SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
Bretón’s trial begins; jury warned ‘not to be influenced by media coverage’ A Córdoba man charged with the murder of his two small children started his trial this week amid mass media coverage, and his fate will be decided by a public jury of seven women and four men. They will be led by nine legal experts – seven women and two men – and two stand-in advisors in case of absence, who are both men. In a report by ThinkSpain, indicates that 46 forensic detectives and 98 witnesses will be called upon to give evidence, and the accused faces up to 40 years in jail if found guilty. Prosecutor María Ángeles Rojas, specialist in domestic and family violence, has stressed to the jury that they must not allow their decision to be influenced by the public hysteria and sensational press headlines which have been prolific since the disappearance of six-year-old Ruth and José, two, on October 8, 2011, and to rid themselves of any preconceived ideas. But she says she is ‘in no doubt’ José Bretón killed his children ‘in the cruellest way possible’ and that he burnt their bodies on a bonfire deliberately built to reach an extreme temperature and destroy the evidence. Rojas also warned the jury that what they would hear from the accused when he testifies today will be ‘a fairy story invented by him’ and ‘pure fantasy’. She says the defence still considers Bretón’s own version of events – that the children went missing in the Cruz Conde Park in Córdoba – is true and that ‘despite proof’, believes that the bones found in the remains of the fire were not those of the little girl and boy. Solicitor María del Reposo Carrero, acting for the children’s mother – who has also brought charges in her own name as well as those brought by the State – describes the alleged murder as ‘an atrocity’ of the first degree and that she has always struggled with the idea that ‘anyone would be capable of murdering their own children’. “This is not a case of a man
who lost control of himself and went crazy. This was not an act of madness or impulse, nor fear, nor self-defence, nor any other circumstance humanly comprehensible – we are in the presence of a very evil person,” Carrero stated. She considers that the ‘funeral pyre’ Bretón built in his parents’ orchard at their house in Las Quemadillas (Córdoba) was also aimed at his ex-wife and mother of his children, Ruth Ortiz. They were in the process of separating and Bretón had the

children, who lived in Huelva with their mother, for the weekend, and on the day they went missing he tried to call her three times – but she did not pick up the phone. Bretón’s solicitor José María Sánchez de Puerta says his client has been ‘crucified’ from the start and ‘condemned by public opinion’, being called ‘Satan’ and ‘a demon’, but that he was ‘not like that’. Sánchez de Puerta says he has often seen the accused crying, that he ‘constantly asks if anyone
knows anything about where his children are’ and that he has ‘never spoken of them in the past tense, only ever in the present’. The defence says Bretón ‘still believes Ruth and José are alive’ and that it is not known for certain if they are dead and if so, how they died, meaning it is ‘reckless’ to paint him as a cold-blooded murderer. After Ruth and José were reported missing by Bretón – who is said to have been ‘far too calm and matter-of-fact’ when he alerted police of their ‘disappearance’ – their mother
suspected her ex-husband had killed them and directed officers to their paternal grandparents’ orchard. A bonfire had been built using olive logs, which burn well, and large quantities of diesel and highly-combustible construction waste, in a makeshift brick ‘kiln’ with a metal table-top over it. This had the effect of raising the temperature to between 800ºC and 1,200ºC, as hot as a crematorium, thus destroying the bodies completely. As a result, forensics were unable to extract DNA from the bones they found. Police initially ruled out that the children had been burnt on the fire after a forensic claimed the bones were those of rodents, but Ruth Ortiz employed two private
3
forensic detectives who said the remains corresponded with human children – one of whom was female and aged around six-and-a-quarter. A total of five legal medicine and anthropology experts have examined the bones, and four of them came to the latter conclusion. Whilst Ortiz’s lawyer believes Bretón also intended to kill his ex-wife and burn her remains on the same fire, Bretón continues to deny the killing and urges authorities to keep up the search for the children, apparently believing them to be alive. If the bones are indeed those of Ruth and José, it is not clear how they died and whether they were still alive when they were placed on the fire

Nearly one in five cars failed their ITV, or compulsory annual technical revision test in 2012, according to the public sector firm which covers inspection franchises all over Spain. Safety defects – such as brakes, lights and tyres – not being up to a minimum standard, or emissions being too high in certain federal communities in Spain where regional law stipulates a maximum. A total of 5.93 million cases of serious safety faults were found during ITV testing, and 900,000 were rectified afterwards so the vehicles would go on to pass the examination. The actual percentage of cars which failed is 18.5, or just under a fifth. Although the number of failures was 0.8 per cent lower in 2012 than in 2011, the amount of dangerous defects found was 4.5 per cent higher. Inspectors say the most common problem was lights and indicators, accounting for 23.8 per cent, followed by tyres, wheels, the wheel axis or suspension – 21.4 per cent, or 3.2 per cent higher than in 2011 – and brakes, being 15.7 per cent of serious faults found. Nearly 12.3 million cars had minor faults which prevented them from passing the test, relating to lights and indicators (35.9 per cent), engines and transmission (18.9 per cent), the general condition of the car externally, bodywork, and chassis (16.5 per cent) and brakes (12.7 per cent).
The rise in the number of technical problems with cars found is thought to be partly due to the ongoing financial crisis, whereby vehicle-owners cannot afford basic repairs or services, and partly due to the new digital ITICI scheme run by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in conjunction with regional governments so that the traffic authorities can tell in an instant whether or not vehicles have a valid ITV. Information generated from the car itself while it is on the hoist at the ITV station is automatically picked up by the attached computer and sent in real time to the DGT, a new system in place to cut down on the proliferation of fake ITV stickers and pass sheets being sold on the black market. According to the DGT, if just 20 per cent of cars which were not put through their ITV and should have been had in fact been tested, a total of 7,100 road traffic accidents, 7,000 injuries and 110 deaths could have been avoided. Cars up to four years old do not normally need an ITV unless they are ex-hire cars, and the first ITV notice will be sent by ordinary post to the registered owner. At four years old and over, they are tested every two years, and at 10 years old and over they are tested annually. Vehicles must show a current ITV sticker in their windscreens which show the month and year when the next one is due.

rabies: first case in 35 years in spain
Spain is on red-alert as the first-ever case of rabies in dogs since 1978 has been detected. A report by ThinkSpain, the Ministry of Health insists that the risk of infection is ‘very low’, according to a report from Health Emergency and Alerts Coordination Centre in Castilla-La Mancha. According to the latter, a dog from Catalunya bit four children and an adult in various parts of the city of Toledo, and was found to
be infected with rabies. This condition affects the nervous system, is fatal and has no cure, but animals – dogs and cats – can be vaccinated against it. The health ministry says they have only ever seen very occasional cases of rabies in animals imported from Morocco and other North African countries in the Spanish-owned cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast, despite the fact that the
regional authorities there have set up a free-of-charge and compulsory rabies vaccination scheme. A control period of six months has been declared, during which the ministry has created restriction zones – one being a 20-kilometre radius from Toledo and nearby Argés, where the dog with rabies was found; parts of the Madrid town of Aranjez; Monzón (Huesca province) and four towns in Catalunya, where the

