Spain dismantles one of EU's main hubs for fake goods Authorities in Spain dismantled one The majority of those detained were
of the European Union's main hubs for counterfeit goods, arresting 71 people and seizing close to 270,000 fake watches, jewellery and other goods, police and Europol said on Friday. The international gang that acquired and sold the counterfeit products operated in and around La Jonquera in northeastern Spain, a town close to the French border known for its brothels and supermarkets selling low cost alcohol and tobacco. Spanish police told reporters the products seized were worth over eight million euros at market prices -- "the biggest (operation) ever conducted in Spain" against violations of intellectual property (IP). In a statement, European police agency Europol, which assisted Spanish forces in the operation, said they had dismantled a "main European Union hub" for the distribution of counterfeit goods. Police staged the operation on November 29 when they made the arrests and inspected more than 40 premises, seizing clothes, shoes, sunglasses, watches, jewellery, leather goods and other products. "In some of the premises, investigators discovered the existence of secret warehouses hidden behind false walls, used by the criminals to conceal the newest illicit merchandise in case of a police intervention," said Europol.
Israeli or Moroccan. Chris Vansteenkiste, head of counterfeiting at Europol, said the region was "one of the black spots in the European Union" for this type of offence, along with the border between the Czech Republic and Germany. The gang "also used a sophisticated network of fictitious companies and front men to launder the proceeds of their criminal activities, which are thought to have exceeded nine million euros", Europol said. Many of the products were imported from abroad, in particular China, Portugal and Turkey. Other products, mainly leather goods and belts, were counterfeited directly in Spain. expatica

Spain's Ceuta enclave stormed by migrants
African migrants run on a road after crossing the border fence between Morocco and Spain"s north African enclave of Ceuta, December 9, 2016Image copyright Reuters Image caption Local authorities were taken by surprise as hundreds crossed the border early on Friday At least 400 people have broken through the border fence between Morocco and the enclave of Ceuta, which is part of Spain. The migrants, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, stormed different points of the 6m-high (19ft) barbed-wire fence from 06:15 local time (07:15 GMT) on Friday. It is the biggest single breach of the border in a decade, local media report. Two border guards were injured in the surprise assault on the border, according to Spanish authorities. Local TV footage showed dozens of migrants celebrating their crossing, while others appeared exhausted, lying on the pavement with visible cuts to their feet and hands. African migrants sit on top of a border fence during an attempt to cross into Spanish territories, between Morocco and SpainImage copyright Reuters Image caption Many climbed over the high, barbed-wire fences Most of those who made the crossing have now been detained, with 20% still unaccounted for, Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said. Ceuta is a major crossing point for those seeking work or asylum in Europe. Together with a second Spanish enclave, Melilla, it is the European Union's only land border with Africa. BBC
‘Santa Clauses’ burgle Valencia’s Apple store
FOUR men dressed up as Santa Claus held up the Apple shop in Valencia, making off with a large number of iPads, says head of public safety Juan Carlos Moragues. Speaking last Saturday, Moragues said the thieves escaped at high speed – despite the city centre’s now having a 30-kilometre-per-hour limit – in a car which had been stolen on Wednesday night from Manises, where Valencia airport is based. They used it at around 14.00 on the day after pinching it as a getaway car, and it was found burnt
out on the main road towards Riba-roja de Túria, close to Manises and Valencia. A fifth man had been waiting in the stolen vehicle whilst the four Father Christmases stormed the shop. Moragues says the four Santa Clauses burst into the premises, shouting at all customers inside to get down on the floor. It is not known whether they were armed, but no weapons were seen and nobody was hurt. None of the culprits has yet been caught. thinkspain
Cut-price fashion chain Blanco to shut down, costing 850 jobs
BUDGET high-street clothing chain Blanco has announced all its stores will now close and all 850 employees made redundant after having declared itself bankrupt for the second time in Spain and Portugal. The company is said to owe all staff 23 days' pay from November which is overdue, but unions say Blanco's management is ready to negotiate the 'best possible conditions' for outgoing employees. Closures of the brand's 102 shops will be gradual, but will not start until the Mercantile Court of Toledo approves its second bankruptcy application. The company, which has liabilities totalling €133 million, has applied to the court for permission to wind up – unlike
the previous occasion when it went into receivership, in 2013 – and has already shut down its website right in the middle of the Christmas shopping season. A message on Blanco.com says anyone with online orders placed will be contacted as soon as possible. Last time Blanco went into receivership, it managed to pull itself back from the brink – the firm's then owner, Bernardo Blanco, filed for bankruptcy on the chain's behalf due to extremely serious financial and cashflow problems, but hoped to seek a viable future for the company. It was duly bought out by AC Modus, a process which took nearly three years, but the new owners say the Spain and Portugal divisions have 'failed to
generate profits', despite 'every effort'. AC Modus has spent the last two months seeking investors to keep the business afloat, but that this quest has 'not borne fruit'. The company launched its third mass redundancy procedure in September this year, but eventually scrapped it without any jobs being lost due to previous 'restructures' having led to 900 employees leaving prior to its commencing – although it has not been clarified whether they left voluntarily or were laid off. Last year, 'staff restructures' affected 189 workers, although when Blanco went into receivership in June 2013, the process cost 711 employees their jobs. thinkspain

CASA CARMA
The new household furnishing and homely goods shop in Turre Back in March, a shop, selling household furnishings, including curtains, cushions, bed linen, drapes, throws and doorstops, was opened in Mojacar between Coi and No 353 cafe’s, by Carol and Margaret (wife of our sports correspondent Tony Matthews). Now these same two ladies have opened a similar shop in Turre… and already their efforts have been rewarded, with high praise and congratulations pouring in from all walks of life. In fact, over 300 visitors attended the official opening on Saturday, 10 December last. This shop (store) will certainly benefit ex-pats, Spaniards and local people in general, and with the help of friends, neighbours, longstanding residents and all those visitors who came into the Mojacar shop on a regular basis, this new venture is a great asset to the community as Carol and Marg will also supply made-to-measure curtains as well as facilities to carry out alterations and recovering. And everything they
Anti-fur activists bare all in Barcelona
Animal rights defenders stripped down Sunday in the Spanish tourist hub of Barcelona to draw attention to the cruelty of the fur industry. Dozens of activists, naked, doused in fake blood and piled together in imitation of a heap of animal carcasses, staged a lie-in in the centre of town. "How many lives just for a coat?" read a sign in English held up by Luisa Escribano, 53, and her daughter Barbara, 21, in the middle of the protesters. "It is very important to draw attention to what happens to the animals, and which goes largely unnoticed. They suffer and die on farms, but their

