“As with all good products, the original Muller’s cart was created out of a need for something better.” The humble beginnings of the Smart Cart In 1975, Brigadier General Henry Muller of Santa Barbara in California realised that his 60 year old wife was struggling to man the wheelbarrow in their stable without back pain. Understanding how much his wife loved her horses, he set to designing and creating the first easy to use, lightweight, durable, well-balanced stable cart in the market which he called The Muller’s Stablemate. It became successful in the American market, was renamed ‘The Muller’s Smart Cart’ and is now made in Goreham, Maine. Four years ago, David Fortune’s wife purchased a Smart Cart having seen one belonging to a friend. He put it together for her and thought it was a fantastic product. Later, after discovering that his aged mother’s gardener was struggling to dispose of grass cuttings from her vast lawns, he decided to buy her one but discovered that they were no longer available in the UK. David ordered her Smart Cart directly from Maine and offered to be Muller’s Smart Carts’ new distributor in the UK. They appointed him and Smart Carts UK was born. What makes the Smart Cart so ‘smart’? “The carts are perfectly balanced, they are light, easily manoeuvrable and very little lifting is required. They’re also built to last decades – 20 to 30 years is not unusual. “The weight of the load in a Smart Cart in motion is balanced over the wheels. Unlike the traditional wheelbarrow design – with a single wheel at one end of the tub and lifting required on the other end – only a little leverage – not lifting of the Smart Cart – is necessary to move the centre of gravity over the wheels, making the cart ideal for those with mobility issues and back pain. Its pair of wheels makes it completely stable and controllable with one hand.

2

“Due to the materials used in a Smart Cart, they are known to last well over 25 years,” David continued. “Each product comes with a 5 year warranty, but the combination of the aircraft quality aluminium alloy frame, the steel cross member, axle and wheels and the exceptionally tough, high impact polyethylene of the tub makes the cart tough, light and virtually indestructible.” How can your Smart Cart transform your daily life? “Wherever you use the carts, whether in the garden, in the stable or on the farm, they are incredibly versatile. Rust resistant and leak free, whatever the season. A Smart Cart makes child’s play out of transporting your straw, hay, feed or heavy fertiliser from A to B. An easily connected tow bar is available to turn your cart into a trailer behind an ATV, even over rough ground. Fill it with ice, beer and wine and your summer party will go with a swing!

Drainage News

Gardeners will rejoice in this long-lasting wheelbarrow alternative. The great ‘tip forward’ design makes it simple to unload soil, grass cuttings and even paving stones. Originally designed specifically for stable work, the Smart Cart makes mucking out a pleasure it never used to be!” With huge capacity (7 and 12 cu ft options), two colours and wheel sizes (16” and 20” diameter) available, why not invest in a Smart Cart? In addition to the carts, see also the Easy Connect Towbar, Muck Caddy and Smart Water Cart. Company of Choice

The Best Labs Choose Leman Instruments Solutions UK is delighted to feature Leman Instruments SAS as it’s highly coveted Company of Choice. The family-ran company, which is headquartered in Archamps Technopole, France, specialises in the production and promotion of sophisticated scientific components used for solid, liquid and gas analysis. Specifically, it provides standard products, OEMs and custom designed realisation involving high purity Hydrogen (H2), Nitrogen (N2), Zero Air & combined solutions for FIDs, GCs, purge Air generations, CH4 & CO2 scrubbers, N2 and multi gas for LCMS. Despite being founded recently (in 2012), Leman Instruments has already secured itself a solid position in the industry as a leading European company specialising in the arena of high technology gas generators. Its dependable instruments have been extensively proven to decrease operational expenses and provide a solid return on investment (within the space of 18 months), and all devices are suitably fitted with high performance communication

