But a new OECD report notes a downward trend in small businesses folding in recent months A going-out-of-business sale in Madrid. A going-out-of-business sale in Madrid. /Carlos Rosillo The economic recovery in Spain is an observable fact, but the country has yet to fully bounce back from the effects of the crisis. A persistently high unemployment rate is one sign. And the high bankruptcy levels among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) is another. Business creation is also far from pre-crisis levels in Spain, according to the new report A new report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that nearly four times as many companies with 250 or fewer employees went under in 2015 as did in 2007. “Bankruptcy rates in 2015 were below pre-crisis levels in the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, Brazil and South Africa,” says the report. “By contrast, they were significantly higher in Austria, France, the Netherlands and Norway, and were over double their pre-crisis rates in Italy and nearly four times as high in Spain, although recent quarteron-quarter trends point strongly downwards in both countries.” Business creation is also far from pre-crisis levels. In Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the United

States this creation is somewhere between a fifth and a third of what it used to be in 2007. Spanish entrepreneurs are less optimistic than others about their future hiring prospects. Spanish entrepreneurs are less optimistic than others about their future hiring prospects. The report, which has been published annually for a decade, includes a new survey conducted in partnership with the World Bank and Facebook, regarding perceptions about the current state and future outlook of the firm and of the economy in general. The survey, which was conducted among companies with a Facebook account, found that nearly half of companies with 50 or more employees and between 10% and 20% of companies in G7 countries are planning to increase jobs in the coming six months. In the case of Spain, the outlook is more pessimistic, especially among companies with 50 and more workers. Only Japanese entrepreneurs had similarly negative feelings about the future. However, younger SMEs were more optimistic than the older ones about their hiring prospects. elpais

FUNDRAISER FOR MAZ’S CANINE RESCUE

Maz Bailey of Maz’s Canine Rescue works tirelessly to save abused and abandoned dogs, funding the rescue from her pension and donations from supporters. At her kennels in Tijola she currently cares for approximately 110 dogs. With the ever increasing bills for rent, kennel staff (it would be impossible for Maz to clean all those kennels alone!), food and veterinary care, funds are always needed. A fundraising event was held on 24th September at El Teatro in Piedra Amarilla. The event was kindly sponsored by Ibex insurance. It was well attended with just over 100 people there. Great entertainment was provided by Smooth FM’s DJ Jack Savage and singers Geoff Thomas, Louise Thomas and Dave Henry, all of whom had donated their time to support the event. There was a

An amazing total of 1758€ was raised. It was fabulous to see so many people support the event and donate so generously to the amount raised.

All of the money raised will now go to help with the running of the kennels. Some has already been spent at the vets, and will help to pay for some much needed vaccines to keep the dogs healthy and safe. From myself, Maz, and the 110 dogs at the kennels, a big thank to everyone who supported this event.

Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in medicine. The Karolinska Institute honoured Ohsumi for "brilliant experiments" in the 1990s on autophagy, the machinery with which cells recycle their content. Disrupted autophagy has been linked to various diseases including Parkinson's, diabetes and cancer, the institute said. Though the concept has been known for more than 50 years, its "fundamental importance in physiology and medicine was only recognised after Yoshinori Ohsumi's paradigm-shifting research in the 1990s", Karolinska said in its citation. Ohsumi was born in 1945 in Fukuoka, Japan. He is currently a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. It was the 107th award in the medicine category since the first Nobel Prizes were handed out in 1905. Last year's prize was shared by three scientists who developed treatments for malaria and other tropical diseases. The announcements for this year's awards continue with physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. The economics and literature awards will be announced next week. Each prize is worth about £720,000. Ohsumi said he was "extremely

honoured" to have received the prize. When asked during a live phone interview with Japanese broadcaster NHK why autophagy became his project, Ohsumi said that "I wanted to do something different from other people. I thought auto-decomposition was going to be an interesting topic". Nobel judges often award discoveries made decades ago, to make sure they have stood the test of time. "Thanks to Ohsumi and others following in his footsteps, we now know that autophagy controls important physiological functions where cellular components need to be degraded and recycled," the Karolinska Institute added. "Intense research is now ongoing to develop drugs that can target autophagy in various diseases." AP

ALBAIDA INFRAESTRUCTURAS S.A. WINS CONTRACT TO DEMOLISH THE PLAZA NUEVA IN MOJÁCAR

Albaida Infraestructuras S.A. will be responsible for the demolition of a building and the construction of a suppor t for Mojácar’s new Plaza Nueva af ter having been chosen by a panel formed by the local council. The tender dossier was approved at the ex traordinar y plenar y session in August. Seven construction companies submit ted sealed bids for the work. Albaida Infraestructuras was chosen as, among other considerations, they presented the most economically advantageous tender. The panel was constituted under the chairmanship of the Mayor of Mojácar, Rosmari Cano. It was made up of Councillors Agustin Montoya Perez, Diego Garcia Montoya and Ana Maria Garcia (responsible for Works, Ser vices and Education respectively), Lucas John Mayo (spokesman for the Union Mojaquera) and Manuel Zamora (spokesman for the PSOE Socialist Group). Also present were the Municipal Technical Architect, the Technical Architect of the Province of Almería, the Town Hall Secretar y and the Municipal Financial Controller. Af ter the submit ted sealed envelopes were opened, the administrative documentation was

examined by the panel. Albaida Infraestructuras, SA, presented a statement of compliance that met all the prerequisites required by the first paragraph of Ar ticle 146 of the Consolidated Law on Public Sector Contracts and, was awarded the contract with a budget of 1,026,312.13 Euros (including VAT). Construction will begin in early October and should end in March. The draf ting team has planned the timing of the work to perfection so that the Plaza Nueva will be ready and available for Easter. Access to the village is guaranteed at all times as the Town Council has already planned alternative routes (such as Avenida de Encamp) that can be transformed into t wo way traf fic by the use of traf fic lights. Any necessar y traf fic cuts will be carried out in coordination with the local police and with minimal interference to tourism. The first phase of the work will be to proceed with the demolition of the existing building and the construction of a structure that will suppor t the new Plaza Nueva Mirador.

ANIMAL-LOVERS FORCE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE OVER SHARP IVA HIKE ON VETERINARY CARE

A MASSIVE hike in IVA on veterinary drugs and products is due for debate in Parliament tomorrow (Tuesday, October 4) thanks to ongoing pressure from animal charities, activists and vets themselves, who claim more pets are abandoned or left to suffer as a result. IVA on veterinary treatment and products used to be in the middle bracket, which was 8% - compared with 4% for the lowest and 18% standard – until September 2012, when the standard level went up to 21% and the middle bracket to 10%. The cost of veterinary treatment for livestock remained in the middle level, although went up from 8% to 10%, but for all other animals including pets, it shifted to the higher band, meaning an overnight hike from 8% to 21%. Vet bills have since soared, since these were historically cheaper in Spain than in, for example, the UK and surgeries were unable to absorb the tax hike without running at a loss. And as a result, they are struggling to make ends meet anyway, since animal owners are less likely to take their pets for treatment or check-ups due to the inflated cost. Animal charities say the collateral effect has been four years of fewer dogs and cats spayed or neutered, more animals abandoned, fewer being given necessary vaccinations, and fewer illnesses treated. With an estimated 48% of Spanish households being home to at least one animal, the number of people and pets who are affected by the IVA hike is significant. Once, animal-lovers who found an abandoned dog or cat in the street would take them to their nearest vet to check over and treat for any ailments, before either keeping them, searching for a home or looking for a shelter with space – but vets have now noticed a decline in this altruistic practice, even though animal-dumping rates have soared. The Parliamentary Association in Defence of Animals (APDDA), made up of MPs and Senators have drawn up a non-legislative proposal to drop veterinary treatment into the middle IVA band, down to 10%. The 21% IVA is applied to so-called 'luxury goods and services', and APDDA argues that pets' health is not a luxury, but a necessity. Two MPs spearheading the

