New to Solutions Group Congleton is Angie Tunstall. Angie has also participated in the product training programme available to Solutions Group staff and is now able to deal with customer enquiries quickly and effectively. Richard Parsons is the new face at Solutions Group, Woolwich.

Futuristic refurbishment for Sky Call Centre The first Sky Customer Contact Centre to be refurbished under the Sky CRM programme has been described by Sky executives as a ‘fundamental requirement providing a major investment in Sky people’. Sky Livingston 2 is now an ultra-modern and unique centre incorporating workstations which provide flat screen technology and a Sky digibox, with Sky channels presented as a window on the PC monitor to assist with viewing enquiries. Sky has claimed to have achieved its original brief which included creating an environment where people would enjoy going to work, where they would feel part of Sky and where they would want to go the extra mile for customers. An additional uninterrupted power supply (UPS) has ben integrated into the centre’s facilities to ensure a seamless service between agent and customer in the event of a power failure. Solutions Group Managing Director Grant Lester and Product Specialist Tom Carnie were recently invited to view the new facilities, which were officially opened on the 14th October 2001.

100

95

“It’s an astonishing step forward for digital satellite television”, said Grant Lester. “The attention to detail, particularly focusing on the needs of staff during working and training time, is the best I have ever seen! For the 500 or so people who work at Livingston2, it is anything but a traditional call centre.” Call centre teams and visitors experience a number of images projected on to the walls which provide bright reminders of Sky’s brand values and product innovation. Tom Carnie was particularly impressed with the computerised lighting system: “It offers subtle lighting changes throughout the day with over 1000 combinations of colours and intensities.” After following careful studies, Sky found that by linking lighting to employees workload, efficiency had been improved significantly, with staff comfort levels and job satisfaction reaching an all time high. “Overall, Sky have produced a world class service, which has received an outstanding response from its staff, customers and industry professionals”, continued Tom.

Richard comes from a background in installation maintenance and is keen to offer advice and technical support to riggers in the south London area. His enthusiasm for the industry has been developed through his experience as an engineer. Matt Reeves joins the accounts department at Headquarters and will be working alongside credit controller Louise Smith. Matt previously worked for a leading communications service provider where he gained in depth experience of group and account management.

Low cost coax cable now available

95

75

A new low cost version of the high performance coax cable CT100 from Raydex/ CDT is now available.

25

5

The new CS100 has a reduced copper content making it a cheaper option for more economical installations. The cable, which is BSkyB and RN approved, has the same dimension as the CT100, along with the reliable foil braid, which means riggers can use their existing “F” type twist on and crimp connectors.

0

It has similar specifications to CT100 including the return loss ratio, and is suitable for broadband satellite and TV transmission systems. Call your nearest Solutions Group depot to find out how you can make more savings on coax cable. UK manufacturer Allicraft has recently introduced a galvanised Cable Reel Holder to protect reels of cable and reduce the chances of it being damaged. The reel, which will hold any standard sized cable drum, allows cable to be dispensed easier and more efficiently.

Line powered solution for UHF and IF distribution

95

75

The recently launched head end amplifier from the Philips Switchline GII range has proved to be a popular option for installers requiring a low cost, cascadable solution for small and medium sized line powered systems.

25

The Amplifier 9244U can be used instead of the Amplifier 9444 where a maximum current of 2 Amps line power feeding is required. Whereas the existing Amplifier 9444 requires the use of one or more Amp 8331 Power Injectors to provide current for line power feeding, the new Amplifier 9244U has a 2 Amp line power feeding supply built into it as standard. This makes it the ideal choice where line power feeding requirements are low and unlikely to increase in the foreseeable future.

0

5

It covers the bandwidth 950-2150MHz and has a gain of 24-30dB (24 at 950MHz and 30 at 2150MHz). The unit's maximum output level is 114dBuV (2 Channels) and 102dBuV (30 channels). It has a noise figure of 10dB with an attenuation adjustment of 15dB (on each output). The LNB supply is 400mA and the physical layout of the unit is the same as the Amplifier 9444. For bigger systems the range has the ability to supply large collective housing. 120 points off a single headend amplifier (AMP94444) is easily achievable with 2 line amplifiers (AMP9853 ), 2 power supplies (AMP8331) and 10x12 output switches (SWI6512) with a 50-60 metre subscriber drop cable The range of GII equipment was designed with the specific requirements of the UK market in mind. MATV systems in the UK are typically fed from a single amplifier with one power supply. When the system is upgraded to IRS, adding additional power supplies can be expensive, but by using a line powered system, the overall cost of the installation can be considerably reduced. Digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) also played a major part in the development of Switchline GII. Up until now, most of the systems available had been designed to give an analogue terrestrial signal at the wall outlet of 60dBµV. However, because DTT signals are typically 20dB lower than analogue, the level required at the wall outlet for analogue is now closer to 70dBµV to give a digital level of around 50dBµV. Through the development of the GII range, Philips have been able to deliver good quality signals with a high output level. This is achieved by using active switches which have between 0 and +4 db gain as well as high output level capabilities. The terrestrial signal is kept separate from the satellite IF signal and is diplexed with the satellite signal in the switch, allowing better control of the UHF signal through the system. All the input levels to the switches can be individually adjusted with built in variable attenuators, giving maximum control over the output signal. Each switch then only requires to be fed from one tap value and the adjustment is achieved on the switch and not by graded taps.

The new cable reel holder will hold a drum of 250m cable such as CS100

The Switchline GII range offers high quality 5 and 9 input systems with a range of switch output option. It enables installers to choose the right product for each application and position the switches anywhere in the building not just where power is available. Long drop lengths can also be achieved due to the high output levels. For further details, contact Solutions Group on 01604 787888.

ITV signs deal with Sky Digital

New “F” type crimp connectors provide secure fixings

25

ITV has finally signed agreements with BSkyB for carriage of ITV1 and ITV2 on Sky Digital.

A new range of high quality “F” type crimp connectors for CT100, WF100, CS 100 and similar sized cables are now available to riggers from Solutions Group.