Turre Dames Christmas Market Although it was overcast and rain was predicted for later, this did not discourage Dames in Turre from holding their Christmas Market on Saturday 3rd December. Arriving in the square at the crack of dawn, members began erecting their stalls and getting into the spirit of Christmas. Tables decorated with Christmas cloths and Fairy lights, stall holders dressed in Christmas outfits and the aroma of Mulled Wine drifted through the air giving that extra warm Christmas feeling. Soon the square was buzzing with eager

Each year over 60 million animals -- including over 32 million in the European Union -- are killed around the world to make coats and other items from their skin, according to international animal rights group AnimaNaturalis which staged the demonstration Europe produces 70 percent of the world's mink fur and 63 percent of its fox fur, according to the group. Denmark and Finland are the world's largest producers and exporters of mink and fox fur. Other major producers are Russia, Canada, Sweden and the Netherlands. expatica

A PRIEST has designed a mobile phone App for parishioners with a guilty complex to help them find their nearest confessional at any time of the day or night – and says he even has members of his congregation asking about their moral dilemmas via WhatsApp. Ricardo Latorre says the Confesor Go App is not designed for Catholics to make their confessions by text message - “that would be sacrilege,” he insists – but its built-in GPS locator informs users in real time where their nearest vicar is, his name (since Roman Catholic priests cannot, as yet, be women), age, year he was ordained, and languages he is able to take confessions in. It even gives a photograph so that he can be easily recognised if he is currently in a public place. Vicars can then change their status to 'available' or 'busy' according to what they are doing at the time. Said to be simple to use, Confesor Go has a separate tab titled En el mapa ('on the map') showing geo-locator tags for the various available priests, although parishioners can search Por cercanía ('sort by nearest'), with a Google Map function indicating how to get there and how many kilometres away the vicar is, or Por provincias ('sort by provinces') if the worshipper is prepared to travel. Many congregation members who, once, would regularly attend confessional to offload have 'lost the habit', says Father Rafael Pérez, whose parishioners have started using the App 'with great success'. “It is an extremely useful tool – some people have even
contacted me via non-conventional channels, such as WhatsApp or email, to talk about specific personal worries,” Father Pérez says. He, too, considers confessional via phone messages would be unholy, but thinks it a 'positive move' for congregation members to have his contact details in their phones so he is readily available to help them. Inventor Ricardo Latorre recalls that the Pope wants the Church to embrace modern society and move into the 21st century, and that the various parishes in Spain are mostly attempting to do so in order to meet the needs of 'Generation 2.0'. “One of the Pope's greatest wishes was for us to get out on the street more, get closer to the people, and make an effort to be more open and available to the public,” Latorre explains. “And this means not just being 'on duty' in our church itself, but also in other places which are more accessible for people – many worshippers have lost the habit of going to church in person, and are reluctant to return after years of being away.” Confesor Go is now listed in Android Play Store and Apple App Store, and within 24 hours of its going live this week, over 2,000 mobile phone users had already downloaded it. The Church is gradually becoming more 'digital' in Spain – mass via podcast or even Skype and FaceTime is now the norm in a small number of parishes, particularly those with younger priests at the helm. thinkspain

December 2016
The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galraith
“Her head had bled a little into the snow. The face was crushed and swollen, one eye reduced to a pucker, the other showing as a sliver of dull white distended lids.” A dramatic opening, the death of a beautiful supermodel in suspicious circumstances, having fallen from her Mayfair penthouse caused a big stir with the paparazzi. Detective Inspector Roy Carver and Detective Sergeant Eric Wardle were on the case. Lula Landy, like the late Princess Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. It seems that both women were hounded to death by the pressure of celebrity and attention. Her death dominated the news showing her “flawless face, her lithe and sculpted body” but within three months “The frenzy wore itself into staleness.” Lula was an interesting character, having been adopted by a wealthy white family. She had been investigating her biological roots and had discovered a black half-brother who she had made contact with. She was expelled from school for dabbling in drugs and ran off to London to live rough with addicts. Her on-off boyfriend was an addict, violent at times, a musician called Evan Duffield and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been signed up by Guy Some the fashion designer after winning a modelling contract worth 5 million pounds over 2 years. When she died she had accumulated a fortune of 10 million. Before her death there had been a row with Duffield and he became chief suspect but at this stage, the conclusion amounted to: “The poor cow jumped. There was no one else there.” No further investigation. Three months later we meet her adopted half-brother, John Bristow, a lawyer for Landry, May and Patterson. He chooses Cordoran Strike , Private Detective with an equally interesting past who is down on his luck. His military career came to an abrupt end with a serious injury when he lost part of his leg. His long term girlfriend and his
turbulent relationship with Charlotte has finally floundered and he has nowhere to sleep other than his office in Denmark Street. His finances have hit rock-bottom and he has acquired a temp called Robin, intelligent and down-to-earth who he cannot afford without any paying clients. Bristow seems to be the lifeline that Strike desperately needs. He chose Strike to reopen the case of Lula because of his connection with Charlie who was John’s adopted brother who died when he was 9 years of age. Strike and Charlie had been bosom friends for two months prior to Charlie’s fatal accident. “They say my sister killed herself. I don’t believe it.” Strike is initially sceptical and reluctant to take on the case having decided that the police investigation was thorough and he believed the final verdict of suicide. But he is interested to hear evidence from a neighbour, Tansy Bestigui who overheard a heated argument seconds before Lula died. She was convinced that Lula was pushed over her balcony. The police had dismissed her evidence because she had been taking cocaine. Strike takes on the case and he is offered twice the going rate which will partly solve his mountainous debts. A string of interviews with all of the characters who had had contact with Lula make it compelling reading and the suspense is kept ticking over until the finale which is likened to an Agatha Christie climax when the murderer is revealed, and all the facts of the case spilled out in thorough detail. Cormoran Strike comes out of this very well. He outwitted the police force and deserves our uttermost respect. By the end of the case his reputation has spread and he has clients coming to his dingy office. Things are looking up. You’ll have guessed by now that J.K. Rowling was the author. When she sent her manuscript anonymously to Orion Books it was rejected. The sequel was published recently: “The Silkworm” which I am sure will be as successful. Rowling is certainly a master storyteller and I loved it.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience, you can contact me to make an appointment to come to my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk! Last week we looked at one way to stop Microsoft Windows 10 from spying on you. This week, as promised, I will be giving a list of these switches that will do the same thing but without any risk to your computer. There are two times when you can change these options: during the initial startup where all sorts of questions and options are thrown at you; and any time after that. For me it is like fitting a better lock to your house - better to stop access before any get taken! Almost everything is inside the ‘Settings’ App under the ‘Privacy’ section. What follows are guidelines that will help prevent the unwanted, intrusiveness from windows 10. 1. If you see the word ‘Advertising’ / ‘Ads’ or any variant – turn it off. 2. Smartscreen is a security measure that is supposed to prevent programs ‘Auto Running’ unless ‘passed’ by Microsoft first – if you are old enough and smart enough to know your own mind, turn it off. 3. If you see the phrase ‘Send Microsoft’ or ‘Local relevant content (advertising) - turn it off. 4. If you don’t want to be tracked turn ‘Localisation’ off 5. Under ‘Speech, Inking, & Typing’ turn off everything you can find; click on the button ‘Stop getting to know me’ and use the link to go to the ‘Bing’ (Microsoft) servers and remove stored information. 6. Minimise all Diagnostic and Usage
Data by choosing ‘Basic feedback’ and change ‘automatic’ to ‘Never’ (this will probably be disabled in future updates. 7. Turn ‘Cortana’ off 8. Turn off ‘Bing’ integration. 9. Here’s an important one – The system can be encrypted and the recovery key sent to Microsoft for ‘Safety’. Set your start up to ‘local’ which doesn’t automatically log you in to the Microsoft servers and prevent the encryption taking place automatically! 10. Windows Defender is Good! Keep it but only use the ‘Real-time Protection’. Should you accidentally turn it off then Windows will turn it back on again for you. Turn Off ‘Cloud-based Protection’. 11. Don’t use Microsoft ‘Edge’ for browsing the internet, You can’t turn it off but there is the safer ‘Microsoft Internet Explorer’ still available or better still Mozilla Firefox or a similar open-source web browser! 12. If you see the word ‘Sync’ - turn it off. All your passwords and account settings are stored on the Microsoft servers. 13. Take every opportunity to clear personal data by going to https:// bing.com/account/personalization and https://bing.com/profile/history 14. To prevent windows 10 from updating at the worst possible time, set the connection option to ‘Metered’ and in the ‘Choose how updates are delivered’ section click on the round button marked ‘PC’s on my local network’ and then turn off the switch above. 15. Finally, under the section ‘Manage WiFi Setting’ turn both switches off and untick the box at the bottom. You are as secure as I possible (for now) from prying eyes with Windows 10! So until next time ...

