CRESCENDO says ‘so long, farewell’ to LESLEY
At choir practice on Friday October 21st everyone said a fond farewell to Lesley Rolls. She and her husband Stuart have decided to return to England after more than ten years in Spain. Lesley has been a staunch member of the choir throughout her time here, for many years choir secretary and a keen committee member. She will be remembered also for the comedy songs she sang at Crescendo’s own Christmas fundraising concerts. Stuart, although not a singing member, has supported the choir in many ways. The choir presented Lesley with a beautiful china fruit dish. We wish her and Stuart all the best for the future and
hope that it will not be too long before they return for a visit. For information about Crescendo International Choir and dates of future concerts please look at the web site www.crescendo-choir.com
“The Annual General Meeting of Zurgena Neighbourhood Watch will take place in the Theatre in Zurgena at 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday 23rd November 2016. It is anticipated that this meeting will be no more than an hour or so in duration. The formalities have to be completed in order to allow us to continue to function. In addition, during the meeting there will be a presentation covering the current situation in respect of crime in our area, together with the opportunity for members to raise any issues they may wish to cover. We would also welcome non-members who are residents of Zurgena, whether here full-time or for only part of the year, to come along and find out about Neighbourhood Watch. We hope to have most of our Co-ordinators present at the meeting to chat with people. We
are conscious that there have been some areas of the district which have not had a Co-ordinator for a while, and as a result some members may not have been receiving Neighbourhood Watch alert emails. This is being remedied, so if there are members who have not been receiving alerts, please advise me at: cherryinspain@aol.co.uk. Should any members wish to add a specific item to the Agenda, please notify your Co-ordinator or the Zurgena Neighbourhood Watch Secretary, Chrissy Maywood, of this by Sunday 13th November 2016. As ever, we ask that as many members as possible attend the meeting in order to support our local Neighbourhood Watch scheme, and to ensure that it will continue in the future. ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM IN MOJÁCAR CLASSROOMS Surreal abstract expressionism recently came to the classrooms of Mojácar’s Rey Alabez Secondary School. Thanks to the artist, Emilio Vieites and a grant from Mojácar Town Council to the Valparaiso Foundation, twenty students of the Mojácar School enjoyed a master class in painting.Emilio Vieites, who has a degree in astrophysics, combines his passion for science and painting in his works. Highly regarded in the art world, with a future as bright as his own work, he manages to capture the light and the universe like no-one else. His canvases seem to move in front of you and change with the light, drawing in the viewer towards infinity and
outer space. The students were allowed to create their own work under the direction of Emilio who, at the same time pointed out and explained the steps of his own painting technique to the young artists. They had the opportunity to admire the artist’s work through a short video of his art and the work he has done in his workshop, as well as participate in this painting technique that the author himself has called, “dream-like abstract expressionism”. During this very special session the young people made two magnificent oil paintings which were signed by all of them and will remain at the school,
hung in one of the classrooms. It was certainly a very different lesson and, all thanks to his visit to Mojácar and the Valparaiso Foundation.

A Professional, SKY trained engineer with 20 years’ experience. Established in Spain for the last 12 years. The best knowledge of TV systems around.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9am-3pm, Saturday, 9am-1pm, Wednesday & Sunday closed. The Arboleas Punto Limpio (recycling centre) officially opened on the 4th of July 2016 after being built next to the old Arboleas landfill site and funded by the Junta de Andalucia at a cost of 350,000€. The centre provides a destination for all unwanted items to be disposed of in the correct manner and not just for the residents of Arboleas. For too many years in the past it has been quite common to have found all manner of items in the old landfill site, filling the roadside bins, dumped in the ramblas or on any available spare ground. With the recycling centre now in operation there are no excuses for dumping unwanted items and it also leaves the roadside bins for their original intended use of kitchen/ household rubbish only. The following list contains examples of what can and should be deposited in the centre:metals, wood, cardboard, furniture,
fridges/freezers, washing machines, cookers (gas & electric), microwave ovens, small electrical items (irons, Hi-Fis, DVD players, hoovers), oil (cooking/engine), light bulbs, aerosols, computers, builders rubble, paint & solvents, mobile phones, car & household batteries, car parts, clothes/ materials/shoes, garden cuttings, televisions and AC units etc. Mr Gibb, the manager said “I find it hard to believe even though I have seen it with my own eyes, the many different items and shear volume deposited in the centre the last four months, which would have otherwise have been dumped around Arboleas”. The centre is still in its infancy but with time and growth it will become a valuable part of Arboleas village life expanding to help keep the area free from unwanted items, provide employment and help keep the cost of street cleaning to a minimum. You can also visit the recycling centre on Facebook under Arboleas Punto Limpio for more information.

