Wine is either white, rosé or red, but never blue. A business venture by five Basque entrepreneurs has run afoul of Spain’s winemaking industry. A complaint filed by the sector’s biggest producers has resulted in a prohibition against commercializing its blue-colored drink Gik Live as a wine. The people behind the eye-catching product say that the complaint has put sales on hold for three months while forcing them to fire two workers. Gïk, a startup based in the Basque town of Portugalete that aimed to “revolutionize a traditional industry with the world’s first blue wine,” has been forced to rethink its business strategy in the wake of the industry protest. Company officials said that from now on, they will no longer be able to market their product as a blue wine, even though it is made exclusively with wine grapes (a mixture of red and white varieties) and uses organic pigments to create the blue hue. It’s unfair, because Gïk is 100% grape. It represents something new that the sector does not want to live with. Instead, the new label will not show the word wine at all, and the product will be classified under “other alcoholic beverages.” “We’ve had to change the makeup to 99% wine and 1% grape juice in order to make it adapt to existing legislation,” said a Gïk spokesman. “It’s unfair, because Gïk is 100% grape. It represents something new that the sector does not want to live

The product received wide media coverage when it first came out in November, with UK broadcaster the BBC describing it as a “cross between a wine, a wine cooler and a cocktail mixer, with a mellow, sweet, slightly syrupy mouthfeel.” There is another similar case in Spain. Viñedos Amaya, a winemaker from El Bierzo with its own vineyards, was told by a court that its colored “technowine” cannot be marketed as wine, regional daily El Diario de León reported. Instead, the company now markets a Rainbow Drink “made with wine and in any color you wish.” But all the attention also had its side effects. Two inspectors showed up at the company’s facilities in

Schneiderlin In £22m Move See Inside early August to analyze the characteristics of Gïk Live, which was then being marketed as a blue wine. The company said it has sold over 90,000 bottles in the domestic market. Gïk Blue has an alcohol content of 11,5 degrees, and contains sweeteners. It pairs well “with sushi, guacamole and nachos, tzatziki, pasta carbonara and smoked salmon,” say its makers. They also stress that the drink is regulated by the European Food Safety Authority and has all the necessary approvals. But none of this was enough for Spain’s wine producers, who filed a complaint stating that “the term ‘blue wine’ is not included in the 17 categories of wine products” listed in 2013 industry regulations. The company has also been slapped with a fine that it declines to disclose. López said that “some people defend tradition and the good name of their favorite wines, but we don’t feel that we are hurting anybody. We’re just trying to bring this world closer to young people like ourselves. There should be room for everyone.” Gïk officials also say that the Spanish Conference of Wine Regulatory Councils establishes that “diversity is one of the pillars of Spain’s wines.” Now, the company has launched a petition on Change.org in a bid to have their product categorized as wine and to have “a fair spot in the industry.” elpais.com

Facebook to roll out fake news tools in Germany Facebook is introducing new tools in Germany to help combat the spread of fabricated news stories. The world’s largest social network said it would enable German users to flag potentially false stories. The stories will then be passed to third-party fact-checkers and if found to be unreliable, will be marked in users’ news feeds as “disputed”. It is the first major rollout of the fake news features announced by Facebook in December. “Last month we announced measures to tackle the challenge of fake news on Facebook,” the company said on Sunday in a German-language statement. “We will put these updates in place in Germany in the coming weeks.” Facebook has been widely criticised after some users complained that fake news had influenced the US presidential election. German government officials have expressed concern that misinformation on the internet could influence the country’s
parliamentary election this year. Last week, the social news site Buzzfeed found Facebook pages were publishing false stories about German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is seeking re-election. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas has also repeatedly warned about fake news on Facebook, and
fake stories to Correctiv, a German non-profit body of investigative journalists, to check the facts.
NEWS Warship Deal
If they find a story to be false, it will be marked on Facebook as “disputed” and will appear lower in users’ news feeds. Facebook is already working with other fact-checkers in the US to verify news on its platform. The fact-checkers must sign up to a code of principles to take part. There are currently 43 signatories, including news organisations in several different countries.
called on the firm to respect the country’s defamation laws, which are stricter than in the US. Under the new measures, users in Germany will be able to select “It’s a fake news story” as an option when reporting another user’s post. They can then mark the post as fake news, let the other user know they think it is fake, or block that user. Facebook will send potentially

Stage Door Panto Review
When the leading woman is played by a man with every ‘asset’ wildly exaggerated! And the ‘Principle Boy’ is played by a young woman as pretty as a picture. When the baddies are loud and ugly and the goodies are all sweetness and light; when the audience get to participate with hisses , boos, cheers and time honoured sayings known off by heart and when a happy ending is guaranteed then you know that you have stumbled upon that quintessentially British genre of Theatre the PANTOMIME. The IndaloPlayer’s offering of
‘Robinson Crusoe’. Directed by Ruth Johnson Wood and Sue Mehmet, fitted the bill perfectly. Colourful, loud and brash ( and not just the dame , played outrageously by Bill White), It had every essential Pantomime ingredient in spades. Victoria Noble did a splendid job as Robinson in her first adventure treading the boards. Eddie Goodall really is the archetypal Pirate: and his ‘Mate’ ,most ably played by Sandra Moorhouse, maintained a high level of energy throughout. Freddie Draycott as Ollie Octopus never missed a cue and all the children involved performed splendidly. Many
of the cast had little or no previous experience. The Costumes and sets are terrifically colourful and eccentric in equal measure. There are enough chances for audience participation to keep everyone happy and the cast give their all to the songs, dances and characterisation. A tremendous effort by everyone involved. You will leave the theatre with a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart, knowing that you have taken part in a wonderfully innocent and joyful experience. And for a very brief time
ALMERIA’S TOURISM REPRESENTATIVE FOR ANDALUCIA MEETS LEVANTE MAYORS AND ENTREPRENEURS IN MOJÁCAR
After meeting with Rosmari Cano, the Mayor of Mojácar, along with the town’s Councillor for Tourism, Emmanuel Agüero, Alfredo Valdivia, the Delegate for Tourism, presented the Andalucian Government’s new plans for the sector to the business people and Mayors of the Levante Almeriense region. The event, which was held at Mojácar’s Hotel Marina Playa, aroused a lot of interest with numerous local business representatives and members of the Levante Almeriense Region Administration in attendance. Alfredo Valdivia, reiterated the incentives and
subsidies already in place, as well as presenting the future initiatives (some of which are already in their preliminary stages) that the Regional Government Tourism Ministry will work on during 2017. The meeting dealt with several topics of interest to Mojácar and the local area, such as investments in; promotions and installations, increasing sports tourism, improvements to beaches, computerisation and, the improvement of accessibility to municipalities. For all these projects, the necessity of collaboration and talks between the Local Administrations in Tourism
was stressed. The Minister emphasized the importance of continuing to fight the seasonality of the tourism sector which is one of the priorities of the Ministry. He also presented the favourable data obtained at the close of last season, which was the region’s best ever, statistically speaking. During the month of November 2016 for example, tourism in the province of Almeria increased by 45% over the previous year. He also reiterated the Regional Government’s commitment to the Levante Almeriense area, taking as an example the promotional work at the ITB Fair in Berlin. Also there are the tools available to help those in small, medium enterprises (Pymes) and entrepreneurs in general, in addition to the many subsidies, training courses and technical advice on offer from the Andalucía Lab organisation, among others.