95

5

ITV1 was launched on the 21st November on digital satellite with 16 regional services, comprising each of the 14 ITV regions and separate services for Border England and Border Scotland and for HTV Wales and HTV West. A Conditional Access (CA) agreement means that ITV1 will be available to all satellite viewers, with the main service in each region available on the Sky Digital Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) on channel 103. Viewers who usually receive more than one regional service can find the other services on 963 to 964.

0

ITV2 is also now available on channel 226. Carriage on Sky Digital will increase ITV2's distribution by over 150%. Stuart Prebble, ITV Chief Executive said: “This is good news for satellite viewers, who will be able to watch ITV1 and ITV2 through the Sky Digital EPG with digital quality pictures and full programme information. It's also good for ITV, which benefits from the “digital dividend” which we receive for encouraging digital viewing. Over time ITV will also benefit from revenues from interactive programming and advertising. “I'm delighted that ITV2 will now be available to the majority of multi-channel viewers. The channel is already a growth story, and this dramatic increase in distribution will allow it to realise its potential. In this competitive multichannel world this deal will increase both the distribution and visibility of our channels.”

The range consists of two connectors which provide an alternative to the traditional twist-on ones and are general-purpose, making them suitable for permanent and secure connections in all types of applications. The first has a deep thread for secure fixing to the mating “F” type socket and a broad flanged nut for ease of tightening. Cables can be easily and correctly prepared using a suitable coaxial cable stripping tool. It is then a simple matter of pushing on the connector, until the dielectric is flush with the inner face of the connector, and crimping with a suitable crimping tool. The result is a very professional looking, secure and high performance connection that

will give many years of reliable service, even in situations where connections are disconnected and reconnected on a regular basis.

95

75

25

5

0

The second connector is also of the same high quality and functionality but has the added benefit of an internal “O” ring, providing moisture proof connections. This gives added protection to connections exposed to possible moisture ingress such as equipment housed within external equipment cabinets or “F” connector equipped masthead amplifiers. Whilst connections exposed to the elements, such as LNB connections, should continue to be protected by means of self amalgamating tape, the use of the moisture barrier “F” connectors will provide a second line of defence against possible moisture ingress.

Labgear provide digilink for remote rooms The new digital satellite remote control extender by Labgear is now available from Solutions Group. The infra-red Digilink is an economical and discreet option for those customers wanting to control a Sky Digibox from another room. No base unit is needed and the digilink works directly via the RF-OUT 2 connector on the Digibox. In a Digilink equipped system, RF-OUT 2 of the Digibox must connect directly to the Labgear distribution unit, in other words the Digibox must be the last item in the UHF loop-through chain.

The DaTuM 10 is “best in its class”

100

95

Features that were once the reserve of much more expensive Spectrum Analysers have finally been incorporated into a professional handheld meter.

From the installers viewpoint, revisiting a system that was installed some time ago, can be extremely costly to an otherwise profitable enterprise.

The new DaTuM 10 from Unaohm is capable of measuring both digital and analogue signals . It’s simplistic design and user friendly functions means you can achieve the accuracy needed for the successful installation of DTT

Not only does the DaTuM 10 measure these parameters with ease but it has the added benefit of a 'Spectrum Mode' allowing the entire frequency band to be shown on the large LCD panel.

75

Consumers demand a high quality service from their digital set top box or DTT TV and this can only be guaranteed when the digital signal is tested and proven to be of suitable Digital Carrier Power, Carrier to Noise ratio and Bit Error Ratio.

25

5

0

The specification does not end there. The DaTuM 10 will also measure Analogue UHF signals in Level, Carrier to Noise Ratio, and Video to Audio Ratio. A unique feature to the DaTuM 10 is the ' 7 Adjacent' and '7

Programme' modes. The ‘7 Adjacent’ mode allows the user to view +/- 3 channels of the selected channel, whereas the ‘7 Programme’ mode is programmable and can show any 7 channels, irrespective of the location in the band, on the screen simultaneously. A feature that will make setting digital head ends an easier proposition. Don’t settle for a lesser test instrument that merely guesses the signal’s strength. With the DaTuM 10 at only £399 (excluding VAT), you can now test signals with confidence. Contact Solutions Group on 01604 787888 for more details or call into your local depot.

Changes for ITV Digital installers and Retailers

75

A new pricing structure and other important changes have been introduced by Service provider ITV Digital in an attempt to increase the number of viewers further following the success of its advertising campaign featuring Al the monkey.

25

5

0

As part of their commitment to bring customers the best possible TV entertainment, Discovery Channel has now joined ITV Digital’s primary channel line-up, replacing Discovery Kids and Discovery wings. A new entry price point for ITV Digital pay monthly customers has also been set. The two new Primary channel options include any 6 available Primary channels for £12 per month or all available Primary channels for £14 per month. ITV Digital has acknowledged that pre-paid customers have difficulty in choosing which 6 Primary channels they would like to watch.

The Standard Aerial Upgrade fee has also been reduced from £40 to £25.

Therefore, this option has been replaced by a new pre-paid product offering customers all available Primary channels for 12 months. On the first of November ITV Digital also introduced a £25 one-off connection fee on all products. For pay monthly customers, this connection fee will be taken with their first months direct debit payment. For pre-paid customers, this connection fee will be added to the pre-paid box price and paid in-store.

ITV Digital has advised that the current Customer Agreement and in store customer leaflets should be replaced with the revised leaflets.

75

25

5

0

For more information on these changes you can call the Retail Support Centre at ITV Digital on 0870 600 5656 or call into any Solutions Group depot.

A new customer referrals policy has been initiated which requires a £50 refundable deposit from customers who are not able to confirm their residential status when they purchase a pay monthly product. This has been put in place to help administer its collection and replacement of faulty boxes, free of charge. Digital TV offer of ‘6 Primary channels free for 6 months’ has been removed and any Digital TV customer can now sign up to ITV Digital channels and services as a pay monthly subscriber. It is just a case of filling out the pay monthly Customer Agreement and following the steps for digital TV.