Spain vows to quickly ratify climate pact
Spain will quickly ratify a global pact aimed at taming climate change, a step which had been delayed by months of political paralysis, Environment Minister Isabel Garcia Tejerina said Friday. Conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s new government, which was sworn in last week, will introduce the agreement in parliament on November 3 so it can be ratified “as soon as possible”, she told a news conference after a weekly cabinet meeting. “Ratification will allow us to participate fully in all the decisions which will start to be adopted” after UN climate talks currently underway in Morocco which Rajoy will attend, she added. Spain took nearly 10 months to establish a government after two inconclusive general elections and several unsuccessful attempts to form a coalition in a country where the traditional two-party system was shattered by the rise of new political parties. More than 100 nations representing 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions have inked the historic Paris Agreement, the world’s first universal climate pact, which came into force in early November. But the future of the pact -- which aims to cap global warming at well below two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and 1.5 Celsius if possible, compared with pre-industrial levels -- is in doubt after Republican Donald Trump’s surprise election win in the US. Climate change denier Trump, who has
made no secret of his disregard for the United Nations, pledged earlier this year to withdraw from the Paris climate deal. In contrast, current US President Barack Obama has been a champion of the pact. Tejerina said she was confident that Washington would not abandon the pact. “It is a change in the global economy which already is unstoppable, not only by governments, but also by companies. We have to wait and see how the new American administration responds,” she added. Spain is one of the biggest consumers in Europe of fossil fuels. The country also has little or no oil reserves, making it heavily dependent on imported oil Oil accounts for half of its energy consumption while natural gas accounts for roughly 20 percent. The country encouraged the development of renewable energy in the 2000s through generous government subsidies awarded by the previous Socialist government. But Rajoy, in power since 2011, slashed the subsidies as part of wider austerity measures aimed at reducing a ballooning public deficit. Spain has the world’s fourth biggest wind park after China, the United States and Germany. Spanish renewable energy group Gamesa last month approved a merger with the wind power division of German engineering giant Siemens which will create a global giant in the sector. expatica.comn
REFUGE COLLECTIONS
Please note… this is for the benefit of everyone currently living – and indeed for those who are just visiting Spain for a short/long period – and I mean everyone! You can get rid of your unwanted ‘large and over-sized’ household items (fridges, washing machines, spin-driers, hoovers, mattresses etc.) by leaving them near to (even placing them inside) any of the local official refuge bins/containers ON or 24 hours before the 7th and 22nd of EVERY MONTH… starting in December. Over the last SIX years I have tried (sometimes in vain) to keep the area around where I live, rubbish-free… and to a certain extent, I believe I have succeeded. Now please do your bit… but please don’t’ decide to place your unwanted items on the roadside on the 8th or the 23rd of the month… how about doing it on the 6th and 21st !! I know of a few people/residents from in and around the Turre area who might, just might, appreciate this! Tony Matthews

Proud to be the Huercal Overa area’s main Estate Agent Focusing on smaller area to give our clients a better service.
Huercal Overa is a market town that sits along the side of the Almanzora River in the province of Almeria, in Andalusia. The town is a merge of two medieval settlements – Huercal and Overa. The town and surrounding area has a thriving agriculture industry, mainly for the lead mining in the region. Natural area Much of the surrounding countryside is desert-like; many visitors remark that the area is more like Arizona or Australia, than the Mediterranean coast. However, a few years ago a pine plantation was planted close to Huercal Overa - the first in the area for some 500 years. The forest is part of a long-term project to transform much of the area into lush greenery. The trees include almonds, oak and eucalyptus, as well as the ubiquitous palm. Market Town Market day is Monday and much of the town is taken over by the market on Monday morning. Huercal Overa benefits from good facilities with hotels, restaurants, hospital and municipal swimming pool and leisure centre. L o c Festivals

Leonard Cohen: How Spain gave him his song
most important literature prize. In 2011, when Cohen visited Oviedo to collect the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, he explained how, if it wasn’t for a chance meeting with a Spanish flamenco guitarist in his home town of Montreal as a young man, his music and career may have been very different. He went on to recount how after coming across the guitarist in the local park he persuaded the Spaniard to give him a few lessons. After the guitarist failed one day to turn up to the class, Cohen discovered that he had taken his own life. "I knew nothing about the man. I -- I did not know what part of Spain he came from. I did not know why he came to Montreal. I did not know why he stayed there. I did not know why he he appeared there in that tennis court. I did not know why he took his life. I -- I was deeply saddened, of course." That flamenco guitarist taught Cohen six chords. "It was that guitar pattern that has
Leonard Cohen With the sad news of the death of Leonard Cohen, the Canadian singer-songwriter and poet, who passed away on Thursday aged 82, The Local takes a look at the important role Spain held in influencing the artist. Those familiar with Cohen’s work will know how he was influenced by the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca - even naming his daughter Lorca - and that many of his songs included flamenco style refrains. But the full extent of Spain’s role in shaping his music was only revealed when he came to Spain five years ago to accept the nation’s

been the basis of all my songs and all my music,” he explained to the audience in Oviedo adding: “So, now you will begin to understand the dimensions of the gratitude I have for this country." During the speech he explained how Lorca had helped him find his voice and the flamenco guitarist his song. "I could say that when I was a young man, an adolescent, and I hungered for a voice, I studied the English poets and I knew their work well, and I copied their styles, but I could not find a voice. It was only when -- when I read, even in translation, the works of Lorca that I understood that there was a voice. It is not that I copied his voice; I would not dare. "But he gave me permission to find a voice, to locate a voice; that is, to locate a self, a self that that is not fixed, a self that struggles for its own existence. He also revealed how for forty years his instrument of choice was, in his words, a “Conde guitar, which was made in Spain in the great workshop at Number 7 Gravina Street”. Speaking of his decision to come to Spain to accept the prestigious award he said: "I inhaled the fragrance of cedar as fresh as the first day that I acquired the guitar. And a voice seemed to say to me, "You are an old man and you have not said thank you; you have not brought your gratitude back to the soil from which this fragrance arose." And so I come here tonight to thank the soil and the soul of this people that has given me so much -- because I know just as an identity card is not a man, a credit rating is not a country."
Anyone is welcome to join the happy bunch and have a laugh, exchange views and ideas. The more, the merrier and the bar owners enjoy it too!

ANTAS IS OPEN for business
Antas is a municipality in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. The mountains of the Filabres roll down in undulating slopes at their north eastern end and here, on a fertile plain, lies Antas. The river, now usually dry, has carved a ravine through the soft sandstone, where birds nest in the holes in the cliffs. All around Antas there are numerous large orange and lemon groves, and other fruits and vegetables are grown on this highly cultivated area. The local market is known in the area for the quality of its produce.
The first settlements date from the Paleolithic age. From the Neolithic, various remains have been studied such as the Aljoroque, the Gerundia, the cabezo del Moro and the Pernera. In the latter a small slate idol was found which is used as a symbol in Antas. But what Antas is really important for is being the birthplace of the Argar settlement during the Bronze Age. The Argar culture developed in the southeast between the years 1900 BC and 1300 BC as an organized society around a dominant oligarchy. When the Argar culture died out, this
zone lost its importance; its population was very spread out. During the Roman and Al-Andalus periods practically no archaeological remains were found.
With the surrender of the area of Vera in 1488, the inhabitants of Vera were forced to either go to Africa or relocate to the interior. 50 families moved to Antas. An Arab quarter dependent on Vera was formed. In the decade of the 1490s the inhabitants of Antas were accused of protecting raiders and were almost reduced to slavery.
After the War of the Alpujarras (1569-1570), the inhabitants were expelled, although they had not participated in the revolt. The repopulation was carried out by means of 63 people from Murcia, Valencia, Bilbao and Toledo. At the beginning they went to live in Vera for fear of attack from the Moors hiding in the mountains. At the beginning of the XVIII century, Antas became independent from Vera.
The Patron Saint of Antas the Hermitage of the “Virgin of the Cabeza” can be found lying outside the town on the top of a hill. It dates probably from the 16th century and was