A Spanish OAP went on a TV show looking for love - and ended up on the receiving end of an hilarious practical joke when she fell asleep live on air. The presenter turned the lights off and invited the studio audience to leave after the woman nodded off. The pensioner was hoping to find a partner to accompany her in her old age by going on the popular afternoon programme. The presenter’s humour has won him an army of fans in Andalucia where he presents his regional show. ‘And if after the meal you do a Zumba class then you end up like Eloisa sleeping peacefully under an almond tree,’ he quipped.
Pepe Carvalho is back
More than 13 years after the demise of his creator, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Spain’s most famous fictional detective is to rise again to walk the mean streets of Barcelona at the fingertips of another renowned writer. Yo Maté a Kennedy (I Killed Kennedy). In a series of stories published across more than three decades, the author and his private detective chronicled corruption, violence and political and social upheaval in Spain and far beyond its borders. Amid the chaos and lies, Carvalho always found time for food (“Sherlock Holmes played the violin. I cook.”), mischievous
literary criticism and the odd cynical aphorism (“The cops guarantee order. All I do is uncover disorder.”). Vázquez Montalbán, a hugely prolific novelist, journalist and poet whose youthful activism led to him being imprisoned and tortured for 18 months under the Franco dictatorship, died of a heart attack in 2003, aged 64. His work remains hugely
popular in Spain and around the world, and his legacy lives on in the name and character of Andrea Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano. After talks between Vázquez Montalbán’s family and publishers, custody of Carvalho has now been entrusted to Carlos Zanón, who is working on a new novel set to appear next year.

Trump worries Nato with ‘obsolete’ comment
A statement by US Presidentelect Donald Trump that Nato is “obsolete” has caused “worry” in the alliance, Germany’s foreign minister says. Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it was a contradiction of comments made days ago by Mr Trump’s incoming defence chief. Mr Trump also said German Chancellor Angela Merkel had made “a catastrophic mistake” by admitting more than one million migrants. And he threatened German car makers with high import tariffs. Shares in BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler fell after he warned that cars built in Mexico, where they have invested in factories, would be taxed at 35% if exported to the US. BMW said the company would stick to its plans to open a Mexican plant
in 2019. Mr Trump was giving an interview in New York to two British and German newspapers, the Times and Bild, at Trump Tower. Donald Trump’s comments have caused dismay, concern - but perhaps not surprise - in Berlin. Few expected the new transatlantic relationship to echo the warm and trusting alliance nurtured by Angela Merkel and Barack Obama, who was a vocal supporter of Mrs Merkel’s refugee policy. There is anger, too. Germany’s outspoken Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel retorted that the migrant crisis was the result of “faulty, interventionist American policies
in the Mediterranean and Middle East”. That Mr Trump should take aim at Germany’s car manufacturers has also raised eyebrows, though few here believe his Congress would approve the 35% tax he appears to be threatening to impose on imported vehicles. Germans were largely unimpressed by Mr Trump during his election campaign and now, despite his own German heritage, the presidentelect is doing little to endear himself.

some relatives of ETA victims took part for the first time in the annual demonstration. Another 78 are in French jails.

A FLIGHT heading for Málaga from the Spanish-owned cityprovince of Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast was delayed after an African teenager was found in the hold. The Air Nostrum flight – the national arm of the Iberia fleet – was due to take off at 14.55 on Sunday, after a long refuelling stop en route from Fez, Morocco, to allow passengers to get off and have lunch. Ground staff found the youth when transferring luggage from the Fez plane to the one heading for Málaga. He claimed to be 17 years old, meaning as a minor, he is automatically given a greater standard of care than an adult migrant, but he will have to undergo forensic tests to confirm.