dog came from – Banyoles, Porqueres, Montcada i Reixac, and Piera. The affected dog is said to have been in all these places. Authorities will be closely monitoring domestic pets and wild animals in the area and calling for compulsory rabies vaccinations or dogs, cats, ferrets and other mammals. Dogs are the main transmitters of rabies, which is passed on to humans and other animals via bites or deep scratches, although humans have not been found to pass it on to other people. The ministry says that where a person has been bitten by a strange animal, they should immediately wash the wound under a strong jet of water and with soap for at least five minutes, and if possible, treat afterwards with disinfectant. In the event of any possible risk, animals should be taken straight to the vet and people should go to their nearest health centre or A&E department. A vaccination can be given after the wound has been sustained and is said to be reasonably effective if administered as soon as possible after the event. For the last 35 years, Spain has been a rabies-free zone, but vaccinations are often required for obtaining pet passports meaning most vets are able to supply them.
Thousands Of ‘Eurovegas’ Job Hopefuls Queue In Alcorcón
AT least 2,000 people queue up daily in Alcorcón, just outside Madrid, to hand their CVs over in the hope of getting a job at the forthcoming Eurovegas complex. Mayor David Pérez says that although the town has not even advertised for developers to start building the complex and the first phase is not expected to be finished until at least 2017, the council has received over 12,000 CVs already, has thousands of emails waiting to be dealt with and answered, and that on a typical day people from all over Spain queue for hours outside the town hall – frequently camping overnight to ensure they get in the door to be able to present their applications. It is fairly common to see as many as 2,000 people lined up down the street, Pérez explains. But he says Alcorcón is in a unique situation because, although it has been picked by US-based tycoon Sheldon Adelson, who owns Vegas Sands, the company which runs the world-famous casino city in Las Vegas, nothing further has happened and Alcorcón remains a sleepy, land-locked commuter town. Delays have already been experienced and so even the provisional deadline of 2017 may end up being put back, says Pérez, but he stresses that this is to be expected. “It’s like building an entire new town from scratch, something which would normally take between five and six years – but we’re more or less looking at developing a seven-million-square-metre complex overnight,” Pérez told interviewers live on TV on Antena 3, Spain’s Channel 3. When asked about whether or not the anti-smoking law may, or should, be changed to allow customers to light up in the future casino complex to encourage them to visit, Pérez says 2017 is a long way off as yet, and that this is of secondary importance to the jobs that may be offered by Eurovegas. “We have to safeguard these future jobs, that’s the most pressing priority,” the mayor explained. As yet, however, no jobs have been offered.

Valencia Social services: ‘worst in Spain’
Valencia, the Canary Islands, Madrid and Murcia have the worst social services in Spain, according to the Rights, Economy and Cover (DEC) Index for this year. A report by ThinkSpain states the research – which was in fact carried out by the State Association of Social Service Managers – said the level of development of the system is ‘irrelevant’ in these federal regions, and ‘weak, outdated and with negative perspectives’ throughout Spain as a whole. Overall, based upon quality criteria, the DEC Index 2013 graded the Spanish social services with 49.2 per cent, a clear failure, and says this is due to public funding cutbacks rather than general incompetence. In four years, nearly half a billion euros have been slashed from the State social services budget. Criteria used to evaluate the system included factors such as expenditure per head and the breadth of service provided for each region. Valencia came out with a poor six per cent, or 0.6 out of 10, way below the Canaries’ 20 per cent, or two out of 10. Madrid and Murcia scored just 2.75 and 2.8 out of 10, and other regions where the Association consider the system to be ‘irrelevant’
include Galicia (3.65 out of 10) and Andalucía (4.4 out of 10). Levels of development in the system were graded ‘weak’, ‘medium-to-low’, ‘medium’ and high, with only the border region of Navarra obtaining a ‘high’. Two other northern regions, La Rioja and the Basque Country, were classed as having a ‘medium’ level of evolution, and Extremadura and the Balearic Islands were considered ‘weak’, with all the rest falling into the ‘mediumto-low’ category. Speaking of Valencia, the Canaries, Madrid and Murcia, Association leader José Manuel Ramírez said: “You might as well say these regions have the poorest-quality social services in the whole of Europe.” A direct relationship was found between poverty levels in the 17 autonomous regions of Spain and the positive evolution in the system – the three communities with the best results were the only ones which have managed to reduce their levels of poverty during the country’s economic crisis, says research coordinator Luis Barriga. Out of the 17 communities, 10 have cut their budget for social services at a time when it is most needed because the numbers of people calling upon them – largely due
to housing issues, financial troubles and for help with feeding themselves – with the Balearics having made the harshest cuts at 36.39 per cent, or 43.40 euros per inhabitant. Castilla-La Mancha’s social services budget has been sliced by 26.74 per cent, and Galicia, the Canaries and Navarra between 19 and 16 per cent. Conversely, in the regions where the social services were found to be the poorest, funding has in fact increased – by nearly 15 per cent in Valencia, or 22 euros a head; between five and nine per cent in Madrid, La Rioja and Asturias; 2.7 per cent in Catalunya and 0.25 per cent in Cantabria – which in fact translates to an additional 10.37 euros per resident – and 1.16 per cent in Murcia, although here the budget has only increased by 31 cents per inhabitant. The research highlights ‘enormous imbalances’ between regions in spending on social services and on quality of the system. They say the postcode lottery means one social worker per 814 inhabitants in Navarra, or per 6,557 in Madrid, and 7.42 places in residential and nursing homes per 100 people aged over 65 in Castilla y León compared to 2.37 per 100 in
Web giant Google is to develop a global database of child abuse images to make it easier to delete them from the internet. Experts are developing technology similar to hashtags which digitally mark vile images found online. The firm is also offering more than £1million to independent software developers to produce tools to combat child porn, after being stung by criticism that it was not doing enough to stem the tide of internet filth. The new funding comes on on top of the £1million funding announced last week for the Internet Watch Foundation, which flags up illegal images. Google lets parents switch on a SafeSearch facility to filter out offensive material. But parents must turn it on themselves by clicking on the ‘settings’ icon at the top of the rage – it does not come on automatically. The firm has repeatedly been accused of not doing enough to use its dominance as the leader in internet searches to control and block access to illegal material. Web companies are under increased scrutiny following the conviction of Mark Bridger, who was jailed for life for the murder of five-year-old April Jones. He had collected a ‘library’ of sickening images by searching for simple terms on Google and Bing in the weeks before the
abduction. Both he and Stuart Hazell, who murdered 12-year-old Tia Sharp, had no previous convictions for sexual offences and progressed from viewing child porn on the internet to committing child murder. Since 2008 Google has used ‘hashing’ technology to tag known child sexual abuse images, which allows it to identify similar or duplicate images. But now it is developing more sophisticated systems to find and track images which have been copied and repeated on websites across the internet. Jacquelline Fuller, director of Google Giving, wrote in a blog: ‘Each offending image in effect gets a unique ID that our computers can recognize without humans having to view them again. Recently, we’ve started working to incorporate encrypted “fingerprints” of child sexual abuse images into a cross-industry database. This will enable companies, law enforcement and charities to better collaborate on detecting and removing these images, and to take action against the criminals.’ The firm has set up a £1.3million Child Protection Technology Fund to encourage the development of better tools to crackdown on disgusting images. It is in addition to a £3million funding commitment
to further child protection, and aid the global fight against child abuse and exploitation. Scott Rubin, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Google, said: ‘We have a zero tolerance attitude to child sexual abuse imagery online: ‘The fight to remove these images from the Internet is a global one, and we hope these measures will help in that important battle.’ It comes after David Cameron admitted he fears online porn could harm his children. The Prime Minister says he worries when any of his three children ‘grab hold of the iPad’ because they risk seeing obscene images. Mr Cameron is now pledging to ‘put the heat’ on web firms, making them do more to remove illegal child abuse images and protect children from legal porn. John Carr, UK Government adviser on child internet safety, said: ‘Google have stepped up. No one can argue about that. In all my time working in this space no company has ever devoted anything like this level of resources to working with civil society organizations to attack online child abuse images. This is an important moment. It should focus the minds of other industry leaders in relation to how they are going to join the fight.’
Murcia. It also means those on the waiting list to receive carers’ benefits for elderly, disabled or sick family members they look after fall between the two extremes of only 4.2 per cent of applicants not yet in receipt of these funds in Castilla y León, and 51.9 per cent of applicants in the Canary Islands. And home help for the infirm ranges from just 1.9 per cent in the Basque Country to 7.31 per cent in Madrid, or 36 hours a week in home care in Andalucía compared to just under six-and-a-half hours a week in Navarra.

