Santiago rail tragedy
Recordings of telephone conversations and subsequent statements from train-driver Francisco Garzón del Amo reported him as admitting he had been travelling at 190 kilometres per hour in an 80-kilometre limit. And his colleagues across Spain, other members of the train drivers’ union say ‘better safety systems’ in place on the A Grandeira curve at Angrois, four kilometres south of Santiago de Compostela, ‘would have stopped the tragedy from happening’. According to press reports, the automated braking system was not in place on that part of the line and the driver would have needed to slow down manually, they say, although they insist that it is a near-impossible feat, reducing speed from 200 kilometres per hour on the high-speed AVE line to 80 kilometres per hour on the regional line, both parts of the same track, within a matter of seconds. Witnesses say the driver was standing on the line just after the accident, covered in blood, and repeatedly saying, ‘I’m sorry’. He told police, “I’ve messed up,” and admitted that he had ‘wanted to die’ when he saw what had happened. A telephone conversation showed him as saying, “I’ve derailed, what am I supposed to do about it, what do I do.” Colleagues of the 52-year-old driver, who is said to be very experienced, claim they are ‘surprised’ by how quickly he was arrested and charged. They added that ‘it could not have been entirely his fault’ since there is no warning signal and nothing making obligatory the change in speed limit, a difference of 120 kilometres per hour and on a bend. The union says it seems ‘unfair’ that the driver has been arrested so quickly after the accident, especially given that the black box – currently in the hands of the court – has not been opened yet to find out whether there were infrastructure-related problems coming into play. Spain is a world leader in high-speed rail transport and this is the first time ever in the history of the AVE link that an accident involving fatalities has occurred. Its rail travel safety history has always been impeccable, although a major accident in Palencia, Castilla y León and the devastating metro crash in Valencia, both in 2006, have blighted its record. Authorities stress that rail travel remains one of the safest forms of public transport and Spain in particular has some of the world’s most sophisticated and intricate technological
systems in place. A British passenger on board the fateful train which crashed and split into three before catching fire just outside Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, on Tuesday has suffered numerous broken bones – but is alive and out of danger, according to embassy sources. Telesales worker Mark Woodward, 38, who is married to a Spanish woman with one daughter, has had his spleen removed and has suffered broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. The expatriate – who was born in Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) but lives in Galicia with his Spanish family - revealed he went flying through the air over the seat in front, sustaining a blow to the head when the train derailed and hit a wall. His family found out from the press before the British embassy in Spain had had a chance to tell them. Mark’s stepfather Robert Spencer reveals his ‘horror’ at seeing the young father being helped across the track by a National Police officer and another civilian, covered in blood and with his shirt ripped open. Mr Spencer said he was ‘grateful’ that his stepson was alive and ‘apparently walking and okay’, but described seeing him in the newspaper as ‘shocking’. Mark’s mother has flown out to Galicia to be with her son, who remains in intensive care after surgery but is now said to be out of danger. She is reported to be an experienced nurse who had ‘seen everything’, but still found the sight of her son ‘bandaged up’ and ‘with tubes everywhere’ extremely distressing. Luckily, Mark’s wife and daughter were not on the train with him. He is thought to be the only Briton injured in the crash, and none of the 79 who perished are believed to be British. Names and photographs of most of the fatal victims have been published online, and include at least 10 foreigners. So far, two unrelated French citizens – a man and a woman, one Italian man, one woman from the Dominican Republic, a Mexican woman, an Algerian man, an American woman born to Colombian parents, a Brazilian man, a Colombian woman, and a Venezuelan man have been named among the deceased. To date, information on those who lost their lives shows they were all adults aged 18 to 93, aside from one two-year-old girl, Daniela Martín, from Ferrol, whose father and 10-yearold brother were unharmed but whose mother Lidia, 35, also perished.

climbing instructor has been found dead nearly a week after he disappeared in the Picos de Europa mountain range in the northern region of Cantabria. The unnamed 24-year-old was found down a hole some 10 or 12 metres deep in the rocks in the Canalona area, near the hamlet of Peña Vieja at around 16.00hrs on Tuesday last week. Rescuers firstly stumbled upon the deceased’s rucksack, which led them to his body. He went missing on Wednesday, July 17 after having started the climb of the 2,000-metre-high peaks on the Cantabria-Asturias regional border from Peña Vieja with a group of other British mountaineers. The party decided to give up and turn back before they reached the Canalona hill, but the missing man wanted to carry on the climb alone. He was due to have returned the same afternoon to meet up with the rest of the group and, when he did not arrive, they called the Guardia Civil which sent out their Mountain Rescue Squad (GREIM). They combed the area by land and air for six days before they found the climber’s body. He has not been formally identified and it is not known whether the British embassy in Spain has informed his family in England. Neither has it been confirmed whether he lived in Spain, or whether he was on holiday there.

Lightning Forces Alicante-Bound Flight To Make ‘Precautionary’ Landing
A Ryanair flight bound for Alicante from Edinburgh had to land at Glasgow Prestwick airport just minutes after take-off due to having been struck by lightning, sources from the low-cost airline confirm. The flight had just left the Scottish capital at 18.15hrs BST (19.15hrs Spanish time) during a storm when it was hit by a bolt of lightning and forced to touch down at the nearest airport. Aviation engineers inspected the craft fully and gave it the green light to fly shortly afterwards. The pilot then proceeded to Alicante, where the rest of the flight went without a hitch and landed with a slight delay at its Costa Blanca destination. A spokesman for the Irish-based airline apologised for the ‘short delay’ in reaching
the air terminal of El Altet – soon to be renamed Alicante-Elche Airport – but said the safety of passengers, crew and craft were the company’s number one priority. Experts say aircraft in flight are frequently struck by lightning, but that the electrical surge is ‘earthed’ in the same way as it is when a car is struck, and that the passengers rarely notice anything other than a brief episode of turbulence as a result. It is rare that a flight would need to be suspended or cancelled as a result of an electric storm en route. In the case of the Ryanair flight, the decision to land in Glasgow was purely a precaution to check no damage had been sustained by the craft.

