Police officer killed in Spanish capital

Emergency services tend to the alleged aggressor, who also fell onto the train tracks. The 28-year-old was reportedly shoved in front of train while trying to identify a citizen! A 28-year-old National Police officer was killed on Friday after being run over by a train at the Embajadores station in Madrid. The incident is reported to have taken place at around 12pm, after the policeman requested to see the identification papers of a man in the station. Sources from the authorities say that the man “intentionally” pushed the officer, and fell down onto the tracks with him. Both were hit by a train, but the citizen escaped with injuries. Via their Twitter account, the National Police said that they were “deeply concerned and in great pain over the death of our colleague who was working to ensure citizens are safe.” The incident was the second to cause disruption to Madrid’s transport networks on Friday, after a false bomb alert in Atocha station earlier in the morning. URBANIZATION WORKS IN MOJÁCAR

The Provincial Deputation of Almería has started work on the project ‘Mojácar Urbanization’ to be funded from the 2014 and 2015 Provincial Plans. The project, initially valued at €660,000 was awarded to the company Eiffage for €466,000. 55% of the cost is financed by The Provincial Deputation with Mojácar Council covering the remaining 45%. Mojácar has benefitted from the savings resulting from the deduction of its percentage share called “baja”, which means the difference of the initial price of the project and the final contracted price. In this case, Mojácar’s contribution is reduced from €297,000 to €103,000, which represents a saving for the Council´s coffers. The project ‘Mojácar Urbanization’ will allow basic improvements and infrastructure installations in various areas of Mojácar beach. These will consist of pavement repairs and resurfacing of the following streets:- Jesús de Perceval, Embrujo, Atalayones, Romance, Torrebahía, Pintor Morales, Picasso, Los Lomos del Cantal, Miguel Hernandez, Hermanos Machado, Vista de los Angeles,

Almería, Luna and Piedra Villazar. Rosa María Cano, the Mayor of Mojácar, said “With these investments, the municipality will see improvement of infrastructure and basic services, elements of unquestionable value to promote the development of the area and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants”. The improvement area is an important, high population density, centre so that the improvement works and refurbishments have been welcomed by local residents. Also included in the plans is a much needed rearrangement to the parking and pavements in the beach bar area. New, wider pavements will be installed along with designated loading and unloading areas as well as improved lighting. This will greatly improve the safety of pedestrians and ease the traffic flow in the area.

Robot waiters and kitchen staff

Chinese restaurants are using robot waiters to serve food to patrons. The robots can ferry food to tables, while other animatronic staff help to prepare food in the kitchens – performing straightforward tasks such as squirting cooking oil into pans.

Andalusian TV executive loses job over New Year’s Eve gaffe

A top executive for the Andalusian regional television network Canal Sur resigned late Thursday after the station’s live New Year’s Eve transmission from Almería was interrupted during the clock-chiming ceremony at midnight.

Song Yugang is the owner of one such eatery, the Tian Waike restaurant in Kunshan, southeast China. He says that using robots means that his normal staff roster can be cut by two-thirds. The restaurant showcases the products of Pangolin, a leading Chinese robot manufacturer. Similar restaurants have opened in Harbin and Chengdu. Pangolin claims that it has orders for thousands of food service robots and that it is thinking about opening similar restaurants overseas.

replaced by robots over the next two decades.

According to the China Robot Industry Alliance (CRIA), China is now the world’s largest consumer of robots, after overtaking Japan. The CRIA claims that China now buys a fifth of global robot output and that more than 36,000 robots were sold to the Chinese market last year, representing an annual rise of 36%. CRIA president Song Xiaogang predicts the figure will increase to 50,000 this year.

Over in Norway, however, scientists have designed and built a food service robot in the lab to automate the process of extracting breast fillets from chickens. This is a task normally carried out by skilled human workers.

Growth in sales of robots is not confined to China. In October, Oxford University released a study which said that 47% of the US workforce could be

For now the robots being marketed frequently have markedly limited functionality. Pangolin’s waiters cannot talk or perform skilled manual operations.

“Our aim is to automate absolutely everything we can think of on the food production line,” says Ekrem Misimi at SINTEF, an independent Scandinavian research organization. The goal is to make Norwegian food production more sustainable, in terms of profitability and efficient use of raw materials. ibtimes.co.uk/

According to an ongoing investigation, the gaffe is being blamed on “human error, involving at least three station employees.” Joaquín Durán, the assistant director at Radio-Television Andaluza (RTVA), announced late Thursday the resignation of José Luis Pereñíguez, who served as director of broadcasts and continuity at Canal Sur. The entire RTVA staff was said to be in “absolute dismay” after television screens across the region were interrupted by commercial breaks, leaving New Year’s Eve celebrators unable to follow the tradition of eating 12 grapes along with the chimes of the clock. “All of us here at RTVA apologize to Andalusians for this unfortunate error,” a spokesman for the regional public channel said after an emergency meeting of the station’s staff. We understand it was unintentional, but it hurt the feelings of all the people

in Almería”

“When these types of events are broadcast, they can either be done manually or pre-programmed, which was the case here. The commercial break was supposed to have occurred at 12.01am, right after the clock chimes, but instead broke in at midnight. Then someone tried to take control of the broadcast from Almería, and the live transmission resumed for a few seconds, but another commercial came on, and when they were finally able to eliminate it, the clock was on the 10th chime,” said the spokesman. The New Year’s Eve broadcast was held in Almería to mark the 1,000year anniversary of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Almería by Islamic conquerors. “Almería has become a New Year’s Eve joke,” said Jesús Muñoz, president of the citizens’ group Acción por Almería (Action for Almería). “The last time the New Year’s Eve broadcast was transmitted from Almería was in 1989. We understand that it was unintentional, but it has hurt the feelings of all the people in Almería.” Elpais.com

Homeless residents make lives in Spanish airport In Madrid airport’s bustling fourth terminal, Edu’s trolley is loaded with suitcases, but he won’t be checking them in. Unlike the thousands of Christmas travelers, he is not flying anywhere. For him the terminal is his destination — the closest thing he has to a home.

