Weekend warmth only temporary, says AEMET
Last weekend’s warmer climes are ‘not an indication that summer has started’ and are a mere ‘respite’ from the cooler temperatures, rain and wind seen throughout the month of May, says the met office. In the south, the Mediterranean belt and in Madrid, the mercury has crept just above 20ºC between last Thursday and Sunday but by Thursday, turbulent conditions are due back on the mainland. Only the Canary Islands and the Guadalquivir valley in the Sevilla area have seen temperatures of 30ºC or more. From the middle of this week, temperatures
will fall again and skies will be overcast with possible showers throughout the mainland and the Balearic Islands, and especially in the north and inland, says the State meteorological agency, AEMET. But this will not be the same ‘unseasonable cold weather’ seen during May, says AEMET – it is ‘a different dynamic’ and ‘a turbulence more appropriate to spring in Spain’. For the moment, sunbathing and bikini weather is not due for a while, the met office confirms, but says it is ‘unlikely’ that predictions of a cold summer will come true.
British man, 47, blown out of Torrevieja flat by exploding insect repellent
A British man was thrown bodily out of his Torrevieja flat when a bottle of insecticide exploded. The undisclosed victim, said to be aged 47, was using an aerosol-based repellent spray to get rid of a cockroach in the semi-enclosed balcony of his first-floor apartment when the cannister blew up with such force that it took out an entire wall of the building. At the same time, the Briton was flung out by the sheer force of the expansive wave caused by the explosion and landed five metres below on the street. He is said to be in hospital in a serious condition with multiple bruising and numerous broken bones, but it is not known whether his life
is in danger and medics are not yet sure of what after-effects he may be left with. Police say the incident, which happened in a block of flats at the corner of C/ Catral and C/ Dolores at around 22.30hrs on Tuesday, caused a commotion, but nobody was hurt and the building did not have to be evacuated. Fortunately, the victim’s partner was in another room at the time and she did not suffer injuries. The cause of the explosion is unknown, but may be due to the fact that various domestic appliances were switched on in the area of the terrace where the injured man was using the insecticide.

Spain calls for changes in EU legal system to fight yihad terrorists Interior minister Jorge and non-affiliated Fernández Díaz has called for ‘big changes’ in legal procedures within the European Union to allow member States greater powers in dealing with fundamentalist terrorism in the name of the yihad, or Islamic holy war. He says ‘arresting offenders is helpful’, but not enough, since the justice system at EU level needs to be adapted so that Spain and other member States have greater legal powers available to them in the fight against Al-Qaeda and similar organisations,
terrorists. Recalling that ‘it is not possible to act outside the law’, Fernández Díaz hopes the EU will create a ‘legal framework’ which is sufficient to battle against yihad-related attacks. One of the major problems in the fight against terrorism is what Fernández Díaz calls ‘Muslim repatriates’, or people who have converted to Islam and travelled to Syria to fight alongside the Bachar al-Asad rebel forces

– ‘a potential focal point for high risk to Spain’ – and return to the latter country ‘radicalised’ and with the knowledge and technique to be able to commit attacks in a solitary capacity or as part of a wider terrorism organisation. Following the bombing at the Boston marathon in the USA, the murder and decapitation of British soldier Lee Rigby in London and the stabbing of an Armed Forces member serving on an anti-terrorist squad, Spain is on its guard and has warned its own soldiers to be extra-careful. Spain’s current antiyihad strategy includes paying extra attention to ‘Muslim repatriates’, the presence of religious cults or sects, internet scrutiny and keeping an extra eye on terrorists in prison.

Anti-Troika Demonstration In 80 European Cities Includes 11 In Spain

Hundreds of thousands of people joined in a protest march in 80 European cities on Saturday evening against the ‘catastrophic policies’ of the Troika. Madrid hosted the largest demonstration on the continent, with several thousand people setting off from the Plaza de Neptuno at 18.30hrs. The international callup for protesters said the Troika – made up of the Central European Bank (BCE), the International Monetary Fund (FMI) and the European Commission (EC) – had, through its economic and financial
decisions, caused ‘poverty, home repossessions, hunger, cutbacks, labour reforms and privatisation’. Their banners read ‘we don’t owe, so we’re not paying’ and ‘Rescatan al banquero, desahucian al obrero’, which translates as ‘they rescue the banks and then repossess the workers’ homes’. As they passed the national PP headquarters, they called for president Mariano Rajoy to resign. Europe has demanded Spain increases taxes even more and puts up IVA beyond its current 21 per
cent, makes cuts in pensions and in the minimum wage – but Rajoy says he does not intend to do this. And although he says he will ‘take on board’ the Bank of Spain’s recommendations that the long-term unemployed should be taken on in full-time, 40hour-a-week jobs at less than the current minimum wage of 645 euros, and that State retirement age should be increased to 67 immediately, Rajoy insists the government will stick to its existing plans. Greece, Alexis Tsipras, and João Camargo, head of the Portuguese pressure group Que se lixe a Troika (literally, more or less ‘throw the Troika in the bin’, but in the sense of ‘may the Troika fail’) joined the protest in Madrid as did leader of Izquierda Unida (‘United Left’) at national government level, Cayo Lara. The anti-Troika march in Frankfurt, Germany’s financial capital, organised by pressure group Blockupy, involved violent confrontations between police and a small group of demonstrators, and several towns and cities in Portugal – including the capital, Lisboa – a country where the unemployment figure of 18 per cent is the highest in living memory also joined the Europe-wide protest. Back in Spain, Valencia, Barcelona and Zaragoza staged demonstrations, as did A Coruña, Vigo, Lugo, Ourense and Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, and Vitoria and San Sebastián in the Basque Country. Protests took place elsewhere in Europe – in Brussels, outside the BCE, in France, The Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Austria, England and Northern Ireland.