Bárcenas’ assets to be embargoed
Former treasurer and senator of the PP Luis Bárcenas has been unable to pay the 43-and-a-quarter-million-euro bail release applied by judge Pablo Ruz. As this bond relates to his civil liability in respect of possible moneylaundering and acceptance of bribes on behalf of the PP party, it is not a payment designed to get him out of jail, but a measure applied so that those on trial do not try to ‘hide’ or ‘lose’ their assets to avoid having to pay compensation when the verdict on their case is passed. Bárcenas has been in prison since June 27 and will remain there until the time of his trial where, if he is considered innocent, he will be released or if he is guilty, will serve the remainder of any custodial sentence awarded. Given that the accused has not paid up within the timescale given, he is now required to present the judge with a list of his assets to be embargoed. Bárcenas’ solicitor Javier Gómez de Liaño intends to lodge an appeal against what is one of the highest bailbonds ever awarded in Spain, given that the ex-treasurer’s former lawyers Miguel Bajo and Alfonso Trallero had their own appeals rejected. The bail release is almost double the 28.1 million originally called for by the prosecution service, given that the amount of tax Bárcenas allegedly avoided paying has been found to be much higher than originally envisaged. And latest reports say Bárcenas’ wife, Rosalía Iglesias, withdrew 6,000 euros in cash the minute the couple got wind of their implication in the trial.
Hell’s Angels Members Arrested In Mallorca Over ‘Mafia Activities
Members of the German mafia who belong to the Hell’s Angels Motor Club (HAMC) have been arrested in Mallorca and charged with money-laundering, blackmail, illegal possession of firearms, human trafficking, drug-dealing and causing grievous bodily harm, according to a report by ThinkSpain. The Hell’s Angels are made up of motorcyclists of numerous nationalities – although mostly German – and have branches or ‘chapters’ in 40 countries on all five continents. One of these is based in Bulgaria and is responsible for forging documents, especially passports and national identity cards. They are known to have kidnapped a large number of young women to force them to work as prostitutes in German brothels and even forced the victims themselves to deliver the proceeds to other Hell’s Angels members in Spain, as well as stealing their identities for loans and purchases of goods to avoid capture.
KAREN OLIVER + TEAM WELCOMES YOU TO THE NEW
The 25 bikers arrested in Lloret de Vistalegre (Mallorca) this week had planned to build a Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit on the island to launder money from their illicit dealings in Turkey and Germany, says National Court judge Eloy Velasco. Two years of investigations have led to the ‘chapter’ of the Hell’s Angels in Mallorca – said to be the largest group of this particular mafia in the world – being traced to a villa on the
island and a further 30 properties raided during which National Police and the Guardia Civil seized hundreds of firearms, knives and tasers, 10 cars and four motorbikes – all top-ofthe-range models – boats, jewellery, 50,000 euros in cash, and various amounts of cocaine, marijuana and ‘designer’ drugs. The gang had set up in Mallorca because of its geographical location and the fact that the part of the island in question is heavily-
populated with foreigners, meaning they could pass by unnoticed. This also gave them a constant source of people to threaten and blackmail, given that the Hell’s Angels normally target people who are foreign to the country they are set up in. The group of 25 who are being held for questioning have been the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Germany for crimes committed in their home nation.

Policemen trebling speed limit to reach crime scene quickly face suspension
Two National Police officers could be suspended for up to three years without pay after being caught on camera driving at three times the speed limit.
They were reportedly on their way to separate urgent call-outs when a speed camera snapped them travelling at 150 kilometres per hour in a 50-kilometre limit on a road in Zaragoza. Authorities say at least 20 cases of police cars breaking the speed limit by a considerable margin on the Z-30 have been filmed on the hidden radar, and offending officers all said they were on their way to solve crimes. But the last two officers are considered to have committed such a grave offence that they face between five days and three years of their employment and salary being suspended. One was on his way to deal with a knife attack, and succeeded in getting there in time to stop the aggressor from causing any serious injuries.

He says police need to be allowed to do their job and that if in their professional judgment they decide it is a case that needs urgent attendance, particularly where it could be a life-or-death situation, adhering to speed limits or other traffic controls may be more likely to cause fatalities due to the delay in handling the crime in question. Local Police officers in Zaragoza have archived the case against the offending officers, including their fines, but they are likely to face in-house disciplinary action from their superiors.

F1 test-driver María de Villota marries long-term boyfriend a year on from Duxford crash
Formula 1 test-driver María de Villota, who came back from the brink after an horrific accident a year ago, has just got married in Santander (Cantabria). The brave 33-year-old, who lost her right eye in a crash during her first testdrive with Team Marussia in July 2012, says boyfriend Rodrigo García Millán, now 29, never left her side while she was in hospital, nor during her convalescence. “I want to share with you all that Rodrigo and I have just got married in Santander, and we’re very happy,” said María on her Twitter page. Rodrigo, a personal trainer by trade, had asked her to marry him at the famous lighthouse in the northern city, which sits on the Atlantic coast and was popular with the British gentry in the 19th century, leading it to be known as ‘the Brighton of Spain’. “I knew that one day we’d
get married, but Rodrigo surprised me by asking me just before celebrating my first anniversary of being ‘reborn’,” María told reporters. “It was a few days before July 4 [the date of her accident last year] and in our favourite place: Santander lighthouse. “When I turned round to contemplate the beautiful sunset, there he was, on his knees and with an engagement ring in his hand. “I remember that I got very emotional and couldn’t stop crying.” María said Rodrigo had been her ‘rock’ during the days when it was touch and go whether she would survive, and during her long, painful recovery. “I was already in love with him, but after the accident, I discovered an unconditional love that is greater than anything,” the
Friday Golf Society 26 juLY:
It was regular Friday Golf again this week after a week off as we could not get on the course last week. We had another hot round of golf accompanied by a pleasant light breeze on and off. There were34 players including 5 guests playing yellow ball with 2 hidden holes. The winners with a score of 124 points were Mr President (Alan Sly), Idris Browning, Elaine MacMillan and Eduardo Pacheco Martinez. Last place and chocolates went to Mimmo Pettinicchio, Gerard Ryan, Bijan (a guest) and Doris with a score of 110. It was a close thing as the bottom 5 teams had only 3 points difference between them. Mario (Eduardo´s son, a guest) won nearest the pin with a distance of 2.30m. Thanks to John Fielding for collecting the cards and giving out the prizes this week. There were 7 handicap cuts this week. Top scorers were: Elaine MacMillan 40 pts, Robbie MacMillan 39, Mel Moody 39, John Woodhead 38, Leonard Copley 37, Marion Van Dongen Torman 37 and Brian Downey 37. Well done to all of them. Madrid-born María, an experienced racing driver – although she had not yet realised her dream of competing at Formula 1 level amongst the men – had been a test-driver for several years but had only just started with Team Marussia when her career was effectively ended with a violent smash at Duxford airbase in Cambridgeshire, UK. She underwent numerous operations to rebuild her skull and face and repair the potentially deadly head injuries she had suffered, but surgeons were unable to save her right eye. Aside from the eyepatch she now wears, it is impossible to see that María was so badly smashed up, since she has not suffered any disfigurement and, except for regular headaches, is in good health. She has even been given the go-ahead to drive again and is looking forward to getting back into the motor racing world, which she says is her greatest
passion. María won the hearts of millions both in and outside the motor racing field as a result of her accident, particularly due to her ever-present optimism in the face of such adversity. Although very upset when first told she would lose an eye – fearing it would mean she would no longer work as a driver again – she has been extremely positive since the accident and simply thrilled to be alive. Concerning her disability, she joked that ‘eye-patches are becoming fashionable nowadays’, wearing a white one for her wedding – and it is clear that to Rodrigo, María is every bit as beautiful now as before that fateful day last July.

