your private health insurer in Spain

“Sorry – I can´t help you with that” How many times have you heard that sentence lately? Maybe you are experiencing problems with your current private medical insurer, medical staff not speaking your language, not fully understanding your Sip card entitlements, or how you may be able to qualify for a Spanish health service, which after the latest reforms is experiencing further serious cuts on health care costs causing long waiting lists for consultations, diagnostics and surgeries. Whatever your problem, if ASSSA can help – we will! Why would ASSSA insurance company be prepared to give impartial and non-obligatory advice, you might ask? News

Solpellet was formed to deal with the increased demand for economical, clean heating solutions in Southern Spain. It’s a myth that its warm all year round in Spain and the reason the UK government still pay the Annual Heating Allowance to eligible Expatriates is because it gets very cold in the winter, especially in inland or elevated locations. Solpellet has the answer, following the trend of many northern European countries in the adoption of Wood pellets as a source of fuel. The last few years have seen fuel and energy prices rocket and gas, oil and electricity show little sign of ever being cheap again (if indeed they ever were). It’s time to look for alternative methods of heating and an increasingly popular contender is compressed wood, otherwise known as biomass or wood pellets. Why pellets are better than traditional sources of heating

• Greener – Wood or biomass pellets burn cleanly and are better for the environment. Compared to other solid fuel appliances, pellet burners emit the lowest level of pollutants, virtually no smell, and there is no smoke. What’s more the ash trays only need emptying 1 -2 times per week on average. • Cheaper – The pellets are made from compressed sawdust from saw mills and timber yards. A 15kg bag costs between 3 and 5 euros and are roughly half the cost of the oil required to provide the same amount of heat. • Easier – The automatic control mechanism feeds the pellets from hopper to burn-pot means the fire is self-regulating. A timer allows programming of on and off times giving total control over the home’s heating. • Efficient – Electric and gas heaters tend to operate at around 75% efficiency. Pellet burners average 85% and those from Solpellet perform at 90% or more. Solpellet are based on the Costa Cálida and supply high quality Italian-made pellet stoves and boilers to the Murcia, Alicante and Almeria provinces. Given that fuel pellets are currently half the cost of oil, it’s an option worth exploring, call now for a no obligation chat to discuss your requirements.

Almanzora Charitable Theatre A.C.T. will be having another theatre supper evening at Bar / Restaurante “La Parrilla” from the 7th. to the 9th. November, being the weekend following the Albox Feria which should make it a noteworthy date.

The lead feature of the evening is “Heads” a play by Alistair Falkner where family dynamics give impulse and emotion to the plot. An old difference of opinion provoked a mother and daughter into not talking and not seeing each other for a dozen years or more. This exclusion from the family which included the daughter not even attending her father’s funeral, provides the nub for a canny conclusion. The production will finish with “Fiesta Fandango” by Richard Tydeman. The spotlight in this play focuses on a

OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR...

After so many months of rehearsals – performance time is suddenly upon us!!! There are not many tickets left for the shows at Miraflores, Camping Los Gallardos…20/21/22/23 September…but you can still purchase tickets for 28 and 29 September at Teatro Pedro Gilabert, Arboleas. At last, our sweet little car has a name. We would like to thank all those who took part in our NAME THAT CAR competition – the job of choosing the right name was made more difficult by the large number of replies we received. However the name that seemed to almost jump from the page and was a unanimous winner is the name BERTIE suggested by Pamela Howe of Los Gallardos. Her entry read “Just came to mind, like Burlington Bertie! He looks like a Bertie”. Pamela Howe wins 2 tickets plus a pre-show supper at Miraflores. Also more wonderful sponsorship

news…Michael Davies (Davies Solicitors) and Mojacar – “windows, doors, bathrooms, kitchens and more!” are generously sponsoring 2 of our shows and paying 120 euros for the performing rights. This money will be contributed to the charities Help for Heroes and The British Legion. Any mention you can give us…gratefully received!!!

family of Spanish gentry where Don Lopez, the father, has arranged for his daughter to marry an old, and in his eyes, very desirable suitor. The fact that ‘old’ means worn out and decrepit in the eyes of Rosina, his daughter, makes the proposition somewhat unattractive. A cave in Spain containing some of the world’s most precious prehistoric art will stay open for trial visits after decades closed for conservation reasons. Experts who launched small trial viewings in February at the Altamira cave to see whether the ancient paintings could withstand the breath and germs of visitors have now decided to extend them, the culture ministry said. Renowned for its 14,000-year-old paintings of red bison, the cave closed in 2002 for fear that moisture and microscopic fungi introduced by visitors would ruin the prehistoric paint. This year’s trial visits of small groups showed “no relation of cause and effect between the presence of researchers and visitors... and the loss of pigment”, the ministry said in a statement. Experts have now decided to continue