About us
Although many Removal firms nowadays claim to be a 'family business' few actually are. This is where we are different. We pride ourselves on giving each individual job (regardless of size) a personal service that is second to none, and in achieving complete customer satisfaction. After all, it’s our reputation - our name - at stake, so we do all we can to maintain our high standards and also meet those of the customer. It's for this reason that a majority of our work is due to recommendation.
Spain and France
We specialise in relocations to and from France and Spain, and often have weekly loads going to both destinations. By combining knowledge of the European laws with local information and years of overseas experience, we have managed to remain as reliable in Europe as we are in England, and consequently have built up a good reputation in both countries. We work closely alongside several English-run storage companies in Spain, allowing us greater flexibility with our customers on both sides. All work within our guidelines and adhere to our high standards. We have become one of their top recommended removal companies for moves to and from the UK, and still remain the removal company of choice for many ex-pats.
European Removals
We offer a professional yet personal service to and from most parts of Europe and will gladly tailor make a package to suit your individual needs. We understand that flexibility and reliability is of utmost importance to our customers, especially when moving overseas and we aim to cover both areas within the services we offer. Quotations for European moves follow the same protocol as for domestic UK removals (see ‘Quotations ‘). They require an estimator to visit your home (where possible) or can be submitted via ‘Online Quotes’ . You may wish to email your enquiry to: fredphillipsremovalsltd@ymail.com
Full or Part Loads
The main options to consider in a European move are how big your load is likely to be, and whether you require your belongings on a specific date, or just within a certain timescale. We offer two main services to cover these options: • Full Load - You pay for sole use of the vehicle. Gives you full control (as far as is possible) over the collection and delivery of your belongings, allowing you to work to a specific date. • Part Load - The cost effective option. You have part use of the vehicle along with other loads going via the same route to their destinations. Collection can still be when you require, but delivery is arranged on a full vehicle (cost efficient) basis. However, we will still do our best to work within your time frame.
Storage
We offer Storage Facilities both in the UK and in Spain. We can store anything from single items to full house loads, for any duration.
Our Storage Facilities offer the following: • 24 hour Security and Surveillance • Heated Warehouse • Full Insurance • Flexibility
Storage is charged on a weekly basis and customers are invoiced monthly. For more specific information please email us at: fredphillipsremovalsltd@ymail.com
Both services can have storage incorporated into the move, and both offer the same experienced, dedicated customer care service from planning and preparation right through to delivery. Spain and France: We specialise in relocations to and from France and Spain, and often have weekly loads going to both destinations. Aims: Our goal is to make your relocation overseas a completely stress free experience from start to finish, (as far as the removal is concerned!) and to maintain customer satisfaction throughout.

Women suffer considerably higher levels of work-related stress, anxiety and depression than men, with workplace sexism and familial responsibilities providing additional career pressures, a leading psychiatrist has said. It comes as official figures show that women aged 25-54 are more stressed than their male colleagues, with this pressure peaking for those aged 35-44, when many women are juggling family responsibilities, such as caring for children and elderly parents. Dr Judith Mohring, lead consultant psychiatrist at Priory’s Wellbeing Centre in the City of London, said women were
under constant, intense pressure, with company restructuring, lack of managerial support and balancing work and family life leaving them feeling drained. Women faced additional workplace pressures, such as having to prove they were as good as men, not being valued or promoted, unequal pay, and being expected to “look the part”, added Mohring, who treats many female professionals. Female managers in male-dominated fields sometimes found the strain intolerable, and their stress levels were also rising because families were more reliant on their income, she added.

The Railway Man by Eric Lomax
“Sometimes the hating has to stop.” Engraved on Eric Lomax’s tombstone. The film was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013 and released in the UK in January 2014. Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine ( War Horse) and Stellan Skarsgard. The book was published in 1995 and it was a lifelong ambition of Lomax’s to retell some extremely harrowing stories of POW beatings and torture during the second world war. The film captures some of his enthusiasm for the railway and his childhood fascination with locomotives but fails to show his passion although the book is far more successful. In other ways too. Eric was an officer in Singapore until its fall and then he became one of many POWs to be sent by the Japanese to work on the Thai-Burma railway, known as death railway because of the high number of fatalities. I was fortunate to visit the area a few years ago and travel on the same line up to the bridge over the River Kwai. Perhaps fortunate is rather misplaced here? Eric and his mates have to repair the machinery used to construct the railway. Initially

they have a lot of freedom and life is not particularly difficult. They find parts easily and make a rudimentary radio which allows them to follow the allies’ victories. It doesn’t take the Japanese long to realise what is happening and they discover the radio. The mechanics are treated brutally, including Lomax. Two of them die from their beatings and Lomax is left physically broken as well as mentally traumatised. The men are taken to Outram prison where disease is rife. In the film it is Irvine who is subjected to the waterboarding torture and his screams for mother are disturbing. Takashi Nagase was the Japanese interpreter responsible for Lomax’s nightmares. After the war it was always Lomax’s intention to track him down and kill him for subjecting him to so much abuse. He meets Patti and falls in love. Without her tenderness it is unlikely he would have pulled through. Post Traumatic Stress was not recognised and therefore not treated. Just like Laura Hilenbrand’s Unbroken we learn about the power of forgiveness and how it can heal. The film only touches on these issues. If you can cope with the torture then the book is a must to read. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. This morning, after starting the workhorse, I created a folder called “2017” on my hard drive for all the articles that will be written this year. It wasn’t until I went to create this folder that I realised that I have been writing for the SolTimes for 5 years (and this was after I had been writing a while and decided to catalogue what I had written). I had a look at some of the subject that we have covered over the past year and it was diverse! We started the year with Encryption and realised that it was essential to have and why; we looked at Scams, how to spot them and then avoid them; we examined Printer Problems and simple solutions; and ended the year with “Phishing”, “Spy blockers” and the SatNav from a Tablet. Today’s article is going to be an update of the article on “Tablet GPS SatNav”. These are just a few observations of the project and real, everyday (almost every day) use. Today is simply a clearing the ground for this year’s articles. The 7 inch tablet that I converted into a working GPS SatNav. First and foremost, it works like a dream! Since its creation people have asked me if the sunlight prevents seeing the screen.
January 2017
Well I can tell you that the picture is as clear in bright daylight as was my old SatNav. I choose to wear polarised sunglasses while driving in the daylight, personal choice! The effect on the old SatNav was to make the screen look black (conflicting angles of polarisation). There is no similar effect on my little Lenovo tablet. The greatest problem was finding a way of mounting the tablet. So many of the devices used to cradle are just a little too big or a little too small, or worse, cover the power or audio out sockets. My next project will be to find / create a secure fixing for the tablet that gives clean access to all the sockets and buttons. I have been using it to find locations, such as a bar in CampoSol, that sometimes have good 50’s Rock and Roll artists / bands. The bar wasn’t named in the savnav program but was found easily on google maps which gave the GPS co-ordinates. These I put into the program under the main menu ‘Search’ and submenu ‘Coordinates’, gave it the name “Marianos Restaurant – CampoSol”. How easy is that. I’m considering running a short course that will assist you from taking your Tablet from its box through to the SatNav complete. After which I will help you use the options to find just about anywhere you would like to go – any takers? While we all ate too much, drank too much and “made merry” I’ve been building a list of topics. If you want a specific topic dealt with, contact me and we will see what we can do for you. So until then, have a very good week.

