Deadly New Year Fire
Two men died in the early hours of New Year ‘s Day after becoming trapped on the ground floor of a townhouse in Torreta II urbanization of Torrevieja, while the other two people inside the house, another man and a woman, suffered minor injuries due to the incident. The Three Kings Parade Arrives It certainly was a night to remember in Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa as hundreds of people lined the streets of the town to welcome their Majesties, the Kings of the Orient, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In Orihuela Costa the Three Kings and their entourage threw sweets and toys into the crowds as the colourful parade made its way to Zenia Boulevard commercial centre. Leaving the Town Hall in Playa Flamenca , the Kings paraded along

Calle Pablo Picasso and Calle Nicolás de Bussi towards Zenia Boulevard, where they shared some time with the children. Torrevieja’s three Kings arrived by boat at the Torrevieja’s port. The colourful parade consisted of floats, local bands, horsemen, exotic belly dancers, Disney characters and different animals. They headed towards Calle Ramón y Cajal, Zoa up to calle Ramón Gallud, with the parade ending in the main church square.
The Three Kings In Mojácar The Three Kings distributed more than 600 gifts to the Town’s children during their parade on January 5th 2017. Their majesties The Three Kings of the East, visited Mojácar to personally deliver their gifts to all the children of the municipality. After the official welcome from Rosmarí Cano the Mayor of Mojácar and, her fellow councillors, their Majesties set off from La Fuente to the Centro de Usos Múltiples, where they distributed the toys. This year, due to the works on the Plaza Nueva,
they were forced to leave their carriages outside the town and not take their usual route from the old town. However, The Three Kings did not want to miss their date with Mojácar’s youngsters and so, they departed from La Fuente at 17.00h on foot, along with their pages and helpers. The official entourage, including local dignitaries and Mojácar Municipal Band, which escorted The Three Kings and all the residents and visitors who wished to accompany them. Mojácar Town Hall’s Department of Fiestas also encouraged
children to join the royal party dressed up as pages and, even the Council representatives helped some children find a suitable outfit. They arrived at the Centro de Usos Multiples, where they distributed presents to the 672 children registered in Mojácar born between 2006 and 2016, special gifts that their Majesties have chosen according to the age and gender. Starting with the youngest, the children received their own gifts, one by one, in alphabetical order.
Hospital Visit
The Councillor of Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, accompanied the Three Kings last Wednesday as they made their traditional visit to the Vega Baja Hospital, where they delivered many toys to the children. The Councillor said that

Should my pet ‘kiss’ me?
Who doesn’t let their dog give them a slobbery “kiss”? Most of the time it doesn’t matter – until it does. Your dog may be part of your family, but the bacteria in its mouth are different from those in yours. As John Oxford, emeritus professor of virology and bacteriology at Queen Mary University London, recently told the Hippocratic Post, dogs spend half their life with their noses in nasty corners or hovering over dog droppings, so their muzzles are full of bacteria, viruses and germs of all sorts. Mostly, despite these bugs being unknown to our immune systems, we avoid getting sick. But there are bacteria in dogs’ (and cats’) mouths that
are zoonotic, that is, they can cause diseases in humans. They include clostridium, E coli and campylobacter, which cause gastroenteritis. Pasteurella multocida, a dog’s normal mouth bacterium, was blamed for meningitis in 42 infants in France under the age of four between 2001 and 2011. Nearly half the babies were newborn, and most were infected as a result of dogs or cats licking them. Four died. The authors of the paper suggest that contact between infants and pets should be reduced. The solution There is usually no harm from smooching your dog, but then lists a comprehensive set of risks – warning that the thin mucous
membrane lining our mouths, noses and eyes is no match for canine bacteria. There are cases of dogs spreading Haemophilus aphrophilus to humans, causing brain abscesses and inflammation of the heart and – grossest of all – tapeworm infection (Dipylidium caninum), mostly from children swallowing infected flea remnants from a dog’s mouth as a result of being licked. Finally, in a BMJ case report this year was the terrifying tale of a 70-year-old woman, found slumped in her chair, who nearly died from septicaemia. The cause? Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium from her dog after a loving lick.

A YOUNG Nigerian woman who had been forced into prostitution in Roquetas del Mar has been released by officers of the National Police. As part of an on-going action against Human Trafficking for Sexual Exploitation officers became aware of the fact that a Nigerian woman who had been smuggled into Spain had been blackmailed into acting as a prostitute by a gang of human traffickers. Officers searched three properties in the town, freeing the
woman, arresting two members and of the gang and seizing computer hard drives which will be analysed with the expectation of identifying further information on the gang’s activities. The woman in question had left Nigeria with her two brothers and settled in Morocco for a year and a half where she was reduced to begging in order to feed herself and her very young child before moving to Libya and then Italy where she settled in a refugee camp. It was whilst she was
in the camp that she was approached by a woman who offered to help her move to Spain where she was promised a good job but when she arrived in Roquetas del Mar she was told that she owed those who brought her there €25,000 and would have to turn to prostitution to repay the debt. This is one of a number of women who have been released from forced prostitution by the National Police across Spain during 2016.