campaign, Ester Capella and Joan Capdevila – the latter being a vet by profession himself – speak of the 'dramatic increase' in animals being abandoned or neglected and the 'consequent ethical, social and humanitarian costs'. According to a survey by the Affinity Foundation in 2015, a total of 12% of animals were abandoned for financial reasons, and another 14.5% because of unwanted litters – which could have been prevented by sterilising, although this comes at a significant cost. Capdevila says in 2013, according to data from the researchers Veterindustria, the number of animals taken for vet appointments went down by 6.3% - within just one year of the IVA hike, meaning the percentage may be even higher as time has worn on The veterinary industry is the only one which is not taxed in the same way as other health sector professions, APDDA recalls. Then there is the public health aspect, Capdevila says: the IVA rise has led to 'a fall in preventive treatments' for controlling 'infectious illnesses and parasites', which put the human population at risk in the case of conditions which are transferrable. “The application of an IVA reduction to 10% would only lead to a fall in State income of 0.000011%, but which would be compensated for multiple times over by the benefits it brings,” APDDA insists. And, in fact, the income from IVA for the State may be higher, because more pet-owners will have their animals treated, sterilised, vaccinated and given parasite medication. The Observatory for Justice for and Defence of Animals is just one major organisation which has set up a petition on Change.org for IVA to be lowered on veterinary treatment. They point out that more and more regional and local governments are becoming animal-aware and making it a legal requirement for pet-owners to treat their dogs and cats when they are ill, which goes against the government's decision to increase the costs of doing so. Their petition has now attracted nearly 227,000 signatures. thinkspain

CALLERS CLAIM TO HAVE SEEN DIANA QUER IN LUGO, 200 KILOMETRES FROM HER HOLIDAY HOME

NUMEROUS phone calls claiming to have seen missing sixthformer Diana Quer in the city of Lugo, southern Galicia, are being followed up. Diana, 18, vanished when returning to her family holiday home in A Pobra do Caramiñal (A Coruña province, Galicia) at 02.30 on the morning of August 22, and is said to have got into a car – possibly a black Audi. Her mobile phone battery went off at around 04.15, prior to which it is thought to have been thrown off a bridge near Taragoña into the river Arousa, some 20 kilometres from where she disappeared. The case remains sub judice, which is not helping to curb speculation, given that she and her younger sister Valeria, 16, apparently have a very turbulent relationship with their mother which has led to Valeria's father being given custody of her. Both girls are believed to have been suffering mental illnesses, with Valeria getting regular panic attacks and self-harming, and Diana having a history of anorexia and having been prescribed strong tranquillisers. Even a kidnap for ransom has not been ruled out, given that the girls – whose parents are divorced

– live in Spain's wealthiest town, Pozuelo de Alarcón in the Greater Madrid region, and their father is a property and motor industry tycoon. But this appears unlikely, since in the last month and a half no demand for money has been made. Now, however, a 'significant number' of calls to the police in the north-western region of Galicia, where Diana and her family had spent every summer on the coast since she was three, have been made by members of the public claiming to have seen the young woman in Lugo. The land-locked city and provincial capital lies around 200 kilometres north-northeast of A Pobra, and one sighting places the missing student in the suburb of A Milagrosa. Calls claiming to have seen Diana in Lugo were received from as far apart as Castroverde, about 15 kilometres east of Lugo, and Pedrafita do Cebreiro, some 45 kilometres south-east of the city. Guardia Civil officers in the province of Lugo are preparing a report to hand to the investigation team in that of A Coruña. thinkspain

PSOE CRISIS: PEDRO SÁNCHEZ QUITS

PEDRO Sánchez has resigned as leader of the PSOE and the party will now be run by an administrator until a new secretary-general is appointed. In a show of hands at the Federal Committee a meeting called on Saturday, Sánchez's proposal of calling an extraordinary general meeting was shot down with 132

votes against and just 107 in favour. His proposed meeting was to allow the paid-up subscribers to decide upon who should be their leader, and whether the PSOE should attempt to form an alternative government to the right-wing PP which remains, de facto, in power following two failed general elections in which it lost its majority. “The emergency congress was to

decide both of these issues, and I continue to believe that it should be the paid-up members who decide them – but there's still time,” Sánchez said in his leaving speech. It was the subscribers who elected Sánchez as leader, and a significant proportion of them are not happy with what they consider to be an inhouse coup based upon Sánchez's adamant refusal to support PP leader Mariano Rajoy in his bid to become president – a stance they also largely supported. Sánchez said being PSOE leader has been 'an honour' and 'a source of pride' and that he 'wishes all the success in the world' to whoever succeeds him, stressing that he and other leavers would 'serve the new secretary-general loyally'. He had warned on Friday that if the bulk of the party wanted to back its direct rivals, the PP, he would stand down as he 'could not lead up a decision he did not agree with'. Sánchez has not said whether he would stand for election in the next primaries, or in-house leader voting, where the subscribers who chose him initially would be expected to select another. As yet, who will take over from Sánchez is little more than speculation. The outgoing leader has gone from being on the verge of realising his career dream to seeing his world shatter around him in the space of less than six months – after the first general election in December, when Rajoy turned down King Felipe

VI's nomination for him to form a government and the monarch named Sánchez instead, the PSOE leader looked set to become president of Spain. He entered into talks with left-wing independents Podemos, Spain's third-largest political force, and centre-right Ciudadanos, the fourthlargest, in a bid to form a coalition with the PSOE's 90 seats and block the PP with its 123. But striking a deal with Ciudadanos meant Podemos voted against Sánchez in the presidential investiture and forced Spain to a second general election. Cynics believed Podemos' 'no' vote was tactical, to force a second election in the misguided belief it would surpass the PSOE in votes and win power itself. Sánchez and his supporters say if the country ends up with another PP government, it will be thanks to its political polar opposite, Podemos, blocking a 'government of change'. thinkspain

Budget airline Monarch has received a temporary 12 day extension to its licence to sell package holidays. The company said it had secured additional funds from shareholders and was close to announcing its biggest ever investment. The news came just ahead of a midnight deadline for the renewal of its Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) licence. Following much media interest in the future of the company, last weekend Monarch was forced to deny ‘negative speculation’ about its financial health. In a statement on Saturday, a Monarch spokesman said that all flights over the weekend were flying as normal; the company operates around 130-140 outbound and inbound flights a day, three of those routes are to Almeria, from Dublin, Manchester and London Gatwick. For the last ten days, passengers had been expressing concern on social media sites about whether all those flights would take place. There are more than 100,000 Monarch holidaymakers overseas at the moment. In the last twelve months, the company has struggled under intense competition and a fall in demand for holidays, especially in Turkey and Egypt. The airline employs about 2,800 staff and is based at Luton Airport. The 12-day reprieve has been welcomed by Brian Strutton, general secretary of the pilots' union Balpa, who said the uncertainty surrounding the airline had been lifted, saying, "It is good news for the pilots, crew, ground staff and customers". He added, "Although the Monarch licence has been extended temporarily, my understanding is this will be sufficient to satisfy the regulator that long-term funding is secure and details of this will emerge over the