950 121 936 - sales@soltimes.com There are no new developments for sale in Baqueira but the demand is there. The last development in the area was The White Angel Baqueira, part of The White Angel brand of new developments in upmarket parts of Spain (the first one was in Ibiza). The project was in Val de Ruda, with three phases of 50 homes, each phase selling out in a year, 150 homes sold in three years. I helped The Sunday to be for affluent Spanish buyers, so Times do a piece on Baqueira property it is recovering with the Spanish economy. Buyers from outside of Spain are not important. Figures from Urban Data Analytics reported in the Spanish daily El Mundo reveal that house prices are rising in Baqueira, where it now costs an average of 2,805 €/ m2 to buy, and 16€/m2/month to rent. There are no developments for sale, and resale properties in the fashionable Val de Ruda urbanisation at the foot of the piste start at €400,000 for two beds and go up to €2m for chalets. Prices for small second hand flats in other parts of Baqueira start at around €150,000. Homes in Baqueira Prices fell around 50% peak (2008) to bottom (2013), and a duplex that sold for more than €1m at the top of the market now sells for around €550,000. But prices have now risen for several years, and look set to carry on rising. For example, two bed flats in Val de Ruda are up from €360,000 last year to €410,000 now, and increase of 14% in a year.
SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT A tale of two Spanish ski resorts: Part I – Baqueira
The housing markets in Spain’s two best-known ski resorts are going in different directions, as Baqueira recovers whilst Sierra Nevada remains in crisis made worse by Brexit. In this two-part series I look at each market, starting with Baqueira. Located in the Catalan Pyrenees (Lleida province, Catalonia), Baqueira is Spain’s most rated and upmarket ski resort where demand is growing, supplies are limited, and prices are rising. Demand is basically 60% from Madrid, 20% from the Basque Country, 10% from Catalonia, and 10% a mixture from other regions and nationalities, including the French and British. But the market is and always has been 90%+ Spanish. Baqueira ticks a lot of boxes. The skiing is great, the surroundings are beautiful, the town is attractive, the housing stock is high quality, and the apres ski is typically Spanish, and therefore much more fun than the Alps. That helps explain why the market is recovering in Baqueira better than other Spanish resorts like Sierra Nevada and Formigal. As far as skiing in Spain goes, Baqueira is the place

UK ‘s current GDP growth rate won’t last, warns business body
936 1 2 1 0 5 9 Tel: es.com im lt o s @ s sale
Fully Legal
“The business as usual” approach taken by many firms following the Brexit vote has helped boost UK growth this year, but it won’t last, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned. The business body expects 2.1% GDP growth this year, up from the 1.8% it forecast just three months ago. But uncertainty over the UK’s EU relationship and higher inflation will “dampen medium term growth,” it said. It expects UK GDP to grow 1.1% next year, and 1.4% in 2018. A separate report on business conditions from accountancy and services group BDO found business output rose for the first time in November after 17 months of decline. It said this suggested that “for now” the UK economy had stabilised “in a lower gear” than it had been running at before the referendum. However, it said, business optimism
was continuing to fall, and it expected “a bumpy road ahead in 2017 for British businesses and the economy”. ‘Business as usual’ The BCC said its upgraded growth forecast for this year was driven by the stronger-than-expected performance of the economy in the third quarter when the economy grew by 0.5%. However, it said its 1.1% forecast for next year would mark the weakest annual rate of growth for the UK since the 2008 financial crisis. BCC director general Dr Adam Marshall said firms’ “business as usual” approach since the EU referendum had helped keep conditions buoyant so far, but it expected the fall in the value of sterling to start to have a greater impact. The pound has fallen around 15% against the dollar and 10% against the euro
since the EU referendum. The BCC expects this to push up inflation, and hit consumer spending as wage growth is eroded by higher prices, as well as business investment. “Lower sterling and rising inflation are now starting to affect business communities and consumers across the UK,” said Dr Marshall. He urged the government to do as much as it could to help UK firms overcome risk, saying it should start by clarifying the future status of existing EU workers as soon as possible “to end the insecurity now facing employees and businesses alike”. The BCC is a national body of 52 accredited chambers of commerce across the UK, representing over 100,000 businesses in total. During the EU referendum it decided not to campaign for either side because its membership was split.