Two types of filter are available, SF4 for channels contained in Band 4 (Ch 21 to 37) and SF5 for Band 5 channels (Ch 38 to 68). The filters can either be adjusted on site, using a suitable Field Strength Analyser, or alternatively Solutions Group can adjust them for you, according to your specifications prior to despatch. The filters can be adjusted to stop either 1 or 2 channels as required. Attenuation on 1 channel is 30dB and 20dB on two channels.

I have been asked to install a Sky Digibox in a Health Club but the TV to which it is to be connected is 60 metres from where the box is going. I’m going to use CT100 cable but I’m concerned about the loss on the cable. Is there a simple way to amplify the signal? T Bishop, Wolverhampton

A

On 60 metres of CT100 cable, and assuming you set the Digibox output to channel 68, you would have approximately 12dB of loss between the Digibox and the TV. As the Digibox RF output is approximately 65dBuV you would end up with a very grainy picture on the TV. One option is to use a 12dB gain pre-amplifier, such as a Fracarro MP45, in conjunction with suitable connectors, such as “F” female to “TV” female adapter, “F” male to male adapter 45A F and “F” female to “F” female. By utilising the RF2 DC power as well, this problem can be overcome. This will give an output level of approximately 79dBuV from the Digibox which, when taking into account the cable loss, will give a level of 67dBuV at the TV. This will give an acceptable picture quality.

Q

Having tried to align a SKY digi dish using my meter, I’m getting a lock on my meter but no channels on the SKY digibox. Please tell me how this can happen. C Blake, Southampton

I came across ASTRA 1D at 24.2deg east. I had to look twice to make sure that I wasn't on ASTRA 2 at 28.2deg east. Without careful attention you would think you were on 28.2. The transponders that are active on 1D are of the same frequency as that of ASTRA 2D at 28.2east. Please see below. 10.714H 10.743H 22000 5/6 10.772 H ASTRA 1D analogue test card. 10.863H 22000 7/8 11.716H 27500 3/4 11.754H 27500 3/4 11.794H 27500 3/4 11.833H 27500 3/4 11.872H 27500 3/4 11.914H 27500 3/4 11.948H 27500 3/4 11.992H 27500 3/4 12.025H 27500 3/4

Q

I have a hotel owner in Shropshire who does not want his Welsh channel S4C to be distributed to each room. As this is a channel that he receives from his normal aerial, is there any way in which I can prevent this signal from getting into the distribution system? It is not practical to remove this channel from each TV set. S Connor, Hereford

As you can see horizontal low band is very much the same as 28.2deg east. The FEC on Unaohm meters are auto detecting and it would be possible without thinking to actually align on 24.2east if you were in horizontal low band and not realise that your FEC is actually 3/4. It is very easy to ignore the FEC when we are looking for ASTRA 2 because we do it all the time.

S4C is most likely to be transmitting from Moel-y-Parc. Once this has been confirmed, and once the channel number has been identified, it is a simple matter of putting a 'Channel Stop' filter into the aerial lead. The filter needs to be adjusted to stop the channel in question only which will prevent it from entering the distribution system.

From the information given I suspect that there are too many devices connected to the telephone line. BT lines have a restriction on the number of devices that can be connected to them simultaneously. The restriction relates to a maximum REN (Ringer Equivalence Number) of 4. Each device connected to the line has a specific REN number, and it is the total of these that must not add up to more than 4. The REN for a particular device should be stated on that device. The length of the line, in other words the distance from the telephone exchange to the customers premises, will also have an effect upon the number of simultaneous devices, so whilst a total REN of 6 may work in one location a REN of 5 will not work at another. If this is the case, then the customer will have to disconnect one of their other devices in order for the digibox not to have an effect. If the customer has signed the agreement with BIB Marketing then it is a requirement that the digibox remains connected to a telephone line for a minimum of 12 months from the date of installation.

Apparently she says that people get the normal ringing tone but her telephone does not ring. Somebody suggested that she unplug the digibox, which she did, and the phone now works fine. I have been back to the customer and changed the digibox but the same thing happens. As soon as the digibox is disconnected all of the other phones and the answering machine etc work fine. is offered at a low £44.50 trade price (ex VAT). The 5 input V51-106 has 3 UHF inputs, plus FM and DAB. With 47dB gain and a high 120dBµV maximum out, it offers excellent value at £61.00 trade price (ex VAT). This model also employs push-pull technology for low distortion and excellent linearity especially for digital signals. Both models also have variable level controls for each input.

Vision, the brand new product range which takes a fresh look at the electronic components that make IRS, MATV and SMATV systems, has taken the industry by storm since its launch in November. This unique and exciting range has been designed specifically for the serious professional installer who requires 'high quality, solid engineering and simple uncluttered design for reliable performance and incredible value'. Here UK Product Manager Richard Stallworthy explains the features unique to the Vision range. To launch a product range successfully, it must offer the industry something different, providing professionals with additional benefits and new solutions. Vision is just that. It takes a completely fresh look at products for the whole systems market. The Vision range has been built with special attention paid to digital performance in MATV, SMATV and IRS systems. Much of the equipment on today's market was developed before the digital TV and radio age and has not moved with the times. Vision products have also been designed with a higher mechanical and electrical specification for systems use where reliability and performance are paramount. With a range of dishes, aerials, masthead devices, MATV/ IRS amplifiers, CATV amplifiers and IRS multi-switches, the systems installer can be confident he is using the best available equipment. For example, most antennas used today on systems are domestic models which are not necessarily robust enough to be relied upon for long-term provision of signals to multiple dwellings. The Vision range of aerials are built with more substantial materials like the 18mm magnesium/aluminium boom for extra rigidity and the 5mm wire rod elements, which give lower wind loading, yet are strong enough to withstand birds using the aerial as a launch pad.