Osteopath Naturopath Enrique Arias, N.D, D.O
For years philosophers have sought the secret to a fulfilling existence, but now one man claims to have discovered it - and come up with a formula. Research into what makes people feel happy has led renowned professor, Dr Todd Kashdan, to produce an equation called the Feel Good Formula. In it, he identifies six factors which, when put together in the right combination, make a happy soul. According to an article by Mail Online, the factors are: Live in the moment (M), be curious (C), do something you love (L), think of others (T), nurture relationships (N), and take care of you body (B). The winning formula is Feeling Good = (Mx16 + Cx1 + Lx2) + (Tx5 + Nx2 + Bx33). Dr Kashdan reviewed the results of nationwide research carried out into how Brits truly feel, inside and out. Dr Kashdan, author of ‘Curious? Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life’ drew upon his years of experience to analyse the research. Whilst it may not appear obvious how a combination of letters and numbers will make you feel good, Dr Kashdan believes this formula is the perfect prescription for a happy soul. He said: ‘There is no single secret to feeling good, but when these six ingredients are carefully attended to, in the right doses, you will be on target for a happy life. ‘Transform’s research shows that Britain is in need of a bit of a lift and it is great to be working with them on this mission to inspire a more upbeat Britain. ‘Each of the ingredients requires a bit of work. Just know that your hard work will lead to the greatest rewards possible.’ Steven Taylor, Marketing Director at Transform Cosmetic Surgery said: ‘We are delighted to have such a well respected figure as Dr Kashdan involved on the Feel Good Campaign and couldn’t be more pleased that the partnership led to the creation of an actual formula to Feel Good. ‘We hope that the Feel Good Formula will continue to help boost spirits and put a smile on faces across the UK.’
SO WHAT IS FEEL GOOD FORMULA FOR HAPPINESS?

Pedestrians face breathalysing if they flout traffic laws Pedestrians who breach road rules will be tested for alcohol and drug consumption – even where they are not victims of, and have not caused, an accident.
‘Road rules’ for pedestrians that qualify for breathalysing if flouted have not been defined, but walking down the middle of a busy road or in front of a moving car could be triggers for testing if the person is caught. According to a report by ThinkSpain, this is part of a road traffic law reform, which also makes driving under the influence of drugs a criminal offence and requires under18s to wear cycle helmets when on their bikes in town. The legal alcohol limit will remain at 0.25 milligrams per litre of air when breathalysed, falling to 0.15 milligrams for
“English spoken”
new drivers and those in charge of commercial vehicles.
But driving under the influence of drugs is charged on a zero-tolerance basis, meaning there is no lower limit – the slightest trace of any form of illegal drugs, including those erroneously considered ‘harmless’ such as cannabis, will result in a fine at the very least. Fines for drunk-driving or ‘drug-driving’ start at 1,000 euros, rather than the previous figure of 500 euros. Whilst cyclists under 18 must now wear a helmet when riding on urban roads, the law remains the same for adult bikers, although a further debate will be held in the autumn amid countrywide protests by regular cyclists and towns which run on-street bike-hire schemes.
Deborah Cubel fisher
Child restraint systems including booster seats are also regulated by the new law and their requirement is based upon height rather than age, meaning they are now essential for all children of 135cm (4’6”) and under.
Speed-camera detectors remain illegal, as do speedcamera inhibitors which prevent these from detecting vehicles which have them installed. The law reform text includes future speed regulation which will soon be open to debate and includes the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT)’s wish to increase limits on certain stretches of motorways to 130 kilometres per hour and reduce limits on B-roads and certain streets in towns and cities.

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com
Q . Is this the right time to purchase in Spain?
A. This is not a legal query, but we frequently receive e-mails with precisely this question. Nobody has the magic ball to know for certain what will happen in the next year or two, but their is no doubt that their are extremely good opportunities and that it is presently a buyers market. Their are definitely many more transactions happening this year in Almería compared to last year . Those who where waiting to purchase have realised that they cannot wait fore ever and the sellers have reduced their price expectations in line with the market. The bank are also offering properties at greatly reduced prices, with generous finance if you purchase one of their properties. The market though is full of disparity regarding prices. In the same estate agent´s windows you will find properties with prices more appropriate for 2007 then 2013, and yet in the same window you will find a property priced by a motivated seller at a reduction of 50% on the 2007 prices. As long as you have the patience and are prepared to put some work into the property hunt I would say that is is an excellent time to purchase a property in Almeria

