BRITISH PASSENGER JAILED FOR THREATENING TO KILL PILOT ON EASYJET FLIGHT TO MÁLAGA
Martin Johnson, 56, originally from Scotland but living in Harlow, Essex, had drunk one of two full bottles of white wine he bought from the duty free in Bristol before take-off, left it in the toilet and urinated all over the cubicle. According to Bristol prosecutor Janine Wood, a member of the cabin crew found the mess and the empty bottle, and the pilot, after being told about the situation, announced over the tannoy that the flight would be returning to base. At this point, Johnson became ‘verbally
violent’, Ms Wood recalled, stating that if this happened, he was going to stab and punch the pilot.” “I’m going to knife the air hostess and kill everyone on board,” he added, according to witnesses. Johnson’s behaviour led to ‘altercations’ with many of the 153 passengers, most of whom were heading to the Costa del Sol for their holidays and were delayed by a whole day as a result of the aircraft turning round and going back to Bristol. His threats and the aborted flight cost their airline tens
of thousands of pounds, the prosecutor revealed. Johnson, who was arrested immediately upon landing, told the court that he had ‘not realised he was so drunk’ and ‘could not remember’ the threats, which were heard by numerous witnesses. Judge Michael Longman said the accused’s conduct had disrupted holidays, work meetings and flight connections, as well as causing ‘fear and alarm’ among passengers. thinkspain

SPAIN PAYING €300M A YEAR IN PENSIONS TO PEOPLE WHO ARE DEAD
The monthly payment to the dead totalled €25.3 million last year. MORE than €300 million was paid in pensions to the dead last year due to the government’s ‘holes and deficiencies’. A National Audit Office report claims that 30,000 officially registered deceased received pension payments in 2015. The monthly payment to the dead totalled €25.3 million. The Organisation for Economic CoOperation and Development’s (OECD) 2011 statistics show that Spain spent over 10.5% of its GDP on pensions, well over
the 7.9% OECD average. The Audit Office spoke out against the National Social Security Institute (INSS) concerning the systemic failure. A spokesman said: “The INSS doesn’t employ effective controls over who it pays pensions to, and neither do the banks through which pensions are paid.” It comes at a bad time for Spain, which is in the midst of austerity measures and faces EU sanctions over its unreined deficit. http://www.expatica.com

‘‘
WE all know, from our own experience or that of close By pre-planning now you fix the cost of friends, how traumatic it is to have to cope with your funeral at todays paperwork, officials and bureaucracy at a time when we prices, which are inflation proof. are emotionally vulnerable. And yet, that is precisely the situation that we find ourselves in when there is no funeral plan in place. This time of grief can be made much easier on your family by having a pre-planned and pre-paid funeral plan ready in the event of your death. Plans start at € 3,390 and payment can be made in euros or sterling, either as a lump sum or by a deposit and regular instalments, which attract no interest. Plans are not subject to IVA, furthermore they do not charge a set-up fee, administration fee or interest. Plan benefits are transferable to the UK and other EU countries. THE SPANISH DAY LABOURERS AND UNIVERSITY GRADUATES HEADING TO FRANCE TO PICK GRAPES
Some 15,000 Spaniards will be heading to the wine-producing areas of France this month The grape harvest in Spain's leading wine producing region, La Rioja. The grape harvest in Spain's leading wine producing region, La Rioja. /EFE In early September, José Antonio Narváez will head for France to work on his 13th grape harvest. The 31-year old, from the tiny community of Alcalá del Valle, in Cadiz province, made his first trip when he was aged 18, and has only missed one since. “I went with my uncle, who is in charge of the team I work with,” he explains, adding: “Of the 16 in the group, 11 of us are cousins or uncles.” Over the course of the year he also takes part in other harvests: “olive picking or green asparagus: it’s very
typical in my village.” Narváez and his 15 travelling companions are part of the 15,000 or so Spaniards that labour u n i o n s say will be heading to France this year to take part in the grape harvest. In 1972, the figure was 96,000, dropping to 10,000 in 1992, when Spain’s economy was enjoying a lengthy period of growth. Labour unions say that around 20% of first-time grape pickers are aged under 30 and have a university degree. Labour unions say that most Spaniards who travel to France work overtime, generally bringing their wages up to €2,000. The campaign begins at the end of August and generally lasts a month, although there are areas of France where the harvest extends until the end of October. Celia Estévez says she hopes to travel to France this year for the second time, and has already contacted the head of the team she worked with eight years ago. “He is the guy in the village who deals with
this and he said he would see what he can do,” she explains. But with barely two weeks to go before the group leaves, she still hasn’t heard anything. Unemployed, Estévez is aged 28 and lives in Motril, a small seaside town in Granada province. “This year I worked for 20 days selling fruit, and then two weeks in May as a cleaner. She’s concerned she hasn’t been contacted yet, but says she won’t go without a contract. “It would be crazy to just turn up there,” she says, a view shared by Spain’s two main labour unions, UGT and CO. “Don’t travel without a signed contract from France and don’t go unless there is organized transport,” advises Pedro Hojas of CO. José Antonio Narváez says he expects to earn around €1,700. Celia says she
earned €1,570 for three weeks work, six days a week, from 4.45am to 12.15. The minimum salary this year is €9.67 an hour for a 35-hour week, a significant improvement on Spain, where the minimum wage is €6.50 an hour. But labour unions say that most Spaniards who travel to France work overtime, generally bringing their wages up to €2,000. The typical Spanish grape picker is male, aged between 30 and 45, with a primary education and experience working in agriculture. Most work in groups of between eight and 20 people. Of Spain’s regions, Andalusia provides the largest number of workers who head to France each year: 11,000, or 75% of the grape-picking workforce. http://elpais.com