In addition we commercialize a new line of large capacity including some up to 25l/min with a purity from 99% to 99,99999%, with the possibility of installing some H2 plants. Our N2 generators are going up to 250l/min with 99,999% adapted in system. This is perfect for semi-conductor industry for example. interfaces (RS485, Ethernet and WLAN options). The first-rate class of modules come with a multitude of advantages. As well as providing high pressure stability, the components can amplify the resolution and detection limits of instrumentation and have been designed to ensure easy installation and operation in the majority of laboratory, air quality monitoring and industrial environments. Alexander Berteletti, Sales & Business Development Manager at the company, was keen to discuss the superiority of these instruments in greater depth, “One of the major benefits of the generators is their maximised safety and conservationism,” he enthused. “They are the most compact of their kind, and they have the smallest footprint on the market with the highest possible efficiency and capacity. They are incredibly safe and eliminate the risk of a chemical reaction, particularly when using hydrogen. “Because we have strict internal quality control, our generators are on hand to make sure the components run properly. This is of great importance, especially since we insist that our generators are exactly what our customers required corresponding to the specifications mentioned in our data-sheet, maintaining guaranteed levels of purity. After listening to individual requests we can develop custom solutions together with the client, tailored for specific applications (and at competitive prices).”

ATEX approved, manual control dosing pumps Wanner International has introduced a range of Hydra-Cell, ATEX approved Dosing Performance Pumps with precise mechanical variator control, all mounted on a substantial stainless steel base plate. These seal-less pumps are designed for use in ATEX classified environments, coupled to compatible, explosion proof motors, completely removing the need for complex and costly external VFD ATEX control. Because Hydra-Cell pumps are true positive displacement pumps, flow rate is directly proportionate to input shaft speed and virtually independent of system discharge pressures. Very precise and repeatable, infinite

adjustment of shaft speed is achieved from almost zero rpm, through a simple manual adjust hand wheel on the variator. Flow rate is adjustable in operation and at rest and exhibits linear setting characteristics. Once set, the wheel can be locked to prevent the flow being changed, either by accident or deliberately. Meeting or exceeding API 675 performance requirements in terms of repeatability, linearity and steady state accuracy, Hydra-Cell Dosing Performance pumps are the low maintenance, highly efficient, low lifecycle cost option.

Leman Instruments is renowned for frequently introducing new products to the market. Its exclusive GC STATION 60L & GC STATION 60LC, a combined technology gas generator, is one of the company’s latest releases. The single unit integrates an inboard compressor and as a concept unlike any other currently offered in the marketplace, it has proven most successful with clients, who appreciate its simple practicality and function as a fully automated solution combining high purity hydrogen, zero air and nitrogen generators plus on board compressor on a computer tower size.

“Our aim is to keep on track with our company direction, introducing new products and increasing our presence in different markets,” Alexander summarised when asked to inform us of the organisation’s future plans. “Fundamentally, we always advance along with technology whilst keeping our customers close. We operate with maximum care and we believe that human contact is important – you won’t be put through to any automated hotlines whilst contacting Leman Instruments – we ensure to offer single customers direct support and are always happy to answer any questions they may have.”

Not forgetting to mention the remote control which is a fundamental asset from LEMAN INSTRUMENTS. It is in fact possible to control all of our generators via Internet (with safety/ security password or on private servers). This is a huge help for all type of Remote systems. Trees and Planning: Achieving the Potential Sometimes, when a possible development site has treerelated issues, developers are deterred. On other occasions, the temptation is to clear the site and create a blank canvas. May I suggest that there is a better way? Feasibility: Before spending money on surveys and plans, establish whether a development is feasible. There may be constraints with a site, or beyond, that make development unrealistic. These can include access, topography and the type and density of surrounding property. They are often challenges beyond your control as a land owner. Tree Constraints Plan: This assesses the trees on the site, and those within influencing distance around it. It identifies which trees contribute to the setting, and how. This exercise can identify trees that contribute to screening, or are focal features. It also informs which trees are suitable for retention; sometimes, prominent specimens lack sufficient vigour to remain. The Tree Constraints Plan informs the process. It indicates how much space each tree being retained. With this plan, I can work with clients to overcome challenges that may otherwise deter them from taking proposals forward. Working within the Root Protection Area: Planners often seek reassurance that, where trees are involved, they will not be detrimentally affected by a proposed development. There is a commonly held view that a tree’s roots spread evenly under its’ crown. Indeed, this is often used to calculate how much space a tree being retained should have within a development. It is inevitable, when space is limited, that some developments will involve encroachment the generally sacrosanct Root Protection Area. Sometimes, there are no roots present and proposals are more readily acceptable to the local planning authority. Where there are roots, I have a range of options which can help to reassure and ensure minimal damage. Tree Preservation Orders: Getting the

