10 Health Benefits of Honey D written by Lee Udell

iscover the health benefits of one of the oldest sweeteners on earth, plus some interesting trivia, some great recipes and a few cautions. Bees swallow, digest and regurgitate nectar to make honey; this nectar contains almost 600 compounds. We need our bees, so let’s do everything we can to save them and keep them here on this earth. Honey is so good we have included it in our list of powerfoods that should be in your kitchen right now.

Health Benefits: 1. Prevent cancer and heart disease: Honey contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. 2. Reduce ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders: Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis. This may be related to the 3rd benefit… 3. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal: “All honey is antibacterial, because the bees add an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide,” said Peter Molan, director of the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. 4. Increase athletic performance: Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. This has now been verified with modern studies, showing that it is superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery time over other sweeteners. 5. Reduce cough and throat irritation: Honey helps with coughs, particularly buckwheat honey. In a study of 110 children, a single dose of buckwheat honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough and allowing proper sleep. 6. Balance the 5 elements: Honey has been used in Ayurveda medicine in India for at least

6 HEALTHY IN ROCKDALE | FALL 2016

4000 years and is considered to affect all three of the body’s primitive material imbalances positively. It is also said to be useful in improving eyesight, weight loss, curing impotence and premature ejaculation, urinary tract disorders, bronchial asthma, diarrhea, and nausea. Honey is referred as “Yogavahi” since it has a quality of penetrating the deepest tissues of the body. When honey is used with other herbal preparations, it enhances the medicinal qualities of those preparations and also helps them to reach the deeper tissues. 7. Blood sugar regulation: Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is NOT the same as white sugar or artificial sweeteners. Its exact combination of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. Some honeys have a low hypoglycemic index, so they don’t jolt your blood sugar. 8. Heal wounds and burns: External application of honey has been shown to be as effective as conventional treatment with silver sulfadiazine. It is speculated that the drying effect of the simple sugars and honey’s antibacterial nature combine to create this effect. 9. Probiotic: Some varieties of honey possess large amounts of friendly bacteria. This includes up to 6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of Bifidobacterium. This may explain many of the “mysterious therapeutic properties of honey.” 10. Beautiful skin: Its anti-bacterial qualities are particularly useful for the skin, and, when used with the other ingredients, can also be moisturizing and nourishing! For a powerful home beauty treatment for which you probably have all the ingredients in your kitchen already, read Carrot Face Mask. Different honeys have different flavonoid profiles, depending on the floral source of the nectar.

Types of Honey (most popular) • Alfalfa • Manuka • Blueberry • Orange Blossom • Buckwheat • Wildflower • Clover There are at least 40 types – each one has a distinctive taste and unique properties. Darker honey tends to have higher antioxidant levels. Monofloral honey (honey from a single plant species) usually has the lowest glycemic index (GI). For example, locust honey from the Black Locust tree has a GI of 32. Clover honey, which is used commercially, has the highest glycemic index at 69. Honey Suggestions: If you want to get the goodness from your honey, make sure it is pure and raw. Raw honey contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes not present in refined honey. Honey Cautions: • Best not to feed to infants. Spores of Clostridium botulinum have been found in a small percentage of honey in North America. This is

not dangerous to adults and older children, but infants can have a serious reaction or illness in the first year. Do not add honey to baby food or use as a soother to quiet a fussy or colicky baby. Most Canadian honey is not contaminated with the bacteria causing infant botulism, but it’s still best not to take the chance. • Honey is a sugar, so do not eat jars full of it if you value your good health and want to maintain a healthy weight. It has a high caloric value and will put you on a sugar high and low.

Feature Recipe for Honey Ingredients • olive oil, for greasing • 3 pounds chicken wings, • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/3 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • Honey 3 tablespoons or more — to taste for your family • 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce • Curry powder to taste • Cumin to taste • 1 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco, to taste Instructions Preheat the oven to 400-450 degrees. Use the olive oil to lightly cover 2 baking pans.

Toss the wings in a large bowl with olive oil, salt and pepper. Place them on the pan, leave space inbetween to make sure they cook evenly. Turn the wings and rotate the position of the pans halfway through, until crisp and golden brown, 45-50 minutes. Sauce: whisk the honey, soy sauce, curry powder, cumin and hot sauce together in a large bowl. Place the chicken wings in the sauce and toss them. Place them back on the baking pan and continue to bake until glaze is crispy, about 5 minutes. Serve with a small bowl of sauce for dipping. FALL 2016 | HEALTHY IN ROCKDALE