ARBOLEAS FIESTA
THE ROLE OF SPANISH FIESTA IN SPAIN
As in any other culture, celebrations are a basic form of social and cultural integration, and serve as a relief for the daily struggles, opening a time of joy and carelessness, and are a mirror of the tradition and a lever for it to pass onto the younger generations. They are also a means for sharing, for strengthening the community’s bonds through its history and tradition and -of Your Local Painter for Arboleas & Surrounding Areas course- for having fun. of the fiesta is a basic one. People gather on the streets to celebrate, eat, drink and dance, accompanied by a nice warm weather that can be enjoyed almost anytime from the spring to the fall. And since most of these fiestas take place during the summertime, it wouldn’t be a bad idea either to spend a summer in Spain, too! Also, the wine culture in Spain and the quality of Spanish food have generated their own form of tourism, which can be perfectly combined with a tour around the most notable Spanish Fiestas, turning your visit into a feast for the senses. These elements, together with the liveliness of its people, make of Spain a delightful destination in which tradition and modernity converge to create a unique travel experience.

WINDOWS TOOLS TO REMEMBER PART 2
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT I believe in the 3-2-1 method of data backup. What is this mystical 3-2-1 that has nothing to do with a popular 80’s TV show? It is a method where you have 3 copies of your precious information, on 2 different external devices (External Hard Drive, memory stick, DVD disk, etc) and 1 of those copies away from your normal work place. I have my third copy, on an External Drive at my friend’s house. Better safe than sorry! Only one other suggestion. Do your data backup’s regularly. Whenever you get several new files or even 1 important new file, do a backup. If done properly, only the new or changed files will be added, making the job quick and painless ;-) The Windows Reliability Monitor is a 2 edged sword. Even though you may not realize it, Windows is automatically recording all hardware and software changes. These changes are available to Microsoft and after reading their conditions yesterday, I’m even more wary of allowing them any information that I can prevent! Even so, these readings are saved to the useful (but hidden) Windows Reliability Monitor. You should check this every few months to see how your system is performing and address any issues. One thing that we can learn from history is when thinks start to go wrong and this can suggest a course of action to correct and then prevent a re-occurrence. Finally We have the Resource Monitor.
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help, you can contact me at make to appointment at my workshop or clinic (which is at Maloan’s bar in Albox). Last week we looked at some of the ‘Hidden’ Windows tools that can repair and maintain your computer. This week I would like to finish off with a few more that can make life easier. These tools are: “File History Backup”; “Windows Reliability Monitor”; “Windows System Image” and “Resource Monitor”. The first of these is “Windows System Image”. Now there are a number of other system image programs out there, but if you make one with windows it is easier to do a recovery (more on that later). To do this you will need an external drive. Go to the control panel, then to File History and in the bottom left corner your will see “System image Backup”. Click on that. From here you will be walked through the process of making a ‘one-off’ system image. Windows 7 has the same thing but hidden in the “Backup and Restore” section of the control panel. So that if your system will absolutely not start, you can recover to a working system in under an hour. This is better than the 2-3 days to build it from scratch! Now for the general maintenance. File History Backup is the next thing to consider. What is it? Simply, it is the task of making sure that you have a backup of your precious For further information or advice on pictures, videos, computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk and documents.
Microbeads - the Tiny Killers A good few years ago; the boffins at various chemical companies decided that we were all very dirty and started added plastic microbeads to liquid soaps and cleansing scrubs so we could all scrub away the dirt that was hiding on our smelly selves. No need any more for existing natural solutions; as adding tiny polyurethane beads to soap was the new way. A single 200 ml bottle of exfoliating facial scrub can contain up to 300,000 beads or put into weight form; about 20 grams of plastic beads per bottle. The beauty industry stepped up to the breach and marketed ‘age defying’ beauty creams filled with the tiny plastic beads. When these miracle products are rubbed on the face; unwitting ladies (and gentlemen) magically look younger whilst thousands of these beads some measuring just 10 Micrometres across that’s one hundredth of a millimetre or 0.00039 inch in old money; fill their wrinkles. Toothpaste manufactures also saw the advantage of adding these beads to their products so cavities across the globe are filled with plastic. Micro-beads also add the shiny shimmer found in lip gloss and nail polish. Washing off the face scrub puts beads straight down the plug hole. Licking lips or kissing others with lip gloss on; or brushing teeth lets nature takes its course and eventually these beads flush down the toilet. Being so small; sewage plants cannot capture them. Instead they flow into rivers, lakes and eventually the
Well the Olympics are well on their way now, and I for one am probably spending far too much time following them. Having, 60 years ago been inspired by Britain Derek Johnson’s Silver medal (should have been gold!) in the Melbourne Olympic 800 mtrs; by Irishman Ron Delaney’s record breaking gold in the 1500 at the same games, and Gordon Pirie, my outright idol at the time’s numerous records that year, culminating in being disappointed that he only gained Silver in the 5000 mtrs, I was left with aspirations of similarly making a name for myself in middle distance running. Sadly, although moderately successful for a while, I was never able to give the huge commitment and absolutely focussed effort required, even in those days, to progress beyond the basic National standards, so I stand in awe of those who have. And watching these modern day Olympians, and recognising their commitment and dedication as they frequently work through massive physical and emotional pain to achieve the standards they set themselves, I’m necessarily reminded of the words of St Paul, as he compared the Christian life with that of Olympians
of his day. So reminding his readers of the need for discipline, commitment and training in their daily lives, he concludes by urging them to “forget the past and, reaching forward to what lies ahead, press on toward the finishing line to win the crown of God’s call in Christ Jesus.” And yes, we do need to work at living the Christian life. We do need a great deal of self-discipline and absolute commitment to stay the course. And yes, we need to learn from, yet forget the many errors we’ve made in the past and concentrate on the way ahead, as any athlete must. So, in the words of Timothy Dudley-Smith’s great hymn “Lord for ourselves; in living power remake us- self on the cross, and Christ upon the throne, past put behind us, for the future take us: Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.”