Work-Related New Year’s Resolutions
1. Use the Strategy of Clarity, and be specific about what you’re asking of yourself. Resolutions like “network more” or “research new opportunities” are too vague. Put your resolution into the form of a concrete, measurable, manageable action, such as “Every month, go to at least two events with networking opportunities” or “Spend one hour every Friday afternoon

updating my time sheets and expenses.” Being specific helps you figure out what to do, and it also makes it possible to… 2. Use the Strategy of Monitoring, and monitor your habit. Monitoring is almost uncanny in its power. Research shows that simply by monitoring a behavior, we tend to do a much better job of it, whether that’s how fast we’re driving, how much we’re eating, how many cold calls we’re making, or how many instructional videos we’re watching. Keep track, and you’ll push yourself in the right direction. 3. Use the Strategy of Scheduling, and schedule time for your habit. Something like “Research that company this week” is a goal that can keep getting pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. Even if it’s important, it’s just not urgent. So schedule a specific time for research, for learning, for following up, and give it a slot on your calendar. But it’s crucial to remember that. 4. Working is one of the most dangerous forms of procrastination. When you schedule time to do certain work, you should do that work, and nothing else. No filing, no cleaning, no research, no checking emails. Do that work, or stare at the ceiling. Otherwise, you may work and work and work, and never get around to doing the very thing you set out to do.
January sale items will be available to purchase at all of these events, in addition to the full range of new lingerie collections. New You Now
And Old You is the last person you ought to trust when it comes to designing a New You. Consider the facts. For a start, Old You doesn’t currently do any of the things he or she claims will make New You happy and fulfilled. (Would you trust a personal trainer who chain-smoked through your sessions and never worked out? Exactly.) Moreover, Old You doesn’t even seem to like himself or herself that much, otherwise a makeover wouldn’t be on the agenda. Clearly, Old You has some issues. Lastly, Old You probably has a long track record of trying and failing to implement change – and yet you’re going
to trust this shifty character with your future? That’s like taking your car to a mechanic who botches the repair job almost every time. Behind the seductive lure of “New Year, New You” lies another kind of mistake, too: the idea that what we require, in order finally to change, is one last push of willpower. (Presumably, the hope is that the “January feeling” of fresh starts and clean slates will provide it.) The assumption is that you’re a bit like a heavy rock, poised on a hill above the Valley of Achievement, Productivity and Clean Eating. All you need is a concerted push to get you rolling. But the real reason that transformation is hard. Today is the first day of the rest of your week.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, speaking at the opening of an ambassadors meeting, said he wanted more chapters in the accession talks to be opened "by lifting artificial obstacles to our EU membership". A "chapter" is a specific area of negotiation, ranging on issues from human rights to economic cooperation. Cavusoglu did not specify which chapters he meant. He also said Turkey expects "visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens to be provided immediately", a reference to EU commitments on visa-free travel
Sacyr to claim up to €5.4 billion in Panama Canal cost overrun battle In an ongoing dispute over cost overruns, the Spanish-led consortium that built the Panama Canal expansion has increased its claim to a maximum of $5.67 billion (€5.39 billion), according to the Canal Authority (ACP), the public body charged with operation and management of the waterway. The Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) consortium, headed up by Spanish company Sacyr, was awarded the $3.2-billion project to
expand the century-old canal in 2009 but works were hit by major delays, and costs were far higher than originally anticipated – a fact which threatens to make a serious dent in the profits of consortium members. GUPC – which also includes Belgian, Italian and Panamanian companies – handed over the completed project involving some 11,000 workers on May 31, 2016 and operations began
Erdogan threatened in December to cancel the migrant deal, which has dramatically reduced the numbers crossing into Europe via Greece. "We've played an important role in Europe's past and will do so in the future," Cavusoglu said, adding: "A Europe without Turkey is incomplete." Relations between the EU and the NATO member state have soured in the past year over human rights and freedom of speech issues.
later that month. But the contractors are now locked in a longrunning legal dispute over cost overruns. The new GUPC figure of $5.67 billion appears in an ACP annual report published in December and represents the maximum amount the contractors will claim, although the consortium has not yet stated how large its final claim will be. According to the ACP on December 8, the GUPC group made two new requests for arbitrage with the International Court of Arbitration in Miami. As a result of these requests, the amount claimed by GUPC had risen from $3.28 billion to an upper limit of $5.67 billion, the ACP report states. Sources at Sacyr said the new maximum figure was provided because original contract conditions set a fixed time frame for making such claims after the start of canal operations. The company had made the demand so as not to lose the right to do so in future. Excess expenditure on the canal project was caused by the quality of the basalt, unexpected problems with the terrain, strikes and regulatory changes. GUPC has also claimed that the Panamanian authorities provided it with inaccurate geological studies that downplayed the real building difficulties. Before operations kicked off at the new canal, the ACP estimated that traffic would increase from 350 million tons a year to 600 million. Nearly 14,000 ships currently cross the canal annually, in a journey that takes between 18 and 20 hours. Elpais.com

DRAMA CHOICE
ONE TO WATCH
Unforgotten Thursday 12 Jan 9.00pm-10.00pm ITV Synopsis Unforgotten, written and created by Chris Lang (Undeniable, A Mother’s Son, Torn), focuses on a ‘cold’ murder case of 39 years ago, when the bones of a young man are found beneath the footings of a demolished house. An investigation begins that will unravel the lives of four people who have been waiting for this moment for nearly forty years, as they discover that the past can’t, and won’t, stay buried for ever. Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar take the lead roles as DCI Cassie Stuart and DS Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, the modern day police team who gradually unravel deep-rooted and long-forgotten secrets, which will have a dramatic impact on their investigation and the lives of four potential suspects – Father Robert Greaves (Bernard Hill), Sir ‘Frank’ Philip Cross (Trevor Eve), Lizzie Wilton (Ruth Sheen), and Eric Slater (Tom Courtenay). The slow revelation of these secrets as Cassie and Sunny hunt for the killer will alter the dynamic of the families and their loved ones forever. Episode 2 With their victim now identified, Cassie and Sunny’s search for David Walker’s killer is underway. Having pulled a selection of partial messages and numbers from the pager found with his body, the team hope that BT will be able to track down their sources in the hope that this may shed some light on his final movements. Whilst they wait, David’s wife Tessa Nixon is interviewed by Cassie and Sunny where she reveals that David suffered from depression, which had put a big strain on their marriage. As a result, when he went missing, she assumed that he has either suffered a breakdown or killed himself – she never considered that he’d been murdered. It’s her son, Jason, who is most affected by his father’s murder though, struggling to come to terms with the fact that David didn’t leave them voluntarily all those years ago. As the team reassess the initial investigation into David’s disappearance, a travel card is discovered with an address written on the back. Could these new pieces of evidence contain clues as to who killed David?
Deepwater Horizon DVD and Blu-ray release date is set for January 10, 2017 and available on Digital HD from Amazon Video and iTunes on December 20, 2016. Overview Forty miles off the coast of Louisiana, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig drills for oil in The Gulf of Mexico when disaster strikes. An explosion onboard kills several crew members, injures many others, and puts the lives of the entire crew in danger as they battle for survival. Based on the events of April, 2010, the explosion and subsequent fire result in the worst oil spill in American history, and far-reaching tragedy for American families, and put the heroism and grit of surviving crew members to the test.