next few days." Monarch is protected by the CAA's Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (Atol) scheme - a scheme which refunds customers if a travel firm collapses, and ensures they are not stranded abroad. But, for the licence to be renewed, allowing Monarch to continue to sell package holidays, the company had to prove it was financially sound. Monarch has been majority owned by Greybull Capital since 2014, when the investment firm bought a 90% stake in the airline. Earlier this year they bought 140 M Local convenience stores from Morrison’s, which subsequently went into administration. Greybull has now put extra funds into the airline, enabling the CAA to grant an extension to the airline's licence until 12th October. By that time, Monarch is confident it will have secured, quote, “the largest investment in its 48-year history". Chief executive Andrew Swaffield said he was excited about the additional capital coming into the group which he said, “will help us fund our future growth". In its statement, the CAA said it was able to extend the licence by requiring the major shareholder to provide additional funding and thus ensuring customers’ money will be protected. The statement continued by saying, "Monarch now has 12 days to satisfy the CAA that the group is able to meet the requirements

for a full Atol licence. Monarch will remain Atol licensed until this extension expires. The CAA always advises consumers to ensure they book Atol-protected air holidays and consumers who choose to book an Atol-protected flight or holiday with the company during this time will continue to be protected by the Atol scheme." Monarch says Atol offers consumers security where a flight and accommodation have been booked together and also on some flights booked separately and applies in certain other circumstances. Speaking at the weekend, a former managing director of Monarch, Tim Jeans, said the company had been having difficulties for some time and that they certainly have to come up with the money and the investment to satisfy the CAA in those 12 days, otherwise the future will look bleak. Monarch is a much smaller and less agile operation than the giants of low-cost aviation, Ryanair and Easyjet. The fall in sterling means many of Monarch's costs, such as the leases on its aircraft and the fuel in its tanks, are much more expensive and there is generally a weakness in demand for its holidays. The next 12 days may prove to be an uneasy time for holiday-makers with existing bookings and of course may deter others from buying holidays, adding to the current financial problems. It can only be hoped the reassurances the company has given turn out to be true.

El Refugio - Almeria City Many people know Almeria City just for it;s airport; whether on the red eye from Gatwick or via another UK route, many arrive only to scuttle off to their homes or holiday destinations without wondering about what else is on offer. The City has a beautiful old quarter with excellent restaurants, tapas bars, art galleries and museums. Stunning architecture abounds, topped by the Moorish Alcazaba towering above. The Paseo de Almeria is a broad tree lined boulevard; running from the port to Plaza Purchena it’s filled with chain stores and boutiques. It’s the commercial hub of the city with some curious black news stand kiosks dotted along the way. Another world however lies hidden the surface as each kiosk dotted along the paths has a trap door leading 3 metres or deeper below ground. DEUTSCHE BANK DEFENDED BY GERMAN FIRMS

Leading German firms have rushed to defend Deutsche Bank amid concerns over the troubled lender's financial health. Executives from Siemens, Daimler, Munich Re and BASF told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung they backed the bank. "We stand with Deutsche Bank," BASF chairman Juergen Hambrecht said. Deutsche Bank is facing a $14bn ($11bn) fine in the US for mis-selling mortgagebacked bonds before the financial crisis of 2008. Its shares fell sharply last week on fears the fine could cripple the bank, at one point dropping to their lowest level in 30 years. Reinsurance giant Munich Re's chief executive, Nikolaus von Bomhard, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that he had followed the news, but saw no need to "reduce our business volume" with Deutsche Bank. Dieter Zetsche, the chief executive of luxury car firm Daimler, also backed the bank, saying: "Deutsche Bank has a great tradition, a solid foundation and beyond that, a good future ahead. Of that I am convinced." Siemens boss Joe Kaeser

said that the bank's management "is pursuing the right goals and has our fullest confidence". On Friday, Deutsche chief executive John Cryan insisted the bank's finances were strong, telling staff in an email that the lender had become the object of "hefty speculation" and that "new rumours" were causing the share price to fall. Reports have also suggested the bank could be close to reaching a deal over a much lower fine of $5.4bn, boosting the shares. Mr Cryan will attend this week's annual International Monetary Fund meeting held in Washington where he is expected to try and negotiate a deal with the Department of Justice over the fine. Last week, the German government also denied reports that it was preparing a rescue plan for the bank Germany's biggest lender - in case it could not afford to pay the US fine. While Deutsche is a relatively small bank globally, it has significant trading relationships with all of the world's largest finance houses. In June, the IMF identified it as a bigger potential risk to the wider financial system than any other global bank. bbc.com

can be seen. Here the story unfolds firstly via a short film, interviews with now elderly locals tell the story of how when the Civil War erupted in 1936, the city council along with help from the Republican Government set about designing and constructing an air raid shelter large enough to hold 40,000 people. During the war; German, Italian and Nationalists conducted 52 bombing raids, the most devastating of which killed 40, injured 150 and destroyed 200 buildings. The original staircase leads visitors down beneath the glass building to a passageway some 1.3 metres wide with a bench running along one side. Supposedly there were 101 of these exits but only 67 have been discovered. The passageway is one of many feeder passages into the main tunnel that extends the whole length of the Paseo de Almeria; the main tunnel is 2m wide with benches each side and extends about a kilometre towards the port. Originally they were dirt floors with smoking prohibited.

A generator provided light and there was a system for pumping clean air in. Directly beneath the city market is a much deeper section that served as food store, in case of a prolonged bombardment supplies could easily be moved below. Along with street entrances there were also entrances in private homes and churches. A black flag was put outside for easy recognition. The designer of the tunnels; architect William Rubio had one such entrance at his home for the public, plus he built an extra gallery so his family had some private space. Other wealthy families did the same. When Malaga fell to the fascists in 1937, 50,000 refugees fled on foot towards Almeria. The German Luftwaffe or Condor Legion practiced their strafing techniques shooting at the unarmed civilians killing and injuring hundreds of them. In response Almeria then built another section

containing an operating theatre which can still be seen today. After the Civil War ended in 1939, the tunnels remained open in case Spain was drawn into WWII. Then in 1945 the entrances were sealed with some entrances covered by the aforementioned kiosks. In 2001they were rediscovered by accident during the construction of an underground car park. The city started renovations aiming to open in time for the Mediterranean games in 2005. Instead they opened the next year in 2006, being now the City’s third most popular tourist attraction. Booking is advisable as due to space constraints only a maximum of 25 people are allowed on each of the 4 daily tours. Or try your luck, as we did and just turn up!

complexity of the buying process may persuade them to delay or put them off buying their first home. In addition, 44% cited concerns over hidden and additional costs as a point that could put off or delay them from buying a house, 22% expressed concerns over the responsibility of owning a house and a fifth were put off by having to deal with estate agents. As many as 15% feel that they don’t have time to look into home buying properly. ‘Home ownership has always been a great British aspiration but these statistics demonstrate the challenge first time buyer’s face in making that dream a reality. Whilst prices remain very high, it is clear that this isn’t the only hurdle,’ said Simon McCulloch, director of comparethemarket.com. ‘The whole buying process is intimidating, particularly to first time buyers. Fears around hidden fees, dealing with estate agents, lawyers, surveyors and mortgage companies are real and strong enough to put off people from trying to make a purchase,’ he added. The site has launched a new First Time Buyer’s Guide which it hopes will help those trying to make sense of the system. propertywire.com