The added benefit of wire rod-sets is that if they do accidentally get bent during installation they can be straightened easily unlike tubular or profiled strip elements.

primarily designed for systems use but the more professional domestic installer will realise they are rugged models ideal for motorised systems as well. There is also a 200 extra LNB bracket ideal for multi satellite reception. Vision dishes come individually boxed for easy transportation and storage.

The MATV and CATV engineer can choose from 10 models of amplifier designed around digital TV. With features such as inter-stage level controls (V51-104), push-pull amplifier designs and high level screening, the Vision range of amplifiers can provide models for all situations.

These rod elements are staked into the boom using a patented process so that they are permanently fixed and cannot come out. Most domestic aerial elements are clipped, screwed or riveted onto the boom, which risks the element becoming detached after a while and thus degrading the performance. Vision aerials come in 13,19, 27 and 48 elements with large reflectors and hot dip galvanised clamps for long life. All Vision aerials have a balun for excellent cable matching and come with a choice of either a saddle & clamp or an “F” connector. Junction boxes on the Vision aerials are designed to face downwards so that any moisture falls away from the cable connector. The IRS installer is catered for with the 2 steel pole mount dishes which have heavy galvanised brackets and a double rim to keep the dish profile in shape. These dishes come in 85cm and 1.0m sizes in a dark grey finish. They are

The outdoor housing is specially designed to be ventilated thus avoiding the build up of condensation or moisture ingress and works on the principle of “what goes in must be able to come out”.

The Vision range also includes some very high quality masthead amplifiers (V20 range) and frequency combiners. Special attention has been paid to screening for digital TV with the use of fully screened, precision die-cast modules with “F” connectors, mounted in a very high quality weatherproof plastic housing. This weatherproof housing is designed in one piece with a latched door to prevent installers accidentally dropping parts off the ladder.

Most apartment blocks in the UK only have around 8, 10 or 12 flats and the V52-100 with its 2 outputs, inter-stage level control and split band VHF/UHF amplification, can easily provide signal in systems of this size. It is also fully screened with 13/26dB gain and 105dBuV maximum output, so with a trade price of £9.99 (ex-VAT), it undoubtedly offers exceptional value. Installers are always looking for value when costing installations. Most installations require at least FM and UHF, which need combining. But now it is becoming common to have DAB radio and security cameras specified on systems as well. The new V51-105 and V51-106 offer multi-input amplifiers at very competitive prices. The V51-105, a 4 input amplifier with FM, DAB and 2 UHF inputs, 34dB gain and 115dBµV

At the top of the range is the superb V50-100 CATV amplifier for larger systems and networks. This highly specified amplifier uses Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) output devices in a push-pull configuration for super linearity and low noise. The V50-100 can be configured for reversepath operation, which is ideal in hotel and cable TV applications that demand active or passive circuitry. A complete range of internal modules can be specified including diplexers, preamplifiers, inter-stage level controls and input and output splitters. The V50 line up also offers mains or line-powered options. The diecast case ensures superb screening as well as excellent weather protection to IP64 rating.

V50-101

All Vision amplifiers are fully screened and use the highest quality SMD components for reliability and stability. In all cases the power supply is in a separate section, away from the screened amplifier to minimise interference and impulse noise. Mains and DC powered 5 input SAT/TV amplifiers for 5 wire IRS systems have also been included in the range. The V55-100 and V55-101 employ push-pull amplifiers and inter-stage level controls as specified for digital applications. Both models

have built in satellite slope and adjustable gain for satellite and terrestrial signals. The V55-100 is designed to power a quattro LNB and the line powered V55-101 when used as a repeater amplifier.

95

Line amplifiers (V60 range), active splitters (V70 range) and 5 x 8, 5 x 12 and 5 x 16 multiswitches (V75 range) are also part of the extensive product line up. The 12 and 16 way multi-switches have input level controls on the satellite inputs to enable equalisation of signals from each polarity and frequency band.

The range would not be complete without a choice of modulators for SMATV and security applications. The V40-102 VSB modulator comes in a modular format so that the engineer has the flexibility to build a system to suit his needs. Because each modulator is fully agile and employs a SAW filter it can be used in systems where adjacent channel operation is required. The V40 range also includes a power supply, mounting rack and remote control which are required to complete the installation. If it's a budget cost effective modulator you are looking for then the V40-104 offers remarkable value. This stand-alone unit, with integral PSU, has a LED digital display for setting the required channel and level parameters. This model can be set up easily and can be locked against unauthorised setting. It employs a nonvolatile memory should there be a power cut. The V40-104 is fully agile between channels 21 and 68 and has RF loop through so that a number of channels can be combined. This high quality unit uses DSB modulation and at a trade price of £32.30 (ex VAT), it’s certainly a cost effective solution for smaller systems. The Vision range currently consists of around 40 models for professional use and will grow over the coming year so its well worth checking out each product for specification and value. The range is available from Solutions Group and all good aerial system wholesalers. Visit www.vision-products.co.uk for more information or call 01604 787888. You can also see Vision at the Riggers Digest Training Show.

It has generated a comprehensive range of user friendly products tailored to a wide variety of applications. From the standard 'Eye' through to the ever-popular 2, 4 & 7 way distribution amplifiers and the 4 & 8 way Loft boxes, the range of products offers a simple and cost effective solution to any distribution requirement.

Global Communications have recently catapulted the TV Link Eye system in to a new era. The first step was the introduction of two new products, the 'Amp Adder' and the 'Plus Combiner'. The 'Amp Adder', like so many of Global's products, is a very simple but effective idea. It is ideally suited to the situation where an existing distribution amplifier has run out of capacity, or a further amplifier is needed in another part of the distribution system. The unit fits between an output of the existing amplifier and the input of the second amplifier. It passes DC to power the TV Link Eyes, the RF signals and the data stream from the TV Link Eye back to the digibox. To avoid overloading the amplifiers, or the connected receivers, the unit ensures a 'unity gain' to the RF signal. The second product is another very simple but effective solution for those installations having both a standard Sky Digibox and Sky+ box in the same installation.

