Fired Telepizza worker's boyfriend sets light to 15 delivery mopeds
A 32-YEAR-OLD man set fire to 15 TelePizza delivery mopeds worth €30,000 as revenge after his girlfriend lost her job there. Emergency services were called out in the early hours of the morning to the moped park at the branch of the fast-food chain in San Vicente del Raspeig, about 10 kilometres north of Alicante city. They had to evacuate the block where the pizza restaurant is based. An analysis of the fire damage after it was extinguished showed it was almost certainly intentional, and police and firefighters interviewed
Charge for British to enter Spain in new EU plan
Interior ministers of the EU will meet tomorrow to discuss the bureaucratic plan. To make non EU-residents pay the current rate of £4.30 and give their details online before entering any of the 26 Schengen states. BRITISH people will be forced to pay €5 to enter Spain under new EU proposals. Interior ministers of the EU will meet tomorrow to discuss the bureaucratic plan to make non EU-residents pay the current rate of £4.30 and give their details online before entering any of the 26 Schengen states. This would include both those living in Gibraltar and in the UK, thanks to the Brexit vote. British EU diplomat Sir Julian King has defended the move, which he believes will strengthen security measures against terrorism following the attacks in Belgium and France. According to the European Commission, the Etias scheme would apply to non-EU

residents aged over 18. Once they have signed up, they will be able to make multiple trips over a five year period. EU Security Commissioner Sir King, talking to the Press Association, said: “We think this is going to be a valuable additional piece of the jigsaw. “It will allow us to know more about the people who are planning to come to the EU in advance so that if necessary they raise questions about either security or in some cases migration. “We’ll be able to intervene even before they arrive in some cases.” In tomorrow’s meeting, Amber Rudd, the British interior minister for the EU will consider the plan together with a packet of proposals to fight against terrorism. Rudd caused controversy in EU circles in October when she defended the possibility of a visa for foreign workers coming to the UK. expatica.comn

numerous witnesses. This led to the culprit's being taken in for questioning, and several 'contradictions' in his statement gave police enough evidence to charge him. His girlfriend had lost her job at the same TelePizza branch just days before, although it is not known if she was made redundant, if she had a temporary contract which was not renewed, or if she was sacked and what the reasons for this may have been. http://www.thinkspain.com
STAGE DOOR
This is the first of what I hope will become a regular item from the Indalo Players and I would like to begin with a very brief history of the Cine Teatro Regio, Vera. Having lived in this area for nearly ten years it was only recently that I discovered the Cine Teatro Regio To say that I discovered it is not quite true because, along with other members of the Indalo Players, we were looking for somewhere for us to perform as we had lost our old home in the Kimrick. Paul Woolliscroft, one of our founder members, introduced us to officers of Vera Ayuntimiento and they very kindly showed us around the Cine Teatro Regio. To say that we were amazed would be a gross understatement. It was built as a multiuse venue with a large stage for live productions and a roll down cinema screen. With 285 sumptuous seats this gorgeous Teatro is situated in the middle of a triangle formed by Plaza
Del Hospital at the top with Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor at each end of the base formed by Calle Mayor. To reach the Teatro, simply travel along Calle Mayor from either Plaza Del Sol or Plaza Mayor until you come to the Goyra Art shop. Turn into Calle La Luna alongside the shop and a few metres later the Teatro is facing you on the corner of Calle Radio Nacional. It really is that simple. Parking in the immediate area is a little restricted but there are plenty of spaces within easy walking distance nearby. Cine Teatro Regio has very good disabled access and, because the seats are staggered wheel chairs can be parked on the end of a row so that the person occupying the wheelchair is included in the audience instead of being set apart. During 2002 it underwent quite a major refurbishment and was reopened by D. Felix Lopez Caparros.

New App Helps ColoUr-blind Users Better Distinguish Colors
A new app from Microsoft could help colour-blind users get visual clarity. Being colour blind affects 1 in 12 men in the world and 1 in 200 women. More often than not, the entire colour spectrum isn’t affected, but sufferers struggle with identifying shades of red and green. The Color Binoculars app uses your iPhone’s camera, and enhances reds and greens to make them more obvious. Creator Tom Overton said the app came out of fulfilling a personal need as well. “Anything with red or green messes me up,” said Tom Overton, who developed the app. “It’s not so

Britons to be banned from holidays in Spain over fake sickness claims
A RISE in sickness claims is leading hotels in Spain to consider banning Brits. There has been a shocking rise in holidaymakers making fake claims of suffering from vomiting and diarrhea abroad. A growing number of hotels in the Costa del Sol, Valencia, Costa Blanca and Benidorm have now warned they could be banned from staying there. It could cost Spain up to €60 million. Nuria Montes, from Spain’s hoteliers association HOSBEC, said: “The number of claims has increased significantly since the start of this year, when the ‘claims farm’ started their campaign to attract British tourists coming through tour operators. “This is not happening only in Spain, similar situations are being produced in other European destinations such as Greece and Cyprus, and also in the Caribbean. “We estimate that during 2016 the number of claims may be around 10,000, reflecting a very significant increase compared to previous years. “We have estimated that the
economic impact on the Spanish hotel industry will be around €60million, in case the hotel industry has to bear the full cost.” It will see the cost of holidays increase, leaving airlines and tour operators unimpressed. Richard Conroy, founder of travel illness company SickHoliday.com, worries the fake cash-grabs will undermine legitimate investigations, where real holiday sickness can lead to long-term disease. He said: “Fraudulent holiday sickness claims are on the rise — we turn down four or five cases we feel are bogus each week ourselves. “The only thing this trend is going to do is push up the cost of holidays by roughly 10% while punishing those who have genuine grievances with tour operators. “We estimate there are around 25,000 fraudulent claims for holiday sickness per year. “Criminal charges need to be brought. Until that happens, we all suffer.” http://www.expatica.com