sea. Then chemistr y kicks in as the tiny spheres petrochemical ingredients attract pollutants. Nasty dangerous things such DDT PCBs and flame retardants are absorbed by the tiny spheres and become toxic time bombs. Nature also gets confused as fish, seagulls, and turtles mistake these beads for fish eggs and gulp them down so poisoning the food chain that we all rely on. A large part of the 8 million tonnes of plastic that enters the sea comes from these products. A single micro-bead can become a million times more toxic that the water around it; Sushi anyone? Luckily many countries have banned these products with the USA and Canada leading the way. Consumer outcry and public petitions have led Companies like Crest toothpaste to stop using microbeads. L’Oreal who own Body Shop and Johnson and Johnson are in the process to phase them out. One well known Company called St. Ives already use apricot pits and coca husks in their products. The EC first proposed a ban on micro beads in 2013, many countries agreed but as usual when environment issues may hurt company profits the current UK government favours an industry led
volunteer ban. A petition with 150,000 signatures was handed into No.10 a few months ago to try and reverse the UK’s position. If any of the following scary sounding ingredients are marked on the side of a tube or bottle; polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate or polymethyl methacrylate; plastic microbeads are contained within. Flushed down the drain after use; they pollute the rivers and seas further. It’s all a con anyway as microbeads are smooth compared to natural alternatives; so customers need to use more to get the same effect which means more profit. Natural products containing ground oats or baking powder are good for gentle exfoliating. Almond shells, walnut husks, jojoba beads and coffee grinds give more of an effect. For a full over major scrub; look for salt and even sugar scrubs. Arm and Hammer toothpaste uses baking soda. Get checking those labels and save our seas!

SPAIN STILL HAS A STOCK OF OVER HALF A MILLION UNSOLD HOMES
PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT
THE BEST PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! Since the boom years and the subsequent bursting of the real estate bubble, the housing market in Spain is gradually absorbing the excess stock of unsold new homes. According to a Spanish Ministry of Public Works’ report published recently containing data on the 2015 new housing stock, as at 31st December 2015, the total number of unsold new homes in Spain stood at 513,848 units, which is 5.6% less than at the end of 2014, when the total stood at 544,363. With this latest reduction in the housing stock, the market has now accumulated six consecutive years of decreases – specifically, since 2009, when the total number of unsold new homes reached its peak of 649,780 units unsold. Moreover, this 5.6% reduction is the second highest of the last six years, behind only the 6.9% reduction registered in 2012. In 2015, the excess stock decreased in all regions except for Madrid – where the reactivation of residential development was most evident – and in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The most significant reductions in excess stock, all over 10%, were recorded in the provinces of: Navarra; Vizcaya; Lugo; Guadalajara; Málaga and Cádiz. Moreover, the three regions of Valencia, Catalonia and Andalucía together account for almost half of the excess housing stock (49.53%), while the provinces with the highest percentages of stock
are: Alicante (8.42%); Barcelona (8.34%); Madrid (8.2%); Castellón (5.18%); Valencia (4.91%); Murcia (4.7%); Toledo (4.36%) and Almería (4.02%). Experts warn that it will be very difficult to totally absorb this oversupply of unsold housing, the majority of which were built during the boom, since a portion of this stock has even been rated as “unsellable” by developers. El Mundo reported that the unsold new homes most difficult to sell are usually located in less attractive areas inland and mainly on the coast, which today cannot compete with the new, high quality developments in good locations, and that is why the off-plan homes are once again gaining ground over turn-key housing (housing stock). Finally, comparing the new excess housing data with the total number of homes in Spain, it should be noted that the current excess stock represents 2.01% of all homes that exist in the country. This percentage (stock over the total residential park of homes) rises to 6.29% in Castellón province, to 5.32% in Toledo and to 5.19% in Almería, the three areas most affected. kyero