Why getting an energy efficiency certificate for your property is essential
Owners are required to contract a registered technician to produce a report
IF you own a property in Spain and are thinking of selling or renting, there is – unsurprisingly – quite a lot of paperwork to get in order beforehand. For sellers, that includes copies of the deeds (escritura) or an extract (nota simple) from the Property Registry; receipts that prove municipal property tax (Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles (IBI), better known as rates in the UK), refuse collection (basura), and, if applicable, community fees (gastos de comunidad) are paid up to date; and an energy efficiency certificate (Certificado de Eficiencia Energetica (CEE)). While those who intend to rent a property are not required to have quite so many pieces of paper, they also need to be in possession of a CEE. Since June 2013, when Spain passed Real Decreto 235/2013 to comply with the terms of European Union Directive 2010/31/UE, obtaining a CEE has been mandatory for everyone who builds, sells or rents a property anywhere in the country. The law has two goals: to promote energy efficiency and to better inform buyers and users, via the use of objective criteria. To get a CEE, owners are required to contract a registered technician to produce a report that includes such information as: location and orientation; details about construction; installed energy systems, such as heating and lighting, and projected consumption in kWh/m2 on an annual basis; recommendations for improvements; and a description of the tests carried out to obtain
the data. Once issued, a CEE is valid for 10 years. The first page of a CEE report features a bar chart, similar to those on electronics and white goods, that rates a property’s overall efficiency, in terms of the power it will consume and the amount of CO2 equivalent it produces, on a colour-coded scale of A to G, where A is the most efficient. Once you have a CEE, you are then required to register it, within a period of one month, with the Andalucian Registry of Energy Certificates, operated by the Junta (the regional government). In either case, whether you decide to sell or let via an estate agent like us at Terra Meridiana or independently, in accordance with Article 12.2 of the Real Decreto, the property’s energy efficiency rating has to be included in any advertising or promotional materials used in its sale or rental. As a result, owners need to obtain a CEE before starting to market a property, rather than just in time for exchanging or signing contracts. While there are a few exceptions to the rule, the most relevant for the kind of clients we usually work for is properties that are used for less than four months a year. In this case, owners are not obliged to obtain a CEE. Instead, they have to provide a formal declaration in writing and, upon sale, have to ensure that the notary adds a clause to the deeds that specifies their exemption from the requirement to have a CEE for that reason. Failure to comply with the law leaves owners at risk of fines ranging from €300-6,000, depending on the seriousness of the infraction olivepress

Local taxes to rise in a quarter of Spanish municipalities next year
Local property rates will rise in many Spanish municipalities next year thanks to an update in cadastral values just approved by the Government Cadastral values have just been updated in 2,452 municipalities all over Spain, and will rise in 1,895 of them, which will translate into higher taxes like IBI and the plusvalia that vendors have to pay. Cadastral values, which are (normally) lower than market values, are used to calculate taxes like local rates (IBI) and the plusvalía tax paid by vendors when they sell. Town halls are allowed to update cadastral values to reflect market realities every five years, and are obliged to update them every ten years. However, most municipalities fail to meet
that deadline, and updates are done on average every 21 years. Cadastral values, and corresponding taxes, are going up in municipalities that last updated before the boom, and falling in areas that updated more recently. Rates will rise in Valencia City, Granada, Alicante, and Tarragona, amongst others. More than half of the place where rates will rise have not updated their cadastral values since 1990 or before. IBI will go up next year in municipalities where cadastral values have been increased in this update, but because of the way IBI is calculated most homeowners will not see much of an increase in their quarterly IBI bill. They might find the pending increase in tax on alcohol and tobacco takes more out of their pocket.

Is property facing a meltdown in 2017?
some kind of price rise. Halifax housing economist Martin Ellis says property is now unaffordable for many Britons, contributing to the slowdown: “Very low mortgage rates and an acute shortage of properties for sale should support price levels although growth may slow over the coming months.” housing market propertyGETTY The lack of fresh properties on the market should seem to help sustain price growth The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors confirms the impression of an increasingly sluggish market, with new buyer interest “historically low” and further falls in the number of homes for sale as the property shortage bites. The lack of fresh properties coming to market looks set to continue, it says, and should help to sustain price growth, at least outside London. One thing is certain: Brexit is not to blame for any slowdown, despite claims by Project Fear that leaving the EU would trigger a crash. Brian Murphy, head of Contact: 607 705 085 or 687 938 466 C/Llanos, Bedar (Next to the Miramar Restaurant) lending for Mortgage Advice Bureau, says: Open: Monday-Friday 10.00am-3.30pm “The Halifax figures are www.olivehouse-es.com an encouraging sign Attractive 2 bed, 1 bath townhouse that postreferendum it is located just a minute’s walk from has been a question of the main street in the popular town ‘keep calm and carry on’ of Tabernas and 5 minutes from when it comes to buying the renowned tourist attractions property. THE HOUSING market is finally slowing after years of rampant growth and many Britons will give hearty thanks for that. The assumption that homeowners automatically celebrate price rises has been blown apart by the crazy growth of recent years, which has made the majority of people uneasy about locking the next generation of buyers out of the market. Many will welcome a slowdown as Britons take on ever more mortgage debt to chase house prices relentlessly upwards, leaving them vulnerable to rising interest rates. So will 2017 be the year that sanity finally returns to the property market? SLOW GROWTH Last week Halifax reported that house prices in the three months to November were 6 per cent higher than last year, but this understates the scale of the slowdown, with growth at just 0.8 per cent in the last quarter. Confidence in the UK housing market has fallen to its lowest point in three years, yet most Britons still expect

Question: I jointly own a property in Spain with somebody I no longer get on with and he refuses to sell and split the funds. What can I do? Answer: The best option would be to jointly sell or for one to buy the other one out. In Spain there is a special deed which is used to do this and allows the person acquiring the half to pay tax of 1.5% of the total value of the property, as opposed to the normal transfer tax of 8% on that half. If the other party refuses to go along and be reasonable we can force the issue. There is a special court procedure to deal with this. Our experience shows that as soon as the other party
realises that we can indeed force the issue using the courts, they tend to agree to settle the case, very often in favourable conditions to our clients. Typical scenario: A couple purchases a property in Spain in joint names. The relationship deteriorates. The economically weak partner will wish to sell and the other party claims that he/she will only pay a ridiculously low amount for the other half, and that he will not accept any different. The necessity of money sometimes leads the weak partner to accept an unreasonable settlement due to the urgency for money.