These have included inaccurate boundaries, vague descriptions of what is included, so that there is uncertainty regarding what is protected, and what is not, and the inclusion of ‘trees’ of questionable merit. There is a narrow window whereby the recipient of a new Tree Preservation Order can object to it, or raise concerns. Once this window has closed, it can prove difficult getting any changes in place.

All of our timber is tanalised to maximise the lifetime of your garden building.

All of the timber we use to build garden buildings is tanalised – this means that the timber has been impregnated with a preservative solution under high vacuum pressure in an industrial vessel. This treatment process ensures deep penetration into the timber cells, for a longer-lasting protective result against fungal decay and insect attack than the application of a surface coating. The duration of this protection ranges from 60 years for internal timbers and 30 years for external timbers such as exterior cladding. The treated timber initially assumes a green colouration, which fades to a honey brown over time and eventually a silver grey. No surface applied product is needed to maintain the integrity of the treatment.

You Can Always Object: Sometimes, the reason for refusal can be resolved, or may benefit from the impartial oversight of the appeals system. I encourage clients to explore this option, with a feasibility assessment. One client I have worked with wished to prune some trees that were encroaching the driveway to their home. Permission was refused due to concerns the work could affect local dormice. Structural Insulated Panel Manufacturer of the Year

Building fabric of the future Building Solutions UK is extremely proud to present SuperSIPs as its selected Structural Insulated Panel Manufacturer of the Year. An unrivalled knowledge and experience of the industry is what has set SuperSIPs aside from its competitors. The dynamic structural insulated panel manufacturer produce thermally efficient buildings in compliance with the new building regulations, through their three main services – Panel Only, Drawing Service and providing bespoke Complete Kits for Garden Offices/Studios, Houses and Commercial Buildings. 2015 was an extremely successful year for SuperSIPS. Exceeding their forecast for the year, the company increased its production and sales by 250%.

From the initial enquiry to completion, SuperSIPs provide everything you need to produce a thermally efficient building including the design, structural engineering, production, preparation, and delivery using all their own staff, equipment and transport. They can also help find On-Site Erection Crews or assist your chosen Builder, who may be new to SIPs. With over 50 years of experience in the Building Industry and almost 20 years’ experience in SIPs and associated industries, owners Leslie Crossley and Peter Clamp set up the company in 2011. It has since developed into a well-established company renowned for their high quality products and outstanding customer service.

“The demand for thermally efficient housing has resulted in a major increase for our company,” commented Owner Leslie Crossley. “We have introduced 5 new trucks and are currently working on a new production plant which will be operating 24/7. It is an honour to have received this prestigious company of the year award and we feel it is a testament to our hard work and dedication to providing an outstanding service.”

IV

“At SuperSIPs, we strive to provide the best,” explained Leslie. “With SIPs being suitable for such a wide variety of buildings, no job is too small or too large. We can help with the integration or combination of many complimentary products from Ground Source Heat Pumps to Under Floor Heating, from Mechanical Ventilation & Heat Recovery, to Solar Hot Water. SIPs provide the ideal Building Fabric for the incorporation of many energy and money saving products.” The SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels) are produced using a facing of OSB (oriented stranded board) with a filling of PUR (polyurethane) insulation. These panels

provide a labour and material-saving alternative to traditional timber frame or masonry construction. The insulation used in these panels is continuous and is not bridged by timber studs. This type of panel has been in use for over 60 years and they offer an energy efficient building system that substantially reduces on-site labour times and cost.