Nearly two years ago, the 49-yearold unemployed builder wandered into the airport while trying to hike up the highway to another town. “I came in here because I needed to sleep. And here I stayed,” Edu, who would not give his surname, told AFP. He is one of dozens who have made their home in the terminal, with its bright lights and huge glass windows overlooking the passenger planes on the runway. Like other hubs such as London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle, the airport’s warmth, security and free bathrooms, open round-the-clock, draw desperate down-and-outs who blend into the crowds of travellers. Madrid Barajas Adolfo Suarez

Airport — Europe’s fifth-busiest with 40 million passengers a year — is a public space, so authorities let the homeless sleep there as long as they cause no trouble. Police say there are at least 30 people sleeping permanently in terminal four but the number goes up in the winter. Two days before Christmas, officers said they counted 42. Poverty grew in Spain after a construction crash in 2008 threw millions out of work. Now the recession is officially over but the unemployment rate is still close to 24 percent. The latest official statistics count 23,000 homeless people in the country, but charities estimate the real figure is closer to 40,000. Having spent more than half his life in jail for a series of armed robberies, Gines Rubio, 52, landed in the street after being released two years ago, separated from his wife and two

sons. In the airport he can get up to 15 euros a day by begging. Like others, he eats at a soup kitchen in the suburbs in the day and comes back to the terminal in the evening. Like most of the airport’s residents, he chose the biggest and brightest

terminal, with plenty of floor space and quiet corners to curl up in. “People come to sleep in terminal four because it is the best,” said Rubio, a Madrid native with sunken features and a greying beard. “I am less cold here. There are bathrooms where you can wash your hair.” Sleeping on the floor there without a blanket, he gets a few hours’ sleep before the early crowds arrive for the morning flights to London, Paris, the United States and Latin America. “I’d like to rob half a million euros and get out of here. But I don’t resent the other people I see here leaving. They have earned it.” A miniature community has sprung up among the terminal’s residents, virtually all of them men. Edu charges a euro a bag to keep an eye on the others’ belongings. Some earn tips by pushing passengers’ luggage on trolleys and helping them find the right check-in desk. Among them is Valentin Giorgiev, a 60-year-old former school sports teacher from Bulgaria. Long separated from his wife and two children, he came to Spain a decade ago and worked at odd jobs until four years ago when he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Pushing his trolley around or drinking Coca Cola in the cafes, taking his medicine and washing in the airport toilets, he blends in with the crowds of passengers who scarcely notice him until he offers to lug their bags. At Christmas time he can earn up to 20 euros a day. His whole body aches from sleeping on the floor. “But this is the only place where you can earn a bit of money,” he said. “You see a lot of people in the street begging, but I would never do that.” He has friends in the terminal, most of them fellow Bulgarians. But there are also unseen adversaries, he says. “I have had lots of my clothes stolen. I feel bad,” he says, wiping away tears. “I have nothing.” Associated Free Press

Black Friday has changed the way we shop John Lewis has provided the clearest lives.

evidence yet that Black Friday has changed the way Britons shop. Its Christmas sales were outstripped by those at the end of November. The US phenomenon came here in 2010, brought by American–owned firms such as Amazon and Asda. Although it was slow to take off, once hard–pressed British retailers saw it could pump up sales they embraced it enthusiastically, as did their customers. What the John Lewis experience shows is that Black Friday has not increased the overall size of the shopping cake but merely changed the way it is sliced up. Canny shoppers with tight budgets took advantage of special offers in November but had less to spend in December. Christmas week will remain a big week, particularly for grocery shopping, but Black Friday has joined that other transatlantic import the turkey on our seasonal consumption calendar. Like Black Friday and the Cyber Monday that follows it, Christmas shopping is now increasingly done on the move via Smartphone’s and tablet computers. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first mobile phone call by Vodafone and it is amazing to consider how mobiles have transformed our

Back then handsets were the size of a house brick and required a battery pack that looked like a small suitcase. Now a gadget no bigger than a passport can offer more computing power than Nasa had to send a man to the moon and a TV screen too. An estimated 93 per cent of UK adults own a mobile phone and 61 per cent have a smartphone, while six million have signed up to the latest superfast 4G services in what is a multi–billion pound industry. Mobiles have revolutionized the way we work, rest and play. They have also brought new frustrations. What could be worse than sitting on a train near someone gabbling loudly on a hands–free set? Possibly only their neighbour using all that computing power to play Candy Crush Saga at full volume. express.co.uk

Christmas Special

Grand Final With the final result being solely down to the voting public anyone could win. Three dances were to decide who would hold up the glitter ball trophy for 2014. The first dance was judges choice, the second dance was the show dance after which time the lowest voted celebrity would be eliminated then the final 3 celebrities danced their favourite dance of the series. Opening the show were Frankie and Kevin with a Samba to La Bamba. This was much better than the first performance but she was carrying her neck rather too far forward for me. I gave her 9 and the judges 39. Next were Mark and Karen with a Cha Cha Cha to I’m Your Man. Mark has come the furthest in this competition this year and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance but he needed more pressure into the floor from his feet. I awarded him 8 and the judges 35. Next were Caroline and Pasha also with Cha Cha Cha to Can You Feel It. This was personality plus! Her legs and hips were good most of the time just occasionally she had her weight a little too far back. I gave her 9 and the judges 40. Closing the first dance were Simon and Kristina with their Charleston to My Old Man. A dance full of energy, tricks and lifts and with good foot swivel. Top mark of 10 and the judges 39. Showdances were next Frankie and Kevin with a Fred and Ginger style number to Get Happy which was full of energy

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

and style. I gave her 10 and the judges 38. Next Mark and Karen with an upbeat number to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. An exhausting number action packed with the kitchen sink thrown in. I awarded 9 and the judges 35. Caroline and Pasha then performed a contemporary Rumba piece to Angel. Wow Wow Wow!!! this was what I had been waiting for so far ahead of her competition and my winner. A 10 and the judges another 40. Closing the second dance were Simon and Kristina with another upbeat number to A Little Satisfaction a real melee of dance styles but after Caroline’s number paled by comparison. A 10 and the judges 39. At this stage Mark as the lowest placed celebrity was eliminated leaving the other 3 to fight it out with their favourite dances of the series. Frankie her Paso Doble to America, Caroline and Pasha their Charleston to Constantinople and Simon and Kristina their Argentine Tango to Roxanne. With 9, 10, 10 respective and judges 39, 40 and 40 it meant that Caroline was the first celebrity ever to score a perfect score in every dance in the final in any series. Needless to say she did win the competition and well deserved it was too! Well just the Christmas special to go now but in the meantime enjoy your festive season and we look forward to welcoming you back to one of our classes in 2015. Keep Dancing!