Spanish police arrest Moroccan ISIS 'recruiters'
Spanish police arrested two M o r o c c a n s suspected of forming part of the Islamic State (ISIS) group's propaganda and recruitment network. The two were detained in Madrid and Roda de Ter in the northeastern region of Catalonia, and the interior ministry said they had joined the group voluntarily "and acted as individual terrorist cells, decentralised and preactivated for the commission of terrorist acts in Spain." They were "focused on recruiting young Muslims with the ultimate aim of forming an 'army of followers' invisible to police control," it added. A police spokesman, however, was not able to say whether they had actually recruited anyone. They also "did work of propaganda and extolling of Daesh's military victories and gains, all of which was presented in an attractive visual format to gain the largest possible amount of followers," the ministry said, using an Arabic acronym for IS. According to police, they were quickly radicalised, to the point that "they offered themselves up to Daesh as 'martyrs', completely
available to act at any time, place and in any situation." Police in Spain have long focused on prevention -- including nipping propaganda in the bud -- in its strategy to fight jihadism, with the adoption in 2015 of a law allowing authorities to detain people who merely consult jihadist websites. According to the ministry, 163 alleged jihadists have been detained since 2015, when Spain increased its terror alert to four out of five. But unlike France or Belgium, the country is less exposed to the return of nationals who went to fight abroad and plan to commit extremist acts on home soil. Only around 200 Spaniards are estimated to have gone abroad to fight, compared to thousands from nearby France and Belgium. thelocal

Historians find 55 bodies of missing Civil War victims in Mallorca cemetery
BODIES of 55 Spaniards murdered during the Civil War have been found in a Mallorca cemetery, and authorities are now attempting to identify them. This is just phase one of the exhumation programme at the graveyard in Porreres, says the team led by Francisco Etxeberria and Lourdes Herrasti, from the Basque Country-based science association Aranzadi. They will now arrange for forensics to take the skeletons and find out whom they belong to. Next, within six months of their identification, surviving family members – who will, most likely, be children or grandchildren, or other thirdgeneration ascendants – will be notified, so they can give them a proper funeral with marked headstones. If any of them cannot be identified, they will still get a proper funeral in the same cemetery, but without being named. The Mallorca Memory Association has been given a €95,000 grant from the regional government to find missing bodies of Civil War victims. In total, €200,000 has been set aside by the government of the Balearics to search all over the islands. thinkspain
The UK is not coming apart at the seams over Europe
Alastair Stewart / Freelance Writer / editor@darrow.org.uk Last week, The Independent reported that David Cameron’s Government had agreed with a House of Lords committee finding that referendums “cannot be legally binding in the UK, and are therefore advisory.” The rediscovery is a deeply embarrassing one for Theresa May because it gives a hint of the direction her predecessor’s government would have taken if it had lost the Scottish independence referendum in 2014. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is doing just that, declaring at the SNP’s party conference last week that she intends to push ahead with plans for a second independence referendum. Sturgeon cited as her reason the descent into a ‘hard’ Brexit – the removal of the UK from the EU single market, immigration kerbs and support for the Great Repeal Bill (the incorporation of existing EU law into British law) – as an unfavourable and undemocratic outcome for Scotland. She has a point. 62 percent of Scots voted to Remain compared to the 52 percent in England who opted to Leave. Despite this, there has been scant evidence of any increased support for independence in the aftermath of the EU vote. A YouGov poll of more than 1,000 Scots found that 46 percent of respondents would vote for Scottish independence, while 54 percent wanted to remain in the UK (a change of 1 percent in favour of independence since the original result of 45 percent Yes and 55 percent No). So is the Union, as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson himself pondered, at risk from Brexit? Firstly, posturing from all sides is bluster given that Article 50 hasn’t even been triggered yet. Secondly, there is no popular appetite for a second Scottish referendum beyond SNP supporters and no legal basis for it anyway. Only Westminster has the power to legislate on domestic referenda, and if Sturgeon proceeded
with an unofficial one it would be nonbinding as happened with the 2014 Catalonia self-determination vote. Thirdly, Sturgeon representing Scotland unilaterally in international relations is a clear violation of the 1998 Scotland Act which guarantees devolved areas like health and education to Scotland and reserves areas like foreign policy to the UK Government. If Sturgeon doesn’t have the legal legitimacy to represent Scotland or to hold another referendum then her actions those of a paternalist who thinks she knows better. Announcing that her government is setting up a ‘Scottish Office’ in Berlin to promote trade is treading the thin line between promoting Scotland and negotiating foreign affairs. Nevertheless, the UK Government needs to be careful it does not become strident and needlessly antagonise nationalists. Scotland Secretary David Mundell and his Northern Irish and Welsh counterparts have already been told they will be asked only to attend meetings of the European Union Exit and Trade Committee “as required”, fuelling the ire of the Scottish Government that they are being excluded from negotiations. Brexit storms on. While the Prime Minister has conceded that Parliament will get a vote on whatever postArticle 50 deal she secures for the UK, it won’t get a vote on whether to leave the EU itself. This will inevitably aid the SNP’s position, and in this case quite rightly. As Harold Macmillan once said, the union between Scotland and England is of the wedding band, not of handcuff. All parties should remember this in the months and years ahead.

historic albox
Albox owes its foundation and settlement to the Arabs (its name means ‘tower’ in Arabic) with a history widely linked to the medieval splendour of the Kingdom of Granada from the 13th century. In the midst of the Christian Reconquest, in the 15th century, Albox was taken from the Arabs by the troops of the Military Governor of the Kingdom of Murcia (Crown of Castilla), Alonso Yáñez Fajardo, and later incorporated into his title holdings as Marquess of los Vélez.