Madrid Arena Trial Update
‘Suffocating’ policeman says hall ‘full of minors’; reveller says victims left unattended as medic ‘talked on the phone’
A police officer on duty at the tragic Hallowe’en party in Madrid Arena last year where five girls died in a crush says there were ‘lots of minors’ in the building. The unnamed witness, aged 24, said he felt ‘considerably older’ than most of the revellers at the party and that la huge number of them were well under the age of 18, the minimum required to enter. In fact, witnesses aged 16 have been questioned already, and they are not thought to be the youngest allowed in that night. The National Police officer confirmed security was poor and the maximum legal capacity of the venue was exceeded by far. Investigations show that the number of people let into the Madrid Arena that night was at least twice and possibly nearly three times the number that the building was designed to hold. When the officer entered via the ramp at the emergency exit, he immediately felt ‘breathless’ as though he were ‘drowning’, and had to escape for his own safety through the only way out of the main dance hall – into the
corridor.
vain.
It was in the corridor that the crush occurred which killed 18-year-olds Rocío Oña, Cristina Arce and Katia Esteban, and 17-year-old Belén Langdon, (all four pictured below) as well as leaving María Teresa Alonso, 20, in a deep coma from which she never awoke.
Another witness – a young man who attended the party and was caught in the crush as revellers tried to enter the dance hall when popular DJ Steve Aoki began his performance, said he began to perform CPR on one of the unconscious girls – given that he is a lifeguard by trade and has first-aid training - but that a man in a ‘fluorescent yellow jacket’ ordered him to stop and took the girl to the medical room.
“I was on the point of collapsing, or being knocked over, several times because of the sheer volume of people there,” the officer told magistrates. He and a colleague rushed to the aid of those who had lost consciousness and took over from a third officer who was performing CPR on one of the girls who later died, although it has not been confirmed which. The policeman said he guessed ‘about five people’ would have been killed, but was ‘amazed’ that there were not ‘plenty more’, because ‘the situation was out of control’. Abdón Núñez, solicitor for the family of Belén Langdon, praised the officer for his ‘invaluable work’ in attempting to save the life of one of the victims, even though this turned out to be in
Here, only one doctor was on duty, Simón Viñals, and the three girls whose hearts and breathing had stopped were ‘waiting their turn’ to be resuscitated. The same young man said he say the girls lying in the room unattended while the doctor was talking on his mobile phone. If a person ceases to breath and has no heartbeat, they need to be resuscitated in under eight minutes to avoid irreparable and possibly serious brain-damage – and where they are not brought round in under half an hour, their chances of survival are practically nil.
Santiago rail tragedy:
Con artist tries to pass for boyfriend of victim in order to claim compensation
A heartless fraudster has been arrested after attempting to pass as the partner of one of the victims of the Galicia rail crash in which 78 people have lost their lives in order to claim the compensation due to the injured and family members of those who died. The accused, identified only by his initials of R.R.R., tried to claim the deceased victim was pregnant by him, and that she had not been formally identified. He was detained when parts of his statement about the woman in question did not add up. The suspect is said to have four other arrests to his name in relation to fraud and theft. Authorities have set up a hall with the personal effects of the victims – both those who lost their lives on Tuesday evening when the Madrid-Ferrol train derailed just outside Santiago de Compostela, and those who are injured and in critical conditions – so that their relatives can reclaim them. The financial cost to the rail board and the State is likely to run into multi-millions since all those on board the train, and the next of kin of the deceased will be entitled to compensation. Fears are afoot that foreign investment in Spain’s highspeed AVE network – the largest of which comes from Brazil – could now be in jeopardy. But AVE bosses are quick to point out that the accident was not on the high-speed line, rather on the regional network, since the Alvia trains cover both and these are via the same tracks.
Worst forest fire in Mallorca since 1999 sees two towns evacuated
Mallorca’s worst forest fire in 14 years is still burning near Andratx and has already wiped out 1,600 hectares since Friday. Homes in Estellencs, near Andratx were due to be evacuated last night (Saturday) and 40 fire engines, four helicopters and about another 20 hydroplanes were working round the clock with 186 members of rescue forces including forestry brigades, the Civil Protection squad and the fire brigade. In total, 325 people have been drafted in to help, but they are working in shifts with a minimum of 186 on duty at any one time. The number of planes and helicopters being used is partly due to the fact that the site of the fire is very difficult to reach on foot. Homes in Andratx itself have already been evacuated, but have not as yet suffered any
fire damage. Although authorities were not expecting residents in neighbouring Estellencs to have to flee their houses, they have decided to order them to do so as a precaution. Whilst the blaze continues to rage out of control, emergency services are working hard on containing it and are quietly confident of being able to have it within clear boundaries and stopping it spreading by later today. The MA-10 road has been cordoned off, mainly because the wire netting on the rock-face at the sides of the road to prevent crumbling have melted away as a result of the blaze, meaning the safety of drivers cannot be guaranteed. Fire-fighters have come from as far afield as Cuenca, in Castilla-La Mancha and Soria, in Castilla y León in the north-west of the mainland to help out, as have the armed forces from Bétera (Valencia).

ecial p s health ing v li outdoor
insects and bugs that bite or sting
Buzzing bees, marching ants and swarms of midges are becoming as much a part of summer as swimming pools, the beach and ice cream. Wasp and wasp sting The humble wasp (and closely related hornet) can give a nasty sting if it feels threatened, leading to itching and swelling. And wasp stings aren’t always harmless. Stings from wasps cause the most allergic reactions. You won’t have an allergic reaction after your first sting by a wasp, but you can develop a serious allergic reaction (also known as an anaphylactic reaction) after one or more stings have “sensitised” your system. Prevent wasp stings: Don’t try to swat wasps away. You’ll just make them cross and more likely to sting you. Instead, calmly and slowly move out of their way. Like other stinging insects, wasps love bright colours so wear white or neutral clothes to deter them. Look out for wasps’ nests in your home or garden and have them removed immediately when you find them. Bee and bee sting A bee sting feels similar to that of a wasp. The difference is that the bee leaves its sting inside you and it’s important to remove it to stop infection setting in. Bee stings are painful, but unless you have an allergy to bees, they’re unlikely to cause serious damage. If you’re allergic to wasp stings, don’t assume you’ll also be allergic to bee venom. Bee and wasp venoms are different and people who are allergic to wasp venom are rarely allergic to bee venom. Prevent bee stings: Stay still and calm while a bee buzzes around you. Bees love sweet drinks and the last thing you want to do is swallow one, so be sure to look before you sip your drink at picnics and barbecues. Mosquito and its bite Mosquitoes are a nuisance. Their bites cause intense itching and swelling. But while they transmit deadly diseases in other parts of the world, they don’t cause major harm in Spain. Prevent mosquito bites: Smells and bright colours attract insects. Avoid using scented hand or body creams and strong perfumes and sparkly, colourful jewellery if you’re going to spend time outside. Insect repellents are also effective. Don’t forget to cover up and use repellent at night Midge and midge bites Midge bites don’t transmit illness but they’re painful, itch intensely and can swell up alarmingly. Prevent midge bites: Midges tend to attack in swarms, especially in hot weather, so use an insect repellent and cover up at dawn and dusk. Bedbugs and their bites They don’t carry disease, but their bites cause itchy red bumps. Some people have a
serious skin reaction with blisters that can become infected. What to do: If you think your home is infested with bedbugs (tiny black spots on your mattress and bed are a giveaway), get them treated straight away. Don’t be embarrassed – bedbugs are not a sign of a dirty home. Horsefly and its bite A large, hairy fly whose bite can be extremely painful, the horsefly tends to bite on warm, sunny days, especially the head and upper body. Prevent horsefly bites: The horsefly doesn’t spread disease, but as its bite cuts the skin rather than piercing it, horse fly bites are very painful, take longer to heal than other insect bites and can easily become infected, so cover up and use insect repellent.