Donald Trump’s Inauguration:
All you need to know
Make America Great Again!
Come the 20th January, Presidentelect Donald Trump will be officially sworn into office, taking the title President of the United States. Hell is expected to consume America soon after. The day before the vows are taken, as is tradition, a celebratory concert will take place featuring a whole host of celebrity performers. For Obama’s first inauguration concert - “We Are One” - the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, and Beyoncé played: Trump’s line-up is a little lacklustre by comparison. First, rather than delving straight into celebrity performances, there will be the “Voices of the People” parade. Participants include the DC Fire Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, King’s Academy Honor Choir, and the Republican Hindu Coalition. Following the introduction, “The Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” will kickstart, with Trump and his VP Mike Pence making speeches throughout. What’s perhaps more notable about Trump’s inauguration is the number of artists who have publicly refused to play the concert. Most recently, R Kelly revealed he definitely won’t be performing, despite the rumours. Other singers who have turned down the opportunity to perform include Charlotte Church and The X Factor UK contestant Rebecca Ferguson who wrote an open letter stating she’d only attend should she be able to perform the historically important song “Strange Fruit.”
Continually setting standards
So, who’s playing?
Donald Trump’s inauguration times
In just a matter of days Donald Trump will take the keys to the White House as he becomes the 45th President of the United States. It’s a bit more of a glitzy affair than when a newlyelected British Prime Minister visits the Monarch to take the reins. Here’s what you
need to know about Trump’s big day. When is it? The main event is this Friday, January 20. The ceremony will begin at 9:30am (2.30pm GMT) at the US Capitol Building with the official inauguration happening at noon (5pm GMT).
President-elect of the United States of America
Donald John Trump is an American businessman, former television personality, politician, and the President-elect of the United States. Toby Keith - Country singer best-known for “Should’ve Been A Cowboy”. Speaking about playing the event, Keith said: “I don’t apologise for performing for our country or military.”. Jon Voight - Acclaimed Midnight Cowboy actor and father of Angelina Jolie. Likely doing a speech rather than singing.. Jennifer Holliday Broadway actor who began her career in Dreamgirls and scored a hit with “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”. 3 Doors Down - Budget Nickelback. Radio City Rockettes - Precision dance company. Numerous members have come out against Trump, saying they are being forced to perform for “a monster”. Three of the thirteen dancers have decided to sit out of the performance. The Frontmen of Country - An all-star country group featuring Tim Rushlow, former lead singer of “Little Texas”, Larry Stewart of “Restless Heart” and Richie McDonald of “Lonestar”. Lee Greenwood - Another country singer, best known for “God Bless the USA”.

Dream In Spain
Guide To Buying Property In Spain
For many aspiring expats and emigré, buying a property in Spain represents a dream that will provide them with either the perfect holiday home or a new life in a country justifiably famous for its superb quality of life. After all, what could be better than living in a country with a wonderfully benign climate, a friendly and tolerant population, an intact culture and an al fresco life that lasts for much of the year? Add to this a services infrastructure that is well developed, an accessible language, quick and efficient communications to Europe and political stability - and you have somewhere that is ideal for retirement or holidays. property in Spain
However, there are pitfalls to buying property in Spain which can swiftly turn any dream into a nightmare! Indeed, anyone that’s started to research buying property in Spain will most certainly come across the handfuls of international news stories of expats who have unknowingly bought illegally built houses or suffered from ‘land grab’ and the costs associated with infrastructure works.

So, the question is: how do you avoid the pitfalls inherent in buying property in Spain? This is a question that is, arguably, more important now than ever before, as foreign buyers seek to take advantage of the collapse in Spanish property prices. These have dropped massively since the height of the boom in 2007, and have resulted in a sea of bargains, with some properties in Spain having dropped in value by as much as 40 percent.

For the first time in many years, Spanish property has become affordable again with some properties now offering truly extraordinary value for money. The first thing to appreciate is that you can buy Spanish property safely! Most people do - although a significant number still end up with problems, partly due to their own stupidity and partly due to the ‘system’ in Spain. The key, of course, is knowledge. Before you think of buying Spanish property, make sure you know what you are doing, and are familiar with the way to buy property in Spain.

hard — not only in the financial sector, but also in tourism: 2013 saw a 7% drop in tourism, most of which was due to a declining number of business visitors. However, 2015 saw Spain ahead of other EU countries regarding its economic recovery, mostly due to the bounce back in the service sector. These figures are promising for Madrid as Spain’s financial hub. If you consider moving to Spain but do not yet know where to go, the fact that a significant percentage of Madrid’s population is international may pique your interest. The cost of living in Madrid is also lower than in other European capitals such as Brussels, Amsterdam, or Berlin. Some of Spain’s best international schools for British, American, French, and German expats, for example, abound throughout the city. Barcelona and Andalusia Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is another city that attracts expats from all over the world. As a port city on the Mediterranean coast, it is simultaneously considered a global city. In fact, after long hardships during the economic crisis, the first six months of 2014 saw a 7% increase of goods transported through Barcelona’s port. Barcelona, which hosts 91% of all foreign direct investment in Catalonia, was able to increase its inflows by 50% during the tough economic environment between 2007 and 2013. Barcelona may cater more to younger expats moving to Spain, due to its popularity among European exchange students, its international flair, and largely touristic ambience — tourism makes up roughly 14% of Barcelona’s economy (2015). It’s also a bilingual and bicultural city, which may make moving to Barcelona easier for some expats. If the weather is an important criterion for choosing your destination in Spain, the capital of Andalusia in the south might be of interest to you. Seville is a culturally rich city with a high number of annual visitors. Many European retirees, e.g. from Germany, Sweden, and the UK, choose to live along the Costa del Sol, enjoying the warm climate and the endless sandy beaches.