MARTIN CLUNES ISLANDS OF AUSTRALIA Ep 1/3 Tuesday 10 January 7.00pm-8.25pm ITV Martin Clunes is on a quest to explore the islands of Australia in this three part documentary series for ITV. With more than 8,000 islands to choose from, Martin visits sixteen which provide a fascinating insight into the diversity, history and challenges of island life in Australia. Episode 1 Martin begins his odyssey by flying 600kilometres east over the Pacific Ocean to Lord Howe Island. It’s his first experience of Australia’s remote island communities: the pace of life is slow and the population is a steady 350. Jack Shick introduces Martin to the treasures of a place that was untouched by humans until Europeans accidentally stumbled across it in 1788, just three weeks after the first mainland colony was founded where Sydney is today. Lord Howe Island is home to several species of flora and fauna that occur nowhere else on earth. Proud locals call it “the Last Paradise”. Jack shows Martin how to shimmy up the Kentia Palm, the island’s most famous and only export, and one of the world’s most popular indoor plants

It’s understandable that teen skincare products are geared towards problem conditions such as oiliness and acne, but this default assumption doesn’t apply to all. Many teens, while probably keen to avoid or treat blackheads and spots, seek a solid maintenance p r o g r a m m e that keeps skin comfortable, not
too shiny and well prepped for whatever makeup they might choose thereafter (in my experience, those with the least need for foundation are the most desperate to wear it, however much one preaches that this is probably the loveliest their skin will ever look). In such cases, I almost always recommend Sam Farmer skincare.
Unisex, gentle, ethical and fairly priced (from £3.50), it seems to go down well with most young people, including my eldest son, who’s on the brink of teenhood. The travel pack makes a great stocking filler, and the packaging, very different from anything parents might own, is appealing to proprietorial teens.

The most important principle in skincare, however, is the same for teens as it is for those in their 80s. Cleansing twice daily with a proper balm, oil or cream cleanser, then buffing away with a clean, handhot cotton flannel, will help give you your best possible skin. No frills, just results.

Is the 350€ Dyson Supersonic really the king? came undone, with the nozzles significantly reducing the power and airflow. One tester described it as the “Lamborghini of hairdryers” because it was all show. One straight-haired tester said it left hair shiny, with fewer fly away hairs, but flat and overly dry. Verdict: fancy tech doesn’t Necessarily make for a good hairdryer.

One of the great things about Christmas in Spain for me is the importance the Spanish give to January 6th, Epiphany, or Three Kings day as opposed to Christmas Day itself, particularly in relation to the giving of presents. After all there’s no indication in the Biblical accounts that any gifts were exchanged on the actual day when Jesus was born, but of course the presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh given later by the ‘three kings’, are legendary. Suggestions as to where exactly these ‘kings’ came from include places as far-flung as Iran, India and even China, but no one really knows, and the Bible simply says that they came from the East, which isn’t very helpful. Equally unhelpful is the fact that contrary to what most of us think, the Bible doesn’t actually say there were three of them, allowing us to make that assumption simply on the basis that they brought three gifts. And worse, there’s little to suggest that they were Kings, for the Bible merely refers to them as ‘Wise Men’. But the great thing is that they came, and almost certainly travelled a very long distance to bring their presents, of huge value, to this apparently
insignificant child, who they believed was to change history. They weren’t religious men, in the normally accepted meaning of the word, and knew little or nothing of the practices or beliefs of the Jewish leaders they consulted on their arrival in Israel, but in addition to their gifts, we’re told they fell down and worshiped the child. So the joy of ‘Three Kings Day’ to me, lies not only in the giving of presents and the excited laughter of children, but in the fact that this aspect of the Christmas period, more than any other, emphasises that it’s not the religious, but the wise who find Christ and worship him, and that for some, this can require a very long journey. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes, Your Only Stop for solutions to Your computer problems. As some of you may already know, Olivers Bar has close for refurbishment for 6-8 weeks (ever?). As I wasn’t informed of these changes, or given the time to make alternate arrangements, I’m currently without a place to run my clinic! So when you need to see qualified computer diagnostician (me) you will can ring me or contact me for free through ‘Skype’ (contact name ‘saiminja’) or ‘Viber’ or ‘Whatsapp’ and let’s not forget ‘Email’. There you go 80% more chance of getting hold of me! Enough ‘Self-Promotion’, on to work! Last week I had an intriguing puzzle. A windows 7 computer wouldn’t load the drivers for a customer’s new WIFI printer. The printer was a HP and a very good one at that! The puzzle started with the knowledge that the drivers had already installed, successfully, on a laptop and the owner had no problems printing. Conclusion: the printer and drivers are fine! Obvious really! After several hours from 3 HP technicians, they concluded, as did I after only one hour, that the copy of window may have been corrupted (it can and does happen)! Having tried the standard ways to recover Windows which typically take 20 minute to an hour, and failing, all that was left was to do was a full re-install. Today I’m going to give you the steps that a professional uses in this situation. As in all good ‘How-To’ shows, here’s what you will need in order of least important to most! An External Hard drive; A copy of the replacement O(perating) S(ystem) and Patience! The process isn’t difficult, just time consuming. So let’s start. 1. Do 2 back-ups! The first is a system copy (just in case anything goes wrong – dodgy Windows CD, faulty Hard-Drive, etc.). Depending on the speed of the computer and size of the disk contents, this can take a while, hence the patience! Second stage is to back-up all the data (pictures, videos, downloads, documents, etc), this too, will take time. Thankfully, much less of it! 2. Make a list of all the software that is on the
computer. It will always be a mixture of freeware and purchased software. You will have to check that you still have the software on the CD’s as bought software might have to be bought again! 3. Put the legal copy of Windows into the CD drive and CAREFULLY follow all the instructions. Here, it can get a little awkward. Windows will offer you a dozen options and you need to know, in Your own mind, exactly what you want. A clue: You DON’T want anything that will give Microsoft ANY information whatsoever about you or your computer! Windows 8.x and 10 get very invasive about the information that they want and you have to be certain to say ‘NO’ to these questions. Assuming that Windows has been installed correctly and you are happy that Microsoft know nothing about you, You will have to wait (patience IS a virtue) until the computer restarts a number of times. Eventually, you will have a basic Windows OS. 4. Now need the motherboard drivers CD that comes with your computer. If you have this, put it into the CD drive and install the system, video, LAN and audio drivers. At this point you should have a complete, working, all-singing and dancing computer again. 5. This is optional but I do it to all my computers and offer it (at a small additional charge) to You, the customer. I re-partition the Hard Drive and create a ‘Factory Restart’ (System Backup) of the working system and a way to recover from any major problems. THIS IS OPTIONAL! 6. Re-install all the paid for software. Find, download and install all the freeware. Finally return all your personal information (picture, videos, music, documents, anything else I’ve missed). Restart your computer! Now make a cuppa, pat yourself on the back and prepare the bragging rights for next time you’re in the pub! To arrange an appointment for a time or place use the Phone number or Email address below, Skype (Look for the name “saiminja”), Viber or Whatsapp for free advice concerning your computer.

