively within the EU. Former European Commissioner and current European Parliamentarian Danuta Hubner, who presides over the European Parliament’s Constitutional Committee, said on Monday, “English is the official language because the UK wanted it that way. If we don’t have the UK, we don’t have English.” According to Reuters, if other member states want

to maintain English as the official language, they will have to come to an agreement or change the rules so that countries like Ireland can have two official languages. But the Irish representative in the European Commission says English shouldn’t disappear automatically as the official language, as Hubner points out: “The Council of Ministers unanimously decides the rules that regulate the use of languages in European institutions. In other words, any change needs a unanimous vote from the Council, including Ireland.” Nothing is automatic in Brussels, but since Friday things have been moving at a clip. Along with the message telling David Cameron to activate Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and start the two-year process of pulling the United Kingdom from the EU as soon as possible, according to the Wall Street Journal, the European Commission has already begun using more German and French. elpais

'I've had best time ever' insists American gored in bull run
Matthew Lavin was gored through his left thigh on Wednesday morning as he ran with the bulls in Pamplona. The 39-year-old painter from New Jersey spoke to The Local from his hospital bed in Pamplona just hours after receiving the injury during the penultimate run of the annual San Fermin festival. “I’ve feeling alright,” he said. “All in all it’s been one of the experiences of my life.” He described the moment that the half-tonne animal, a fighting bull named ‘Ilustrado’, charged into him on the approach to the Town Hall Square. “I was running and I got caught up in some human traffic, I turned and saw the bull heading towards me and I just thought ‘run faster, get out of the way’, I had about three four strides to get away but I guess I didn’t get out of the way quickly enough.” As he tried to reach the safety of the barrier the bull caught him and pierced

his left thigh. “I knew I had been punctured but at that moment the adrenalin was so great that it didn’t really hurt as much as it should have done. I didn’t realize it was so bad,” he said. He was pulled under the barrier to safety and treated by Red Cross medics at the scene before being transferred by ambulance to hospital. “I’ve got around 20 stitches in me. It’s going to leave quite a scar,” he said proudly. Doctors have told him that he could be discharged within 24 hours. “I really hope so, because there is still a day left of the fiesta and with an injury like this comes a bit of fame. I’d like to be able to recount my experience.” Enjoying the fiesta in Pamplona before taking part in the running of the bulls. Photo: Matthew Lavine “I’m not going to let this put me off. I’ve had an amazing time at San Fermin and running with the bulls was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in my life. I’d love to come back and run again,” he said. “I came knowing that if you run with the bulls you can get gored and I thought about it a thousand times before deciding to do it. I knew it could happen and it did happen. And I’m lucky that I can walk away from it.” thelocal

Summer is the time for going out and having fun whether you are travelling or on vacation. When you're eating out or buying food that has been prepared for you, it's often easier to have more fat, salt and calories than you realise. The simplest but not always the easiest tip is to remember that you don't need to clear your plate! Ideally try to eat slowly and stop when you're full. Even when you're out, try to choose the healthier options; here are a few tips to get you started Go for Dishes that are: Grilled, boiled, poached, steamed or stir-friend. If you can't tell from the menu how a dish is cooked then don't hesitate to ask. Watch your food portions! As well as choosing healthier options, it's also important to avoid eating too much. This isn't always as easy as it sounds, so here are some common tips that you might find helpful: Try not to have lots of bread or other nibbles before your meal arrives If your meal doesn't come with vegetables, order some as a side dish or have a salad with your meal or as a starter Have a glass of water with your meal