What is a 4D Ultrasound? written by Lee Udell

U

ltrasound imaging has become a routine part of pre-natal care, from confirming and dating a pregnancy to diagnosing certain concerns or conditions of pregnancy. Of course, expectant parents look forward to learning the sex of their babies via ultrasound about midway through a pregnancy. But, these days, more and more obstetricians are offering 3D or 4D ultrasounds, to give expectant parents a three-dimensional image of their developing baby, with the added effect of live video. While traditional two-dimensional ultrasound scanning provides a flat, black-and-white image of the fetus, 3D ultrasound uses high-speed computing software to provide a three-dimensional image compiled from slightly differing 2D images. Four-dimensional ultrasound takes this one step further, by combining the static 3D images into a live streaming video – basically 3D ultrasound in live motion! Four-dimensional ultrasound shows motion

of the fetal heart wall or valves, as well as blood flow in various vessels, providing physicians the opportunity to study the motion of various moving organs in the fetus. While the clinical applications of 4D ultrasound are still being studied, many providers offer the scans to patients as keepsake videos. Thanks to 4D ultrasound, you can watch your baby smile or yawn! The process for a 4D ultrasound is the same as a traditional 2D scan. You’ll lie down, and a technician will put a conducting gel on your belly. Then the technician holds a probe against your belly and moves it around to get an image. Studies suggest that 3D and 4D ultrasounds are safe, plus the images can help doctors spot a problem earlier. However, studies provided at commercial centers, instead of a doctor’s office, may be offered by uncertified or unskilled operators, who aren’t trained to use the images for diagnostic purposes. Who Needs Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy? written by Lee Udell

A

s both men and women age, our bodies gradually produce fewer hormones, and our quality of life begins to decrease. We might get more forgetful or tire out easier. Maybe we notice a little weight gain that seems harder to shed. It’s even possible that the romance starts to go out of our relationships. Lest you think this is all part of the “normal” aging process – and there’s nothing to be done about it – think again. Bioidentical hormone replacement (BHRT) has proven to be a safe and effective means for both men and women to find relief. The hormonal decline that occurs with menopause in women causes uncomfortable symptoms, such as: • Hot flashes and night sweats, the most common signs of menopause. • Sleep problems¸ including insomnia. • Increased risk of heart disease. • Vaginal changes, which cause dryness and painful intercourse. •B one loss, which can cause osteoporosis, a condition that increases the risk of bone fractures. • Weight gain. Hormone replacement in women has also been proven to decrease risk of heart disease and decrease bone loss, resulting

in fewer bone fractures. Unlike the more dramatic hormone plunge that occurs in women during menopause, hormone changes in men occur gradually. The term “male menopause” – or andropause – is sometimes used to describe decreasing testosterone levels or a reduction in the bioavailability of testosterone related to aging. Low testosterone might cause: •C hanges in sexual function, such as erectile dysfunction, reduced sexual desire, fewer spontaneous erections and infertility. • Changes in sleep patterns. •P hysical changes, including increased body fat; reduced muscle bulk and strength; and decreased bone density. •E motional changes, such as a decrease in motivation or self-confidence, depression or trouble concentrating. BENEFITS OF TREATING Hearing Loss written by Lee Udell

People affected by hearing loss often give a range of reasons for not seeking help. Maybe they know someone who bought a hearing device, but didn’t care for it. Maybe they think a hearing device will cost too much. Or maybe they simply think they can live with their hearing loss, because it really isn’t “that bad.”

O

verall, it’s estimated that 29 million Americans – 17% of our adult population – are affected by hearing loss. Unfortunately, only about 20% of those who might benefit from treatment actually seek help. Approximately 1/3 of American between the ages of 65 and 74 – and nearly half of those over 75 – have hearing loss. In the elderly, hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit, and it can significantly impact everyday life. Yet, the elderly are often slow to acknowledge their hearing loss, considering it a normal part of the aging process. Studies link untreated hearing loss to: • Irritability, frustration, negativism and anger • Fatigue, tension, stress and depression • Avoidance or withdrawal from social situations • Social rejection and loneliness • Embarrassment and worry • Reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety • Impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks • Reduced job performance and earning power • Diminished psychological and overall health A survey by the National Council on Aging in 1999 documented the impact of untreated hearing loss. Nationwide, this survey of nearly 4,000 adults with hearing loss and their significant others showed significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety and other psychosocial disorders in individuals who were not wearing hearing aids. On the flip side, the survey showed that hearing aid use positively affected quality of life for both the hearing aid wearer and his or her significant other. Treating hearing loss can help keep cognitive decline at bay and ensure better mental, emotional and psychological health. Studies that showed even mild hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s also showed that people with hearing loss who use hearing

aids are no more likely to get Alzheimer’s than people without hearing loss. Seeking treatment earlier, rather than later, has the potential to literally transform lives. Consider these ways in which hearing loss treatment has been shown to improve quality of life: • Earning power • Communicating within relationships • Intimacy and warmth in family relationships • Easier communication • Increased emotional stability • Feeling greater control over your life • Improved mental functioning • Better physical health • More participation in social and group settings What’s more, hearing loss treatment was shown to reduce: • Discrimination toward the person with the hearing loss • Behaviors meant to compensate for hearing loss, such as pretending that you hear what someone is saying • Anger and frustration in relationships • Depression • Feelings of paranoia • Anxiety • Social fears and concerns • Self-criticism In fact, overall, people who use hearing aids report being happier and more content with their lives than those who choose not to treat their hearing loss. So, if you’re suffering with untreated hearing loss, and you’ve been hesitant to take that first step to a better life, consider the benefits of hearing aids.