A veterinary charity has unveiled some of Britain’s fattest pets as it gets ready for its annual slimming competition. A total of 21 podgy pets, which are collectively about 30 stone overweight, will take part in the contest run by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). The line-up of 13 dogs, five cats and three rabbits includes hefty hound Mizzy a Bullmastiff tipping the scales at 11 stone 4lbs (72kg) and flabby feline, Ulric, weighing in at two stone (12.65kg) - the two biggest ever finalists in PDSA’s Pet Fit Club. The pet slimming competition, which includes a six month diet and exercise programme, has been run for nearly a decade. PDSA vets and nurses are coaching the owners of each pet as they embark on their Pet Fit Club journey to shed the pounds and get back in shape. Research from the annual PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report has revealed that more than 18 million pets are being fed deadly diets, putting them at risk of a miserable life and an early grave. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Elaine Pendlebury said: “Obesity is one of the biggest welfare issues affecting pets in the UK today and it is entirely preventable. The good news is that it’s never too late to make a positive change to improve a pet’s quality of life.”

As promised to Sister Antonia, earlier in the year “Carrie’s Dusty Boots”, the leading Line Dance Demonstration Group in Almería, fulfilled their obligation to provide a Fiesta for the children of the Vera Orphanage Hogar San Agustin on Sunday 9th June. The Line Dancers with much assistance from the Albox Boxers Golf Society and Lyndsay Cheeseman provided a fabulous party for 18 children plus their guardians. “Carrie’s Dusty Boots” provided entertainment by performing two of their tribute sets to films of the “Blues Brothers” and “Grease”. The ladies of the group also provided a magnificent spread of food that was enjoyed by the orphanage’s as a buffet. Special mention must be made of Lyndsay Cheeseman , a supporter of “Carrie’s Dusty Boots”, who had baked three trays of fancy cakes for the enjoyment of the children who were aged between 3 and 17 years of age. In return, two of the orphanage children did a demonstration of Moroccan Salsa Dancing. The four hour fiesta also included Line Dances in which the children were encouraged to participate and some favourite party dances such as the Macarena and the Birdie Song. All the children were provided with cowboy hats and neckerchiefs by “Carrie’s Dusty Boots” and the Albox Boxers Golf Society donated funds to provide every child with a gift bag of sweets and presents appropriate to each individual child’s age and gender. The afternoon was great fun for the children of the orphanage and was thoroughly enjoyed by the orphanage carers and the members of “Carrie’s Dusty Boots”. For further information on “Carrie’s Dusty Boots” please contact Carrie Green on telephone number 627 279 584. Report: Richard B. We only had 16 people taking part this week for a variety of reasons. However the 16 who did play enjoyed glorious sunshine. So much so that Sharon Slyhas burned her arms as she forgot to put any sun tan lotion on. This week it was a Yellow Ball competition with 2 hidden holes. The winners with 123 points were Hans Ooft, Heinz Hajek, Elaine MacMillan (2nd week in a row) and Sharon Sly (chocolates last week). Last place and chocolates went to Roisin Andrew, Brian Downey, Albert Taylor and Mick Moran with 113 points. It was a shame for Brian as he likes the cherry chocolates and it was nut ones for the last place team this week. Nearest the pin was won by Nina Taylor with a distance of 1.75m. Thanks to Mr President for sorting out the prize giving this week as Jacqui and I were unavailable. Please note that there will be no FGS Friday Golf at Almerimar this coming week (21 June 2013) as we are entering a team in the Top Banana competition at La Envía.
Based in Almerimar, we are always looking for new players and have training sessions starting at 21.30h every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Players of all abilities welcome. The team is very sociable and after have players from beginner to experienced. We are currently in Andalucia Regional Division 2 and just about to start the second phase of the league. Europe’s ExoMars missions ‘on track’
Europe’s plans to explore Mars with a satellite in 2016 and a rover in 2018 have taken a big step forward with the signing of new industrial contracts, according to a report by the BBC The deals fully fund the orbiter, which will look for methane and other trace gases in the planet’s atmosphere, and keep the mobile robot on track to meet its launch deadline. Known jointly as ExoMars, the missions have come perilously close to cancellation on a number of occasions. They now look much more secure. “It will still be tough, I have to say that. But I am more confident than I have been in a long time that ExoMars will now happen,” Prof Alvaro Gimenez told reporters. The director of science at the European Space Agency (Esa) signed contracts on Monday totalling 216m euros with the missions’ prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space (TAS). The majority of the funds,
146m euros, should ensure the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is ready for launch in January 2016. It should also guarantee the satellite’s descent module is completed on time. This will be released at Mars to prove Europe’s ability to land on the Red Planet. And it will test critical technologies - such as radar and guidance systems - needed for the safe touchdown of the rover two years later. Monday’s deals, signed at the Paris Air Show, allocate a further 70m euros for the 2018 vehicle. Much more will be needed to finish its construction, and Esa member states have yet to agree finally how to fund ExoMars’ global budget, which is expected to top 1.2bn euros. For the moment, however, the missions are on the right trajectory. “ExoMars is on track today and we can all be very pleased with this result,” said TAS CEO Jean-Loic Galle. “For sure, I can tell you that
Thales Alenia Space is fully committed to this project. Our people are mobilised and highly motivated,” he told journalists. Key to the schedule is the participation of the Russian space agency (Roscosmos), which stepped in to partner Europe on ExoMars when the Americans abruptly scaled back their involvement because of budgetary problems within the US space agency (Nasa) in 2012. Russia is providing two of the four instruments for the 2016 orbiter, as well the 1.8tonne landing mechanism that aims to place the rover gently on Mars in early 2019. Roscosmos will also pick up the bill for the two Proton rockets that will launch both missions from Earth. “These contracts make ExoMars more and more of a reality,” commented Esa director general JeanJacques Dordain. “I shall not go over the difficulties we had in putting ExoMars together. It took some time and energy
Spanish couple kidnapped in Colombia to marry
A Spanish couple held hostage for a month in Colombia and who were freed on Saturday morning now have something else to celebrate – they have decided to get married. Ángel Sánchez Fernández, 49, a member of the Guardia Civil mountain rescue unit in Jaca, Asturias, proposed to María Concepción Marlaska Sedano, 43, during a press conference at the Spanish ambassador’s residence in Bogotá.
“I am going to do something I thought I was never going to do, and even less so in these circumstances – and that’s to ask her to marry me. I hope she won’t say no,” Ángel stated in front of a room full of international reporters, to which María Concepción laughed and replied, “this is like a TV contest.” “Will you be my wife? Will you marry me?” asked Ángel, and María Concepción replied with an emphatic, “yes!” She told reporters that their month in captivity had brought them closer because ‘it’s essential to work as a team’ and ‘call on all your strength’ in such a situation. They tried to support each other to prevent the other person from becoming depressed, María Concepción explained. Ángel continued, “I wanted to say something very important, and for it to be heard in public I’m alive thanks to her, and I want the whole world to know it, because
without her I’d have gone crazy.”
María Concepción says she is very much looking forward to seeing her colleagues and friends, to going back to work and, above all, to seeing her family, doing the same things as before she and Ángel were abducted and attempting to recover gradually from the trauma, whilst Ángel says he is keen to see them going back to being ‘normal people’ with ‘plans, hopes and dreams’. The couple were kidnapped whilst driving to the Cabo de la Vela nature reserve in the department of La Guajira, close to the Venezuelan border, on May 17. Their captors deliberately provoked an accident, originally intending to steal their belongings and their hired car, but when they heard their accents and realised they were Spanish, decided to kidnap them and demand a ransom. Police in Madrid arrested the two men who collected the funds and were due to transfer them to the kidnappers after Colombian authorities decided the money should be handed over in Spain in order to split the culprits up, and lead to tracing the whereabouts of the ones who were holding María Concepción and Ángel hostage. The ransom money – 60,000 euros in cash – was also recovered from the arrested men’s flat in Madrid.
from a lot of parties, in particular from industry. It was not easy to move from an Esa/Nasa co-operation to an Esa/Roscosmos cooperation.” Mr Dordain said he intended to sign at the air show on Tuesday what he termed a “matrix of responsibility” with the Roscomos chief, Vladamir Popovkin. This would outline in fine detail just what was expected of Europe and Russia on the two missions, he explained. ExoMars was formally initiated in Europe by ministers in 2005, and with Monday’s contracts Esa has now committed 643m euros on developing the technology. The 2016 TGO will try to track down the sources of methane that have been observed at Mars. The gas’s presence in the atmosphere is intriguing and could conceivably indicate biological activity on the planet. A major role for the satellite also will be to provide the communications relay for the 2018 rover. This is one aspect the Americans have
agreed to continue supply.
ground.
The six-wheeled ExoMars rover will look for signs of past or present life. It will do something no robot has ever done at the planet that is to drill 2m into the
Mars’ harsh environment it is cold, dry and flooded by high levels of ultraviolet light - means microbes are more likely to survive in the sub-surface, if they exist at all.