The main celebration of the locality is the fiesta of the Virgin of the same name and on 8 September every year her image is taken from the church to the Hermitage where she is offered floral tributes after the pilgrimage. In the middle of Lent, the people of Antas also celebrate Spring with the pagan ritual of “killing the old women”, they gather on the nearby hillside called the Ridge of María and animated by the town band, proceed to throw sweets at the local grandmothers! Antas’s most eminent citizen is the poet Antonio Jesus Soler Cano, poet.

Check your skincare regimen. Avoid anything that contains highly active ingredients, especially if your skin is itchy or stinging.
Eat plenty of essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly omega-3 (found in avocado and oily fish) and omega-6 (found in nuts, wholegrains and flaxseed oil), which keep skin hydrated and clarified. A deficiency in both of these may result in dry, inflamed skin, whiteheads and blackheads.
“Use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin, followed by a quality moisturiser that will dose skin with lipids and reinforce its protective barrier,” says Liza Curwen-Begg from Eden Day Spa. Choose fragrance-free formulas to help counteract potential irritation.
“EFAs are important building blocks for the wall of every cell in our body,’” says nutritionist and naturopath Tabitha McIntosh, of Awaken Your Health. “There is growing evidence that they assist in keeping skin moisturised, smooth and healthy. They also have anti-inflammatory effects and can relieve eczema symptoms. Good sources include oily fish, raw seeds and nuts and avocados, plus supplements of pure fish oil, flaxseed oil and evening primrose oil.
Exfoliate weekly to counteract the build-up of dead skin cells.
“Your skin is also reliant on good hydration. Avoid dehydration by It’s nearly that time drinking eight to 10 glasses of water of year when the daily and minimising your intake of temperature drops and caffeinated drinks and alcohol.” cold winds, central heating and low humidity can dry skin out, leaving it vulnerable to itchiness and flaking. It can also exacerbate conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

Topical relief
“When skin is cold it doesn’t function as well,” Curwen-Begg says, “so the natural shedding slows down. Products become less effective, as the barrier of dead cells prevents absorption.” Follow with a hydrating mask that will infuse the epidermis with moisture and help to soothe any stinging or itchiness. Extend your skincare You will be wearing heavy clothing and fabrics at this time of year, so it’s natural that you might forget to nurture the skin below your décolletage, but remember that it can suffer just as much.

ways to make sure your feet survive party season

We spoke to a celebrity podiatrist who handles A-list feet to get the best tips

30 Daily Lenses FOR ONLY
1. Wear flat shoes at all times when you don't have to wear heels 'Whenever you don't need to be wearing your heels, don't.' Dina warns, 'Wear flat, supportive, leather based or suede shoes all day and change into your party shoes last minute.' She also recommended avoiding patent shoes as they can squash your feet. 'When you do change into your heels, open toe and ankle straps are the best option because they mean there's no toe rubbing and your feet are supported as best they can be,' adds Dina. And the secret to comfortable but beautiful party shoes? Kitten or lower heels with a 2 inch block heel.
'Salt-water soaks are really good for your feet,' Dina explained, because they ease sore muscles and joints, reduce inflammation, soften and deodorise feet. They also improve circulation, which is great if you've been tottering around in tight shoes all night
2. Wash your feet properly before changing shoes 'You can do this at home or in the office, if you're going straight to an event, but it's so important to give your feet a quick rinse before changing shoes,' the celebrity podiatrist explains. 'It prevents the spread of bacteria.' Drying feet properly is equally as important and particularly between the toes to prevent fungal infections. If you have time, once your feet are dried, add talcum powder and put on fresh socks for as long as possible before changing into your party shoes. 3. Cream your feet before putting on heels Just like you moisturise your hands and face, moisturising your feet is important to keep them soft and hydrated. 'Creaming your feet before you put on your heels is really important for stopping them cracking
4. Table salt foot baths after the evening out or the next morning We love this tip as it's a great excuse to sit down and relax in front of re-runs of James Martin's Christmas cookery show and best of all, you only need some table salt and a bucket.
5. Have a medical pedicure Unlike a normal pedicure, a medical one 'includes a thorough assessment of both feet from nails, skin, down to your heels and even in between your toes,' Dina explains. 'The most beneficial part of this treatment is the education. You will also be advised on the best home remedies plus much more.' So instead of just making sure your feet look great, you'll be able to get tips and tricks on how to ensure they feel great and have any potential problems highlighted and treated. 6. Sleep with your feet elevated

Christmas is on its way. But before the 25 December, we've got a hell of a lot of festive parties to go to. But with great parties come great footwear, and with great footwear we usually get pretty sore and swollen feet. In a bid to help us all survive the festive season with two, pain-free feet we spoke to podiatrist, Dina Gohil, from Mayfair clinic DG Podiatrist who tends to the soles of many of London's stars. One of the concluding comments, a very simple but poignant one is spoken by Skeeter’s mother who is dying of cancer. When she became an important political figure she betrayed Constantine, the help who had brought Skeeter up to be strong and independent. She dismissed her and her daughter Rachel from her home to show white superiority in front of her political and influential friends. She lacked the courage to openly admit that coloured people were valued and a part of her white family, something she had to live with. Skeeter, a journalist learns the truth when she attempts to write the tortuous accounts of the abuse and humiliation the coloured women had to suffer at the hands of the middle class, racist whites. The story is about the courage to tell the truth even though there were consequences. Skeeter becomes ostracized by the white hypocrites and Aibileen Clark, one of the main coloured characters is dismissed by the worst kind of hypocrite, Miss Hilly. Skeeter’s mother remarks on how courage skips generations and after so much tension with her daughter throughout she makes peace with her and tells her how proud she is of her. What I found remarkable is that this is Stockett’s debut novel which took five years to complete. Definitely a labour of love and a painful and shocking tale to tell. The 1960s was an important turning point in American history