Spain’s prehistoric cave art open to lucky few letting five visitors per week into the cave until next February in order to monitor the effect on the ancient masterpieces over a year, it said. The highlight of the cave is a set of paintings, at least 14,000 years old, of red and yellow bison plus horses, deer, humans with the heads of animals and mysterious symbols. UNESCO listed the paintings as a World Heritage Site in 1985, describing them as “masterpieces of creative genius and... humanity’s earliest accomplished art”. The cave was discovered in 1868 at Santillana del Mar in Spain’s northern Cantabria region. During the closure, visitors have had to make do with replicas of the paintings, with only scientists allowed into the cave to carry out research. Source: www.thelocal.es

he became a ball freak and would run after a ball most of the day. Some thought that he had a mental disorder, but it was pure boredom and frustration at his sad situation. A German Shepherd needs chores to realise, followed by the acknowledgement and praises of a master for a job well done. Being one of 300 dogs at the shelter, SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR’, it was impossible to give him the individual attention he craved. It was recognised at the shelter that he was very affectionate with the volunteers when they took him out for his monthly walk. Unfortunately it is impossible to take the dogs out more often than that. However, finally it was BOND’S fortunate day. A Spanish lady, with a country house and a big garden in Cáceres, became aware of him on Facebook. She decided that she wanted to give BOND a forever home. The people at the shelter were overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of a forever home for BOND. When the first pictures of BOND at his finca started coming in, they knew that BOND at last would be a happy dog for the rest of his life. If only all the dogs at the shelter could someday experience the same joy. However BOND’S story proves that hope should never be abandoned. Scotland Says ‘NO’ To Independence. How Will It Affect Catalonia? By Martin Shortland

The most eagerly awaited referendum to take place, not just in the UK, but throughout Europe, reached its nail biting conclusion in the early hours of Friday morning. The major political parties had been fighting a sometimes bitter campaign, over what could effectively bring about the break - up of the Union, which had joined England with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for some 300 years. The First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, had placed ‘Independence for Scotland’ at the top of his political agenda, ever since he was elected to office more than ten years ago. His wish for a referendum on the subject was finally and grudgingly granted by David Camerons government last year and millions of Scots went to the polling stations on Thursday to cast their votes. When the announcement was made that the ‘NO’ campaign had triumphed, therefore ensuring the continued presence of Scotland within the United Kingdom, a huge sigh of relief was almost palpable, not only from central government in Westminster, but in government buildings across Europe. Independence movements exist in most European countries and the outcome of the Scottish referendum – if it had been successful – would have brought about a surge of requests from groups seeking to break away from what they consider to be the oppressive power of centralized government. None more so than in Spain, where the Catalonian Independence Party and the Basque Separatist Party have both been pressing for independence for some thirty years. In the case of the Basque Separatists, their often violent campaign has won few friends outside the region, as well as being condemned by many who live within the region, which straddles the border between the South Western corner of France and the North Western corner of Spain. In the build up to the Scottish vote, a number of debates took place in the Spanish parliament; strongly fuelled by pressure from the Catalan quarter and equally strongly defended by the Prime Minister and his party. On the day before the Scottish vote – last Wednesday - the Prime minister said in Parliament that a YES vote in Scotland would bring about ‘a catastrophic reaction within Europe’, which he said could well break up the European Union and ‘cast us back to the dark ages.’ Later in the day, the Prime Minister and the leader of the economically powerful Catalonia region held a crucial face-toface meeting in what was considered to be a final chance to resolve a bitter dispute over the region’s plans to hold a secession referendum in November. The independence campaign holds profound consequences for Spain, as it emerges from its worst economic crisis in a generation, with Catalonia as a major

force in that campaign. The closed door session between PM Marian Rajoy and Catalonia President Artur Mas, followed months of clamor by political parties and business groups for the two to sit down and try to come up with a roadmap to prevent the dispute from boiling over — but there was little expectation they would succeed, the dispute runs too deep. The main points are these: Rajoy has said he’ll never discuss a referendum which he says would violate Spain’s Constitution, while Mas insists he cannot negotiate while Spain alienates Catalans by preventing a right to selfdetermination. Stalemate. Commenting before the meeting took place, university professor and political analyst Antonio Barroso said, “The meeting will merely confirm the clash between Madrid and the Catalan regional government,” adding, “While Rajoy is willing to provide certain concessions to Catalonia on the fiscal front, it is highly improbable that he will agree to a deal, if Mas does not first withdraw his proposal to hold a referendum.” Only Mas was expected to hold a press conference after the meeting, which turned out to be the case and he was guarded in his brief comment, saying they had covered a number of issues pertaining to the debate. Read into that what you will. To me it says, stalemate. Pro-independence sentiment in Catalonia has grown greatly in recent years, fueled by a sense that the region deserves better economic and political treatment from Madrid. In the proposed referendum, with a provisional date set for 9th November, the regional government will ask voters if they want Catalonia to be a state and, if so, should it be independent? Polls show that while a strong majority of Catalonia’s 7.5 million residents want the ballot, only around half favor severing ties. Spanish lawmakers, who overwhelmingly reject the referendum, argue that Catalonians alone cannot decide something that affects all of Spain. Not dissimilar to what English people feel about Scottish politicians being able to vote on purely English issues. The referendum has stirred debate about whether Spain’s 1978 Constitution should be reformed to devolve more power to the country’s 17 regions and calm territorial unease. An equally strong feeling runs here in Andalucia; again the sense of the region deserving better economic and political treatment from Madrid has grown substantially in the last few years. An opinion poll published last week by leading newspaper El Pais, showed 62 % of Spaniards favoured PM Rajoy negotiating a reform of the Constitution that would satisfy Catalonia, in exchange for Catalan leader Mas halting the referendum. Mas began openly pushing for the independence poll after he failed to clinch a better financial pact for