Minimum age of sexual consent could rise from 13 to 16 in Spain Spain’s government is considering increasing the minimum age for consenting to sexual relations with adults to 16. At present it is 13, one of the lowest in the western world, and UNICEF has been advising Spain to increase it since around 2007 in order to prevent child abuse. And the European Commission considers that a child aged under 15 years is not capable of consenting to sex with adults. Although a significant increase in the minimum age of sexual consent has been under discussion for many years, the real debate was sparked at the end of last year when a 13-year-old girl was shot dead by her boyfriend of 39, who later shot himself in the head when surrounded by police.
The girl’s family, from a village in the province of Albacete, disapproved of the relationship, which started when the couple were aged 12 and 38 respectively. They reported the man to the police on several occasions but no action was taken and, when the child reached 13, the family was told
nothing could be done as she was legally old enough. Her grandfather suffered superficial gunshot wounds when the boyfriend went on the rampage, and the youngster and a bystander who had gone outside to smoke were killed.

steve gilmore memorial golf championship
On February 13th this year Steve ‘Happy’ Gilmore suffered a fatal heart attack on the 8th green of Desert Springs at the far too early age of 56. As a member of Alboran club, Captain elect of Boxers Golf Society, and a Federation member who played regularly in their competitions, Steve was a well-known and popular figure on the Almeria golf circuit. In past years he had been a multi-talented sportsman who played Rugby to a high standard in the UK and Australia, and even turned his hand to taking on the tough guys of Australian Rules football. More recently it was golf that satisfied his need for competition, and 2012 produced all manner of successes with a rapidly growing collection of trophies and accolades, including qualifying as a member of the annual UK Ryder Cup team against Spain at Aguilon. Having decided to tackle the Andalucian Federation Seniors tour he won their 2nd division Order Of Merit, battling his way to three third places against the best of the local players and the hardened tour regulars. Also, to his immense satisfaction, he triumphed at the 2 day stroke play competition with a score that gave him the lowest gross of the tournament. These successes earned an invitation from the Federacion de Andalucia to represent Andalucia in a 2 day competition, securing victory against Valencia - effectively making him a Spanish county player. To recognise his competitive spirit and love of this corner of Spain, his friends decided to try to organise something in his memory that would celebrate and promote golf in the province of Almeria, and do something to raise the profile of this vital tourist activity. Approaches to all of the golf courses in the area brought an overwhelming response of enthusiasm for the project, with pledges to support it through donations of prizes that would open up Almeria’s nine 18 hole courses to the winners. Amazingly two courses in Murcia and one in Granada swiftly added their fraternal weight to the idea, along with many local businesses, and the prize pool swiftly rose past the €5,000 mark! The tournament is now sure to be one of the most popular events of the 2013 golfing calendar and will establish itself as a keenly anticipated annual competition. Sadly the reduction in cheap flights from the UK and other European destinations in recent years has left empty hotels, apartments and restaurants in the region. A general tightening of belts may have contributed to the problem but in the meantime golf remains one of the
biggest money spinners for the Spanish economy and still brings many millions of foreign earnings to areas such as the Costa Brava, Costa del Sol, Costa Calida and Costa Blanca. The property crash has hit hard in Costa Almeria, with at least six projects for building new courses being shelved. Whilst local golfers may be enjoying ‘millionaire’s golf’, with sparsely used courses, if this trend continues then many of the resources in the area will continue to shrink. The promotional day will be widely advertised and, with the Almeria Tourist Board as an active participant, hopefully will do a good job of celebrating the great opportunities for golf in the area. The tournament will take place at Alboran golf course on 6th July, with players competing in an individual stableford competition for the splendid Steve Gilmore Trophy, sponsored by Liberty Seguros, whilst the first three places in all four divisions will go home with an engraved trophy. There are more than 80 prizes of green fees to play for during the round, donated by all of the nine Almeria courses, Aguilon, Alboran, Almerimar, Desert Springs, La Envia, Macenas, Marina, Playa Serena, Valle del Este, as well as Roda and Hacienda del Alamo from Murcia and Santa Clara from Granada. Additionally many local businesses have made generous contributions, with magazine owner GSF helping with all of the printing, some of the best restaurants in Almeria such as El Albir in Mojacar and AcáCharles in San Jose providing vouchers for meals, and many of the local golf societies contributing to the mind-boggling array of prizes. The Spanish members of Alboran Seniors have chosen to remember Steve by presenting a trophy and a substantial prize for the best senior over 55 yrs. Determined to make it a memorable and fun day, the organisers have laid on a buffet with wine and beer for the prize-giving where a prize-draw will take place from amongst the competitors which could send everybody home with something to remember. The organisers are hoping that
steve gilmore memorial golf championship
friends and family will come to see their heroes and heroines collect their rewards, but there will have to be a small charge to cover the cost of the refreshments. Naturally Steve’s home course of Alboran and his home Society Boxers have been the central source of support, but the organisers have stressed that nothing would have been possible without the contributions towards funding made by local businesses, societies and individuals. Entry forms for the tournament should be available through all of the local golf societies and from all participating golf courses but, in order to be able to complete the competition in a timely manner, entry will have to be limited to 120 players. For any details or enquiries regarding the tournament please email stevegilmorememorial@gmail. com or call Tony Redston 605 49 46 69. The sudden nature of Steve’s death, with no warning of imminent health problems, has heightened awareness of the threat of heart disease amongst golfers and, at the request of Steve’s daughters, there will be a collection on the day to be donated to the British Heart Foundation to continue their research and awareness programmes, which hopefully will receive generous support from players and visitors alike. Boxers GS have begun a series of courses to train people in how to recognise symptoms and how to give emergency treatment to victims. These courses are open to anyone living in the Albox, Arboleas area at a cost-covering €5, so if you wish to take part please call Tony Hammond on 634 350621 to make a reservation.

Friday Golf Society 31 may:
31 golfers, including 6 guests, took part in an X x Y + Z competition. The weather was typical May weather for Almerimar, sunny with a breeze. The winners with an excellent score of 146 points were Mick & Lynda Hartle with their guests Les and Lorraine. Although this was a great score it is not the best ever for this type of competition as another team has scored 149 points in the past. Last place and chocolates went to Larry Rowe, Padraic Byrne, Isabel Haworth and Ingegerd Erasmie with a score of 104 points. Nearest the pin was won by Barry Prior with a distance of 4.30 metres. Thanks to Mr President for giving out the prizes this week. Please note that the regular FGS summer Tuesday golf starts next week. You can see the full results at:

First Roquetas Motorbike Rally A Big Success
Hundreds of motorbike enthusiasts came from all over Spain last Friday, to take part in the first ‘City of Roquetas Connection’ weekend rally. There were all sorts of bikes; choppers, custom, racing, tuned and of course, a lot of Harleys. The event was centred around the hotel Bellavista as well as various bars and restaurants in the urbanisation and every night saw a different venue used as a meeting point. The entertainment included lives bands, DJ’s and even some magicians. Saturday was the big day with a ‘run’ down to Aguadulce, visiting the port of Roquetas, the Santa Ana castle and
amphitheatre and the bullring in the town. A huge barbecue was held on the beach in Aguadulce before they all returned to the urbanisation for the nights big party. On Sunday, the bikers met up at noon for the final farewell, which included a massive paella and more live music. Organiser Santi Gellego said he was very pleased with how many people took part and how much they had enjoyed the hospitality of the town. The local Food Bank benefited from the event; each participant was asked to donate at least one kilo of non perishable goods to this very worthy local charity.
Matador Line Up Announced For This Years Fiesta
Bullfighting aficionados will be pleased to hear some of Spains best matadors will be performing at the Fiesta of Santa Ana in July. The full line up is: El Juli (pictured), Enrique Ponce, Jose Manzanares, El Fandi, and Alejandro Talavante. The event will take place in the towns impressive bullring on the 20th and 21st July. The mayor Gabriel
Amat made a point of being at the press conference to announce the news, stressing, “The unconditional support of the city council for the event.” He also said, “Bullfighting forms part of our national culture and this council intends to do everything, within reason, to ensure this fine tradition remains an important part of our heritage here in
Roquetas.” Bullfighting has become less popular in the last ten years, with many active opposition groups staging protests not only at bullfights, but also at the headquarters of both local and national governments. Andalucia remains the bastion of the corrida but many other towns, especially in the north have banned the so called ‘sport.’ Even in towns where the bullfight remains, attendances have dropped dramatically in recent years. The world famous Fiesta of San Fermin – The Running of The Bulls – is held in mid July in Pampalona and attracts huge crowds of tourists from around the world; it’s as much a festival of drinking and partying as it is about bullfighting. The often dangerous tradition of running through the streets with the bulls takes place every morning and there are often casualties; last year an American student was gored to death when he fell in the path of a number of raging bulls.

One of Spain’s biggest appeals is the quality of life on offer. Retirement in Spain offers expats yearround sunshine, stunning countryside and beaches, and a low cost of living. Retirees are attracted here by the fulfilling post-retirement lifestyle that is on offer as well as the financial benefits that arise from inexpensive housing and healthcare. Living Expenses: Spain remains a relatively cheap place to live, especially when compared with other western European nations, and will offer retirees a good standard of living for their money. Healthcare: Spain has a well-developed national health system that is available to all, even those from abroad, although there are some limitations to this latter group. However, the health service here does
experience high demands for services and there are often long waiting lists for treatment and operations. Many people opt for private healthcare in order to avoid this and people who are seriously considering retirement in Spain may want to research the cost and availability of such care. Housing: The housing market in Spain, as with many countries throughout the

Forget the Mediterranean diet, NORDIC foods could be the key ‘A health-enhancing regional Nordic diet has therefore been proposed as an alternative to the Mediterranean diet.’ The diet has already been nicknamed the Noma diet - after the Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, ranked as the world’s best three years in a row. The study featured 166 obese people from Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland, some of whom ate their regular diet and some who adopted the Nordic diet. Both sample groups ate the same number of calories but those on the Nordic diet ate meals packed with
Osteopath Naturopath For years, the Mediterranean diet with plenty of olive oil and vegetables has been lauded as the key to health and longevity. But it seems that a Scandinavian nation’s cuisine could actually be better for you. Scientists have found that eating a diet based on that served up traditionally in Denmark could significantly reduce your risk of heart disease. Nordic cuisine is usually made up of fresh berries, fish and game - foods that thrive in colder northern climates. Professor Matti Uusitupa, from the University of Eastern Finland, told The Daily Telegraph: ‘The Mediterranean diet, representing the diet traditionally eaten in southern Europe, has long been related to improved health and prevention of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and type two diabetes. ‘Acceptance of the Mediterranean diet has not been easy in other parts of the western world, probably due to difficulties in changing dietary patterns, cultural differences in taste and limited accessibility to various foods. While those who stuck to their regular diet showed little difference in their levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol after 24 weeks, those on the Mediterranean diet had seen LDL-C levels drop four per cent with an increase in ‘good’ cholesterol. Unlike the Mediterranean diet, the Nordic version also reduced chemicals that cause inflammation in the blood that are linked to heart disease.

Europe warns Spain over hospitals’ refusal to accept EHIC cards from tourists
Spain has been sanctioned by the European Commission for refusing to accept EHIC cards from tourists who need medical treatment. The EHIC is valid for emergency or ongoing routine treatment in any member State during a temporary stay. But a large number of holidaymakers have reported being asked for a credit card and health insurance when attending hospital or a doctor’s surgery, and being made to pay if they have neither. Others who thought they were being treated on their EHICs found out later that a bill had been sent to their health insurers. Some say they have been told that if they have health insurance, their EHICs are not valid for treatment. Private health insurance policies are not valid for using the
Spanish State to buy toll roads in debt
State service which, if an EU citizen is visiting Spain or any other member State, requires a EHIC. The EC says it believes that hospitals in Spain are denying free public healthcare to holidaymakers from the EU and telling them they can only be treated privately, and then billing this to either health insurers or, in most cases, to the patient. Insurance companies offering health policies have been reporting this matter to Brussels, as have tourists forced to pay out of their own pockets. The EC has been attempting to resolve this problem with Spain since 2010, with limited success, and the number of complaints continues to rise. To this end, Brussels has decided to send a written warning to Spain giving them a deadline to comply with EU rules.

RENTALS - SALES -MANAGEMENT - MAINTENANCE “We have 15 years experience of the local coastal property market, with an unrivalled reputation for reliable, honest advice and value for money and we urgently need more properties to sell and rent. We believe our commission charges are unbeatable - check us out.”
Toll roads in serious financial trouble will be ‘rescued’ by the State, although the companies which have the franchise for maintenance and repair in exchange for charging tolls will still retain a slice. Nine toll firms are in debt and facing bankruptcy, but the ministry of public works intends to buy their deficits and take over ownership of these roads, mostly motorways. It is not yet known whether this will mean tolls are scrapped on major international trunk roads such as the A-7/AP-7, which runs from the French border down to the south of Spain via the east coast, or whether drivers will continue to pay but the toll money will go to the government instead. The ministry says it plans to set up a private company to buy most of the 3.5-billion-euro debt the toll road concessionary companies are struggling to pay off. They say the plan is ‘complex but viable’ and that it will involve ‘concessions and sacrifices’ by all parties involved. Among the problems the ‘rescue’ presupposes is the fact that the motorway debt affects 52 banks or finance companies, and that landowners whose plots were compulsorily purchased in whole or in part to build new trunk roads have still not been paid. Among the conditions given to Spain by the European Commission on Wednesday for increasing the deadline for paying back its State deficit was that of ‘reducing contingent debits in public finances deriving from non-profitable transport infrastructures’.