There were 6 celebrities from past series who took part in this years Christmas Special. Lisa Reilly, Russel Grant, Lewis Smith, Chris Hollins, Rachel Stevens and Sophie Ellis Bextor. The theme this year was pantomime and all the celebrities were dressed in panto costumes in one form or another. With no public vote for this show, it was down to the judges and the audience to pick the winner. Opening the show were Chris Hollins as Dick Whittington and Iveta with a Charleston. This was a fun performance containing his trade mark move from 2009. It was lacking in foot swivel but not bad after such a long break. I awarded him 8 and the judges 31. 2008 Runner Up Rachel Stevens then took to the floor as Tinkerbell with her partner Tristan as Peter Pan and a Viennese Waltz. This was nicely danced but I found it a bit ‘bumpy’ when moving in and out of hold. Nevertheless she still retained the drive for the dance. I gave her 8 and the judges 38. The public’s favourite from 2011 Russell Grant as the Genie with Joanne and their Cha Cha Cha were next up. With Russell coming in and leaving the dance on a magic carpet what else can be said! Only he could do it! I gave him 7 and the judges 29. Finalist from 2013 Sophie Ellis Bextor as Sleeping Beauty with Aljaz and an American Smooth were next to dance. This was extremely smooth and graceful, with a

good frame and nice lifts. A very elegant performance. I gave her 9 and the judges 39. Another public favourite from 2012 was Semi Finalist Lisa Reilly as Dorothy and Robin as the Tin Man danced a Jive.

This again was a very energetic, fun performance which left Lisa quite breathless towards the end but well done nonetheless. I awarded her 7 and the judges 32. Closing the show was 2012 Champion Lewis Smith as Jack with Aliona his princess and a Quickstep. His frame was still superb, movement smooth throughout and all the quickstep intricacies carried out to perfection. I gave him 10 and the judges a perfect score of 40. With the judges (and my) winner being Lewis, it was all down to the audience to decide and in the end they also agreed with us and voted Lewis Christmas Champion for 2014. Well done Lewis. Well that’s me signing off now until next year but don’t forget that our classes are restarting on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th January. With new classes every 3 weeks and singles always welcome, come and join in our ‘Strictly’ gossip and start off your new year with a bang and that much needed exercise class after all the overindulgence from the festivities! In the meantime Keep Dancing with ‘Strictly’ Dance!

Opening a new business in the current

economic climate here in Spain requires a huge leap of faith, particularly as an expat. We all remember the good times of a few years ago when shops and bars were popping up on every corner and Brits, new to Spain, were exporting the skills they had learned at home, providing a wide range of service industries that were more accessible to non-Spanish speakers; but the recession has bitten hard into this convenience and now, with many of those folk unable to sustain a respectable living returning to Blighty, residents who have hung in here to continue living their dream often find themselves struggling with bureaucracy and the language to go about their daily life. So, if you have a vision of running your own concern – which will most likely be in a service industry of some sort, how do you go about tackling the treacle-laden route to sending out your first flyers and business cards? It may seem obvious but primarily you must offer a genuine skill, something that people either need or will be prepared to treat themselves to. Hard on the heels of that come the intangibles – determination, well-placed optimism, personality, a head for business and of course that magic ingredient luck! The luckfactor is vital; finding the right premises for instance – somewhere you don’t have to invest all of your working capital to get ready, with a helpful landlord who won’t rip you off and build in a crunching rent rise as soon as you have the place up and running; however property owners are often feeling the pinch too and tend to be a bit more practical than a few years ago. As a girl she trained with the legendry ‘Teasy-Weasy’ Raymond, who demanded the highest standards from juniors to established stylists. A few years ago, suddenly finding herself solely responsible for the upbringing of her two sons, she returned to work, quickly establishing herself as one of the most popular stylists in the area. But the dream of her own business was always nagging and the close of 2014 became the time to give it a go.

anything from a superb cut and colour, the smartest nails in town, to a slapped back and tickle whenever you need it.

So, despite the depression of ‘El Crisis’, if you have an inkling of an idea don’t let it die on the vine; take heart from this example – there is plenty of life and opportunity still to be had in sunny Almeria, and Spain’s gradual but determined climb from recession will undoubtedly give birth to a regeneration of Brits providing the goods and services that enhance a life out here.

‘Ɛleɠance’ by Katie, Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez, 634 30 88 77

Time is of the essence in order to start getting a return on your capital outlay and her very efficient Gestora, Isobel Lopéz, found a town hall keen to help new businesses get off the mark. Having found premises, with the help of partner Colin and a few faithful friends, Katie pursued the dream and began turning it into the most attractive salon in town. Whilst frantic decorating and plumbing went on, all of the necessary paperwork fell into place and Katie was open for business within six weeks. Her reputation was enough to bring clients to the door straightaway, but any new venture also needs the encouragement of newspapers such as this, who are happy to offer attractive advertising rates to reach new customers across the area. Katie now has a stunning salon just off Turre high street, with popular nail technician Natalie Jakes visiting two days a week, and Valerie Quinnel providing massage and a variety of health and beauty therapies. Gone, but not Forgotten

Jack Bruce 25 Oct: Bassist Jack Bruce, former member of Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, died at his home in Suffolk, England, at age 71. As the bassist for one of rock’s earliest supergroups, he helped create the tracks “Sunshine of Your Love,” “White Room” and “SWLABR.”

Joan Rivers, 81, Comedian 4 Sept: She will always be known for her biting wit and skewering of celebrity style. But after a widely respected and storied career, launched decades ago with a 1965 appearance on The Tonight Show, she’s also remembered as an incomparable pioneer for women in comedy.