Pension entitlement overhaul
could mean part-timers no longer have to work twice as many years as full-time employees
The Secretary of State for Social Security Tomás Burgos says part-time workers should not have to be ‘paying into the system’ for as long as fulltime employees to qualify for a State pension. At present, to be eligible for any type of retirement pension, a person needs to show they have been on the Social Security system – either as a employee on a contract, as a registered self-employed worker, signed on with the dole office, on maternity leave or a State sick pension – for 15 years. They then have to be in this situation for a minimum of 30 years – soon to rise to 35 years – to qualify for a full pension based upon their earnings over their working lives. As contributions are based upon a 40-hour working week, this is then calculated on a pro-rata basis for those working part-time, meaning that a person who has always worked 20 hours a week will need to be paying into the system for 30 years to get a pension and 60 to 70 to get a full one, whilst people who have been working for 10 hours a week all their lives need to be ‘in the system’ for 60 years to receive anything and between 120 and 140 years to qualify for the full amount. With the financial crisis and the unemployment toll, jobs tend to be seasonal – during the tourist season – and are more likely to be part-time. Many women’s associations say this scheme amounts to gender discrimination since, in past decades, children were nearly always cared for by their mothers, who could only work part-time as a result, and even today, 55 per cent of parents who work reduced hours in order to bear the lion’s share of childcare are mothers rather than fathers. Burgos says that with the pension reform, which tightens up eligibility, at least 40 per cent of the current working-age generation would be unable to receive anything at all when they retire – even were it not for the fact that 27 per cent, or six million, were currently out of a job. He has proposed that parttime workers only need to show seven-and-a-half years of Social Security contributions to qualify for a retirement pension – which effectively means they have worked 20 hours a week for 15 years, but will show up on their records as seven-and-a-half years ‘in the pot’ for their pension fund – and that the number of years is reduced on a pro-rata basis according to average number of hours worked. It would mean that those who were working for an average of 10 hours a week would, after 15 years, have a total of three years and nine months on their records, which Burgos says should be treated in the same way as if they had worked a 40hour week for 15 years. He has presented this proposal to the Toledo Pact in Parliamentary Congress. Recently, the court declared that the current method of calculating pension entitlement based upon hours worked, leaving part-timers having to work for more than the average human lifetime before they were able to retire, was unconstitutional. This verdict by the Constitutional Court was partly based upon the fact that it was mainly women who would be without a pension since, although childcare is becoming a role split equally between genders, just 10 years ago two-thirds of mothers were the main carers and therefore part-time workers – compared to 55 per cent of them as at the end of 2012.

Puppies by the dozens
The shelter is desperately looking for foster homes for a large number of puppies. Without a number of Good Samaritans, a large amount of puppies will just not make it. They will not enjoy the love of a permanent home. They will not enjoy the life they so deserve. They will be dead! So many things are stacked
against them. They are cruelly taken from their mother almost before they have taken their first few gasps of life. They are bundled into sacks or boxes from which they have no hope of escape. They are left in the burning sun and left to die unless the volunteers from the shelter find them first. Last week
another fifteen puppies were abandoned outside the shelter in a variety of containers like they were vegetables and not living creatures. They are all now struggling to survive. Without their mothers they are likely to succumb to a variety of diseases. Without special attention they don’t have
medicines, and vaccinations. There are so many needs to be covered. Fortunately, balanced against the bad news can be very good news. Photos are still coming in of the dogs recently sent to Germany, featuring them enjoying the good life. These beautiful photos give the shelter a shot in the arm and give them the strength to keep on fighting. The photos show the dogs as they are meant to be: loved, cared for and having a great time. Buba, Lanis and Sonya have gone to Northern Germany to a Pension with a huge garden where they enjoy chasing around, having great fun. Fernando has been adopted by a mistress who is very active in sport. Fernando accompanies her
everywhere, even into the water which is quite a new element for him. Leonor has been adopted by a family with children, in the Province of Almeria. She is enjoying all the love and attention that was missing in her life for so long If you can manage to get to the shelter, why not adopt a tree. All you need to do is tie a name tag to your chosen tree and take up a minimum of 12 litres of water to each tree every week. The gift of 75 trees from the Ayuntamiento of Vicar presented its own problems. The water bill shot up and became a drain on the shelter’s meagre resources. Old blankets and food are always welcome. Details as always from Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com
a hope for life. The shelter is not even giving names to these puppies because they do not know if they will survive. If they have a name, the pain of their loss is even more poignant. However, if you cannot foster or adopt a puppy, you can help the shelter with donations for special puppy food,