Banks in Spain may be left with no alternative but to cut the price of repossessed Spanish homes on their books in order to attract more buyers, as part of the Bank of Spain’s plans to force banks to reduce their real estate exposure. From 1 October, Spanish banks will be required to increase provisions against their repossessed property portfolios and real estate divisions, with the regulator planning to increase their property sales rates, which they can only do by lowering prices. “If the banks are forced to increase their write-offs, that gives them more room to lower prices,” said Mark Stucklin at Spanish Property Insight. The Spain property market, which finally now appears to be on the long road to recovery, has endured a torrid time since the 2008 crash in the housing market, with residential property prices plummeting, largely as a consequence of a chronic oversupply of Spanish properties. Spanish banks now own hundreds of thousands of homes in Spain, after accepting properties from struggling Spanish property developers who would have otherwise faced bankruptcy. “The troubled real estate exposure of Spanish banks has risen every year since the crisis started, despite huge writeoffs each year, rising to a total of €84bn (£72.7bn) at the end of 2015,” Stucklin added. propertyinvestortoday.co.uk

Over 5.5 million British people think that they will never be able to own a home due to rising prices and the cost of saving for a deposit to get on the housing ladder, new research suggests. Some 33% of those who do not own a home believe they will never do so and 39% of potential first time buyers think they will have to rely on financial support from family to be able to buy a property. The survey from online comparison site comparethemarket.com also found that the number thinking they will never own a home rises to 65% amongst 45 to 54 year olds, suggesting that a large cross section of British people have given up on the hope of home ownership. Of those who expect to be able to afford a place of their own at some point in the future, some 36% think that they will have to partially rely on their family for financial support to purchase a house, whilst 3% said that they will rely entirely on their family. The survey report says that these statistics highlight the importance of family financing for first time buyers today. The lengthy process of buying a home also seems to be putting off many who would want to purchase a house with 39% of respondents who expect to be able to afford a home at some point said that the

Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platform Landbay has launched a new comparison tool that will help tenants and landlords to compare their rents against the prevailing market rate as rental values continue to spiral. The ‘Rent Check’ facility, which has launched today (Monday), utilises data from the P2P lender’s monthly rental index and allows users to compare rental movements for specific property types to check that rents are tracking the wider market. Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at the London-based FinTech firm John Goodall, said that he hoped the new service would provide assurance to renters that they were paying a fair rate in the current climate of low home ownership and low interest rates. He said: "The UK is in the midst of a housing crisis

and a severe supply/demand imbalance, meaning the rental property market is buoyant. "Together, Landbay’s Rental Index and the Rent Check tool will give both tenants and landlords a simple way of accessing data from across the UK, not only providing an in depth view of the market, but helping inform their next move." It comes after the FinTech business, which allows users to investment in property via its P2P lending platform, launched a P2P lending solution with Zoopla Property Group last week. Zoopla invested £500k in the startup earlier in the year which guaranteed it exclusivity for new Landbay products that will be rolled out across its network of property websites Zoopla and PrimeLocation.com. bdaily.co.uk

BARCELONA IS SECOND CITY IN WORLD WHERE TOURISTS CONTRIBUTE MOST TO ECONOMY

Mastercard has just published the latest iteration of their Global Destination Cities index. The report reveals a wealth of information about international travel and the contributions that travellers make to international hubs around the world. Perhaps the most interesting dataset provided by Mastercard shows what tourists to key cities actually contribute financially. The study reveals the top global destinations by visitor expenditure per city resident; in essence it shows just how much visitors contribute to the local economy in comparison to locals. Of these top destinations Dubai is far and away the winner. The research suggests that visitors spend an

average of $4,668. It is important to mention here if that number sounds fantastical that there are a number of factors that can affect this figure.

Firstly, one should remember that many visitors to Dubai make the most of the opportunities that present themselves and stay in one of Dubai’s enviable collection of world-class hotels. This, of course, inflates the sum of money that many people spend the UAE. Furthermore it should be remembered that Dubai has a relatively small resident population; in the Emirates as a whole expats and visitors outnumber locals by 8 to 1. As a result this metric will naturally be rather higher than for destination cities more densely populated with

locals. However Dubai is far from the only city to benefit handsomely from overnight visitors. Second in the rankings comes Barcelona (spend = $2,793), closely followed by both London and Singapore. This data really helps to underline the money that international travel can bring into major worldwide hubs, leaving a lasting positive impression on the local economy. It is also interesting to note which cities are growing fastest in terms of overnight visitors. Here Colombo takes the crown. This sprawling metropolis in Sri Lanka has long held an important strategic position along the East-West trade routes. Following closely behind in terms of growth in Chengdu in Southwest

China, with Abu Dhabi coming in third. Once again we see just how the UAE is becoming a critical international air travel hub, not just growing in visitor numbers but also drawing in great wealth from the expats and travellers who pass through. However while these cities may be the fastest growing, they aren’t the largest. As it turns out it is London which comes in top, with an astonishing 18.82 million international visitors expected this year. This is only slightly ahead of the runner-up, Bangkok, with 18.24m visitors. Paris, long one of the most visited cities in the world clocks in at number three. http://www.tumbit.com/

CATALONIA AND BARCELONA

Catalonia and Barcelona has become one of the first tourist destination of Spain, it knows how to please the big majority : with a history among the oldest in Europe, a capital, Barcelona, which never sleeps and an inland full of charm not to forget beautiful beaches in La Costa Brava. The variety of artistic treasures, the Romanesque churches and the great names in modern art and architecture , Dali, Gaudi, Miro, Picasso ... Barcelona sited between the sea and the mountains, has found a formidable balance: a foot in the traditional things and the other in the avant-garde. Barcelona has the reputation of being the most cosmopolitan, modern and avant-garde city in Spain and it has renewed for the 1992 Olympic Games. WHILE IN BARCELONA TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO VISIT CATALONIA LIKE: COSTA BRAVA owes its name of "wild coast" to the uniqueness of the sudden encounter between mountain and sea. Nature, climate and history, the picturesque of its ports and certain villages have been enough to have a world wide reputation. The Costa Brava is a 160-kilometre stretch of beautiful, rugged coastline in the region of Catalonia in the North East corner of Spain. Natural beauty, endless miles of sandy beaches and summer sunshine. You’ll find modern, international tourist resorts with high-rise hotels alongside unspoilt fishing villages, sheltered rocky coves and medieval towns with ancient castles. The Costa stretches from Blanes, North of Barcelona, to Roses near the French border. It has 4 regions: L’Alt Empordá, Baix Empordá, La Selva and Girones. Blanes, a harbour on the Costa Brava, the Wild Coast, at the border of the province of Barcelona, marks the beginning of the most light-filled part of the Costa Brava. The Costa Brava is formed by a lot of little towns and small fishing ports like Cadaqués, which was the residence of Salvador Dalí. Calella de Palafrugell where

you can listen to the famous habaneras in a festival celebrated once a year. In the 200 kilometres we will find little Mediterranean towns like L’Escala, Palamos or Sant Feliu de Guixols. You can visit the Parc natural de Cap de Creus or the Parc Natural Aiguamolls in L’Empordà, the Illes Medes in L’Estartit, the city of Roses and Empuries, the medieval cities like Pals and Peratallada, the ancient city of Tossa de Mar and the beautiful botanic gardens in Blanes and Lloret de Mar. Marvellous beaches and many other entertainments will fill your time in the Costa Brava with an average annual temperature of 17º Celsius, moderate rain and 2500 sunny hours every year.