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com
Q: Please explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for non-payment of capital gains tax.
A . The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain , and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency , the notary will consider you a non resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are in fact a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. The best way to secure tax residency status is making a resident income tax declaration in Spain in June of every year. If you are going to sell shortly, request this certificate in advance to avoid last minute surprises. 1. The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over ): If you are a resident and sell one property to purchase another of the same or higher price you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax. To benefit you have to have been a resident for at least 3 year before the sale takes place, and you must purchase the next property within 2 years of the sale. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. Report by Martin Shortland

Golf Trinidad Hotel Will Open Next Week
After almost four months of renovation and refurbishment, The Balearic Roc Hotels chain will open its latest acquisition on 14th June. The Golf Trinidad Hotel in Playa Serena has been closed for more than two years and was beginning to look rather forlorn. But all that has changed now with the investment of 4 million euros to bring it back to its former glory. The CEO Guillermo Miralles made the announcement last week, saying, “We have transformed a somewhat outdated building which now enjoys all the latest modern facilities customers require.” The 377 room hotel has been upgrade to a four star rating, but for the moment will only be categorised as a ‘3 star superior’ because it doesn’t have the required amount of covered parking spaces. Mr. Miralles explained they had concentrated all their efforts on the interior of the property and that whilst the parking spaces were available, they had yet to be covered. He also said in this their first year of trading, they would be concentrating on the domestic market, but had plans to encourage foreign tour operators to use the hotel in the future. He echoed the views expressed by many in the regions tourist industry, the lack of flights. “The province has everything in place to be a really popular tourist destination, but without the availability of regular and frequent flights from other European countries, it will never be able to realise its potential.” He used Turkey and Minorca as examples of places which had actively negotiated with tour operators in order to ‘put them on the map’ of tourist detinations.
Oso is looking for a new home
gets along well with other dogs and people.
OSITO has been the more fortunate of the brothers so far, because he is going to travel to Germany next week to his new family and home. This is going to be a hard blow for OSO who will surely miss his brother, but his outgoing, lively nature should help him make new friends and hopefully find a family of his own soon.
If you really can’t give Oso a home or don’t know anyone who can, perhaps you would like to become a member of the shelter or even sponsor a dog. Also, of course, the shelter is always in need of blankets, towels and food etc. which can be taken to the Sanctuary. If you want to make a monetary contribution, you can pay it directly into the Sanctuary’s Bank account. Saturday mornings is set aside for adoptions at the Shelter and there are a lot of dogs to choose from, large and small. The best time for material donations, including food, is during the week. If you want details of any of these options or have a question about the shelter, please send an email to Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com and he will reply to you straight away.
OSO is a male mix born in October 2010. He stands about 30 cm high and weighs about 6 kilos. He is a friendly, cute little fellow who
A warm welcome at the Sanctuary is assured for all those wanting to support the Sanctuary.
OSO and OSITO are two brothers who were brought to the shelter by the social agents a couple of months ago. They had found them wandering around the streets.

8 Summer Steps for Healthy Living Improve your health with steps so simple you’ll barely notice the effort. In the warmer, longer, lazier days of summer, the living may not be easy, but your life probably feels less chaotic. Even adults tend to adopt a “school’s out!” attitude in summer. That’s why this is a perfect time to improve your health in a fashion so seasonally laid back you’ll barely notice the effort. 1. Give Your Diet a Berry Boost If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh berries -- blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries -- every day. They’ll help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidant-rich. A big bonus: Berries are also tops in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers. 2. Get Dirty -- and Stress Less To improve your stress level, plant a small garden, cultivate a flower box, or if space is really limited, plant a few flower pots -- indoors or out. Just putting your hands in soil is “grounding.” And when life feels like you’re moving so fast your feet are barely touching the stuff, being mentally grounded can help relieve physical and mental stress. 3. Floss Daily You know you need to, now it’s time to start: floss every single day. Do it at the beach (in a secluded spot), while reading on your patio, or when watching TV -- and the task will breeze by. Flossing reduces oral bacteria, which improves overall body health, and if oral bacteria is low, your body has more resources to fight bacteria elsewhere. Floss daily and you’re doing better than at least 85% of people. 4. Get Outside to Exercise Pick one outdoor activity -- going on a hike, taking a nature walk, playing games such as tag with your kids, cycling, roller blading, or swimming -- to shed that cooped-up feeling of gym workouts. And remember, the family that plays together not only gets fit together -- it’s also a great way to create bonding time. 5. Be Good to Your Eyes To protect your vision at work and at play, wear protective eyewear. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes. 6. Holiday Time! Improve your heart health: take advantage of summer’s slower schedule by using your holiday time to unwind. Holidays have multiple benefits: They can help lower your blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones such as cortisol, which contributes to a widening waist and an increased risk of heart disease. 7. Alcohol: Go Lite Summer’s a great time to skip drinks with hard alcohol and choose a light, chilled alcoholic beverage. A sangria, a cold beer, or a wine spritzer are all refreshing but light. In moderation -- defined as one to two drinks daily -alcohol can protect against heart disease. 8. Sleep Well Resist the urge to stay up later during long summer days. Instead pay attention to good sleep hygiene by keeping the same bedtime and wake-up schedule and not drinking alcohol within three hours of bedtime. It’s also a good idea to avoid naps during the day unless you take them every day at the same time, for the same amount of time. There they are: Eight super simple ways to boost your health this summer. Try one or try them all. They’re so easy you won’t even know they’re -- shhhh -- good for you.

