Budget hearing turns into personal grilling By Martin Rand III
news@rockdalenews.com
“Embarrassed” and “ashamed” were the only words Rockdale County Post 1 Commissioner Oz Nesbitt could use to describe how he felt after Commission Chairman Richard Oden addressed Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council Director Marty Jones during his presentation at the 2015 budget work session Tuesday afternoon. Rockdale County Post 2 Commissioner JaNice Van Ness silently shook her head in agreement to Nesbitt’s statement. The shared feelings among the Post 1 and Post 2 commissioners came from the actions of Rockdale County Commission Chairman and CEO Richard Oden. They
both felt as though Oden’s line questioning, presentation of questioning and overall tone towards Jones was out of line during the public meeting. “On behalf of the board of commissioners of Rockdale County, we do apologize,” Nesbitt said to Jones. Oden seemed to be troubled because Jones was requesting the county give $25,000 more annually to the CREDC, but Oden claims he still hasn’t received information related to the CREDC’s exact return on investment to the county, exact number of jobs created, new business comparison for the county and city, an action plan for the CREDC and other financial information

Police, schools, clergy prepare for possible Ferguson-related protests By Staff Reports
news@rockdalenews.com
Local law enforcement agencies, churches and school systems in Conyers, Rockdale and Newton counties are preparing for any possible Ferguson-style conflicts ahead of a grand jury ruling of the officer accused of killing an unarmed black teenager in Missouri. Ferguson, Mo., has drawn protests and sparked a national civil rights debate since the Aug. 9 killing of an unarmed black teen by a white police officer. Nationwide protests are likely following a pending grand jury decision on Dan Wilson, the policer officer accused of killing Michael Brown, 18, and whether he will be charged with any crimes. The City of Conyers is preparing by holding planning meetings between Police

Letter to the Editor: Ministers on protest, involvement Dear Editor: The residents of Ferguson, Missouri have suffered great pain resulting from the police shooting death of Mike Brown on August 9, 2014. This trauma was exacerbated by the many hours that Mr. Brown’s lifeless body lay slain in the street. The admitted overreaction by Ferguson police has also been a source of agitation. As the Grand Jury process draws to a close, there is widespread concern of violence as law enforcement prepares for the worst.
The Bible records some of the most violent episodes in human history. Even more disconcerting is the notion that the first precrucifixion violence against Jesus was indeed police brutality (John 18:22). Yet, in all of its wisdom, the words of Jesus compel us to be nonviolent, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9) In an effort to be peacemakers, the clergy, school officials and law enforcement of Rockdale and Newton counties have joined with co-laborers in Dekalb, Clayton, Fulton, City of Atlanta and others to affirm: • We support the constitutional right to peaceful protests and condemn violence against ALL people, property & first responders (EMS, fire dept., police, deputies, highway patrol, etc). • We call on clergy to minister & champion the needs of the community. We urge clergy to mentor & monitor youth in their efforts to promote constructive, redemptive change. • We support civic involvement
through the expansion of voter registration. We urge every registered voter to make your voice heard in each election, especially for local political offices. • We call on the business community and philanthropists to support economic empowerment
by creating more jobs and career opportunities for underprivileged youth. As events unfold both nationally and locally, we submit our leadership in the ongoing effort for equality and social justice. In the event that the
Grand Jury decision is made public this weekend, we will immediately convene to conduct a Redemption Forum for Youth and Young Adults at Springfield Baptist Church, 1877 Iris Dr, Conyers. Stay tuned to social media (Facebook - Springfield Baptist-Church, Twitter -
@pastorewl and Instagram - @ SBCGROWTH) for the exact date and time of this event.

BUDGET From front page
dating as far back as six years. Oden made Jones continuously walk to the commissioner’s bench from the podium to retrieve documents he kept pulling out of folder. Jones read aloud the first two documents. They read as though they were e-mails, and one was dated from November 2013 and the other was from August. In the documents Jones read, the aforementioned items and others were being requested from Jones. Oden then stated he was going to give each commissioner a copy of Jones’ job description and read aloud that from January to August, Jones only made 48 calls, which Jones clarified to say it was 48 different people he called. “Mr. Chairman, I don’t understand the interrogation,” said Van Ness. “This is a budget hearing.” Oden quickly responded that he was simply asking questions to Jones, the same way Van
Ness did every department director who made a presentation during the work session. “I’m asking questions for budget requests of $25,000,” he said. “I asked for information. I have yet to receive that information.”