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT Where to buy IN SPAIN
The lure of sun, sea and sand is very strong, but properties near the sea are generally more expensive than those inland, and perhaps just 20 minutes’ drive away from the coast you will find houses or apartments which are much better value and have more outside space. These could be in a small village or town, or on an urbanisation, built to cater for locals and foreigners alike. Seaside complexes or urbanisations carry community charges, as do apartment blocks, so you should look into the terms and costs of these charges carefully before you commit to buying a property. All along the coast, you will find villas of different styles and sizes. In North East Spain, properties with a sea view are still expensive, despite the fall in property prices. Properties here tend to be second homes, and are used largely during the summer months when people from the big cities such as Barcelona, London, Paris, and so on, escape to their idyll be the sea. Apartments, which are closed for up to 5 months of the year are aired and thrown open to the wind and the sun most weekends around Easter time, and are fully occupied as summer approaches. These properties are often let out to tourists to help pay the maintenance costs or mortgage. You should also be aware that owners
If you are retired and moving to Spain, you should think about what facilities you need close to your property - it’s all very well to buy a villa on a cliff with a wonderful view, but it is likely that such a property will have numerous steps and will be some distance from the nearest shop - so you will have to go out by car every time you need something. The larger coastal resorts stay open 12 months of the year. Many are attracted to the pretty inland towns and villages, surrounded by vineyards and steeped in history. Again, there are urbanisations in the country areas, but also typical village houses, either of natural stone, or as in Andalucia, painted white. Village properties are cheaper than in the big towns (unless it is a village which particularly attracts tourists such as Mijas (Andalucia) or Pals (Catalunya)), but they are more likely to need some (if not total) renovation, these properties are nevertheless popular, especially when everything is within walking distance.

TIPS FOR BUYING AN OVERSEAS PROPERTY
Spain’s pleasant, healthy climate and wide selection of properties make it the most popular destination for an overseas property. Choose from developed plots, farmhouses and village locations, through to villas, townhouses and new apartment developments. Fincas A finca is a plot of land or an estate outside of or in-between towns and villages. Properties advertised as fincas can run from tumbledown farmhouses to lavish modern villas. An advantage is that fincas generally come with a substantial amount of land, which may include olive groves and fruit

orchards. Residency If you wish to spend more than six months in Spain you need to apply for a ‘residencia’ to become a resident. Being a resident doesn’t restrict movements in any way and it has many advantages, such as lower taxes. If you don’t become a resident you must appoint a fiscal representative. The fiscal representative It’s highly advisable for any person who has a property in Spain but doesn’t live there all the time to nominate a fiscal representative. This is a person to whom the tax authorities can send all correspondence relating to your affairs in Spain,

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com ALZHEIMER AND THE LAW Proactive planning is the key. Put things in place as quickly as possible. Question: My wife has just recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer decease. It is at an early stage, but I would like to know if there is anything we should be doing from a legal point of view while she is still of able mind. (The original question was much longer with a lot more detail and involving other matters also. With the client’s permission we have prepared this abbreviated version.) Answer: We would recommend that your wife issues you with a Spanish enduring power of attorney. (This is quick, easy and even though it could vary depending on the solicitor, it will not cost you more than 400euro). We have a booklet on the different types of powers of attorney you can sign in these circumstances. Simply request it by e-mail and we will post or e-mail it to you free of charge. Unlike in the UK this document can only be issued while your wife understands what she is doing. If it was required later on, a much more complicated procedure would be required using the local courts (this is an expensive and long procedure). The power of attorney is necessary because if it is not signed, the moment she is no longer of able mind you will not be able to handle her accounts, sell
your jointly-owned property etc. The one thing she cannot issue you with power of attorney for is for signing a new will, which is why we would recommend that you take a good look at her will to make sure that it is correct, as she will not be able to modify it in any way the moments she no longer understands what she is doing. Make sure that it complies with the New Directive 650/2012, that the beneficiaries are those she wishes, that you are comfortable with the named executor etc. etc. Remember when she is no longer of able mind the will cannot be changed under any circumstance. I would look at your own will also, as if you have left everything to your wife you may wish to change this in favor of perhaps one of your children. In the UK I would also recommend that you put things in motion to obtain a full enduring power of attorney. The forms can be downloaded from the internet and you can start things off by post. In the UK this can also be done after she is no longer of able mind, but there is no harm in doing it beforehand. We would strongly recommend a visit to your solicitor to discuss your situation in particular and to address at least the matters explained above. An honest and upfront meeting of the family with a solicitor at an early stage of the illness is a very good idea. Michael Davies. Abogado.