the world’s cheapest and most over-valued property markets ...UK house prices are still 31% too high
House prices in Britain are overvalued by 31 per cent compared to rents and 21 per cent too high against incomes, according to a study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Britain is named as one of many of the world’s property markets that still have overpriced housing stock but are also seeing values continue to rise. The research compared prices with local wages and rents and according to the OECD there are still more overvalued than undervalued markets, including many European countries where the post-crisis housing market correction is still ongoing - most notably Spain. It says property values in Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and one non-European country, Australia are increasing, despite being overvalued. Most of these country’s are heavily reliant on their property market and have seen households build up big mortgage debts. The OECD report said: ‘While price corrections in these countries are necessary, they are also concerning as they weaken households’ financial health.’ It suggests Belgium, Norway and Canada, where the new Bank of England Governor Mark Carney has been head of the central bank, are the most expensive markets compared with their own long-term averages, followed by New Zealand, France and Australia. For valuations, if the price-to-rent ratio - a measure of the profitability of owning a house - and the price-to-income ratio - a measure of affordability - are above their long-term averages, house prices are said to be overvalued, and viceversa. The data found house prices differ widely across OECD countries, both with respect to recent changes and to valuation levels. A change in the real price compared to a year earlier is used to tell whether prices are rising or falling. There are a number of countries where houses prices are undervalued and still falling, according to the data. This category includes European countries hit hard by the crisis – Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic – but also Japan. Two countries – Germany and Switzerland – have houses which appear undervalued but are rising. The OECD points to strong growth in household disposable income and favourable financing conditions for the price boost in these two European countries. It says a handful of countries have properties which are broadly correctly valued. This category includes the US, where prices have started rising again after a substantial correction during the financial crisis. It also points to Italy where prices are falling rapidly, Austria, where prices are rising and Iceland, Korea and Luxembourg where prices are roughly flat. House prices in Britain fell drastically in the wake of the financial crisis but have been steadily rising in the last few years – many house price indexes are reporting prices which are racing towards pre-2008 levels. But the British property market is being propped by London, which is in turn being propped up in its most expensive areas by an influx of foreign buyers. The Battersea Power Station development for example has sold out of most of its 866 luxury apartments – but all to Singaporean investors looking for a safe haven. Average prices in prime central London have hit £1.4m, the latest Land Registry all sales data analysed by specialist London Central Portfolio shows, up 13 per cent on a year ago. Meanwhile, prices in suburban London are also shooting up, with monthly Land Registry figures showing Camden up 11.8 per cent, Hackney up 10.3 per cent and Hammersmith and Fulham up 11 per cent. According to the Nationwide house price index for May, confidence in the economy and an increased availability of cheap mortgages pushed average house prices to their highest level in nearly two years. It found prices rose 1.1 per cent on a year ago, its fastest rise since November 2011, and 0.4 per cent on the previous month. The average property is now worth £167,912 - the highest level since July 2011 when the average house cost £168,731. (mailonline.co.uk)
Spanish explorers find three-million-year-old Martian meteorite in Tunisian desert
A meteorite found in the Tunisian Sahara desert by two Spaniards has turned out to be a lump of Martian rock. It was discovered in 2010 but the finding has been kept secret until now as researchers at Catalunya Polytechnic studied it. According to a report by ThinkSpain, head of the Faculty of Nano-engineering, Jordi Llorca, stated the composition of the meteorite – which weighs just over half a kilo – is identical to that of two other rocks found in Morocco and in Los Ángeles (USA) which form part of meteor shower which permanently orbits Mars. The meteor shower originated through a collision by an asteroid against Mars some three million years ago, and it frequently travels close to the Earth. Its origin is the deepest yet in the Martian crust, and is a KG-002, of the Shergottita type, which is the 17th most significant of all interplanetary rocks found. Physics graduate David Allepuz, from Corbera de Llobregat (Barcelona province) who works for La Caixa bank and geologist José Vicente Casado, who owns a mineral shop in León, search for meteorites as a hobby and found this one in the Sahara desert in Tunisia. When they gave it to Llorca for analysis, they were told not to say anything about their discovery, in the hope that other, similar rocks would turn up. It is the only one of 57,000 meteorites found by Europeans outside the Antarctic and the sole space rock of which there is audio-visual footage of its discovery. Of these 57,000 rocks, a total of 117 are from Mars, but this is the one found to have come from the deepest location in the surface of the planet and has revealed fascinating information about the atmospheric and geological makeup of this other world. It shows that 120 million years ago, Mars’ centre became solid rather than boiling liquid and had a dense atmosphere. Llorca believes the meteorite is the result of ‘the greatest cosmic catastrophe’ in the history of the solar system. Allepuz and Casado, authors of the book Meteorites: Introduction and guide to recognition, have carried out six international space-rock search expeditions and recovered 16 meteorites, most of which have come from asteroids. The Ksar Ghillane area of southern Tunisia is recognised as an ‘Area of Concentrated Meteorite Collection’, of which there are only 40 in the world. Even so, one meteorite per square kilometre falls every 10,000 years and only one in 10,000 come from Mars, which means finding a Martian rock ‘is like winning the lottery’, Casado and Allepuz explain. They recommend searching in deserts, particularly those with white sand, since black rocks show up better – and most meteorites are black because they burn as they pass through the Earth’s atmosphere, the two authors explain.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
MACS Opens 3rd Charity Shop in Mojacar
MACS third Charity shop opened in Mojacar on Saturday 1st June 2013, with the opening attended by a bevy of the volunteers, general public and sponsors of MACS. Sadly Elaine Kay Brown, President and Founder of MACS, was unable to be present at the Opening as she is in hospital having further treatment. Elaine did, however, write a speech (the thirs shop being her baby ‘so to speak’) for her husband David to read out - David, too emotional for words, passed the task over to Tracey Ingman. In the speech Elaine thanked all the sponsors who had helped MACS and the volunteers who had worked so hard to get the shop ready. It was a fairly low-key opening ceremony because the main Inauguration of the premises will hopefully be in September, when the rest of the building is ready for use; this being a Day Centre for patients, relaxation/quiet room and mobility equipment storage. Elaine stressed that the mobility equipment, available on free loan to cancer patients, will also be made available to anyone else if they need it, with a donation to MACS being the only criteria - this is available now and all people need to do is ask at the shop or phone the MACS helpline on 634 656555 or email macscancersupport@live.co.uk MACS were extremely grateful to receive three huge cheques on the day, from local Groups, FACE, The Dames in Turre and The Mojacar Masons. The monies donated will be a massive help to MACS in furnishing the Day Centre and other facilities etc; without Sponsors such as these MACS would not exist and we are truly grateful for their continued fundraising assistance. If you visit Mojacar, or live in Mojacar, then a visit to the MACS shop is a ‘must’ - you won’t be disappointed. MACS continuing to serve the community in any way we can...

A restaurant in New York is serving up a curry so fiercely hot chefs have to wear gas masks to prepare it. Touted the ‘world’s spiciest curry’ the Phaal contains eight of the chillies in the world including the Bhut Naga Jolokia, which is used to make tear gas by the Indian Military. The curry which is being served to diners at The Brick Lane Curry House in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, registers at a mind-blowing 1million units on the Scoville Scale - 200 times hotter than original Tabasco sauce. The fiery feast has left diners sweating, crying, shaking and vomiting. Some have even hallucinated while attempting the eye-watering meal while others have collapsed and been taken to hospital by ambulance. The curry is available with chicken, lamb, goat, paneer cheese or vegetables; every customer who manages to clear their plate is awarded a free beer, certificate and place in
the restaurant’s Phaal of Fame. Dhiraj Tiwari, 33, manager at the New York curry house, said the curry was so hot even he couldn’t manage it. He said: ‘India is known for its spices and we wanted to create a dish that combined Indian spices with the world’s hottest chillies. ‘The curry contains the Bhut Naga Jolokia, which measures 1million on the scoville unit. The Indian army use this chilli to make tear gas, it’s excrutiatingly hot. The curry does have flavour but it has a spice that lingers and continues to burn your mouth for a long time after. We have to get diners to agree to a verbal disclaimer before they try the curry because it contains so many chillies it can be dangerous. We have to really convey the intensity of the heat to customers before they order it but I don’t think anyone realises just how hot it is until they take a mouthful.’

