4k isn’t just 4k...
All the info you need to make informed buying decisions 1
4k TV – the facts There are many versions of 4k TV products and accessories on the market, many giving very different results. We explain what is really important so you can make informed buying decisions. Then you can make sure the accessories you buy will work with the products you own – and give you the results you expect.
Compatibility There are a huge number of devices in the market that can generate video described as HD, UHD or 4k. For example, in the UK we have SKY Q, SKY +HD, Freesat HD, 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Sony Playstation and Xbox One X. Many have different resolution capabilities, such as 4096x2160, 3840x2160, 1080p, 1080i and so on. These numbers refer to how many picture elements (pixels) are used to generate the final image on the screen. More pixels mean more data is being sent and decoded by the TV.
How fast The faster these pixels are refreshed with new picture information, the more realistic and smooth the image appears, especially with faster moving images. These speed differences are described in the number of refreshes per second, using the engineering unit of frequency Hertz (Hz).
2
4k video might be viewed at 30Hz or 60Hz for example, but the TV may only be able to pass video at 30Hz (refreshed roughly 30 times a second). The TV and the source exchange information with each other via the HDMI cable, ensuring the source does not try and exceed the capability of the TV, using a system known as EDID. Broadcasters are now starting to use 60Hz refresh rates which means the image is refreshed 60 times a second – but also doubling the amount of data required when compared to 30Hz. To benefit from rates above 30Hz, a faster specification HDMI cable (and any associated accessories) will require a Multimedia Solutions™ Premium product (colour coded green), such as HDMI high speed cables with Ethernet. Red coded products are suitable for 30Hz TV.

i
On a 1080p TV, you get 1,920 pixels across, and 1,080 pixels top to bottom, which works out to over 2 million pixels on screen. At a resolution of 3,840 Ă— 2,160 a 4K Ultra HD (UHD) has 4x that. This yields over 8 million pixels!
3
Colours and HDR In addition to delivering four times the number of pixels of a standard 1080p TV, 4k also offers vast improvements in colour rendition and contrast.
How many colours With the introduction of Deep Colour (DC), or increasing the colour depth, the number of colours in the film content has increased from 16 million colours to in excess of 1.07 billion. These improvements are described with a three digit description. For example, DC is identified as 4:4:4 full colour. It is important to ensure that all parts of the system – the source, the HDMI cable(s), any accessories and the TV itself must support the higher standard for this function to work.
HDR & Deep Colour Many new 4k TVs also offer HDR which stands for High Dynamic Range. This significantly enhances picture quality of 4k sources recorded in this HDR format. Products such as Xbox One X and many Blu-ray movies offer HDR in addition to DC.
4
HDR Dynamic (HDR10) uses information embedded in the video data stream (known as metadata). This metadata permits the TV to process the video to actively enhance scene by scene. For example a flickering fire may have a brighter and more vibrant look with richer contrast.
How black and how white The latest 4K displays have enhanced screen capabilities with extra high contrast. This results in deeper blacks, brighter whites and increased brightness, expressed in the engineering term of ‘nits’. The more ‘nits’ the brighter the picture. Along with this is the introduction of HDR Static, Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dynamic HDR (HDR10). HDR is a metadata process which manipulates content to show brighter whites and darker blacks.

Sound and cables Audio advancements have developed from the very common Stereo Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) that replaced old technologies such as NICAM, to surround sound audio that provides a more immersive experience.
Digital sound
Choosing the right cable
There are various formats of surround sound audio, described with a two-digit code. The first number represents the number of speakers used for general sound. The second number follows a decimal point and this refers to supplementary speakers for further sound enhancement. These are generally sub-woofer speakers. So a 5.1Ch system will have centre, front left and right, and rear left and right speakers for the main audio sound track. There will also be a sub-woofer for extra bass sound. Larger systems may be referred to as 7.1Ch, 9.1Ch or Object Based Audio.
Unfortunately all this extra information requires a higher quality HDMI cable. Today most HDMI cables are described as “HDMI high speed with Ethernet 1.4”. Cables such as Multimedia Solutions™ HDMI with Ethernet 1.4 - Red Range are designed to support a maximum data rate of 10.2Gbps. With the introduction of HDR and Deep Colour, the required data rate has increased to 18Gbps. MMS Green accessories are designed to support this higher data rate.

The higher pixel density of a 4k panel also enable you get much closer without the grid-like structure of the image itself becoming visible. This means you can comfortably watch a much larger screen from the same seating position as your current Full HD TV.

Our colour coded products With so many variations of 4k in the market, it’s difficult to ensure your devices and cables will work together. Multimedia Solutions™ products take the guesswork out of 4k. These new HDMI extenders, cables and accessories are colour coded to help consumers make the right choices. It is recommended to use CAT6 HD BaseT™ approved cables.