BUYING A BANK REPOSSESSION?
Repossessed and distressed properties in Spain. Go direct to the Spanish banks for a list of available properties. Spanish Banks offer a large choice of distressed and repossessed properties (REO) all over Spain. More than 30.000 Bank Owned Properties Spanish houses for Sale. Buy direct from the bank without any extra costs, discounts up to 60%. For property that has been repossessed by the banks, for private dwellings this is generally because of default of repayments by the owner and the bank has no option but to repossess, you are
buying directly from the bank as the bank now own the said property. There are also cases where a developer has gone bust and the bank has stepped in to finish the project and sell the properties, whatever the case the bank have a vested interest in the properties shown on this website. Buyer Beware, you may see properties advertised on some website where they offer a 110% mortgage to cover the buying costs as well as the property purchase. Well for a start it is not possible to legally finance the buying costs of any property in Spain so this is more than likely a private arrangement, obviously this could have implications that you don’t want somewhere down the line so at least be aware of this. Also properties which qualify for a 100% mortgage generally have a greater purchase price. Hard & Fast Rules For Buyers. To be able to buy a repossession you must
be in a position to act fast, the very nature of bank repossessed properties is that they are priced to sell quickly so it’s no good whatsoever looking for a property if you intend to come to Spain in the coming months, what is available today probably will not be tomorrow! Do not set your heart on one particular property as it could be gone by the time you get there, instead choose to view more than one property in your chosen area. Mortgages. If you require financing to purchase the property you will also complete a mortgage application form, your property advisor will advise you which documents you’ll need to get approved for a mortgage. When everything is approved you will complete the compraventa (a private purchase contract) whereupon 10% of the agreed purchase price will be made. It’s a simple and safe process buying a repossessed property directly from the bank.
Astounding Facts You Didn't Know About Madrid
Often esteemed less mentionable than flamboyant Barcelona, Madrid keeps its secrets hidden for those who do not deliberately look for them. Discover some of the amazing facts that will completely change your image of the captivating capital of Spain! Madrid is the third biggest city in the European Union Right after the spectacular demographics of London, home to around 8.5 million people, and the 3.6 million inhabitants of Berlin, Madrid comes in third in terms of peaking population numbers of the European Union. In 2015, an estimate of 3.1 million people were living in the buzzing capital of Spain – virtually the entire population of Armenia! Counting in its massive metropolitan area, Madrid would also attain the bronze medal in the category ‘Greatest Metropolitan Area of the EU,’ its vast district of 5,335 square meters currently housing a baffling 6.2 million people.
Madrid is not only a city, but a ‘state’ Often escaping notice is the fact that ‘Madrid’ is not only the name of the world-famous capital, but also one of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain. Once, these prestigious provinces were established to divide the Spanish territory into its proud historical regions in order to facilitate a centralized government. Having no true administrative power when they were classified in 1833, the communities today can be seen as
politically autonomous provinces or federal states of Spain.
Madrid lies at around 700 meters of altitude There might be palm trees in Madrid, but fact is that the voluptuous city of Madrid lies at an astounding 667 meters above sea-level, many places in the north even surpassing the 700 meters mark! Consequently, the only humid breezes you might sense would have to be the gusts of air escaping the Metro shaft. The climate is instead defined by mountainous winds and a dry and clear air, enchanting with clear autumn days as well as blazing summers. This means, however, that in winter temperatures should not be underestimated, as they can easily drop below the frosty minus-celsius mark.

Madrid is home to an astonishing amount of students. Not surprisingly, this is due to the fact that Madrid is one of the unsurpassed hot-spots of university education in Europe. Various of its many universities and business schools are counted as being some of the oldest and most prestigious learning facilities worldwide. The economical Masters program of the University Charles III, for example, is ranked on the list of the ‘global top-50,’ whereas the founding of the The Coat of Arms of Universidad Complutense, for instance, Madrid – a Bear and a dates back as early as the year 1293.
Tree?
Madrid was founded around the year 860 A.C. Standing broad and clear in the
middle of Puerta del Sol, it can be seen: the statue of a cuddly bear reaching up to the branches of a tree. These two emblematic figures represent the official Coat of Arms of Madrid. Apparently, the bear, also adorned with the 7 stars of the zodiac sign Ursa-Mayor (the Great Bear), had represented the council of Madrid since the year 1212. The tree was added ten years later as the symbol of a treaty, which settled the ongoing dispute between the clergymen and the

When the Romans walked the Spanish lands 200 years B.C., no signs of Madrid were to be found. For more than a 1100 years the mountains of the Castilian Central Plateau were only scarcely inhabited, until Muhammad I, ruler of the Arabic reign of Córdoba, chose to build a small castle in the region in the late 9th century. On a majestic hill with an excellent surveillance view over the valley and in convenient proximity to the Manzanares river, this little citadel developed into a fortress with rapidly
growing importance. Thus, the origins of the Madrid we know today lie in the village surrounding this ancient Arabicthen-Spanish military defence-post in the Castilian mountains.
Madrid was – and is – a European Cultural Capital When Madrid became the European Capital of Culture in 1992, few people who have actually been to the city will have been surprised, for the city offers a stunning variety of cultural venues and activities in all shapes and sizes. Undoubtedly, the city might first win you over with its overwhelming museums like the world-famous Prado, museum of 12th-19th century European and Spanish art, or the Reina Sofía Museum of Modern Art. However, it might also enthral on another level, for example through the numerous philosophical book clubs or the alternative meeting places for social and cultural debates.
Madrid became the capital of Spain in the 16th century Until the reign of Felipe II from the royal house of Austria, the seat of the Spanish monarchy had not been permanently settled. Because of the central geographical position of Madrid and the abundance of water and game in its surroundings, it seemed to him the worthiest and most useful place in which to settle his royal affairs. https://theculturetrip.com