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
Pete doesn’t like eggs, but I do. This gives rise to a kitchen anomaly; if I want an egg, I have to cook it myself! This is where it gets complicated. I have no interest in cooking; to me it is a chore along the lines of dusting and hoovering. Add in to the equation that I will eat and enjoy almost anything that is put in front of me and you end up with someone who has a very undomesticated outlook on life. Take eggs for instance. They have to be bought six at a time, and eaten before they go off. This means that there are six occasions between buying and going off when I will have to cook one of them. Usually this ends up as six occasions when I can’t be bothered to go through the faff of getting the necessary utensils out, waiting while the egg cooks, and then washing the whole lot up afterwards, not to mention the extravagance of the electricity used, and all for just one egg! Of course I could hard-boil the whole lot in one go, but I’ve tried that, and the result is either that I forget about them completely and they fester in the fridge for weeks, or I forget that I have hard-boiled them, and boil josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk them all over

again. For me cooking eggs has a number of pitfalls; if I boil the eggs, I find that my mind wanders, I go off on a tangent and forget all about them. Frying them necessitates a frying pan, which is never fun to wash up afterwards, and oil, which needs disposing of carefully – it can be neither chucked nor recycled. Then there’s scrambling, a good end result, but hardly worth the effort. This leaves poaching, and I hadn’t got a poacher. Until Barbara, who is up there with the domestic elite, bought me a poacher for my birthday. I celebrated its addition to the Biggs Culinary Department by buying six eggs. I then cajoled the cooker into action, readied the poacher, and christened it with two eggs. As the egg whites turned white it occurred to me that I had no idea how to tell when the egg inside was done, so I appealed to the expert. ‘How do you know when they are done inside?’ I queried. ‘You time them.’ Pete replied. Oh. That hadn’t occurred to me. I took the lid off and peered at them. They looked done. With trepidation I tipped them onto their toast, and made the first incision. Perfect! Two perfectly poached eggs, cooked entirely by guesswork!
Does Your Scone Measure Up?
As many who read this column will know, one of my joys in life and a luxury that I miss dearly as an English exile in Spain, is the authentic Cornish or Devonshire cream tea. Preferably the Cornish variety though, because that’s a part of the country where I spent two glorious years of my life and represents a portion from my past that invokes many happy and poignant memories. There is also a subtle but distinct difference between these two counties – both of whom claim to be the originator of the cream tea - in the manner with which it should be served up. In Cornwall the jam is traditionally applied first before walloping on the clotted cream - and quite right too - while in yer‘tis country, it’s the cream that is trowelled on prior to the jam. But basically, who really gives a toss? Well apparently somebody does, because a senior lecturer in pure mathematics at Sheffield University - bearing the good old West Country name of Dr Eugenia Cheng – has not only come out firmly on the side of the Cornish
method, but has also calculated the exact quantities, dimensions and ingredient ratios to make the perfect cream tea centre piece. My first thought when I saw the headline was that here was another anorak researcher, wasting more public money on the latest useless study. But on reading more of the article, I discovered that in fact Dr Cheng had been commissioned by the world’s oldest producer of clotted cream: Rodda’s of Scorrier in Cornwall. Dr Cheng has since Tweeted that she was not paid to conduct this mini item of research, which begs the question: just who did pay for her time? But to be fair I reckon that the amount of work needed to reach her formula was probably minimal – especially to a math’s whizz of her standing. Then I thought: but hang on, none of us buy scones already slathered with jam and cream – in whatever order – because when we purchase a cream tea, we are given the makings and construct the things ourselves. Moreover we as cream tea consumers are limited to the supplies that we are given, which I have to say in some of the less salubrious tea rooms, are woefully inadequate. I hasten to add however, that I have only ever come across these particular establishments outside of the two counties
By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com
mentioned and on one notable occasion in the wilds of Essex (where else) where I complained about the starvation rations of jam and cream that accompanied my digestive biscuit-sized scone. I was told to kindly take my business elsewhere if the offering was not to my liking . . . or words to that effect. I didn’t mind being told to sling my hook so much as the sight of the ash falling off the end of the proprietor’s ciggie into my tea as she glared down at me. Anyway, getting back to Dr Eugenia, the ideal ratio is 21-1; in other words half the weight of both jam and cream to that of the scone. To prevent dripping, there should be a 5mm rim of scone exposed after the application of jam and cream; the ideal thickness of the jam should be 2.3mm with a 4mm coating of cream . . . all of which is based on a scone that has a diameter of 60mm and a thickness of 28mm. Sigh. The Cornish method of application emerges as the victor here, because she states that jam should be applied first because of its density. Putting it on after the cream could cause the jam to run off causing sticky fingers, a mess on my shirt and another rollicking from my wife. Finally the good doctor states that the clotted cream should be the preferred product, due to the extra volume of whipped
cream that would be required. But I thought that this was a done deal anyway; no self respecting cream tea should include the wishy-washy whipped stuff should it? So there you have it. The research findings are of course useless and merely a clever marketing ruse by Rodda’s. A good one too, because the publicity has been international with Dr Cheng having already been interviewed for Australian and Canadian radio. And at little or no cost to themselves, Rodda’s marketing director is to be congratulated. For my part, I will do what I have always done: spoon almighty dollops of jam and cream onto the two halves of a jumbo sized scone and present it to my slavering mouth - completely oblivious to density, volume, weight or any other mathematical consideration. And if it drips off the scone, then I will just lick the plate as always and if necessary, the table cloth!