The unit combines the RF2 outputs from the two boxes and allows them to be sent along a single cable to a single TV Link Eye. By using the appropriate remote control at the TV Link Eye end it is then possible to control each box independently.

95

75

25

5

0

The 'Second RF Outlet Power' needs to be turned ON in each box, one supply being used to power the 'Plus Combiner, the other powering the TV Link Eyes and line powered distribution amplifiers in the system. One box has its RF1 output connected to the main TV and the other is connected by SCART, with the aerial input and RF1 output on this box being left spare or, preferably, terminated in 75 ohms. At the remote receivers it is only a matter of selecting the appropriate channel on the TV and using the right remote control. More new and innovative products are also being launched by Global Communications as part of this initiative and will be reviewed in the next issue of Riggers Digest so watch this space. “You either get motorised systems, or you don’t.” True or false? According to Mark Bartlett at Solutions Group, Dorset, installing a motorised system has never been so straight forward and it’s not a case of ‘getting’ them, it’s just a case of using the right equipment and following a few simple steps.

0

1 Select your installation site carefully!!!! 2 There must be a clear line of sight between the required satellites and the entire surface of the dish. The line of sight must be free from obstructions, such as trees, roof tiles etc. 3 It is very important to make sure the mount is fixed to a perfectly vertical mast. Time spent measuring this accurately will save you hours later on. 4 Set the DiSEqC mount back to zero degrees by connecting the receiver to the mount. The receiver must be on for the mount to move. It’s easier to do this before fixing the H-H mount onto the mast. 5 Once you have done this, the mount should then be disconnected from the receiver. 6 Fit the H-H mount onto the mast and do the nuts up finger tight. 7 Use an inclonometer to set the H-H mount angle. See picture below.

9 Fit the dish on to the front of the H-H mount arm and tighten the nuts. The middle of the dish clamp must be lined up with the centre line on the H-H mount arm. See picture to the right. 10 Connect the LNB to a good quality meter, such as an EP314 from Unaohm or a handheld AD 70 meter. Firstly you will need to find Intelsat 707 at 1° west. See below for other suggested meter settings.

The sturdy SM2UNI works with DiSEqC 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 and is the only mount on the market which has east and west controls to allow you to align it using a meter rather than via the receiver. The SM2UNI is available in a motorised DiSEqC pack containing a 75cm or a 90cm dish, a 0.7dB universal LNB and a wall mount and can be purchased from all Solutions Group trade counters. The mount has a horizontal rotation range of 72°, covering the majority of satellite received in the UK. It also has the capacity to take a 110cm dish. The Inclomometer used was the new Inclisat from Fracarro. This piece of equipment is essential to ensure the angle of the mount is set correctly. It has a large, easy to read display but also incorporates a spirit level which can be used to ensure the mast is straight.

100

95

The EP314 from Unaohm was used in this installation because it has comprehensive satellite measurement capabilities, including COFDM and QPSK. It can also measure both digital and analogue signals. Another meter we recommend is the new AD70 handheld meter. This is a digital satellite meter and measures all parameters required for an accurate installation as well as fitting into the palm of your hand.

Are you the weakest link?

95

75

As a professional installer, it’s your job to explain to your customer why their digibox should be connected to their telephone line. Here, we remind you why making this connection is so important and why failing to keep them informed, can mean your customers are missing out on the full range of services.

25

One of the more important aspects of a digital satellite installation, but also one of the easiest to overlook, is the provision of a telephone connection to the Digibox. Correctly installed, the telephone connection creates interactivity between broadcaster and viewer. Pay per view events can be ordered with a press of a button. E-mails can be sent to and received from any account in the world. A bank account can be managed and shopping ordered. It's even possible to have a flutter on your favourite team without leaving your armchair. Where the telephone connection is

At first, the difference will go unnoticed, but eventually the consumer will discover that interactive services don't work. For example when the customer settles down on the sofa to book a film, or place a bet during a match they'll get an error message from the Digibox, which they may find confusing. In many cases, the customer will contact the installer to demand an explanation and a fix. By explaining fully the benefits created by the telephone connection, the problem, and it's potential for unnecessary service calls, can be avoided.

Where problems occur, a missed download perhaps, the situation can be remedied automatically. This ensures that the customer has all of the functionality available in the latest software version. Pay-per-view events are most easily activated through the telephone system. This includes watching Sky Box Office Movies and Premiership Plus pay per view events. Users can access the free Sky Active Email service without a PC or any PC experience. The Sky Digital remote control or the Sky Active infrared keyboard can control the easy to use system. Sky Active allows you to send and receive email and store up to 50 email addresses. Sky Active Home Shopping gives the user access to high street names from the comfort of their sofa, including travel, takeaway food, electrical goods, sports goods and a whole lot more. With Sky Active, your customers can do their banking through the TV 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Access their account, transfer money, check balances, pay bills and more. Safe in the knowledge their account information is secure. Sky Active betting service enables users to have a flutter while they watch sports events.

not installed correctly, none of those services are available. In some cases, the telephone lead supplied with the set-top box will reach an existing telephone socket. However, in many cases, an extension socket must be fitted. Provision of a suitable socket is the responsibility of the customer and not part of a standard installation. For the installer with the necessary tools and expertise, an opportunity exists to offer the customer a valuable extra service and make a little extra profit from the job.

100

95

Explain the benefits As with all things, it pays to make sure your customers get the full story about digital satellite. Recent research shows that some retailers are failing to explain the importance of the telephone connection to their customers. Consequently, some consumers will disconnect the line without realising the implications of their actions.

The telephone connection even provides benefits for the installer during the initial installation. Using auto callback to authorise the installation is significantly quicker than the manual report that must be made where the telephone line is not working.

With Sky News Active Voting, users can register their votes to current affairs and issues relating to the news as it happen. Once the appropriate button has been pressed, the viewer will receive confirmation that their vote has been registered.

To make explaining the benefits easier, we have compiled a list of facts and services that will help to convince your customers to stay connected.