Huercal Overa is a market town in the Almeria province. The town is a merge of two medieval settlements – Huercal and Overa. Until 1488, the area of Huercal Overa was frontier to the kingdom of Granada. It was reconquered by King, Fernando el Católico, who commanded the troops of the Marqués-Duque de Cádiz. The town later became independent in 1668. Huercal Overa is a thriving town that offers its visitors and residents many places to eat and drink. It has a wide range of local boutiques which can be found in the centre of the town. The town has its own municipal swimming pool and leisure centre. It also has two local markets that take place every Monday and Thursday. The town's religious architecture is very impressive and visitors should take some time to visit the church of Nuestra Seňora de la Asunción. Founded in 1505, the church is situated in the “Old Town” of Huercal Overa. Here you will find the traditional Spanish plaza which is surrounded by shops and bars. contact: sales@soltimes.com In addition to the sun, beaches and variety of water sports on offer, this Almerian town offers its visitors a cultural and artistic heritage based on its extensive past. Adra was founded by the Phoenicians sometime during the 8th Century B.C., however according to the archaeological remains found on the Montecristo mountain, a site classified as being worthy of important cultural significance, the area has a Punic past. During the Arab rule, the capital of the area was located in what is now the neighbourhood of La Alquería (the so-called Adra La Vieja), that when conquered by the Christians, became what is known as Adra La Nueva. Architecture Among the most interesting religious buildings in Adra are: the Parish Church of the Inmaculada Concepción, a church of substantial size that dates from the 16th Century and which has beautiful statues inside; San Sebastian chapel; from the end of the 17th Century and reconstructed in the 18th Century, underneath which remains have been found of Romans who worked in salting factories; the Church of Our Lady of Las Angustias, that, situated in Adra La Vieja, is the oldest of the parishes in the town; and the Chapel of San Isidro, from the 18th Century, an example of popular architecture from the Alpujarras. The stately buildings also attract the attention of travelers, such as the Casa del Conde de Cachón, today the headquarters of the Museum of Adra and from whose courtyard one can access the archaeological site of the Montecristo of Adra; as well as the Houses of Marqués of the Gnecco, built in the 18th Century in different areas of the town and which are characterized by their flower-lined and porticoed courtyards. Left over from the town´s industrial past, mainly in mining, is the Foundry of San Andrés, the first lead factory in Spain, from which only two buildings have been preserved: the Vinegar Factory, today an exhibition centre and the Torre de los Perdigones, headquarters of the town´s Tourist Office, where you can find a viewpoint with views to the port, the Real Club Náutico and to the coast. Hotels Hotels in Adra may be hard to find, as it is only a small coastal fishing village. There is a guesthouse just outside the town which provides visitors with a comfortable place to stay (shown below), however there is a lack of hotels in the town itself. Nearby towns such as Berja (13km), La Rábita (14km) and El Ejido (18km) provide an array of hotels and accommodation very close by to the town. Beaches Nature lovers can enjoy a variety of beaches and coves spread along 20 kilometres of coast and the Nature Reserve of La Albufera on the Adra river, where you can see a huge array of aquatic birds, including Ospreys and Kingfishers, as it is a popular stopover point during their migration to and from Africa. Hiking fans can choose from a wide selection of routes along the coast as well as around the Adra riverbed and through the forests of the area. http://www.andalucia.com

OASÏA REDING SECOND IN 2016 WORLD JUNIOR KITEBOARD CHAMPIONSHIP Mojácar is firmly on the map of international kiteboarding, thanks to young mojaquera Oasïa Reding. Furthermore, her second place in the IV World Championship in this risky sport puts her on course to join the professional circuit. This championship, held in Sant Pere Pescador, Gerona, is unique in the world as it gives promising youngsters the opportunity to see and compete alongside the world’s best exponents of this spectacular sport. 47 young people aged between 8 and 19, representing 18 countries competed in the competition, all hoping to be the future world stars of this discipline. Representing Spain and with Mojácar’s coat of arms of proudly on her board, Oasïa Reding achieved second place despite competing with the very best, struggling with grip and strength as only our little
champion knows how. Although she just turned twelve years of age, she completed all the required professional manoeuvres. Kiteboarding is a water sport in which you glide through the sea with a board and a kite, “flying” between the waves. The heart stopping acrobatic exercises require an impeccable physical condition and a high level of acrobatic skill. Sponsored by Mojácar Town Council, Oasïa joyfully goes from strength to strength; Champion of Spain, fifth in Europe and now second in the world. Now she will enjoy a well-deserved holiday before training for the next competition. It will surely lead to more big news, so watch this space!
CONCHI AGUILAR MARTINEZ AT THE CENTRO DE ARTE LA FUENTE, MOJACAR
On Friday July 15th at 7p.m, a fresh art exhibition opens at Mojácar’s Centro Municipal de Arte “La Fuente”, which will be showcasing the work of Conchi Martinez Aguilar until the end of July. Born in Albacete, Conchi Aguilar began her artistic career in the city’s Universidad Popular, as well as attending painting courses throughout Spain with a number of renowned masters of art including; Antonio López Carralero and Paco Molina. She has participated in numerous collective exhibitions in a number of major Spanish venues, being involved in Albacete’s famous historical group “Quince Navajas del Tercer Centenario”. Conchi’s paintings reflect her passion for light and the play between clarity and shade. She paints nature enveloped in the sunrise, along with objects illuminated by the light passing through windows to
courtyards. This exhibition is of a high artistic level and is an additional attraction that Mojácar has to offer to its visitors and residents alike. Throughout the entire year and, particularly in the summer, the organised art exhibitions run continuously in the town’s two art galleries, as well as from time to time in the Centro de Usos Múltiples at the Fuente. This active participation in the art world also spreads to other private galleries located in the town, with whom the Council collaborates on a regular basis. In addition, there are the two art foundations, Fama and Valparaiso, the latter of which Mojácar Council collaborates with to welcome residential scholarships artists from around the world.