Lauren Bacall 12 Aug: Lauren Bacall, a leading lady of the early era of film, died of a stroke. A frequent co-star of Humphrey Bogart, the film noir actress had starring turns in Dark Passage, Key Largo, The Mirror Has Two Faces, and The Big Sleep. Bacall also appeared on stage and television, logging an honorary Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild statuettes (The Mirror Has Two Faces), the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Emmy nominations, and two Tony Awards (Applause, and Woman of the Year).

Robin Williams 11 Aug: Robin Williams, beloved comedian and actor. With four Oscar nominations (Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King, and Good Will Hunting) and one win (Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting), Williams was one of the most versatile actors of his time and one of the most successful comedians turned actors ever. From undeniably recognizable and quotable voice turns in movies like Aladdin and Happy Feet to dramatic roles in Awakenings and What Dreams May Come to his wacky and instantly memorable roles in films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Hook, Williams’ resume reads like a best-of list and separates him from so many other actors of his generation. Williams was found dead in his home in Tiburon, California. He was 63.

Peaches Geldof 7 April: Peaches Geldof, a socialite and TV presenter. The mother of two was found in her apartment in Kent and was declared dead by an ambulance service shortly thereafter. She was 25.

Mickey Rooney, 93, Actor

James Garner 19 July: James Garner, a veteran of TV and movies. Best known for starring roles in TV series like “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files”, garner was wildly popular and well regarded as having the good looks to match his winning personality. Later in his career he appeared in some higher quality TV movies and took several supporting roles in movies like The Notebook, Space Cowboys, and Maverick. The Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee was 86.

6 April: Mickey Rooney, who crawled onto the Hollywood scene before he was 2 years old. The star of National Velvet and Breakfast at Tiffany’s had a career that spanned nine decades. He was 93. Rooney appeared in many films through his long career, including the Andy Hardy series and The Black Stallion. He had his personal troubles (he was married eight times) but was a dedicated actor until the end. He has a role in the next Night at the Museum movie.

Rik Mayall Bob Hoskins 29 May: Bob Hoskins, an actor best known for his roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Hook, and Super Mario Brothers, died of pneumonia. The Golden Globe and BAFTA winner was 71.

9 June: Rik Mayall, a comedian and actor perhaps best known for playing the title role in the movie Drop Dead Fred, died following a cardiac event. The Emmy Award winner (The Wind in the Willows) was also known for parts in television series like “The Young Ones” and “The New Statesman”. He was 56.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAE L DAVIES , ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com

If you wish to claim the 175,000€ exemption in Andalucia make sure you prove you and the deceased where residents or you will have problems. Q. My husband died a year ago in the UK while on holiday, even though we have both resided in Mojacar for over 20 years. He has left me half of a villa and a bank account (both in Mojacar). The total value of the estate was just over 120,000€, and I paid no tax as my solicitor said that as we where resident in Andalucia I was entitled to 175,000€ tax free. This was all done and dusted and my solicitor gave me all my paperwork over six months ago. I have just received a letter from the Agencia Tributaria in Madrid claiming I owe them just over 13,000€ in inheritance tax plus just over 650€ surcharge plus as small amount of interest. What is all this about? A. In Spain non resident beneficiaries and resident beneficiaries do not pay the same amount of inheritance tax (there is a lot of details to this and the European courts have recently told Spain they must change this, but this would be another article). If you as the beneficiary are resident in Andalucia (and you prove it ) you are entitled to present your inheritance tax self assessment form in Andalucia and in this case your inheritance would be exempt as inheritance received in Andalucia from a husband are exempt if they are worth less than 175,000€. What has happened is that you presented your self assessment form in Andalucia claiming the exemption that you where entitled to as resident. The tax office in Andalucia on looking at your inheritance deed have decided that your self assessment should not have been presented in Andalucia , and instead it should have been presented in Madrid as a non-resident heir. In Madrid as a non-resident heir you were only entitled to 16,000 euro exemption, so they have taxed you on the rest and then applied surcharge and interest for late payment. Why have they done this? Because you did not

provide sufficient indication on the acceptance of inheritance deed of you and your husband being a resident in Andalucia, made worse by the fact that your husband deceased in the UK, which makes them presume unless proved otherwise that you were non-residents. On the deed you should have at least made a manifestation that you and your husband where resident in Andalucia, and you should have incorporated a certificate from the town hall manifesting you are resident in the municipality (plus it never does any harm to provide other proof of residence you may have even though with what we have said it should be sufficient). As your husband deceased in the UK and there are no other documents or manifestations on the deed to prove otherwise they simply consider that you have incorrectly presented the deed to them to enable you to claim the much higher exemption. Solutions: To your case in particular: within the timescale provided on the letter you have received to respond (normally 15 days ) you respond stating that the file needs to be sent back to Andalucia on the basis of you and your husband being residents, providing as much evidence as possible. These situations can become very difficult to unravel and almost important is a reply is not provided within the timescale. To other readers: A. When accepting an inheritance: Do not assume that the inheritance tax office in Andalucia will assume you are resident in Andalucia when you claim the 175,000€ exemption. You need to make sure you prove this is the case and it is much easier done when the deed of acceptance is signed than later on when they challenge the situation. B. During your lifetime : Always make sure that you have thing in place to enable the spouse to prove residency. The most important thing is to be on the Padrón at all times and not let it lapse.

In the spirit of new beginnings, HGTV has consulted the experts and come up with some resolutions that will make your home a more beautiful, efficient, clean and green place in the coming year. Here are our five picks for the best home improvement resolutions for the new year and how to achieve them:

1. Streamline the stuff One of the best and least expensive ways to feel better about your home is to clear it of clutter. Each year most of us acquire a mountain of stuff. Without some regular purging, cabinets and drawers get jam-packed Quality English Bed and it becomes hard to find the things you use and enjoy the most. 2. Make it safe and sound Your home may be beautiful, but is it safe? There are a few things that every homeowner should do to ensure that they’re not living with a potential health hazard or fire risk. First, check your house for radon. This colorless, odorless gas causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year from the radioactive particles it traps in your lungs as you breathe, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. One in every fifteen homes has elevated levels. And with test kits costing as little as $20 at your local hardware store, there’s no reason not to get right on that. While we’re on the subject of deadly gas, make sure you install a carbon monoxide detector on every bedroom floor in addition to fire detectors. If a chimney flue or furnace vent gets blocked or leaks, carbon monoxide could back up in your house and kill you. Make sure your house can breathe. Hickory Hills, Ill. home inspector Jack McGraw is always surprised at how many people’s bathrooms and attics aren’t vented to the outside (or the vents are covered over with shingles.) This makes you a prime candidate for mold. 3. Shrink your bills (and your carbon footprint in the process) When people think of going green, they often think it takes solar panels or a hybrid car to make a difference. Not so, says Bob Schildgen, who writes the “Hey Mr. Green” column for Sierra magazine. It just takes a little old-fashioned common sense. The best place to start is by cutting your energy usage in your home: • Remember your mom’s advice and switch off the lights when you leave a room. • Turn off your air conditioner when you leave the house and dial your heater down to 55 degrees at night. • Install compact fluorescent bulbs and low-flow showerheads. • Try drying some of your clothes on the line and wait for the dishwasher or washing machine to be full before you run them. • Turn off your power strips and/or set your home computer to revert to sleep mode when not in use. • Water your yard less. Put in drought-tolerant landscaping if necessary.

British, top property buyers in Spain

Despite the economic crisis, foreign buyers have returned in force to the country’s property market. Britons dominate foreign purchase of Spanish property, according to official statistics, representing the 18.06 per cent of property selling to nonnationals. But with low prices in many areas, more nations are getting in on the act, with the French (10.48 per cent), and Northern Europeans: Russians (7.50 per cent), German (6.45 per cent), Belgian (6.19 per cent) and Swedish (6.08 per cent).

House Building Permits Rose by 6.7% to October

The number of assets acquired by non-European has also been on the rise in recent years, with Chinese (3.95 per cent), Moroccan (2.34 per cent) and Algerian buyers (1.96 per cent) increasing the most. Property asking prices have generally risen by 7 per cent across the country, according to real estate experts. Secondhome demand is now close to record highs, and almost 40 per cent above the boom-time high. The only time this demand was higher was in the fourth quarter of 2012, when tax changes artificially boosted sales by bringing them forward from first quarter of 2013. Foreign resident demand has collapsed since the boom turned to bust and many economic migrants who came to work on building sites have gone home. In the last two years, however, the demand for property by foreigners has been steadily increasing, with many Europeans choosing to move to Spain, for its climate and lifestyle. The highest number of home sales per 100,000 residents was in Valencia followed by the Canary Islands and the Balearics. In relative terms, the regions where home sales increased most the year upon year were Madrid (with a rise of 30.4 per cent), Extremadura (up 25.7 per cent) and Navarra (up 19.3 per cent).

The number of applications for building permits to construct new housing in Spain surged by 6.7% in the first ten months of the year, compared with the same period of 2013, one percentage point more than in September, to stand at a total of 30,858 applications, according to the Ministry of Development’s data. In the month of October alone, a total of 3,265 building licences were requested for the construction of new homes, which represented an increase of 15.6% compared with the same month of last year. If the current pace of applications is maintained, then the number of building licences for new homes could reach nearly 37,500 applications by the close of the year, exceeding the figures for 2013 (34,288 licences), although still below the figures for 2012 (44,162 licences).

The figures come as a new report indicated that foreign demand for second homes on the Costa del Sol has been strong this year. Overseas buyers regard property in the area as a bargain, according to the report from real estate consultancy Aguirre Newman. It also reveals that 90 per cent of foreign buyers can afford to buy without backup financing while local demand is hampered by lack of mortgage choice. Mallorca’s Port D’Andratx On List of World’s Most Exclusive Residential Areas

According to a recent ranking prepared by luxury real estate agents, Engel & Völkers, taking into account the most expensive property transactions carried out worldwide in recent months and also data from various market analyses, Port D’Andratx inMallorca is one of the 25 most exclusive residential areas in the world, with a price tag per square metre reaching 27,000 euros. The prestigious Mallorcan port ranks at number 19, and is the only Spanish destination included in this list. The Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, in the heart of the French Riviera, heads the list, followed by places such as Hong Kong, East Hampton, London and New York. The report noted that a villa in the Avenue Claude Vignon in Saint-JeanCap-Ferrat achieved a sale price close to 120 million euros, which translates to a price of 200,000 euros per square metre, and is the most expensive transaction registered by Engel & Völkers. Hong Kong ranks second on the list after the sale price of attics in the prestigious ‘Twelve Peaks’ building development, in the exclusive Peak area of Hong Kong Island, reached 82.3 million euros, which is equivalent to 190,000 euros per square metre of living space. East Hampton, at the eastern end of Long Island, in New York, stands in third place in the ranking, where a

property with a private lake in Further Lane sold for almost 118 million euros, representing a price per square metre of 168,600 euros. In London, which appears in fourth place on the ranking of the world’s most exclusive residential areas, the price per square metre for a two-story penthouse located in the complex known as ‘One Hyde Park’ in Knightsbridge, is more than 150,000 euros. El Mundo reported that some of the other European destinations appearing on the ranking of the top 25 residential areas include: Monaco; Sardinia; Cannes; Gstaad; Geneva; Paris; Saint Moritz; Zurich and Vienna. Moscow’s central prime residential district of Kropotkinskaya, close to the Kremlin, is situated at number 12 in the ranking, with the highest price per square metre being paid for a property in the residential street of Butikovskiy Perelouk at around 44,500 euros. Asian destinations on the ranking are Singapore and Tokyo, in 13th and 14thpositions, respectively. In Singapore the price per square metre for a home in a prime residential high-rise building reached 44,000 euros, while in the Japanese capital the price paid per square metre for an outstanding apartment in the most expensive residential district of the city, MinamiAzabu, was 41,000 euros. Christian Völkers explained that: “the

residential property markets in the locations surveyed by Engel & Völkers are barely dependent on the economic situation of individual national economies, as the international demand in the premium market segment is very high. More and more people, especially newly affluent buyers from Eastern Europe, Asia and South America, are looking for international luxury properties around the world as a secure capital investment”. 5 Low-tech ways to keep your house warm this winter

There’s growing concern about price rises from energy companies. Here are cheap ways to save money when heating your house. Householders are regularly being advised to install double glazing, thorough insulation and overhaul their inefficient heating system. But apart from those often expensive tactics, what can be done cheaply and quickly to keep your house warm? 1. Use tin foil. One way to prevent unnecessary heat loss from radiators, particularly on those attached to external walls, is to use heat reflective aluminium foil behind the radiator. This prevents heat disappearing through the wall by reflecting it back into the room, says Sophie Neuburg, energy campaigner for charity Friends of the Earth. Foil specially designed for the purpose can be bought cheaply. “You can even use good quality kitchen foil,” says Carl Brennand, assistant manager of website Moneymagpie, although it’s generally not as effective.