eurozone needs more risk sharing
HELSINKI (Reuters) The euro zone needs a way to share economic risks through a fiscal mechanism and through capital markets, the head of the euro zone bailout fund said, noting a euro zone budget did not have to entail debt mutualisation or permanent transfers. European Union institutions and governments are re-thinking how the single currency area is organised after crises since 2008 showed weaknesses in the way it is governed. The European Commission, the EU executive arm, is to come up with proposals on how to further develop the euro zone, which now comprises 19 countries, by the middle of next year. “From my perspective as an economist, the biggest remaining
flyers.
challenge in the EMU is the lack of economic risk-sharing,” the head of the European Stability Mechanism Klaus Regling said. “This can take place through fiscal mechanisms and through capital markets. Together, they help smooth consumption, demand and business cycles and make national economies more resilient,” he said. He said that such risk-sharing was underdeveloped in the euro zone, especially through capital markets. In the United States as much as 80 percent of an asymmetric shock was evened out thanks to the mechanisms in place there while in the euro zone it was below 40 percent, he said. The whole European Union of 28 countries has a budget, equal to 1 percent of gross domestic product which provides transfers from
the richer countries to the poorer ones. Regling said a separate euro zone budget would not need to make any additional transfers or joint debt issuance -- a notion that Germany, euro zone’s main economy, is adamantly against. “It could be worth to set up an additional fiscal capacity for the euro area for risk-sharing purposes,” he said.
23
“One idea for such a capacity is a rainy day fund, something that exists in most U.S. states. Countries would get support from such a fund in bad times, and they would pay the money back once they recover,” he said. “Another option is a centrally managed US-style unemployment fund countries would pay into and draw on during a recession,” he said. viewpoint
Alquerian custom, epithets and dining
Epithets can be a means of implying esteem or in Alqueria’s case the reverse. In Spain generally it is impolite to use one’s nickname to one’s face. Using them openly is however the norm in Alqueria, especially during one of the many heated verbal exchanges that take place nightly after the bars close. The obese olive mill owner Rodriquez, has many such names. These range from the obvious, El Gordo through the sycophantic El Jefe to the unprintable. Manuela has a vast array of names for him all of which fall into the unprintable category. Epithets applied to Manuela are in the main complementary. La Guapa, La Preciosa and even La Lujuria by the young men of the village who know her well. It is the village girls who are less pretty than Manuela who call her La Siniestra. Unkind, true perhaps but unkind. Blythe Gruntmore alone is immune from this onslaught of derogatory titles. He cannot understand a word of the Alquerian dialect and Alquerians are mystified by his Geordie utterances. He is known as El Triste, The Sad One, meant to show sympathy. The villagers think his Geordie accent is a horrific speech impediment. Dining can be a purely functional exercise or it can be a formal ritual. Whichever it is the rite of breaking bread is centuries old. Enjoying a communal bowl of
Alquerian Bagre Estofado is an informal affair but still etiquette applies. The bowl’s contents are segmented as in the traditional Spanish way with each person eating almost to their divide. It is not polite to eat to the dividing line but to leave a small layer of food adjacent to it. The Alquerian method has been modified in as much as mining of the adjacent portion is much practised. When the person next to you is distracted for whatever reason a diligent excavator can dig into his neighbours portion. If he possesses the necessary dexterity, he can leave nothing but a thin crust for the unwary diner. This can lead to arguments and spoon fights often break out. Those who practise this method of food reclamation often have their spoons specially sharpened on oilstones to aid swifter hollowing and to help defend themselves. On formal occasions it is necessary to show your appreciation of the cuisine. Simple exclamations of praise are considered vulgar in Alqueria so the ‘belch’ is employed. Probably based on an old Moorish custom of the region, it is exploited with relish in the village. The belch, after or during dinner must resonate and be audible to all. When members of the opposing barrio are present, sectarian rivalry comes into play and the belches become progressively louder and more robust. On such occasions the noise and emitted gases eventually render the dining-room uninhabitable. All naked flames have to be extinguished to avoid explosion. This is a condition on all Alquerian insurance policies. Dinner invitations to those outside the village are rarely accepted.

Jos & Barbara’s Jolly Big Adventure
As instructed by the young lady propping up the bus stop Barbara and I took the first Calle on the left. The blameless inhabitants were presumably sunk in a deep and dreamless sleep, as neither a person nor a street light was to be seen. The Calle ended in a T junction. OK, I’ll turn right, then right again, I thought. That will take us back to civilisation. There was no right turn, nor any sign of civilization. I had no option but to carry straight on. The road sucked in its sides, bucked and swerved a bit, but I was confident that I knew where it was taking us. Then we ran out of tarmac. Never mind, I know where we’ll come out, I assured Barbara as I confidently headed off-road into the gloaming. Very shortly I got the distinct feeling that we were not going where I thought we were going. However, this Rambla must go somewhere, and as there was no option to turn round, we soldiered on over bumps and dips and rounds stray boulders. Barbara maintained a stoic silence only punctuated by an occasional sotto voce oooooo. The only other sound was the subliminal messaging from Henry. ‘I don’t do off-road. I am not one of those common 4X4s.’ Then, Halleluiah! We came to a bifurcation. Inspired, I bore right, heading back to the inhabited world! The Rambla got narrower, the sides got steeper, Barbara’s oooos increased in frequency and volume, and evidence of human occupation
By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com
did not appear. Another fork appeared out of the looming dark. I stopped. Neither track looked welcoming, but at least I could turn round here, and head back. Or I could back up – several kilometres in the dark, on a track liberally peppered with boulders and barely wide enough for Henry to squeeze through. I was not keen! I engaged first and pointed his nose across the track. I put him in reverse, and backed his bum up to the near vertical side of the Rambla, where he settled contentedly sideways on to the track and announced that he was comfortable here, right up to his axles in grit. He was not to be shifted. His whole attitude said ‘Told you so.’ At the risk of being obvious I said to Barbara ‘We’re stuck.’ I reached for the phone and tapped in 112. ‘What is your emergency?’ Enquired 112. ‘We are 2 women. Our car is stuck in a Rambla.’ ‘Where?’ ‘I don’t know.’

Have your figgy pudding and eat it! Christmas is a time for putting the diet on hold and tucking into your favourite festive foods.
about the extra calories they consume over the festive period, according to a recent survey by 5:2 diet brand LighterLife Fast.
But if you’re conscious of your weight, it’s hard to shake off the guilt that comes with eating that second (or third) mince pie.
But Angela says that for all their obsessiveness and control around food, highly restrained eaters don’t succeed in eating fewer calories anyway.
Now nutritionist Angela Dowden has revealed her top 10 ways to make sure you can still enjoy Christmas feasting but without any of the shame that can come with overeating. GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION Nearly half of Brits admit to feeling guilty
feelings of deprivation that build into cravings and guilt.'
STOP WHEN YOU'RE FULL Listen for the body signals that tell you that you are no longer hungry, says Angela. 'Pause in the middle of a meal or festive food and ask yourself how the food really tastes, and what your current fullness level of fullness.
'It’s better to give yourself permission to enjoy modest amounts of the Christmas foods you really love and to enjoy them without feeling guilty,' she says.
'Too many of us just eat right past those feelings of being full and into the uncomfortable zone.
'If you tell yourself that you can't or shouldn't have a favourite food, it can lead to intense
'However, pausing and being mindful as you go, can help you enjoy your food without
having the physical discomfort and guilt later.' EAT THE PROTEIN AND VEGETABLES FIRST Angela has some top tips for what to east first in a Christmas dinner: the protein and the vegetables. She says: 'It may help you to naturally eat less of a blow out Christmas dinner if you tuck into the lean turkey and Brussels sprouts first, which have protein and fibre to help fill you up. 'Leave the roast spuds, sausages until the edge is off your appetite and you could find you eat less of them.' cont page 30......

