RYANAIR FIGHTS SOLTIMES BACK Spanish airports affected by yet more industrial action in France. In the face of yet another strike by French air traffic controllers this Monday, which has caused widespread disruption to passengers at airports all over Spain, the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair is calling for support from members of the public in order to take the issue to the European parliament. Ryanair has been forced to cancel 45 flights on Monday, including services to and from Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga, and has joined other airlines in setting up a petition which will be sent to the French government and the European Commission. The petition requests that the continual

disruption caused by the French controllers should be stopped, and specifically that negotiation be used instead of industrial action, that controllers from other countries should be allowed to manage flights in French air space during any strike, and that minimum service levels should be enforced in order for services to be maintained. The airline urges people to sign the petition at www. keepeuropesskiesopen.com, and states that once a million signatures have been achieved the petition will be sent to the EC. The text of the petition states simply “I, the undersigned, call on the European Commission, the European Parliament and Member States to protect Europe from repeated

extortion and disruption by Air Traffic Control unions.” Anyone who wishes to avoid the threat of yet more strikes disrupting flights in western Europe is urged to add their name to the document. French ATC announced strike action from 6 to 10 March 2017, with many passengers likely to be affected. Eurocontrol in Brussels says the Brest and Bordeaux control centres will be affected from 5am on Monday until 7pm on Friday, with the action in the south of France running from 5am on Tuesday until 5am on Friday. There will also be an impact on services overflying France, including links from the UK and Italy, Switzerland and Spain and flights between Britain and the Canary Islands.

Five-year-old rescued

A terrified five-year-old girl was saved by firemen after climbing out of seventh floor window in her pyjamas after allegedly being left home alone by her mother.

The confused youngster climbed onto the narrow ledge after waking up alone at her home in the Spanish Costa Blanca city of Alicante. Her mum had allegedly left to pick her boyfriend up from the gym.

Footage showed the child crying as worried onlookers watched from the ground 70ft below. Firemen laid out a safety net to catch her in a race against time before rescuing her in a cherry picker while colleagues guided them from the floor above after a failed attempt to break down the front door. Local fire chief Adrian Garcia revealed afterwards

the ledge she was standing on was just one centimetre wide. He said: “The girl received medical attention afterwards although she didn’t have any injuries and we asked her whether there was a problem inside her home and why she had climbed out the window. “She said she had woken up to find she was alone and got frightened when she saw she couldn’t get out the front door and chose that way out to reach the street. “The ledge she had her feet on was only a centimetre wide. If her arms had tired as she was holding onto the window, she would have fallen. Luckily we were able to reach her in time. “I think she only became conscious of the danger she was in when she heard the sirens. “When we reached her there were neighbours holding out a sheet below her and others putting mattresses on the ground.” The child was kept calm as a cherry picker edged towards her.

Catalans prepare vote for independence

Catalonia is organising the logistics for a referendum on independence from Spain it plans to hold by the end of September, even if it goes against the wishes of the national government, the Catalan government’s foreign policy chief said. “We are now preparing the referendum because ... either in an agreed way or not, we need to be ready,” Raul Romeva said on Thursday at the Catalan regional government’s representative office in London. The wealthy northeastern region, which has its own language and culture, is home to a strong separatist movement, which has been intensified by high unemployment and austerity cuts in Spain. But attempts to hold a Scottish-style

referendum on independence have been blocked in the courts by Madrid. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s centre-right government has said any referendum on secession is illegal and against the constitution, a stance supported by the judiciary. Catalan proindependence campaigners held a symbolic vote two years ago in which nearly two million people expressed a desire to secede, although turnout was relatively low. Senior politicians involved in the vote, which was staffed by volunteers, have faced sanctions or trial for pursuing measures

deemed illegal by the Constitutional Court. The latest opinion poll, showed 45.3 percent in favour of secession and 46.8 percent against. Romeva said: “If finally this negotiation with the government is getting nothing and there is no agreement we are committed and we will go ahead with organising and holding a referendum and this will be before September 2017.

The Future´s Bright Spain is the third most visited country in the world. The figures are overwhelming, because in 2016 our country received a whopping 75.6 million international travellers, a historical figure to date. The Valencian Community also broke its own record by receiving almost eight million foreign visitors and of them, 70% chose the province of Alicante as their destination. And to that, it is added that, under the Costa Blanca brand, the province was the tourist area that attracted more Spanish travellers from all over the country in 2016. Matilde Asian, Secretary of State for Tourism, closed the meeting by congratulating “the people who have an important mission in Costa Blanca. Much remains to be done, but together, with the experience, the work and the illusion shown, we can guarantee economic growth and job creation. Tourism is our present and will be our future “.

The heads of continental Europe’s biggest economies meet in the gilded splendour of the Palace of Versailles on Monday, seeking ways of strengthening an EU facing Britain’s exit and mounting populism. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande whose two countries are often described as the European Union’s “engine” - will be joined by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Italian premier Paolo Gentiloni. “The idea is to try to give political momentum to the four nations,” a French diplomatic source said. The meeting comes

in the run-up to celebrations on March 25th of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which founded what is now called the EU. That date, combined with last year’s referendum in Britain on leaving the EU and the rise of populist and nationalist figures, has triggered a wave of angst about Europe’s future. The EU faces legislative elections in The Netherlands this month, followed by presidential elections in France in April and May. Germany, Europe’s biggest economy and paymaster, holds legislative elections in September.