Common Questions About YOUR THYROID written by Lee Udell and Sumana Reddy, MD

F

or such a tiny gland, the thyroid carries a lot of responsibility. From the time you’re in the womb – and all the way through your Golden Years – the thyroid gland is the “engine” in our bodies that powers everything from body temperature and metabolism to muscle strength and the health of your heart, brain, kidneys and liver. Dr. Sumana Reddy of Rockdale Endocrinology answers some of the most common questions about your thyroid. Question: Why is my thyroid important? Dr. Reddy: Your thyroid’s purpose is to produce, store and release into the bloodstream hormones that regulate, or in some way participate in the process of, a wide range of crucial bodily functions. This little butterfly-shaped gland typically weighs less than an ounce, but its role throughout your life is powerful. Located in the front of the neck – just below the Adam’s apple – the thyroid plays a crucial role in digestion, skeletal growth, sexual development and so much more. Question: How does my thyroid work? Dr. Reddy: The pituitary gland – the “master gland” at the base of the brain – produces thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which causes the thyroid to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), two key hormones that influence virtually every cell in your body. If the amount of thyroid hormone in your body is too low, the pituitary releases TSH, signaling the thyroid to produce more until the body’s needs are met. Question: What causes thyroid problems? Dr. Reddy: Thyroid disease can occur at any stage of life. Diseases of the thyroid gland can be primarily classified as problems involving either the function of the thyroid (either overactive or underactive) or the structure of the thyroid (changes in size or development of nodules). Functional problems are initially evaluated based on blood tests which look at levels of thyroid hormones, coupled with symptoms which may be present. Structural problems can include an enlarged thyroid gland (also called goiter), a small thyroid gland (atrophic), or the development of either singular nodules or multiple thyroid nodules (multinodular). Structural problems are typically evaluated using a thyroid ultrasound. Oftentimes, a thyroid gland can have both a structural problem and a functional problem at the same time, so proper evaluation of a thyroid condition should include careful examination of both the structure and function of the gland. Question: What happens when there’s too little thyroid hormone produced? Dr. Reddy: An underactive thyroid gland is among the most common thyroid conditions – it’s called hypothyroidism. Typical symptoms include abnormal weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, intolerance to

cold, impaired memory (“brain fog”), constipation and a slow heart rate. Hypothyroidism affects women more often than men and is particularly common in women over 60. Treatment is typically a daily dose of a synthetic hormone, such as levothyroxine. Question: What if the thyroid is making too much hormone? Dr. Reddy: Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, increases a person’s metabolic rate, causing symptoms such as heart palpitations, excessive sweating, weight loss, diarrhea, muscle weakness and sensitivity to heat. Options for treating hyperthyroidism include antithyroid medications to slow down production of thyroid hormones, radioactive iodine ablation, or complete removal of the gland. If the entire gland is removed or if ablation is performed, patients usually must remain on hypothyroid medication for life. Question: What about thyroid growths? Dr. Reddy: Sometimes a collection of cells within the thyroid grow and produce a lump, or thyroid nodule. These kinds of nodules are relatively common and can develop at any age, but mostly occur in older adults – more often women than men. They might be discovered during a physical exam, or they could be detected incidentally during a CT scan or ultrasound being performed for some unrelated reason. Fortunately, 90-95% of these nodules are not cancerous (benign). However, if you suspect nodules and you have certain other symptoms – such as difficulty swallowing or breathing, changes in your voice, a rapid increase in nodule size, or a history of radiation exposure – consult an endocrinologist to ensure the nodules aren’t cancerous. Question: What if the growth is cancerous? Dr. Reddy: The type of cancer will determine the treatment plan and prognosis. For less aggressive forms of thyroid cancer, surgery is usually recommended to remove the nodule (and any enlarged lymph nodes). This may be followed several weeks later by the administration of radioactive iodine. Thyroid disease is more common than diabetes or heart disease, and simply being 50 or older poses the highest risk factor for developing a thyroid condition. Unfortunately, estimates suggest that more than half of those with thyroid disease go undiagnosed. If you suspect a thyroid condition, make an appointment with your family doctor or an endocrinologist (a doctor who treats people who suffer from hormonal imbalances). Dr. Reddy, at Rockdale Endocrinology Associates in Conyers, helps patients with thyroid conditions, diabetes or other endocrine conditions, through education and treatment. How to Beat the Couch Potato Curse C

written by Lee Udell

ommitments to work and family can make it difficult to squeeze in regular workouts, and the call of the couch is often more appealing than a trip to the gym at the end of a long day juggling both personal and professional obligations. But exercise is integral to a healthy lifestyle, so it’s important that men and women take steps to incorporate exercise into their daily routines. Figure out when you’re free. Finding free time is perhaps the biggest hurdle adults must clear when attempting to exercise more. Track your daily schedule for a week or two, making note of down times during the day when you might be able to squeeze in 30 to 60 minutes of exercise. If you notice you’re spending your lunch hours catching up on personal emails or surfing the Internet, then consider joining a gym near your office and turning those lunch hours into workouts. If your mornings are not dominated by getting the kids ready for school, then wake up a half hour earlier each morning to squeeze in some time on the treadmill. You likely have some down time with regard to your daily schedule, and identifying such time is the first step toward making better use of it. Make it a team effort. Daily exercise is not just good for adults; it’s great for kids, too. Parents looking to fit more physical activity into their daily routines should consider involving their children, many of whom are dealing with a fitness crisis of their own. According to a 2014 report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents over the last three decades, putting youngsters at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, prediabetes, bone and joint problems, and sleep apnea. Parents can make daily exercise a family affair, which increases the time they spend with their children while ensuring their kids stay fit as well. Men and women without families also can