Calle Malaga, ALBOX (two streets up from Mercadona)
Antonio - with an irregular layout of steep streets converging on a small central square was the original nucleus of the town of Albox, it is however in la Loma de San Francisco - named after an ancient settlement of the Franciscan Third Order - that most expansion and development took place in the 17th and 18th centuries. This is due to the connection of Albox with tragic floods and earthquakes which have plagued this area periodically. The most momentous event for Albox occurred in 1716 when the venerated image of Nuestra Senora del Saliente came to the town and two priests from Albox founded the Santuario on Mt. Roel. From this date the history of Albox cannot be understood without the deep imprint of this Marian devotion. During the 19th century the town played a major role in the fight against French invaders, with records showing two bloody skirmishes in the years 1810 and 1811. This was the period of greatest economic boom in Albox, thanks to its looms and craft pottery works. Its commercial tradition has made it an economic hub between Baza (Granada) and Lorca(Murcia)

This can also occur with other activities involving intense concentration and focus such as reading, driving, or even sewing.
You’ve had eye surgery Almost all people who undergo LASIK surgery to correct their vision will experience dry eye at least for a while. “With LASIK, there is damage to the surface of the eye that can affect tear production,” says Cushing. “Part of it is probably because nerves are cut and they are part of what tells the eyes to produce tears. It’s like a feedback mechanism.” Fortunately, this type of dry eye is usually mild and only lasts three to six months. Still, it’s important to get proper treatment as treating the dry eye will make sure the LASIK procedure is as successful as possible. Dry eye can also result from other surgeries that affect the cornea (as LASIK does) and even from cosmetic surgery that involves the eyelids.

www.soltimes.com You wear contact lenses Many people also have dry eye before LASIK surgery, probably as a result of long-term contact lens use to correct the underlying vision problem. Contact lenses interfere with the layer of tears that normally covers and protects the surface of your eyes. This can cause tears to evaporate, leaving your eyes burning or feeling gritty. Wearing your lenses for shorter stretches of time or switching to another type of contact lens may help. Proclear disposal lenses claim to actually attract water to the eye. Or you could wear glasses more often or go for LASIK surgery. Even though dry eye is a side effect of the surgery, it’s usually only a temporary one.
You take medications that up your risk A wide variety of medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, have labels that note dry eyes as a potential side effect because they can decrease tear production. Some of the primary culprits are various
blood pressure medications (diuretics and betablockers), sleeping pills, antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, painkillers, antihistamines and decongestants as well as some medications used to treat acne and Parkinson’s disease. If you’re experiencing dry eye and you’re on one of these drugs, ask your doctor about switching to an alternative. If you can’t switch and need to use lubricating artificial tear eye drops (which are available over-the-counter), talk to your doctor about how to use them correctly. Try to avoid drops with preservatives, which may irritate your eyes more than preservative-free drops.
Your environment is dry Dry air, whether it’s indoors or outdoors, can aggravate your eyes. People who live in dry climates are more prone to developing dry eye, as are people at high altitudes. One study found that only 9% of participants at a lower altitude (about 700 feet above sea level)

You have a vitamin A deficiency
Not enough vitamin A can also lead to dry eyes, although this is more common in developing parts of the world. This is relatively easy to fix as the nutrient is found in many foods—leafy green vegetables like broccoli; orange-coloured vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots and pumpkin; and liver. Other aspects of a healthy diet can be critical to eye health. Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce symptoms of dry eye. The compounds are found

Remembrance Theresa Breslin
This novel is compelling reading for everyone interested in war or romance. When you read it you will see lots of evidence of Breslin’s research into the first world war. It’s also a personal drama mainly of two families who become closer and share the great tragedy of loss. We learn about the war through the personal struggles and traumas faced by the soldiers and Breslin uses a sequence of letter-correspondence to show her truth about the horrors of war. Maggie and Charlotte seem compelled to help the war effort at home but they long for action in France where casualties are severe and nurses are needed urgently. The older generation epitomises the pride and glory of fighting for one’s country and one example of this is when Francis is given a white feather as a sign of cowardice because he has not, as yet, conscripted. The younger generation have mixed feelings; those who have been socially conditioned and less educated share the concept of honour and glory like their parents and grandparents. Others like Francis and eventually Maggie and Charlotte, realise the horrors and brutality of fighting a war to die a horrible death. Where is the honour
and glory? A sad point for me and there were many tragic moments in the novel is when Alex, keen to enlist, but too young, steals his friend’s birth certificate and runs away to do his bit for England and more importantly, to avenge his brother’s death. The reality of war for Alex is cruel and shocking as he lives through a nightmare, his childhood and innocence shattered. Remembrance is an apt title for those survivors and those who lost family members but it is also apt for the reader. The novel explores our vulnerability and the total loss of innocence. It conveys a serious message that is applicable as much today as it was then. In Flanders Field - McCrae. At the Somme, around Thiepval, and in Beaumont, Hamel they walk through preserved trenches and stand looking into the huge nine craters. By the roadside and on the hills they see Cemetery after cemetery, collections of headstones among fields fertile with crops. The white clay clings, and they spend time wiping boots before reboarding the coach. Publishers: Corgi Yearling Books. ISBN: 0-552-54738-7 www.theresabreslin.co.uk

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help that comes from over 37 years experience, you can contact me to make an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you! Today’s topic is about how to avoid phishing scams. For more information send me your email address and password; full name and all the bank details you can find. Thank you from the bottom of my wallet! Just a little bit obvious wasn’t it! Don’t worry if you have fallen for it, I will delete you emails, and scrub the system, after all I want to earn your money helping resolve your computer problems NOT steal it! I have seen this particular type of scan used everywhere from Facebook to my own email account. So what is phishing and why is it spelt badly? Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. The word is a neologism (new word) created as a homophone (sounds similar) of fishing due to the similarity of using a bait in an attempt to catch a fish (victim). Why do people resort to using this form of “social engineering” to achieve their aims? Well that is really easy to answer. It is easier than breaking onto the Hotmail / Google / Yahoo servers and downloading thousands of account details. Actually, it is much easier as you and I are wanting to trust! We have been taught to trust from being very young “If your lost, go find a bobby” - having worked for the police this is the last bit of advice that I would ever
offer any child! Like so many of you, I have been on the end of a “phishing line”, some are direct, devious and so quick that you might miss the fact that you have been hooked, while others are taken slowly, deliberately so that you become emotionally entangled and thereby lose your normal objectivity. Let me give an example of both and the tools to beat them at their own game. Example direct: Today, I got an email from “Outlook” which read “Hi User (Polite introduction but if it was sent to me why didn’t they use my name?), Access to your e-mail is about to Expire, Your Email account will be close if you fail to verify Today (Justification for you getting this email). Please use Follow here (‘Follow Here’ pointed to a web address that had nothing to do with Outlook) to complete verification. Have a great day! Outlook Team.” I click on the web link and was taken to a very official and authentic looking ‘Outlook’ login website (which I knew was fake but I was curious). Now the rules. If when you put the cursor over the address link (usually in blue and underlined) if the address doesn’t ‘look’ right, stay away. If you have already clicked on it and are now at the website, look at the URL (the address in the bar near the top of your browser) does it say “www.outlook.com” or whoever is your email provider, if so close the page and delete the email. Unfortunately, having written the other obvious type of scam “The Girlfriend” (this is a genuine scam - although there might be women out there who only want you for your money!) I had run out of space so will visit that one next week. Anyway until next week – TTFN.