Crackdown on e-cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes are to be regulated as medicines, the UK’s drugs watchdog announced this week. Although some countries have banned them, e-cigarettes can at present be bought without restriction in the UK. From 2016 they will have to be licensed as nicotine-containing products. But they will still be available over the counter, similar to how paracetamol and aspirin are sold. GPs will be able to prescribe them – in the same way nicotine gum and patches are – as an aid to quitting smoking. Around 1.3million Britons use battery-powered e-cigarettes, which turn nicotine into vapour to be inhaled, avoiding the harm caused by tobacco

smoke. But the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) decided they must be regulated to make them ‘safer and more effective’. Its research found nicotine levels delivered often differed from the amount stated on the label and varied from batch to batch. Other studies have suggested that some ecigarettes contain potentially harmful contaminants, the MHRA said, and there were anecdotal reports of a user suffering facial burns after one exploded. Although using e-cigarettes is safer than smoking tobacco ‘the long-term safety of these components to the consumer remains unknown’, it said.

A depression coming in via the north-western region of Galicia will bring generalised showers and a fall of between 6ºC and 10ºC, lasting until at least Thursday, says the State meteorological agency, AEMET. Sunday was reportedly hotter than average for the time of year, with temperatures in the shade ranging from 35ºC to 38ºC in Andalucía, Murcia, Extremadura and the south of the Comunidad Valenciana, and around the 30ºC mark elsewhere in the country with the exception of the north coast, where thunder storms were forecast. Rain and thunder are expected to hit the rest of
Spain by mid-week. The cooler and wet climate is not expected to pass until Thursday, but once the official first day of summer arrives – the season change being due at exactly 05.04hrs on Friday, June 21 – the mercury will soar once again and the weather will be consistent for the time of year, meaning that inland in the south the temperature will shoot up to the high 30s and in the low to mid 30s on the south and east coast and in the Balearic Islands. AEMET says the weather data it has to hand at present points to Spain having a ‘normal’ summer, with intense heat and little or no rainfall, despite fears earlier this month that the season would be considerably colder than usual.

A seven-year-old boy has died, in the northern region of Aragón, after he and a group of friends were playing at ducking each other in the swimming pool on their residential complex. He was taken into the paediatric intensive care unit in Zaragoza hospital on Thursday in a critical condition after he stopped breathing and his heart failed. Paramedics who rushed to the scene managed to revive him, but a few hours after he was admitted, doctors broke the news to the parents that the child was already brain-dead due to the prolonged period of lack of oxygen and circulation. He had spent several minutes with no heartbeat and not breathing before ambulance staff were able to revive him. Police investigations found that although the parents were very nearby and were keeping constant watch over their children in the pool, they did not realise what had happened until they saw one of them pulling an unconscious youngster out of the water. Regional law in Aragón states that a lifeguard on duty in communal pools is not compulsory for those which are less than 240 square metres in size and 1.6 metres (5’3”) deep.

Q: I have a mortgage variable mortgage with BBVA with a minimum interest clause in my mortgage of 3.5% What do I have to do to have the minimum interest clause removed so that I can take advantage of the all time low interest rates?
A . Nothing. The BBVA bank in result of the sentence by our supreme court dated 09/05/2013 has decided to remove all clauses of minimum interest and apply the differential above the euribor with no consideration to the minimum clause. In practice this will mean that if you have have a variable mortgage of for example euribor + 1%, which is average, you will now pay aprox. 1.5% interest instead of 3.5%, which is the minimum interest clause that they introduced into your mortage document. They will remove all minimum interest clauses with effect from the 9th of May. Position of other banks since the sentence: Cajamar: The same position as BBVA. NCG Banco: The same as BBVA. Banco Popular(Banco de Andalucia):In principle they say that they will not be removing the clause. Banc Sabadell: The same as Banco Popular. Kutxabank: The same as Banco Popular. Bankinter : They are not affected as they claim they have never introduced this clause in their mortgages. Santander: The same as Bankinter. I recommend taking a look at your mortgage. If the clause is included and the bank does not remove it automatically, speak to your bank manager about it being removed.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
Reader Comment: Illegal building continues in Albox
A British couple have taken their neighbour to court for spitefully cutting their water pipes and stealing their taps. The neighbour, who owns a cafe/bar, ordered his staff to cut the water pipes and remove the taps when he found out that he was being fined for building illegally. These pipes and taps are the main supply of water the couple have. He has also sent staff to intimidate and threaten the couple who have been trying to get the local police and Albox Town Hall to do something about the illegal building and the illegal outdoor music that the cafe/bar owners - who have a license for a cafe/bar WITHOUT music - have been having over the last 3 years. The illegal building carried out by this bar owner, and the authorities inconsistent way of dealing with it, is the disturbing undercurrent to this case. The bar owners, a local family, finished massively extending their business premises 3 years ago without proper licenses. They are using these extensions, including an overhanging terrace, for business without licenses and we presume without public indemnity insurance which would need building licenses to be in place. The Junta de Andalucia has ignored this illegal building by passing responsibility to the Diputacion of Almeria. The Diputacion has said they can’t do anything about it as it is the responsibility of Albox Town Hall, and Albox Town Hall quickly pushed through the application to legalise the buildings over the Christmas holidays in 2012, even though the buildings contravene several building laws. All this has happened within the last 4 years under the nose of the same authorities who have been compounding the plight of thousands of British who unwittingly bought illegal houses in the area. If it’s so easy to legalise buildings why doesn’t Albox Town Hall do this for non locals as well? In contrast, the bar owners were fully aware when they commissioned the build 4 years ago that it was without the proper licenses. In fact the owner laughingly said to the couple years ago when he was building yet another illegal house, that he’d “prefer to pay the fines as that was cheaper than getting the proper licenses”. It would seem, that as long as you’re local, you can do pretty much what you like and be supported by the authorities. The fine he has had to pay is indeed a lot
less than the tax payable if he’d done it legally.>> The couple are waiting to hear the outcome of the court case which could take a few weeks, although they don’t hold out much hope of the court finding in their favour. The bar owner’s lawyer presented all sorts of ‘statutes’ supposedly proving that they’re allowed to cut water pipes. But considering the President of the water society lied in court about his connections with the bar owner - he said he had no connection to him even though they are in fact brother in laws - how can any statutes be relied upon to be true? The couple have spoken to many others in the area who are members of this water society, including an ex committee member, all have said that the President, nor other members, have the right to do what they’ve done. When trying to get proof of their legal rights to another well in the area, the book the couple signed has been mysteriously impossible to get hold of, the rumours are that the President/ brother in law has it. Incidentally, after a mix-up over swapping timings of the couples’ fill a few years ago they bought water from the owner of the bar for 3 1/2 years. He denied this in court. As I write this article the bar owner is adding a third floor to his house - what’s the chance that this has building permission? At the same time AUAN are spending thousands taking one case to European court to try to highlight the problem that thousands of British have with illegally built houses in the area, where’s the justice in that? The bar owner is threatening to sack his staff due to lack of business/work and blaming it on the couple so inciting hatred against them - whilst spending thousands extending his already palacial house. Some say that ‘this is just the way things are here’, I say that with this sort of thinking we would still be living in caves - no offence intended to those who live in cave houses! We wait to find out what the court will make of this case, lets hope they come down on the side of common decency and justice. By Christy Cappelman