16 HEALTHY IN ROCKDALE | FALL 2016

make daily exercise a team effort by working out with a friend or significant other. The buddy system often proves motivational, encouraging men and women to exercise even on those days when the couch is calling. Make exercise more interesting. Many workout routines fall by the wayside because they simply do not engage men and women no matter how motivated they are to lose weight. An hour on the treadmill can seem like an eternity to certain men and women, who can benefit by choosing workout routines that are less monotonous. For example, Zumba is a combination of dance and aerobic exercise that is growing in popularity. In lieu of spending an hour on the treadmill or elliptical machine, Zumba participants get an equally if not exceedingly challenging cardiovascular workout that many find more fun than traditional aerobic exercise thanks to its incorporation of dance. For those without such happy feet, bring a tablet along to the gym and catch up on your favorite television shows or a good book during your cardiovascular routines. The more interesting you find your workout routine, the more likely you are to find time for that routine every day. Choose an accessible routine. When planning your workout, make it as accessible as possible. While sports like kayaking and mountain bike racing make for great exercise, such activities are not readily accessible to many working professionals with busy schedules. Join a gym that’s only a short drive from home, or purchase some gym equipment you can set up in your own home. The more accessible a workout routine is, the more likely you are to embrace that routine. The call of the couch can be difficult to ignore. But the side effects of a sedentary lifestyle can be grave, so men and women should work to find ways to include exercise in their daily routines. Diet and exercise make great bedfellows for men and women looking to live a healthier lifestyle.

What is Strawberry Laser? written by Lee Udell

I

f you’re looking to quickly shed your “muffin top,” “love handles,” or “spare tire,” Strawberry Laser Lipo treatments can be a safe, time-saving and lower cost alternative – without liposuction or surgery. The Strawberry Laser is FDA cleared, completely noninvasive, and painless, and it’s been successfully melting fat and recontouring the figures of millions of men and women in more than 30 countries for several years now. Most patients see a difference with their first treatment, and they typically reach their goals in just eight twiceweekly sessions. Using a laser unit about the size of a basketball – and shaped like a big strawberry – an array of multiple tiny “cold” lasers shine harmlessly and painlessly on the surface of your skin, passing into the fat tissue beneath. Your fat is

stimulated to melt, and the liquefied lipids are transported away by your lymphatics and expelled from your body exactly as if the fat had been burned off by exercise. Strawberry Laser Lipo is safe for all skin types, and it provides a permanent solution in the fight against stubborn pockets of fat on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, legs and arms. Each treatment typically lasts anywhere from 3045 minutes, and you can walk out afterwards and resume normal activities, without any downtime. Patients receive an initial consultation to review medical history, discuss treatment areas, and establish realistic expectations regarding what Strawberry Laser Lipo can achieve for you. Prior to and after each treatment, you’ll be weighed and measured, and photographs will be taken to document your progress.

The team at Multi-Care Holistic Health Center in Conyers is trained to provide Strawberry Laser Lipo and help you say goodbye to problem areas in just four weeks. Their practice focuses on wellness, combining the best of holistic and traditional medicines, working with your body’s own healing mechanism. Effective Treatments for a Variety of

Skin Conditions

A

written by Lee Udell

re you dealing with skin problems – maybe acne, psoriasis, rosacea or suspicious moles? Do you have itchy, scaly skin or warts? Well, thanks to modern medicine, today there are effective treatments for a variety of skin conditions, from skin fungus or infection to eczema or hair loss. Dermatologists are doctors who specialize in skin care. They diagnose and treat more than 3,000 different diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes (the lining inside the mouth, nose and eyelids). In addition, dermatologists can also help improve the appearance of your skin, hair and nails. For example, a dermatologist can help patients: ➧ Diminish wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging, ➧ Have less noticeable acne scars, and ➧ Look more like themselves after surgery to remove skin cancer. Taking care of your skin can be challenging – after all, it’s the largest organ of your body. While many skin problems can be solved by over-the-counter products – think moisturizers for dry skin, hydrocortisone for mild rashes, or special shampoos for dandruff – many skin difficulties require the help of a dermatologist. Most chronic skin conditions, such as eczema, acne or psoriasis, may not be curable, but your dermatologist can help you manage them with drugs and by paying close attention to your lifestyle. For example, psoriasis, a common skin disorder which usually appears in early adulthood, can be treated with measures ranging from steroid or retinoid creams to light therapy or drugs which suppress the immune system, depending on the severity of the rash and the areas of the body affected. Many other types of skin problems are only temporary and can be treated with medications or simply with time. Examples of these include cold sores, plantar and palmer warts, and skin tags. For example, plantar warts – which appear on the bottom of the foot – can now be treated by injecting Candida yeast directly into the wart. The body’s immune system gets the signal that there’s abnormal tissue in the wart, starting an immune response that breaks down the wart