Ozone Treatment

Dr. Careless Carlos had been hard at work, his first task, to train a medical team ‘par excellence ‘. In Alquerian terms that meant being able to differentiate between an intravenous drip and a bedpan, getting to this standard proved exhaustive and tested Carlos’s reserves to their utmost.

Carlos THEN opened an ‘ozone treatment clinic’ in Alqueria’s Calle Generalissimo next to ‘Cod Pieces R Us’, Barmy Bartoli’s extremely popular emporium. ‘Ozone therapy’ is an alternative treatment that increases the amount of oxygen in the body through the introduction of ozone usually by intravenous drip. It purports to cure many ills and gives the beneficiary increased vigour and a feeling of well-being. Carlos, ever interested in pioneering new treatments, some of which he is still under investigation for, intended to cash in. Manuela was given the treatment free so she could act as a reference for the procedure and thus bring in clients. Manuela however needed an anaesthetic before she would let Carlos anywhere near her and questioned why, when she woke up his hands were on her shoulders and he was breathing heavy. However customers duly booked and the treatments began, surprising without incident, initially. The

treatment

Washing Powder and Rabbits

involves taking of blood via a drip, injecting ozone in gas form and letting it drip back in, this is when problems started. Carlos’s assistant, Pablo Daftio decided to celebrate Alqueria’s win in the ‘Murcia Under Fives Rugby Union knock Out Challenge Cup’. Alqueria’s team was made up of ex-convicts shanghaied from the Locemallup Prison near Minsk. Pablo in his intoxicated state started getting the blood mixed up which led to a fleet of ambulances ferrying clients to the main hospitals in Spain. Pablo decimated Carlos’s patient list and Carlos dropped his prices. The suppliers of the ozone used in the treatment, afraid of bad publicity stopped supplying Carlos’s clinic giving our worthy medico a serious problem. Antonio Poyato the owner of Alqueria’s world renown Remitroot crop came to the rescue with Remitroot gas. As both Remitroot and Ozone gases are colourless it was easy to substitute the former for the latter. To those who are familiar with Remitroot the results should have been predictable. The effects were similar as Remitroot when taken orally but they were immediate. Patients became completely intoxicated as soon as the blood flowed back into their systems. Likewise with the aphrodisiac effect, many patients didn’t make it out of the clinic. The treatment became popular with elderly gentlemen. Alqueria’s streets became thronged with semi-clad drunken old men in various states of sexual readiness. Something had to be done. In true Alquerian style it was decided to close the clinic and never mention it again.

Pete has an alternative language all of his own. It is not dissimilar to Cockney rhyming slang, but a lot more complicated and a lot more oblique; simply looking for a word that rhymes with the word in question will not always give you the answer for which you are looking. We were intending to put Henry the car through the Mora Oil car wash on our way back from Arboleas. As we approached the roundabout out of Arboleas Pete said ‘Soap powder.’ ‘It’s all right, we’ve got plenty.’ I replied, mentally noting that he deserved Brownie points for thinking constructively if unnecessarily about the shopping list. ‘Soap powder.’ He repeated. ‘We don’t need any.’ I reiterated. ‘But if you’d told me sooner I could have stopped at Coviran and got some.’ ‘We don’t need it. You’ve just got to remember it.’ ‘Why?’ ‘Just remember soap powder.’ I gave up. We drove into Mora Oil, got the card for the machine and positioned Henry ready for his promised bath. ‘Soap powder.’ Pete pointed at Henry’s aerial. Then the penny dropped! Soap powder = Ariel = aerial = unscrew Henry’s aerial before the machine breaks it off! That was an easy one compared to 2.15 a.m. on 1st March. Pete grabbed my hand, pumped my arm up and down twice and said ‘Eeee.’ ‘Eh?’ I said. My brain was still slumbering and I was not at my conversational best. He pumped my arm again and

By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com

repeated ‘Eeee.’ ‘What?’ My brain stirred enough to actually manage a word. For the third time my arm rose unwillingly into the air. ‘Eeee.’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘What do you think I mean?’ It was no good – I was going to have to come up with something. ‘You’ve seen a mouse on a pogo stick?’ ‘No?’ You are a mouse on a pogo stick?’ ‘No.’ I’m a mouse on a pogo stick?’ ‘No. What date is it?’ Amazingly, I knew. ‘1st of March.’ ‘And what do you say on the 1st of the month to bring good luck?’ ‘Ah! Rabbits.’ ‘There you are! It’s a rabbit hopping around and squeaking.’ Just to emphasise the point he bounced my arm again and repeated ‘Eeee.’ He let go of my arm and promptly went to sleep. I had to count hopping rabbits for a good half hour before my recently awakened brain could find sleep again!