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 Diabetes? Type 1 Diabetes affects the body such that it can no longer produce insulin Often referred to as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes is a form of diabetes mellitus that is most common in children but can be diagnosed at any age. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that permanently destroys beta cells in the pancreas, meaning that the body can no longer produce insulin. People with type 1 diabetes therefore require regular insulin delivery to manage their diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, is commonly thought to be caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger, which causes the immune system to target and kill off its own insulin producing cells. Type 1 diabetes symptoms should be acted upon immediately, as without treatment this type of diabetes can be life-threatening. Symptoms include: Above average thirst, Feeling tired, Needing to pee regularly, Losing weight, Skin infections, Genital itchiness Type 2 Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus Type 2) Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, also known as type 2 diabetes, is a globally common metabolic disorder affecting over 2 million people in the UK alone. Once called adult-onset diabetes (and also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus - NIDDM), type 2 diabetes is now also found in young adults and children. Type 2 diabetes occurs when insulin is not used effectively by the body resulting in Insulin resistance and Hyperglycemia In advanced stages, type 2 diabetes mellitus may lead to damage to insulin producing cells leading to insulin deficiency. Meaning becoming a type 1 diabetic. Type 2 diabetes is a serious health condition. Following pre-diabetes or metabolic disorder, type 2 diabetes can potentially be avoided through diet and exercise. Such a diagnosis can be viewed as a useful, if urgent, wake up call. If resistance to insulin increases, people with type 2 diabetes may need to take oral anti-diabetic medications, or take insulin to keep their blood sugar levels stable. Treatment typically includes diet modification and control, regular and appropriate exercise, home blood glucose testing and in some cases, oral medication.

Disabled Drivers Fined For Parking In Disabled Spaces
The European Automobile Commission (CEA) has complained about disabled drivers being fined – for parking in disabled spaces. A report by Think Spain indicates a recent case that saw a driver with a disability who had left his car in a designates space, and had a card to prove his condition, getting a refund on his fine after getting a parking ticket in Madrid. According to the CEA, its legal department works daily with disabled drivers helping them to appeal against fines given for parking correctly in places set aside for them. It mainly happens in Madrid, but other town halls are beginning to follow the same practices. The fines are based upon the fact that the traffic wardens say they cannot tell at a glance whether the disabled passes are genuine. But the CEA says this goes against the assumption of ‘innocent until proven guilty’, and that the entire community of disabled drivers should not be punished just because a few able-bodied people forge disability stickers for their cars. Instead, authorities should be clamping down on these fraudsters rather than treating genuine cases as though they may be, the CEA adds. They say as a result of this ‘precaution’, it is the disabled driver who has to go through the costs and headaches of proving his or her innocence by visiting the traffic office in person and providing photocopies of their disability sticker stamped by a notary to show their authenticity. The whole point of showing a disability sticker in the windscreen is so that the driver can park in spaces designated for him or her and get in and out safely, without having to worry about coming back to find the car towed away or a parking ticket on it, stresses the CEA. They refer to a case of one of their members who had a disabled sticker in the name of her son, a minor, and was fined for parking in a disabled space. She appealed against the fine and identified herself as the mother of the child in whose name the sticker was in, but each complaint letter to Madrid city hall was rejected and they continued to send fine notices addressed to the disabled boy. The family eventually had to go through the courts, involving time and expense, to get the fine annulled and, during the hearing, the judge said the fine notice should have been archived immediately.

Over six in 10 homes in Spain were purchased without a mortgage in the first quarter of this month, suggesting that the housing market is far from on its knees and not everyone has been hit by the recession.
In a report by ThinkSpain, according to the General Council of Notaries, a total of 60.8 per cent of buyers dispensed with mortgage-lenders when buying properties between January and March inclusive. But not all of these were bought outright in cash – many purchasers bypassed the banks by taking out loans directly from the developer in the case of new builds or properties that have never had an owner, or took advantage of the ‘rent-to-buy’ scheme which many developers are now offering in a bid to get shot of their plethora of empty homes. This way, they manage to avoid problems with trying to get finance from banks which are reluctant to lend money in the current economic climate, and do not have to worry about these
entities repossessing their homes if they lose their jobs and cannot find work in time to save themselves from defaulting on their monthly repayments.
According to the judicial council, nearly 44,000 properties were repossessed last year alone. This is almost one home per thousand residents in Spain, or around 20 to 30 in the average-sized market town, five or 10 in a large village or roughly 100 in a small city. And banks are no longer offering 100-per-cent loans unless the property purchased is one of their own which has been previously repossessed – despite the fact that the plummeting Euribor, or Eurozone interest rate, means mortgages are now cheaper than ever. Commissions are also higher and many future mortgage customers are obliged to take out multiple insurance policies, including life and redundancy cover, and even pension plans with the
lender.
But the EU’s recent verdict which found ‘minimum interest rate’ clauses illegal means more homeowners will now be able to benefit from the historically-low Euribor, which stands at 0.5 per cent. Until now, many banks set clauses in mortgage contracts which put a minimum interest rate on repayments of an average of 2.0 to 3.12 per cent, meaning even if the Euribor dropped below this figure, they would not benefit from cheaper monthly quotas – but no upper limit was placed on these payments, so if the Euribor went up to 15 per cent, this is the rate mortgageholders would face. Banks which have been pulled up over ‘minimum rate’ clauses, including the BBVA and Cajamar, have agreed to drop these, but few have done so retroactively which mean no refund is likely to be due. On the flip side, however, affected homeowners will now see their monthly repayments plunge to new lows.
The luggage that’s impossible to lose
Losing your luggage on a flight could soon be a thing of the past after an airline developed a bag that is impossible to lose. According to a report by Mail Online, aircraft maker Airbus has helped develop technology which could eliminate the problem of missing baggage, a problem that costs the aviation industry nearly £2 billion a year. According to the latest industry figures, about four pieces of luggage will be lost on the average Boeing 747 flight. Passengers are most likely to lose a bag when changing flights - especially if the connection time is short. One of the major reasons for luggage being lost is when the paper tags carrying the bar code are ripped off as cases are shunted along conveyor belts to the aircraft. It was this which led to the loss of thousands of bags by
British Airways following the chaotic opening of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in March 2008. The prototype luggage technology, known as Bag2Go, involves embedding a satellite tracker and bar code display on to the suitcase. Using a smartphone, a passenger sends details of their flight to the airline which in turn sends back a bar code which is shown on the display unit of the case. Each bar code is unique carrying details of the traveller, flight and destination. Once on board a plane, a passenger can use a smartphone app to check that their bag is in the hold and alert flight crew if it’s not there. Should the bag be loaded on to the wrong aircraft, the combination of satellite
technology and the bar code means that it will be easily traced. It will enable the case to be re-routed to the correct destination enabling the luggage to be returned to its rightful owner. At the same time, the passenger can keep track of the bag with the help of a mobile phone application. The app has a number of functions, including alerting a passenger if somebody tries to tamper with the bag. The technology is still being developed by Airbus, T-Systems - a telecommunications company and RIMOWA, a suitcase manufacturer. Passengers will be able to buy the bags, although renting them is another possibility being considered. The advanced technology means that there may be no luggage carousels in our future at all, as the satellite technology could mean bags are transported independently and directly from your house, to the airplane’s hold, and finally to your hotel.