18 HEALTHY IN ROCKDALE | FALL 2016

virus. And unlike other treatments for plantar warts, the warts rarely return after treatment. Some skin conditions, such as skin cancers, can not only be unsightly, they can also be life-threatening. As a general rule, you should see a dermatologist for the following: ➧ Cystic or stubborn acne that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter products: If 2-3 months of using products containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid doesn’t clear up your acne, you probably need prescription medications to tackle the problem. ➧ Dark discolorations or moles on your skin that are changing, won’t heal or bleed: These may be skin cancer, so see a dermatologist as soon as possible. Even if you don’t see any of these warning signs, you should be examined regularly for signs of skin cancer, particularly if you are fair skinned or have a history of tanning or burning. ➧ Itching or rashes that won’t go away: This could be eczema or some other type of dermatitis. You could also be having an allergic reaction. A dermatologist can prescribe medications to take care of these bothersome skin conditions. ➧ Skin disorders or skin that won’t heal: Psoriasis, chronic seborrhea or dandruff, rosacea, diabetesrelated calluses, or wounds that don’t heal may require prescription oral or topical drugs. ➧ Scars, skin discolorations, stretch marks, or other cosmetic concerns: Dermatologists have access to prescription options, laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures that can address these concerns. Regardless of whether you have any of these conditions, an annual appointment with your dermatologist can help you stay healthy and free of not only cosmetic issues, but also more serious conditions like skin cancer. DO YOU SUFFER FROM….

re you tired of covering up your legs because of unsightly spider veins and varicose veins? At Atlanta Heart Vascular Services, we feel your pain and are proud to announce that help for varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) has arrived. Atlanta Heart Vascular Services provides comprehensive vein care and also offers the VenaCure EVLT procedure for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Varicose veins can cause aching pain and discomfort and sometimes lead to more serious complications signaling a higher risk of circulatory problems. For others, varicose veins and spider veins are simply a cosmetic concern. Our extensively trained vascular specialists are here to treat you using the most advanced vascular techniques and technologies that the industry has to offer. Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a progressive medical condition that worsens over time and affects the

veins and vessels in the leg that carry oxygen-poor blood back toward the heart. Varicose veins are enlarged veins in the leg that appear like twisted, bulging cords and progress to CVI if left untreated. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is caused by arteriosclerosis, or “hardening of the arteries.” This problem occurs when fatty material (plaque) builds up on the walls of your arteries and causes the arteries to become narrower. The walls of arteries also become stiffer and cannot widen (dilate) to allow greater blood flow when needed. As a result, when the muscles of your legs are working harder (such as during exercise or walking), they cannot get enough blood and oxygen, which results in symptoms such as leg pain. The vascular specialists at Atlanta Heart Vascular Services offer comprehensive vein care starting with conservative strategies as well as more advanced VenaCure endovenous laser therapy. Finding a Comprehensive

PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN written by Lee Udell

A

s Baby Boomers age, comprehensive primary care is becoming more and more essential to good health, wellness and needed medical care. Aging gracefully – physically – requires attention to not only lifestyle/behaviors to ensure good nutrition, plenty of exercise and reduced stress, but also intellectual challenge and social engagement. Much of this is a personal mission, to be undertaken by the individual. But along the way, we also need a good primary care physician (PCP), to help guide us on the journey. With a healthy doctor-patient relationship, quality of life can be enhanced, chronic illnesses can be managed successfully – often without referral to specialists – and total overall health care costs can be reduced. Finding a PCP with whom you feel comfortable talking is the first step in establishing good communication and ensuring your good health. It’s important that your PCP get to know you, to establish what your health is

normally like, so he or she can gauge changes in your wellness. What’s more, a doctor who knows more about you can better make medical decisions that suit your values and daily habits. A PCP who is well versed in gerontology issues – those related to the aging process – understands the importance of one-on-one interaction with patients and can better help you with preventive care. What’s more, a PCP who offers primary care for seniors can help consolidate and coordinate fragmented care through a variety of outside medical and surgical specialists, as needed. At Family Practice of Conyers, Dr. Alvin Griffin and his staff offer personalized care for you and your family. Dr. Griffin and his staff will take the time to talk with you, listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and truly get to know you. Call 770-9220076 today for an appointment.

No Fear, Pain Free...

Sedation Dentistry written by Lee Udell

D

o you get sick with fear just thinking about having your teeth cleaned? Would you rather deal with the agony of a toothache than set foot in the dentist’s office? Well, you’re not alone. Every day, thousands of people put off dental work, because they’re so phobic about going to the dentist, they’d simply rather not seek treatment. If you’re one of those people who avoid dentists like the plague, sedation dentistry may be the solution you’ve been looking for. Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental procedures, and can range from minimal sedation (where you’re awake but relaxed) to deep sedation (you’re on the edge of consciousness, but can still be awakened). Many dentists offer sedation for everything from simple procedures, like teeth cleaning, to something more invasive, like a root canal. But not all dentists can provide sedation – only those who have been specially trained can offer this comforting solution for those who fear the dentist’s chair.