Three out of 10 UK firms plan to cut back investment in Spain
Brexit prompting some companies to rethink overseas strategy, says new report Nearly 30% of British companies with interests in Spain say they will reduce their investments here in the wake of Brexit, says a survey of businesses conducted for the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain. British investment in Spain may feel the impact of Brexit. British investment in Spain may feel the impact of Brexit. /Justin Tallis (AFP) The Barometer on Climate and Outlook for British Investment in Spain, drawn up between July and September, says UK businesses looking for a post-Brexit survival strategy could reduce their exposure to Spain by an average 10% or more. But 60% said they will maintain current investment levels, while 8% reported that they are planning to increase them. The 10-month lack of government in Spain did not hurt British investment Despite Britain’s decision in June to leave the European Union, these

The study finds that the UK has the third-highest foreign direct investment (FDI) stock in Spain, accounting for 11% of the total. As of 2014, British investment had created 161,353 direct and indirect jobs, especially in telecommunications (€14.3 billion), tobacco (€6.2 billion) and wholesale trade (€2.1 billion). The UK has the third highest foreign direct investment (FDI) stock in Spain “This could reflect greater caution by British investors over the political instability in the region in recent times, although the downward trend seems to have reverted in the last few quarters,” reads the report. Respondents said that the business climate in Spain is acceptable and has even improved over the last two or three years. But they also added that the Spanish economy should accelerate its digitization process and that government agencies should invest more in R&D&i and reduce the bureaucratic burden on business. LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com Inheritance tax: New exemptions for inheritance by non-residents: Excellent news: Inheritance tax discrimination of non-residents has come to an end thanks to the European Court of Justice. Make sure that when you file your inheritance tax as a non-resident beneficiary that your solicitor calculates your tax also as if you were a resident in the autonomous region with the maximum connection with the estate (using any additional exemption offered in that region of Spain to its residents). For example, where the property is situated. In the case of an inheritance in Andalucía this will in practice mean that if you are a Spouse or a descendent and receive less than 175,000 euro in value, you will pay no inheritance tax (other regions of Spain have different exemptions). It can result in a bit of confusion because, as before, as you are nonresident you will need to present the tax declarations to the national tax office (Agencia Triburaria) in Madrid . But you can claim the same exemptions as if you were a resident in Andalucia presenting your return to
the regional government in Andalucia (which is where you would have presented it had you been a resident). If the tax calculated is lower as a resident, you are entitled to claim the same tax level as a resident on your self-assessment form. Please note that if you present a self-assessment and do not make the above calculations and claim the most favourable outcome on your self-assessment form, then it would be a complex procedure to get your money back if you later realise that you were entitled to the extra exemption. It is an easy mistake to make. People are still presenting the self-assessment forms without taking advantage of the system that has been created by the sentence of the European Court of Justice of 3rd of September of 2014 and the resulting change the government has made to the inheritance tax forms for nonresidents, introduced on the 31st of December of 2014 For further information about this and who is actually affected by the situation, please read our previous article which we printed back in September of 2014 when the sentence was issued by the ECJ.

Tesla shareholders approve $2.6bn SolarCity takeover
Tesla Motors chief executive Elon Musk has won shareholder approval for a $2.6bn (£2.1bn) deal to buy solar panel company SolarCity, in which he is the largest shareholder. The takeover will expand the electric car maker’s clean energy business. Some investors had opposed the move, citing a conflict of interest. But Tesla said the tie-up was “overwhelmingly” approved by 85% of shareholders not affiliated with the energy business. Earlier this month Mr Musk made an appeal to investors, predicting that SolarCity could add $1bn of extra revenue to Tesla next year, despite it having been loss-making until now. He said the two firms would move towards “accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy” by generating and storing clean energy and providing transport that uses it. Competition Tesla has had a tricky 2016, with its share price tumbling 20% since the

start of the year. There are concerns US president-elect Donald Trump will follow through on a pledge to strip away government subsidies for electric vehicles, which have allowed the firm to compete better on price against petrol and diesel cars. And it also suffered a setback in May when a man was killed driving a Tesla Model S while using the Autopilot function - though a preliminary US National Transportation Safety Board report into the incident said the driver had been speeding moments before he collided with a lorry. It is also having to ramp up vehicle production ahead of the launch of its Model 3 sedan next year, which is aimed at the mass market. The firm faces competition from other similarly priced electric cars that will become available first, including General Motors’ Chevy Bolt and BYD’s Qin EV300.