11

News Catalonia in 2012. However, the surge in independence sentiment stems from June 2010, when the Constitutional Court struck down key parts of a groundbreaking charter that would have granted Catalonia more autonomy and recognized it as a nation within Spain. The region, whose capital is Barcelona, is fiercely proud of its language and distinct cultural traditions. Many of its people are convinced that independence would benefit them economically. However, both the European Union and NATO have warned such a new state would have to reapply for membership, a scenario unappealing to a people who pride themselves on their common sense and business savvy. The talks were the last chance of reaching a deal before the onset of what could be a stormy political autumn. Both politicians will have been aware of the huge turnout on 11th September - Catalonia National Day which saw more than a million people on the streets of Barcelona in a show of strength for independence. Mas is on record as saying he believed a win for the YES vote in Scotland could boost Catalonia’s bid, although a NO victory could equally throw cold water onto the pro-independence camp. Bring out the buckets of cold water now and where does this leave Mas and his campaign? The outcome in Scotland will have damaged his political standing and the strength of the campaign. It’s doubtful though he will follow Alex Salmond and step down from his post; that could come soon though, if he fails to pass a

law through the Catalan Council allowing the referendum — but any such move is almost certain to be challenged by Rajoy in Spain’s Constitutional Court. If the referendum is delayed, that could push Mas to call early regional elections, but he knows his conservative Convergence and Union party has already lost much ground to its parliamentary supporters, the pro-independence Republican Left of Catalonia party. The Scottish vote will have hurt. In turn, Rajoy faces his own set of problems. A general election is due next year and his party — which has seen its popularity plunge owing to corruption scandals, the economic crisis and skyhigh 25% unemployment — could be severely punished if it is seen to give in on the referendum issue or treat Catalonia preferentially. Neither has much room for maneuver, the country is in a pre-electoral period and that restricts both sides. The similarities with the UK are close. The David Cameron led coalition also faces a tricky 12 months with an election next year as well. He has to be seen to be responding to the Scottish NO vote, by offering to devolve more power, Wales and the regions will want some of that too. Election promises are notoriously fragile, so it will be interesting to see how far, realistically, he’s prepared to go, in order to regain a political foothold in Scotland again and encourage more political freedom generally throughout the country.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. “Hello World”! Go on, Admit it, you’re a little confused, maybe even a little intrigued. Don’t be, because today’s article is about something that every computer student has to go through. By this, I mean, programming. I can almost hear the groans of disbelief and despair coming from many of you good readers, but let me, in my own individual way, help you understand the very core of every Program, Application and (forgive me!!!) App that you use. The sub-species (and I mean that with much tongue in cheek) of ‘homo sapien’ commonly known as the ‘programmer’, ‘coder’, ‘hacker’ (from the days when newspaper writers used typewriters that needed to be hit hard to work – hence ‘Hack’) and even ‘Wizard’, spend their lives solving problems. You, good reader, will do a Crossword, a Puzzle or Sudoku with the intent of solving questions, puzzles and conundrums. It is possibly because you have a desire to win or to prove that you still can beat the quiz master – and quite right too! For the people who live in the ‘Blue Nowhere’ (a euphemism for the internet) their very nature is one of curiosity. During their younger years they might spend the summer days wandering meadows following a trail left by some small animal or maybe disassemble everything in sight just to find out how it worked. These people are the inventors, those with minds of Willow, both flexible and incredibly strong. This curiosity leads to tenacity, a need to see something to the end, regardless of effort. It is because of these qualities that we should ‘Give credit where it is due’ as my dad was fond of saying. When you’re working out your Sudoku or Crossword puzzle, you are using rules.