The Help Kathryn Stockett with the Civil Rights movement and the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. The setting is Jackson, Mississippi, the writer’s home town. Stockett was born the year after the assassination and she was raised by an African American domestic woman just like Aibileen, Minny and thousands of others. Skeeter represents the writer, a compassionate woman and brave. Her friends deserted her and her boyfriend Stuart walked out on her telling her that she was stirring up trouble. In reality, Stockett’s brother employed a black maid who filed a lawsuit in a Mississippi court against him. Her name was Abilene Cooper. A bit of a coincidence, isn’t it? The lawsuit was thrown out and the writer denied any claim of using Abilene as her main character in “The Help.” The last image will stay with you for some time-Aibileen’s dismissal, tears streaming down her face, the rain soaking through her skin. The pause, the reflection and then a strained smile as she realises that telling the truth has made her feel free. Therapeutic. A story that needs telling certainly. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes, If you don’t know how to get hold of me by now then you have been incredibly lucky or going to the wrong person :-) Today I am going to tell you what to do when windows gets it wrong. I know, many of my die-hard fans will be saying “When does it ever get it right?”. As a coder (programmer) I’m aware of the extremely complex nature of programs. I have spent months looking at the code for the Linux Operating System (Windows – anything, is trademarked with enough legal lockdowns to impress even the NSA). I can tell you that it is an immensely complex and brilliant, piece of coding! Having said that, even something that brilliant and ‘wander off’ from time to time. Any Operating System (OS) will have ‘holes’ in it! The standard solution is to plug these holes with code that by-passes the problems. Every OS worth its salt will send out updates to fill in these unplanned for weaknesses. Windows is absolutely no different! What if the update fails? It does occasionally happen. You will get a message along the lines of “There were some problems installing updates, but we will try later….. Yada Yada”. Let’s make one thing clear, we are talking about a tiny percentage chance of there ever being a failure. For the most part, Windows Update works silently in the background. It downloads updates automatically, installs the ones it can, and saves others to install when you restart Windows. Sometimes, though, an update installation fails and that can prevent other updates from being installed, too. Windows Update is pretty different in Windows 10 than it was in previous versions. Since, in theory, Windows 10 will be the “last” version (did you pick up on the jock there?), Windows Update has gotten a bit more aggressive about ensuring that computers get updated. All available updates (not just the critical ones) are now downloaded and installed
by default. The good news is that you can prevent Windows 10 from automatically downloading updates and, should a bad update come through, you can uninstall it. But that doesn’t help much if an update is stuck in the pipe. Here’s how you can fix that issue when it happens. First try the windows troubleshooter. The easiest way to find it is use the magnifying glass and type in ‘Troubleshooting’ and select the first option. You can also find it in the control panel! So what does it do? It shuts down Windows Update Services. It renames the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to \ Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old, essentially clearing the Windows Update download cache so that it can start over and finally It restarts the Windows Update Services. Search the page for ‘System and Security’, ‘Fix problems with windows update’. After that, it goes to work finding the problems. When it has identified the problems and appropriate solution, You will need to click on the button marked next BUT before you do, I would suggest clicking on the box marked ‘Apply Repairs Automatically’ and then ‘Run as Administrator’. The troubleshooter works through its process and then lets you know whether it could identify and fix the problem. Most of the time, the troubleshooter can successfully remove a stuck update from the queue. Go ahead and try running Windows Update again. Even if the troubleshooter says it couldn’t identify the problem, it’s possible that the actions of starting and stopping the service and clearing out the cache did the trick. There are, of course, other ways of dealing with a faulty download but these have to be done manually and would take a number of articles to explain. So as the teacher puts in your school text book “See Me!”. Until next time, I hope your computers offer you no problems, but if they do “See Me”.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com Inheritance tax: New exemptions for inheritance by non-residents: Excellent news: Inheritance tax discrimination of non-residents has come to an end thanks to the European Court of Justice. Make sure that when you file your inheritance tax as a non-resident beneficiary that your solicitor calculates your tax also as if you were a resident in the autonomous region with the maximum connection with the estate (using any additional exemption offered in that region of Spain to its residents). For example, where the property is situated. In the case of an inheritance in Andalucía this will in practice mean that if you are a Spouse or a descendent and receive less than 175,000 euro in value, you will pay no inheritance tax (other regions of Spain have different exemptions). It can result in a bit of confusion because, as before, as you are nonresident you will need to present the tax declarations to the national tax office (Agencia Triburaria) in Madrid . But you can claim the same exemptions as if you were a resident in Andalucia presenting your return to
the regional government in Andalucia (which is where you would have presented it had you been a resident). If the tax calculated is lower as a resident, you are entitled to claim the same tax level as a resident on your self-assessment form. Please note that if you present a self-assessment and do not make the above calculations and claim the most favourable outcome on your self-assessment form, then it would be a complex procedure to get your money back if you later realise that you were entitled to the extra exemption. It is an easy mistake to make. People are still presenting the self-assessment forms without taking advantage of the system that has been created by the sentence of the European Court of Justice of 3rd of September of 2014 and the resulting change the government has made to the inheritance tax forms for nonresidents, introduced on the 31st of December of 2014 For further information about this and who is actually affected by the situation, please read our previous article which we printed back in September of 2014 when the sentence was issued by the ECJ.