North Korea fires four ballistic missiles into sea near Japan

North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan’s north-west coast early on Monday, South Korean and Japanese officials said, days after the reclusive state promised retaliation over USSouth Korea military drills it sees as a preparation for war. South Korea’s military said the missiles were unlikely to have been intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) which could reach the United States, but flew on average 1,000km (600 miles) and reached a height of 260 km (160 miles). Some of the missiles landed in waters as close as 300km (190 miles) to Japan’s north-west coast, Japan’s defence minister Tomomi Inada said in Tokyo. “The launches are clearly in violation of (UN) Security Council resolutions. It is an extremely dangerous

action,” Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, said in parliament, adding that “strong protests” had been lodged with nuclear-armed North Korea. Hwang Kyo-ahn, South Korea’s acting president, condemned the launches as a direct challenge to the international community and said the country would swiftly deploy a US anti-missile defence in the face of angry objections from China. The missiles were launched from the Tongchang-ri region near the North’s border with China, South Korean military spokesman Roh Jaecheon told a briefing. It was too early to say what the relatively low altitude indicated about the types of missiles, he added. “South Korea and the United States are conducting a close-up analysis, regarding further information,”

South Korea’s Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. The US military said it detected and tracked what it assessed was a North Korean missile launch, but it did not pose a threat to North America. North Korea had threatened to take “strong retaliatory measures” after South Korea and the United States began annual joint military drills on Wednesday that test their defensive readiness against possible aggression from the North. North Korea criticised the annual drills, calling them preparation for war. It has previously conducted missiles launches timed to coincide with the joint military exercises. Last year, North Korea fired a longrange rocket from Tongchang-ri that put an object into orbit.

a-z business directory Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Gravitymud is the latest trend!

That sensation of peeling a mask off is unbelievably satisfying - and thing I’d entirely forgotten before getting my hands on GLAMGLOW’s latest drop. Designed to tighten and firm, GRAVITYMUD FIRMING TREATMENT contains a host of algaes and polymers to firm skin along with kelp, hyaluronic acid and clay to soften, hydrate and generally give skin a boost. Oh - and it’s blue. Not blue of the retiring variety, but BLUE - boldly, unmissably so. I gave it a whirl this week, painting it on with the brush supplied and kicking back in the bath for 20 minutes while the mask dried. Next came the joyous moment of peeling, which was every little bit as satisfying as I remembered it being from my youth. Underneath all the blue was skin that felt undoubtedly softer and, on inspection, it seemed that the contours of my face looked slightly more pronounced. Time will tell on its long-term effects, but I’ll be using it as GLAMGLOW recommend - twice weekly, preevent. Do similar if you want your skin to look a little lifted and firmer. Gaggle of friends and Instagram snap optional.

Tips on having a vitamin B12 deficiency

Why do I need vitamin B12?

B12 is involved in producing red blood cells, maintaining a healthy nervous system, and converting food to energy. It also helps to regulate the immune system and mood, and control levels of the amino acid homocysteine, elevated levels of which are associated with heart disease. Most people who eat meat, fish, eggs and dairy products get enough B12. Vegans are advised to eat fortified food and take supplements. How much do I need? Adults need 1.5 micrograms (mcg) a day, the US National Institutes of Health advises 2.4mcg, and the European Food Safety Authority says 4mcg a day is adequate. The US and Europe, but not the UK, recommend higher levels for pregnant and breastfeeding women. A study published last year found one in 12 women aged between 19 and 39 were B12 deficient, despite consuming at least the UK recommended minimum intake. What are the symptoms and causes of B12 deficiency?

Symptoms include fatigue, faintness, headaches, pale skin, loss of appetite, weight loss, pins and needles and a sore, red tongue. One of the main causes is the autoimmune condition pernicious anaemia. Other causes are conditions affecting the stomach or small intestine, such as Crohn’s Are your knees swollen again? disease, operations such as gastrectomies (which No, I’m not wearing a bra! involve removal of part of the stomach), and Well don’t let them swing certain medications. go and see Carolyn! Am I likely to have B12 deficiency? Studies suggest the prevalence of deficiency in the UK is one in 10 people aged 75 and over, one in 20 aged 65-74, and lower in younger age groups – except for vegans, where prevalence is around 11%. However, some say these rates are based on deficiency thresholds that are set too low. The main test measures B12 circulating in blood serum. Doctors can also look for enlarged red blood cells. Newer tests are more precise but are not widely available. Experts disagree about how sensitive these tests are. “The blood tests are largely reliable,” says Catherine Collins, spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association. “There may be some people who fall within the normal range but need a little more B12, but I reject the idea that they need a lot more.” Dr Ayan Panja, a GP in St Albans with an interest in preventive medicine, disagrees.

“There is much d i s a g r e e m e n t around the validity of the tests among professionals. My view is that B12 deficiency is underdiagnosed, and can sometimes explain clusters of symptoms such as migraines, cramps, food digestion and sleep problems, dementia and depression.”

31^{length(s) - i - 1}*s[i] right) mod 2^{32}\] I can hear some of your saying “Well this isn’t simple maths!”, but the truth is that maths can be done by most 10 year old children. Let me explain. 1. Sum means ‘Add it all together’ 2. Mod means ‘The remainder after you divide 2 numbers (9 / 2 = 4 remainder ‘1’) 3. x^y means ‘Multiply x by x, y times’ eg. x=2, y=3, so multiply 2, 3 times (2 x 2 x 2 = 8) 4. Length is the length of the string (Length = ‘6’ characters) The rest is JAVA script coding on manipulating the results first to the right and then back to the left, and that is the only difficult part of it. So now you know about hashing. ‘Salting’ it the process of adding information to the password that is known but not easily accessible. For example, Every client \ customer has a unique ID and a name (015786 / Trevor Spencer). If this information is added to the password that you have created E.G. ‘Th151sMyP4s5w0rd’ + ‘015786’ + ‘Trevor Spencer’ and the Hashed result is stored, then the chances of anyone being able to crack it become far more remote! Finally, the hashing calculation displayed above is a simple one, it the same maths used to encrypt your emails and documents is used, then the chances of anyone being able to access your information go from ‘slim’ to ‘non-existent’. Until next time!