Play Jam, Sky Gamester and Games in Sky Active are all available in the interactive menu. Register high scores or pay-to-play the best games on your Digibox.

Facts and Services The free Digibox offer from Sky saves your customers almost ÂŁ300. One of the contractual conditions of this offer is that the box is connected to the telephone line with the number quoted in the Sky contract in order to make sure that all services are activated. The connection doesn't cost the consumer a penny unless they choose to use a pay service. The telephone connection is used to ensure that the Digibox is running up-to-date software.

It might be somewhat obvious to say that it's a lot easier to find an old customer than it is to find a new one. However, that being said, a lot of independent satellite installers are missing many of the opportunities that old customers represent. One of those opportunities is in TV distribution and is directly linked, in more ways than one, to Sky Digital.

Business Links

It's rare these days to find a house that only has a single TV set. In fact, according to the UK Government web site 'National Statistics', the national average is closer to three. Where a home has a Sky Digital installation it's almost a natural progression for consumers to want the best value from that installation by having access to Sky on other TVs in their home. Sky+, the new PVR, has the capacity to display one channel whilst recording another. This requires the installation of a multiple output LNB and a second IF cable from the dish to the receiver. However, Sky+ offers independent installers the opportunity for more than just the installation of an extra cable and a Quad LNB when it is installed. Customers for this exciting new product invariably have an existing Sky receiver that can be recabled to a second location in the home, particularly now as Sky offers consumers the opportunity to have a second subscription at a reduced rate. The offer of reduced subscription for a second and subsequent receiver could, of itself, lead to increased business for the independent. Contact with previous, satisfied customers explaining the benefits of the offer can result in the installation of a more sophisticated system with extra receivers, Quad LNBs, extra cabling and so on. Secondary receivers mean much more than just the ability to watch one channel and record another. They mean that other family members can enjoy, independently, the whole range of Sky services from movies to interactive games, from e-mails to shopping without having to comply with someone else's timetable. In terms of increasing business the independent installer should not overlook the second RF output that all Sky receivers have. This allows televisions in other rooms to link back to a Sky TV source. The addition of a TV Link gives total control of the remote receiver to the viewer from wherever the second TV is located. Other manufacturers and products that can link televisions around the home to any Sky Digibox have joined Global's original TV Link, which has been on the market since Sky Digital first launched. For the consumer these systems, Sky+, multiple receivers and other products give more than just the ability to watch Sky programmes. They also enhance the independent control and enjoyment of all the benefits of digital satellite huge programme options, movies, sport, interactivity, digital text, email and much more from wherever they are in the home. For the installer these products give a wide range of opportunities to increase their business and not just with the sale of the product itself. Even the simplest of these units that extends the Digibox output to just one other TV, needs to be fitted correctly and offers an opportunity of extending the original installation with some quality cabling work. In addition there are more sophisticated units from a number of manufacturers offering controllable distribution of the Sky services all around the home. These can lead not only to substantial installation work but the sale of extra remote controls and other accessories.

Many consumers do not know about the possibilities of Sky+, multiple boxes and in-home distribution, neither do they fully understand their benefits. In addition the majority of Sky installations are still 'free' to the consumer and this makes them very resistant to the idea of paying 'extra' for a more flexible installation at the time of the initial sale. However, when they have had a little time to experience the vast range of programming and other services available through the Digibox they may well be more receptive to a marketing approach from their original installer. Finding new customers has never been easy and it has always been a good idea to make the most of the ones you have by keeping a database and maintaining contact. From signal distribution for multiple boxes to the control of a Digibox from another room multiple distribution offers the professional installer the possibility of new business with the best customer of all, an existing one.

Simple Measures Achieve Trouble-free Viewing

For those of you who are not so familiar with the complexities surrounding SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) distribution systems, Technical Engineer, Andy Bull, explains how it should be done properly. multiswitch. Top Tip: It sometimes makes more sense to use this option even if only four satellite channels are required because you then have a future upgrade path for the customer.

SMATV systems are primarily used in applications which require the distribution of a selection of satellite and terrestrial channels to a number of reception points, but where it is not possible or practical to install an aerial or satellite dish on every dwelling, such as a hotel or a leisure complex.

Before the signal reaches the multiswitch it may also need to be amplified which will be indicated by the signal level on your spectrum analyser.

This type of system begins with the reception antennas which will always include at least a satellite dish and a terrestrial television aerial for the local television channels. The nature of the system will also allow for the installation of FM and DAB antennas, as well as CCTV and other relevant channels such as a hotels own TV channel. The amount of channels required by the customer will determine which type of LNB to use. If only four satellite channels are required, a Quad LNB can be installed, but if your customer wishes to add more channels in the future, this LNB will need to be replaced. If more than four satellite channels are required then, a Quattro LNB should be used along with a suitable

The number of satellite receivers will need to correspond with the number of channels required. Once the satellite receivers have been tuned to the specified channels, the output of the receivers need to be equalised (balanced) and combined together with the terrestrial television signal. The output signals from the satellite receivers need to be allocated a UHF channel between 21 and 68. Each satellite receiver needs to be set to its own individual UHF channel, to avoid cross modulation. You must also avoid using the same channels as the terrestrial channels that you also want to distribute. It is important to know what UHF channels you

can use when you’re planning to distribute TV channels. In a perfect world we could put them anywhere, but in practice this is not the case. There is a rule which must be followed when planning which UHF channels can be used. The simplest way to make sure you follow this rule is to remember that you cannot put channels 1, 5 and 9 above or below the channel you wish to use. This means that if you want to set the output on your Sky Digibox to channel 40, you could not put another signal on 39, 35, 31, 41, 45 and 49. If you were to look at the output from a digibox on a spectrum analyser, you would see the main carrier on the UHF channel the box is set to and the weaker, duplicated signals on + & 1,5, and 9 channels away from it. The graph below demonstrate the typical output of a basic modulator. In order to avoid clashing with the side bands from the modulator of a receiver, it is important that you carefully plan which channels to use.