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS OF SPANISH PROPERTY ARE ‘INCREASINGLY DISCERNING’
International property buyers are becoming choosier when buying in Spain, says a top agency. That is why Lucas Fox International Properties is launching five designer bespoke homes, Anamaya Villas, on the Costa Del Sol, in the prime residential area of Nueva Andalucia. There has been growing demand for highquality designer properties on the Costa del Sol during the last two to three years, particularly from France, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, but also increasingly from the US and Middle East, says Lucas Fox. The four-bed properties with pools are designed by renowned Argentina-born architect Juan Salvador Shvartzberg, and are based on the principle of being ‘at one with nature’ with a specific emphasis on space and light.
Anamaya Villas is one of around 15 new developments to be launched on this popular stretch of coastline this year. It is expected to be completed in Spring 2018. Stephen Lahiri, Director of Lucas Fox Marbella, says, “We are finding that our clients are becoming increasingly discerning in their property search, which is why we have taken on the Anamaya Villas Development. “The project offers potential buyers a plethora of unique selling points – unrivalled views, quality, privacy, security and an enviable lifestyle. According to the Spanish Ministry of Development, in the province of Malaga (which includes Marbella) both the number and value of transactions has increased steadily since the start of 2013. In Marbella itself, the number of transactions was up more than 90% during the same period. Asking prices are also up – Spanish portal Idealista suggests that prices have increased by 1.5% in Malaga province in the last quarter. “We are seeing what is effectively a two-speed recovery in the property market. As prices continue to consolidate in inland areas of Spain, sought-after locations such as the Costa del Sol, Barcelona, Madrid and the Balearics are seeing price rises. “We are obviously concerned about the repercussions of Brexit on the property market here, but expect it to affect the lower end of
the market.
We believe that Anamaya offers a unique opportunity for shrewd buyers looking for both a financial and lifestyle investment in one of Europe’s most beautiful destinations.” Leading Spanish homebuilder Taylor Wimpey España agrees that buyer interest is rising. Sales & Marketing Director, Marc Pritchard, says, “Momentum is definitely building within the Spanish property sector and I think we can say that this season, in all terms, is looking to be one of the best in many years, if not the best ever for Spain and the Islands.” Taylor Wimpey Espana’s has just launched Panorama Mar, on Punta Prima Beach close to Torrevieja. A Joint Venture project with Grupo Gomendio, this private residential complex offers two and three-bedroom apartments starting from €234,000+VAT. Every resident will be able to use the three communal swimming pools and Jacuzzi facility, as well as being granted direct access to the beach promenade. Each apartment in the first phase is south facing and therefore blessed with spacious terraces and stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea. Punta Prima is just 30-minutes from San Javier Airport in Murcia and 45-minutes from Alicante International Airport.

Licences for Housing Reforms Up 2% to May
Between the months of January and May of this year, a total of 10,676 licences were authorised for the reform or restoration of homes in Spain, which represents an increase of 2% over the same period of the previous year, when some 10,463 permits were granted. Thus, according to data from the Ministry of Public Works, the number of licences for housing reforms are placed in positive until May, after closing 2015 with an increase of 13.4% in the year as a whole. In 2014, permits for housing reforms accumulated four consecutive years of declines and registered a record low in the Ministry’s historical series, before the downward trend was broken by the increase recorded in 2015. Moreover, the number of licences authorised for housing extensions increased by 19.8% up until May, reaching a total of 676 permits. Encouraging housing refurbishment was one of the initiatives of the Spanish Government in recent years, with the approval of the Law on Rehabilitation, Regeneration and Urban Renewal, as well as the State Plan of Rental Housing and Rehabilitation 2013-
2016, where Government g r a n t s for these activities were made available.
El Mundo also reported that, with respect to licence s g r a n t e d to build apartments in blocks, the average size of these apartments between January and May of 2016 was 118.6 m2, which represents an increase compared with the average size in the same period of last year of 111.6 m2, according to the Ministry’s data. Maintaining this positive evolution until the end of the year, new apartments would accumulate three consecutive years of increases in their average size, following the decline registered in 2013. In that year, the average size stood at 106.7 m2, which was below the 107.8 m2 recorded in 2012. The average apartment size then went on to rise to 112.3 m2 in 2014 and to 113.7 m2 in 2015. In contrast, so far in 2016, the average size of individual family homes has moderated to 200.7 m2, compared with 201.3 m2 recorded a year earlier. kyero

