PSY-260:Project One Milestone Guidelines and Rubric As you learned in the Module Two Activity: Descriptive Statistics Quiz, thinking critically about your data and taking appropriate statistical approaches is what will enable you to perform the right calculations to draw appropriate conclusions. To prepare for Project One, in this milestone you will get to know your Project One data. This assignment will ensure that you are set up for success on your project, so make sure you review your instructor feedback thoroughly before submitting Project One, due in Module Four. Your textbook notes that scales (e.g., Likert-type scales) are often treated as if they are interval in applied statistics for
the psychological and social sciences. This is true, and, as noted in your text, it is an area of debate even among those who do statistics regularly in these areas. We will, on occasion and for instructional purposes, follow this practice; however, for this assignment we want you to provide the most technically correct responses for all of these items—not indicate how data might be treated in practice. In your textbook, you learned that as scales of measurement become more numeric in nature, you have more options for measures of central tendency and variability because you can perform more mathematical operations. As you respond to the prompt, we would like you to select the measures of central tendency or variability that require the most mathematical computation that is reasonable to report, given the scale of measurement. For example, if your data were interval or ratio, you can report a mode, a median, or a mean, but the mean would be the measure of central tendency that requires the most mathematical computation. Thus, we would want you to report “Mean” as the answer for a variable measured on such a scale.
Prompt For this milestone, you will submit a Word file. You will complete your milestone using your Soomo writing template and the data set provided in Soomo. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria: 1. Identify the scales of measurement for each variable. A. For the purpose of identifying scales of measurement, use (1) Nominal, (2) Ordinal, or (3) Interval and/or Ratio as accurately as possible. 2. Identify reasonable measures of central tendency, given the scales of measurement for each variable. A. For the purpose of identifying measures of central tendency, use (1) Mean, (2) Median, or (3) Mode. 3. Identify reasonable measures of variability, given the scales of measurement for each variable. A. For the purpose of identifying measures of variability, use (1) Range/Interquartile Range, (2) Standard Deviation/Variance, or (3) None. 4. Identify reasonable graphic depictions, given the scales of measurement for each variable. A. For the purpose of identifying graphic depictions, use (1) Bar/Pie or (2) Histogram. 5. Describe how these concepts intersect and why scales of measurement influence decisions about statistics and graphics. The length of your description must be about 4 to 7 sentences.
Competencies In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:
Interpret psychological data using quantitative and qualitative methods Apply the principles of statistical methods to inform a research problem
Scenario You work for a market research company that supplies information to non-profit organizations throughout the nation. Your supervisor has asked you to provide an objective description of the data that will provide information regarding how to target different audiences in ways that bring about empathy. Qualities of the Data Brief 1. Create a narrative based on communication best practices for a varied audience. Your data brief should demonstrate the following: A. Tells an accurate and persuasive story B. Presents sufficient logic C. Presents statistical findings to support claims
What to Submit To complete this project, you must submit the following: Data Brief You will use your Soomo writing template to complete the project and download it for submission. Your brief must be a minimum of 1 to 2 pages (not including graphs). Sources should be cited according to APA style.
PSY-260:1-2 Discussion: Data Literacy in Society First, introduce yourself to the class. Include your major and anything you would like to share about yourself. Then address the prompt below. As Marriott (2014) reviews the development of statistical thinking over the last century, he provides an interesting quotation from the 1950 address given by S.S. Wilks to the 110th Annual Meeting of the American Statistical Association, in which Wilks states, “Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write” (p. 79). Review the article, The Future of Statistical Thinking. Take a position. Is it true today that statistics are necessary in modern society? First, title your post either “Understanding Statistics Is Necessary to Be an Effective Citizen” or “Understanding Statistics Is NOT Necessary to Be an Effective Citizen.” For your initial post, address the following:
Make your case by persuasively supporting your position. Include at least one recent (within the past five years) scholarly source to support your position. Relate one of these programmatic course themes to your position about whether statistics are indispensable in modern society. You may want to review the Programmatic Themes document. o Social justice o Career connections
In your responses to your peers, consider how well they justified their positions, making use of available sources. Consider the following questions in your response posts:
Did they support their position convincingly using scholarly sources? Which of their points makes the most sense to you, even if you made a case for the opposing viewpoint? Post an article, video, or visual to reinforce a peer’s idea or challenge them to see their point from a different perspective.

PSY-260:Project Three Guidelines and Rubric Competencies In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:
Interpret psychological data using quantitative and qualitative methods Present psychological findings to academic and nonacademic audiences
Scenario For this project, you will be creating a data brief. Developing the data brief will challenge you to not only interpret data correctly, but then communicate your findings to a mixed audience made up of members of the scientific community and the general public. Telling a persuasive and accurate story from statistical findings is an important skill to add to your data literacy toolbox. Note: You do not need to perform any additional analyses or calculations. You only need to interpret and report the analyses that have been completed and create graphics as visual supplements for your data brief. Imagine you work as a research assistant in Washington, DC, at the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice is interested in issues related to race, discrimination, and policing. Your team has been given data and output from chi-square tests, and you are tasked with communicating the findings and possible implications directly to police departments. However, all the work you do is public and thus available to the media and community members, as well as to nonprofit organizations. As you weave together the story of this data, keep in mind that it will need to be written for multiple audiences and tell an accurate and persuasive story.
Directions For this project, you will submit a data brief as a Word file. You will complete the brief using your Soomo writing template and the topic you selected in the Project Three Milestone assignment. Use the data set provided and the relevant contingency table to complete your interpretation of the chi-square test. Note: You will find a contingency table that relates to each topic in the Excel file, provided as individual tabs. You must address the rubric criteria listed below:
Data Brief
1. Describe the key findings from your interpretation of the data for a general audience. Your response should be about 2 to 4 sentences. Include the following in your response: A. Easy to understand statistical values (e.g., percentages) 2. Summarize the background information for the scientific community. Your response should be about 3 to 5 sentences. Include the following in your response: A. Introduction to the research topic B. Credible background sources to support the introduction to the topic. Note: In the Project Three Milestone, you reviewed credible sources to create your annotated bibliography. Use those credible sources in this section or additional credible sources if needed. 3. Describe the major statistical findings for the scientific community. Your response should be about 3 to 7 sentences. Include the following in your response: A. An explanation of at least two major findings B. An explanation contextualizing the graphs you will include in the next item to ensure that the reader understands their purpose in the brief 4. Represent two major statistical findings for the scientific community with graphs. Your response should include a graph for each finding to support your description. 5. Provide a concise summary appropriate for a general audience. Include the following in your response: A. A restatement of why this research was completed and reminder of the key findings B. The application of the findings