2. Thick curtains are one of the main ways to protect your house from losing heat through the windows. Curtains with a thermal lining are a relatively cheap option, says Brennand. “The thicker the better,” adds Archna Luthra, consumer analyst at moneysavingexpert. com. If you don’t want to splash out on new curtains you can line them yourself with materials like cheap fleece, says Brennand. “You can even use PVC shower curtains,” he suggests. And it’s not just windows that can have curtains. Placing a curtain in front of doors to the outside adds another layer of protection. And it doesn’t even need to be a curtain. “My gran used to have an old rug that she used to pin up over the back of the front door,” says interior designer Claire Potter. Sunlight through net curtains 3. But let the sunlight in during the day. It’s important to try to use as much natural - and free - heat (in the form of sunlight) as possible. Window shades and curtains should be kept open during the day, advise Age UK. Closing your curtains as soon as dusk falls will maximise your house’s potential to retain that heat. 4. Double glazing is heat-efficient but it’s relatively costly. If you can’t afford it, why not fake it? “There’s a special film that you can put across [single-glazed] windows” that can imitate the same effect, albeit to a lesser degree, says Neuburg. You can attach the film to the window frame using double-sided tape and then fix it using a hairdryer, she says. There’s a downside. You won’t be able to open your windows without breaking the seal. Alternatively, self-adhesive foam strips can help seal any gaps in the edges of windows. Metal or

plastic strips with brushes or wipers attached cost a bit more but will last longer as a result, according to the Energy Saving Trust. These can also be used as draught excluders around the hinges and frames of doors. Smoking chimneys

5. Stop heat being lost up the chimney. It’s now fairly common to have fireplaces that are merely decorative. If you’re not using yours then you should consider a chimney balloon, says Potter. “There’s an amazing amount of heat that can be lost through an open fireplace,” she says. A chimney balloon, made from a special laminate, can be bought for about £20 and works by being placed inside the chimney hole, just out of sight. It’s then inflated until it completely shuts out any incoming cold air or escaping heat. Just be sure not to start a fire without removing it. There are also woollen chimney insulators on the market. But again, make sure you remove them before starting any fires.

Book review Precinct Murder. An anthology of Short Stories by local writers

“We both saw it happen. It was like time stood still out in the street. For a brief second, which seemed like an hour, everything fell silent. Nothing moved. everything was dead.” The Fall Guy by Warren Kent opens dramatically with a naked man falling from the 5th floor of a hotel in New York to his death, watched by two off-duty officers enjoying an appetising Mexican meal and looking forward to a relaxing weekend. Change of plan. Mayhem. Cars piled up. Children screaming: “Within moments, blood had mixed with water to form a red river traversing the tarmac.” Atmospheric. Meet the two detectives: Steve Byrne and his partner, Jesse Andrews. Homicide? The victim had checked into this particular hotel every Friday afternoon under the name of Jones and was joined by a woman which lead the detectives into assuming that he was conducting a clandestine affair without his wife’s knowledge. Intriguingly, there was some evidence that the hotel was being used as a brothel by others. Room 514 had been the victim’s room. On searching, Byrne couldn’t find a suicide note, although a credit card showed the name of Joe Chisoro. Further investigation determined that Joe had employed Paul Mason as his therapist to quit smoking. Why had Joe phoned his wife every Friday afternoon for the past 3 months BUT failed to contact her the afternoon just before he died? Did he jump? Was he pushed? What really happened? That’s what Byrne and Andrews must solve. “Blue had been our colour, blue furniture, blue walls, a blue car. He shouldn’t have bought her a blue scarf.” A Hint of Blue by Maggie Chapman focuses on a desolate location frequented by drug addicts, hanging out in back alleys with bodies found frequently. Death was usually drug-related. A 17 year old discovered the body on the way to work. The victim was Alison Blake who had been strangled with a curtain cord

whilst she was wearing a blue scarf. She was wellliked so it seemed odd that someone would want to kill her. Detectives Michael Cicerello and his partner, Katy O’Neil interview her boss Lavine, Rick, her ex and Dan her current boyfriend who she had been dating for just over a year. “The law of averages says that it was someone she knew.” Who was it and what was the motive? Jealousy? “Anyone could have killed her, she was easy to pick up.” Another prostitute perhaps? Mistaken Identities by Gerald R Wright begins with another murder, but a brutal one this time. The victim is barely recognisable, his injuries are so severe: a fractured skull, his left eyeball had been driven back into the cavity below the brain, with many broken bones and ruptured internal organs. He is described as a life-sized rag doll. Detectives Tex Nelson and Rico Morales discover the man to be ex-boxer Jackson Pike, known as Jacko. Did he double cross someone or was he perhaps playing around with someone’s wife? Or is there more to it than this? Is there a connection between Pike and a thug of an ex-con, Peter Richards, convicted 17 years previously but discharged 2 years ago. Vicious, extremely dangerous, racist. “Was it accidental death, suicide or murder? The daughter or the wicked stepmother? Courting Justice by K.J.Rollinson begins with a suspicious death. The victim is Ken Marshall who had been seriously ill with hepatitis C and his liver was failing. He had been scheduled to have a liver transplant but had refused the operation because he wanted to die. He died from asphyxia following an anaphylaxis shock after being given penicillin which created an allergic reaction. Could Marshall have taken his own life because he was depressed? The poor devil choked to death whilst his wife, Francesca Marshall, better known as the alluring black widow, oozing sex appeal, slept on. His daughter, Cheryl