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk. Last week we touched on the subject of ‘Hashing’ which isn’t the skills of growing cannabis! This week I want to continue with the subject. First, what is the difference between ‘Hashing’ and ‘Encryption’ as both seem to be the same? When you encrypt a file, the contents of the file are changed in a way that allows you to use a ‘Key’ that will allow you to be able to change the contents back to it’s original, human readable form. When you ‘Hash’ a file (and a file can be a single word or a complete document!) the mathematics reduce the unique combination of letters (UPPER and lower case), numbers and punctuation to a single unique string of numbers and letters called a ‘Hash’. The unique feature of this process is that the Hash string is always the same length! This is good because the letter ‘A’ will produce a number the same length as this article will so it would be impossible to ‘Guess’ what the Hash represents. So how do we go about creating the maths? Well surprisingly the maths itself isn’t difficult even though some of the steps might appear that way. I simple calculation I found is: (s) = left(sum_{i in text{length}(s)}

Wild tulips have a vibrant charm

spring. And you can blend them with miniature narcissus violas, pansies or forget-me-nots. Some have decorative foliage. Greigii hybrids have chocolate stripes - lovely backing for the cream, red and yellow flowers.

Tulips are a stirring sight. But you’d never call them subtle. Little wild tulips, though, have a simpler and more endearing charm. There are roughly 100 wild species, of varying form and colour. And after centuries of cross-breeding - mainly by the Dutch - there’s an abundant choice of small hybrids, too. They’re often - scribed as botanical tulips. The bulbs are on sale now and should be planted as soon as possible. They give good garden value. If you’ve seen drifts flowering in the meadows of Central Asia, you’ll know what I mean. The earliest, green and cream

Tulipa turkestanica, can open in late February. Last to flower, Sprengeri, is scarlet until June. Most little tulips steadily increase - sometimes even self-seeding - to form colonies. They get by with little or no help and their aftermath dies away quickly, leaving uncluttered space for summer plants. PYJAMA STRIPES Botanical tulips are lovely in a rock garden or border front. I grow several in stony, sun-baked soil among drought-loving plants. The same varieties would also be suitable for pots or planters. Following on from crocuses, they extend the bulb season well into

The most popular stripe-leaved hybrid, T. g. Red Riding Hood, has scarlet blooms with black centres. And the multi-headed form ‘Toronto’ carries up to three bright salmon flowers per stem. Kaufmanniana, the waterlily tulip originating from Kazakhstan, has softer hues. Tulipa Heart’s Delight is a dream in dark pink. More startling Stresa is scarlet and yellow. In containers, use potting compost for bulbs. Plant them at two levels to increase flower power and, if you prefer them in a permanent bed, choose a sunny spot with freedraining soil. TURKISH DELIGHT There are superb wild tulips for borders or for naturalising. Turkish Sprengeri has small scarlet blooms on 25cm stems in early June. Given sun or semi-shade

and fertile soil, it can self seed to create gorgeous drifts. I discovered Orphanidea last year and love its tan-apricot outsides and orange interiors. I’ve planted it on a steep bank, where I hope it will naturalise. Botanical tulips need little attention after planting. Only a few seed freely, but most bulk up from sideshoots and a few produce runners enabling them to creep. READER’S QUESTION My hydrangea did not flower this year. It lives in a pot, and has been happy for the past ten years. What can I do to ensure it flowers next year? If you have kept it in the same pot all that time, it has likely become root-bound. Turning it out of the pot after so long could destroy both container and plant. Try giving it a little help to see if flowering resumes next summer. First, remove any aged, weakened or thin stems. In March, scrape away a layer of compost then scatter over slowrelease fertiliser. Top up with new potting compost and resume.

Question: My partner of 7 years (not married) has recently deceased and he had left me his house in his will. The house he has left me is the house where we lived and it has a value of 240,000 euro. I am being told that I will have to pay over 80,000 euro in inheritance tax. Surely this cannot be correct. Answer: This is unfortunately true. In Spain the inheritance tax is paid by the beneficiaries (not by the estate) and how much you pay depends on your relationship with the deceased. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are each entitled to receive up to 250,000 euro tax free (since 1st of January of 2017). (Residents of Andalucia or of an estate in Andalucia being received by a resident in another country of the European Union.) On the other hand if you are not married and are not family there are no exemptions whatsoever and to make things worse, after applying the sliding scale of inheritance tax rates, the final amount needs to be multiplied by two. In your case estate planning was as simple as getting married and you would have paid no inheritance tax whatsoever. As things are, I am afraid there is no way of avoiding the payment for over 80,000 euro that you mention. Michael Davies. Abogado. UK manufacturers enjoy post-Brexit surge in orders - survey