Your Guide To Spain Before worrying about paperwork and taxation, you need to apply for an NIE (Número de Identificación de Estranjeros), the identification number for foreigners, regardless of whether or not you require a work visa. The application for a NIE is not very complicated. It simply requires you to bring a completed applications form (EX-15) and a copy, your passport and a copy, a passportsized photograph, and a proof of your current address in Spain to the nearest Oficina de Extranjeros. It should take up to three weeks for your NIE to arrive. Taxation in Spain Non-residents get taxed on any income arising in Spain. If you are a resident, you will be taxed on your worldwide income, but you may deduct any income tax paid back home. If you are a non-resident the Impuesto sobre la Renta de no Residentes (IRNR) applies to you. Residents need to look into the Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas (IRPF). The IRPF regulations were changed in 2015 and the easiest way to get an overview of your financial situation in this respect is by using an online calculator. Foreign nationals who
are neither EU-citizens, nor nationals of a country with a special agreement with Spain, are required to pay taxes in Spain. Due to the fact that these tax regulations again differ based on country of origin, please see the relevant brochure of the Spanish tax office for detailed information. The requirements differ by country of origin and type of employment. For example, if you come from the United States to work in Spain, you must contact the Internal Revenue Service in the States for more information, or, if the legalese doesn’t scare you, take a look at the Income Tax Convention with Spain. What Kind of Exemptions Apply to You? You may be from a country that has a double taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) with Spain. Check the UN database to see if this applies to you. If this is the case, you must make sure which country is entitled to your taxes. Generally DTAA’s mean those present in Spain for less than 183 days in a year will not be taxed by both their home and host country. Take the UK, for example, which has a double taxation treaty with Spain: if a British citizen is planning on working
in Spain, they must pay taxes in their country of residence. If they are a resident of both Spain and the UK, according to the countries’ respective regulations, they must pay taxes where their permanent home is. If their permanent home is both in the UK and in Spain, they would pay taxes in the country where they reside more frequently. From the example described above, you see how complicated figuring out taxation abroad might get. If you are unclear about anything, consult a tax advisor in Spain who has worked with foreign nationals from your country of origin before. We also recommend you seek the help of an attorney when considering moving to and working in Spain. Finding That Dream Job in Spain The entire process of starting to work in Spain is made much easier if you already have an employer before migrating, as they may be able to help you with the formalities of the Spanish bureaucratic system and endless paperwork. If you are searching for work on your own, having a good grip on the Spanish language will surely help when browsing popular job websites.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE. Question. My brother and myself recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keep the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor, with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The tax office is now claiming that, in respect to my half, 2 taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on my half and then 2. tax on a donation to my brother. Is this correct? Answer. I’m afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. The tax office is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed, this is taxed twice: inheritance and donation. Best solutions, depending on the
way the will was worded, would have been: Option A. If the will states everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional ). In which case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him which would have made it a donation). He would have inherited the complete property directly from your father. Option B. If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership which is much cheaper than a donation. The only way forward at this point now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary claiming that you made a mistake. English green belt set to get 360,000 new homes
is committed to protect the green belt. Only in exceptional circumstances may councils alter green belt boundaries, after consulting local people and submitting the revised local plan for examination. “We’ve been absolutely clear that councils must prioritise development on brownfield land, and have announced plans to radically boost brownfield development and bring life back to abandoned sites.” Housebuilders described green belt boundaries as “historic and arbitrary lines on a map”.
The number of homes being planned on green belt land in England has increased to more than 360,000, according to countryside campaigners, who fear ministers are poised to weaken protections to meet ambitious building targets. The assessment by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) found that the number of homes planned on sites previously meant to block urban sprawl has risen from 81,000 in 2012 to 362,346, with the largest number slated for development in the northwest and east of England. Open fields owned by Oxford colleges including Magdalene and Brasenose and sites close to the New Forest in Hampshire are among the green belt areas that could contain housing. The threat comes as Sajid Javid, the communities’ secretary, prepares to launch a new national housing policy, expected in the coming weeks. He recently praised Birmingham city council for allowing housebuilding on green belt, but he has also described green belt as “absolutely sacrosanct”. The most dramatic example of a threat to green belt land is around Manchester, where thousands of hectares have been identified by planners for about 50,000 homes. Andy Burnham, the former shadow home secretary who is running to become mayor of Manchester, this week warned that this development would “diminish quality of life in some communities and restrict people’s access to good air and green space”. The Jockey Club, which owns Kempton Park racecourse in Surrey, this week asked the local council to zone it for 3,000 houses in a move that sparked anger from local residents and allegations of an “unwanted desecration of desperately needed green belt” from the council leader, Ian Harvey. The number of homes granted planning permission annually in green belt rose fivefold from
2,258 in 2009-10 to 11,977 in 2014-15, according to the House of Commons library. The net loss of green belt between 2004 and 2014-15 amounts to 41,570 hectares (103,000 acres). Environmentalists claim the spread desecrates Britain’s natural environment, but housebuilders and some planners argue the increase still means that only a small fraction of the country is urbanised. The release of green belt is essential to boosting the number of new homes, which remain short of the 250,000 estimate of annual need. Protection of green belt is highly sensitive for the government. Theresa May and Javid are among many Conservative MPs whose constituencies contain green belt and are under pressure to build more housing. The party made protection of the green belt a manifesto commitment, but has also pledged to tackle the housing crisis. The housing minister, Gavin Barwell, has said “most new building [on green belt] is inappropriate”. “The government speaks with forked tongue on the green belt,” said Michael Tyce, a local CPRE activist campaigning against proposals for 17,000 homes on protected land around Oxford. “It says it will die in a ditch to prevent it, but it keeps allowing building on it.” Ministers are able to open up the green belt for construction without expressly ordering it. Whitehall obliges councils to produce local plans to meet housing demand. If these include rezoned green belt, the secretary of state can decide whether or not to call it in. If he does not, then he is in effect granting tacit approval, but is able to say the decision was a local one. A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government said of the CPRE figures: “These claims are based purely on projections in local plans, including those not yet adopted. This government
Andrew Whitaker, the planning director at the Home Builders Federation, said: “A strategic review of green belt policy could better ensure that this broadbrush policy evolves to cover the type of land many believe it was set up to protect, such as areas of natural beauty and gaps between settlements, while allowing the country to address our housing crisis in a sustainable way.” Shaun Spiers, the chief executive of the CPRE, said: “The government faces a choice. It can either continue to set inflated and undeliverable targets that fail to increase building rates and force the release of green belt land and other countryside for development. Or it can set realistic targets and get the nation behind building the new homes we need.” Hugh Ellis, the head of policy at the Town and Country Planning Association, said the government needed to move to a more strategic approach to housing by planning several substantial new settlements, if green belt is to be protected. He said that after the Second World War the policies of designating green belt and building new towns operated together. “What has happened is we have stopped building the new towns, but have kept the green belt,” he said. “It is not surprising we have a housing crisis.” Local politicians are growing increasingly resigned to the need to allocate protected land for housing, with 58% of councillors who preside over green belt saying that their council will do so in the next five years, according to a survey by the Local Government Information Unit and the National Trust. “There are concerns the new housing white paper, expected later this month, could make matters worse, if it sets rigid housing numbers for local plans that don’t take account of local factors such as green belt and areas of outstanding natural beauty,” said a spokesperson for the National Trust.
Adventures in space come in many shades
Space, as Captain James T Kirk used to say in Star Trek, was the final frontier. Homeowners tend to think smaller. To them, black holes are the cupboards under the stairs; a Galaxy is a bar of chocolate; a space is somewhere to be filled with something like furniture, a TV or even a plant. But what kind of plant? If the space isn’t particularly large and is warm and dry, it could house a cactus. If the space lacks light, then perhaps an aspidistra would be ideal. And if the space is big, then give it a big plant, a bold and colourful foliage plant. Surprisingly, there is no shortage of leafy giants that can transform a spacious room and provide year-round interest.
The likes of the Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa) and the blushing philodendron (Philodendron erubescens ‘Burgundy’) will be quite happy to reach for the ceiling. But for something quite eye-catching, go for a croton, those dashinglycolourful evergreens which relish bright, warm corners. Water sparingly in winter and feed fortnightly when daylight lengthens. Crotons come in a multitude of contrasting colours – their glossy leaves have veins of yellow, red, orange, pink and even purple, and if there’s a container spacious enough to hold three or four, then the result could be spectacular. yorkshirepost.co.uk