Sedation can be administered as an inhaled gas – known as “laughing gas” – through a mask that’s placed over your nose. The gas tends to wear off quickly, so you’ll most likely be able to drive yourself home after your procedure. Oral sedation can be tailored from mild to moderate, depending on the procedure. A pill taken about an hour prior to the procedure will make you drowsy, and might possibly cause you to fall asleep during your procedure. This is the type of anesthesia most people commonly associate with sedation dentistry. Regardless of which type of sedation you receive, you’ll also get a local anesthetic – numbing medication at the site where the dentist will be working – to ensure there’s no discomfort from your procedure. The dentists at Hedrick and Dodson Family Dentistry in Conyers offer sedation dentistry and will be happy to talk with you about how this option can ease your dental fears. Call today for an appointment – 770-922-3131. n

hen it comes to caring for children with GI issues, personal and comprehensive care is a top priority at Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates’ Pediatric and Adolescent Division. With two board certified pediatric gastroenterologists on staff – Dr. Nirav Patel and Dr. Tejas Mehta – infants, children, ‘tweens, and teens receive the same high level of care AGA has been providing to adults in metro Atlanta for 40 years. While all types of digestive and liver disorders are evaluated and treated by AGA’s pediatric specialists, “some of the more common digestive issues seen in many young patients are acid reflux and constipation,” says Dr. Patel. “Where possible, I like to take an approach focused on nutrition and lifestyle changes, in addition to traditional medicine.” Children and adolescents can also suffer from many of the same GI issues that affect adults, including abdominal pain, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, esophagitis, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, and motility disorders. Chronic abdominal pain, for example, can be a

sign of a food allergy or something more serious, like inflammatory bowel disease. “The incidence of food allergies and hypersensitivity to foods is on the rise,” says Dr. Mehta, “and that can result in more serious gastrointestinal disorders.” To help with these issues, nutrition counseling is available for patients and their families. “We can really make a difference in a child’s life,” says Dr. Mehta. “When families walk in the door, they should expect to receive high quality care and responsiveness,” adds Dr. Patel. “Dr. Mehta and I are dedicated to offering complete pediatric digestive healthcare services to our patients.” To schedule an appointment at any location, call 404.843.6320. Fighting Breast Cancer Your age, lifestyle and family play a role in prevention By Dr. Kathleen Lambert

T

here’s no magic formula that predicts who will be at risk for developing breast cancer. A woman living in the United States has an approximately 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is most curable when it is detected at an early stage; thus, breast screening is a very important part of a woman’s health care plan. The majority of women (at least 80 percent) diagnosed with breast cancer do not have any family history of the disease. That’s why it’s so important to get yearly check-ups and mammograms for all women starting at age 40. Two easy ways to reduce your risk for breast cancer: • Eat healthy • Stay fit Because breast cancer has been associated with obesity, watching your diet and exercising are great lifestyle changes anyone can make (and they have benefits for other aspects of women’s health as well!). Family History If a woman has a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, her risk for these cancers may also be increased. Genetic counseling and testing can help women understand how their family history impacts their odds of developing breast and/or other

cancers and learn more about options for increased screening or even surgery to reduce their risk. A simple blood or saliva test can determine if a person carries a mutation in a gene that increases the chance of developing breast, or other cancers. The most wellknown examples are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes; however additional breast cancer genes have also been discovered. A genetic mutation can be inherited from a mother or father. Each child of a parent who carries a mutation in one of these genes has a 50 percent chance (or 1 in 2) of also inheriting the mutation. Therefore, genetic testing is not just information for one person, but a whole family. Anyone considering testing should first speak with their doctor who can refer them to a genetic counselor, so all of the implications of testing can be discussed. Age is an important risk factor The time for average risk women to begin having yearly mammograms is age 40, but some doctors recommend beginning earlier depending on certain factors, like family history. Although mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, statistics show that by screening for breast cancers and detecting them at the earliest possible point, they can lower the risk of a woman dying of breast cancer by approximately 35 percent in women over the age of 50.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR PEACE OF MIND written by Lee Udell

S

o many things in life work out more smoothly with a little planning. Family vacations. Home remodeling. Career choices. Retirement. And the list goes on. Typically, we find ourselves more pleased with well-planned decisions that we make for ourselves, rather than last-minute choices or plans made by someone else. And the same is true of making decisions about your final arrangements. If you’ve ever been responsible for planning the funeral of a loved one, you know how difficult that time can be. Even a simple funeral can involve more than 125 decisions – decisions you make in a short period of time and at a point when you’re very emotional. It’s often said: “A funeral is not a day in a lifetime, but a lifetime in a day.” With that thought in mind, planning a funeral for a loved one makes these final arrangements even more important. So just imagine if you or your loved one could make these important arrangements in advance. Think of the burden removed when all these decisions are made at a time when you’re able to think more clearly and less emotionally. There are several things to keep in mind when you decide it’s time to plan for a funeral. The most common decisions families face today are: o Burial, cremation or both? o Public visitation with an open casket or more of a gathering? o Who will speak and what will they say? o Where will the services be held? My church, a local funeral home or somewhere else? o Where will everyone gather for a meal before or after the services? o Where will my final resting place be for my casket or my urn? o Who can I trust to make all of the correct

decisions? o Who will be able to file my insurance or pay the funeral expenses? One of the greatest gifts you can leave your loved ones could be the plans for your funeral service. You have the ability to relieve your loved ones from the emotional burdens of what you wanted at your funeral. What’s more, you can also relieve them from the financial burden of how to pay for your funeral services. Scot Ward Funeral Services, in Conyers, provides complete facilities, amenities and final resting place options in the East Metro Atlanta area. Conveniently located one half mile off of I-20, Scot Ward will help you plan for the decisions you or your loved ones will eventually need to make. In the words of a family served by Scot Ward Funeral Services: Scot, Thanks so much to you and your staff for taking care of things for Johnny’s Memorial Service. Everyone was so kind and caring, and this means so much when we are suffering the loss of a dear loved one. I am so thankful that we had made all the plans before Johnny passed away. This really helped our family. Your room for the family luncheon was great, and Jim and Nicks did a great job. Thanks again! In God’s Love, Morene Whitworth (family of Johnny Whitworth). P.S. So kind of you to make a donation to our church. You can visit www.scotward.com to learn more and begin the process of planning your or a loved one’s funeral services in advance by using the Online Arranger. What’s True About the Flu? written by Lee Udell