Alqueria’s borders are under siege. Prospective immigrants from a certain north American country are queuing, begging for asylum. They tell terrible stories of the first of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping into view and taking control of their country. They fear for the future, some do not believe they even have a future. Many entered before the authorities could act. They tried to impose their strange and foreign customs on the quiet, friendly folk of Alqueria. Strange food called hot-dogs and hamburgers appeared. Alquerians examined this fare with suspicion They could think of many things to do with it but eating the things wasn’t one of them. They brought their own entertainment. DVDs full of endless episodes involving sanitised teenagers trying desperately to look cute and propounding a sickening sentimentality which they expecting the folk of Alqueria to embrace and couldn’t understand their reluctance to sit for hours watching the drivel. The very essence of the Alquerian character was at stake. Manuela, Loco Paco, Antonio poyato and Rodriquez where for the first time in Alquerian

history as one. They stood firm to face this tidal wave of foreigners besieging their borders. They differed regarding the solution. Manuela suggested a way of testing the male contingent of would be immigrants, but this was thought to be counter production and would probably make Alqueria even more attractive. Poyato suggested paying them to settle in Australia, Rodriquez was for intergalactic deportation and Loco Paco thought is was Easter Sunday. After much debate however, a wall was decided upon. Manuela was given charge of its construction and ended up with a two foot high picket fence with plenty of flowers. It was a joy to behold but completely useless as an instrument of demarcation. Once more our dynamic quartet put their heads together, this has sometimes been known to cause a fire but on this occasion they came up with the idea of a ‘Test of Suitability’. The potential settlers from across the ‘Pond’ would be asked to spend three minutes in original thought and to write that thought down, in legible and joinedup ‘big person’ writing. The task was beyond them. All thoughts were plagiarists form popular TV programs. The entire population of this particular country from across the ‘Pond’ appear to live their lives by proxy. The whole country thought they were in a ‘soap opera’, judging by recent events a nightmare is possibly a better description. All events and characters depicted in Alqueria are completely fictitious, honest.
pause for thought
Frank Sinatra many years ago recorded the words “It’s very nice to go trav’ling to Paris, London and Rome. It’s oh so nice to go trav’ling but it’s so much nicer, yes it’s so much nicer, to come home.” And having just returned from a very enjoyable holiday in Malta and Gozo, I find myself utterly agreeing with the words of that song. Yes the holiday away from all the necessary Rebuilding and Maintenance, in such friendly islands was a wonderful relaxation, but I couldn’t wait to get back, to get the cement mixer out and crack on. For there’s something really special about home isn’t there? It’s where we can truly relax and be ourselves. And what better place than here in Spain; so yes, echoing those words, I found it very nice to go travelling, but so much nicer to come home. And to a large extent that’s how I as a Christian feel about the season of Advent, which starts this coming Sunday. True, Advent heralds the coming of Christmas, reminding us of the preparations we have yet to do and presents we need to buy in readiness for that great celebration of the birth of Jesus. But far more, Advent, celebrating as it does the anticipated return of that same Jesus as sovereign Lord of all, is intended to remind us that however much we may be enjoying
our time here on Earth, our real home is in heaven. And one of the great benefits of this is the realisation that all the suffering and anguish we and others may endure, is but temporary; that political decisions, however shocking they may seem, are but a part of our journey, which will in time come to an end. So in this season of Advent, along with all the preparation for Christmas I find it helpful to remind myself of the temporal nature of my time here, and that however much I may be enjoying the journey, it really will be so much nicer to go home. One of Those Days #2
As we passed down the Breakfast Goods aisle in Iceland the phone vocalized. ‘Your husband must go to hospital on Monday week.’ The disembodied voice requested. Hospital appointments take precedent over garage appointments, so I said ‘Vale.’ (The conversation was in Spanish), but how were we going to tell Henry that his service was going to be delayed in favour of a mere human? Without mentioning it to him we returned to Renault and rescheduled his service. So now all was fine? Well, yes, until we decided to put Henry through the car wash on the way home. I went to pay for and procure a card with 10€, causing Chica #2 to have a nervous breakdown because they were out of change. Fortunately Chica #1 came to her rescue by taking 6€ out of the bar till and giving it to me before returning to the car and worried owner who were occupying the wash gantry waiting for her to explain how it all worked. Meanwhile Chica #2, still partially in meltdown, opened the card drawer only to find it was bare – she must have known exactly how Mother Hubbard felt. However, this crisis she could handle – Without faltering she sped over to the car wash, disembodied it, extracted a whole handful of cards, handed me one, braced herself for the next disaster that would doubtless befall her (She was having One of Those Days) and returned to her office. We waited. Both manual

washersplus the automatic one were going full tilt when the phone tried to make itself heard over the racket. ‘Steve here. What’s the password for your laptop?’ This was Steve the Computer Wrangler’s first call. Steve’s second call was ‘What is your email password.’ Not so easy – in trying to outsmart the laptop Pete had had to create dozens of accounts, so we took a wild guess. Steve’s third call suggested tactfully that it would be easiest to delete them all and start again. Steve’s fourth call warned us that a message with a verification code was on its way, and we were to call him to tell him what it was. The message came, all 6 figures of it. I remembered the first 3, Pete memorised the second 3, and we rang Steve. Minutes later, just as we pulled into our driveway Steve rang. ‘Laptop’s ready.’ We fetched it, paid Steve a pittance, took a deep breath and relaxed. All was fine. At last!
Enchanting Spain - out now
From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. SolTimes seasonal Menu leek
Like garlic and onion, leeks are a member of the allium family, but have their own distinct flavour - quite harsh when raw (only very young leeks are eaten this way) but, when cooked, very delicate, like a mild onion but with a hint of sweetness. Two thirds of their length is white and firm, and this is the part that is mainly eaten. The rest of the third is made up of the leaves (flags), most of which is discarded. Leeks are very versatile and work well cooked in various recipes or as a side dish. Two of the world’s most famous soups, Scotland’s cock-a-leekie and France’s crème vichyssoise, are based around them. Availability All year round, but at their best from September to March. Choose the best
Look for leeks with a firm, unblemished white lower part, and leaves that are bright green, with a crisp texture. Smaller leeks tend to be sweeter and more tender.
can trace its heritage back through antiquity. Thought to be native to Central Asia, they have been cultivated in this region and in Europe for thousands of years.
Leeks were prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans and were especially revered for their beneficial effect upon the throat. The Greek philosopher Aristotle credited the clear voice of the partridge to a diet of leeks, while the Roman emperor Nero supposedly ate leeks everyday to make his voice stronger. The Romans are thought to have introduced leeks to the United Kingdom, where they were able to flourish because they could withstand cold weather. Leeks have attained an esteemed status in Wales, where they serve as this country’s national emblem. The Welsh regard for leeks can be traced back to a battle that they successfully won against that Saxons in 1620, during which the Welsh soldiers placed leeks in their caps to differentiate themselves from their opponents. Today, leeks are an important vegetable in many northern European cuisines and are grown in many European countries.
History Leeks enjoy a long and rich history, one that