There is a wide range of panels to choose from, with thickness varying from 100mm to 250mm in 25mm increments, and U Values from 0.27w/m2k down to 0.10w/ m2k. Panels are produced to the client’s length thus saving on wastage and are made using 11mm OSB sheet, unlike competitors using 15mm, which means the thermal efficiency of these panels is greater due to more foam in all panels. SuperSIPs has recently completed extensive trails on a new Fire Proof SIPS with British Gypsum and, using their Glassrock Rigidur H, managed to achieve 59 minutes in a 30 minute Fire Test at a UKAS Test Centres. In addition to their advanced product range, SuperSIPs offer a full design and

engineering service and can custom build panels if required. RTA (ready to assemble) panels can be provided by pre-cutting rough openings, edges, angles, and other complex shapes which are then delivered to your site ready for installation. The company can also advise you and/ or your builder how to proceed with the construction. With SuperSIPs you can plan to meet, or exceed, current Building regulations and the amendments planned for 2016.

“Our products can be used to build just about anything,” concluded Leslie. “Our SIPs offer high levels of Thermal Performance, Air-Tightness and low levels of Waste; as well as speedy on-site erection and reduced construction costs. “In terms of the future, we have recently opened a new factory at Waldringfield in order to cater to the growing demand for our products and are currently seeking a new location and are looking at an 11 acres site. “As well as this, we are in negotiations with European partners to expand into Holland and Belgium. At SuperSIPs, our aim is to provide customers with the highest quality products at competitive prices, along with an exceptional level of customer service.” Contact T +44 (0)1473 736023 www.supersips.uk.com

Quality, advanced brickmaking Building Solutions UK is proud to present its highly prestigious and richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile to The Bulmer Brick and Tile Company. Sitting as it does on deep deposits of London Bed clay, our site has been a source for brick and tile making since at least the fifteenth century. By the nineteenth century it was making and supplying its wares to quality buildings and by way of the River Stour, finding outlets to London. Today our work is closely associated with the restoration and conservation of buildings countrywide; the emphasis being on producing bricks to match the original in all aspects, each brick and special being hand made from purpose made moulds, fired in one of our coal fired, down draught kilns that can create a myriad of colours and textures so necessary when matching early examples of brick. Our significant collection of purpose made moulds have all been made on site, from drawings, samples or just a

photograph and measurements; some copings turning the scales at over fifty kilograms, requiring at least two makers to fill the mould before then turning out the piece. Our clay seams offer a number of differing clays able to cater for the widening range we provide. We are able to dig clay that once ‘washed’ produces the highest quality red ‘Rubbers’ that match originals made within three miles of our site and supplied to St Pancras Station for its erection between 1868 – 1874. We were proud and delighted not only to make the Rubbers, but cut and rub them, supplying them to site ready to lay when St Pancras Station underwent it’s facelift in order to become the terminal for the Eurostar train service. By contrast, we have continued to supply a wide range of sizes and types to restore and conserve Henry VIII’s grand Palace at Hampton Court, a floor at Greenwich and bricks to numerous of his ‘houses’ around the countryside. His courtiers were to take up his love of building, and for a brief moment decorated their splendid buildings with the ‘new’ material, ‘Terracotta.’ For this they