Samsung execs quizzed over government corruption scandal
Two senior Samsung executives have been questioned as part of the corruption probe surrounding South Korea’s impeached president, Park Geun-hye. The firm is accused of giving large donations to non-profit foundations operated by Choi Soonsil, a close confidante of Ms Park. The donations were allegedly given in exchange for political support of a controversial merger. Ms Choi has been charged with coercion and attempted fraud. According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, Choi Gee-sung, a Samsung vice chairman, and Chang Choong-ki, a president at the group, were being interviewed on Monday by special prosecutors about the corruption allegations. It was reported the pair were being treated as witnesses, rather than being suspected of any
wrongdoing. The claims circle around a merger between the electronics giant’s construction arm, Samsung C&T, and an affiliate firm, Cheil Industries. The deal went through despite significant opposition from shareholders, who said it would hurt minority shareholders while benefiting the family of Samsung’s group owner Lee Kun-hee. South Korea’s National Pension Service (NPS), which owns stakes in both companies, sealed the deal by voting in favour of it and the head of the NPS has since been arrested. But prosecutors also allege that Samsung gave €2.8m euros ($3.1m; £2.5m) to a company coowned by Ms Choi and her daughter, in return for Ms Park’s support for the deal. At the centre of the probe is Choi Soon-sil, a close confidante of Park Geun-hye In a parliamentary session last month, senior

executives of Samsung admitted the firm gave money to help the equestrian career of Ms Choi’s daughter, Chung Yoo-ra. Samsung’s de-facto head, Lee Jae-yong confirmed that the company had paid for a horse for Ms Chung - though to be worth around $850,000 - saying he regretted the move. Powers stripped A total of eight firms have so far admitted donating funds linked to President Park Geunhye, but deny seeking favours. Politicians voted on 9 December to impeach President Park - a decision South Korea’s constitutional court has six months to uphold or overturn. Until then she remains formally president but stripped of her powers, which are handed to the prime minister, a presidential appointee. Ms Park denies wrongdoing but has apologised for the way she managed her relationship with Ms Choi, who also denies committing criminal offences.

viewpoint 25 Jos & Barbara’s Jolly Big Adventure pt 3 Alqueria in Song and Dance
John MacDonald (El Sordo) www.caratacus.eu
www.soltimes.com
Loco Paco put down his copy of ‘Alqueria Hoy’, Alqueria’s daily newspaper and walked to the window. He had been reading about the crisis in the Remitroot Industry and its fiscal implications. He wondered why they didn’t save money by cancelling the New Year and simply rerunning the old one. It made sense to Paco but then many things made sense to him that didn’t to others. While in reality nothing really made sense at all, why should it, there is no logic or rhythm in life. Paco’s view of reality is just as valid as anyone else’s.
As he looked through his window at the dawn of what should be a new year he wondered if he should wake Pepa but as he didn’t want to die he decided against it. Last night they had celebrated as survivors and today they would remember those who didn’t make it into 2017, just to drink a simple toast to those who are no longer. Paco’s mind then wondered to the new Saharan Dung Beetle racing season and whether Bengy would perform up to expectations. He had
been in intensive training lately and was showing promise even though he was a little slow out of the stalls.
The racing season brought Paco happiness as did Loca Pepa, she understood him, most didn’t. Opinions were divided in Alqueria over his sanity but Paco knew what made him happy, something most ‘sane’ people couldn’t grasp. He understood that happiness wasn’t a right, it wasn’t something he was entitled to, if he could snatch the occasional ‘day trip to paradise’ he would be happy. Paco’s family were a mystery to everyone including Paco. He didn’t know who they are or where they could be, they certainly aren’t in the Pueblo. He didn’t even know which continent he sprung from. He didn’t even mind being called ‘Loco Paco’ it was a better epithet than some and gave people advance warning as to his mental state which made things easier during first encounters. It also gave him a freedom of action not open to ‘saner’ people who had to conform to an artificial norm. Living in Alqueria brought Paco comfort and security as did living with Pepa, both were familiar to him, both allowed him leeway, the leeway a mind like his needed. Perhaps Alqueria is nothing but one large institution for the mentally challenged but the question is, who has the problem and who is sane?
We are going to get squashed and it’s going to hurt, I thought as we sat defenceless inside Henry, who was stuck sideways on in a rambla with the headlights of the Patrulla’s enormous 4X4 hurtling towards the driver’s door. Miraculously the 4X4 stopped just short of impact and spilled its load of rescuers out into the rainy dark. Barbara and I exited Henry, cleared out of the field of combat and left it all to the experts. They pushed, but Henry was not to be moved. He simply settled more firmly into the grit. Another vehicle from the Policía Local arrived, but not even the combined strength of 2 different arms of the Law in the form of 4 fit young men could unstick him by even one inch. There was nothing for it but to tow him out. Gone are the days when you tied a rope round the front axle and pulled – Henry has a bespoke Thingummy, which goes into a covered recess under his right eye – even when being towed he likes to maintain a certain gravitas! However, the main problem was that Henry was sideways on. To get a towrope on him one of the rescue vehicles had to get past him. He was jammed between a near vertical cliff at the back and a 2 foot soft shingle bank at the front. The Patrulla tried to surmount the bank and nearly got stuck. The Policía’s vehicle tried, and got even more nearly stuck. We now had 3 vehicles up to their axles in grit. Who rescues the rescuers? I wondered. But a combination of persistence and cunning prevailed – forwards and backwards, not quite enough
By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com
to get stuck, but a little further each time, until they had made a driveable groove in the grit. Henry was duly hitched up, and had no option but to yield to the greater strength of the Patrulla’s huge vehicle and unstick himself. ‘You follow behind me.’ Rafael the Head Honcho commanded me, indicating the now fully mobile Henry. ‘No, Julián will drive. I’ve lost my confidence.’ I said, pointing to the Second-in- Command Honcho, who seemed quite keen on the idea. Barbara and I passengered in Rafael’s huge 4X4 and hurtled back to Albox at Rally Cross speed, with Julián pushing Henry along behind us at way beyond his comfort zone and with no regard for his dignity. I think to the Patrulla and the Policíait was all a jolly jape, rescuing 2 lost and stuck English ladies – but not once did they suggest by word or action that it could have been My Own Silly Fault! Thank you, guys!