pause for thought Well that’s it. Christmas is over, as is New Year and even Three Kings! It’s now 2015 and we’re all that much older, but I’ll wish all a very happy and prosperous year anyway! And for us in the Church of England living out here in Spain, and especially those of us in the Almanzora Valley, it promises to be a particularly exciting and challenging year. How? Well, over the years, I’ve received quite a lot of comment about the distance I and a number of others from this area, travel to get to Church in Mojacar each week. Many acknowledge that it’s the distance that prevents them from going, stating that if there were an Anglican Church with weekly Sunday Services closer to hand, then they would gladly attend. Well, if that describes your feelings, I can only say that I have some Good News and some Bad News for you. But first, as they say, the Good News; which is that as from Sunday 11th January, there will be regular Church of England Services each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church at Llanos del Peral (just up from La Vida) and furthermore we also plan to start weekly Sunday Services at 6.0 p.m. at Aljambra Chapel from February. The Bad News of course is that for anyone living in the Almanzora Valley, Bang goes your excuse for not getting to Church! But it’s amazing just how shallow our commitment to our faith can be and how easily we can be deterred from joining with others to worship the God we claim to serve. How much we Christians have to learn from other faiths where commitment is so absolute. And so I would hope that at this start of a New Year, all we who claim to serve Christ as our Saviour, calling ourselves Christians, will, wherever we may live, determine to examine the excuses we make and undertake to meet together at least once per month, in whatever church we feel most comfortable, to join in worshiping Him. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard; for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

Coates demanded a blood test because she accused her step-mother of deliberately killing him. We do know that there was conflict over his will and anger on Cheryl’s behalf that Francesca would inherit 50%. She had argued with her father before his death and asked for a loan of money which he had refused. We have a conviction, a denial but the outcome isn’t convincing. 30 years seems like an unfair sentence with insufficient evidence. And there’s more. My only problem with the short story genre is that the crimes are too easy to solve and the stories lack tension and suspense and you don’t need to be a detective to work that one out! But readable and worth a try. Publisher: Word Play Publishing. ISBN: 1493727728 and 14-93727729.

wednesday supper Liver & onions with mashed potatoes 5.50€

Method

Peel and slice the onion. Melt the dripping or butter in a large, deep saucepan and add the sliced onions. Let them cook for 15 minutes or so with a regular stir, until they are soft and sweet. Chop the cooked potatoes into small pieces and add to the onions with the chopped thyme leaves. As soon as the potatoes are warmed through, pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season, lower the heat to an enthusiastic simmer and leave, partially covered with a lid, for 25 minutes or so. Chop the cooked greens and stir them into the soup. Don’t worry if they still have some butter clinging to them. Continue to simmer for 15 minutes. Ladle two-thirds of the soup into a food processor and blend until smooth. Return the blended soup to the pan containing the remaining unblended soup. Add the cream and a grating of nutmeg and bring to the boil, then stir and pour into warm bowls. Bread isn’t necessary here but might be welcome if you aren’t having it with a sandwich. bbc.co.uk/food

Bubble and Squeak as seen here in this Bubble and Squeak recipe is the name for fried left-over vegetables from Sunday Lunch. Traditionally it would be eaten on a Monday for lunch or dinner with a fried egg, bacon, or meat leftovers. There is no specific recipe it is simply a way of using up whatever you have left from dinner. One main component is mashed potatoes which is the glue holding all the other vegetables together and often, but not always cabbage. Bubble and Squeak is also known as Bubble or Fry. In Ireland Colcannon is made from mashed potatoes, cabbage or Kale and onion and similar to Bubble and Squeak as is Rumbledethumps in Scotland.

visit Alhambra palace

A palace and fortress complex located in Granada. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in 889 and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-11th century by the Moorish emir Mohammed ben AlAhmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current palace and walls. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. Alhambra’s Islamic palaces, as we know them today, were built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain and the court of the Nasrid dynasty. After the conquest of Granada by the Reyes Católicos (“Catholic Monarchs”) in 1492, some portions were used by Christian rulers.

The Palace of Charles V, built by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in 1527, was inserted in the Alhambra within the Nasrid fortifications. After being allowed to fall into disrepair for centuries, the buildings being occupied by squatters, Alhambra was rediscovered in the 19th century by European scholars and travelers, with restorations commencing. It is now one of Spain’s major tourist attractions, exhibiting the country’s most significant and well known Islamic architecture, together with 16th-century and later Christian building and garden interventions. Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration for many songs and stories.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I have just had a self confessed computer-phobe come a very long way just to tell me that he loves the way I write my articles and just wanted to thank me for making computers seem a little less frightening. He told me you tell everyone that he is a ‘computer moron’. In reply I have to say that I have not yet met anyone that fits that description and this gentleman certainly doesn’t! So, now my ego is at full bloat, and so is the fear of not being able to keep up this level. Bearing all this in mind, here goes the article for today. Many of you may have come across the need to have someone fix your computer, and you can guarantee that the shop it shut or the person who can fix it is miles

away, we call this ‘Sod’s Law’ :-) Who on earth can you get someone to fix it? Well, most of us will have come across someone will take over you computer, usually from India by someone who’s English is only marginally better than of the house pet, and repair from there. There are free (did I say “Free” again – tut, tut!) programs that will allow you get someone knowledgeable to take over your computer and repair it! How do these work? It relies on a complex system of data exchange between computers and each program has its own systems which is much more information than most of us need. What we need to know is which program to use. The standard has been set by a program called ‘Teamviewer’ which is free providing you are helping a friend and not in business. There are 2 versions for Windows. The first is the main control

viewpoint La Gatita

The festive season became the vermin season as giant rats roamed Alqueria. Mutated by Remitroot residue and pollution from the Río Verde these huge rodents roamed the Pueblo unchallenged. A rat dressed as Father Christmas stole every gift in the Village telling the startled children it was new north-pole policy due to ‘La Crisis’. On another occasion two rats walked into the kitchen of the Bar La Casa Devante, rat number one said, “Look at all that food”. Rat number two replied “Ruddy hell a talking rat” and bolted for the safety of the Plaza. But the Elders of Alqueria had a plan. They were to purposely mutate a cat which would then be set loose on the Village’s giant rat population. It would hopefully drive them into another town, transferring both the rodents and the problem of their eradication. What could go wrong? Fluffy was a half Siamese half European cat. Its day consisted of eating, sleeping and sitting on someone’s lap being fondled. An idyllic existence thought Manuela as she fed the feline Remitroot mash. The cat grew in size and ferocity. Cats of standard size scattered before it as the creature consumed alarming quantities of Remitroot products. So much in fact that it forced the commodity price sky high on the black market. Fluffy used to sleep in the town hall but his purring had started to loosen the