PICK YOUR TREATS ‘Save your calories for what you really fancy something,’ says Angela. ‘If, for example, Christmas pud is your absolutely favourite thing, you’ll be more psychologically and physically satisfied by eating a bowl than if you try to be “good” with a bowl of fruit salad. ‘The main point is to spend your calories carefully on the foods you really like and not waste them on the ones you like less. ‘If you have a banquet laid out in front of you, take a minute to make selected choices of things that will really tickle your taste buds rather than just piling your plate.’ KEEP YOURSELF WELL NOURISHED ‘Keep your body fuelled with adequate energy, protein, carbohydrates and micronutrients (vitamins and mineral) is important,’ says Angela. ‘For a start, once you get too hungry all intentions of moderate and conscious eating fly out the window. Secondly, good nutrition means you’re better able to deal with stress and feel more likely to stay in control of your eating overall. ‘Simple rules are to get your five a day fruit and veg, have a good breakfast (like poached egg on wholemeal toast) and to stay hydrated with calorie-free fluids.’ TRICK YOURSELF ‘Something as simple as how you serve your Christmassy snacks and nibbles can cut down on how much you eat,’ says Angela. ‘Studies by Dr Brian Wansink and
December 2016
team at Cornell University’s Food and Brand lab in America compared how many savoury snacks students nibbled from two big bowls or four half size ones, and found consumption was 56 per cent more from the larger bowls. If you pour drinks into taller, slimmer glasses and put your meal on a smaller 10 inch (or 25 cm) plate rather than a bigger 12 inch (30 cm) one, you’ll also eat drink and eat less without noticing.’ HAVE PAY BACK DAYS Angela says that maintaining a sensible diet regime over Christmas can give them much more psychological control and avoid expanding waistlines. She advocates the 5:2 diet. ‘This involves five days of normal eating each week and then two days of eating around just 600 calories. ‘If you’re too busy and stressed around Christmas, using a meal replacement such as LighterLife Fast can be a good idea as not only are all the calories counted for you, but you’re also guaranteed balanced nutrition with 100 per cent of the recommended amounts of important vitamins and minerals.’ GET ACTIVE We tend to let exercise fall by the wayside at Christmas time, but Angela advises you to stick to your fitness regime. She says: ‘Physical activity is a mood booster that can make you feel better about yourself and stave off feelings of guilt around Christmas eating (as well as help burn calories). The key its to choose something you enjoy so you stick at it.’ dailymail.co.uk

The nudists are without beach in Vera
Current state of Vera's nudist beach. | M.C. In the last 20 years 60% of the sand strip has been lost and the beach has gone from 70 meters to less than 30 Neighbors denounce that lack of regeneration endangers homes and tourism HEMEROTECA. The 'sanctuary' of nudism bans the top less ... by mistake The natural paradise for the practice of nudism in Vera can run a serious danger of 'extinction' due to the effects of the sea and the lack of regeneration of its beach, which has caused that in the last 20 years has lost 60% of the strip Of sand of the main nudist area of the municipality, to the point that it has gone from being about 70 meters to less than 30 today. The association of neighbors Veraplayazul has given the alarm for the unstoppable advance of the sea on the houses, which came to be reached by the waves in a storm in 2013, and the undoubted repercussions that can have on tourism, which is already Is seeing affected. In fact, in recent summers bathers have already suffered the effects, as there have been crowds of nudists in the face of the loss of space on the beach. This loss makes for example that the snack bar in this area, which until recently placed two rows of umbrellas for its customers, now not only cannot install them, but the water almost reaches the columns that support it. The neighbors point out that the regression of the sand in the main nudist area of Playazo de Vera is directly related to the construction in late 2007 of two breakwaters to cover the beach area in front of the four-star naturist hotel of the town and, Although it protected that part, it had an adverse effect on the beaches located to the south of them, causing the progressive loss of sand. "The problem was that the General Directorate of Costas only undertook the first phase of the project of 'Environmental recovery of the beaches located between the Port of Garrucha and the delta of the Almanzora River', approved by the European Union in 2007, explains Cándido Millón, one of the members of the neighborhood association. And says that "today, this strip of beach is hardly 28 meters, and the worst thing is that Costas does not act to put solutions, although he says he is studying them." The mayor of Vera, the Andalusian Félix López, has also recognized the municipal concern for this issue, especially considering that the town is one of the referents of naturism in Spain and a fundamental axis of its tourism. In fact, he has reported that he, together with technicians of the City Council and representatives of the two main neighborhood associations in the area, have recently met with the top officials of the Provincial Service of Costas to claim actions. "The head of the Service, Miguel Angel Castillo, assured us that, indeed, various actions are being studied," says the mayor, although they have not
yet materialized. In fact, neighbors lament that "Costas' action is limited to encourage neighborhood associations to file complaints to the City Council when they are responsible and guilty of the situation." And they regret that instead of attacking a large jetty in the Port of Garrucha, which is what the community project quoted to protect the width and permanence of the sand of El Playazo, "Costas now proposes partial piers that will do nothing else Which will exacerbate the situation in neighboring areas, including the negative visual impact, and, of course, add dirt to a beach very punished by the spills. Meanwhile, they propose that, for the moment, a reef is enabled parallel to the beach, which in their opinion would allow to maintain the sand http://www.elmundo.es Google Translate

Researchers at Rostock University in Germany discovered that the common Guiana dolphin has a special sixth sense: It can sense electric fields with a special organ on its snout. While the ability is common in fish, the dolphins are the first placental mammal (as opposed to a marsupial mammal) found to sense electricity, which they probably use to find fish in the

The bat uses this organ to find blood meal and to bite the right part of the skin: A mouthful of hair is unappetizing to these little bloodthirsty critters. From the 9th November Shadi will be the very last dog left at the rescue centre. We urgently need to find him a home or, at least foster home. He is a lovely, gentle large dog, approx 4 years old, neutered, chipped etc. He is quite shy, but, once he knows you, he is very affectionate and playful and would be a great addition to any family. Please help and give him a chance. Call Gail on