Y

ou got your flu shot last year, and now it’s that time of year when you see messages everywhere urging you to get another one. Influenza is a serious disease, and it can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. People 65 and older, as well as the very young (6 months to 4 years of age) and anyone who is immunosuppressed, are even more susceptible to serious complications from the flu. But do you really need to get a flu vaccine again this year? Why do I need to get vaccinated every year? A flu vaccine is needed every flu season for two reasons. First, your body’s immune response from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccine ensures optimal protection. Second, every flu season is different because flu viruses are constantly changing. New flu vaccines are released every year, since last year’s vaccine may not provide any immunity against this year’s viruses. After vaccination, your immune system produces antibodies that will protect you from the

viruses covered by this year’s vaccine. When should I get vaccinated? Seasonal flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, so you should get your vaccination as soon as vaccine becomes available – usually in September. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for you to develop antibodies against the virus, so it’s best to be vaccinated before influenza begins spreading in your community. Are there risks to getting the flu shot? Contrary to popular belief, the flu vaccine cannot give you the flu. However, there are mild side effects that can be associated with getting your flu shot. Soreness, redness or swelling in the arm where the shot was given, low-grade fever, and body aches can all occur, but are typically shortlived. In some years, the flu viruses used for the vaccine don’t match the viruses circulating during flu season, so it is still possible to get the flu, but the vaccine will likely still offer some protection and decrease the symptoms and severity of your bout with the flu.

Boost Your Energy! written by Lee Udell

Looking for ways to keep your energy up throughout the work day? Well, put down that energy drink, and consider these quick, easy and healthful ways to boost your energy levels – without the caffeine! F Sleep! Make sure you’re getting plenty of rest throughout the week. Experts recommend between 7 and 9 hours of sleep nightly, and even one night of inadequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your ability to focus and function cognitively. If you’re still battling the mid-afternoon urge to doze, consider a power nap. Just a quick 10-20 minutes of sleep can help you get through the day, without throwing off your nightly sleeping pattern. F Eat a smarter lunch. If your productivity drops off in the afternoon, take a closer look at what you’re eating for lunch. Complex carbs, such as whole grains, provide a glucose boost for your brain, while giving you the kind of energy that doesn’t result in a sugar high – and the ensuing crash. Fruits and vegetables are also smart choices, because they aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps your brain stay motivated and engaged. F Work out mid-day. Studies suggest that working out can actually increase productivity enough to counteract that time away from the office. So consider hitting the gym at lunchtime. If that’s not do-able, you

could still easily squeeze in a few desk stretches – or even a little yoga – that may give you the boost you need, while also reducing anxiety. F Drink some caffeine – but not too much. Six back-to-back cups of java is a recipe for instant crashmode. But one cup can be just right. Consuming more than 500 to 600 milligrams of caffeine per day can contribute to insomnia and lead to feelings of nervousness, restlessness and irritability, among others. What’s more, that extra afternoon cup of coffee might deliver an immediate jolt, but it could also be contributing to sleep problems which might affect productivity in the days to come. F Leave the desk. Get away from your office – for a quick walk or a long lunch – to help you reenergize and refocus. Spend a few minutes socializing. It’ll make you feel more positive and more awake and may even lead to a few laughs – a proven stress buster and energy booster, too. Maybe even take a stroll outdoors. A little fresh air and sunlight can boost serotonin levels, which improves mood and helps you sleep better. Just 15-20 minutes outside is enough to feel more alive!

Maintaining your energy level throughout a long work day can be difficult. But knowing a few tricks and tips can keep you from losing productivity and falling behind. Although you may not be able to take the afternoon off, you can surely afford 10-15 minutes to recharge yourself, no matter how hectic your life may be. And while a quick break may not be quite as invigorating as a week on a Caribbean beach, it can go a long way toward boosting your energy and your mood!

THINGS THAT ARE SCARY Colon Cancer doesn’t have to be scary. Timely screening for colon cancer means a

90% Prevention Rate.

EVERYONE 50+ NEEDS SCREENING

African Americans and those with family histories of colon cancer should be screened earlier (at 40-45 yrs).

Preventative screenings are largely covered by health insurance and Medicare. So,

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS,

because diagnostic colonoscopy (due to symptoms) carries higher costs! Don’t put it off any longer.

Screening For COLORECTAL CANCER Regular colorectal screening is one of the most powerful weapons against colorectal cancer. Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer – cancer which begins in the colon or rectum – is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women. Yet, thanks to an increase in those undergoing screening, the death rate of colorectal cancer has been dropping for several decades.