COSTA DORADA , in the south of Barcelona, it is the colour of gold, luminous, being in the maritime littoral the reason of its name "Costa Dorada" (Golden Coast). La Costa Dorada (Daurada in Catalan) The 20 towns that make up the Costa Dorada cover a marine littoral 216 kilometres long, 786 hectares of spacious beaches with clean fine sand and transparent shallow water. In between the sea and the mountain range there are wide areas filled with peaceful towns and farmlands, where vineyards, olive groves, carobs, hazel trees and almond trees grow, and occasionally even vegetable gardens. The whole area, between; hotels, camping sites and apartments, has capacity for over 500,000 tourists, and receives an average 3,500,000 visitors per year. The large tourist centres along the beaches of the Costa Dorada have developed in recent times upon the old fisherman’s quarters in old towns mainly dedicated to agriculture, and sometimes located atop the hills near the sea in order to protect themselves from attacks by corsairs and pirates in earlier centuries. http://www.barcelona.com/

QUESTION: I jointly own a property in Spain with somebody I no longer get on with and he refuses to sell and split the funds. What can I do? ANSWER: The best option would be to jointly sell or for one to buy the other one out. In Spain there is a special deed which is used to do this and allows the person acquiring the half to pay tax of 1.5% of the total value of the property, as opposed to the normal transfer tax of 8% on that half. If the other party refuses to go along and be reasonable we can force the issue. There is a special court procedure to deal with this. Our experience shows

that as soon as the other party realises that we can indeed force the issue using the courts, they tend to agree to settle the case, very often in favourable conditions to our clients. Typical scenario: A couple purchases a property in Spain in joint names. The relationship deteriorates. The economically weak partner will wish to sell and the other party claims that he/she will only pay a ridiculously low amount for the other half, and that he will not accept any different. The necessity of money sometimes leads the weak partner to accept an unreasonable settlement due to the urgency for money.

It also hit its lowest level against the dollar since the beginning of July. On Sunday, the prime minister said she would trigger Article 50, the clause needed to start the process, by the end of March 2017. That means the UK is likely to leave the EU by mid-2019. In early morning trade, the pound fell by about 1% against the euro to €1.1433 before recovering slightly. It was also down 1% against the dollar at $1.2854 at one point, its lowest since 6 July, when it hit $1.2797. Mrs May's announcement had "unsurprisingly, been bad news for the pound", said Connor Campbell, Spreadex financial analyst. "Sterling has been spooked by May's promise to trigger the dreaded Article 50 by the end of March 2017." However, the currency had been particularly unsettled by the prospect of the UK leaving the EU single market, he said. "The PM, in a move to appease the more rabid members of the Tory party but one that is set to cause revolt from the backbenchers, has signalled that curbing immigration is the top Brexit priority even if it comes into conflict with Britain remaining in the single market," Mr Campbell added. "Combine all this volatility together and the pound has been left at its worst price since the start of July." While the pound fell, share prices rose, with the FTSE 100 up by more than 1% in late morning trading. "A slump in sterling made life easier for UK markets, with price action so far this morning seeing high-quality international firms receiving a receiving a flood of buyers," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trader, IG. The FTSE fell sharply in the immediate aftermath of the referendum, but has subsequently recovered and is up nearly 10%, because listed international-facing firms have benefited from the fall in sterling. After the pound fell sharply at first on Monday, it then recovered some ground after a closely watched survey of the manufacturing sector indicated it grew at the fastest pace for two years in September. "Another rise in the UK's manufacturing PMI helped sterling to recover some of its losses, and while the move this morning has garnered plenty of attention it is a pale imitation of the action seen in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote," Mr Beauchamp added. ¡BUENOS DÍAS ALQUERIA!

Radio Alqueria is once more preparing to assault the airwaves. Jammed and forced to close down by an electronic countermeasures unit of the Spanish army two years ago, the station is now servicing its generator and polishing its lecher lines in readiness for its return. The station is to field a host of well known names including Pulsating Pedro the controversial DJ from Ollantaytambo, Peru. He is known for his rapid repartee and his ability to geld lamas with his teeth. Unfortunately after years of exposure to the beasts he has, by some strange mechanism acquired their aroma. He is universally avoided in the hot confines of the studio where he has been known to steam. Banned from the station is El Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido, the Village priest. As an Existentialist his ministrations have the potential to cause mass depression on a scale greater than a wet Sunday in Bolton. To avoid any chance of lemming like behaviour the most cheerful person in Alqueria was given the task of presenting ‘Thought for Today’, unfortunately this is Loco Paco. The signing of Miguel Pez the well-known meteorologist was a particular triumph for the Radio Station. However funding only ran to one analysis. So the same weather report is broadcast three times a day, seven days a week, Winter and Summer. No one seems to mind however. It does

beg the question though, does anyone actually listen to Radio Alqueria? The first day of broadcasting started with a children’s programme. Everyone knew it was a children’s programme from the mass hysteria and screams. Some badly prepared, patronising fairy tale was dished up to the poor little souls. A survey later showed that the only person listening was Amalia Vega. She thought it was real and reported the existence of a man eating, or rather little girl in red eating Eurasian Wolf to the Guardia Civil. Today in Parliament was a masterpiece and consisted of a badly recorded episode of the Goon Show. Most listeners thought Alquerian politics were coming along in leaps and bounds. Some even commented that they were now on a par with Westminster. Sport was dominated by Rodriquez and his Abyssinian Goat Shirling. This received many complaints as the process of ‘shirling’ was misinterpreted by many and led to Rodriquez having to sign a sex offenders register. The highlight of the day’s broadcasting was undoubtedly ‘Manuela On Toast’. It wasn’t as the womenfolk, producers and censors thought a culinary programme. It was thirty minutes of Manuela at her most bawdy and inventive. Many are waiting for the screen play while other hopefuls are demanding audience participation. The first day of transmission finished with Loco Paco’s ‘Thought for Today’, it was deeply disturbing.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk Wednesday the 28that 4.30.’ Just to make sure I’d got it I repeated it back to him, emphasising the September bit. He couldn’t have been nicer to a stupid old person! But he obviously didn’t completely trust me. Today –Tuesday 27th, the mobile rang. It was a lady who announced that she was from Torrecárdenas Hospital. She enunciated clearly ‘You have an appointment tomorrow...’ I cut in, ‘Tomorrow, Wednesday 28th at 4.30 to start my radiotherapy.’ ‘Sí, that is correct.’ Obviously she had been told to ‘ring that stupid old English person, and make sure she’s got it right this time.’ So now we are in accord, nobody has lost their temper and Anglo/ Spanish relations are undamaged - apart from my loss of dignity and having to consume a large serving of Humble Pie. Move over, all you Village Idiots. Make room for the new recruit!

THE VILLAGE IDIOT

The lady phoning me from Torrecárdens Hospital was quite distinct – I have an appointment with the Consulta on Wednesday 26 October at 10.00. Fine, I’ve got that. A different lady phoning me from the same place a couple of weeks later was also quite distinct – You have an appointment to start your radiotherapy at 4.30 on the 26th. ‘What?’ I queried, ‘I have an appointment with the Consulta on the 26th? Is it the same day?’ ‘Sí, the 26th.’ She repeated. OK, I thought, that’s going to be a long day! But at least being in October it gives me time to sort things out before I quit the human race for 6 weeks. Last Monday at 5.30 the phone rang. A patient male voice asked ‘Cho-se-feen, why have you not kept you appointment to start your radiotherapy?’ ‘Because it’s not until Wednesday the 26th.’. ‘Today is the 26th.’ ‘But it’s Monday!’ ‘Yes, Monday 26thSeptember. Wednesday is the 28th.’ I looked at the wall calendar. Sure enough, today was the 26th. It had never occurred to me that I might have the wrong month. The dawn of enlightenment began to spread slowly through my mind. It wasn’t a long journey. ‘Oh,’ I said lamely. I decided Pathetic mixed with a large portion of Contrite was the best approach. ‘I’m so sorry, it is my mistake, I’ve got the wrong month. I thought my appointment was in October. Please don’t be cross with me, I’m a stupid old person.’ It worked. He laughed. ‘Don’t worry,’ he said comfortingly. ‘Come on