Most people in Spain go to Midnight Mass or ‘La Misa Del Gallo’ (The Mass of the Rooster). It is called this because a rooster is supposed to have crowed the night that Jesus was born. Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before the service. The tradi“Los Sabores de Miguel” has taken over the Hotel Rural’s Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant and terrace have been completely refurbished, to include an outside undercover seating area. Have breakfast with us, toast or some freshlybaked pastry, or why not come along and have lunch you can choose between our variety of traditional and modern “tapas” or savour our “Menu del día”. To fulfil the gastronomes’ desires we also offer special dishes.

tional Spanish Christmas dinner is ‘Pavo Trufado de Navidad’ which is Turkey stuffed with truffles (the mushrooms, not the chocolate ones!) In Galicia (a region in north-west Spain, surrounded by water) the most popular meal for Christmas Eve and for Christmas Day is seafood. This can be all kinds of different seafood, from shellfish and molluscs, to lobster and small edible crabs. After the midnight service, people walk through the streets carrying torches, playing guitars and beating on tambourines and drums. One Spanish saying is ‘Esta noche es Noche-Buena, Y no Es noche de dormir’ which means ‘Tonight is the good night and it is not meant for sleeping!’ A few different languages are spoken in different regions in Spain. In Spanish Happy/Merry Christmas

is ‘Feliz Navidad’; in Catalan it’s ‘Bon Nadal’; in Galician ‘Bo Nadal’; and in Basque (or Euskara in Basque) ‘Eguberri on’. Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages. December 28th is ‘Día de los santos inocentes’ or ‘Day of the Innocent Saints’ and is very like April Fool’s Day in the UK and USA. People try to trick each other into believing silly stories and jokes. Newspapers and TV stations also run silly stories. If you trick someone, you can call them ‘Inocente, inocente’ which means ‘innocent, innocent’. 28th December is when people all over the world remember the babies that were killed on the orders of King Herod when he was trying to kill the baby Jesus. New Year’s Eve is called ‘Nochevieja’ or ‘The Old Night’ in Spain and one special tradition is that you eat 12 grapes with the 12 strokes of the clock at Midnight! Each grape represents a month of the coming year, so if you eat the twelve grapes, you are said to be lucky in the New Year. Apart from Christmas, there is another festival that is celebrated in Spain that is about the Christmas Story. It is called Epiphany and is celebrated on 6th January. In Spanish, Epiphany is called ‘Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages’: in English this means ‘The festival of the three Magic Kings’. Epiphany celebrates when the Kings or Wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Children have some presents on Christmas Day, but most are opened at Epiphany. Some children believe that the Kings bring presents to them at Epiphany. They write letters to the Kings on Boxing Day, December 26th, asking for toys and presents. And on Epiphany Eve (January 5th) they leave shoes on windowsills or balconies or under the Christmas Tree to be filled with presents. Gifts are often left by children for the Kings, a glass of Cognac for each King, a satsuma and some walnuts. Sometimes a bucket of water is left for the camels that bring the Kings! If the children have been bad, the Kings might leave pieces of coal made out of sugar in the presents!

Christmas in Huercal-Overa Some big towns and cities have Epiphany Parades with each King having a big float that is shaped like a camel. Sometimes there are also real camels in the parade. The Three Kings in the Spanish Epiphany are: Gaspar, who has brown hair and a brown beard (or no beard!) and wears a green cloak and a gold crown with green jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba. Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus. Frankincense is sometimes used in worship in Churches and showed that people worship Jesus. Melchior, who has long white hair and a white beard and wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold brought to Jesus. Gold is associated with Kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the King of Kings. Balthazar, who has black skin and a black beard (or no beard!) and wears a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt. Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus. Myrrh is a perfume that is
put on dead bodies to make them smell nice and showed that Jesus would suffer and die. Christmas in the Basque Country In the Basque country (which is a part of northern Spain and southern France), on Christmas Eve, children’s presents are delivered by a magical man called Olentzero. He’s a big, overweight man wearing a beret and smoking a pipe. He dresses like a Basque farmer. In the Catalonia province of Spain there’s a Christmas character called ‘Tió de Nadal’ (the Christmas log) or he’s sometimes known as ‘Caga tio’ (the pooping log!). It’s a small hollow log propped up on two legs with a smiling face painted on one end. From the 8th December (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) Catalan families gives the log a few morsels of food to ‘eat’ and a blanket to keep it warm. On Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, the log then ‘gives out’ small gifts! People sing a special song and hit the log with sticks to help its ‘digestion’ and the log drops

Nativity Scenes ‘Pesebres’ are also popular in Catalonia (and all throughout Spain!). Many towns also hold ‘Pastorets’ which are big plays/presentations about the Christmas story, the birth of Jesus. They have lots of music and readings from the Bible. You can find out more about Pastorets on the Pastoret Society of Catalunya’s website. A special cake called ‘Roscón’ is eaten at Epiphany. Roscón means ‘ring shape roll’. It is very doughy and is bought from a bakery on Epiphany morning. Roscón can be filled with cream or chocolate and contain a little gift. Thank you to María Níñez for her help in giving me information on Christmas in Spain! http://www.whychristmas.com/

Walking Football Week 50
Despite the much lower temperatures we`ve suffered this week it was not enough to deter our happy band from their usual Monday morning session. Not only did most of our regulars turn up but we had few newcomers as well. One of them is particularly tall. I have it on good authority that he spent most of his formative years in a Grow Bag and it seems to have worked! As ever they all started with a series of stretching exercises. I still miss the good old days when you could hear tendons snapping and bones creaking, but such is the progress they have made this no longer happens. Training over and the game began. My goodness me how closely were they matched. Both teams made valiant assaults on the opposition goals. It almost made me giddy as I tried to keep track of what was happening. After a dazzling display of speed and coordinated passing Alan slid one past the Reds goalie. Hoorah!
Soon afterwards the whistle was blown indicating the end of the first half. They all trotted, or limped, or crawled back to the bench for a wellearned suck on an orange or a few puffs on a ciggie. The colostomy barrel is away being refurbished and there no longer any need for the oxygen tanks. Refreshed after their well-earned break, the second half began and was played with as much vigour and tenacity as the first. I really thought the game would end in a draw as defenders on both sides played with such determination. Eventually in a move that was almost a mirror image of their first goal the Greens scored another remarkable goal, this time from newcomer Big Dutch. Hoorah! Well folks, provided I can remain sober, I`ll tell you about our Christmas party next week. After that we`ve got just one more training session before Christmas. Bill White