Britain’s factories are growing at their fastest pace in more than three years, helped by the fall in the value of the pound after the Brexit vote and a recovery in core markets in Europe, a survey showed on Monday. The survey, by manufacturing lobby group EEF and consultancy BDO, added to signs that British factories are enjoying a growth spurt, something that Brexit supporters said would be one of the early benefits of leaving

the European Union. However, many economists say the revival is unlikely to offset fully the impact on the economy of slower consumer spending as sterling’s fall pushes up inflation. Manufacturing accounts for about 10 percent of Britain’s economy. “The post-referendum wobble that defined UK manufacturing’s performance in the second half of 2016 has been left firmly behind with manufacturers now rallying far more strongly than even they

had predicted,” EEF chief economist Lee Hopley said. Last month, GKN (GKN.L) and Meggitt (MGGT.L), two British engineering firms, reported better than expected results and growing business orders. The survey by EEF and BDO showed output for manufacturers sped up sharply with the balance of firms reporting growth rising to 31 percent in the first quarter, its highest since the third quarter of 2013, when Britain was starting to cast off the after-effects of the global financial crisis. The balance of firms

expecting growth in the second quarter rose to 33 percent. Only a fifth of companies said they had not yet seen any pick-up in overseas markets while business confidence, investment and employment intentions all rallied. But prices are likely to rise further as manufacturers seek to eased pressure on their margins caused by the pound’s fall which makes their exports cheaper but the imports they use more expensive, the survey showed. The EEF raised its forecast for growth in the sector to 1.0 percent this year, from a previous estimate of a 0.2

The recovery in manufacturing has also been shown in official economic data. In the October-toDecember period of last year, factory output was up 1.2 percent from the previous three months, the strongest performance since the Brexit vote. Data for January, which is due to be published on Friday, is expected to show another increase in annual terms.

UK disability benefits post-referendum

The result of the referendum in the UK of June 2016 has created confusion and uncertainty for everyone and no less so for those living in Spain. What will happen to our healthcare, what will happen to our right to live and work here and also what will happen to our pensions are just some of the questions on people’s lips. There are also many people living in Spain who rely on the UK disability and sickness benefits they are paid to help them cover the additional costs of living with illness or disability. Since a CJEU decision in July 2011, first-time claims for Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) care component, Carer’s Allowance and now also the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) can be made by people living outside the UK in another EEA member state. There will doubtless be people who are thinking that their entitlement to these benefits may cease sooner or later and others who think that is not therefore worth making a claim. But, as with so much to do with Brexit, nothing is set in stone and it is not certain what will change or when. Even assuming article 50 is triggered in March, the UK remains part of the EU for at least a further two years and is therefore still bound by EU law which means that the rules currently in place remain for that period and guarantee the rights and entitlement to UK benefits for those living in Spain and other EEA member states. If the UK does then end up leaving the EU it is still not known how much of EU law will be incorporated into UK law and so nothing is yet known about how entitlement to benefits may change. At this point there is no reason not to make a claim and lose out on money you may need and which could be the difference between staying here and

returning to the UK. The difficulty in accessing support from social services in Spain means that people often have to fund their own help with domestic chores and personal care. Many who do not make claims for benefits end up having to return to the UK as they simply do not have the money needed to pay for these services. There are of course other reasons why people do not claim the benefits they are entitled to. A lack of knowledge of what is available or the rules of entitlement and failure to challenge negative DWP decisions means people miss out on what is rightfully theirs. Difficulty accessing forms, finding the nature of them overwhelming and wanting to avoid intrusive questions deter many even further. That coupled with feelings of pride and wanting to preserve their independence or not wanting to be a burden on the state often put others off. If you or someone you know is suffering from illness or disability then please give us a call so that we can advise you what you may be entitled to. The welfare benefits system is complex and at times confusing but misinformation put about by people who do not fully understand it will unfortunately mean that many could miss out on that extra income which proves so invaluable to those living with illness or disability. For up-to-date, in-depth and reliable information on what is out there for you, a family member or a friend please give us a call. We can take you through how you make a firsttime claim, ask for a review of an award and prepare you for and represent you at appeals tribunal. For more details on all the above please find contact details below.

pause for thought

When I first asked which side of the road to drive in Tanzania, I was told “Wherever there’s most space!” And they weren’t joking, for it proved a pretty good description, as although supposed to drive on the left, traffic regularly weaves all over the road as space and potholes dictate, even occasionally passing on the wrong side. Accustomed to this somewhat anarchic philosophy, I thought I was ready for anything, but this year discovered a whole new concept of “Dangerous Driving”. The Government recently opened a new Dual Carriageway near Kilimanjaro Airport to replace part of an existing, very busy arterial road linking two major cities. Totally misunderstanding the concept of Dual Carriageways, many Tanzanians saw this as two parallel alternatives, so use each carriageway as separate bidirectional roads! Utterly crazy; busses, trucks, taxis and cars driving at high speed in the wrong direction, often squeezing 3 lanes of traffic where 2 were intended and weaving lanes or even carriageways as potential benefit is considered possible – quite frightening when you first meet it whilst naively overtaking a string of trucks on what you thought was a normal Dual Carriageway! The result of such utter disregard for basic traffic rules is, of course,

absolute chaos, huge traffic jams and frequent carnage, justified by the standard smiling Tanzanian shrug accompanied by explanation that there was “plenty of space”; “rules are only advisory”; “best route for me” and “I didn’t hurt anyone”, or even “why shouldn’t I?”. But before we get too judgemental or condemning of selfish or thoughtless behaviour, we perhaps need to examine ourselves. How often we use similar excuses or explanations when we disregard God’s laws for controlling our personal inter-relationships? How much chaos and hurt can I cause others as I selfishly go my own way, because I can or because it suits my purposes? We need to remind ourselves that the rules of God’s Road are just as vital as our own Highway Code and the effect of disregarding them may be just as damaging. Enchanting Spain - out now