Roast Cod with Paella & Saffron Olive Oil

Function Room Available Puerto Rey

Pour in 600ml of the stock, season and mix well to combine. Cover and put in the oven for 15 mins. Uncover, give everything a good stir, then return to the oven for 10 mins. When almost cooked, remove from the oven and spread onto a tray to cool. Chill and reserve for later. You can make this a day ahead. To make the saffron oil, whisk the olive oil and lemon juice together in a small saucepan. Add the saffron and heat gently for 5 mins, then remove from the heat and leave to infuse and cool. You can make this a day ahead.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE PAELLA 1 tbsp olive oil 200g raw chorizo, diced 3 large shallots, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp smoked sweet paprika (pimenton) 300g paella rice 1l fish stock knob of unsalted butter 300g prawns, chopped into bitesized pieces handful cooked, shelled mussels, plus 18 in their shells juice ½ lemon (optional) small bunch parsley, chopped

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. For the cod, put the olive oil and butter in an ovenproof frying pan over a high heat, but don’t let it burn. Season the cod with sea salt and black pepper, then cook, skin-side down, in the hot pan, for 4 mins, then carefully turn the fish over and put the pan in the oven for a further 3 mins, finishing with a little more sea salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. Meanwhile, put the paella back in the pan, stir in the remaining fish stock and cook for 2 mins until completely heated through. Stir through a knob of butter, the prawns and shelled mussels. Taste, season with lemon juice, salt and pepper if necessary, and finish with the chopped parsley. Serve with the roast cod, mussels in their shells and steamed purple broccoli or a green vegetable, if you like. Finally, drizzle everything with the saffron dressing.

October 2016

STRICTLY WEEK 2 With yet another action packed show all fifteen celebrities took to the floor displaying their talents. As nobody was eliminated last week their scores were added to this week. Opening the show this week were Ore Oduba and Joanne with their Cha Cha Cha. I found this to be nice and sharp but the Cha Cha action was too staccato with the basic not driven into the floor enough giving a weak basic action. I gave him 6 and the judges a total of 27 and a combination of 54. Following were Claudia Fragapane and AJ and a Waltz. For such a tiny little thing, this was a very elegant Waltz. As a gymnast she showed perfect core lift and frame and moved beautifully across the floor. I gave her 8 and the judges 32 (58). Next to perform were Will Young and Karen with a Jive. This was not a bad attempt but Will was very flat footed leaving the jive looking very heavy. Nor were the kicks and flicks light enough. A little disappointing and I gave him 5 with the judges a total of 27 (57). Lesley Joseph and Anton were next to dance with a Cha Cha Cha. For her age a dance with great characterisation as only the actors seem able to bring out. She has great legs but unfortunately her upper body stoop spoils the overall look. I gave her 5 and the judges 26 (49). Athlete Greg Rutherford and Natalie then danced a Tango. I can't believe that an athlete can be so flat footed and twine toed! Coupled with his bottom sticking out and a jack-knife position, despite his intensity and concentration there is a lot of work on technique needed. Again I awarded a 5 and judges 26 (53) Eastenders Tameka Empson and Gorka were

the first this year to perform a Charleston. Great interpretation and energy but lacking a little more foot swivel for the true action. I awarded 7 and the judges 29 (55). Laura Whitmore and Giovanni were next to dance a Waltz. A nice elegant Waltz with good movement across the floor and good characterisation. For me she was leaning a little too far back instead of cradling into her partners arms. A 7 from me and the judges 32 (57) Next to dance were Melvin Odoom and Janette with a Tango. He tried hard but I'm afraid for me a very weak link. He was not lowered sufficiently into his knees to gain staccato action and was very ploddy throughout. I awarded just 4 and the judges 23 (45) Louise Redknapp and Kevin then danced a Viennese Waltz. Despite a few 'lumpy' moments, this was an elegant fluid performance with beautiful transitions and fluid arms. I gave her 8 and the judges 32 (63). Anastacia and Brendan then danced a Salsa. Unfortunately she sustained an injury and some of the choreography had to be changed on the day. Being a Latino Anastacia has the feel for salsa, but due to the injury this was sadly lacking. From the way she was dancing it looked like a back injury and I hope she will be OK to continue. I gave her 5 and the judges 22 (50). Ed Balls and Katia were next to perform a Charleston. Yet again much better than I had anticipated showing great characterisation and high energy throughout. It was just a pity there was no Charleston foot swivel in evidence. I gave him 6 and the judges 23 (44). Naga Munchetty and Pasha then danced a Cha Cha Cha.

Oh dear! she looked totally lost with a performance peppered with errors. A totally wooden performance! definitely not her dance. I gave her 3 and the judges 23 (46). Next to dance were Judge Rinder and Oksana and an American Smooth. Enthusiasm abounded yet again from the judge although I doubt you would see Fred Astaire with his mouth open like a goldfish! His Foxtrot needed more attention to detail particularly footwork but some great lift work. I awarded him 7 with the judges 27 (52). Daisy Lowe and Aljaz then performed a Cha Cha Cha. Being top of the leaderboard after last week I was waiting to see if someone so tall could control those limbs in the Latin section and I have to say she did! She had a great leg action but unfortunately stopped the movement reaching her hips. Nevertheless a great first Latin dance. I awarded her 7 and the judges 30 (62). Closing the show this week were Danny Mac and Oti and a Viennese Waltz. Yet again Wow Wow Wow! Just requiring a little tweaking with his arms this was another superb performance with beautiful lines and extensions. Fabulous! I awarded him 8 and the judges 32 (63). So with a tie for first place between Danny Mac and Louise Redknapp and the bottom 2 being Ed Balls and Naga Munchetty, we had to wait until Sunday evening for the public bottom 2 and the dreaded dance off. For me it would be Naga to leave but the public had Anastacia and Melvin in the bottom two but this week minus the dance off because of Anastacia's injury. Melvin left the show as the lowest public vote. I can't wait until next week but if you want to join us in the fun come to one of our dance classes and keep up with the strictly gossip.

Until then Keep Dancing! By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635 584 431

THE “CHILD PAINTER OF MÁLAGA” OFFICIALLY DIES TODAY AFTER 29 YEARS MISSING David Guerrero Guevara, who disappeared in Málaga 29 years ago at the age of 14, will officially die today (Sept 28). A court in the southern city is scheduled to hold a session to have Guerrero officially declared deceased. Nobody has heard anything from him since he left his home on April 6, 1987. Known popularly as “the child painter of Málaga,” because of his talent for art, Guerrero has technically been alive all this time because no death certificate was ever issued. David’s father died in October 2015, and surviving relatives have been unable to receive their share of the inheritance because the missing boy – who would be 43 today – is legally still one of the heirs. This situation has forced the family to request that David be formally declared dead, nearly 30 years after his disappearance. Under Spanish Civil Code rules, David’s mother will state her request, followed by statements from other relatives. A report will be issued, and the missing person will be officially recognized as being deceased. Information about the Wednesday session was made public ahead of time, in case anybody had any new leads as to David Guerrero’s fate or whereabouts. But nobody came forward, and the clues that once led investigators to Switzerland and Portugal came to nothing long ago. David Guerrero Guevara was an introverted teen and an excellent painter for his age. A few days before going missing he had been thrilled to hear the news that a prestigious art gallery in Málaga, La Maison, wanted one of his paintings to hang in a collective exhibition about Easter. He did not go to the art gallery, as he had told his mother he would David painted a “Christ of the Good Death” and attended the gallery opening. Relatives said he seemed “very happy.” On April 6, 1987, David went to school. His teachers did not notice anything amiss,

although a classmate recalled that David had complained about a headache and stomach cramps, and had said he would not eat his sandwich lunch. Back home, at 6pm, David refused to eat the sandwich once more, a fact that surprised his mother. Instead he had a yogurt, then picked up a bag containing his art material, his bus pass and his school card. He walked out of the house, never to return. He did not go to the art gallery, as he had told his mother he would. He did not show up for his art class, either. The mystery is officially being laid to rest with him on Wednesday. Elpais.com