Woosnam endorses Ryder Cup captaincy
The high road often is a road less travelled, but Ian Woosnam took it in endorsing the selection of Thomas Bjorn as the next European Ryder Cup captain. “Certainly, the Welshmen could have made it difficult for the Dane as he takes over from Darren Clarke for the match in Paris in two years’ time,” James Corrigan of the Telegraph writes. “When Woosnam overlooked Bjorn for a wildcard in 2006, the latter infamously reacted by calling him ‘the most pathetic captain I’ve ever seen,’ ‘barmy’ and ‘not burdened with too many leadership qualities.’ “Woosnam was hit hard by the verbal assault and later revealed that he almost quit because of it.” Woosnam said it was “water under the bridge” and “what’s important is winning in Paris in 2018 and we all need to pull together in the old European way.” The PGA Tour Champions is a showcase for elite players in the twilight of their careers, but it also is a second-chance
tour for those who never made it to the PGA Tour. Scott Michaux of the Augusta Chronicle profiles one of the latter, Scott Parel, who was co-medallist at the recent PGA Tour Champions Q-School. “Scott Parel has been chasing his golf dreams the hard way for so long that it might take a little time to sink in that he can finally stop chasing and start living it,” Michaux writes. “Nothing has come very easy for Parel since he gave up his full-time job as a computer programmer and database administrator in 1996 to see if he could make it as a professional golfer. He first got status on what’s now called the Web. com Tour in 2003 and made only two cuts and $3,344 in 18 starts as a rookie. Twice in 2012-13 he came agonizingly close to earning his PGA Tour card, but he never played more than one time on the big tour in five different seasons.”

Open champion Henrik Stenson has won the Golf Writers Trophy for the second time The award is voted by members of Association of Golf Writers and recognises the person or persons, born or resident in Europe, to have made the year’s most outstanding contribution to golf. Having claimed his first major at the Open at Royal Troon by winning a thrilling duel with Phil Mickelson, Stenson won this award with an overwhelming majority in the voting. This was despite stiff competition from the Masters Winner Danny Willett, Olympic champion Justin Rose and Alex Noren, who collected four European Tour titles in 2016. In a stellar year, the 40 year old from Gothenburg also won the BMW International Open at Golf Club Gut Laerchenhof, Pulheim in Germany three weeks before his Open triumph. Stenson claimed eleven other top ten finishes in 2016 and secured the European Tour’s Race to Dubai for the second time. He was also the silver medalist behind Rose at the Rio Olympics. “It is always a great honour to receive the Association’s award,” said Stenson. “We talk about receiving recognition from your colleagues and your peers but in this instance it’s great to be receiving that recognition from some of the most knowledgeable media in the sport. “So it’s wonderful to be chosen as their Golfer Writers Association Trophy winner and I feel very honoured to win the award for a second time in my career,” added Stenson, who first won this award in 2013. “It’s been a fantastic season for me winning my first Major at Royal Troon, winning the BMW International in Germany, winning a Silver medal at the Rio Games and finishing first again in the Race to Dubai. “The manner I went about this year was very pleasing from start to finish. I know that the award is presented just before the 2017 Open, so it’s
going to be very nice being present at Royal Birkdale next July to relive all those great memories of what I achieved at Troon. “It’s been a great year for European golf and the European Tour and even though we didn’t bring back the Ryder Cup, I look back knowing that winning the Open helped so much in winning the Race to Dubai. “And while Danny has to be congratulated for winning the Masters, I again have to thank the Association of Golf Writers in voting me as their Golfer of the Year. “I’ll never grow tired of being weighed down with trophies!” AGW President Goran Zachrisson, commentated on Stenson’s Open triumph for Swedish television. He said: “For Hernik to win the AGW Golfer of the Year award for a second time in four years speaks volumes, not only of Henrik’s achievements on course in 2016, but for the very strong relationship he enjoys off course among those who report golf full time. “And this much-deserved award comes on the back of Henrik becoming the first Swedish-born male golfer to be honoured with the Svenska Dagbladet’s gold medal for the most significant Swedish sporting achievement of 2016.” AGW Chairman, BBC Golf Correspondent Iain Carter, said: “Not only is Henrik an outstanding golfer, but he is one of the game’s finest ambassadors. I think it is fair to say a great many of the golf writers were thrilled that he secured his long awaited first major title and this was reflected in their voting. “He won the Claret Jug in fantastic style by beating Phil Mickelson in an epic duel that left the rest of the field as nothing more than bit part players. It was a contest that will long be remembered as one of the greatest Open performances ever witnessed.”

Real Madrid arrives in Japan for Club World Cup YOKOHAMA – After a sleepless 13-hour flight from Spain, Brazilian defender Marcelo said Monday he is delighted to be in Japan and ready to help European champions Real Madrid win the Club World Cup. “I could not sleep (on the flight) but we are delighted that we are able to come to this tournament and we will get well prepared,” Marcelo said before the Spanish giants held their first training session at Yokohama’s Mitsuzawa Stadium. “I play for the national team as well and go on flights of 11 hours or more so I am used to it,” the 28-year-old said through a translator. “We have had a tight fixture schedule but this is a great tournament and we are happy to be here and our dream is to win.” Madrid was greeted at the airport by hundreds of fans shortly after 5 a.m. Monday ahead of its attempt to win its first Club World Cup since the 2014 tournament in Morocco. “This is my first time in Japan and I feel like we are welcome. I know about Japan through books and media and I have realized a childhood dream (by being here),” said Marcelo. Madrid, which has arrived on the back of a club-record 35-game winning streak, plays Mexico’s Club America in the semifinals at Nissan Stadium on Thursday after the CONCACAF region champions beat South Korea’s Asian champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 2-1 on Sunday. “I have got a group of talented players and the (good) results (we have had) are the fruits of our training,” said Real coach Zinedine Zidane. “The most important game is the game right in front of us. The only thing in my head at the moment is Thursday’s game. We will give it our all with the intention of winning,” added the French legend. “I saw Club America in their most recent game and a few cup and derby games. We will do some research about them in the next few days.” Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is with the Real squad
that is missing Welsh winger Gareth Bale, who is recovering from ankle surgery. Ronaldo’s inclusion in the squad means he will miss Monday’s FIFA award night in Paris. But despite the time difference, Marcelo said he expects Ronaldo — who won the best male player award in 2008, 2013 and 2014 and along with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is one of the favorites to win it again this year — will wait up for the result. “I don’t think there will be any contact about the result until the middle of the night here but I think he will wait up for it,” said Marcelo. “He is a fantastic player that I respect and I hope he wins it,” he said.