Jobs...Alright for Some THREE CHARITIES WORKING With Russian homebuyers predicted to overtake Britain’s bargain hunters, situation vacant TOGETHER FOR THE ANIMALS opportunities are opening up for Russian speakers Russian language advertising is now commonplace throughout the Costa regions. Many companies, eager to tap into the Russian speaking market, are setting out their marketing information in Russian. Antonio Mayor. Benidorm Hotel Association says, “We have a goldmine we have yet to exploit.” Although Russians learn English at school, it is estimated that only 4.9% are classified as English speakers. Marketing consultant and translator Ukrainianborn Nadezhda Burlikova says, “It should also be remembered that the Russian language is in everyday use in much of Eastern Europe.” Based in Torrevieja, Nadia, who recently took on a major translating assignment for a beautyrelated clinic, says Russian will soon be as commonplace as is English. Nadezhda has received a number of enquiries from Russian speaking jobseekers. Able to put businesses in touch with Russian writers, Nadia can be contacted at accessrussian@yahoo.co.uk or 662 067 490.
June 2nd saw the Helping Hands Auction/BBQ fundraising event at Restaurante/Bar La Fuente in Purias, Lorca. In addition to items donated to the charity, including “Big Boys Toys” machinery items, many others were sold on behalf of friends and supporters who attended the fun filled afternoon which was followed by a BBQ Buffet. Also attending the event were the two other dedicated charities, Lorca Animal and For the Love of Dogs and Cats in Spain, who came down from Benidorm to support the event. The three charities are now working closely together, each bringing different skills to the relationship, which ultimately is making a huge difference to the lives of abandoned and ill treated animals in Spain.
The event successfully raised 1000 euros which included fundraising of 200 euros from the UK by HH member, 13 year old Sian Medley and a generous donation of 100 euros by Jean and Peter Cowan. Helping Hands would like to thank all those who came along to support the event. Their next large fundraiser is their Party Night on Saturday 21 September, with the Charity’s favourite artistes, SHOWADDYWADDY LEGEND, winners of the Coastriders Best Tribute Act of the Year. The boys will be helping the charity celebrate it’s two year anniversary. For further information regarding this and the Charity in general please telephone Linda on 968 48 29 48.

There is good and bad news from the dog shelter. Two of the ‘Tomato puppies’, Raf and Kumato, so called because they were found wired up in a tomato box, have been adopted. Three of the six ‘X-men’ puppies, found by a policeman in a garbage container have been adopted. Tragically two have died but another one is still at the shelter waiting for a home. Last week, however, 12 new dogs entered the shelter, among them eight more puppies found in a box. This week three puppies were also left close to the shelter tied up in a sack. The volunteers work relentlessly to save the lives of these dogs, but they feel like Sisiphus, who according to Greek mythology was King of Ephyra. He was punished for his sins, by being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down. He was condemned to repeat this action forever. When there are successes, seeing the dogs with their new families makes up for everything. A big step forward was made last week, in giving the dogs a better and a more comfortable life,
when DIPUTACION DE Almeria delivered 75 trees, free of charge, to provide the dogs with shade. Twenty volunteers turned up early in the morning last Saturday to carry out the huge task of planting 40 of the trees and watering them. These trees will be invaluable, giving the dogs some shade during the coming hot summer months. The dogs were very excited and inquisitive and quite a few left their mark on their new surroundings. Four of the dogs escaped through an open gate during the planting of the trees and enjoyed a sightseeing tour around the shelter before being captured and returned to their own billet. Another tree planting session is planned for the remaining 30 trees, as soon as the Town Hall lends the dog shelter a machine to make holes in some extremely hard and stony ground. The SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR will always be happy to see you so you can meet these lovely animals and hopefully adopt one. ROQUETAS DE MAR RESULT OF THE 3rd OPEN POOL TOURNAMENT
THE LODGE in Roquetas de Mar provided the venue for the 3rd ROYAL BRITISH LEGION OPEN POOL TOURNMANENT last Thursday evening, 13th June. The event was organised by the RBL with a proportion of the proceeds benefiting this year’s POPPY APPEAL. The event was won by the current champion, Ian Reeves. There were no restrictions on entrants, so RBL members, non-members and members of the local community were welcome to play. The playing facilities for the night were very kindly donated, free-of-charge, by Juan Pedro Reyes, the proprietor of THE LODGE. Only seven players turned up, but most contestants enjoyed the evening and the games, which were played in good spirit, with some very keenly contested. A mini tournament was held between the first round losers to find a winner, so that there would be four players to contest the quarter-finals. That person was George, who was then drawn against Ian, the eventual winner of the tournament. The final was played on a ‘best of three frames’ basis between Ian and Juan, where Ian went on to win 2-0. Both players received cash prizes from Barry Thomas, the RBL ‘2013 POPPY APPEAL’ organiser. See photo of the prize winners, IAN REEVES and JUAN PEDRO REYES. Many thank again to Juan and his staff at “The Lodge” for providing the playing facilities free-of-charge and making it an enjoyable night for the magnificent seven! The next tournament is likely to be held in the autumn, when some of the regulars return for the winter sun.

my ambition... “Humans say such stupid things, such as – it’s a dog’s life. Don’t they realise how difficult it is being a dog? That is why I have an ambition – I’m going to be a human. I know I can do this, because I have seen it on the telly – you are what you eat. Now I’m not stupid, I know that if I eat chicken I will not turn into a chicken, or if I eat fish I will not turn into a fish – that would be horrible – living in the water - eugh. I am muy inteligente, everybody says so, so I know that if I eat human food then I will turn into a human. I keep telling this to my English Mum but she still keeps feeding me dog food. ‘You’re a dog’ she says ‘you eat dog food.’ I know, but how will I ever turn into a human if she keeps feeding me dog food? But when I am a human I will make some changes. Firstly I will have a key, so I can open doors whenever I like and I will not have to ask a human to open them for me – I will go in and out as many times as I like

Is Anybody There?
Somebody mentioned ‘Shuffling off this mortal coil’ on a TV play the other evening and then shortly after, it cropped up in a book I was reading. We all know pretty much what it means and I have heard it a million times before, but I wondered where such an odd expression came from and so I looked it up. Had I paid better attention at school I would have known, because as with so many expressions, sayings and idioms that we use today, it was predictable I suppose that this was yet another pearl of wisdom that dripped off the pen of old Will Shakespeare and is part of the ‘To be or not to be’ monologue from Hamlet. I have always been fascinated by the question: other than a knees-up at the local pub, what happens after we have pegged it? Is there something else beyond this life? Does the end mean the end . . . unlike yet another Status Quo ‘farewell’ tour? And if there is something to look forward to after death, will that include Coronation Street and Jehovah’s Witnesses interrupting our lunch?
The desire for answers on this subject is, not surprisingly, commensurate with advancing years and is partly due to the desire for knowledge, and partly I suspect, out of sheer panic because the old bloke in the robe and carrying a scythe is just waiting for his cue and we had better get our act together. After a lifetime of searching for answers, I know what my thoughts are on the subject, but you don’t want to hear about that and besides, we all have to come to our own conclusions in our own way. Suffice it to say I am more comfortable with the phrase: life after life. It’s a very strange thing about us humans that the only certainty during our worldly stopover is that at some point we all go the same way and yet for most of us, it’s the one thing in life that we find hardest to come to terms with. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between what we want to believe because it gives us comfort, and what is a firmly held belief, instilled through faith or pure gut feeling. And as Woody Allen once said: It’s not that I’m afraid to die, I just don’t want to be there when it happens. There cannot be many people who, during their lifetime, have not at some point experienced odd goings on that would indicate that something other worldly is afoot. Things like déjà vu; accurate dreams of forthcoming events;