viewpoint
I suppose it was ever so – each technological leap forward, from the wheel through to the Large Hadron Collider has been met with derision and suspicion. All through the ages people have asked ‘What you doing?’ The response has been ‘I’m inventing something that is going to change our way of life.’ The askers then hung about for a bit, to see if the invention would explode in an interesting manner, and if it didn’t, they would shake their heads, go ‘Tut-tut’ in a patronising tone of voice, and sagely say ‘It’ll never work.’ Ultimately, many inventions did work, and did change our way of life, though the Large Hadron Collider has as yet had no impact at all on the daily life of Limaria. However, each massive technological leap forward has also had a wobble factor, a tiny glitch that makes it not quite 100% perfect. Take the wheel, for instance; Stone Age Man quickly learnt to team his new invention with a brake (probably after a downhill trial run, when his wife’s cousin’s aunt didn’t dodge quickly enough). Had he at the same time invented an Impact Avoidance System, then the wheel would have been perfect, as would the condition of his wife’s cousin’s aunt. In 1837 Charles Babbage pulled together various ideas and came up with the first digital computer, patted himself on the back and said ‘There you go!’ In 1842 Ada Lovelace decided that the computer was a dumb old thing, simply sitting there humming and whirring, and so she set about programming it, and unwittingly created a real-life Frankenstein’s Monster. She gave it a brain, but it never occurred to her to give it a conscience as well. So computers got cleverer and cleverer, until in no time at all they were cleverer than a sizeable chunk of the human population. This is where things started to go wrong. The computers got too big for their boot, and no longer regarded themselves as servants. They became elitist, bossy, and at times downright awkward, just because they could. My laptop is elitist, bossy, and at times downright awkward. However, I wish to gently point out to it that it lives in MY house and is fed on electricity paid for by ME. Furthermore, I would like to softly remind it that I have the ability to pull its Life Support (plug) out whenever I feel like it. So, dearest laptop, be good. Know your place – or else! Oh Ada, if only you could have foreseen how dangerous intelligence is without integrity!

Distant Names to Conjure With
Like most Brits, we watched last week’s events concerning the royal baby, with interest at first; followed by the desire to get it over with and finally, approaching physical pain through the sheer reporting overkill of the whole thing, the longing to see an end to it all. The day before the birth we were subjected to a Sky news reporter spending a whole twenty minutes telling us that there was no news from inside the hospital. Even Kate Burley, who tried to intercede on several occasions, just could not shut the pillock up. But I’m a Royalist at heart and happy for the parents who seem to be a nice young couple regardless of their elevated status that goes along with being members of the British aristocracy. But as I write, the talk is what the little bloke will be called, with bets flying around on the likely outcome, and as expected, most of the favourites feature typical regal handles like George, Alexander and Henry. I wish they would call him Leroy or Cyril, just to throw an almighty spanner in the works.
Anyway, one thing I have always found interesting about the whole affair, is the fact that Kate and her family come from the Berkshire village of Bucklebury, and many years ago one of our irregular drinking haunts was at The Old Boot Inn just a couple of miles down the road in Stanford Dingley. So when that familiar old hostelry was flashed on the screen yesterday, I jumped up excitedly and shouted: “There it is – The Old Boot!” Well my wife, who was in the kitchen at the time, mis-heard me and came storming in brandishing a wicked looking tomato. “What did you call me?” she challenged. “No, not YOU old boot!” I assured her. “But look, that’s one of the pubs where we used to drink.” “From what I’ve heard, you must have drunk in practically all of them”, she countered before turning on her heel and returning to whatever it was that she was doing. Her remarks really cut deep at times. In fairness, it wasn’t an establishment that we used on a frequent basis, but was one of a number that we occasionally travelled to purely to get out of town and try something different. The White Lion at Hartley Wintney; The Shoulder of Mutton in Hazeley Heath - where I later held my stag party; The Highwayman in Woodcote and Danny La Rue’s pub By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com
-The Swan in Goring-on-Thames were other country pubs that we had discovered and used when the mood took us and we felt like a drive out on a summer’s evening. I had come across the Old Boot whilst travelling to and from a job I had been working on at one of the substantial properties at Bucklebury, and I remember part of our conversation at the bar the first time we partook of the inn’s hospitality. It was my mate Ray who asked: “So how did you find this place then?” “I was doing a job down the road”, I told him. “A new roof on a six car garage.” “Six cars!” Ray was impressed. “Yes and you should see the house”, I said. Ray didn’t want to know about the house; it was the cars that fascinated him. “So what are the six cars?” He asked. “They don’t have six cars, just two.” “So what’s the point of having a six car garage then”, he queried. Well, I didn’t know did I, but he wasn’t going to let it go. “How much did you charge them for the roof?” “Just over two hundred quid”, I told him (a lot of money in those days). “So they spent two hundred notes on a six car garage that only has two cars in it”, he came back. “That’s about it.” We took a long swig of our beers. “What are the two motors then?” Ray wanted to know. “A Bentley and some sporty softtop job with the name of some insect or other.” I told him. “That would be a Beetle then!” Was Ray’s brilliant deduction. It was Alan, the third member of our party who spoke next.

alqueria - The Grand Heist
The folk of Alqueria looked in horror at the forlorn spectacle that was once their homes. Broken glass, torn bedding and doors swinging off their hinges, the looting of Alqueria had been complete. The poor had been separated from their valuables quicker and more completely than even a Tory chancellor could manage. Loco Paco, the only Alquerian not at the picnic and therefore present when the thieves arrived could shed little light on the matter. It appears he was taking his pet Saharan Dung Beetle, ‘Benjy’ for a walk when they turned-up. Thinking they were on the lookout for unlicensed Scarabs he and his precious beetle went into hiding. He watched as the thieves loaded their fleet of trucks with the portable and semi-portable goods and chattels of the villagers. When asked why he didn’t raise the alarm he muttered some gibberish about the licensing requirements of the species Scarabaeidae. The Spanish guards on the Alquerian border were of no help either. In fact they seemed to be suffering from a form of selective blindness which appeared proportional to their sudden affluence. The heist bore all the hallmarks of Medioladrillo Cid and his gang from Madrid. These unprincipled villains make a habit of plundering small villages while their inhabitants are otherwise engaged. They were also under suspicion of being involved in the Great Merluza Theft of 93. As the people of Alqueria slept on bare stone floors or rather bare marble floors in the case of the Hill People discussions took place on what should be done. Jóse Cabrasilbido, the local policeman was out of his depth. The idea of asking the Spanish National Police to help was mooted. Manuela however was against the suggestion. She was convinced that the last time they were in Alqueria the photographs they took of her were not for training purposes. Free of their worldly possessions the people of Alqueria knew an equality and comradeship never experienced before. It should have been a golden time of reconciliation and understanding. Unfortunately it was such an alien feeling it worried and confused them. Perhaps they weren’t ready for such a heady ideal. It simply made them more determined to regain their wealth and plans were laid to that end. The ‘Fondo de Ayuda por Alqueria’, was put in place. There was a problem though. If everyone in the village was broke who would donate, but wise fiscal policy has never been a feature of the Alquerian establishment. Manuela and Poyato had another plan. Commandeering several vehicles they drove into Spain and proceeded to loot the village of Pobreville. The population of Pobreville were enjoying their annual Merienda de Campo some kilometres distant. The status quo was therefore restored and the population of Alqueria could continue their interminable squabbles.
“Probably an Alpha Spider.” He notified us. “That’s it.” I confirmed and Ray nodded sagely. Another swig. “They would have done better to have had a bit of the roof done and left the rest till later.” Ray was like a dog worrying a bone. “They probably would have if they were
skint and didn’t mind getting their power boat flooded every time it rained.” I announced. “Boat!” Now he was seriously impressed. “Another round lads?” I suggested, before further interrogation commenced. It’s funny how one word – Bucklebury on this occasion - can conjure up such vivid memories from the past.