T

written by Lee Udell

oday, precancerous colorectal polyps – abnormal growths in the colon or rectum – are more often found by screening and removed before they can develop into cancers. It can take as many as 10 to 15 years for a polyp to develop into colorectal cancer. But, with regular screening, many cases of cancer can be prevented altogether, by finding and removing these polyps. What’s more, screening can help find colorectal cancer early, when it’s small and hasn’t spread. In the early stages, colorectal cancer is easier to treat, with a five-year survival rate of about 90%. Unfortunately, only about 4 out of 10 colorectal cancers are found at this early stage. And when cancer has already spread outside the colon or rectum, survival rates are markedly lower. Only a little more than half of those who should be tested for colorectal cancer actually get screened. Perhaps it’s because there’s a lack of public awareness of colorectal cancer, or maybe it’s because of concerns about cost and insurance coverage. (By the way, most insurers cover the cost of a colonoscopy under preventive care, and since you’ve probably already met your deductible this year, why not schedule your colonoscopy before the end of the year?) However, more than likely, it’s because colonoscopies have gotten a bad rap: after all, aren’t they uncomfortable, invasive, embarrassing and timeconsuming? Well, colonoscopies have come a long way, with preparation the day before not nearly as unpleasant as it once was, and the procedure itself performed under a light sedation, so you never feel a thing. So, if you’re turning 50 this year, you should be prepared to give yourself a special birthday present – a colonoscopy. While it may not be the way you expected to celebrate this milestone, consider the 50,000 reasons why you should – that’s the number of people who die each year from colorectal cancer. While newer screening tests are coming into use,

such as fecal occult blood tests or DNA stool tests, a colonoscopy still remains the gold standard. It is unquestionably the best screening tool available, and it’s the only one that also prevents potential cancers by allowing removal of polyps. Before you have your colonoscopy, here are a few things you should know: • Your doctor will instruct you on what to eat and how to empty your bowel prior to the colonoscopy. • During a colonoscopy, your doctor examines the lining of your entire colon to check for polyps or tumors. If polyps are found, they can be removed immediately and biopsied. A pathologist will provide a report to your doctor within a few days. • On the day of the colonoscopy, you will get medication to help you relax. Most people fall asleep and remember little, if anything, about the test when they wake up. • A long, thin, flexible tube, called a colonoscope, is inserted into your colon through the rectum. A tiny video and camera with a light on the end sends images to a video monitor. • Both men and women should have regular colonoscopies beginning at age 50, or sooner if there are additional risk factors, such as family history, lifestyle, or inflammatory bowel disease. • If you are experiencing bleeding, a change in frequency and characteristics of bowel movements, abdominal pain or unexplained fatigue, cramping or weight loss, see your gastroenterologist as soon as possible and discuss scheduling a colonoscopy. • Continue getting a colonoscopy every 10 years, or possibly more often, if you’ve had a polyp removed. The board-certified physicians at East Atlanta Gastroenterology in Conyers and Covington have over 70 years of combined experience in gastroenterology and digestive diseases. Menopause

M

written by Lee Udell

enopause is a natural and normal part of life for women. But each woman’s experience with menopause is unique. Some find it challenging, both physically and emotionally. And for women experiencing this mid-life change, there are both routine and complex needs for health care and a continuum of services. There are many different considerations for a woman approaching or going through menopause. This is the time in life when women stop having menstrual periods, and their child-bearing years come to a close. During perimenopause – the time of transition before menopause – a woman’s egg supply in her ovaries diminishes and ovulation become irregular. Production of estrogen and progesterone decreases, and these hormonal changes cause symptoms commonly associated with menopause, such as hot flashes. A gynecologist can help women deal with these symptoms and make the transition to menopause less stressful. Hormonal therapy – available as pills, pellets, or transdermal skin patches – can be used to replace the hormones no longer being produced. Non-hormonal treatments and alternative therapies can also be suggested by a gynecologist, to offer some relief from symptoms. A gynecologist can guide you in selecting the form of therapy that is most suitable for you. The choice will depend on your age, overall health, medical history, symptoms, and your individual preferences. Of course, a woman’s need for a gynecologist doesn’t end when she transitions through menopause. The keys to staying youthful, healthy and active after menopause are good nutrition, regular exercise, routine gynecological and complete physical check-ups, and regular mammograms. Women still need regular pelvic exams following menopause, because the risk of cancer increases with age. So early detection of certain cancers can be a life-saving move. During your pelvic exam, your gynecologist will look for signs of illness in organs,

38 HEALTHY IN ROCKDALE | FALL 2016

including the breasts, uterus, vagina, cervix, ovaries, bladder and rectum. Combining a Pap test – for cervical cancer – along with a human papillomavirus (HPV) test can possibly extend the interval between cervical cancer screenings from three years to five years, in many postmenopausal women. Still, even though you may not need a Pap test every year, you should still have an annual gynecological exam to protect your health. Other healthcare issues your gynecologist can help with include pelvic relaxation and incontinence, osteoporosis screening and treatment, and diet or weight-related concerns. If you’re looking for a gynecologist who is attuned to women’s menopausal and postmenopausal issues, Dr. Stephanie Gordon and Dr. Trent Rice at The Women’s Center provide a complete range of gynecological services, uniquely applied to suit your personal needs. Because their practice provides only gynecological, urogynecologic care and surgical care, you’ll never endure long office waits or frequent rescheduling typical of physicians providing obstetrical care. Dr. Gordon and Dr. Trent encourage all women to be active partners in the decision-making process and to be as well informed as possible about their healthcare. Schedule an appointment today at either their Conyers office – 678-413-4644 – or the Stockbridge office – 770-302-0878.