(The good news is it's less than you think) Just 5 minutes of vigorous exercise a day is needed to reap health benefits Or 15 minutes of brisk walking or riding a bike gives the same results This is far less than the Government-recommended 30 mins a day Over 35 minutes a day had no additional health advantages, study said We all know exercise is good for us but exactly how much should and what types should we do? While some experts suggest short and strenuous bursts, others would argue more moderate forms for longer periods give the most health benefits. The good news is, the most significant health benefits come from minimal exercise, a new study claims. Just five minutes a day of vigorous exercise like running
or 15-minutes of brisk walking or riding a bike - is all you need for your body to reap the benefits. In the latest study, Dr Thijs Eijsvogels and Dr Paul Thompson compared the effects of varying amounts of moderate and vigorous exercise on cardiovascular disease and mortality rates. The smallest amount of exercise to make a difference to health is 105 minutes a week, the study said, the smallest amount of exercise to make a difference to health is 105 minutes a week, the study said they found the ‘lowest effective dose' - that is the smallest
amount of exercise to make a difference to health was the equivalent of 105 minutes a week. This falls well below the NHS guidelines for adults, which recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Moderate activity will raise your heart rate and make you breathe faster and feel warmer. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate level is if you can still talk, but you can't sing the words to a song. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Lifting lighter weights is 'AS effective as lifting heavier ones' - and the key is keeping going until you're too tired to go on It has long been the assumption that to build muscle you lift heavy weights New study found higher reps at lower weight is just as effective as lifting heavy weights for fewer reps Experts say key is the lifting until the point at which a person is fatigued For those building up the courage to join the rank and file of the gym's free weights section, the prospect can be daunting one. Embarrassed at a lack of strength and intimidated by the hulking regulars lobbing a giant weight over their head with seeming ease, can prove too much. But, a new study suggests lifting those heavy weights may not be crucial to building muscle mass. For, lifting lighter weights at higher repetition is as effective as those heavy weights at fewer reps, new research has shown. A new study suggests lifting those heavy weights may not be crucial to building muscle mass. For, lifting lighter weights at higher repetition is as effective as those heavy weights at fewer reps A new study suggests lifting those heavy weights may not be crucial to building muscle mass. For, lifting lighter weights at higher repetition is as effective as those heavy weights at fewer reps Professor Stuart Phillips, lead author of the study from McMaster University, said: 'Fatigue is the great equalizer here. 'Lift to the point of exhaustion and it doesn't matter whether the weights are heavy or light.' The new findings are the latest from a series of studies that started in 2010, contradicting the decades-old message that the best way to build muscle is to lift heavy weights. To arrive at their conclusions, researchers recruited two groups of men to take part in the study. All of the participants were experienced weight lifters, who followed a 12-week, whole-body protocol. One group lifted lighter weights - up to 50 per cent of their maximum strength - for sets ranging from 20 to 25 repetitions. Professor Stuart Phillips, said: 'Fatigue is the great equalizer here. Lift to the point of exhaustion and it doesn't matter whether the weights are heavy or light' Professor Stuart Phillips, said: 'Fatigue is the great equalizer here. Lift to the point of exhaustion and it doesn't matter whether the weights are heavy or light' The other group lifted heavier weights - up to 90 per cent of maximum strength - for eight to 12 repetitions. Both groups lifted their weights until they could no longer do so, to the point of failure. Researchers analysed muscle and blood samples and found gains in muscle mass and muscle fibre size - a key measure of strength - were virtually identical. Professor Phillips, who conducted the work with graduate students and co-authors Rob Morton and Sara Oikawa, said: 'At the point of fatigue, both groups would have been trying to maximally activate their muscle fibres to