From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. He studied journalism, photography and archaeology at the University of Exeter and UCL. He shares his time between the UK and Spain. Patricia Díaz Pereda studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, and has worked as a television director and for a media publication. She is passionate about her homeland and has written many articles for magazines as well as contributing to Descubrir España, a National Geographic publication on the subject. She lives in Madrid. Great Food & Drink

Food Information

Real Minestrone Soup

Poke, pronounced both pokee and po-kay, is a lesser known Hawaiian favourite. This raw seafood salad, a cross between sushi and ceviche, is loved by both the locals and the haole (white folk) that come to stay. You can find fresh pre-made Poke at every fish counter in Hawaiian grocery stores and at seafood markets across the state. Locals often stop by the market several times a week for this quick and healthy lunch. I have to confess, we made it a goal to test every Poke Recipe we could find during our time in Hawaii, eating it nearly every day. We ate Ahi poke, octopus poke, crab poke, oyster poke, mussel poke and several other Hawaiian fish varieties. Our favourite, by far, was the Ahi

Poke. Rich, tender, sashimi grade Ahi tuna dressed with simple ingredients to allow the essence of the raw fish to shine. Ingredients: 2 large sashimi grade Ahi tuna steaks (about 1 1/2 pounds) 1 shallot, sliced (or Maui onions) 1/2 cup chopped green onion 3 tablespoons soy sauce (look for a gluten free brand) 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce 1 tablespoon sesame seeds Directions: Pat the Ahi tuna dry, then neatly cut it into small 1/2 inch cubes. Place in a bowl. Add the shallots, green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, and sesame seeds.

Gently toss. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate. *For another variation, omit the chili sauce and add 1/2 teaspoon wasabi paste and 1 teaspoon honey. You can also add a fresh avocado if you so desire!

Serves 8 2 red onions, 2 carrots, 2 celery sticks, 40g butter or pancetta, 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, Salt, 200g potatoes, peeled and diced, 300g other vegetables: fennel/ peas/ turnip/artichoke heart/ leek/pumpkin, 200g savoy cabbage or kale, 120g tinned plum or fresh tomatoes (around half a tin). A large parmesan rind 400g cooked cannellini beans First serving for 4. 150g short pasta, such a ditalini or mafalda, or rice, 2 tbsp grated parmesan, Second serving for 4, 4 slices toast, 2 tbsp grated parmesan.

1 Peel and dice the onion, carrot and celery. In a large, heavy-based pan, over a medium-low heat, gently fry these in the olive oil and butter (or pancetta) with a pinch of salt, stirring every now and then for about 8 minutes, or until soft and fragrant. 2 Meanwhile, peel and dice the potatoes, then add them to the pan, stir and cook for 5 minutes. Chop the other vegetables, shred the cabbage/kale, add all these to the pan and cook for another 5 minutes. Add the tinned tomatoes (resist the urge to put in more than half a tin) and parmesan rind, stir,

then add 2 litres of water, cover and leave to simmer gently for 1½ hours. 3 Add the beans. Stir and cook for another 30 minutes. If you find the minestrone is looking a little too thick, or dry, add a little more water. Once cooked, fish out the rind and season with salt and pepper. 4 To serve, two ways. On the first day, serve half the soup with some short pasta or rice cooked separately until al dente; maybe swirl in some grated parmesan. The second day, serve it over toast zig-zagged with olive oil and sprinkled with cheese. Serve with lots of crunchy crusty bread.

It’s official: the Samsung Galaxy S8 is being announced in full on March 29. Samsung has revealed as much in a new video teaser and invites it’s sent for the event. It’s happening in New York on that date, which lines up with previous rumours. The actual Galaxy S8 release date in stores is expected to be April 21, but you may be able to pre-order it from April 10. There’s typically a one-month lag time between the announcement of Samsung’s biggest phones and their actual shipping dates, so that part at least checks out. When it does launch we know that UK network EE will be stocking it, although as a major flagship we imagine almost every network will. If you have a Samsung Galaxy S6 on a two-year contract you’re going to want to hold on to it for a few more weeks instead of upgrading to the older Galaxy S7. There are phones like the LG G6 and BlackBerry KeyOne trying to tempt you away in the meantime. The later Samsung Galaxy S8 release date doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been delayed. It could be that the company wants to host a separate event or wait for the very latest specs to build the best phone possible. It’s also been taking extra time to focus on what caused the Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s flammable faults – an investigation which has now been completed. One thing we can say with some certainty is that whenever it launches, Samsung’s next phone will indeed be called the Galaxy S8, as Samsung has filed an application with the US patent office to protect exactly that. TechRadar’s take: The March 29 launch date is confirmed, and the April 21 release date makes sense since it’s nearly one month later.