These can be learned through trial and error or by the beneficent assistance of someone much wiser. In that regards Programmers are very similar! We are taught (or learn) rules of logic, given syntax to follow and a language of strict words to learn. These are the tools of the programmer and without them you, program’s user, wouldn’t be able to write an article or love letter in your favourite word processor or do any one of a thousand things that you take for granted every day when using your computer. So let’s go back to the beginning when I said “Hello World”. This is an in-joke. Everyone who starts to program, regardless of their chosen programming language (and there are many), invariably writes their first program which prints out a message, and this message is “Hello World”. This is because that it is the simplest of working programs that can be done in most programming languages. In BASIC, which was the first programming language I learned so long ago I don’t care to remember, it goes like this: 10 PRINT “Hello World!” = Line number → Command → Text for displaying It printed Hello World on my TV screen (remember the days when home computers used the house TV!). It has been a long time since I have programmed and am really finding the challenge, well challenging! Like the Willow Tree, I may bend in the breeze of uncertainty but I will absolutely not give in until I have completed my task. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further articles that will be useful to you.

ASpainhistory of Moorish Spain (1) and the Iberian Peninsula almost the entire peninsula and even

was, in times past part of the Roman Empire, then the Visigoths, and lastly under Moorish control. The ‘Moors’ were actually composed of two tribes; Berbers and Arabs who hailed from Mauritania (south of Morocco). Religion is all too often the sad catalyst for warfare and the Moors converted to Islam around 700AD. Around the same time the heirs of the Visigoth king Witiza on the peninsula had been usurped by Roderick (remember Life of Brian? We want Woderick!) He had been chosen by nobles to reign instead of King Witiza’s son and indeed he later killed him in battle. King Roderick ruled for just a year from 710-711 as King Witiza’s heirs asked the Moors for help; their leader Tarik ibn Ziyad crossed the sea with his mercenary army and landed at Jebelal-Tarik or Tarik’s mountain which we know as Gibraltar. Roderick was defeated but instead of handing power back to the Visigoths, Tarik called up reinforcements and the Moorish invasion began. Within 20 years the Moors had conquered

crossed the Pyrenees into Frankish territory before being defeated in battle by Charles Mantel in 733. The mountainous region of the Asturias in the far north then called Ishbaniya, was ruled by Pelayo and proved too much for the Moors to conquer. Apparently Manuza the Moorish Governor of Leon took a fancy to Pelayos sister and got permission from Tarik to try and take Pelayo hostage and transfer him to Cordoba. Manuza was slain after defeat by Pelayo at the battle of Covadonga around 720. Asturias became a refuge for fleeing Christian nobles and an independent kingdom was established here in 722 by the now King Pelayo. Asturias became the starting point for the Christian reconquest of Spain. King Pelayos daughter married a local Chieftain called Alfonso. Pelayo died in 737 after reigning for almost eighteen years and recapturing about a quarter of the peninsula. In 749 Abd-er-Rahman survived a brutal massacre in Damascus of the

passwords!!!

I’m sure you know what I mean. That moment, that dreaded moment in the supermarket, when you’ve put your password into that hand held device, only for it display everybody’s nightmare phrase-user name or password incorrect. You chance a guilty look behind and see the queue of shoppers, trolleys twitching angrily, growing by the second, all staring angrily at you, daring you to get it wrong for a second time. Invariably, you do, whilst all the time being subject to the steely glare of the person on the till, who appears to be expecting you to bolt for the exit without paying. What a nightmare passwords are, well for most of us anyway. James Bond never seems to have a problem remembering them. He sees something once and that’s it, he remembers it forever, well at least until the end of the film, which incidentally, is longer than I can ordinarily keep a password in my head. I had a few hours to spare and got to wondering, as you do, how passwords first came about? What made some mischievous person come up with the idea in the first place? Believe it or not they’ve been around for a long long time. Just read the beginning of Hamlet, I’m sure that was already on your things to do list for today. But if you do happen upon it, you’ll see that a password is used right at the start. We can’t blame Shakespeare, although he does get the blame for a number of things, mostly for a boring hour or so spent in a classroom listening to his plays being read, badly, by students! No, it seems that the real culprits were those Ancient Egyptians. Apparently they had to give a password for getting into places and easing their way past guards with pointy spears. Is that worse than the twitching trolleys? I’m not awfully sure it is. One of the advantages those Egyptians had over us is that they didn’t have to remember so many passwords. I’ve always thought that I was the clever one by keeping my passwords simple-you know, 12345 or even, passwordbut apparently they are the most popular passwords of all. So, just as I thought all along...I’m not so clever at all. Or maybe I am. If I change my password to “Incorrect” then if I forget it, the machine will simply remind me! Brilliant! ruling Umayyad dynasty. The Abbassid family had invited 80 unsuspecting Umayyad leaders to a banquet where they were promptly murdered. The Abbasids then became the Caliphs of Baghdad so starting the Golden Age of Islamic culture. Somehow Abd-er Rahman managed to escape and he fled to Morocco where supporters prepared for him to cross to Granada which he did in 755 to Almunecar. There he defeated his opponents and he was declared Emir of Al-Andalus starting a new Umayyad dynasty and ruled for 30 years. Thus the Empire was split into two factions The Umayyad to the west and the Abbassid to the east. At this time the Islamic Empire extended across the whole of North Africa towards China and in 751 AD the Abbassids defeated the Chinese at the battle of Samarkand in what is now Uzbekistan. This was culturally a very important place as it was on the famed silk route linking east and