Traditional Northumbrian Leek Pudding Ingredients 225gms SR flour 100gms suet (I use vegetable low fat suet) 50grams butter Salt and Black Pepper 2 leeks finely chopped
Method
Put flour into a bowl, rub in butter and mix in the suet. Add the finely chopped, raw leeks. Slowly add water and mix together to form a light dough that just holds together. Traditionally this is then placed in a pudding basin and covered with grease proof paper. A muslin cloth is then placed over the basin and tied firmly with string around under the lip of the basin. The basin is then placed in a saucepan filled with water, bring to the boil, then simmer for 2 hours. Ensure that the water when boiling, does not overflow into the basin. Keep checking the level of the water,
topping up when necessary. An alternative to mixing the leeks into the pudding is to make the suet pastry without the leeks, use the pastry to line the basin, place the leeks in the centre and place more suet pastry on top to form a lid. Some families did not cook their pudding in a basin but wrapped the whole pudding in a muslin cloth, allowing space for expansion and cooked it in a pan of water. A modern alternative is to make individual leek puddings. The mixture will make 4 to 6. Use ramekins or mini-pudding basins. These only take about 30 minutes to cook. http://helloecoliving.com/

Barcelona cabbie hands in €10,000 in cash left behind by Canadia passenger
tell the world about your clubs / events or associations! the soltimes can tell your local community what is going on and where. send details to editor@soltimes.com
A TAXI driver in Barcelona has handed in €10,000 in cash left behind in his cab by a Canadian tourist.
For all your local advertising needs call SALES on
According to the Mossos d'Esquadra – Catalunya's answer to the Guardia Civil – the cabbie brought in a suitcase containing, among other items, the five-figure sum in euros and the Canadian's passport. This was at around 17.00 yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, and checking with the embassy, police found the tourist's accommodation details. He was staying at a hotel on the Passeig de Gràcia, an upmarket central street which is Barcelona's most famous shopping avenue. The Mossos returned the suitcase to him intact
at the hotel and explained the situation. They said the visitor was 'extremely grateful' for the taxi driver's honesty – an action which is fairly typical in Spanish culture, despite the financial crisis, and which will make the cab driver an unofficial ambassador for Spain in Canada when the lucky tourist gets home. thinkspain
Ecologists ask the City of Carboneras to open file demolition of the Algarrobico
The association Salvemos Mojácar has submitted a letter to the City Council of Carboneras asking him to open a demolition file to the hotel of Azata del Sol on the beach of El Algarrobico "and proceed to demolish it to restore the urban legality and the Altered physical reality, as the property is illegal and illegible and manifestly incompatible with urban planning ", as confirmed by the courts of justice. The environmental group has taken this decision in reaction to what it understands as "dilatory maneuvers" of the Junta de Andalucía, which has announced that it will return to the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) to be the latter to force Azata to Fulfill the sentences that have agreed that the Board is the owner of El Algarrobico for having correctly exercised the socalled "right of withdrawal." The Board has taken this position despite the fact that in June 2015, the TSJA already informed him that it was not competent to force Azata to hand over the land and that that would have to be decided by an ordinary judge through civil procedure. "Ask for a second time the TSJA to force Azata to deliver them The Algarrobico is a waste of time that can only be justified as a more dilatory maneuver by the Junta de Andalucía to delay the demolition of the hotel which is what the Administration has been doing in the courts since

In their brief, ecologists refer to the judgments that have determined that the hotel is illegal as it is built on non-buildable land and of special protection, and also to invade the easement of protection set by the Coastal Law. Therefore, they conclude that "the property is manifestly incompatible with urban planning, so that in accordance with article 183.1 of the LOUA and 38.1 of Royal Legislative Decree 1/92 of June 26, it is appropriate to order its demolition." elmundo translated by google translate

Staying Warm this winter
Whether you’re stuck in a drafty office building all day or simply want to slash that heating bill, there are plenty of low-tech ways to keep warm without cranking up the thermostat or busting out the space heater. Have a hot bev Drinking something warm raises your core body temp. But there’s a little-known, crucial caveat: You have to be bundled. The hot beverage makes you sweat, and if that sweat is allowed to evaporate, it will actually make your colder. You’ll want to skip the hot toddy
too. Don’t be fooled by the warm, fuzzy feelings you get with the first few sips: Alcohol actually lowers your body temperature. Become a baker Just because you’ve vowed to stay
away from that thermostat dial doesn’t mean your house has to feel arctic. Luckily your home has another heat source: the oven. Using it will heat up your kitchen quickly. Plus you’ll be left with a fresh-from-the-oven batch of chocolate chip cookies to combat any residual chills.

divan and drawer divan bed bases now in stock! JUST ARRIVED ELECTRIC BLANKETS!
Light up Lighting a fire is a good way to keep warm, but you don’t need a roaring bonfire to heat things up. Light a few candles around your immediate workspace or at the dinner table to keep those finger tips toasty. You can even DIY your own tea light heater. The added ambiance doesn’t hurt either. Break out the hot water bottle Skip the electric blanket, which will jack up your electric bill, in favour of a more low-tech bed warmer: the hot water bottle. If you don’t want to run to the drug store to buy one, you can also heat up a package of dried beans or rice in the microwave for a minute, wrap it in a pillowcase, and slide it between your sheets for a few hours of warmth. Cover your floors Nothing gives you the chills like walking around on freezing floors, and no amount of fuzzy socks can really protect you from that ice-cold bathroom tile in the a.m. Cover any bare floors with rugs this winter, and you’ll be walking warmer all season.