Removing cactus spines?
Weekly Guide: Growing Tomatoes from seeds
Prepare the pots: Fill the small pots close to the top with the seed-starting soil or potting soil. Pat the soil down a little so that it is not too loose, but isn’t packed tightly. Have the kids poke a hole about 1/4” deep in each of the containers. To make it easy for them, show them a spot on their fingers that should not go below the dirt. Depending on their age and finger size, it could be the end of the fingernail (at the cuticle) or perhaps at the first finger joint. This way they don’t have to guess at the depth. Plant the seeds Make sure the seeds aren’t sticking together and then have the kids put two or three seeds in each hole. Some seeds may not germinate, so it helps to have more than one seed in each pot. Cover the seeds with about 1/4” of soil. To help the kids know how much soil to use, do the first one yourself (or do it ahead of time). Use a measuring spoon and then determine how many times the spoon must be filled for the seeds to be covered by 1/4” of soil. That way you can tell the kids to put X number of spoonfuls of soil in the pots. Then pat the soil.
Dream plant for spanish gardens
From time to time one comes across, out of the blue, a dream plant that solves a critical problem for a wide range of gardens at an economic price. The versatile and drought resistant plant Vetiver which appears to have originated from India. It was unbelievable but I had not heard of or seen the plant before. Infact inspite of worldwide use for many years it has only been available in Spain for around five years. Although the initial cuttings/slips are small they create good sized
Many gardeners like perennial flowering plants because they return year after year. However, that doesn’t mean that you can plant them once and forget about them. Perennials require regular maintenance to look and perform their best. Staking, pruning, deadheading, dividing and pest control are a few of the gardening chores you can expect to enjoy when growing perennials. To get the most bang from your buck, be sure to include some long flowering and repeat flowering perennial flowers in your garden design. Large blocks of colour add impact to a garden and the best way to achieve that is with long blooming perennials. There are many different samples on the market, so do take your time in choosing the right one for you.
Top Tips Put in more irrigaton heads than you think you need. When using in ground valves use a big valve box. This will make installation and service much easier. Rake wood chips or gravel over it to hide it. Two foot by three foot is a nice size for four to six valves.
plants within three months and eventually create 1.5 metree high clumps with vertical roots upto three metres in length. I suspect that there will be a good number of readers with an interest in these versatile, inexpensive and easy to care for plants. Many gardens look a little battered after recent rains and strong winds although many are full of flowers and late tomatoes, peppers and aubergines plus numerous new salad vegetables are now ready for light harvesting, before the anticipated January and February winter cut back.

Cactus spines are painful, and really difficult to remove from your skin. Although this paper is from the mid-eighties, the results are still remarkably useful. We research and compare several methods for removing cactus spines–and it’s a good thing, too, because several methods actually make the problem worse! The removal of very fine cactus spines from the skin is particularly distressing for the patient. We describe two typical patients and a study in experimental animals comparing the effectiveness of several previously described methods for removal. The most effective method involved using tweezers to remove clumps of spines followed by a thin layer of glue covered with gauze, which was allowed to dry and then peeled off to remove individual spines. Attempts to use adhesive tape or a thin layer of a commercial facial mask to aid in removal of the spines produced more retention and inflammation three days after removal than no treatment.

But will it be smoked mackerel or duck? Contemporary Britain is weirdly ambivalent about paté. It is a restaurant staple and a Christmas favourite, yet the subject of this month’s How To Eat has a distinct whiff of naff 1970s dinner parties about it. It is unfashionably rich and heavy, a hangover from a time when we blindly mimicked supposedly sophisticated French cuisine. From ethereally smooth parfaits to horny-handed slabs of minced offal, paté is seen as a complex technical challenge best left to chefs and, somehow, at the same time, a faintly suspect way of using up cheap meat. In 2009, a team of UK scientists published a research paper that naysayers will appreciate: “Can people distinguish paté from dog food?” This (literally paste in French) is a food that is simultaneously loved and loathed, and one which stopped being cool circa 1983. Never let it be said that How To Eat is a slave to the latest trends as we explore, from smoked kipper to chicken liver, how best to eat paté.