The revival of this technique in the early nineteenth century with the coming of the ‘Gothic’ age saw its use over wide areas, particularly in civic buildings, banks, schools churches, smart town houses and shops. Amongst our moulds today, we still number many originals made and carved in the 1880’s expressly for this market and now coming out of retirement to restore and repair examples suffering the ravages of time. Wood plastic composite deck board advice The Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA) is urging specifiers and users of wood plastic composite deck boards (also known as wood polymer composite, wpc or composite) to do their research before committing to a product. The concern stems from a number of poor performance issues reported to the association which appear to be limited to a particular type of hollow core wpc boards. Installation errors were a feature in many cases although product quality issues remain in question. Concern has also arisen about new composite deckboards being installed over often unsuitable, existing substructures.

compliance with supplier guidance. Then if any issues do arise, the installation techniques cannot be held responsible. TDCA has issued guidance on how to build a timber substructure to support wpc boards and this is available free to download from its website – www.tda.org.uk/ publications. You can also contact TDCA if you need help with existing decking that is not performing to expectations on 01977 558147.

Wood plastic composite decking is a relatively new material in the UK. Broadly speaking, it is made from wood from sawdust mixed with virgin or waste plastics typically high density PE (polyethylene), PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) or PP (polypropylene). The overriding principle is to fully encapsulate the wood fibre particles with melted plastic to form a homogenous material. However, plastic and wood cannot easily be mixed. Manufacture is therefore not straightforward and requires careful handling. Any shortcuts can lead to disastrous results.

The brochure outlines key differences between real wood and wpc in relation to deck building: wpc does not have the same inherent strength as timber and joists will need to be positioned closer together. This should be taken into account when comparing costs of a wholly timber deck against one with wpc boards Unlike timber, wpc expands along its length. Therefore pay particular attention to the gapping advice given and be aware it may vary according to temperature/time of year.

With wpc decking, it is critical to review product credibility prior to selection and to install it in strict

Eastland Homes undertook the upgrade of Enerley Close two social housing blocks and successfully achieved the Enerphit Standard and have recently won the UK Passivhaus award. The project consisted of 32 maisonettes; the buildings were in poor repair with complaints from residents of damp, condensation and draughts.

Ultra Thin Vacuum Panel Insulation

Vacutherm’s VACUPOR vacuum insulation aided this project. VACUPOR is a vacuum insulated panel that is able to deliver excellent U-values using a minimum thickness, making it ideal for retrofit projects. VACUPOR was specified at Enerley Close as specifying a thicker material would have meant restricting headroom and doorways. The VACUPOR NT used at this project delivered a U-Value of 0.21W/m2k for just 30mm of thickness. The thermal conductivity as quoted on the product’s CE certificate is 0.007W/mK. “We supplied insulation to the ground floor of all the duplexes in both blocks and the panels were laid onto the existing concrete floors.” Previously, we had visited each of the flats and spoke with the tenants as was the whole ethos of the project, tenant liaison was a key objective for the whole site. This also gave us the opportunity to survey

each home and to provide a detailed AutoCAD allowing the installers to follow ensuring the panels were fitted in the correct positions. The panels had a foam underlay both beneath and over the top to afford some mechanical protection during installation. With a final floating floor fitted to complete the floor. We are delighted to have been a part of this successful project. The whole image of the area has changed beyond recognition it is now viewed as a desirable place to live and it looks beautiful. Anti-Slip Floor Treatment For over 30 years, SLIPSTOP, based at Coalville in Leicestershire has been helping to prevent slips and accidents in industry, commerce, leisure and even on luxurious cruise liners. Now the company is campaigning to prevent slippery ceramic tiled floors from being replaced in an effort to help the environment. Hundreds of thousands of square metres of flooring have already been treated by the company to make them anti-slip, thus preventing thousands of accidents to staff and members of the public. Slippery floors are the largest single cause of accidents and cost millions of pounds in claims every year. Yet many millions more are spent in replacing shiny glazed ceramic and porcelain floors when all that is required is a specialised application by SLIPSTOP. Don’t be too sure about your insurer!