west and new techniques of paper manufacturing were being developed here. Some paper manufacturers were kidnapped at the battle and taught the Arab conquerors the art of papermaking. Slowly the use of paper spread westwards throughout the Empire and a new age of learning or enlightenment began. The Church at Cordoba was bought from the Visigoth Christians by Abder-Rahman; the task of converting the former Christian church into a mosque started in 784AD, and lasted 200 years. Traditionally the Mihrab in a mosque faces south-east towards Mecca so praying worshippers face the correct way. In the case of the Mezquita (which is named after Abd-er-Rahmans wife) the Mihrab faces south. Either the old church foundations were used, or because southwards lies Damascus the scene of Abd-er Rahmans lucky escape four decades earlier!

First-hand information and the chance to browse overseas homes and make valuable contacts will be on offer in coming weeks as the autumn property exhibitions in the UK get underway, with expectations they’ll be busier than 2013. Richard Way, Editor at OverseasGuidesCompany.com said: “With interest in foreign property, in particular the Spanish, Portuguese and French markets showing a marked year-on-year increase, exhibitors at events such as A Place in the Sun Live which takes place at the start of October, can look forward to being busy.” For people considering the purchase of an overseas home, whether as a primary or second home, or for investment, exhibitions are priceless for research. Meeting and speaking in person to people who are experienced in the overseas property sector is a great starting point for buyers, enabling them to find agents, lawyers

and other service providers they would be comfortable working with. “Exhibitions are a great way to make introductions and find companies you can trust when buying abroad, as well as learn from the free seminars,” said Richard Way. “We exhibit as much as we can and always encourage visitors to come and chat to our team. Another bonus is that exhibitors often offer promotions that are exclusive to an event, whether it’s reduced property or discounted viewing trips. We advise visitors to come prepared, know what they want to achieve from a long day at an exhibition, and not to be scared to ask questions. And of course, enjoy the event.” Richard Way will be on the seminar panel at A Place in the Sun Live at the NEC Birmingham, 3rd to 5th October 2014. The Overseas Guides company is exhibiting at stand A33. Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

Q. My mother and father need to move back to the u.k due to very bad health, with my mother moving into a home immediately on her return. They own a house and a bank account in Vera. Have you got any recommendations of things I should be thinking about from a legal point of while I am in Spain to help them organise their return. A. Absolutely. I would at least address the following matters: 1. Make sure there Spanish wills are in good order. Even if they are, it may be time to reconsider the clauses. If for example one of your parents is very ill it may not be convenient for the other partner to name him /her beneficiary. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure Internet banking is set up on their Spanish bank account. 4. Your parents may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with their Spanish assets. 5. Look in to the advantages/ disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on waiting for a better price From a tax point of view if they

are resident and over 65 it is in their advantage to sell before they lose their resident status in Spain as they are entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. When you get back to England start working on an enduring power of attorney to be used in the u.k. Very important: The above are the essential things that need to be looked into but I recommend that you and your parents visit their solicitor in Spain to run through their situation together before going back to the u.k. If you are not comfortable with their solicitor, simply make an appointment with a different solicitor but take all your paperwork with you (you must at least take copy of title deeds, NIE numbers, rates bills and copy of wills) . Depending on the circumstances, paperwork etc. it may be advantageous to take further actions or none at all. In any case it will be convenient for you to put a face to the solicitor and go through things together with him/ her and your parent to avoid nasty surprises regarding documentation in the future. What is a NIE? Why do I need one and where can I obtain one?

A NIE is a tax identification number assigned by the Spanish authorities to any foreigner, whether resident or non-resident, with interests in Spain or who may be contemplating taking certain actions in Spain. This number identifies you if you: are going to buy a home in Spain; need to sign a document before a Spanish notary; wish to become a Spanish resident; plan to start a business in Spain or take shares in, or become a director of, a Spanish company; or are a student registering on a Spanish university course. These are examples only. · You can apply for a NIE either in Spain or at the Spanish consulate nearest to you in your home country. You’ll need to file an application form and supply personal data, including an address for notifications, and state the reason for your application. You may be asked to supply supporting documentation. A photocopy of your passport – having first shown your original when making your application

– is also required. · Wherever you make your application, it’ll be sent for processing to the police authority in Madrid responsible for issuing NIEs. It usually takes at least two months for them to issue the NIE. So don’t leave getting your NIE to the last minute! · Your NIE will be sent in the form of a confirmatory letter. Keep it safe (taking a photocopy of it and keeping that photocopy in a separate location). It’s difficult and time consuming to obtain duplicates. · As said, you can also apply for a NIE in Spain, as long as you’re in the country legally. So if you’re an EU resident you may take advantage of a holiday in Spain to apply for a NIE locally. Contrast with non-EU residents who can only apply for NIEs in Spain if they prove their presence in the country is legal, either by producing their visa or other authorisation validating their stay. If applying in Spain, note that an appointment must be made and the date given cannot be changed.