Top Spanish foods
Spanish food is often recognised as one of the top cuisines in the world, and some traditional Spanish dishes and recipes date hundreds of years.
SERVED WITH BREAD OR CRACKERS? WHICH IS BEST?
Gazpacho or salmorejo
This zesty, chilled tomato soup has claimed space in supermarkets and on menus around the world, but few compare to refreshing Spanish gazpacho made with full-flavoured Spanish tomatoes. Usually eaten as an appetizer – this thick soup is made from blending a whole heap of fresh tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, garlic, onions, vinegar and herbs. It’s the perfect Spanish food for summer, as well as a low calorie and healthy dish. Salmorejo is a similar Andalucian version combining pureed bread, tomatoes, garlic and vinegar – also served cold – and sometimes varied with a bit of ham or egg
slices on top. Pisto – Spanish ratatouille This vegetarian top Spanish dish is for all ages, eaten in Spain as a tapa, appetiser, a side dish to meats, or even as a meal with a fried egg on top or chorizo. It’s a Spanish ratatouille of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, onions, garlic, and of course, olive oil. The palatable competition of intense roasted flavours makes this a tasty recipe to try at home. You can find it in restaurants around Spain, and especially in the towns across the plains of La Mancha, south of Madrid. Paella This rice-based dish is well known internationally, although in Valencia you
will find many authentic variations that equally vie for attention. Some consider this a national dish of Spain, but many consider it a Valencia dish, from where it originated and you can typically find the best paella. The most traditional Valencian paella is a mixture of chicken or rabbit, white and green beans and other vegetables, but seafood is also common, where you can find an array of seafood surprises among the flavoursome rice, such as calamari, mussels, clams, prawns, scampi or fish, depending on the type you order. For the adventurous, a black rice stained by octopus ink is a must try.

GERMANY’S INSISTENCE ON FISCAL DISCIPLINE MAY LEAD TO EU BREAK-UP
Germany’s Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel has warned that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s increasing pressure on the European Union countries to maintain their fiscal discipline could widen divisions in the EU and lead to its imminent collapse.
“I once asked the chancellor, what would be more costly for Germany: for France to be allowed to have half a percentage point more deficit, or for Marine Le Pen to become president?” Gabriel said in an interview published on Saturday in Der Spiegel magazine, adding, “Until today, she still owes me an answer.” Gabriel, the head of Germany’s Social Democrats Party (SPD) and a partner to Merkel’s conservatives in her ruling grand coalition, said Germany’s insistence on austerity in the euro zone has left Europe more divided than ever, putting the 28-member bloc at the risk of a real break-up. “But I also know about the state of the EU. It is no longer unthinkable that it breaks apart,” he said,

U2 will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its classic album, The Joshua Tree, with a run of North American and European stadium dates. The dates include a stop at Bonnaroo, which will mark the first time the band has headlined a festival in the U.S.
Each show will include a performance of the 1987 album, which included such hits as “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” in its entirety. “Recently I listened back to The Joshua Tree for the first time in nearly 30 years. It’s quite an opera,” said Bono in a statement. “A lot of emotions which feel strangely current: love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarisation… all the greats. I’ve sung some of these songs a lot… but never all of them. I’m up for it, if our audience is as excited as we are. It’s gonna be a great night.” Tickets for the North American shows go on sale Jan. 17.

to the aid of a distressed koala found with its head stuck underneath a fence and unable to move. Diluz Abbasov, 37, said her mother discovered the koala in the backyard of their Athelstone home about 10am on Thursday. ‘Mum said she thought he was dead when she found him, but then he started moving,’ Ms Abbasov said. ‘He’s a fighter.’ Admitting the pair did not know what to do, Ms Abbasov said she relied on instinct and tried to free the koala by pushing it through the fence. ‘I tried to help it but I didn’t have any gloves, so I got a towel and put it over its head and tried to push it through the gate, but it’s claws were still out so I thought it was too dangerous,’ she told Nine News. That was when Ms Abbasov decided to phone

And while the water kept the Australian marsupial cool, Ms Abbasov said it also prompted the koala to wiggle its way to freedom. ‘Once I started spraying the water, he got his paw up and was trying to wipe it off his face. Then he started wiggling more and finally was freed,’ she said. Soon enough, the koala was free from its restraints, making its way across the road and on its

Shadi is still home alone at the Dog House and, it is with regret, we have to finally close the gate there at the end of January. This means we desperately need to find a home for Shadi, even a foster home; He needs a home where, perhaps he is the only dog and can have lots of love and attention.

Riviera Maya
TIME Travel
The Promenade des Anglais or English Promenade in Nice runs along the beachfront of the Bay of Angels and is one of the most important parts of the city. The promenade runs from the airport in the west to Old Nice and the Quai des Etats Unis in the east. Along the length of the promenade are several points of interest starting with the Cours Selaya market and Old Nice. Place Massena is along the promenade and is one of the busiest and historic squares in the city.
The Riviera Maya extends along the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Morelos to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Once home to small fishing villages, the Riviera Maya coastline has since
been developed into a modern tourist corridor offering the very best of high-end luxury resorts, fine dining, nightlife, spa retreats, shopping and golf in Mexico. An ideal vacation destination, the Riviera Maya is home to some of the most stunningly beautiful beaches in

Sydney
Sydney Australia is one of the world’s most loved cities and it has a lively and vibrant buzz that makes it the ultimate destination throughout the year. There are always plenty of things to do in Sydney whether it’s summer, winter, or spring, there’s worldclass dining, and entertainment.
Oceania features two classes of ships in its fleet. The newest vessels, Marina and Riviera, which each carry 1,258 passengers, were purpose-designed and built for the line. Its original trio of R-class vessels -- 684-passenger Regatta, Insignia and Nautica -- was acquired when Oceania launched back in 2003. (All three underwent a massive refurbishment in 2014). The big differences between the two are that more amenities -- such as extra restaurants, a Wine Spectator La Reserve Wine Bar, and the Bon Appetit Culinary Center -- are only available on the newer, larger ships. Although they’re smaller Regatta, Insignia and Nautica have a cosier ambience. By virtue of the ships’ sizes, it’s not difficult to find yourself oriented by the first day at sea. These ships bear a high ratio of standard balcony cabins. Service is enthusiastic and gracious, courtesy of the well-trained staff.
Amazing Adventures Oceania Cruises Fleet
At 30,277 tons and with a 684-passenger occupancy, Regatta, Insignia and Nautica fall firmly in the mid-size range but offer the wide variety of amenities and options usually found on deluxe-priced lines. Also in the mid-size range are 65,000-ton, 1,252-passenger Marina, which debuted in February 2011, and sibling Riviera, which launched a year later.

The last defeat suffered by current La Liga leaders was in