SLIPSTOP was recently called in by a company that had to pay out tens of thousands of pounds for a slip accident, as its own insurance company refused to pay compensation because the problem had been highlighted in a previous Health and Safety Audit. SLIPSTOP was able to make the floor safe for less than £2,000 and since the treatment was carried out there has not been one single accident. For more information, contact SLIPSTOP on: +44 (0)1530 813500 or email at: info@slipstop.co.uk

Cut flowing screed drying times by over 50% Reduce the delays created by flowing screed drying times Force-Dry hire out a range of temporary electric boilers that can be connected into a buildings underfloor heating system providing essential heat long before the main plant facility is online. This enables the force drying process to begin as soon as possible after the screed has been poured. A typical 50mm flowing screed can now be force dried ready for floor covering application in less 50% of the natural drying time and in most cases, the process can be much quicker. The Force-Dry system can be connected directly into an underfloor heating manifold with no requirement for any other building pipework to be installed. The Force-Dry system was used to commission the screed and underfloor heating systems in a block of 170 new build apartments in Victoria, London. The main plant facilities for the building will not be online until later this year so using the Force-Dry system, the commission process was able to start in late April. The Force-Dry units are also being used on this site to heat test the apartments heating and hot water systems.

Upon completion of liquid screed floor installation, we were advised that we could not lay any floor tiles for a period of two months. This came as a shock and threw our completion date straight out of the window. Thankfully, Force-Dry came to the rescue and, liaised with our contractor and installed a 6kW electric boiler. From then on, the heating was carefully raised to an optimum flow temperature and then slowly reduced to complete the drying process. This was completed in three weeks. During this time, Force-Dry was in constant contact and overseeing the adjustments of the boiler in order to reach our goal. This also saved us a month’s rental which more than covered the cost of the boiler hire. We are now back on track with our completion date and looking forward to moving in to our new home.

Acoustics News

The UK’s professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration The Institute of Acoustics (IOA), which was formed in 1974, is a nominated body of the Engineering Council. It is an established professional association operating in the UK to tend to those working in acoustics, noise and vibration. IOA’s membership base comprises 3000 organisations. This impressive figure ensures there is a strong cross-fertilisation of ideas

and initiatives, as the members come from a rich diversity of backgrounds (with engineers, scientists, educators, lawyers, occupational hygienists, architects and environmental health officers within the mix). The group discuss all aspects of the acoustics umbrella, as their interests span all associated branches. This includes aerodynamics, architectural acoustics, building acoustics,

Leaders in Sound Masking innovation Sound Masking can achieve both speech privacy and relief from distracting sounds. Often for confidentiality, it’s imperative to obtain speech privacy. It can also be used to enable a workforce to concentrate without distraction, promoting increased productivity and less worker fatigue. When the background noise level is below the speech level, speech will be heard. However, by carefully increasing the background noise level the amount of speech being heard will be reduced. This applies equally as well to cellular offices, consulting rooms, open plan and other work areas. The skill is to increase the background level in an acceptable way whilst representing value for money. AET.GB Ltd has over the last 24 years offered such solutions. Although the basic principle is sound, it needs careful design, excellent products and most crucial of all, accurate commissioning. At AET.GB Ltd, we have achieved great success throughout Europe. By taking basic

white noise and modifying, processing and delivering it in a controlled way to multiple zones, we are able to offer the finest solutions. Our equipment is made in the UK to the highest standards and our attention to detail ensures the best result. A decade of engineering excellence The specialist mechanical engineering company is located in Slane, Ireland, and has enjoyed steady growth and achievement ever since its formation just over a decade ago. It status as an exceptional performer in the development and production of specialist mini track dumpers and peripherals for mini diggers and hedge cutters has only strengthened over the years, having gained itself a solid reputation in the mechanical engineering sector. The manufacturer of niche equipment is renowned for providing the finest industrial components, built in-house at its fully-equipped production facility. Its product range includes meticulously made track dumpers, hedge cutters, saw heads, plastic flails, swivel trims and steel wire brushes, and its refined services include one-off custom engineering duties, welding, machining, plasma cutting and fabrication. Specifically speaking, the distinguished selection includes the Slanetrac HC Hedge Trimmer attachments for mini diggers ranging from 1-7 ton, the Slanetrac HS55 Saw Head and Slanetrac RB45 Wire Brush attachments for mini diggers from 2.5-7 ton. Another notable innovation stocked is the Slanetrac HT1000 Mini Tracked Dumper, which can run on either petrol

