Experiment 10: Phase Transfer Catalysis
Results and Discussion
The objective of this lab was to examine the effect that the use of a phase transfer catalysts will have on an SN2 reaction in dichloromethane solution.
A reaction vial was obtained containing the reactants 2-naphthol and allyl bromide. The phase transfer catalyst was benzyl tri-n-butylammonium chloride.
Together, 2-naphthol and allyl bromide in dichloromethane yielded allyl 2-naphthyl ether. The reaction was monitored using a TLC.
The samples were taken at various time intervals such as: 0 min, 10 min, 30 min, and 60 min.
The data is shown below in table 1.
Table 1:
TLC Results
Time (min) Rf Values
0 0.324
10 0.784
30 0.794
60 0.794
Each sample was taken at various time throughout the reaction which explains why the Rfvalues differed within the samples in the beginning.