Tales of the supernatural abound in country areas and Alqueria is no exception. Hauntings and other manifestations which traditionally go bump in the night have been as a plague to the Pueblo. Many nocturnal rattles and bangs have been traced to Manuela but some still remain unexplained. Alquerian psychic activity appears to be centred in the Castle to the west of the town Plaza. Its proximity to the Bar La Casa Devante with its stocks of Remitroot Liquor have accounted for quite a number of these apparitions but by no means all. Tradition suggests that three spectres have, over the years taken up residence within the castle battlements. The first occurred while the castle and village still sat on the hilltop. He was a Moor and how he met his untimely end is not recorded. However while the defunct Moor was out on some ghostly assignment the castle was rebuilt in the valley below. Returning to find his home gone he wanders the Sierra Alhamilla buttonholing terrified travellers and asking about his former residence. A semi-transparent figure can still be seen on summer evenings carrying stones to the hilltop. It is either our long dead Moor or Poyato smuggling Remitroot into Spain. Our second insubstantial resident, by legend arrived one stormy night. Some misdemeanour led to his demise and caused him to wander abroad, an itinerant manifestation. Finding the Alquerian fortress unoccupied he gratefully moved in. This second occupant was more or less the industrial standard for hauntings. Nightly wanderings, midnight howlings and other ghostly benchmark activity. It did get the reputation for being a good listener though. Locals who had committed some sin or other preferred the castle at midnight rather than Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido’s confessional box. The Ghost was usually both less harsh and less drunk than the Priest. Manuela told the invisible entity all of her secrets, the only person or rather non-person she could confide in. One day however she asked a Monseñor from Almería to exorcise the spirit. When asked why she said, “He knows too much.” The third and present incumbent was a priest who died of drunk and debauchery. His presence in the village is still much debated as he would fit seamlessly into Alquerian society passing for one of the more substantial members of the community. On a Saturday night there would be a dozen or so contenders all apparently mimicking the ex-priest’s behaviour. No-one admitted speaking or seeing this wayward vision apart from Loco Paco. He swears he saw and spoke to the supernatural being, but then Paco swears to having had meaningful conversations with Constantine the Great over a Tinto Verano.

braben’s blog... Do you ever look at the ridiculous predictions that are made every year and wonder who comes up with them? Is someone sitting in a room somewhere making up outlandish things, after a few wines, then selling them to the press for a small fortune? Remember the recent impending doom when the Mayans were supposed to have predicted that the world was to end? That turned out to be on a par with Mystic Meg’s lottery predictions! Neither the Mayans nor Mystic Meg seemed to be able to get their predictions anywhere near correct, so I’m going to have a go; I think I can predict some things with
pinpoint accuracy! First of all, diets. Out of a world population of about 7 billion, I predict that approximately 5 million will be on a diet at any one time! Five million! What do Cadburys say about that I wonder? It isn’t just they they are on a diet, but it’s the weird diets that some people take up which is nothing short of amazing. The air diet for example, so called because dieters exist on, well, air! In other words nothing! Honestly, I’m not making this up, it really happens. There is a downside though; when rigidly followed you definitely are substantially thinner but unfortunately, categorically, decisively and incurably,
dead! Then there’s another one that caught my eye, the caveman diet. Yes, really, it’s true. By following the diet that cavemen allegedly would have eaten-no, not raw dinosaur sillysome think that they lose weight quickly. Actually, if you were to follow that diet strictly you would soon discover precisely why cavemen evolved pretty sharpish and got on with the job of inventing McDonalds! Interestingly, on the same theme, scientists have recently carried out a study to ascertain which dinosaur would have made the tastiest meal. Are you thinking the same thing as me right now...why? Why go to the trouble of investigating this, unless there really is a Jurassic Park somewhere, preparing some bizarre prehistoric foods for those extreme

The world’s scariest tourist attraction?
A 12ins wide cliff pathway in China has been declared among the world’s most dangerous tourist attractions. Daredevil visitors queue up to navigate the extremely narrow and treacherous walkway at a scenic mountain in China’s Shaanxi Province. The Chang Kong Cliff Road was built more than 700 years ago by hermits seeking ‘immortals’ they thought were living deep in the mountains. The walkway is only a foot wide and has been built clinging to the absolutely vertical cliff. One misstep could see you fall hundreds of meters down the stone valley. Those brave enough to naviga te the path have to wear a special safety harness.

• Petrol up to 2L from 85€ The size of a boot is extremely important, especially if you have a growing family, like me. And so it is disappointing that so many hatchbacks and saloons lack in this area. Even the Jaguar XJ, while having a seemingly long one does not have the necessary depth for bulky items. It is therefore refreshing to find that the Citroen C5 has a cavernous boot, large enough to swallow a cumbersome tandem pushchair as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. I am impressed. Externally the car’s rear doesn’t look ugly either, in fact on approaching it early one morning, from the side it looks like a Mercedes C-class thanks to the similar styling. It is also helpful that the rear seats split and fold as well as featuring a useful hatch for long awkward items to run the length of the car. When I tested the Jaguar XJ last week I was surprised that this model didn’t have split fold rear seats owing to the fact that they were electrically adjustable. My eyebrows remain suitably raised when I open the doors of the C5 and find the rear windows fitted with sun blinds that easily pull up and down. They effectively shield little passengers Harriett and Heidi from the bright sunshine that has finally decided to appear during the road test.
As regular readers will know, I do suffer from a bad back and when I tested the Jaguar XJ last week I foolishly over-used its seat massage function, which has subsequently resulted in severe back pain. Exercise, as always, is helping but this experience has made me even more critical of driver’s seats. The electrically adjustable and heated one in the Citroen could do with a better lumbar support but that’s my only complaint. The C5 is a capable family car and provides a comfortable ride. However, it is also quite a sporty saloon thanks to a sports mode function, which provides a more punchy performance while a sports suspension switch hardens the ride. The six-speed auto box can also be used as a manual for greater driving pleasure. A little way into the test I realise that the striking steering wheel rotates around a fixed column complete with cruise control and radio functions. This takes a little getting used
to, especially if lazy hands rest on it. I have not driven another car with such a unique steering wheel. It’s a good idea because for instance, in my wife’s old Fiat Punto, if you’re going round a roundabout and want to turn the volume down it can be tricky with the steering wheel mounted controls invariably being upside down. The C5 is also equipped with all the luxuries today’s motorists would expect including sat nav, all round electric windows and air conditioning. The rear window coated in early morning dew does take a long time to demist, though.
is a competent performer and that cavernous boot scores very highly with me.

Externally, when savouring the stylish C5 from the side there are the smallest welcome hints of the past from the distinctive CX, SM and GS models of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Good design does draw on the past, in my opinion.

Inside there is a feeling of being fairly low to the ground thanks its stance on the road, helping it feel quite sporty. It does seem to be quite a wide car and despite possessing reasonable spatial awareness
I find manoeuvring it a little tricky although I’m still able to reverse park into a fairly tight spot without trouble.