or diesel and is purposefully designed to allow narrow access for open areas. When discussing the company’s continued success in the sector, Slanetrac’s Sales Co-ordinator Adrian Clarke said their accomplishments are a result of their effective promotional strategies and operational structures, “The significant progression we have experienced is largely due to getting the Slanetrac name out there effectively,” he explained. “We have managed to significantly increase our customer base by offering our services across all of the areas we operate in. “Essentially, nobody else in the industry offers what we can. Although it is admittedly a niche market, we stand out from our competitors because everything we do is completed in-house. All of the necessary processes (right from the build and design through to the manufacture and assembly) is done internally, so we have a great deal of expertise in all of these areas.” The established manufacturer, developer and producer of this particular mechanical engineering equipment can competently cater to the exact requirements of all clients involved in the plant works industry. It prides itself on efficiently undertaking all engineering-based

tasks in a capable and professional manner, serving customers such as end users and landscape gardeners. When discussing Slanetrac’s advances and plans for the next couple of years, Adrian was looking forward to diversifying into additional markets, “We have recently experienced further expansions by selling to more companies across some of the main European countries, including Australia, America, Russia, France and Holland,” he summarised. “In the near future we are looking to break into the Scandinavian market, and our main priority centres on the continuation of what we are doing in order to secure more sales.” The Slanetrac team consider it of great importance to attend trade shows and make it their priority to promote their services and products at industry-specific events in a bid to further gain custom and raise brand awareness. They have already appeared at LAMMA 2015 in January and INTERMAT Paris in April, and they are all set to attend the Executive Hire Show next year, which will be held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry from 10-11 February 2016. working in accordance with canines to combat terrorism, drug control and general wrongdoing. This partnership involves the expert training of military dogs, explosion detection dogs, drug detection dogs and general attack dogs.

One of the company’s most popular innovations is its ground-breaking GuardSafe system; fitted boxes slotted into the corners of a building, effectively monitoring four designated patrol routes. This particular invention acts to instantly alert organisations when a guard is onsite, providing customers with the knowledge that their building is being safely supervised around the clock. “GuardSafe is a unique patrol logging system which works in real time,” explained Acclaimed Security’s Managing Director Roy Unwin. “This means companies can have results within seconds – if there are any issues, they are flagged up immediately and dealt with accordingly. This is a vast difference to other businesses, whose results are typically provided after a much greater timespan – some can take as long as a month! We are proud to say that GuardSafe is a system exclusive to us; no-one else in the world has it.” Check-Call is another notable success; a service monitoring the performance of a guard on-duty by ringing them hourly and checking they aren’t asleep on the job. Tracking the officer’s exact movements via routine calls, mobile responses and periodic checks ensures that the staff are performing as they should be, and once the technology has pinpointed a

problem the Acclaimed Security supervisors will be on hand to assess the situation and act appropriately. The business, which is based in Leeds, was established in 2002 and has since secured status as one of the few Approved Contractors Scheme (ACS) approved businesses in the industry. Winning over 15 awards in the past couple of years alone and its extensive customer base (which comprises numerous industrial and commercial outlets and wellregarded blue-chip companies including Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds City Council, Freight Liner, Tarmac, Seabrook Crisps, Vion Foods, Brake Brothers and Liberty Living) is solid proof of the company’s incredible success in the security sector.

Rapid reconfiguration The Tube and Bracket Company designs and supplies modular Graphit solutions that are said to be easier to move and handle, allowing rapid reconfiguration of production line and storage systems. The ability to reconfigure and upgrade Graphit systems means operatives can quickly change the shape and function of storage units to suit new materials and work area layouts.

