How can you

compare the value

With so many tyre choices, what should you put on your vehicle when it’s time to replace them and how do you decide which tyre offers the best value for money? All passenger construction tyres, sold in the US, must by law have UTQG Ratings marked on the sidewall. Look at the sidewall of your tyres to see a Treadwear, Traction and Temperature Rating.

Treadwear The Treadwear Rating indicates a tyre’s wear rate. The higher the treadwear number, the longer it should take for the tread to wear down. A ‘standard’ control tyre is assigned a grade of 100. The Treadwear rating of all test tyres is compared to that of the ‘standard’ tyre. E.g. a treadwear rating of 200 should wear twice as long as the control tyre. Compare the original equipment (OE) tyre 225/65R17 on a Mazda CX 5 with an after-market Cooper CS5 tyre. The original equipment (OE) tyre comes with a treadwear rating of 280, where Cooper’s CS5 has a tread wear rating of 780, indicating that the CS5 could give you up to 2.8 times more mileage over the original equipment (OE) Mazda Tyre.

Traction The Traction Rating is an indication of a tyre’s ability to stop in the wet. A higher rating (the highest traction rating is AA) should allow your vehicle to stop sooner on wet roads.

Temperature The Temperature Rating indicates a tyre’s resistance to heat. Sustained high temperature can cause deterioration, leading to blowouts and tread separation. A higher rating (the highest traction rating is A) will resist higher temperatures.