braben’s blog...
So, with the arrival of summer and the prospect of a little overheating, may I commend a Japanese innovation, one which, okay isn’t for everyone, but nevertheless is worth uncovering, a bra with built in ice packs. Yes they’ve really bounced ideas around and come up with something that will keep you cool, well will keep half of the population cool anyway and although I won’t be wearing one anytime soon, no matter how hot it may get, some of those Japanese Sumo wrestling guys could do with them I think! But that doesn’t take away from the fact that innovations such as the ice bra show that there are times when we can do extraordinarily intelligent things. Unfortunately we don’t always cover ourselves with glory and there are times when it’s difficult to distinguish between the intelligence of some individuals and that, say, of a small bar of Dairy Milk chocolate. A chap in America, who was certainly old enough to know much better, lost his temper and attacked his father with the birthday cake the elderly parent had baked. Maybe a drop too much of birthday water had gone to his head but really, how can we invent frozen bras on the one hand and attack a loved one with a birthday cake on the other. I only hope it wasn’t the sort with that hard icing, you know, the stuff you can use to hammer nails into concrete, or there may well have been some nasty injuries suffered, similar to something that can be inflicted by those pointy bits on a Toblerone. Then to prove, if further proof were needed, that many of us shouldn’t be trusted out of the sight of a sensible adult a story surfaced from Graham is married France which makes you wonder if there are enough sensible adults to to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. go round! The story starts very positively with a group of well meaning He lives part of the scouts who, for their good deed, decided to clean off graffiti daubed year near Albox, all over a cave. They worked like mad things and after several hours but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish and a few grazed fingers later, succeeded in getting it all off, only to be told, afterwards, that the graffiti was over ten thousand years old and to contact Graham regarding this was the only existing example in that part of France. article email: You know I think, some people should just stay in, lock the doors, put helenandg@yahoo. the kettle on and do a jigsaw! co.uk

Bristol couple hold wedding reception at McDonald’s
A couple who found love beneath the Golden Arches have toasted their wedding with milkshakes and Coke in a fast-food feast at McDonald’s. The Mirror reports that Steven and Emily Asher paid £150 to feed 33 guests at Bristol’s Cribbs Causeway restaurant. On the “the happiest day of our lives” they arrived in a stretched limo before the 28-year-old groom washed down a Chicken
Legend meal with a strawberry milkshake. Emily, 21, had a Coke with her Chicken McNuggets meal. Steven, who proposed after a string of burger-based dates, said: “It was a great day and everyone seemed to find our reception at McDonald’s really interesting. “Everyone enjoyed themselves - everyone loves McDonald’s, don’t they?”
Princess plate gamble backfires A Dorset firm has lost out after acting little boy, the small family business was on an “inside tip” and producing 5,000 commemorative plates celebrating the arrival of a ‘Royal Princess’. The unnamed company supposedly had a tip-off from a royal insider that the Duchess of Cambridge was set to give birth to a girl. With complete confidence in their inside man, they designed plates with the message: “To celebrate the birth of the Royal Princess.” So, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced they had had a
left with thousands of pounds of worthless merchandise on their hands. The entire stock was snapped up by www. wholesaleclearance.co.uk which is selling the souvenir plates in stacks of 50 for £149, or £2.98 each. They have even suggested possible uses for the pieces of ‘inaccurate history’ including ‘waiting for baby number two and selling them for a profit’, ‘having a plate smashing contest’ and to ‘give to your colleagues as the worst secret Santa present ever’.
Thunderbird Part 4 – Local folders and filtering - the final battle! Local folders? What are they and what possible use can they be to you? First, What are they? As simplistic as it seems, the folders are created and stored on your machine instead of being on the web under the protection (control?) of some ‘faceless’ operator. What is the benefit of this? The first benefit is that you can back them up safely to an external drive for the ‘Just in Case’ scenario. Should the computers holding this information, on the internet, ‘crash’, then your information would be lost, if only for a few days, while they get another computer running and restore the yesterday’s backed up copy. Second benefit? You can access them any time, night or day, with or without an internet connection. Drawbacks! If you don’t regularly back them up and your computer does go ‘belly up’ then you will have lost them. The upside is that they should still be on your email provider’s computer and can then be restored to you just as soon as your computer is working again. Now that you know what folders are, it is now time to create a couple with you. We all have, at time, trouble with the law, whether we are at fault or not! So, let us create a folder and call it ‘legal’. Go to the point where is says ‘Local Folders’ on the left hand side of the window and right click over it. You will get a drop down menu with option 4 being ‘New Folder’. Click on that and window will ask for the name of the folder. As suggested, type in ‘Legal’ and click on the button marked ‘Create’. A new folder called ‘legal’ is now at the bottom of the list waiting to be filled. The simplest way to add something to your new folder is to go to your ‘Inbox’, click on, and hold, a message and then drag it to the new folder. It has now been moved to a more organised place. Well done! Lets try something a little more automated. Filtering is the action of automatically moving emails from the ‘Inbox’ to somewhere else by following simple rules. The way to start creating these rules is to go to the menu bar, click on ‘Tools’ and then, about half way down is the option ‘Message Filters’, how surprising is that? You will have to create a filter name. Choose one that seems to fit the task, such as ‘Legal Documents’. The next text box has a default option of ‘Check mail or manually run’, I would leave that one and move down the rules proper. If you are going to have only one rule (name of sender OR specific legal phrase OR subject heading) then leave the default setting of ‘match all of the following’. Only change it if you have several rules and ALL must be moved to your folder. So you have mail from ‘Rumpold’ of the Bailey and want to automatically store it in your new folder. In the main window is a drop down box with the highlighted option subject. Change this to ‘From’. In the next box leave the default option as ‘Contains’ and in the final box put the email address of ‘Rumpold’ and then move to bottom window where it wants to know where you want it to go. The first Drop down box asks what action is to be taken. Click on it and look at what options you have available. The default one is usually the best! Finally, the second drop down box asks where the action sends the mail to. Here you find and select the folder ‘Legal Documents’, press the ok button and you’re done. Do that with all categories of emails and very soon you will be the envy of everyone who is disorganised :-) and with that your simple tutorial is complete. I haven’t a clue as to the next subject but know that someone will tell me what to do! For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