Barmynoches
The spiritual well-being of Alqueria is in the hands of the Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido which is rather unfortunate as the good Priest is an atheist and an ardent follower of Sartre. He was once conscientious, full of vitality and pious but after hearing a Manuela confession he is now religiously bankrupt, lethargic and a drunkard. Preaching Existentialism from the pulpit brought him to the attention of a rather fierce bishop who in turn notified the Vatican. To complicate matters further Lánguido rather liked the life of a priest and even more so now as he has dispensed with the formality of chastity. In order to maintain his lifestyle the good Father decided to form his own religion, that of ‘Cuthbertism’. He felt it necessary to include the rudiments of Christianity, especially the festivals which are much liked by the people of Alqueria as they mean a day off work and an excuse to consume vast amounts of Remitroot alcohol. By skilfully altering the Christian protocols and customs he was able to produce a religion which well matched the Alquerian temperament and indeed
viewpoint
anyone who was slightly hedonistic in nature. Christmas Eve was replaced with Barmynoches, which is when the prophet Cuthbert left the Golondrina Verde and staggered to the Bar La Casa Devante and received enlightenment. This ‘enlightenment’ came as a brilliant flash travelling laterally through the upper reaches of his cerebral passageways. However many have experienced this phenomenon especially after drinking alarming quantities of Remitroot Grapa, indeed it is a documented side effect. But Lánguido was no longer happy! Cuthbertism became a victim of its own success. Followers from far and wide invaded Alqueria, causing a logistical nightmare and what is worse involving our worthy Priest in extra work which is against all the teachings of Cuthbertism. In order to solve this paradox Lánguido decreed that all followers not born and permanently resident in Alqueria should pay an enlightenment penance which included a very uncomfortable robe made from dried and woven goat droppings and a litre of Remitroot Grapa. This ploy wasn’t however successful and simply filled Alqueria with devout foul smelling drunkards who scratched themselves a lot. Lánguido was at a loss as what to do and seriously considered giving up religion and work for a living. Then it stuck him. Reintroduce the vows of chastity for the followers but not the priest or the indigenous devotees. The foreigners departed Alqueria with much haste in search of a new religion and a new guru.
Humanists of Murcia Walk Into the New Year And also celebrate their annual AGM On a beautifully clear and sunny morning, 24 intrepid Easy Ramblers assembled in the car park opposite the Bar Puente in La Majada, for the first two hour walk of 2017. Despite the brilliant sun, the bitter wind led the walkers to don almost as many fleeces, scarves, hats and gloves as they might have worn in UK. Ably led by Audrey we left from the eastern side of the village, causing great excitement for the many dogs in the gardens and orchards that bordered the road. Soon we were out in open fields with distant views of the surrounding hills and down to the sea in Mazarron bay. A steady pace brought us back via the rambla and then past more orchards and greenhouses to the Bar Puente in time for the AGM. Officer’s reports were presented and accepted, and those committee members who wished to continue were confirmed. The new Publicity Officer, Martine Smets was welcomed
The Struggle for Supremacy
Her Royal Highness Sayyida al Hurra, Somebody Else’s Cat, resides with us because she wishes it. She regards all other forms of life, including humans, to be inferior, and as such we should know our places. She is the most regal cat I have ever met, and also one of the most intelligent. She is capable of joinedup thinking and forward planning. She knows that ultimately a human is a lot bigger than a cat, even if the cat has superior armaments, so she organises her life to her own convenience without provoking confrontation. Between us there are unwritten but clearly understood rules of behaviour; She doesn’t back down, she simply circumnavigates any situations where a cat/human conflict could occur. However, the other day it all unravelled. It was hot and I needed a sit-down. Specifically in the breeze and the shade, on the recliner chair on the porch. ‘You can’t sit there,’ Pete said. ‘Si is on it.’ ‘I’ll ask her to move.’ ‘You can’t do that!’ ‘Watch me!’ I approached the chair with its incumbent cat with deference. ‘Si’ I said, ‘I want to sit there.’ The chair continued to be full of apparently sleeping cat. ‘I said, I want to sit there. Please get up.’ She raised her head. ‘You may stroke the top of my head.’ I stroked the top of her head. ‘Now please get up.’ She opened her citrus green eyes and stared at me. ‘There are other