many believe are responsible for such gains. 'It's a complete falsehood that the short-lived rise in testosterone or growth hormone is a driver of muscle growth,' says Mr Morton. 'It's just time to end that kind of thinking.' Researchers suggest, however, that more work remains to be done in this area, including what underlying mechanisms are at work and in what populations does this sort of programme work. The Cork Oak
The closest most people ever get to a Cork Oak tree is by holding the cork from a newly opened bottle of wine. It’s amazing to think that the 5cm long wine plug spent a decade or more growing as tree bark around a Cork Oak somewhere here in the Mediterranean. Eastwards from Portugal through Spain, the south of France, Italy and also Morocco stretch 2.5 million hectares of Cork Oak forests. These forests provide some of the most ecologically diverse habitats in the world. Up to 135 different plant species have been found in just one square metre of forest including 30 different types of bracken. In Spain/ Portugal the rarest cat species in the world the Iberian Lynx lives in these forests and Barbary Apes live in the oak forests of North Africa. Almost all of Europe’s Crane population use the forests for shelter and breeding. Many Cranes nest just inland from Gibraltar; they can be seen atop chimney pots and telegraph poles. The biology of the Cork Oak
It’s quite funny how often people get all defensive when talking to me, and hurriedly explain that they’re not religious, but do still believe in God. And then they tend to suffer a level of confusion when I reply saying ‘me too’; for most people seem to presume that because I’m involved with the Church, write these articles and even take funerals, then I MUST be ‘religious’, with all that the expression seems to imply. But I’m not; in the sense that I don’t hold to loads of rules and regulations or follow all manner of religious traditions or formulae. True, I do believe in God, and I admit I actually enjoy going to Church. I personally believe that Jesus, the Son of God, lived a perfect life on Earth; died on the cross so that all who put their faith in him may be forgiven the wrong they have done, and that he rose from the grave and is now in heaven, from where he will in due course return. And I also believe, along with many of those who are so at pains to explain that they’re not religious, that life does not end with the grave, but that there is a great hope of eternity in the presence of the God in whom I believe. But does that make me religious? I would argue strongly that it doesn’t. Indeed had Jesus been
religious he’d never have been crucified, but instead he took considerable issue with the religious leaders of his time, arguing passionately that personal faith was of far more value than religious zeal. And in his very famous chapter about love, when writing to the Church in Corinth, St Paul spends considerable time pointing out that any amount of religious fervour or spiritual gifts, without love, are absolutely worthless. So if you have an aversion to religion, but do inwardly have a personal, inner belief in a God you acknowledge you don’t understand, then ‘join the club’ – you’re in very good company. means that it’s more fire resistant than other tree species, the cork protects the trunk and main branches of the tree from any forest fire. Afterwards new shoots and leaves sprout quickly again from the tree and the canopy is restored. Other tree species sprout again from their bases or from seed so the oak has a clear evolutionary and height advantage. As well as providing a haven for wildlife the oak forests create quality soil and also reduce soil erosion from the wind and rain. The tree roots lock the soil in place and provide drainage channels for rainwater to absorb into the rich soil easily. This also reduces erosion downstream from the forests as storm water runoff is greatly reduced. Hydroelectric schemes and reservoirs benefit from cleaner water so increasing safety and efficiency. In Andalucía alone; about 150 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are stored in all its forests. Every year about10 million tonnes of CO2 are absorbed by the oak forests alone
– they really are the green lungs of the Mediterranean and vital to all our wellbeing. Because it’s renewing its bark, during its lifetime a harvested Cork Oak will store five times more carbon than a non-harvested tree. The cork is hand harvested by up to 5 people per tree using small axes; a tree will be about 25 years old when it’s first cropped. The trees live for over 200 years and can be harvested every 10 years or so. 300,000 tonnes of cork is produced each year in Europe with half of that coming from Portugal. All those wine corks add up to about 50,000 tonnes with the rest used mainly for flooring, olive oil stoppers and footwear. This equates to a billion Euros in business turnover a year and 30,000 jobs. The Romans used cork as floats for fishing nets; it’s been used in wine bottles for the last 400 years. Having worked in the wine trade and being keen on preserving our environment, I only buy wine that
has a natural cork. There is a romance about opening a bottle of wine and some things should be left as they are. Plastic stoppers and metal screw tops as alternatives use up the earths finite resources and create landfill. Plus without the cork being harvested these beautiful and vital habitats suffer. I will soon be holidaying amongst these splendid trees again in Grazalema, near Ronda. Though I doubt I will find anything like the ‘Whistler Tree’ located in Portugal. This great Oak has been harvested since 1820 and holds the record for the largest ever single tree harvest. A tonne and a quarter of cork was taken in 1990; enough for a veritable wine lake of over100,000 bottle corks!

Home Sales Climbed by 23.6% in May
The latest data published last week by the National Statistics Institute shows that sales of homes in Spain rose by 23.6% in May, compared to the same month of 2015, reaching a total of 36,425 transactions, and represents the highest figure registered since January 2013, when 39,920 transactions were carried out. With this increase, home sales have accumulated four consecutive months of year-on-year increases. However, even though the increase registered in May was quite significant, it was less than the growth recorded in April, when home sales climbed by 29% year-on-year.
The second hand market and, to a lesser extent, sales of new homes, were responsible for the May increase. Specifically, second hand home sales increased by 26.7% year-on-year, to a total of 29,422 transactions, while sales of new homes increased by 12% year-on-year, to reach a total of 7,003 transactions. ABC news reported that some 89.3% of the homes sold in May were free housing and 10.7% were subsidised housing. Sales of free housing rose by 22.7% in May year-on-year, reaching 32,512 transactions, while sales of subsidised housing rose by 31.7%, to a total of 3,913 transactions. In the first five months of the year, home sales accumulated an increase of 15.8% over the same period of 2015, as a result of the 21.9% increase registered in transactions on second hand homes, as transactions on new housing fell by 3.4%. Month-on-month (May over April), home sales increased by 3.5%, representing the lowest increase registered in this month in the past five years. In May, the highest numbers of home sales per 100,000 inhabitants were registered in the Balearic Islands (159) and La Rioja (155). Andalucía was the region to register most home sales in the fifth month of the year, with 7,013 transactions, followed by Catalonia (5,591), Valencia (5,082) and Madrid (4,952). In contrast, the regions which registered the least home sales transactions in May were La Rioja (380), Navarre (390) and Cantabria (416). In relative terms, home sales rose in all of Spain’s regions except for Navarre, which registered a decline of 20.2% compared with May 2015. The most significant increases were recorded for the Balearic Islands (+70%), La Rioja (+68.9%) and Murcia (+61.8%), while the most minor increases were recorded for Cantabria (+1.7%) and Galicia (+7.8%).