Where There’s Smoke: A Novella by Jodi Picoult.

“I might as well be a ghost. Last week, I was famous. This week, if I speak, no one will listen.” If you’re into psychics and the supernatural you’ll like this. It’s available as an ereader, a prequel to promote “Leaving Time” which will be available this autumn and is expected to be another best-seller from the popular American writer. Serendipity Jones experienced visions from a young age. When she indicated to her mother that a little boy dressed in knee-length black velvet trousers with a lacy collar around his neck was stealing things from their home, she thought her daughter was telling tales. “That boy’s not real.” This was back in the seventies. “If this had been today I would probably have been shuttled off to a child psychiatrist and given some kick-ass medication.” Serendipity’s great-great grandma had been an Iroquois healer. The story moves into 1993 and outlined the protagonist’s successful career as a psychic accompanied by her sentinels, referred to as her gatekeepers: Lucinda is a refined, elderly African-American woman whereas Desmond is a fierce, feisty, gay man. Both spirits leave Serendipity high and dry at one stage when she feels more of a charlatan,

a fraud than a genuine psychic.

t h e

Her father committed suicide and the family were so poor that they survived on Campbell weeks, basically meaning that they ate canned soup until mother’s next paycheck. Now the situation is different. They both live in Malibu and life is luxurious. “She can eat caviar if she wants to instead of tomato soup.” Cleo was a chat-show host and Serendipity was invited to do a reading for her. It proved so successful that Cleo was awarded an Emmy and Serendipity was given a spin-off along with instant fame and fortune. Her newest guest is Betsey Rycroft from California whose husband had died in Karbala, Iraq. The same day she received the tragic news, she learned of her pregnancy. Marcy, the executive producer “believes a militarythemed show will be a ratings booster.” Unfortunately the paranormal can be unpredictable and explosive as Serendipity discovers when she is confronted by a poltergeist, intense heat and burning. There is panic in

hurtled at her that she is antiwar, anti-American and a traitor. In order to restore Serendipity’s reputation as the nation’s favourite psychic Marcy decides that she will help find the son of a senator who had been kidnapped recently. Ratings restored and everyone happy. What could go wrong? What happened when her psychic sentinels abandon her and the Senator is so tanked up on alcohol and his wife doped up on anti-anxiety meds which meant no connection with the paranormal, no energy. Does this mean the end of her wonderful career? A shocking discovery awaits if you can stomach the horror. “Sometimes, all you can do is watch things burn, and wait for the ash to settle.” If you like the sound of this free ereader then you’ll meet up with Serendipity and others in “Leaving Time.” Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton. Available free from Amazon.

Cut each half into 3.5 cm (1½ in) thick slices, leaving the slices attached at the base. Hold the slices apart and spread each one thinly with pesto, then press them back together. Wrap the bread in foil and set aside. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and fry gently for 5 minutes or until softened but not browned. Stir in the peppers and cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour in the stock and remove from the heat. Place the bread in the oven to heat for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, purée the soup in a blender until smooth. Return the soup to the pan and stir in the passata, thyme, cinnamon and sugar. Heat the soup gently without allowing it to boil. Season to taste. Ladle the soup into warm bowls and garnish each portion with a spoonful of crème fraîche and a sprig of basil. Serve with the hot pesto bread. Source: www.allrecipes.co.uk

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

www.soltimes.com

One man and his dog, that is Pete and Lucy, the Dog That Is Not Ours, went out for their saunter in the campo and came home as one man and his dog and a cat. The cat greeted me joyously, though I have since discovered that she greets every human with ecstatic enthusiasm. She is a most appealing cat, both in appearance and manner, and as she is almost completely black she would make a good Witch’s Familiar, thus the name *Magrat seemed appropriate. The following day our garden was still the cat’s favoured residence, so with the aid of Andy and his cat box, and the co-operation of Magrat, who seemed quite keen on a car trip around Andalucia, we set out to find her a permanent home. We exhausted all possibilities both charitable and private in Albox and Arboleas, then desperately followed a promising lead up the Arroyo Acietuno, looking for a place described as ‘up, up in the mountains’. Andy drove ever upwards, to infinity and beyond while I worried and stressed and Magrat calmly admired the scenery. We drove so far into the middle of Nowhere that I was convinced that we were going to disappear down Nowhere’s navel, but eventually we reached Los Uteras, which is pretty much the same thing! Our efforts were again in vain – even my offer of good hard cash out of my own

pocket to pay for Magrat’s bed and board until she found a home bore no fruit. Magrat, Lucy and I would be delighted for her to continue in residence, but she is a victim of her own affectionate nature – Pete, who is not too steady on his pins, can not run the risk being brought down by a cat lovingly wrapping itself around his legs. Next day Magrat casually introduced us to her two kittens, about 8 weeks old, which she had presumably been hiding in the campo. They were copybook cute and very quick, but not quick enough – today there was one kitten and a lot of fluff spread over the campo behind our house. I am at my wits’ end. I urgently need a home for Magrat and her one remaining kitten, Etcetera, before Etcetera too becomes a snack for some passing fox. *Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series feature Magrat, whose tender heart and loving nature compensate for her ineffectiveness as a Witch. She was christened Magrat by accident josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk – her mother misspelt Margaret.