Ways To Prepare Your Home For Winter The days are getting shorter and colder, which means Jack Frost is at your door and he’s looking to freeze your pipes and give you the flu as an early Christmas gift. Fortunately, here are some tips that’ll keep you warm and protect your home from the jaws of winter.
Sort out your home insurance Check to make sure that your home insurance policy is up to scratch and that you’re covered for winter-related damage. If it comes to sorting out water damage to your Christmas presents or fixing a leaky roof, you’ll be glad you had the right cover in place. Get your boilers looked at A poorly maintained boiler wastes more energy and costs more, and it also runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Either get your boiler serviced before winter or change your old model for a condensing unit. Tree trimming You know who’s to blame for your guttering
getting clogged up with leaves? It’s those trees, making a mess of your house and getting away with it. Take a stand against them and get them trimmed away from the house. This will reduce the amount of foliage that will drop into the guttering. No entry for draughts Those chilly winter breezes are wily things, and they’ll try everything they can to slip through the nooks and crannies of your home. Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and you can either seal these gaps with selfadhesive draught strips, or get one of those funny draught excluders shaped like a snake or a dog. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/

The other semi final was made up of Ken, Tony Davis, John Hill and Debbie Colquhoun against another very good four in John Dedman, Maureen Milson, Linda Harvey and Vic Peters. This was a much closer tussle but Ken’s side came out on top to win 18 to 15 The final was another very close affair with the lead changing on several occasions. Ken drew on all his bowling experience and with his team battled through and eventually won 19 to 14 much to the delight of the watching spectators. Ken Ferry, one of the Club’s founder members and 83 years old, battled off the younger pretenders to the throne to win the Indalo Bowling Club’s 2016 Drawn Rinks with his team. Players who enter this competition are drawn out of a hat and have no say on who they play with, which makes for some interesting combinations. 14 teams entered and after some surprising results the semi final was contested by the experienced team of Maggie Holmes, Alan Henshaw, Dave Bridges and Elsbeth Marlow against another good team in Keith Turner, Linda Lester, Terry Kiggin and Tony Kent. Keith’s team forged ahead and won 18 to 9 after some very good positive bowling

The Two Wood Triples
The Two Wood Triple Competition was held at Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club between 1st and 6th November 2016. This is a very popular competition as it really focusing the mind only having two woods per player. As always there were some very interesting rounds leading to the final between John Beaumont, Peter Sands and Vic Holloway verses Brian Firth, Ian Jackson and Janet Jackson. Brian’s team started off the stronger and after 7 ends were leading 8-4 but then John’s team found their line and length and staged a comeback and won the next 7 ends to take a 13-8 lead. Brian’s team picked up a 3 on the next end but sadly was not enough and John, Peter and Vic were the eventual and deserved winners 18-11. A great final with John bowling particularly well to give his team victory. Many congratulations to John, Peter and Vic and commiserations to Brian, Ian and Janet.

Huercal-Overa CF 1 Atletico Pulpileno 1 The Almeriense Derby ended with a goal a piece at a buoyant El Hornillo The visitors took the lead through a neat free kick on 20 minutes from Perico beating Javi Garcia in the Huercal Overa goal at his left hand post to cries of jubilation from the travelling fans. The lead on lasted 11 minutes when Alvaro slotted home to level the game after a bit of a scramble in the Pulpi area, Los Rojos didn’t mind it wasn’t a spectacular effort as it brought them back in to the game in which they dominated much of the possession but without too many real breakthroughs. This was partly down to Emmanulle Mendy in the heart of the Pulpi defence, the ex Huercal Overa man was on fine form to deny Tyler Knowles from moving one on one with the keeper on numerous occasions. Mendy, the Guinea Bissua international will miss most of January and February due to the African Nations Cup in Gabon, will be a huge miss for Pulpi as they try to stave of relegation.
The second half of the fixture didn’t supply any more goals but none the less had its excitement with Antonio Jesus taking and early bath after 71 minutes for his second yellow card and substitute Glodie heading over the bar in the final minutes when it could have been easier to find the back of the net. The draw was probably the fair result with neither die doing enough to win it, Huercal Overa travel to FC Pinatar next week while Pulpi welcome CD Minera in another important relegation matchup. C.D. I am told it was another good turnout for walking football this week. Most of the usual faces were there and we even had a new victim member, join our happy band. Sadly, although I missed out on the training session this week I am reliably informed that things are all going to plan. HURRAH! I could not go as I had been invited to visit the secret underground cavern of the Over 60`s Nudist Ladies Cheer leaders Team. Of course when I say “invited” what I really mean is that I was summoned to attend. I received the information via a note placed under my windscreen wipers. It was obviously written with lipstick. “Wait on the bridge over junction 525. Be there by 6.00AM” it said. I waited. Suddenly I smelt perfume, then with no warning strong arms pinned me against the side of the bridge railings. In milliseconds I was handcuffed and blindfolded. A vehicle drew up I heard a sliding door open and I was unceremoniously throw inside. I was saved from injury as the floor of the van was covered with a deep pile carpet. “GO! GO! GO!” yelled a sophisticated female voice as we roared away. I`ve seen many spy films and tried to count between corners, but on a couple of occasions the van threw a couple of doughnuts and was totally disorientated. I know we went up a steep and twisty hill so I`m reasonably sure our destination was somewhere near Bedar. The van turned off the main road and for some time we bumped along a track. I have a feeling we also entered a tunnel as there was an echo from the engine. Eventually we came to a halt and I was dragged from the van, released from my restraints and the
blindfold removed. I blinked in the light. I was in a large, huge and enormous cavern. Not only that, but it was big as well. Trying to take it all in I looked around me. The walls were adorned with many portraits of previous members. Around the floor were various training apparatus including exercise bikes, weight lifting machines, parallel bars and trampolines. From the ceiling hung climbing ropes, cargo nets and pairs of ropes with rings. Clad in their bright red with gold trim track-suits, the ladies faced me in a semi circle. I had hoped to able to identify them but all of them wore identical Marilyn Monroe masks. Suddenly loud music blared from a wind up gramophone and the sound of the Joe Loss orchestra playing a very fast cha-cha rent the air. The ladies divested themselves of their track suits and went into their obviously well rehearsed routine. Perhaps I`m being a little cruel here but with some of them it was difficult to tell the difference between track suit and birthday suit. If you get my drift. The routine was truly amazing and included much leaping, summersaults and quite a few splits, some of which were not intended. OUCH! Music and routine ended simultaneously and then, as suddenly as before, I was bound, blindfolded and unceremoniously dumped in the van for the return trip. The last words I heard before the van hurtled off was, “If you know what`s good for you, write well of us.” I lay on the ground until released by a caring member of the public, who wishes to remain anonymous, and found myself on the Plaza in Los Gallardos. An adventure I`ll never forget! Bill White