According to a recent study entitled “Spaniards and their relationship with housing in 2015”, carried out by property portal fotocasa, 48% of those currently paying for a mortgage on their home believe that the price of their home has declined since they acquired the property. In contrast, some 60% of homeowners whose homes are already paid off believe that the current value of their home is higher than when they bought it. Head of Research for the portal, Beatriz Toribio, explained: “Despite the crisis the housing market has suffered and the collapse of prices, more than half of the home owners feel that they could sell their

Waiting for Paco (With apologies to Samuel Beckett)
Antonio Poyato, sitting on a low mound is trying to take off his boot. He pulls at it with both hands, panting. He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again. Loco Paco arrives, dust covered and footsore. Paco: Still a long way to go. Shall we travel together? Poyato: Yes, as soon as I take this ruddy boot off and put it on again. Paco surveys the countryside, the Castle of Alqueria is in the far distance. Paco: It’s a vast wilderness out there, completely devoid of humanity. Poyato: Reminds me of my first wife, although she was a very attractive lady but unfortunately not from the front. Loco Paco stares blankly at Poyato, as if someone has forgotten to plug him in. Poyato: Can you smell burning? Paco: Sorry, indigestion. Poyato: Well? Shall we go? Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move. Poyato pulls a hip-flask from his pocket, he offers it to Paco. Poyato: Remitroot Whisky Paco? It keeps the demons at bay. Paco looks around for demons with a worried frown. Paco: I don’t like demons. They are always where you don’t expect them. Poyato: How do those people who don’t drink keep their demons at bay Paco? There are people who don’t drink you know! Paco: I know, I remember reading about them somewhere. Poyato: I don’t like sitting on this mound, nature has a habit of making a mad
dash up your trouser leg.
Paco: That’s why I wear gaiters and drink Remitroot whisky. Poyato: Well? Shall we go? Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move. Poyato: Do you understand life Paco? Paco: Enough to get by, enough to appear sane if I need anymore I ad-lib. Poyato: That doesn’t make sense Paco. Paco: No nothing does. Paco sighs, a long long sigh. Poyato: You can make a sigh last longer than a Mother-in-Law’s visit. Paco sighs Paco: Antonio?
How long were you married
Poyato:Four hundred and nine years. Can you remember your first love Paco. Paco:
Yes, I still have the receipt.
Poyato shielded his eyes and scanned the blueness of the morning sky. Poyato: There is intelligent life out there in space Paco. What do you think? Paco: Well they haven’t bothered to visit us, that must demonstrate a reasonable level of intelligence. Poyato: We aren’t alone you know! Paco: I know, I have my Saharan Dung Beetle, Benjy. Poyato stares blankly at Loco Paco, as if someone has forgotten to plug him in. Poyato: Back to Alqueria then? Well? Shall we go? Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move.
LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE QUESTION: My brother and I recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keeps the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor and with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that, in respect of my half, two taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on the half to me and 2. a taxable donation to my brother. Is this correct?
ANSWER: I am afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation).
The best solution, depending on the way the will was worded, would have been:
Option 1. If the will states that everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional). In this case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which makes it a donation) who would inherit the complete property directly from your father. Option 2 . If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership, which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary, claiming that you made a mistake.