pause for thought

There’ve been a number of fairly high profile cases this past year where folk have been sacked for wearing a cross at work. And whether we support their right to wear that particular religious symbol or their employer’s right to disallow it probably depends on our own particular religious convictions. For a cross has little significance in its own right. A particularly inhumane instrument of torture and death, considered by religious leaders of the day to indicate rejection by God, the cross was used to make examples of certain convicted criminals, to deter others from following them. So a cross, on the face of it, speaks of abject failure and God’s judgement. Not then something with which reasonable folk would wish to be associated. But to a Christian, the cross has immense significance, reminding us that of ourselves we can do nothing to earn God’s favour. That our best endeavours are so ineffectual that a truly radical solution had to be found if there were to be any chance of a restored relationship between ourselves and God. And that solution required the death, the judgement and the rejection by God of the only truly good and perfect person to have ever lived, as substitute for all the rest of us. That in essence is the Christian

alqueria

viewpoint The Call Centre

Following the collapse of the Alquerian tourist industry and the subsequent legal action the Village Republic needed to replenish its coffers. There was no shortage of suggestions. Bank robbery, hostage taking were all discussed even the more ridiculous suggestion of actually working for a living was mooted. Always eager to take the easy option, it was decided to set up a call centre in Alqueria. A customer had already been found in the shape of a large British telecommunications company. The success of the employment drive for the call centre was variable. Due to high power inertia that exists in Alqueria there were only two applicants. Loco Paco, who thought it was a competition to win a years supply of axolotl food and Blythe Gruntmore, eager to converse in his own language once more. The fact that Blythe Gruntmore’s Geordie accent was incomprehensible to anyone south of Newcastle was unknown to most Alquerians. However the British were used to call centres where operators couldn’t string a coherent sentence together. As it was Britain that this service was aimed there shouldn’t be a problem. Loco Paco, apart from not speaking a word of English had a poor track record with people and even animals for that matter. People he kept

at arms length in case they intruded into the make-believe world he had built up around himself. As far as animals were concerned the first Saharan Dung Beetle he trained soon discovered he was Paco’s intellectual superior and moved out. The Beetle still lives in the Village. If they accidentally bump into one-another they try to avoid all eye contact. As the switchboard lit up for the first time and the centre went live Blythe got into his stride. Such gems as “Rabooot yer rooutah, pet” and “Wheeel hev te sen a gadgie te check yer foone bonny lad” soon assailed the ears of callers . As no-one could understand this gibberish no-one could argue with his advice. Loco Paco who couldn’t understand a word simply selected an answer at random from a type written sheet of paper and read the English which he made unfathomable with Spanish pronunciations and accent. He would often break into Spanish telling the unfortunate individual on the other end of the phone all about his imaginary five foot tall rodent friend Bert. Even though callers became irritated, swore and issued death threats the call centre was a great success. It was cheap, eroded the callers will to live so much so that their complaint seemed insignificant compared to the hell of calling the call centre. After all isn’t this the real purpose of these places.

faith.

So, to us as Christians, the cross symbolises restoration; it reminds us of the value God places on each of us that we should be worth so great a sacrifice. It reminds us that forgiveness of wrong in our lives is available to all, and not just the good, the wise or the very religious. That it depends, not on my doing the best I can, but of simply accepting, however little my understanding, God’s offer to attribute all my wrongdoings to the crucified Christ. So St Paul wrote: “We preach Christ crucified; inconsistent and offensive to the religious and utter stupidity to those who consider themselves intellectual, but to those who acknowledge him, whatever their circumstances, the power and the wisdom of God.”

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

sport

Santa Irene Club de Vela (Sailing Club) Formed by John Talliss in June 2002, the club started with just four members; now it has 46. Based in Garrucha, the members keep their crafts in the boat yard next to the new section of the marina; cruiser members have moorings in both the new and the old sections. The club is primarily for dinghy boat sailors but there are members who also sail cruising vessels. There isn’t a training facility but there is an opportunity to learn about sailing by going out with members who give up their time to introduce newcomers to the sport. The club retains a Wayfarer dingy an ideal boat in which to learn to sail Members meet every Sunday at 10.30am at the Garrucha base. After a quick coffee at nearby La Oficina, it’s out for a morning’s sail. Safety is a major consideration for all sailors, especially dinghy sailors. Spanish wind conditions can change within seconds yet sailing takes place every Sunday, weather permitting, in the company of a safety boat. The club has arranged advantageous rates with the port authorities for the use of the slipway and for mooring boats in the dinghy park. For cruiser owners, membership provides access to several crew, some of whom have ocean experience and a sound knowledge of seamanship and navigation. While most members want to go sailing, there are sub-divisions of