chairs.’ ‘I want to sit in this one. Get up. Please.’ I moved my hand towards her rear end in an encouraging gesture. With the speed of light a paw flashed towards my arm, just stopping short of contact. She narrowed her eyes and fixed me with a death glare of such ferocity that I am surprised that I did not spontaneously combust. ‘How dare you even dream it. Go away.’ ‘I said please.’ We locked eyes. It was clear to me that she had no intention of relinquishing ‘her’ chair, and that in a fist fight she would win, so I employed the advantage of greater body mass. I picked up a cushion and dropped it gently on top of her. ‘Move, or I’ll sit on you.’ I said, thinking that a hornet’s nest would be quite comfortable in comparison. She emerged from underneath the cushion and stalked off, waving her tail. Later I apologised to her and she came and sat on my lap. I was forgiven!

and finally our outgoing Chairman, John Blakey gave a short resume of the development of the group since it was started by he and his wife Rhian in 2010. The chair was then taken by the new Chairperson, Anne Edwards, who proposed a vote of thanks to John and Rhian for their sterling work in leading the group from small beginnings to its present 60 paid up members. After the meeting was closed, Rhian offered some food for thought from the latest BHA bulletins. We then adjourned to the dining table for the usual excellent lunch of the Bar Puente. From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. A warming, comforting soup
For the dumplings 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped 2½ tbsp plain flour 4 slices sourdough, crusts removed, lightly toasted and roughly blitzed in a food processor, ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 40g pine nuts, lightly toasted, 20g parsley, finely chopped, 1½ tsp thyme leaves, finely chopped. Finely grated zest of 2 lemons 2 eggs, beaten 140ml chicken stock (or good-quality vegetable stock – do not use bouillon) 125g feta, crumbled into 1-2cm pieces Salt and black pepper For the broth
3 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed with the flat of a knife 2 onions, peeled, quartered and layers peeled apart into individual ‘petals’ 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp paprika ¼ tsp cayenne pepper 2 cinnamon sticks, 8 cardamom pods, if you don’t want to pick them out of the soup, tie them up in muslin 2 tsp tomato paste 700g swiss chard, stalks and leaves separated, stalks cut into 2cm-wide slices, leaves roughly torn 3 tomatoes, peeled and chopped into 1cm dice 1 litre chicken stock 80ml lemon juice
First make the dumplings. Put the oil in a medium frying pan on a medium-high flame. Once hot, fry the onion, stirring a few times, for about four minutes, until soft and translucent. Transfer to a medium bowl, add all the other dumpling ingredients apart from the feta. Add three-quarters of a teaspoon of salt and mix to combine, then add the feta and mix again, taking care the cheese doesn’t break up too much. Using your hands, form the mixture into round 40g dumplings, tightly compressing them as you roll so they’ll stay intact while cooking. You should end up with 18 dumplings. Set aside. For the broth. Heat the oil in an extra-large pot on a medium-high
flame and, once hot, fry the garlic, onion, spices and tomato paste for five minutes, stirring often, until the onions and garlic are soft and fragrant. Add the chard stalks, saute for 10 minutes, stirring frequently, then stir in the tomatoes, stock, lemon juice, a litre and a half of water and a teaspoon and a quarter of salt. Bring up to a simmer, cook for eight minutes, then add the chard leaves and cook for seven minutes more. Gently drop the dumplings into the simmering soup, poach for 10 minutes and then serve.

1 tsp baking powder 170ml whole milk (or almond or coconut milk if you’d rather) 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 Preheat the waffle maker. Put all the ingredients in a jug and blitz with a hand-held blender. Make the waffles as per the instructions for your machine. Be careful not to overfill, or you get a batter volcano. I find 2-3 minutes about right, or until they are golden and crisp. 2 Serve with maple syrup (or honey). In a sitcom, you’d offer a generous jugful, but I measure out a little dipping pot per child to stop them drenching half a bottle on a single waffle. We have fruit too: whatever’s in the fruit bowl, sliced.

The researchers wanted to know if the dog whines or barks when left alone at home, for example, or if it cringes, cowers, hides, or tries to avoid handling when at the vet. Fearful of loud noises, strangers When they crunched the data, they found dogs that showed higher levels of anxiety and impulsivity were also more grey around the muzzle, regardless of size, medical issues or whether they were spayed or neutered. When dogs were particularly fearful of loud noises, and unfamiliar animals and people, that “significantly predicted” muzzle greyness. Female dogs also showed higher levels of grey than males. King didn’t have an explanation why, though she guessed it may be related to hormones. Grandin believes females tend to get more anxious, which she has seen in other animals.