More than 900 coins removed from turtle’s stomach in Thailand

Twenty-five-year-old green sea turtle nicknamed Bank swallowed money thrown into her pool by tourists seeking good luck Tossing coins into a fountain to bring good luck is a popular superstition, but the practice brought misery to a sea turtle in Thailand from which vets have removed 915 coins. Vets in Bangkok operated on Monday on the 25-yearold female green sea turtle nicknamed Bank, whose indigestible diet was the result of tourists seeking good fortune by tossing coins into her pool over many years in the eastern town of Sri Racha. Many Thais believe that throwing coins on turtles will bring longevity. But the coins eventually formed a 5kg ball in Bank’s stomach. The weight cracked her ventral shell, causing a life-threatening infection. Five surgeons from Chulalongkorn University’s veterinary faculty removed the coins over four hours while Bank was anesthetised. The ball was too big to take out through a 10cm incision, so it had to be removed a few coins at a time. Many of them had corroded or partially Dra. Travel INSIDERS LETS Travel

Casablanca has both the advantages and disadvantages of a typical large north African city and commercial capital. There are more than 3 million residents in the city, and it’s the largest port in North Africa. There’s lots of money here and plenty of places to spend it, but there’s also lots of poverty. Casablanca has high end boutiques, an upcoming contemporary arts scene, beautifully restored French colonial buildings, good markets and an authentic old part of town. The Corniche - Sometimes referred to as the “South Beach of Morocco”, or the “Blackpool of Morocco”, the Corniche is basically a boardwalk lined with restaurants and nightclubs. It’s where local folks go to relax and have fun.

VALENCIA Break Guide A decade of bold development has given Spain’s third-largest city some of the most striking architecture in the country, adding to the wealth of elegant art nouveau buildings that line the streets, as well as Gothic and Renaissance monuments. With dynamic museums, a flourishing restaurant scene, lively nightlife, great shops and miles of beach, Valencia is bursting with Mediterranean exuberance. Head for the Cathedral then have a stroll around the historic Carmen neighbourhood, where there are plenty of cafés and bars. Gawp at the fabulous fruit, vegetables and fish at the art nouveau Central Market then drop into La Lonja, the 15th-century silk exchange. Have a look around the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences and don’t miss the Oceanogràfic aquarium. See the animals at the Bioparc and the paintings by leading Spanish artists at the Museo de Bellas Artes and make sure you have a paella at one of the restaurants by the beach.

Motoring Roundup

2017 CAA Ladies & Men’s Pairs Finals

The first year of this competition has been very difficult to arrange to play the Finals. The competition started 27th November for the Men and 1st December for Ladies. The bad weather in December prevented the final to take places and subsequently because of other fixtures it was hard to find a date. It was eventually played on 10th February, thanks to Chris Ivin and the Ladies Charity team kindly moving their fixture date. Both Men and Ladies put forward eleven teams with John Fitzgerald and Bryan Thompson (ALBC) winning the Men’s over Alan DeBoer (John Dedman. (Indalo) In the Ladies Mo DeBoer and Doreen Hall (Indalo) over Sylvia Pritchard and Pat Deacon Men’s Final This was expected to be a close game with the excellent quality of play in the early rounds from all finalists. This was to be John Fitzgerald and Bryan Thompsons day as they never let Alan DeBoer and John Dedman get started. There was a mini fight back when John and Bryan couldn’t get off score of 10 for five ends with Alan and John

fighting back only to be two shots behind. John and Bryan then started pressurising again and in the end winning comfortably. Ladies Final This was an epic final with all finalists playing extremely good bowls. There was nothing in it for eight ends with the score at seventh end, 6-5, to Mo DeBoer and Doreen Hall against Sylvia Pritchard and Pat Deacon. Mo and Doreen continued to increase their score with Sylvia and Pat fighting hard to be level on thirteenth end at 10-10. Unfortunately, Sylvia and Pat couldn’t get off the score of 10 for the next 5 ends with the score at 16-10 for Mo and Doreen on the seventeenth end, Sylvia and Pat then needing 6 shots on the eighteenth end to make a play off. Lots of excitement as they nearly did it, winning five shots thus Mo and Doreen taking the Championship. After the competition, Tony Lear thanked all for taking part and the markers and umpires throughout and the presented the trophy to the winners Vic Parsons CAA Press Secretary

19th Hole Golf Society, Match Report

On Thursday 2nd March the 19th Hole Golf Society travelled to Lorca to play a 4 ball Texas Scramble, a format very popular with the members. With nine teams of almost perfectly combined balanced handicaps (thanks to the patience and skill of Mike Esposito our competitions secretary) a close result was expected. But as always, in golf and elections, it is almost impossible to predict the outcome. Team Mike and Karyn Esposito, Zeta Denyer and Paco Ocaña Grajal slaughtered the opposition taking just 52.2 strokes and scoring 9 birdies with no bogeys on what is a demanding course. Good to see Alan Brigden collecting a Nearest the Pin back playing after a short break. Result. 4 Ball Texas Scramble

Lionel Messi and Neymar scored three spectacular goals to keep Barcelona atop the Spanish league after routing Celta Vigo 5-0 on Saturday. The flashes of brilliance from Barcelona’s best may give pause to anyone who thinks Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-0 cushion is surely insurmountable come Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League tie. The intimidating display also comes in the first match since coach Luis Enrique announced he would leave the club at the end of the season. “It didn’t serve as a warm-up for PSG as far as how they play, but confidence is basic in these types of situations,” Luis Enrique said. Besides two goals, Messi also contributed to setting up second-half strikes by Ivan Rakitic and Samuel Umtiti, dealing a stinging win to a good Celta side which has beaten Barcelona and Real Madrid this season.