The Struggle for Supremacy
Her Royal Highness Sayyida al Hurra, Somebody Else’s Cat, resides with us because she wishes it. She regards all other forms of life, including humans, to be inferior, and as such we should know our places. She is the most regal cat I have ever met, and also one of the most intelligent. She is capable of joinedup thinking and forward planning. She knows that ultimately a human is a lot bigger than a cat, even if the cat has superior armaments, so she organises her life to her own convenience without provoking confrontation. Between us there are unwritten but clearly understood rules of behaviour; She doesn’t back down, she simply circumnavigates any situations where a cat/human conflict could occur. However, the other day it all unravelled. It was hot and I needed a sit-down. Specifically in the breeze and the shade, on the recliner chair on the porch. ‘You can’t sit there,’ Pete said. ‘Si is on it.’ ‘I’ll ask her to move.’ ‘You can’t do that!’ ‘Watch me!’ I approached the chair with its incumbent cat with deference. ‘Si’ I said, ‘I want to sit there.’ The chair continued to be full of apparently sleeping cat. ‘I said, I want to sit there. Please get up.’ She raised her head. ‘You may stroke the top of my head.’ I stroked the top of her head. ‘Now please get up.’ She opened her citrus green eyes and stared at me. ‘There are other chairs.’ ‘I want to sit in this one. Get up.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk Please.’ I moved my hand towards her rear end in an encouraging gesture. With the speed of light a paw flashed towards my arm, just stopping short of contact. She narrowed her eyes and fixed me with a death glare of such ferocity that I am surprised that I did not spontaneously combust. ‘How dare you even dream it. Go away.’ ‘I said please.’ We locked eyes. It was clear to me that she had no intention of relinquishing ‘her’ chair, and that in a fist fight she would win, so I employed the advantage of greater body mass. I picked up a cushion and dropped it gently on top of her. ‘Move, or I’ll sit on you.’ I said, thinking that a hornet’s nest would be quite comfortable in comparison. She emerged from underneath the cushion and stalked off, waving her tail. Later I apologised to her and she came and sat on my lap. I was forgiven!

We are continuing with our classes (numbers permitting) at the Emerald Isle (Monday evening Rock & Roll 7:30pm), the Country Club (Tuesday Ballroom & Latin 8pm) and the Madhouse (Thursday Ballroom & Latin 8pm) so if you want to polish your dance shoes come and join one of our fun classes. Singles are also always welcome. If you want more information call Lyn on 635 584 431 or 966 188 430 or email strictlydancelyn@gmail.com Until September Keep Dancing!

a food diary of what they put on the table. F o o d b e c a m e cheaper – a trend that continues t o d a y . Shopping for food took up just 11 per cent of household i n c o m e in 2000, compared to 24 per cent in 1974. In 1974 only 15 per cent of households owned a freezer and shopping lists included tinned milk pudding and canned peas and potatoes. By 2000, families were buying frozen chips, peas and even cakes. Home cooks moved away from buying raw ingredients to make a meal from scratch towards processed food and takeaways. Out goes lard, lamb chops, corned beef, cucumbers, fresh tomatoes and packs of sugar, while in come skimmed milk, reduced-fat spreads, mineral water and chicken, curries, pies, pasties and puddings. Fewer eggs are eaten in 2000, but sales of crisps and snacks are much higher. Pasta, frozen chips, honey, frozen breaded fish and yoghurt also make more of an appearance. In 1989 households were asked for the first time whether they owned a microwave, and since then the number of ready meals we buy has more than doubled. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: ‘Food is the heart and soul of our society and this data not only shows what we were eating 40 years ago, but how a change in culture has led to a food revolution. ‘The internet has brought quality produce to our doorsteps, pop-up restaurants are showcasing the latest trends and global cuisines are as common as fish and chips. ‘We can look beyond what, where or how previous generations were eating and pinpoint the moments that changed our habits for good.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

One-pan Spanish fish stew
Ingredients: handful flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped zest and juice 1 lemon 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to serve 1 medium onion, finely sliced 500g floury potatoes, cut into small chunks, no larger than 2cm cubes 1 tsp paprika pinch cayenne pepper 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 fish stock cube 200g raw peeled king prawns ½ a 410g/14oz can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 500g skinless fish fillets, cut into very large chunks
In a small bowl, mix the parsley with ½ the garlic and lemon zest, then set aside. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large sauté pan. Throw in the onion and potatoes, cover the pan, then sweat everything for about 5 mins until the onion has softened. Add the remaining oil, garlic and spices, then cook for 2 mins more. Pour over the lemon juice and sizzle for a moment. Add the tomatoes, ½ a can of water and crumble in the stock. Season with a little salt, then cover the pan. Simmer everything for 15-20 mins until the potatoes are just cooked. Stir through the prawns and chickpeas, then nestle the fish chunks into the top of the stew. Reduce the heat and recover the pan, then cook for about 8 mins, stirring very gently once or twice. When the fish is just cooked through, remove from the heat, scatter with the parsley mix, then bring the dish to the table with the bottle of olive oil for drizzling over and some crusty bread, if you want.