Stress can make humans turn prematurely grey and now there’s evidence our four-legged furry companions may suffer a similar fate. Young dogs that are anxious or impulsive are more likely to have a grey muzzle than their calmer counterparts, a new study has found. It’s the first research to look at premature greying in dogs, said co-author and Colorado-based veteran animal behaviourist Camille King. “I was not at all surprised by the results,” King told TODAY. “For many years, I noticed that dogs I saw in my practice for anxiety or impulsivity issues were often greying early.” “I immediately thought of the presidents,” added Temple Grandin, a co-author of the study and professor of animal science at Colorado State University. ANITA “Every single one of the presidents THE DOG has looked horrible at the end of the presidency… they aged quickly.” GROOMER As dogs get older, it’s common for them to lose pigment in their facial hair, just like humans. But why do some young pups become whitehaired? Cruise Guide
Panama City
Panama City is a fusion of history and modernity and is a cultural hub. The most cosmopolitan capital in Central America, Panama City is both vibrant metropolis and gateway to tropical escapes. Many worlds coexist here. Welcoming both east and west, Panama is a regional hub of trade and immigration. The resulting cultural cocktail forges a refreshing ‘anything goes’ attitude, more dynamic and fluid than its neighbours... Panama has been a destination on the cusp of the mainstream for ages, but somehow still remains a secret. More greatness for us to enjoy, we say. This eight-day trip opens the lid on the natural splendour of this overlooked gem of a country, giving travellers the chance to hike cloud forests, snorkel the Caribbean and even discover where that delicious morning cup of joe comes from at a coffee plantation. Panama is spectacular, and the best way to promote it is by word-ofmouth. Tell your friends! Visit Colon Island in Bocas del Toro hassle-free with a five-day tour from Panama City in a small group. While in Bocas del Toro, you can visit world-class beaches and islands, like Cayo Coral, Playas las Estrellas, Boca del Drago and Cayo Zapatilla, where you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel, see wildlife, swim and relax.
Puerto Limón
Panama Canal
The biggest city on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, the birthplace of United Fruit and capital of Limón Province, this hardworking port city sits removed from the rest of the country. Cruise ships deposit dazed-looking passengers between October and May. Around here, business is measured by truckloads of fruit, not busloads of tourists, so don’t expect any pampering...
August 15, 1914, marks the 100th anniversary of the official opening of the Panama Canal, the American-built waterway across the Isthmus of Panama that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The 50-mile-long passage created an important shortcut for ships; after the canal was constructed, a vessel sailing between New York and California was able to bypass the long journey around the tip of South America and trim nearly 8,000 miles from its voyage. The canal, which uses a system of locks to lift ships 85 feet above sea level, was the largest engineering project of its time. This was hailed as one of the great achievements of the 20th Century, the Panama Canal connects 160 countries and 1,700 ports around the world.
Amazing Adventures
Panama’s Colon is best known as the gateway to the Miraflores Locks, where visitors can watch the Panama Canal, one of the world’s greatest feats of engineering, in action. The famous canal is only one of the region’s many attractions, however. Colon is home to the world’s first transcontinental railway, and its magnificent red and gold trains traverse Central America from the Atlantic to the Pacific in a single afternoon. The country’s vast, virgin rainforest is home to sloths, 10,000 plant species and 900 species of birds, including harpy eagles. Having regained control of its famous canal at the turn of the 21st century, Panama is now steering its own boat in terms of tourism. One of the main objectives of a ?1 billion development program, in addition to widening the canal and constructing new beaches and eco-friendly rainforest resorts, has been to persuade cruise lines to use Colon and Balboa (on the Pacific side of the canal) as base ports so their passengers spend more time -- and money -- ashore.

He has been in F1 for four seasons and has shown well at Williams alongside first Pastor Maldonado and then Massa. His best results so far are two second places, at the British and German grands prix in 2014. Wolff has said he will end his ties with the personal management of Bottas’ career now the driver is under his employment. Sauber team boss Monisha Kaltenborn said Wehrlein had shown “talent throughout his career”. She added: “Last year, in his rookie Formula 1 season, he proved his potential by scoring one point in the Austrian Grand Prix. “There is surely more to come from Pascal, and we want to give him the
chance to further grow and learn at the pinnacle of motorsport.” Wehrlein, whose move is likely to have been facilitated by financial support from Mercedes for Sauber, added: “It is a new challenge in a new team, and I am really excited and looking forward to this new adventure. “Our objective is to establish ourselves in the midfield and to score points on a regular basis.”

Terry to remain at Chelsea
John Terry will not be leaving Chelsea before the end of the season. The 36-year-old centre-back will see out the rest of his contract at Stamford Bridge, which expires in the summer. Reports claim Bournemouth had asked Chelsea if they could take Terry on loan for the rest of the campaign, after losing on-loan Nathan Ake back to the Blues. Terry has struggled for game-time under Antonio Conte after an earlyseason injury and the Italian’s successful backthree system has spurred

A rule change has reduced the number of foreigners allowed in a move which could slow down the wave of big-money signings from Europe. Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been linked with a move to China that would be worth £30m a year. A statement said the new measures will address “irrational investments.” Previously the rule was “4+1” - four foreigners of any nationality plus one Asian in a match day squad. Teams will now also be required to name two under-23 Chinese players in their match day squads, with at least one in the starting XI, with the Chinese Football Association also looking into “signature fees and other illegal activities” in recent transfers. Chelsea midfielders Oscar and John Mikel Obi have already moved to China this month, while former Manchester United and Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez reportedly became the world’s highest-paid player when he joined Shanghai Shenhua last month.

Golf’s most prolific major winner, Jack Nicklaus, says Rory McIlroy must improve if he is to dominate the sport. McIlroy goes into 2017 with only Jason Day above him in the world rankings and with four major titles to his name. Nicklaus believes the 27-year-old from Northern Ireland now has to decide whether he wants to try to become the sport’s greatest player. In recent years Nicklaus has developed a strong friendship with McIlroy, who often practises at the 76-year-old American’s Bears Club in Jupiter,
Florida. “Rory is one of those young men who has got a tremendous amount of talent,” Nicklaus said. “He has won and played on his talent to this point. If he wishes to dominate and go forward then he’s got to improve.” Nicklaus warned that standing still at the top of the game means only one thing - quickly being passed. And he believes the UK’s leading player is now approaching the prime of his career. “He has to work hard, he’s got to focus on what he is trying to do and it is up to him. Certainly he has all the tools to be able to do it - it is just whether he has the desire and
the willingness to give up some other things. “And that’s his call. I mean, whatever Rory does, he has established himself as one of the great players that has ever played the game. “Whether he wants to be the greatest player to have played the game, that’s his determination and it’s his decision whether he wants to make that effort to try to do that.” Meanwhile this weekend, Graeme Storm produced a remarkable performance to edge out Rory McIlroy in a tense play-off to win his first European Tour title in almost 10 years at the BMW SA Open.