viewpoint whenever I like, especially at night!. I will sit on the sofa if I want to, and no-one will turn me off – I’ve never heard a human tell another human to ‘get off the furniture.’ I will have a proper bed in a bedroom. Imagine having a whole room just for your bed, how posh is that? I will get rid of the coche. I don’t like the coche – it takes my family away. They say ‘look after the house Lucy’ and they get in it and go away. If they didn’t have the coche then they couldn’t go away and leave me behind. They make me go in it sometimes. They take me to the torturehospitalvet. They put me in a cage in the coche, and as soon as it starts moving I am sick but they say I have to go to the torturehospitalvet or I will get sick – well I’ve just been sick, so what are they talking about? Better go now and eat my nice dog biscuits. She says they are nice, but I’ve never seen her eat one, so how does she know? Lucero Rodriguez Biggs”
apparitions and near death experiences – the last of which has always been of particular interest to me. My good friend Dougie once claimed to have had an out-ofbody experience, but I doubt very much that’s what it was. I was there at the time and he wasn’t so much plastered, as rendered, pebble dashed and finished off with two coats of Dulux emulsion. It was more a case of an out-ofhead experience. It is said that a sure sign of a much loved departed friend or family member trying to reassure us that all is well on the other side, is the discover y of a white feather in the most inexplicable of places. It had me wondering if anyone has ever taken the trouble, on finding one of these celestial tokens, to have an expert examine the DNA to discover its source. I mean, it would surely give us some answers or at the very least, provide some intriguing possibilities. If it turned out to be from a turkey or a pigeon, then what would that tell us? Well plenty I suppose, if the dearly departed had been either an employee at Bernard Matthews or a pigeon fancier; but if the DNA proved to be from some hitherto undiscovered species then hey . . . perhaps a bit of Angels wing. No
seriously. My late Mum always kept an array of small pot plants on the window sills, including a Christmas cactus. I cannot be sure how long she had this particular plant, but I remember it sitting in its designated spot in the front room window seemingly forever. It always looked healthy enough, but to my Mother’s perpetual disappointment, it never flowered – not at the designated time during the festive season, nor at any other time during the year. Then after her passing and on the morning of her funeral, we came down stairs to find it a mass of crimson flowers, e v e n though this was in June. It was the only time during that whole heartbreaking period that my old Dad lost it, with a mixture of tears of joy and sadness. The message could not have been clearer.

The Olive Mill riot and siege lasted the best part of a weekend. Shattered windows, blackened walls and burning outbuildings, in fact all the requisites for a really successful riot festooned the Calle Mirador. To say a riot is successful would be a contradiction anywhere else apart from Alqueria. The people of Alqueria have honed and fashioned the riot to make it almost an art form. It is as well practised as a fire-drill but a lot more enjoyable with no shortage of participants. Those who are too old or timid to join-in, watch from upstairs windows offering advice and encouragement. The cobblestones which make up the Calle Generalissimo have three sets of numbers etched on their undersides. The first set is their position in the barricade, this is to aid rapid deployment. The second, the distance which should be achieved when the stone is hurled at an angle of forty-five degrees by an average male between the ages of twenty-five and forty. The third, its position back in the street so things can get back to normal quickly and the next piece of civil unrest planned. The only person not involved in this lethal pastime is Loco Paco. In a world of his own he continued to walk the streets talking to his imaginary five-foot rodent. He could be seen emerging from the smoke of battle, an inane grin from ear to ear and oblivious of the surrounding destruction. Paco’s distinctive walk made him easily recognisable and guaranteed his safety. When he brought the weight down on his front foot, his body seemed to rise into the air. It gave the impression that he was trying to hold down a bunch of helium filled balloons. The Bomberos, on such occasions use discretion, this being the better part of valour, and valour being in rather short supply. With Rodriquez’s olive mill burning the question of whether to attend or not was settled with the toss of a coin. However with manual dexterity being in a short a supply as valour the coin was dropped and landed in an old pair of Sudoroso Joe’s fire socks. Another coin, to see who would retrieve the first was tossed and duly dropped. This process continued until the fire had burnt itself out. It is only because Alqueria is built largely of stone that the village has lasted so long. With civil unrest being such a popular pastime it is sometimes difficult to determine when one riot finishes and another begins. Regarding this particular insurrection, the reason was either the sacking of several Hill People from the olive mill or because it was the one hundred and sixty-fifth day after Epiphany.

