Adolescents is a time that brings about a tremendous amount of pressure. Teens can experience overwhelming stress in personal and familial relationships, school, and communities.
Coupled with the biological and physical changes that occur during adolescents and the need to fit in socially, teens who areunable to effectively cope with their stress can turn to more negative ways to cope.
One negative way in which some teenagers cope is through self-harm. “Self-harm is the deliberate infliction of damage to yourown body and includes cutting, burning, and other forms of injury” (Psychology today, 2018).
A teenager may view self-harm as a way of relieving stress, expression of anger, generating feeling, distraction, release of emotion, to influence others, to escape, or self-punishment (Moorey, 2010).