Email addresses – Part 1 - How to get one! Email is the mystic art of long distance communication. In day’s gone by, all you needed was a hollow log, a stick and a list of rhythms to get a message to cover distances. Today, we have email, and to some, it is still just as mystical. Before we get to today’s “how to” of the email section, it is necessary to let you know that there are 100’s of email providers out there each providing services that have slight differences, So I have picked a common one to start this series of articles with. “Horses for Courses” as my dad says. Outlook.com is the online version of Microsoft’s Office’s, now discontinued, flagship application for email and organisation. Being online has advantages and disadvantages, but that really is something for another day! Before you will receive or send an email you will need an account. All email providers will have an information page that will guide you through the creation of your email address, but to give you a head start, here are a few pointers. So to start with, you will have to think of a name, word or something that identifies you, and is unique to you. My email address is [canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk] – this one was created a few years ago before Microsoft “rebranded” their email system. The [canducomputing] isn’t used anywhere in the world as an email address! It is absolutely unique! If it was [trevor.spencer], for example, it just wouldn’t work as there are possibly 1000’s of them in the world [now there is a frightening thought :-)]. So you have successfully found your unique name and it has been accepted, you will be asked for a password. We have talked about passwords in previous articles but a brief reminder of what makes a good password. 1. Not the name of your pet, grandchild, wife/husband, house name, postcode, etc. these are all easy to guess. 2. 6 or, preferably more, characters. 3. A combination of UPPER and lower case letters, numbers and punctuation. Now you have a password that will defeat all but the most determined of crackers (note – not hackers – see previous article). From here you will be asked a few questions, such as: your name, location, age etc. If you are asked for personal details, such as bank details, telephone numbers, etc. Run Away and find another email provider because they don’t need to know any of this! Now you have an email address with a secure password and access to a way of sending and receiving correspondence, knowing that the email has arrived and best of all, not waiting a fortnight for it! Next time we will look at sending an email and, space permitting, attachments. So till next time, eat well, sleep well and if you are able, enjoy life... For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
Forum Golf Society 42 Forum Golf Society members played a 2 man No Scotch strokeplay pairs competition at Aguilon on May 31st, and once people grasped the concept (a combination of greensomes, foursomes & Texas Scramble) some fantastic scores were returned, with 17 of the 21 pairs under Par !
Leading the way in the main competition were John & Anne Holder with a net 58, 2 better than second placed Fran Elam & George Gibson, and Pat Garrigan
& Bob Cowan in third after both pairs scored net 60´s. Tony Morgan & Stan Whitty were fourth with a score of 62, whilst Peter Moreton & Roy Barker took the honours in the blue tee completion with a net 63. These results saw a change at the top of the leaderboard for Forum´s 2013 Golfer of the Year completion, with long time leader Brian Gyer finally being overhauled by the very consistent Bob Cowan, who now has a 2 point lead over Brian,
with Terry Davies, Tony Morgan, Terry Moore & Derek Manning all within touching distance
of bunkers because he certainly visits lots of them. Poor Terry Caddick is really causing all of his fellow players to scratch their heads in an effort to help him out of this really bad spell he has been in for some weeks. Evidently the suggestion to leave the clubs at home and walk the dog round the course was a non starter as he hasn’t got a dog. This week’s consensus of opinion was that he should just bring his ball retriever and sit by the water retrieving balls, he would fit in very nicely as The Aguilon Gnome!( don’t have a go at me T/C I only write what people say—well mostly!!.). We had 4 Twos, Geoff Smith and Nigel Greenwood on the 4th Alan Chippendale on the 8th and Terry Caddick on the 10th. Nearest the pins were Roger Kaye on the 4th and Syd Walker on the 12th, Syds ball was on the green but at least 30 meters from the hole making it the farthest

most of the fish as usual were small, weavers, red snappers, pandoras, pickerels, bogues, Spanish and Atlantic mackerel. Two more unusual fish were caught; a couches or red banded sea bream caught by Jeremy and a tub gurnard for me. See photo of me and my tub gurnard.

19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Thursday 30th May (how fast is this year going?) 15 members of the 19th Hole Golf Society interrupted the peaceful sleepy Aguilon Course to play a singles stableford competition. The course was in very good condition inspite of the recent tinning maintenance of the greens. I am sure that members of all Societies who play at Aguilon will join us in wishing J.J. the resort manager, a quick and full recovery from his heart attack. Although there was a little bit of wind about, conditions were ideal for golf but, yet again, no one really took full advantage. Only 4 players scored 30 or more points. Ralph Hunter who is positively thriving on his new handicap took 1st spot with 35 points, closely followed by Geoff Smith on 33. Nick Pogson had a diverse round ranging from well done Nick to oh my god!. Luckily he has a good technique for playing out
angling news
Boat Fishing. Possible record fish captured. A bass weighing 35lb has been banked off the coast of Spain. It is yet to be confirmed whether the massive fish is a new Spanish record or not but it is certainly the biggest to be caught from the country in recent years. A fish of this size will have been in the ocean for upwards of 40 years and will have reproduced many times. Sadly, most of our bass don’t have the opportunity to do this, as commercial vessels generally take everything, leaving little behind to grow on, or reproduce. I went out with ‘Orca Steve’ and was joined by mates ‘Blisters Steve’ and ‘Chef Jeremy’. There was a decent swell and so after a quick and useless troll we anchored in 130 feet opposite the Repsol garage. For the first two to three hours it was manic with multiple hook ups with a second of our weights hitting the sea bed. Trouble is
Mick ‘Shylock’ and his gang consisting of Bob and Tel returned to Garrucha for a day out fishing with Steve on a beautiful calm late May morning. There was not a ripple in the harbour and hardly a ripple beyond the harbour wall which made for a fantastic morning’s fishing. We drifted around an area near to the Repsol garage in 70 to 80 feet where the fish finder/sonar showed loads of fish on the screen. The lads were soon into fish catching some decent size pandoras to 1.1/2Lbs, pickerels, bogues, Spanish and Atlantic mackerel, twin banded and a horizontally striped fish that looked like a cow bream but I’ve never known one to be caught in water that deep. The fishing stayed brisk all day and they filled the fish well during the first hour with the rest being returned for another day. It was a memorable day with a great set of lads enjoying the craic! The following day ‘Kayak Steve’ and ‘Snapper Steve’ (The infamous Steve, Steve and Steve crew then) enjoyed the same calm conditions as the previous day that ‘Orca Steve’ had enjoyed and without time to waste he navigated directly

to the exact same spot which again showed plenty of fish, and they weren’t disappointed. Nice size pandoras, pickerels, bogues and mackerel again filled the fish well with all others being returned including many small red snappers which will hopefully return next year once they have grown a little. They even had a break for a sandwich and a chat as the fishing was so intense it was nice to have a break. (It’s not often you can say that about fishing) Shore Fishing: Shore angler Marc caught a tub gurnard from Garrucha beach. London Bill’ has been doing ok with palomete and big mackerel from the rocks at Macenas. Now I have my rods back I hope to get up that way too, I have some new 110g to 170g lures to lob out. Coarse Fishing: ‘Baza Barry’ has recently been concentrating his time fishing rivers north of Negratin and has been catching trout to 2lbs. He heard of a 5lber being caught in Lake Negratin but didn’t see it with his own eyes! The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. For up to date information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. Tight lines, Beachcomber John.