THE RESTORATION
Rodriguez was on the run. Having declared himself ‘perpetual dictator’ and renamed Remitroot, ‘Roddyroot100’ he managed to destroy the product’s goodwill built up over two millennia. Alqueria was on the brink of ruin. Rodriquez had now ‘legged it’ to the dark side of the Sierra Nevada where he works as ‘Artificial Inseminator’ for the ‘La Alpujarra and District Ant Farm’. It fell once more to Manuela, Antonio Poyato and Loco Paco to sort out Rodriquez’s handiwork. To be more precise Manuela. Poyato was totally absorbed in restoring his beloved Remitroot plants to the healthy specimens they once were. Loco Paco was attending a Saharan Dung Beetle convention in Albacete. He was booked to address the conference on the contributions made by the North African Scarab to our understanding of quantum physics. Now Alqueria’s Manuela had three great passions in life. Firstly, the desire for a fair deal for all. The sharing of Alqueria’s wealth by all in the community. To each according to their needs, and a belief in the dignity of man. Secondly Men and thirdly, her hair. If Manuela didn’t spend so long messing about with her hair she could have won the Nobel Peace
VIEWPOINT
Prize and conquered every male on the Peninsular. Manuela was Alquerian which meant Spanish with Moorish blood in her veins. Her olive skin, almond eyes and raven hair gave testament to this. Like all Spanish women hair came in for a great deal of attention, it’s a high maintenance item. Now however, fallen on her pleasantly chiselled shoulders is the task of restoring the Republic and its fortunes to pre-Rodriquez days. Manuela allowed Rodriquez to rot in the foothills of the Nevada. She didn’t believe in the adage that friends should be kept close and enemies closer. To be closer then her male friends, he would have to marry her, a terrible thought for both concerned. Manuela is resourceful and innovative, one can ask any man in the Pueblo under the age of seventy for verification of this. She began at once to clear up the mess. The Republican Constitution of Alqueria was once more put in place together with its grand ideals which is the hallmark of the proud people of Village State. It’s written on the back of a ‘fag’ packet and propping up the wonky leg of a table in the Bar La Casa Devante. As for Remitroot Manuela needed to re-establish its name in the international community of drunkards and debauchers. She excelled herself with the creation of RemitEx, a Remitroot exhibition to be held in the Village. The plants various properties would be publicly demonstrated with abundant free samples of its various products to all. What could go wrong?
PUZZLE SOLUTION
Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever. This improving piece of advice was left to us by the long dead poet Charles Kingsley. I like to think that I lead a blameless life. My slate is clean apart from the parking ticket and the speeding ticket, mention of which will even now cause me to spit feathers! This week, however, I had had enough of being good. I decided to wallow in self-indulgence. I have had a jigsaw puzzle stored in the kitchen for 18 months; Every time I pass it I hear it call gently ‘Do me.’ I decided that it had waited long enough, its day had come! However doing a jigsaw isn’t straightforward; First I had to find a large enough piece of cardboard to accommodate the puzzle in its formative stages. Then I had to find a flat surface of sufficient size upon which to put the cardboard. The only surface flat enough and large enough was the kitchen table. The kitchen table, however, is the domain of Mr Tommy Fluffipants. He is not allowed on the table though he is allowed on his bed. Therefore if his bed is on the table and he is on his bed he is not on the table! He sleeps most of the day on his bed, thus he is used to having his bed on the table for most of the day. But if my puzzle was on the table, then his bed had to go elsewhere. Although I explained this to him he didn’t believe me - He jumped on the table, landed

FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WE ALWAYS MAKE TO OUR CLIENTS AFTER THEY HAVE PURCHASED A PROPERTY IN SPAIN. Question: I have just purchased a property in Spain. Is there any useful advice you can give us: Answer: • Do not become a tax resident of Spain before discussing all the pros and cons with your solicitor. It may or may not be in your interest, depending on your circumstances. To join the system is a half hour job while to get out of the system is complex. There are many reasons both in favour of and against becoming a tax resident in Spain and they require careful consideration. • If you become a resident, before deciding where to keep you savings and in what products (ie. Where? In Spain, in the UK, in Ireland, in Jersey etc. And in what products? Deposits, condos de inversion, Spanish
compliant and non-compliant bonds, shares etc.) you should discuss these matters with a solicitor accustomed to cross/ border estates. This will ensure your option is the most sensible from the point of view of both tax efficiency and future probate complexity. Over the years we have seen many cases of unnecessarily complicated estates, resulting from greedy and or ignorant financial advisors who have sold unnecessarily complex financial products with the excuse of saving inheritance tax, that have then caused nasty surprises for the heirs. • Make sure you make a Spanish will. It is extremely important that they are done by a firm that has experience with probate. • Have somebody lined up to present your non-resident imputed income tax returns each year.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk on the uncompleted puzzle and frightened himself to kingdom come in the process! Now that he understood the magnitude of the problem he thought about it for a while and came up with the solution – he would sleep on whichever of the sofas took his fancy! There was just one problem with this solution – Tommy is accustomed to snacking throughout the day from his food bowl, which lives next to his bed, safely out of dog reach. What was the poor little cat to do? He couldn’t go on the table and his food couldn’t go off it? He soon had the solution – he searches me out, trots back into the kitchen and fixes me with an appealing round-eyed gaze. ‘I’m hungry. My food is on the table, but I’m not allowed to jump on the table, so you’ll have to lift me on instead. You wouldn’t let me starve, would you?’ So I lift him on. Several times a day!

MERCADONA LAUNCHES NEW COLD MEAT RANGE FOR VEGETARIANS
People’s eating habits are changing. And for anyone in the food industry, they have to take note if they want to continue to make money. It is a fact that more and more people are refusing to eat meat, or even any meat or dairy by-products, and, as a result, the number of vegetarians and vegans is multiplying rapidly. For this reason, Mercadona, one of the first supermarkets to introduce vegetable-based milk instead of cow’s milk to its stores, has teamed up with Noel, a Spanish company that specialises in the production and distribution of cold meats, hams, fresh meat and
La
prepared products. Together, they have just launched a new line of cold meat for vegetarians. The product is called “Veggie” and is a version of the popular Mortadela, but in this case the meat has been substituted for the egg whites of farmraised hens and sunflower and virgin olive oil. Veggie is perfect for vegetarians and sports enthusiasts, who don’t want to lose out on their protein intake. Mortadella is a ham/ salami-type luncheon meat often used in sandwiches or salads. Veggie is high in protein, tastes the same as Mortadella, but is low in saturated fats and
V
cholesterol. In fact, it contains ten times less the amount of cholesterol than in the Mortadella containing meat. What is more, this new product also doesn’t contain any colourings, gluten or lactose, and therefore is perfect for celiacs, flexitarians, ovo vegetarians and anyone that is lactose intolerant. Veggie comes in three forms: in slices, in slices with olives and in a block. However, for those that would like to try the new Veggie product, for now it will only appear in Mercadona supermarkets in Madrid, Barcelona and the Valencia Region. http://www.onthepulse. es