Developed to support lean manufacturing and cellular production, the modular Graphit system creates efficient, ergonomic and adaptable structures for displaying, storing and handling items in warehouses, factories or workshops. Structures can be optimised for the shape and size of items being handled and the specific space available. They can be adapted as often as required to maintain efficiency and make improvements. These benefits have ensured that modular systems are now widely used across the supply chain for moving, storing and handling.

Graphit enables solutions that provide muchneeded lightness and ease-of-handling when it comes to order preparation. The system’s modularity makes it easier to cope with varying customer volume profiles because installations can be dismantled, stored and rebuilt in response to seasonal business and workforce variations.

Excellence in Refractometry and Polarimetry Currently celebrating its centenary, Bellingham + Stanley is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of Refractometers and Polarimeters. Since 1915, the company has utilised their unrivalled expertise in optical engineering, electronics and software design to create instruments that are used extensively throughout the world’s food, drinks, pharmaceutical, chemical and petroleum industries.

of new products in the Live Lab area which deliver convenience to the lab. These include the new photoLab® 7600 spectrophotometer, which is equipped with OptRF that facilitates cost effective routine control of COD, NO3 and NO2 in wastewater, along with the TitroLine® 7800 Titrator that is ideal for research applications. These exciting new products received a fantastic response at the show.

Renowned for their excellence and innovation in the industry, Bellingham + Stanley equips these industries with the highest quality, most innovative instruments available. Set up by pioneers in the development of high quality optical instruments, Leonard Bellingham and Frank Stanley, the company to this day has stayed true to its original values to deliver ground breaking technology to benefit customers around the world. From the purpose-built manufacturing facility in Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom and Sales & Service Centre in Atlanta, USA, new designs continue to emerge and instruments are manufactured to the highest standards.

As part of Xylem, Bellingham + Stanley recently welcomed the life sciences division of YSI to its Tunbridge Wells facility so that UK customers will receive a better level of service from just one site. In January, YSI Life Sciences will also take part in IBioIC’s second annual conference at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, to present the 2900 Series of Biochemistry Analysers.

“At Bellingham + Stanley, we are dedicated to ensuring all our products include the highest possible robustness, reliability, precision and longevity,” commented Marketing Manager, Kevin Chapman. “Our instrumentation is supplied to over 80 countries around the World with many global companies considering our products to be the ultimate in quality and performance.”

Bellingham + Stanley attends many trade shows throughout the year. They will next be appearing at the Picton show in Atlanta, USA in March 2016 as well as Analytica in Munich in May 2016. The RFM900-T Series perfectly complements the ADP600 Series Polarimeters, which are available as single, dual and multiple wavelength derivatives that not only cover the visible spectrum, but are also capable of measuring optical rotation to four decimal places in the highly sensitive ultra-violet region. The pair are perfect for pharmaceutical applications as together they comply with all requirements.

“Every one of our instruments is individually inspected and our temperature-controlled test facility is dedicated to instrument calibration to ensure the highest possible accuracy,” explained Kevin. “Within the UK and USA we also offer preventative maintenance programs either at the customer premises or at our dedicated service centres for customers that require regular servicing of equipment.”

Bellingham + Stanley is represented extensively all over the world and supports an international customer base through its network of highly trained, recognised distributors. They have supplied exceptional products to many well-known brands including PepsiCo International, GSK, AstraZeneca, Nestle and Heinz, to name just a few. A notable product in the advanced range is the RFM900-T Series of high precision Peltier temperature controlled benchtop refractometers. Featuring a wide measuring range of up to 1.70 RI and new 7” touchscreen user interface, the range is ideally suited for use in applications within the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, flavours and fragrance industries as well as in academic research.

“Our dedicated team prides itself on offering a friendly and rapid response to customers.