You Can (and Should) Feng Shui Your Garden

Feng shui is defined as “a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (chi), and whose favourable or unfavourable effects are taken into account Help make your garden a calming and when siting and designing buildings.” relaxing place that can aide your wellbeing Applying this concept to the design of our gardens can optimize the space to help and spiritual calm. make them calming and relaxing places that

can aide our wellbeing and spiritual calm. We asked the team at Pottery Barn for their expert tips on how we can go about embracing this idea. First of all, you must segment your garden according to orientation, as is shown in this infographic ... North This area of your garden is focused primarily on energies related to your path in life, including your career. Combining rock and water in the north of your space can create a peaceful neighbour for a zen garden. A bird bath or water feature can add both sound and wildlife to your outdoor space. Darker colours, such as deep blue or black, are important here – ornaments such as frogs, fish and turtles are a great addition to the mix of your garden.

THE MISSING BY C.L.TAYLOR

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“He looks so broken, so contrite, so deeply ashamed that my heart twists in my chest. One of my sons is missing and the other is falling apart in front of my eyes. I have never felt so powerless or so impotent in my life.” Be prepared to be shaken out of your comfort zone. Fractured families, a spectrum of emotions; fear, anger, guilt and loss. This is serious stuff and this is what Cally Taylor excels at. The plot is chilling and the truth devastating and the characters are believable throughout. No matter how well we think we know our family and friends that can change with discoveries of mind-numbing secrets that could explode in our faces, leaving us scarred for life. Ask Claire Wilkinson. Claire Wilkinson is the main character, narrating most of the account. Taylor informs us: “I wanted to explore what would happen when Claire, a control freak by nature, realized she no longer knew the son she’d nurtured for so many years. I wanted to see how she’d react when her family began to fall apart.” It sounds cruel especially when we understand what she has suffered and once the secrets unravel, we see the family disintegrate before her eyes. Taylor presents a parent’s worst nightmare-the disappearance of a child with all the guilt that causes a vulnerable family to fall apart, to make gripping reading. We have a two-time frame, going back a year interspersed with the present. The beginning has a contemporary style using Whatsapp conversation or text talk between two anonymous characters going back to the 5th February 2015. Jackdaw44 and ICE9. The former sets a maudlin tone: “Would you rather drown in a river or burn in a fire?” I know what my answer would be. Neither. To be asked if you would cry at his funeral seems rather morbid doesn’t it? An intriguing start. This text talk continues throughout to show

disillusioned people, grossly unhappy with their lives. It’s up to you to work out the connection with the main plot. It is now the 5th August 2015 and we are made aware of the second tv appeal for the Wilkinsons, Claire and husband, Mark. The golden boy, Jake, 19 still lives at home with his parents and girlfriend Kira who moved into the family home 18 months ago to escape from her own fractured family: an alcoholic mother who was physically and verbally abusive and living with the memory of a father who committed suicide. This appeal is more low-key after Billy’s disappearance six months earlier. It takes place in a small conference room in the basement of the town hall with just half a dozen journalists and photographers present. D.S.Forbes has advised Claire to make the appeal because the public tend to respond more favourably to a mother’s loss. We soon learn that her youngest son, Billy, 15, skived school and was proving to be rebellious and challenging at home as well as at school. He was a master of graffiti leaving his trademark DStroy wherever he went. He craved infamy. “His disappearance has left a hole in our family that nothing can fill.” Claire is hopeful at the start of the novel that Billy will return and that everything can go back to being normal. Too much wishful thinking. However, the appeal did not turn out well and there were negative comments in the press, disturbing and alarming: “They seem like a perfectly normal family but you have to wonder whether someone knows more about Billy’s disappearance than they’re letting on.” For Claire, the stress and guilt prove too much and she suffers frequent blackouts, waking up in strange places creating confusion and anxiety. Taylor’s interest in abnormal psychology is explored here. She calls them fugues or dissociative amnesia, dark and foggy thoughts. She finds herself in Weston Super Mare during

one of these blackouts, a lost and frightened soul. As she says: “There’s a black void where my memory should be.” Despondent. Impotent. Claire singlehandedly goes off searching for her son, frequenting dangerous places with drop-outs:”I can’t just sit at home doing nothing. I’ve started to see him everywhere I go.” Images of a body slumped on the bonnet of her car, a thumping sound as it hits the car, a loud crack and then being showered with glass. Claire hallucinates as she sees his lifeless body believing that she might have killed him. D.S.Forbes drops a bombshell one day; Jason Davies has confessed to abducting Billy and murdering him. He confessed this to his cellmate. It is now left for the police to investigate and discover the truth. A devastating setback naturally. Claire agrees to see a psychotherapist to deal with her fugues. She admits to Sonia that her worst fear is that someone she knows hurt Billy. Her main suspect is her husband Mark and finding out some of his dark secrets seems to justify her suspicions. Would Mark hurt even kill Billy, his own son? Finding a family photo album hidden in the garage with Mark’s face blacked out disturbed her. Who would do this? Who hated Mark? Had Billy done this? We discover more disturbing revelations from Jake culminating in a disturbing text that Claire discovers accidentally:”I know you were sleeping with Billy. I know you were responsible for his disappearance. And so do the police.” The text is sent, but who is the recipient and will Claire discover what happened to her son? Is Billy alive or has he been murdered? “No-one does broken families and friendships like Cally Taylor and “The Missing” is no exception.” Sarah Hilary. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. Publisher: Avon-a division of Harper Collins. ISBN: 13: 978-0-00-811805-1.

UAL’S MOTOSTUDENT RACER TESTED AT CIRCUITO DE ALMERIA

Circuito de Almeria in Tabernas was the venue for the first test of the University of Almeria’s (UAL) entry for the Motostudent Competition. The MotostudentCompetiton is open to universities worldwide. A team of students are tasked in designing and developing a racing motorcycle parallel with the Moto3 class specifications, all within a set budget. Participating universities are given a sealed,6 speed, single cylinder 250cc Honda engine as used in the CBR 250R. Aside from safety components like brakes, suspension, and wheels, the team are free to design, fabricate and test the individual items and insure that they meet regulations as well as giving optimum performance. True to the spirit of Motostudent, UAL’s tester and rider Pablo happens to be the fabricator/welder of the team. One of the components he is most proud of is the under seat, mid-mounted fuel tank which also serves as the rear bodywork/seat support. The frame is a steel trellis design which was chosen for its rigidity and light weight. Amazingly it only weighs 11 kilos and coupled with the fact that it uses the engine as a stressed member means that it can handle the immense forces of braking and cornering easily. Ducati has been using this design for years so it’s a proven and tested design in motorcycles. The testing at Circuito de Almeria understandably started very cautiously. No one wanted to damage the race bike by rushing things and making a school boy (pun intended) mistake with the preparations. No one was more nervous than Pablo. The responsibility of testing the brand new engine, different oneoff components, but at the same time, ensuring that he and the machine returned safely after each 30 minute session in the near 30 degree heat could be seen on his face. Two years of hard work converges on this day and it would have been