interest too, such as walking, diving, table tennis and petanca. And there are often four social evenings a year. The club needs more members to ensure a continued enthusiasm in sailing and for it to meet its goals. Most clubs have between 20-80 members - 20% drive the club; 80% enjoy other functions and right now, the club is seeking affiliation with a training agency to create a symbiotic relationship with other clubs, to train members, and point people in the right direction regarding sailing. You can buy dinghies cheaply but newer and more advanced boats can be expensive. A group of 3 or 4 people jointly owning a boat can trim the costs greatly and can create a great camaraderie. There will be an Open Day at the boat yard in Garrucha on Saturday, 27th September - designed to raise the profile of the club within the community. Many boats will be there for all to see and admire while several club members will be present to answer questions about the sport of sailing. And most importantly, you will have an opportunity to book a trial sail in a dinghy or a cruiser for absolutely free and for those who might prefer something motorised, the club RIB. There will be no sales persons and you can enjoy all this over a glass of refreshment. How about that for a bargain! You club contact is: ian@roriston. com

A full scale health alert for the deadly Ebola virus was set in motion last week in Roquetas de Mar. An African man admitted to the towns Health Centre on Wednesday, was suspected to be suffering from the disease. The 33 year old had recently arrived in Spain from Guinea, one of the many West African countries which have been ravaged by the epidemic. The Health Centre was evacuated and closed and all medical staff who’d been in contact with the man were segregated in case the infection had been passed to them. The man was quickly transferred via a specially adapted ambulance to the Isolation Unit at the Torrecardenas Hospital in Almeria, where a series of tests were carried out. The unit has only recently been opened in order to respond to the threat of Ebola contamination spreading to mainland Spain. The samples from the tests were sent to the Microbiology laboratory at the Carlos III hospital in Madrid. This part of Andalucia is one of the biggest entry points for illegal immigrants and only last Friday, a boat containing 80 people – 20 of them children – was intercepted off the coast of Almerimar. The vessel was escorted to the port of Almeria where Health an Immigration officials processed them at another special centre at the docks, set up for such situations. The adults are now in custody, awaiting repatriation to their country of origin; the children are being cared for by the social services agency. The results of the tests were released late on Thursday night, by the head of the Regional Health Authority in Roquetas, Juan Montoya, who said the man was suffering from malaria, not Ebola. He explained, “The symptoms of the two diseases are quite similar in the early stages, with high fever, back pain and vomiting.” Malaria is only transmitted by a mosquito bite and although it’s very common in Africa, is rarely fatal if treated early enough. He added that, “Ebola is out of the question, but under the present circumstances regarding the epidemic in Africa, we must take every precaution possible when we suspect a case.” Many people are under the misconception the Ebola virus is carried in the air and can be caught rather like a cold or the flu. This is not the case. It can only be transferred by the exchanging of infected body fluids – saliva or blood – from one person to another. The Health Centre was reopened on Friday morning and Mr Montoya complemented all the staff for the way they responded to the scare, he said, “We have undergone many weeks of training in order to

respond to a situation like this and the personnel at the centre were magnificent.” Health Authorities across Europe have set up similar emergency procedures in order to cope with any possible spread of the disease. If proven to have been positive, this would have been the first case of the disease in Spain. The Tropical Disease Unit at the Torrecadenas Hospital is one of the most advanced in Spain and has only recently undergone a major overhaul to bring its response capability in line with other similar units worldwide. The head of the unit, Miguel Sanchez, speaking to the press on Monday said they were constantly prepared for an outbreak of any disease, transmitted into Spain from other countries. He wanted to reassure the general public that, under normal circumstances, any threat from a tropical disease – like Ebola – could be treated and contained very quickly, if such a situation ever arose. He said, “Our capability to deal with any ‘incoming’ disease from another continent is of the highest level, I want people to know that if the latest scare regarding the man from Guinea had been a case of Ebola, there would have been no threat to anyone and we would have treated the man accordingly.” Speaking on Monday as well, the head of the World Health Organisation Dietmar Riezler, said the Ebola crisis was a tragedy of huge proportions, which his organisation was doing everything possible to overcome. But he highlighted how difficult it was to contain such outbreaks in countries where health care was, in many cases, nonexistent. I visited the Roquetas Health Centre on Monday morning, just prior to filing this story and can report everything is very much back to normal. People I spoke to who were waiting for appointments, seemed unconcerned about the Ebola scare which took place last week. One man said he was more concerned about the operation his wife was due to undergo on Friday. A brief statement from the Health Centre manager, posted inside the reception area says – We would like to assure all our visitors that the suspected case of Ebola here last week (Wednesday) was diagnosed as malaria, a non infectious disease. Further information about both diseases can be obtained from the reception desk. For the moment, calm has been restored and one can only hope that’s how it remains.