carried on as bravely as he could for the rest of the fight, but was unable to move freely as Bellew seized the momentum. And in the 11th, a second knockdown saw former heavyweight champion Haye tangled in the ropes, the towel enter from his corner and his hopes of a return to the world-title level of the sport left in tatters.

said Murray. “It’s been a good start to the year.” Murray went into the final with a 12-1 record against Verdasco, but the Scot made a slow start to the final, losing his first two service games and throwing in four double faults. However, Murray managed to get himself level at 3-3 and was rarely troubled again. Verdasco, 33, let a 40-0 lead slip in game eight, firing a forehand wide on break point and Murray served out a set in which his returning ability

had made up for some erratic serving. The Briton’s game came together in the second set and a forehand pass gave him the early break for a 2-1 lead. When Murray ran down a seemingly hopeless point to force another break point at 4-2 it was as good as over for Verdasco. The final proved a far more straightforward contest than his quarter-final against Philipp Kohlschreiber, which saw Murray save seven match points and win an epic 31-minute tie-break.

Kop That!!! Liverpool secured a vital advantage over Arsenal in the battle for a place in the Premier League’s top four. Arsene Wenger gambled by leaving Alexis Sanchez - his leading scorer on the bench but the ploy failed miserably as Liverpool took control by the break. Roberto Firmino’s far-post finish put Liverpool ahead after nine minutes and Sadio Mane confirmed their superiority with an emphatic strike just before half-time.

Sanchez, predictably, emerged as a substitute at the start of the second half and set up a goal for Danny Welbeck that gave Arsenal hope but Georginio Wijnaldum struck deep into injurytime to seal Liverpool’s win.

Rory stands by round with Donald Trump

Rory McIlroy admitted he was surprised at the criticism he received for his round with Donald Trump, but stands by his decision to play golf with the US President. McIlroy was criticised on social media earlier this month for accepting Trump’s invitation to play 18 holes at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. “I was just doing what I felt was respectful,” McIlroy said. “When the President of the United States phones you up and wants to play golf with you, I wasn’t going to say no! “I don’t

agree with everything that he says, but it is what it is. I’m not an American and I can’t change the way the political system is there. The 45th President of the United States owns several courses around the world, including Trump National Doral Miami - the venue replaced by Club de Golf Chapultepec for this week’s tournament. “We talked golf the entire day and I think he was happier to talk about golf than to talk about anything else he has to do these days!” McIlroy said.

Zlat´s wait on referee’s report

Zlatan Ibrahimovic apologised for a ‘bad day’ that will prove even more costly should the Manchester United striker face retrospective Football Association action. The 35-year-old was making headlines for the wrong reasons on Saturday after ugly clashes and wasting the chance to turn a 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth into a much-needed Premier League win. Ibrahimovic’s penalty was saved by the impressive Artur Boruc and the striker could have been sent off after catching Tyrone Mings with an elbow.

Benzema at the double

ONE-SHOT VICTORY

Dustin Johnson consolidated his position at the top of the world rankings as he held off a strong European challenge to clinch a one-shot victory at the WGC-Mexico Championship. Johnson was four shots clear of the field early on the back nine at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Naucalpan before back-toback bogeys opened the door for the likes of Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Ross Fisher, but the American held his nerve down the stretch to collect his fourth World Golf Championship title. Fleetwood won the race for second by holing a huge putt for birdie on the final green.

SECOND GOLD

No Cristiano Ronaldo, no Gareth Bale, but no problem for Real Madrid as they enjoyed a afternoon stroll thanks to Karim Benzema’s double. Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane rolled the dice again with his selection, resting a host of first team regulars ahead of a Champions League trip to Napoli. However, the Frenchman’s bet on the depth of his squad came in as Benzema slotted home Marco Asensio’s cross at the second attempt after just 14 minutes. Benzema turned home James Rodriguez’s brilliantly delivered free-kick for the second 11 minutes later. The roles were then reversed as the Colombian slid in to slot Benzema’s low cross into the far corner. Asensio made it four after James had hit the post before Ruben Pena grabbed a consolation for the hosts. Barcelona report inside.

England seal series win!!!

Britain’s Laura Muir and Asha Philip won gold at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade. Muir, 23, gained her second gold of the championships with victory in the 3,000m on Sunday following her 1500m win the previous day. The Scot eased away from the rest of the field to break the championship record in eight minutes 35.68 seconds. Philip, 26, set a new British record to win the women’s 60m final in a time of 7.06 seconds.

England survived a mid-innings wobble to beat West Indies by four wickets in the second one-day international and win the series with a match to spare. Liam Plunkett took 3-32 as West Indies, despite 50 from Jason Mohammed, were bowled out for 225 in 47.5 overs. Jason Roy (52) put England on top but home spinners Ashley Nurse (3-34) and Devendra Bishoo (2-43) hit back. However, Joe Root (90) and Chris Woakes (68) put on an unbeaten 102 to see England home with 10 balls left. Batsmen needed to play patiently on a slow wicket at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium - the same one used in the first match on Friday - but only new Test captain Root and all-rounder Woakes really mastered the conditions.