stonework. He now slumbered among the fragrant orange trees waiting for the day he would be released among the Town’s unsuspecting vermin. When the day arrived Fluffy went to work with gusto, intent on supplementing his Remitroot diet with a morsel or two of juicy rodent flesh. The rats, taking one look at the huge Fluffy departed Alqueria taking with them whatever booty they could carry. The plan had worked well, worked quickly and caused no harm to the environment. An ideal solution with only one drawback. What do you do with a four metre cross Siamese cat that is now surplus to requirements? Its daily consumption of Remitroot in all its various forms was ruining the economy of the Village. There were more practical problems as well. A four metre cat licking its genitals in public was quite disturbing for the more innocent of the Town’s population. Children would ask, “Why’s Fluffy doing that Mum?”, “Because it can” was the usual embarrassed reply. The Elders of Alqueria once more came to the fore with an ingenious plan which nobody else could have possibly thought of. They would breed a giant dog. This of course came as a complete surprise to all and only went to demonstrate the lateral thinking of which the leaders of Alqueria are capable. What could go wrong?

panel and is surprisingly very easy to use. The second part is a ‘stand-alone’ program that doesn’t have to be installed and will just run. You are given 2 numbers, the first is a personal number, of 9 digits, that won’t change and the second number, of 4 digits, that will change every time the program is started – good security as there are 0000 to 9999 (10,000) possible combinations. It is incredibly easy to use providing that you close all the other programs, as it sometimes hides! The downside is the cost for a business version gets dangerously expensive, very quickly! Having said that, it is easy to use and good! There are completely free program that is available is called ‘TightVNC’. Setting it up required a number of options that I had to think about. This isn’t good for someone who just wants to have someone fix their computer. I found it a little confusing when picking the right part of the program to start the connection. When I tried it on a local network it said that the connection was actively refused. This program was

uninstalled immediately! The next was ‘Ammyy’ which claims to be ‘Zero-Config Remote Desktop Software Ammyy Admin. The easiest way to establish remote desktop connection’. For once I am happy to say that it is very nearly true! As a test I ran the program on both my desktop and laptop. Both wanted a number that had been generated on the other machine. I type the number from my laptop into the input box on the program running on my desktop and immediately got message on my laptop asking if I would allow the connection. Having agreed, I was able to take over the laptop from my desktop use it as though I were typing into it. The addresses to get and try these programs are: http://www.teamviewer.com/ and http://www.ammyy.com/en/ Have a good week until next week.

New Year Resolution

My attention was caught by an item on the news about a young man named Luke Cameron, whose New Year Resolution for 2014 was to do a good deed every day. In my personal world I have been on the receiving end of numerous good deeds: The unfailingly helpful assistants in the Farmacia; those savvy people who know where things are in supermarkets, the tall gentlemen who reach things for me from high shelves in those same supermarkets, or lift heavy water bottles for me; the motorists who stop and let me cross, even if I’m nowhere near a crossing; petrol pump assistants who round the sum owed down, not up, and so, so many others. Believe me, I notice you, and I appreciate you. Give yourselves a pat on the back, all of you. It set me thinking about good deeds in general, and I came to the conclusion that we are daily surrounded by good deeds – in fact there are so many of them that it is easy to become i n u r e d to them, completely unaware of them. josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk I’m not

referring to great big extravagant actions, like paying for a whole village to go on holiday, or standing in the middle of Albox handing out 100€ notes to complete strangers – surely the first would attract the attention of burglars, while the latter would definitely attract the interest of the officers of the Law. I am thinking instead about the everyday. For instance, how irritating is it to get up in the morning, go blearyeyed to make the cup of coffee that will bring the world into focus, only to discover that there isn’t any! It fair ruins your morning, doesn’t it? However, do we ever stop to appreciate how nice to is to get up, etc, etc, make the coffee, then take the cup and sit down in an inert lump in front of the telly while the magic beans gradually bring conscious life back into all the outlying areas of your body? That is a passive sort of example – if the coffee had jumped out of the cupboard and made itself, then that would qualify it as a deed; the point is that we do take a comfortable norm for granted. We take smiles, good mornings, thank yous and pleases for granted, and so often we expect the whole world to dance to our tune. So my New Year Resolution is to notice good deeds – the smiles, the thank yous, the waves – how much nicer they make everybody’s world!

THE FTG PLAY AT THE 19TH HOLE

The first meeting of the new year, on Friday 2nd January, saw the ‘Friday Tapas Group’ go the ‘19th Hole’ Tapas Bar in the Urbanisation of Roquetas De Mar. The bar is officially known as PASEO DEL GOLF TAPAS BAR, and the tapas dishes served up were excellent. A good number of members turned up for the new season, which included four new

members joining the merry band. On the day two large groups arrived similtaneously, so it was very busy, as can be seen in the photograph. The group meet in the Urb at 1pm every Friday, at different venues each week. The FTG weekly notice can be seen in the Sol Times, giving venues and dates of future meetings

Sky Sports have retained the UK broadcast rights to the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup for the next four seasons. The new deal, which runs until 2018, has been negotiated with B4 Capital, the agency hired to sell Spanish domestic soccer rights on an international basis. “We are pleased to announce a deal with Sky for these prestigious events in the Spanish football calendar,” said Emanuele Villari, B4 Capital’s head of

sales and acquisition for Europe. “These matches are of great importance reflected by last season’s huge UK viewing figures for the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona and the Super Cup finals between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.” Sky Sports is the current UK broadcaster of all Spanish domestic soccer. However, it has yet to secure the rights to La Liga beyond the end of this season. Speculation last year suggested that BT Sport might make a play for the next available rights package. sportspromedia.com