Vaughan blames batting collapse on ‘little disease’
England must eradicate the “little disease” in the dressing room if they are to avoid the collapses that cost them in the second Test defeat by India, says ex-captain Michael Vaughan. They slipped to 80-5 while conceding a crucial first-innings deficit of 200 in Visakhapatnam, and lost their last eight wickets for 66 runs on the final day as India won by 246 runs. “When they lose one wicket, a panic sets in. They can’t stop it. It is a common trend,” Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special. “Somewhere the mentality has to change and someone has to do something about it.” England narrowly failed to force victory in the first Test of the fivematch series in Rajkot after posting 537 and 260-3 declared. However, the drawn Test series in Bangladesh that preceded the India tour was marked by batting collapses. They were 21-3 and 62-5 in the first and second innings respectively in Chittagong, then slumped to 69-5 in the first innings in Dhaka, where they subsided from 100-0 to 164 all out in the second innings as Bangladesh claimed a maiden Test win over England. “They have a habit of collapsing,”
said former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott on TMS. “They go down like a pack of cards, like dominoes. “This pitch is not a minefield. As soon as a wicket went, they’re fraught.” Captain Alastair Cook said England’s firstinnings collapse in Visakhapatnam, when five wickets fell on the second evening, proved crucial. “In India you’ve got to score firstinnings runs. You can’t afford to lose a session,” he said. “If you get behind the game in India, it’s very difficult to get back.” India wrapped up victory - their second biggest over England in terms of runs - by bowling the tourists out for 158 shortly after lunch on the final day. The 97.3 overs England faced was their third longest fourth innings in a Test in India. Cook, who shared a 75-run opening stand in 50 overs with teenager Haseeb Hameed on Sunday, said: “We’ll hold our heads up high. “We set our stall out in the fourth innings and we made India work very hard.” However, India captain Virat Kohli, named man of the match after making 167 and 81, said: “Scoring runs in between puts some pressure on the bowlers. “It is a basic thing. If you don’t have that intent in the fourth innings, it is tough to play out four and a half sessions.” Bbc.com

Four Nations: Australia hammer New Zealand 34-8 in final at Anfield
Australia produced a clinical display to blow New Zealand away 34-8 and deservedly win the Four Nations in front of 40,042 at Anfield. Mal Meninga’s team went through the tournament unbeaten - and in wrestling the title from the Kiwis reclaimed the world number one ranking. With a quarter of the match gone, tries from Blake Ferguson, Josh Dugan and Trent Merrin plus a penalty from Johnathan Thurston gave the Kangaroos an unassailable 20-0 lead. That was 24-0 by the break as the ruthless Australians added to their score when Dugan touched down a kick from Thurston. Full-back Darius Boyd extinguished any hope of an unlikely comeback with a score shortly after the restart and although two tries from Jordan Kahu reduced the deficit, Australia’s Boyd Cordner had the final word with a late score. Australia coach Meninga is a Liverpool FC fan and must have been delighted with the ruthless performance from his team at Anfield. Meninga had targeted reclaiming the world number one ranking during this tour and that never looked in doubt on a chilly Sunday afternoon when their opponents were simply unable to answer the questions asked of them. The defending champions briefly rallied after Ferguson had touched down in the corner two minutes in and again for a period in the second half, but by and large Australia were utterly dominant. Brilliantly marshalled by halves Thurston and Cooper Cronk and hooker Cameron Smith, they built pressure, dominated field position and looked a class above the only team to have come anywhere near them in this tournament, their group game at Coventry ending 14-8. They targeted the defence of makeshift Kiwi half-back Tohu Harris, kicked penalties to extend their lead even when the game was surely already theirs and for most of the match showed a hunger and desire way beyond what the Kiwis possessed. One year before the World Cup, it is difficult to see on the form they have shown in England how any
other team can prevent them from retaining their title. This competition was David Kidwell’s first as coach of New Zealand - and aside from claiming his first win in their 17-16 victory over England, little has gone right for him or his team. They were held to a draw by Scotland at Workington last week and at Anfield looked some way short of producing the sort of mercurial, against-the-odds performance that saw them win the Four Nations in 2014. New Zealand have now lost four times to Australia in 2016 - once in Stephen Kearney’s last game in charge and three times under Kidwell. There has been some speculation in the Kiwi press that Kidwell would benefit from a coaching mentor and right now there is plenty for him to think about. Shaun Johnson showed glimpses of the brilliance he possesses during the tournament but plus points were at a premium. New Zealand’s poor record in England continues - they lost a Test series against England in 2015 and have not won a Tri-Nations or Four Nations over here - and they will need to vastly improve if they want to threaten at the World Cup. How they lined up Australia: D. Boyd, Ferguson, Inglis, Dugan, Holmes, Thurston, Cronk, Scott, Smith, Woods, Cordner, Gillett, Merrin. Replacements: Morgan, Klemmer, Frizell, S. Boyd. New Zealand: Kahu, Fusitu’a, Kata, Kenny-Dowall, Rapana, Harris, Johnson, J. Bromwich, Luke, Blair, Proctor, Ma’u, Taumalolo. Replacements: Brown, Taupau, Eastwood, Tapine.
