Experiment 7 Results and Discussion
In this experiment, preparative gas chromatography was used as a method to separate a mixture of components. The gas chromatograph works by using the different boiling points and volatility of the components to separate them.
The gaseous compounds move through a column and a vial is connected to the column for the purified substance to be collected.
The compounds each have different retention times, and therefore elute at different times. In this particular experiment, the temperature of the gas chromatograph was 130 degrees Celsius.
We worked withthe sample identified as B-4. The retention for the first peak, or the first component, was around 1.25 seconds while the retention time for the second component was 1.75 seconds.