The channels available are 21-68, but to find out which ones you can use, the first thing you need to do is identify the terrestrial television channels you want to distribute because these can not be used. Remember that you also cannot use the + and - 1, 5 and 9 channels. It is also important not to forget about DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) multiplexes. With these you only need to leave out the channel they broadcast on, not the + and - 1,5, and 9 channels. Also take into consideration any unwanted channels from nearby transmitters. Assuming that their power is not enough to cause strong interference, leave out only the channel they broadcast on. Once you have gone through this process of eliminating channels, a number of odd and even channels will be left. These are the channels that can be used, but you can only use all odd or all even, you cannot mix them up. Below is a channel plan for the Sandy Heath transmitter showing which channels are available to use once the others have been eliminated. The analogue channels which can’t be used are in green and the digital channels which can’t be used are in blue. Unwanted channels which may cause interference (in this case from Waltham) are in red and + and - 1, 5, 9 channels that can’t be used are in orange. (Channel 40 is also a digital channel).

24 28 32 36 40 44 48 52 56 60 64 68

As you can see from the table, you are left with thirteen odd channels and six even channels: ODD = 65, 63, 61, 59, 57, 55, 53, 51, 49, 47, 41, 37, 35. EVEN = 64, 60, 58, 54, 52, 50.

If you were installing a SMATV system using the Sandy Heath transmitter and you wanted to distribute 6 Sky Digital channels, the table above indicates which channels you could use for the satellite channels (indicated in purple).

If you were to eliminate all the even numbers, there would still be room to add more channels in the future.

95

If you use a wideband equaliser/combiner then this will allow you to balance all the satellite channels to the same level. This will give you one output which you then need to combine again with the terrestrial television channels and then feed into a launch amplifier, which connects to your distribution system. The only concern with doing it this way is that the equaliser/combiner does not filter out any mess that comes out of the UHF output (modulator), so when the signal gets to the amplifier it amplifies the mess as well as the required channels which can result in poor pictures.

When you have decided which UHF channels you can use, you need to decide how you wish to extract these from the receiver. You can use the UHF output from the satellite receiver (TV output), but the stability of the modulator in the satellite receiver may be questionable and result in frequency drift. Alternatively you could take the AV output of the box, for example SCART, and then modulate it (convert it to a UHF channel), which should ensure that the channel does not drift. Now you have all these channels, you can use either a wideband equaliser/combiner or a channelised filter/amplifier.

Tune in to our frequency conversion guide Some meters do not always allow you to enter the local oscillator of the LNB which means you can’t enter frequencies that are printed in many of the satellite publications. Here we show you how to convert the frequencies into MHz so you can easily identify channels you want to find. This guide is based on a universal LNB, but the same rules apply no matter which local oscillator is used. When using a universal LNB, the local oscillator will be 9.750 GHz for channels between 10.700GHz and 11.700GHz and 10.600GHz for channels between 11.700GHz and 12.750GHz. To find the frequency in MHz follow these simple steps.

LOW BAND 1. Take the frequency given in GHz of the required channel e.g. 11.242GHz (omit the decimal point to covert it in to MHz i.e. 11242MHz) 2.Take away the local oscillator from the

Low Band Revisited

Panasonic STB's with Channel Master (Cambridge) LNB's

Spot

In the Summer issue of Riggers Digest there were a number of Sky Spot articles referring to problems experienced by some installers with receivers having difficulty accessing channels in the Low Band. Each article highlighted a different way the problem could be experienced.

An occasional compatibility problem was identified with Panasonic Digiboxes installed with Channel Master (Cambridge) LNBs resulting in the LNB occasionally not switching to Low Band. A modification has been made to address the problem. Changing the LNB for a current production version of the same type will fix the problem. Alternatively, fitting a different compatible LNB will also give a resolution. Grundig LNB's

At the time that issue was published there were few channels being broadcast in the Low Band but now ITV, which began broadcasting on satellite during late November, is also a Low Band channel. On the principle that Low Band problems affecting ITV are more likely to generate customer calls, and also for the benefit of those installers that missed it, it might be worth while reiterating what was highlighted in the Summer issue. IRS Some communal Integrated Reception Systems, with only two distribution cables, normally carry only the High Band and cannot carry the Low without substantial remedial works.

A batch of Grundig LNB's was identified that sometimes fail to switch to Low Band when the receiver drops the 22kHz tone. The problem within the LNB has been identified and new deliveries of Grundig LNB's no longer exhibit the problem.

Other Digibox, LNB or Cable Faults

95

There may be occasions when a product failure or installation problem may cause a Low Band issue. Substitution of the suspect product or rectification of the install problem can identify these instances. It is always a good idea to try a test box prior to exchanging a customer's Digibox or outdoor unit including the LNB. Additionally, if the installed cable is not of an approved type it must be replaced.

75

25

Problems specific to any Band, whilst not especially prevalent, can be a source of frustration for customers. If only for this reason it is strongly recommended that installers check and ensure that all bands are being received before leaving site following an installation or service call. To assist in that process the following table has been prepared that shows one free to view or basic package channel in each of the four Bands.

External Interference Low Band interference can be caused by point to point microwave links. The problem is quite rare but, where it occurs, the solution is to reposition the dish so that it is no longer within the narrow corridor of interfering signal. The most effective place is somewhere that the bulk of the house can act as a filtering screen.

Special Report - Europe Online DVB PC card

95

Europe Online is one of many subscription based entertainment providers offering high speed Internet downloads via satellite.

75

All four of Europe Online's transponders on the ASTRA satellite fleet at 19.2° East have a guaranteed download speed of 2mbps. To receive downloads using their system, a DVB card needs to be installed into a PC, which is then connected to an 80cm dish and universal LNB (typical) aligned to ASTRA at 19.2°.