Decoding the secret messages of Spain’s Alhambra palace
Spanish team translates 10,000 inscriptions at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Granada One of the 10,000 epigraphs adorning the Alhambra. One of the 10,000 epigraphs adorning the Alhambra. Propaganda has always been a potent tool for the powers that be. In 13th-century southern Spain, or Al Andalus, under Muslim rule, the Nasrid dynasty made full use of it, spelling out its messages in ornate engravings on the walls, columns, arches, fountains and ceilings of the magnificent Alhambra Palace and gardens complex in Granada. Thanks to the painstaking work of a Spanish academic, we now know that most of the 10,000 inscriptions adorning the city are not, as was once thought, just snippets of poetry or extracts from the Koran, but are also references to conquests and other feats. It’s hard to find an inch that is free from inscription in the Alhambra José Castilla Brazales, researcher But the most common engraving is the Nasrid motto “Wa-la galib illa Allah”, meaning: “There’s no greater conqueror than Allah,” a reminder to mortals of who was in power. So says Juan Castilla Brazales, an expert in Arab history and culture at Spain’s elite CSIC School of Arabic Studies, who has catalogued most of the epigraphs with the help of a team of 12 aides after a laborious process that involved locating each inscription, translating it into Spanish and English, linking it to similar inscriptions, photographing and drawing it. “It’s hard to find an inch that is free from inscription in the Alhambra,” says Castilla. “Even the muqarnas [decorative form of vaulting] sometimes have inscriptions on them. I’ve spent hours searching for epigraphs on the ceilings with my binoculars.” Unlike European palaces and cathedrals, Arabic décor avoids human or animal motifs. Nasrid decorations rely on geometric and floral shapes and, in the absence of sculpture, on calligraphy, according to Castilla. A column with inscriptions at the Alhambra. A column with inscriptions at the Alhambra. “The Alhambra is not covered in poems or
Koranic verses, because one of the main goals of the décor was to reinforce identity,” he says. “It was a kind of advertising.” Hence there are frequent references praising Allah, such as “Thanks be to Allah” or “Glory to Allah”. To a lesser degree, there are brief inscriptions promoting abstract concepts such as happiness and glory, as well as blessings and phrases lauding the monarchy. Last of all, there are inscriptions from the Koran and poetry from some of the most brilliant scribes of the age. Juan Castilla and his team are now celebrating the completion of a work 500-year-old work in progress: after the Christian conquest of Granada in 1492, and with it the end of Arab rule in Spain, the Alhambra attracted sightseers intrigued by the meaning of the inscriptions. Translations were made of many of the poems, but not of the smaller epigraphs. The first attempts were made by local physician Alonso del Castillo in 1564. But Castilla wanted to complete the task, leaving no stone unturned. “I wasn’t content with just the inscriptions that are in plain view. I sought them all out.” Geometric inscriptions The inscriptions in the Alhambra are written in classical Arabic, making them difficult for someone only familiar with modern Arabic to read. “It’s an ornamental calligraphy with floral flourishes that make reading it harder,” says Castilla. There are three types of letters – Kufic, from Kufa in Iraq, was the first and is considered sacred due to its historical role in copying the Koran. It was swapped for italics until Granada’s artisans came up with a geometric form, which, according to Castilla, suggests a creative maturity in Andalusia’s most valuable contribution to Islamic art. He found inscriptions in cellars, under stairs and in places that hadn’t been touched for centuries. Asked if there is a link between each inscription and its location, Castilla explains that each sultan wanted to leave his mark and designed spaces according to the chosen epigraph. At times, quotes were invented for the occasion and in some other cases, familiar texts were used. The catalogue of inscriptions has been
collected in the Epigraphic Corpus of the Alhambra, a set of eight bilingual books and interactive DVDs that explain the ins and outs of each inscription – its location, translation and context, accompanied by photos and drawings. The Spanish University Publishers’ Association has just awarded the translations the distinction of being the best national book edition in digital format. Reynaldo Fernández, director of the Alhambra and Generalife Trust and publisher of the work, hopes to have the final two bookDVDs on sale during the first half of 2017, thereby bringing to the light of day the last of the Alhambra’s secrets. elpais
Andalucia dominates new top ten most visited monuments in Spain list
Andalucia is the most represented region on the list FOUR of Spain’s top ten most visited monuments are in Andalucia. A list compiled by El Pais shows that the La Alhambra in Granada received 2.5 million visitors last year, and was the fourth most visited in the country. The stunning palace and fortress was originally constructed in 889 AD before being renovated by Moors in the 13th century. Cordoba’s La Mezquita – a stunning mosque originating from the 8th century – featured at number six with 1.6 million visitors. The historic place of worship is followed by Sevilla’s Catedral de Santa Maria and Real Alcazar which both received 1.5 million visitors last year. Andalucia is the most represented region on the list, followed by Madrid which has three monuments and Barcelona with two. Topping the list with 3.7 million visitors is Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, or Basilica, which began construction in 1852 and is still undergoing works to its roof structure. olivepress

