Dehydration of Cyclohexanol
The objective of this experiment was to dehydrate cyclohexanol via E1 elimination reaction to form cyclohexene.
The achievement of this objective was attempted with the use of an acid to catalyze the dehydration followed by simple distillation, washing techniques, classification tests, and IR spectroscopy to analyze the product.
The mass of the product was found to be 0.81400 g. With a theoretical yield of 2.0537 g of cyclohexene, the percent yield for this experiment was 39.637%.
Classification tests results were obtained and an IR spectrum for the product was analyzed (Tables 1 & 2). All data providesevidence that cyclohexanol was dehydrated and that cyclohexene was produced.