TWO WOODS TRIPLES COMPETITION FINAL
The Final took place on Sunday of this summer competition and in sweltering conditions. The teams were:Joe Spicer, Di Saunders and Arthur Lees v Janet Jackson, Ian Jackson and Brian Firth. Arthur’s team took an early lead but were soon caught by Brian’s team. After 11 ends it was all square, but from then on until the 17th the lead swung from one side to the other. On the 17th end Jan sent down a superb bowl trailing the jack back to her other bowl and Brian’s team picked up a three to put them 14 to 11, but with a never giving up spirit on the 18th end Joe sent down one of his best bowls of the game followed by Di sending both her bowls to lie shot and third bowl, Arthur bowled his first wood to give his team four shots, and as Arthur had the last bowl Di advised him not to bowl this bowl! The final score was 15 Arthur’s team and 14 Brian’s team.

Boat Fishing ‘Pugwash Pete’ took Trevor, Laura and Lee out for a day’s fishing. The boys were telling Laura how to fish; on her first drop she had 2 nice sizes palometes. After that they had fish after fish, nice sized mackerel, pandoras, weavers and a tub gurnard. Mackerel were mostly coming up one or two at a time then Laura had a full house and then another good size palomete, it was a good day for everyone. See photo of Trevor and Lee with a palomete. ‘Hissing Sid’ went out with Stuart and his lads Lewis and Liam. The sea was nice and flat and fishing was good, nothing big but plenty to keep them busy. Sid was out again with Steve who is on holiday from Wimbledon, (‘Womble Steve’ then?) Brian from Mojacar and Bob from Garrucha. The fishing was slow for Steve but Brian and Bob were pulling them in 2, 3 and 4 at a time. Same rigs same bait and 8 feet apart, if your lucks in it’s in. Once again Sid was out and this time with Glenn Charles, his son Jonathan and daughter Grace. The sea had a big swell that made it a
Shore Fishing ‘London Bill’ has been catching palometes and mackerel from Garrucha, Mojacar and Macenas. He like me is surprised how late the tuna are arriving this year. Five members of the ‘Albox Fishing Club’ fished off Mojacar’s Indalo rocks from 5 to 9pm one night with a good on shore easterly breeze. ‘Lucky Luke’ caught the best fish, a palomete weighing over 2lbs. A good evening was had by all with plenty of Spaniards also fishing with their six hook rigs with bread bait and sinker. A good few rod benders were caught on the method. ‘Dizzy John’ = 3 fish = 1 palomete, 2 horse mackerel. ‘Tony always laughing’ = 5 fish = 3 palomete, 2 horse mackerel. ‘Rock Steady Eddy’ = 6 fish = 3 palomete, 1 bogue, 2 horse mackerel. ‘Lucky Luke’ = 8 fish = 5 palomete,
19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Thursday 25th July in sweltering temperatures 27 members of The 19th Hole Golf Society met at Aguilon Golf course to battle for the monthly medal. The course looks like an oasis as you approach, with lush green fairways and deep green greens all perfectly conditioned for our prestige’s medal trophie round. Several of the attendant members had attended the Neil Evans Coaching Clinic at Desert Springs on the previous Monday and were eager to put in to practice what Neil had told them. First group off included a new Old Age Pensioner, Terry Caddick had celebrated his 65th birthday the day before and looked as if he might have celebrated a wee bit too much finishing with a score of Nett 83. Maybe part of his drop in form could be attributed to trying not to look to pleased when his playing partner Brian(Dee)Lowden put his first drive straight into the water. Terry
very kindly sponsored a Nearest the Pin competition on Hole No 10 which was won byNick Pogson. Several good scores in the 70s were recorded but without doubt the star of this show was Nekana, playing off 36 Nekki scored a Nett 66 to easily take the Ladies Medal, and a two shot cut in handicap!!, Christine Dow captured second place with a Nett 82. The winner of the Mens Division with a Nett score of 71 (par for the course) was Craig Steers, unfortunately we were unable to present Craig with the Medal Trophy as the previous winner(Nick Pogson) forgot to bring it with him!. Good performances from Dave Denyer and Nick Pogson secured second and third places for them only split on countback having both scored Nett 74 Results July Medal Round. ‘Puentes Ray’ made his usual 6am start to Puentes, a beautiful morning with no wind. He decided to try a new spot so found a place between some submerged bushes with about 6 feet of water. He began fishing a waggler, size 10 hook and single sweet corn. Instead of the usual balls of ground bait he loose fed with pellet, mini frankfurter and corn. Ray was into carp straight away mostly around 2lb mark and he continued to catch steadily throughout day. Later in the afternoon he changed over to feeder with good results, biggest carp 3lb and several barbel to 2lb. He met up with new friends Fred and Dave during the course of day and showed them a few spots to fish and he thinks they ended up with quite a nice bag. Ray finished up with 91 fish and a bad back, but well worth it. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. On one of these trips above, Sid can’t remember which, (It’s his age!) he was alongside a sun fish and close by on the water was a seagull. The sunfish deliberately changed the direction it was swimming and swam towards the seagull. When it was about 4 feet away it shot a spout of water and got the gull mid chest. Sid said he doesn’t know who was more shocked, him and his friends or the seagull.