viewpoint
‘Trabajo’ is a four letter word
Mentioning work in Alqueria is akin to screening a Ken Loach film at the Conservative Party conference. The Alquerian understanding of the work ethic is just as alien to the Pueblo’s inhabitants as Loach’s ideas of social equality are to the Tories. But work has to be done in Alqueria, the Village has to be financed. Angela Merkel has suggested that all Europeans should work until they are sixty-seven, you can’t get Alquerians to work after Lunch, before is difficult enough but after, no chance. Apart from the usual retail establishments the only real wealth producers in Alqueria are Poyato’s Remitroot plant and Rodriquez’s olive mill. The latter was once a thriving concern producing olive oil of the finest quality and richness of flavour. With the demise of its owner, Roque Rodriquez the Mill fell into the hands of Roque’s son, known simply as Rodriquez or ‘That B******’. Under his careful management the concern is now losing money and its very fabric derelict. Rodriquez has a passion, Abyssinian Goat Shirling. People familiar with the sport will know it is very expensive, a new set of gullion skrunging prongs can cost upwards of thirtythousand E u r o s . Rodriquez diverted e v e r y
penny of the Mill’s profits and when these stopped rolling in he disappeared the pension fund and then sold off the assets that were still standing. The work force, once a conscientious committed group of professionals dissolved into a collection of purloining malcontents. They looting the place. The last large investment made was in a complex computer system. This was taken piecemeal, most of it under coats, jerseys and shirts. Rodriquez couldn’t understand why ninety percent of his workforce, female and male appeared pregnant, but he never was one to pry. Not many Alquerians have worked outside the Pueblo, their services aren’t exactly sought after. Loco Paco did once work for a large hotel in Madrid, if only for a very short time. He was engaged to clean the lifts. Now, lifts simply don’t exist in Alqueria. The shoddy method of civil construction won’t tolerate buildings above two stories high. Paco wasn’t sure what a ‘lift’ was. He thought they were those convoluted brassieres that enhance the female form. So quite naturally he was looking forward to starting his new job. Poor Paco was to be disappointed and to add insult to injury it took him a whole six days to clean the ‘ascensores’. When asked why it took so long he replied that there were two on each floor and sometimes they had completely disappeared, he had to wait ages for them to rematerialise. Of Poyato’s Remitroot plant later.
One of Those Days
Actually, it’s more like one of those weeks. Or even longer, if you count from the very beginning. It all started when the laptop came over all prima donna, and decided that it would only allow us to see that which it considered appropriate, and personal emails were not included under this heading. I have as much tolerance for technological tantrums as a snowflake in Hell, but Pete has the capacity for patience and persistence that would make Job jealous, so while I worked my anger out by violent washing-up he engaged in hand-to-mouse combat. The daily battles were evenly balanced – Pete was not quite winning, but he was not losing either. However, machines don’t get tired, so inevitably it wore him down. He abandoned the conflict and packed the **** thing off to the 2Steves at Informatica, who have no fear of electronic insubordination. Whilst our minds were being thus exercised by the laptop Henry Zachariah Smith, the car, decided that he wished to be serviced. He stated loftily, via a digital message on his dash, that he wished this to take place within 30 days. We told him that this was not going to happen, and explained why. However, he repeated his message daily, implacably subtracting a day each time. When he reached Day Zero he went into a sulk, signified by an orange spanner on his display

instead of the usual message. These two mechanical mishaps coincided on Saturday. Having disposed of the laptop, and with it all ability to send in my weekly scribblings to Lee at Sol I went to phone Renault and book Henry’s desired service, but without success - I foolishly expected a main dealership would at least answer its phone…..silly me! Thus came the Monday. We pointed a still sulking Henry Verawards, calling on the way into Lee’s office to bring him the news that there was going to be a Biggsless blank space next to Alqueria. ‘No problem, I’ll put in a previous one.’ Lee answered calmly; to him this was all in a day’s work - he is not prone to panic! Things were looking up - Renault was open, and Henry’s desired appointment was made for Monday week. We celebrated the coming together of a plan and went into Iceland to get 2 products. We ended up with 14; so what? Our luck had changed. Or had it?

What's New and Beneficial about Sweet Potatoes
Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes may be one of nature's unsurpassed sources of betacarotene. Several recent studies have shown the superior ability of sweet potatoes to raise our blood levels of vitamin A. This benefit may be particularly true for children. In several studies from Africa, sweet potatoes were found to contain between 100-1,600 micrograms (RAE) of vitamin A in every 3.5 ounces— enough, on average, to meet 35% of all vitamin A needs, and in many cases enough to meet over 90% of vitamin A needs (from this single food alone). Sweet potatoes are not always orange-fleshed on the inside but can also be a spectacular purple color. Sometimes it's impossible to tell from the skin of sweet potato just how rich in purple tones its inside will be. That's because scientists have now identified the exact genes in sweet potatoes (IbMYB1 and IbMYB2) that get activated to produce the purple anthocyanin pigments responsible for the rich purple tones of the flesh. The purple-fleshed sweet potato anthocyanins—primarily peonidins and cyanidins—have important antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties. Particularly when passing through our digestive tract, they may be able to lower the potential health risk posed by heavy metals and oxygen radicals. It can be helpful to include some fat in your sweet potato-containing meals if you want to enjoy the full beta-
carotene benefits of this root vegetable. Recent research has shown that a minimum of 3-5 grams of fat per meal significantly increases our uptake of beta-carotene from sweet potatoes. Of course, this minimal amount of fat can be very easy to include. In our Healthy Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe, for example, we include 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and with just this one tablespoon, each of our 4 servings for this delicious recipe provides 3.5 grams of fat. Some nutritional benefits from sweet potatoes simply may be easier to achieve if you use steaming or boiling as your cooking method. Recent studies show excellent preservation of sweet potato anthocyanins with steaming, and several studies comparing boiling to roasting have shown better blood sugar effects (including the achievement of a lower glycemic index, or GI value) with boiling. The impact of steaming is particularly interesting, since only two minutes of steaming have been show to deactivate peroxidase enzymes that might otherwise be able to break down anthocyanins found in the sweet potato. In fact, with these peroxidase enzymes deactivated, natural anthocyanin extracts from sweet potato used for food coloring may be even more stable than synthetic food colorings. http://www.whfoods.com

Meanwhile, fry the onions in 1 tbsp olive oil until soft, then add the garlic, chicken stock, cinnamo n and nutmeg. Bring to the boil, and simmer for 5 mins. Remove the sweet potatoes and butternut squash from the oven and add to the pan with the stock. Blend ever ything until smooth using a stick blender. Stir in most of the cream and bring back to a gentle simmer, and season with salt and pepper to taste. To make the lemon & garlic toas ts, gently warm the olive oil and garlic in a pan over a low hea t for a few mins; the garlic should be softened but not brow ned. Remove from the heat and mix in the butter and lemon zest until smooth. Leave to cool, then stir in the chives and thym e. Toast the ciabatta slices, and top each with a spoonful of garlic butter. a couple of chefs tips 1. Never order fish on Monday. According to Anthony Bourdain, every week most restaurants order fresh fish on Thursday or Friday to stock up for the busy weekend. By the time Monday rolls around, it may not be so nice—fresh fish only keeps for three days. On Tuesday the leftovers are likely tossed and another order is placed. If all else fails, ask your server where the seafood came from and

&
when it was caught and delivered. 2. Skip the Kobe beef. Legit wagyu and kobe beef are very rare. Because of that, they're served in tiny portions at extremely expensive price tags. To turn that into a burger would be a complete and utter waste. And honestly, if a restaurant says the burger is kobe beef, it's probably lying. Move on to something else.