The C Word - TV Drama

“Losing someone to cancer really resets your perspective. It makes me value life, cherish my loved ones and be grateful for every day I have with them.”(Sheridan Smith) 4.2 million people recently tuned in to watch an outstanding and powerful performance by Sheridan Smith (recently seen in Cilla) and whose credits include the sitcom Gavin & Stacey, Two Pints of Lager & A Packet of Crisps, Quartet with Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon to more highbrow Ibsen. A versatile actress and an accomplished singer. Staring cancer in the face may be construed as a bravado act but it takes a lot of courage. Smith, affectionately known as the queen of the biopic agreed to play Lisa Lynch, a journalist, or more specifically a magazine editor. Lynch was adamant that her alter ego should be played by Smith and only Smith. For the latter it became a “personal labour of love” in spite of being a “uniquely testing” role. Once being diagnosed with breast cancer at 28, Lisa decided to write a humorous and personal blog entitled Alright tit. Once it went viral she soon discovered that she had a massive following including Stephen Fry who described it as “funny and brilliant.” The blog gave her a purpose especially during some dark moments of despair. The blog inspired her and her family to deal with the disease: “You’ve made one underemployed woman with swollen joints and one missing joint very happy.” With the success of the blog came the book and The Bullshit was the adopted name for her cancer. Nicole Taylor wrote the tv script and Simon Lewis produced the drama. Tim Kirkby directed it. It’s 2008 and Lisa and Pete (played by Paul Nicholls, ex-Eastender) have been happily married for 18 months. Lisa’s discovery of a lump is taken in her stride and she gloats to her friends who want a feel! The atmosphere is excitable as the couple share their exciting and forthcoming plans to tour the States taking in New York, Washington, Carolina, Georgia and Miami. These are exciting times surely? Dreams of a lifetime. Once Pete accompanies his wife to the hospital to investigate the lump, the atmosphere changes and the acting takes on a new dimension-frighteningly real. It’s every women’s nightmare. The mammogram shows that it’s not a cyst and the prognosis isn’t good-the signs are consistent with breast cancer. The consultant informs a shocked Lisa that a biopsy will determine whether the lump is invasive or non-invasive. The breast can’t be saved because of the size and it becomes necessary to have an immediate operation. The couple find it difficult to respond; they are dumb-struck as one would expect. It’s certainly not what they expected to hear. Lisa’s parents and brother, Jamie are also shocked but prove a well-needed

tower of strength. More bad news- the cancer is invasive, a tumour of 5 cm and the sad news that she is hovering between stages 2/3 out of a possible 4. The next stage is a skin-sparing mastectomy where muscle and skin is taken from her back.”I want this thing out of me, cut me open, take my nipple, take the lot, scar me up, just get it out.” The operation is successful and the cancer is removed. At this point, Lisa felt like a “museum exhibit, a creature to be viewed” and she blogs: “ding dong, the lump is dead.” Unfortunately, that is not the end-radiotherapy, (26 sessions), chemo (6 rounds) and reconstruction. An emotional breaking point devastates Lisa when she has to come to terms with the fact that she will never be able to have any children. Her cancer is hormonal receptive and any IVF treatment would accelerate her cancer. The treatment inevitably causes side effects as most of us know-the hair falls out, the eyelashes fall out and there are frequent bouts of sickness. Smith agreed to have her head shaved and as Lisa, she calls herself a “smackhead” resorting to hoodies to attempt to hide her baldness and not resemble Uncle Fester. One particular poignant moment that shows how traumatic it all was for Lisa was when she was in the advanced stages of the disease. We see Smith soaking in the bath, unable to get out, trying to call Pete for assistance and struggling to make any recognisable sounds. He carries her as if she is a fragile invalid, wraps a couple of towels around her and gently places her on the bed. The scene proved to be a particularly painful one for Smith whose brother Julian died from cancer when he was 18.
The drama shows inevitable moments of despair but there are light-hearted moments and displays of happiness. Lisa concludes with “There is as much to mourn as there is to celebrate.” Jamie’s wedding was one of those moments, a “spectacular” day for Lisa who danced the night away feeling almost cancerfree. The Bullshit had taken away her independence, her optimism, her hopes and tentative plans. The book was written when Lisa was hopeful that she would survive-we know that many people do survive. Lisa’s therapist highly recommended the book telling sufferers it was “brilliant, funny and honest” one that would help people come to terms with cancer. “Cancer forces you to act and soon the acting becomes the reality because you’re so bloody determined to put out the signals.” The book has raised awareness of cancer, the tv drama has cemented that awareness in order to save more precious lives. A winning formula.