25

5

0

25

5

0

In addition to high speed downloads, the Europe Online DVB PC Card can also be used as a Free To Air digital satellite receiver, to access streaming TV, radio and offline email alerts. Scheduled downloads of files are offered, or alternatively a file fetch system can be accessed to select your own files for downloading. One of the main advantages of using this piece of hardware is that there are no phone charges as downloads operate via the satellite dish and are therefore offline (telephone). The comprehensive software that is supplied is user friendly and comes with an easy to follow installation manual. After signing up, a member will be given an email address, username@europeonline.com, which can be used with e-lert to inform the user offline that they have new email. This means the user doesn’t have to ‘dial-up’ to see if new mail has arrived. Scheduled downloads on offer include the likes of Microsoft Direct x driver updates, Grand Prix 3 demo, Sms and Photoshop 6 trial. Each day the files offered are updated with new information. The disadvantage in using the download centre is that you may have to wait several hours before your requested downloads are sent. Consumers often believe that 'high speed downloads via satellite' require no telephone connection. However, this is not the case with this type of service. The satellite communication is one way only. A modem, telephone line, and connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) are all still required. This is not a device for high speed 'web surfing', but is suited well to large and regular data downloads. It’s difficult to imagine what this PC card has to offer the installer business because Europe Online sells the package direct to users. However, installation of the hardware is not necessarily a D.I.Y job. The installation of a second LNB on to the standard Sky digital dish, aligned to 28.2 degrees, is not an option. A dedicated dish and LNB pointing at Astra 19.2 degrees is required. As this is the case it is obvious that there is a need for a dish to be installed with the cable run to the location of the PC which is usually not in the same location as the main TV. In addition, there is the requirement for the telephone point to be accessible to the PC, so again the installer's professional assistance is required.

100

However, fitting the DVB PC Card to the computer is not a straight forward process. It’s probably unlikely that many satellite installers will wish to dismantle their customer’s PC's to fit the card with the many variations of home computer around. Even where sufficient computer knowledge to confidently dismantle many hundreds of pounds worth of their customer's equipment is available.

Getting in shape

have a sufficiently narrow beamwidth to reject interfering signals from the adjacent satellites.

Ever known the real reason why a digidish is the shape it is?

It was said at the beginning of this article that some very lateral thinking was involved in the design of the Digidish and that's true. To achieve a narrow beamwidth, thereby avoiding interference from satellites on either side, the dish needs to be as wide as possible across its horizontal axis. But it doesn't need that size across the vertical axis because there are no satellites above or below the Clarke belt. Here's where the lateral thinking comes in. The dish can appear to be a different shape depending from where it's being viewed.

Spot

The main reason is related to a property shared by all antennas which is beamwidth. That, and some very lateral thinking on the part of the designers. Beamwidth could be described as the property of an antenna that allows it to reject signals from transmitters other than the one it is pointed at. Which is just another way of defining how directional the antenna is.

100

Dish antennas are very directional, they have a narrow beamwidth that makes them very efficient at rejecting interfering signals from other transmitters. The bigger the dish the narrower the beamwidth and more efficient the rejection is. Conversely, the smaller the dish the wider and less efficient the beamwidth.

Fig 1 View from satellite

View from front

95

75

25

5

The positions of broadcast satellites makes the beamwidth of the dish very important as the satellites are strung out along a single line in the sky, in geostationary orbit, in some places with less than three degrees separation. Where two adjacent satellites along this line broadcast across the same frequency range it is very important that dishes only receive signal from the satellite they are pointed at. They must

0

30 ISSUE 5

page 30 11 January 2002 15:03:26

To illustrate this point have a look at figure 1. This shows an older, analogue dish and illustrates why, when seen from the front, they were somewhat egg shaped. That shape, when viewed from the satellite, is seen as a circle. Figure 2 shows a similar illustration of a Digidish. When seen from the front, the dish is certainly wider than it is tall but when viewed from the

satellite, that difference is greatly enhanced and emphasises the importance of beamwidth on the overall design. This narrowing of the dish face also underlines the importance of ensuring the dish face is truly horizontal during final alignment.

Fig 2

View from satellite View from front

The elliptical shape of the Digidish reflector is matched by a specially shaped feedhorn on the LNB assembly. Underneath its plastic outer cover each feedhorn is matched to the dish shape. This is important not only to maximise the signal obtained from the required satellite and minimise interference from adjacent satellites but also to ensure that random interference in the form of sky and ground noise does not enter the system. One final point about the dish shape concerns a question that has often been asked. “Does the shape of the dish mean that it works better with horizontally polarised signals than it does with vertical?” The answer, of course, is no. Equal amounts of energy from both polarities are reflected from the surface no matter what the shape of the dish.

Riggerman to the Rescue!

During the course of my day, I receive a number of calls from installers requesting assistance with both installation and maintenance problems. The vast majority of these are dealt with quite simply and speedily. However, now and again, there are some problems which can tax even the most experienced... Some time ago I heard from an installer who had received a call from a new customer with a particularly odd problem. The installation had been carried out by the previous owner of the property, who had recently moved out. The fault was that the receiver in the bedroom only worked for approximately 3 minutes before the picture disappeared. This occurred on all channels and on whatever receiver was connected to that outlet. The installation was quite simple in that a separate aerial had been fitted, together with its own masthead amplifier, the masthead power unit being fitted in the loft.

Riggerman

Upon my arrival at the property there was no signal at the outlet, although a signal did appear soon after I entered the loft. Suspecting a poor connection I checked the exact wiring and made sure all the connections were correct. Nothing appeared to be wrong and the signal was now rock steady. The masthead amplifier power unit had been wired into the lighting circuit in the loft and appeared to be fine.

100

95

75

25

5

0

100

95

I then closed up the loft, switched off the landing light (which also controlled the loft light) and proceeded to clear up ready to leave. However approximately 3 minutes after leaving the loft the signal disappeared again! The cause? Switching off the loft light disconnected the masthead power supply, but due to the capacitance of the cables, together with the output smoothing capacitor in the power supply, voltage continued to be supplied to the masthead amplifier until such time as the capacitance had dischargeD (about 3 minutes).

75

Rewiring the masthead power supply into the correct mains wiring cleared the problem. Presumably the previous owner never switched the landing light off!