Mary Berry to host new cooking show on BBC2 where she’ll explore her Scottish roots
Queen of baking Mary Berry is set return to BBC Two to front a new cooking series, the broadcaster has announced. Hitting screens in the New Year, her newly commissioned show called Mary Berry Everyday will explore some of the recipes that have formed the cornerstone of her cooking over her career. Across six episodes the 81-year-old will travel to her mother’s childhood home in Scotland to enjoy venison, salmon and whisky, and try her hand at beekeeping in search of honey. She will also pursue the history of the great British pie and learn to milk a goat and make her own cheese, as she celebrates the food and ingredients she turns to most and shows an exotic larder is not needed to create delicious dishes. BBC Two channel editor Patrick Holland, who commissioned the new series, said: “I am thrilled that Mary is returning to BBC Two to share her magic. “Her everyday recipes are inspirational and delicious and her series will be a real treat for the audience.” The announcement comes after

Spain to quickly ratify climate pact despite Trump win
Spain will quickly ratify a global pact aimed at taming climate change, a step which had been delayed by months of political paralysis, Environment Minister Isabel Garcia Tejerina said on Friday. Climate change denier Trump, who has made no secret of his disregard for the United Nations, pledged earlier this year to withdraw from the Paris climate deal. The country also has little or no oil

sales@soltimes.com reserves, making it heavily dependent on imported oil. Oil accounts for half of its energy consumption while natural gas accounts for roughly 20 percent. AFP.

If you are anything like me, you want to be sure you have everything set for retirement so when the time comes, you are fully prepared. People of all ages should consider their retirement plans every year but the closer you are to retirement the more attention you should put on them. There are many things you should consider before retirement. In order to plan, ask yourself some important questions. These will help you determine what you need to do to plan for your retirement:
Retirement Details Are you considering early retirement, late retirement or are you planning on retiring at a fairly typical age? How long do you plan to live off your savings? Keep in mind that the longer you will live off your savings and investments, the more you will need. Another

There are a few details that are often overlooked when planning for retirement. First is the possibility of declining health resulting in increased medical expenses. DO you have sufficient insurance to cover any medical expenses? Will you have sufficient cash on hand to pay deductibles? As your health declines and premiums get more expensive, will you be able to afford to pay them? Another consideration often overlooked is inflation. When you are planning for retirement it is imperative that you build in more cash to account for inflation. These are some of the important issues to consider before retirement.

Budget, Budget, Budget As you get closer to retirement it is advisable to seek the advice of a financial planner who specialises in retirement. Even if you have planned and saved all your life you need to understand how much income you will have every month to spend. This is not the entire amount of your retirement investment but the amount of money you will receive every month to live off of. A financial planner will be able to help you realistically budget for the lifestyle you want, will let you know what your projected monthly income should be and advise you on how to get there in the time you have left to save. Putting the Plan into Action Once you have a plan going forward you need to buckle down and put it into action. Look at all the investments you have and make sure they are working for you toward your goals. Investments should be looked at closely and the typical rule is that the closer you get to retirement, the more conservative you should be. The risky funds you invested in when younger should be moved to more conservative ones. Listen to your financial advisor and be diligent about putting
away the funds recommended as things to consider before retirement. Take Care of Yourself Both your financial and physical health should be at the forefront of your mind as what to consider before retirement. Look at your debts and reduce them as much as possible with a special concentration on loans and lines of credit with significant interest rates. If you have children you help out, push them toward financial independence and discuss with them the need to stop relying on the parents before retirement. The fewer expenses you have the better off you will be. Finally, you should make sure to take care of yourself. There is no sense planning for retirement without being able to enjoy it because you are in poor health. Additionally, insuring you are in good health will reduce possible future medical expenses that will sorely tax your retirement reserves. If you keep in mind the things to consider before retirement and plan for them you will truly be able to enjoy your golden years.

Gareth Southgate took a significant step towards being appointed England's full-time manager and intensified the pressure on Scotland counterpart Gordon Strachan in the process with a comfortable World Cup qualifying win at Wembley. Southgate knew victory would press his claims to succeed Sam Allardyce on a permanent basis - and England delivered with a display that was unconvincing but easily enough to beat Scotland. Daniel Sturridge's stooping, instinctive header from Kyle Walker's driven cross put the hosts ahead after 24 minutes and Liverpool team-mate Adam Lallana did the same from Danny Rose's delivery five minutes after the break. James Forrest and Robert Snodgrass missed opportunities for the visitors before Lallana added England's second - and Gary Cahill's 61st-minute header from Wayne Rooney's corner only increased Strachan's agony. England now top Group F while Scotland languish in fifth, with their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 tournament in Russia fading fast. England's interim manager deflected all talk about his future in the build-up to this qualifier - but he will know he is effectively in an impregnable position after this win against a very average Scotland side. Southgate's biggest supporters would be hard-

pressed to suggest this performance hinted at a golden future for England, but it is surely enough to earn the 46-year-old the chance to plot the way ahead to the next World Cup. He was under a little pressure after a poor performance in the goalless draw in Slovenia, but this was just what he needed - in result terms at least - and it is now surely only a matter of time before his appointment is confirmed, irrespective of the result of yesterday’s friendly against Spain at Wembley. It was almost impossible to find an optimistic Scot at Wembley before kick-off. Sadly, their worst fears were confirmed as the pressure mounts on Strachan. The combative 59-year-old was subjected to heavy criticism after a draw at home to Lithuania and a 3-0 loss in Slovakia even before this latest reverse. There was no lack of heart or effort from Scotland, but there is quite simply a lack of quality in their squad, reflected in the eight changes he made here, to no avail, in an attempt to find a spark. Strachan may ask, with some justification, if anyone else could do better with what he has at his disposal, but whether the Scottish Football Association and Tartan Army agree is another matter. England are now in a commanding position and should have no problems reaching the World Cup from this point, but they are still a work in progress. This was a convincing victory margin, but the worry remains that the defence would be seriously troubled by quality opposition. Scotland missed two chances to level before England extended their lead through Lallana, while some of their attempts to play out from the back looked like an alien concept to Southgate's players. However, the result, England's position in the group, Lallana's growing maturity and the clinical manner in which they took their opportunities were