Textiles and Pottery
This Spanish-country style dining room (comedor) is adorned with Spanish-inspired elements, from the antique Mexican pottery to the colourful paintings. "The paintings above the shelf depict a Spanish matador whose heart has been broken by a senorita," says artist Carole Meyer. Carole draped ethnic fabrics on the dining chairs and also hung them on a traditional Mexican shelf, which adds texture and colour to the informal space. The high ceilings, arches and thick walls are typical characteristics of Spanishstyle architecture. The hand-painted pottery across the table and shelf adds extra Mexican flair. Traditional Accessories
"Inspired by a Spanish matador's Suit of Lights, the vibrant colors of this master bedroom are a joy to wake up to," says Carole Meyer. Details like the custom-made mirror cloth pillows and star-shaped recessed lighting give the room a magical touch. The weathered chair in the corner is draped with a huipil, a traditional Mexican garment. The embroideries on the huipil have specific meanings and reflect one's cultural identity. The round bedside table is covered with an African kente cloth and topped with an antique Mexican saint and silver objects from India. Carole placed weathered chests next to and at the foot of the bed for a rustic look. The dark iron candlestick lamps with red silk shades bring an elegant touch, and the custom-made arched headboard resembles doorway arches popular in Spanish architecture. Photography by Carole Meyer

Girls Power Wins at Indalo Bowling Club
Girl power came out on top when two of the Club’s top lady bowlers reached the final of the very popular 2016 Handicap Singles competition recently played at Indalo. Unlike golf the higher the handicap the better the bowler, with the higher handicap players giving shots to the lower handicaps. 40 bowlers entered and there were some very competitive matches over the course of a few days, played in very hot weather. The outstanding match of the tournament was the semi final played between Maggie Holmes, an ex Spanish squad player and Debbie Colquhoun, a current Spanish squad player (both with a handicap of 9). One spectator said the match was good enough to be “On the telly” and on the last end the score was tied 20 to 20. Maggie had the last wood and managed to get a very kind
“clip” off another wood which gave her the winning shot. A fantastic match with some wonderful bowling and it was sad that someone had to finish second! The other semi final was played between Ann Reynolds and John Mannall, the last man standing! Both played a really good game with a lot of accurate steady bowling but Ann came out on top 22 to 16. The final between Maggie and Ann was competed in blistering heat but they battled on and gave the spectators a great match to watch. For a while it was neck and neck but then Maggie forged ahead and won 22 to 12. Many thanks to all the markers who also braved the heat and to John Colquhoun for the organisation that was necessary to make this a very enjoyable competition. www.indalobowlingclub.org

Henrik Stenson says Phil Mickelson pushed him to victory Open champion
Tel 950 680 007
"I knew that he would ultimately come through and win and I'm happy that he did. "I'm just disappointed that it was at my expense. It's probably the best I've played and not won." The quality of the battle between Stenson and Mickelson, who dropped just four shots all week, was emphasised by the fact, as runner-up, he finished 11 shots better off than third-placed JB Holmes. That was a margin wider even than the 10 shots that separated secondplaced Jack Nicklaus, following his famous 'Duel in the Sun' defeat by Tom Watson, from third-placed Hubie Green just down the Ayrshire coast at Turnberry in 1977. "I don't remember being in a match like that, where we've separated ourselves from the field by so many strokes," said Mickelson. "That's probably why it's disappointing in that I don't have a point where I can look back and say, 'I should have done that or had I only done this.' "I played a bogey-free round of 65 on the final round of a major - usually that's good enough to do it, and I got beat." Bbc.com
Henrik Stenson says it was the fighting quality of beaten opponent Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon that helped him win his first major. Stenson, 40, hit an eight-under-par 63 - the lowest final-day Open-winning round - to record a tournament record 20-under total and win by three shots. "It was a great match," said the Swede, runner-up to Mickelson in 2013. "I knew he wasn't going to back down at any point and that made it easier. I knew I had to keep on pushing." Stenson, who has had one runner-up finish and four third places in majors, added: "It makes it even more special to beat a competitor like Phil. "He has been one of the best to play the game in the last 20 years, so to come out on top after such a fight with him over these four days is amazing. "He told me earlier in the season I was deserving of a major championship and I said to him, 'You'll probably not like it if you are on the end of it' but I want to thank him for a great couple of days." Stenson, who will climb a place to fifth in the world rankings, had most recently challenged at a major when he finished third behind Rory McIlroy and Mickelson at the 2014 US PGA Championship. While success in majors may have previously eluded Stenson, in 2013 the year Mickelson beat him to The Open title at Muirfield - he became the first man to top the money list on both the American and European orders of merit. "My previous record in majors is not something you want to keep on hearing, but I just felt like this was going to be my turn," added the man from Gothenburg, who now lives in Florida. Magnanimous Mickelson The American was not surprised to see Stenson lift the Claret Jug. "I'm happy for Henrik," said the 46-year-old. "He's really a great champion. "We've been friends for some time. I've always thought that he is one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that major championships are perfectly suited for him.