Put the noodles in a bowl and pour over boiling water to cover them. Set aside to soak for 10 mins. Stir together the orange juice and zest, curry paste, fish sauce, sugar and 3 tbsp water to make a sauce. Heat the oil in a large wok and add half the ginger and the garlic. Cook, stirring, for 1 min. Add the pepper and stir-fry for 3 mins more. Toss in the sugar snaps, cook briefly, then pour in the curry sauce. Add the beansprouts and prawns, and continue cooking until the prawns just turn pink. Drain the noodles, then toss these into the pan with the herbs and remaining ginger. Mix until the noodles are well coated in the sauce, then serve
PROSECCO THE CROWD PLEASER rosecco seems to be THE drink of choice for special occasions, as sales
PA middle-class figures show a booming trade in the sparkling alternative to Champagne. rush for the huge 1.5 litre magnums has led to a whopping
140% increase on the giant bottles sold this year. A staggering 719,000 mega-bottles were bought in 2016, compared to 297,000 sold in 2014. The huge increase comes at a cost for Champagne, with only 51,000 magnums sold over the same period. It is thought that middle class drinkers are buying Prosecco magnums in droves for BBQs or dinner parties with pals. However, the volume of the magnums - which contain twice the amount of liquid as regular bottles - is thought to be fuelling binge drinking. Niamh Fitzgerald, an alcohol lecturer at the University of Stirling, said: “It is always more difficult for people to measure alcohol units at home. And if the bigger the bottle, the harder this gets. “In the same way as giant wine glasses encourage people to drink more, over-sized wine bottles can mean people are binge drinking without realizing.” Katherine Barnes, director of the Institute of Alcohol Studies, added: “People think nothing of throwing a bottle of wine in their shopping basket along with bread and milk. “However alcohol-related liver disease deaths are increasing and retailers promoting giant wine bottles are contributing to this.” Government guidelines advise people to spread the recommended 14 units of alcohol per week over several days, rather than downing glasses on one or two nights. Bottles of Prosecco and Cava can be bought in supermarkets for less than £10. Yahoo.co.uk

NATURAL WAYS TO KEEP
MOSQUITOES AWAY CONTACT 950 121 936 OR EMAIL SALES@SOLTIMES.COM I’m sure everyone reading this right now has experienced the redness, the swelling and the uncontrollable itching that comes with a mosquito bite. It’s enough to ruin any barbecue or picnic! Many people turn to store bought insect repellents to keep mosquitoes away, but these insect repellents often contain a toxic pesticide that is dangerous to human health. This pesticide is known as DEET. Heavy exposure to
DEET has been linked to memory loss, headache, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath in humans and is particularly toxic to children. Needless to say, this is a pesticide we do NOT want to be using – especially when there are so many more effective ways to keep mosquitoes away using natural remedies and ingredients.
This article will reveal some of the best ways to repel mosquitoes so you can enjoy a mosquito free summer!
your food! Throw a few stalks of rosemary on the hot coals to give off a mosquito repelling aroma. PLANT MOSQUITO REPELLENT PLANTS There are a number of plants that have mosquito repellent properties – for example feverfew, citronella, catnip and lavender are four of the most effective. Plant these in flower beds or containers placed around your garden and keep mosquitoes away. EAT MORE GARLIC Note: While this may repel mosquitoes, it may also repel fellow humans! After eating lots of garlic, garlic oil is gently released from your pores. This garlic oil acts almost like a barrier between your skin and the mosquitoes. APPLY NEEM OIL Neem oil is a vegetable extracted from the Neem tree native to the Indian sub-continent – it is sometimes referred to as “the tree of life”. Neem oil is a natural insecticide used on plants to keep harmful insects away, and it works the same way on humans. Apply neem oil to the skin and keep mosquitoes away. MOSQUITO REPELLENT DRINK I’ve read a number of anecdotes which suggest that drinking apple cider vinegar is an effective mosquito repellent. “Her mind told her that things couldn’t be the same. She was soiled by the men who had used her body, and…and….She pushed the image from her mind of the knife between her legs.” Rollinson presents the reader with a mixture of romance and terror set in a number of politically volatile areas of Eastern Africa with corrupt governments, terrorists and sex trafficking. The author has researched her subject well presenting historical facts of events that occurred as well as accurate medical records. Other subjects to whet your appetite deal with female mutilation-circumcision, inhumane torture and the sale of illegal human organs. Intense. Ian Cornwell, the protagonist was fourteen at the start of the novel. The initial setting is Birmingham, U.K. relatively stable apart from the usual yobbos at football matches, tanked up with booze, out to cause trouble. It is May 1985. A chance meeting with a blind man, Peter Bannister, his wife Margaret and daughter Ann soon developed into a steady relationship that lasted through thick and thin. In fact, young Ann was determined from a very young age to marry Ian and she eventually succeeded. Peter had been struck down by bacterial meningitis which had damaged his nerves and brain. Time moves slowly and before long, Ian studies a B.Sc. at Birmingham University. In his second year he did a seventy day placement with the visual impairment team of the county council. Peter had offered financial support when Ian’s father refused. He had wanted his son to work in the factory like him and earn good money. Ian had other ambitions on a more humanitarian level. Romantic notions creep in at this point and Ian’s first conquest is a Cheryl Brookes, a fellow student who became animated with Ian’s talk about his placement. He, on the other hand, was captivated by her and inevitably they had a sexual relationship which was short-lived once Ian started blabbing on about being in love with