all positives. Scotland's mix-and-match side never looked like having the class to overcome England and that lack of quality was exposed in crucial moments. Leigh Griffiths wasted a glorious opportunity to play in Snodgrass in the first half, while Forrest should have scored with a shot he dragged wide just after half-time. Snodgrass also had a shot blocked by Stones. Scotland's commitment cannot be doubted but this is a squad desperately short of quality - and so it proved at Wembley. bbc.com

Lewis Hamilton: ‘Title win against the Bradford Bulls: Championship club placed in administration for third time odds’ in Abu Dhabi GP
Lewis Hamilton says that the odds will be against him in Formula 1’s finalrace title decider in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton took the championship battle with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to the final race with a superb victory in treacherous wet conditions in Brazil. But he is 12 points behind Rosberg, who will be champion if he finishes third on 27 November even if Hamilton wins. “Right now, it is going to be very hard to beat him but it doesn’t mean I can’t win the race,” Hamilton said. “I am going to take the energy I have at the moment and really try to push as hard as I can in that race to get as far ahead and that is all I can do.” Hamilton’s win in Sao Paulo was his ninth of the year, equalling the number Rosberg has achieved, and his third in a row. It came after his 11th pole position in 20 races, and was the 52nd of his career, moving him one ahead of Alain Prost into second in the all-time list behind Michael Schumacher, who took 91 wins. Hamilton again brought up the fact that he has had much the worse of the reliability at Mercedes this season. This has included three engine failures that have directly impacted his points tally, especially one while leading in Malaysia last month.
Hamilton said: “I am going to continue what I am doing. Nico has finished every single race this year apart from Barcelona which neither of us finished. “I’m hunting. All I can do is do what I’m doing right now. The team are giving me a great car. I am going to give it everything I’ve got and all I can do is try to win the race. Right now I am just enjoying the moment.” Assuming neither has a technical problem, the advantage is very much in Rosberg’s favour as Mercedes have dominated the season and it is highly unlikely that any other team will be able to compete with them at the Yas Marina circuit.
Championship rugby league club Bradford Bulls have been placed in administration for the third time. Bradford, who entered administration in both 2012 and 2014, faced a winding-up petition from HM Revenue & Customs in October. Bulls chairman Marc Green said he had been talking to investors but “pressure from HMRC has forced the club to be put into this position to save its future.” Green has been in charge of the club since 2014. He added: “There is a dispute between ourselves and HMRC which we have been working hard to resolve since the winding-up petition was issued and despite two adjournments from the courts to resolve this matter we have been unable to do so. “We were concerned over the ability to secure a third adjournment and therefore this action became unavoidable to protect the club. “I will be working closely with the administrators over the coming weeks and it is my intention to regain this club from them within the shortest practicable time frame.
“Regardless of whether I remain at the helm of this great club, I will ensure all memberships already purchased for next season will remain valid, as will the offer under which they were purchased. I believe the future of Bradford Bulls is still strong.” The Bulls, four-time Super League Grand Final winners, were relegated from the top flight of rugby league in 2014. They finished fifth in the Championship in 2016. In a statement, the Rugby Football League said any decision regarding Bradford’s membership and possible sporting sanctions would be made in due course at the discretion of the governing body’s board. “It is undoubtedly a painful and uncertain time for supporters, players and employees,” the statement added. “In these circumstances the RFL will always seek to support a club in difficulty for the sake of those directly affected and also on behalf of the chairmen and boards of well managed clubs who deserve stability.”
Rosberg said: “It is going to be a great, exciting race weekend, a great battle for sure. I would like to win the race, definitely. I am going to try to do that. Feeling good, so let’s see.” Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: “As Bernie [Ecclestone, F1’s commercial boss] would have ordered it, showdown in Abu Dhabi. They are going to drive it out on track. “We just have to give them two cars so they can fight it out on the track. My biggest nightmare would be a mechanical issue but this is how the sport is.”

Jorge Lorenzo beats Marc Marquez to win at Valencia MotoGP on final Yamaha ride Jorge Lorenzo completed his nineyear stay at Yamaha with victory at MotoGP’s season-ending Valencia Grand Prix. The Spaniard, who will join Ducati in 2017, produced a good start from pole position and led throughout. Three-time champion Lorenzo, 29, ended the 30-lap race 1.19 seconds ahead of Honda’s Marc Marquez and 6.60secs in front of Andrea Iannone of Ducati. Marquez, 23, had already sealed his third world championship title with three races of the season to spare. He paid the price for a slow start at Circuito Ricardo Tormo, and while he battled to finish second, Lorenzo made the most of the open track to move into a five-second lead. As Lorenzo’s front tyre showed wear late on, Marquez ate into the advantage but could not overhaul the 2015 champion. In a farewell letter to Yamaha issued earlier this week, Lorenzo said his nine years with the team were
“unrepeatable” and “unforgettable”. The result means he ends the 18-round season third in the championship table, behind Marquez and Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi, who finished fourth on the day. Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa crashed out on his return, just four weeks after he fractured his collarbone, leg and foot in a crash in Japan. Valencia GP results 1. Jorge Lorenzo (Spa) Yamaha 45 minutes 54.228 seconds, 2. Marc Marquez (Spa) Honda 45:55.413, 3. Andrea Iannone (Ita) Ducati 46:00.831, 4. Valentino Rossi (Ita) Yamaha 46:01.896, 5.