37

a disaster if a crash ended their day early. As he entered the pit garage after each session, he had barely enough time to remove his helmet and undo the zip on his racing leathers to cool off when he would be surrounded by excited team members all wanting to know all the seat- of –the- pants information that he could offer. A little tweak here, a change of a psi on the tyre pressures there, a safety check then measuring the fuel used, refuelled and it was ready for the next session. It was impressive to see a group of “students” acting like a professional team of Motogp mechanics. Each had their respective responsibility and executed them like clockwork. Maybe not a Swiss clock, not yet anyway, but clockwork nevertheless. The race on Sunday October 9 at Motorland Aragon promises to be an exciting event. Imagine a group of students from around the world who have dedicated most of their university and free time over the last two years to design and make a racing motorcycle and now anxiously waiting to see if all their hard work, sweat and yes, blood from scraped knuckles, all congregating in one place. You could probably feel the ground vibrating with all the “Christian Horner” foot tapping, leg shaking and nail biting going on between participants. If the hard work, determination and professionalism shown by UAL’s Motostudent Team is anything to go by, I can pretty much predict that by Sunday evening, a lot of proud and relieved students heartily celebrating their achievements in what is surely a unique competition. Mark Porter

MOJCACAR TAEKWONDO CLUB

We are very proud, as a Taekwondo Club, to see that Mojácar is more than ice-creams and beach bars. It is also, for some, a possibility to train hard towards their new belt, and the recognition that they are getting better, faster and more powerful. The Summer Grading took place in Mojácar under the supervision of the Black Belt instructors Serge Dewrée and Laura Linschoten. There has been a lot of sweat and some tears during the very fierce combats, sometimes painful board breaking and nerve wrecking technical patterns. Each and every student gave 100% and got their well-deserved belt Trophies for "excellent students" were granted to Melissa and Nicole in the 4 to 8 y.o. group and to Maite in the 8-14 y.o. group. Medals were given for their perseverance to Sophia, Maite, Mila, Talia and Osaïa. The trophy to "best patterns" went to Sophia, with excellent technical skills and almost faultless knowledge of the Korean vocabulary and the trophy to "best fighter" went to Osaïa, who showed us that she is not only a champion in Kite Surfing but also a very dedicated Martial Artist.

Well done to all of the students at the Mojacar Taekwondo Club. Next grading will take place in December with more Taekwondo students going for their next belt and maybe have a shot at the "Heart Trophy" for the Student of the Year.

DURHAM RELEGATED TO DIVISION TWO AFTER FINANCIAL ISSUES AS HAMPSHIRE ARE REINSTATED

For more information, come and see us at the Indigo Gym on Mojácar Playa monday 7.30pm - 9.00pm, wednesday 4.00pm - 5.00pm and 5.00 pm - 6.30pm, friday 4.30pm - 5.30pm and 5.30 pm -7.00pm or call Serge on 646 844 708

Durham have been relegated from Division One in the County Championship over financial issues, with Hampshire being reinstated. The North East county have also lost the right to stage Test cricket at their Riverside ground. Durham have accepted a £3.8m financial aid package, which has been approved by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). They will start next season in Division Two with a 48-point deduction. Durham will also face a four-point penalty in the 2017 T20 Blast and a two-point deduction in the OneDay Cup. Additionally, the club will be subject to a revised salary cap from April 2017-2020, with the level determined annually by the ECB board. All prize money from ECB competitions, except that for player awards, will be withheld until the club's debt to the national governing body is cleared. "The financial package and

associated conditions approved by the ECB board reflect the unprecedented seriousness of Durham County Cricket Club's financial situation," said ECB chief executive Tom Harrison. "To help them through these difficulties and continue as a first-class county, this had to be addressed with immediate, practical financial assistance." The Riverside first hosted international cricket in 1999, when Scotland played Pakistan in a oneday international. In all, six Tests, 16 one-dayers and three T20 internationals have been staged at the ground. A Durham spokesman said the club's board welcomed the ECB's "long-term commitment to safeguarding first-class cricket in the North East". Kent, who finished second behind Essex in Division Two, had argued they should be promoted instead of Hampshire being reprieved from relegation, but that was rejected by the ECB. Bbc.com

The format is a knockout of any Mixed Fours, Men Pairs, Ladies Pairs and Singles. Three of the local Almeria bowling clubs hosted the games. There was an excellent turn out of bowlers entering the Championships, Mixed Four’s (39), Ladies Pairs (33), Men’s Pairs (42), Ladies Singles(52) and Men’s Singles (72). The huge amount of work putting this together was principle done by Dave Sewell, Competition Secretary and Ruth Compton, ably backed up by the rest of the committee and the generousness support of the clubs. The Opening Ceremony at Indalo bowling club on the Friday 23rdwas a huge success attended by invited dignitaries, most of the competition players available, Indalo, helped to make the event the success it was by playing host to the Opening of the Championships and treating all to Paella and Cava. David Horton, Indalo President welcomed all and on behalf of the other participating clubs handed over the greens to the FAB Delegada, Ruth Compton. Ruth then after thanking the president welcomed all guests, fellow bowlers, to the 2016 Andalucian Championship. Individual thanks then were given to the organising committee which without their hard work all this would not be possible. She continued with thanks to other clubs for use of their greens, to John Sephton Vice President of CAUMA for organising the many umpires and markers required for the competition week, to David Sewell who took on the hard job of Competition Secretary at the last minute and who put together very concise schedules of disciplines and where they would be

played. Rightly so thanks were given to the sponsors who gave support, particularly Quentin Seller of Blacktower Financial Services the main sponsor, also to Kevin of the Leaderand publisher of the Bowls Espana magazine who printed the Championship brochure for us, and to Jill Cooper of Indalo bowling club who put many hours of hard work bringing this competition to the attention of local advertisers and the sponsors. Ruth then introduced the FAB President, Jose Miguel Nieto Ojeda who was accompanied by his wife Paqui to say few words with the help of Carlos Alman translating. He echoed all the thanks above and the bowled the first bowl to declare the 2016 Andalusian Competition Open. Dave Sewell the competition secretary burnt the midnight oil rearranging dates and games sending out updates to keep all informed. All the clubs involved shared the running of the different disciplines over the week reporting results to David each evening. The quality and professionalism of the players and club back-up was superb throughout the week. We always like a feel good story and on Tuesday 27th that was provided, two ‘Hot Shots’ at Indalo B.C. the Indalo team, Dennis Leigh, Chris Ivin, Linda and Keith Lester in the fours achieved a hot-shot, (All eight bowls holding winning shots) the latter couple celebrating their 50th Anniversary. ‘Was it a first in the Andalucian Championships? No, it wasn’t, as later there was another, John Warn and Bill Davies from Malaga got an eight on end fouteen having lost a seven on end ten.

SHARAPOVA HEARING SET FOR TUESDAY

Maria Sharapova will find out on Tuesday if her two-year doping ban will be overturned, says the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The five-time Grand Slam winner, 29, was banned by the International Tennis Federation after testing positive for meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open. The Russian, who said she had been taking the drug since 2006 for health problems, appealed against the ban. She maintains she had “not tried to use a performance-enhancing substance”. In a statement, Cas said its decision would be announced at 14:00 BST on Tuesday. Meldonium became a banned substance on 1 January 2016.