her. Cheryl’s attitude was more a case of love them and leave them, but for Ian, losing his virginity and discovering the delights of a sexual relationship muddled his mind into confusing love and lust. She soon ended it. That put him straight. After his graduation in 1989, Ian ventured into lover number two, another doomed relationship with Pam. She seduced him knowing that her parents would exert pressure on him to do the right thing and marry their daughter. Ian felt trapped and walked away, slightly bruised. The plot becomes a bit more interesting when Ian inherits a sum of money on Peter’s death which enabled him to fulfil a lifelong ambition of going to Eritrea in East Africa, a country currently at war with Ethiopia. Eritrea had once belonged to Ethiopia before the Italians moved in. The country had been ravaged by war and coupled with famine was taking its toll on the people and making it vulnerable to terrorists. it was November 1992 when our hero arrives in Asmara, the capital. He had volunteered for NGO work, hoping to be seconded to an Eritrean development foundation which worked mainly with the Asmara orphanage. On the plane he met Fessehaye Gebreselassie who owned a clothes shop in the capital. Fessehaye became a close friend to Ian and something of a protector when the country was in turmoil. An interesting character is Aagil, the product of war and poverty, abandoned by his parents five years ago who lives in the orphanage. Blind and selfharming, suffering psychological problems. With the help of caring people like Ian and Fessehaye, he is able to turn his life around, a suggestion that there is still hope out of the destructive forces of war and suffering. Some people do survive and he is testament to this belief. December 1992 was a significant time for Ian when he met the love of his life, Gail Summers from South Wales, a qualified nurse. She had taken unpaid leave to help out in Eritrea. She was working as an administrative assistant. Ian found her intelligent and charming and it wasn’t long before he realises
that he has found his life-long partner. He chooses a diving expedition to Tiwalet Island when he decides to propose to her, after a magical moment together: “They clung together, wordlessly; only the lapping of the clear water and a screech of a single bird broke the silence. Ian stroked her wet hair and kissed her repeatedly.” By November 1993 plans are afoot for the loved-up couple to return to the U.K. Eritrea seems euphoric in celebrating its independence. However, there is evidence of political instability. The Eritrean Islamic Jihad rebels, trained in Khartoum, were attacking the armed forces. The novel reaches its first climax during the Cairo flight when the plane is hijacked by the Islamic Salvation Movement, six of them. They were loaded with grenades ordering the plane to be diverted to Khartoum. Their demands were for the government to free 22 Jihad brothers. They took six hostages and threatened to kill them if their demands were not met. Gail was not initially one of the six but unfortunately she was substituted at the last minute. Ian, shocked and horrified, tried to protest but was forcibly pushed back in his seat as a pistol barrel was lashed against the side of his head. “We will kill all six hostages if any effort is made to impede us. If we see any armed forces, police or anything that arouses our suspicion, we will kill the hostages.” Omar Al-Tunabi was their leader. He had connections with Osama bin Laden who had invested heavily in Sudan’s infrastructure and had also provided funds to train a dozen Islamic groups in almost thirty camps established throughout Sudan. So, instead of returning to the U.K. Ian decided to remain in Khartoum so that he could find Gail. He has a perilous journey ahead of him and once you get stuck into this, you’ll be absorbed by his endless spirit, determined to find the woman he loves. Publisher: K.J.Rollinson. Self-Publishing. SOLTIMES AUGUST 2016