braben’s blog... Important instructions Do you ever feel like doing something just so out of the ordinary and maybe rebelling a little? Just imagine, for example, the thrill when you walk casually into Debenhams and shout “BHS”! Well, if not exactly a shout, at least whisper it in a rather loudish whisper so those scary make up salespeople can’t hear you. I did something incredibly rebellious only the other day; I have socks with the days of the week on them and on Monday I quite deliberately put a pair on which said, very clearly for anyone to see, Thursday. Now, that’s pushing the rebellious boat out quite a bit, even if I do say so myself, although I wouldn’t expect you to go quite that far. If you look closely you’ll find that there are countless people who do some very strange things on quite a regular basis. There are those for whom their weekend isn’t the same unless they’ve walked barefoot over white hot coals. I haven’t yet heard of an explanation for this which would encourage me to spend weekends singeing my feet and causing irreparable damage to perfectly good socks. And then there is the downright open mouthed unbelievable behaviour that puts even those hot coals to shame. And no, I’m not even talking people who collect rare Action Men-are there any rare ones? Or others who dress up as Science Fiction characters and spend huge chunks of money going to meet, other people, who have dressed up as similar characters to…to…well what do they do when they get together? But that’s for another time. I want to finish on something that takes the prize for out of the ordinarying! It was in Argentina and a man robbed a bank. Although it isn’t the sort of thing most of us do as a matter of course, robbing a bank is perhaps not that out of the ordinary for some. It wasn’t the robbing of the bank that was so unusual, but the fact that he did Graham is married it whilst wearing a motor cycle helmet and a to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. sock. And nothing else! He lives part of the This incident has left me pondering two year near Albox, things, well three if I am to be precise. Why but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish was this man wearing just the one sock and where exactly was he wearing it? A quiet summers day at the beach - NOT! How to plant a tree, civvy street version; in autumn dig a hole, putting compost or mulch at the bottom, carefully place the tree in the hole making sure the roots are untangled to enable them to grow. Then using a mix of soil and compost fill the hole in, pressing down firmly yet gently to leave a shallow depression. This ensures water can collect around the base of the tree with no run off. Water liberally and again every few days for a month. After that once weekly will do for the next year until the tree is established. Spanish council employee version; buy the tree from a relation of the Mayor as luckily they will own a garden centre. Pay full price with a little extra on top to ensure the tree is top quality. Take delivery of the tree in late spring making sure it’s thrown roughly from the truck, then leave the tree to dry out in the sun for a few days. Return with 3 colleagues to watch another man dig the hole. Plonk the tree in any old how ensuring an empty fag packet and a half eaten sandwich go in too as fertilizer. Then stamp it down really hard to ensure its set like concrete, maybe it will be vertical, maybe not. Water it only if there is time before lunch or pee on it instead. Finally walk away never to return, this last instruction is really important as if the tree survives all this it’s bad news for future employment; best the tree dies so it can be dug up and the tax payers will pay next year to repeat the process. How to water plants civvy street version; as plants drink
at night its best to wait until after sunset. The plants will get maximum benefit as less water evaporates as its cooler. If using a watering system ensure all water jets are working and are pointed towards the plants to conserve water. Banks, ridges and canals can be formed to ensure even coverage of the water so it flows to where needed. Repeat as necessary during the season. How to water plants Spanish council employee version; clock in about morning time, light a fag and stop for breakfast, then turn on the tap whilst adjusting the spray on the hosepipe to the fine mist setting and leisurely spray all the leaves. Tax payers will be proud to see their council employees working hard in the heat of the day and be more understanding when the plants need to be replaced when they either scorch or die from a lack of water reaching the roots. When using lawn sprinklers and irrigation systems, ensure they are only turned on in the day time to ensure maximum evaporation. Also only half the water is to be aimed at the plants, the rest should pour onto the tarmac. This ensures extra water usage so helping the Mayors other relation who coincidentally runs the local water company. Lastly to reinforce in the public eye just how hard council employees work, make sure that anything needing doing on the beach is done once the school holidays start. Perhaps block off access to the sea entirely and drive up and down the beach on heavy machinery. So when holidaymakers come down to the beach, instead of idling their hours away Enjoy Stephens musings? oday, in the ongoing saga of emails, we should cover attachments and limitations. In one regards both subjects are inextricably linked but as limitations is a short subject, and easily covered, we will deal with it first. For the sake of my poor typing finger (I only use one! I am not a secretary, I diagnose and fix computers) and column space, I will refer to MicroSoft as MS. Limitations! What on earth are they and why are they in place? Hotmail have several limits and have these for very good reason. The first of these is not readily known but is a security device to ensure that “Windows Live Hotmail” spots what it deems to be suspicious activity; a large and sudden increase in outgoing messages may indicate your account has been taken over, for example. This limit is set by Hotmail to 300 (three hundred) messages per day. That limit is usually much lower for new accounts. What the time limit is to move on from being a “New Member” is unclear and MS haven’t, as yet, replied to my request for more information. There is a lower limit of 100 (one hundred) recipients per message but that is the Allowance Per Message. Again, this is to monitor for what MS call “suspicious activity” and can lead to a temporarily lower limit (as low as 10 (ten) recipients). Not only do they monitor and control the limits of how many emails that you send in one day but they also monitor and limit the size of the data files that can be attached to an email. This is where MS Hotmail gives Gmail a run for it’s money. Hotmail will allow a maximum of 200 attachments, each being 50MB each. That makes a total of very nearly 10GB. This limit is much less of a limit when you consider the time taken to download, for example, a program from the internet that you want of, say, 10Mb. Obviously, the faster your connection speed, the sooner the file will download! Still, with a connection speed of 2Mb, a 10MB file will take about 13 seconds to download. Multiply that by 200 and you might as well go put the kettle on! What can you attach? Well just about anything! Although MS does seem a little cranky if you try to send programs or music through their service, something to do with copyright and their unwillingness to break the law - Now that’s funny! Enough “Why”, now the How! Did you read last week’s article? If you did then what comes next is a waste of your time. Just in case you missed last weeks article, here is the short version. “Go to the band at the top of the screen, there is only 1 option, “New”. You want to send an email to me telling me how simple emails really are, and they are! Left click on “New”. On the left hand side of the screen is a box waiting for information from you. It wants to know where to sent the email you are about to create. Type “canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk” into the box. Now click where is says “Add A Subject” and now type “awesome or awful article” (please select one :-). Below it will say “Add a message”. As soon as you left click here, this message will disappear to make room for your own. Here you type just about any thing that you like! Finished? Good, back to the top bar and left click on “Send” and it is on it’s way to me. In the words of Alexandra MeerKat - “Simples!”. Send me an email just to prove how easy it really is :-) So till next time, enjoy the summer before it gets too hot (is that possible?) being caught. The last couple of trips out have not been good for ‘Orca Steve’. The fish have moved from where they were previously being caught and the one’s they could see on the fish finder sonar weren’t feeding. What’s changed? Two things Steve thinks, firstly there are a lot of big predator fish jumping close to the shore and possibly scattering the fish that were there previously. with beachcomber John I’ve seen this in front of the Shore Fishing. Beachcomber recently, shoals A couple of members of the of small fish panicking and Albox fishing Club fished the scattering. is where it got interesting! Before they had time to put out tackle in the water Maria got all excited about a fish she could see swimming around the boat. They all looked over the side and there it was a decent size trigger fish approximately 1m below the surface and circling the boat with great interest. Maria dropped her bait in and the trigger dived down chasing the bait, they waited but no bite came. The lads dropped their tackle in but again without a bite. Thinking the trigger had gone, Maria brought here tackle up to check the bait and what was following it, you guessed it, the trigger! Steve told Maria to hold the bait just below the surface and jig it steadily, the trigger swam around the trace, looked at the 3rd piece of prawn from the weight and BANG, it went for it! Steve set Maria’s reel clutch to give line and she fought the fish for 10 minutes before they got it aboard. This was a hard act to follow for the lads but they tried hard and caught loads of Atlantic and Spanish mackerel, pandoras, pickerels and bogues only to be out classed by Maria who caught the biggest mackerel, biggest fish AND most fish! They returned to port with a bursting fish well and four happy fishermen or should he say “fisher people”! One thing they did notice during the day was the amount of bait fishing hitting the surface which at one stage passed under the boat and which took about five minutes for the shoal to clear, something they all watched with eager eyes whilst staring down into the abyss! ‘Squiddly Sid’, Peter and his two mates had a mornings fishing with Steve. Steve headed for the spot of the

previous day’s fishing. They were in the exact same spot as the previous day and there were fish showing on the sonar but they wouldn’t take the bait. They sat patiently for a couple of hours but it was dire, only a couple of two inch panders caught. Steve decided to pull anchor and drift about a little to see what they could come across but only two mackerel were the takers. At midday he moved the boat to Vera playa to a spot where he knew the triggers feed at this time of year but again, nothing, not even a pickerel. So they drifted here and they drifted there to try and find a fish but the fish weren’t interested. They finished the day with a dozen fish between them and the frustrating thing was that they could see millions of fish hitting the surface all around. Maybe big predators have moved in spreading the fish although nothing took Sid’s trolling lure which he put in the water as they moved about. So there you are, two separate but very different days fishing, who said fishing wasn’t a funny old game? Coarse Fishing. ‘Puentes Ray’ made an early start to Puentes last Sunday, arrived 6.30am and it was a beautiful morning with no wind. He decided to have a match day so fished a stick waggler at about 10 feet with single corn and 14 hook. Into fish straight away but not very big 3/4lb average but good sport on light tackle. Cars started arriving at 6.45am and by 9am it was like Butlins (Birds Nest Phil did warn Ray) ray said he will never fish weekends again, screaming kids, dogs, people fishing within arm’s length to you, murder, not what fishing’s about. However by 4pm he had 100 fish including one nice barbel so decided to leave, lesson learned for the future. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. For up to date information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. Tight John.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
19th Hole Golf Society Cucador.
On Thursday 13th June our brave band of “young golfers” left the safe environment of Cucador and ventured to the rarely tried Lorca course. The course, whilst not perfect due to the recent hollow tinning, was acceptable and all participants enjoyed the occasion. Our competition this week was a pairs Texas Scramble, with the pairs being drawn to arrange fairly balanced handicapped pairings. John Haydon and Dave Denyer were the first group away and were successful in being the leaders in the club house for about one hour!!!. John Haydons Two on the par three 4th hole was a feat worth mentioning. John chipped in from about 3 metre•s by cleverly using the flag stick to stop the rapidly moving ball. It struck the stick about half a metre from the ground and slid majestically down into the hole, it matters not how you do it only that you do. Our winners with a Nett score of 69 was Mark Danson and Sylvia Kaye, from 2nd place pairing of Nigel Greenwood and Pete Dow on 70, leaving the team of John Haydon/Dave Denyer in 3rd place with a Nett par score of 71. Forum Golf Society There is obviously something about Medal play that appeals to Forum´s Keith Ryder, for as many players struggled to avoid card-wrecking ¨disaster¨ holes he moved serenely round Playa Macenas on June 14th to win his second individual strokeplay event of the year with a net 68. Adrian Ball was second with a 69, Tony Morgan third & Peter Wright fourth (both 70).