ALMERIA AIRPORT - WHAT’S GOING ON? Over the past five years, I’ve written countless articles about Almeria airport and I’m sorry
to say, I’ve yet to come up with an answer as to why it’s so under used. That said, I’m not one to give up on any story I feel needs to be in the public domain and this one, without a doubt, certainly needs to be. Not too many days go by when frustrated property owners and visitors ask me the same question, the one I’ve posed in the headline to this piece – What’s going on at our local airport? Well, if there was a simple answer, then I would have no need to be writing yet another article on the subject, but the fact is, there isn’t an answer, let alone a simple one. So let’s go back more than ten years, when the whole story began. In 2002, Almeria was awarded the prestigious honour of hosting the 2006 Mediterranean Games. And an undoubted honour it was; think of the number of countries around the Mediterranean, the number of major cities and possible venues and you’ll appreciate what an important accolade this was. A huge re-development scheme was initiated to improve existing sports centres or to build new arenas for the dozens of different events the games would bring to the region. It wasn’t just in Almeria either; the games would spread across the region, from Roquetas de Mar and Vicar, to Aquadulce, San Jose and Nijar. The focal point of the games - the track and field events - would take place in the brand new Mediterranean Stadium, a 10,000 seater arena situated in the centre of Almeria and constructed at a cost of 20 million euros; it’s now the home of Almeria football club. Roquetas de Mar would also benefit from a new stadium as well, as would most of the other venues for the numerous events. So much for the sporting side of the games, the cost of which incidentally, was reckoned to be in the region of 250 million euros, funded jointly by the Mediterranean Sports Council, The Government of Andalucia and the National Government. The next question to be addressed was transport – how were the thousands of visitors going to get here? The obvious answer was the one right on the doorstep, Almeria airport. Perfect, but for one major problem, it wasn’t capable of handling the huge amount of visitors who would be travelling to the games from all over Europe. More money was set aside for the expansion of the airport and with a similar amount injected into the project by the airport owners, Aena, the four year expansion plan for Almeria airport got underway. A new taxi-way, more aircraft apron spaces, larger cargo areas and improvements to the arrival and departure halls, plus expanded car parking facilities, were all implemented during this time; at the end of the expansion plan, Almeria airport was almost unrecognisable. An article in the local newspaper, La Voz de Almeria, called it, ‘A triumphant achievement,’ which it undoubtedly was, but more importantly, it was the prospect of the long term achievement which excited all the local authorities. This was not to be just a ‘flash in the pan’ project, aimed solely at the Mediterranean Games, this was to be the fire which ignited the flame for the future development of the region as a major tourist destination. Which of course made complete sense: you don’t plough huge amounts of money into expanding your local airport, just for a two week sporting event. No, Almeria and its surrounding towns, Roquetas de Mar, Mojacar, Vera, Albox, Almerimar and dozens more, would become accessible to a whole new market of visitors, thanks to the expansion of the airport. The Council of Andalucia, the Regional Tourist Authority, the local Hotel Associations, the local government and tourist authorities all issued glowing statements as to how the future of the region would be enhanced by the improvements to the airport. More importantly, and this is really worth remembering, the airport operators, Aena, were even more optimistic about the impact it would have on the region. Yipee, we all thought, and rightly so. The region would prosper; property owners would have greater access to their holiday homes, more tourists would come here all year round; the effect on the local economy – for hotels, bars, restaurants and allied industries – would be enormous, bring it on, we all thought. You’re waiting for a ‘but’ aren’t you? I don’t want to use the ‘but’ word . . . BUT, I have to. Somehow, somewhere, for some as yet unknown reason, it didn’t and hasn’t happened. Don’t get ahead of me now, Why, I hear you asking? Deja vu? We come full circle. That’s the question I’ve been trying to answer for a long time, as I pointed out in my introduction to this piece. Amazingly, the number of daily flights using Almeria airport has diminished in the last ten years. In 2006 there were over twenty flights per day, and now, believe it or not, here in August, in the height of the tourist season, Almeria airport is handling fifteen flights a day. Just fifteen, it’s quite incredible. And five of those flights are internal – Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Melilla - the other ten are from Brussels, Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester.

The airport could easily handle fifteen flights an hour, but it doesn’t. Why? As I reported in 2014, another bombshell had been dropped by the airport operator Aena. Accounting figures released by them to the end of 2012 showed a huge operational loss of 7.9 million euros; predictions being made for 2013 were said to be about the same amount. That came on the back of a report in March of that year by the Council of Andalucia, requesting government confirmation of the long term viability of the airport. The Council was worried about a government proposal for small airports – Almeria included – cutting back on operational hours with the inevitable loss of some connecting routes. The knock on effect would mean job losses, fewer flights and more worryingly, fewer tourists for the already struggling economy of the region. The cutting of many of the summer routes was and still is being felt by frequent flyers, who are faced with the familiar problems of how to get to their holiday homes in the area, with so few flights available. In response to the accounting figures, Aena said that yet more improvements to the airport would ensure its long term future, quote,‘As it was now capable of handling almost 3 million passengers a year, more than three times the current number.’ This is all very well in theory, but the four regional airports mentioned in the government report – Almeria, Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba - handle less than 2.5 million passengers between them. Dream on. So where did, and where does Aena think those 3 million passengers are going to come from? I tried to speak to their PR department last week and received a frosty reception: they referred me, incredibly, to their website, which paints a glowing picture of the Aena brand: they incidentally own five other very successful airports in Spain. So why isn’t this one functioning as it should? Each year, the number of tour operators using the airport decreases; for instance, there have been no flights from Russia and Hungary, they stopped two years ago. And of course, I’m talking about summer usage now, during the winter months – October to May – there are even fewer flights. For the last two weeks, while researching this story, I’ve contacted all the major agencies involved in the tourist and travel business in the region and what have I discovered? Quite frankly, not a lot. The impression I get is of incompetence and complacency throughout. The Council of Andalucia refers me to the Tourist Board of Andalucia, who refer me to the Flight Operators Association, who refer me to the Tourist Operators Association, who refer me to the Council of Andalucia, and so it goes on; I’ve travelled full circle and am none the wiser for it. The thousands of regular visitors to Roquetas and Almeria are in turn, none the wiser and they are the ones pulling their hair out over the futility of the situation. Almeria airport is a sleeping giant. The facilities are superb, the access routes are superb; everything about the airport is superb. And yet, it sits idle for most of the day, every day. It has to be fully staffed with caterers, fire and safety crews, arrival and departure personnel, administration and security, cleaners and numerous other ancillary staff. Can I see a possible change? No, is my truthful answer. I wish I could say differently but all the feedback I get is negative; no one seems to want to put their heads above the parapet and come up with an answer, let alone a solution. I truly wish I could be more optimistic, but I can’t. The knock on effect of the lack of use of our local airport is far reaching and the economy of the region suffers as a direct consequence. Miracles do happen, but in this case, I’m still left with the question, Almeria airport . . . What’s going on? Martin Shortland
